Incentive Awards Within each If you're a newly elected lodge officer or committee chair, why not take advantage of this opportunity and provide attendees with a schedule of your 1999 meeting dates and special events?

Another idea: Have sign up sheets for various lodge committees available at the registration desk. I won't guarantee that either of these ideas will boost your 1999 attendance; however, it might just help to get some of our inactive members involved on a more regular basis.

Incentive Program Update Please note the chart that appears on the cover of this week's Vestnik and you can see the progress that your lodge is making towards achieving an incentive award for 1998. The Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program, now in its sixth year, was introduced as a way to integrate SPJST fraternal and financial objectives.

With two months to go in the 1998 membership drive, this is a good time to consider additional coverage for you and your family. Insurance and the related financial services offered through the SPJST are some of the most popular fraternal benefits our Society has to offer. They are important because they help our members take care of themselves and others.

Fraternal benefits-including the sale of life insurance-seldom happens on its own. It happens when we reach out and invite others to think about the future and take care of those who we love.

The whole mission of the SPJST is wrapped in the idea of reaching out to help people care for themselves and others.

SPJST Scholarships The SPJST is once again offering $750 scholarships to qualified members. Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of the SPJST for one year or more may submit a request for a scholarship application through December 31, 1998.

The Supreme Lodge Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and took a moment of silence in memory of the deceased members. President Leshikar was not present for the meeting.

The members of the Supreme Lodge expressed condolences to Mary and Howard Leshikar and family on the death of Mary's father, Edward Pickett, whose funeral was October 3, 1998.

MINUTES - The minutes were reviewed page by page. On page 220 the following deletion was reinstated back in the minutes under Audit, paragraph 4, "The Supreme Lodge members also discussed the expenses of the Youth Leaders' Retreat." On page 223 under Texas Department of Insurance, the first sentence was changed " ... the Texas Department of Insurance audit was received by the President's department in January and not turned over to the Financial Secretary until April or May, 1998."

On page 224, under District III first sentence should read " . . . Lodge 5-Pilot Point Tioga . . ." The third sentence should indicate District II/. Fourth paragraph, fourth line, comma should be omitted after ceremonial.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Hanus to accept the minutes with corrections. The motion carried unanimously.

The Supreme Lodge went into Executive Session at 9:20 a.m. to discuss a personnel matter. The executive session recessed at 11:01 a.m. on motion by Director Bayer, seconded by Director Hanus. The motion carried unanimously.

Rosemary Houser and John Nelson from Temple College in Taylor were welcomed to the meeting to make a presentation on the growth of the facility and the expansion plan for the next several years.

Bernie Nors with Agency of Independent Marketers, Inc. (AIM) and Ted Ginsberg of Fortis Investors, Inc. were welcomed to the meeting. Director Krizan introduced the gentlemen who made a presentation concerning possible new products, agency sponsorship, and other technical support.

Recess was taken from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

OLD BUSINESS Vice President Mikeska reported that President Leshikar had requested that the Vice President present his report.

GOLF TOURNAMENT - A discussion was held concerning whether the Society should sponsor a statewide golf tournament. The discussion consisted of the time and cost involved to host such an event.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved not to sponsor the statewide golf tournament and Director Hanus seconded the motion. Voting in favor were Director Hanus, Director Bayer, Director Broz, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Krizan, and Director Klinkovsky. Voting against were Secretary -Treasurer Anglin, Vice President Mikeska, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Vanek, and Director Victorick. The motion passed.

4/VESTNIKâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Wednesday, November 11, 1998 Director Bayer presented a request from SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi requesting for the Supreme Lodge to jointly sponsor a Deep Sea Fishing contest with Lodge 79. It was decided that at this time the Supreme Lodge was not interested in sponsoring a Deep Sea Fishing Contest.

LODGE INCENTIVE BANQUET AND WORKSHOP - Lodge 177, Academy presented a request to host the Lodge Incentive Banquet and Local Lodge Officers Workshop for 1999. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to have the Lodge Incentive Banquet and Local Lodge Officers Workshop at Lodge 177, authorizing $1,500.00 for lodge rental plus expense not to exceed $500.00 for decorations which will be payable to hosting lodge. No other expenditures are authorized for decorations. The motion was seconded by Director Broz. Voting in favor were Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Klinkovsky. The motion carried.

CREDIT CARD - Vice President Mikeska presented information that MBNA would consider doing a credit card with the SPJST emblem with SPJST receiving a percentage of all the charges. Legal Advisor Kacir moved to table the decision concerning the credit card until the next meeting. Director Klinkovsky seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

Chairman Vanek welcomed Evelyn Mikeska of Lodge 196 and Vice President Nedbalek of Lodge 196. Evelyn Mikeska talked about local lodges paying ad valorem taxes. She pointed out that some FICs are in favor of presenting information to the Texas Fraternal Congress requesting help in presenting legislation to have Fraternal Societies exempt from ad valorem taxes. They expressed their appreciation for being allowed to speak on this important subject. It was pointed out that this subject is on the President's agenda and will be considered later during this Supreme Lodge meeting. The Board supports efforts to eliminate ad valorem taxes on lodge buildings.

DISCOUNT TO MEMBERS - There was a discussion as to whether members can put discount coupons in the directory for members. Director Victorick moved and Director Klinkovsky seconded to table the discussion until the next meeting so the officers can provide more information concerning businesses offering discounts. The motion passed unanimously.

CEMETERY MARKERS - Vice-President Mikeska moved to affirm the idea of having cemetery markers available for SPJST members and proceed with providing more information at the next meeting. Director Hanus seconded the motion.

Voting in favor were Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. Abstaining was Financial Secretary Mikulas.

The motion passed unanimously.

Chairman Vanek welcomed Youth State Director Zavodny to the meeting since this is her first time to present a report as the State Youth Director.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - State Youth Director Zavodny's report was reviewed. The SPJST 1998-1999 royalty made appearances at the Westfest and the Comal Country Fair Parade. The total youth attending camp during the 1998 camping season was 308, which was up this year. There will be a District Youth Counselors meeting on Saturday, October 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the Home Office.

State Youth Director Zavodny stated that as the new State Youth Director she will work to increase youth membership, increase activity in youth clubs, motivating young people to excel in all aspects of life, prepare young people to prepare for tomorrow, and work on programs to attract young people and keep them involved.

The meeting recessed at 3:10 p.m. until 3:25 p.m.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz's report was reviewed.

MUSEUM REPORT - The LAM report was reviewed. There were 359 visitors from Texas, 28 visitors from outside of Texas and 21 visitors from outside of the United States.

BARBECUE COOKOFF - By common consent it was agreed that all monies contributed by the lodges and business would be distributed among the four statewide charities SPJST sponsored for 1998.

SALES - Vice President Mikeska reported there were 150 insurance applications written in September and $6,724,000.00 of insurance was issued. The priorities of the insurance department are recruiting, training and motivating. Vice President Mikeska congratulated District IV and District VI on having already met their insurance quotas for 1998. He challenged the other districts to do the same.

NEW LODGES - Director Bayer moved and Secretary-Treasurer Anglin seconded to extend the expiration date to January 31, 1999 for organizing new lodges in process. The motion carried unanimously.

STATE FIELD MANAGER'S REPORT - State Field Manager McBride report was reviewed. Vice President Mikeska expressed his compliments on State Field Manager McBride and the great job he is doing in the sales area.

NEW PRODUCTS - Vice President Mikeska reported Actuary John Agee has reviewed the Universal Life target premiums and the changes in the premium are in effect. The insurance department is researching competitive premium on whole life and a rider with an accelerated living benefit. The new rate cards will be distributed at the next sales representative classes scheduled to begin , in late October and early November.

SALES INCENTIVE - Vice President Mikeska presented the October sales contest of 31 days to the Grand which is similar to the September sales contest. Vice President Mikeska presented a request for the following sales contest for 1999.

1. The incentive program to be the same as 1998 with the State Top Producers based on number of applications and the amount of insurance written; the top district producer based on number of applications and the amount of insurance written; annual recognition of the top producers in the district and state; the consistency club, the million dollar producers, and the Fraternal Insurance Counselor Program.

2. The quotas for 1999 would be a 5% increase of the 1998 year end production but not less than the 1998 quota.

3. Vice President Mikeska also requested $30,000.00 for the remaining basic program.

4. A Banquet for producing Sales Representatives from districts who attained their 1998 quota.

Director Bayer moved to accept Vice President Mikeska's recommendation for the sales incentives program. Director Victorick seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

LICENSING/LEGISLATIVE DEVELOPMENTS - Vice President Mikeska presented information on challenges facing the SPJST with the proposed legislation of the licensing of the sales representatives.

Recess was taken from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.

The discussion concerning licensing of sales representative and possible legislation continued. Vice President indicated the options available to SPJST concerning licensing of sales representatives: 1. Do nothing until legislation is passed.

2. Start preparing to have sales representatives trained in anticipation of legislation requiring licensing.

3. Continue our efforts to try to have domestic Fraternal sales representatives exempt from being licensed which is the plan of record.

A lengthy discussion concerning the proposed legislation of the licensing of the sales representatives followed.

Vice President Mikeska moved to recommend directing the Supreme Lodge to continue working for an exemption for the sales representatives of domestic fraternals and to not enter into any type agreement for sponsorship of our Sales Representatives. Financial Secretary Mikulas seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. There was a consensus of opinion that Vice President Mikeska continue to pursue and work out detail of sponsorship in the event we are unable to obtain an exemption.

Chairman Vanek welcomed Editor Vanicek to the meeting.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that she had not received the local lodge roster for 1998 from Lodge 188-Centerville, Lodge 167Penelope, Lodge 149-Alvin, Lodge 181-Conroe, Lodge 41-Port Lavaca, and Lodge 151-Wharton. The request for the 1999 local lodge officers listing will be mailed about the first of December. If a lodge does not submit their local lodge roster during the year, the local lodge is not entitled to receive their lodge refund or lodge incentive award.

There are eight lodges that have not submitted copies of their 990/990T to the Home Office. Legal Advisor Kacir is following up with a letter to these lodges.

VACANT LOT - There was a lengthy discussion concerning future use of the vacant lot near the Home Office. The lot across the street from the Home Office building was appraised by Logan W. Crews. Mr. Crews estimated the value of the property to be $34,000.00. The officers are recommending that SPJST not sell the property.

COOKBOOKS - Secretary-Anglin reported all of the cookbooks have been sold and the proceeds from the sales will be donated to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Director Klinkovsky moved to order more cookbooks and the proceeds from the sale of these books go towards an endowed scholarship fund. Director Hanus seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

VESTNIK - The total weekly subscription of the Vestnik is 10,026 and the weekly postage cost amounts to approximately $1,735.00 and publishing cost

Wednesday, November 11, 1998â&#x20AC;&#x201D;VESTNIK/5 $1,150.00 per week. Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on an upcoming increase in postage for 1999.

INCENTIVE PROGRAMS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported as of September 30, 1998 one lodge has met the membership requirement for the platinum award; six lodges have met the membership requirement for the gold award; four fOr the silver award, four for the bronze award, nine for the honorable mention, and fifteen for the first step award.

SUMMARY OF ANNUITIES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that Annuity I was first sold in 1984. Currently there are 1,326 Annuity I certificates for a total of $20,763,584.93. There are 1,202 Annuity II certificates for a total value of $24,697,621.46. As of September 30, 1998 there are nine Roth IRAs for a total amount of $72,409.59. The total amount deposited in Annuities for the first nine months of 1998 was $2,921,640.46.

COMPUTERS - Financial Secretary Mikulas will write a letter to the Department of Insurance that SPJST is in compliance for the year 2000. The next step will be to test all the personal computers and lap tops to make sure they are in compliance for the year 2000 which is currently being done.

The meeting recessed from 10:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. and then the Supreme Lodge members took a tour of the museum. The officers are to study and make recommendations at the next Supreme Lodge meeting on how to better utilize the space.

LITIGATION/BANKRUPTCIES/FORECLOSURE - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on the mortgages and certificates in bankruptcy and the mortgages in process of foreclosure and possible litigation.

The Southwestern Legal Foundation seminar was very informative and Legal Advisor Kacir expressed his appreciation for being allowed to attend.

EDITOR - Editor Vanicek introduced Kathryn Smith who is the new Communication Assistant.

MEMBER BENEFITS - In an effort to increase readership and extend a meaningful benefit to our members who own businesses, Editor Vanicek proposed the insertion of "coupon-style" ads in the Vestnik. The Editor was requested to do research and learn whether or not the additional advertising would affect the postage.

SPJST CALENDAR - Editor Vanicek reported that the SPJST calendars were completed and would be mailed to the members by the middle of October. By completing the project "in house," Editor Vanicek reported savings of approximately 50 percent over the previous year's calendars. The Supreme Lodge expressed appreciation of the way the calendar was completed and mailed in a timely manner and the savings. The cost of the calendars was approximately .30 per calendar.

STATEWIDE CHARITIES - Editor Vanicek reported on continued oversight and promotional efforts relative to SPJST's Statewide Charity Programs. He reported that, to date, more than 500 compact discs and cassettes had been sold.

The profits from the sale of these will be donated to the statewide charities.

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS - The Texas A & M Press are offering a 35% discount on books published by the Texas A & M Press. Tentative plans are to promote some of the books in the Vestnik. [sic.]

TEXAS A&M CZECH CLUB - Editor Vanicek presented information on the Texas A&M University newly formed Czech Club. He recommended presenting the Czech club with a cash grant renewable in the spring semester. This grant could be consistent with the amount allocated for local lodges providing instructions in the Czech language. [sic.]

Vice President Mikeska moved to authorize of the Supreme Lodge Officers to make a donation to the A & M Czech Club if there is a need for the funds.

Financial Secretary Mikulas seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

AD VALOREM TAX RELIEF - Editor Vanicek recommended that SPJST actively support the repeal of ad valorem taxation through a Texas Constitutional Amendment. [sic.]

Editor Vanicek recommended that the Supreme Lodge consider the benefit of reporting financial information in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Practices; establishing a coordinated business plan with measurable objectives and accountabilities; and hold regular staff meetings, preferably on a weekly basis. [sic.]

DISTRICT I - Director Victorick reported on attending the District Youth Achievement Day, Tarok Tournament, FIC dinner, District I at Camp Val Verde, Lodge 13-Dime Box meeting, FAC workshop at Lodge 186-Caldwell, Lodge 201-Bleiblerville 50 year pin presentation and the Youth Appreciation Banquet at Lodge 17-New Tabor.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky reported on attending the FIC dinner, State Royalty and Youth Achievement Day, Lodge 18- Elgin meeting, District II meet-

ing at BLORA, Lodge 182-Falls County, and the BBQ Cookoff.

Director Klinkovsky commended State Field Manager McBride for the work he did on the statewide barbecue cookoff. ,Director Klinkovsky also reported on attending the opening of the new lodge hall at Lodge 187-Round Rock.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan thanked Honorary Director Pokladnik attending Lodge 204-Stephenville Chartering Ceremony in his behalf due to a prior commitment.

He thanked Vice President Mikeska for promotional items for the West Chamber Banquet, and for SPJST being a corporate sponsor for the Pilot Point Educational Foundation Gala in conjunction with Lodge 5-Pilot Point-Troga. He also thanked Vice President Mikeska's Department for implementing a corporate calendar on a trial basis.

Director Krizan then moved for the Vice President's department to be in charge of the SPJST corporate calendar. Director Hanus seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

Director Krizan gave an update on Lodge 180-Burleson and itis current financial status and welcomed President John Hilsher from Lodge 180-Burleson to the meeting. President Hilsher requested a refinance of the lodge's loan and also additional funds for a total of $70,000.00 for fifteen years to help the lodge over financial problems.

Director Krizan stated that Lodge 5-Pilot Point-Tioga continues to make progress and now has rented a designated meeting place for the second Sunday of each month, and has another new sales representative.

Director Krizan announced that Lodge 54-West also has a new sales representative and hopes that the lodge will start a youth club and go towards monthly meeting. The lodge will be having a fund raiser on November 15, 1998, for their building fund.

Director Krizan said that Lodge 178-Longview's members have received letters asking if any of them would like to become new sales representatives.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz thanked President Leshikar for attending the District IV fall meeting. Director Broz made a report on the National Fraternal Congress Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. Director Broz requested the officers meet at least once a week.

Director Broz attended local lodge meetings at Lodge 49-Rowena, Lodge 160San Angelo, Lodge 93-Seymour, and the FIC graduation dinner. He continues to work with them at Wichita Falls local lodge. He expressed his appreciation to the sales representatives in District IV for meeting their 1998 sales quota.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus reported on activities at Lodge 142-Houston and Lodge 196-Houston-West. He reported that he and Honorary Supreme Lodge Chairman Sid Pokladnik represented the SPJST at a banquet celebrating the Grand Order of Calanthe's 100th Anniversary. He attended the meeting of the Gulf Coast FIC. Lodge 156-Baytown is now listing their meetings in the Vestnik.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer reported on attending meetings at Lodges 107Floresville, 185-New Braunfels, 133-San Antonio, and 202-Jourdanton with Field Representative Waggner and the State Royalty and State YAD. He reported Lodge 202-Jourdanton has two new sales representatives and five new members.

The FIC graduation was well attended.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek attended District VI DYC in Hillje, FIC graduation dinner, State Royalty, and State YAD. He was present to present 50 years pins to Lodge 4-Halletsville members, District VI Fun Day. He reported that Lodge 41 has decided to begin having monthly meetings.

Director Vanek said that he appreciates the sale representatives in District VI, as they are doing a good job and they have met their 1998 sales quota.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - The special committee was requested by Chairman Vanek to attend the October 17, 1998 meeting of the DYCs. The special committee should present the idea of two or three summer camps instead of seven different camps and suggest the DYCs encourage the Youth Leaders to increase the number of active youth club members to bring youth club numbers up.

The Supreme Lodge requested State Youth Director Zavodny for a clarification tc determine whether or not a youth state lock-in could be held at the previous location. The Supreme Lodge members were told the SPJST would not be allowed to use that facility again.

NEW BUSINESS: MINUTES OF BOARD MEETING - President Leshikar's report brought up the possibility of the Supreme Lodge meeting being taped. After a discussion, no action was taken.

6/VESTNIKâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Wednesday, November 11, 1998 SALARIES - By common consent it was decided that the officers will make recommendation for salaries increases in the January Supreme Lodge meeting. In making the recommendation, Director Krizan requested that any cost of living or merit increases be presented separately.

CHRISTMAS BONUS - The officers recommended that a Christmas bonus of one month's salary not to exceed a maximum of $2,000.00 be paid to each employee with the following exceptions: 1. $150.00 for each janitor; 2. State Youth Director Zavodny's bonus would be a month's salary based on her salary as the Communications Assistant, and 3. for employees who have worked less than a year, the bonus would be prorated based on the number of months they have worked.

Director Bayer moved to accept the Christmas bonus package payable about the middle of December. Legal Advisor Kacir seconded the motion. Voting in favor were Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Krizan.

Director Klinkovsky abstained.

AD VALOREM TAXES - There was a report concerning the local lodges and ad valorem taxes in both the President's report and the Editor's report. Legal Advisor Kacir moved for President Leshikar to be the leader of this important issue and be in charge of contacting other fraternals to see if they are interested in also pursuing the exemption of ad valorem taxes for local lodges. Director Victorick seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

Vice President Mikeska expressed President Leshikar's thanks for allowing him to attend the opening of the Czech Celebration and the National Fraternal Congress in Atlanta.

SCHOLARSHIP - Vice President Mikeska reported there have been 56 requests for scholarships for 1999.

AUTOMATED POLICY - Vice President Mikeska reported automated policy software is currently available which will print the entire certificate form. To implement the use of this software it will be necessary to purchase another personal computer and printer. Vice President Mikeska moved to approve the purchase of another personal computer and printer to be used for the policy issue software package. Legal Advisor Kacir seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

TEXAS FRATERNAL CONGRESS - The Texas Fraternal is scheduled to be held October 23, 24, and 25, 1998 in Austin, Texas. Vice President Mikeska moved to allow the State Field Manager McBride and the State Field Representatives to attend the Texas Fraternal Congress. Seconded by Director Bayer. The motion carried unanimously.

Any sales representative that has a FIC designation and is a million dollar producer excluding Home Office employees may attend the Texas Fraternal Congress.

Director Broz moved to allow employee Kathy Fritz who is a FIC and a million dollar producer to attend the Texas Fraternal Congress. The motion was seconded by Director Krizan and carried unanimously.

MORTGAGE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented the loans that were 90 days past due with her recommendations. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to accept the recommendations on the past due mortgage loans. Financial Secretary Mikulas seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to set a loss reserve on $8,000.00 for the delinquent loans. Vice President Mikeska seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

LOAN MODIFICATION PROGRAMS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented a mortgage loan modification program. The loan interest rate can be modified to 1/2 of a percent above the interest rate in force at the time the modification request is received at the Home Office. Commercial loans cannot .be modified.

The cost to the borrower would be $400.00 or 1% of the unpaid principal balance, whichever is greater. The borrower has to be current with their payments and taxes before being eligible to modify their loan. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to approve the loan modification program. Director Broz seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

UNIVERSAL LIFE - There was a discussion about the interest rates of Universal Life and the interest rates at which money can be invested. SecretaryTreasurer Anglin moved to change the rate of interest on Universal Life to 6.75% through January 31, 1999. Director Krizan seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

ANNUITIES - The interest rate of the annuities was discussed. After a discussion, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to lower the rate of Annuity I to 5%.

Director Hanus seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer moved to change the interest rates of Annuity II to 5-3/4%.

Legal Advisor Kacir seconded the motion. Voting in favor were Director Broz, Director Victorick, Legal Advisor Kacir, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, and

Director Hanus. Voting against were Director Bayer, Director Krizan, Director Klinkovsky, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Vice President Mikeska, and Director Vanek. Motion failed.

Director Krizan moved to change Annuity II rates to 6% through January 31, 1999. Director Klinkovsky seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to change the Roth IRA interest rate to 6% through January 31, 1999. Legal Advisor Kacir seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to lower the rate of the immediate annuity to 6% through January 31, 1999. Legal Advisor Kacir seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.

Recess was taken from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.

INVESTMENTS - The investments for the quarter July 1 through September 30, 1998 were reviewed. Director Broz moved to ratify the investments, seconded by Director Bayer. The motion carried unanimously.

MAIL POLL - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported there were twelve votes in favor of creating lodges in the following locations and their numbers: 212-Boerne 213-Fredricksburg 214-Beeville Vice President Mikeska moved to ratify the mail poll. The motion was seconded

by Director Bayer. The motion carried unanimously.

IRS AUDITS - Secretary Anglin reported there are six fraternal benefit societies (local lodges and Home Offices) that are being audited by the IRS. The five lodges of the SPJST which have notified the Home Office of being audited are Lodge 9-Snook, Lodge 13-Dime Box, Lodge 17-New Tabor, Lodge 66-Elm Mott, and Lodge 81-Needville.

CAMP INSURANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on a letter from the insurance carrier requesting a copy of the crisis management plan in place for sexual abuse incidents and/or any other crisis type incident. Following a lengthy discussion the officers are to put the plan in final form and forward a copy to the insurance carrier.

EXPENDITURE POLICY - There was a lengthy discussion on the expenditure policy of SPJST. A copy of the expenditure policy is to be a part of the exhibits.

Director Krizan moved to approve the expenditure policy effective November 1, 1998. Director Bayer seconded the motion. All in favor were Vice President Mikeska, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Victorick, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, Director Bayer, Legal Advisor Kacir, and Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. Voting against was Director Klinkovsky.

The motion passed.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas presented a comparison of the expenses and income for the years of 1997 and 1998. The total income has decreased by .04% and the expenses have decreased by 1% for the nine months.

BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas presented an itemized listing of all income and expenses for the first nine months of 1998 comparing the actual expenses to the budget amount.

The meeting recessed from 10:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

"A" & "B" CERTIFICATES - It was set forth that according to Article 33 - 14, the Supreme Lodge is to determine the discount of Class "A" and "B" certificates for 1999. Previous discounts allowed a 25% reduction of premiums of certificates in classes "A" and "B" whose, certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 years and an additional 25% reduction when they attain the age of 75 years. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to continue the same discounts through 1999. Director Bayer seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

REFUND TO LODGES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the refund formula for 1997 was computed at a rate of $1.00 per paid up certificate and $8.50 per premium paying certificate, less annuities. A recommendation for 1998 will be presented during the January 1999 Supreme Lodge meeting.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the books of the Society will be closed effective December 30, 1998 at 12:01 p.m.

RETIREMENT PLAN - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on a letter from Ronald W. Tobleman, Actuary from Rudd and Wisdon referring to the SPJST Retirement Plan Asset Sufficiency. There was a lengthy discussion comparing a defined benefit plan and a defined contribution plan. Director Krizan moved to give the Financial Secretary the authority to reserve the amount recommended by the actuary and reserve funds over and above minimum ERISSA funding

Wednesday, November 11, 1998--VESTNHQ7 for years 1998, 1999, and 2000 for the defined benefit retirement plan to offset the potential liability in the event the plan should be terminated. Director Klinkovsky seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK - Proposed revisions to the employee handbook were presented by Legal Advisor Kacir. There was a lengthy discussion concerning the revisions. Financial Secretary Mikulas was requested to present information about a time clock at the January Supreme Lodge meeting.

Director Broz moved to accept the revisions to the employee handbook with the amendment that non-working time in excess of 15 minutes must be charged as vacation or sick leave is effective immediately; the amendment that accumulated sick leave of over 66 hours will be paid at 50% of the employees salary will be effective January 1, 1999; and all other revisions are effective October 15, 1998. Director Hanus seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

DISTRICT I - Director Victorick Presented a request from a member for playground equipment for the Fayetteville Schools. After a discussion, it was decided that no funds were available for this project.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky presented information and difficulties encountered with loan applications where the property does not have 40 foot easement. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to reconsider the requirement of mortgage loans having a forty foot easement. Vice President Mikeska seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

Director Krizan informed the Supreme Lodge about TU Electric's new GTU rate which is designed to provide a lower demand charge for churches and rural buildings which are mostly operated on weekends and nights away from peak demand time. A local SPJST lodge in his district has reported a 25 to 30% reduction. All lodges using TU Electric services are urged to contact them for consideration.

Director Krizan invited everyone to attend the District III meeting on October 25, 1998 at Lodge 92-Fort Worth and the Arts and Craft show at Lodge 66Waco, on November 21, 1998.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz reported on a big demand for mortgage loans and numerous inquiries for both home and farm loans. He expressed his opinion that this had been a productive meeting.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus thanked Legal Advisor Kacir for attending the District V meeting. He reported on the upcoming District V FAC workshop, the Czech Day at Lodge 172-Pasadena, the Czech Day at Lodge 88-Houston, and an upcoming raffle at Lodge 81-Needville.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer presented the request from Lodge 79-Corpus Christi for a Deep Sea Fishing Tournament. He requested an itemized listing of the costs for the Chamber After Hours. The District VII Fall meeting will be hosted by Lodge 202-Jourdanton and he invited everyone to attend.

DISTRICT VI - Chairman Vanek moved to give the officers, directors, and editor a turkey and ham for Christmas not to exceed $100.00. Director Broz seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

Director Vanek commented that sales are doing good and he complimented Vice President Mikeska on his and his staff's hard work. He expressed the appreciation of the directors to President Leshikar, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, and Secretary-Treasurer Anglin for the fine job they are doing.

Around the State State Youth Director encourages young members to get involved in local and statewide activities Dear Members and Friends, Another month has gone by, and the holiday season is just upon us.

Every day is something new, and October was no different as I completed my first State Youth Director's report to the Supreme Lodge. The Supreme Lodge met in early October for their quarterly meeting. I visited with them in their meeting a couple of times—first, while my report was being presented, and second, to present information on past and future state lock-ins. District Youth Counselors and a special youth committee of the Supreme Lodge met at the Home Office on October 17. What a great meeting! Lots of thoughts and ideas emerged. I think ground has been broken on building the 21st century youth program. That's exciting! In the afternoon, DYCs met and discussed 19992000 Youth Club Rule Book recommendations which will be presented to the Supreme Lodge in their January meeting for approval.

Election of Youth Club Officers I have received many questions about this year's youth club officers elections. The time of year for the elections was changed in the 1998 rule book. Please read pages 14 to 18 of the youth club rule book. Here are some questions and answers:

When do we elect our youth club officers?

The time to elect your youth club's officers for 1999-2000 is in conjunction with your adult lodge's annual election of officers (usually in your November or December meeting).

These officers that we elect, when will they take office?

The officers that your youth club elects in November or December will attend the youth club officers workshop in January and take office in June, 1999. These newly elected officers will serve from June 1, 1999, to May 31, 2000.

What about our current youth club officers—how long do they stay in their positions?

Your current officers will serve in their positions until May, 1999.

SPJST Home Office and Museum Holiday Open House December 7 You are invited to the SPJST Home Office and Museum Holiday Open House on Monday, December 7. The Temple Christmas Parade is at 6:30 p.m. Then, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., the Home Office and Museum invites everyone to celebrate the season at Holiday Open House. The event will feature horse-drawn carriage rides, Santa Claus, Christmas story telling, refreshments, and live holiday music.

The prayer was lead by President David and followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. A potluck dinner was served.

The minutes of the meeting held July 9, 1998 were read by Treasurer Elise Koerner in the absence of Secretary Sherrie Watkins and approved.

President David asked Treasurer Koerner to take the minutes of this meeting.

The treasurer's report was given by Treasurer Koerner. The balance in the general fund was $687.25 and the balance in the building fund was $4,976.94. The report was aproved.

Lodge 5, Pilot PointTioga reports on October meeting

President David thanked Kathy Koerner for getting the CCD building for our meetings. Kathy stated that we could use the building every month for a cost of $25. The lodge will also be responsible for clean-up.

President David stated that this way we can have the meetings on the second Sunday of every month.

President David thanked the guests for attending.

New Members Wanted Elise Koerner reminded all members that in order for our lodge to receive the Platinum Award and $2,000 from the Supreme Lodge again this year, we have to have 50 new members. At this point, we have approximately 30. Members who know of prospective members are encouraged to contact a lodge sales representatives and let them know.

The youth leader's report was given by Elise Koerner, since Diana Fuller was working on a project with the young people. Elise stated that the youth club is selling tickets for a Beanie Baby Raffle. Three Beanie Babies will be given away. The cost of the tickets is $1 each or six tickets for $5. Half of the proceeds will go towards adopting an angel for Christmas with the other half going in the youth club account.

President David stated that the lodge needs to find a community project. This will get our name out in the area. Anyone who has any idea, please let him know.

Supreme Lodge Funds Gala Elise Koerner advised all members that the Supreme Lodge in Temple donated $250 to the Pilot Point Educational Foundation Gala and had a sign displayed at the gala with SPJST and SPJST Lodge 5 printed on it.

President David stated that the lodge needs to have a fund raiser to help with the building fund. Laura Dolezalek suggested that we have a quilt raffle. This was discussed, and it was decided that different lodge families would embroider a quilt block, and that Mrs. Dolezalek would be in charge of having the quilt blocks

Wednesday, November 4, 1998—ViSTNIK/9 made into a quilt. Kathy Koerner and JoeIla David will be in charge of purchasing the blocks and thread and issuing them to families. President David suggested that we may also want to raffle a gun.

President David reminded everyone that each monthly lodge meeting would be held on the second Sunday of each month here at the St. Thomas CCD building in Pilot Point, Texas.

The prize drawing was held, and L.E. David won $35.

This month's auction item was brought by Floyd and Kathy Koerner, and it was purchased by Joella David for $65.

Gary Koerner volunteered to bring the next auction item.

No. 6, Cottonwood members attend District Three fall meeting Lodge

Hi! About 20 members of SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood, attended the District Three Fall Meeting at Lodge 92, Fort Worth on Sunday October 25th. Thanks to all who were able to attend and repesent our, lodge. There were a total of about 82 in attendance from various lodges.

Upon arrival, we enjoyed doughnuts or kolaches and a cup of coffee or a glass of juice. We had about an hour to socialize with others after registration before the meeting was called to order

by District President, Sister Holly Hubenak.

After a brief meeting with various speakers, we were adjourned for lunch.

We all got to enjoy some good barbecue with all the trimmings, along with homemade desserts. Mmmm, good!

Bet the ladies of Lodge 92 furnished all the desserts. Thanks!

The meeting resumed after lunch, beginning with the announcement of the winners of the Christmas Ornament Contest. The young people are very talented. They did a great job and presented some beautiful homemade ornaments.

By mid-afternoon,the meeting was being adjourned, but not before several people spoke up for hosting of the upcoming spring and fall meetings.

Wow, it was great to see such anticipation to hold future district meetings.

They are now scheduled until the fall of the year 2000. Thanks to Lodge 180, Burleson, for starting this off with wanting to host the fall 1999 District Three meeting. After Lodge 180 hosts the district meeting, Lodge 66, Waco will follow; Lodge 84, Dallas will host the Fall 2000 meeting.

The next District Three meeting will be held on April 25, 1999 at Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, Texas. See you there!

24, Cyclone reports on September, October meetings Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Lodge 24, Cyclone met September 14 at Flag Hall in Cyclone. President Brian Vanicek called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

Members observed a moment of silence in memory of Vlasta Davis who passed away recently. Our sincerest sympathy goes to the family of Sister Davis. We also send sympathy to the family of Amanda Young of Rogers.

Amanda was killed in a recent automobile accident in Austin. She was a beautiful young lady who attended many of our youth club's and lodge's activities.

She leaves behind her young son, Austin. May God bless him. The accident seriously injured local young men Josh Whatley and Nathan Hicks. To both of them, we send get-well wishes.

Our thoughts are with you.

The lodge welcomed new members Audrey and Allyson Thornton and Matthew Hoelscher. Welcome— Welcome— Welcome! Audrey and Allyson also joined our youth club.

Vice President Greger stated the Home Office will observe an open house on December 7 following the Temple Christmas Parade. Treasurer Penny Coots presented the September report of deposits and disbursements for the lodge. She also presented the bar report for Acting Bar Manager Terry Coots.

Youth Leader Rosamond Baker stated the youth club met October 11 with 19 members present. They planned an October 31 Halloween party and hayride. The youth club will sell breakfast burritos at the November 7 barbecue cook-off and sale day at Flag Hall. The club is also collecting money to donate to UNICEF. Hall Manager Bobby Hoelscher informed the members of upcoming hall rentals. He also complimented David Nauert on repairing the hall's air conditioning.

Barbecue Cook-Off Chairman Harold Vanicek reported on the Fifth Annual Lodge 24, Cyclone Barbecue Cookoff set for November 6 and 7. He asked the members for their assistance during the day. LaVerne Cabla and Pat Sebek reported on the sale day.

Lodge members complimented the District Two Officers for the very refreshing District Two Fall Meeting in September at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area. What a wonderful event filled with lots and lots of fun the whole afternoon!

Fraternalist of the Year President Vanicek then asked for nominations for Lodge 24's 1998 Fraternalist of the Year. Terry Coots and Brian Vanicek were nominated.

President Vanicek turned the meeting over to Vice President Greger during the balloting. Both Trustee Chairman Coots and President Vanicek have served the lodge diligently this past year and in previous years. We appreciate you both. Congratulations to Brother Vanicek, who is this year's Fraternalist of the Year. A true leader, he motivates the members and encourages them to get involved and make a

difference in the lodge and in the community. Brother Vanicek goes above and beyond the call of duty. He takes fhe initiative and follows through on lodge projects. Best wishes, always.

Lodge 47, Seaton elects officers at November meeting The rains have finally come. A little late, but we are not complaining yet.

After the hot dry summer, the cooler temperature along with the rain are welcome. We, in the Milam County area, got close to 10" of rain in October.

Lodge 49, Rowena member named National Merit Scholar semifinalist Lockhart High School Senior Nicholas Martin Walther has been named as a Semifinalist in the 44th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Nicholas is the son Wayne and Mary Lou Walther of Lockhart and the grandson of Elizabeth Walther of Rowena and a member of SPJST Lodge 49 in Rowena. He joins over 15,000 high school seniors in being named for this honor. All now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 Merit Scholarship awards worth over $28 million. The awards will be announced next spring.

Walther, like 1.2 million other students in over 20,000 United States high schools, entered the 1999 Merit Scholar Program as juniors by taking the 1997 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Those named as semifinalists are the highest scorers in each state and represent less than one percent of each state's high school graduating class.

The next step for Nicholas i s to fulfill requirements for advancement to Finalist standing, a prerequisite to consideration for a Merit Scholarship award. He also must have an outstanding high school academic record, be endorsed and recommended by Lockhart High School Principal Charles RED, and submit SAT scores that confirm his earlier qualifying test performance. Also, Walther and a Lockhart High School official mst complete a detailed scholarship application, which included a self-descriptive essay as well as information about his record of participation and leadership in school and community activities.

About 90 percent, or about 14,000, of the semifinalists are expected to qualify to meet the high standards required to become finalists. Three types of Merit Scholarship awards will be offered in 1999. Every finalist will be considered for one of 2,400 National Merit $2,000 scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. In additon, 1,200 corporatesponsored and 4,000 college-sponsored Merit Scholarships will be awarded. The majority of 1999 Merit Scholar awardees will be announced in April or May. President Pechal thanked the men that came out to help put in the beverage cooler box that was purchased several months ago. Also, thanks to the men who came to cut down a tree that the wind had blown over and was leaning dangerously.

Duties were assigned to members at the John Deer Gator fund raiser. There are still tickets available. Call Gladys Marek at 254-773-3914 or call any lodge member. We have one at home and we wonder how we ever did without it!

FAC Dorothy Pechal had envelopes for the pennies drive for the scholarship fund at the Supreme Lodge. This drive started October 1 and will end December 31.

District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky explained to the members about rebates to the lodge. He also informed us about interest on mortgage loans.

All Chairpersons gave satisfactory reports. James Skrabanek gave the audit report.

Lodge 47 will make more improvements to beautify our hall. Members volunteered to donate trees to plant in the hack acreage of the hall. Willie Kohutek is in charge of the project and will have a report on prices and how many trees we can plant in the December meeting.

James Skrabanek volunteered to be chairman of the cooking of turkeys for the Christmas dinner Sunday, December 13. Willie and Adeline Kohutek volunteered to bring supplies for the dinner. The Christmas dinner was discussed in length. This year, we will have sausage as well as turkeys, thanks to James Skrabanek.

Youth Leader, Donna Baca, gave her report. There were 12 members and 5 adults present. They also had election of officers. The youth will have a program at the Christmas Party December 13. I am sure Santa Claus will come also to pay us a visit.

48, Beyersville tarok tournament set for November 21 Lodge

The Fourth Annual PokornyPolanka Tarok Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 21, 1998 at SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville, Texas.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and play begins at 9:15 a.m.

Registration fee is $15 per person and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes. There will be six rounds of play. We have decided to add a new twist to the tournament this year.

Prizes will be awarded as usual to the top winners plus we will award ten cents a chip in increments of 10 chips.

Thus, if you have a score of 769 at the end of the day, you would have 160 chips to the good times ten cents; which would give you $16.

Playing rules are similar to SPJST rules except for calling "Povinost."

You can pass povinost, but if you go povinost, you cannot pay off. You draw yourself you play it.

Please pre-register by November 18 to help us estimate food supply; however, late entries are still welcome.

54, West hosts November 15 fund raiser at Lone Star Hall Lodge

Lodge 54, West and Sokol West are holding a joint fund raiser on November 15 at Lone Star Hall. All proceeds will be used toward improvements to be made to the hall.

There will be a fried and baked chicken dinner with all the trimmings.

Large plates are $5; small plates are $4; and tot's plates are $1.50. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. Plates to go will be available. Members are requested to bring pastries.

79, Corpus Christi reports on member, lodge activities Lodge

At our Lodge 79 monthly meeting, Jerry Sijansky was elected our "Fraternalist of the Year." He is a very deserving choice — congratulations, Brother Jerry.

I could not make the meeting, as I was recuperating from a bad bout with pneumonia. I am on the road to recovery, thank God. This week is being proclaimed "Czech Heritage Week" in Corpus Christi.

At a recent Sokol meeting, Jerry Sijansky was commissioned a Kentucky-Colonel. Anna Marie Moss, Frank Sacky and Jerry Elzner were awarded "Tennessee Ambassadors of Goodwill" for their fraternal work.

At the Kerr County Fair on October 9 and 10, three of our members won ribbons. Agnes Burge won first in canned peaches and first in canned beets. Sean McRae won first in potted plants - ivy and sixth in chicken eggs.

Steven McRae won second in chicken eggs. Congratulations to all. Sean and Steven are Agnes's grandsons.

Our next meeting will be November 15 . At this meeting, we will have the traditional Thanksgiving meal, which will be catered. We will eat at 12:30 p.m. We hope to have a humorist to entertain us while we eat. To ensure

88, Houston to award scholarships to members in '99 Lodge

Lodge 88, Houston will be awarding scholarships for the 1999 school year.

Application forms can now be picked up at the lodge office at 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas 77008 and must be postmarked by December 31, 1998.

To qualify, a student must be an active member of Lodge 88 (paying local lodge dues) for a period of at least two years and file an application during their senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of 1999.

I wish I could write the whole beautiful story of Gary and Elizabeth Blahuta finally realizing their dream of nine years by adopting pretty Megan Levi of China. Dear Members and Friends: I want to thank everyone that sent the nice get well cards. My past letter said that I would be in the hospital five days, but that was not correct. After the knee replacement, I had to stay in rehab for three weeks. So in all, it has been 30 days. I was sorry to miss our regular lodge meeting, but I understand it all went well.

Mary Ann Krivanek, with the help of Kenneth, had a wonderful meal.

I also had to miss the District Three meeting. This was held at Lodge 92.

Many items were brought up and discussed. It was nice that our past District Three Director was able to attend the meeting as several weeks ago, he had a stroke while in Minnesota. Sid, we wish you a speedy recovery back to good health, and we thank you for having done such a good job for the SPJST. Brother Johnnie Krizan is doing a great job as the new District Three Director.

The next lodge meeting will be November 8 starting at 2 p.m. This will be the election of officers and also the appointment of the different committees.

Lodge 133, San Antonio field trip to SPJST Museum November 22 We will not be having a regular monthly meeting on Sunday, November 15th due to the trip that we have planned to the SPJST Museum.

We will be chartering a bus (at no cost to lodge members) to Temple on Sunday, November 22nd. We will be departing from McCrelles Mall (north parking lot near Bealls) at 8 a.m. We will stop and have lunch and then tour the museum at 1:30 p.m. We expect to return at approximately 6 p.m.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, Resolution Committee of Lodge No,. 73 in Seymour, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, ANNA ELIZABETH FOJTIK, who passed away on October 11, 1998 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, at the age of 72. She was born in Gilliland, Texas on July 21, 1926, the daughter of Joe and Anna Tomanek. She graduated from Gilliland High School.

On January 29, 1948, in Gilliland, Texas, she was united in marriage to Oldrick Fojtik, her beloved husband of 43 years who preceded her in death on February 11, 1991.

Mrs. Fojtik was a homemaker and a devoted mother and grandmother.

Funeral services for Mrs. Fojtik

were held at 2 p.m. on October 15, 1998 at the graveside in Truscott Cemetery, Truscott, Texas, with Mr. Gene McCardy officiating.

Mrs. Fojtik is survived by two daughters, Anna Duckworth and husband, Stan of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma; and Linda Redwine and husband, Jimmy of Optima, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Rachael, Job, and Lela Redwine; one brother, Edmond Tomanek and wife, Geraldine of Truscott, Texas; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oldrick Fojtik; her parents, Joe and Anna Tomanek; and five brothers, Charlie, Jerry, Victor, Jim and Lumir Tomanek.

Louise Schwartz Hrncir of Texarkana, Texas, and formerly of San Angelo, died peacefully at home with her family around her in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, on Friday, October 23, 1998 at the age of 93 years.

She was a member of Lodge 160, San Angelo.

She was the wife of the late George Hrncir and a former San Angelo resident. Louise was the dearly loved mother of Isabelle Hrncir Brymer of Ancaster, Ontario, and Betty Hrncir Hlavinka and son-in-law, Charles Hlavinka of Texarkana, Texas. She delighted in her grandchildren, Dr. Chris Brymer and his wife, Dr. Susan Meakin Brymer, of London, Ontario; Lisa Brymer Didero and her husband,

David Didero of Brantford, Ontario; David Hlavinka and his wife, Michelle; Mark Hlavinka and his wife, Marcie, of Texarkana; and Mary Williams and her husband, Dr. Jeff Williams of Bridgeport Texas; and her great-grandchildren, Brennan, Ashlyn, Matthew, Rachel and Sarah Louise.

Rosary service was at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, October 27, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 28 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Wall, officiated by Father Louis Moeller. Burial followed in St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery.

President Mayfield invited Louis Hanus to say a few words. Mr. Hanus said we needed to get a petition started so we can get as many signatures so we can send them to our legislators in order to try to get the ad valorem tax repealed, not only for our lodge, but for all fraternal organizations. Thank you, Mr. Hanus, for the information about the ad valorem tax; it was very informative and interesting.

President Mayfield also invited Marie Stayton to say a few words.

Marie thanked us for our continued support we give to the youth and told us to keep supporting them like we have in the past.

Robert told everyone that it is time to elect three members from the floor to be on the Nominating Committee.

The three members elected were Jimmy Weidig, Hilda Wiederhold and Lillia Mae Peter.

Next Meeting November 18 President Mayfield reminded everyone that due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, our next meeting dates are moved up a week. The Executive meeting will be November 4th and the regular meeting is November 18th.

Garden Club Christmas Boutique coming November 14 Taylor

The Taylor Garden Club presents its 26th annual Christmas Boutique on Saturday, November 14 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday, November 15 from 12 noon until 4 p.m. The event will be held at the Taylor High School Student Center on Highway 95 North at Mallard Lane in Taylor. Make plans to stay with us after the volleyball tournament for an entire night filled with lots of excitement, fun, food and door prizes.

What a show! The SPJST was well-represented at 1998 Youth Spectacular held October 24 in conjunction with the 98th Annual Texas Fraternal Congress at the Omni Southpark Hotel in Austin, Texas.

Groups representing the KJZT, KJT and the Order of the Sons of Hermann also performed.

State King Jonathon Haag of Lodge 185, New Braunfels and State Queen Jennifer Block of Lodge 160, San Angelo presented their award-winning competition speeches. Jamie Lyn Novak of Lodge 84, Dallas presented a lively tap dance to "That's Dancing;" Sarah Yezak of Lodge 9, Snook sang "Talk To Me;" and Angela Mooney of Lodge 88, Houston tap danced to "The Shake."

The young dancers representing Lodge 88, Houston brought their incredible light show "Bat Dance."

Performers were Kristen Bender, Krystle Bender, Deanna Joseph, Kimberly Joseph, Angela Mooney, Jocelyn Shaw, and Natalie Zalesky.

From Lodge 84, Dallas came the inspiring "What If" skit. Actors were Mandy Faraizl, Christine Nieva, Jamie Lyn Novak, J.J. Novak, Jarod Olds, Marchele Olds, Leslie Sims, and Rusty Sims.

Then, the scrapbook and posters winners were announced. SPJST scrapbooks and posters competed with

The members of the youth club made dancing scarecrows and dancing apples as their fall project to hang in the nursing home. Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club collecting for November charities Dear Readers, The Snook Youth Club had their monthly meeting on October 7. The meeting was well attended. We had pumpkins and other vegetables that we decorated for our craft. They were cute.

We went over old and new business.

Our charities for the month of November are to bring a bag of fruit (or 12 fruit per family) for elderly, make and deliver fruit bags, bring coats or winter clothing, make cards for people in the community and bring General Mills Box Tops for school.

After the meeting Mr. Schubert spoke to us about chairs that fit to comfort your backs.

Thanks to our honorary grandparents for the Halloween cookies.

Our next meeting will be on November 4 at 6:30.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club reports on October meeting Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club had their monthly meeting on October 7th

Scholarship/Grant Program assists young members with expenses

O

ne of the benefits that the SPJST makes available to its members is a competitive scholarship program. The Scholarship/ Grant Program is meant to encourage and assist younger members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals.

SPJST General Scholarships were established in 1982 for all SPJST members. General Scholarships are funded by the Supreme Lodge and voluntary contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Leadership Grants were established in 1996 for active youth club members and are funded solely through allocations by the Supreme Lodge.

The Application Process Applicants must have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for one year and hold an active certificate for the duration of the scholarship or grant. Likewise, recipients must enter college the fall term following the announcement of their award.

All SPJST scholarship/grant recip ients must attend college or technical school on a full-time basis and carry a normal academic load without interruption and in agreement with the college calendar. Their personal and academic standards must remain satisfactory to the college and to the committee.

CZECH HERITAGE AND CULTURE

Prague Arts Council promotes November 20 screening of "Marian" at Museum of Fine Arts The Prague Arts Council of the Czech Cultural Center of Houston invites your attendance to a screening of the Czech film, Marian, on November 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas.

Produced in the Czech Republic and France in 1996, the film takes place outside Prague before the Velvet Revolution of the late 1980s and tells the story of a gypsy boy who falls victim to prejudices against his culture.

Unable to speak Czech, he is branded a troublemaker and spends a lifetime in captivity — first in an orphanage and later in various penal institutions.

Admission is $5. Several other Czech films will be shown at the Museum in March of 1999. Watch for details.

The mission of the Prague Arts Council is to present exhibits of paintings, sculptings, photograph, ceramic art, film festivals, concerts of individual artists and groups, and dance programs.

The Council's activities are expected to vary greatly and will rely on the help and support of other CCC members with contrasting interests and talents.

The Council is committed to an initial 1998-1999 season to involve as many of CCC's members in each activity as possible. The 1999-2000 season is now open for program suggestions. For information on joining the Prague Arts Council, please call Robert Dvorak at (281) 342-1312.

Runnels, Concho and

Tom Green Counties CHS to meet November 15 The Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society will hold its last quarterly meeting Sunday, November 15, 1998 in the SPJST Hall in Rowena. A holiday meal of smoked turkey and ham will be served at 1 p.m. Members are asked to bring side dishes of vegetables, salads and desserts.

The business meeting will start at 2 p.m. Officers will be elected as well as the Directors for 1999. Local and state dues will be collected. These dues will entitle members to receive the State Czech Heritage publication, Cesky Hlas and the new state membership roster, which will be mailed in March.

Local Chapter activities this year included hosting the State Czech Heritage Society meeting in Rowena on March 21 and also participating in

the Centennial Celebration of Rowena July 4, 1998. The Czech float received a plaque for having the best music in the parade.

President Louis Kokes announced an invitation to all members, their families and those interested in the organization.

Burleson County

Czech Heritage Museum elects 1999 officers On October 20, 1998, the Burleson County Czech Museum met for their regular meeting at Dave and Jerry's Beverage Barn on the Presidential Corridor. Even with the clean-up work form the tornado, and the rain, the meeting was well attended.

BCCHM has two new members who joined October 20th.

Reports were given by President George Hlavinka, opening the meeting with the welcome and agenda. Annie Polasek, Secretary, read the minutes for the September 15th meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Daniel Junek reported that the BCCHM is still solvent, and everything on the Historic Site is paid for.

Thanks to the many donors for cash, to Carolyn Varva for the gallons of expensive paint, to George Hlavinka, Anton Haisler and crew for their labor.

As George pointed out, their labor has saved the museum at least $50,000.

The care and know-how to preserve the antiquity of the house requires hours and hours of hand work and of course, for all who have completed construction on a home, know that the finishing up takes or seems to take forever! The Renovations Committee is investigating and planning the interior.

There is still much to do, and BCCHM needs your support!

Dr. Johanna Elliott presented the report to make George Hlavinka, Museum Curator for life and his `helper,' Shirley Hlavinka. The members voted unanimously for George Hlavinka to always hold the office of Founder and Curator of BCCHM. The 1999 officers are:
