Hard Work Paid Off

Newly designated District Six FICs honored at Victoria banquet ongratulations to the 14 newly certified Fraternal Insurance Counselors (FICs) who were honored at a banquet held July 28 in Victoria. Since the FIC designation was first awarded in 1937, the privilege to put those letters behind one's name has been a hallmark of professionalism for sales representatives and home office fraternalists.

The District Six graduates, who began their studies in May of 1997,

were applauded for their persistence in completing the challenging course.

FIC certificates were presented by District Six Director Matt Vanek and State Field Representative Jim Wiest, who had'held the classes. Master of Ceremonies for the program was Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska, who was assisted by State Field Manager Gene McBride.

A Fraternal Hybrid

Kolaches, Anyone?

Congratulations to the members of Lodge 79 Corpus Christi and Sokol Corpus Christi for paying off the note on their building located at 5502 Kostorhyz Road in Corpus Christi.

Since it was constructed in 1978, the 20,000-foot facility has served the community as an educational, athletic and community center. To mark the occasion, members hosted a rousing Mortgage Burning Celebration at the building on August 22. A summary of the day's activities appears on page 8.

The event symbolizes what different groups with common goals can achieve when they work together.

The relationship between SPJST Lodge 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi goes back to at least 1930 when the local Sokol gymnastics unit was organized.

In 1976, the members of Lodge 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi joined forces on a building project that would benefit both organizations. Formal groundbreaking ceremonies were held on May 3, 1977. The grand opening celebration took place on August 4, 5, and 6, 1978 and included a fish fry, sausage supper, barbecue dinner, three dances, six bands, singers, dancers, the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra and gymnastic program with Sokols from Ennis, Dallas, Fort Worth and Corpus Christi.

Twenty years and hundreds of events later, the building is all bought and paid for - thanks to the members who devoted their time and energy to seeing the project through.

"We're very proud of our building and what it represents," says Lodge 79, Corpus Christi President Jerry Sijansky. "When your goals are big enough and people work together, you can fulfill your dreams."

Over the years, the voluntary efforts of SPJST and Sokol members have resulted in considerable savings in building and maintenance costs.

"Members put in the floors and members did the electrical work.

Members did the dry wall and painting and members put in the drop ceiling," says Brother Sijansky. And it didn't stop there, he explains. "The maintenance of the building and its cleaning are all done on a voluntary basis."

Having achieved the goal of paying for the building, what's next for the members of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi and Sokol Corpus Christi? More of the same, according to Brother Sijansky, "We plan to carry on with the goals with which we started - building membership and doing for our membership and the community."

District One Youth Counselor Susan Skrabanek dropped by the Home Office last week to pick up a supply a SPJST Czech music CDs, cassettes and SPJST Cookbooks to sell at Caldwell's big Kolache Fest this Saturday, September 12 in that community's downtown square. It's an annual event that seems to get bigger every year. And, like last weekend's Westfest, numerous SPJST members participate the annual celebration either as performers or vendors. Festival hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is free. For additional information, please refer to last week's Vestnik or call the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce at (409) 567-3218.

Then, on Sunday, September 13th, Lodge 84, Dallas hosts their big annual Czech Fest celebration. The event gets started at 11:30 a.m. with a pork roast dinner. As in past years, there will be booths, games, prizes and a free dance with music by The Vanek Czech Band from 3 to 6 p.m.

Bearing that in mind, here it is:

There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the back fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Then it gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him'to the fence.

He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed.

They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. Show your friends how much you care."

The District Two Fall Meeting is Sunday, September 20, 1998, at Live Oak Pavilion at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA) in Belton, Texas. Members of Lodge 47, Seaton will host the event. Registration begins at 1 p.m. and the meeting is at 2 p.m.

73, Seymour Hosts District Four Fun Day September 26 Lodge

Everyone is invited to attend the District Four Fun Day on September 26, 1998, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 200 East Reiman in Seymour. It is one block east of L&M Ford Dealership.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. with a baked goods contest from 11:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Anyone can enter cakes, pies, and kolaches.

The District Five planning meeting was August 11, 1998, at Lodge 88, Houston. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Evelyn Mikeska. Evelyn thanked Johnnie and Clara Broz for getting everything ready for the meal. All was enjoyed.

Our District Five Fun Day is planned for September 19, 1998. This is a Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The short meeting is from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. A covered dish dinner will be served at noon. So please bring your favorite dish and a pastry. The meat will be furnished by the district.

Lodge 24, Cyclone plans fun fail schedule Dear Members and Friends, Summer is coming to a close and Lodge 24, Cyclone is gearing up for lots of fall fun.

Texas Fall Gala October 24

Texas Fall Gala is Saturday, October 24 at Flag Hall in Cyclone. The evening will be filled with lots of fun and excitement and we want you to be a part of it. A $50 ticket admits two people. The fun begins with hors d'oeuvres at 6 p.m., followed by a barbecue dinner catered by Cyclone Corral at 6:45 p.m. After dinner, local band Morriscode will play for the evening's dance. Refreshments will be served throughout the evening. To top all this, lots of fabulous door prizes will be awarded. Please plan to be at Flag Hall Saturday evening, October 24 for a really great time. New Tabor SPJST members will once again be participating in the annual Kolache Festival held in downtown Caldwell on Saturday, September 12th.

The youth club will be selling SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbooks, tarok cards and CDs and cassette tapes of Czech music performed by Richard Urbis. They will be set up at Vychopen's Dry Good Store on the square (next to the barber shop) along with the SPJST Museum.

Lodge No. 17 will be sponsoring the beer booth at the Old Theater Marketplace on Buck Street. They will also have a food booth serving barbecue sandwiches, wrap-a-rounds, and stuffed baked potatoes. Soft drinks, lemonade, tea and bottled water will also be sold. Both of these booths will also be open on Friday night at the Kolache Festival Kick-Off Party.

Music at the Old Theater Marketplace will be provided by Chris Rybak.

Come out and support the fund-raising efforts of the New Tabor SPJST at the Kolache Festival in Caldwell.

They weather might be hot, but the beer will be cold.

Dear Members, Members of Lodge 18 met on August 18th at the lodge home.

The meeting was called by the President. The pledge to the flag and a prayer for all of our brothers and sisters was said at the beginning of the meeting.

The minutes were read and corrected. Reports were made by the committees and were approved.

Brother Andrew Greinert was voted by the members to be a trustee.

Brother Jack Eschberger read the minutes of the trustees' meetings.

Other items brought to the attention of the members was the fall District Two meeting at Lake Belton on September 20th and the copies of the Rules and By-Laws to be reviewed.

For all workers, there will be a fish fry dinner and social held on September 25th starting at 6 p.m. at the lodge home. Have a good month.

State FAC posts perpetual dates for state tournaments To help in planning and organizingstate tournaments, the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator has worked with the Supreme Lodge to set perpetual dates for the SPJST State Tournaments to be held annually.

81, Needville reports on August meeting

With the third Sunday of the month arriving, it was time for the SPJST Lodge 81 of Needville to meet again.

As usual, people began to arrive around 11 a.m. for the talk and drink coffee session. This time, 29 members and guests attended the dinner and meeting. Our guest for this month was Rosemary Rieger of Needville. She is the daughter of the Eddie Rieger's.

Good to see you, Rosemary — bring mom and dad and come back again.

At 12 noon, the kitchen crew had the meal all set out and ready to eat.

On the menu was barbecue beef and sausage along with all of the tasty side dishes that were brought by the ladies of the lodge. The barbecue beef was furnished by Adolph and Delores Macha and the sausage was provided by the lodge. The barbecue was prepared by the Knights of Columbus of Needville for their annual fund raiser of the Needville Volunteer Fire Department. Thanks to the KC's for a job well done. Also, thanks to all of the ladies for helping in the kitchen due to the absence of Kitchen Chairman Darlene Blinka. Meal grace was said by Adolph Macha.

President Macha called the meeting to order at 1:05 p.m. Willie Mae Kuykendall led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Vice President Vincent Newman was absent with the remaining officers answering roll call. Reports by Willie Mae Kuykendall, our secretary, Benita Walzel, the treasurer, and Gilbert Walzel, Special Fund Chairman, were read and all were accepted as present-

ed. The schedule of events for the hall for the preceding month was read.

In the correspondence department, a thank you note was read from Corey Walzel. Corey is one of the scholarship recipients and will be attending Wharton County Junior College this fall.

The sick list for this month grew with the addition of these names: Emil Bezecny, Mary Werner, Ben Tydlacka, Hermina Fojtik, and Bernie Tielke.

Emil fell and broke his hip which required him to have surgery, but he is back in the rest home. Mary fell at her home and had to have stitches to the back of her head. She was also bruised, but she is doing okay now.

Ben has a sore back plus some other problems, but he was at the meeting and taking it slow with his walker.

Hermina had knee replacement surgery and then later had a heart attack. She is back in Wharton for rehabilitation with her knee. Bernie is having more tests run. Others who remain on the sick list are Jerry Blinka, Emil Pollock and Bill Miller. May God bless each of you with a speedy recovery. Get well wishes are sent to all who are ill.

Our upcoming fund raiser was discussed briefly. The ticket sales are slow right now but as time gets closer to October 18, we are hoping they will pick up. If anyone needs a meal or prize drawing ticket, please contact Benita Walzel at (409) 793-6288 or another member of our lodge. There are a lot of wonderful prizes to be given away. We will also be serving a delicious chicken fried steak meal.

Six new members were accepted into Lodge 81 at our meeting. They are Rubin Sabrsula, Vivian Sabrsula, Erica Suzanne Haydon, Tiffany Michelle Haydon, Lucille Wleczyk, and Desiree Leigh Bell. Rubin, Vivian and Lucille are from Needville and Erica, Tiffany and Desiree are from Montgomery, Texas. We are delighted to have all of you join the SPJST and especially to have you on the roster at Lodge 81. Welcome! Remember, our meetings are always on the third Sunday of the month.

Lodge 84 Dallas invites members to September 13 Czech Fest Dear Members and Friends, We are extending a great big welcome to all to come and help Lodge 84 with our annual Czech Fest. It will be a day of enjoyment. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. A delicious Czech dinner will be catered by Bessie Petr. There will be a pastry booth and the popular cake walk, a gift booth with shopping for home canned pickles, okra and dilled cabbage, rain gauges, and much more.

The Teen Club will run the country store which always has canned goods and meats to win. There will also be other activities you will not want to miss. The big raffle has 27 prizes.

88, Houston adopts "new look" for upcoming Czech Day Lodge

We at Lodge 88 are busy planning a bigger and better Czech Day. Instead of our usual turkey and dressing, the menu has been changed to Czech foods. Roast pork, sausage, sauerkraut, potatoes, beans and coffee or tea will be served for $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12. Birthday Club pastries and kolaches will also be available to satisfy your sweet tooth.

The plans include the crowning of a "King and Queen Lodge 88 Czech Day" and a kolache bake off. The rules for the king and queen are as follows: You must be a Lodge 88 member and wear a Czech costume. To enter the kolache bake off, you need to bring two dozen kolaches to the lodge on Czech Day by 11 a.m. Seven kolaches will be presented to the judges. Kolaches must be on a separate disposable plate covered with a plastic wrap. The rest of the kolaches will be sold at the pastry booth.

The entertainment will start at 11:30 a.m. with the Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral Club performing in the ballroom. They will be followed by our talented Folk Dancers and Youth Dance Class.

At 1:30, the proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Houston, proclaiming October 25th as Czech Day, will be presented and guests will be recognized.

Starting at 2 p.m., a live auction will be held of donated items from local merchants. The Youth Club will have a silent auction of items donated by the membership.

For the favored part of the day, Tony

Janak's band will provide the music for an afternoon of dancing pleasure. The dance will be free to persons purchasing a dinner but for those who do not buy a dinner, the fee will be $4 per person.

The crowning of the king and queen and the kolache bake off winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m.

88, Houston presents minutes from August meeting Lodge

President Clara Broz opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. Jerry Ermis, Gene Barcek and Bennie Kocich presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

The correspondence was then read.

Guest were introduced by President Broz.

Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin from Temple spoke to members about mortgage loans offered through the SPJST Home Office. She gave an in-depth explanation of advantages the SPJST has to offer in their mortgages. Anita invited anyone interested to call her or her assistant, Ann, with questions.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz spoke to members about the importance of the SPJST and the members. She commented on how other fraternals are watching the progress and improvements in the SPJST. She asked that we do not give up; keep pushing our good ideas and put our talents to good use.

Mr. Pierce, Director of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville informed the members of the Miller Trust and distributed a brochure on the subject.

Report of Officers

President Broz reminded members that nominations for the Fraternalist of the Year are due in September and that the Executive meeting was set for August 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Thanks to the Youth Department for the desk set received at Youth Achievement Day. First Vice President Dorothy Pflughaupt thanked the Choral Club for carrying the flags and asked one person from the Grievance Committee, one from the Investigating Committee and one from the Rules and Regulations Committee to carry the

flags next month. Dorothy asked for comments on having an Adult Achievement Day (AAD) in January 1999. This would include contests for food and skits — similar to Youth Achievement Day. It would also include a pot luck lunch, prizes and fun. Plans were also discussed to name a "Mr. and Mrs. Lodge 88 Czech Day" at Czech Day in October. More details, later.

Second Vice President Tillie Helmcamp welcomed the visitors from Temple and commented on Dorothy's suggestion for AAD. She also commented on the idea of before meeting entertainment which proved to be very good in the past. Secretary-Treasurer Melanie Spies read the Consolidated Income Statement. Melanie also reported that cookbooks are now available.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Larry Pflughaupt reported that eyeglasses were being collected and that the next AARP classes would be August 20-21; October 15-16; and December 3-4, 1998. Members are encouraged to sign up at the September meeting for Tarok classes which are set to begin on September 21, 1998. He reported that the folk dancers will perform at the October meeting and that we would be collecting non-perishable food items for needy families at the November meeting.

Youth Leader Barbara L. Gonzales reported that the 25 young people from Lodge 88, Houston who attended camp had a great time. This year's camp was highlighted by a side trip to Garner State Park for hiking and tubing. She reported that the young people participated in State Youth Achievement Day in Temple and returned with eight winners out of 18. Barbara expressed her gratitude to all who helped in the kitchen while Nat was ill. She reported that he is doing better and thanked everyone who send cards and prayers to them.

Parliamentarian Mildred Holeman thanked everyone for their help during the past year.

Committee Reports

Entertainment Committee - Betty Theiss reported that August is going very well. Betty reflected on the past three dances and reviewed the upcoming dance schedule. Betty thanked Barbara and Nat Gonzales and Melanie Spies for opening the kitchen for Sunday dances.

Audit Committee - Marcil Malek reported that the books for May and June were found to be in order and motioned that they be accepted; seconded by Jerry Ennis. Motion carried.

Board of Trustees - Gunther Merkle thanked the board members who worked on the grounds: Paul Pflughaupt, Don Spies and Leander Pflughaupt. The board approved new white tablecloths.

Blueroom - Carol Liebscher reported that the Blueroom party with Brian Marshall was a huge success. The next party is scheduled for December 6, 1998 with the Moonriders playing.

The workers' party is set for September 20, 1998.

Birthday Club Sisters - Kathy Trefell gave special thanks to Flo Orsag for taking over while she was ill.

A bus trip to Austin is scheduled for September 18, 1998.

Men's Club - Tom Marsh reported that the Czech Day project will be a Fiesta Dinner to be held on September 1998, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Rules & Regulations - Gene Barcek reported that September meeting changes will be collected.

Dance Class - Edna Wehring reported that registration for fall classes would be September 17, 1998.

Choral Club - Gene Barcek reported that the group will begin rehearsal in September, District Five Director Louis Hanus reported on the awards banquet held for all sales representatives who passed their FIC course. He also noted that Lodge 142 had purchased property adjacent to their lodge for additional parking.

District Five President Evelyn Mikeska reported that the Fall Meeting was scheduled for September 9, 1998 and that a covered dish dinner would be served.

District Five Youth Counselor Marie Stayton reported that our young people did very well at State Youth Achievement Day and that she was proud of everyone's performance.

The following members were reported on the sick list: Hilda Tidwell, Jake Jacobs, Bernice Walberg and Pat Holeman.

Guide Helen Hegwood reported that there were 106 members present and five guests. Helen then led the members in singing "Happy Birthday" to 20 celebrants.

Beverage donors were Bill and Adella Hughes, Calvin and Flo Orsag, Charlie and Annabel Viet, Barbara and Nat Gonzales and Sydney and Georgie Jurchak.

Door Prizes were donated by Donna Clooney, Benny Kocich, Alice Bily, Kathy Trefell, Rose Mikeska.

Additional prizes were donated by Lanita Anglin and Barbara Rosenkranz from the Home Office. Prizes were won by: Gladys Havemann, Madeline Waldress, Ernest Anders, Helen Kubicek, Victor Mikeska, Betty Theiss, Annabel Viet, Linda Wehring, Edwin Gerlich, Adella Hughes, Sidney Jurchak, Royal Warnasch and Willie Wehring.

Our next meeting will be on September 14 at 7:30 p.m.

92, Fort Worth meets September 13; prepares to celebrate Czech Heritage Day Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, It seems that in the past few days, the Southern part of Texas has received lots of rain — but that kind of rain does not help except to fill the lakes and tanks for cattle. It is a shame that so much damage was caused by the flood.

Here in the central part of the state, we have not received any rain. Lawns and trees are turning brown and some are dying. You can water with city water but it contains chemicals that really do

Wednesday, September 9, 1998—VESTNIKJ9 not do much for the grass. So, we will continue to wait for the good Lord to send rains We have had a few things going'on at the lodge but I will wait to report on them until I receive more information.

Lots of members have waited for the Vestnik, but two times a year it is not printed. So, do not blame the postman for not receving the Vestnik.

Do not forget the meeting September 13 and that there will also be a covered dish dinner afterwards. I have not heard of any sickness or accidents, so I'm happy to report that.

Be sure to attend the next meeting and find out how the lodge is doing and what it will be happening in the future. Also, do not forget to buy the Czech Heritage Day prize drawing tickets. You may win the $500 prize or other gifts that will be awarded. Till next time, watch for children crossing the streets and roads now that school has started.

156, Baytown conducting canned food drive for holidays Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge 156 met on Tuesday, August 11, 1998 at the home of Edwin and Betty Martinka. We all enjoyed the fellowship, food and missed the members who did not attend.

This lodge is having monthly meetings now and we would like for all of our members to be aware of this so they can plan on attending these meetings.

For our next three meetings, our members need to be prepared to bring canned goods for the baskets we will be making for the needy for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Our next meeting will be September 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Pamela Kinney. We hope to see more of our members there.

Lodge 133, San Antonio Member Emil Matula Receives Bronze Star 50 Years After World War II

We

all learned history throughout our school careers, but this history lesson straight out of World War II is something that none of us ever learned.

Emil E. Matula was presented the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters on June 5 from Col. John C. Latimer, Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Infantry Center, for heroics he demonstrated in World War II. Matula enlisted in the Army in 1937. He served on active duty at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, until he reenlisted for overseas duty and was sent to Schofield Barracks in Hawaii where he was present for the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

His mortar platoon participated in the defense of the island of Oahu for the first three days after the bombing.

Matula went on to earn the Bronze Star in Guadalcanal for his leadership as first sergeant.

Matula landed at Luzon, Phillipines, with the 25th Infantry Division January 11, 1945. The division was committed to action February 1, 1945.

His company saw intense action February 3-8, when the 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, was assigned the mission of occupying the village of Lupau.

During the action, his company lost two officers and three platoon sergeants.

As a result of the losses, Matula assumed command of the two machine gun platoons, reorganized the platoons and made a second attack, which was repulsed by the Japanese forces.

After the battle ended, Matula was wounded by a Japanese sniper's bullet. He was hospitalized for 20 days.

In March of 1945, Matula returned to his unit. At that time, he was informed that he had been battlefield commissioned as a second lieutenant and he was reassigned to Company G, 35th Inf. Regt., as a platoon leader.

From March 3 to May 15, 1945, Matula's unit fought to clear the Japanese from the Carabello Mountains.

Matula was separated from the Army on August 15, 1945.

Prior to separation, Matula was given some ribbons for medals that were later mailed to him.

Matula's son, Emil Matula, Jr., wanted his father to actually be presented with an award, so he organized a presentation for the time that Matula would be here, since he currently lives in San Antonio, Texas.

"I found out about it two days ago," Matula said. "I didn't expect anything; I was taught to fight for our country."

Matula was awarded the Bronze Star during the war for carrying his company commander back to battalion headquarters after the commander got shot in the knee while he and Matula were helping another wounded soldier.

Matula started looking into the Bronze Star award he never received in 1980.

"In 1980, I started checking into it but all the records burned in a fire," Matula said.

"Finally, I got a file that had a list of awards from the Army reserve and I found a copy of the order for the Bronze Star in the file.

"I received ribbons after I left the combat zone and later a boxful of medals came in the mail," Matula explained.

"It's taken me so long to get this award, I had given up hope," Matula explained. "I'm thankful to Col. John Latimer and my son."

Matula has previously received three awards of the Bronze Star and two awards of the Purple Heart.

Matula was joined by his wife Evelyn, his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson.

The 80-year-old became a Lifetime Member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association in 1962. He has served as President of the Alamo Chapter, Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association and President of the San Antonio Chapter, Battlefield Commissioned Officer's Association.

In addition, he remains an active member of numerous church, civic and fraternal associations.

Mr. Matula is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe E. Matula. He enlisted in the army in 1937 and was separated from the service on August 15, 1945. Emil's parents moved from Granger to Texas City in 1945. Emil married Evelyn Motloch and they lived in Granger from October 1945, to September 1947.

In July 1947, Matula worked as Dr. Pepper salesman for the Pickoff Bottling Company. They built a home at 816 Lizzy Street in Taylor, Texas.

Matula went to work for Jewel Home Shopping Service in October 1949, serving the Williamson County Area.

In September 1955, he was transferred with the company to San Antonio and settled at 303 Gayle Avenue where he retired after 34 years of service with Jewel Tea Home Shopping Service.

The Matulas, who are members of Lodge 133, San Antonio, have three daughters and one son, Jarolyn (Matula) Popp, Kathy (Matula) Murley, Margaret (Matula) Schauffele, and Lt. Col. Emil E. Matula and Katheleen (Metzo) Matula and nine grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Sodek, 63, of Temple were at 2 p.m. Friday, June 19 at the Seaton Brethren Church with the Rev. Al Newby officiating.

Burial was in Seaton Cemtery.

She was born in Temple to Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hilliard. She graduated from Academy High School and attended Temple Junior College. She married Clarence Sodek on April 2, 1959. She worked at Scott and White Memorial Hospital, Mental Retardation in Temple, and as a security officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Survivors are her husband, Clarence Sodek of Temple; her mother, Mrs. J.W. Hilliard of Little River; two sons, Steven Sodek of Danbury and Scott Sodek of Sparks; two brothers, Jerry Wayne Hilliard of Belton and Donald Lynn Hilliard of Little River; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Seaton Brethren Church.

In Memory of William Paul Kopecky 1906 - 1998 William Paul Kopecky, 91, of Galveston passed away Monday, July 27, 1998, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Houston.

Funeral mass was at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica. Burial followed services at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Dickinson.

Visitation was after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at Malloy and Son Funeral Home. A rosary was at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Kopecky was born December 3, 1906, in Granger, Texas. He was a barber for over 50 years. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus No. 787, Msgr. Kirwin Council, past treasurer of the Galveston County Barber Union, a member of SPJST, and a resident of Galveston for more than 60 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica serving numerous years as an usher.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Kuchar Kopecky.

He is survived by his five loving daughters, Virginia Holmes and husband Robert of Houston, Patricia Stiglich and late husband John M. of Houston, Shirley Kopecky of Arlington, Texas, Sylvia Thompson and husband. Jarel 0. of Sante Fe, and Alice Imhoff and husband John of Houston; 12 grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Pallbearers were Robert M. Holmes, John Michael Stiglich, Charles Andres Stiglich, Jarel 0. Thompson, John Ray Imhoff, and Gene William Macalik.

Honorary pallbearers were Willieam Dean Holmes, Robert Marion Holmes, John Matthew Stockton, Vincent P. Stiglich, Jr. and Kenneth Wayne Macalik.

Memory of Rudolph Lutonsky In

Rudolph Lutonsky, 91, of Taylor, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at the Taylor Care Center.

Mr. Lutonsky was a farmer and a lifetime resident of the Taylor area. He was a veteran serving in the Army Air Corp. He was a member of the SPJST Lodge 29 and the First Church of Psychic Science.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and five brothers.

Survivors include his nephews and nieces, Roy Lutonsky of Huntsville, Alabama, Luddy Lutonsky of Deming, New Mexico, Mrs. Ella Zak Evans of San Antonio, Mrs. Helen Lutonsky Dudley of Las Vegas, Nevada, Mrs. Janice Lutonsky Nelson of Anthony, New Mexico, Mrs. Shirley Zak Woodard of Deming, New Mexico, Mrs. Jean Mikeska of Rogers, Texas, and Georgia Ann Holly Kelley of Crane, Texas.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m.

Saturday, August 1, 1998, at Condra Memorial Chapel with the Rev. P. John Caporusso officiating. Burial followed in the Taylor City Cemtery.

In Memory of Evelyn Minzenmayer Evelyn Minzenmayer, 82, of Taylor, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Seton Hospital in Austin.

She was a lifelong resident of the Taylor area. For 10 years, she worked at the HEB Gold Stamp Redemption Center. She was a member of St. Anne's Altar Society and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolf Minzenmayer on January 23, 1988.

In Memory of Frank Pokorny Frank Pokorny, 94, of Taylor died Sunday, August 9, 1998, at the Rosewood Nursing Home in Taylor.

He was born March 12, 1904, in the Polanka community, the son of John Pokorny and Thereza Safarik Pokorny.

On February 24, 1925, he was married to Minnie Novosad.

Mr. Pokorny was a lifelong resident of the Williamson County area. He was a farmer for 41 years. He was an active, devoted member of the Taylor Brethren Chruch, where he served on the Board of Elders through the years and was also a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor, where he served on the Property Committee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Thereza Pokorny; three sisters, Mary Mikulencak, Frances Kaspar, Frantiska Pokorny; and three brothers, Joe, John, and Anton Pokorny.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie Pokorny of Taylor; daughter, Velma Kubala and husband, Alvin of Burnet, Texas; grandchildren, Dawn Urbanek and husband Gordon of Austin; greatgrandchildren, Weston and Wade Urabanek of Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A prayer service was at 7 p.m.

Monday, August 10 at the Taylor Brethren Church.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, August 11, 1998, at Taylor Brethren Church with the Rev. James Hejl officiating. Burial followed in Taylor City Cemtery.

In Memory of Lillian Socha Williams Holubec Lillian Socha Williams Holubec, 78, of San Angelo died Friday, August 7, 1998, at her home.

Rosary was held August 9 in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services were at 4 p.m. August 10 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, officiated by Father Charles Greenwell.

Burial was in Garden of Memories in Ballinger.

Lillian was born October 16, 1919, in Hallettsville to Fred Socha and Julie Kubus Socha.

Lillian was employed in 1943 with San Angelo Truck and Tractor. In 1948, she went to work for Ballinger Truck and Tractor. Lillian was married in 1949 to Clyde Austin Williams, and he preceded her in death in December, 1974. In 1969, she began selling insurance for SPJST. She was a member of Lodge 160, San Angelo.

Lillian married Alfons Holubec in January, 1979, in Ballinger.

Survivors include her husband, Alfons Holubec of San Angelo; a daughter, Peggy Ann Williams of San Angelo; two sons, Dan Williams and wife Irene of Ballinger and David F Williams and wife Teresa of Lubbock; one stepson, Bill Holubec and wife Pam of San Angelo; 12 grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Sylvia Barta of San Angelo; two brothers, George Soch and Laddie Socha, both of San Angelo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Craig Lennefelt, Neal Socha, Mark Barta, Ronnie Socha, Larry Socha, and Mike Williams.

ALBIE NESUDA. Graveside services for Albie Nesuda were held at noon Saturday, August 8 in Myrtle Cemetery with Rev. John Dick officiating under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary with the following serving as pallbearers: Gary Kudrna, Glenn Kudrna, Chris Kudrna, Kevin Kudrna, Brian Nesuda, Tyler Kudrna, Daniel Kudrna, and Chaz Kudrna.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 7 in the Keever Chapel.

Mrs. Nesuda, 90, died Wednesday, August 5, 1998, at the IOOF Nursing Home in Ennis.

She was born September 27, 1907, in Ennis, the daughter of Anton and Barbara Cvach Trojacek. She was reared in Ennis and attended Lone Oak schools. On September 12, 1926, she was married to Edwin C. Nesuda of Ennis. After their marriage they lived on the Nesuda farm in Ennis. She was employed by Storey Mfg. in Ennis for several years. Mr. Nesuda preceded her in death January 8, 1970. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church, the Sokol, SPJST Lodge 25, RVOS, Farm Bureau, and the Ennis Sewing Circle.

She is survived by a son and his wife, David and Barbara Nesuda of Plano; two daughters, Evelyn Mae Slovak and Dorothy and her husband Louis Kudrna, all of Ennis; a sister, Stacie Hejny of Ennis; a brother-in-law, Frank Laznovsky; a sister-in-law, Wilma Nesuda; seven grandchildren, Gary and his wife Pauline Kudrna of Ennis, Glenn and his wife Alvoy Kudrna of Ennis, Chris and his wife Antonella Kudrna of San Diego, Kevin Kudrna and Brian Nesuda, both of

Expressicn of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 80, Holland, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother,

JOSEPH ZAJICEK, of Rogers, who passed away on Sunday, August 23, 1998 at his residence at the age of 94.

Brother Zajicek was born to John Zajicek, Sr. and Marie Toninger Zajicek in Czechoslovakia. He moved to the United Sates in 1910. He graduated from Texas A&M at Arlington in 1927. He was a rancher and a pecan grower for many years. He worked with the Soil Conservation Service for 10 years and served as president of Bartlett Electric Co-Op for 31 years.

He worked at Brazos Electric in Waco for several years. He became a Mason in 1935 and was a member and deacon at County Line Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Grace Sever Zajicek of Rogers; one stepson, Leon Kruse of Houston; three stepdaughters, Alice Blakemore of Round Rock, Amanda Quiel of California and Frances Webb of Crosby; two brothers, Raymond Zajicek and Leopold Zajicek, both of Holland; two sisters, Stella Mainord of Holland and Emma Macek of Zabcikville; 13 step-grandchildren; and 22 step-great-grandchildren.

Services for Brother Zajicek were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 1998 at First Baptist Church of Rogers with the Rev. Luther Dillard and the Rev. Cus Hayworth officiating. Burial was in Val Verde Cemetery.

Expression of Sympathy Funeral services for Milton "Mike" F. Dusek, 75, of SharOn Turnpike, were held on Friday, June 5, 1998, at St. Thomas Church in Goshen Connecticut.

Mr. Dusek died June 3, 1998 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Connecticut.

A corporal with the U.S. Army Artillery, he was stationed at Corregidor, Philippine Islands, then

transferred to Bataan, where he was captured. He was part of the Bataan Death March on April 9, 1942 and remained a Prisoner of War for 42 months, during which time he was sent to Manchuria to work as a military slave in a machine tool and die factory.

Among the awards he received were the Purple Heart, the World War H Campaign Medal and the POW Medal.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Goshen; two daughters and sons-inlaw, Kay and Fred Breakell of Goshen and Kateri "Kate" and Joseph Veillette of Morris; two brothers, Frank Dusek of Harlingen, Texas and Hubert Dusek of Rio Hondo, Texas; a sister, Gardena Kristof, of Harlingen, Texas; five grandchildren, Donald and Edward Breakell, Janelle Skilton, Stacy and Corrine Veillette; and two great-grandchildren, Miranda and Joshua Skilton.

Interment was held in St. Thomas Cemetery with Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Frank Picha was born November 18, 1913 in West. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and worked as a marker for Williamson and Dickir for approximately 30 years. He retired in 1978.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, SPJST Lodge 154, The American Legion and many senior clubs. He was also an avid dancer.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Viola, in 1971; Margie in 1981; and Mary in 1988.

He is survived by a son, John Picha, and his wife, Patricia, of Fort Worth; daughters, Joann Wallace and husband Ronnie of Benbrook, Kathy Halverson and husband, Eric, of Benbrook and Betty Shambuger and husband, Joe, of Fort Worth; a sister, Christine Urban of West; five grandchildren and a friend; Lee Jones, of Arlington, Texas.

Silent Auction Items Requested The District Two Youth Club will once again have a silent auction.

Donations for the auction will be very much appreciated. Proceeds from the auction will help to defray expenses for our lock-in which will be held November 14.

Much more is planned for the fall meeting. We hope to organize several

volleyball teams to participate in the state tournament on November 14th.

We will be practicing on this day and schedule other practices. We will also have several contests, including races, a watermelon seed spitting contest, horseshoes and much more.

We all keep saying summer will still be here in October. If that's the case, we can still enjoy the day in the water.

Swimming is available. Remember to ring your swim suits. Lifeguards are provided.

Youth members, please encourage your parents, grandparents and friends to join us at BLORA. All of the games and contests will be for everyone — adults included.

Extend a Challenge Challenge your moms and grandmothers — and even your dads and grandpas — to enter the ornament contest. Adults are also encouraged to enter the jelly-jam contest — and be sure to include your recipe.

I hope you will all support the change of the fall meeting It will be a great time to be able to just visit with other district members if you're not interested in the contests.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club Welcomes New Member Welcome aboard to Gerald Marcaurele, the newest member of the Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club.

We discussed attending the adult meeting, August 16th, and having an ice cream social on August 23rd to encourage other children to join our group.

Michelle Kunz, Sheila and Olivia Wall and Beverly, Leslie and Ross Juranek attended the adult meeting.

Adults approved giving the youth group $300. They were very supportive of our group trying to increase in size and having the present members stay active.

At the August 23rd ice cream social, one child expressed an interest in joining the youth club. Youth Leader Michelle Kunz will check on having the young person join our club.

Michelle led the meeting and read the treasurer's report and minutes from the July meeting. Youth Club officers were then elected. Afterwards, we discussed the Christmas ornament contest that would take place during the district meeting. We also discussed making Halloween crafts for the two local nursing homes. We will start on them at the next meeting. We also looked through craft books for ideas.

Adult members of SPJST who attended the social and meeting were James Bacak, Karel Matejka and Rose Schipula. James Bacak assisted in getting the hall ready. Karel Matejka brought gifts for all of the children attending and Rose Schipula brought many craft books. After adjourning the meeting, we all enjoyed ice cream, cake and punch.

Our next meeting will be September 9th at the SPJST Hillje hall at 6:30 p.m. We will also post this in our local newspaper.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club member reports on August meeting, State YAD Dear Members, We had our monthly Youth Club meeting at Lodge 88 on Wednesday, August 19. We talked about going to the Heights Towers on September 12 and visit the residents on Grandparents Day. We also talked about having a pizza party afterwards.

We welcomed new youth club member Michael Zatopek. After the meeting, we had cookies and drinks.

I would like to thank Stephanie Boyce for competing with me in the junior group talent. I had fun.

I would also like to thank Kristen Bender, my queen, for asking me to be her duchess. It was very exciting.

Pivonka Language Class sets fall activities The fall season is ushering in a new menu of events that the Bernard Pivonka Language Class is sure will whet the cultural appetites of any who have sampled the rich flavor of Czech cultural cuisine.

Fall Classes Begin Starting Tuesday, September 17, the Czech language classes will resume at Sokol Houston, located at 1314 West Patton. Class hours are from 7:30 to 9 p.m. every Thursday. Classes last approximately 10 to 12 weeks with breaks occurring at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. No instructional or textbook fees are requited. Travel tips, travel videos, small group conversational practice, and special emphasis on phonetical pronunciation all help to complete a well-rounded language instructional program.

Only at SPJST Lodge 88: Egg Decorating Classes On consecutive Saturdays: September 19 and 26, the Pivonka Language Class is presenting Czech decorating classes from 1 to 3 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 88, located at 1435 Beall Street in the Heights. Susie and Noreen Tolman, who demonstrate the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures, will travel from San Antonio to demonstrate and teach their authentic Czech craftsmanship and techniques. "Music from Prague" to benefit statewide groups The SPJST has designated four groups as Statewide charities in 1998.

They are as follows: The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc.; The Czech Cultural and Community Center; The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas; and The Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children.

In 1998, the SPJST will focus its statewide fund raising efforts to support the goals and objectives of these groups. The first step in this process is raising an awareness of these organizations, what they do and their plans for the future.
