March of Dimes Barbecue Thursday, April 8 at Home Office The SPJST Home Office will sponsor a Texas Barbecue Lunch on Thursday, April 8 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Serving is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plates will be $5 and the menu includes barbecue brisket, beans, new potatoes, coleslaw and all the trimmings, including iced and dessert. WalkAmerica Project

Also in an effort to help raise

money for the March of Dimes, the SPJST invites you to join in the charity's 29th Annual WalkAmerica project. TeamWalk is the single largest source of funding for the March of Dimes and its Campaign for Healthier Babies. Participating is easy. The five-mile walk takes place on Saturday, April 24 at Lion's Park in Temple.

Something Old; Something New Publication Committee Meets This Saturday When the Publication Committee meets at the SPJST Home Office on April 10, an important part of the discussion will focus on issues related to the Internet and the development on an online presence for SPJST members and the general public. It's an idea whose time has come. Not to replace the Vestnik - but to supplement it and to help to ensure that the SPJST remains attentive to the needs of its members and prospective members.

At the heart of this discussion, we'll also be taking a look at a totally new and innovative kind of publication. For now, let's call it the SPJST "on-line" magazine and archive. Getting this project off the ground will take considerable imagination, planning and commitment. But, I know, with the support of the Publication Committee and management, it can happen and it can be a real asset.

That's just one of the items we'll be addressing. If you're interested in discussing this project, the Vestnik, or any communication-related topic, please join us. The open-door meeting starts at 10 a.m. this Saturday and, following a break for lunch, should conclude around 4 p.m. r

We have assigned a Best's Rating of B++ (Very Good) and Financial Size Category of VI. This rating downgrade reflects the society's continued decline in policies in-force, as well as the decline in first year life premiums. The rating also reflects the continued good level of profitability, strong risk adjusted capital position, and good overall asset quality. At this rating level, the marketing concerns that we have had in the past are less of rating issue. We appreciated the time that you and your management team spent updating us on the society's operations during our January conference call, and hope that the plans you shared with us are successfully implemented. In order to monitor your progress, we would like quarterly updates comparing actual to planned results, with a brief discussion of variances when the statement is sent.

From the SYD State Youth Director reports on Youth Clubs Third Quarter Dear Members, SPJST youth club members enjoyed the holidays this quarter.

They also shared their talents with their community and their local lodges. Twelve of the youth clubs visited nursing homes and 15 youth clubs presented programs for their local lodges. Some activities that youth clubs were involved in this quarter included: • Lodge 97, Placedo and Lodge 196, Houston-West Youth Clubs observed parliamentary procedure at the adult lodge annual election of officers.

• Lodge 13, Dime Box Youth Club assisted the adult lodge with cleaning up the parking area after a spe-

cial event. The youth club also decorated houses for the elderly during the Christmas holidays.

• Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club saw the last movie at the historical Casa Linda Theater.

• Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club donated gifts to flood victims.

• Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club took some time out for fishing.

• Lodge 160, San Angelo Youth Club enjoyed an ice skating party.

• Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club delivered Christmas dinner to shut-in members.

Youth clubs adding new members were Lodge 25, Ennis; Lodge 47, Seaton; and Lodge 160, San Angelo.

Special recognition to .Lodge 160 who added four new members. Way to go!

Twenty-seven youth clubs submitted their third quarter reports covering December, January and February.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood schedules dinner to honor mothers on May 2 On Sunday, March 28th, our President, Brother Al Soukup, called the meeting to order with the youth club leading us in the Pledge of Allegaince. Roll call of officers was held with vice president and fraternal activities coordinator absent at meeting time.

It was reported that there were 41 members and 10 guests present at meeting time. However, before the day was out there were 76 plus signed in and more guests. Our guests for the day were Cindy Gerik, Tiria Church, Glenda Gerik, Evelyn Muehlstein, Noema Sterling, Leo Koerner, Irene Hegar, Jerry Merenda, Joey Charanza, Sarah Pratka, Frances Chase, Kevin and Bethany Berger and David and Carolyn Spanel. We welcomed all of our guests and do hope they enjoyed their day and will come again soon to visit.

Our Treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave her report and it was approved as given. Sister Peggy is also our Youth Leader and she reported taking cakes to the rest home on March 3 and again on April 7. The youth had a raffle for the day, since it was our Easter party also after our meeting.

She also mentioned the District Three Spring Meeting to be held at Lodge 154 in Fort Worth on April 25th, which will include election of officers. Sister Peggy also reported that the youth were starting to work on their scrapbook, and that the District Three Youth Achievement Day will be at our Lodge 6, Cottonwood, on June 27.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary and Trustee Board Chairman, gave his report. He gave the hall bookings for the month, but reported that no social would be held on Good Friday. Our next social would be on the 3rd Friday, April 16th.

He did not have much to report at this time, with the next Trustee's meeting at 7:30 p.m. on May 28th.

Easter Egg Hunt Our FAC, Sister Nelda Hlavaty, was at another function and was unable to join us in time for our meeting, so there was no report. We were all very glad that she and Brother B.J. were able to join us later for our Easter program, egg hunt and meal. Our youth club, under the direction of Youth Leader Peggy Dobecka, presented a short Easter program.

After the program, all the anxious children had their Easter egg hunt.

Guess what? The adults also got to have an Easter egg hunt! Everyone enjoyed themselves outdoors for a while before returning inside for a nice meal.

Community Donations Brother Bobbie Dobecka, Donations Committee, gave his report of our 1999 SPJST No. 6 Recommendations towards community services for a total of $1,000, which were all approved as given. Recipients will be West VFD, West Amublance Service, SPJST Scholarship Fund, West League Booster Club, West Sokol, West Boy Scouts, Elm Mott VFD, Penelope VFD, Leroy VFD, Chalk Bluff VFD, Abbott VFD, Ross VFD, Aquila VFD and Gholson VFD. Longtime Members Honored At our meeting and party, our 50year members were also honored.

Those present to receive their 50-year pins were Sisters Jerelene Lenart of Irving, Texas and Mary Ann Koerner of Mesquite, Texas. Our 50-year pin recipients unable to attend are Olga Marie Novotny, Dorothea M. Pavelka and Eldon Pavelka.

A new member recently transferred from Lodge 90, Brother John F. Muehlstein, was recognized totday.

We were very proud to have him and his lovely wife, Evelyn, join us. We look forward to seeing them both often at our socials, meetings and other funtions that we have come up.

Those present with April birthdays were Sister Jerelene Lenart and Brothers George Straten, Bobbie Dobecka' and Keith Hykel. A happy birthday is wished to these and all with a birthday this month.

Oops, I almost forgot. Our $5 door prize was won bySteve Neckar. Our progressive $9 door prize was won by Brother Kevin Dobecka.

Next Meeting May 2

Lodge 24, Cyclone member Mark Greger named Eagle Scout Mark Greger of Temple will be honored at a special Eagle Scout ceremony on Sunday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at the Rogers Civic Center in Rogers, Texas.

Mark joined scouting in September 1988 as a Tiger Cub Scout in Pack 152, and progressed in rank to earn his Arrow of Light award in February 1993.

In March 1993, Mark crossed over into Troop 152 to begin working his way toward Eagle.

One of the first things he completed was 1•4 the Baden Mark Greger Powell Program at summer camp. He has earned 42 Merit Badges and Badges for snorkeling, 50 miler, and mile swim. In 1996, Mark completed the BSA lifeguard program.

In July 1998, Mark attended Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico with his Troop.

Mark has held positions of Den Chief, Senior Patrol Leader, Asst.

SPL, Patrol Leader, and Asst. PL within the Troop. He was elected into the Order of the Arrow in 1995, and Brotherhood in 1996. As an O.A. member, he has participated in tap-out ceremonies, and crossovers, and Eagle Scout Ceremonies for Troop 152.

For his Eagle service project, Mark organized a group of friends and fellow scouts to build a compost bin for the Temple Recycling Center. It has been placed at the Temple Community Garden.

Mark is the son of Bernard and Ginger Greger, and the grandson of Andrew and Annie Greger of Westphalia, and the late Charlie and Lee Marek. He is a Junior at Rogers High School, where he is a member of the high school band and FFA. He was nominated into Whos Who in 1998. He is a lifetime member of SPJST and a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club. He has held may offices in the youth club, with the most current position of Vice President to begin in June. Mark has aspirations of becoming a helicopter pilot and has recently joined the Army National Guard.

6, Cottonwood expresses thanks to scholarship drive supporters Lodge

I want to thank everyone for supporting the Scholarship Drive that helps our young people. Especially, thanks to Stella Perez, the lady that won second place in our Straight Domino Tournament on March 6th.

She has donated her prize money of $40 to the Scholarship Fund. A big thank you, Stella!

Also, thanks to all who helped prepare the evening meal at the Easter meetings and egg hunt.

15, Buckholts next meeting set for April 12 Lodge

SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts held its monthly meeting on March 8, 1999 at 6 p.m. with President Gladys Allison presiding.

Two new members were welcomed into our lodge, Rosie Falschinsky and Jarrod Don Godwin.

Minutes, treasurer and all committee reports were approved.

Several business items were approved.

Everyone that attended the workshop and banquet at Academy really enjoyed the information and the fellowship.

A benefit was held, Sunday, March 7,1999 for the Jones family that lost a grandson and their mobile home that burned. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to this family.

18, Elgin member wins in Sesquicentennial fair Lodge

Dollie Hajda, Mayor of Granger, Lodge 18 Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator/Reporter won first place in the Williamson County Sesquicentennial "Olde Time County Fair" held in Georgetown on March 25th. The wooden doll named Meme that she entered won first place. Her old-fashioned bonnet won third in the miscellaneous needlework division.

She is now eligible to enter in district or state contests. Sister Hajda has also been a State Champion winner with her kolaches for a number of years.

Dear Members and Friends, Lodge 24, Cyclone will honor its Age 96 and 50-year members April 11.

29, Taylor reports on March meeting Lodge

SPJST Lodge 29 held its March meeting on March 14 at 4 p.m. at the lodge hall. Donna Pasemann called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Cathy Bail read the minutes of the last meeting and Loretta Tate gave the treasurer's report.

Edmond Tate gave the property committee report and reported on repairs that had been done around the hall.

The annual May Fete was discussed.

It will be held on May 2 at the lodge hall. A barbecue meal will be available. Granger Polka Boys will play for a free dance.

New members in the lodge were Ann Cooper of Taylor and Douglas Mikulencak of San Antonio. A work day is set for April 17 at 8 a.m. All members are asked to come out and help clean. The next meeting will be April 11 at 4 p.m. The meeting was adjourned.

32, Victoria enjoys successful Valentine dance Lodge

President Mike Ahlstrom called the meeting to order on March 10, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. at Victoria Electric Co-op with all officers present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence for our departed members was observed. The minutes were read and the treasury report was given and approved.

Our Valentine dance which was held February 28, 1999 was a success. It was nice to see a lot of people that attend our dance. Our next dance is scheduled for February 27, 2000 at which time Lodge 32 will also celebrate our 100th year anniversary. The actual day of the signing of the charter was April 6, 1900. Charter members were Anna Bubak, Jan Bubak, Frank Chervenka, Jan D. Dusek, Jan Hosek, Josef Hosek, Jan Janota, Tomas Janota, Jan H. Adolf and Valeria Motal and Theo Kocian attended the workshop in Academy on February 27, 1999 which was very informative, we also attended the banquet which we enjoyed the meal very much.

Adolf and Valeria Motal and Mike Ahlstrom attended the spring district meeting in Moravia, which we enjoyed very much visiting with other SPJST members. The ladies served a very good svacina.

Wednesday, April 7, 1999—VESTNIK/7 The city of Victoria will be celebrating the 175th year anniversary of its founding to be held on October 16, 1999 a the Community Center and our Lodge 32 is planning on having a booth providing homemade chicken noodle soup.

A memorial gift was sent to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in honor of Alton Wokaty.

After the meeting was adjourned, refreshments of delicious homemade chicken noodle soup was served by Franklin and Lois Elles.

66, Waco reports on March meeting Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President George Pauling on March 21 at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall, Elm Mott. All officers were present and there were 36 members present. The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and motto.

The members stood for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased members Sisters Perline Warren Bartley and Lillian Ann Parma. May they rest in peace.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the February 21 meeting and they were approved as read.

Sister Dana McAdams read a letter which was addressed to President Pauling from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar concerning an update on the ad valorem tax.

President Pauling thanked Brothers John Engelke, Eugene Gerlich, Louie Veselka, Milan Dujka and himself for repairing a door which was damaged due to a burglary and the alarm system.

President Pauling had Secretary of the Board of Directors Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the March 3 Board of Directors meeting.

Chairman of the Entertainment

Committee Sister Dorothy Gerlich gave her report. They met on March 3 with one member absent. Today we are having hot dogs with all the trimmings, cookies and kolaches. For our April 18 meeting, members are asked to bring casseroles. The Entertainment Committee will furnish the salad. Ice cream will be served for dessert.

Tournament, Banquet Updates Sister May Alice Langlotz gave the FAC report. Game night was held on March 8 with 14 members present.

The next game night will be April 12.

She reported that so far three tournaments have been completed. The horseshoe tournament will be held in Temple on April 17. She needs names of participants. She also reminded everyone that the District Three Spring Meeting will be held in Fort Worth on April 25. She showed the plaque that Lodge 66 received for a Platinum award that was presented at the Awards Banquet on February 27 along with a check for $2,000. She read a letter addressed to President Pauling from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar along with pictures taken at the banquet.

President Pauling said that there were seven lodges winning the Platinum award, three from District Three.

Chairman of the Cheer and Condolence Committee, Sister Emma Ceska reported she received a thank you note form Sister Betty Urbanovsky. She sent get well cards to Brother Otto and Sister Louise Matus, Sisters Betty Urbanovsky, Estelle Hykel and Gloria Locke. Sympathy cards were sent to Steve and Margie Nors, Ida Mae Sellers on the death of the husband, to Bernice Pankonien on the death of her sister, Christine Olga Grams, and to Rosemary Adair on the death of her sister, Lillian Ann Parma who was also a niece to Sister Libbie Parma. She thanked members who brought food to the Rosemary Adair home—Bonnie Pruitt, Dorothy Gerlich, Mary Lou Urbanek for the cakes, Mary Alice Langlotz for the congealed salad and Emma Ceska for the congealed salad. Donations were received from Darlene Engelke, LaneIle Brem, Gloria locke, Polly Gaidusek and Emma Ceska. Please let Sister Emma know if you know of anyone that is ill so she can send out cards.

Sales Representative Dinner There is to be dinner at Ennis at 1 p.m. for all sales representatives and spouses of District Three. As of this date, we have 10 new members signed up for 1999.

Chairman of the Grievance Committee Brother Engelke reported no grievances.

Cookbook Sales Continue Youth Leader, Sister Diana Engelke gave the youth report There were 17 youth and six adults present at today's meeting. Today the youth brought bingo gifts and Easter candy for the Moody Nursing Home. Sister Diana reported that she has a few more cookbooks available if anyone is interested in purchasing one. Early this year, some of the youth participated in the Tee-shirt Design Contest Drawing.

One of our teens, Amanda Wallace

won first place and we congratulate her. She did a great job. The birthday cake was brought by Douglas Galler,, the game by Sandra Trickett. First place youth prize winner was Amanda Neslony, second by Tanner Guidroz.

Sister Libbie Parma had no Trust Fund report to make.

Brother Eugene Gerlich gave the Bookkeepers' report. He also congratulated the Lodge 66 sales representatives for working so hard in order to earn the Platinum Award. A discussion was held about the long distance service. Sister Rosemary Spence made a motion that we cancel this service and it was seconded by Brother Louie Veselka. Motion passed unanimously.

President Pauling suggested we put notices in the Waco newspaper advertising our functions or any news of importance concerning our lodge.

Garage Sale Set For May 22 The garage sale will be held on May 22 in lieu of May 8. Special Projects Manager Michael Galler said that the garage sale will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Lodge members can bring garage sale items.

Brother Gaiter -asked members what they wished to start the garage sale booth rentals at. Brother Louie Veselka made a motion and it was seconded by Sister Dana McAdams to charge $25 for an indoor booth and $15 for an outside booth. Sister Libbie Parma will head up the Bake Sale booth. Sister Dorothy Gerlich said she and her husband Eugene will donate a quilt to raffle off. Sister Ruby Orsag said she would like to sell chances on the quilt at her Beauty Shop.

New Member List Lengthens Sister Darlene Engelke read names -of candidates for membership as of the last of February. Jerry Kucera wrote up Melissa A. Warren, William L. Warren, Jr. and Bailey R. Warren.

Gladys Yates wrote up Jerry Lynn Pruitt. Randall Dillard,Sr. wrote up Waynette Kelley. All new members were accepted. Welcome to Lodge 66.

Sister Darlene also read a resolution of sympathy on Lillian Ann Parma Brother John Engelke is still accepting donations for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Sister Darlene Engelke made a motion and it was seconded by Sister Bonnie Pruitt for the lodge to donate money to the drive. Members all agreed on this motion. President Pauling thanked Brother John Engelke for his work on the 100 Pennies Drive.

Adults, Youths Asked to Help President Pauling asked all members to be at the hall for the April 18 meeting at 1 p.m. in order to help move tables back to their original place after a wedding that is being held the night before. We need as much help as possible. The youth are also to be at the hall at 1 p.m.

Adult door prize winner was Debbie Galler. 50-50 winner was Henry Grossman.

This is at Sokol Hall as usual.

87, Temple donates briskets for March of Dimes/SPJST barbecue benefit Lodge

Our March 9 meeting began as usual with the Pledge of Allegiance and moment of silence, but was followed by presentations from Wendy Sledd from the March of Dimes and State Field Manager Gene McBride. Brother McBride told us about the new membership drive while Ms. Sledd illustrated his second announcement about SPJST'S efforts to become the top new fund raising team for the March of Dimes. We were all invited to participate- in Walk Day on April 24 and to participate in the other fund raising events planned by the SPJST to benefit the March of Dimes against birth defects. Ms. Sledd, a former World Czech Festival Queen, is a well-chosen spokesperson to link SPJST to the March of Dimes.

After our guests completed their presentations and answered our questions, the minutes were approved as read, as was the Treasurer's report.

Treasurer Daryl Entrop then presented the Gold Incentive Award plaque to President Norma Alford. He also volunteered to take over our search for a plumbing contractor to correct our piping problems.

Our audit committee reported that Treasurer Entrop's records were approved and he was commended for their order and ease of review.

Then, to increase our charitable activities Sister Bertha Capps suggested that monthly birthday celebrants ought to donate their age to the 100 Pennies Scholarship jar at each meeting.

Before we adjourned, we discussed the possibility of honoring former lodge officers and youth leaders at our 50th pin presentation ceremony in October. Brother John Troy agreed to research potential honorees in old Vestnik records and to report at the next meeting.

Officers' Reports President Broz reported officers and some of the sales representatives attended the workshop and banquet in Academy where we received the Platinum award plaque and a check.

President Broz asked the membership to give suggestions on the type of awards party they would like this year.

A membership drive is now in effect for anyone recommending 25 new members. Ad valorem tax petitions have been forwarded to Temple. All fraternals will meet in Austin in the near future to present them to representatives. President Broz also reported on the pastry problem which she is working with city offices to resolve.

This problem resulted from a complaint to the City Health Department which we will investigate.

Parliamentarian Mildred Holeman suggested the fraternals band together and petition the Mayor and City Council and let them know how unhappy we are with this situation.

First Vice President Marie Stayton reported that the Flag Bearers for April will be the Choral Group. She also suggested we phone our City Council as well as sign petitions on pastry complaint.

Secretary-Treasurer Melanie Spies read the Consolidated Income Statement for the month of February.

President Broz announced that Larry Pflughaupt has agreed to take the Fraternal Activities Positions and Dorothy Pflughaupt has agreed to be the Benevolence Reporter.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Larry Pflughaupt reported glasses and hearing aids are being collected Next AARP class is set for April 8-9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. The future AARP class schedule is May 13-14, July 15-16, August 12-13, September 23-24 and October 23-24, 1999. Larry stressed the importance of turning in your volunteer hours and information related to the function. Reporting is now very lengthy and timing is very important.

Youth Leader Marie Stayton reported that the board approved fund raisers to pay for their summer trip being planned. Anniversary Day, the youth raised $460. Easter party is set for Saturday March 27. Please bring your children and grandchildren.

Sergeant-at-Arms Johnny Broz reported the kitchen will alternate sausage and cold cuts at the monthly meetings. Johnny then read quoted taken from church bulletins.

Lodge 88, Houston posts '99 schedule for AARP defensive driving classes AARP Defensive Driving Classes are being sponsored and held at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston at 1435 Beall Street at West 15th Street. Anyone who is age 50 or above may attend.

Membership in AARP or the SPJST is not required. Completion of the course allows for a ten percent reduction in your auto insurance. The course does not count toward ticket dismissal.

Classes are scheduled at the Lodge on April 8-9, May 13-14, July 15-16, August 12-13, September 23-24, and October 23-24, 1999. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. on the first day, with classes running from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on those Thursdays and Fridays.

A course fee of $8.00 per person is assessed.

Reservations may be made by calling the Lodge office at (713) 869-5767 between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on March meeting President Clara Broz opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. and Bill Hughes, Tom Hane and Ed Lorenz presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Names of three deceased members was read. Roll call of officers was read with all being present.

Minutes were read and approved and correspondence was read.

Richard Jenke spoke to the membership about the John H. Reagan World War II Memorial to be constructed on Heights Boulevard. This memorial

Board of Trustees Guenter Merkle reported the board is addressing security problems and expect to resolve them soon. Guenter also presented the board's donation recommendations for the first quarter of 1999: $500 to the March of Dimes, $1,500 to John H. Reagan, WW II Plaza in Heights, $1,000 to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship and $680 to Lodge 88 Scholarship Fund. Melanie Spies and Johnny Broz seconded the board's rec-

ommendations. Discussion concerning these donations followed these recommendations. Vincent Hegwood motioned we vote on donations individually, seconded by Gene Barcak.

The board agreed and Melanie and Johnny agreed. March of Dimes—carried; WW II—carried; SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship fund—a motion

by King Hegwood to reduce the donation, seconded by Gene Barcak, motion failed. The original donation amount carried. The balance to the Lodge 88 scholarship carried.

Blue Room Carol Liebscher reported the blue room is open on Thursday night and everyone is welcome.

Social Night Chairman A.J. Stayton reported Willie Wehring is still helping. Many thanks to all the people who work on the committee. A.J. suggested future donations to include the Shriner Burn Center in Houston.

President Broz complimented A.J. on doing a fine job as chairman.

Birthday Club Sisters Kathy Trefell thanked everyone who purchased Fiesta tickets for the their on April 7, 1999.

Mens' Club A.J. Stayton stated that papers were being collected and Wednesday, March 17, 1999 is clean up day.

Scholarship Committee Josephine Pflughaupt reported that the lodge received Three applications and a second set of forms is being sent to each applicant.

Lodge 84, Dallas softball team reunion set for May 16 A reunion of SPJST Softball teams including all teams starting in years 1954 through 1988. This will be a special day for renewing old friendships, good times and tall tales.

Plans have been made to have this event on Sunday, May 16 at the SPJST Lodge 84 Hall located at 2625 Floyd Street, Dallas, Texas starting at 1 p.m. Food will be served at approximately 3:30 p.m. and more visiting afterwards.

A committee of Larry Brennan, Chairman, Ben Jarma, Albin Vrana, Paul Valenta, Lionel Schulz, Jerry Manak, Paul Bartos and Don Jarma have been meeting to organize this reunion. Plans are now in place. We have over a hundred players' names and addresses, however, we hope they see this letter or hear from some of the players and contact anyone on the committee. We assure you, we did really try. We urge you to bring you wives or friends, they are definitely included because they played a great part in the team's success throughout the years.

Wives, remember attending games with small children ,tournaments, frying chicken at 5 o'clock for picnics at games, preparing sandwiches, cookies, baking hams for Stephenville tournaments, working in the kitchen at our benefit dances and the gettogethers at Tony's and the other places after the games? It was a lot of fun for all. Bet you remember, too.

District Five Director Louis Hanus gave an update on the ad valorem tax situation.

District Five President Evelyn Mikeska reported the spring meeting a big success and special thanks to the kitchen for a very good lunch. Fall Fun Day schedule for September 19, 1999 at Lodge 196. Results of election of officers were same as last year.

Texas Fraternal Congress will be held in Houston this year and we hope to have local youth participating in the programs.

District Five District Youth Counselor Marie Stayton reported the committee books are now available.

DYC workshop will be March 12-13 at Camp LOne Star for all involved in the youth program. Lodge 191, Lufkin is interested in forming a youth club and Marie will be visiting to discuss formation plans. Plans for District YAD are getting underway. In response to question on funds, donations are made to the SPJST Scholarship memory of deceased members.

Resolution Committee Laura 3:30 p.m. As funds are needed to cover expenses, we are asking each couple for $10 per couple or $5 per person and to also bring a covered dish. The meat on the menu will be ham and sausage.

All players are urged to bring pictures to share with all. You will all be mailed a special invitation with details and we request you return your reply along with remuneration to inform us of how many plan to attend. This will enable us to plan accordingly.

Our team was organized in 1954.

The purpose was to get the younger people interested in the lodge and make new friends. This proved to be very successful as many, many lasting friendships were formulated and still exist. We planned family picnics, fishing trips, steak award dinners—these were promised by Willie Ondrusek and wife, Carlyn, for winning league trophies. We won more than 25. For the years we weren't successful, we had "crow" dinners by Annie and Otto Janousek. They were first held at White Rock Lake and in later years, in the backyard of Ida and Lionel Schulz. Also, Sid and Justine Pokladnik were great and generous sponsors. Remember, too, girls, the girl parties when Justine entertained all of you? We also recall our Supreme Lodge and all the team sponsors which made all this possible through 35 seasons.

I could write a book, but space prohibits this. In closing, we urge and hope to have a huge attendance.

Guide Helen Hegwood requested that the members consider approving the purchase of a microphone for the singers. A committee was formed to study the requirements and cost and report back next month. Committee members are Helen Hegwood, Gene Barcak and Richard Jenke.

There were 98 members present.

Helen let the members in singing "Happy Birthday" to 13 celebrants.

presents honorees with 50-year pins Dear Members, The last few meetings have been well attended so I hope that the April 11 will also be as good.

The dance on March 21 at our lodge for which Don Peachey played was very well attended. There were friends from several cities around the area that came to enjoy themselves. The afternoon was very nice so many came out for dancing. The lodge does thank everyone that comes to the hall and we do try to show a good time for each of you. You are always welcome and we want you to feel at home anytime we have dances or activities of some kind.

At the last meeting, we were happy to present the 50-year pins to the members that have belonged to the SPJST for that many years The following did receive their pins: Otto Kurtz, Dan Zurovetz, Martha Janca and Shirley Zich, our daughter. We were happy to have our other daughter Carol Z. Everett from Florida with us for a few weeks. She left March 28 to go back to her home.

The youth club had their Easter egg hunt March 21 so maybe they will write about it later.

We were sad to hear about a past member that passed away. Dorothy Spacek, wife of Anton Spacek had lung cancer and did have treatments.

She was the sister in-law of Evelyn Spacek. Dorothy was 70 years of age and was laid to rest at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Fort Worth. Stanley Taterevich has been in the hospital for an operation, but at this time he may be at home.

135, Ennis hosts TCHCC fund raiser on April 25 Dear Members, We are looking forward to the TCHCC (Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center) fund raiser to be held at the Sokol Activity Center, E. Hwy 34 Ennis, on Sunday, April 25th. Our lodge will be joining other organizations and individuals as sponsors to help pay for the band's expenses.

Music will be by the Melodian Band from the Czech Republic.

Many of you had the opportunity to enjoy the singing of Miroslav Chodl, the band's leader, during his visit to Texas last year. He is bringing his band to the USA and will be playing in many cities. The schedule of events for the 25th of April is: Roast Pork and Dumpling Dinner, Silent Auction, Musical Entertainment Sokol Gymnastic 1 p.m.

reports on March meeting At 2 p.m. on March. 14, 1999 President Keith Kieschnick called our meeting to order. We had 29 members present who all stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll call of officers and Board of Trustees by Secretary Alice Jochen indicated that all were present except Flag Bearer Chris Schleider. The minutes from the previous meeting were read and accepted.

Correspondence was read. All officers reports were given along with each committees' report.

District Five Spring Meeting was held at Lodge 88. Attendees from our lodge 142 were Dennis and Elizabeth Hermis, Frank and Dorothy Tumis, Sidon and Rosie Tumis. They reported having a great time.

Fish Fry May 1 Our fish fry is coming up. Don't forget May 1st at Lodge 142. Serving will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by music, prizes, prizes and more prizes.

Oldest member present prize went to Anita Charbula. The capsule prize of $10 went unclaimed due to the absence of Janet M. Gryder and Evelyn Kroulik. Next month's prize goes to $20.

hosts annual dinner April 11 in Cyclone St. Mary's Altar Society of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone hosts its annual April Dinner on Sunday, April 11, 1999. In Memoriam In Memory of Edwin Jurica Edwin Jurica, 88, passed away February 6, 1999. He had been a resident of Nueces County for most of his life. He was retired farmer. He was a longtime member of SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi and was a Charter member of Czech Heritage Society of South Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Agnes Jurica and two sisters, Adela Sijansky and Elsie Call.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Beth Jurica, of Corpus Christi, Texas; three daughters, Frances McDonald, of Corpus Christi, Texas, Dorothy (Richard) Kline, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Kathryn (Bill) Marek of Robstown, Texas; six grandchildren, Frances Faye Carroll of Cincinnati, Ohio, Edwin Charles McDonald of Pearland, Texas, Catherine Ellen Kline of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Donald William Marek of Kansas City, Missouri, Jennifer Sue Marek of Robstown, Texas and Dudley W. Marek of Alvin Texas; also five greatgrandchildren, Cassandra L. McDonald of Pearland, Texas, Olivia G. Carroll, Maria F. Carroll and Benjamin S. Carroll of Cincinnati, Ohio and Alyssa J. Marek of Alvin, Texas; two brothers Henry Jurica, of Corpus Christi, Texas and Albert Jurica, of Mathis, Texas; one sister, Lillie Hayek, of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Funeral services were held at Maxwell P. Dunne Chapel on February 9, 1999 and burial was in Memory Gardens of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Expression of Sympathy The officers and membership of Lodge 117, Robstown, express sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother,

HAROLD J. HABRNAL, who passed away. March 5, 1999 in the Alice Hospital. He was 79.

Mr. Habrnal was born September 21, 1919 in Westhoff, Texas to Albert and Annie Bohac Habrnal. He was a farmer, a United States Army Veteran of World War II. Mr. Habrnal was also a member of the Orange Grove V.F.W. and a member of the Corpus Christi Gem and Mineral Society.

Mr. Habrnal was preceded in death by his parents and by his first wife, Margaret Habrnal in 1977.

Survivors include his wife, Maria Cid De Habrnal of Orange Grove; his first cousin, Ethel Simecek of Yorktown; several second cousins.

Visitation was held Saturday from 3

p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Holmgreen Mortuary in Alice.

Graveside services were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, March 8, 1999 at the Orange Grove Cemetery.

of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge 28, East Bernard on behalf of our entire membership wish to express heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of our departed member,

AMELIA KUBRICHT. Funeral services for Amelia Kubricht, 86, of, Richmond, Texas (formerly of East Bernard) were held at 11 a.m Tuesday March 2, 1999 at Knesek and Sons Funeral Home in Wallis with Reverend Don Ruppert officiating. Interment was at the Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard, Texas. Serving as pallbearers were Dennis Keprta, Theodore R. Keprta, William J. Keprta, Joe Doyle, Leonard Preisler and L.V. Keprta.

Born Amelia Marie Keprta on February 28, 1912 in East Bernard, Texas to Charles Keprta and Ann Orsak Keprta, she was raised in East Bernard and attended East Bernard Schools.

On December 24, 1931 she married Mr. Frank Kubricht, M.D. in Wallis, Texas. Mrs. Kubricht worked as a homemaker all of her life along with teaching school in Muldoon, Texas and owning and operating a nursing home as well as working as a nurse.

She was a member of the SPJST Lodge 28, VFW Auxiliary in La Marque, the Garden Club in La Marque and was a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in La Marque. Amelia Marie Kubricht did Saturday, February 27, 1999 in Houston.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Anna Keprta, her husband, Frank Kubricht, M.D.; her brothers, Joe, Charlie, Frank and Jerome Keprta; her sisters, Bessie Mae Ayers, Annabell Squibb and Marie Preisler.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Cross Catholic church in East Bernard, Texas or a charity of your choice.

Funeral services were under the direction of Knesek and Sons Funeral Home in Wallis.

348 young people attended their SPJST youth club meeting during'these three months. Twenty-seven checks were issued for a total of $1,045.

Young people are encouraged to attend their youth club meetings regularly. For each member who attends a monthly meeting, the youth club receives $1. Members are also reminded that they must attend a majority of youth club meetings during the youth club year (June 1, 1998 to May 31, 1999) to be eligible for Youth Achievement Day and summer camp.

District Five Youth Club plans trip to George Bush Library, Museum Dear District Five Youth Club Members and Parents, District Five will be taking a field trip on Saturday, April 10, 1999. We will be traveling to The George Bush Library and Museum and also, the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History. The schedule is as follows: 8 a.m.

4, Halletsville Youth Club hears from Lavaca County sheriff Lodge

Dear Readers, On March 14, Lodge 4, Halletsville had their monthly meeting at the Youth Center. The youth club had the honor of listening to Lavaca County Sheriff Trammer talk about Crime Stoppers in the county. We learned interesting facts like he keeps a phone with him 24-7 which is reserved for Crime Stoppers only. He also spoke to us about his trip to New York and his time on the Jay Leno Show.

The youth club made bunnies out of wash cloths for their craft. The youth were also reminded that District Youth Counselor Marcy Dortotik would be at the next meeting in April. The youth club will also have an Easter egg hunt for the youth.

March meeting, the youth began work on a stained glass vase. They will continue to work on their vases through March 28.

Activities

After the January meeting, the youth spent an afternoon of fishing at Johnnie and Margaret Krajca's pond. As a fund raiser, in February the youth spent a busy afternoon in the lodge kitchen selling sandwiches, desserts, popcorn and drinks to the P.O.L.K. of A. members. We raised over $150. in only four hours! After the March meeting, the youth played football in the lodges yard. Some adults even joined in the fun!

In January, the youth's winter, snowflakes decorated the bar. In February, their Valentine flower pots were on display in the dining room for the P.O.L.K. of A. Club meeting. One of the club members liked our craft so much, he offered to buy one! After the

A door prize is given after every meeting. The door prize box is continuous, meaning at every meeting you attend, you can put your name in the door prize box. So, the more meetings you attend, the more chances you have to win!

Start your projects now! District Three YAD is soon approaching. It will be on Sunday, June 27 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Members can enter in up to four different categories.

Ideas Needed!

We would like to put a scrapbook together for YAD. We also need decoration ideas for the polka Festival float.

Anniversary Decorations

The lodge has asked the youth to make table decorations for the lodge anniversary party. This will be a big task, so, bring a friend to help!

Upcoming Events

There will be a District Three lockin on April 2 at Lodge 84, Dallas.

Then Saturday, May 1, is the Lodge 25's anniversary party. District Three Youth Achievement Day is set for Sunday, June 27 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

Other Plans

Lodge

Active youth club members who recommend new youth club members will receive 35 points for each new youth club member they recommend who joins the youth club and remains active through July 31, 1999.

At the meetings, the youth have discussed plans to go to Six Flags, Wet-NWild, have a hayride, go bowling, skating, attend a movie, have a pizza party, have another afternoon of fishing and wiener roast! We are planning unique craft ideas, more fund raisers and some charity work.

Contests

It was wonderful to see that five of our lodge youth entered the camp teeshirt design contest. There is currently a flag essay contest for youth ages 14 and older. A few of our youth are eligible for the king and queen contests as well; please consider entering. The Vestnik projects and contests always have a very good response from our lodge.

You can do these at home or at the monthly meetings with the other members.

April Holland just turned 18 will be graduating from high school in May and plans to attend college in the fall.

She has been an outstanding member of the Lodge 25 Youth Club. We wish her the best of luck in her endeavors.

After reading about Texaska Horecka, complete the sentences below.

Representatives Josef Petr, Englebert Pollach, and I.J. Gallia of the Texas C.S.P.S. (Cesko-Slovanska Podporujici Spolecnost) fraternal lodges were in the forefront of a C.S.P.S. reform movement in 1896.

They recommended that mortuary payments he set according to age and that all women be accepted as C.S.P.S. members unconditionally. Gallia issued a challenge in the 1896 C.S.P.S. convention that unless the requests of the Texas lodges are met that " ... they will make an effort to organize a new fraternal benefit society that will meet the needs of the times." (At that time, mortuary premiums were the same for every member and there were no classes of insurance.)

Their requests were met with stiff opposition. Appeals had been made for reform. They were either ignored or went unheeded. The "fever" in Texas, referred to as "Texas Fever" — texaska horecka — in a post-secession editorial in the C.S.P.S. newspaper, had risen to a high pitch. The stage was set.

It all started with a brief notice in the largest Czech newspaper in Texas at that time, Svoboda, which was read by almost all the Czech people in

Texas. The notice read:

"The Main Lodge of the C.S.P.S. of the State of Texas will hold a special meeting in La Grange on Monday, the 28th of December 1896. This meeting will consist of one representative from every C.S.P.S. lodge in Texas. The main topic of discussion will be whether these lodges are to secede from the national C.S.P.S. The members of the C.S.P.S. in the State of Texas are dissatisfied with the mortuary premium payments because they are too high.

During the last five years, they paid out a total of $40,800 and were paid benefits in the amount of $21,000, consequently, they paid out $19,800 more than they received benefits for" (From "A History of the SPJST — A Texas Chronicle 1897-1980," compiled by former SPJST Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Texas Czech life for nearly a century," said Glenn Hutka, recently retired President of RVOS and a founding board member of TCHCC. "The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center is a large ambitious project. It will take significant contributions, such as that of RVOS, to realize our shared dream of preserving Texas Czech heritage. On behalf of the center and the future generations that will enjoy it, we are most grateful for this gift from one of the most vital Texas Czech organizations," said Retta Slavik Chandler, President of the Board of Directors, TCHCC. Organized in 1901, the Farmers Mutual Protective Association of Texas (RVOS) was established for the mutual assistance of Texans against losses by fire, lightning and storm. It was founded by nine American citizens of Czech origin near Ocker in Bell County.

Established as a non-profit organization, RVOS began with a total insurance in force of $112,816 for the nine charter members. Today, it has grown to $5.17 billion insurance in force and 63,012 members. Operating only in Texas, RVOS provided insurance coverage for homes, outbuilding, farm equipment, personal contents and more.

Twenty-, Twenty-five- and Thirty-YearDecreasing Terms. Offer affordable coverage with reducing (decreasing) death benefit applicable for selected period of time.
