Rally Team - Radiates Optimism Where Credit Is Due ...

With access to years and years of back issues of the Vestnik, I regularly go down to the SPJST Library and pull a random volume off the shelf to read and thumb through. I do it for two reasons: To get a better understanding what the organizational climate was like a generation or two ago; and to learn from the efforts of those who came before us. Years from now, I want future generations to look back the Vestnik - at our time - and say, "Those folks really had their act together. Not only could they sell insurance; they sold a new generation on the idea of 'fraternalism' and how it could make a positive difference in their life."

Let history also record that since last November, three SPJST Home Office employees - State Field Manager Gene McBride, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz and State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny - have been the core of a focused effort to build membership and generate a new idealism about what it means to be a member of the SPJST. Their primary tools are their optimism and the knowledge that they possess in their respective areas. At local lodge rallies and, most recently, • at the State Officers Workshop on February 27, they are working to make a positive difference in the growth and development of our fraternal order. If you read this week's cover story about SPJST's efforts to combine forces with the March of Dimes, you'll see they are also the driving force behind this charitable effort.

The optimism exuded by Brother Gene and Sisters Barbara and Melanie is contagious. I enjoy working with them because they talk about ideas and what the SPJST can achieve when we establish clearly defined goals and objectives and work together. They're also very friendly and fun to be around.

Senator Appreciates Value of Fraternalism Last Friday, I had the opportunity to visit by telephone with State Senator Steve Ogden of College Station.

Senator Ogden represents 19 Central Texas counties which comprise Senate District 5 and is the author of the bill proposing a constitutional amendment to authorize the legislature to exempt from ad valorem taxation (property taxes) property of certain fraternal organizations organized for the mutual benefit of members and their beneficiaries. The bill is currently residing in the Finance Committee, awaiting review. A majority vote by the Finance Committee is required to forward the bill, in its present or amended form, to the Senate and House for their consideration. Pending approval by the House and Senate, a constitutional amendment would be submitted to the voters in the statewide November 2, 1999 election.

"In the next week or two, hearings will be conducted on the bill," Senator Ogden said. "This will be an excellent opportunity for fraternal supporters to show and offer testimony for the taxcutting legislation."

A fellow fratemalist, Senator Ogden is a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, a sister fraternal order.

Brother Steve expresses a keen understanding and appreciation for the good work that fraternal societies do in Texas and said that he was happy to sponsor the ad valorem tax legislation after being contacted by K of C State Deputy Ron Gay, also of College Station, who is helping to steer the intra-fraternal legislative effort.

Senator Ogden's past efforts have been recognized by the Texas Chamber of Commerce as an outstanding legislator and friend of business. The Free Market Committee has also awarded

him the Texas Ten Award for his conservative beliefs and voting record in the Texas Senate. He served three terms in the Texas House of Representatives before he was elected to the Senate in January of 1997.

Senator Ogden was born in Odessa and raised in Abilene. He is a 1973 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served a total of nine years active duty in the U.S. Navy's nuclear submarine force. In 1982, Senator Ogden left the Navy and moved to Bryan -College Station. He attended the Texas A&M College of Business graduate school and received his MBA in 1987. He is presently self-employed as President of Ogden Resources Corporation.

Senator Ogden and his wife, Beverly are the proud parents of three children.

SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION proposing a constitutional amendment to authorize the legislature to exempt from ad valorem taxation certain property of certain fraternal organizations which were chartered by the Congress of the Republic of Texas or were organized for the mutual benefit of its members and their beneficiaries.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: SECTION 1. Article VIII, Section 2, of the Texas Constitution is amended by adding Subsections (e) and (f) to read as follows: (e) The legislature by general law may exempt from ad valorem taxation the property of a fraternal organization which was chartered by the Congress of the Republic of Texas that has been in continuous existence since the date it was chartered if the property is used primarily for the charitable, benevolent, fraternal, or public service activities of the organization as defined by general law. The legislature may provide for the administration of an exemption authorized by this subsection and may provide additional qualifications and limitations for an exemption authorized by this subsection. (f) The legislature by general law may exempt from ad valorem taxation the property of a fraternal organization organized as a corporation, society, order or voluntary association intended for the mutual benefit of its members and their beneficiaries which has the mutual benefit of its members and their beneficiaries which has a lodge system and representative form of government if the property is used primarily for the charitable, benevolent, fraternal, or public service activities of the organization as defined by general law. The legislature may provide for the administration of an exemption authorized by this subsection and may provide additional qualifications and limitations for an exemption authorized by this subsection.

Ad Valorem Update Presented

The meeting was great and to the point. All of the reports were given.

President Howard Leshikar gave us a good report and said that we need to write more insurance. He gave out some flyers on the current membership drive and talked about the ad valorem tax issue, saying that there was a good chance that it would get approved.

Editor Brian Vanicek also gave a good report and recognized Sister Evelyn Mikeska for introducing the issue of seeking an exemption to ad valorem (property taxes) before members of the Texas Fraternal Congress (TPC) at their October 24, 1998 meeting. He noted that it was during the TFC's FIC section meeting that the matter was brought up and a vote taken by the fraternals in attendance to pursue the legislative relief.

The bill to make this a reality has been introduced by State Senator Steve

Ogden and is currently being considered by the legislative Finance Committee. Provided that it passes their approval and the approval of the Texas House and Senate, it will appear as a ballot item in the November general election. Let's work together and stay informed on this issue and see that it passes. It could provide property tax relief to all fraternal groups, with lodge buildings to maintain.

We gave away lots of cash door prizes and gifts. Afterwards we played bingo and everyone — young and old — had a great , time.

7(eaders Write District Five Youth Counselor thanks SPJST youth boosters Dear Members, The weekend of March 12 - 14th at La Grange, Texas was a very knowledgeable and rewarding experience for many youth leader.- from over the state. These leaders get no monetary rewards, no health benefits, no retirement for being youth leaders. They give freely of their time — sometimes out of their own pocket — to help our youth become the best they can be.

The dedication they give to the young people is often pretty hard on their own private lives and family but they do this because of their love for the youth. Members, this is really a very worthy program. This youth program really helps to lead our young people down the right path. SPJST is really the fiber and learning tool to teach our young leaders of tomorrow. We, us members, officers of the Supreme Lodge say this, well if you could attend just one of these workshops, a better understanding of this program would make you realize how important it is to really get behind these dedicated youth leaders. Help them, when asked too. Better still: just do it.

I personally would like to thank District Seven Director Brother Bob Bayer for coming. He has always been there to give is support and encouragement to us leaders. Thanks, too, to our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar who really works right along side with the youth leaders always ready with words of encouragement, a pat on the back when needed the most.

He has this instinct to know and understand what is needed to inspire us to our fullest potential. Without this, and the support of our families it would be hard.

I also would like to thank our Editor Brian Vanicek for coming and talking to us and giving his support. Brother Gene McBride, who was also there, always makes you feel better about more than just selling insurance. He encourages everyone.

Our District One and Two Sales Representative Keith Gatewood,

accompanied by his lovely fiancee, Adrianna, joined us. He is top notch, members. Our very own, Jim Weist of Districts Five and Six was also there.

This guy really knows how to get you enthused and really to accept any challenge before you. Keep it up, Jim. Finally, Larry Wagner of District Seven, was there to give us his encouragement. This means a lot to us, Larry.

Last but not least, joining us for the workshop was our State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz. When you have her in your corner, you know that she is working hard to give everyone answers and help in anyway she can. My thanks goes out to all of the new youth leaders for getting involved to help make a difference to our youth. And, thanks to my friend, Bessie Petr, who makes the best brownies in the state of Texas. Hey, members, it's worth a visit to the workshop just to get a taste of them.

Our State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny is doing an outstanding job in managing this program and introducing fresh, new ideas. Since the Youth Program was started in SPJST, we have had many fine SYDs, all with the same idea: To make this program the best and keep it growing. Thanks, too, to David who is a very special friend to Melanie and the program.

It was a great workshop and a very learning experience for all of us. May we all continue to set our differences aside and keep this youth program top notch in SPJST. Members when you see your youth leaders in the lodges that have youth clubs, please let them know you support them, give them a pat on the back. They would really like that. My hat (if I wore one) goes off to you youth leaders and all the District Youth Counselors and assistants who work so hard to make things better for our young people.

May you all have many blessing in the coming days ahead, because we really make up a very unique club.

Lodge 5, Pilot-Point Tioga member takes top prize in SPJST State Tarok Tournament Kubala of Pilot-Point/Tigoa, SPJST Lodge 5, must have known that Saturday, February 20th was his lucky day. Decked out in a red shirt and red SPJST cap, J.J. scores were as hot as his shirt was red. With a high score of 225 points in round five, (the highest of the day), and a low score of 76 in round two, JJ's average was 147.2 per round. His total score of 883 for six rounds brought him accolades as the winner of the last Tarok Tournament of the century.

Paul Schlesinger of Taylor, SPJST Lodge 29, rang up second place thirteen points behind brother Kubala with 870 points for six rounds.

Aleen Jaecks, of Elgin, SPJST Lodge 18, busted what she called her Hosing streaki with an average round score of 133 points. Her six round score of 798 points garnered her third place overall for the day.

Walter Muehr of South Houston, SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena, pulled in 797 points for six rounds. His average fell just behind Aleens at 132.83.

Congratulations to the top four players of the day.

In fifth through eight places, respectively were: Jimmie Coufal, 743 points, Margie Hajda, 719 points, Joe Vyvjala, 703 points and Jerry Brezina, 695 points.

High Round Winners

High round winners were: Walter Muehr, 189 points, round one; Paul Schlesinger, 210 points round two,

Linda Gaas, 179 points, round three, Alton Demel, 203 points round four, J.J. Kubala, 225 points, round five, and a tie in round six between J.J. Kubala and Paul Schlesinger at 167 points each.

SPJST Lodge 66, Waco, led by President, George Pauling, was a wonderful host for the day. George is one of the original Tarocky supporters. One of the first Taroky tournaments was held at Lodge 66, prior to the establishment of a state tournament. Thanks for the great lunch and friendly faces.

Al Soupkup, George Pauling, John Engelke and President Leshikar, practiced their Tarok skills during the day.

Course I had to look over their shoulderfs and put my two cents in. Finally, after several looks, I went away and left them alone. I can take a hint!

Director Klinkovsky and beautiful wife, Irma were in attendance. Frank filled in as a player when Franklin Schlesinger was called away. During round six, Frank's table sure kicked up a ruckus on deciding whom paid what to whom. It all ended in a fraternal and friendly rib-tickin laugh for all involved.

It was nice to visit with Director Kfizan and his mother, who stopped in for a time. The day was overcast and gray, but Lodge 66, was filled with laughter and fun. See you next time.

Lo etters Section Lodge 18, Elgin members record fraternal hours On March 16 at 6:30 p.m., members gathered for a dinner meal of chili dogs and delicious calorie-free desserts prepared by Johnny and Irene Vrabel, Cybaline Felfe, Irene Helgren and Gladys Mogonye.

President Andrew Greinert called the meeting at 7:30 p.m. He was joined by members in the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. Roll call was answered by officers and committees Band-booking Chairperson Artie Monson was absent.

Minutes were read by Secretary Agnes Eschberger. Corrections were made and approved. Treasurer Agnes Rupp passed out the monthly report of the income and expenses. Members were pleased with the report.

List Fraternal Hours Vice President Dollie Hajda reported on correspondence. She asked members to keep their hours each month when they work at the lodge, attend funerals, visit rest homes and shut-ins and help friends and members in need. Your lodge will receive credit for doing this on the lodge incentive program for year 1999.

April 18 - 24 is National Fraternal and Volunteer Week. Lodge 18 will honor all its members who have donated their time to the lodge activities and

Youth Leader Ruby Bowen is planning an Easter egg hunt and a May Fete to be held May 23. More information will be given in April meeting The youth sponsored the kitchen during the battle dance and all enjoyed it and are ready to work again. They were assisted by Ruby Bowen and Johnny and Irene Vrabel.

Thomas Ries gave a report on the bar expenses and income. Ticket Chairperson Gladys Mogonye had a good report.

Memorial Fund: A Lasting Gift There was a report on the memorial fund by Mildred David. This fund was started some years ago and is a great success. Check with Sister David to make a memorial for your kin or friends. This is a memorial that will live forever.

Marvin Marek is serving his first term as the Financial and Membership Chairperson. Since his appointment in January, he has worked on collecting annual dues with great success. He stated that it may be a twelve month job, but if you work on it, (which he did) the job can be done in three months.

Marvin is a great asset to the lodge.

Alex Roehlke gave a report of the Rules and Regulations. There are corrected copi.;s for anyone who needs one.

Evelyn Gustafson and Dollie Hajda gave a report on the cards mailed to members on the sick list.

Trustee Jack Eschberger read the trustee minutes which were approved.

President Greinert read correspondence from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar concerning property taxes on lodges. We need your support in a constitutional amendment to eliminate the property tax on lodge real estate and lodge halls by contacting your legislators.

Lodge members want to extend their love and sympathy to the brothers and sisters who lost their children: Emil and Evelyn Matula, Wilbert and Gladys Nelson and Bill and Sharon Holman. Our prayers are with all of you.

Get well wishes to Herbert Thaler who will undergo surgery March 23 in Temple and to Dan Wolf.

Dear Members, On the second Sunday, the 11th of April Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its regular monthly meeting at 2 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street.

The agenda will have the scheduled reports and any business needing immediate attention.

A fraternal hour buffet with a regular fare is scheduled after the business meeting. Report on the March monthly meeting.

The monthly meeting was held on Monday, February 15. President Johnnie Janak called the meeting to order.

The we discussed the upcoming "Good as Gold" workshop and Banquet. A discussion was held on upcoming activities for this year.

There was a motion made and approved that Lodge 38 would sponsor a Little League Baseball Team this year. FAC David Easley will handle the details for the lodge.

Lodge 84, Dallas reports on lodge, member activities Dear Members, A moment of silence was observed for our departed member Brother Frank Marek. Our sympathy is extended to the family. May Brother Marek rest in peace.

Secretary Salac then read the minutes of the two previous meetings as well as the correspondence from People to People Student Ambassador (Student Education Program) Stevie J. Howdeshell who attends Webb Middle School in Garland, Texas, asking for financial help to make a 16 day trip to Australia representing the United States from the north Texas area. A vote was taken and we are sending a check to help Stevie make the trip and after his return to the U.S., we hope Stevie visits one of our meetings and tells us of his visit to that huge country. I'm sure it will be thrilling and educational.

Reports of Committees The Living Memorial was reported on by Sister E. Salac. House Chairman—Adolph Salac thanked the following who helped make the floor a treat to dance on: Brothers Emil Petr, Randy Scott, Doug Sitz, Ben Gerlich and, of course, Brother Adolph. We thank all who donated work and time to care for the lodge, and to Adolph who spends many hours each week to book, repair and check on everything. We voted to give a gift of appreciation and thanks.

Hopefully, he and Evelyn can enjoy a few hours together away from the care of the lodge's roof, air conditioning, floor, plumbing, lights, carpenter work and goodness knows what else.

Youth Club Visits St. Joseph Nursing Home Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the group enjoyed their visit to the St. Joseph Nursing Home and many of the guests there enjoyed the flowers, program and loved the youth who brought them. She also reported they visited Brother Sid Pokladnik three weeks ago and enjoyed a picture taking session while there. Hello, Brother Sid, we miss you at our meetings and all of those wise words you always came up with about the SPJST at any given time and occasion.

Youth Leader Petr reported four leaders attended the workshop at La Grange.

The Czech Culture Society will meet April 26 at Lodge 84. Sister Carlyn Ondrusek reported that April 12 is the next Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council Meeting at the Czech Club with hosts KIT and KJZT. Fraternal Activities Coordinator reported she would welcome more activities on playing dominos, Tarok etc. A meeting is being planned for this.

We welcomed as a Sales Representative Sister Barbara Rejcek Hughes to our meetings as well as someone to have our members, introduce or send new prospects who want to become SPJST members.

89th Year Celebration Set Our 89th anniversary is April 18. It wig be a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings. There will be a guest speaker, memorial service for our departed members and 50-year members will also be honored. Members from near and far will be here to visit one another, so plan to be here. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and happy hour is from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Bessie's catering will serve the dinner and the cost is $6.50 for adults and $4 for children, 12 years and younger.

There will be a dance Saturday, April 17 with music by Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Come and enjoy the newly waxed dance floor.

88, Houston posts '99 schedule for AARP defensive driving classes Lodge

AARP Defensive Driving Classes are being sponsored and held at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston at 1435 Beall Street at West 15th Street. Anyone who is age 50 or above may attend.

Membership in AARP or the SPJST is not required. Completion of the course allows for a ten percent reduction in your auto insurance. The course does not count toward ticket dismissal.

Classes are scheduled at the Lodge on April 8-9, May 13-14, July 15-16, August 12-13, September 23-24, and October 23-24, 1999. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. on the first day, with classes running from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm on tho g e Thursdays and Fridays. A course fee of $8.00 per person is assessed.

Dear members and friends, We had a beautiful day for our workers' party on Sunday, March 21st.

The Knights of Dixie played for the dance and Staffs catered the dinner.

We had chicken fried steak, potatoes, corn, slaw and tea. Everything was delicious. It was really good to see Jerry Ermis and Jake Jacob at the party.

They have both been ill.

We learned that John Lacina's sister, Annie Janecka of Houston, passed away on March 1st and was buried on March 5th. She was 84. Also, Fay Deen Krejci, the sister-in-law of Viola Cox, Alice Braikovech and Tillie Helmcamp passed away on March 6.

She was the wife of the late Dr. Joe Krejci and lived in Borger, Texas. She was 88.

It's my understanding that Clara Jecmenek is still in the Park Plaza Hospital and is very ill. She needs your prayers.

Guess who turns 89 on April 1st? — Henry Kite. Bessie Dewer also had a birthday on March 21st. I don't think she would be too happy with me if I told you her age. Women don't usually like that, although I'm just happy to see another year and don't mind telling my age at all.

Who Is It? He is always working in the kitchen.

Everytime we have celebration at the lodge, a dinner or whatever, he is in the kitchen. His profession was a barber.

He has been a member of Lodge 88 for 13 years and a member of the Mens' CP_ b. The Mens' Club had a luncheon for their workers in March and who was working in the kitchen?

He comes from a family of 15 children (that's not a typo —that's really 15).

Can you imagine the rush in that house going to the bathroom? He was born in Halletsville, Texas and has been married for 49 years. He has three children, Edwin, Jr., Elizabeth Blahuta and Elaine O'Canas and three grandchildren. He served in the Army for just over three years. He has been a member of All Saints Church for 49 years. Who is it??? It's Edwin Gerlich and he is married to Agnes. Your hard work doesn't go unnoticed, Ed. If you don't already have your tickets to the Birthday Club Fiesta Luncheon, it's too late. We sold them all in a short time. The response has been wonderful. We should have a great time and I'm looking forward to it.

Look at the bright side: no matter how old you are, you're younger than you'll ever be again.

Honorees Given 50-year Pins At this meeting, 50-year pins were given out to the members that have been members for that many years.

The ones present were Otto Kurtz, Martha Janca, Dan Zurovetz, Shirley Zich. Not present were Frank Chaloupka and Sammie George so these pins were mailed to them.

The meeting was well organized and carried out in a business-like manner.

Several items were discussed and motions were made and voted on.

Monalee Hattendorf and Liz Howard really prepared a wonderful meal so our thanks to you two young ladies and also thanks to the ladies who brought pastries. The plaque that the sales representatives won by writing new members was on display and it sure looks nice.

It was good to have our daughter, Carol Zich Everett here from Cape Canaveral, Florida for a short visit. She does enjoy seeing all her friends and lodge members. However, she enjoys warm weather in Florida and it was cold here, but it will warm up soon.

Battle Dance Scheduled This may be early but do mark your calendar April 18, 1999 for a battle dance between two bands, the Alpine Village Band from Dallas and The Gary Lee Orchestra of Fort Worth.

They will be playing from 3 to 7 p.m..

They will also all be dressed in German Lederhosen so this will be a great fun evening April 18. The cost for this dance will be $7 per person.

The kitchen will be open and there will be free pretzels. The two bands are very popular and will put on good music for your dancing pleasure. If you do not dance, then just listen to the music and pat your feet.

Vestnik Mailing Delays

Headquarters is trying to get the Postal Service to get the Vestnik delivered to you on a Wednesday or Thursday so you can plan your evenings of entertainment. Quite a few of our members have called the Postal Service inquiring as to why the service has been so poor lately and therefore, they have not been receiving the Vestnik on time. Hopefully, this will be resolved soon.

Let's all keep our SPJST lodge a place we can really enjoy with or members and friends.

A bit of humor: One of my first jobs was with a company that installed swimming pools. My boss called me

into his office after a few days to tell me he appreciated my hard work "As a reward, I'm going to give you a new company vehicle," he said. At first, I was in shock, and then my excitement grew as he talked about the independent front-wheel suspension, air conditioning and the color - cherry red.

"This baby will really haul," he said.

The next morning my boss drove up and unloaded my new set of wheels - a bright red wheelbarrow.

Volna Cechie, 135, Ennis hosts TCHCC fund raiser on April 25 Lodge

Dear Members, Hopefully, everyone is enjoying a nice Spring. 1999 has already been a very busy year for us!

In January we made a donation to the Meals on Wheels in Ennis.

We'd like to report that Brother Tom Valek, our vice-president for many years, and a very diligent worker, has been ill. Sister Adell reports he is now doing much better. We look forward to seeing them at some of our coming activities.

Our lodge is donating a tree to be planted on the Sokol grounds this spring.

On March 8th we co-hosted, with WFLA Lodge 402 and KIT 35, a meeting of the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council. Thanks for the great food brought in. We also sponsored, together with WFLA 402, a table at the St. John's Las Vegas Night. This was a benefit for the school.

Easter tokens will be deluvered to our shut-in members and friends.

TCHCC Fund Raiser We are looking forward to the TCHCC (Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center) fund raiser to be held at the Sokol Activity Center, E. Hwy 34 Ennis, on Sunday, April 25th. Our lodge will be joining other organizations and individuals as sponsors to help pay for the band's expenses.

Music will be by the Melodian Band from the Czech Republic. Many of you had the opportunity to enjoy the singing of Miroslav Chodl, the band's leader, during his visit to Texas last year. He is bringing his band to the USA and will be playing in many cities. The schedule of events for the 25th of April is: 12 p.m.

College-Station invites members to tour Bush Library Dear Members, Lodge 189, Bryan - College Station would like to invite all SPJST members and their families to a tour of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. The tour will be Sunday, April 25th at 2:00 p.m. and will take about two and a half hours. Come early and see a replica of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall which will be there on its last day of a 10-day visit.

Cameras and camcorders are welcome, but flashes are not to be used.

Members of the group will get a discounted admission price of $2.50 per person, children 16 and under are free.

Since March is G.I. Joe month, we held a small ceremony for our active members who were in the military: Joe Babina was in the Marines, Bill Hilcher, Ernest Dueser and Joe Hurtik, Sr. were in the Army. They along with all members were presented a small flag made by Carmon Babina.

After adjournment for our social, we enjoyed a variety of casseroles with a salad, apple pie and red velvet cake.

A dog story: I watched an interesting story on the television recently. It was about a lady named Lauren Wilson and her specially trained dog, Delta.

Lauren, who is handicapped and hard of hearing,drives a scooter to get around. Her dog, Delta keeps track of the keys to the scooter. Perhaps, some of you have seen it, but maybe there are others who did not see it. I had to write fast to get the story, but I may have failed to get some parts of it.

Delta needed a place to stay and needed also to be trained as an assistant helper. Lauren did not like dogs until she was tricked to train Delta, who won her over and is now a special part of the family, as a trained assistant dog. Delta has his own mailbox, knows what one is thinking, opens the refrigerator, pushes the microwave button. Lauren also puts Delta into the clothes dryer so he can get the clothes out for her. Delta is a toy cocker spaniel, one foot tall and weighs six pounds. He does chase squirrels. I think I have read correctly that Delta had cancer of the nose and had to be replaced by a Collie named Keeno who was also, from the Assistant Dog Trainers. Little Delta was a very smart and sweet dog and I hope he is taken good care of. He deserves that.

Worth Friendship Club reports on March meeting Fort

was sent to Mrs. Prill. Martha Boenish thanked the club for the get well card she received during her recent illness.

It was nice to have you back with us, Martha as you were missed. Also it was nice to have Elsie Anders back, understand she has been busy babysitting.

White Elephant Sale Slated For April Various activities for the club were discussed and it was voted to have a white elephant sale in April. It was decided for everyone to gift wrap their item as hopefully, the more the beauti ful the wrap, the more cash it will bring. This was a lot of fun last year with bidding most lively. A top notch auctioneer will be on hand to handle the sale, so dig through your closets and drawers. As the saying goes, "my junk may be someone else's treasurers." The fun part is always not knowing what you are bidding on.

Non-Perishable Food Collection President Jo reminded everyone that April was previously designated the month in which we would collect food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry. So again, go through those coupons and bring non-perishable food items for the needy.

March Birthdays The singing of Happy Birthday went out to March celebrants of Harold Balvin, Carrie Milan, Marie Prill and Jo Prochaska. May all of you have many, many more. I was corrected by Rosemary Gribble for writing that she was 92 years young in February -- she actually is 93 years young. Sorry about that. Hope I have your "get up and go" at age 93.

President Jo reminded Irene Green, Pat McWilliams and Pauline Walker that they are scheduled to be hostesses for April.

Door prizes were brought by Linda Horner, Bessie Brezina and didn't get the third name and winners were Alice Barnes, Linda Lewis and Nettie Naugle.

Rose Nieswiadomy told of her experience recently of being at Carnival Grocery and underpaying her bill by $10. She later went back and spoke with the manager, showed her receipt and check and insisted on paying the balance due. Now, this is what I call

being an honest person. Guess we should start referring to her as Honest Rose. This was most honorable.

Members Wished Good Health We had several members on the sick list and all of you were missed. Jeanie Mason had pneumonia and. Katherine Garrison took her to the doctor.

Frances Matthews and Frank Kovar were also ill and missed. I've spoken with Jeanie and Frances since the meeting, both are well, so hope you are also much better, Frank. Hopefully, we'll see all of you at our next meeting.

It was nice to have Mary Pavey back with us at the meeting, but as I write this, she has not been well and will be returning back to Alabama.

Sorry your stay in Texas has been so short and we wish the very best for you.

Congratulations go out to Sister Linda and mother, Lucille as this is an outstanding honor.

Martha Boenish was so proud of her grandson, Bud Boenish, who caught a calf in the Houston Livestock Stock Show's Calf Scramble. Bud said,"Once I got a hold, I didn't let go." I've seen some of these events and it is quite an exciting honor to be able to route this active little calf across the white line. Bud will also be making a group FFA trip to Houston to a welding exhibit. Congratulations, Bud, your grandmother is real proud of you!

Roy, Lydia and son, R.L. Alholm will attend the wedding of their oldest grandson and nephew, Matthew, in Phoenix, Arizona. Matthew is the son of Tony and Kathy Alholm of Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Joseph's Church hosts annual dinner April 11 in Cyclone St.

St. Mary's Altar Society of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone hosts its annual April Dinner on Sunday, April 11, 1999. Sausage and home fried chicken will be served from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Homemade booth items, including canned and baked goods, will be available for sale. A prize drawing for a queen-size quilt that was sewn and quilted by society members is being held. Tickets are available from any member and will be available at the dinner. A silent auction will also be held.

Pageant August 6-8 in Wilber, Nebraska The 13th Annual Miss CzechSlovak USA Queen Pageant is scheduled for August 6, 7 and 8, 1999, during the National Czech Festival Days in Wilber, Nebraska.

Many people, many sponsors and many hours are devoted by volunteers to this non-profit pageant endeavor.

This ethnic pageant continues to grow because of the continuing pride, culture and heritage of Czechs, Moravians and Slovakians in the United States.
