Recently crowned 1998-99 SPJST State Royalty participated in the September 5 Wesffest parade and cultural program. Pictured above, District Four Director Stanley Broz, in the driver's seat, and Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar chauffeur King Jonathan Haag of Lodge 185, New Braunfels and Queen Jennifer Block of Lodge 160, San Angelo in a white convertible, courtesy of Westside Motors of Hillsboro. Duke Chase Jaroszewski and Duchess Rachel Schwartz marched in front of the car, carrying the SPJST banner. Afterwards, the young people and their families visited the fairgrounds where they enjoyed the various ethnic exhibits and performances and a warm welcome during their introduction at the cultural amphitheater. The next royalty appearance is September 25 at the Comal County Fair parade. They will also appear at the Texas Fraternal Congress in Austin on October 24.

New State Youth Director Collecting Ideas for SPJST's Twenty-First Century Youth Program Dear Members, Greetings! I am enjoying my new position as SPJST State Youth Director.

ages 14 and over to join in the fun and participate in the SPJST State Volleyball Tournament on November 14 in Bruceville-Eddy.

Supreme Lodge Expresses Appreciation to Retiring Director Andrew Vavra

Lodge 73, Seymour Hosts District Four Fur Day September 26 Everyone is invited to attend the District Four Fun Day on September 26, 1998, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 200 East Reiman in Seymour. It is one block east of L&M Ford Dealership.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. with a baked goods contest from 11:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Anyone can enter cakes, pies, and kolaches.

SPJST Supreme Lodge members honored past District One Director Andrew Vavra recently with a reception and dinner in his honor. "For eleven years, I have had the honor and privilege to serve the members of District One . . . It has been both a memorable and rewarding experience," said Brother Vavra, who retired from his directorship in May. Family members in attendance included Brother Vavra's wife, Lola and his two daughters, Florence Wilder and Barbara Miller. The Vavra's also have two sons, Andy, Jr. and Alvin and five grandchildren. Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville members turn out for annual Family Day Dear Members, Our lodge held its annual Family Day on Sunday, August 9, 1998 at the American Legion Hall with a good attendance. The activities bean at 11 a.m. with a social hour. Greeters at the door were Margaret and Albert Smotek. Members and their families and guests enjoyed refreshments, participating in the youth cake walk and prize drawing and viewing the youth entries from the District Six and SPJST State Youth Achievement Days.

At noon, Lodge 4 President Joe Siptak welcomed everyone. Adolf Motal, a member of Lodge 32, Victoria, gave the meal blessing. A delicious catered meal of barbecue brisket and sausage, buttered potatoes, green beans, slaw and peaches was served. The many desserts brought by the members were also enjoyed.

A short meeting followed. The colors were posted, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Elizabeth Vahalik and Christopher Vanek. A moment of silence was held for our deceased members.

President Siptak then introduced our guests: District Six Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta, State Field Manager Gene McBride and his wife, Frances and District Five and Six State Field Manager Jim Wiest and his wife, Susie. Also introduced was one of of our SPJST scholarship winners, Jeff Holly and his parents, Bobby and Dolores Holly. Scholarship winner James Rainosek was unable to attend.

Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Lillie Balusek recognized our 50-year members who were present: William B. Treptow, Hilmer Galetka and Frank E. Trojcak.

They were presented their pins and congratulated on their achievement. Each also received a boutonniere made by Treasurer Helen Zabransky. Fifty-year members unable to attend were: Vivian Belicek, Ralph Wayne Adams, Franklin P. John, Jr. and Mary Mae Kolbe.

It was decided to change the September meeting date to the fourth Sunday in September due to the Vsetin Brethren Church picnic on our regular meeting date.

Youth Leader Shirley Kalmus reported on the youth club activities and congratulated all of the winners who participated in the District Six and SPJST

Lodge 6, Cottonwood members enjoy Czech

100 Percent SPJST Members of Lodge 4, Hallettsville are proud to add yet another 100 Percent SPJST Family to their roster.

They are Doye and Charlotte Bethke and their daughter, Kasi Victoria, who turned one on the Fourth of July. Doye is an electrician and Charlotte, teaches pre-school.

State Youth Achievement Day contests.

She also recognized Adam Siptak and Elizabeth Vahalik for having perfect attendance at the youth club meetings for 1997-1998. The youth had a short program featuring the second place state senior group of Nicholas Vahalik and Bryan Richardson, who performed "Who's on First?" and junior talent of Elizabeth Vahalik and Christopher Vanek who sang a Czech song.

Past SPJST State Queen Elizabeth Wagner thanked the lodge and everyone who helped make the year so memorable and fun. The state royalty appeared in several parades and made special appearances. As president of the Youth Club, Elizabeth presented Patsy Zabransky with a mounted appreciation certificate for helping to publicize the achievements and activities of the youth club.

Each guest then spoke briefly to the members.

Annie Vahalik reported on the proposed SPJST Dance Class in Hallettsville. Anyone interested in the dance class should contact Annie for more information.

Door prizes were then awarded to Cameron Zak, David Wagner, Selma Grones, Tynan Zak, Viola Scheffer, Trevor Scott, Bobby Holly, Ian Voskamp, Frances Urban, Sarah Siptak, Victoria Orsak, Elsie Dusek, Blake Appelt, Johnnie Zak, Jim Appelt, Mary Matula, Patsy Zabransky, Valeria Motal, Albert Smotek, Helen Zabransky, Elsie Mascheck, Agnes Janak, Marilyn Strauss and Tyler Treptow. Many thanks to everyone who donated door prizes along with the lodge.

The youth club prize drawing winners were: Sarah Siptak, Bobby Holly, John Richardson, Victoria Orsak, Johnnie Zak, Patsy Kahanek, Dolores Holly, Jeff Appelt and Tramer Woytek.

The remainder of the afternoon was spent visiting and playing bingo sponsored by the youth club. The day was enjoyed by all who attended.

Hi! On Sunday afternoon, September 13th, our meeting was called to order by Brother Robert Dobecka, President. Youth club members led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We had a nice crowd present at our meeting. Sister Georgie Soukup reported that there were 29 members and one guest present, namely Freddie Gerik.

The minutes from our last meeting were read by Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, our Secretary, which were approved as read. She also read the correspondence that had been received.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer, gave her report, which was also approved as read. She also presented the youth club report. She reported that the young people and their helpers baked 125 dozen kolaches for the Westfest held Labor Day weekend.

They also participated in the Westfest parade and they worked at the Lodge 6, Cottonwood booth at the Westfest.

Since it was Grandparents Day on the day of our meeting, the youth club prepared and served our meal for the day.

WOW! It was great. We all enjoyed roast, sausage, gravy, potato casserole, salad, corn, beans, homemade bread and the desserts that the ladies brought.

Mmmm, good!

Brother Al Soukup, Vice President, thanked all of the people who helped out in any way out at the Westfest. He reported that all did a great job.

Brother Robert Dobecka agreed and expressed his appreciation. Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Lydia Dobecka, also thanked everyone who helped out. She said that everyone she called for assistance showed up and that their help was appreciated very much. Sister Dobecka then suggested that the lodge have an appreciation dinner for everyone who volunteered their services during the year for our lodge.

Members voted to have a dinner at Heitmiller's Steak House, tentatively set for Sunday, October 18th, starting at 4 p.m. with social and door prizes, followed by dinner at 5 p.m.

Sister Hattie Kaska, Sunshine Committee Chairman, reported that no get well cards had been sent; however, we learned that day that Christine Matus was sick and we missed her at our meeting. We hope you get to feeling much better real soon. Sister Hattie reported sending a sympathy card to Mr. and Mrs. Cyrill Svrcek and family.

Brother George Straten was then asked to present his report. He reported the hall bookings for the month. He also reported on two new members, amounting to five juvenile and two adult members over the past two months. New adult members are Troy Willenborg and Gregory Picha. The juvenile members are Joseph Christopher Krizan, Kierston Uptmore, Ryan Alexander, Katie Alexander and Michael Moore. We look forward to seeing our new members at our meetings, which are usually held the first Sunday of each month.

B.J. Hlavaty, sales representative, reported the the District Three meeting

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, September 23, 1998 would be held October 25th at Lodge 92, Fort Worth. He also mentioned that if you bring two canned, goods, $2 will be deducted from the cost of your meal ticket. Hey, B.J. did I spell your name correctly? But then, 1 almost culled you "C.J ." and had to correct it because that is what I had written in my notes?

It then came time for Brother Dobecka to introduce our guest speaker, Freddie Gerik, who presented the topic "Being Czech," with the help of his lovely wife, Nita. It was very interesting, but I'm not of the same ancestry and I don't think I can write very much about his excellent speech. Still, my husband, Ray, informed Mr. Gerik that he is a "Perezcek" and does speak the language some. I did learn that Brother Cyrril "Svrcek" is a "cricket" or something like that. I also learned that Mr. Gerik was not sure what "Dobecka" meant, but that he could break it down into two words. He said that "do" is "two" and that "becku" is "barrel."

You would have to know Brother Dobecka to enjoy that one. Oh well, so much on my Czech lesson that day.

We sure enjoyed Mr. Gerik's presentation and the books he brought about Czech history and about the Czechs' immigration to the United States. Nita Gerik enjoys genealogy and will be glad to assist anyone who may be interested in finding some of their family.

Those in attendance with birthdays for the month were Sisters Stella Perez and Irene Schiemenz and Brother Robert Schiemenz. A "Happy Birthday" to all who have birthdays in September. Door prizes were then awarded with Brother Al Soukup winning the $5 door prize. Names were then drawn to award the progressive door prizes. The following names were drawn: Terry Hykel, Roselea Urbish, and Richard Machac. None were present.

The meeting was then adjourned until October 4 when the meeting will be an hour later than usual at 3 p.m.

And guess who the chefs will be! If any of you has suggestions for the next meal, let me know, because Ray Perez and I will be furnishing the next meal.

Lodge 29, Taylor reports on September meeting Lodge 29, Taylor held its monthly meeting on Sunday, September 13 at 4 p.m. with President Ronnie Rieger presiding. Cathy Basil read the roll call of officers and read the minutes. Michael Kaiser gave the Treasurer's report and the Property Committee report. New members for our lodge are: Lisa A. Heselmeyer of Taylor and Sherry Louise Beyer of Austin.

The New Year's Eve dance was discussed. the The tickets for the dance will be $8 a person. Music will be by Country Road 354 of Granger.

Everyone is invited to come out.

The membership elected Loretta Tate to'be the new treasurer to fill the position that was held by Janet Kaiser.

Thanks, Janet, for doing a great job.

There was discussion about signs in front of the hall and also a sign to be placed by the road.

The lodge will be hosting the tarok tournament on September 26. We need volunteers for Friday at about 6 p.m. and also Saturday morning about 7 a.m. Members are asked to bring desserts for the noon meal.

The next meeting will be held on October 11 at 4 p.m. The meeting was adjourned.

47, Seaton hosts SPJST Statewide Barbecue Cookoff October 3 at Star Hall Lodge

What a beautiful day to have a meeting — it rained. We have needed the rain so badly and have been praying for it to come for so long. Although the crops are all gathered in this area and most of the fields are plowed, the

ground is soaking up ever drop of water.

President Pechal called the meeting tio order promptly at 2 p.m. Flagbearers Rachel Baca, Jessica Kirby and Patrick Greger brought the flags in and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Anna Shenkir and Theresa Stewart. May they rest in Eternal Peace.

Guests welcomed were State Field Representative Keith Gatewood, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz and Helen McFarland.

Roll call of officers and board members showed all present. Two sales representatives were absent.

Minutes were read by Secretary Adeline Kohutek and were approved as read.

Correspondence consisted of a letter from the American Czech Culture Society, a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar asking for donations to the four charities the SPJST is sponsoring and information about the volleyball tournament scheduled for November 14 at BrucevilleEddy High School gym.

The Investigating Committee approved new members: Leon Victor Jezek, Sr., Nikki McKee Lopez, Marilyn K. Cox, Taryn Danielle Lindemann, Diana Lynn Bartek, David Jerome Nicholson, F.E. Hejl, Jr., Donald E. Pisar, Betty Hall Pisar and Victoria Marie Smith.

Joyce Skrabanek, Resolution Committee member, had sent get well cards to Jane Chandler, who is recovering in St. Edwards Rehab Hospital after a very bad car accident. Edward Mihatsch has also been in the hospital.

We wish everyone a speedy recovery.

All chairpersons gave satisfactory reports.

Keith Gatewood and Barbara Rosenkranz, from the Home Office, were invited to say a few words. Keith elaborated on the membership drive being planned for November 8. Each member is asked to bring a prospective member to this meeting. There will be more details about this next month.

Barbara Rosenkranz spoke of the EIEIO concept: E - Educate people for personal growth and, advantages of being an SPJST member I - Imagination for new ideas.

A couple of games were played much to the amusement of the members present at the meeting. These are just a few of the ideas that she presented.

Coming Events October 2 and 3 is the SPJST Statewide Barbecue Cookoff at Lodge 47. Barbecuers from all over the state are expected to participate.

Hamburgers and french fries will be available Friday night and for the noon meal Saturday. There will be music going on Friday night for everyone's entertainment. The Lodge 47 Youth Club will be selling breakfast tacos Saturday morning starting at 7 a.m. A

Wednesday, September 23, 1998—ViSTNIK/7 plus - Jerry Wayne Haisler's band will be playing for the dance Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. This sounds like a fun-filled weekend and everyone is invited to come to Seaton Star Hall on Highway 53 and join in the fun.

Another activity coming up at Seaton Star is the Gator fund raiser November 21. Second prize is patio furniture. Tickets are now available at $74 each. For tickets, call Gladys Marek or any Lodge 47 officer or member. Meal and refreshments included.

Lodge 47 is fixing to get a "facelift." The members voted to put vinyl siding on the exterior of the building. This will beautify our building even more. Work will start when the weather fairs off.

The Fourth Annual PokornyPolanka Tarok Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 21, 1998 at SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville, Texas.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and play begins at 9:15 a.m.

Registration fee is $15 per person r and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes. There will be six rounds of play.

We have decided to add a new twist to the tournament this year.

Prizes will be awarded as usual to the top win- \■.. ners plus we will award ten cents a chip in increments of 10 chips. Thus, if you have a score of 769 at the end of the day, you would have 160 chips to the good times ten cents; which would give you $16.

Playing rules are similar to SPJST rules except for calling "Povinost."

You can pass povinost, but if you go povinost, you cannot pay off. You draw yourself you play it.

Tarok Tournament in conjunction with Czech Heritage Week Lodge 49, Rowena will host a tarok tournament on October 24 at the lodge hall in Rowena. Worth, and especially Helen and Albert Kubala for hosting another great tournament day. Helen and Albert have been supporting the game of Taroks and Tarok tournaments across the state since the conception of the SPJST Tarok Tournaments. There is rarely a tournament in any part of the state which is not attended by Helen and Albert and the group of Ft. Worth players.

A special thanks to Agnes Reznicek for her sweet remembrance of Mrs. Irma Klinkovsky and myself. We really appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Also, bless her heart, Evelyn Spacek is a wonderful volunteer to work with during registration and score keeping.

We had plenty of reserve players for the day, that was a nice change.

Helen and Albert are the funniest and friendliest people, and make the day super-enjoyable. The lunch and sweets for dessert and breakfast are always incomparable and the volunteers ready to step forward and help out. Thanks to Carl Zich for getting the winners posted in the Vestnik so promptly through his lodge letters.

Carlis a great guy and his letters are always interesting to read. My van companions for the day were Frank and Irma Klinkovsky and Aleen Gaida and Lydia Jansen. We traveled along engrossed in conversation so the trip didn't seem to take long at all.

Fred Havlak of Rowena, stood up at break and challenged the Tarok players to come to Rowena, Texas on October 24th and play Taroks the way itis ireally supposed to be playedi. There were many fraternal groans and fraternal chuckles at that comment!

The top eight tournament winners are, in the following order: Jason Brezina, 1st place with 140 avg., V.J. Hajda, 2nd place with 136 avg., J.J. Kubala 3rd place with 132.33 avg., Joella Kubala 4th place with 131 avg., Ed Scaff 5th place with 124 avg., Carolyn Coufal 6th place with 123.5 avg., Helen Kubala 7th place with 122.83 avg. and Linda Gaas 8th place with 118.83 avg.

Top round winners of the day were: Round one, Alton Demel, 242 points. Round two, J.J. Kubala, 212 points. Round three, Jason Brezina, 200 points. Round four, Jason Brezina again with 173 points.

Round five, Jerry Brezina 203 points and in Round six, Professor Taroks (David Kucera) blew everybody Bout of the wateri with a 308 point score.

First time I've seen a 300 point score in a round during tournament play.

God bless those who sat at his table during round six. David left only 92 points to split between the other three players.

The meeting was called to order by President Kathy Treffel. We had 28 members present.

Secretary Dona Clooney read the minutes from the August meeting.

They were approved as read. She also read a thank you note from Georgia Buchanan, thanking the club for remembering her son when he was ill.

Treasurer Ellen Miculka gave her report. It was approved.

Our Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut gave her report. She thanked Bessie Dewer for handling her position when she was ill. Mary sent get well cards to Georgie Buchanan, Edna Froelich, Edna Wehring, Josephine Pumilia, Era Richards and Julie Kinnoman.

Estelle Kelly is ill. Please pray for her. Almeida Bravanec is also sick with a cold. Hope these ladies are doing better.

The Vice President asked for any report on new grand or great-grandchildren. Alice Bily has a new greatgrandchild. He was born to Angie and Danny Bily on August 12. They named him Von Miroslov.

The Men's Club is also going to the dog races on Friday, November 6th and has asked the Birthday Club to attend.

Czech Day is on October 25th. We will be having roast pork, sausage and sauerkraut. Pastries will be furnished by the Birthday Club. There will be a King and Queen crowned on theat day also. The couple must be wearing a Czech costume. There will be a kolache bake-off, orchestra and folk dances. Sounds like a fun day.

Helen Hegwood asked for donations to the silent auction for the Youth Club on Czech Day. This is to help pay for their dance instructor, so bring whatever you can for this project.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth grandparents honored September meeting Dear Members and Friends, Our lodge meeting on September 13 was well attended. As always, the youth club lead the members with the Pledge of Allegiance. There were nine or ten young people accompanied by their leader, Gale Fuller. The youth club members then recited the Beatitudes for Friends of the Aged for the grandparents. We thank the young people for this beautiful poem All officers gave good reports. The By-Laws Committee reported that the local by-laws needed to be upgraded.

There was discussion on several of the items and it seems that all were passed.

The final reading will be at the October meeting.

President Kubala appointed the committee for selecting the lodge fraternalist of the year. Committee members are Mary Ann Krivanek, Carl W. Zich and Helen Kubala. We will select the person who has done the most fraternal work for the lodge and other organizations.

With deep regret, we have received notice that Brother Frank Oujesky passed away. Frank was the husband of Helen (Matusevich) Oujesky. Frank passed away in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 83. The rosary and mass were at the Saint Thomas Catholic Church in Fort Worth and burial will as at Mount Olivet Cemetery on September 15, 1998. Frank is survived by his wife of 46 years, Helen Oujesky; sons, Michael, David and Christopher; sisters, Helen Hodges, Josie Kubala, Mary Mouton; and several nieces and nephews.

Congratulations to Cheryl Hubenak for being selected the teacher of the year. Cheryl teaches at the Cross Timbers Middle School in the Grapevine and Colleyville School District. Cheryl and Gordon Hubenak

are both involved in the education of young people.

Glad that the Texas coast received lots of rain but sorry to hear of the damage it did. Here in the central part of Texas, it rained for four days. We only received about one-half inch of rain — others may have received a little more; still, we are thankful that we got that amount.

The next letter will be about our Czech Heritage Day and how it turned out.

We were glad to have State Field Representative Jerry Kucera visit our lodge and make a nice presentation.

He said that we needed just a few more members to be able to receive the "Gold Award." So, you sales representatives get busy. We know that you can do it.

The Joke A banker and two of his customers went fishing in a small row boat. A heavy squall came upon them and swamped the boat. Two of the men could swim, but the banker couldn't.

Dan's job is with ARCO and has him working in Mozambique, Africa at this time.

Anna Marie Moss reported that our membership now stands at 47 with 27 present.

She also informed us that Marcellina Mokry had fallen and hurt her hip. However, willing to fulfill her obligation as a hostess, she graciously sent a lovely cake and strudel for us to enjoy! Thanks, Marcellina, and get well soon!

Anna Marie made a special request of the members: Since recycling is important to most of us, she suggested that we use only the designated trash cans — especially using the ones with smaller plastic bags for small amounts of trash. (We also recycle aluminum cans.)

Ladies honored this month with the "Happy Birthday" song were Donna Havranek and Pauline Novosad as well as guest Myles Marek.

Door prizes were donated by Frances Kosarek, Judy Majek, Marcellina Mokry, Carrie Veselka and Dorothy McCoy and were won by Mary Elzner, Albertina Oakes, Carrie Veselka, Jerry Elzner and Marion Peterek.

A lovely summery indoor picnictype lunch was served by Ann MArie Moss, Norma Baker, Mary Elzner, Annie Regmund, Leona Matula, Pauline Novosad, Marcellina Mokry and Helen Pavelka. Enjoyed by everyone were three kinds of sandwiches: chicken salad, tuna salad and pimiento cheese; vegetable salad and fresh cantaloupe slices; pickles, jelled salad; chips and three different kinds of cake, plus strudel. It was a real treat enjoyed by all.

Those not in a hurry to get an appointment or shopping, etc., stayed to enjoy table games.

September Meeting Vice President Helen Kasparek again took on the president's duties while Becky is in Africa vacationing with husband, Dan Jackson.

After the usual formalities, guest were introduced. Millie Elzner introduced Dolores Pollock, who immediately decided to become a member.

Anna Marie Moss introduced her guest, Agnes Flores, the Director of the Literacy Council.

Ms. Flores reported that with the great number of illiterates in Corpus Christi, there is a desperate need for volunteers to help them learn to rad and write in English. Classes for volunteers are held periodically and the teaching skills could be mastered by almost anyone who has some free time to give. She stressed that the need is great!

As a fund raiser for the Literacy Council, Ms. Flores had for sale a coupon book for various restaurant discounts with the council receiving $5 per books old. Several members purchased books.

She also mentioned that Lottie Ramey had called to say how much she appreciated the get well card sent to her by the Circle.

The meeting was adjourned with the seated president, Rhonda White, reading our adopted Czech saying, "Mej te se vzdycky radi." Ann Marie Moss kindly revealed the English translation: Always love one another.

We always enjoy King Ranch Chicken and the hostesses did not disappoint us this time either with Kathy Marek making a plentiful supply of it.

Adding to the feast were pinto beans, salads, several desserts, plus tea and coffee supplied by the other hostesses.

Circle of Czech Women report on September meeting Dallas

Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. Faye Wright led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Wilma Holoma, cousin of Hattie Ground, Frances Sparks, Bertha and Julius Podhrasky; Theresa Galuska, mother of Eileen Jakubowski and sister of Ella Mae Povazek, and Carrie Gelnar, aunt of Martha and Stanley Patak.

Bertha introduced her guests, Mirovslav Chodl, Martin Bedrich and Katherine Hubova, from the Czech Republic. She also welcomed 22 members and eight male guests.

Correspondence read by Evelyn Trojacek included "thank you" cards from the family of Charlie Petr and Eileen Jakubowski for the memorial gifts and sympathy cards.

A letter and donation were received from Rose Kopeck.

Bertha thanked the ladies who brought food and helped serve for the Sister City Brno reception for the exchange students. She said everyone enjoyed the afternoon. There was plenty of food and good music provided by the Dallas Czech Orchestra and accordion music by Adolph Provazek and the songs of Mirovslav Chodl.

Libbie Elsik read the names of sunshine cards sent by Georgia Brozek.

"Thinking of you" cards signed by the members were sent to Rose Kopecek, Annie Staglik and Mary Sebestik. A "get well" card was sent to Bessie Petr.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor Expresses Fond Farewell to Illyn Kaspar Ilyn Kaspar was the center of attention on August 17, 1998 when friends, residents and staff of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor honored her with a retirement reception. Administrator Woody Richards recognized her for 27 years of service to the rest home and a total of 50 years of dedication to the nursing profession.

Ilyn's first job was with Dr. Stromky which she started on July 28, 1947. She worked for Dr. Johns in the lab before coming to the rest home.

According to Ilyn, the nursing profession has been a rewarding experi-

ence, providing her with a lot of good memories and good friends. You have to love it or you wouldn't stay with it, she says. After all —it's a lot of hard work!

Ilyn and her husband, Dan, have one son, Dan, Jr., who lives in Houston with his wife, Linda and their two sons, Nathan and Jonathan.

The residents will miss Ilyn's smile and the care that she provided..

County Czech Heritage Society reports on September meeting Wharton

The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society met Tuesday, September 1 at 7 p.m. at the First Christian Church in El Campo, Texas There were 65 members in attendance.

President Marie Matcek opened the meeting. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the Czech national anthem, "Kde Domov Muj," accompanied by Ethel Meek on the piano.

Merril Adamcik gave the prayer.

Secretary Gladys Rod read the secretary's report. She stated that dues for the coming year of 1999 will be due on October 1.

Nominating Committee Chairman Dick Chomout gave a report on the new slate of officers for the coming year.

The following were elected: President Marie Matcek; Vice President John Drozd; Second Vice President Dick Chomout; Secretary Geraldine Socha; Treasurer Rita Vanek; Reporter Ethel Meek; Historian Mary Ann Kainer; Director Annie Gloeckner; and Membership Chairman Frank Vanek.

President Matcek made several announcements. October 25 - 31 is Czech Heritage Week in Texas. The fall state meeting will be held in Victoria on November 14 at the De Costa Sons of Hermann Hall. The chapter's annual Christmas party will be held on December 1 at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the First Christian Church in El Campo. Also, bring a gift to be exchanged.

Merril Adamcik reported on the fund raiser which was on August 2.

Barbecue plates were served to more than 500 people. He said that it was a huge success and he thanked everyone for their support

Wednesday, September 23, 1998—VESTNIK/11 Program Chairman Virginia Balusek introduced the the speaker, Joseph Janak, of Weid, Texas. He gave a very interesting and informative presentation on the lore of weather forecasting. He has many years of experience in observing the weather. He gave many examples of observing weather patterns at certain times and he could predict the weather. Some of the examples he gave are: If the grass in green in January, it will grow poorly in June; if it rains on Easter, the next five weekends will have rainy weather; if there's little rain in May, the months of July and August will be dry. Of interest now, if it was hot July 29 to August 10, expect a long, cold winter. And, lastly, if it rains on Jupe 25th, there will be no pecans to harvest.

Several members made reports on their trips. Ernest Repka gave a report on his recent trip to the Czech Republic.

Arnold Charbula reported on his experiences to the Czech Republic. Mr. and Mrs. Art Keinarth reported on a couple of humorous experiences they had.

Ethel Meek stated that she and Kenneth were flying to Calgary, Canada to visit Mrs. Meek's cousin who has recently moved from the Czech Republic to live with her daughter and family.

A correction was made on the program of the Wharton County chapter's meeting in March. The "Music Makers" band was organized by Nora Konvicka The meeting adjourned and refreshments were served.

adjustment. They had to go backwards! This resolved the Parliamentary debate. But Austria and Czechoslovakia have driven on the right ever since that took place.

Also after V-E Day, a s a young man of 17 or 18, Ludek witnessed the execution (hanging) of a Czech traitor and a Nazi war criminal at Pankrac Prison.

In March of 1948, after Klement Gottwald's Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, Ludek met with Jan Masaryk, the Foreign Minister and son of Czechoslovakia's first president, Tomas Masaryk, in front of °been}, dim (close to the Powder Tower [Pragna br4na] for those who have been to and are acquainted with Prague) and shook hands with him. A few days later, the defenestration of Jan Masaryk took place. The Communists were suspected, and that was enough for Ludek to leave his homeland and find a freer life in the West. He made his way to the United States and attended the Carnegie School of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When the Korean conflict broke out, Ludek enlisted in the U.S. Army. He wanted to fight the Communists in Korea,-but to his and everyone's surprise, he was sent to Germany! There he met his wife, Brigitta (Krauze (Krause?). He was sent to the U.S. Army Language School to study Russian at Monterrey, California. He then served in Military Intelligence and got out of the Army after eight years of service.

He then started attending Russian courses at the University of Texas in Austin, where I met him and made his acquaintance. Ludek enlightened me with quite a few of the idioms of the Czech language and peculiarities of the Czech culture. For instance, I learned that the idiom "co si nechat" means "to keep" in English, i.e., "to retain possession of." Ludek also explained an old courting custom inspired by the words to the polka "Nedivte se, pantto" [Don't Be Surprised, Sir]. The words concerned a young man's attempt to court a young lady in a rural setting.

On various occasions Ludek told me about events in his life that had happened in his childhood and early adult life. Ludek had two older sisters. In his childhood, his family listened to radio programs in the Czechoslovakia of that time, hearing the wonderful sounds of the "Golden Thirties," like the R.A. Dvorsky, Frati gek Tichy, Dol Dauber, Antonin Drnbek orchestras, etc.

Unfortunately, that came to an end with the Munich Crisis of 1938 and Hitler's invasion and Occupation in 1939. As a result of having been in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the First Republic of Czechoslovakia inherited a left-hand traffic pattern (possibly as a result of British influence on that empire when automobiles first bean to populate the world's roads). Early photographs and some movies of the First Republic indicate a left-handed traffic pattern. I also saw the movie, The Cardinal, starring Tom Trion with scenes in what was supposed to be preAnschluss Vienna with a left-hand traffic pattern. The Czech Parliament debated the issue for 20 years (19181938) without resolving it. When Hitler came to power, he forcibly decreed a changeover to a right-hand traffic pattern in the countries his armies occupied. This occurred, obviously, with Austria in Anschluss in 1938, and in what was left of dismembered Czechoslovakia in March of 1939. Ludek was there as an 11- or 12year-old boy and was witness to the changeover. As the Nazi German troops came through Bohemia and Moravia, they immediately compelled the traffic pattern to switch over to the right, as was the practice in Germany and in most other parts of Europe. 1 read a National Geographic article about Czechoslovakia just after V-E Day, and mention was made of the streetcars' having difficulty making the

Throughout the years, Ludek helped me with such things. In 1963, was in the U.S. Air Force and was sent to Okinawa. I saw Ludek a few days before I was to go. I guess after that, Ludek must have taken his position at San Diego State University.

I returned home form Okinawa and the service in June of 1964. I studied Russian at the Middlebury, Vermont, College Summer Language School for Russian. I kept in touch with Ludek all this time. After the 1964 Middlebury session, I tried my hand at Russian and and Slavic Literature courses in graduate school, but it did not pan out. I eventually looked to electronics to find a career in. I attended the Austin School of Electronics, which was art of the Nixon-Clay Business College in Austin. But on the day I graduated from the electronics school, April 15, 1966, I got that fateful call from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio to be a Russian translator in the Foreign Technology Division there. I had applied for, that job in 1964, after returning home from Middlebury but had not been selected.

I just more or less wrote off working there, so it was a very impacting surprise to get that phone call. I was just about ready to tell the caller no, when I asked her how much it would pay. It turned out to be $3,000 a year more tan what I would be getting at the TV factory was about to go to work for in Texas (I really did not want to leave Texas. To make a long story short, I did move to Ohio from Texas but with a heavy heart. I kept corresponding with Ludek all this time.

88, Houston Youth Club reports on August meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, On August 19, the Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club held their monthly meeting. There were 16 youth club members and ten adults at the meeting.

We discussed Family Day which was set for Saturday, September 19th at Lodge 88. Members were asked to bring a covered dish such as a vegetable, dessert or a salad. They were also asked to bring a cake or dessert for the auction.

We also discussed the the Christmas ornament contest that was scheduled for the same day.

Plans are bing made for a Halloween party for the Youth Club.

Dr. Ludek Kozil dies (Editor's Note: The following obituary notice, submitted by Henry Peck of South Charleston, Ohio, was written in Czech by Msgr. Peter Esterka. The English translation is by Mr. Peck, a friend of Dr. Kozlik)

My

Professor Ludek Kozlik was born on May 10, 1927 in the city of Veltrusy in Bohemia. He was brought up in a strict Catholic family. In 1948 he immediately crossed the border.

Through Germany and England, he made his was into the United States, where he first studied at the Carnegie School of Technology in Pittsburgh, but when war broke out in Korea, he enlisted in the U.S. Army with the intent of fighting in Korea; however, he was sent to Germany. Thcre, Munich, he met his future wife, Brigitta, with whom he tied the knot in 1954. Right way the next year he was sent to the U.S. Army Language School. After graduating from that school he worked in Military Intelligence until he was discharged from the Army. Then he studied.

Russian at the University of Texas in Austin in the Department of Slavonic Languages. After finishing his studies in 1963, he went to San Diego State University in California. He stayed there until he retired.

Professor Kozlik was truly a firm pillar of the community for our countrymen's mission in San Diego. Not only I, but we all will miss him very much.

I first became acquainted with the man who was to become Dr. Ludek Alois Kozlik in the fall of 1959, where there were six of us students in a Russian literature course taught by Dr. Werner Winter at the University of Texas in Austin. Those students were: Carol Barrett, Marilyn, whose last name I forget, Kenneth Dolohite, Peter Brady, Ludek Kozlik, and me, who was an undergraduate in his senior year. The course touched on various periods of Russian literature, one piece of which was Pushkin's play, Boris Godunov. In addition to the Russian language, the play contained a little scene in which there were some German and French lines. Marilyn translated the French, while Carol translated the German lines.

But that is deviating. I thought the name "Kozlik" was Czech and asked him. He told me he was Czech and we began conversing in Czech. We began to associate socially, which also led me to become acquainted with his wife, Brigitta, known then as "Kitty."

Ludek, as a veteran, lived in that section off Lake Austin Boulevard in which veterans attenaing the University of Texas were permitted to live less expensively. One time, whcn I was visiting him and Kitty, they were taking care of a child of some of their friends, Marta MaclWek, daughter of Milo and Marta MachAC'ek, also refugees from Communist Czechoslovakia. Ludek told me little Marta had diabetes. The last I heard of the MachAeleks, they were living in Boston, Massachusetts.
