Fun, Friendship Await Travelers On the Road Again Independence Day travelers, take a note: If you're planning to be out on the road, and will be in the vicinity of Snook or Rowena, plan on staying a while as both Lodge 9, Snook and Lodge 49, Rowena are planning big events for July 4 . . .

As for Lodge 9, located in the Brazos Valley, they're planning a picnic and barbecue dinner. The lodge is working to raise money to renovate and upgrade their lodge hall. "Years ago, I remember enjoying our big annual lodge picnic," reminisces Lodge 9 Secretary Carlson Jakubik.

"We're starting out on a smaller scale with this one," he states. "We want to see it grow." To get to Lodge 9 from Snook, turn on FM 2155 to downtown.

At Snook School, stay right on Spur 2155. At the "T, " turn right on CR 269. Go a quarter mile •and the lodge hall is on the left.

Lodge 49, Rowena, in West Texas, is joining in their community's 100th anniversary with a grand celebration at their lodge hall. The day-long event will include arts and craft booths, food and lots of music.

"This is a community-wide event," explains Lodge 49 President Elizabeth Walther. "Rowena is observing its 100th anniversary and we're a part of it." Local lodge activities include such varied events as judging for both the Beard Growing Contest and Bonnie and Clyde Look-Alike Contest to an evening polka dance and Sunday morning breakfast. Lodge 49 is located on the southeast side of town.

You'll recall that we showcased our SPJST Spring Graduates in the May 20 issue of the Vestnik. Since those 48 graduates appeared, we have received information on several other spring graduates. KELLY VAN ANGELL Kelly is a member of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje and a graduate of Yoe High School in Cameron. He is the son of David and Beverly Angell and the grandson of Victor and Helen Kalmus, the late Robert Zarosky, and Irene and the late Charlie F. Angell. He is the great-nephew of Matt and Henrietta Vanek and Frank and Rita Vanek.

Kelly plans to attend Texas A&M University.

Julie will attend Tarrent County Junior College in Fort Worth and then Texas A&M University.

NICHOLAS ALDEN MORRISEY Nicholas is a member of Lodge 107, Floresville and a graduate of East Central High School in San Antonio. He is the son of Robert and Cheryl Morrisey and the grandson of B.J. and Frankie Campbell and the great-grandson of Besie R. Smith.

Nicholas is employed as a lifeguard this summer. He will then join the Coast Guard.

AMBER ONDRUSEK Amber is a member of Lodge 84, Dallas and a graduate of Southwest Texas State University with a bachelor of business administration degree. She is the daughter of Joe and Timpy Ondrusek and the granddaughter of Carlyn Ondrusek.

Amber won the regional title in a sales scholarship competition sponsored by Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. She placed in the top six teams nationally with competition ranging from Cornell to Baylor University.

JAMES CHRISTOPHER PEATON Chris is a member of Lodge 154, Fort Worth and a graduate of Boswell High School in Fort Worth. He is the son of James and Susan Steinman Peaton and the grandson of Rose Steinman.

A firefighter for the past three years and an Emergency Medical Technical since November, Chris will attend Texas Tech University where he will pursue a degree in medicine.

Lodge 9, Snook invites one and all to Fourth of July Picnic Dear Members, The officers of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook request your input as to what you would like to do with your lodge building. The building was first constructed in 1935 and very little has been done to bring it up to today's standards. Approximately 20 years ago, a bar and kitchen were added to the north end of the hall and also, at that time, six window air conditioners were installed. These air conditioners were used at the time and now are not sufficient enough to cool the hall when a large crowd is present.

Fourth of July Picnic The officers have decided to host a Fourth of July picnic, which would consist of a barbecue dinner with all the trimmings for $5 a plate for adults, and $3 for children under 12. Serving will start at 11 a.m. followed by a cake walk. There will also be a silent auction. A country and western dance has been scheduled from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

We hope that this can be an annual event in the years to come.

Lodge 17, New Tabor sets Ninth Annual Tarok Tournament July 11 Everyone is welcome to participate in the Ninth Annual Tarok Tournament at SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor onSaturday, July 11, 1998.

Registration is at 8 a.m. and play begins at 9 a.m. The tournament consists of four and one-half hour rounds of play. Table high rounds will receive $5.

Entry fee is $20 per person and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes. Late entries will be accepted if play slots are available. Ages 18 and over only. Please pre-register to help us estimate our food supply.

47, Seaton honors sales representatives Lodge

President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

Dawn Capps and Rachel Baca brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Visitors were Keith Gatewood and Freddie Schroeder. Visitors are always welcome. On the sick list were Bennie Orsag and Bob and Mary Haisler. We

wish all of these a speedy recovery.

New members accepted were Charles P. Gilbert and Emily Mikeska Stuteville. Correspondence consisted of a thank-you from the Jerry Bartek family; a letter and $50 donation from Lanelle (Mikulas) Quinn; a letter from Kathy Fritz about the concert (Fraternal Fest) on June 14 at the CAC in Temple; a letter from President Howard Leshikar thanking Lodge 47 and FAC Dorothy Pechal for hosting the 42 domino tournament; and a letter from Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin informing us about a possible audit of fraternals. Also, congratulations are in order to SPJST scholarship winners: Jason Haisler (freshman) and Wallace Reese, Gary Skrabanek, and Kelli Stracener (undergraduates).

The roll call of officers and board members showed Board Member Henry Janacek absent. All sales representatives were present.

Board minutes were read by Edwin Vasicek.

President Pechal asked all fathers to stand, and they were applauded. He also thanked everyone for a successful work day. He stated the Scott and White emergency helicopter was coming for display at our June 7 picnic.

If anyone is interested in judging barbecue on July 18, please call Edwin Vasicek.

Keith Gatewood was on hand to help honor our sales representatives.

Lodge 25, Ennis member Frank Kubena wins Best Writer and Arranger of the Year Award B.F. and Louise Kubena of Ganado introduced Czech music to their son, Frank, at an early age.

Throughout his youth he encountered polkas, waltzes, and Czech music on the radio. His high school band director, Jerry Bryan, got him involved in musical instruments.

While in high school he played with the Lee Roy Matocha Band. He holds a degree in music from Southwest Texas State University and plays more than seven instruments.

Frank's love of Czech music recently won him the Best Writer and Arranger of the Year Award at the Eighth Annual Texas Polka Music Awards held in El Campo. The nominations were based on recommendations of nearly 200 electors representing band leaders, radio DJs and dancers from across the state. The polka music industry in Texas honored those musicians and entertainers who are responsible for making polka music a vital part of life in Texas.

Czech music is hard to obtain so

Kubena listens to old records and writes out and arranges music for bands. In addition to writing and arranging the music, he does vocals in English, Czech, German, and Spanish. Kubena has made a total of six tapes with some of the leading bands. He has played at the Lawrence Welk Polka Festival in Branson, Missouri, and Laughlin, Nevada, and at the Monte Carlo Polka Party in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Kubena is employed at the U.S. Post Office in Ennis where he resides with his wife, Cindy. They have two sons, Jonathan and Michael. Kubena is currently concentrating his musical energies toward writing polka music MIDIs. Gaiduseks enjoy Memorial Day visit to Alabama and Georgia Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie J. Gaidusek, Sr. spent Memorial Day weekend in Enterprise, Alabama, visiting their oldest daughter and son-in-law, retired LTC Everett and Mrs. Beverly Urech, and three grandchildren, Tracy, Tony and Joseph Urech. Everett Urech is a lawyer and has a law practice in Fort Rucker, Alabama. Their oldest granddaughter is a junior in college in Montgomery, Alabama, at Huntington College. While in Alabama, they celebrated Tracy's 21st birthday. Also, Tony Urech graduated from Enterprise High School. He graduated 20th out of a class of 400.

After the graduation, they visited their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. David Whiteside, and two grandsons, Tyler and Christopher, in Albany, Georgia. David Whiteside is employed by M&M Mars in Albany, Georgia. While in Albany, they watched their grandson race his junior dragster. In the final round, nine-year-old Tyler had to race against a 15-year-old and he won the race.

80, Holland reports on June meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, President Harold Rohde called the June meeting to order at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 1998. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silence for departed members.

Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham reported all officer• present and read the minutes of the previous meeting.

They were approved as read. The committee reports showed all are doing fine.

Brother Latham read a letter from District Two President Kathy Fritz about the June Fest scheduled for June 14 at the Cultural Activities Center.

President Rohde thanked everyone who worked the fund raiser in May. That is what made it a success.

Bar Chairman Elwood Bell is in the hospital at this time and we all wish him well. The "pull-tab king," Joe Sumbera, has been ill also. We sure have missed them both! Hope you guys are feeling better now!

Coleman Benner moved for adjournment and the motion was seconded by Calvin Eckermann. The meeting was followed by a one-hour social.

Lucas will represent Spring High School at the National Forensic League competition in St. Louis, Missouri, in Student Congress, Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking, and Cross-Examination Debate. He plans to attend the University of Texas. He is the son of Barbara and David Mikeska and the grandson of Rose and Victor Mikeska and Maurice Young of Bryan, all members of SPJST. Speaking about the graduates, I want to mention that on May 29, I attended the graduation of my grandson, Brooks Krejci Eubank, son of Jeannette Eubank and Robert Eubank, at the John Cooper School in The Woodlands, Texas. Brooks was an "A" Lodge 54, West's 50-year members were honored May 24, 1998, at student, making the high honor roll Lone Star Hall in West with a delicious home-cooked dinner with all the through the years, member of the trimmings. Under old business, the student scholarship recipient and the maintenance of the grounds at the, SPJST Hall on Bohemian Hall Road were discussed.

Under new business, a discussion was held regarding the annual Christmas party and possible ways in which the lodge could recognize and honor long-time members. Marie Stasney, FAC, read a letter from the Home Office regarding a Flag Day essay contest.

92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle to tour Bass Performance Hall Lodge

On Wednesday, June 24, the Ladies Circle of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth will go on a guided tour of the Bass Performance Hall in downtown Fort Worth. We will meet at the lodge hall at 3316 Roberts Cut-Off Road at 8:15 a.m. that morning and carpool to downtown, arriving at the Performance Hall at 9:15 a.m. for instructions before the tour starting at 9:30 a.m. The tour will be approximately one hour and 15 minutes long. There is no charge for the tour; however, the Ladies Circle

will accept your $1 or more donation to be presented to the Bass Performance Hall School Children's Outreach Program Fund.

Lodge 155, Austin plans June 20 meeting and annual picnic It's fun time again for our Lodge 155 annual picnic at Deer Creek Ranch on June 20 at 3 p.m. in the scenic hill country near Dripping Springs, Texas!

The site is on the shore of a small, clear lake which creates a constant cool breeze so there are no mosquitoes. This is a safe, restricted swimming and sandy beach area for children (no sharks; only ducks and fish) with playground equipment. Added to the above, tables laden with delicious food all entice members and guests to return each year for this happy event.

Members are reminded to bring salads and/or desserts and lawn chairs. We will be privileged this time to have our SPJST state president Howard Leshikar and District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky as our special guests.

Our lodge secretary Ginny Prasatik, and her mother, Alice Prasatik, regretfully will be unable to attend this meeting and annual picnic as they will be in the Czech Republic with a tour group. In anticipation of her first trip outside of the continental U.S., Ginny is quite excited to finally visit the land of her grandmother's birth (Frenstat, C.R.) frequently referred by Annie as "The Old Country." Alice has made two previous trips to the Czech Republic in the 70s during Communist rule, so she is anxious to see what changes have developed since her last visit there.

Again, we thank Clarence and Doris Boriski for making the necessary arrangements for hosting this annual picnic near their home.

The second quarterly meeting was held Sunday, May 31, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the home of Chester and Marie Stasney. All officers and several members were present.

The meeting was called to order by President Stasney and the pledge to the flag was said. Secretary Malba Smesny read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved as read.

The financial report was given by Treasurer Evelyn Wotipka. It was approved as given.

Lodge 177, Academy to award scholarship Lodge 177, Academy will award a $500 scholarship to its eligible members. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior or a currently enrolled college student.

The applicant must also have an active SPJST insurance certificate at Lodge 177, Academy in force for at least one year at the time of application.

If you are eligible and interested in applying for the scholarship, applications and a full list of requirements may be picked up at the SPJSST Home Office from Lodge 177 Secretary Kathy Fritz.

Mr. Wayne Jacobs, FFS, cooked barbecue chicken on the barbecue grill. The residents enjoyed watching him flip the chickens. The menu consisted of barbecue chicken, cabbage, baked pork and beans, and dessert was a choice of individual tart pies—lemon, cherry, peach, and apple—with whipped cream.

Residents enjoyed watching Wayne Jacobs cook barbecued chicken at the annual picnic on May 13. The tasty menu included barbecue chicken, cabbage, baked pork, beans and an assortment of desserts.

Patak Family Reunion The family of John and Anna Patak, whose descendents include John, Frank, Rudolph, Lucy Honza, and Annie Laza and all their descendents will meet for a reunion on June 27, 1998, at the KJT Hall in Ennis,Texas. Hoelscher- Buxkemper Family Reunion The Hoelscher-Buxkemper family will hold its 23rd Bienniel Reunion on July 11 and 12, 1998, at the Ben Hur Shrine Hall in Austin, Texas.

The 1996 reunion was held in Corpus Christi with 966 family members in attendance. Invitations have been sent out to over 3900 families in the USA and 24 more in foreign countries.

This family get-together started in Westphalia in 1954 and has met every two years since then. To date it is "the largest family reunion in Texas."

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 84, Dallas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, THOMAS LESLIE PAROSKI, SR., who passed away April 20, 1998, at the age of 74.

Survivors include his wife, Janie Paroski of Dallas; five sons, Tom Paroski of Santa Paula, California, James Paroski of Garland, Michael Paroski of Garland, Bill Paroski of Midlothian, and Lawrence Paroski of Sunnyvale, California; two daughters, Mary E. Colvin of Plano and Frances E. Tiller of Garland; one brother, Bob Paroski of Dallas; and one sister, Mary Fain of Dallas; and 11 grandchildren.

Services were held on April 22 at Hughes Funeral Home North Chapel.

Resolution Committee, Evelyn Salac Justine Yeager

Members of Lodge 154, Fort Worth, wish to express sympathy to the family of our departed brother, RAYMOND JOSEPH BURDA. Mr. Burda, age 74, who retired as an aircraft mechanic after 52 years of service at General Dynamics, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at a Fort Worth hospital.

Mr. Burda was born May 6, 1923, in Bremond.

He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and a 1941 graduate of North Side High School.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 154.

He was always very proud to be an associate of General Dynamics. He began his career in California and came to Fort Worth when this plant opened. He was one of the few original employees honored on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of General Dynamics in Fort Worth.

His proudest accomplishment was his five children.

Survivors are his wife of 48 years, Mary Ann Burda; sons, Raymond Joseph Burda, Jr. and wife Vicki of Amarillo, Glen Richard Burda and wife Suzanne of Southlake, and Charles Patrick Burda and wife Debbie of Keller; daughters, Judy Ann Kwong and husband Peter of Plano and Amy Louise Crowley and husband Mark of Bedford; 10 grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; brother, Joseph B. Burda, Jr. of Burleson; and sister, Virginia Steele of Fort Worth.

Mr. Hanzlicek was born January 5, 1934, in West, Texas. He was preceded in death by one brother, Johnny Hanzlicek.

In Memory of Betty Jo Janecek Betty Jo Janecek, 67, of Humble and formerly of Victoria, died Monday, April 20, 1998.

She was born January 27, 1931, in Port Lavaca, to the late Joseph W. and Rosa Dusek Kucera. She was a homemaker and was a member of First English Lutheran Church and SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria.

Survivors are her husband, Ben F. Janecek, Jr.; daughter, Laura Lynn Janecek of Akin; South Carolina; brothers, Robert L. Kucera of Victoria and Joseph W. Kucera, Jr. of Corpus Christi; and one grandchild.

Mrs. Janecek was preceded in death by her brother, George F. Kucera.

Services were at Rosewood Funeral Chapels with the Revs. Bill Hassel and David Tart officiating.

Burial was at Shillerville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Roy Polasek, Milo Stolz, Barney Janecka, James Dusek, Vance Cribb, and Mark Stolz.

Honorary pallbearers were Oscar Braeuer, Dale Lesikar, Marvin Lesikar, Frank Sisti, and Bobby Sisti.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, HAROLD MEDIE CHAFIN, who passed away Thursday, April 23, 1998.

Brother Chafin was born May 5, 1932, in Lampasas, Texas. He reached the age of 65 and was the seventh child of seven children born to James L. Meade Chafin and Mary Josephine Oney Chafin. He graduated from high school in Georgetown, Texas, in 1950, and attended Southwestern University in Georgetown from 1950 to 1954.

During that year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served at the rank of Sergeant First Class. In 1957, he returned to Southwestern University to complete his Bachelor of Science degree in education. From 1957 to 1962, he moved to Caldwell serving as a teacher, football coach and athletic director for the Caldwell Independent School District.

On July 27, 1958, Harold and Lillie Bell Stefka were married in the New Tabor Brethren Church. From 1962 to 1966, Harold was sales manager for B&B Sporting Goods in Waco. From Waco, he moved his family to Rockdale where he became a teacher and football/track coach from 1967 to 1974. During this time, he also attended Texas A&M University where he received his Masters Degree in educational administration. From 1974 to 1975, he attended Southwest Texas University and was awarded his certficiate in administration. He served as Rockdale High School Principal from 1974 to 1979. In 1980, he moved his family to Huntington and served as superintendent of schools until 1990. .

He was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church where he served on the Board of Elders, taught Sunday School, and was the president of the Men's Brotherhood. He was also a past member of many committees; Region VII Education Service Center Executive Board, Texas Equity Center Board of Directors, Huntington Housing Authority Board of Directors, served many times as a United Way County Chairman. The most recent committee he served on was Caldwell ISD Bond Committee. He was a lifetime member of TSTA and a member of Phi Delta Kappa. After retiring, he chose to return to Caldwell where he enjoyed renewed friendships and made many new friends. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid sports fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, James L., Olin, Othel, and Oney Chafin; and one brother-in-law, Ralph Liese.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Chafin of Caldwell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathey and Barney

Homeyer of Caldwell and Cindy and Chad Nerren of Lufkin; one brother and sister-in-law, Leo and Nancy Chafin of New Braunfels; one foster brother, James Martin of Coral Gables, Florida; one sister, Mary Lou Liese of Arlington; four sisters-in-law, Lynn Chafin of Houma, Louisiana, Betty Chafin of Sinton, Norma Chafin of Georgetown, and Shirley Chafin of Pearl; and three grandchildren, Dennis Homeyer, Catie Homeyer, and Logan Nerren.

Funeral services for Brother Chafin were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday April 26, 1998, at New Tabor Brethren Church with Rev. Skip Stutts and Rev. John Baletka officiating. Interment followed in the New Tabor Brethren Church Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were John K. Liese, Jeff Chafin, Brad Chafin, Dennis Chafin, Scott Chafin, Steve Orsag, John Stefka III, and Billy Roskey. Honorary pallbearers were all other nephews, Jack Churchill, Fred Johnson, Bob Martin, Tom Underwood, Jim Foreman, Tot Morehe.ad, and the New Tabor Men's Brotherhood.

May our departed lodge brother rest in eternal peace and his memory live amongst us forever.

Sister Belicek was born in Czechoslovakia to John and Marie Toniger Zajicek, Sr. She lived in Temple for the past 18 years after living in Holland. She married Joseph Belicek on October 24, 1929, in Temple. She was a member of the Brethren church.

Survivors are her son, Joe D. Belicek of Holland; two daughters, Helen C. Newman and Mary Ruth Babcock, both of Temple, three brothers, Joe Zajicek of Rogers, and Raymond Zajicek and Leopold Zajicek, both of Holland; and two sisters, Stella Mainord of Holland and Emma Macek of Burlington; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services for Sister Belicek were at 2 p.m. Monday, May 11 at Sheffield Funeral Home in Rogers with the Rev. Gene Kotrla officiating. Burial was in Val Verde Cemetery.

Wednesday, May 13 at . Davis Funeral Home in East Bernard with interment following at the Czech National Cemetery in East Bernard. Deacon David Mitchell officiated the services.

Visitation was held from 4 to 9 p.m.

Tuesday, May 12 and from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday, May 13 at Davis Funeral Home in East Bernard.

Mrs. Sulak was born January 17, 1909, in East Bernard to Frank Janik, Jr. and Julia Beran Janik. She was reared and attended school in the Bernard Prairie area and married Charlie Sulak of Taverner on March 12, 1927.

They farmed in the Taverner community where he was also constable and deputy until his death on February 7, 1971. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 28.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Sulak; parents, Frank Jr. and Julia Janik; sisters, Julia Kubena, Betty Zotyka Walker, Annie Bartos, and Lillie Havran; and her brothers, Frank and John Janik.

She is survived by her brothers, Ed Janik and his wife Gustie of East Bernard, Joe Janik and his wife Lena of Wharton, and Rudolph Janik and his wife Martha of Wharton; one sister, Louise Kral of Hungerford; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Edwin Janik, Marvin Janik, Kenny Kubicek, Marvin Sulak, Tilford Sulak, and Simon Bartos.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Fund or the American Cancer Society or to the East Bernard High School Scholarship Fund.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 28 and served in the US Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sophie Millie Jochec; his parents, William and Mary Jochec; a sister, Annie Jurek; and a brother, Adoph Jochec.

Survivors include a daughter, Georgia Marsalia and husband Floyd of Eagle Lake; a son, Johnnie Jochec of East Bernard; grandchi/dren, Kimberly Marsalia of Eagle Lake and Audra Marsalia of Eagle Lake; a greatgrandchild, Jordan Paul Gutierrez of Eagle Lake; and a sister, Gusty Janik of East Bernard.

Pallbearers were Edwin Jochec, Edwin Janik, Jody Chmelik, Michael Chmelik, Eugene Jochec, and Willie Jurek.

Mrs. Safarik was a homemaker and a lifetime resident of the Taylor area.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 29, American Legion Auxiliary, the Thrall Volunteer Fireman's Auxiliary, and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Paul Safarik, Sr. on April 22, 1982, and a brother, Raymond Skrhak.

In Memory of Lillian Smith Lillian (Vanek) Smith, 77, of Waco died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at her residence. Services were at 2 p.m.

Interment was at Mart Cemetery. The family received visitors from 6 to 8 p.m.

Sunday, April 26 at the funeral home.

She was born December 7, 1920, in Hungerford, Texas, to Frank Joe Vanek and Helen Louise Wasek Vanek. After moving to Waco in 1940, Mrs. Smith worked at Weston's Bakery, then worked in child care before retiring from Connally High School as a cafeteria worker. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 35, Elk for 61 years. Her grandmother and grandfather Frantisek and Barbara Vanek were charter members of Lodge 19, Lavaca County.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Richard F. Smith; three brothers, Frank Vanek, Jr., Charlie Vanek, and Julius Vanek; and sister, 011ie McDaniel.

Survivors include three daughters, Sharlyn Pennington of Manilla, Indiana, Beverly Knapp of Waco and Debris Woods and her husband Larry of China Spring; five grandchildren, Richard Pennington of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Erica Knapp of Waco, Andrea Knapp of Waco, Blaine Kempf and Stacy Kempf of China Spring; and four great-grandchildren.

DANNY EUGENE Harr of Mexia, Texas, who died Friday, April 17, 1998, at the age of 64 years.

Services were held Sunday, April 19 at the First Presbyterian Church in Mexia with the Rev. Ken Lane officiating. Burial took place at Point Enterprise Cemetery.

Brother Danny was a lifelong resident of Mexia and worked for 25 years in reflexology. He was an elder of First Presbyterian Church and a former twoterm mayor of Mexia. He became member of SPJST Lodge 66 in May, 1973.

Brother Hitt was preceded in death by his father, Herman E. Hitt; and two brothers, Herman Hitt, Jr. and Dick Hitt.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Hitt of Mexia; his mother, Andrea Hitt of Mexia; four daughters and sons-in-law, Karel and Zack Ayers of Alvin, Texas, Connie and Paul Johnson of Alvin, Laurie and Mark Chaney of Mexia, and Kathryn and Jimmy Rogers of Mexia; and eight grandchildren.

Emil J. Morris For as long as Hearts remember We never part With those we love So dear.

Emil was born to the late John and Frances Morris on May 6, 1913. He passed away April 22, 1998, at the age of 84. He was a farmer, a member of RVOS, but is well known to SPJST Lodge 148, Blessing. Emil held office for 30 years in our lodge. He will be truly missed in our lodge.

Survivors are his wife, Marie Morris; a daughter, Rosemarie Maroul; a son, Lawrence Morris; a sister, Betty Kana; a brother, Alvin Morris; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A rosary was held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing, Texas, in his honor.

Emil was laid to rest at St Peter's Catholic Cemetery near Blessing.

Emil will be missed in our small community.

of Willie Dedek Willie Dedek of Hayward passed away May 24, 1998, in Castro Valley.

Mr. Dedek was aged 84 years.

A native of Fort Worth, Willie, also known as "Tex," worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Oakland for 35 years. He came to California from Texas in 1941 and built his first home in Hayward in 1951. He was a member of Lodge 148, Blessing.

Graveside services were Friday, May 29, 1998, at Lone Tree Cemetery in Hayward at 11 a.m. Visitation was at Sorenson Bros. Mortuary on Thursday, May 28 from 12 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Dedek was the beloved husband of the late Mary Dedek; dear father of Stanley and Larry Dedek, both of Hayward; father-in-law of. Sharon Dedek of Hayward; loving grandfather of Dara Dedek and Kim Milina, both of San Lorenzo; and dear brother of Joe Dedek of Texas and Bessie Hemza of Hayward.

Joseph L. Juran was born August 24, 1909, in Fort Worth and was a lifelong resident. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Moslah Shrine, Knights Templar, and Eastern Star. He served on the wardrobe committee for several years with the Scottish Rite. He was past president of SPJST Lodge 92.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mary Juran, on May 30, 1995.

Survivors are a son and daughter-inlaw, Joe F. and Glenda Juran of Fort Worth; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Gordon Gibson of Fort Worth; sister Lillie McMillen of Fort Worth; and grandchildren, Mary Kaye Luce, Lisa M. Resolution Commitee, Rose Jaworski Victoria Murphy Mona Lee Hattendorf -SPJST-

Roxie Mary Frnka, born an identical twin in Columbus, Texas, on Columbus Day, October 12, 1915, to Assistant State Attorney Joseph Vine and Anna Marie Frnka, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at Life Care hospital after an initial hospitalization at St. Paul's Hospital on April 20, 1998. Roxie resided in Dallas since 1977, following a transfer with Mobil Oil in 1985 after 22 years of service in accounts receivable and always enjoyed attending the Mobil Retiree's annital Christmas Party. While in Philadelphia, Roxie and her twin, Ruby, were very active at the Don Rodden Theatre at LaSalle University but Roxie's most celebrated role was being cast by Oliver Stone as "Mr. Lee's" landlady in the movie "JFK." Although Roxie never married, she dedicated herself to helping others.

She was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dallas where she and Ruby managed the parish's clothes closet for many years.

Roxie was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the America's Court Mary Immaculate No. 1719, SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas, and was also a volunteer for St. Paul's Hospital Auxiliary.

Roxie was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ida Anna, an infant, Evelyn Pridgen and Lillie Georg of Columbus, and brothers Meteor N. Frnka of Austin and Earl Joe Frnka, Sr. of Columbus.

She is survived by twin sister, Ruby Driscoll of Dallas, and sisters, Margaret F. Janicek and husband Lawrence of Wallis, Texas, and Mildred F. Hoenighaus and husband Fred of Houston, Texas; sisters-in-law, Carrie Witter Frnka of Austin and Eva C. Frnka of Columbus; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

The CDA and parish rosary was Thursday, June 4, 1998, at 7 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home. The funeral mass was celebrated on Friday, June 5, 1998, at 2 p.m. from St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial followed at the Frnka, family plot in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus, Texas.

Donations may be made to St. Paul's Hospital auxiliary or St. Vincent's Center at Holy Trinity Parish.

John Kubin, 86, passed away Sunday, June 7, 1998. He was a long-time resident of Alvin and Surfside, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Rolene; three children, son Frank and wife Laurel, daughter Jeanette and husband Bob Dearman, and daughter Sue and husband Mike Rabenaldt; a sister, Augustina Kudelka; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kubin was a member of SPJST Lodge 149, Alvin. He had been an active member of the Surfside Rescue Squad and was a charter member. He was a permanent member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in which he served as commander for two years. He was also one of the founders of the Surfside Volunteer Fire Department.

Graveside services were held Friday, June 12 at the Mustang Lutheran Cemetery. The service was performed by Rev. Robert Magee from the Light Christian Church.

Arrangements were made by Froburg Funeral Home of Alvin, Texas.

CARRIE N. VITOVSKY. Mass of Christian burial for Carrie Neicylene Vitovsky, 49, was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 1998, in St. Johns Catholic Church with Rev. Fred Caldwell as celebrant. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 1, 1998, in the Keever Chapel.

Entombment was in St. Joseph's Mausoleum under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary with the following serving as pallbearers: Robert Zabojnik, Jason Zhanel, Albert Haskovec, Tony R. Vitovsky, Danny Cruz, Michael Rounsavall, Gene Knize, and Olin D. Bowers.

She died Friday, May 29, 1998, near Houston from injuries received in an auto accident.

She was born April 4, 1949, in Ennis, the daughter of Albert and Joan

Toals Haskovec, Sr. As a small child she moved to Groesbeck. In 1953, she returned to Ennis and was a 1967 graduate of St. John High School. She then attended Navarro College where she earned her Associate Degree. She then attended UTA. She was first employed with Southern Auto, later for Citizen National Bank and a short time for John Deere. She later worked for Tropar Trophy as the account manager, celebrating her 20-year anniversray on January 24, 1998. She also worked for Transportation Tax Specialist. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, and St. Johns Catholic Church.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Bryan and Evette Vitovsky of Ennis; two daughters, Julie and her husband Glenn Zabojnik and Vickie Vitovsky and her fiance Greg Housewright of Ennis; her mother and stepfather, Joan and Leonard Walker of Ennis; a sister and her husband, Regina and Wayne Whaley of Ennis; a brother, Albert Haskovec, Jr. of Ennis; a grandmother, Gladys Toals of Ennis; six nieces; two nephews; and one greatniece.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Haskovec, Sr. in 1983.

She will be missed by her family and many freinds.

MARY ELIZABETH JEZ, who passed away May 1, 1998, at the age of 78. Mrs. Jez was born in Paris, Arkansas, to the parentage of Geard Edd and Agirtha Wiesle Baumgartner.

She married Adolph G. Jez on February 11, 1943. She was a member

of St. Michael's Catholic Church in McKinney, Texas, a member and cofounder of McKinney Five-Oh, was instrumental in organizing a group to promote a senior citizens center at Towne Lake in McKinney, and a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas.

Survivors include her husband, Adolph G. Jez of Princton, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ray Robinson of Princton; grandson, John Robinson; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Lisa and Lewis Barrington; and brother-in-law, Bill Dunn.

Rosary was held May 5 at the Belew Funeral Home in McKinney. Mass was held on May 6 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in McKinney with Father Carl Vogel officiating.

Entombment was at Calvary Hill Mausoleum in Dallas.

I ask that all campers arrive Friday at Camp Lone Star by 3:15 p.m. that afternoon. Please do not be late. We will depart from camp Sunday at 11 p.m.

Please do not bring coolers with food or drinks in them. They are not

allowed in the cabins and we will have plenty of refreshments provided.

There will be a time set up during the day when the trading post will be open selling ice cream, candy, etc. If you wish to purchase some of these things, please bring some money with you to camp to do so with. State Duchess anticipates summer fun at SPJST outings Dear Readers, I am so glad that summer is here. I will be in the fourth grade when school begins in August. I am taking swimming lessons so I will be ready to swim at camp. District. Six Camp is Father's Day weekend.

On the Fourth of July, I will be in the Shiner Half Moon Holiday Parade with the rest of the State Royalty for our final parade. We are hoping to have the other youth clubs in District Six with us in the parade. Please try to come!

Dear Readers, On my recent trip to Ennis, Texas, I had lots of fun. My sister Elizabeth was representing the SPJST in the National Polka Festival Parade. Ennis seemed to me to be a town which has lots in common with West. The Parade that my sister was in was very interesting. There were lots of floats from neighboring areas as well as lots of polka music floats. I hope I will get to go to Ennis again one day to again enjoy the sights and sounds of the Polka Festival.

Lodge 107, Floresville youth member enjoys LIT camp

Dear Readers and Members, Our next youth club meeting will be Friday, July 3 at 7 p.m. It will be in the Annex building behind the hall. At this meeting, we will finalize the plans for our July 4 fund raiser.

Dear Readers, I went to LIT camp on June 5 to 7. We learned a lot of different games, swam, played basketball, learned different survival stuff and had a dance. I got to meet a lot of different people and made new friends. It rained for a few hours on the 5th, then it warmed up a little bit.

The second day, we played a lot of games. We split up into three groups and did different survival techniques. We built a tent between trees out of twine and a tarp. Another station was trying to build a fire with a bow and a stick. No one was able to start a fire. The last station was using a compass to find a point.

Then, Joni had a man come to give a seminar on financial and credit card issues.

After the talk, we had pizza for dinner.

When everyone was finished eating, we had free time. At 9 p.m., everyone headed down to the cafeteria and danced. At 12 p.m. to 2 a.m., we had free time.

The next morning, everyone was tired from dancing, talking and swimming.

Everyone got addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. All the districts had a planning session for district camp.

I hope to see all my new friends at State YAD.

July 18—Swim Party On July 18, we will have a swimming party. It begins at 4 p.m. and will be at the Elks Lodge in Temple. We will be allowed to bring a friend so that they can see what fun SPJST youth club members have.

Scrapbook Meeting This Friday The next scrapbook committee meeting will be June 19 at 7 p.m. at my house. Supper will be provided.

District YAD is June 28 District Two YAD will be June 28 in Taylor. I hope you all have turned in your cards by now and have your projects ready!

June 7 Meeting Report The June 7 meeting of Lodge 107 came to order at 3 p.m. We had nine members, two adults and one guest. The guest introduced was Travis Purchis. The minutes were read and approved.

Youth Leader Wendy announced we will have a swim party on Tuesday, June 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the Floresville City Pool. There we will have more information on camp and directions to New Braunfels for District Seven YAD. The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m. We had cake and soda after the meeting. All the members got to work on their page for the scrapbook. The lodge's junior group talent practiced their dance.

CZECH HERITAGE AND CULTURE

Wharton County Czech Heritage Society reports on June meeting The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society met Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the First Christian Church in El Campo, Texas. Fifty-five guests attended.

President Marie Matcek opened the meeting and Merle Adamcik gave the prayer. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the Czech National Anthem, "Kde Domov Muj" ("Where Is My Home"), accompanied by Ethel Meek on the piano.

Virginia Balusek, program chairperson, introduced Deena Richter of Weimer and Coleen Zimmerhanzel of Columbus. A very informative program was presented on "Ways To Preserve Our Heritage." Ms. Richter is a consultant with Creative Memories and lectures on ways to preserve photographs for the future. Coleen Zimmerhanzel is an interior designer and consultant and specializes in custom framing of pictures and photographs.

Ms. Richter stated that some of the top dangers to photos are acid produced from chemical woodpulps, lignin found in tree pulp which causes paper to turn brown, humidity, extreme heat, cardboard boxes, cellophane tape, glue, ballpoint pens, markers, and light. Acid, PVC or lignin content in your storage material can effect the life expectancy of your photos.

She spoke on how to preserve and store your photos for the future.

Ms. Zimmerhanzel brought several framed pictures and items and showed how they can be framed correctly to be preserved for the future. Basically, the best way to preserve photography is to use acid-free matting and backing, and metal frames are the best. Ms. Zimmerhanzel stated that almost any type of an item can be framed and preserved. A question and answer period followed.

President Matcek announced that the Wharton County Chapter gave two scholarships to graduating high school seniors in El Campo. They are Kris Kubala and Robert Strnadel.

Secretary Gladys Rod read the minutes of the previous meeting and Treasurer Rita Vanek gave the treasurer's report.

Ethel Meek gave a report on the trip she and her husband made to the state meeting of the Czech Heritage Society in Rowena, Texas, in March. She was presented a book on immigration to Texas from 1850 to the early 1900s to be given to the Wharton County Library (El Campo). Besides the names of immigrants to Texas, it includes naturalization records and immigrant's ships which sailed to Galveston. Each chapter in the state received the book to be used

Reader seeks missing kin Dear Friends, I have decided to send you a letter, although I do not know if my letter will be received by due person.

My grandmother's name was Marie Vrbova and my grandfather's name was Stepan Vrba. They lived in Ostrava - Kuncice. Both died approximately 30 years ago. My father, Milan Vrba, was their foster son.

My grandmother had a sister in Port Arthur, Texas, and her name was Kristyna Shmit. When I was a child, she used to send us packets very often.

I know that Kristyna had a son and a daughter and they were older than me. Kristyna worked in a shop and her husband owned a gas filling station. Her son worked as a ship cook.

I am 41 years old, married and have two sons. The older one, Robert, passed hotel school and works in Germany now. The younger one, Vaclav, is studying at the university. Both are learning English.

I am writing this letter to learn something about my family as since my grandmother died, we have no information about our family in America and I hope this letter will get to somebody who will know something about the Shmit family and will be so kind and let me know.

Merle Adamcik, Vice President, was named as the coordinator to raise money for various projects. There will be a drive-thru meal and the date will be announced later.

It was announced that the second annual Czech Genealogy Seminar will be held on Saturday, July 25 in Richmond, Texas, at the George Memorial Library. Five lecturers will present genealogical references, studies of Czech Republic, immigration land records, and research on the internet.

Seating is limited to 150 people.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 1.

The meeting concluded with refreshments being served.

Ethel Kuzell Meek, Reporter —SPJST-

Czech native assisting with exhibits at Hill College heritage museum Peter Kubera, a student from the Czech Republic in Europe, has begun helping prepare exhibits for the new Texas Heritage Museum at Hill College, Hillsboro, Texas. The native of Havirov in the Czech region of Silesia came to the United States for a year of study at Hill College, the oldest community-supported two-year college in Texas.

The Texas Heritage Museum is a new museum of Texas military history, and Kubera has enjoyed his work here.

"I like the job," he said, adding that for him the part-time position meant "more interesting work" than in other opportunities.

"I was always interested in history," the student stated. Looking at the artifact display modules on which he has been working, he commented, "I was interested in this stuff."

Kubera was indeed interested in America and its history, for he came to Hill College on a basketball scholarship with the goals of both learning more about the United States and mastering written and spoken English. He seems to have succeeded in both aims, for he now speaks English fluently and shows considerable knowledge of his host country.

The Czech student already holds his baccalaureate degree in political science from Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic. He returns home this summer, with plans to begin work on his M.A. degree in political science this fall. His career goal is to enter government service in international relations, perhaps helping to represent the Czech Republic overseas.

"This is a fast time in my country," Kubera reported. "You can get better jobs if you know more than one language."

The Czech student is pleased to have worked in the Texas Heritage Museum. "I have a good feeling about it. Now I will be able to leave something here that will remain many years," he concluded.
