A Taxing Concern

In October of 1998, attendees to the Texas Fraternal Congress in Austin voted to pursue legislative action, including an amendment to the Texas Constitution, that would grant fraternal lodges an exemption from property taxes. Already, there exists a precedent for this type of legislation. The Masonic fraternal order sought a blanket property tax exemption for its lodges in 1995.

At the polls, voters narrowly defeated the Constitutional amendment which would have granted the exemption.

The legislation which led to the proposed amendment was sponsored by District 28 Senator John Montford of Lubbock. According to Ben Lock, who served as Mr Montford's assistant in the Senate, the legislative effort was as good an idea then as it is today.

This directive - to seek ad valorem tax relief legislation was addressed in the January meeting of the Supreme Lodge in Temple. While no formal action plan was presented, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar indicated that he had talked with representatives of other fraternal benefit societies and there was support for the idea. He then suggested that the SPJST hire a legislative liaison or lobbyist to assist with the legislative process. District Three Director Krizan moved that SPJST spearhead the "ad valorem education project" with a budget not to exceed $45,000.

This budget is to be shared by the fraternals that are participating in this effort. District Four Director Stanley Broz seconded the motion which carried unanimously. As of press time, a lobbyist had not been hired.

It was also decided in the January Supreme Lodge meeting that the SPJST should proceed posthaste in seeking legislative action as to coincide with the November 1999 statewide election. The decision to try and get something on the November ballot presents a formidable challenge, considering the time element involved.

Legislators may introduce any type of bill or joint resolution during the first 60 days of the regular session. The

To ensure any likelihood of success in the legislative arena and fall balloting, it is imperative that a thoughtful and clearly defined plan of action for this project be established. Moreover, it is essential that we do our homework and learn as much as possible about the Texas Constitution and the rules of the House and Senate governing the movement of bills through the Legislature. Finally, we would do well to communicate this information to our members and explain the role that our local lodges, members and friends of the SPJST and our sister fraternals are expected to play in seeking an amendment to the Texas Constitution.

60th day of the 1999 regular session will be Friday, March 12. After the 60th day, a four-fifths vote of the members present is required to introduce bills or joint resolutions, other than certain emergency matters submitted by the governor. In a nutshell, time is of the essence and a lot of details need to be addressed - including finding the support of a legislator willing to introduce the bill.

In the Meantime ...

Our lodges have already paid their 1998 property taxes. Based on tallies collected by the office of the Secretary-Treasurer and tabulated by the office of the Legal Advisor, a total of 44 lodges maintain lodge properties.

Of the 40 lodges reporting, they paid a total of $148,574.33 in property taxes on properties valued at more than $6.5 million. Think about that! That's a lot of direct cash support that our lodges are channeling into their communities!

Money that is used for schools and other community development efforts.

Money that wouldn't be there if it weren't for SPJST! Want to get the most out of those tax dollars? Here's an idea: Before your lodge pays its '99 taxes, set up a personal visit with your county tax collector and arrange for a photo opportunity!

Prepare a press release and share it with the media. Let others know that your local SPJST lodge is an important member of' the community and is doing its part to contribute to the tax base. It might even warrant a bit of tasteful signage inside - or outside - your lodge home, acknowledging the tax commitment your lodge is making to support your community. What do you think?

Gene McBride honored at January Supreme Lodge meeting State Field Manager Gene McBride was recognized by the Supreme Lodge for having completed 20 years of faithful service. The presentation took place on January 13th during the regular Board Meeting. His wife, Frances McBride, was present during the special ceremony during which Gene was given a plaque and a gift as tokens of appreciation for his loyal service.

Gene was praised the Vice President Leonard Mikeska for the professionalism he brings to the entire marketing team. VP Mikeska stated that he values Gene's input and participation in decisions and strategies of the Insurance Department. Gene also received the plaudits of Chairman of the Board, Matt Vanek and President Howard Leshikar. Frances McBride was praised for her supporting role during Gene's 20 years of service.

Gene currently serves the Society as State Field Manager. This position gives him supervision responsibility of the Society's team of State Field Representatives and actively involves him in the management of the Society's sales representatives. One of Gene's key roles revolves around the strengths he brings to the Society's recruiting, training and motivation strategies.

Gene began his career with the SPJST on September 1, 1978. At that time, he was employed as a wholesale milk distributor for Oak Farms Dairies.

He served as President of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis for six years prior to his appointment by the Supreme Lodge.

He shared the field responsibilities with Silas Smith until his death.

Gene was the moving force in organizing the SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy, and has continued to be active in the leadership of that lodge.

He and Frances have been active in various leadership roles in their community.

Gene responded, "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the SPJST Insurance Department the last 20 years.

I have also enjoyed serving the members and working to meet their needs.

During these 20 years, I have seen many improvements in the overall operations of the SPJST. I am very happy that I could be a part of this growth. Working with the sales representatives and lodges across the state has been a wonderful experience. I look forward to serving SPJST for many years to come. I truly believe that the best is yet to come."

Lodge 1, Fayetteville votes to donate $500 to school playground The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge 1 at Fayetteville met on Monday, January 25, 1999 at the SPJST Hall in Fayetteville for their quarterly meeting at 7 p.m.

Upon approval of the minutes read from the October and December meetings and acceptance of the treasurer's report, members discussed projects for 1999.

In Support of the Youth Kim Kovar suggested that a donation be made toward the purchase of playground equipment for the Fayetteville School ground. Members voted to donate $500 towards the purchase of this equipment.

Other projects discussed, included having a "Summer Youth Camp" for the youth members of Lodge 1. Kim Kovar and Brenda Minarcik will do some research on conducting this type of endeavor, rental of cabins, volunteers, etc.

The scheduling of meetings was also discussed and members suggested, having a luncheon meeting to attract those who are unable to attend night meetings. So the next meeting scheduled for March will be a luncheon meeting with the date to be set upon confirmation with a restaurant on Tuesday or Thursday. The date, time, place, etc. will be announced.

4, Hallettsville meets February 14 at youth center Lodge

Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, January 10, 1999 at the Youth Center at 3 p.m. with President Joe Siptak 'presiding. The presentation of colors and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Youth Club Flag Bearers Elizabeth Vahalik and Christopher Vanek.

Recognized and welcomed as special guests were District Six Director and Chairman of the Board Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta, from Victoria.

Director Vanek then installed our officers for 1999.

Secretary Margaret Smotek read the minutes to the last meeting.

Correspondence followed.

FAC Lillie Balusek and Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave reports.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported on the monthly Bingo held for the residents of Steven's Convalescent Center. Members assisting were Evelyn Holy, Lillie Balusek, Vickie Zak and Elsie Mascheck. She also announced that January, February and March birthdays will be honored at the next meeting.

Youth Leader Shirley Kalmus reported on the youth activities. They are collecting aluminum cans and pull tabs. Members many help by bringing these items to the next meeting. She also presented certificates to Elizabeth Wagner and Adam Siptak for winning first place in their age divisions in the District Six Christmas ornament contest.

Old Business Elsie Mascheck agreed to continue as Sunshine Chairman.

President Siptak and Sales Representative Mary Matula presented a Centennial Club Pin to Margaret Smotek for recommending two individuals who then joined our lodge.

Director Vanek then spoke to the members and gave an interesting and informative message.

Margaret Smotek and Helen Zabransky will check with Hallettsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Enter, our adopted rest home, to get a date we can help them on a monthly basis.

Reporter Patsy Zabransky was asked to start putting our monthly meeting report in the Hallettsville Tribune Herald newspaper.

The meeting adjourned followed by a delicious lunch with President Siptak giving the meal blessing.

Door prize winners were Margaret Smotek, Jonathan Vahalik, Evelyn Holy, Annie Vahalik, Vickie Zak and Helen Zabransky. Many thanks to Director Vanek for donating several nice door prizes.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 14th at the Youth Center at 2 p.m. followed by Bingo. Lunch will be served as usual and door prizes given.

President Gladys Allison convened the meeting at 6 p.m. All officers were

Our stew dinner has been postponed due to community activities.

18, Elgin honors birthdays, anniversary celebrants Lodge

Sunday, January 24, Lodge 18 had a group of members who had birthdays and anniversaries. Members enjoyed the afternoon dancing to the wonderful music of Bobby Jones and his band.

There were nine birthdays. All but one claim they were 39 and holding.

Honor guest was Oscar Helgreen who was 80 and proud. Congratulations, Oscar!

Celebrating anniversaries were Johnny and Irene Vrabel, married 40 years and John and Delfhine Stole, wedded for 50 years.

18, Elgin ballroom dance set for February 13 Lodge

January 19th at 7:30 p.m. the members of Lodge 18 held their first meeting with the new officers.

President Andrew Greinert opened the meeting and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and a silent prayer for all departed members.

Roll call was answered by all officers and committees. Absent was band booking chairperson, Artie Monson.

To show their appreciation to the outgoing officers and committees, President Greinert presented each member with a "Certificate of Appreciation" signed by President Greinert and Vice President Dollie Hajda, which were furnished by the Supreme Lodge. Members who were honored were Jim. V. Mogonye, Evelyn Gustafson, Alice Kovar, Helen Ray Gustafson, Marie Wiesner and Arthur Wiesner.

Under correspondence, Vice President Hajda read a letter dated November 10, 1998 from the Supreme Lodge which was not submitted to the members in the November and December meetings, concerning the members and to ask for help with a petition to his or her elected representative in Austin with the property taxes

Secretary Agnes Eschberger read a thank you note from District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky. Members appreciate the time Brother Frank took and wish him a speedy recovery.

Treasurer Agnes Rupp reported on the correspondence from Elgin Basketball Association concerning a donation. It was approved by the members.

Treasurer Agnes Rupp passed out the financial report from December 1, 1999 through January 19, 1999.

Youth Leader Ruby Bowen gave a report on the youth of the lodge. Little members made felt Christmas trees for the residents of the nursing home.

They will be making Valentines for them in their next project. Thank you, Ruby for the love you show to our loved ones.

Mildred David, in charge of the Memorial Fund, gave her report. This fund was set up years back and is a great success. If you need to make a memorial donation for a friend, sister, brother or loved one, please contact Sister David.

Bar Chairperson Thomas (Sac) Ries gave a complete report on the expense and income of the lodge bar which serves drinks, chips, candy and popcorn. Other reports we heard from Gladys Mogonye on ticket sales, Irene Helgreen, House Committee on rentals, Alex Roehlke, Rules and Regulations of Lodge 18. Secretary of the Trustees, Jack Eschberger read December minutes of the trustee meeting. All reports were approved.

Wednesday, February 10, 1999—VkSTN1K/7 announced that the youth club received first place in the Lack's Trim-A-Tree for Charity contest in December. The youth club received $200. Youth Leader Baker thanked everyone for donating canned food and helping the youth club win the contest. Way to go, youth club! We are proud of all of you. The District Two Skating Party is also on the 21st at Skate Haven in Temple beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday, February 13 at Flag Hall in Cyclone, Texas. Flag Hall is located 12 miles east of Temple, just past Zabcikville in East Bell County. All ages are cordially invited to join in the fun. Doors open at 6 p.m. and admission is free.

It will be a night to remember. The crowning of the 1999 Mardi Gras King takes place at 7 p.m. By popular request, Elvis Live! takes center stage at 8 p.m. for a command Mardi Gras performance. You can be a star too!

Following Elvis, the Mardi Gras karaoke stage provides would-be and wouldn't-be singers with their big chance to perform.

And that's not all. Throughout the evening, there will be carnival-style games, face painting, cajun jambalaya and beverages available. The arcade area will also be open. A prize drawing takes place at 10 p.m. Proceeds will go towards the the maintenance and improvements at Flag Hall.

The prize is awarded to lodges that achieve a healthy mix of community service activities and membership goals. Mardi Gras '99 is an expression of thanks to lodge members and friends for their kind support in helping to make Flag Hall an active and familyoriented community center.

"We'd love to see Mardi Gras become a regular community-wide celebration," says Lodge 24, Cyclone President Richard Greger. "It's a great opportunity to bring all parts of the community together and have fun!"

What's Mardi Gras?

Known as the "biggest free party in the world,"Mardi Gras is a traditional holiday celebrated in New Orleans, Louisiana. Locals celebrate Mardi Gras by going to parades where they catch beads, doubloons, cups and trinkets that are all thrown from floats.

They have masquerade balls and dress 4

up in costumes for these events. King Cakes are eaten during this holiday.

Mardi Gras came to New Orleans through its French heritage in 1699.

Early explorers celebrated this French Holiday on the banks of the Mississippi River. Throughout the years, Orleanians have added to the celebration by establishing krewes (organizations) which host parades and balls. Carnival quickly became an exciting holiday for both children and adults. Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday" and, of course, is celebrated on that day of the week. The date can fall between February 3 and March 9 depending on the Catholic Church.

Mardi Gras is always 47 days before Easter Sunday. This year, Mardi Gras falls on February 16. The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold. These colors were chosen in 1872 by the King of Carnival, Rex. Purple represents justice, green stands for faith, and gold stands for power.

The Mardi Gras season begins approximately two weeks before Fat Tuesday. During those two weeks, parades can be viewed nightly and on weekends. Almost all businesses are closed for Lundi Gras (Fat Monday) and for Mardi Gras itself. People all over the world come to New Orleans to enjoy this extravagant holiday.

Parades are put on by carnival krewes.

Every year, each krewe picks a king and a queen who reign for that parade.

The floats are decorated to depict different themes. The floats are pulled by tractors. Most parades have at least 15 floats. People who belong to the krewe ride on the floats. They throw beads, doubloons, cups, and trinkets to the crowd. Following the parade, the krewe usually has a ball presenting their king and queen, and their royal court. The royal court includes maids, dukes, pages, captains, and jesters.

Parade-goers are surely to go home with some of the famous catches. You can easily obtain beads, doubloons, cups, and trinkets by shouting the famous phrase, "Throw me something, mister!" Beads are plastic necklaces that come in all different colors, shapes and sizes. They resemble jewels that royalty would wear. Doubloons are metal coins that are about the size of a silver dollar. They come in different colors and are stamped with the krewes emblem and their theme for the year.

Similar to doubloons, cups bear the krewes emblem and theme for the year.

They are plastic drinking cups and hold about eight to 10 ounces. Trinkets are known as everything else thrown from a float. This can include candy, stuffed animals, Frisbees, spears, roses, balls, whistles, etc. King Cakes are a big part of Mardi Gras. They are like cinnamon rolls but twisted into a large oval. The tops are covered with white icing and then sprinkled with sugar dyed purple, green, and gold (yellow).

Hidden inside the king cake is a plastic baby about the size of an almond.

Tradition has it that the person who finds the baby in the king cake is the next queen or king and must host the next king cake party.

The canned goods that were brought

by Lodge 25 and RVOS 51 members to the Christmas party were given to David and Sheila Motley and their children. They suffered the loss of their home by fire during Christmas.

President Linda Trojacek gave a report on the Polka Festival. The theme for this year is "Polka Into Y2K".

54, West fried/baked chicken and sausage dinner Feb. 21 Lodge

Another fund raiser will be held at Lone Star Hall on Sunday, February 21 with all proceeds going toward hall renovation. A delicious fried and baked chicken and sausage dinner will be held with serving beginning at 11 a.m. Help from all lodge members and Sokol members that are willing will be greatly appreciated.

Willing helpers are asked to report to Lone Star Hall at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 20 to make preparations. Members are requested to bring pastries for the dinner.

Cost of the meal will be $5 for large and to-go plates, $4 for small plates and $1.50 for tots' plates. This includes tea or coffee and dessert.

66, Waco readies for Feb. 20 state tarok tourney Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President George Pauling at 2:40 p.m. at Lodge 66, Linden Hall in Elm Mott, Texas on January 17. The youth presented the flag and led the motto and Pledge of Allegiance. There were 34 members and one visitor, District Three Director Brother Johnnie Krizan present. Brother Krizan, please come back again. We are always pleased to see you.

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased members Sister Frances Mace and Brother Frank Parma. May they rest in peace.

Brother Frank Parma was a charter member of Lodge 66. He devoted many, many hours of his time at Linden Hall doing all sorts of carpentry work as well as many other kinds of jobs. He will truly be missed.

Secretary Sister Dana McAdams read the minutes of the November 15, 1998 meeting, and they were approved as read.

President George Pauling gave a special thanks to the Entertainment Committee for preparing a great Christmas dinner.

Correspondence Sister Dana McAdams read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar concerning members being able to order flowers at a 10 percent discount. Also a letter concerning signing a petition on the ad valorem tax proposal to lower taxes on the hall. She also read correspondence from State FAC Barbara Rosenkranz concerning the state tournaments and the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive with fliers attached for whoever would like to contribute. She also read a letter letting Lodge 66 know that they will be hosting the State Taroky Tournament on February 20. She also read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge stating that the Incentive Reports had to be mailed in this month. Also, we

have a 50-year member who is due a 50-year pin, and it will be mailed directly to him. He is Michael Tmajstrala. Congratulations, Michael.

Sister McAdams also read a letter from Supreme Lodge Secretary Sister Lanita Anglin asking for updates on records, such as name, address and other information on members.

Chairman of the Board, Brother Johnnie Gaidusek, had secretary Sister Bonnie Pruitt to read the minutes of the previous Board of Directors meetings.

Entertainment Report Chairman of the Entertainment Committee, Sister Dorothy Gerlich, gave her report. She reported that the committee met on January 6. She thanked everyone who worked so hard on the Christmas Party and for all the donated food and music. She read notes from Sidney Kacir, Justine Pokladnik and Johnnie Krizan not being able to attend our Christmas Party due to other commitments or sickness. The committee discussed the menu for the State Tarok Tournament on February 20. The menu consists of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, salad and desserts. We will also have kolaches, juice and coffee available.

She is asking for volunteers to bring desserts for the tournament. Sister Gerlich also stated that the committee spent a lot of time computing data for the Fraternal Report of the last six months of 1998. They submitted the report as a group in lieu of individually.

For the February 21 meeting, members are asked to bring sandwiches.

Today, we are having a pot luck meal.

We are also having turkey and dressing left over from the Christmas party and sausage, potato salad and tole slaw left over from the Parma funeral.

President George Pauling thanked all participants in the Arts and Crafts Show and Sale. There was a good turn out.

Tournament Details Sister Mary Alice Langlotz gave the FAC report. She reported that tonight would be game night. Maybe next month the game night will go back to the Monday nights. She reported on the State Taroky Tournament on February 20. Registration is at 8 a.m. and play begins at 9 a.m. Admission is $7 per person and is limited to SPJST members only. Included is the noon meal, snacks and prizes. If anyone is interested in learning how to play Taroky, there will be new recruits to teach you. Sister Mary also reminded members about attending the State Workshop and Incentive Awards Banquet at Academy on February 27.

She will also be sending registration forms to the State 42 Tournament at Buckholts on March 20 and the Straight Domino Tournament on March 6 at Cottonwood Lodge 6. She thanked the youth club and Entertainment Committee for getting the year-end fraternal reports to her.

FAC Langlotz mentioned, too, the dates for the State Volleyball Tournament as the second weekend in October and the State Horseshoe Tournament on Saturday, April 17 in Temple.

Sister Emma thanked all who donated money for food and money for the Libbie Parma Trust Fund for the Frank Parma family.

It was announced that Lodge 66, Linden Hall, will receive a Platinum Award for the year 1998.

Chairman of the Grievance Committee, Brother Bennie Engelke reported there were no grievances.

Youth Donate to Charities Youth Leader, Sister Diana Engelke, gave the youth club report. They had 12 youth and six adults present today.

The youth made several donations to several charities. They worked the kitchen on New Year's Eve. They all attended the State Lock-in this weekend. The game was brought by Dakota Yates and won by Jodie McAdams.

On January 24 at 2 p.m., the youth will make Valentine boxes for the Moody Nursing Home. The youth club made Christmas donations of $10 to the Trust Fund and also a $25 donation to the Libbie Trust Fund in memory of Brother Frank Parma. First place youth door prize winner was Dakota Yates and second by Amanda Wallace.

Chairman of the Auditing Committee, Brother Johnnie Gaidusek reported that the committee met today and all books are in good order.

Bookkeeper Brother Eugene Gerlich gave a good bookkeeper's report.

100 Pennies Committee John Engelke District Three Director Brother Johnnie Krizan spoke on various subjects. He thanked the youth for attending the State Lock-in at the Y this weekend. He also reported that District Three was tops in state sales and state applications for 1998. Thank you, Brother Johnnie for attending our meeting and for all your input.

The Entertainment Committee had a vacancy and it was voted on to select Gloria Locke to fill that position.

Brother John engelke thanked President George Pauling for fixing the leak on the parking lot once again.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt thanked the youth club and their parents for coming by to her residence to sing Christmas carols. There are some great voices in that group.

Door prize winner was Brother Otis Ceska. The 50-50 was won by our guest, Brother Johnnie Krizan.

January birthday celebrants were Libbie Parma and Justin Engelke.

Justin had to leave early.

The next Entertainment Committee and Board of Directors meeting has been rescheduled for February 10 at 7 p.m. The monthly lodge meeting is scheduled for February 21 at 2:30 p.m.

79, Corpus Christi welcomes visitors at January meeting Lodge

The first meeting in 1999 was held on Sunday, January 17 and was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Jerry Sijansky with all officers present. The officers for 1999 were sworn in by District Seven Director Bob Bayer.

Then everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance. We have a few members on the sick list; hope they are soon much improved.

The minutes for November and December meetings were read by Secretary Helen Pavelka and both were approved.

Our guests at the meeting were District Seven Director Bob Bayer, State Field Representative Larry Wagner, his wife, Kathy and their children Morgan and Rebekah. Welcome to all and come again!

The letter pertaining to the 50 year membership pins was read and members voted that Supreme Lodge send the pins to Lodge 79, since we plan to have an awards dinner later in the spring when the pins are to be awarded.

The financial report was given by Treasurer Milly Elzner, and she also gave the annual report. We are in good financial shape. She read letters of thanks from the family of Adela Sijansky, Women's Shelter (for our December donation) and Sokol, Corpus Christi.

FAC Report Fraternal Activities Coordinat9r Jerry Elzner thanked Brother Bob Bayer and Brother Larry Wagner and their families for coming to the meeting. He has collected quite a few old glasses and is still collecting them. He said it was disappointing last year when no student applied for the scholarship; hope it is better this year.

Brother Elzner stated that for this year's Everyday _Heroes Award, the lodge will get a scroll. To count as a fraternal act, there must be three or more members participating. Also, he said hopefully the lodge will have a fund raiser later this year for specified projects. The new project is to stimulate interest in SPJST to further fraternal activities by involving local officials. He was disappointed the past year that the lodge gained only eight members, which earned the first step award. The retiring Secretary, Jill Sijansky was given a gift certificate.

President Jerry Sijansky said that he had a letter from Supreme Lodge with information about the ad valorem tax, it pertains mostly to the lodges that have halls. We need to support this by voting in the November election if it is on the ballot.

Brother Bob Bayer spoke about some things coming up that were discussed at the Supreme Lodge Board meeting, such as the internal audit showed it was a good year, the books are in order, and the introduction of a new insurance program. He has been trying to contact Lodge 133, San Antonio about when the District Seven Spring Meeting will be held because they are the host lodge. He said that the convention is coming in the year 2000 and the State Officers' Workshop and Incentive Awards banquet will be at Lodge 177, Academy on Saturday, February 27. He said he likes to visit our lodge. Brother Bayer, you are always welcome; come anytime.

State Field Representative Larry Wagner congratulated Lodge 79 for winning the first step award. He challenged all the sales representatives to each sell at least 10 new policies this year. Challenge accepted! Now let's get busy selling SPJST insurance.

President Jerry Sijansky appointed Helen Pavelka and Jill Sijansky to the Resolution Committee.

The $50 monthly donation goes to the Salvation Army which can use more money all year for their work.

They help many, many people.

81, Needville members enjoy meal, make donation Lodge

On Sunday, January 17, 1999, Lodge 81 Needville met for their monthly meeting. Forty people attended, including several guests. Visitors who signed the guest list were: David and Donna Pesak, Rosemary Pieper, Leah Jo Stamman and Orin Stamman.

We were happy to have all of you join us. An invitation is always extended for your return.

A note of thanks to everyone who brought attendance prizes. The $5 door prizes were won by Benita Walzel, Leah Jo Stamman, Johnny Kujawa and Joyce Pesak.

After a prayer of thanks by Vice President Vincent Newman, a delicious meal of roast with a variety of side dishes and desserts were served. I think Benita always outdoes herself when it comes to baking the roast. She truly has that roast recipe mastered.

Thanks Benita! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone else who brought the side dishes and desserts. The food is always plentiful, and we have a lot to be thankful for.

At 1 p.m., Vice President Vincent Newman called the meeting to order.

Willie Mae Kuykendall led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for our departed member, Ottile Jurchak.

All officers were present with the exception of President Adolph Macha.

President Macha is steadily recovering from his recent stroke. We still extend our get well wishes to you.

Reports were read by Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall, Treasurer Benita Walzel. and Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel. There were no corrections to the reports, so they were accepted as read.

Old Business We had a discussion of the problem of loitering on our lodges's parking lot.

Jeanette Newman reported that, after talking to some officials, she was told that putting up No Trespassing and No Loitering signs would give police the authority to remove unauthorized persons off the premises. Gilbert Walzel reported on the cost of gates at the entrances to the lodge parking lot.

After a brief discussion, members decided to try the signs first to see if this solves our problem.

New Business, Special Election The lodge members discussed whether or not to donate money to the Needville High School ProGrad. After a short discussion, it was decided that

We had three new transfers coming into our lodge. They are Cecil, Keith and Gregory Tielke. We also have new member joining us. Her name is Taylor West. We would like to welcome all of you.

After all business was finished, it was time to hold our special election.

84, Dallas lodge plans anniversary, celebration dinner Lodge

Dear Members, February 21 is initiation Sunday at Lodge 84. Our meeting starts at 3 p.m.-4:30 with a dinner of spaghetti and meat sauce, salad, garlic bread, coffee, tea, dessert. Ladies, bring desserts please. Members are all invited and its free.

Our lodges's 89th anniversary date is April 18. Our dinner will be catered

by Bessie's catering, and our members are asked to bring a dessert to be served with the dinner consisting of roast beef, green beans, salad, potatoes, bread, coffee or tea. Adult plates are $6.50 and $4 for children 12 years and under. A happy hour will be enjoyed from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and dinner will be served from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The program starts at 2 p.m. The guest speaker will be District Three Director Johnnie Krizan. Our 50 year members will be honored, as well as the Fraternalist of the Year Brother Sid Pokladnik. There will be a memorial service for the departed members.

Lodge 84, Dallas invites members and friends to dance • . benefit ngTexas A&M University Czech Club We are looking forward for you and your friends to come to the dance on February 20th at Lodge 84 Dallas. The music will be furnished by the Jody Mikula Orchestra from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

We hope you come hungry because the kitchen will be open serving those special Lodge 84 homemade burgers. A special drawing will be held benefiting "Club C", which is a Czech Club at Texas A&M University. Our own member and Miss SPJST, Meribeth Novak, happens to be president of the club. So I'm looking forward for you to come out and dance with us and share that old time Czech TRADITION. More will be written about the activities of this Sunday; we just want you to plan to come. It was good to see President Justine Yeager able to perform her duties as our lodge president. Secretary Salac read correspondence from the Brady Center thanking all for the Christmas donation of food, from the Joe Vik family for the memorial gift in his memory and from Tom Thumb reward card people. She also reported on donations that were sent in to the special committee.

Sister Carlyn Ondrusek gave the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council report, whose next meeting is February 8, hosted by SPJST Lodge 130 at Lodge 84.

Youth Club Report Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the youth made history by attending the Casa Linda Theater on its last day of existence. The youth followed that event with a trip to Braum's for ice cream and their meeting. She reported on the great facilities at the State Lockin which the youth enjoyed at the Waco Family Y. There was even a heated swimming pool! Many chaperones were present even District Three Director Johnnie Krizan came about 9 p.m. and (this is hard to believe) stayed until9l 4 a.m.. Youth Leader Bessie reported February 7 the youth will go to the rest home to visit and bring flowers, also the group will attend the initiation of new members, meeting and dinner on February 21.

On February 22, the Czech Culture Society meets for cocktails at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. as reported by Sister Bessie Petr.

Sister Cheryl Petr reported on the band hiring for 1999.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Faye Rejcek reported on the Straight and 42 domino tournaments and dates.

House Chairman Adolph Salac reported buying two wet vacuum cleaners in case water seeps into the

building. He reported that three days in a row, he met the plumbers at 7 a.m. to have the water leak located. There was a lot of digging involved. Brother Adolph is and has been retired for several years, sleeping late etc. Sister Evelyn admitted during the meeting that things should be calmer at their home after the plumbers finish.

Brother Adolph hates setting the alarm at bedtime (something retirees don't do.) So you can imagine his choice of words when the alarm wakes him, and the street lights are still burning; this man is dedicated to his lodge!

Henry Rejcek of Ennis played for dancing here last Saturday, which is the last time at Lodge 84. The music was always great and he will be missed.

We wish the best for all but especially for Henry who played the accordion so great.

Our next dance is on February 6, with the Vrazel's from Buckholts providing the music everyone enjoys.

In closing, the members wish to thank District Three Director Johnnie Krizan for installing our officers at the Christmas party. Also we enjoyed his words about the SPJST at our meeting on Monday. We thank you, Brother Krizan for the gifts; we drew numbers.

I didn't win, but I was real close—I had number 15. The winning numbers were 14 and 16. Entertainment will consist of the Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral Club performing at the noon hour. Thereafter, the Adult Folk Dancers will perform for you. Perhaps they will give you a try at the dances they perform.

Lodge 88, Houston will be awarding scholarships for the 1999 school year.

Application forms can now be picked up at the lodge office at 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas, 77008, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Applications must be postmarked

by February 28, 1999. Sorry, but applications postmarked after February 28, 1999 will not be considered.

To qualify: 1. A student must be an active member of Lodge 88 for at least two years.

2. Students must be paying local lodge dues.

88, Houston presents minutes of January meeting Lodge

President Clara Broz opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m., and Jeff Barcak, Fred Bun and A.J. Fabrygel presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The names of two deceased members were read.

Minutes were read and approved.

Correspondence was read and eleven new applicants were voted into the membership.

Reports of Officers President Broz read the appointed committees for the year 1999. The Remuneration Committee being the only one needing two elected from the floor. Viola Cox and Bob Martinak were voted as committee members.

An executive meeting is set for Tuesday, January 12th to discuss Anniversary Day on February 14.

Plans so far are to serve lunch. The Choral Club and Concert Orchestra will perform. The Dance hall Boys will play from 3 to 7 p.m.

First Vice President Marie Stayton requested all committees send a list of all members with current addresses, phone numbers and area codes and office/s held. The data is needed by January 29, 1999. February Flag Bearers will be the Board of Trustees.

Youth Leader Barbara L. Gonzales reported that the youth elected their slate of offers for 1999 and reported the youth will have a raffle, silent auction and sell ice cream at Anniversary Day. She thanked all who helped throughout the past year and for all the support extended to the youth.

Committee Reports Entertainment - Betty Theiss reported the dances were very successful in '98 even though they lost the last Saturday of each month. Dance schedules are available and can be picked up at the hall entrance.

Board of Trustees - Guenter Merkle reported that the board had their first meeting and elected officers.

Guenter remains the Chairman, John Broz, Vice Chairman and Jeanette Bender is the Secretary.

Social Night - A.J. Stayton reported his new assistant as Gene Barcak and announced the committee workers for the coming year. He also thanked Willie Wehring for helping in the transition period.

Birthday Club Sisters - Flo Orsag reported in Kathy Trefell's absence that the results of the Birthday Club election of officers for 1999. Anniversary Day, the Birthday Club will sell pastry, so please bring specialities. The Birthday Club m,eets the first and second Wednesday of each month.

Mens' Club - A.J. Stayton stated that Cleburn Lincke will be assisting along with Tom March. Tom Hainy will be planning trips during the year.

Scholarship - Josephine Pflughaupt reported that last year we gave five scholarships; however, this year no applications have been received. A motion was made to extend the deadline for returning scholarship applications to February 28, 1999. This will be advertised in the Vestnik.

Rules and Regulations - Gene Barcak stated this committee will suspend until September. Thanks to all the committee members for help.

Adult Folk Dance Club - Guenter Merkle reported a practice on Saturday at 10 a.m. until 12:30. Anyone interested in joining, please come. January 30th, Donna and Guenter will have a dance workshop in Fayetteville at Lodge 1. Anyone interested, please attend.

Choral Club - Gene reported the election of officers meeting will be held in January '99. There is a performance scheduled for Anniversary Day. District Five President Evelyn Mikeska stated that the District Five Spring Meeting is scheduled for March 7, 1999 at Lodge 88. Please make plans to attend. District offices and.

Lodge 88 will meet to discuss details soon. Regarding the ad valorem tax petitions, she requested we get signatures on the petitions. Temple will call for the petitions to be returned.

District Five District Youth Director Marie Stayton reported that the State Lock-in is scheduled for January 16.

She also stated that the District Youth Counselors are scheduled to meet January 30th at the Home Office to discuss rule changes and ways to improve the youth program statewide.

Get well wishes go out to Royal Warnesch, Lillie Spies, Mike Trefell, Bill Mikeska and A.V. Roznovsky.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported that there were 103 members present and one guest. Helen led the members in singing "Happy Birthday" to 15 celebrants.

Door prizes went to Jeff Barcak, Rose Mikeska, John Buri, Donna Merkle and Ruth Martinak and an additional prize, donated by Louis Hanus, was won by Helen Hegwood.

88, Houston plans anniversary dinner and dance Lodge

The following are the coming dances. On Friday, February 5th, we will have Texas Brew, Country Western Band - under 13 only with parents - $6 per person, and the hosts for this dance will be Georgia and Cleburn Lincke, with co-hosts Agnes and Tom Haney. On Saturday, February 6th, Bobby Layne, Big Band will perform. Dress Code will be enforced. Admission will be $11 per person. Host will be Era Richardson, with Ruth and Gene Kibbons, Jean May and Paula and Harold Waits cohosts. On Saturday February 13, Jack Melick, "The Piano Man" will be performing Big Band music. The Dress Code will be enforced. Tickets are $11 each. Hosts will be Earline Hoffman and Florian Demny with co-hosts Cora and Ted Nowak and Celestine and Rudy Darilek. Come on out for these dances. I'm sure Betty Theiss and Hosts will appreciate it.

Anniversary Celebration Don't forget our Anniversary Dinner on Sunday, February 14th, Valentine's Day. All you wonderful pastry makers bring your pastries to the lodge Birthday Club booth on that day.

Dinner served starting at 11:30 a.m. will be baked chicken and all the trimmings for $4.50 per plate, and of course, dessert is extra. The youth will be making their delicious ice cream for sale by the bowl, and they will have a silent auction. Then there will be a dance - from 3 p.m. till 7p.m., music by the Dancehall Boys. Tickets are $3 per person. Betty Theiss and Hosts will be working the dance. Hey guys, why not take your valentine out to lunch on Valentine's Day. Sounds like a fun day. Tell your friends about it.

Bingo, Fun and Food The Social Night Committee had election of officers. They are A.J. Stayton, Chairman; Gene Barcek, CoChairman; Lowrina Lindemann,

Secretary; Naomi Spencer, Recording Treasurer and Tim Kostom, Prize Bookkeeper. There are other members of the committee, but I will mention them in a later article.

Come on out and play bingo with us every Thursday night. The popcorn committee, King Hegwood and Calvin Orsag, make delicious popcorn. The Youth Club sells hamburgers, hot dogs and nachos. Occasionally, someone will bake a cake, and the youth will sell it by the slice. A cake was baked and donated last Thursday. It all helps the youth make money for their projects.

Dona and Pres Clooney went to Las Vegas the first part of January. I don't think they brought back much money but I'm sure they had a great time.

Helen and King Hegwood went to Laughlin, Nevada. Wanda and Noel Kennedy went with them. Helen said they had a wonderful time, and she and King both won some money. Ellen and Ed Miculka went to Coushatta for Ed's birthday last week. They had a great time but didn't win any money.

Glenda Jurchak's mother passed away on January 17th. She was Jackie Mosley, who lived in Madisonville, Texas. Her funeral was on January 19th. Glenda is the daughter-in-law of Georgie and Sydney Jurchak. Our prayers are with the family.

I learned today that Roy Stonaker passed away from a massive heart attack on January 19. He was buried on January 21. You remember his wife, Shirley, was our lodge secretary for a while. We were sorry to hear about this.

Let me tell you about a couple who has been married a lo-o-o-ong time.

They are Adella and Henry Kite. On February 13, they will be married 65 years. They were married in the Catholic Church at Halletsville, Texas and have been members of the lodge about 20 years. Tell them 'Happy Anniversary". That's quite an achievement, Adella and Henry.

Jerry Ennis has been in the hospital.

He had a heart attack, but has gone home. Hope you are feeling much better, Jerry. Then Almeida Bravanec had knee surgery. She is doing quite well now.

I had a phone call from Alice Bily this morning. She and three sons and daughters-in-law and son Paul went to Las Vegas. They had a great time.

They went to the New York, New York Casino and saw Lord of the Dance.

Alice also has a new great grandson.

His name is Alan Michael Bily and his parents are Mike and Michele Bily. He was born on January 22.

92, Fort Worth reports on lodge, member activities Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, I am sure many of you like me do not make resolutions as to what I will be during the year, but one thing I will promise is that I will attend the lodge meetings and go to church. With that being said, our next lodge meeting will be on Sunday, February 14, 1999 starting at 2 p.m. You need the lodge as much as the lodge needs you. Some of our younger members may not know what our lodge does for us.

This is not just my history of Lodge 92, but I did join in 1932 and have tried to attend the meetings. In the early days of the lodge meetings, they were held in an orderly manner. You only spoke when you were recognized.

Let me tell you what Lodge 92 has done for its members. First, the old members built lodge halls for members to enjoy dances and perform Czech plays. During World War Two, the lodge paid the insurance premiums for the ones that had to go to the service.

Today, Lodge 92 members over the age of 65 do not pay any lodge dues. The Sunshine person sends get well cards to the sick and sympathy cards and flowers to families of deceased members. At Christmas time, Lodge 92 gives bags of fruit, candy, nuts to all children and members that are present.

A few of us do take the bags to the elderly and to the homebound. After the lodge meetings, a meal is prepared, and the ladies always bring pastries.

So you see, the SPJST does a lot for its members. This means that if you put some time into the lodge, you will reap a lot. What insurance company does this for the policy holders? I, as well as all members of Lodge 92, appreciate what it does for its members. Past President John Kennedy said it best when he said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

Soon, the Supreme Lodge will be having the annual workshop and Incentive Banquet-for the officers and all sales representatives. They will be honoring the sales persons for selling the SPJST Life Insurance and Annuities. Be sure to read the Vestnik and the calendar section as to what is going on in our lodge and at other lodges.

Our next dance will be a country and western dance on March 7. These dances are held from 3 p.m to 7 p.m. on Sunday evenings. Then March 21, 1999, the very popular Don Peachey from Burnet, Wisconsin will play from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. I promise that you will really enjoy his music — Czech

Our past president, Vincent Hechler, underwent quadruple by-pass surgery on January 8 and is recovering nicely.

On January 6, Danbury Lodge 139 held its dinner-meeting at EJ's Restaurant. Beside the regular attendees, member Bill Wilson of Friendswood and Simon Cook of the United Kingdom were in attendance.

Simon was in Texas leading a birdwatching group from England and was a guest of the Wilson family. His group toured along the Texas sea coast from High Island to Brownsville and saw over 230 different birds.

Lorenda Baldwin reported all the turkeys were delivered to members aged 70 years and over in time for Christmas.

This year, the Danbury RVOS and SPJST lodges will hold their barbecue dinners together. It will be held February 27 at the Ponderosa Hall in Alvin. Members are asked to bring desserts. All members will receive invitations and are asked to please make their reservations if they plan to attend. More information will be forthcoming after our February meeting.

At 2 p.m. on Sunday January 10, 1999, President Keith Kieschnick called our regular meeting to order.

All 34 members plus one guest present stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call of officers by Secretary Alice Jochen showed all were present.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read by the secretary and accepted after a correction.

All officers' reports were given.

Under new business our dates for meetings in 1999 were set—February 14, March 14, April 11, May 2, June 13, July 11, August 8, September 12, October 10, November 14, December 12, and the Christmas party is set for Saturday, December 4, 1999.

Senior door prize went to Elmo Walther-74 years. Birthday for January was Terry Kieschnick on January 11, 1999. There were no anniversaries in January.

The Capsule prize for $90 went unclaimed due to the absence of Eric Majorwitz and David Roznowski.

Next month the February prize goes to $100. If there is no winner, then the prize is to be distributed from the register book.

The Temple Ronald McDonald House is one of many throughout the country that assists parents of ill children with housing while the youngsters receive treatment.

Lodge 177, Academy President Bill Hutka presents $200 donation on behalf of the lodge to Ruth Allen, representing the Temple Meals on Wheels Program nd the Temple Harvest House. The Meals on Wheels program provides meals to the elderly, disabled and shut-ins in the Temple area.

Barbara Rosenkranz. We thank Barbara for helping us to fill out the FAC report to the Supreme Lodge.

Because this is such an important report, it is always scarry as we don't know always understand what can or cannot be counted as a fraternal act.

And who can possibly remember all the hours?

It was noted the installation of the emergency lights and fire extinguishers have been completed thereby lowering the insurance premium considerably.

Thanks to Bill Hilcher, Joe Hurtik an John Hilcher. We also opted to buy the pay phone which eliminates the monthly payment.

Thanks to John Hilcher for looking after the well and pipes during the cold weather. This is no easy task.

The New Year's party and dance was great. The Cadillac Cowboys Band belted out some great music to usher in the New Year.

All officers were present and made good reports.

We welcomed new members Joe and Carmon Babina and Tom Spencer.

202, Jourdanton donates food to ACCEPT Lodge

Lodge 202 met for its first meeting of 1999 on January 3 at the Jourdanton State Bank Community Room.

We had six members and one guest present.

District Director Bob Bayer presented the lodge with a check from Supreme Lodge for attending monthly meetings.

A report was given on our Christmas dinner which everyone enjoyed. After the meal, District Director Bob Bayer installed the officers for 1999. We also collected quite a few non-perishable foods for ACCEPT, a charitable organization in Atascosa County. The food was delivered on December 17, 1998 to the coordinator of ACCEPT by Mary Ann Barta and Gus and Melba Novosad.

We have seven new members in our lodge. We wish to welcome them to our lodge and encourage them to attend our meetings.

After the meeting, we enjoyed refreshments furnished by Isabel Ventrcek and Christine Ventrcek.

Our next meeting will be February 7 at 2:30 p.m. At Jourdanton State Bank.

Wednesday, September 9, 1998—VESTNIKJ17 we sing it in Czech, as she had made copies of the song in Czech for all of the ladies. Anna Marie first read the words in Czech to familiarize the nonCzechs with the words. Most of the ladies graciously tried and did quite well; others were not game enough to try, but it turned out quite well.

Secretary Millie Elzner read the minutes which were accepted as read.

Due to the illness of her husband, Jesse, Norma Baker was not in attendance, therefore the treasurer's report was not given.

Ann Marie Moss suggested that since Heidi Spanger lives out of town and has been unable to attend any meetings, that she be dropped from our membership.

Christmas cards for Lottie Ramey and Leona Matula were passed around for members to sign Dorothy McCoy and her helpers were given a big thank you for having decorated the hall so very beautifully for our Christmas dinner. Lovely candle centerpieces provided by Dorothy M. graced each dining table. Dorothy M. was also responsible for furnishing our delicious main entree - baked turkey and dressing.

She also provided several nice door prizes. She thanked all those who had called to say they were bringing a guest; this helped her determine how much food to prepare.

Anna Marie mentioned that one of our younger members, Jennifer Marek, is to be graduated from A & M, Corpus Christi in January 1999 and will be getting married in February 1999.

She thought that it would be nice to have a wedding shower for her at our January meeting. After a bit of discussion, it was decided that those who wanted to give a gift should consolidate their cash and buy a few nicer gifts rather than many smaller ones.

Millie Elzner took up the collection for this purpose. Jennifer had registered at Penney's and Target for her gift selections.

Lillian Cavill thanked the Circle for the birthday card and flowers sent to her when she was hospitalized recently with a heart condition. Betty Jurica and Edna Voldan both thanked the group for gifts received during their recent illnesses.

Birthday girls honored in December were Millie Elzner, Lillian Cavill, Carrie Veselka, Diane McRae and Leona Matula.

About 20 people won some unusual, interesting and lovely door prizes.

A sumptuous, delightful Christmas dinner was enjoyed by alll Jerry Elzner was quite visible at the party wearing a very flashy, sparkling green Christmas tie. He explained that he had "inherited" it from good friend, Jim Havranek, who died several months ago.

The next meeting will be January 7, 1999.

• Jerry Elzner had delivered to Women's Shelter the canned foods, gifts, etc., which the Circle had collected in December. Jerry also took pictures of our lovely decorated Christmas tables to be used in our scrapbook.

Special Presentation Circle member, Rose Huff, age 92, was honored for her 75 years of membership in Sokol. She was unable to attend the meeting to receive her 75year membership pin, so SPJST President Jerry Sijansky attended our meeting to make the presentation.

Rosie's son, Victor Huff, was also present. Cameras were flashing as the pin was being presented to Rose; photos were also taken of Rose with her proud son. It was a really special occasion.

Birthday girls who were honored this month were Betty Jurica, Mary Elzner, Frances Kosarek, Marcellina Mokry, and Anna Marie Moss. Jerry Elzner took their pictures which will also go into the scrapbook.

Edna Voldan asked for prayers for her son, James Tolson. He is in Spohn Hospital suffering from ulcers and needs blood. We pray for a speedy recovery, James.

Door prizes were awarded to several lucky recipients.

Jennifer Marek was presented for our meeting. The soon-to-be bride opened the shower gifts given by the Circle women. She received many lovely, useful gifts. Jerry Eizner again took pictures of Jennifer and her gifts.

A great lunch of barbecue brisket with all the trimmings and several delicious pies and cakes provided by the kitchen hostesses were enjoyed by everyone.

Nancy Pieper as well as Forrest and DeLaine Dittrich are collecting history on the school; they would like to hear from local historians and former students about their memories, names of classmates, activities, etc.

They have received names of the Sisters of Divine Providence and Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament who taught them from 1882 to 1954. Louise Orsak and Mrs. Frank Schovajsa taught from 1954 - 56. The committee also received from nuns five different group photos of 1892 students. These photos will be displayed at the reunion with hopes to identify the students; please bring old family photos to compare as well as your school snapshots to display.

Language Class for beginners scheduled in Rosenberg Czech

Beginning Tuesday, March 2, 1999 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m, Czech language instruction for beginners will be held at the Czech Moravian Center located at 2220 4th Street in Rosenberg, Texas.

The instructor, originally from Prague, Czech Republic, will teach twelve lessons. Registration is from January 13 through February 13, 1999.

There is a fee of $60 per person.

The class is sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend County.

Marek-Jezek-Kotrla Family Reunion We would like to extend a warm welcome to all descendants of the Marek-Jezek-Kotrla families and hope you will be able to join us at our annual reunion. In Memoriam In Memory of Gladys Chaloupka Beloved mother, grandmother and sister, Gladys Chaloupka passed away November 30, 1998.

Gladys was born on September 24, 1927 in Beliville, Texas. She was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist-Bellaire, a volunteer with Literacy Advance and a member of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy Ernest Chaloupka in 1988.

Resolution Committee, Winnifred Susan Willie Mae Kuykendall

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 23, Moravia, Texas, on the behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed brother, MILTON MELVIN KUBOS, age 72, of Spring, Texas. He was born to Henry and Teresie Kubos on March 30, 1926 at Moravia, Texas and passed away on December 19, 1998 at the Northwest Medical Center in Houston after a battle with cancer for over a year; his family was by his side.

Milton received his education at Moravia School and was raised in the country. Milton helped on the farm until he was called to serve in the Army in 1944. He was discharged in 1946. He returned to Moravia to help his folks farm, but in 1948, he left Moravia to go work for Folgers Coffee Company in Houston where he worked for 27 years. Later, he worked for the Maryland Club Coffee Company and then for the Harris Company before retiring.

On July 18, 1949, he married Margaret Klesel in St. John, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; three sons, Harlan, of Spring, Texas, Harris and his wife, Mimi, of Brenham and Dennis and wife, Valerie, of Hockley; two grand-

sons and four granddaughters; a sister, Lillie and her husband, Edward Hieman, of El Campo, Texas.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia for over 50 years; his wife and sons are also members.

This man has touched many lives.

He always enjoyed coming back to Moravia and meeting his old friends and singing Czech with them at picnics weddings or whatever occasion there was.

Funeral services were held at the Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home in Schulenburg with a wake service on Sunday night. The funeral was on Monday, December 21, 1998 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Henry Reseda officiating.

Burial was at St. John's Cemetery.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Danbury Lodge 139, wish to express our sincere condolences to the family of RAYMOND WAGNER of Angleton. He was born to Jim H. and Albina Wagner in Moulton on January 31, 1926 and died on Wednesday, December 30, 1998 at the age of 72.

Mr. Wagner served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a long time operator of Wagner Dragline and Dozer Services.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evelyn Nevill and Geraldine Hinkle.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Jo Wagner, of Angleton; three daughters, Suzanne Menzel of Pasadena, Cindy Atkins and Pam Goodson, both of Angleton; two sons, Rayland Wagner and Ricky Wagner, both of Angleton; two stepdaughters, Karen Cook of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Marian Murray of Houston; two stepsons, Jerry Dodger of Dale and Doug Dodger of Arlington; one sister, Georgia Woods of Angleton; two brothers, Arnold Wagner of south Houston and James Wagner of Angleton; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; and one stepgrandchild.

The rosary was recited on January 1, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton.

Services were conducted Saturday, January 2, 1999 at Palms Funeral Home with Deacon Andy Shefts officiating. Interment followed in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Danbury.

Pallbearers were Tommy Atkins, Chris Atkins, Jonathan Wagner, Milton Goodson III, Leyton Jeter and Terry Novak.

Honorary pallbearers were Frank Murray, Doug Dodgen, Jerry Dodgen, Bob Hinchman, G.L. "Bubba" Rouse, Jim Clawson and past commissioners of the Iowa Colony Drainage District.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 54, West, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest condolences to the family and many friends of our departed lodge sister, LILLIE ELLEN GARNER SNAPKA, age 77 of Arlington, formerly of Abbott, who passed away November 25, 1998 in Arlington.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m.

November 28 at Arlington Funeral Home Chapel in Arlington. Burial followed at Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington.

Lil was born February 2, 1921 in Abbott to Frances and Emil Popp. She had three brothers and one sister who is still living in Arlington. After graduating from Abbott High School in 1938, she attended Draughons Business College in Dallas. During this time, she worked as a nanny for room and board until graduation. She then returned to Abbott and worked for no pay, but experience only, for a lawyer in West for about one year. She then went to work at Sears in Hillsboro where she met Albert Leroy "Bub" Garner. They were married on November 26, 1941. They were married four 37 years until his death in 1978. They had one son, John "Bubba" who died in February, 1967 of cancer and a daughter, Sandra Ellen, who died at birth. In the early 1950s, Lil went to work for Arlington State Bank as a teller until she retired to marry her second husband, George Snapka. They were married until his death in 1986.

In 1989, she and her sister, Fran, were able to visit their mother's home in Czechoslovakia where they met several cousins for the first time. They were able to visit their mother's church.

Lil was a member of the West Brethren Church and the Christian Sisters in West. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Since moving to Hearthstone Assisted Living in March of this year. She had mad many new friends and was named resident of the month for September.

She was very happy and thankful to have such a nice place to live in her last days. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Sister Snapka was a member of Lodge 54, West.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Frances and her husband, Jim Gipson and Janis Marie "Janie" and her husband, Tommy Alverson; one sister, Frances and her husband, Bob Weatherholt; grandchildren, Marcie

December 22, 1998 at West Brethren Church, with Dr. Don Ketcham officiating. Burial followed at West Brethren Cemetery.

Mr. Chupik was born on November 24 1907 in the Tokio community near West, the son of Stephen and Anna Chupik. He married Marie Ida Wedeking on November 20, 1935 in West. She preceded him in death on August 7, 1994 after 59 years of marriage. He was a farmer and rancher for all of his life, before retiring in 1972.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 54 in West and the West Brethren Church where he served on the church council and was a member of the Men's Brotherhood.

He is also prededed in death by a daughter, Ruth Marie Owen, who died on April 28, 1996.

He is survived by four sons, Bohus, (Buddy) Chupik, Jr., of Aquilla, John Chupik of Heath, Stephen Chupik of Aquilla, and Jimmy Chupik of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two daughters, Betty Lindeman and Carol Pekar, both of Flower Mound; three sisters, Mary Pace of Lubbock, Lydia Waters of Everman, and Helen Couch of Houston; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Sam Owen, Kevin Chupik, Troy Chupik, Tim Sulak, Eddie Bartley and Mark Hessel.

The family recieved visitors from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. December 21 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the West Brethren church or to the charity of your choice.

Mr. Janacek died January 21, 1999 in a Temple hospital. He was born in Cyclone to Steve and Frances Mayer Janacek. He married Ruth Kotrla Schiller in 1980 and served in the Army Air Corps. He was a farmer and worked at Wendland Grain before working at and retiring from Duplex Products. He lived in the Temple area all his life and was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 47 at Seaton.

Survivors are his wife, Ruth Kotrla Schiller Janacek of Temple; two sisters, Agnes Schiller of Temple and Frances Cabla of Oscar; and one brother, Henry Janacek of Seaton.

Memory of Mary Dee Walenta In

Funeral services were held for Mary Dee Jakubik Walenta of Richmond, January 20 at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Needville, with interment following at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. The Reverend Dan Walker officiated the services.

Mary Dee was born April 4, 1927 in Brown Community of Fort Bend County to Emil and Gertrude Toss Jakubik, and she passed away on January 18, 1999 in Polly Ryan Skilled Nursing Facility at the age of 71 years', nine months and 14 days.

She was united in marriage with Lee F. Walenta on September 18, 1947 in Needville by the late Reverend J.R. Vilt. To this union, was born one son, Leldon Walenta.

Mary Dee was employed by the Lamar Consolidated High School Food Service for five years and then by Texas Instruments, Inc., for approximately 15 years.

She was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church over 50 years, a member of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville

and a member of the American Legion Unit 2271 of Rosenberg for 43 years.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Lee Fred Walenta, of Richmond; a son Leldon Walenta and his wife, Nancy, of Missouri City; two granddaughters, Jayme Walenta, a senior at the University of Texas at Austin, and Shara Walenta, a senior at John Foster Dulles High School in Missouri City; one brother, Emil Jakubik of Fairchild; three sisters, Darlene Pisklak, Lorene Batke and her husband, Len and Helene Petrosky and her husband, Edmund, of Rosenberg; several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Arrangements were under the direction of Davis Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg.

Survivors include his wife; his mother, Kathryn Garrison of Fort Worth; and two sons, Michael and Matthew, both at home.

His father, and grandparents Walter and Mary Hale preceded him in death.

George was an Air Force veteran.

He was an operating engineer in Texas. He later worked for Caterpillar Inc., last working in 1990.

He bowled in several leagues at Landmark, BowlMor and Town and Country Bowling Alleys.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Lodge 9, Snook youth club members enjoy state lock-in Dear Vestnik Readers, I went to the State Lock-in and workshop on Jauary 16 and 17. It was at the Waco Y in Waco, Texas. We played basketball, karaoke, swimming, volleyball, watched movies and ate pizza. I slept from 4 a.m. to 5:30 a.m.

Lodge 24, Cyclone youth leaders announce meeting change Dear Cyclone Youth Club: Hello everyone! Since our last meeting, I have found out that the District Two roller skating party will be held on February 21 at 5:30 p.m. so after talking to a few people I have decided to hold our meeting on the same day. The time will be changed to 2:30 p.m. This should give us plenty of time to have the Valentine party following the meeting and not have a big wait for skating.

As always, you can bring snacks and door prizes for extra points, and if you want to try to win a special prize, bring a homemade Valentine for the contest of the funniest and most unusual Valentine. Just one will do. You may also bring Valentines to exchange. If you want to, you can bring a friend.

There are only four months left of the youth club year. You need to have seven meetings in by May 31 so you can attend camp and enter Youth Achievement Day. Y. A. D. is a time to, show off your talents. If you are planning to be in Royalty, you may want to start writing you speech. Winter is a good time of year to do crafts. Start early so you will have plenty of time to do something great! Winners get money for their hard work.

We ate hot dogs, beans, green beans, etc. Then the kids had their meeting and craft, which was bean soup. It was made out of all`sorts of different kinds of beans. Then we had to have clean up because there was a mess of raw beans and peas on the floor. After that, we left.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club members participate in lock-in On Saturday, January 16th, SPJST had a State Lock-in held in Waco, Texas. It started at about 8:30 p.m. and was over at 7 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Everyone enjoyed swimming, shooting hoops, playing racquetball and just mingling with newly-made friends.

Pizza came at about 9 p.m., and it disappeared quickly. The lock-in was held at the Waco Family Y. I know many people who are already looking forward to it next year.

CZECH HERITAGE AND CULTURE

The Czech Cultural Center Houston/Prague Arts Council hosts Czech pianist Radoslav Kvapil February 14 In celebration of its three years of existence, the newly founded Czech Cultural Center of Houston has arranged for an appearance of the Day's concert-recital will take place Sunday, February 14 at 3 p.m. at St Mark Lutheran Church in Houston.

Mr. Kvapil is especially known for his imaginative interpretation of the music of Czech composers, Dvorak, Smetana, Janacek, Vorisek, Dussek, Suk and Martinu. He has performed in more that 25 countries sympathy orchestras world-wide. A recent performance with the Berlin Philharmonic was received with much enthusiasm. His flamboyant, energetic and commanding style continues to delight audiences.

Kvapil's talents include promotion of fine music. He founded the Southern Bohemia Festival in 1975, which has since enjoyed annual festivities. An invitation to British music and musicians brought a month-long presentation of concerts to Prague, Bratislava and Brno. His concerts and recordings are especially enjoyed in England where he continues to be a favorite performer.
