The 1998 Membership Drive will continue through December 31. It provides us with an excellent opportunity to examine our changing needs and to help our volunteer sales force spread the word about SPJST insurance. At the same time, we can communicate the news of what our local lodges are doing to improve life in our communities.

Through these kinds of discussions, we can help attract new members to our fraternal order. Your active participation can help to make this year's membership drive a success. As an added incentive, members who recommend at least two new members in 1998 will have the opportunity to earn a variety of SPJST promotional items.

Lodge 4, Halletsville Christmas party set for December 13

SPJST Lodge No. 1 and Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce will have their combined Christmas party on Sunday, December 13, 1998 at 5 p.m. at the SPJST Hall in Fayetteville for the SPJST members and guests and all who participated in the annual Lickskillet Celebration.

Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish (vegetable or dessert). The meat and refreshments will be furnished.

Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, November 8, 1998 at the youth center with recognition of our 1997 Lodge Incentive Program members and monthly meeting. At 12:30, a delicious fried chicken dinner was served with members bringing the desserts. The 1997 members present were: Jennifer Lynn Hessler, Tracie Jewel Smolik and Tina Beth Neubauer. Unable to attend were: Kasi Elaine Bethky, Mary Ann Schroeder, Leroy Paul Schroeder and Chad Michael Mikush. Many thanks to our lodge sales representatives, Mary Matula and Annie Vahalik.

Following the meal, President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order.

Elizabeth Vahalik and Christopher Vanek presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Czechs. Author Sean Gallup has written extensive introductions on Texas Czech life that accompany the book's 109 color photographs. With a detailed map of settlements and notes on language, population, names and other elements of Czech culture, Gallup's book is a substantial reference as well as a colorful tour through Czech Texas. Of special interest is the book's concluding section, "Into the Old Country. - Gallup began working as a photojournalist in Prague after finishing his studies, and he was able to accompany some of the Texas Czechs as they traveled through the newly opened borders of Czechoslovakia to search for their family roots.

Dear Vestnik Readers, It's been a long time since I've written so I figured I'd write and let everyone know how I am doing.

Georgia weather is much different than Texas weather. During the summer, it is was very humid, and now it is cool in the mornings and gets warmer through the day.

I've been very busy lately. We've spent a lot of time out in the field learning and training. Time flies by when I am out there, though. Right now, we are cleaning our Bradleys (M2A2 ODS—Operation Desert Storm) inside and out. They are going to be on display at our Battalion Ball which is on November 20, 1998.

I guess I'll go home and find a job until my truck is paid off, then I'll go to college. I was accepted to ACC (Austin Community College).

I was supposed to go to Jordan from November 1, 1998 through November 14, 1998, but at the last minute, the trip was cancelled. I was very disappointed because I wanted to see what it was like there. Enough about the Army.

I get Christmas leave from December 18, 1998 through January 3, 1998. I am looking forward to

Another Step Closer for the TCHCC Members of Lodge 4 recently presented a $100 check to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center to be applied toward their building fund.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported on the monthly bingo for the residents of Steven's Convalescent Center. Assisting were: Evelyn Holy, Lillie Balusek, Jo Ann Matula, Evelyn Sklar, Elsie Mascheck and Denise Drozd. A get well card was sent to Annette Novak.

Youth Leader Shirley Kalmus reported on the youth activities. They gave $20 for bingo prizes for Steven's Convalescent Center. They also saluted Czech Heritage Week by having a picture in the paper and a display at the library.

Our local lodge Fraternalist of the Year nominee was announced by the committee, and her accomplishments read. Congratulations to Elsie Mascheck on deserving this honor.

Since Veteran's Day was a few days away, veterans present were recognized: Albert Smotek, Frances Urban, Bennie Orsak, Wylie E. Jansky, Alfonse Svetlik, Joe Balusek, Adolf Motal and Frank Matula.

Election of officers was held with all present officers bing reelected.

District Six FAC Helen Zabransky reported on the District FAC meeting held in Temple on October 16th. It was announced by District Six Secretary Annie Vahalik that the Spring Meeting will be held on March 14th in Moravia hosted by the Moravia lodge.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The annual lodge Christmas party is set for the second Sunday in December—the 13th starting at 3 p.m.

The memorial service is first with the youth club members or family members lighting a candle for each member deceased since last year. The youth program follows, and Santa Claus will be making a visit whether it's snowing or not. The supper will be about 5 p.m. after fellowship between the program, refreshments and eating time. The turkeys have been donated by members and will be prepared on Saturday.

Help is always appreciated, and on Sunday, this is also true.

Please bring side dishes for the supper such as vegetables, salad or desserts to go with the turkeys, sausage, dressing, gravy and cranberry sauce being prepared.

All members are invited to participate as much as possible. If you have little ones present, please bring a gift for them so they don't feel left out when others are opening their gifts and playing with toys. Come to see your friends and visit with them during this, the holiest season when Jesus Christ was born as our Saviour. See you all on the 13th of December.

The decorating of the hall and setting up tables will be on Friday, December 11th and if needed, decorating will be finished on Saturday, the 12th. The turkeys and dressing will be prepared on Saturday, the 12th, at 8 a.m. If you can make yourself useful, please do so. Make it much easier on the few that usually show up to work.

We don't have a dance scheduled on Saturday, the 12th, so things can be readied for the annual party. Also, on the 19th, there will not be a dance because a private party has rented the hall. On the 26th, we did not schedule a dance because Christmas is the day before.

Spread Good Cheer This Holiday Season!

Lodge 49, Rowena Hosts Annual Tarok Tournament On October 24, 1998, SPJST Lodge No. 49, Rowena, hosted their annual Tarok Tournament. Play was according to the Rowena Taroky rules. Boy did we have fun, fun, fun.

If you don't think so, just ask Joella Kubala and Elizabeth Kidwell of Ft. Worth.

Emily Havlak (she's so cute), won high round score in both rounds three and four. She also took third place over all. The listing of high round scores follow: Round One - Gregg Havlak; Round Two - Monica Havlak; Round Three - Emily Havlak; Round Four - Angela Havlak; and Round Five - Joe Havlak.

The top four winners for the day were: First Place - Angela Havlak; Second Place - Bruce Havlak; Third Place - Emily Havlak; and Fourth Place - Monica Havlak.

I would like to thank Fred Havlak for his patience and understanding and doing his best to help me understand the game better and have a good time learning. A good size crowd enjoyed the Czech day celebration following the tournament. Dance music and entertainment was provided by the Havlak - Batla Polka band, with delicious food and plenty of pivo to go around.

Mr. Joe Havlak, band leader and head Tarok player of the Havlak family, is an all-round talented sort of guy, and I'm sure he's proud of his large and gregarious family. It's always a joy to go out to Rowena and visit with the friendly people out in west Texas.

When I left in the evening, the Havlak family was still playing Taroks - except for Joe and Angela, who were playing in the band.

Thanks to all for a taroky day. That Zeeste (playing with the XX) and Zebrak (no tricks) makes for a fun round.

Next year, ya'll get out on there and enjoy the company of these friendly, fun Tarok players.

81, Needville Christmas party set for December 20 Lodge

With our October fund raiser over, Lodge 81 settled down to their regular schedule for the November monthly meeting. As usual, members and guests started arriving around 11 a.m.

As our three turkey bakers and dressing maker came walking through the door, everyone knew that the turkeys were in the roasters—the aroma was there. Thanks to Darlene Blinka, Rose Stavinoha, and Benita Walzel for preparing the turkeys and to Winnie Susan for making the dressing. Thanks also to the above four families for donating their food that they prepared.

At first, we thought there was going to be a lot of turkey left over, but when noon time rolled around, there were 53 members and guests present. Guests included Harvey Kettler, Tammy and Mike Moore, Rosemary Pieper and Freda Miller. Harvey is the husband of Joan Teyke Kettler, and also the son-inlaw of the Harry Teykes. The Moores are the daughter and son-in-law of the Eddie Piepers. Also, Rosemary is the Piepers' daughter. Freda Miller is the wife of member, Bill Miller. Lodge 81 was delighted to have each of you and invites you to come back again.

At twelve noon, the meal was ready to be served. President Macha led us in grace before the meal. Everyone sat down to enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving feast. Thanks to everyone who brought all of the delicious side dishes. There was a great variety to choose from. Our Christmas menu will consist of ham and sausage.

Make plans to attend.

President Macha called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. Benita Walzel led us in saying the Pledge of Allegiance. It is good to report that all officers were present at the meeting. Willie Mae Kuykendall, our Secretary, Benita Walzel, Treasurer and Special Fund Chairman, Gilbert Walzel all gave their

reports which met with everyone's approval.

The death of Leah Foss of Victoria, Texas was reported. Leah passed away on September 6, 1998 and was 103 years old. We are sorry that we are late in reporting this death. Our sympathy is extended to the family of Leah Foss.

A moment of silence was observed for Leah and also for Laura Ann Abschneider's mother who passed away earlier in the month.

New names added to our sick list are: Angeline Bezecny and Jeanette Rosenbaum both of Rosenberg. Mrs. Bezecny was in Polly Ryan Hospital, and then was transferred to the skilled nursing center of Polly Ryan. Jeanette Rosenbaum was in St. Luke's Hospital in Houston where she had surgery, but is now back at home. Vlasta Stransky was released from the hospital after her accident. Others who remain on the list are Jerry Blinka, Ernie Pollock, Bill Miller and Woodrow Bacica. Freda Miller reported that her husband was a little improved, but still weak.

Woodrow Bacica is at home now. Get well wishes are sent to all of the above and to anyone else who is ill.

One more note about our fund raiser — Benital Walzel reported that we cleared around $2,500. That was wonderful! Their report made all of us very happy. Just one more big THANK YOU for everyone's support, help and donations.

In the correspondence department, Willie Mae Kuykendall read a letter from the President of the Supreme Lodge, Howard. B. Leshikar. The Supreme Lodge Board voted to pursue the idea of passing a constitutional amendment for the 1999 November ballot so that our ad valorem taxes on our lodge buildings may be eliminated.

The Board feels this is an excellent idea. The Texas Fraternal Congress in October voted to support this proposal.

Blank petition sheets have been sent to us, and now we need all members and everyone else to sign their names on these sheets. If you are interested in signing your name, please contact one of our officers. A little later in my report, you will find the names of our officers as we had our election this particular Sunday.

Also, everyone is reminded to bring their fraternal worksheet services to the December meeting. This pertains to helping and doing charitable work without getting paid for it.

Jonathon Tydlacka, one of our recent scholarship winners, was present at the meeting with his family.

Jonathon, who is majoring in Civil Engineering, is attending A & M. He reports all of his studies are going along well, and he thanked the lodge graciously again for the scholarship he received. Come see us again, Jonathon.

Delores Macha will lend a hand in decorating the hall and Christmas tree. It was decided to give 10 money prizes instead of the usual four - just because it is Christmas. Also, if there is anyone who plays a musical instrument, please bring it. We all can sing Christmas carols while waiting for Santa to come.

Who knows, if someone brings an accordion, we could have some good polkas and waltzes played. Dorothy Kuban will send Christmas cards to the shut-ins.

Every year, our lodge has donated apples and oranges to the SPJST Rest Home. It was suggested that cans of fruit such as fruit cocktail, peaches or pears be donated instead. The lodge has decided to go ahead and donate fruit cocktail equal to the amount spent on the apples and oranges. President Macha will take care of doing this.

Some time ago, our SPJST Lodge combined with both the K.J.Z.T. and Catholic Daughters of the St. Michael's Catholic Church in donating money towards the purchase of smoke and fire alarms to be given away to the needy of our area. Our lodge received seven alarms. Presently, we are looking for homes in which to put these alarms.

Thanks to Joan and Harvey Kettler for donating approximately 1100 pennies to the scholarship fund. If you have any extra pennies lying around, bring them to the next meeting. We will take care of getting them to the proper people in Temple.

Our hope is that everyone took time to count their many blessings this Thanksgiving. First, came the drought, and then later came all the rain; the situation was not the best this year.

Farmers had a difficult time. With the help of the Lord and our faith, things seem to have all worked out one way or another.. If we keep in mind the destruction that Hurricane Mitch did to our neighbors in the Honduras and some of the other countries, then we realize how much we really do have to be thankful for.

Lodge 84, Dallas members invited to Christmas party this Sunday, December 13 Dear Members, Brother Salac led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Sister Salac reading the minutes of the last meeting and correspondence from the Brady Center, Kroger, Tom Thumb, Coker Heating and Air Conditioning, Masarykovy University in Brno, SPJST Supreme Lodge, Meribeth Novak for the Czech Club and a "thank you for your kindness" from the Oldrich Horak family and the Charlie Steglik family.

Sister Salac reported on donations and remembrances for the Living Memorial. She also gave the special committee report.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the youth leaders will meet tomorrow to plan future activities as well as plan the Christmas program for December 13.

The Dallas and Ennis Fraternal Council will hold its Christmas party December 7 at the Czech Club. SPJST members who plan to attend should bring desserts.

All who were present voted Brother Sid Pokladnik as our local lodge's state Fraternalist of the Year nominee.

Our meeting on December 21 at 7:30 p.m. could be a bigger occasion if more members showed up—are you making an effort to make this happen?

District Three Director Johnnie Krizan paid us an unexpected visit last Monday. We ended our meeting with his informative words of the many ways a person can become a member or add to his insurance to secure protection. We thank him for being a part of our evening.

If you plan a big night out on New Year's Eve, then Lodge 84 is the place to be. Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six will furnish the music. Free favors will be available at the door and at midnight, enjoy free black-eyed peas from our kitchen.

Don't forget the Christmas party on December 13. Happy hour will be from 5 to 6 p.m.—free keg beer and drinks from the bar for members.

Dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m.

Lodge 88, Houston expresses appreciation to all participants for a successful Czech Day It is with great pride and gratitude, that I say THANK YOU to all the workers, cooks, entertainers and anyone who participated in making Czech Day such a tremendous success that it was. Also, our thanks to you who came and spent the day with us.

We tried a new menu for the day, and we received nothing but good comments. Another new item for the day was the kolache cookoff which proved to be very successful and also provided for kolache to be sold at the cake booth. First place winner was Dorothy Fabrygel; second place was Agnes Gerlich and third place went to Helen Kubicek. Thanks, ladies, for supplying the kolache.

Congratulationsto Gary and Myriam Zalesky who were crowned as winners in the Mr. and Mrs. Czech Day competition. Their coronation took place in conjunction with recent Czech Day festivities at Lodge 88, Houston.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle posts notice of coming events The Ladies Circle of SPJST Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth met for their regular meeting at the Golden Corral Restaurant in North Richland Hills for a luncheon

and fellowship on Tuesday, November 10 with about 60 members and guests present. It was a jovial crowd that enjoyed the fall weather and outing that was followed by games at the lodge hall.

Secretary Martha Durham was out of town vacationing with her husband — a trip that took them 3,200 miles to as far as Raleigh, North Carolina, to visit Martha's cousin, Lillian Matusevich Cooper and her husband, Ben. No minutes or official business was transacted other than to make a few announcements.

The Nominating Committee, composed of Jo Prochaska, Ann Schneider and Clara Marchioni, presented their recommended slate of officers for 1998 and 1999 — a two-year term. Happy Birthday Wishes Gee, Martha Durham didn't know that a woman would complain that her age was misquoted — even as to being older at that! But, in her last report, the age of our octogenarians should have been 88 years rather than 84!

Congratulations are in order for Anna Lesikar, Flora Koci, Lillie McMillen and Louise Oujesky who attained the 88 year status in 1998. Also, we failed to mention that member Joe Gregory is 89 and Mac McMillen is 90 and Justine Chaloupka is 89. My you have many, many more years of excellent health and happiness.

Children's Christmas Festivities December 13 On Sunday, December 13th, we will have our annual Children's Christmas festivities, including a visit by Santa, our talent show, candle lighting ceremony and nativity pageant conducted by the Lodge 92 Youth Club. The part will start at 5 p.m.. Children on the program are asked to arrive between 4 and 5 p.m. to register for their part on the program.

Everyone is welcome, so bring your whole family — and friends. The lodge furnishes the punch and coffee; but bring a dozen of your favorite cookies to share. Santa arrives with his bundle of gifts and a fruit and nut bag will be given to everyone by the lodge. (And, don't forget to bring a

gift to put under the tree for your little ones. It is suggested that only one gift per child be given so that Santa won't get too tired before his big trip on December 25th. Gifts for adults will be handed out by Santa's elves while Santa is handing out gifts for the children.) It is a fun time for all and we'll be expecting you!

New Year's Eve Dance On Thursday, December 31, New Year's Eve will be celebrated with the Stardust Ballroom Dance, with the big band sound of Charlie Patterson's Orchestra. Tickets are being sold at this time and are going fast. Call Joyce Tesar at 624-1361 for more information.

A cornbread and black-eyed pea bowl at midnight is included. Dress code enforced.

It is so gratifying that so many of the younger generations have responded to our call for the additional shrubbery — a beautiful tribute to our mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles who originally started the building of our lodge hall and the landscaping. Many, many thanks to all. The planting has not started and soon the results will be seen!

92, Fort Worth readies for December 13 Christmas party and youth program Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: I hope all of you did have a nice Thanksgiving Day and plenty of good food.

So today is December 1, 1998, and soon it will be days of planning for the Christmas season. So as not be late, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a good healthy Happy New Year.

In the Vestnik, there will be lots of lodges having new officers installed and all kinds of activities in December.

Our lodge will be having our annual Christmas party for the children with Santa Claus giving out gifts. This will be held December 13 starting about 5 p.m. There will be a program put on by the youth club and also the members will be asked to sing Christmas songs. Santa will give out gifts and fruit and candy that the lodge will furnish. Here, on the morning of December 13, several members will be helping to set up tables to help package the bags. So, some of you who like to help out, be at the hall about 8 a.m. Kenneth and Mary Ann Krivanek will be serving a good breakfast.

Lodge 107, Floresville invites members to attend Christmas party Sunday, December 13 Lodge 107 members met on November 8, 1998 at 3 p.m. All officers were present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all in attendance.

On the sick list was Joe Pavliska.

There were two new members and one reinstated.

Eye glasses are still being collected; please bring any old, unused eye glasses to the meeting.

The flood relief effort has collected and donated over 1000 pounds of goods to the Stockdale area.

The hall repairs were discussed.

Estimates will be acquired before proceeding with any repairs.

Dear Members and Friends: November 14th will be an evening to remember for quite some time. This was the 59th wedding anniversary of Brother and Sister Ed and Evelyn Scaff.

On the morning of the celebration, the couple's daughters and sons came to decorate the hall. I must say, the decorating was professionally done.

The front of the stage was decorated with small Christmas lights and when you came in, the inside just did not look like the regular hall.

The family really did a fine job on the tables and the ceiling. Every table had gold stars and flowers and the ceiling twinkled with many stars.

As we walked in, we were greeted

by Ed and Evelyn, who were both very well dressed. The tables were set with silverware and nice plates and the caterer for this event was Vance Godby. There were four lines to serve guests so it did not take long to get served. There were approximately 450 persons family and friends in attendance.

Ed and Evelyn Scaff were married at Pilot Point, Texas. The reception then was held at Evelyn Kubala Scaff's parents' home in the country. The Scaffs now live in Hillsboro, Texas.

Ed and Evelyn have two daughters and four sons. They are also blessed to have 10 grandchildren. Their sons: Brad Scaff, and wife, Jane live in Austin, Texas; Dr. Bruce Scaff and wife, Rosie, live in Clifton, Texas, Dr. Brian Scaff and wife, Maggie Mae, reside in Austin, Texas and Brent Scaff lives in Arlington, Texas. The couple's daughters: Gayle Scaff Guenter Krengel lives in Arlington, Texas and Katrina Scaff Carl May resides in Mansfield, Texas.

The Charles Nemec Orchestra of West, Texas played for the Scaff's celebration dance at the National Hall Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

Lodge 92 congratulates this fine couple and wishes them many more years of healthy and happy married life.

Lodge 161, La Parita Jourdanton cites its Fraternalist of the Year SPJST Lodge No. 161, is pleased to announce that our candidate for Fraternalist of the Year is Brother Milton Koch of Pleasanton, Texas.

Milton Koch served his country during World War II, serving during the invasion on D-Day in France. Serving in the Army for three years, he returned home Milton Koch and became an automobile mechanic for 50 years, then retired at age 72. He still helps people in our neighborhood, wherever he is needed—helping with vehicle problems, mowing lawns or trimming trees.

Milton has been a Hermann Sons member for 56 years and a VFW member since 1973, where he served as a Quarter Master and Commander. He joined the SPJST as a member of Lodge 161 in 1989. The first two years with Lodge 161, Milton was vice president and the following six years, he served as a president. He is a member or St. John Lutheran Church of Jourdanton, where he serves as an

usher when needed.

Milton has been responsible for arranging two bus trips at and near Temple for Lodge 161 members and for some members of Lodge 202.

Also, Milton and his wife, Tillie, prepared several meals for our lodge meetings earlier this year.

Milton has always made it a point to go to most workshops and banquets.

He missed one due to illness. He has attended the district meetings and sales representative seminars when possible.

Milton and Tillie entered their decorated Ram Charger in six parades representing Lodge 161 and won one second place.

In addition to visiting ill members and friends in the hospital, Milton offers transportation, donates food to C.A.M. for the less fortunate people in the area as well as donating food to his church.

Milton has always wished for our lodge to have a youth club because the children would have so much to gain and enjoy and probably become the future leaders of our lodge. Looks like his wishes will soon come true.

Learning the Lodge 161 had not hosted a district meeting in over 20 years, Milton made it possible for two district meetings to be hosted by the lodge.

For the first two years as president of Lodge 161, Milton made trips to San Antonio for food for our meetings He also helped with the clean-up before and after the meetings. He has worked hard for our lodge and has done so with all his heart! Brother Jim Weist said, "Milton, you brought this lodge back to life again!"

Milton has worked at Fish Day for the past two years and has contributed to many fraternal activities in and around the community. He is always ready to lend a helping hand when needed. At the 1998 Fall Fun Day hosted by Lodge 202, Milton accepted the U.S. flag presented to our lodge by Rep. Ciro Rodriguez.

Lodge 183, Arlington invites members to attend Christmas party Saturday, December 12 Dear Members and Friends, Here we are nearing the end of another year. Each year brings its challenges and rewards. All of us at Lodge 183, Arlington hope that this year has been a rewarding year for each of you.

Personally, this year has been exceptionally kind to our family. Our lodge in Arlington has done many wonderful things to help those less fortunate in our community. We hope that next year will be even better.

Unfortunately, as time marches on, it takes a toll on those that we love so dearly. Robert lost his favorite uncle, Charles Staglik, earlier this year.

Uncle Charlie was a long time fixture, over 40 years as a bartender at Lodge 84, Dallas. He was bright and cheerful and always greeted everyone he knew with a smile and a handshake. a smile and a handshake. Uncle Charlie was an avid fisherman and usually had a story or two to tell about his exploits and the "the one that got away." He and Aunt Annie welcomed us to their home and we spent many pleasant holidays in the company of family. His two daughters, Bobbie and Betty, their husbands, John and James, their children and grandchildren, will miss "Paw Paw." Robert and I already feel the loss.

Lodge 183, Arlington has had several charity dinners this past year. We have made considerable donations to such organizations as St. Vincent de Paul, Tough Love, Women's Shelter and several others to mention a few.

At our last meeting, November 10th, the members voted to send a $500 donation to the International Red Cross to distribute sorely needed medicine to the victims to Hurricane Mitch in Nicaragua. It seems that at almost every monthly lodge meeting, we receive a letter of thanks for our many contributions.

The November lodge meeting was well attended. We elected new officers to bring us up to the year 2000. Leon Stiborek was chosen to be our next lodge president. All of the remaining officers retained their positions. Ken Cepak, this year's president, has done a tremendous job leading the lodge. He will take over as the treasurer. Daniel Roznovsky assumed the duties of recording secretary. A committee that determined our Fraternalist of the Year selected Ken Cepak.

Christmas Party This Saturday All of the officers gave their reports, and we discussed several items of business, old and new. Our lodge Christmas party will be held on Saturday evening, December 12th. It looks like our newly elected president and his "helper elves" will cook the meal themselves this year. We will have music, food, social hour, and we will top it off with a Chinese Gift Exchange. Members will enjoy the dinner, and non-members will pay a nominal charge. Mark your calendar, bring the kids, and let us enjoy the fesitivities!

As I mentioned, our year has been personally exciting. We have been on many enjoyable excursions including Las Vega, Nevada, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Los Angeles, California and a number of other notable destinations. Most recently, in October, Shelby, Robert and I flew to Cleveland, Ohio and drove through the most beau-

Wednesday, December 9, 1998—VESTNIK/11 tiful fall foliage in Ohio, Pennsylvania and western New York states. We also drove to Niagara Falls, New York and stayed for several days. They were having warmer than usual temperatures for that time of year, and we walked around, rode the "Maid of the Mist" boat that travels right up to the falls, explored the downtown area and generally had a great time.

We went over to the Canadian side of the falls and went up into a tower that over looks the falls some 50 or 60 stories up. We paid a visit to a casino on the Canadian side and walked around their downtown for a while.

From there, we drove back to Cleveland, Ohio, went to the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" and spent the better part of a day seeing this museum. It was an unforgettable trip. We plan to return to Niagara Falls in the future. And we still have one more trip planned for this year. We hope to go "clean out" the casinos in Nevada (yeah, right!). One of our lodge friends had some marvelous luck recently in Las Vegas. Maybe it will happen to us.

We have had a personal computer in our home for several years, thanks to our first daughter, Kelly, and her husband, Terry Ratcliffe. If you have read about the World Wide Web, or if you dabble in it, you know that you can access such things as health issues, business/financial news, purchase stocks, order books and records, plan trips, purchase airline tickets, follow other hobbies, contact pet owners (who breed specific types), find burial places of famous individuals—the list could go on and on. In a newspaper article, it was noted that if a person sat down and accessed every home page or the first page of each web site, it would take over 150 years at 24 hours a day to see them all. And the number of sites is growing daily.

Approximately 16 percent of homes in America have a computer connected to the Internet, and that figure is expected to double shortly after the new millennium.

Actually, the idea for the Internet started out as a defensive initiative for the armed forces. The idea was conceived in the early 1960s to connect the large second and third generation computers together to help protect our country during the cold war.

Communications could be transmitted in a matter of partial seconds. Then, the academic community came across the idea, and things began to expand.

When the business world realized what potential lingered in the Internet concept and desk top computers were introduced, the feeding frenzy occurred. It was almost like the "Big Bang Theory." But that's another story. Your Vestnik editor is a progressive individual, and you can e-mail your weekly lodge letters to Brian.

Stop me if you've heard this one:

I don't think I'd be going out on too far of a limb to predict that within five years, Internet home terminals will be almost as common in SPJST households as microwave ovens and cable television are today. It's an exciting time be alive and one that holds extraordinary promise for the SPJST —provided that we embrace new technologies and make a serious effort to explore the opportunities that are unfolding all around us. We express our sympathy to the bereaved families.

Secretary Vlasta Laznovksy read the minutes and Treasurer Lillie Kosarek gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as given. Jerry Koubek relayed a "hello" from Sister Mary Kepecek to all the members. Sister Mary celebrated her 90 plus birthday on November 13. Happy birthday to you, Mary, a little late — but better late than never.

Sunshine Chairperson Eleanor Pelzel sent a birthday greeting to Sisters Mary Kopecek, Bessie Taraba and Agnes Dolezal. "Happy Birthday" was sung to all the November birthday celebrants. She was born to Edward and Agnes Valdin Jarosek in Granger. She married R. B. Harrell on June 19, 1964, in Temple. She was a member of Buckholts, Lodge 15 since 1968.

Survivors are her husband, R.B. Harrell, of Moody; three sons, Milton.

He was born in the Marek Community to Cyril and Justina Valka Plachy. He was a member of the Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church for 76 years, a member of the KIT and Buckholts SPJST Lodge 15.

He married Mary Ann Davis in April 1950 in the Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Barbara Plachy; a brother, Leo Plachy and a sister, Stacy Plachy.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Plachy of Cameron; a son, Robert Lee Plachy of Cameron; a daughter, Betty Jane Plachy Brenek of Cameron; two sisters, Philipina Plachy Slovak of Cameron and Marie Plachy Smith of Austin; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services were held Wednesday, November 11, 1998 at Saints Cyril and Methodius Church in Marak with the Reverend Walter Matous officiating.

Burial was in the Saints Cyril and Methodius Cemetery.

He was a farmer and rancher and was a member of SPJST Lodge 23 and St. Mary's Catholic Church at Praha.

Survivors include his wife, Regina Fajkus Olsovsky of Schulenburg; a son, Dennis Olsovsky of Schulenburg; two sisters, Edith Kalina of Schulenburg and Viola Kutac of Hallettsville; two brother, Albert Olsovsky of Moravia and Willie Olsovsky of Apple Valley, Minnesota; and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father on April 14, 1972 and his mother on February 17, 1981; one sister, who died in infancy and one brother, Julius Olsovsky.

Rosary was recited at 6:30 p.m., Monday, November 9 at Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Flatonia.

Services were conducted at 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 10 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Praha.

Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in Praha.

She married Tom Adamek on November 26, 1931 at Ocker Brethren Church in Zabcikville, Texas. She was a long-time member of Ocker Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Adamek of Mesquite, Texas; three sisters, Ellen Machalek of Temple, Texas, Adella Elliot of New Mexico and Irene Reznicek of Waco, Texas; several nieces and nephews.

LINHART J. TECHNIK, of Moulton who passed away Friday, October 16, 1998 at the age of 81.

Brother Technik was born November 6, 1916 in Lavaca County to Ambrose and Agnes Barah Technik.

On November 6, 1955, he married Evelyn Drozd. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army in the 24th Infantry Division.

He was a member of Ascension Catholic Church and of Lodge 23, Moravia and president of R.V.O.S. Lodge. He also belonged toihe V.F.W. and American Legion of Moulton.

Survivors are his wife, Evelyn Technik; a daughter, Sheryl Mikeska of Hallettsville; a son, Ronald Technik of Moulton; three brothers, Julius and Alfred Technik of Halletsville and Victor Technik of Moulton; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, George and Jerome Technik, and two infant brothers.

Visitation began at 10:30 a.m.

Sunday October 18, and continued until 8:45 a.m. Monday, October 19 at Kubena Funeral Home Chapel.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.

Services were conducted at Ascension Catholic Church in Moravia. The Reverend Brian Crooks officiated.

Burial followed in the church cemetery under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were William Technik, Clif Miller, Eddie Barcak, Allan Barcak, Lenny Jalulfka and Michael Miller.

FRANK DOSKOCIL. Frank Doskocil, 85, died Thursday, November 5, 1998 in a Baytown hospital.

Frank was born in Buckholts, Texas in 1913 to Alois and Rosie Doskocil.

He was a resident of Baytown for 51 years and retired from Exxon after 30 years of service. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a member of Cedar Bayou Masonic Lodge, a past patron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. II and a member of Lodge 91, Crosby.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Thelma Davis Doskocil; a daughter, Jan Ellington and her husband, Andy, of Houston; brothers, Emil Doskocil and wife, Mary, and Luis Doskocil and his wife, Doris, all of Highlands; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 9th at Grace United Methodist Church with Dr. Royce Robb and Reverend Ken Goodall officiating. Burial was at White Cemetery in Highlands.

East, and they raised four children: Priscilla and Jeff Tilton, Patricia and Steve McCann, John and Janet East and Elizabeth Havemann. She is also survived by her grandchildren Bill, Catherine, Sarah, Justin, Jeffrey, Brian, Michael and Robert; Aunt Emma C. Smith of Houston, Uncle Gerald Laird of Rowayton, Connecticutt; and numerous cousins and friends especially Cindi, Chad and Catherine Nottmeier of Porter, Texas.

AGNES ELIZABETH TRAMPOTA. Mrs. Trampota, 82, of College Station and formerly of Seaton died in a College Station Hospital November 12.

Funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone.

Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.

Mrs. Trampota was born in Seaton on January 5, 1916 to Joe J. Motl and Marie Sodek Motl. She attended school in Seaton and cooked for the Seaton School for many years. She married Jerry Trampota in Crosby, Texas on January 6, 1945, and he preceded her in death June 7, 1986. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and WFLA No. 416 in Temple.

She was a life long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cyclone and served on the Altar Society.

She is survived by two sons and their spouses, Jerry D. and Lisa Trampota of College Station and Robert and Deborah Trampota of San Antonio; one daughter and spouse, Patsy and Fred Rodriguez of College Station; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Edith Mary Janca Motal, 67, of Katy, Texas died Saturday, November 21, 1998. She was born on August 15, 1931 at Shiner to Andrew and Mary Janca. She was a housewife and a member of SPJST Lodge 32 in Victoria.

Survivors include a daughter, Lanelle Wuenche of Waller; sons, Gregory Motal of Rosenbeg, Anthony Motal and Kevin Motal of Houston; sisters, Lillie Stanek of Yoakum, Rosie Meyer and Hattie Meyer of Shiner, Elenora Krause and Evelyn Ehler of

Hallettsville, and Marian Siegel of Cypress; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, George Motal, who died September 16, 1998.

Pallbearers were son, Kevin Motal; grandsons Bradley Motal, Scott Motal, Douglas Wuenche, Brian Wuenche, also Paul Reeves.

Services were held Tuesday, November 24, 1998 at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Reverend Alberto A. Maullon, Jr. officiating. Burial was at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Addicks, Texas. Schmidt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

July 20, 1929 to September 25, 1998 Beloved husband, Daddy and Pa Pa was taken from us so quickly, God needed a special person with a smile and quick wit. Willie will be remembered by all of us-his kind and Willie Provazek sincere manner, the jokes he would tell and even the way he wore his cap. Although he is no longer with us in flesh, he will always be with us in spirit.

We can take comfort in knowing that for Willie, the end came quickly, and he did not suffer. For us, life goes on, but Willie is in the Kingdom of Heaven, where we will see him again someday.

Thank you to everyone, the E.M.S. who worked so diligently, the priests and deacons for the services, pallbearers and organist. Thanks to everyone who attended the services, the visitation, flowers, memorials, food, all the cards and prayers which helped so much in our sorrow. Lodge 24, Cyclone readies for December 12 Christmas program Merry Christmas and Hello to the Lodge 24 Youth Club, Our lodge party will be held on December 12th at 4 p.m. We will begin with a social followed at 5 p.m. with the youth club memorial service and program. After the program, we will have a meal consisting of turkey and the trimmings. Each family is asked to please bring a salad or vegetable and a dessert.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club reports on November meeting The November, 1998, meeting of Lodge No. 47, Seaton Youth Club was called to order at 1 p.m. by Shannon Pechal. Amber Pechal led the Pledge of Allegiance and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. There were 13 members present and five adults.

Scholarship/Grant Program assists young members with expenses

One of the benefits that the SPJST makes available to its members is a competitive scholarship program. The Scholarship/ Grant Program is meant to encourage and assist younger members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals.

SPJST General Scholarships were established in 1982 for all SPJST members. General Scholarships are funded by the Supreme Lodge and voluntary contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Leadership Grants were established in 1996 for active youth club members and are funded solely through allocations by the Supreme Lodge.

The Application Process Applicants must have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for one year and hold an active certificate for the duration of the scholarship or grant. Likewise, recipients must enter college the fall term following the announcement of their award.

All SPJST scholarship/grant recipients must attend college or technical school on a full-time basis and carry a normal academic load without interruption and in agreement with the college calendar. Their personal and academic standards must remain satisfactory to the college and to the committee.

Our Youth Leader Donna Baca reported on the dates of the Christmas practice set for November 11 at 6 p.m., and the Christmas party is on December 12 at 4 p.m.

Youth members enjoyed having cake and coke for refreshments, which were served by Janet and Rachel Baca, Dawn Capps, Rebecca and Patrick Greger. After-meeting activities were a birthday party social.

begin preparing for Christmas early, preferably by the middle of November, at which time they already have money saved that they want to spend on Christmas. This is when the shops begin luring people with their window displays, mailbox flyers and commercials on all the television stations to help further the pre-Christmas madness.

Preparations for the Christmas holidays mostly get underway for Czechs with a good housecleaning. After cleaning their home completely, people begin slowly bringing in supplies and gifts for Christmas. They hide them in their cupboards and other hiding places, so their family members don't accidentally find them and ruin the surprise on Christmas Eve. This is when parents ask their children to write a letter to Jezisek (Baby Jesus) to tell him everything they want to find under the tree on Christmas Eve. The most pop-

ular gifts for Czech children over the last few years have been the Barbie doll, the Lego set and electronic pets or Tamagotchi.

The Christmas tree is decorated on Christmas Eve afternoon with whatever ornaments are in fashion at the moment. Recently, the preferred decorations have become natural ornaments - red apples, walnuts, gingerbread, straw or wooden figures and classical candles.

The Christmas Eve dinner is usually attended by the whole family, including grandma and grandpa. On St. Stephen's Day, December 25, people largely pay each other visits, feast, watch television, go on walks or just get some well-deserved rest after the strain of all their Christmas preparations.

The minutes were read and approved. We discussed that there was a State Volleyball Tournament at Bruceville-Eddy on Saturday, November 14, 1998. We also discussed that following the State tournament, there would be a District Two lock-in. After the meeting, we had a food drive. We collected over 200 items for the food drive.

At the next meeting, we will have elections for officers, and then we will be going to the movies for our Christmas party. The meeting was adjourned at 2:45. The next meeting will be on December 13, at 1:30 at Lodge 177.

Unless you deal with life insurance regularly, it can be an intimidating and sometimes difficult subject to discuss. It is for that very reason that we need to

routinely discuss and explain the many practical benefits of the life insurance products offered by the SPJST. If you haven't purchased insurance in a while, you may be surprised at the many affordable life insurance options available through your local lodge sales representative.

The following listing provides a brief summary of the insurance options that are available: Universal Life. A flexible protection plan issued to ages 0 to 80 which offers both a guaranteed and current interest rate on the cash value accumulation.

Mod-Term. A modern 10-year term product issued to ages 20-60, renewable to age 70 and convertible prior to age 65 with indeterminate premiums. Can be continued as an Annual Renewable Term certificate from age 70 to 95. Ask about original age enhancement option.

Mod-20. A modern 20-year term product issued to ages 20-50, renewable to age 70 and convertible to age 65 with indeterminate premiums. Can be continued as an Annual Renewable Term certificate from age 70 to 95.

Adult and Juvenile 20-Payment Life. A whole life product designed for both young and mature applicants with premiums payable for twenty years. Issued to ages 0 through 60.

Annual Renewable Term (ART). A one year term product that automatically renews each year with applicable premiums. Issued to ages 16 through 65. Can be converted to permanent insurance prior to age 65. Term expires at age 70.

Fifteen-Year Term. Offers term coverage to applicants at affordable premiums. Issued to ages 16 through 55. Can be converted to permanent insurance prior to age 65 or certificate coverage expires at age 70.

Term to Age 65. Offers affordable term coverage with issue ages 16 through 44. Convertible to permanent insurance prior to age 65.

Protector Plan. Designed as a reducing term insurance plan on two lives over a 20-, 25-, or 30-year period. Pays off on the death of the first insured. Premums are calculated on combination of two insureds ages. Can be used as a mortgage cancellation plan.

Twenty-, Twenty-five- and Thirty-Year-Decreasing Terms. Offer affordable coverage with reducing (decreasing) death benefit applicable for selected period of time.

Annuities. Both qualified (IRA) and non-qualifed are offered to SPJST members. Interest rates are posted every week on page three of the SPJST's weekly newspaper, Vestnik. Current rates, as of this printing appear on page 11 of this special issue.

Modified Premium Whole Life. Targets children and issued up to age 24. Affordable term converts to permanent whole life at age 25.
