A Taxing Issue

In visiting with our County Tax Appraisal District office last week, I learned that they will be sending out property tax statements in October.

Those of you who have lodge buildings to support know what that means. 'Tis the season to pay taxes . . . There really isn't any other option - or is there?

It's a subject worth looking into. In recent weeks, I've talked to several lodge leaders about their annual ad valorem tax assessments. The consensus: They represent a heavy. burden for lodges seeking to maintain facilities and still trying to contribute to the betterment of their community.

So, what can we do? In an effort to reduce their annual assessment, some lodges have contacted their county tax appraisal district offices and requested reevaluations of their property. Of course, as I was informed by our local tax appraisal district office, that reevaluation could go either way and actually result in an increase in what you have to pay.

That's one option.

Another option: To pursue statewide legislative action and a blanket property tax exemption for lodges acting in the fraternal interests of their community. Could that ever happen?

Let's not rule it out. In fact, the precedent exists: When Texans went to the polls in November 1995, the ballot included several proposed constitutional amendments aimed either at establishing or increasing various property tax exemptions. Amendment Two, had it passed, would have authorized property tax exemptions for the Grand Lodge of the Masonic Fraternity and its 916 lodges in Texas.

The amendment failed. The final vote count was 333,528 votes in favor and 385,133 against. In other words, it was close.

Even though it failed to pass, it helped to raise public awareness of the tax issues and challenges that face fraternal groups. Supporters defended the amendment on the grounds that, on an annual basis, their lodges spend a lot of money on charitable works and operate many community projects, such as literacy programs, learning centers and hospitals. Moreover, as advocates explained, extending the exemption would not have significantly impacted property tax revenues. Furthermore, they stated that Texas taxpayers would actually benefit, since many of their lodge buildings were historic landmarks and the exemption would help fund preservation.

Those opposing the amendment maintained that if the Masonic lodges met the qualifications of a charity as they are spelled out under Article Eight of the Texas Constitution, they could be granted an exemption by local governments under existing provisions without changing the constitution.

The legislation which led to the proposed amendment was sponsored by District 28 Senator John Montford of Lubbock. During his 14-year tenure as a member of the Texas Senate, Mr. Montford wrote and passed 520 bills and Senate Joint Resolutions and became recognized as one of the state's most knowledgeable leaders in the field of Texas constitutional revision.

Since August, 1996, he has been serving as the Chancellor of Texas Tech University and Texas Tech Medical Center.

Last week I had the chance to visit by telephone with Ben Lock, who serves as Executive Assistant to Chancellor Montford. Mr. Lock also served as Mr. Montford's assistant in the Senate.

According to Mr. Lock, the legislative effort was as good an idea then as it is today. "Before the amendment went to the public for a vote, it first had to receive a two-thirds majority vote in the Texas Senate and a two-thirds majority vote in the Texas House of Representatives," he explained. "The legislative support was there."

I asked Mr. Lock to speculate. If the legislation had been broadened - to include other fraternal societies would it have made a difference in the statewide election?

"Actually, that was a consideration-that broadening the exemption would have generated more public support," said Mr. Lock. "At the same time, we were concerned that it would have caused local governments, fearing a loss in tax revenues, to campaign against the amendment. It was a real balancing act," he stated.

According to Mr. Lock, the 1995 legislation evolved as a direct result of efforts made by the Masonic Fraternity on behalf of its members and lodges. It was a worthy effort and one that almost became law. Perhaps, in this story, there is a timely message for our own Society - and indeed, for all Texasbased fraternals - that by pooling our efforts and actively addressing challenging issues such as ad valorem taxation, we can make a positive difference for our lodges and the communities that they seek to serve.

The District One and District Two graduates, who began their studies in May of 1997, were applauded for their

persistence in completing the challenging course. Two District Five FICs also received their certificates. FIC certificates were presented by District One Director Donnie Victorick, District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and State Field Representative Keith Gatewood.

entry must consist of six average-sized kolaches of the same filling on a disposable tray or plate. They must be made by one person. If you won last year, you may enter this year but not the same filling.

Your entry in the needlework contest must be made entirely by hand and be either knitting, crocheting, embroidery, or needlepoint. Once again, if you won last year, you may enter again but not the same item.

You may enter all three categories or

only one or two, but you must be at least 18 years old and be present at the time of announcement of awards.

Registration will begin from 11 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. with judging to start at 11:45 a.m.

Readers Write Miss SPJST Meribeth Novak reports on trip to Czech Republic Congratulations to all first place winners at State YAD! I recently spent 24 days in Prague through the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute. What experienced was a laid-back, educational tour witnessing many angles of Czech life. For the price that we paid, I believe most of us agreed that the trip was a bargain. We visited the crystal factory, the porcelain factory, tried eight kinds of wines at the wine cellar while a Moravian band played for us. A few days later, we learned how Staropramen Pivo was made while a different band played for us. We visited numerous castles and saw folklore dances. We visited a Czech museum of art. We traveled to Karlovy Vary for a day and saw the springs and the famous Grand Hotel Pupp. We learned and experienced Prague on Jan Hus Day, a national holiday. We took a tour bus and traveled to many different cities and stayed in nice hotels. All of our meals were catered to us at the dorms where we stayed at Charles University. We also enjoyed many meals at impressive restaurants while we were traveling to the outer cities. We learned the myths of Prague through a Black Light Theater production. We had our graduation ceremony on the Vltava River on a yacht.

However, more importantly than all

of the sightseeing were our Czech classes taught by wonderful teachers of the University. Every morning from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. we diligently studied, tried to roll our tongues and tried not to cry when we saw the evil r with hook (r). I was in the beginners class. There were three levels—beginner for those who had never read or seen any Czech.

Intermediate for those who grew up with the Czech language but could not write or read. Advanced for those men and women who were masters of the language but were learning the sayings and etymology of the language.

The experiences and people that I met on this trip will forever be engrained in my memory. I encourage all Czechs, especially senior citizens who have not traveled to the Czech Republic to contact Thadious Polasek about information on next year's trip.

Most of the people on the trip were over age 50. Thadious is a wonderful tour guide because he has been leading tour groups for over 12 years in the Czech Republic. He had many key friends and inside tips which made our tour run more smoothly and allowed our tour group to experience more than any other tour group would experience.

Congratulations once again to all state winners and I hope to hear from many of you soon!

Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on August meeting Hi! This month's meeting was short, so to speak. We all mostly enjoyed some good food that Al and Georgie Soukup furnished. We ate fried chicken, buttered potatoes, green beans, and this wonderful salad brought by Brother Jerry Kucera that his wife, Dorothy, was kind enough to fix and send. Then, we all "pigged out" on all the wonderful desserts that the ladies brought. Thanks to everyone who brought food. It was delicious!

Since our monthly meeting was on a Friday evening, our meal was served prior to our meeting. With filled stomachs, the meeting was opened about 8 p.m. by Brother Robert Dobecka, President. The pledge of allegiance to the flag was led by the youth group.

Sister Georgie Soukup reported that 29 members and four guests were present, making a total of 33 at this meeting.

We had a very nice crowd and welcome all of you to come back to our next meeting and also to attend our socials every first and third Fridays.

Welcome to two new members that were present, Joe and Dorothy Dvorsky. It is very nice to have you with us and we look forward to seeing you both often.

Two of our guests for the evening were Scott Simmonds and Brian Neal with the Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children, Inc. in Temple, Texas. It was a real pleasure to have these gentlemen come visit with us, which our SPJST Lodge 6, Inc. presented them with a check for $200 (photo to follow later). Scott presented us with a video on what the retreat is and how it operates. It is a retreat for children who are chronically ill and is nestled on its own 125-acre tract on the Lampasas River in the scenic hill country of west Bell County, Texas.

The Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children receives no government funds, and is dependent for improvements and support on donations from interested friends and organizations.

The retreat, conceived by Jim D. Bowmer and Daurice Bower was carved out of adjoining Bowmer ranch inspired by their grandson, Charles Bowmer Schreiner V, who died of a heart ailment at the age of 11 months, and their grandchildren, Scott and Dan Simmonds and Julie Neal, who are diabetics. The retreat is for the children, their friends and families, under the supervision of charitable hospitals, to enjoy the splendors of nature, swimming, hiking, riding, fishing, and just play to their hearts content, in a nonhospital atmosphere.

Speaking of correspondence, I would like to thank Sister Barbara Rosenkranz, SPJST State FAC, FIC, for her words of kindness to me on July 22. I especially enjoyed the "original" note card you used. It was neat!

The treasurer's report was given by Sister Peggy Dobecka. She also gave the youth report. Sister Dobecka thanked all that helped and supported the youth at our lodge picnic. It was reported that the youth attended camp at Camp Val Verde and enjoyed themselves. It was also reported that the lodge has some winners from the youth club at State YAD. Congratulations to all the winners! Checks were presented to the youth winners, Christi Sparkman, Whitney Dobecka, Traci Dobecka, Celia Dobecka, Brittany Angelo, and Julie Moravec. Special congratulations to Brittany and Julie as this is their first year to be in the youth club and first year to enter YAD competition.

Sister Dobecka stated that the youth will be in the Westfest Parade. She also reported that kolaches will be baked Saturday, August 22, starting at 6:30 a.m. The youth club also has a new member, Julia Tucker, daughter of David and Staci Dobecka.

It's Time for Westfest!

Brother George Straten gave his report. He also reported that he would be bread baker for the Westfest.

Anyone that wants to help him will be welcome. He also reported that potato peeling will begin around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 4 in preparation of Westfest. Workers will be needed at this time.

Thanks to Sister Georgia Soukup for giving Sister Hattie Kaska's report. It was reported that get-well cards were sent to Brothers Jerry Kucera, Bill Skerik, Johnnie Krizan, and George Sulak. Also, one was sent to Sister Lydia Dobecka. Hope all of you are feeling much better. Sympathy cards were sent to Nita and Freddie Gerik, Brittney and Taylor Angelo.

Those celebrating birthdays this month were Steve Neckar and Brother B.J. Hlavaty, which we all sung "Happy Birthday" to them. Door prizes were then drawn, with Sister Nelda Hlavaty winning the $5 door

Dear Members and Friends, Plans are underway to observe "Czech Heritage Week" a week early with a Family Night kick-off celebration on October 18 at Werner's Restaurant in Shiner, starting at 4 p.m., The event will include the election and installation of officers.

Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. followed by speakers who will talk about the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in LaGrange.

Our second quarterly meeting was held June 5. President Greg Nors opened the meeting with a welcome for all in attendance. Jana Vaculik led us in reciting the pledge of allegiance to our flag. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Michael Shane Matusek who died on March 15. Our sympathy is extended to his family and friends. May he rest in eternal peace.

Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the March 13 meeting. These were approved as read. She also read two items of correspondence: a letter from Lanita Anglin regarding an Internal Revenue Service audit and a thank-you from Ray and Henrietta Barton.

Sister Maxine Sefcik gave her financial secretary's report and her FAC report. Both were approved as read.

Treasurer Freddie Kaluza distributed copies of his treasurer's report. His report was also approved as read.

Audit Committee Chairperson Mona Zahirniak reported that the Audit Committee met and found all records to be in order.

Our next meeting will be held on September 11 at 7 p.m. Our annual meeting with the election of officers will be held November 6 and our Christmas Party will be held December 6.

This year, Lodge 54 had eight senior graduating from high schools: Brandon Kaluza, Carla Kasik, Brian Muska, Robyn Podsednik, and Jeffrey Veselka, all from West High School; Alvin Mynar from Connally High; Renee Scheler from Abbott High; and Whitney Scott from Robinson High.

Rachael Podsednik graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She has accepted a position in the ShockTrauma ICU at Memorial-Herman in Houston.

Robyn Podsednik was the valedictorian of her graduating class and received eight scholarships, including an SPJST scholarship. Alvin Mynar graduated with honors. Renee Scheler was the valedictorian of her class and received eight scholarships, including the SPJST scholarship. Whitney Scott was a member of the National Honor Society.

Lindsay Kolar and Jana Vaculik, who will be juniors at West High School, received awards. Lindsay was a recipient of micro-computer applications and advanced world history. Jana achieved third place in current events on the district level. Jon Vaculik received a perfect attendance award from West Middle School. If there were any members omitted, please accept my apology. This is all the information that I had. Our heartiest congratulations to all of these!

I would also like to add that my niece, Dr. Amy Jez, graduated from A&M with a degree in veterinary medicine. She is an SPJST member of another lodge. Needless to say, I am very proud of her.

Another member, Brad Uptmore, a student at Vanguard in Waco, has been selected to attend the National Youth Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. His sister, Kristen, helped the West Lady Trojans softball team win the Class AAA State Runner-Up Trophy.

FAC Maxine Sefcik thanked Freddie Kaluza, Mona Zahirniak, Terry Sefcik, Greg Nors, Jan Vaculik, and family as well as Lidka Vaculik for assisting her, also Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and wife Mary for attending the 50-year membership ceremony/dinner held May 24. Thanks to Mona Zahirniak for preparing the entire meal, plus baking the cake and furnishing the decorations. This was a wonderful party and the food was delicious.

Our Everyday Hero Achievement Awards were presented to Irene Plsek, Anne Emery, Lil Matus, Ray Matus, Mona Zahirniak, Freddie Kaluza, Janice Kaluza, Maxine Sefcik, and Lillie Mynar. The awards were a courtesy of the SPJST Home Office submitted by State FAC Barbara Rosenkranz. We indeed thank Barbara for her thoughtfulness.

Several Lodge 54 members attended the District Three Local Lodge Incentive Program presented at Lodge 6, Cottonwood by Barbara Rosenkranz. We found this to be very informative and just a lot of fun.

79, Corpus Christi celebrates mortgage burning August 22 Lodge

It was 20 years ago, in August, 1978, when the SPJST Lodge 79-Sokol Hall was dedicated. Now the loan is all paid up and there is a mortgage burning celebration coming on Saturday, August 22. Everyone is welcome to celebrate with us.

The day starts with a delicious Czech dinner which will be served from 12 noon to 2 p.m. for only $5.50 per plate. The dinner will consist of pork roast, dumplings, and sauerkraut.

Kolaches will be available for dessert—a must for a Czech dinner.

The program is from 1 to 1:30 p.m. with a performance by the San Antonio Polish Dancers. The official mortgage burning ceremony with dignitaries from SPJST, Sokol and others is from 2 to 2:30 p.m. The Sokol gymnasts will put on an exhibition and performance from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Socializing and listening to recorded

Czech music is from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The San Antonio Polish Dancers perform the second time from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

To top the day off, there is a dance from 6 p.m. to midnight with music by the Majek's Orchestra and Bud Whittington with non-stop music for only $5 per person. There will be door prizes awarded during the dance and you must be present to win. By the way, the Majek Orchestra played at the dedication 20 years ago, and they are still playing!

87, Temple lacking alliteration

Temple's Lodge 87 met in our usual location on Tuesday, July 14. The minutes were approved as read as was Treasurer Entrop's financial report and we were pleased to accept four new members into our lodge. They are Richard Archer and six-month-old twins Brett and Brandon Taylor from Temple and John Stanley Troy of Luling.

Our FAC, Sister Thelma Groppell, reported that July included three birthdays with familiar names—Treasurer Daryl Entrop's, former Reporter Keith Gatewood's, and yours truly, Lauren Kacir's. We were also amused by the July causes—Anti-boredom, Purposeful Parenting, and Baked Bean Awareness!

We reviewed photos of the permanent horseshoe pits in East Bernard, as we contemplated hosting a District Two horseshoe tournament in October.

50-Year Pin Presentation October 13 Plans are moving ahead for our 50year pin presentation and celebration on October 13. Sister Bertha Capps is our food committee chairman and chose FAC Thelma Groppell and newest active Sister Diane Troy to assist her. We will be having a general clean-up day with a concurrent picnic prior to the party. Meanwhile, President Alford will chair the entertainment committee and has promised to include the 1948 Hit Parade among the dancing music.

We reviewed the state of our lodge's plumbing and roof. We 'are awaiting estimates for improving both and will have more information at our next meeting, when we will share salads and sorbet!

92, Fort Worth hosts August 30 Polka Mass Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, This will be a first at our Lodge 92.

Saint Paul Catholic Church will have a

Polka Mass on August 30, 1998. Mass starts at 11:30 a.m. Then, after Mass, there will be a dinner, consisting of roast beef, sausage and trimmings that go with a meal. Dinner will include a dance ticket. Both will be $10 per person. Children's plates will be $3. You can just buy a dinner ticket for $6.

Then, if you care to dance, it will only be $6. So if you want a bargain, buy the $10 ticket. Children under 12 years of age will be free. The dance will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Music will be furnished by the Henry Rezcek band from Ennis. Then, there will be a Tejano band to play for one hour from 4 to 5 p.m. There will be a cake walk during intermission for those who would like to win a cake.

The Dallas singers will sing the Mass with some Fort Worth ladies and men.

92, Fort Worth invites you to Czech Heritage Day Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, I am sure many of you remember when we did not have air conditioning.

It did not seem to bother us working in the summertime in the cotton fields and with other outside chores. But now, times have changed and we just cannot get along without the cool air we have in our homes and stores and lodge halls. I guess this is what you call progress. Television keeps us home and from not attending lodge meetings and dances at SPJST lodges.

Life is short so we should have more friendship and visit members and being around people.

I would like to let all of you know that soon it will be our annual Czech Heritage Day here in Fort Worth on Saturday, September 19. The committee has planned a very nice program for that day. There will be contests of different kinds, accordion music, raffle tickets for cash prizes, a fine dinner will be available, and pastries plenty.

Music will be played during the day and evening by two good bands, Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six from Pflugerville, Texas, and the popular Jodie Mikula from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Our Memory Makers will sing both Czech and English songs at 12 noon.

The parade of Czech costumes is at 6:30 p.m. Sokol group will perform at 7 p.m. The Czech dancers from West will put on a show at 7:30 p.m. Later in the day, the kitchen will be having the Hubenak hamburgers and sandwiches. The ladies of Lodge 92 will have pastries for sale all day.

Our Czech Heritage Day is for one day only but it will be a day to remember for a long time. There have been some raffle tickets sent to members that live out of the city and I am sure they will want to help our lodge with the expense that all lodges have. 133, San Antonio reports on July meeting Lodge

Lodge 133, San Antonio held its regular meeting on Sunday, July 18 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. There were 18 members and one guest present.

Sick members include Don Netek and Viola Kurtz. We wish them a speedy recovery.

Couples celebrating wedding anniversaries in June and July were Don and Marie Netek (55 years), David and Kathy Murley (22 years), Marcella and Jaroslav Kleperlik (60 years), Paul and Eileen Heath (33 years), and Charlie and Carol Kutil (26 years).

Lodge 133 may be sponsoring a trip to the SPJST Museum in Temple during the fall. More information will be provided at a later date.

The monthly meeting of Lodge 161, La Parita-Jourdanton was August 9, 1998, at 3 p.m. at the Jourdanton State Bank Community Room with 11 members present.

Lodge 161 is excited to have State Field Representative Larry Wagner as a member of our lodge. Welcome, Larry!

Correspondence was received from Lodge 79, Corpus Christi inviting all to attend its mortgage burning celebration on August 22, 1998. Those planning to attend should check the Vestnik for details.

SFR Larry Wagner presented a check to Sales Representative Tillie Koch for top applications written in District Seven for July. (Earlier, he presented her a check for top insurance written in District Seven in June.)

SFR Wagner also praised Sales Representatives Linda Ramey for being the Number 11th producer in the state. Keep up the good work, Linda!

Discussion was held on activities our lodge could undertake: Kid's Fish Day in October, Atascosa County Fair in November, and "Stuff the Bus" in 1999. Members, we need your input on ways to become involved in our communities.

Bettie House is encouraging all to bring old eyeglasses to our meetings for the Lions Club.

CAM (Christian Assistance Ministry) is in dire need. Its cupboard is almost bare. Please bring food donations, especially dried beans, canned milk, rice, macaroni and cheese, soup, and peanut butter.

Those celebrating birthdays in August are Leann Zezula, Bettie House, Connie Rakowitz, and Joyce Neill. Anniversary celebrants are G.P. and Mildred Bridges (62 years) and Lloyd and Bettie House (40 years).

Refreshments were furnished by Lucy Zepeda, Milton and Tillie Koch, and Lloyd and Bettie House.

Hamilton. She is a little mixed up and we need to help her get used to the new place and find her way around.

We also made a bus trip to Bossier City, Louisiana, the weekend of July 27. Our luck may not have been all that good, but we feel that we made a down payment on the new hotel that they are building. We made a trip to Arlington to get together with Lenora, Craig, Sheron, and little Emilie to have dinner at the Golden Corral.

We are active in the American Legion here in Hamilton. I am also a member of the Hamilton Historical Commission and I spend about three hours a day at the Hamilton Genealogy Center. We are busy publishing family history books. I just finished printing and binding over 200 books and each had over 500 pages.

Remember, I told you about the American English and the way we express ourselves. So when we go to town shopping, are we going uptown or are we going downtown? Smile!

204, Stephenville planning projects to increase lodge visibility

Wednesday morning Different churches had services for the residents. We welcomed Rev. Linda O'Neil of Needville United Methodist Church.

Dear Members, The, regular monthly meeting of Lodge 204, Stephenville was held Tuesday, August 4. The food was delicious. We discussed the future of the lodge and planned some projects that could help make the lodge more active and also ways to let the public know what SPJST is and what it can do for the community.

We are looking forward to next month's meeting and hoping to have more members present and can help plan the future of the lodge.

Annual Westfest Taroky Tournament September 5 Tenth

The Directors of Westfest will again host a Taroky Tournament in conjunction with the Westfest celebration. The tournament will be held at West Community Center in West, Texas, on Saturday, September 5, 1998. The tournament is open to all interested taroky players, ladies and gentlemen, 18 years of age or older.

Entry fee will be $17.50 per person with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and play starting at 9 a.m. Play should conclude about 5:30 p.m. Kolaches and coffee will be served during registration. Lunch is included in the registration fee and will be served at the community center. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top four players. Play will continue for all players throughout the tournament. The top four players after six rounds will be awarded first, second, third and fourth place honors.

Preregister by August 28 All persons wishing to enter should pre-register by submitting their name and address to Westfest Taroky Tournament, P. 0. Box 70, West, Texas 76691 before August 28, 1998, so that adequate arrangements can be made for food and seating. District Four Youth Counselor reports on summer camp

the rules of bunko and were rolling the dice vigorously.

A new twist was given to the scavenger hunt this year. Campers were divided into groups and given clues of where to locate ten counselors hidden at various places around the camp for the Counselor Find. It was a real challenge since the counselors kept themselves concealed in such places as sitting on top of a toilet bowl, hidden behind chairs and towels, and especially the ones hiding on the Challenge Course. A shower and a few minutes rest following this activity got everyone ready for the Saturday night party.

Dear Readers, District Four campers and chaperones packed cool clothes and headed to Camp Lone Star on July 17 fora "fiesta time." The temperature was high but so was the enthusiasm by all of the campers. Our seven-hour trip to LaGrange included a sack lunch at Lake Buchanan. We shared our lunch with the fish, cooled off our feet in the water, and then were back on the road.

Upon arrival at camp, everyone unloaded at the cabins and then headed to the Celebration House to receive schedules, rules for camp, and name tags. In keeping with our "Fiesta" theme, everyone chose a Spanish nickname. These ranged from Pina to Friole to Caliente.

Once again, we shared our camp with District Seven, so it was time for volleyball with these two districts competing against each other. Afterwards, first-time campers were given a funny initiation that involved finding a piece of bubble gum in a plate of flour.

Since the temperature was around the century mark, it was time to jump in the pool. A refreshing swim was had by all. Ten o'clock brought the annual campfire ceremony. Six teens told us the meaning of "friend" and encouraged all campers to be a friend this weekend. Songs such as Pink Pajamas, I'm a Nut, and He's Got the Whole World in His Hands were enthusiastically sung under the threatening skies. Just after a snack of nachos, the younger, exhausted campers headed to their cabins for lights out. The teens played ping pong and got acquainted with the teens from District Seven as the rain came rushing down. It finally let up enough to get back to our cabins around 1:30 a.m.

The sun was back Saturday morning just in time for us to have a flag raising ceremony before breakfast. The morning activities included the teens trying to accomplish several "challenges" on the Challenge Course. The junior group participated in games with District Seven. Following a morning snack, the two age groups switched, with the teens enjoying games and juniors taking a challenge. After lunch, canoeing included the usual falling in the water. Bridget was trying to teach Robyn the correct way to crawl into a canoe but to no avail.

Robyn was able to dump them both into the lake. Many campers are getting to be very good with the bow and arrows as they participated in archery.

Following a snow cone break, we got involved in a fun game of "bunkomania." Everyone caught on quickly to

I would like to thank everyone who helped transport campers to and from camp. I would especially like to thank the leaders who assisted me in so many ways at camp. Betty Schwartz, Jill Miller, Melanie Block, Charlotte Dusek, Bridget Schwartz, and Robyn Jansa were all such a tremendous help.

I could not ask for a better group!

Thanks, kids, for being such great campers, too. Memories and friendships are made at camp that will stay with you for many years to come.

Maybe one day you will even come back to camp as a leader as Bridget and Robyn have!

Dear Vestnik Readers, I had very much fun at Camp Val Verde. My favorite part was when we boys bombed the girls (and of course, the boys won the battle). I hope I can go again next year.

Fiesta del Lone Star

Fiesta del Lone Star took place Saturday night in the Koop Center.

The center was decorated with brightly colored streamers, Fiesta cutouts, and pinatas. Everyone dressed in their colorful and fiesta attire. The party started with the girls making tissue paper bows for their hair and the boys making moroccos out of coke bottles. A big tortilla toss contest was followed by everyone participating in a Mexican hat dance. The fun dances of Chicken Dance, Shout, YMCA, and many more were enjoyed by all. The younger campers tried their hand at pinning the tail on the donkey before everyone headed to the pinatas. Candy was scarfed up by campers from the bull, pineapple and donkey pinatas. One camper even took the pineapple pinata home for a souvenir.

All of the partying made the younger campers pretty weary so they headed to the cabins after their midnight snack. The teens vowed to stay up all night! They participated in a session of "Annelid Hunting" which consisted of looking for a fuzzy worm in the dark. Even though a $10 reward was offered for the most found, no one was able to find any of the little fictitious worms. There was still some energy left for a game of volleyball.

But the all-night party finally came to an end around 3:30 a.m. Thank goodness!

Sunday brought more fun things to do. Campers created a doll with a flower pot and colored a cup for a remembrance from the 1998 camp as our craft. Voting took place for the District Four camp tee-shirt design with the winner being from Cabin 8.

The theme they came up with was "It's a Fiesta—not a Siesta." This will be used on our tee-shirt with everyone's names who attended camp. Swimming was enjoyed once more before we went to our last meal at camp.

We held a going-away ceremony for scampers who will not be returning next year. Wade Martin, Clay Jansa, Jennifer Block, and Kristi Braden will all be graduating and will be greatly missed at camp. They have been with

Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club reports on August meeting Dear Readers, The meeting of Lodge 107 came to order on the August 2, 1998. Clayton led the pledge. We had 13 members, two guests, and five adults.

The minutes were read and approved as corrected. We are proud to announce that we have three new members. Everyone who went to State YAD stood and told what they took and how they placed. I received three for talent. Ashleigh M. placed third and second in crafts. Christa D. placed two firsts in crafts. Congratulations to all who placed!

The youth leader reported that we will have a swim party at Floresville pool on Tuesday at 6 p.m. This will be the last day for the city pool to be open.

We also discussed for next month's activity to go bowling.

All members are to meet at the hall on September 20 for a short meeting and then head on to Ponderosa bowling alley.

After the meeting we played baseball. Thanks to Mrs. Moczygemba, everyone playing got a nice cup of

kool-aid. We soon were back inside playing hockey and chowing down on some food.

Youth Club reports on August meeting The August 9, 1998, meeting of Lodge 177, Academy Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Kristen Bender. Abbie Blevins led the Pledge of Allegiance. The register was read. There were 13 members and three adults present.

We had two new members, Colby Screws and Abbie Blevins. The minutes were read and approved. We discussed that District Two is going to Fiesta Texas on August 22. The youth will have a clean-up day on August 30.

We also discussed that we are going to the Bartlett Fun Fest in September.

Youth members enjoyed having cookie cake by Karen Bartek and other snacks by the youth club.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:40 p.m.

The next meeting will be September 13 at 2 p.m. at Lodge 177.

New Czech Passenger Lists available Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Volume VII, is now available. After many years of research, over 39,000 Czech immigrants who arrived in New York between 1887 and 1896 were identified. This was done by reviewing and abstracting 166 rolls of National Archives microfilm. Since there is no index for arrivals during this time period, this volume will be of interest to those who have ancestors who arrived during this time period. This book will be of special interest to Texans of Czech descent as there was no direct immigration through Galveston during this time period. This book includes an alphabetical listing of these Czech immigrants giving their names, age, place of origin, date of arrival, name of ship, and destination. The theme for the evening is Building the Future— Remembering the Past: "A Night of Czech Music, Dinner and Dance." Arthur M. Jansa are leading the $3.5 million Capital Development Campaign.

The dinner is to be prepared under the watchful eye of well-known Czech chef Rene Langer. Entertainment will be by Eva Jarolim on a Czech-made Grand Petrof piano followed by the big band sound of The Gus Lindemann Orchestra from La Grange, Texas.

All proceeds from the dinner will benefit the construction of the Czech Cultural Center and Museum. Located in Houston, Texas, the museum will be the first facility of its kind dedicated to Americans of Czech descent and their settlement in the United States and Texas. The Czech Cultural Center is incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit educational cultural organization with over 800 members.

"It is said there are over one million citizens within the State of Texas who are of Czech descent," states Czech Cultural Center chairman and founder Effie Rosene. "It is our goal to establish a center where not only CzechAmericans can learn more about their rich heritage but where our fellow Americans can celebrate our Czech culture and its contributions to America. At the same time, the Center wants to promote relations and trade with the lands of our ancestry, the Czech and Slovak Republics."
