Premium Refunds

Last week, local lodge secretaries received their lodge's annual premium refund checks. The checks were mailed by Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas' office on January 18.

"It's always a pleasure getting these checks out to the lodges," says Brother Mikulas. "I know that they'll be put to good use."

According to Brother Mikulas, the annual process of sending premium refund checks to local lodges dates back to 1961, the result of of a 1960 SPJST Convention action. At the outset, the idea for the refund was to serve as compensations to local lodges in exchange for their collection of insurance premiums from lodge members.

"These days - thanks to direct billing - members send their insurance premiums directly to the Home Office for procession," Brother Mikulas explains. "In spite of that

It remains an attractive incentive for local lodges to bring new members aboard," Refunds to lodges for 1998 were paid at a rate of $8.50 per premium paying certificate and $1 per paid-up certificate as of December 31, 1998.

Premium refunds to lodges total approximately $165,000 in 1999. The premium refunds that went out last week are in addition to the approximately $40,000 in incentive awards that many lodges will be received at the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet on February 27 at Lodge 177, Academy.

Any goodwill donations that are received will be cheerfully accepted and directed to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund.

We were honored to have Mr. Gene McBride and Mr. Johnnie Krizan with us from the Home Office. We appreciated very much their taking the time to come and their glowing words of praise and encouragement.

Our building program was discussed and a proposed floor plan was on display. Bill Heitzman gave a report on insurance costs on the proposed facility. Loans have been approved.

Johnnie Krizan gave a very enlightening talk on financing. The motion was made and seconded to proceed with the building program. It was voted on and approved. Gene McBride had some words of praise and encouragement.

He also challenged our own Donnie Koerner to a barbecue cookoff. Hey, this is gonna be interesting!

The tickets sold at this meeting netted $105. Marcella Koerner had the winning ticket and received $52.50 the other half went into the building fund.

Our thanks to Gene McBride for a number of SPJST items for door prizes.

The auction item this month was bought by Robert David for $80.

President David volunteered to bring the item for the auction at the February meeting.

reports on December meeting and Christmas party The Granger SPJST Lodge 20 held their Christmas party and annual meeting Sunday, December 6, 1998 at the lodge hall.

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Rudy Hajda. President Leslie Loessin was absent due to illness.

The minutes were read and approved as read by the secretary.

A Christmas card to our lodge was read from Mr. and Mrs. Frank Klinkovsky by the secretary.

Gilbert Strmiska, Chairman of the Property Committee, gave the property report.

We had our annual 100 Pennies Drive to help pay for scholarships that are given away each year.

The Tarok Tournament was held at the lodge hall on Saturday, December 5, 1998. Thanks to all those who helped with the tournament.

Ed Sladecek was recognized for receiving his 50-year pin.

—SPJST(Editor's Note: The following article, which appeared in a November issue of the Dallas Morning News, recalls the tragic death of President John E Kennedy and the lasting impact it had on the lives of the people of Dallas, including two SPJST members, Adolph and Evelyn Salac of Lodge 84, Dallas.)

Evelyn Salac and a friend took a long lunch break from their jobs at an insurance company to see the president and first lady ride through the streets of Dallas.

"Oh, it was beautiful. He was waving and smiling and his wife, Jacqueline, was so pretty in that pink dress," recalled Mrs. Salac, who still lives in northwest Dallas.

Walking back to their car, they heard a radio report that something had happened to the motorcade.

"After that, everybody was in shock," she said. "Every police siren in Dallas was ringing. It was just chaos. We were all scared to death.

Everybody went home and was glued to the TV." Mrs. Salac and her husband had just celebrated their anniversary.

As the nations mourned that long weekend, they drove downtown to leave the orchid she had received on their special day.

"I just wanted to do it," said Mrs. Salac, 78. "I had it in the refrigerator so it would keep a long time. It was still crisp and pretty."

This was was my 23rd wedding anniversary orchid which I intended to press, but now it's in memory of our great president JOHN F. KENNEDY —Mrs. Adolph Salac, Dallas.

She remembered the guilt Dallas suffered and the cutting comments when she and her husband traveled to other states.

"People would say, 'Oh, you're from the city that killed the president.' That hurt," Mrs. Salac said.

"I don't know why he was such an electric personality. I like most all the presidents, something about them, maybe not everything.

"But I was very impressed with Kennedy. And his marriage to Jacqueline, it was like a storybook thing. He was just all the world."

Ten days ago, on November 12, the Salacs added another chapter to their own remarkable story. "Our 58th wedding anniversary."

Lodge 40, El CampoHillje reports on January meeting On Wednesday, January 6, 1999, Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje held its monthly meeting at the lodge hall at 7 p.m. with six officers, four trustees and approximately 40 members present.

President Bennie Reck called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silent prayer was observed for both of our ill and deceased members.

Roll call of officers showed all present as well as all trustees.

The minutes were approved as read.

President Bennie Reck read and acted on all correspondence from the Home Office.

A general overview of our finances was given by Treasurer Madline Shimek.

The youth leader gave her report on the youth. club. Michele Kunz invites and, urges all of our eligible youth to come out and visit one of her meetings.

At this time, we had an election.

Karel Matejka made a motion to accept Michele Kunz as youth leader. The motion was seconded by Edmond Kana. The motion passed. Michele Kunz is our youth leader.

Due to a controversial view on how the Audit Committee was appointed, a new audit was called to be held in the near future.

Chuck Schwartzkopf outlined a number of by-laws, rules and regulations that have not been observed by SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje. A discussion was held on the subject.

Special guest from the Home Office, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar installed the new officers.

President Howard Leshikar suggested that a Grievance Committee would be in order at this time. Karel Matejka made a motion to have five members on the committee, seconded by Rita Vanek. Those selected and accepted by the membership were: Sheldon Holub, Allen Bacak, Michele Kunz, Elizabeth Schilhab and Lorraine Kana.

SPJST Lodge 40, El Camp-Hillje lost two of its members, Connie Lynn Trochta and Jimmy V. Hubenak.

Lodge 40 membership extends their sympathy to the families and friends in the loss of their loved ones.

Memorial gifts to the SPJST scholarship fund were made in memory of Henry Maresh, Melvin Marek, Bertha Kunetka and Della Holub in the amount of $40. A donation $25 was made to Hospice Health Care.

Rita Vanek gave a report on how the bingo is doing and the rules and regulations governing the bingo. Thank you, Rita, for this information.

The January birthday celebrants are: Ruby Kunz, Frank Divin, Angeline Belik, Edmund Kana and Rose Schipula, and guess who won the birthday cake? I did, and it was enjoyed by all present. I would like to wish a Happy Birthday to all Lodge 40 January honorees.

Thank you to our special guest, Howard Leshikar, for the door prize items he brought to our meeting.

At this time, I am asking all of our membership to please let us know if you are ill, had surgery or are recovering from an illness.

Lodge 49, Rowena Installs 1999 Officers

Lodge 87, Temple rings in the new year The first meeting of 1999 took place on January 12 and was called to order after our meal. Immediate Past President Don Alford prepared his chicken soup in excellent fashion and it was, as usual, delicious! We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence for our departed members. The minutes and Treasurer's report were approved as read and we moved on to consider our correspondence.

Treasurer Daryl Entrop read off the names of our three new members who were unanimously welcomed into our lodge. We are excited to be in the running for a higher lodge incentive award this year than last. We once again offered kudos to our sales representatives who have worked so hard!

Following this routine business, Brother Alford installed the new officers. It was a solemn and moving occasion as we recited our oaths of office responsively with him under the flag of our country. After the ceremony, President Norma Alford took over his gavel with flair and called her first meeting to order.

Sister Thelma Groppell began her second term as Fraternal Activities Coordinator and presented her report.

There were no January birthdays to celebrate, but she was able to announce a number of upcoming tournaments.

We were especially interested in this year's horseshoe tournament, since our own Brother Doug Waskow is the reigning champion!

Sister Groppell and Sister Bertha Capps will once again serve as our Audit Committee. We thank them for their time and effort. Sister Capps was also able to report on the successful delivery of our Christmas sponsorship of a motherless family in Moffat.

Next month's meeting will be at 7 p.m. on February 9 and will be a covered dish affair. Now for some good news. Rudolph and Claudia Koci will be having their 40th wedding anniversary on February 14, 1999. It is always good to hear that two loved ones can enjoy life together for so many years. Bill and Bea Adami will be leaving for a Caribbean Cruise for a week or more. We are sure they will enjoy seeing the different countries and peoples. We hope they do not get seasick.

I have some sad news to report. We have had a very good member or pass away, Minnie Ruzicka, 88, in a San Antonio on December 22, 1998. The funeral service was held at the Shannon's Northside Chapel. Minnie was born in Buckholts on April 28, 1910. She was a lifetime member of our lodge and was active in many

things at our lodge. She was a good cook and was noted for making such good kolaches and homemade pickles.

Mrs. Ruzicka was preceded in death by her husband Robert Ruzicka in 1981.

Survivors are a son Calvin Ruzicka of Arlington, Texas; a daughter, Gladys Burkhalter of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Ella Praslicka of Keller; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.. Everyone did love Minnie, and we shall miss her at our lodge. Anton Fojtasek of Dallas, brother of sisters Anna Lesikar and Laura Posival both of Fort Worth, had been in bad health for several years. Lodge 92 members do express sympathy to the families of the deceased.

We have several members over the age of 65 who are having birthdays.

The lodge does send out cards to them.

92, Fort Worth Ladies' Circle reports on January meeting Lodge

The Ladies' Circle of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, January 12, 1999 at the lodge hall with 49 members, four men and one guest, Robin Brownlee present.

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Mary Ann Gibson, who presided in the absence of President Helen Kubala. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Newly elected secretary, Betty Lindsay called on Martha Durham to read the minutes of December 8, 1998 meeting,which were read and approved. Then Betty Lindsay read an appreciation card from Edward P. Bass, Chairman, acknowledging the Ladies' Circle gift of a $50 contribution to the Childrens' Education Program at the Bass Performance Hall. The SPJST Rest Home Number One sent a thank you card from Woody Richards, Administrator, in appreciation for the $25 donation supporting their facility in Taylor, Texas for so many years.

Mona Lee Hattendorf sent a thank you "from the bottom of my heart" card. A list of items received for Mona Lee Hattendorf's kitchen shower on December 1998 were not read at the January 12 meeting, but will be recognized at next month's meeting.

Treasurer Evelyn Spacek gave the bank 'account balance and followed it with her Sunshine Report. She reminded all members to pay their $3 annual dues promptly. January and February are the months to pay your dues.

Martha Durham reported that Elamay Faraizl and Edward Faraizl

purchased one shrub each giving a total of 427 shrubs to date. Also, Martha hopes to have a new updated address list of members in March.

New Business The Ladies' Circle will contribute $300 from our savings account to SPJST Lodge 92, National Hall.

Florence Greer made the motion, and it was seconded by Billye Starr; all members approved.

Hostess Chairperson, Jo Prochaska thanked Aurora Naldino, Clara Marchioni, Mary Windham and Florence Freer for their hostess duties today and announced February hostesses to be Elizabeth Howard, Mary Ann Kozel, Mona Lee Hattendorf and Victoria Murphy.

Door prize winners for January were Betty Loyd, Ima Lou La Plant, Jo Prochaska and Billye Starr.

January birthday celebrities were.

Emory Davenport, Ruby Gilmore, Julia Dueser, Joe Gregory, Mona Lee Hattendorf, Frank Kovar, Lorenda Manasco, Tuna Meislohm and Kitty Rippin. . The ladies sang "Happy Birthday" and many more to these members.

Hall Manager Joyce Tesar gave her report regarding upcoming dance with the Henry Rejcek Orchestra playing their last dance for us because Henry will be retiring. The band will play from 4 to 7 p.m. Admission is $6 per person. Also, Joyce stated that only members of the SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth over the age of 70 will be issued I. D. cards for free passes to the dances and activities at the National Hall.

Thanks to Martha Durham for helping with my first attempt as secretary/reporter of the Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth. With time, I will be more familiar with members' names and the recording of the minutes. See you on Tuesday, February 8, 1999.

139, Danbury and RVOS host barbecue February 27 in Alvin Lodge

On January 6, Danbury Lodge 139 held its dinner-meeting at EJ's Restaurant. Beside the regular attendees, member Bill Wilson of Friendswood and Simon Cook of the United Kingdom were in attendance.

Simon was in Texas leading a birdwatching group from England and was a guest of the Wilson family. His group toured along the Texas sea coast from High Island to Brownsville and saw over 230 different birds.

Lorenda Baldwin reported all the turkeys were delivered to members aged 70 years and over in time for Christmas This year, the Danbury RVOS and SPJST lodges will hold their barbecue dinners together. It will be held February 27 at the Ponderosa Hall in Alvin. Members are asked to bring desserts. All members will receive invitations and are asked to please make their reservations if they plan to

Our past president, Vincent Hechler, underwent quadruple by-pass surgery on January 8 and is recovering nicely.

Member Mollie Garner of Salado is doing very well after successful surgery for removal of a tumor. The lodge wishes a speedy recovery to both.

The meal and fellowship following the meeting was enjoyed by all.

177, Academy celebrates note-burning Lodge

At the Christmas party for Lodge 177, Academy, charter members and members celebrated the official burning of the note. Here's a brief history regarding the lodge: The date was January 1975, and the dream was alive in Academy, Texas to build a new SPJST Lodge, later named Lodge 177, Academy. Thirteen years and several thousands of man hours later, Academy Lodge 177 was "paid in full" according to the Supreme Lodge, SPJST. The note was paid seven years ahead of schedule (in 1988) due to the hard work and dedication of the lodge members. Way to go!

The first officers of the lodge were: Jerry Tomastik, President; Dorothy Lisenbe, Secretary; Jackie Beck, Treasurer; and Josie Mitchell, Financial Secretary. All but one of the original officers are still members of the lodge. Jerry Tomastik died in 1997.

Since 1975, Lodge 177 has been a very active part of not only the local Little River/Academy community, but also that of Temple and Belton. Due to its charitable status and contributions, many organizations have benefitted from the generosity of the lodge and its members. In fact, SPJST Lodge 177 is known state-wide for its charitable donations, and the members are very proud of it!

Dear Members, Lodge 169, Brenham, Texas held its meeting at Eddie's Market and Restaurant at 7 p.m. on January 19, 1999 with 13 members present. Many members were out ill; a silent prayer was said for a deceased member.

The officers elected are as follows: President Mary Januszewski Vice President Annette Bilski Secretary Patsy Brendig Treasurer Frieda Bedner We are starting a volunteer program, such as grocery shopping, visiting, helping others in need, in any way.

A vote was taken to meet four times this year: March 16, June 15, September 21, and December 21 which is the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.

179, Warrenton reports on January meeting Lodge

Members of Lodge 179, Warrenton met for their first meeting of the year on January 14 at 7 p.m.

President Goehring started the meeting and everyone joined him in the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Kunkel read the November and December minutes and Treasurer Bea Vasek gave her report. Financial Secretary Alfred Baack accepted local lodge dues. Those present handed in their Fraternal Service worksheets.

Laverne Kunkel, Leroy Levien and Helen Leonhardt observed January birthdays. Three couples were present that have been blessed with many years of married life. Lydia and Arnold Peters celebrated 60 years on January 1; Gladys and Alfred Baack celebrated 51 years on January 9; and Helen and Lee L,eonhardt celebrated 55 years on January 10.

186, Caldwell reports on December, January meetings Lodge

December 8, 1998, SPJST Lodge 186 in Caldwell, Texas held its monthly meeting. Following the meeting the installation of officers was held.

Officers for 1999 are: President Clint Luksa Vice President Bennie Polasek Secretary Margaret Haisler Parliamentarian Herman Gaskamp Trustees Charles Borak, Darrin Broesche, Thomas Cannon, Grace Moore, Lucille Streetman, Tracie Wine Reporter Grace Moore After the installation of officers, the lodge held its Christmas party. A dinner of turkey, dressing and all the trimmings was enjoyed by all.

The meeting for the month of January was held on January 12, 1999.

The meeting was conducted by President Clint Luksa. Eighteen members and three guests were present. A memorial service for our departed members was led by Brother Henry Beseda. It was reported that treats were sent to the nursing home in Caldwell in December. Members voted to conduct a door prize drawing at each meeting. Volunteers were enlisted to provide refreshments at future meetings. Anna Evans, Libby Broesche and Faye Luksa volunteered to host the February 9 meeting.

Sewing Circle next meeting set for February 11 Ennis

It seems like a long time since I have written a letter to the Vestnik. We did not have a meeting in January.

This letter will be rather lengthy.

The Circle met on December 10, 1998. President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Our visitors were Esther and Bob Cunningham, Willie Skrivanek, Frank Laznovsky, Jerry Zmolek, George Zhanel, Jerry Koubek, Charles Kosarek, Jerry Kohn, Julius Podhrasky and Frank Zhanel. We had a short meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. A moment of silence was observe in memory of Joe Vik, husband of Sister Adell Vlk. Sister Bettie Houdek died recently. We express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved families.

Correction: In my December letter, I reported that Louis Slovak was a brother in-law of sisters Lillie Kosarek, Libbie Vrla and Georgia Morales. He was their uncle.

The minutes were read by Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky, and the treasurer's report was given by Lillie Kosarek.

Both reports were approved as read.

10/ViSTNIK—Wednesday, January 27, 1999 sent to sister Eleanor Pelzel, who is recuperating after having surgery and to sister Mary Sebestik, who had a light stoke and stayed in Baylor Hospital during the month of December. She is now in the Doctors' Healthcare Center in Dallas. We wish them a speedy recovery. A sympathy card was sent to sister Ade11 Vlk and family. Jerry Kohn, husband of sister Vickie Kohn, is recuperating after having minor surgery. We wish him a speedy recovery.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the December birthday celebrants.

Donations received: Memorials for Joe Vlk by Jerry Koubek, Vlasta Laznovsky, Georgia Tupy, Libbie Wisniewski, Vickie and Jerry Kohn, Dorothy Prachyl, Alene Skrivanek, Hattie Moucka, Lillie and Charles Kosarek and Liddie Pavelka. In addition, Sister Mary Sebestik gave a money donation, Sister Hattie Moucka gave a donation for having a quilt quilted, Sister Libbie Wisniewski donated Christmas napkins, and Sister Lucy Honza was the lucky winner of the quilt. Sister Dorothy Prachyl and husband visited their daughter and family in Michigan in December.

After a delicious meal, we exchanged gifts and enjoyed fellowship with one another. The tables were decorated very nicely. Decorations were brought by sisters Georgia Tupy, Libbie Wisniewski and Alice Roberts.

Our next meeting will be February 11, 1999. Next month, I will write about a pet. Anyone who has a good animal story, let me know.

May 1999 be a very good year for everyone.

Worth Friendship Club next meeting set for February 3 Fort

This letter is a reminder that the meeting of the Friendship Club, will be held Wednesday, February 3 beginning at 10:30 a.m. President Jo Prochaska reminds us that February hostesses will be Camille Bolcer, Billy King, Rose Romeo and Lillian Smith. Way back when, she was a New Year's Day baby and was probably the first baby born in Bardwell, Texas that year. You notice that I didn't give the year, but she is my older sister! A March 20, 1999 school reunion is being planned for St., John's School which was open from 1882 to 1961.

All students and their spouses of this parochial and public school are invited to attend this event to be held at the St. John The Baptist Catholic Church hall (outside of Schulenburg) on road FM 957. The reunion will be from 9 a.m. 4 p.m. with registration being from 9 10 a.m.

County Czech Heritage Society reports on Christmas social

Victoria

Victoria County Czech Heritage Society held its Christmas social and installation of officers on December 3, 1998 at the Holy Family Catholic Church meeting hall. The Christmas social began with a social at 6 p.m. followed by the installation of officers.

The installation was conducted by Anna Krpec, President of the State Czech Heritage Society of Texas.

The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society Officers for 1999 2000 are: President Marjorie Matula First Vice President (Membership) Bernice Kurtz Second Vice President (Programs) Thomas Kurtz Third Vice President (Notices) Mary Wagner Treasurer Ray Uherek Secretary (To be determined later) Reporter Reuben Petrusek Historian Geraldine Jurica Three-Year Director Ft. Joe Hybner Two-Year Directors Del Machac and outgoing President, Joe Pustka One-Year Director Joe Janak, Jr. Following the installation of officers, the members enjoyed a meal of roast beef and trimmings.

Effie Rosene, Chairman of the Board of the Czech Cultural Center in Houston, presented a program on the mission of the Czech Cultural Center and how it was conceived and organized their plans for the future. Effie,

in a trip to the Czech Republic, did an interview of Hermina Drobilicova and her daughters in the village of Hlohovec in south Moravia on Moravian Christmas traditions.

Other members of the Czech Cultural Center, James E. Ermis, Clarice Marik Simpson, and Kathy Hanzelka spoke briefly on other aspects of the center, including the Museum and Gift Center located in Northwest Mall in Houston.

Following the presentation by the Czech Cultural Center members, a special recognition of "Kentucky Colonel" was presented to Marjorie Matula in recognition of her contributions to the community and state. Margorie joins a list of distinguished leaders as President Lyndon B. Johnson, English Prime Minister Winston Churchill, America's first man in space, John Glenn, entertainers such as the late Bing Crosby and Red Skelton. The highest honor awarded by the state of Kentucky is the Kentucky Colonel.

The colonels are Kentucky's ambassadors of good will and fellowship around the world. Adolph Motal made the presentation on behalf of the "Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels" and enumerated the long list of accomplishments and areas of service that Marjorie has done and has been involved in.

The Christmas social was wrapped up with the singing of traditional Czech songs with the accompaniment of accordionist John Novak.

Language Class for beginners scheduled in Rosenberg Czech

Beginning Tuesday, March 2, 1999 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m, Czech language instruction for beginners will be held at the Czech Moravian Center located at 2220 4th Street in Rosenberg, Texas.

The instructor, originally from Prague, Czech Republic, will teach twelve lessons. Registration is from January 13 through February 13, 1999.

There is a fee of $60 per person.

In Memoriam In Memory of Otillie Jurchak Otillie Jurchak passed away January 16, 1999 at the SPJST Nursing Home in Needville. She was born on October 13, 1896 in Nelsonville.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 9 in the Chapel of Davis Funeral Home in Rosenberg.

Brother Larry Butcher of the Rosenberg Brethren Church and also Henry Beseda officiated the service.

Interment followed at Greenlawn Memorial ParL Sister Otillie was a member of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville.

Pallbearers were Ronny Jurchak, Larry Zajicek. Lyndon Sommer, Herman Barta, Lesley Sommer and Brian Lawrence.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jurchak, her parents, Ignac and Josephine Kamas Chernosky; a brother, Otto Chernosky; a sister, Mattie Streb; a daughter, Ioine Jurchak; a son, Darwin Jurchak and granddaughter, Beverly Sommer.

She is survived by her son, Sydney Jurchak and his wife, Georgie; daughter in-law, Noillie Jurchak; grandchildren, Ronny Jurchak and his wife, Glenda, Vicki Zajicek and her husband, Larry; great grandchildren LeeAnn Lawrence and her husband, Brian, Lesley Sommer and his wife, Heather; a brother, Ed Chernosky; and a stepbrother, Elmo Chernosky.

Resolution Committee, Winnifred Susan Willie Mae Kuykendall —SPJST-

the Crisp area and attended Telico schools. After finishing school, he worked on the family farm and as a plumber for several years. On April 18, 1933, he was married to Annie Dlabaj of the Creechville community.

After their marriage, they lived in Boyce before moving to Crisp. He was engaged in the plumbing business with his son in Trojacek Plumbing for 20 years. He was a member of RVOS Lodge 51 and SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis for almost 60 years.

He is survived by his wife, Annie, of Ennis; a son and his wife, Edwin and Frances Trojacek of Ennis; a daughter and her husband,m Georgia Ann and Leonard Wienken of Dallas; a brother, Wesley Trojacek, of Stockton, California; three sisters, Mary Kubacak, of Ennis, Stacie Trojacek, of Lancaster, and Adelle Cikanek, of Ennis; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He-was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley, Frank and Joe and two sisters, Alice Andrews and Louise Trojacek.

Charlie will be truly missed by his family, neighbors and especially missed by his friends that he made at the SPJST throughout his 60 years o being a member of Lodge 25.

May he rest in eternal peace and his memory remain with us forever.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden Number 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership,, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, FRANCES KEEL MACE of Lacy-Lakeview, who died Tuesday, December 22, 1998 at the age of 80 years.

Services were held Saturday, Expression December 26 at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jeff of Sympathy Wyers of Bosqueville Baptist Church officiating. Burial took place at Chapel On behalf of the officers and entire membership of Lodge 25, Ennis, Hill Memorial Cemetery.

of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden Number 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, FRANK PARMA of Waco, Texas, who died Sunday, January 10, 1999 at the age of 89 years.

A rosary was prayed at 6 p.m. on Monday, January 11th at WilkersonHatch-Bailey Funeral Chapel. Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 12, 1999 at the funeral home with Monsignor Mark Deering officiating. Burial took place at Rosemond Cemetery.

Brother Frank attended Waco schools. He married Libbie Chamrad on December 1935. They had 63 years together. Brother Frank was cabinet maker and marble setter.

Many homes in Waco feature the beautiful cabinets that he took pride in building. He spent many hours mak-

ing the bar area of Linden Hall a work of art. There was no job at our hall that he did not contribute to He served on the board of directors for 29 years and was chairman of the Building Committee. He always had time to garden and raise beautiful flowers, and Frank shared his flowers, vegetables and fruit that he grew with everyone. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and an SPJST Lodge 66 member since December 1935.

Survivors include his wife, Libbie Parma of Waco; one daughter, Barbara Stanislav and her husband, Robert of West; four grandchildren, Patricia Neslony and her husband, Paul; Steven Stanislav, Janice Roessler and her husband, Mark; and Donna Donnell and her husband, Kevin; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

We have been blessed to have such a good friend. May he rest in peace.

Dear Members, Greetings! Have you entered the 1999 Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest?

The deadline is January 31, 1999.

SPJST sponsors the contest each year for youth members to create an artistic design for the summer camp tee-shirts.

The 1999 theme is "A Proud Past—A Bright Future".

The grand prize winner receives a $100 Wal-Mart gift certificate and his or her design on this year's camp teeshirts. Runner-up prizes in four age groups are $75 Wal-Mart gift certificates. All participants receive a certificate and 20 merit points.

Active youth club members ages six to high school senior are encouraged to enter. Entries may be submitted on an official entry form, available from youth. leaders, or drawn on an 8 1/2 by 11" sheet of plain, white paper using a black pen or marker.

Judging is based on the design's overall appearance and appeal, creativity and originality, and ability to reproduce on a tee-shirt.

DYCs meet January 30 in Temple The district youth counselors and their assistants will meet this Saturday, January 30 at 10 a.m. at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. A catered lunch will be served at 12 noon.

Interested members are also invited.

We will plan 1999 youth activities and discuss programs for the future.

Lodge 29, Taylor youth club discusses Valentine skating social Dear Vestnik Readers, The January meeting of Lodge 29 was called to order by Vice President, Jennifer Johle. Kendra Zak, led the pledge. The register was read. There were 20 members and 11 adults present. One guest, Clayton Sankey of Taylor, was introduced. The minutes were read and approved. We got two thank you cards. One was from the rest home thanking us for coming for Christmas. And the second thank you was from our adult lodge.

Lacy Cervenka gave the Treasurer's report. This month's social was going to an Austin Ice Bats hockey game.

All the members that went had a blast.

Our Youth Leader Carol Tallas reported on a few things. We discussed eating pizza on February 21st before the District Two skating party and also about the Officers' Workshop and State Lock-In. She brought up LIT camp and was starting to see who was inter-

ested in going. Then after meeting,activities were making a Valentine's crafts and cleaning up.

Czech Heritage Society issues fall report (Continued from Last Issue) The Annual Czech Heritage Award was presented to Frank J. Parma (deceased) and his wife, Patricia Ahlhom Parma, State CHS Secretary of Richmond, for their dedicated efforts on behalf of the Czech Heritage Society. The Blaha-Hejl Memorial Award, in honor of a deceased CHS member, was presented to the family of Linhart M. Steffek, of Missouri City. The Blaha-Hejl Award recognized the first Czech Priest in Texas, the Reverend Joseph Chromcik who was sent by the Bishop of Olomouc, Moravia, following the appeal of the Catholics in Fayetteville for a Czech priest.

The genealogy liaison, Sallie Wendt, of Houston, reported that the 1999 Genealogy Meeting will be held in Hillsboro, and the 2000 Genealogy Meeting will be held in College Station. Sallie also brought in a large collection of Czech Genealogical information and books for all of the

Leroy Matocha (Continued from page 13.)

Accordion Band of West Point, Texas in 1947. In 1952, Lee Roy joined the Lee use Band of La Grange and continued performing with them until 1964. He then formed his own band, the Lee Roy Matocha Orchestra.

Lee Roy was born in Plum, Texas and married the former Doris Malota of Fayetteville on April 17, 1955. They have five children and eleven grandchildren.

The orchestra has performed from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to San Angelo, Harlingen, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Houston, and points in between these cities over the years.

Lee Roy has also been busy promoting 13 Polka Music Radio Shows per week over seven different radio stations in Central and South Texas over the past 39 years.

The Honorable Mayor Bernard Rychlik of Caldwell, Texas, presented Lee Roy Matocha with the key to the city in recognition of decades of fine musical performance of the orchestra.

Czech genealogy and entertainment on the Internet The Dallas Czech Club Historical Society will meet at 1:30 pm on February 7, 1999 at the Dallas Czech Club, 4930 Military Parkway, Dallas, Texas, 75227. Leo Baca will begin the presentation by showing how your home computer can be used to listen to Czech and English programs from radio stations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The ability to use this same technology to listen to Czech polka programs from various Texas/American radio stations will also be demonstrated. The second part of the demonstration will include visits to the homepages of various Czech genealogical societies. Links to other Czech genealogical and cultural resources will be demonstrated and discussed.
