'98 SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament Combines Fun, Friends and Family by Barbara Rosenkranz State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Brrrr. At 7:30 in the morning on Saturday, April 18, Mr. Leshikar, Barbara Jean Kovacevich and myself found ourselves in a bit of a chill at Lions Park in Temple. In fact it was so chilly, by the time the players began to arrive, we had lit a fire in the pavilion fireplace. The warmth was comforting and the fire put me in a "camping kind of mood." After a breakfast of juice, coffee, kolaches and fruit, the players were ready to get started. In fact, they played so efficiently that before lunch was served, they had already played seven games. Mr. Leshikar decided to ask the players if they wanted to play another seven games following lunch.

They readily agreed. A total of 14 games in all were played. Ringer after ringer echoed across beautiful Lions Park. Kyle and Jay Hubik, sons of George and Kelly Hubik of Lodge 87, Temple, amused themselves on the colorful new playground while their daddy and his partner, Doug Waskow, sweated out the competition against George and Renee Tomastik of Lodge 177, Academy. Don't tell Renee, but the players were a little nervous about her skill with the shoes! Dana McAdams and daughter Brandy Johnson of Lodge 66, Waco were making the male teams a bit nervous as well. Gladys Yates and George Pauling, always good sports, had a tough morning of it, but turned things around in the afternoon and took five of seven games. Jerry and Jimmy Turek, father and son team from Lodge 48, Beyersville, found the competition very tough this year. They hung in there like the good sports they are, too. (Continued on page four.)

examine our changing needs and to help our volunteer sales force spread the word about SPJST insurance. At the same time, we can communicate news of what our local lodges are doing to improve life in our communities. Through these kinds of discussions, we can help attract new members to our fraternal order. As an added incentive, members who recommend at least two new members in 1998 will have the opportunity to earn a variety of SPJST promotional items. Please refer to the back page of this week's Vestnik for membership drive guidelines and a listing of the premium incentives that are being offered.
