This is a big weekend for the SPJST Youth Department. Youth leaders and supporters from around the state will be meeting at Camp Lone Star in La Grange for the 1998 Youth Leaders Workshop.

The two-day encampment will address a range of organizational and motivational topics.

Getting our younger generation involved in lodge activities is a hot topic in fraternal societies all over the country these days. In fact, the February edition of the Fraternal Monitor, a national trade journal for fraternal organizations, devotes considerable space to the topic of getting young people to take an active interest in their societies.

On a positive note, the story reports, many societies are able to attract younger members to one or more major events a year. For example, Catholic Knights, based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin offers a Walt Disney on Ice Show once a year in Milwaukee, Green Bay and a selected city in Minnesota. All three shows attract more than 10,000 Catholic Knights members - mostly young parents with children.

"We should give ourselves credit for achieving these goals. But, are young members looking to the fraternal system for a social outlet? Or have their expec-

The Points of Light Foundation in Washington, D.C., in cooperation with the private sector, has done some major research in this area. Something that they've found is that teens are ready, willing and able to volunteer their time for worthwhile endeavors. In fact, 93 percent of teens who were asked to volunteer, did volunteer! Why? According to their research: 1. They feel compassion for people in their community; 2. They like doing something for a cause that is important to them; and 3. They believe that, if they help others, others would help them in a time of need.

Based on the research that has been conducted, the younger generation wants to participate in programs that make a difference in their communities. And that's good news! Doing something for the community and the people who cannot do it for themselves fits right into the benevolent and humanitarian mission for which the fraternal system was organized more than 100 years ago.

Best wishes to those who will be participating in this weekend's workshop.

Around the State Lodge 24, Cyclone hosts District Two Spring Meeting March 15 Dear District Two Members, The District Two Spring Meeting will be held on Sunday, March. 15, 1998, at Lodge 24, Cyclone with registration at 1 p.m. The activities for the day are as follows: Registration — 1 to 2 p.m.

Meeting Call to Order — 2 p.m.

Adjournment — 5 p.m.

Evening Meal The evening fried chicken dinner will be furnished by Lodge 24, Cyclone and you need not bring anything for the meal. The meal will cost $2 per person. Drinks will be furnished by District Two from 1 to 1:45 p.m., at break time, and following the meeting. Donations for the drinks will be greatly appreciated. Contact the district officers if your lodge would like to donate funds for the drinks.

Share Your Good Ideas District Two Officers are taking suggestions for the fall meeting (fun day). We are asking that you submit a suggestion the day of the spring meeting (a box will be placed at the registration table). The person whose suggestion is chosen by District Two Officers will receive a $25 check and the mother lodge of the winner will receive the same. The winner will be announced after the spring meeting.

There is no age limit.

We will recognize the 50- and 75year and Age 96 members at this meeting so we encourage them to attend. The District Two Lodge Fraternalists of the Year will be recog nized. Lodges that are interested in hosting the Fall District Two Meeting on Sunday, September 20, 1998, should contact the district president prior to the meeting.

We look forward to seeing all of you at the meeting.

Youngsters between the ages 3 and 5 encouraged to join in Little Mr. and Miss Parade at District Two Spring Meeting Dear Members, District Two invites all young members, ages 3 to 5, to participate in the "Parade of Little Mr. and Miss SPJST," This exciting event will be Sunday, March 15 during the annual district spring meeting at Lodge 24, Cyclone.

Registration will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Each parent will he asked to fill out a short registration form.

The business meeting will begin at 2 p.m. Following the 3 p.m. break, the parade will begin. Each child will be asked to come on the stage for a short introduction. Sunday dress is recommended.

This is a great opportunity to recognize our future youth club members. The last couple of years, this has been so rewarding for all those in attendance. Everyone enjoys the young children so much.

Please spread the word and invite all the young ones to be "King" and "Queen" of the day.

Parents and grandparents, of course, you will not want to miss out!

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood members attend workshop and banquet Hi! For those of you unable to attend the SPJST Statewide Workshop and Incentive Awards Banquet held Saturday, February 28, you sure missed a great treat. It was hosted by Lodge 186 in Caldwell, Texas, with a capacity crowd, for which they did a super job.

There were 18 of our members that attended both the workshop and the banquet. The workshops were very 14TH ANNUAL SPJST STATE STRAIGHT DOMINO TOURNAMENT SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Attention Domino Players, Bobby Wuensche of Lodge 48, Beyersville has donated a set of handmade aluminum domino scorekeepers complete with storage pocket and matches. The scorekeepers will be auctioned off at the 1998 Straight Domino Tournament on Saturday, March 21, 1998 at Lodge 66, Waco. The proceeds will be given to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

informative. The sessions were approximately 15 minutes in length, so attendees had the opportunity to attend more than one. As a reporter, this was my first workshop to attend and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Fifth Annual SPJST Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards Banquet was also very nice with lots of awards being presented. Sister Lydia Dobecka was recognized during these events of the day as she was an Honorable Mention Fraternalist of the Year. There were 43 sales representatives that received individual recognition which there were three from Lodge 6. Congratulations to Brothers Robert Dobecka, Johnnie Krizan, and Jerry Kucera.

The most prestigious award for our lodge was winning the Platinum Award, which was a great honor.

There were only six lodges that acquired this award: Lodges 5, 6, 29, 80, 88, and 97. Congratulations to all of these lodges. Our lodge, as well as the others, received a very nice plaque for their 1997 accomplishments.

Our congratulations from Lodge 6 to all other lodge winners and all other individual brothers or sisters that may have won awards. After the awards, we all enjoyed a fine dinner.

Lodge 39, Bryan plans 50-year members recognition, Easter party for March 29 Lodge 39 Members and Friends, Please be advised that we will celebrate three 50-year membership recipients on March 29. There will be no meeting on our regular third Sunday only for the month of March. We will combine our lodge meeting, honor our 50-year members, and host an Easter party for the children on March 29.

A social and barbecue dinner will begin at 12 noon. Meat, bread, tea, coffee, plates, etc. will all be furnished by the lodge. We ask that each family bring a covered dish or dessert, or both, if you wish.

40, El CampoHillje to honor sales representatives at March 18 banquet

Lodge

SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje will honor the lodge sales representatives and new members Wednesday, March 18. 1998. The annual banquet will be held at Mikeska's Bar-B-Que on the Loop and Blue Creek Road, east of El Campo. Registration and the social begins at 6 p.m. A barbecue meal will be served at 7 p.m. Members are invited to come to the meeting and social to meet with the new members and the sales force that keeps our lodge growing. Without the sales representatives, the members could not enjoy the fellowship and socials the lodge holds during the year.

We met our goal for 1997 and earned the Gold Award at the incentive banquet held by the Home Office on February 28, 1998. Sales representatives to be honored are Frank Bacak, James Bacak, Leona Macha, Melvin Marek, Ray Pilgrim, and Frankie Vanek. These sales representatives sold 25 policies for 1997.

We want to welcome the new members for 1997 and hope to see all of you at the meeting.

Members are asked to bring an item for our raffle. The raffles that we are having help defray some of the expenses. There will be a $4 charge for guests.

Lodge 47, Seaton readies for busy March calendar Vice President Edwin Vasicek called the meeting to order Sunday, March 1, 1998, in the absence of President Edwin Pechal. Flag Bearers Rachel Baca and Jessica Kirby brought in the flags and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Members were asked to remain standing for a moment of silence in memory of deceased members Albert Schiller and Mary Leschber. May they rest in eternal peace.

We had one visitor, Willie Hegar.

We are always glad to have visitors.

The roll call of officers showed only Edwin Pechal absent with a very good excuse. Board member Edward Mares was absent. Sales Representatives Robert Heese and Vallie Zavodny were absent.

Secretary Kohutek read the minutes from the February meeting which were approved as read. Correspondence consisted of a letter telling us that Shannon Pechal (daughter of President Edwin and Judy Pechal) was on her way to Brenham and then to the Houston Fat stock show with her show pig. Good luck, Shannon, we know you have worked hard, as well as your family to show your pig. We are always proud of our youth when they put in a little extra effort!

Correspondence also consisted of thank-you notes from the George Pavlica family and the Albert Schiller family for memorials, a letter from District Two Secretary Sharon Holman telling us about the District Two meeting to be held at Lodge 24, Cyclone on Sunday, March 15. Also, we received a letter from President Howard Leshikar thanking Lodge 47 for hosting the mid-winter tarok tournament.

Edwin Vasicek, board secretary, read minutes of the board meetings for January 19, February 1, and February 16.

Officers Reports Edwin Vasicek gave a report of our March 7 fund raiser. Also bids are being accepted for mowing the yard.

Please remit the bid to Woodrow Marek, chairman of the board, or President Edwin Pechal by March 16, our regular board meeting. Dorothy Pechal reported about the activities in the SPJST pertaining to the various tournaments in the state and the District Two meeting at Lodge 24 on March 15. She congratulated Joe Kohut on being the first place winner in the mid-winter tarok tournament in Buckholts. Gladys Marek gave a very good financial report.

All chairpersons gave satisfactory reports.

Donna Baca, Youth Leader, reported nine members, four visitors and three adults present. She reported a Mr. and Miss SPJST parade for young people ages three to five years will be held at the District Two meeting on March 15.

A public teen dance will be held at Lodge 47 on Friday, March 20 from 7 to 11 p.m. The kitchen will be open.

No alcoholic beverages will be sold.

Donna also asked if any members would like to help finance the youth's effort for a fund raiser at the Fourth of July Celebration in Belton. They will sell hamburgers and soda water. The annual Easter egg hunt will be at the hall on Sunday, March 29 right after the meeting which starts at 2 p.m.

Another youth club member made the news: Andrew Brenek was a first place winner in UIL number sense.

We're proud of you, Andrew! He is the son of Eugene and Barbara Brenek and the grandson of Lucy and Edward Mihatsch.

New Business June 7, 1998, will be our annual picnic. More details on this next month.

Gladys Marek announced the quilt top is ready for quilting, and on Monday, March 23, we will start on the quilting at the hall at 8:30 a.m. Call Gladys if you can come. All the help we can get will be appreciated.

Birthdays celebrated in March are Elsie Jez, Joe Kohut, Woodrow Marek, Joyce Pechal, Adeline Kohutek, and Ella Pomykal. Happy Anniversary to Larry and Donna Baca.

79, Corpus Christi reports on February meeting Lodge

The regular monthly meeting on Sunday, February 15 was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Jerry Sijansky with all officers present.

"Happy Birthday" was sung for Brother Frank Sijansky, one of our long-time and faithful members whose birthday was on February 25.

Reported on the sick list was Vlasta Majek, wife of Brother John Majek.

She is doing OK. Secretary Jill Sijansky read the minutes of last meeting and they were approved as read.

For the financial report, Treasurer Milly Elzner gave a detailed list of income and expenses. She read the letter from the Supreme Lodge about the eight percent refund. Our lodge received a check for $2,535. Her report was approved.

We had three guests at our meeting.

They were Brother Bob Bayer, Clara Valla, and Lera Nemecek. Do come again!

District Seven Director Bob Bayer just happened to be in town on business so he came to our meeting. He said the SPJST has gained in assets and that we need to sell higher premium insurance to keep this up. He said there is a new plan for ages 20 to 50 coming soon. The tentative date for the District Seven Spring Meeting is scheduled for March 29 at Lodge 185, New Braunfels. He said it is very important for members to turn the fraternal activities to the lodge FAC so it can be reported by SPJST. FAC Jerry Elzner said he is working on the 1997 annual report on fraternal activities. He has been working with Sister Barbara Rosenkranz to compile the report. He has started a scrapbook for the lodge. Coming on April 19, we will have our awards dinner honoring 50-year members and other awards will be given that day. It will be a catered meal and there will be more details in my next report.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member celebrates 25th year of ordination Father Edward C. Kucera will celebrate his 25th year of ordination on April 17, 1998, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Edward Kucera Hempstead, Texas.

Father Ed is a member of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi and will receive his 50-year SPJST pin at our awards dinner on April 19, 1998.

Congratulations, Father Ed. Submitted by, Jerry Elzner Lodge 79 FAC —SPJSTCaldwell. He said we need to have a fund raiser this year. There will be more discussion at a later date as to what and when.

The monthly $50 donation for February went to Muscular Dystrophy Association, who currently have a fund drive.

Brother Jerry Elzner talked about his work about Temple becoming a sister city of Prerov in the Czech Republic.

He said it looks favorable that this will be accomplished.

A big celebration is planned for August 22, 1998, when there will be a mortgage burning ceremony because the SPJST Lodge 79 - Sokol Hall building will be fully paid out. There will be more details coming soon. It doesn't seem possible that 20 years have gone by since the hall was dedicated in August, 1978.

The next meeting will be Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m.

We thank Brother Bob Bayer for the door prizes he donated. The happy winners were Lil Hruska, Donna Havranek, Anna Marie Moss, Edna Voldan, and Lera Nemecek.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:50 p.m. and members enjoyed the social time.

Since the meeting, one of our kingtime members, Sister Anita Regmund, has suffered a stroke. We hope that she recovers soon. We miss you, Anita!

reports on February meeting Although it was the day after Valentine's, February 15 turned out to be a very sweet day. There was a lot of candy to be won. The first sweet item on the list was a box of candy donated

by Darlene and Alvin Blinka. In order to win it, you had to be the fifth person to have your name drawn out of the

names for the door prizes. That lucky person was Jerlene Anderson. The next box of candy donated by Elsie Brdecka was given to the person whose birthday was nearest to Valentine's Day. The winner was Charlie Pesak.

Next was a candy guessing game donated by Willie Mae Kuykendall.

This candy and pretty container was won by Jay Horky. Our last candy item was another guessing game donated by Adolph and Delores Macha.

This was won by Winnie Susan, but we first had to break the tie between Winnie Susan and Willie Witek. Since Winnie decided she did not need all of those calories, in the goodness of her heart, she gave the container of valentine hearts to the Horky children. With all of this candy eating going on, for Lent we can now give up candy. This will be a good sacrifice and help trim down those extra pounds.

Our second meeting of the year was held on Sunday, February 15, 1998, at the lodge hall. Thirty-four members and guests attended the meal and meeting. Guests included Barbara Rosenkranz and Louis Hanus. Barbara is the SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator and Louis, of course, is our District Five Director.

Dinner was served at 12 noon.

Before we ate, President Macha said the meal blessing. This was our pot luck meal. The nice ladies of the lodge brought a large assortment of delicious meats, vegetables, salads, and desserts.

There was a vast variety of food to choose from. Ladies, thanks for making this meal so enjoyable.

At 1 p.m., President Macha called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sister Mary Werner. The roll call of officers indicated that Vice President Vincent Newman was absent. Due to other commitments our two guests had to attend, President Macha then introduced them and let each speak. First, Barbara spoke to us. She pointed out to us the variety of activities that are going on every weekend throughout the area which are listed in the Vestnik.

Barbara stated that the SPJST has a big impact everywhere. She noted that over 500,000 hours of fraternal work has been done by SPJST members. If there is some project the lodge wants to pursue, the Supreme Lodge is there to back you up and help in many different ways.

Louis then spoke to us briefly and highlighted some of the activities going on at the Supreme Lodge. He graciously complimented our lodge for always doing well and working hard.

Thanks to Barbara and Louis for attending our dinner and meeting.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the speeches. Anytime any one of you are in our area, please pay us a visit. You are always welcome!

President Macha then continued on with the meeting. Willie Mae Kuykendall, our secretary, read the minutes of the January meeting which were met with approval. Treasurer Benita Walzel read her report which was accepted as presented. Our Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel read the bookings for the hall up until our next meeting. He then gave the report of the Special Fund which was accepted as read. Gilbert also reported that the books were audited by Shirley Bosse. Shirley's report was read and

the books were found to be in order.

There were no deaths from this lodge this past month.

New names added on the sick list include Florine Kulcak and Vlasta Stransky. It is reported that Florine had a trip by-pass and Vlasta had surgery on her leg. Others who remain on the sick list are Pearl Posteka, Helen and Harry Teykl, Edward Kuban, Jerry Blinka, Bernie Tielke, Bill Miller, and Emil Pollock. It is so good to report that Edward Kuban has been released from the hospital after being there six weeks. He is slowly improving and still needs our prayers. Also, Margaret Tydlacka, wife of member Ben Tydlacka, is at home and recovering from her by-pass surgery. Get-well wishes are sent to all who are sick.

May God bless you with a speedy recovery.

In the correspondence department, thank-you notes were read from the families of Edna Chaloupka and Freddie Kocurek for the donations to the Memorial Fund. Also, a pretty card with a thank-you note was received from Helen and Harry Teykl.

President Macha read a letter from Evelyn Mikeska inviting all of us to the District Five Spring Meeting to be held in Pasadena on March 1, 1998. Thanks for the invite, Evelyn.

Material pertaining to the 1998 Lodge Officers Workshop and 1997 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards Banquet to be held in Caldwell on February 28 was read. Some of the lodge officers are planning to attend.

Discussion was brought up about possibly having a fund raiser for our SPJST. The floor was open for suggestions. This will be discussed more in depth at the March meeting.

Lodge 81 in Needville welcomes a new member. He is Luke Joseph Dorman, grandson of Joe and Doris Gurecky of Rosenberg. Also, we are delighted to have four transferred members from Lodge 40 in El Campo.

They are Stephen, Hayden, Collin, and Tracie Hummel. We want to invite all of you to come to our dinner and meeting, so that we will be able to meet you and begin our friendship.

On Sunday, March 15, we will be honoring 17 special people. Our Age 96 honoree is Karolina Zeman of Guy. There was a slight mix-up last year about Mrs. Zeman being honored, but it has been corrected now. Our 50-year members for 1998 are Georgie E. Cerny of Bay City, Helen Marie Deiss of Rosenberg, Dorothy Ann Holecek of College Station, Emma A. Kujawa of Rosenberg, Leonard E. Law of Onalaska, Adolph Pollock of Rosenberg, Earlene Mae Pollock of Rosenberg, Rubin B. Sabrsula of Needville, Joe J. Silhavy of Sugar Land, Raymond E. Silhavy of Houston, Vlasta Marie Smerek of Guy, Harry Joe Teykl of Needville, Opal Teykl of Needville, Ben H. Tydlacka of Rosenberg, Alfred Uherek (address unknown), and Allen L. Vyvial of Rosenberg. Dinner and Meeting March 15

Our next dinner and meeting will be Sunday, March 15, 1998, at the lodge hall. On the menu will be roast beef and sausage. Benita Walzel has graciously volunteered to bake the roast.

Remember, we will honor 17 special people and their families. Therefore, ladies, we really need your help. When you are preparing your food, please add a little more in the pot. We need the usual—vegetables or salads and desserts. Your help is appreciated.

February has been a very wet month again. Some of the farmers in certain areas of the country were able to sneak into the fields and do some work.

Other fields are getting very grassy.

Cattle are also suffering. The hoofs on the cattle are beginning to rot. Also, some of the animals are dying. This all sounds bad, but let's not forget all the people in Florida and California who are going through much more difficult times. Be sure to remember them in your prayers.

On March 9, most of the students in this area will be having their spring break. Please watch out for the youngsters. Everyone can have a good time if common sense is used.

Circle March 15, our meeting date.

This will be a special day for many people. Make plans to attend. There will be people from a lot of different places, so let's give them a big Needville welcome.

88, Houston reports on member activities

We members were saddened to hear that Sister Alice Souchek, a lovely and dear friend, passed away. She was quite a busy lady most of her life, being quite active in church work and in several garden clubs in Houston and Sugar Land. She was a national judge of floral arrangements for the National Federation of Garden Clubs. In 1942, Alice was instrumental in the planting of more than 300 live oak trees along Braeburn Drive in Bellaire. She was an artist and painted china and taught china painting. We enjoyed the Soucheks so much when they usually sat at our table at the ballroom activities; how well we remember Alice's constant smile and friendly personality.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to her husband of almost 58 years, our Czech Professor William Souchek, daughter Julianne Souchek, and other relatives.

Our sympathy also goes to Mary Roznovsky on the loss of her brother, Stash Gorka of Houston, and to A.V. Roznovsky on the loss of his sister, Ann Rene11.

Social Night Chairman Willie Wehring hopes you remember bingo every Thursday evening. Early bird specials start at 7:15 p.m. and the regular games start at 7:45 p.m. Our Blue Room cocktail lounge is open Thursday and Saturday evenings with our popular bartender Nat Gonzales.

"Get-well" greetings go to Marie Rezek, who is in the hospital. Marie has been a loyal member for many years, and we hope she will be lots better by the time she reads this. We are glad to hear that Thomas Marsh is better and hope that Pat Holeman is also!

We still have good dances left in March: Tom Houston (big band) on the 14th and Vrazels (polka and variety) on the 21st. Come and enjoy both of these fine orchestras!

President Clara Broz hopes you will attend our lodge meetings always on the second Mondays of each month; the meetings are followed by refreshments. 92, Fort Worth member enjoys workshop and banquet Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Most of you that were at Lodge 186, Caldwell will remember the great time we had at the annual workshop and the awards banquet where sales representatives received different types of awards for the work they have done this past year for SPJST. Then, those of you who did not attend may want to know what took place so I will outline the highlights.

Several of us that live a long way from Caldwell had to get out of bed about 4:30 a.m. to hit the road. SPJST Lodge 186 is a very large hall, and it is beautiful inside and outside. I will have to say that all the members in District One really put on a good program.

They were all were so polite and they pleased everyone. All the hosts were so helpful if we needed some kind of assistance. This shows what fraternalism is all about. You showed all the SPJST members what a good time can be when we all get together.

This is for some of you that did not attend. The Supreme Lodge Officers and the Editor explained the purpose of the SPJST and how it is in the insurance business. As many of you know, the stock companies are trying to get rid of fraternal lodges that sell life insurance. That means that anyone who sells insurance will have to be licensed. Then, we would not have all the good people to sell insurance Our sales representatives do not make large salaries as most of them just do this for the lodge members so they will have reasonable rates. We need to support our senators and representatives so they will keep fraternal lodges and that way, we will have lower rates for life insurance and annuities.

This will be a repeat, but I will say that the young ladies in the Home Office did a splendid job at this workshop. I may be wrong, but I am sure they donated their time and if they did—our hats are off to all of you.

Also, the young lady who works in Brother Kacir's law office—this again explains what fraternalism is all about.

I thank you as do all the members. It sure was wonderful to see all the hosts working to make this a day to be remembered for a long time.

It was a pleasure to meet all my friends and also the nice lady from Lodge 18, Elgin who was wanting to meet me. Dorothy Pechal introduced

her to me. I thank her and everyone who reads my letters and enjoys the jokes. I try to make all of you smile and laugh a little.

Thanks to the Supreme Lodge Officers, the Editor and the district officers. All of you are doing a splendid job with the SPJST, and SPJST would not be what it is today if it were not for all the good sales we have in our organization. Let's always keep what our parents started for us.

Patronize your lodges in whatever type of entertainment they have.

It was nice to find that one of our Lodge 92 players won second place in the SPJST Annual Tarok Tournament.

Agnes Rezincek, congratulations to you and may you have lots of luck in the future.

The Czech class at Lodge 172, Pasadena started Tuesday, March 3.

The class is being held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lodge 172, Pasadena located at 3609 Preston in Pasadena, Texas Our teacher is Mrs. Alena Svehlik, formerly from Brno, Czech Republic.

While we are learning, we all enjoy this class very much.

Rest Home No. 1, Taylor residents enjoy valentine party S.P.J.S.T.

On Wednesday, February 25, 1998, Lodge 172, Pasadena held their regular monthly meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Robert Mayfield, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed.

Reunions Labay Family Reunion

A reunion of the Labay family will be held on Sunday, April 5, 1998, at the Nada Community Center (old KJT Hall) at Nada, Texas, with registration starting around 10:30 a.m. after the conclusion of the 9:30 a.m. Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church. A catered barbecue lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. followed by a short meeting and musical entertainment. All family members should notify their relatives to attend this special occasion.

Celebrating will be the descendants of Josef and Mariana Baros Labaj (Labay) from Hutisko-Solanec, Moravia, who immigrated to Texas in 1872. After living near Frelsburg, Texas, for approximately nine years, Joseph and Mary Labay, together with their five sons: John Labay, Michael Labay, George Labay, Joseph Labay, and Frank Labay, settled in the area now known as Nada, Texas.

Pauline Kovar, Activities Director, presented the winner with a valentineshaped box filled with candy. The second place winner received the teddy bear filled with candy. Party favors of valentine candy in bon bon cups were presented to each resident during the party on a valentine place mat.

The Taylor Brethren Church Sunday School Class made and brought each resident a valentine to enjoy.

Refreshments of Big Red ice cream floats and cookies were served to each resident by Lillian Sakewitz; Leona Stalmach, Lillian Fox, and Wayne Jacobs, FFS. The residents then enjoyed the afternoon playing games of 42 dominoes.

Birthday Parties The monthly parties are held on the last Thursday of each month after the residents finish lunch. A birthday centerpiece is placed in front of the resident at the table, plus a birthday place mat and napkin.

Resident Council Meeting The menu for February was chicken fried steak, country fried potatoes, green salad, and fresh rolls with kolaches for dessert.

The Council discussed the valentine party that would be held on February 13, 1998, at 2:30 p.m. The Council voted to have Big Red floats and sugar cookies for refreshments. The residents wanted some more chicken salad sandwiches for supper one night this month.

Mrs. Kovar (AD) asked if there were any suggestions for any new activities they would enjoy that would be added to our March activities calendar. The February activities calendar was the same as January, except for the , Valentine Party.

Family Care Plan Meetings Care plan meetings are made by appointment by the resident's family member.

Czech Heritage Society of Texas meets March 21 at Lodge 49, Rowena The Spring Meeting of the State Czech Heritage Society will be held in Rowena, Texas, at the SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena Hall on Saturday, March 21, 1998.

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas, founded in 1982, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Czech heritage. There are 14 local chapters in the CHS: Bexar County; Brazos Valley; Burleson County; Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties of the Concho Valley; Ellis County; Fayette County; Fort Bend County; Galveston County; Lavaca County; McLennan-Hill Counties; Travis-Williamson Counties; Victoria County; and Wharton County. The organization will observe its 15th anniversary.

All chapter presidents are requested to send the number of individuals who will attend so that enough food may

be provided. The cost is $6 per plate.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m.

Free coffee will be served. Kolaches will be sold for 50 cents each. They will be provided by the ladies of SPJST Lodge 49.

have some song books copied for sing-along.

Robert Janak, Chairman of the State Czech Historical Commission, has accepted our chapter history sent to him by Lamar Lopecky, historian.

Norman Blazek of Dallas, who performed here with his Czech Folk Singers last year, sent David Blazek, past vice president of our chapter, a letter thanking the Concho Valley Chapter for making their performance enjoyable at our last year's Czech Fest.

The Rowena Chapter voted to help SPJST District Four hold another Czech Fest in October, but the chapter will not sponsor it. SPJST District Four will combine the event with a tarok tournament.

ALBERT L. SCHILLER, age 66, of Lake Belton who passed away Wednesday, February 4, 1998, in a Temple hospital.

Services were at 10 a.m. Friday, February 6, 1998, at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Rev. Donald Robinson officiating.

Burial was in Little Flock Cemetery.

He was born in Westphalia to Anton J. Schiller and Mary Schiller. He lived in the Temple-Belton area all of his life and married Nelta Christie in 1971.

Survivors are his wife, Nelta Schiller of Lake Belton; a son, Clifford L. Schiller of Temple; a daughter, Sharon Rostovich of Temple; a brother, Anton Schiller, Jr. of Rogers; and a grandchild.

EMILIE (MILLIE) ZADRAPA STASNEY. Millie Stasney, 99, of Crosby, passed away Wednesday evening, January 28, 1998, in a Baytown nursing home. She was born on September 11, 1898, in Snook, Texas, to Joe and Maria Zadrapa. She and her family moved to Crosby when she was a young girl. She married Joseph Stasney in 1920. He passed away five years later in 1925.

She was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crosby.

Mrs. Stasney is preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Gordan and Odell Stasney.

She is survived by her son, Alvin Joseph Stasney and his wife Virginia of Crosby; sisters, Lillian Pechanic of Houston, Rosa Lee Franta of Baytown, and Marca Lee Gentry of Highlands; brothers, R.G. Zadrapa, and his wife Angie of Highlands, and John J. Zadrapa and his wife Gail of Crosby; grandchildren, Mark Alvin Stasney and his wife Janet of Midland, Texas, Rebecca Anne Smith and her husband Rusty of Humble, and Laura Anne Roman and her husband Joe of Humble; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Mark Stasney, Robert Joseph Stasney, Anne R. Smith, Gordan Duane Smith, Joseph David Roman, and Christina Marie Roman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m.

Saturday, January 31, 1998, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crosby with Rev. Fred O'Connor officiating. A rosary was said at 7 p.m. Friday, January 30, 1998, at the Church.

Arrangements were under the direction of Sterling-White Chapel in Highlands.

FRANKLIN VAJDAK. Funeral services for Mr. Vajdak, 64, of Cypress, Texas, were held Saturday, February 14, 1998; at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Waltrip Funeral Directors in Houston, with Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Members of Masonic Lodge 1151 Cade Rothell also officiated.

Interment was in Woodlawn Garden of Memories in Houston.

Mr. Vajdak died Wednesday, February 11, 1998, at his residence.

He was born May 19, 1933, the son of the late Tom and Mary Vajdak. He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1952.

He was employed by WymanGordon, formerly Cameron Iron Works for 45 years.

Mr. Vajdek served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his wife of 22 years, Shirley, and his parents, Tom and Milady Vajdak.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Vajdak and Allen Vajdak and wife Angie; sisters Alice Piwonka and husband Alex and Mary Owens and husband George of Caldwell; four grandchildren, Melissa, Amanda, Ashley and Austin Vajdak.

Serving as pallbearers were Bob Piwonka, Nickolas Piwonka, David Hayes, Darrell Hayes, Kenny Iselt, and Clarence Iselt.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Elizabeth Wagner, our State Queen, and Elizabeth Vahalik, our State Duchess, talked to us briefly about the Christmas parade in Temple and how much they enjoyed it. Their next appearance is in May, 1998.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club reports on recent activities Dear Members, The Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club met on Sunday, November 9, 1997, for their monthly meeting. We discussed our Christmas party along with Christmas caroling.

We wrote letters to James Svetlik who is with the Army. We made some Christmas ornaments for our family.

December Meeting

We met for our December meeting on December 14, 1997. We discussed the upcoming tee-shirt contest. We made a contribution to the Adopt-AnAngel program at Wal-Mart for the needy children to be given toys, clothes, etc. for Christmas. We went Christmas caroling at the nursing home before the meeting. We played the white elephant game for Christmas.

All of us colored a Christmas tree for our coloring contest. That was fun!

The winners were John Richardson (first place), Josh Siptak (second place), and Trevor Scott (third place).

Judges were picked from our adult lodge. And last, but not least, we all got to tell Santa what we wanted for Christmas.

CZECH HERITAGE AND CULTURE

CD brings Czech language and history to home computers New

By Rev. Mark Labaj Czech language study is now available for self-guided learning on computer. Multimedia offers the advantage of giving video and audio presentations of the language and the Rev. Mark Labaj opportunity to respond through the keyboard. The program I reviewed is entitled WinCzEduc.

Vestnik editor Brian Vanicek asked me to review this new program for the benefit of his readers and I was glad to take on this task.

The emphasis of this program differs from many Czech language books that I have examined. Many popular approaches to the language start immediately with conversation. WinCzEduc uses lessons based on Czech history to teach the formal grammar of the language right from the start. The program is divided into 18 lessons, starting with the earliest Czech history and moving to events of 1993.

The first nine lessons take the student through 1800. I was particularly interested in the three lessons that covered the ancient Hussite era. Those who wish to travel or engage in business in the Czech Republic will find this historical approach to be helpful in understanding the culture and values of the Czech people, as well as the language itself.

The minimum requirements for this program are a 486 processor operating at a minimum of 33 Mhz, 8 MB of RAM, and 8 MB free on hard drive. The sound files for the audio are listed at 350 MB, so if you are pressed for disk space, you will need to remove sound files as you progress to new lessons. Video needs to he at least VGA 800 x 600, and you'll need a Windows-compatible sound card.

You will also need a CD-ROM drive.

The software is listed as running with Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.

I tested the program with a Pentium 166 with 32 MB of RAM, SVGA video, and a SoundBlaster sound card, running Windows 95. Because I didn't have a lot of free space on the hard drive, I loaded the sound file for the current lesson and then removed it before taking on the next lesson.

Installation was uneventful and straightforward. I didn't have Czech fonts and keyboard installed, but it took only a few minutes to download Czech fonts from the CD-ROM through the Windows 95 Control Panel and the Czech keyboard through the Windows 95

Add/Delete Programs in the Control Panel. If you don't use Czech fonts, the program output looks like something Scandinavian with some odd characters in the text! The program has a special screen that displays the characters of the Czech keyboard and allows one to print it for reference.

When in the program, the pulldown menus get you into the various features.

Action will exit the program, there are Czech and English grammar menus, there is the lesson menu, and a control menu for activating various options. The HELP button on the main page explains the basic operation of the program.

Each lesson starts with Czech text.

Buttons at the bottom of the screen activate a screen of English translation, the text read aloud in Czech, a map related to the text, and exercises to interact with the lesson. The grammar button allows quick reference at any time to rules of the language. Double-clicking on a Czech word in the text reveals its English translation.

In evaluating the program, I didn't encounter any bugs or crashes.

WinCzEduc is an important addition to Czech language instruction methods. For the person who is unable to interact with a Czech speaker or teacher in a classroom setting, it enables direct contact with the language for more effective learning.
