Internet Project -Takes Flight Please Note: The 1999 SPJST Member Services Directory will be published in lieu of our regular Vestnik on February 3 1999.

Supreme Support Last week, the Vestnik offered an introduction to the Internet and its potential for SPJST growth and development. This week, we report that the Supreme Lodge, at the their meeting last week in Temple, voted to take such steps as necessary to establish an SPJST home page on the World Wide Web within the next few months. The site will provide SPJST with the opportunity to define the Society in terms of its strengths and in terms of what direction we want to see it grow.

The motion to proceed posthaste with the Internet project was made by Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska and seconded by Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir. It passed unanimously. The next step of the project will be the formation of a project development team that will be responsible for defining the content of the web site. Professional assistance may be solicited with the actual Web page construction.

The Supreme Lodge vote marks an important step in the SPJST's drive to embrace new technology as a means to improve customer service and member benefits. Groundwork for the Internet project was laid as early as November 1996 when a group of Home Office personnel, including Daryl Entrop, Kathy Fritz, Keith Gatewood, Barbara Rosenkranz and yours truly presented a program and a recommendation to embrace the new technology. As a result of their efforts and through the support of the Supreme Lodge, an SPJST presence on the World Wide Web will soon become a reality.

Number Sense Compliments to State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny for the detailed report which she submitted to the Supreme Lodge for their consideration when they met last week in Temple. A condensed version of her report appears on page 11 of this week's Vestnik. The report, as it was presented, was exemplary in that it offered a thorough review of departmental activities and expenses for the 1998 fiscal year.

The real upside to detailed reporting such as this is is that it leaves little to the imagination. As such, it provides an effective tool for monitoring and managing departmental activities and productivity. The report, in fact, sets the pace for a more detailed SPJST annual reporting process in 1999.

At their April 1998 meeting, the Supreme Lodge approved the recom-

mendation to proceed, in 1999, with a more detailed annual reporting process. The objective, as stated in recommendation, was to offer a more detailed analysis of previous year's performance, to illustrate business trends and to identify organization goals and objectives for the coming year and beyond.

Tentative plans are for the SPJST Annual Report issue to appear in the April 14 edition of the Vestnik.

Fun Stuff to Do

Social Icebreakers: This can , become an important part of your meeting. Icebreakers gently force people socialize with persons that they normally might not. It gives shy people an opportunity to meet others and children a great opportunity to talk with and mingle with older folks in a fun setting.

The Name Rhyme Game: Give participants a piece of paper and pencil. Ask them to introduce themselves to "X" number of people. When introducing themselves, they are to use their name in a rhyme. For instance: "My name is Dan, and I drive a van", or, "My name is Barb, I watch my carbs," or "My name is Brian, and I'm not lying" and so on. The participants are to write down only the descriptive word such as "van", "carbs" or "lying". Later before the meeting give members five or so minutes to rematch the word with the correct name.

Shirley McCrea of Lodge 177, had a great idea for SPJST Bingo halls. First beautify your bulletin board by adding paper ribbon, Spanish moss, dry flowers, etc. Then make a poster listing the donations your hall has made to the community and local charities and post it on your newly beautified bulletin board. What a great idea to help keep your community informed of local lodge contributions.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 18, Elgin expresses appreciation to members and friends for their loyal support Lodge 18, Elgin had its share of hard times, difficult decisions, dry mountains to climb, but the wonderful hard working members have over come those obstacles.

I know the city of Granger was called every time because Johnnie knew every song and even gave words of a song to him You could hear him call out the "Circleville Kids" — Andrew and Delores; the love birds — Frankie and Betty; the Circling Pigeons (Krouzek Holubery) Coupland — Agnes and Jack. He would call as many cities he could recognize Austin, Temple, Taylor, Sealy, Floresville, Hallettsville, Elgin, Smithville, Rosanky, Fayetteville, Caldwell and all his faithful followers.

Elizabeth Wagner of Lodge 4, Hallettsville Receives Girl Scouts' Highest Honor Elizabeth Wagner of Shiner was awarded the highest honor that a Girl Scout can achieve by receiving her Gold Award Pin. Terry Blevins, District Field Representative, of Victoria presented Elizabeth the pin on Saturday, November 14, 1998 at Werners' Restaurant. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal and fun reminiscing in various Girl Scout scrapbooks from over the past Elizabeth Wagner nine years.

Elizabeth made a special presentation to her parents by pinning replicas of her Gold Award on their lapels.

She is a member of Girl Scout Troop Number 534 of Shiner.

funds payed out which were refunded, the members are very proud to have a treasurer from Minnesota to do so much for the lodge. Agnes is retired from her job, but has a full time position with Lodge 18, Elgin.

Helen Ray, who took over after the death of her husband in the bar and meets trucks at all hours of the week, deserves a solid gold pin for her contributions to the lodge.

Since the passing of our brother Bill, Thomas (Sac) has traveled many a mile from Austin to the lodge to take care of the duties of the bar, repairs, groundskeeping. He gives more time to the lodge than he does to himself. Minnie needs a big hug for letting him share his time with us.

Arthur has spent many hours on reports and the well-kept grounds.

We hope he will be able to help us in the coming year.

To Irene and Artie, we appreciate their time to the house and booking.

Gladys, who peeps through the small glass window, takes the green and in return, you get a pale green ticket, the members thank you. Many thanks to Alice Kovar, who served on the card committee, to Marie for her time on the finance (membership) committee, to Agnes Eschberger, who was there to read and take minutes when the secretary was absent, to Walter Bartosh for working on the sign at the main entrance and to the Beckers for keeping up the kitchen.

Two members who need more than a thank you are Johnny and Irene Vrabel and children. They are 100 percent working members. The first Christmas party was organized by Irene and was a complete success.

There would not be a fish fry, blackeyed pea dish, cornbread, coffee or any food if they left us. They are super in whatever they do.

Thanks to everyone who worked hard on the by-laws (rules and regulations). Thank you, Alex for all your hard work.

A hearty applause to all the members who volunteered throughout the year for yard work, electrical, cleaning, working the bar, closing the hall at late hours and anything that helped the lodge have such a good year.

On the sad note, we will miss Bill and Alma very much. We hope Alma can join us soon. We are also saddened by the loss of a wonderful member, Alton Prinz. We will miss him in the bar and on the dance floor.

We extend our sympathy to his family, friends and Doris Wiesner.

Lodge 18 appreciates the officers and employees of the Supreme Lodge who gave us their time, information, printing services, door prizes and all the other goodies to make our meetings and parties a big success.

35, Elk reports on January meeting Lodge

Our January meeting was called to order by President Randy Pavelka.

Christopher Pavelka led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

All officers were present.

The minutes were read by Secretary Carla Pavelka and approved. Treasurer Cindy Pavelka gave her report, and we are making headway.

We had a cake walk, along with the New Year's Eve Dance, which helped out a lot. Many thanks to all who donated cakes and to those that won them and donated the cakes back.

Our visitor was Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director. He said the Supreme Lodge is always there to help us. District Three had the most insurance sales. He urged everyone to attend the meeting at Lodge 177 in Academy. He gave us information on the GTU rate with TU Electric.

Ruby Pavelka said she had gotten a $25 donation to the lodge from Mr. Joe Novak of Virginia Island, Virginia. He had read of our plight in the Vestnik.

Many, many thanks, Mr. Novak. That was very kind of you. Thanks to James "Dude" Mann for donating some roofing material to fix the roof when the weather gets right.

Our New Year's Eve Dance was a success. Thanks to the workers and to all who donated their time to clean up the hall on Saturday morning.

We are planning a January 31st Super Bowl party. The hall will open at 2 p.m. with TVs to watch the football game. The bar and kitchen will be open. No admission.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 14 at 3 p.m. Please attend and show your support.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, January 20, 1999

Lodge 54, West schedules fried/baked chicken and sausage dinner Another fund raiser will be held at Lone Star Hall on Sunday, February 21 with all proceeds going toward hall renovation. A delicious fried and baked chicken and sausage dinner will be held with serving beginning at 11 a.m. Help from all lodge members and Sokol members that are willing will be greatly appreciated.

Willing helpers are asked to report to Lone Star Hall at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 20 to make preparations. Members are requested to bring pastries for the dinner.

Cost of the meal will be $5 for large and to-go plates, $4 for small plates and $1.50 for tot's plates. This includes tea or coffee and dessert.

We at Lodge 54 have done very well on our previous fund raisers and are anticipating another success with this one. We are very anxious to be able to start our renovations as soon as possible. Many thanks to all who have participated in the past, and hopefully the weather will cooperate so that we can have another success.

At our annual meeting, we elected a new secretary, Helen Pavelka. All the other officers were retained.

We want to thank Jill Sijansky for all the years that she served as our secretary.

During 1998, our lodge participated in a number of food drives, funerals of our members, collecting eye glasses, giving monthly donations to worthy organizations, and I would say our highlight of the year would have to be our mortgage burning celebration.

Here we came to work jointly with our Sokol brothers and sisters in complete harmony. Now that the hall is paid for, Lodge 79 wants to wish Sokol Corpus Christi the very best in coming years.

Many members were recognized during the year with various awards.

In recapping 1998, I think it was a good year, with two exceptions. Our new membership fell drastically, and our lodge did not have a scholarship recipient. So I ask all our members to try and get new members to join; we have so much to offer!

I want to wish all good health in 1999 and let us all join hands to make this a banner year.

SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas welcomes a new member, Elizabeth Nicole Oberle, born November 20, 1998 at 3:25 p.m.

She weighed 5 pounds, 14 oz. and was 18 1/4 inches long. Nicole, at just a mere four weeks old attended her first Christma program on December 13, 1998 at Lodge 84. Believe it or not, Nicole played the Baby Jesus in the live manger scene. Pictured here, Nicole tells Santa that all she wants for Christmas is to sleep. Nicole's proud parents are David and Renee Oberle, along with big brother David, Jr. (4), grandparents, Ray and Carole Faraizl, as well as great grandmothers, Carolyn Nemec and Elle Mae Faraizl and great grandfather, Ed L. Faraizl.

Little Nicole is also the newest member which Sales Representative Emil Petr had the privilege of signing up into Lodge 84.

Born November 20, 1998, Elizabeth Nicole Oberle receives tender loving attention from Santa Claus, in anticipation of her first Christmas.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on lodge and member activities Here I am, still writing. Guess I,m not going to give up my job as your reporter after all Just keep giving me things to write about and I won't give it up.

There have been a lot of sick people since my last letter. First, Royal Warnasch has beenin the hospital. He has a had a slight heart attack and has had surgery on his legs (like angioplasty on the heart) - they put new arteries in the legs to replace clogged arteries. He is home now and I hope doing fine. Lillie Hoepfl has had some tests run and is home now.

Alice Motal has had some stomach problems, and she is having tests to see what is wrong.. Margaret Spahr has been ill ever since she went to Colorado before Christmas. The altitude in Colorado is just too high for her, and the air too thin, I think. She is better now, however. Ellen Miculka has had carpal tunnel surgery on her hand and is doing fine. Mike Trefell was ill, and Kathy didn't get to make the monthly lodge meeting. Also, Lillie Spies and A.V. Rosnovsky are under the weather, and " Bill McCaskill is in the hospital. Maybe he will be home by the time you read

this - hope so. Sydney Jurchak's mother passed away at the SPJST nursing home in Needville, and the funeral was on January 9th.in Rosenberg. She was 102 years old.

Our prayers are with you and your family, Sydney.

Helen and King Hegwood have a new grandchild, Abbigail Alise, 7 pound 4 oz. girl born on December 17th to Vernon and Chrissy Hegwood.

That makes four granddaughters and two grandsons - lots of babysitting,Helen.

The Youth Club had election of officers for 1999. They are: President—Christina Joseph; Vice President—Kimberly Joseph; Bender; Secretary—Kristen Treasurer—Natalie Zalesky; Reporter—Stephanie Boyce; and Sergeant-at-Arms—Angela Mooney.

Congratulations to all you fine young people. Barbara Gonzales is to be congratulated on the fine job she does with our youth.

Why not sign up for the Driver's Education class. You could save a little on your insurance, and it's really not that difficult. Talk to Larry Pflughaupt. Also, Larry mentioned that the Tarok games need players.

They tell me it's lots of fun, so why not join them on Monday nights except for lodge meeting night.

Our Choral Club planned to sing at the Needville Nursing Home before Christmas, but due to the really bad weather they had to cancel. They plan to go in February, I believe.

Our dance class meets every Saturday morning. Come on out and learn to dance some of the Czech dances with them.

Remember, February 14th is our 34th Lodge Anniversary date. Dinner, baked chicken with all the trimmings will be $4.50 per plate beginning at 11:00 a.m. All you ladies bring your wonderful pastries to the lodge for our Birthday Club pastry booth. The youth will make their delicious homemade ice cream and will have a silent auction. The Choral Group will sing.

There will be a dance - The Dance Hall Boys - from 3 to 7 p.m.

Admission to the dance is $3.00.

I'm sure you have noticed our parking lot has been retopped. It really looks nice. They have even added two greatly needed handicap spaces.

The Board is to be congratulated.

Guenter Merkle is Board Chairman again this year. They had election of officers, and they are: Chairman—Guenter Merkle, Vice Chairman—J. Broz, Jr., Secretary— Jeanette Bender.

By the way - if you know of a high school senior in Lodge 88 who needs a college scholarship, tell them to contact the Lodge 88 office at (713)8695767 for details. The deadline has been extended to February 28th.

Our dance on the 23rd will be the Vrazels Polka Bank. Hosts will be Agnes and Tom Haney, with helpers Cleburn and Georgia Lincke. The dance on the 31st will be Manny Green - a Tea Dance - Big Band Dress Code - 5 - 9 p.m. Hosts for this dance will be Joline Cooke and Al Hartman. Helpers will be Estelle Hillman, Earline Hoffman and Florien Demny.

88, Houston Birthday Club reports on January meeting Lodge

Our meeting was called to order by President Kathy Trefell. She read us an article which inspired us to lead a better life by being better people.

Secretary Ellen Miculka read the minutes of the December meeting. They were approved as read. She called the roll and we had 28 members present. She read notes from Josephine and Leander Pflughaupt, thanking the birthday club for having them at our Christmas dinner. She also read a note from Flo Orsag thanking the club for all the cards, phone calls and especially the prayers during her recent illness. Ellen also received a card from Tim Kostom thanking the club for the

cards to his wife Rosa Lee Kostom.

Treasurer Ellen Miculka read her yearly treasurer,s report. Then the new Treasurer, Mary Quider took over.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut gave her report. Since our last meeting she sent birthday cards to Marie Pokluda, Margaret Bohac and Dona Clooney. She sent get well cards to Ellen Miculka, Alice Motal, Adella Kite and Flo Orsag. She had phone calls from Josephine Pumilia and Delores Condon, thanking the club for cards sent to them. Mary also reported the number of Acts of Kindness reported by the birthday sisters for our club in 1998 is 1,068. The reported number of hours the birthday sisters worked without compensation for our club in 1998 is 2,174 hours. Ladies if you report to Mary everything you do —like bake a cake for a deceased family member or a covered dish or drive someone to the doctor's office or anything you do for someone else—tell Mary so she can report it.

A motion was made and seconded that we continue having lunch catered on the first Wednesday of the month.

On the second Wednesday, the Hostesses will decide if we will have a covered dish luncheon or if they will prepare the lunch. The hostesses are to let the president know a month in advance. It was decided that we

After prayer by Helen Hegwood, we had a wonderful covered dish luncheon.

P S. As you may know by now, I had

a light stroke in December, and the doctor advised me to give up my responsibilities. I have decided to try writing the letter for a while, unless it gets to be too much for me. With your help, I can make it.

Lodge 133, San Antonio reports on December meeting Lodge 133 held a Christmas luncheon on Sunday, December 20th at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center located at 1630 Goliad road in San Antonio. Members enjoyed a delicious Christmas luncheon. A special thanks to our members for providing the side dishes and desserts. There were 36 members and eight guests in attendance.

President Popp opened the floor to nominations for officers. There were no nominations from the floor. A motion was made by Grace Rohan and seconded by Alvin Schimcek that the existing officers be reelected. The motion was unanimously approved.

SPJST Lodge 196 had its Christmas party on December 20, 1998. We all had a good time with Santa, but I think that he was a bigger hit with the kids.

We all enjoyed the wonderful barbecue and the great food that everyone brought.

The company around us was very warming, and you could tell that everyone was in the holiday spirit. We all hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone on January 17, 1999 at our monthly meeting. The meeting will be at 2 p.m., and you should bring your favorite covered dish.

Oh, last, but not least, on January 30, 1999, Country Knights will be playing at the lodge. It will be the same time and the same admission.

A March 20, 1999 school reunion is being planned for St., John's School which was open from 1882 to 1961.

All students and their spouses of this parochial and public school are invited to attend this event to be held at the St. John The Baptist Catholic Church hall (outside of Schulenburg) on road FM 957. The reunion will be from 9 a.m. 4 p.m. with registration being from 9 10 a.m.

A catered barbecue lunch will be served at noon. Registration will be $6 per person which will cover the meal and reunion costs. Nancy Pieper as well as Forrest and DeLaine Dittrich are collecting history on the school; they would like to hear from local historians and former students about their memories, names of classmates, activities, etc.

They have received names of the Sisters of Divine Providence and Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament who taught them from 1882 to 1954. 1999 TCHCC calendar provides nostalgic look at Czech communities The 1999 Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center calendars are a book of memories for Texans interested in rural and small town history. Featured in the calendar are 45 images from the scrapbooks, newspapers and lives of the Texas Czechs, from the late 19th century through the 1940s. A statewide project, the calendar's images roam from Rowena to West to Hallettsville to Granger. From polka bands to the cotton harvest, the story of the Texas Czechs unfolds in the pages of the calendar. Also included in the calendar are the dates for most of the state's Czech festivals and events as well as Czech holidays customs, Czech proverbs and phrases, radio polka programs and the months, days and holidays in Czech and English.

Leo Baca will begin the presentation by showing how your home computer can be used to listen to Czech and English programs from radio stations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The ability to use this same technology to listen to Czech polka programs from various Texas/American radio stations will also be demonstrated. The second part of the demonstration will include visits to the homepages of various Czech genealogical societies. Links to other Czech genealogical and cultural resources will be demonstrated and discussed.

IMA B. LERO, who passed away on December 9, 1998 in Baytown after a brief illness.

Mrs. Lero was a resident of the Heights for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Lero in 1967. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church for over 50 years. Survivors are a son, Fred and wife, Patricia, of Houston; daughters, Jo Ann Kaminski of Houston, Eva Podroza and husband, Raymond, of Houston, Beverly Bielamowicz and husband, Daniel, of Baytown; 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

The vigil was at 7 p.m., Friday, December 11, 1998 at Pat Foley Funeral Home. Services were on December 12, 1998 at All Saints Thanks! Nothing gets the word out like the Vestnik!

Czech Heritage Society issues fall report The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society held its 14th Annual Czech Heritage Festival on Sunday,

MINNIE L. RUZICKA, age 88, a homemaker, who died Tuesday, December 22, 1998 in San Antonio.

The funeral was held at 1 p.m. at Shannon North Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral chapel.

Mrs. Ruzicka was born April 28, 1910 in Buckholts. She was a Fort Worth resident until she recently moved to San Antonio to live with her daughter. Mrs. Ruzicka was a lifetime member of SPJST Lodge 92. She was active for many years in the Ladies' Circle of Lodge 92. She was the beloved Mamaw to her grandchildren for her kolaches and homemade pickles. She was loved by everyone for her cooking prowess. She had the greenest of thumbs when it came to flowers and gardening.

Mrs. Ruzicka was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1981.

Survivors include a son, Calvin Ruzicka and his wife, Raenell, of Arlington; a daughter, Gladys Burkhalter and her husband, Lon, of San Antonio; a sister Ella Praslica of Keller; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

May she rest in peace.

Resolution Committee Rose Jaworski Victoria Murphy Mona Lee Hattendorf —SPJSTOctober 25th,1998 at the Victoria Community Center. The festival is held annually to coincide with Czech Heritage Month in Texas. The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society donated $1,000 of the proceeds from the 1998 festival for the relief of flood victims of our area that suffered the effects of the October 1998 floods. We want to thank all of those who came to join us in making the 1998 festival a successful one.

Services were at 10 a.m. Friday, January 8, 1999 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple with the Reverend Rodney Kruse and the Reverend Luther Dillard officiating.

Burial was in Eastlawn Cemetery in Brownwood.

Mr. Stuteville was born in Merkel to George M. and Mary Jane Hammond Stuteville. He married Emily Pavlica Mikeska on November 28, 1970 in Temple.

He was a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton, the husband of Lodge 47's Czech reporter, Emily Stuteville and a Baptist.

Survivors are his wife, Emily M. Stuteville of Rogers; three stepsons, Fain Pitts of Augusta, Georgia, Jackie Pitts of Sacramento, California, and Dean Mikeska of Rogers; and two stepdaughters, Sandra Vrba of Richmond and Linda Mikeska of Houston.

Family visitation was from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Scott and White Hospice, 2401 South 31st Street, Temple, 76508.

Well, this new year is rolling right along. Speaking of rolling, the District Two annual roller skating party is right around the corner. This activity, which is always very well attended, will be held on Sunday, February 2lat Skate Haven in Temple. The time will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Due to scheduling and other circumstances beyond our control, ice skating is not possible this year.

We want to invite all SPJST members to join us. You do not have to be an active member. Come join us and see what fun we have. Each member may bring a guest. Door prizes will be given.

Get Involved in National Youth Service Day National Youth Service Day is April 16-17, 1999. My goal is to get all SPJST Youth Clubs across the state involved in this wonderful day of service. The day kicks off the week-long celebration of National Volunteer Week. I encourage all youth clubs to take on a community service or volunteer project for National Youth Service Day. Save Those Can Tabs The Ronald McDonald House in Temple collects tabs from canned beverages. The tabs are then sold to a buyer. If you would like to get involved in this project, save your can tabs and send them to the Home Office. I will take these to the Ronald McDonald House on March 1. So hey, youth clubs and members, start collecting today.

Networking I received a neat idea from District Seven Director Bob Bayer last month.

The Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club created a Christmas Party Puzzle Book that they distributed to the young people at the event.

According to Director Bayer, the young people thoroughly enjoyed working on the games and puzzles.

Dear Readers, We visited the nursing home in West and gave each of the residents an angel, that we made at the lodge, and some candy. We had to make 140 of these angels. We also visited with the residents at their Christmas party.

Santa also came and everyone got gifts.

The residents always enjoy parties.

Lodge 9, Snook gives generously to charities Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 9 had their meeting on December 6. We elected new officers for the next year and decorated for the Christmas program.

December charities were to recycle phone books, collect toys for MASH, collect soup labels and collect money for City Mission. Our January charities are to give monetary donations to American Heart Association and Snook PTO and to collect Christmas cards.

We discussed the State Lock-in coming up in January.

Our next youth club meeting will be on January 10, 1999. We will all meet at Dairy Queen, then go to the hall for the meeting. I can't wait for my ice cream treat.

city qualifying meet. We had 13 members and 4 guests. Everyone had fun playing games, eating hot dogs and exchanging secret Santa gifts. Hope eveyone had fun.

The adult lodge invited the youth club to attend their Chistmas party on December 13th. They served brisket, sausage, and other food for lunch.

After they held their meeting we got to play Bunco. I even had the chance to get to the first table and ring the bell a few times.

Our next meeting will be in January.

New officers were announced. The members voted on having a Valentine's party. The motion was seconded. The party will be on February 14th. We also discussed the Youth club officers' workshop and lock-in. Members will be phoned on details. Everyone in the youth club is looking forward to fun at the lock-in.

After the meeting was adjourned, we made our snowflakes and had snacks.

Lodge 177, Academy reports on January meeting The January 10, 1998 meeting of Lodge 177 Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Kristen Bartek. Jennifer Clear led the Pledge of Allegiance. The register was read.

There were 15 members and three adults present.

The minutes were read and approved. We discussed the State Lock-in and the youth club officers' workshop that will be happening on January 16. We discussed the change of our next meeting to the third Sunday in February, the 21st, at 4 p.m. This will coincide with the District Two skating party. After the meeting, we will then go to Skate Haven.

The youth enjoyed having cookies, pretzels and popcorn served by the adults. The meeting was adjourned at 2:40.

The next youth meeting will be on February 21, at 4 p.m. at Lodge 177.

State Czech Heritage Society Meeting On November 14, 1998 the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society hosted the State Czech Heritage Society Fall Meeting at the Sons of Hermann Hall in DaCosta. The guest speaker was Henry Wolff, Jr., journalist and author, who spoke on "Early Czechs to the Area" and their impact. Henry referred to a number of his columns from the Victoria Advocate that had highlighted the early Czechs in the Victoria area and Texas. Local member, Elizabeth Stockbauer, prepared a display of information on her grandfather, who founded the town of DaCosta.

The Czechoslovak Foreign Institute announces the summer study program for 1999. The date of departure from the U. S. is June 30, and the date is July 25.
