Royalty, Youth Achievement Day at Temple's Mayborn Center to showcase SPJST's young talent P eople

from across Texas will converge on Temple's Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center on Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2 for the annual SPJST Royalty/Beseda State Youth Achievement Days.

State Royalty Competition Saturday, August 1 On Saturday, August 1, the 1997-98 SPJST State King J.J. Novak of Lodge 84, Dallas; State Queen Elizabeth Wagner of Lodge 4, Hallettsville; State Duke Michael Kenney of Lodge 84, Dallas; and State Duchess Elizabeth Vahalik of Lodge 4, Hallettsville will preside over the SPJST Royalty Competition which begins at 4 p.m.

First place winners from the seven SPJST districts across the state of Texas will compete for the title of SPJST State King and State Queen.

The 1998-99 State King and Queen will represent the SPJST Society at events across Texas, including West Fest, the Temple Christmas Parade, Texas Fraternal Congress, and the crowning of the 1999-2000 SPJST State King and Queen.

At 6 p.m., a dinner will be available.

A grand march begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by a free dance.

State Youth Achievement Day Sunday, August 2 On Sunday, August 2, the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day begins with the opening ceremonies at 11 a.m.

A lunch will also be available.

Judges Face Tough Decisions Thanks to the good folks of West, Texas for their kind reception at last Thursday's West Chamber of Commerce Banquet. Lodge 6, Cottonwood contributed the use of their facilities for the event which attracted a capacity crowd. What a wonderful way to get the local lodge involved in the affairs of the community.

Earlier in the day, I had the opportunity to serve as one of the three judges for the annual Miss West Pageant. That was tough. Even with a list of clearly defined criteria in front of us, it was a real challenge to narrow the field of entrants down to one contender. The experience certainly helps one to empathize with the judges who who will be evaluating entries and competitors in this weekend's SPJST State Royalty and State Youth Achievement Day Contests.

Activities get started on Saturday afternoon with State Royalty competition and the presentation of flags at 3:45 p.m. Opening ceremonies for Sunday's Youth Achievement Day talent competition begin at 11 a.m. Please refer to page one for additional information on both days of activity. Please make plans to attend. The young people put on a good show and appreciate your support.

Who can participate? Anyone!

Young and old, individuals and groups - anyone who can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. If you need more than one day for your project, Make a Difference Day organizers request that you still plan to do a good part of your volunteering on Make a Difference Day. For example, if you are rebuilding an area park, you may have to do some construction the week before or some painting the week after, but a significant part of the construction should take place on that Saturday.

Something we talked a little about back in March bears repeating again and that's National Make a Difference Day - October 24.

USA WEEKEND, a Sunday newsmagazine, and the Points of Light Foundation are the two driving forces behind national Make a Difference Day. Annually, in April USA WEEKEND features articles and photos on many of the volunteers and their award-winning projects. Annually, ten projects are selected nationwide to receive a $2,000 charitable donation and participate in an awards ceremony at the White House. An addi-

State FAC posts perpetual dates for state tournaments To help in planning and organizingstate tournaments, the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator has worked with the Supreme Lodge to set perpetual dates for the SPJST State Tournaments to be held annually.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge pays the chosen hosting lodge $250 for expenses, plus the lodge will receive approximately $7 per lunch plate from each player attending.

Lodge 97, Placedo hosts District Six Fa!I Meeting August 3P Dear Members of District Six, Once again, it is time for our fall meeting on Sunday, August 30. Lodge 97, Placedo will host the, day at the REA Building.

Quilt and Kolache Contest We will once again have the quilt, kolache, and needlework contests.

There will be no horseshoe contest as there is no area available.

The rules for the quilt contest are they must be pieced or appliqued and the top must be made by the individual entering it. If you won last year, you may enter this year but you cannot enter the same quilt.

The guidelines for the kolache contest are that you must be nonprofessional. The kolaches must be made from scratch, using yeast dough. Each

Lodge getters tion Lodge 6, Cottonwood enjoys successful summer picnic There was a lot of hustle and bustle at Lodge 6, Cottonwood for three days on July 17 through July 19. Starting on Friday evening with a social and meal, several were in attendance as preparations began for our 101st annual picnic coming on Sunday, July 19.

Several ladies were baking cakes and icing them for the cakewalk the youth club was to have at the picnic. Some remodeling projects were being worked on in order to have completed by picnic time. Auction items were being numbered and readied for the upcoming picnic. Lots of work to be done!

All workers were to return Saturday, July 18 at 9 a.m. to peel potatoes and all other preparations to be done throughout the day. Baking and cooking was going on. There were about 30 people working Saturday all day in preparation for our upcoming picnic the following Sunday morning.

The final day arrives, and still preparations are being handled by the necessary workers, starting at 3 a.m.

Naturally, starting so early, breakfast would be served later in the morning, which was also prepared there in the hall kitchen. It was reported that a great breakfast was served, yet all the work was accomplished and a great picnic was had at SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood Hall.

Your entry in the needlework contest must be made entirely by hand and be either knitting, crocheting, embroidery, or needlepoint. Once again, if you won last year, you may enter again but not the same item.

You may enter all three categories or only one or two, but you must be at least 18 years old and be present at the time of announcement of awards.

Registration will begin from 11 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. with judging to start at 11:45 a.m.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you in Victoria on August 30. Don't forget to bring your contest entries.

25, Ennis reports on July meeting Lodge

The monthly meeting was held July 9 at 8 p.m. with Vice President Jim Holahan presiding. The pledge of allegiance was led by Johnnie Krajca.

Get-well cards were sent to Albina Nesuda and Wilma Nesuda. Hope both are doing a lot better. A moment of silence was held for George Skrivanek, Sr. The minutes of our June meeting were read by Secretary Patricia Fowler

4/VESTN3K—Wednesday, July 29, 1998 and approved. Treasurer Cathy Krajca gave a very favorable report. Thanks, Cathy, for all the extra work you do for the lodge. Vice President Jim Holahan gave us a week-to-week report on all the rentals. He takes care of all the bookings and rentals for the lodge and is doing a great job. FAC Margaret Krajca mentioned that the incentive program was at midway and all reports were turned in to the Home Office.

There were two youth club members present at the meeting, Jerrod and Blake Ryan from Corinth, Texas. Glad to see you at the adult meeting and hope to see you at the next meeting on August 13 at 8 p.m.

Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard meets August 9 Dear Members, Soon it will be the second Sunday, the 9th of August and time, again, for the monthly meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas. It will start at the set time of 2 p.m. and will be held in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street.

The agenda will focus on the present business that needs to be handled.

A buffet luncheon with regular fare is planned for the fraternal hour.

July 12 Meeting The meeting convened with a quorum present at the starting time of 2 p.m.

Reports given were accepted without any changes.

Under old business, one motion passed in the last meeting was recalled and canceled out because it was not feasible.

New business brought several motions that were made and passed.

One of these motions was to list the lodge hall with an agent for the possibility of selling it.

Several new members were voted into the lodge. We wish to welcome them all.

The fraternal hour buffet luncheon started right after the business meeting.

Enough food was donated whereby one could have more than seconds.

For those members who wish to express their view on the motion to sell the building, be in the next meeting. A letter marked "Urgent" is being mailed to members regarding the proposed sale of the building.

Lodge 31, Yoakum planning October 18 Czech Week kick-off celebration at Werner's Dear Members and Friends, Our lodge met for its regular meeting on Wednesday, July 15, 1998 at the home of Estelle and Arno Pfuhl.

President Monta Foster presided with five members present.

After the opening ritual and routine business were completed, plans were made to observe "Czech Heritage Week" a week early with a Family Night kick-off celebration on October 18 at Werner's Restaurant in Shiner, starting at 4 p.m., The event will include the election and installation of officers.

Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. followed by speakers who will talk about the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in LaGrange.

President Foster appointed a committee whose function it will be to coordinate this celebration.

All members of Lodge 31 are urged to attend. Entire families are asked to come out as there will be activities for everyone.

More details will be announced later.

Lodge 47, Seaton member Mark Haisler graduates with honors Mark Haisler, son of Jerry and Helen Haisler, received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering with highest honors from the University of Texas in May. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He will also receive a bachelor of arts in mathematics degree with highest honors from Austin College, Sherman this summer. At AC, he was a member of Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Honor Society and Alpha Chi National Honor Society. He graduated from Temple High School in May, 1992, as salutatorian. Mark and his wife, the former Stacie Evilsizer, are living in Dallas, where he is a mechanical engineer at Lucent Technologies, Energy Solutions, in Mesquite. Mark and his parents are members of Lodge 47, Seaton, and Mark was a recipient of an SPJST scholarship when he graduated from Temple High School.

Lodge 32, Victoria reports on June social and July meeting We had our annual social meeting at DuPont Park on June 10, 1998.

President Mike Ahlstrom said grace before we all sat down and ate our good hamburgers and hot dogs which were prepared by Mike and Kathy Ahlstrom. We also enjoyed all our delicious desserts and salads that were prepared by the ladies.

Door prizes were donated by our lodge and won by Valeria Motal (dominoes), Becky Richardson (tarok cards), and Ella Arnold, Vlasta Svoboda, and Katherine Wokaty (SPJST 100th Anniversary mugs). Bryan Richardson won an SPJST cap and Suzy Wiest won a key ring which were donated by Jim Wiest.

Games of dominoes were played by several. Music on the accordion was played by Ed Malik.

We discussed donating a gift to the Czech Heritage Cultural Center in LaGrange.

Ed Malik brought newspaper articles to the meeting about his brother, Joe Malik, who passed away May 28, 1998, in Arizona. Mr. Malik helped build the UA Russian and Slavic Language Department. He was always interested in helping his students in their studies.

Sympathy cards were sent to Ed and Joan Malik and Albert and Dorothy Olsovsky. Get-well wishes were sent to Bessie Becker.

Our fall District Six meeting will be August 30 in Victoria.

After the meeting was adjourned, refreshments were served.

Dear Members and Friends, I hope that it is not too late for you to make plans to come to Lodge 92's Annual Tarok Tournament that is being held August 15. As usual, you can start to register at 8 a.m. and games start at 9 a.m.

It's always fun to play just to see if you can win. This is a game that just gets into your system. It is really fun to beat the other players. This is more fun than trying to win the lottery. Here at Lodge 92, we always enjoy having members and friends. Helen Kubala always tries to make it a day of fun and there is plenty of food and drinks.

There is a fee to play and this includes the meal. So be sure to come to Lodge 92 on August 15 for a day of fun! You can enjoy the cool air and not be in the heat that has been here for several days.

92, Fort Worth hosts August 30 Polka Mass Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, This will be a first at our Lodge 92.

Saint Paul Catholic Church will have a Polka Mass on August 30, 1998. Mass starts at 11:30 a.m. Then, after Mass, there will be' a dinner, consisting of roast beef, sausage and trimmings that go with a meal. Dinner will include a dance ticket. Both will be $10 per person. Children's plates will be $3. You can just buy a dinner ticket for $6.

Then, if you care to dance, it will only be $6. So if you want a bargain, buy the $10 ticket. Children under 12 years of age will be free. The dance will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Music will be furnished by the Henry Rezcek band from

Ennis. Then, there will be a Tejano band to play for one hour from 4 to 5 p.m. There will be a cake walk during intermission for those who would like to win a cake.

The Dallas singers will sing the Mass with some Fort Worth ladies and men.

92, Fort Worth ! rates you to Czech Heritage Day Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, I am sure many of you remember when we did not have air conditioning.

It did not seem to bother us working in the summertime in the cotton fields and with other outside chores. But now, times have changed and we just cannot get along without the cool air we have in our homes and stores and lodge halls. I guess this is what you call progress. Television keeps us home and from not attending lodge meetings and dances at SPJST lodges. Life is short so we should have more friendship and visit members and being around people.

I would like to let all of you know that soon it will be our annual Czech Heritage Day here in Fort Worth on Saturday, September 19. The committee has planned a very nice program for that day. There will be contests of different kinds, accordion music, raffle tickets for cash prizes, a fine dinner will be available, and pastries plenty.

Music will be played during the day and evening by two good bands, Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six from Pflugerville, Texas, and the popular Jodie Mikula from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Our Memory Makers will sing both Czech and English songs at 12 noon.

The parade of Czech costumes is at 6:30 p.m. Sokol group will perform at 7 p.m. The Czech dancers from West will put on a show at 7:30 p.m. Later in the day, the kitchen will be having the Hubenak hamburgers and sandwiches. The ladies of Lodge 92 will have pastries for sale all day.

Our Czech Heritage Day is for one day only but it will be a day to remember for a long time. There have been some raffle tickets sent to members that live out of the city and I am sure they will want to help our lodge with the expense that all lodges have. We also would like to pay off the loan we had to take when we built the caretaker's house. We thank you for your support and wish you could be here to enjoy the day and to see all your fellow members.

Upcoming Dances Here are dances coming up in the future: August 2 is country/western music by the Gary Lee Band. Gary Lee is a member of our lodge and he has a popular band. Sunday, August 16 is the Village Alpine band from Dallas.

This is the dance that you wear your funny hats. Bill Kucera is the band

leader and they play all types of music.

On Sunday, August 30, the St. Paul Catholic Church will have the Polka Mass. This starts at 11:30 a.m. A dinner follows the Mass. Henry Rejcek's band from Ennis will play from 3 to 7 p.m. There will be a Tejano band that will play for one hour, 4 to 5 p.m.

At the lodge meeting, the youth leader announced that Paxton Davies was elected king for District Two and James Linderman is the duke.

Be sure to mark your calendar for September 19 for the Czech Heritage Day at Lodge 92. Watch the calendar section in the Vestnik for other things that are planned at SPJST lodges.

We are sorry to hear that Dr. Marvin Janca has suffered a stroke and is in the hospital. So we send best wishes to him and his family. Marvin is the husband of Martha (Kubala) Janca.

Sister Evelyn Spacek showed the pretty blanket that was given to Rudolph and Claudia Koci for their grandbaby.

180, Burleson meets August 4 Lodge

Dear Members, We did not have a meeting in July.

The weather is just too hot to be out and especially on the road.

We are invited to a 65th wedding anniversary of my cousin, Lillian and Willie Schmidt, on Saturday, July 25 in Houston, but it is just too hot for us to be on the road. Sure hate to miss this great party. But we do wish them many more happy years together.

Our sympathy goes out to the families of Ann Ketterman of Temple. Ann passed away last week. She was the sister of Estell Hurtik. Also, sympathy is sent to the families of Margie Simmank. She passed away and was buried Monday, July 20. Margie was my sister-in-law. They will surely be missed.

Dances Every Saturday Night Remember, our country/western dances every Saturday night. Doors open at 7:45 p.m. Dancing is from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Set-ups are free. This is a nice, cool place to meet your friends or have a party.

Our next meeting will be August 4, 1998, at 6:30 p.m. Come join us for the meeting and then a lovely meal and fellowship.

Congratulations to Brother Leonard Jansa of Lodge 160, San Angelo, who celebrated his 50th birthday on July 13 at the lodge meeting.

Members sang "Happy Birthday" followed by cake, accompanied by the traditional black plates, black forks and black napkins. Brother Jansa and his family are all members of Lodge 160, San Angelo.

Lodge 183, Arlington reports on lodge and member activities Dear Members and Friends, It has been some time since my last letter was published. It seems that I have been out of town more than at home. I have been in Anguilla in the Caribbean, Los Angeles several times, Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, etc. I am neither bragging or complaining, but maybe you will understand why this letter is so long in being written.

A good many things have taken place at Lodge 183, Arlington MidCities this summer. The family nights continue to be enjoyable although they have been lightly attended possibly due to families being on vacation or it could be the incessant heat plaguing the North Texas area.

I failed to mention that at one of our previous family nights, Johnny Adamek and his wife, Dorothy, prepared, breaded and fried fish for the family night meal. They prepared enough fish and french fries for a large crowd of hungry Czechs. Also, these two single-handedly prepared the food for the charity dinner held at our lodge at the end of May. Over 100 guests attended the affair. Our president cleaned the deep fryers afterwards.

Let's give these members a great big hand! At our last family night held in June, the lodge provided fried chicken and that was topped off with ice cream sundaes. These family night gettogethers are still held the last Friday of each month.

Monthly Lodge Meetings Our monthly lodge meetings remain productive. Officers and members voted to install new smoke eliminators and they have certainly improved the atmosphere on our game nights. A decision was made as to who will

The trustees have audited the financial books for our business year 1997 and issued a positive report. Several of our student members graduated from high school and received congratulations and a $50 award from Lodge 183.

The lodge is continuing to make investments recommended by our Treasurer Leon Stiborek and approved by those attending the lodge meetings.

Hall rentals have remained steady.

The day-to-day operation of the lodge is still running smoothly under the direction of President Kenneth Cepak and his cast of supporting officers and members.

Our latest monthly lodge meeting was held Monday, July 13. Most all lodge officers were present and several members attended. Trustees Cecil Phillips and Rudy Rejcek audited the books and gave their report at this meeting. All the officers gave their respective reports. Several items of business were discussed. One main point was to consider placing air conditioning units on the roof and to phase out our large ground units as they are becoming mechanically obsolete. It was decided to let the trustees check into the cost and labor required to perform this change over. Another investment was recommended by our treasurer. Janie Rejcek won the door prize after the meeting adjourned.

Delinda Bearden is one of our young members who graduated from high school this past spring.

On May 23, Delinda graduated from Arlington High. Delinda and her family have been Delinda Bearden members of Lodge 183 for six years. Our lodge is always proud of the accomplishments of our young members and is happy to send Delinda a graduation gift.

Cecil and Martha Phillips are members of Lodge 183 and have supported the efforts to make our lodge one of the best. Cecil has been a trustee of the lodge for the past several years and he and Martha always attend the meetings and family nights. Cecil is constantly passing on his ideas how to improve operations at the lodge and to enhance our finances and save money. Cecil is a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoys social gatherings. He was Grand Knight of his chapter at one time and also belongs to the Elks and Moose lodges. Cecil and Martha have three children, a boy and twin daughters, 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Cecil worked in the insurance business for many years and owned his own agency. Martha likes to visit with the grandchildren and watch Texas Rangers baseball on television. Cecil loves to go to Las Vegas. He has participated in several poker tournaments on some of his visits. The last poker tournament that Cecil participated in was in April at the Binyon's Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas. Did you clean 'ern out, Cecil? This vibrant couple will be married 50 years this August.

Speaking of wedding anniversaries, ol' Robert and I were married 30 years on July 12. Our daughters, Kelly Ratcliffe and her husband Terry and Shelby Sill, gave us a wonderful anniversary party. We had champagne brunch at one of the finest Dallas hotels and about 50 of our relatives and friends attended. It was wonderful to visit with such warm and generous people. We both had a great time and received many beautiful presents.

Thank you to our daughters for giving us such a sweet surprise and thank you to everyone that spent part of their Sunday with us.

Anguilla is a small island in the Caribbean once a part of the British Empire. I spent several days there not long ago. In order to get to Anguilla, my friend Christa and I had to fly from D/FW to Miami International Airport.

From there, we flew to Saint Maarten.

From Saint Maarten, we took a water taxi to Anguilla. It is the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. Anguilla, known as "Eel Island" because of its shape, is only 16 miles long and a maximum of three miles wide. Flat as a pancake, long and slender, Anguilla has very little rainfall. Although vegetation may be sparse, the beaches of white coral sand around Anguilla are outstanding! It is a quiet island with no hustle and bustle and crime is almost non-existent. The natives are friendly but the food somewhat expensive as everything has to be shipped to the island. On . the return trip, we had to do the opposite of all we did to get there.

Jerry Mikus, a member of Lodge 183, is hearing impaired. The lodge sponsors Jerry each year as he participates in a national bass fishing tournament for the deaf. Jerry went to Tennessee to compete this summer.

Jerry has done this for 24 straight years. There were 107 boats and 234 fishermen in the tournament. The winning team was from Indiana. The members voted to go to Arkansas next year. Shortly after the fishing tournament, Jerry attended the 36th annual Mikus family reunion in Hallettsville, Texas. Jerry has attended all 36.

Some family members come from as far away as Australia. From there, Jerry drove to San Antonio to attend the National Association for the Deaf convention. He stayed there for a week. About 2,000 attendees were at the convention from several different states. After the convention, Jerry drove to Temple, Texas, and visited the SPJST Home Office. He obtained some literature and from there, he drove home. As you can tell, Jerry does not let his impairment stand in his way.

Doggone

There was an old Czech farmer who lived alone in the countryside with a dog that the farmer thought was the best dog that had ever been on the face of the earth. When the dog was younger, he had herded the small group of sheep that the farmer owned and had obeyed every command that the farmer had given. There was nothing the dog wouldn't do for the man. As they both got old, they enjoyed each other's company and ambled around the farm together. One day, the farmer awoke and found that his long and faithful companion had

passed away. The farmer was heart broken but decided to do something nice for his departed friend. He built a small coffin and placed the dog inside.

He took the dog down into the small Czech village and into the church. He explained to the preacher about the dog and asked him if he would say a prayer for the poor departed creature.

The preacher said that they could not have animals in the church and he would not say a prayer for the dog.

He told the farmer that there was a new denomination down the road and that they would possibly do a service for him. As the old farmer gathered up the coffin and started out the door, he asked the priest if he thought five thousand tollars was enough to donate to the new church for doing the service. Hearing this, the preacher called out, "Wait! Hold on there. I didn't know that your dog was a member!"

The regular meeting of SPJST Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville was held Sunday, July 12, 1998.

President Mrs. Elaine Duron called the meeting to order at 3 p.m. A silent moment of prayer was held in memory of Mr. Dennis Chernosky and Herbert Schramm.

Fifteen members were in attendance. Officers in attendance included the president, secretary, and treasurers of the lodge and hall.

Secretary Mrs. Lillie Mae Shupak read the minutes and they were approved. Books were checked. They were in order. The treasurers gave their reports.

The minutes of the June meeting and the treasurer's report were read and approved.

Anna Marie Moss reported on several of our sick members: Anita Regmund had experienced a seizure recently but was getting better.

Pauline Novosad had an episode of dehydration and was hospitalized briefly.

Lottie Ramey of Colorado was also dehydrated but after treatment was doing better.

Velma Malchar is still not feeling strong enough to come to our meetings.

We really miss you all and hope to see all of you back at our meetings very soon.

Get-well cards signed by members were sent to those members.

Betty Jurica read the names of the July birthday members: Rose Huff, Mattie Netek, Helen Sacky, Agnes Burge and twin brother, Jerry Elzner (honorary member). We recognized them by singing the "Happy Birthday" song.

Anna Marie Moss noted that the Dallas Circle has a quotation which she thinks would be worthy for us to adopt likewise: Mej to se vzdycky radi.

Members agreed and voted "aye" to the suggestion.

Little Jerry Elzner is a frequent guest at our meetings and was finally cajoled into singing for us. He sang "A Ja Jsem," "The Marine Song," and a short Polish ditty. For a six-year-old, he does an outstanding job.

Grandparents Jerry and Millie Elzner have been singing to him and teaching him songs since he was two years old.

A very delicious meal was served.

Bingo followed by those who wanted to play.

We are happy to report that Rhonda White had a baby boy last night (July 1, 1998). Mother and son are doing fine.

The Friendship Club met at Ryan's Steak House on Wednesday, July 1, 1998, for their annual luncheon outing.

I was not able to attend, but I can imagine what went on. They visited, they ate, they visited more, ate some more, followed by more visiting, and then followed by dessert. I was there last year, so I know exactly what went on. Hope all of you had fun. I missed being with you, and knowing the food is always good, am sure no one went away hungry.

News of Members Ima Lou LaPlant had surgery recently and hear that she is doing great. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and hope to see you at the next meeting.

Lydia Alholm had cataract surgery and reports how well she can see now, so Roy plans to have the same. Good luck, Roy. Hope yours is as successful as Lydia's.

Mary Pavey returned to Alabama on June 24 after four weeks of visiting and having fun with family and friends.

She stayed with Katherine Garrison and reports that she was waited on royally. She especially enjoyed seeing everyone at Friendship Club, visited with friends at Lodge 92 Ladies Circle, enjoyed a visit with former neighbors, and especially enjoyed the visits in the homes of Lillie McMillen, Mrs. Prill and Jerry Koubek in Ennis. Also, she enjoyed the Lodge 154 meeting and gathering at Patti Gage's lake home in Decatur which was on Father's Day. Our best wishes go out to you and we are already looking forward to your next visit to Texas.

Jeanie Mason's grandson, Brandon Mason, will be appearing in the musical "Pepito's Story" on August 27 to 31 which will be held at the new Bass Hall. There is a good possibility that he will have the lead, so watch the Star Telegram for any news articles.

Rosie Steinman and Jeanie Mason enjoyed the visit with their sister, Frances Mamula, who was here from South Bend, Indiana. Hear they had lots of family get-togethers and also visited in Donna Rose's condo at the race track.

Congratulations go out to Elsie Anders. Her picture made the Sokol Slet Program Book. Of course, back then she was known as Elsie Pekar of Ennis.

August hostesses will be Elsie Anders, Natalie Maly, and Rose Nieswiadomy and meeting will be Wednesday, August 5. Also, do not forget a couple cans for St. Thomas Food Bank.

Looking forward to seeing all of you following my return from the Czech Republic. I had a wonderful time and I will be anxious to catch up on all your news.

Christian Sisters plan August 8 quilt show Ocker

The Christian Sisters of Ocker Brethren Church in Zabcikville will sponsor a country quilt show and bazaar on Saturday, August 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be in the Church Fellowship Building. The church is located on Highway 53, about 11 miles east of Temple.

An admission fee of $2 will be charged. Children under 12 will be admitted free. In addition to viewing the quilts, refreshments will be served and quilt booklets will be furnished to identify the various quilts Quilt patterns will be available for a minimal charge.

The following classification will be shown: antique-historical (before 1933); patchwork; antique; friendship; embroidery; tie tac; machine-made; crib; children's; and others.

Love offerings are being accepted for a queen-sized quilt. It is a beautiful quilt, make and hand-quilted, by Mrs. Doris Svoboda. Any member of the Christian Sisters will accept offerings.

A name for the quilt will be drawn at the end of the show. You do .not have to be present to be eligible for the drawing.

Handmade items and baked goods will be for sale in the country bazaar.

Proceeds from the event will be used for projects and functions of the Christian Sisters.

Kolache Festival in Caldwell set for September 12 Annual

Early in the state's history, a hearty band of Czechoslovakian immigrants arrived in Central Texas to colonize what was to become Burleson County, bringing their own order and traditions to the area. A powerful sense of culture continues and for the last 15 years has drawn to a focus at the annual Kolache Festival in Caldwell.

The Kolache Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 12. The oneday event begins at 9 a.m. and ends as dark falls across the little Central Texas town of Caldwell, county seat of Burleson. The festival covers the Courthouse Square Downtown and spills over into the adjoining streets and businesses for 16 square blocks; every building and business participates in the activities.

By statewide demand, the bake show was opened to three categories--a County Champion, a State Champion, and a Professional Champion! The Kolache Bake-Off competition features celebrity judges from far and wide casting their votes for the absolutely best kolache. In addition, a Kolache Eating Contest commands equal competition for statewide championship.

The day-long Kolache Festival will feature continuous entertainment, hundreds of Czech dancers, musicians and singers, museums, quilt show, antique automobile show with a vast display of classic Model-T motorcars, a fine arts exhibition and sale featuring Dalhart Winberg, the famous Texas Artist.

Demonstrations of canning, weaving, wine making, lace tatting, and other lost arts continue during the day. Threehundred plus juried arts and crafts vendors will be scattered throughout the festival. Antique Row, a section of antique vendors, will dot the lawns of Caidwell's historical homes offering

great finds for the collector.

Part of the European heritage the Czechs brought and maintained in the new world was fine craftsmanship in furniture making and home arts. The Annual Kolache Festival offers fine examples of this remarkable type of work. Food, music and customs reign during the Festival and give the visitor a chance to enjoy one of the state's more cohesive ethnic traditions. The 71st legislature of the State of Texas proclaimed Caldwell the "Kolache Capital of Texas" and commended its citizens on their significant accomplishments in promoting the heritage of their Czech ancestors.

Caldwell is located in Central Texas, 22 miles southwest of Bryan-College Station, 100 miles northwest of Houston, 75 miles northeast of Austin, and 175 miles south of Dallas-Fort Worth at the intersection of State Highways 21 and 36. Caldwell is within 200 miles of 85 percent of the total population of the state.

Annual Westfest Taroky Tournament September 5 Tenth

The Directors of Westfest will again host a Taroky Tournament in conjunction with the Westfest celebration. The tournament will be held at West Community Center in West, Texas, on Saturday, September 5, 1998. The tournament is open to all interested taroky players, ladies and gentlemen, 18 years of age or older.

Entry fee will be $17.50 per person with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and play starting at 9 a.m. Play should conclude about 5:30 p.m. Kolaches and coffee will be served during registration. Lunch is included in the registration fee. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top four players.

Play will continue for all players throughout the tournament. The top four players after six rounds will be awarded first, second, third and fourth place honors.

Dear District Two Members, Fiesta Texas in San Antonio will be the destination of this year's district trip. This event which is open to all District Two members will be held Saturday, August 22. Three buses have been reserved for this day. The bus ride will be $10 per person.

For those in the Temple area, buses will leave the SPJST Home Office at 7 a.m. We will travel by way of Taylor.

Buses will stop in Taylor for pick-up around 7:45 a.m. You may be picked up at either location, whichever is most convenient for you.

Tickets for Fiesta Texas, which include the water rides, can be purchased in advance for $18. Tickets and bus fare must be paid before August 15. Please contact your local youth leader or myself.

Buses will depart Fiesta Texas at 10:30 p.m. This will enable us to see the fireworks which are at 9:30 p.m. I understand they are fabulous.

Due to bus regulations, no buses will stay on the premises during the day.

Hope you make plans to enjoy the day at Fiesta Texas with SPJST. Please call early and reserve your bus seat and get your tickets at a discount rate.

people, adults enjoy lakeside social District Two camp leaders-in-training and chaperones met recently to discuss and plan summer camp. The outing at BLORA (Belton Lake Outdoor Recreational Area) on Lake Belton was also enjoyed by many youth members and guests.

Everyone enjoyed swimming, the paddleboats, and time to relax. Hot dogs cooked by Gary Skrabanek and David Koslovsky were enjoyed and then came that delicious cool watermelon.

Youth Achievement Day results Sunday, June 28 turned out to be a great day for family and friends and most especially, youth members of District Two. Lodge 29, Taylor was a great host to the District Two Youth Achievement Day. Thank you, Taylor, for your most gracious hospitality. A very special thank you to Youth Leader Carol Tallas for all the hard work she put into YAD. Carol helped make all prior arrangements and did so much to make this day run so smoothly. To all parents and youth members who helped, thank you!

Youth members, once again, you were all fantastic. The crafts were great. There were so many unique crafts. I always look so forward to the talent. What talent you guys have!

The royalty competition—what can I say except—WOW! Seven queens and two kinds. The speeches were excellent. We are all so very proud of each youth who participated.

Remember, you are all winners.

Thank you for such an enjoyable day.

The youth did very well at District YAD. All of the youth were winners.

Christi Sparkman won third place in hobby kits, honorable mention in pictorial arts, second place in constructed items, second place in sewing, honorable mention in individual talent, first in group talent and first runner-up as duchess.

Whitney Dobecka won honorable mention in handicraft and foods, second place in science and needlecraft, honorable mention in individual talent and first place in group talent.

Celia Dobecka won first place in sewing and constructed items, honorable mention in science/education and handicraft.

Brittany Angelo won second place in foods, third place in needlecraft and honorable mention in pictorial arts, handicraft and individual talent.

By the time this letter is printed, the annual picnic will have come and gone. The youth sponsored the games at the picnic. We want to thank everyone who donated cakes and bingo items and for those who worked in our booths. Everyone's help makes the youth club a great success.

District camp will be July 24 thru 27 at Camp Val Verde. All the youth are looking forward to camp in spite of the heat. See you all there.

State YAD is Sunday, August 21n Temple. Everyone who won first place will need to bring their entries with them.

The group talent will be practicing their dance to ensure they know it well.

Independence Day QUEEN'S NOTEBOOK

Being Part of Royalty Court a Memorable Experience Dear Readers, I am sad to announce that this year was my last year to attend District Six camp as a youth member. I had a great time attending in the past and can say that I will truly miss it. Bryan, John and I attended as LITs this year. However, I will not forget anyone because I had them sign my camp tee-shirt.

On July 4 in Shiner, the SPJST State Royalty had its last official state appearance. The float that J.J. and I were riding on received second place in the miscellaneous category. Afterwards, we went towards Hallettsville and ate hot dogs and had a skating party. It was fun watching some people fall and not me. Not saying that I am a great skater but I'm a careful one.

Youth Club member anticipates State YAD Dear Vestnik Readers, District One had their YAD on Sunday, July 19 in Dime Box. Lodge 9 had senior and junior group talents.

I entered in several craft categories and placed first in three categories. I ran for king but did not win. I had a good time trying, though.

Lodge 9 also won first place on our scrapbook.

I hope to see everyone at State YAD on August 2.

After our speaker, we discussed going to Schlitterbahn the next day and then we got organized for YAD. It's going to be exciting.

30, Taiton Youth Club reports on June meeting Lodge

SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club met on Sunday, June 7, 1998, at the Taiton Community Center. The meeting was called to order by President Rachael Dluhos. Trey Staff lead the members in the motto and pledge. The roll call and minutes were read by Assistant Secretary Curtis Dorotik. We welcomed a visitor. She was Alissa Krpec. We also welcomed a new member. He is Gerard Marcaurele.

We are very pleased to have him as an official member.

The officers were installed. Monica Staff, president of the adult lodge, performed the installation. We wish them all a great year and look forward to a successful one.

Old Business The Fourth of July Parade in Shiner was set for Saturday, July 4, 1998.

Members were asked to ride on the float with the State King and Queen.

District camp was set for June 19 to 21 at Camp Lone Star in LaGrange. We were meeting in the parking lot of the Taiton Community Center at 1:45 p.m. and leaving at 2 p.m. Read your Vestnik for more information as to what to bring and etc. The district tour was set for July 25, 1998, to Corpus Christi.

YAD cards were due by June 9, 1998.

New Business Members and parents were asked to sign a list that they understand the SPJST Rules of Conduct. Point sheets were handed out. If there are any questions, please let me know by June 9, 1998. Members were asked to work the Monsanta Day of Tour again this year. It was set for June 23, 1998, at the Cresent Fair Grounds The youth club members made Father's Day cards for the craft contest and several of them read their cards to the club. They also collected items for the nursing home to use as bingo prizes. We planned to take them to the Garden Villa Nursing Home in El Campo on June 17, 1998, at 10 a.m.

Our next meeting was set for July 5, 1998, at the Taiton Community Center at 1:30 p.m. for the adult meeting and 2 p.m. for the youth meeting. Contest and charity was decorating the plastic can that was given to you for the Fourth of July and we will be giving them to the American Legion for their Veterans Day Celebration in November.

The meeting was adjourned and cool refreshments of snow cones were served by Brandon, Steven and T.J. Drapela. Hope you all had a wonderful Happy Fourth of July.

30, Taiton Youth Club reports on July meeting Lodge

SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club celebrated July 4 at their youth club meeting on Sunday. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Jason Kaspar. Shara Dluhos read a poem "Our Flag" and background music was "God Bless America." As she read the poem, Chet and Jarret Dluhos brought the American flags up and put them in their stands on the table. The members recited the pledge and then sang "God Bless America."

The officers' table was decorated with a red and white cloth and had a star garland in front and had an arrangement of red, white and blue flowers in a basket.

We welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Krpec, one of our past youth club members, and family, Jaca and Donavon.

Curtis Dorotik called the roll and read the secretary's report.

Under old business, members reported on the community service project of Monsanta Field Day at Cresent.

Plans for the district tour were given out by Assistant DYC Karen Kaspar.

We will be going to Corpus Christi the weekend of July 25 to 26. Marcy has a lot of fun things planned for us to see and do. YAD will be held July 19, 1998. Hillje-El Campo is hosting.

Under new business, State YAD is August 1 and 2, 1998, in Temple.

Plans were made for our fund raiser.

We will be having a food booth at the Bobby Jones and Prowlers battle dance on August 16, 1998, at Taiton Hall.

We will be serving homemade chicken noodle soup, hamburgers, chips, tea, coffee and kolaches and rolls of assorted flavors. Everyone is welcome to come and have a great day and enjoy the good food.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Paul Schoelman and Gerard Marcaurele.

For our craft contest, the members were given plastic containers to decorate with a theme. They all did a very good job and we will be filling them with candy or etc. and will give them to the American Legion for door prizes and decoration at the Veterans Day program for our charity project.

Next Meeting August 16 Our next meeting will be August 16, 1998, at 10 a.m. before we serve our meal at the Taiton Community Center.

The contest is to make a sign or poster for the dinner menu. The meeting was

adjourned and the members sang the "Star-Spangled Banner."

Our refreshments were served by Shara, Chet and Jarret Dluhos. We had those super Taiton Schoelman watermelons. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon visiting and eating watermelon.

Muzikantska tradice rodu Vejvoda ze Zbraslavi saha daleko do minulosti.

Zakladatelem muzikantske tradice i kapely byl ded Jaromira Vejvody, narozeny v roce 1834 a mel pet sync: Vaclava, Antonina, Josefa, Karla a Bohumila.

Vg ichni byli muzikanti, Josef a Bohumil se stali i kapelniky dechovyvh hudeb.

Josef Vejvoda byl pokraeovatelem muzikantske a kapelnicke tradice ale jinak byl mistr zednicky ve Zbraslavi.

Narodil se v roce 1871 a mel 'gest deti: dva syny – Vaclava a Jaromira a etyti dcery Emilku, Amalku, Jarmilku a Anieku. Synove Vaclav a Jaromir se opet stali muzikanty, Jaromir potom i kapelnikem a hudebnim skladatelem.

Jaromir Vejvoda se narodil 28. bfezna 1902 ye Zbraslavi. V atlem mladi, jig jako gestilety se ucil hrat na housle, ye etrnacti letech se zaeal u sveho stryce Bohumila na kfidlovku.

Od patnacti let se stal elenem otcovy kapely.

CZECH HERITAGE AND CULTURE

Texas District - NACC meets August 16 in LaGrange The annual meeting of the Texas District - National Alliance of Czech Catholics will meet Sunday, August 16 at 2 p.m. at KJT Home Office in LaGrange.

The agenda includes the 1997 National Convention, 1998 at Washington, D.C., the Nepomucenum Seminary in Rome, and the Vlk Evangelization Program for Czech Republic. Also discussion will be the state projects for Texas, the Wayside Shrines and the book program.

Resources accepting applications for folk arts apprenticeships Texas Folklife Resources (TFR) is now accepting applications for its Apprenticeships in the Folk Arts program. TFR will make a limited number of monetary awards for qualified apprentices to study intensively with Texas master folk artists. Each award will range approximately from $1,000 to $2,000.

The Apprenticeships in the Folk Arts program has granted over 50 awards since its inception in 1987.

Apprentices must already have some skill in the folk art form presented to study. Apprentices must also already know the master artist with whom they desire to study. Together, apprentice and master artist should present a plan for a six-to-nine-month intensive period of study. Preference is given to projects dedicated to the passing on of a folk art rooted in the artists' communities. Preference is also given to projects perpetuating folk arts whose existence is especially endangered.

The apprenticeship program supports all genres of the folk arts, including crafts, oral traditions, dance and music. Most awards are made to individual masters and apprentices, but group apprenticeships are encouraged where appropriate. All participants must be residents of Texas. The application deadline is September 1, 1998.
