Stop Worrying and Start Living Old News is Good News "One of the most tragic things

Every year, friends of the Temple Public Library hold a used book sale to raise money for what else - new books. The final day of the Labor Day weekend sale is a special treat as bookworms snatch up volumes at the bargain basement price of $2 a bag.

Half of the fun is digging through the hundreds of titles and retrieving the gems like Dale Carnegie's How to Stop Worrying and Start Living which I uncovered in this year's search.

The advice that Mr. Carnegie offers in How to Stop Worrying and Start Living is as relative today as it when it was published in 1944. For instance, in Chapter Four, he offers four simple rules for analyzing worry and solving problems:

big, broad, honest' to-God smile on your face; throw aback your shoulders and take a good, deep breath; and sing a snatch of song. If you can't sing, whistle.

If you can't whistle, hum. You will quickly discover what that it is physically impossible to remain blue or depressed while you are acting out the symptoms of being radiantly happy."

I like that. Just get in there, size up the situation and take care of business.

As Carnegie explains, "I have found from costly experience that it is much easier to analyze the facts after writing them down. In fact, merely writing the facts on a a piece of paper and stating our problem clearly goes a long way toward helping us reach a sensible decision . . . A problem well stated is a problem half solved."

Read the book and you'll find it filled with common sense. As Mr. Carnegie observes, "The purpose of this book is not to tell you something new. The purpose of this book is to

Another Positive Action

Pack your smiles and join the members of Lodge 92, Fort Worth this Saturday, September 19, as they host their annual Czech Heritage Day at National Hall. The celebration kicks off an noon with a barbecue lunch.

Plates are $6.50 for adults and $4 for children. The fun continues throughout the afternoon and evening, with performances by the Fritz Hodde Orchestra and the Jodie Mikula Orchestra, and various other entertainment throughout the day. Admission for all day is $7; and $3 for those under 17.

Lodge 73, Seymour Hosts District Four Fun Day September 26

Around the Districts District Two Fall Meeting at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreational Area (BLORA Sunday, September 20, 1998 • BLORA (Lake Belton) The District Two Fall Meeting is Sunday, September 20, 1998, at Live Oak Pavilion at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA) in Belton, Texas. Members of Lodge 47, Seaton will host the event. Registration begins at 1 p.m. and the meeting is at 2 p.m.

The day's activities include swimming (lifeguards on site), Progressive 42 Tournament, volleyball (youth and adults), guessing games, raffle ($25, $50, and $75), youth silent auction, watermelon seed contest, horseshoe tournament, jelly and jam contest (18 years and older), and Christmas ornament contests.

88, Houston Hosts District Five Fall Meeting September 19 each and 15 at $10 each. There will be crafts, needlework, kolaches, painting, handicrafts, horseshoes, and volleyball.

Won't you make plans to enter at least one of these categories? The youth will have booths and display their Christmas ornaments. Bingo will be lots of fun to play. So bring some bingo prizes.

Circle your calendar for our Fall Fun Day on September 19, 1998, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lodge 88. Watch for the program in the Vestnik.

The District Five planning meeting was August 11, 1998, at Lodge 88, Houston. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Evelyn Mikeska. Evelyn thanked Johnnie and Clara Broz for getting everything ready for the meal. All was enjoyed.

Our District Five Fun Day is planned for September 19, 1998. This is a Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The short meeting is from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. A covered dish dinner will be served at noon. So please bring your favorite dish and a pastry. The meat will be furnished by the district.

Door prizes totaling $200 will be furnished by the district: two at $25

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood members contribute time and energy to Wesffest celebration Hi! After the baking of dozens and dozens of kolaches earlier in the month and after Brother George Straten, our baker, baked all 530 loaves of bread, there was still a gathering of workers on Friday, September 4th.

On Friday before the official Westfest began, about 22 people showed for the preparation of food to be served from the booth of SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood. Thanks to the good crowd that showed up to work.

One potato, two potato, three potato, four ... ! There were the potato peelers, the potato cleaners, the potato carriers, and the potato dicers. It all went like clockwork and we all had a good time preparing 1100 pounds of "spuds" for cooking to begin around 5 a.m. that Saturday morning.

Come Westfest time, there were crews working at Cottonwood Hall preparing food and crews working at the Westfest grounds preparing and serving food to many of the approximately 20,000 or more people who attended the festivities. So, we all worked and played very hard for two days.

And guess what? Come Monday, September 7th, Labor Day, we all got to keep on having fun with each other as clean-up began. There was still lots of work to be done in cleaning up and removing the booth from the Westfest grounds and anticipating next year's Westfest.

I sure hate that I failed to have a camera with me during all this excitement. I could have had some good pictures for the Vestnik.

Thanks to all who came by the Cottonwood SPJST No. 6 booth for potato boats of sausage, potatoes and sauerkraut with homemade bread, sausage sandwiches, kolaches or just a mug of tea to keep cool and say "Hello." We all look forward to seeing you again real soon.

31, Yoakum planning October 18 Czech Week kick-off celebration at Werner's Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Plans are underway to observe "Czech Heritage Week" a week early with a Family Night kick-off celebration on October 18 at Werner's Restaurant in Shiner, starting at 4 p.m., The event will include the election and installation of officers.

Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. followed by speakers who will talk about the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in LaGrange.

Lodge 25, Ennis welcomes newest member Lodge 25, Ennis proudly introduces the newest addi11 tion to the lodge. He's Andrew Lawrence Reeve, born November 27, 1997 to Chip and Andrew Reeve Joyce Reeve of Ennis.

Andrew is already 27" tall and weighs in at 16 1/2 pounds.

32, Victoria reports on August meeting Lodge

We had our meeting on August 12, 1998 at the VECO Building. All officers were present. The minutes were read and the treasury report was given.

Both reports were approved.

Several members from our lodge attended and enjoyed the Youth Achievement Day in Hillje. The -children's talent and arts and craft projects were really great.

Mike Ahlstrom bought a CD for us to listen to the music of Richard Urbis.

We had a special guest in attendance, Annie Vahalik of Lodge 4, Hallettsville. We also had the pleasure of having two of our youth club members, John Thomas and Ryan Richardson and Nicholas and Elizabeth Vahalik from Lodge 4, Hallettsville, entertain us. Elizabeth performed a dance to "Spice Up Your Life" and Nicholas and Bryan presented Abbot and Costellos's "Who's on First" skit.

Nicholas and Bryan placed first with the, skit at District Six Youth Achievement Day in Hillje and second at State Youth Achievement Day in Temple. John Thomas placed first at District YAD with his apricot jelly and second at State YAD. Our young people participate with the youth club at Hallettsville.

Sometimes — whenever their parents are not able to bring them to the meeting — Adolf and I take them and we enjoy visiting with the good people.

Evelyn Holy and the ladies always serve a delicious "svacina."

Last Sunday, we had our District Six Fall Meeting in Victoria which was hosted by Lodge 97, Placedo. We all enjoyed the reception and the delicious meal which was served.

After the meeting was adjourned, refreshments were served.

40, El CampoHillje meets September 20 Lodge

SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje held its first Sunday meeting on August 16, 1998 at 3 p.m. with four officers and 33 members present.

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Leona Macha. Chuck Schwartzkoph led the members with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer in memory for our ill and deceased members.

The roll call of officers showed President Bennie Reck and Treasurer Madeline Shimek absent. Trustees absent were Floyd Shimek and Gene Valigura.

The minutes were approved as read.

Vice President Leona Macha read and acted on all correspondence from the Home Office.

Youth Leader Michelle Kuntz announced that there would be a youth club meeting and ice cream social on August 23, 1998 at 3 p.m. at the lodge hall.

Due to the absence of our treasurer, no report was given.

A motion was made by Chuck Schwartzkoph and seconded by Karel Matejka to give $500 to the youth club.

After an in-depth discussion on how to process this transaction, Karel Matejka made a motion to vote on the first motion. The result was nine for and 14 against. The motion did not paAs. Edmond Kana made a motion, seconded by Frankie Vanek, to deposit the $500 check into SPJST Lodge 40's general account.

Youth Leader Michelle Kuntz requested $300 from the lodge to start the youth club. Rita Vanek made a motion to give the youth club $300.

The motion was seconded by Chuck Schwartzkoph.

Trustee Frankie Vanek reported on the proposed project of improving the lodge's bathroom.

Karel Matejka made a motion to buy a PA (public address) system. After a short discussion, the motion was tabled

by Rita Vanek and seconded by Michelle Kuntz. A committee was appointed to check out PA systems.

Committee members are: Michelle Kuntz, Karel Matejka and Frankie Vanek.

48, Beyersville to host Progressive "42" tournament October 24 Lodge

SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a Progressive "42" Tournament on Saturday, October 24, 1998.

Registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and we plan to begin playing at 9:15 a.m.

Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes per game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially SPJST invite members but anyone is welcome. you do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accord-

ingly for the first round. The two winners will move to the next table and split up and play with the losers who remain at that table. There will be no head table, thus all winners will move.

We will use the same rules that the SPJST uses. We ask that players please pre-register so we can determine the food needs; however, it is not a must to pre-register. 48, Beyersville sponsors fourth annual Pokorny-Polanka Tarok Tournament Lodge

The Fourth Annual PokornyPolanka Tarok Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 21, 1998 at SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville, Texas.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and play begins at 9:15 a.m.

Registration fee is $15 per ( person and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes.

There will be six rounds of play.

We have decided to add a new twist to the tournament this year.

Prizes will be awarded as usual to the top winners plus we will award ten cents a chip in increments of 10 chips. Thus, if you have a score of 769 at the end of the day, you would have 160 chips to the good times ten cents; which would give you $16.

Playing rules are similar to SPJST rules except for calling "Povinost."

You can pass povinost, but if you go povinost, you cannot pay off. You draw yourself you play it.

49, Rowena Tarok Tournament in conjunction with Czech Heritage Week Lodge

Lodge 49, Rowena will host a tarok tournament on October 24 at the lodge hall in Rowena. In conjunction with the tournament, we will celebrate Czech Heritage Week, October 25 through October 31, and invite everyone to join us on the 24th for visitation and fellowship. A noon meal will be served.

Following the tournament, the lodge will sponsor a polka dance from 7 until 11 p.m. Music will be furnished by the Havlak-Batla Polka Band. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the day with us.

Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

L.J.,is 63, Sweet Hc...„ quarterly meeting, social September 20 in Shiner Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home, will hold its monthly meeting and quarterly social on September 20th, 1998 at the Green-Dixon Park Pavilion in Shiner beginning at 12 noon. We will start with a "happy hour," followed by a picnic meal of hamburgers, hot dogs, with side dishes and ice cream for dessert. It will not be necessary to bring anything but if you would like to bring a dessert, you may do so.

After our meal, we will hold a short business meeting. Most important on our agenda is a discussion of our upcoming sponsorship of the polka dance. Door prizes will be drawn and someone with a birthday in July, August or September will win a birthday cake baked by Ann Moseley.

Our meeting will follow with children's activities and games. You may want to just sit and visit and enjoy the nice breeze that is always blowing at the park. (Last year we had more than a breeze.) There are plenty of benches and tables but if you would like to bring a lawn chair you may do so.

Bring a pole if you want to fish.

This is our annual outing and picnic meal so come on out and relax. We'll have plenty to eat and drink and everyone could use a couple of hours to unwind in the hills of Shiner. See you on the 20th.

Lodge 80, Holland reports on September meetir7 Dear Members and Friends: President Harold Rohde called the meeting to order at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 1998. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members.

All officers were present except for Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham, who was home ill. Brother Latham has been having problems with his blood pressure. Hope you are doing fine now!

Vice President G,L. Brisbin read a "thank you" from the Joe Zajicek family for the scholarship gift.

e 16, 19 President Rohde stated that the Holland Seniors would be having a barbecue dinner before the homecoming game on Friday, September 18, 1998. Cost will be $5 per plate.

President Rohde also reminded the membership of the upcoming fall meeting to be held at Lake Belton and hosted by Lodge 47, Seaton. He stated to watch the Vestnik for more details.

The SPJST State Barbecue Cookoff was discussed and an ad is to be purchased in the program to help with the support. The cookoff is slated to be on October 2 and 3 at Seaton Star Hall.

Lodge No. 187, Round Rock sent an invitation to the opening of their new lodge home on October 4, 1998.

Lodge 87, Temple: Salad, Sorbet, Shingles and Celebration Temple's Lodge 87 met in our usual location on Tuesday, August 11.

President Alford called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed brethren. The minutes were read and approved. Treasurer Entrop's report was approved as well We were pleased to welcome two new members. Donald and Brenda Taylor from Temple were accepted unanimously into our lodge, and we hope to see them in person soon.

We are still awaiting estimates on the cost of erecting permanent horseshoe pits and replacing our plumbing system.

Our roofing contractor felt that our shingles would probably last another five years so we opted to concentrate on repairing our plumbing first.

Our next discussion was a remarkably active debate about whether or not

to sponsor an award at the District '• arbecue Cook-off. By a narrow margin, we opted not to do so. Although we wanted to support the Statewide Charities, we wanted to do so in a manner more directly relevant to our lodge members' interest.

We plan to review the lease on the land surrounding our lodge. With the ongoing improvements to the adjacent properties, we may find it useful to renegotiate. Once more of the construction is finished, we will see about repainting and clearing around our lodge's signs on Adams Avenue and on 50th Street.

I reported on the second invitations to our 50-year pin celebration. I sent updates out to Judy Faye Millender and Butch and Dorothy Fowler who plan to attend. I also sent notes to Bernice and Reuben Talasek, Ray von Rosenberg and Patricia Gunn who requested that their pins be mailed.

We liked our salads and sorbet so much that we're going to have them again at our next meeting on September 8!

Lodge 88, Houston to host District Five Fall Family Day this Saturday, September 19 The District Five Family Day is this Saturday, September 19, at Lodge 88. It starts with a brief meeting at 11:30, followed by refreshments and dinner at 12:00. The district will furnish chicken barbecue and members are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert.

Members can also bring prizes for bingo.

There will be 2 door prizes of $25 each and 15 of $10 each. An election for S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Director will also be held. Members may participate in several contests, including Kolaches, Needlework and Handicraft (only one item in each category). The youth will also be participating in a Christmas ornament contest. This sounds like a great day for the entire family!

Agnes Haney of the Entertainment Committee game me a beautiful item that I want to share with you! The neighbors of Bernice Wahlberg, who passed away recently, collected money for flowers and got a beautiful large spray. They had $42 left so they decided to give it to the Lodge 88 Entertainment Committee in memory of Bernice, who had served on the committee for many years. What a beautiful thought!

I want to remind you of the Fiesta Club Party on September 22nd sponsored by the Men's Club. We had one of these before and it was great! Don't forget to get your tickets from the members of the Men's Club.

Dorothy Hensley had open heart surgery. Her many friends are glad to hear that she is at home and is doing fine. Dorothy and Leland are active members of our lodge and were on the Entertainment Committee for many years, with Leland usually serving as Vice Chairman.

Another big day coming up at Lodge 88 is Czech Day on October 25.

It starts at 11 a.m. with a Czech dinner of roast pork, sausage and sauerkraut with all the trimmings. There will be performances by the Lodge 88 Choral Club, Concert Orchestra, Folk Dancers and Lodge 88 Youth Dance Club. The free dance, with dinner ticket purchase, will be from 3 to 7 p.m. with music by Tony Janak. Dance admission, without the dinner ticket, will be $4 per person.

Charles and Lea Hodek went to Branson, Missouri to see their new granddaughter Madison Schumaker.

The parents are Michelle and Matt Schumaker. While in Branson, the Hodeks visited the Lawrence Welk Hotel to dance to music by Bobby Layne who plays at our lodge.

Lillie Spies had a most happy week when her children, Aggie and Joe Foster of California were here. Kathleen Durtschi, daughter of Clara and the late Tommy Jecmenek, has moved to Connecticut. We wish you lots of luck there. Special greetings go to Rose Lee and Tim Kostom. "Get Well" wishes go to Pat Holeman and Nat Gonzales, who is better and at home.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth polka mass draws large crowd; Czech Heritage Day Saturday Dear Members and Friends: You never know how things will work out. In a past letter, I wrote about a "first" that would be taking place at National Hall -- a Catholic mass. This event was put on by St. Paul's Catholic Church which is located in the River Oaks area. Mary Ann and Kenneth Krivanek were responsible for organizing the mass, dinner and dance.

It was really nice to see the hall full — I mean more than 500 people! All of the tables and chairs were occupied and many more had to stand. The mass, which was said by Father Tom Wigginton, was wonderful. The Dallas Vocal Group from the Dallas Czech Club — under the direction of Bob Liska — sang. There were 35 singers on stage in addition to everyone in attendance singing. If you have never been to a polka mass, you are missing something very nice. We thank everyone who had a part in this occasion and especially the Dallas singers and accordion players. The roast beef, fresh potato and green bean dinner was also very good. Martha Janca and Kenneth Krivanek cooked and sliced the roast.

The weather was also very cooperative

The mass started at 11 a.m. and was followed by dinner. The dance started at 3 p.m. and lasted until 7 p.m. It was a full day of enjoyment.

Now, the next big occasion will be the annual Czech Heritage Day on Saturday, September 19. Be sure to wear your Czech costume on that day.

There will be two great bands for your enjoyment.

Thanks for Caring Thanks to all of the members who helped put the tables and chairs in the middle of the floor so we could seal the section under the tables. It does look nice and will protect the floor when spills occur. Helpers were: James and Florence Greer, Frank and Joyce Tesar, Bill and Vickie Gray, Frank and Josephine Prochaska, Carl and Christine Zich, Mary Ann Krivanek, Evelyn Spacek, Rudolph and Claudine Koci, Kenneth Krivanek and Eugene Tesar. Thanks to all of you for contributing this good fraternal work to your lodge. Your efforts are appreciated and it shows that you are interested in your lodge. Work is also being done in the flower beds in front of the building. Joyce Tesar, manager, has the dance floor in perfect shape, making it easy to dance on.

They say that if you don't do anything, you won't make any mistakes When I write, I do make errors but they are not done intentionally.

Please note that the October 18 dance is and will be on Sunday, the 18th, and not on a Saturday. The Granger Polka Boys will be playing. It will be their first time here a our lodge so let's show them that we enjoy their presence. Again, this will be on October 18th from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Czech Heritage Day Also, we still have tickets on sale for Czech Heritage Day — so, if you want to try and win the $500 or other cash prizes, buy the tickets. You have a better chance to win here than if you play the Texas Lottery.

133, San Antonio reports on August meeting Lodge

Lodge 133 held its regular meeting on Sunday, August 16th at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. Special guests included District Seven Director Bob Bayer, State Field Representative Larry Wagner and his wife, Kathy, and Kathy Murley.

Sick members include Viola Kurtz, Sophie Hull and Jarolyn Popp. We wish them a speedy recovery. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Marcella Kleperlik, who passed away recently.

Couples celebrating wedding anniversaries in August were Emil and Grace Rohan, 57 years and Anthony and Alma Trilicek, 61 years.

Bob Bayer introduced Larry Wagner, who is the new insurance Field Representative for District Seven.

He also informed members that three new lodges are being formed in District Seven this year.

Lodge 155, Austin Member Jennifer Hall Elected Vice President of 52nd Girls Nation Jennifer Hall, a member of SPJST Lodge 155, Austin and one of Texas' two Girls Nation Senators, was elected Vice President of the American Legion Auxiliary's 52nd annual Girls Nation, a government education program for outstanding teenage girl's. In this capacity, Hall had the privilege of presenting President Clinton with a souvenir of Girls Nation on behalf of her Senate peers during a White House meeting held= on Friday, July 17. The presentation was broadcast on C-SPAN and CNBC. Highlights of the ceremony were shown on CNN and several local stations across the nation.

Hall's picture with President Clinton was also printed in the Austin American-Statesman as well as the San Antonio Express-News.

During his meeting with Girls Nation, President Clinton talked to the group on the merits of public service and future problems facing our nation, including tobacco and global warming. After a 45-minute program, the president spent another hour meeting with each of the 94 senators individually.

"I have tremendous respect for President Clinton for taking the time to meet with Girls Nation in the manner which he did," said Hall.

"He took almost two hours of his demanding schedule to visit with us and regardless of whether or not you are a Clinton fan, you must realize that he is the President of the United States. That role in itself is of historical importance."

Georgia, in general elections held July 16. Just prior to the election, the candidates made formal speeches to the entire population of Girls Nation and and then traveled on a whistle stop tour where they met individually with each of the communities. Candidates answered questions ranging from the United States' policy toward the International Monetary Fund to the possibility of imposing trade sanctions on China. Election returns were announced two hours after the conclusion of the whistle stop campaign.

"It was an incredible honor knowing that 93 of the most talented, brilliant, and ambitious girls in the nation wanted me to represent said them," Hall. "Even though I had wanted to run for Vice President originally, I was incredibly intimidated once I arrived in Washington. Everyone instantly began reciting their resumes. The majority of these girls had 1580s on their SATs and everyone in their family had, attended Ivy League colleges. The intimidation was getting to me and I almost decided not to run, but I went ahead and gave it a try. Realizing that I could still come out on top in their company gives me an incredible sense of gratification."

Hall is the daughter of John and Janette Hall of Cuero, Texas and the granddaughter of Theodore and Neldina Marek of San Marcos and Ina Hall of Lockhart and the late Jesse Hall and the great-granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Marek and the late Mr. and Mrs. John Holubec.

She attends the Hays Consolidated High School and is in her senior year.

Those of you who did not attend missed a very good and informative meeting. It seems that the rain missed us again and that some other places are getting too much; but that is one of those things that we cannot control.

Texas Senior Games September 21-27, 1998 The registration deadline for the Scott & White Texas Senior Games has passed, but staff and volunteers are busily entering, checking, verifying, and filing participants' charts at the Mayborn Convention Center. More than 400 volunteers are still needed.

Virginia Feaster at Scott & White Hospital (724-5592) is the Volunteer Coordinator, and is compiling a volunteer data base that can be utilized for this and any future events. The list includes large groups such as TISD with over 100, the Coscom from Fort Hood, and students with Southwest Texas and the University of Mary Hardin Baylor.

Volunteers will receive a tee-shirt and lunch. We will also host a volunteer/sponsor appreciation event on Monday, September the 21st at 6 p.m. at the Convention Center. The Event Coordinators will be in attendance fo introduce themselves, and give instructions on times, locations, and duties.

Please stress that they need not know a great deal about the event, and will be placed according to their capabilities

and desires. They may request .a specific event of interest, a specific date, or time that they are available. From cutting fruit to timing, typing, filing, or just giving a few words of encouragement, we still need volunteers.

Areas of greatest need are: during the week at many different events at the Convention Center, including table tennis, dominoes, and shuffleboard.

(They will be cool and comfortable inside!) Basketball and the triathlon are also in need of assistance. The weekend events are pretty well covered.

Adults and students may volunteer, and in some events, well supervised young children might enjoy cheering and waving to participants at events such as the road races, cycling, triathlon, and track & field. Our goal is to ensure that every participant has a good experience while in Temple.

Christian Sisters host quilt show October 3 The Christian Sisters Society of the Temple Brethren Church will host their annual Quilt Show on Saturday, October 3, 1998, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will also be baked goods and other items for sale. A yo-yo coverlet will be given away at the closing of the event: Love donations for the coverlet are available from Christian sister members.

in Cyclone hosts picnic September 27 St. Joseph's Church invites you to bring your family and enjoy their annual picnic on Sunday, September 27 in Cyclone.

The traditional sausage and chicken supper will be served from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Games also start at 11 a.m. and will include a wide assortment of old and new activities, including: Bingo, Las Vegas, Coin Toss, Rind Stand, General Store, Football Throw, Basketball Thrown, Putt-Putt Golf, Face Painting and the Cyclone Express Train Ride. In addition, there will be tents for shade and beer will be sold.

CHRISTINE M. STRUSKA PORRAS, age 52, a homemaker, who died on Tuesday, August 4, 1998, at a local health care center.

Memorial services were held at 6:30 p.m., Monday, August 10, at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church.

Burial was at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11, in Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington.

Christine Porras was born December 30, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois. She was a member of St Maria Goretti Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. She was an area resident for more than 40 years and a graduate of Arlington High School.

She is survived by her husband, Enrique Porras; children, Julie Porras, Frank Porras, Tony Porras and Mario Porras.

Expression of Sympathy Gilbert H. Henneke, 71, of Ellinger, died Wednesday, June 24 in La Grange at the home of his sister, Virginia Polasek.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 26 at 10 a.m. in the Fayetteville Brethren Church with the Rev. Milton Maly officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Born December 6, 1926 in Frelsburg, he was the son of Anton W. and Lena (Moeckel) Henneke. He was engaged in farming and was an oil field worker.

Mr. Henneke was an officer and faithful member of SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger and was a member of the Fayetteville Brethren church, the Ellinger Volunteer Fire Department, Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 30 of Ellinger, the La Grange American Legion Post No. 102, the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce and the Fayette County Farm Bureau. He was named outstanding 1998 Senior Citizen in Ellinger. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, having attained the rank of sergeant.

Only immediate survivors are one brother and sister-in-law, George and Una Mae Henneke of Fayetteville; one sister, Virginia Polasek of La Grange; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law, Lee Roy Polasek

BERNICE L. WAHLBERG, who passed away Wednesday, August 12, 1998 a the age of 67 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Cat Spring, Texas on December 21, 1930 and moved to Houston upon graduation from Sealy High School.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Cat Spring, Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 44, Cat Spring Agriculture Hall and the Red and White Polka Dance Club.

After retiring from Industrial Security with 19 years of service, her hobbies were gardening and dancing.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James E. Wahlberg. She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Holden and husband, Rick; son, Greg Wahlberg and wife, Brenda; granddaughter Molly Wahlberg; brother, Wilfred Eckardt and wife, Audrey; her mother, Mrs. Eckardt; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Mrs. Shenkir was born to John and Marie Svoboda Cabla in Bell County.

She married Adolph F. Shenkir on October 18, 1933 in Temple. He preceded her in death in June 1996. She was a member of the Seaton Brethren Church.

She was also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton for 54 years and served as a youth leader. She was a member of the RVOS and had been a 4-H leader.

She was co-founder of the Seaton Senior Citizens' Center and a member of the Seaton Cemetery Association.

Survivors are four daughters, Shirley Patterson of Temple, Ann Thompson and Ruth Keith, both of Arlington and Norma Tucker of Rogers; 10 grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; and three step-greatgrandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Seaton Brethren Church, Family Hospice of Temple or to any charity.

Sister Kelner was born on August 22, 1912 in Wharton County. She passed away on Sunday, August 16 in East Bernard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Kelner; parents, Joe and Frances Michulka; sisters: Bertha Lopez, Dorothy Orasak, Rosie Kelner, and Lydia Duplantis; and brothers, Micky (August) and Albert Michulka.

SLAVIK, age 78, who passed away in a Houston hospital on July 21, 1998.

He was the son of Joseph and Agnes (Kostroum) Slavik and was born on August 31, 1919 in Cameron, Texas.

Brother Slavik retired from Bowen Tool in Houston where he was foreman

in the assembly department.

After his retirement, he moved back to Cameron where he enjoyed farming activities with his brother. He also enjoyed going fishing.

Funeral services were held on July 24 in the Kathryn W. Green Chapel at Green's Funeral Home in Cameron with Father Tom Hanus officiating.

Burial was held at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cameron.

He is survived by a son, Michael Slavik of El Paso; a daughter, Kimberlee Sturrock of Houston; a brother, L.T. Slavik of Cameron; three sisters, Marie Moare and Emily Hlavell, both of Cameron, and Ann Bledsoe of Cookson, Oklahoma.

In Memory of Wilton Chaloupka Funeral services for Wilton Chaloupka, 91, of Cooks Point, were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Cooks Point Brethren Church with Rev. Norman Haisler, Sr., officiating. Burial followed in the Cooks Point Cemetery.

Mr. Chaloupka died Monday, June 22, 1998 in College Station.

Wilton Walter Chaloupka the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe T. Chaloupka, was born September 5, 1906.

Wilton attended Liberty School (grades 1-7) and Caldwell High school.

He did not graduate because it was in the best interest of his family to work the crops.

He was baptized and confirmed in 1923 at New Tabor by Rev. Motycka.

He served his country in the United States Army from 1925-1928.

He worked for the Sdnta Fe Railroad and Surovik Drugstore in Caldwell before moving to Cooks Point.

He served on the Board of Directors of the Burleson County Soil and Water Conservation District for 25 years, 12 of those as chairman. He and Libby donated the current Soil and Water Conservation District offices in Caldwell. Their reason for giving?

Simply to return to the community some of the gifts with which God had blessed them.

He was a trustee of the Cooks Point school for a number of years, served on the board of SPJST Lodge No. 116, also as chairman. In 1956, he took on added responsibilities as a permit man for an oil company. In the church, he served as Chairman of the Board of Elders from 1939 to 1980. At the time of his death, he was an honorary board member. He held the office of Sunday School superintendent for many years, taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir, was a staunch member of the Men's Brotherhood and with his wife, Libby, served as a BYF sponsor.

Wilton married Libby Drgac at the church in Cooks Point on November 12, 1930. For almost 60 years thereafter, they worked and played side-byside until God called her Home on October 26, 1990. God did not bless

them with children of their own, but instead gave them the capacity to love and befriend children in the church and community.

In their time together, they fulfilled many hopes and dreams and laid the foundation for their future. They never doubted that God knew best. They served as living, breathing examples of Christianity at its best. Yes, they talked the talk, but more importantly, they walked the walk. Now, God has reunited them for eternity.

Before her death, Libby encouraged Wilton to remarry. He honored her request and his second wife, Jo Akers, also preceded him in death.

When the Cooks Point Brethren Church was established, there was no doubt Christ was the cornerstone and the foundation. The early founding fathers were the pillars of the church.

Wilton and Libby Chaloupka, along with Emil and Olga Urbanovsky and a few others took the reins and became the pillars. For years, they were in the thick of things, giving their utmost for God's highest. Then, as years took their toll, they stepped aside graciously, offering their help and guidance to the next generation.

In addition to his wives, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Edward (Shorty) and Engbert (the father of Barbara Jancik and James Chaloupka); and an infant sister.

Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Robert and Tracy Wine and Bill and Annie Lee Wiese of Caldwell; three sisters-in-law, Mattie Chaloupka of Caldwell, Naomi Lerret of San Antonio, and Lottie Drgac of Caldwell; four nieces, Barbara Jancik of Caldwell, Patsy Albright of Bryan, Johnnie Ruth Homeyer of Caldwell and Georgia Ptacek of Snook; one nephew, James Chaloupka of Caldwell; two great-nieces, Kathy Jancik and Krista Chaloupka, both of Caldwell; one great-nephew, G.W. Jancik of Cooks Point; and numerous relatives of his late wife, Libby Drgac Chaloupka.

In Memory of Johnnie C. Regmund Services for Johnnie C. Regmund, 88, of Port Arthur, Texas were July 21, 1998 at the Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan The Rev. John McCaffrey of St. Joseph's Catholic Church officiated.

Burial was in the Smetana Cemetery.

Mr. Regmund died July 19 in Port Arthur.

He was born in Bryan and lived in Nederland for the past 50 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked as a painter for UNOCAL Refining Co. for 26 years.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 39, Bryan, the American Legion Earl Graham Post No. 159 in Bryan and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Mae Regmund of Nederland, Texas; two daughters, Linda S. Russell of The Woodlands, Texas, and Monica Diaz of Houston and three grandchildren.

Sebek Family Reunion The annual reunion of the family of Joe John Sebek and Frances Koslovsky Sebek will be held at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone (Flag Hall) on Saturday, October 3, 1998.

Summer Camp

Our camp was very successful. It was held at Camp Val Verde near Waco on July 24, 25, 26 and 27. It was hot, hot, hot, but that did not stop the young people from having a great time.

Thanks to all of our staff people for doing an outstanding job at camp.

Thanks, especially, to Gladys Yates, our camp nurse, and John Engelke, who went beyond the call of duty to make sure that everyone had an enjoyable time. Thanks to all donors who contributed cold drinks, water and many types of snack food. The children were pleased to have something refreshing — especially in the heat of the day.

It was also a safe camp. We had only one small injury that required hospital treatment. On the next day; however, he was back in action and doing his thing on the challenge course.

To show our appreciation to the young people, we had something special on Saturday night. We hired "All 4 Fun" from Dallas to bring a couple of games This was fascinating — especially with the younger group. The teens also enjoyed their time.

Sunday service was held in the dining room and led by Jerry Zabojnik.

Besides making great snow cones, he is a great speaker and leader at camp.

After our service, the LITs, Justin Engelke, J.J. Novak and Brian Tierce, accompanied by chaperone John Engelke, were treated to paint ball activity in Waco. Leaders-in-Training (LITs) must attend a state camp in June. This is our way of saying "thank you" for taking the time to learn and help us at district camp.

On Sunday evening, we had a catered hamburger dinner that was enjoyed by all. Some of the dignitaries who attended the party included President Howard Leshikar, State Youth Director Joni Lange and her husband, Kenny Lange, District Three

Director Johnnie ICrizan, District Three Rest Home Director George Pauling and special guests Richard and Louise Burney. After dinner, Richard and Louise took the young people on an Indian water balloon hayride. This was one activity that everyone either got scared hoping the Indians would not attatch the trailer or got surprised when the Indians started throwing water balloons. They hayride is always a highlight of camp and we really do appreciate the Burneys coming out to share their time with us at camp.

On Monday, our last few hours at camp, we were finishing up our crafts, taking our last horseback rides, swimming, giving hugs, saying our tearful goodbyes and, of course, taking pictures to capture those Kodak moments.

We knew, however, that the goodbyes would not be for long as the SPJST State Royalty Contest and Youth Achievement Day were only a week away.

State Royalty and YAD On Saturday, August 1, 1998, the SPJST State Royalty Contest was held in Temple at 4 p.m. The Mayborn Center was beautifully decorated.

District Three Queen Colette Kenney and King Paxton Davies did an outstanding job on their speeches.

Competition was hard and we are very proud to have a State First Runner-Up Queen. District Three had many winners in craft and talent. We also had the honor of having the Lodge 84, Dallas Beseda Dancers perform during the Youth Achievement Day opening ceremony. This brings our year to an end. School is starting and we expect all of our youth club members to attend their monthly meetings so we can have fun again next summer.

Five Fall Family Day set for September 19 at Lodge 88, Houston District

Dear District Five Youth, The District Five Fall Family Day will be on Saturday, September 19, at Lodge 88, Houston. It will be from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Christmas Ornament Contest Registration for the Christmas Ornament Contest will be from 11:30 12:30 p.m. They will be judged by age categories. The first place winners will have their ornament hanging on the youth Christmas tree in the SPJST Museum.

We also ask for State Youth Achievement Day winners to bring their prize-winning dessert to be auctioned at Family Day. Remember, each youth is asked to bring a dessert for the auction or for the dinner. Each family is asked to bring a covered dish to go with the barbecue chicken.

We will be playing bingo in the afternoon and each family is asked to provide two prizes for bingo.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On July 25-26,1998, youth and parents from Lodge 4 Hallettsville, Lodge 28 East Bernard, Lodge 30 Taiton, Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje, and Lodge 97 Placedo traveled to Corpus Christi for our annual District Six Trip.

Parents, and youth met in Corpus on Saturday around 12:00 p.m. at the Texas State Aquarium. There, members marveled at the wonderful underwater sites that the Aquarium had to offer. We then walked next door to the USS Lexington Carrier Ship and enjoyed touring the enormous vessel.

Everyone was then off to the Museum for a bit of science and history. There we also toured replicas of the ships used back in the days of Columbus. It was quite a sight to see how small the ships actually were.

After a long day of excitement and education, we headed to the Holiday Inn on Emerald Beach, where District 6 members spent the night. Everyone was free to spend the rest of the trip at their leisure. Members enjoyed dining out, youth took in some swimming at the indoor swimming pool, and Trey Staff even managed to fit in some Karaoke. The next day some members took to the beach while some youth rented jet skis and took to the water, and afterwards everyone departed for home.

All in all, we had a great trip. We did a lot of fun and educational things and I hope everyone had a great time.

I look forward to next time!

Since this fraternal organization is based on caring for others, we thought this could be our way of making a smile appear on a little child's face as they open their gift in their home.

In our meeting, we discussed our next activity and decided that we would hold a Halloween meeting and have a contest for everyone wearing 'a costume. This was approved by everyone including the categories which are to remain a mystery — except to the officers who will judge the event.

Youth Club enjoys trip to Corpus Christi Dear Readers, Only July 25-26, District Three youth club members took a trip to Corpus Christi. We toured the Texas State Aquarium, U.S.S. Lexington, and the Children's Science and History Museum. The museum was lots of fun.

The older kids played on the video phones. The younger kids played on a play ship and the "adults" played with the magnets. My brother liked the replicas of the Nifia, Pinta and the Santa Maria. The little boys liked the crow's nest in the ships.

Friends get together to talk and visit over a glass of beer or wine.

Czechoslovaks also enjoy soccer games, going to the movies, and watching television. A lot of the people go to the ballet, concerts, operas, and plays in Prague. Camping and hiking are some of the favorite outdoor activities. Vacations are usually spent in the country's scenic mountain and forest regions.

About two-thirds of the people are Roman Catholics, but very few of the people actually attend church. Nearly all of the people in Czechoslovakia can read and write. Education is free, and the government runs the schools. Children must attend school beginning at the age of six. They only have to to school through the age of 16. After they graduate, if they want to, students can attend a fouryear general education school which prepares them for university work.

Czechoslovakia has five universities.

The oldest university is Charles University which is located in Prague.

The Czechs and Slovaks both love music. They both have traditions of folk songs and dances. Some great Czech composers include Bedrich Smetana, Antonin Dvorak, and Less Janacek.

Czechoslovakia's best farmland is in north-central Bohemia, central Moravia, and southern Slovakia.

They grow crops of corn, barley, rye, sugar beets, and wheat. Many farmers raise beef and dairy cattle, hogs, poultry and sheep. Livestock products make up a little more than half of Czechoslovakia's agricultural production.

Czechoslovakia faces such problems as environmental pollution problems and a housing shortage.

The increased imports of consumer goods have helped to make a better standard of living for all Czechoslovaks.

Czechoslovakia is covered with rugged mountains, rolling hills, and fertile plains.

About threefourth of the people live in urban areas and work in manufacturing industries. Coal and other natural resources like magnesium, mercury, and uranium make Czechoslovakia an industrial nation.

Czechoslovakia gained her independence in 1918 when the Czechs and Slovaks united to form a single nation. Before Czechoslovakia became a nation, Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia were part of AustriaHungary. In 1948, Czechoslovakia became a Communist state. The Communists reorganized the economy and government to be like the U.S.S.R. In 1968, the Czechoslovak government tried to begin a reform program to give the people more freedom, but U.S.S.R. and four other European Communist nations ended the reform program. Today, Czechoslovakia remains a member of the Soviet bloc, led by the U.S.S.R. (Please refer to Editor's Note at end of story.)

About 16 million people live in Czechoslovakia. Two-thirds of the people are Czechs, and about onethird are Slovaks. Hungarians, Germans, Gypsies, Poles, and Ukrainians make up the rest of the population. The two official languages of Czechoslovakia are Czech and Slovak. CZECH HERITAGE AND CULTURE

Czech National Cemetery Association meets September 27 The annual meeting of the Czech National Cemetery Association will be Sunday, September 27, 1998 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the Library at 750 Clubside Drive in East Bernard. Please contact and invite any and all interested persons who may want to attend.

There are several items that will be discussed and your opinion is welcome.

We will also be discussing the upkeep of the cemetery. Language Class sets fall activities The fall season is ushering in a new menu of events that the Bernard Pivonka Language Class is sure will whet the cultural appetites of any who have sampled the rich flavor of Czech cultural cuisine.

Fall Classes Begin Starting Thursday, September 17, the Czech language classes will resume at Sokol Houston, located at 1314 West Patton. Class hours are from 7:30 to 9 p.m. every Thursday.

October 16 is the date for the fabulous banquet presented by the Austin Czech Historical Association. Several Pivonka Language Class members had such a marvelous time last year, that this year a group of us are getting together a Harris County table(s) at this year's banquet on Friday, October 16. It's at the Omni South Park Hotel in Austin and for a mere $29, you get a truly bountiful array of authentic Czech entrees and desserts and an entire evening of Czech music and dancing. Czech Film Festival at SPJST Lodge Last, but not least, the Bernard Pivonka Czech Language Class is again presenting a Czech Film Festival, sponsored by SPJST Lodge 88. Starting at 7 p.m., Monday, October 19 and continuing for the following seven Monday evenings (except November 9), all films will be shown in the annex building and most of the films will be subtitled in English (with Czech dialogue). Attendance is free and refreshments will be served (covered dishes encouraged).
