"Education is the key. It opens our minds and our spirit and enables us to dream and have those dreams come true for ourselves and others." —Cindy Kovar SPJST Member, Scholarship Recipient and Scholarship Contributor

Cindy Kovar, a member of SPJST Lodge 174, Rockdale, was raised in the SPJST. She attended youth club meetings, camps and participated in royalty contests and Youth Achievement Days. The SPJST runs deep through her family. Cindy's

par-

ents, Zephyr and Daniel Marek; paternal grandmother, Dolfina Marek Chovanec; maternal grandparents, Rosemary and Chris Spence; and great-grandparents, Otto and Matilda Hanus have all enjoyed active membership in the SPJST. In 1996, Cindy was Grand Prize Winner in the prestigious Sixth. Annual Newman's Own and Good Housekeeping Recipe Contest. Cindy contributed her Cindy Kovar winning check of $55,000 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of

her great-grandfather Otto Hanus, the developer and first curator of the SPJST Museum. The first Otto Hanus scholarship recipients in 1998 were: Brian Wisnoski of Lodge 142, Houston; Angie Bettge of Lodge 32, Victoria; Shanna Peschel of Lodge 1, Fayetteville; and Brandi Caldwell of Lodge 66, Waco. A few days ago, I met with Cindy and asked if she would be our 1998 spokesperson for the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. In the spirit of fraternalism, she readily agreed. Cindy is a special person. You see it in her smile and sparkling eyes. She listens and responds carefully. She is compassionate, determined and friendly. She also has a great sense of humor

and was recently awarded the honorable title of one of the "Ten Top Most Kissable Lips" in Brazos County! Cindy volunteers for the annual Brazos Valley Hospice fund raiser. With a decorator's touch, Cindy helps to create a beautiful atmosphere for the Hospice Foundation fund raising dinner. Cindy has worked her way through two college degrees. She holds an Associates Degree in Interior Design from Bauder College and recently graduated from Texas A&M with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology. Cindy and her husband, Mike, live in College Station, Texas. Congratulations are in order for the couple as they are expecting the first addition to their 100 Percent SPJST Family in March!
