SPJST Awards Scholarships and Leadership Grants On pages ten through twelve of this issue, the SPJST announces its 1998 Scholarship and Leadership Grant recipients. Congratulations to all of these young people on their selection.

Please note that we will be profiling all of our spring graduates who responded to the call for biographical information in next week's Vestnik.

Graduation - from high school or college - is an exciting time. marks the passage from one stage of life to another. For that reasom it can also be a little frightening. With things always changing, it's nice to have some stability - a good friend --- someone you can depend on. The SPJST has the capacity to promote those kinds of relationships. It can happen when lodge members work together in the pursuit of meaningful goals. It can be a wonderful feeling!

Once again, in compiling this week's Vestnik- I am compelled to express my faith in the long-term growth and development of our Society. To accomplish anything of importance takes initiative, creativity, planning and dedication. A lot of that feeling comes through in the reports filed in our Lodge Letters Section ...

Active members provide the basis for a strong SPJST. If you're a new member - or if you haven't been active in a while - please consider getting involved. Note the calendar section that appears on page 23 and you'll see that quite a few lodges will be hosting, picnics, homecomings and other special events in the coming spring and summer months.' Have some fun with it and make a positive difference in your community. `i-'7VP' Flag Day Essay Contest The flag stands for all that we hold dear -Freedom, Democracy, Government of the People, by the People, and for the People.

-Henry Cabot Lodge, 1915 President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day. While Flag Day was a popular celebration in scores of communities after Wilson's proclamation, it didn't receive its Congressional designation until 1949. In 1998, the SPJST joins its sister fraternal benefit societies

across the country in paying tribute to our national symbol of liberty and freedom. In conjunction with this observance, the SPJST is sponsoring a Flag Day Essay Contest. Topics for 1998 are as follows: • Why Our Flag is Special; and • The Ways I Can Honor My Flag and Country Participation in the Flag Day Essay Contest is open to young people ages 14 through 18. To qualify, essays must be a minimum of 150 words.

The Flag Day Essay Contest winner will receive $100 and have his or her winning essay published in the Vestnik and read at the SPJST Home Office flag raising ceremony on Friday, June 12, 1998. Vte le State Youth Director Announces Resignation State Youth Director Joni Lange recently announced her resignation from a full time position in order to work with the Temple Chamber of Commerce as a program coordinator.

Joni has worked in the position of State Youth Director since 1991.

"Joni will continue on a part-time basis, conducting the summer youth program until August 31st," says Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, adding that, "She has done an outstanding job for the SPJST and will continue to do so."

Applications for the State Youth Director position will be posted in the Vesntik at a later date.

The Supreme Lodge Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and took a moment of silence in memory of the deceased members.

Director Vanek welcomed Editor Vanicek to the meeting.

MINUTES - The minutes were reviewed page by page. On page 198, first paragraph, the last sentence was changed to, "Part of the reason for this is because the amount of Universal Life dump-ins were less." On page 199, second paragraph, first line, the word "authorize" was changed to "amend". On page 200, under Lodge Refund the year should be "1997" instead of "1998". On page 202, under District Three, the first sentence is to be replaced with the following: Director Krizan mentioned the importance of having a time clock to document tardiness and absences and the Society would benefit from this in the future and he inquired as to whether the Society ever had a time clock.

On page 202, paragraphs four and five are to be removed and replaced with the following two paragraphs: In reporting on his target lodges, Director Krizan mentioned that Lodge 5, Pilot Point/Tioga continues to increase its membership, will qualify for the platinum award in 1997, has added another new sales representative, and will start its new youth club next month. In keeping with its successful reactivation, the membership recently voted to start a building fund in hopes of building their own lodge home soon. In regards to Lodge 54, West, Director Krizan mentioned that he attended their annual meeting in November in which they elected a new lodge president, voted to continue meeting quarterly, expressed an interest in starting a youth club if a youth leader can be found and announced future fund raisers to help remodel their lodge building. Director Krizan also mentioned that he attended the Lodge 54 Christmas Party on December 7 and was very impressed with the large attendance of adult members and youth.

In his other old business, Director Krizan mentioned that Lodge 6, Cottonwood has finished its restoration project. He also requested that information be obtained to study the feasibility of adding a 30 year term or life/term contract to our insurance products. He also expressed a need for some sort of answering machine capable of receiving messages when the office is closed, for the officers to meet regularly on a weekly basis to coordinate day-to-day problems, and for the LAM to send acknowledgments for all donations.

On page 207, both paragraphs under District Three are to be replaced with the following: Director Krizan stated that he wishes to keep Lodges 5 and 54 on his designated list for another year and upon recommendation by the president and vice president, he agreed to add Lodge 110, Kaufman and Lodge 195, Cleburne as new target lodges for 1998. Director Krizan then inquired as to the procedure used in assigning insurance quotas to each district and mentioned that uniformity should be used in all cases so as to be fair to those concerned.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to reconsider his motion of January 1997, to authorize FICs who are not employees and who sell $1 million of insurance the year before to attend the NAFIC convention. The motion carried unanimously. Director Krizan then moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to authorize any FIC who is not an employee, sells $1 million of insurance the previous year, to attend either the NAFIc or TFC provided that the convention is held in Texas and that the Society will only pay mileage, meals, and lodging. The motion passed unanimously.

Director Krizan then invited everyone to attend the Spring District Three meeting on April 26 at Lodge 66 in Elm Mott and the District Three YAD on June 28 at Lodge 84 in Dallas. Director Krizan then mentioned the following subjects for consideration and study by the Supreme Lodge: 1.. Phase I, II, & III environmental inspections for real estate 2. Year 2000 conversion 3. Liability exposure from second-hand smoke in local lodge buildings 4. Cut-off date on existing policy of the Supreme Lodge to not allow any additional lodges permission to go from monthly to quarterly meetings.

There was a lengthy discussion concerning actions which come before the Supreme Lodge that are not placed on the agenda. President Leshikar expressed concern over items being brought up during the meeting that are not on the agen-

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, May 13, 1998 da with action being taken based on complaints when sources of the complaint are not named.

Vice President Mikeska expressed the appreciation of all the Officers, Directors, and the Editor for the salary increases.

With reference to following the Supreme Lodge meeting agenda, Vice President Mikeska stated his opinion was that the agenda should be prepared as provided in the By-Laws and the agenda should be followed; however, if an item comes up as a consequende from another action or if an item arises otherwise that needs to be acted on, the Supreme Lodge should be allowed to add that item to its agenda.

LODGE OFFICERS INCENTIVES - President Leshikar informed the Supreme Lodge members that Vice President Mikeska and himself have been discussing different approaches to recognize the local lodge officers through the Local Lodge Incentive Program. The Program needs to get the local lodge officers excited. President Leshikar and Vice President Mikeska will report back at the July Supreme Lodge meeting with ideas for the Local Lodge Officers Incentive Program.

President Leshikar moved for the Supreme Lodge to follow By-Law 37 (b) (1) by having an agenda published and followed and if an item comes up in the interim from the agenda being published and the meeting, the item may be put on the agenda at the beginning of the meeting. The Supreme Lodge members expressed concern with this limitation because sometimes items may come up as a consequence of another action during the meeting and this will make their agendas inflexible and unresponsive. The motion failed due to lack of a second.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, to insert all the changes to District Three old business and new business. The motion carried unanimously.

Director Bayer made a motion, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to accept the minutes with the corrections. Voting in favor were Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Vavra, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. Voting against was President Leshikar.

FINANCE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin read the recommendations from the Finance Committee.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Broz, to accept the Finance Committee's recommendation to an increase of 2.3 percent for the qualified recipients of the SPJST Retirement Pension Plan to be effective January 1, 1998. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Vavra, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Klinkovsky. The motion carried.

There was a discussion concerning the camp allocation recommendations by the Finance Committee. The Supreme Lodge discussed the possibility of three camps and the logistics of funding the camp allocation.

Recess was taken from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m.

There was a discussion about the recommendation from the Finance Committee to support the Publication Committee's recommendation for the Supreme Lodge to invest the necessary funding to support the development and maintenance of an SPJST home page on the World Wide Web. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, to authorize Editor Vanicek to be in charge of the SPJST home page on the World Wide Web and make recommendations at the next Supreme Lodge meeting. Voting in favor were Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Vavra, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Harms, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer.

President Leshikar abstained. The motion carried.

SALARY REFERENDUM - Henry L. S. Jezek, CPA, the Society's Independent Auditor, was welcomed to the meeting. Mr. Jezek certified that only he and his staff have seen the salary referendum and honorary title ballots. He certified the results of the salary referendum vote and the honorary title vote. The certification from Mr. Jezek will become a part of the policy exhibit file. The ballots will be destroyed in ten days. The following is the results of the returned ballots.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR - State Youth Director Lange's report was reviewed. It was suggested to investigate the possibility of having the Youth Royalty and Youth Achievement Day on the same day.

It was stated that the State Youth Director is not expecting any changes to the State Youth Rule Book for the next two to four years. It was recommended for the Youth Department to look at ways to keep from having to reprint the Rule Book every time to cut expenses.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz's report was reviewed. SFAC Rosenkranz presented the percentage of lodges in each district that she feels are not active.

Legal Advisor Kacir and Director Krizan requested a listing of the specific lodges that were on the list.

After further discussion, the meeting adjourned at 5:05 p.m.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz's report presented the proposed dates for future state tournaments and possible fraternal benefits.

The discussion of the camp allocation continued. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to postpone any actions concerning the Finance Committee's recommendation on the camp allocation for 90 days until the officers have a chance to learn the reasoning from the Finance Committee's recommendation and discuss the recommendation with the District Youth Counselors.

The Supreme Lodge went into executive session to discuss a personnel matter until 10:55 a.m.

There was a discussion of the policy regarding mileage for employees traveling for the Society. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Krizan, for the Supreme Lodge's policy on mileage, that is paid to employees who are required to travel with their supervisor's approval, to be: 1. On certain trips, if due to distance, it is advantageous for the employee to drive their personal auto, then mileage may be paid from their home to the destination and return home.

2. On weekdays, when a Society auto is used and the employee returns the same day, mileage will not be paid from home to the office and return.

3. On weekdays in rare instances, if a Society auto is not available for a night meeting, mileage will be paid for use of personal auto.

It was declared that in no case will an employee be paid mileage to pick up a Society automobile. Voting in favor were Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Vavra, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, Director Bayer, Legal Advisor Kacir and Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. Voting against were President Leshikar and Vice President Mikeska.

LAM REPORT - President Leshikar reported that the library and museum had 448 visitors during the first quarter of 1998. Of these visitors, 50 were from another state and two were visiting from abroad. He reviewed the recommendations of the LAM Committee at the 1996 Convention. President Leshikar expressed a need to upgrade the computer with the genealogy data. Director Bayer moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to refer to the EDP Committee for bids of a computer for genealogy data. Motion carried unanimously.

EDITOR - Editor Vanicek delivered his quarterly summary of activities, including an update on the SPJST Statewide Charities. He mentioned that there would be articles in the Vestnik on each of the statewide charities. He also announced that Mr. Urbis finished recording the music in March and that the cassettes and compact discs would be ready to distribute in mid-June.

Wednesday, May 13, 1998—VESTNIK/5 Editor Vanicek stated that District Two will have a Fraternal Fest on June 14, 1998, to draw attention to the statewide charities and the related recording project. He added that District Two expressed an interest in having the Flag Day Celebration in conjunction with the Fraternal Fest.

There was a discussion about the SPJST calendar. The Editor informed the Supreme Lodge that requests for bids have been mailed to the printers who have placed bids in the past and a notice requesting outside bidding would be posted in the Vestnik.

The Supreme Lodge Members were informed that there is going to be a special Vestru■ issue promoting the Society's lending program and insurance products on April 29, 1998.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, to authorize the Officers and Editor to open the bids and award the contract for the printing of the SPJST calendar. The motion carried unanimously.

Editor Vanicek presented several ideas for improving organizational communications and product marketing.

It was discussed whether the Communications Specialist should be placed under the supervision of the Editor instead of the President. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to accept the recommendation from the Publication Committee and place the Communications Assistant under the supervision of the Editor. The motion carried unanimously.

SALES - Vice President Mikeska reported that sales are better this quarter than they were this time last year. He suggested doing a company-wide training on conservation of certificates. He commented that there are a large number of members that have not been contacted by their sales representative in years.

NEW LODGES - Vice President Mikeska reported on the status of the new lodges in process. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to extend the deadline for the new lodges in process to July 31, 1998. The motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that the 990/990T forms are due to the Internal Revenue Service in May, 1998. §he stated that there are 42 lodges that have not submitted any correspondence to the Home Office concerning the 990/990T forms for 1997.

TELEPHONES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin announced that there has been an answering machine installed at the Home Office to take messages at times other than regular business hours.

VESTNIK - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the total Vestnik subscription list now stands at 9,962. The weekly postage amounts to approximately $1,700 and $1,150 for publishing the Vestnik.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the Independent Auditors began their audit on January 1, 1998, and will finish the audit procedure by May 31, 1998. The Audit should be delivered to the Texas Department of Insurance by June 30, 1998.

TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE AUDIT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on a tentative report from the Texas Department of Insurance which shows no discrepancies of any magnitude. He stated that the final report should be received in a few months.

LODGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM FOR 1998 - The final guidelines for the 1998 Lodge Incentive program are: 1. Annuity certificates will count provided that the certificate holder is uninsurable.

2. Only the target premium counts towards premiums remitted on Universal Life Certificates.

3. Modified Whole Life certificates will not count towards the Incentive Program.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that based on certificates issued, one lodge has reached the Silver plateau, three lodges have reached Honorable Mention, and 11 lodges have reached the First Step.

ADVERTISING - Vice President Mikeska discussed new advertising on local radio stations and billboards in the Temple area.

NEW PRODUCTS - Vice President Mikeska explained that further research is needed on the new Whole Life and Whole Life Term products. He reported that SPJST started selling the Roth IRA on March 1, 1998. In addition, he reported that the IRS will begin their review of the Roth IRA and Traditional IRA documents in July.

FURNITURE/STAFF ARRANGEMENT - Vice President Mikeska reported that State Field Representative Wiest has been reassigned to Districts Five and Six. He reported that the position for a state field representative in District Seven has been announced and applications are being taken at this time.

Vice President Mikeska stated that he is researching the possibility of setting up a personal computer or a fax machine at Lodge 88 Houston so the District Five sales representatives can pick up certificate illustrations from the lodge.

LITIGATION/BANKRUPTCIES/FORECLOSURE - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on the mortgages and certificates in bankruptcy and the mortgages in process of foreclosure and possible litigation.

DISTRICT I - Director Vavra stated that he had received reports from the members who attended the Local Lodge Workshop and Incentive Banquet. They passed compliments on the friendliness and courtesy from the Lodge 186 members. It was suggested that at the next workshop to provide longer time for each session and provide more time for the members to socialize. It was also suggested to always have the Local Lodge Workshop and Incentive Banquet in Temple and not to have as many decorations.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky briefed the Supreme Lodge members on his

LICENSING/LEGISLATIVE DEVELOPMENTS - Vice President Mikeska,

attendance to FIC classes, Lodge 47, Seaton's meetings, the Tarok Tournament, the District Two spring meeting, and to Lodge 15, Buckholts and Lodge 155, Austin.

Legal Advisor Kacir and President Leshikar reported on attending meetings of the Working Group and the Advisor Committee for the Interim Study of Agents and Agent's License Statues in Texas. They further reported on the Texas Domiciled Fraternals. It was announced that the Working Committee has agreed to set aside one day to discuss the licensing of sales representatives from Fraternal Societies. The choices available to the Society were again discussed.

They are: (1) go with licensing; (2) try to get a broad grandfather clause with an exemption; or (3) fight licensing. After much discussion, it was decided that preparation should be made in case the decision by the Texas Insurance Department is not in our favor and to start preparing for licensing. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to authorize the Vice President to study the possibility of a sponsor for the sales representatives and to determine what the best route will be to prepare the sales representatives for licensing. The motion carried unanimously.

SALES REPRESENTATIVES - The Directors will present FIC certificates and pins at area dinners. State Field Manager McBride and Kathy Fritz are now FICFs. LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that she has not received the local lodge officer listings from Lodge 29, Taylor; Lodge 174,

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan thanked Chairman Vanek for instituting the target lodge program a year ago, for his report at the Local Lodge Workshop and asked that next year a report may be given by each director for his district.

Director Krizan asked that a uniform definition be de4eloped for targeted lodges.

Vice President Mikeska responded that the officers will try to present one at the next Supreme Lodge meeting.

Director Krizan reported that Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga has grown in membership and they have a new youth club He further reported that they are considering buying a future building site. Director Krizan reported that Lodge 54, West continues to meet quarterly and recently held a large fund raiser with over 700 plates sold to obtain funds for their building upgrade and maintenance.

Director Krizan asked if a program can be developed to encourage our nonreporting lodges to communicate with the Home Office. The officers agreed to bring a plan to the next Supreme Lodge meeting. Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the IRS will be auditing some of the fraternal benefit societies. He further reported that we have been requested to notify the National Fraternal Congress if any local lodge receives a questionnaire from the IRS.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, May 13, 1998 Director Krizan questioned the policy of allowing the employees one hour off for personal time with pay. It was explained that the purpose of this was so the employees will make their appointments at either the beginning or the end of the work day. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to eliminate the one hour of personal time for employees. Voting in favor were Director Krizan, Director Broz, and Director Hanus. Voting against were President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Vavra, Director Klinkovsky, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. The motion failed.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz reported on meetings that he had attended in his district. He stated that he is working with Lodge 76, Wichita Falls and Lodge 157, Lubbock. He further stated that there are two lodges in District Four that are dormant and Lodge 73, Seymour is willing to merge with both dormant lodges.

DIRECTOR V - Director Hanus thanked Vice President Mikeska for attending the District Five meeting. Director Hanus reported Lodge 196, Houston had a dance recently and the dance seemed to be a success. President Leshikar reported that a committee at Lodge 196, Houston-West was appointed to call members to see if the members will volunteer to help with duties at the lodge. Director Hanus reported on the success of the telephone committee.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer reported on attending meetings at Lodge 185, New Braunfels; Lodge 133, San Antonio; Lodge 161, Jourdanton; Lodge 79, Corpus Christi; Lodge 117, Robstown; and Lodge 93, Hobson. He reported on the two sales classes that he had attended and commented that both classes had a good turn out. Director Bayer thanked President Leshikar for attending the District Seven spring meeting. Director Bayer inquired as to why the Supreme Lodge had not seen the results of the Youth Survey as requested in the May 1997 Supreme Lodge meeting. President Leshikar responded that the survey will be available at the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

Director Bayer presented a copy of the Knights of Columbus reporting hook. The forms for the entire year are mailed to the lodge officers at once. Director Bayer expressed the opinion that this would be easier for the officers to keep up with and it would also cut expenses for the Home Office.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek reported on attending two sales classes; Lodge 40, El Campo/Hillje's Incentive Program; Lodge 28, East Bernard's 100th Anniversary Celebration; and the District Seven meeting. Director Vanek stated that he attended the FAC meeting at Lodge 40, El Campo/Hillje where there were 25 attendees representing seven lodges. He announced that 12 sales representatives in District Six completed the FIC course. Director Vanek stated that he has been working with Lodge 148, Blessing and he thinks this lodge has great potential.

Recess was taken from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. for the directors to audit the daily logs for the Officers, the Editor, the State Fraternal Activities. Coordinator, the State Field Manager, the State Youth Director, and state field representatives.

After the audit, Director Bayer reported that the directors would like two additional columns added showing time-in and time-out.

DANCE CLASS - President Leshikar presented a letter from Lodge 88, Houston requesting funding for the dance program for a longer time. There was a discussion as to how much the instructors charge and how much the students pay and what the students pay for. Currently, there is a dance class at Lodge 88, Houston and a class in District Two. It was pointed out that a dance class is being formed in District Six. Editor Vanicek was requested to explain how District Two had set up their dance class. District Two is hoping to make their dance class self-sustaining.

President Leshikar was requested to bring a recommendation to the next Supreme Lodge meeting about the funding of the dance classes and figures of the cost and number of students for the current year.

CZECH CLASS - President Leshikar presented a letter from J.C. Dressler requesting assistance in funding a Czech class at the Czech Culture Center in Houston. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, to make a $200 donation to the Czech Culture Center for a Czech class. The donation will be $200 per class session limited to $400 total and the sessions will have at least 8 two-hour sessions. The motion carried unanimously.

BARBECUE/GOLF TOURNAMENT - There was a discussion about the possibility of having a statewide barbecue cook-off or golf tournament with the proceeds going to the statewide charities. There was concern expressed as to whether or not the barbecue cook-off and golf tournament would generate any proceeds for the SPJST charities after the expenses. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Hanus, for the President's Department to present a proposal for a statewide barbecue cook-off and/or golf tournament at the July Supreme Lodge meeting. The motion carried unanimously.

SCHOLARSHIPS - President Leshikar stated that since the Supreme Lodge donates $25,000 to the scholarship fund and the amount of the scholarships increased from $500 to $750, the Society will be giving 33 scholarships instead of 50. Vice President Mikeska suggested the possibility of having a golf tournament to create an endowment for the Scholarship Fund. Director Krizan spoke in favor of establishing an additional scholarship program that would fund larger scholar-

ships. By common consent, action on the scholarship fund was tabled until the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

75-YEAR PINS - President Leshikar informed the Supreme Lodge members that the 75-year pin has been redesigned.

DELINQUENCIES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that 18 mortgage loans are past due 90 days or more, in process of foreclosure, in process of bankruptcy, or in tax suit. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, to accept the recommendation on the delinquent mortgage loans. The motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to set a $8,000 loss reserve for the past due mortgage loans. The motion carried unanimously.

MORTGAGE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented comparisons of the differences in monthly payments of a 20-year mortgage loan and a 30-year mortgage loan. There was a lengthy discussion concerning the comparisons.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, to offer the members an option of a 30-year mortgage loan and for all the payments on all mortgage loans to be monthly payments except when 70 percent or more of the borrower's income is from farming. The motion carried unanimously.

There was a discussion about the types of loans that the Supreme Lodge has named as unacceptable. After a review of this list, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, for the Supreme Lodge to make loans on unimproved lots and apartment buildings of four units or less provided all other guidelines are met. The motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented changes to the application fees for mortgage loans. A discussion followed concerning application fees. President Leshikar and Director Broz expressed a need for lower application fees for the small loans. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, to lower the application fees of the mortgage loans as revised from the recommendation. Voting in favor were Vice President Mikeska, SecretaryTreasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Vavra, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. Voting against were Director Broz and President Leshikar.

There have been requests by members to try to simplify the mortgage loan closing process. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin and Legal Advisor Kacir presented the possibility of the Legal Office contacting the title company and ordering a title policy if the applicant wanted the Legal Office to do this. The borrower would continue to bear all costs for the title policy. Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded by Director Broz, to offer this service to our borrowers. The motion carried unanimously.

There was a discussion of the policy the Society has on releasing land on a mortgage loan. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to approve the following partial release policy. The motion carried unanimously.

In the event that the Investment Committee is requested to grant a partial release and in the event that the Committee decides it will not harm the remainder of the security and the partial release would be in the best interests of the investment, the partial release may be granted on the following basis: 1. Maker shall pay 150 percent of the amount originally loaned per acre in addition to the installments that have been made under the note plus value of any improvements as arrived at by the director and the Investment Committee.

2. Any parcel sought to be released shall front at the public road and shall continue to the back property line and be as wide at the back as it is in the front and shall be at the same width from front to back.

3. All the property shall continue to have access to the public road.

4. Until this note is paid in full, no easements for access shall be granted.

5. Any tract sought to be released must be contiguous to any previously released tract.

6. The borrower will furnish a survey at borrower's expense.

7. At this time the standard fee is $200 but can be revised by the officers at any time.

INTEREST SENSITIVE PRODUCTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented information on the investments allocated to match the Universal Life products.

There was a discussion of whether interest rates should be lowered based on the spread between the yield of allocated assets and the interest rate being paid.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to lower the interest rate of Universal Life to 6.75 percent. Voting in favor were Director Klinkovsky, Legal Advisor Kacir, and Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. Voting

INVESTMENTS - The investments from January, February, and March were reviewed. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to accept the investments from January 1, 1998, through March 31, 1998. Motion carried unanimously.

INCOME/EXPENSES FOR 1998 - Financial Secretary Mikulas presented the statement of income and expenses for the first three months of 1998. In comparing the income and expenses of 1998 with 1997, the income increased by 4 percent and the expenses increased by 7 percent during this time.

ANNUAL STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas stated that the annual statement for 1997 was filed with the Texas Department of Insurance on February 24, 1998. Henry L. S. Jezek, CPA, is currently auditing the annual statement figures.

RETIREES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on the participants and beneficiaries currently receiving benefits under the retirement plan. He presented the amount of increase that the Finance Committee recommends the retirees receive on their retirement payments. It was pointed out usually the Finance Committee makes a recommendation to increase the retirement amount every two years.

ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING - The paper shredder bought in 1984 became inoperable on March 21, 1998. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to ratify the purchase of the new shredder at a cost of $4,724. The motion carried unanimously.

ANNUITIES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that Annuity I was first sold in 1984. Currently there are 1,387 Annuity I certificates for a total amount of $21,595,298.32. There are 1,153 Annuity II certificates for a total value of $22,831,943.61. As of March 31, 1998, there are two Roth IRA's for a total amount of $21,125.08. The total amount deposited in Annuities for the first three months of 1998 was $1,027,501.05 with $315,213.56 of this amount being transferred from Annuity Ito Annuity II. There was $1,069,917.08 withdrawn during this period.

PURCHASES - Legal Advisor Kacir read By-Law Article 39 (c), 39 (j) and 40 (c). There was a discussion as to the amount in which the officers can spend without getting bids and the items that fall into the categories in which the ByLaws are referring. Financial Secretary Mikulas is to report to the Supreme Lodge on the type of purchases each department is making. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, for the officers to present a proposal concerning purchases and bids for purchases at the next Supreme Lodge meeting. The motion carried unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir stated that he would like to attend the Mortgage Lending Institute this fall. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by SecretaryTreasurer Anglin, to authorize Legal Advisor Kacir to attend the Mortgage Lending Institute. The motion carried unanimously.

DISTRICT I - Director Vavra inquired as to whether or not letters have been mailed to the local lodges to see if their lodge is interested in holding state tournaments. President Leshikar replied that the letters have been mailed to local lodges.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky presented a request from his district to order more Anniversary Cookbooks. There was a discussion as to the number of Anniversary Cookbooks to order. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, to order 2,000 Anniversary Cookbooks. The motion carried unanimously.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan presented a request from a member in his district that is requesting a mortgage loan for his home and business at the residential rate for 15 years. It was pointed out that the Society has a policy of requirements for residential and commercial loans. Director Krizan withdrew his request.

From another member, he asked for the Society to look into developing a cemetery marker that would indicate that the deceased was a SPJST member. Director Krizan inquired as to what the requirements are for a lodge to make a loan.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin replied that an application has to be completed and there is a requirement of 25 percent down. Secretary-Treasurer added that local

lodges do not have to pay an application fee. Director Krizan asked if the Supreme Lodge could advance funds against the anticipated Incentive Award.

Director Krizan was informed that in the past the Supreme Lodge has advanced funds against the premium refund but not Incentive Awards.

In response to questions from the recent workshop, Director Krizan stated that the By-Laws do not require the local lodge Grievance Committee to be a standing committee and may be implemented under Article 69 (d) as deemed necessary.

President Leshikar explained that the By-Laws do not require the Grievance Committee to be a standing committee; however, because the members want an immediate decision, it is best to have the committee in place.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz expressed his pride in his Czech heritage and the contributions the Supreme Lodge makes. He is concerned that all the Czech articles in the Vestnik may be a detriment to sales because prospective members may think they have to be of Czech ancestry to be a member. Director Broz inquired as to whether or not the name needs to be brought more current to help sales in the future. He invited everyone to Rowena on July 4, 1998, for their 100th Anniversary. The District Four meeting will be April 26, 1998, and everyone is invited.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus reported on Lodge 88, Houston and their inquiries on building retirement condos.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer reported on the note burning of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi this August and that Lodge 202, Jourdanton will hold the District Seven fall meeting. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Broz, for the Local Lodge Workshop and Incentive Banquet he held in the Temple area. The motion carried unanimously.

DISTRICT VI - Chairman Vanek reported Lodge 4, Hallettsville is interested in a dance class to begin this fall. He stated that so far eight people have shown an interest in this class. Chairman Vanek will be attending a social at Lodge 148, Blessing.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting is scheduled to begin July 7, 1998, at 8:30 a.m.

From the President's Office More Than a Song and A Dance Behind the Scenes at the Lodge Incentive Banquet and State Lodge Officers Workshop PART II

We can't blame the wind, but the sky fell. To clarify, a picture of the sky fell. The weak wallpaper paste would not stick the picture of the sky to the blue tarpaulin. No problem—we were creative people, we could deal with it.

In fact, Marie's solution of gluing polyfiberfill to the tarpaulin to create a "sky" had much more depth and effect than a one-dimensional picture. Marie worked for years with the extension office, creativity is inherent with her.

Marie, when the sky fell, you were the wind beneath my wings, dear!

Let it Bee, Let it Bee ...

George and Shirley Hlavinka have a sparkle about them. I call Shirley "smiley." George is the creator of the handmade beehive which graced the stage with the fountain of youth.

According to George, these kinds of beehives are indigenous to the Czech Republic. A particularly interesting feature of the hive is the handcarving attached to its sides. George says that each handmade hive in the Czech Republic has its own signature look and charismatic appeal. "Bee-sides" helping at Lodge 186, George and Shirley, like other SPJST members in the area, are instrumental in the development of the Burleson County Museum (Polasek house), where the beehive is permanently displayed, as well as involved in the Kolache Festival in Caldwell, Texas.

Don't Fence Me In ...

Apparently creativity runs in the family. JoAnne Barak, sister of Margaret Haisler, is a nurse by trade— an inspired decorator by admission.

What I brought to Caldwell was a piece of fence, several old wooden electrical spools, some big, big frames, a whole lot of blue gossamer, plus boxes of greenery, flowers and fake trees. What I didn't bring was a finished product. I thought the wooden fence would look good in the foyer.

Again, my expectations were exceeded. JoAnne asked me a few questions and then went to work. What she and Shirley Hlavinka created was a hint of

golden sunshine behind a veil of blue.

A wonderful backdrop for a sunflowered bit of fence and the graceful splashing fountain. The fountain in the foyer was provided by Helen Jurica.

Helen also provided the "rescued" antique stage curtain. (Helen, you inspired me to become a "herb gardener" and maybe raise sheep).

Amazing Grace ...

Grace Moore and Linda Cannon were responsible for handling the flowers. Lydia Shupak made arrangements for the beautiful fountain cake.

Thomas Cannon helped with clean up, as well as "Clint's boys" who helped setup and clean. Annie Polasek, Lettie Drgac, Olga Gloyna and Albina Beran prepared the goody bags provided by the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce.

It was amazing to see all of these people at Lodge 186 pitch right in and help in whatever capacity was needed.

In Perfect Harmony ...

After seeing Herman Gaskamp and me attempt to create a "fake" fountain, Margaret convinced me to purchase a wading pool and create a real fountain of youth. Although she couldn't work on finishing the project, her sister JoAnne completed the project beautifully. The volunteers of Lodge 186 consistently took my concept or ideas and built on them to create a beautiful, restful environment. It was an enjoyable time as we all worked in harmony toward the goal of holding a successful event for our fraternal brothers and sisters across the state.

Save the Last Dance for Me ...

Anton Haisler and his band consisting of Mayor Bernard Rychlik and Joe Rychlik, Sandra McKemie and Donald Haisler donated their time and talent to provide music during the lunch hour at the workshop on Saturday. We were treated to a practice session on Friday evening as we worked, but frankly, we were a little too tired to dance (we sang along and swayed some though).

Lodge 186, Caldwell is a very big lodge and we had traveled its length many times by Friday evening.

Henry Cttbot Lodge, 1915 President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day. While Flag Day was a popular celebration in scores of communities after Wilson's proclamation, it didn't receive its Congressional designation until 1949. In 1998, the SPJST joins its sister fraternal benefit societies across the country in paying tribute to our national symbol of liberty and freedom. In conjunction with this observance, the SPJST is sponsoring a Flag Day Essay Contest. Topics for 1998 are as follows: • Why Our Flag is Special; and • The Ways I Can Honor My Flag and Country Participation in the Flag Day Essay Contest is open to young people ages 14 through 18. To qualify, essays must be a minimum of 150 words. The Flag Day Essay Contest winner will receive $100 and have his or her winning essay published in the Vestnik and read at the SPJST Home Office flag raising ceremony on Friday, June 12, 1998. Lodge Letters Section Lodge 18, Elgin reports on April meeting Members of Lodge 18, Elgin met at their regular meeting April 21 at 7:30 p.m.

As it has been since the lodge has formed, the meetings begin with the pledge to our flag and a prayer to remember all our brothers and sisters.

The president called on Secretary Evelyn Gustafson to read a poem to all the members who give their time in doing volunteer work for the lodge.

Members were presented a beautiful gold star which each wore proudly.

Thank you, members, because without your help, we could not welcome our friends. Continue your support.

The roll call of officers showed all present.

Minutes were read and after a correction, they were approved.

Reports were heard from all officers. Youth Leader Ruby Bowen thanked the members for the donations for the Easter egg hunt which was a success. Sister Ruby is planning a May Fest on Sunday, May 24 at 3 p.m.

She is asking parents to please help get the children to be in it. They will be in the Taylor and Cyclone May Fetes.

All committees gave a very complete report.

Trustee Sac Reice asked to have a short meeting of the trustees after the general meeting.

Chairman Joe Haisler of the Rules and Regulations addressed the members on the progress of this item. After much discussion on the article, Katie Mogonye made a motion to take each article at a time, discuss it and make corrections. Due to the late hours, it was tabled for an early hour before the May regular meeting.

Lodge 18 1 Elgin hosts Texas Czech Her!tage and Cultural Center dance Members of Lodge 18, Elgin hosted a fund raiser for the LaGrange Project of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center.

There was beautiful music to listen or dance to for hours. Everyone enjoyed the speakers and especially Honorable John Sharp. The silent auction kept bidders busy jotting down their names and dollars.

The kitchen was busy serving wonderful food.

Everyone needs to be commended for the donation of items for the auction and the great cakes, cookies, pies, and kolaches. Also, thanks to the members who welcomed guests and helped the members of the Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. Thanks to all. Lodge 18 is proud!

SPJST honors retiring State Field Representative Helen Hegwood with Home Office luncheon A luncheon was held recently at the SPJST Home Office honoring retired State Field Representative Helen Hegwood. President Howard Leshikar, State Field Manager Gene McBride, and other staff members praised her for her years of service and her fraternal service. Vice President Leonard Mikeska presented her with a plaque recognizing her achievements and active involvement in SPJST as a State Field Representative.

Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard meets May 17 Dear Members, A reminder: Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its May monthly meeting this next Sunday, May 17. Gathering time is around 11:45 a.m. and the meeting will start at 12 noon. It will be held in the downstairs meeting room in the SPJST hall building at 106 Leveridge Street.

This is all due to a special buffet lunch to honor Mother's Day, 50-year pin recipients and lodge volunteers.

The agenda will focus mainly on the awarding of pins, and only business that must be handled will be accepted.

As mentioned above, the regular after-the-meeting fraternal hour buffet luncheon will not be held after the meeting for a full meal is being planned and will start serving at 12 noon.

Brother Howard Leshikar, the Supreme Lodge President, will present the 50-year pins.

reports on lodge, member activities Many thanks to the officers, sales representatives and involved members for a very successful 1997. A fund raiser was held that brought very good results. We also received the gold award from the Supreme Lodge for the second consecutive year. This involved quite a bit of work by our sales representatives and members. A very enjoyable Christmas party was held with a large number in attendance.

so far which proved to be very successful. Several of us attended the workshop and lodge recognition and awards banquet in Caldwell.

Our first quarterly meeting of 1998 was held on March 13. All reports were given and accepted as read. A moment of silence was observed in memory of our members who died since our last meeting, namely Rosalie V. Parma who died on November 19, 1997, Joseph J. Srubar who died on February 19, 1998, and Nell Ruth Jung who died on February 25, 1998. Our sympathies are extended to these families.

New applicants are David and Debbie Coleman, Wilburn and Jay Dean Willis, Linsay Kolar, and Mason P. Tobola. These are credited to Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza. We welcome these to our lodge and hope to have them involved in our meetings.

Members celebrating 50 years of membership in 1998 are Patricia Lynn Cloud, Anne Emery, Carolyn Liu, Carole Jean McNeil, and Irene J. Pisek.

Jon Vaculik was selected Student of the Month in February at the West Middle School. Jana Vaculik made the honor roll this past six-weeks. They are children of Jan and Marcela Vaculik.

Linsay Kolar, daughter of David and Rebecca Kolar of West, was named Sophomore of the Year at West High School. By receiving this honor, Linsay's name will be added to a list of candidates in the district in which the West Kiwanis Club resides. Linsay was chosen based on her leadership ability, community activities and for spreading the word about Key Clubs and Kiwanis.

Crystal Mynar, daughter of George and Mary Lou Mynar, won the champion in the goat competition during the stock show held in Waco recently. Crystal is a sophomore at West High School.

Our heartiest congratulations tb the above mentioned students for their achievements. This information was compiled by FAC Maxine Sefcik. We will have more to report regarding our student members in the next report.

Our next meeting will be held on June 5 at 7 p.m. We hope to have a large number in attendance at this meeting.

66, Waco meets Monday, May 18 Lodge

Lodge 66, Waco is rescheduling the May meeting to May 18 to 6:30 p.m.

Members are asked to bring snacks, sandwiches, etc. We will have a cleanup from the arts and crafts show of the past weekend.

The June meeting has been changed to June 14 at 2:30 p.m. We will honor mothers, fathers, and 50-year pin recipients. We will serve a fried chicken dinner. Members are asked to bring desserts.

79, Corpus Christi honors members with dinner and awards presentation ceremony Lodge

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi held their awards dinner on April 19, 1998, with 107 members and guests present.

Among the guests, we were honored to have with us Corpus Christi Mayor Loyd Neal, Councilwoman Betty Jean Longoria, SPJST District Seven Director Bob Bayer and his wife Polly, and Jim Wiest, former District Seven State Field Representative.

We want to say thanks to all of the above guests in helping to hand out our many awards.

We enjoyed a great dinner, catered

by Jim Cave Restaurant, consisting of grilled chicken breast, baked potato, green beans, salad, rolls, cake and tea.

It was very tasty and enjoyed by all.

Before the meeting and during the meal, we were entertained by nice accordion music played by Jerry Mojzis. Thanks, Jerry!

After a short meeting, we started our awards ceremony with the reading

of congratulatory letters to Lodge 79 from Governor George Bush, Jr., Senator Kay B. Hutchinson, and U.S. Representative Soloman Ortiz.

We started by recognizing our 50year members with their 50-year pins and a certificate from Governor George Bush, Jr. Recipients were: Ted Stasney Ann Thompson Mary Havel Max Veit Father Ed Kucera Robert Hanus Robert Hanus was the only recipient present. A 50-year pin was also presented to Victor Huff-12 years late.

Victor had never received his pin.

Next, we honored our 34 volunteers. We used the SPJST ritual and it was well-received. We missed our State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz who could not be present because of car trouble. We missed you, Barbara!

Ina Wilkie, who was born in Boston, Massachusetts, was made an "Honorary Texan" by our Governor.

Ina is our secretary Jill Sijansky's mother.

The "Yellow Rose of Texas" award is given to Texas women in recognition of their community involvement and accomplishments. Receiving this award were: Mary F. Elzner Barbara Rosenkranz Mildred Elzner Della Elzner Anna M. Moss Mildred Elzner also received a $25 gift certificate for being our 1997 Fraternalist of the Year.

The last award was the presentation to Jerry Elzner of "Admiral in the Texas Navy" from Governor Bush.

This award is given to persons with some ties to Texas in recognition of their community involvement and accomplishments. (Jerry served 21 years in the U.S. Army.)

After the final award, we had some great door prizes. We want to thank all the businesses for their donations.

Also, a big thanks to Brother Bayer for all the SPJST door prizes he donated.

The meeting was adjourned and a lot of fellowship followed. A good, good time was had by all.

79, Corpus Christi reports on April meeting, awards dinner Lodge

The awards dinner on Sunday, April 19 was delicious and there were 105 members and guests who enjoyed the meal. The members who did not come really missed a good one. Why not come next time?

After the dinner, a brief meeting was held. The reading of minutes was dispensed with because a copy of the minutes was given to everyone. On the sick list is Sister Anita Regmund, who is doing a lot better. New member accepted was Irene Soto and taking additional insurance were Rev. George Harris and Anita Sacky.

Brother Jim Wiest spoke on what the SPJST offers and changes, such as the new Roth IRA is now available.

Adding to membership is most important. We can do better and we always need more members. One way is to bring someone to the meetings. He said he has been transferred to District Five and Six as sales representative but

he is still a member of Lodge 79 and will attend our meetings when he can.

District Seven Director Bob Bayer read a list of benefits for SPJST. He talked about mortgage loans, which are available to members on homes, etc.

There is now a 30-year mortgage loan that just passed with 7.5 percent. He also stated that application fees have been drastically reduced.

President Jerry Sijansky said if members are not receiving the Vestnik, there is a list to write down names and addresses to get on the mailing list.

Sister Anna Marie Moss spoke about ads in the 1998 Slet Souvenir Book for Sokol. A motion was made and approved that Lodge 79 take a half-page ad for $55.

The April donation of $50 was given to the Gymnast Fund of Sokol, Corpus Christi.

We had a special guest—Corpus Christi Mayor Loyd Neal came for a short period and presented some of the awards. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner was in charge of the awards program, and he was assisted by Bob Bayer, Jim Wiest, and Corpus Christi Councilwoman Betty Jean Longoria. Only one of this year's 50-year members was present. He was Robert Hanus. Victor Huff was awarded his 50-year pin—just 12 years late.

I will let FAC Jerry Elzner make a full report on the awards. He has all the information.

After all the awards were presented, the names for door prizes were drawn.

We thank Bob Bayer for donating some of the prizes. The lodge donated several prizes. The lucky winners were George Marek, Louis Sacky, Helen Pavelka, Randy Sijansky, Candace Quinones, Mark Rebecek, Dan Jackson, Melisa Carter, Susan Sacky, Charles Majek III, Carrie Veselka, Peggy Janota, and Ruth Marek.

Next Meeting May 17 The next meeting will be held Sunday, May 17. We will celebrate Mother's Day, a week late. The meeting starts at 2 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 79 - Sokol Hall on 5502 Kostoryz Road.

After the meeting, all can enjoy the social for which each family is asked to bring some goodies to eat.

On a personal note, when I walked in on Sunday, April 19, Brother Bob Bayer met me at the door and gave me a gallon jar full of pecan brittle. He said I won it at a raffle at Lodge 107, Floresville. The candy is very delicious! Thanks a lot!

80, Holland invites you to May 17 dinner and dance Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, President Harold Rohde called the meeting of Lodge 80, Holland to order at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 1998.

The usual opening formalities were observed.

Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham reported Vice President G.L. Brisbin was absent due to him attending another meeting. Brother Latham read the

minutes from the previous meeting and they were approved as read. The reports from all committees were out due to the end of the month being on a Thursday and only one day to get all the final tallies done.

New policy members into the lodge were Jacob Smith and Gloria Sala.

Thank-you notes were received from the families of Rudy Kaderka and Gwen Bell for the donation to the scholarship fund in memory of their loved ones.

A thank-you was received from Angie Decker for the four years of sup-. port to her college degree from our Moran Burns Scholarship she received after graduation. She will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Tarleton State University on May 9, 1998.

May 17 Fund Raiser President Rohde stated the lodge fund raiser will be Sunday, May 17, 1998. We will have a noon meal of barbecued chicken and sausage, potatoes, beans, slaw, pickles, onions, bread, and tea for $6 per plate that day but advanced tickets are $4. A free dance from 2 to 6 p.m. by Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six will be that afternoon.

84, Dallas members celebrate 88th anniversary Lodge

Dear Members, Our 88th anniversary celebration is a memory but members who came enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by Bessie's Catering, followed by a memorial service remembering members who are no longer with us. Our guest speaker was District Three Director John Krizan. We thank him for his words and time on a subject he knows well—SPJST. President Leshikar came as a guest representing the Home Office and also spoke briefly to those present. Next, many members received acknowledgements and a "thank you" for the work they do for the betterment of our lodge.

Pictures of members receiving this honor will be published but if you fail to see it, just look around. Each will be wearing a silver star on their lapel or collar. Congratulations!

Our 50-year members were named and each will receive a pin to wear.

Our youth gave a short program and everyone enjoyed all the talent and energy displayed.

All in all, our celebration went well but we wish you could have been among the group who came. Our president thanks all who helped in any way to remember this day—especially the pastry makers. Thank you again.

April Meeting Report President Yeager asked for a moment of silence at our Monday meeting for two departed members.

Committee Reports The sunshine committee reported sympathy cards were sent to Anne Haluska, Patricia Carr and family on the loss of husband Michael; get-well cards to Vicki Kohn, Carole Nemec, Rusty Sims, Rose Hackworth, Raymond Rejcek, Holly Jarma, Sydney Pechal and Walter Fridrich.

Sister Vickie Kohn is one of our sunshine ladies. We hope the arm she broke is not the one she addresses the cards she sends out. Heal quickly, Vickie!

A congratulations card was sent to the Pitts family (Nicki Pokladnik). A baby girl arrived at their home.

Sister Carlyn Ondrusek reported on the Fraternal Council. The May 11 meeting at the Czech Club was hosted

by WFLA. Sister Bessie Petr reported on Czech Culture. She stated plans are underway for the Texas State Fair Meeting of Czechs and other nations at the fair.

Youth Leader Petr reported all who attended the lock-in had a great time.

Food, drinks, games and a early egg hunt (on Saturday morning) was just a few things the group participated in. Plans are in the making to visit St. Joseph's rest home (the date escapes me).

Lodge 88, Houston making big plans for June 7 Homecoming The day will start at 11 a.m. with a free barbecue dinner to all members who present a current membership card and a charge of 25 cents for any take home plate. Guest dinners will be $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Tea or coffee will be included with dinner but pastry will be available for a minimum charge.

Entertainment in the ballroom will consist of the Lodge Concert Orchestra and the Choral Group performing at 11:30 a.m. Following them will be the Adult Folk Dance Club and the Youth Dance Class. A battle dance between the Moonriders and the Donnie Wavra is from 2 to 8 p.m. with a charge of $5 for the dance.

Outside entertainment will include raffles and booths by various lodge committees and a silent auction and homemade ice cream by the youth club.

I would like to see you lodge members and guests come and visit with all other members and enjoy a day of good fun and entertainment.

Sister Evelyn Salac reported on the Living Memorial. Adolph Salac of the house committee reported fixing the ceiling over the dance floor, and he thanked Brother John Becan for help fixing the PA system. Brother Becan can fix anything that goes with the sound system.

97, Placedo enjoys social with RVOS Lodge 55 Lodge

SPJST Lodge 97, Placedo held a joint social with RVOS Lodge 55 on Sunday, April 21 at DaCosta Sons of Hermann Hall. A delicious barbecue meal was enjoyed by all.

After door prizes were awarded, the youth club presented 10 honorees with SPJST Everyday Hero pins. Christine Dum read a poem about volunteers.

The honorees receiving certificates and pins were:

Vanek Brothers Band and Country Crossfire. Snacks were enjoyed throughout the afternoon.

On Sunday, April 5, 1998, our monthly meeting was called to order

by President Kieth Kieschnick.

We had 34 members. All stood for the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

The roll call of officers showed all present, except our Flag Bearer Michael Schleider.

Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from the previous month's meetings. These were approved as read. All officers' reports were read.

The youth club wishes to thank the following for their donations for the youth raffle: Robert and Mary Ann Kieschnick, Henry and Rita Hermis, Millie and Henry Linhart, Frank and Dorothy Tumis, Sidon and Rosie Tumis, Lorraine Motl, and Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Schmidt.

The sick committee reports Mr. Doskocil was in the hospital.

Hopefully, he is doing much better at this time.

The Shiller-Hejl Reunion is Saturday, June 6, 1998, at the VFW Hall in Circleville, Texas, located five miles north of Taylor on Highway 95.

We ask everyone to please bring a food dish for the noon buffet.

Tea, coffee, silverware and plates will be furnished.

Remember to bring an item to donate for the country store auction to be held after lunch.

Trojacek Family Reunion

Our lodge fish fry was discussed and will be held at our lodge building on August 29, 1998. Serving is from 4 to 8 p.m. Advance tickets are $6 and tickets at the door are $6.50. The cost for under age 12 is $3.50, and ages 6 and under are free. The dance is free.

We will also have a raffle, and members are asked to bring a door prize to be given away periodically during the evening.

Our senior door prize winner was Adela Stein.

Shiller-Hejl Reunion

The descendants of the late John, Vaclav, Frank, Josef, Anton, Mary (Chapek) and Annie (Krajca)—children of Va-clay Trojacek and Veronica Honsa Trojacek—will meet for their reunion on June 7, '1998 at the Sokol Activity Center, located on East Highway 34 in Ennis, Texas. Family members and friends are encouraged to mark their calendars.

Registration and visiting will begin at 10 a.m. Dinner will be served at 12:30. In the afternoon there will be a short meeting and plenty of time to visit.

Each family is asked to bring a meat, vegetable or salad and dessert to feed their family, Paper .products, plastic ware, coffee, and tea, will be provided. There will be a charge of $5 per family and $2.50 for singles to cover costs of the supplies and the facility. The Sokol Club Room will be open for the purchase of other refreshments.

Tables will be set up to display pictures and memorabilia. Please bring something to exhibit. Your help to update your family information in genealogy books kept by some family members will be appreciated. Since the beginning of our reunions, many have shared in the stories brought from the homeland, as well as the events of the descendants.

Hejl Reunion The descendants of Frank and Helen Hejl will hold their 43rd annual reunion at Seaton Star Hall, SPJST Lodge 47 in Seaton, Texas, on June 14, 1998. Frank and Helen Patava Hejl immigrated to Texas in 1870 from Horni Cermna, Bohemia, which is now a part of the Czech Republic.

A covered dish meal will be served at approximately 12:45 p.m.

Families are requested to bring covered dishes to share. Table service, drinks, bread, etc. will be furnished.

Newly obtained genealogical information concerning the Hejl Family dating back to 1586 will be shared. Do you know what the original Hejl family name was?

Buckholts School and Community Reunion The annual Buckholts School and Community Reunion will be held in the SPJST Hall in Buckholts, Texas, on Saturday, June 6, 1998.

Featured will be a catered buffet served from 11:30 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. Tickets for the meal, which will be available at the door the day of the reunion, will sell for $6 each.

Members of the 1948 graduating class of Buckholts High School, who will be celebrating their 50th anniversary, will be seated at the head table.

Thanks for the Help!

Dear Members, On March 7 and 8, District Five took their trip to Corpus Christi, Texas.

We spent Saturday night aboard the USS Lexington, otherwise known as the "Lady" or the "Blue Ghost," as she was called by Tokyo Rose. She earned her famous nickname, the "Blue Ghost," because of her non-camouflaged blue color scheme and because she was repeatedly and incorrectly reported sunk by the Japanese propagandist Tokyo Rose. The "Lady Lex" is the fifth ship to be given this historic name.

We became shipmates of the U.S. Navy once we boarded and inducted to this great ship's roster. We did everything according to the U.S. Navy Rules. It was a blast!

The young people really learned a lot and had fun, too. The adults enjoyed themselves, also, but we sure found out soon enough that our legs are not quite as seaworthy as we thought.

This trip was organized and put together by my wonderful assistant Jeanette Bender. She is to be commended for all the hard work she did in making sure this event went off without a hitch. The thought of this trip was mentioned to Jeanette and she took off running.

Lodges 88, 142 and 196, all of Houston, were in the group to make this trip. There were 36 youth and adults. As a token of thanks from District Five, we purchased everyone a tee-shirt of the "Lady Lexington."

Our District Five President Evelyn Mikeska also went. Evelyn is very involved in what the youth do. We really appreciate her being at our various functions the district youth have.

20/VESTNIK—Wednesday, May 6, 1998 really having fun. Barbara L. Gonzales had a blast, too! With me and the "red light that stays on all night," I sure was wishing for a "sling shot" because it shone right in my face all night. But all in all, it was great.

E.J. Bender was there to make sure we stayed well aboard the ship. He would not allow us to get "sea sick."

Thank you, Jeanette and E.J., the district is grateful for all the time and energy you give to the youth and SPJST itself.

My job as DYC is made much easier with the people and leaders of the various lodges. You lodges out there who do not have a youth club, please get one. You will find that having a youth club really does add to your lodge. So get aboard in 1998! Form that youth club and get the young people involved in their mother lodge.

District Five young people visit USS Lexington Dear District Five Members and SPJST Readers, We had 36 youth and adults attend our annual spring field trip on March 21 and 22. This year, we traveled to Corpus Christi, Texas, and participated in the Live Aboard program on the USS Lexington. This is a naval aircraft carrier. During World War II this ship was the home to 3,000 sailors.

We arrived at 11 a.m. and were inducted into the Navy. From then on, we had to remember to keep our shirts tucked in, our hats on properly and our shoes tied or it would be pushups. We did have one little girl in our group who had to "drop and do 25" pushups.

We ate our meals in the galley and slept in the small bunks. I think the hardest part of all was climbing up and down the steep ladders and the girls having their bathroom facilities on another deck from where we slept.

Everyone onboard was required to participate in a fire drill. Guess what, when it was fire drill time, the fire was in our bunk section. I was in the sleeping quarters with six little girls. We had to hurry up two flights of stairs and get to the main deck of the ship. We made it and all survived.

We were the only group aboard who were not Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts.

The live aboard program is available to non-profit organizations.

We had three youths invited to participate in the patriotic programs.

Karen Bender from Lodge 88 was asked to participate in the flag folding ceremony on Saturday evening and Ronnie Hale of Lodge 196 and Alex Graska of Lodge 88 were asked to participate in the Sunday morning services. Ronnie carried the United States Navy flag and Alex had the honor of carrying the MIA-POW flag.

Also included in our trip was a visit to the Texas State Aquarium. We saw many interesting exhibits at the aquarium and saw porpoises jumping out of the waters in Corpus Christi Bay. We all had a great time and plan to take another excursion on the USS Lexington.

Czech Kolache-Klobase Festival June 13 in East Bernard The 8th Annual Czech KolacheKlobase Festival sponsored by East Bernard's KJT Lodge 40 will be held Saturday, June 13, 1998, in Riverside Hall in East Bernard, Texas. Held annually, this event brings people together in celebration of ethnic heritage and culture. Beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing nonstop until 1 a.m., this year's festival features an excellent lineup of entertainers including the Central Texas Sounds, Syl Krenek Orchestra, East Bernard Czech Singers, Vrazel Polka Band, the Red Ravens, and the popular Dale Nowak and Young Country, music representatives for Young Country Radio Station 95.7.

Festival admission remains at $5 per person (children 12 and under free).

The admission fee covers all entertainment and music provided by bands and singing groups in the hall and outside in the pavilion. Arts and crafts booths will be located both inside and outside the hall. Crafts and goods of every description will be available for sale.

This is a great opportunity to shop for beautiful crystal and ethnic souvenirs from the Czech Republic. All kinds of food booths will also be available to please every appetite and, of course, there will be thousands of kolaches for sale.

A kolache baking contest will be held again this year at 12:30 p.m. Cash prizes this year will be $100 first prize, $50 second prize, and $25 third prize in three different categories: fruit, miscellaneous, and sweet breads. In addition, winners will receive promotional gifts and courtesy packs provided by the sponsors of the contest. The Parade of Costumes is scheduled for 3 p.m. This colorful promenade of costumes is always a very pleasing and special part of the festival.

The P.O.L.K. of A.'s colorful red and whites plus the other beautifully costumed participants make a splendid array of color as they march around the hall. The Festival Committee urges anyone who has an ethnic costume to attend the festival and join in this colorful display. This year's march will be led by Albert and Margaret Smaistrla.

An exciting list of prizes highlights the raffle this year including a television set, a rod and reel, a set, of tires including balancing, handcrafted quilt, shotgun, watches, etc. Tickets are available from each KJT member and from various local businesses.

St. Christopher Catholic

Church sets June 10 Richard Urbis concert On Wednesday, June 10, 1998, noted pianist and composer Richard Urbis will present a solo concert of Czech works by Dusik, Smetana, Vorisek, Janacek and Dvorak at 7:30 p.m. at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 8150 Park Place in Houston.

Mr. Urbis will play his "Czech American Fantasy" and will premiere another original work "The Ghosts of Lidice" from his Elegy for Mankind.

This concert will mark the anniversary of the destruction of the Czech village of Lidice (about 18 km northwest of Prague). In retaliation for the assassination of a Nazi officer, Hitler ordered the annihilation of the inhabitants and buildings of Lidice. On June

10, 1942, the Nazis killed or deported the town's 560 inhabitants and burned and bulldozed the buildings. In a single day, the little mining village ceased to exist. The destruction of Lidice, however, backfired, electrifying the world and triggering a campaign to preserve the village's memory, as British miners in Birmingham raised the cry, eventually heard around the world, "Lidice shall live." The site of the former Lidice is now simply a green field, eloquent in its silence, but the memory of Lidice's history is still alive and cogent.

As a pianist and composer, Richard Urbis has performed widely in the United States and abroad. He performed in the 1980 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw and the 1982 Tchaichovsky International Competition in Moskow. In 1987, he was a finalist in the International New York Chopin Association Competition.

Last November, Urbis performed three concerts at the V Magno Festival Palafoxiano de Puebla in Mexico.

Richard Urbis' original works include his symphony "St. Joan of Arc," premiered by the Catalina Chamber Orchestra of Tuscon, Arizona, "Two Icons," performed frequently by the New York group Trio Sonata, and his "Suite," premiered by the Dallas Symphony.

Urbis received his Masters Degree from the Julliard School of Music in New York City and is a full time Professor of Music at the University of Texas at Brownsville. He is pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Arizona with pianist Dr. Paula Fan and composer Prof. Daniel Asia.

He has also been invited to lecture and to perform in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, in the summer and at the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. in the fall.
