Support Your Local Sales Reps With only a month-and-a-half to go in the 1998 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program, it's a fine time to acknowledge the ongoing efforts of our SPJST sales representatives. These are our brothers and sisters who get out into our local communities and tell the story of the services and benefits offered through our Society.

Typically, those sales representatives who are the most successful are those who know the best and latest methods for selling fraternal insurance and financial products They are aware of the trends affecting the marketplace and are able to visualize the world of tomorrow so that they can help our members and prospective members meet their financial obligations in the future.

Until such time that any "grand plan" becomes a reality, it remains important for all of us to question and challenge the way we do things. We must ask ourselves: Are we making the best use of our time, money, experiences and talent as well as someone else's? We need to look for—and then try—new and improved approaches to familiar tasks, situations and problems. In planning for the future of your lodge, a good place to start is to ask yourself where you want to be in the year 2000? Look beyond next month's utility bills and property tax assessments and ask "What greater good are we trying to achieve with our lodge?" The best marksman in the world can't hit a target unless he knows what he's aiming at. How can you — much less anyone else — know where your lodge is heading without a clearly defined set of objectives.

Andrew and Lola Vavra express appreciation and best wishes Dear Brothers and Sisters, How time flies! It's been six months since I retired as District One Director.

As you can imagine, that leaves me with a lot more free time: Time to work around the house; time to enjoy with my wife, Lola and family; and, time to remember my many wonderful friends in the SPJST. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I want to express my appreciation to all of the good people who have been there for Lola and me over the years — and especially over these last few months. Of course, there's my

good friend and past District Two Director Willie Kohutek and his wife, Adeline, who are always there for us.

Thanks, too, to all of our SPJST Home Office personnel, officers and the editor, who keep us informed and help out whenever we need them. Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment.

Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs.

Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.

Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value.

Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate. Therefore, as

the cash value approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically.

Option B : Increasing Death Benefit. The death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.

Hi! Our November meeting was held late in the afternoon due to All Soul's Day services at the local cemeteries. Brother Robert Dobecka, President, called the meeting to order, and Sister Stella Perez led all in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Wednesday, November 18, 1998—VESTNIK/5 report. Sister Hattie Kaska reported sending a get well card to Sister Irene Schiemenz. We hope you are feeling much better, Irene. Sister Kaska also reported sending sympathy cards to Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Gerik and Brittany and Tyler Angelo upon the loss of Mrs. Gerik's mother.

Brother Al Soukup, Vice President, gave us a report on our appreciation dinner that was held at Heitmiller's Steak House. He reported about 100 people in attendance, and all enjoyed their meal.

He also reported on our socials that are held on the first and third Fridays of the month. Brother Soukup reported about 16 to 18 people at our last social and that all enjoyed some games of domino playing. Brother Robert Dobecka does the cooking at our socials (sandwiches).

Last month with five Fridays in the month, we all enjoyed a Halloween social on the fifth Friday. Brother Ray Perez wore his "Jason" mask, and he didn't scare anyone! All of the youth members looked good in their various costumes, and we all had a good Halloween party of hot dogs and goodies.

Sister Lydia Dobecka, FAC, gave her report. She reported that the Pennies Drive was ongoing and asked for donations. She also mentioned about the exchange of gifts for our next meeting as it will be our Christmas party. She also brought up the idea of a trip to Brazos de Dios on November 29th, if anyone is interested. It is outside of Elm Mott, Texas, and it is their 11th annual Homestead Heritage Craft and Children's Fair that they have every Thanksgiving weekend. It is an exposition of the crafts, skills, accomplishments and lives of Christian craftsmen and children from across the country, with horse farming demonstrations, family music, good food and more.

Those with birthdays for the month of November at our meeting were Sisters Georgie Soukup and Lucille Sulak. Happy birthday to these two ladies and to all with a birhday this month.

Author Sean Gallup has written extensive introductions on Texas Czech life that accompany the book's 109 color photographs. With a detailed map of settlements and notes on language, population, names and other elements of Czech culture, Gallup's book is a substantial reference as well as a colorful tour through Czech Texas. Of special interest is the book's concluding section, "Into the Old Country." Gallup began working as a photojournalist in Prague after finishing his studies, and he was able to accompany some of the Texas Czechs as they traveled through the newly opened borders of Czechoslovakia to search for their family roots.

The meeting was then adjourned for us all to enjoy a meal of barbecue with all the trimmings and lost of good desserts. Mmm, good!

Our next meeting will be December 6 with turkey and dressing being our meal for the day. There will also be a program by the youth club, and Santa will pay us all a visit. Cooks and helpers will be needed by 9 a.m. the morning of Sunday, December 6th. I almost forgot, election of officers for the coming year will be held at this meeting. Consider running for an office or think about who you wish to nominate for an office for the year 1999.

Also, December 4th will be a social night at the lodge, which will also be Christmas decorating time. Come on out and enjoy some sandwiches.

Afterwards, we can all have fun decorating the hall for Christmas. We need lots of helpers. Thanks!

West Civic Leader Joe Holasek Celebrates 100th Birthday Longtime West resident Joe Holasek was honored October 39, 1998 on his 100th birthday with a reception at Lone Star Hall as family, friends and acquaintances gathered to mark the occasion. More than 100 well-wishers attended the party as they greeted the former mayor, businessman and civic leader. Known affectionately as "Mr. Joe," Brother Holasek is past president of Lodge 36, West.

Brother Holasek was born on October 30, 1898 in Lovcice, Moravia. He immigrated to the United States in 1911, the last of four children to be brought over by his father. Two other siblings stayed in Moravia with their mother and did not immigrate.

Brother Holasek spent his early years in America living with his sister, Rose, and her husband, Joe Vanek in Strawn, Texas. In 1913 and 1914, he worked as a farm laborer near La Grange, Texas. Joe later learned of a printing firm in Omaha, Nebraska that had a job opening for someone who knew the Czech language. So, with $20 that he borrowed from his brother, Charlie, in Penelope, Texas, Joe packed his bags and moved to Nebraska.

With the outbreak of World War I, Brother Holasek joined the U.S. Army. After brief training in Fort Logan, Colorado and Fort Bliss, Texas, he was off to France with the 16th Infantry, 1st Division. The division was one of the first four U.S. military units to land in Europe. The first three Americans to be killed in World War I were out of Brother Holasek's battalion.

During the war, Brother Holasek saw action as a machine gunner in several major battles. After being wounded, he spent time recuperating in an Army hospital in France. When he was better, Joe volunteered for more active service, only to be wounded again and gassed. As a result of his injuries, he spent the next two years recovering at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco.

After the war, Brother Holasek returned to Omaha and his job at national Printing. He also resumed his education, enrolling in Omaha University on the G.I. Bill. He married Mayme Vavra in Omaha. The Holasek's had two children, a daughter, Doris, and a son, Raymond.

Following a trip to Texas in 1924 to visit his brother Charlie in Penelope, Brother Holasek purchased an interest in the Cechoslovak Publishing company in West. A few years later, Brother Holasek and his partner, Brother August Morris, secured the contract to publish the Vestnik. The company maintained the Vestnik contract for the next 32 years. In addition, the firm published the Cechoslovak and The West News.

Brother Holasek became a member of the SPJST in 1924 and served as a delegate from 1928 through 1988. In addition to his active membership in the SPJST, he was an active Mason, Shriner and longtime member of Sokol.

A popular civic supporter, Brother Holasek was commissioner for eight years and mayor of West for 12 years.

During his tenure, the city obtained federal grants to construct the West Community Hospital. Capital funding was also raised to build the West Rest Haven and the Holasek housing addition in West.

For many years, Brother Holasek and his son, Raymond, have been ranching in the West area. During the 1940s, Brother Holasek was a leader in establishing the West Fair and Rodeo Association. He was the first president of that organization and the first president of the West Longhorn Club. He was also one of the founding fathers of the Heart of Texas Fair in Waco.

Brother Holasek's wife, Mayme passed away in 1964. He married Marie Rukusek Wachal in West in 1967. Marie passed away in August of 1994.

32, Victoria reports on October meeting Lodge

Our monthly meeting was hold October 14, 1998 at Victoria Electric Co-op building, with our president opening the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members. Minutes and the treasurer's report was given; all of the officers were present.

Our special guest was Reuben Petrusek, Department of Transportation resident engineer, who informed us about the progress of the by-pass loop and the access roads and the overpass.

He told us it will take some time before this is completed. This new road will benefit Victoria and the surrounding areas. Tourists that are bound for other destinations will be able to by-pass the downtown traffic. All of us enjoyed his talk very much. We want to thank him for this and hope he will keep us informed.

Christmas Party The Christmas party was discussed and it was suggested to have it on the second Wednesday in December. We will inform you of the place at a later date.

Valentine's Dance Our Valentine's Day Dance will be February 28, 1999 at Inez Community Center. You are all invited.

SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje held its monthly meeting on Sunday, October 19, 1998 at 3 p.m. with four officers and four members present.

President Bennie Reck opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silent prayer was observed for both our ill and deceased members.

The roll call of officers showed that Treasurer Madeline Shimek and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Delores Valigura absent. Trustees absent were Gene Valigura, Floyd Shimek, James Bacak and Frankie Vanek.

48, Beyersville tarok tournament set for this Saturday Lodge

The Fourth Annual PokornyPolanka Tarok Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 21, 1998 at SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville, Texas.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and play begins at 9:15 a.m.

Registration fee is $15 per person and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes. There will be six rounds of play. We have decided to add a new twist to the tournament this year.

Prizes will be awarded as usual to the top winners plus we will award ten cents a chip in increments of 10 chips.

Thus, if you have a score of 769 at the end of the day, you would have 160 chips to the good times ten cents; which would give you $16.

Playing rules are similar to SPJST rules except for calling "Povinost."

You can pass povinost, but if you go povinost, you cannot pay off. You draw yourself you play it.

Please pre-register by November 18 to help us estimate food supply; however, late entries are still welcome.

49, Rowena reports on quarterly meeting Lodge

Lodge 49, Rowena met for their quarterly meeting on November 4, 1998. President Elizabeth Walther opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for the deceased members.

Secretary Nancy Schwertner had roll call of officers and the reading of the minutes of the last meeting.

Communications were read by Elizabeth Walther and Nancy Schwertner.

District Director Stanley Broz gave a report on the changes in interest rates on annuities and mortgage loans. Billy Rollwitz, Rest Home Director, reported that the next meeting will be in Needville on November 14.

Discussion was held concerning the leasing of the lodge hall.

The next monthly game social will be on November 20. On December 12, a farm auction sale will be held on the lodge hail grounds. The lodge will sell refreshments and barbecue burgers during the sale.

The lodge will have their Christmas party on Friday, December 18 Each member is asked to bring a vegetable or dessert, and the lodge will furnish the meat.

Helen Hegwood has had rotator cup surgery but is doing fine. She stayed overnight in the hospital but is at home now.

A discussion on having one birthday club meeting a month instead of two was made. A motion was made and seconded that we table discussion until January.

Kathy Trefell thanked all those who worked in the pastry booth on Czech Day. Workers in the kitchen the first week of November were Dona Clooney, Corrine Kessler, Almeida Bravanec and Flo Orsag. We had meat loaf, string beans, mashed potatoes, garlic bread, cake and coffee or tea.

Miculka, Almeida Bravenec, Lillie Spies and Flo Orsag, who will make a cake for Evelyn Mikolas Kathy Trefell made a talk on Thanksgiving after which she wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

88, Houston Birthday Sisters report on November meeting, coming events Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President Kathy Trefell.

Secretary Dona Clooney read the minutes from the October meeting.

They were approved as read. She called the roll and we had 26 members present.

Our treasurer, Mary Kosut, was not present today so we had no report.

We had thought we would be going out to lunch sometime before the end of the year but a motion was made and seconded that we wait until the December meeting to decide when we will be going.

A motion was made that we have four Calcutta winners instead of two.

Remember ladies, our Christmas dinner is to be on the first Wednesday of December which will be December 2nd. We will be asking the officers of the lodge and their spouses. Those who do not have a spouse are entitled to bring one guest. The dinner is free to members and spouses but all other guests will be charged $5.00 per person. The officers of the birthday club will be serving the dinner.

Lodge 88, Houston will be awarding scholarships for the 1999 school year.

Application forms can now be picked up at the lodge office at 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas 77008 and must be postmarked by December 31, 1998.

To qualify, a student must be an active member of Lodge 88 (paying local lodge dues) for a period of at least two years and file an application during their senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of 1999.

Lodge 154, Fort Worth member Patti Gage named Decatur "Citizen of the Year" Patti Gage was named Decatur's Citizen of the Year at the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner.

Patti, her mother, Jeanie Mason, and the entire Mason family are members of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth.

Sister Gage, owner of Patti's Hair Parlor and Patti's Catering, was honored for her long commitment to Wise County Special Education students and adults with special needs.

She was presented a pendant and a $500 cash award by Martin Woodruff of Poco Graphite Inc., sponsors of the award for the Patti Gage past 30 years. many "For years, she has been the voice for those with no voice," said Mr. Woodruff, in his presentation. "For many years she has taken a personal interest in the Wise County Special Education students and adults with special needs. When it looked like the Wise County Olympathon would be done away with, she and other volunteers stepped in and kept it going. Today, it continues to serve as the highlight of the year for the many youngsters and adults who bask in the attention and recognition they receive there."

He continued, "She organized volunteers, assigned duties and started knocking on doors for donations.

It was never a question of 'will you give' but 'how much?' She created Sports Town at the Olympathon where local celebrities signed autographs for the Olympians and entertainment was provided ... ... When several adults qualified for the state Special Olympics and funds were not available to send them, she organized a bake sale in the business community.

The athletes sold baked goods — many of them made by our honoree — at the businesses. She also organized a garage sale and before long, there was plenty of money for the Austin trip ...

"She also did makeovers for the students, including hair, face and wardrobe and took her own 'glamour shots' so each had a photo to take home to their family. Her effort built self-esteem and teachers reported a marked difference in attitude in the students following the makovers "She has personally sponsored field trips for groups from the Wise County Transition Center to introduce them to a world they would not see otherwise. Each winter, she brings her plants to the center, where students re-pot them, creating Christmas and Mother's Day gifts for them to take home."

97, Placedo Christmas social set for December 13 Lodge

Dear Readers, Lodge 97, Placedo held its quarterly meeting on Thursday, September 10 at the Victoria County Electric Co-op Building. President Yvonne Garrett called the meeting to order at 6:30.

Secretary Dennis Vanek read the minutes and gave the treasurer's report.

District Six Director Matt Vanek gave a report on the district meeting which we hosted in August. We had a remarkable 130 members present. He said everyone really enjoyed the watermelon-eating contest, and he remarked that the caterer did an excellent job on the food.

Gay Revel gave a report on the trip to the Peddler's Show held in Corpus Christi in August. Eleven members from our lodge and Lodge No. 41, Port Lavaca attended.

President Yvonne Garrett made a report on a proposed project-volunteering at the Women's Crisis Center Thrift Store. This project was cancelled due to the excessive paperwork involved, but was quickly replaced with an excellent project of cleaning the Victoria County Electric Co-op auditorium, our meeting place. This has been our meeting place for many years at no cost. President Yvonne Garrett has already talked with Manager Winston Low. This cleaning will take place in December.

A letter from the Home Office was read concerning a barbecue cookoff to be held September 28 in Seaton.

Brother Charles Garrett made a motion to donate $100 to the cookoff.

An announcement was made that Youth Club Leader Pat Kovar had resigned. Member Brandi Dum was nominated by Gay Revel to be our interim youth club leader.

The Fraternalist of the Year was discussed. FAC Donna Vanek nominated Salesman Charles Garrett as a selection. Sister Sylvia Bluhm seconded.

Other presentations included the awarding of a gold star pin and Everyday HERO certificate for volunteer work to members Lester and Dorothy Fuzzell.

Her first stop was GamishPartenkirchen, Germany where one of her daughters, Donna Janca, resides.

After resting from the long flight and train ride, they embarked on a journey to the Czech Republic. The first city they vistied was Prague, one of the most beautful inland cities in Europ. They spent a couple of days touring the city, shopping at the local market, and taking a boat ride down the Vltava River with Frances enjoying talking Czech with the locals.

Driving further east into the Czech Republic, Frances found the small village, Vlachova Lhota. This is where her father, the late Joseph Dubec of Sealy, was born and lived until he was fourteen yearrs old before moving to Texas. She visited the small church in Vlachovice where he was baptized 98 years ago. She also visited with distant relatives who still live in the same small village, and who only speak the Czech language.

Another journey took them on an overnight train ride to Rome, Italy.

They visited the Vatican, the Coliseum, and the Trevi fountains.

They also viewed the ruins of the ancient Roman Empire.

Another adventure on their trip incuded a day trip by train to Munich, Germany where they attended the yearly Oktoberfest celebration.

Beautiful castles and churches were also sights seen in Germany. Among

The following day took them into the beautiful country of Austria where they enjoyed a great lunch at an outdoor restaurant in the small town of Lermoos.

Althought the two weeks seemed to fly by, Frances returned from her adventrue with many stories and pictures to share. Her oldest daughter, Nastasya, and a friend of the family, Kelly Slansky, accompanied her on this trip.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy The officers and membership of Lodge 135, Volna Cechie, Ennis, express their deepest sympathy to the family of

STANLEY HOUDEK, JR. who passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 1998, at the Baylor Medical Center in Dallas at the age of 77. Brother Houdek was born July 4, 1921 in Ennis the son of Stanley and Bettie Danek Houdek. He was reared in Ennis and was a graduate of Ennis High School.

In August 1942 he entered the U. S. Army Air Force. He served in the 447th heavy bomb group as a radio operator on a B-17. He was discharged October 2, 1945, as a tech sergeant. He received the distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, completing 30 bombing missions during World War II. On July 6, 1941, he was married to Dorothy Lois McCord. Mrs. Houdek preceded him in death March 31, 1978.

He worked for the Royal Crown Cola Company for 35 years. He owned and operated a small business, Enn-Tex services, for several years after retiring from the bottling business. On January 20, 1979, he was married to Jeanette Lancaster of Dallas. After their marriage they lived in Dallas for seven years. In 1985 they moved to Ennis.

Bro. Houdek was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as an usher and coordinator for the MAAGS. He served as a gymnastic instructor and past president of the Sokol in Ennis, where he was a 55 year member, a member of the IOOF, a member of SPJST Lodge 135, and a past member of the American Legion and VFW. Brother Houdek is survived by his wife, Jeanette, of Ennis, a son and his wife, Larry Don and Dolly Houdek, of Ennis; a daughter and her husband, Betty and Larry Mullins, of Ennis; his mother, Bettie Houdek, of Ennis; a brother and his wife, Albin and Helen Houdek, of Denton; five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, George Houdek.

Albert Joe Silhavy was born July 26, 1924 in Fort Worth. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church and was retired from Fort Worth Grain Exchange after thiry years.

Mr. Silhavy was preceded in death by his grandson, Zachary Christopher Winters, in 1995. Floyd Kiel was born on February 1, 1926 in Paige. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran.

Floyd inspired those he met, carrying their love, respect and friendship until the end. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed ballroom dancing.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Kiel.

Mrs. Helen Novikoff was born December 3, 1908 in Pinsk, Poland.

Helen arrived at Ellis Island at the age of 12 after a year long journey. Her family became part of the growing Russian-Polish Community on Fort Worth's North Side. She married James Novikoff, a Russian immigrant. She was a loving mother and grandmother who made dolls, cooked Polish dishes and taught the children to sing, "Ah Kotka Dva," a Polish lullaby. She loved children and America. She was a member of Rosen Heights Baptist Church.

Expression of Sympathy Westin (Sonny) Edwin Beyer, of Austin, age 66, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 1998 due to an extended illness.

He was born on October 31, 1932, in Schwertner, Texas to Claudia (Brunner) Beyer and the late Edwin R. Beyer. He graduated from Bartlett High School and served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

On September 20, 1958, he married Patricia Ann Urbanek of Taylor, Texas, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. They were blessed with three daughters.

One of his proudest achievements in life was owning and operating B & S TV Service for seventeen years.

He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church where he served as an acolyte for several years. He also worked as the Lunchroom Coordinator for St. Louis Catholic School for nine years. Mr. Beyer was also a member of Lodge 29, Taylor.

He will be remembered most for his smile and sense of humor.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Patricia; three daughters, Cathy La Cour and her husband, Mike, Susan Beyer and Russell Shaw, and Sherry Beeson and her husband, Ken, all of Austin; mother, Claudia Beyer of Georgetown, Texas; sister, Bernadine Trapani and her husband, Mike of Auburn, New York; brother, Eugene Beyer of Georgetown, Texas; three nephews and two nieces of New York; and his best friend, "Buddy."

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin R. Beyer; baby sister, Sandy; and mother and father-in-law, Annie and Ed Urbanek.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary was Sunday at the Amey Funeral Home.

The funeral mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 9, 1998 at St. Louis Catholic Church with the Reverend Larry Covington as celebrant.

Burial was at St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jim Deily, Jeremy Newman, Nickolas Howard, Robert Dunlap, Christopher Kubicek and Tommy Trapani.

Honorary pallbearers were acolytes from St. Louis Catholic Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke Street, Alexandria, Virginia, 22314.

The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the doctors and nurses of Seton Hospital.

Youth Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club sponsoring booth at Arts & Craft show this Saturday Dear Readers, The youth club held their November meeting on Friday, October 30,1998. There were nine members and one guest present. Our guest was Jesse Karlik. Our youth club also has one new member, Brooke Craig.

After the meeting the youth had their Halloween party and everyone had plenty of food, candy and drinks.

The youth had a good time.

Cookies were taken to the rest home for Halloween. Then the youth took cakes to the rest home on Wednesday, November 4. Cakes will need to be taken to the rest home again on December 2, 1998.

The youth drew names for Christmas and each child is to spend $7.50 for their gift.

The club will be going bowling on Sunday, November 15, 1998 at 2:30 p.m.

Dear Readers, Several of our youth club members had made plans to attend the District One Meetng and Fall Fun Day on October 18, 1998 at the New Tabor SPJST Hall, but the day before the meeting a tornado came through our county. We had a lot of rain. Our school was damaged and classes were canceled for the next couple of days.

The meeting was canceled and will be rescheduled at a later date. We hope everyone will make plans to attend.

We hope the weather will be good on that day.

On November 4, 1998, the Snook SPJST Youth Club held its November meeting at the Snook SPJST Hall. Our charities for the month included collecting coats, General Mills Box Tops and making fruit baskets for the elderly in our community.

Our speaker for the evening spoke to us about Czechoslovakia, and he showed us a video of his trip there. It was very interesting.

Our next meeting will be held December 6. We will be having our Christmas program at that time also.

Dear Lodge 24 Youth Club Members and Parents, I would like to thank all who helped at the Lodge 24 Barbecue Cookoff and Garage Sale. The breakfast burritos were a hit. We also had a great assortment of goodies for the bake sale. I know it is hard waking up early on Saturday, especially for you band students who came home at 1 a.m. from the Rogers/Hutto game. That is a real dedicated SPJST member who will be there even when it gets tough!

Thank you to the adult members who supported our youth by donating baked goods and for buying burritos and sweets.

Officers for 1999 - 2000 were elected at our November 7th meeting. The trees with the most canned goods under them will be the winners. Please help our youth club to win by donating canned goods.

All food collected will go to local food banks when the contest is over. Lack's is located at 2100 South 61st at Loop 363 in Temple. We will have a box for canned food at the next meeting on December 6th and at the Lodge Christmas party.

December 3rd, our youth club will be entering the Rosebud Parade. It starts at 6 p.m.

Program assists young members with expenses

One of the benefits that the SPJST makes available to its members is a competitive scholarship program. The Scholarship/ Grant Program is meant to encourage and assist younger members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals.

SPJST General Scholarships were established in 1982 for all SPJST members. General Scholarships are funded by the Supreme Lodge and voluntary contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Leadership Grants were established in 1996 for active youth club members and are funded solely through allocations by the Supreme Lodge.

Before the meeting we met up at the rest home to plant flowers and to decorate the tree. When we got back to the hall for our meeting we talked about several things. We have socials planned up until January.

We discussed the State Volleyball tournament and the District lock-in on the 14th. We also brought up the State lock-in which is in January up in Waco.

Our lodge will be riding a float in the Temple Christmas parade December 7th. This past summer our lodge received first place on out poster at District Youth Achievement Day. Well, we took it to the Texas Fraternal Congress in Austin and received second place.

Prague Arts Council promotes November 20 screening of "Marian" The Prague Arts Council of the Czech Cultural Center of Houston invites your attendance to a screening of the Czech film, Marian, on November 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

Produced in the Czech Republic and France in 1996, the film takes place outside Prague before the Velvet Revolution of the late 1980s and tells the story of a gypsy boy who falls victim to prejudices against his culture.

Unable to speak Czech, he is branded a troublemaker and spends a lifetime in captivity — first in an orphanage and later in various penal institutions.

Admission is $5. Several other Czech films will be shown at the Museum in March of 1999. Watch for details.

The mission of the Prague Arts Council is to present exhibits of paintings, sculptings, photograph, ceramic art, film festivals, concerts of individual artists and groups, and dance programs.

The Council's activities are expected to vary greatly and will rely on the help and support of other CCC members with contrasting interests and talents.
