Saturday's workshop and in our upcoming spring meetings: 1. Information and explanation of the previous year's financial and fraternal performance on a statewide and district level; 2. Information on management's business objectives and insights into the members roles in supporting these objectives; and 3. Information on existing and evolving SPJST insurance, mortgage lending and fraternal programs and services.

Who, specifically, is responsible for relaying this information is of secondary importance. The main thing is that real issues are addressed and that members get the opportunity to ask questions about any items that they do not understand.

Saturday's workshop and our upcoming spring meetings will provide us with great opportunities for meaningful discussion. So many basic topics are often overlooked because we assume that everyone knows the answers or agrees on them. For example: • Why does the SPJST exist?

• What are its strengths?

• What are its weaknesses?

• What opportunities does it face?

• Where does the Society want to go?

• How do we plan to get there?

Let's talk about these kinds of things.

The SPJST is a good organization; still, its lodges have an ever-changing set of business and fraternal issues, legal requirements, and challenges with which to contend. The very existence of our Society relates to the ability of our membership to communicate, to understand and to deal with these topics.

News You Can Use Two big meetings this weekend: First, this Saturday, February 28, lodge officers and sales representatives from all over the state will meet at Lodge 186, Caldwell for the 1998 Lodge Officers Workshop and 1997 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards Banquet. The agenda for these events appears below. Then, on Sunday, March 1, members of District Five will meet at Lodge 172, Pasadena for the SPJST's first district spring meeting of the year. Details appear on page 10.

Additional district spring meeting dates are posted on page 9.

The SPJST's annual Lodge Officers Workshop was conceived as a way to educate local lodge officers on matters relevant to their respective positions and managing their local lodges.

Spring meetings, on the other hand, were initiated as a way to provide the membership with an overview of the Society's performance during the previous year and to define the Society's course of direction for the coming year. In both cases, the objectives are closely related - to provide attendees with "news they can use."

Participating in the Lodge Officers Workshop and our district meetings ties in with one of the three basic tenets of our Society - that of "Brotherhood."

Where there is brotherhood, there is cooperation; and where there is cooperation, there is the potential for achieving dynamic results Effective meetings on the statewide and district levels can help to define a sense of purpose and direction for our local lodges.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to issue the following Resolution of Respect for Nick A. Morris. The motion carried unanimously.

RESOLUTION OF RESPECT WHEREAS, the Supreme Lodge and the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) membership was saddened to learn of the death of Nicodemus Alois Morris, past President and Editor of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST); and, WHEREAS, Brother Morris left surviving him to mourn his departure, his daughter, Katherine E. Smith; his sons, Nicholas K. Morris, Stephen P. Morris, Josef N. Morris, and Michael M. Morris; his brothers, John Morris, Raymond Morris, and Aldrey Morris; eleven grandchildren; and a host of relatives, friends and, neighbors, all of whom, with all the members of the Supreme Lodge of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) desire to record their sorrow at the death on December 27, 1997, of Brother Morris who worked harmoniously and diligently for the good of the Society for many years and was appointed as Editor of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas in 1962 and elected as Editor at the 1964 Convention in Waco and elected as President of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) at the 1968 SPJST Convention and served in that capacity until 1984, and WHEREAS, all members of the Supreme Lodge of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) bear willing testimony that Brother Morris contributed much to the growth and progress of the Society as President and Editor of the Society and that he was a good man who will be missed and remembered by his many friends mourning his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be tendered to the family as an expression of heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement; one copy be sent to the Vestnik for publication; and one copy be spread on the minutes of the Supreme Lodge of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST).

FOR THE SUPREME LODGE OF THE SLAVONIC BENEVOLENT ORDER OF THE STATE OF TEXAS (SPJST) Howard B. Leshikar, President Lanita Anglin, Secretary-Treasurer There was a discussion about the Supreme Lodge establishing an endowment scholarship in Nick A. Morris' name. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Vavra, that each year one of the existing scholarships will be given in honor of Nick A. Morris. This scholarship will be funded from the funds that SPJST donates to the scholarship fund. The motion carried unanimously. It was pointed out, if an individual or a district wants to establish an endowed scholarship honoring Nick A. Morris following the Society's regulations, it will be acceptable.

Chairman Vanek turned the chair over to President Leshikar for the election of Chairman of the Board and Vice Chairman of the Board. Director Broz nominated Director Vanek to be the Chairman of the Board. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Director Krizan, to elect Director Vanek as Chairman of the Board by acclamation. The motion carried unanimously.

Chairman Vanek welcomed Editor Vanicek to the Supreme Lodge meeting.

MINUTES - The minutes were reviewed page by page. On page 185, the last two sentences should read "It was pointed out that in November 1996, $500.00 was approved for the State Lock-In and that additional expenses could he taken from the

District Youth Fund or from the District Youth Allocation Fund. The tistrict Youth Allocation Fund can be used for camps or any other positive youth activities."

Motion by Director Broz, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to accept the minutes with the corrections. The motion carried unanimously.

Chairman Vanek inquired as to the status of the chart on dormant lodges kept by the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator since it was not in the Board Room. He stated that this chart be updated and made available at the next Supreme Lodge meeting.

Thank you for the opportunity to have worked for the SPJST. I have learned a great deal and am fortunate to have been an employee at such a successful Society.

Sincerely, Helen M. Hegwood, FIC State Field Representative Vice President Mikeska reported he had received a letter from some sales representatives in District V and that he would respond to the letter.

Chairman Vanek made the following audit assignments: Bank: Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, President Leshikar, Director Klinkovsky and Legal Advisor Kacir.

The selection of a new state field representative for District V will be made by Vice President Mikeska with consultation of President Leshikar and Director Hanus.

Recess was taken from 9:35 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. to allow time for the audit.

Director Klinkovsky reported that all the stocks and bonds were accounted for at the bank, custody account, and brokerage firm.

AUTOMOBILES - A copy of the mileage log from one of the field representatives was presented. The directors preferred this mileage log and requested that all the logs be uniform. Each log needs to stay with the car and also have a column for the initials of who drove the vehicle. It would he helpful if the logs had a column indicating the purpose of the trip and when a car is driven home by an officer. The directors questioned Financial Secretary Mikulas as to whether or not W-2s were given to the officers and employees who drove company cars. Financial Secretary Mikulas replied that W-2s were given to the officers.

VOUCHERS - Director Bayer and Director Vavra reported that there still seems to he an excessive amount of directory assistance calls. They further expressed that the names of the participants for business meals should he on the receipt. It was stated that any flowers paid for by the Society should be from the Society on the enclosure card and not from one individual. It was reported that one employee was collecting mileage to come to the Home Office to pick up a Society vehicle. The decision of the Supreme Lodge was an employee cannot he paid mileage to come to the home office to get a company vehicle.

FRATERNALIST OF THE YEAR - The Supreme Lodge reviewed all the applicants for Fraternalist of the Year and selected Willie E. Kohutek from Lodge 47 Seaton. The honorable mentions are: Laverne Cabla, Lodge 24, Cyclone; Lydia Dobecka, Lodge 6, Cottonwood; Joe Nezval, Lodge 28, East Bernard; and Joe Siptak, Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

STATE FIELD REPRESENTATIVE - Vice President Mikeska read a letter dated January 13, 1998, from some of the District V sales representatives concerning the resignation of State Field Representative Helen Hegwood. Vice President Mikeska reported that State Field Representative Hegwood had informed him on January 7, 1998, that she would he retiring and he received the letter of resignation on January 8, 1997. Vice President Mikeska read the following letter from State Field Representative Hegwood: January 7, 1998 Leonard Mikeska, FIC Vice-President Supreme Lodge SPJST P. 0. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503 Dear Mr. Mikeska: I wish to inform you of my retirement from the State Field Representative (SFR) position effective March 1, 1998.

I would like to personally thank all of the people that had the foresight in creating the positions of SFR because I feel that it is a great benefit to the insurance agents and ultimately to the members. As such, SPJST has truly benefited from the direct approach of the SFRs and the improved technical knowledge of each participating insurance agent.

My position held with the SPJST has been the most rewarding of my career and has been a very positive experience. I have an admirable respect for you and the Society. I hope that this situation does not effect any professional relationships as I wish to continue being an active insurance agent.

I would also like to thank Gene McBride, my fellow SFRs, and the department for being supportive in the endeavors to educate and update the agents and members on the changes that the insurance programs have seen through the past years.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz's report was reviewed. She has set goals of 50 percent participation in any fraternal programs that are implemented.

It was suggested to have the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator train the local and district fraternal activities coordinators at the same time sales representative training classes are being conducted.

President Leshikar is in charge of the Local Lodge Officers Workshop and Incentive Awards Banquet this year. It was decided that the Workshop will be from 9:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. With the Awards Banquet beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Mr. Joe Godwin from Independent Order of Foresters will be the speaker at the Workshop. There will be no outside speaker at the banquet. President Leshikar and Vice President Mikeska will try to design a strategy for the picture taking to he completed in less time.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR - State Youth Director Lange's report was reviewed. There was a lengthy discussion on a petition from the Youth Department requesting additional funds for a State Lock-In. The Supreme Lodge confirmed that $500 had been approved by the Supreme Lodge. The Special Committee appointed during the October Supreme Lodge meeting will meet with the District Youth Counselors on February 7, 1998. It was stated that all employees should abide by the decisions of the Supreme Lodge.

EDITOR'S REPORT - Editor Vanicek presented his quarterly report and recommendations. He also reported the dance class in District II had a total of 14 students from five different local lodges. Editor Vanicek was congratulated on the great job that he had done in establishing a dance class in District II. Editor Vanicek presented information about prospective SPJST statewide charities and about SPJST possibly underwriting the production of a compact disc or cassette of music by Richard Urhis, Professor of Music at University of Texas at Brownsville. This music would feature popular works by Czech composers and some of Mr. Urhis' original compositions. He recommended that the proceeds from this endeavor go towards a statewide charity or charities selected by the Supreme Lodge. No donations will be made to the charity until after all expenses are covered. This can possibly be an opportunity for local lodges or youth clubs to sell the compact disc or cassette tapes and keep part of the proceeds for their use.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, AND MUSEUM - There has been a total of 316 visitors to the museum from October 2, 1997, through January 2, 1998.

SCHOLARSHIPS - There were 266 requests for scholarship applications for the 1997-1998 school year. At the end of 1997, a total of $9,163.66 had been contributed to the 100 Pennies Drive.

NFCA - An article was read from the NFCA which indicated that the 1998 IRS audit list may include fraternal benefit societies, their local lodges and other non-profit organizations.

SALES - According to Vice President Mikeska, there were a total of 1,341 applications submitted to SPJST for $43,408,540.00 which resulted in $30,529,040.00 of insurance issued. This was 3.95 percent less than in 1996. For the 1997 quotas set by the Insurance Department, District VI and District II met their quotas. The amount Of earned premium was down $328,039.21 as compared to 1996. This figure does not include 1035 exchanges. Part of the reason for this is because the amount of deposits in the annuities was less.

This past year, the concentration of the Insurance Department has been on training, such as more new sales representatives and the FIC classes.

NEW PRODUCTS - Vice President Mikeska presented requests from sales representatives for dividend paying whole life and a whole life term certificate. Currently, our best selling products are the term certificate with the Universal Life being the only product that can compete with the Variable Universal Life. The Universal Life certificate is a sophisticated product and needs to be looked at during different periods of the insured's life.

NEW L DGES - Vice President Mikeska reported on eight lodges currently in process of being organized. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to grant a time extension until April 30, 1998, on those lodges that have an expiration date before April 30, 1998.

ILLUSTRATION S•FTWARE - Vice President Mikeska reported the illustration/operation manual was completed and the illustration software has been delivered to 53 sales representatives. He acknowledged his assistant, Kathy Fritz, on writing and testing the manual.

STATE FIEL ANAGE - State Field Manager McBride's report was reviewed.

The primary concentration of the state field representatives is to recruit new sales representatives and training of allOf the sales representatives.

Director Klinkovsky, to purchase two replacement automobiles with the lowest bid being for the 1998 Chevrolet Luminas. The officers are to dispose of the worn out autos as soon as possible. The motion carried unanimously. The maintenance of the Society's automobiles is assigned to the following officers.

President - automobile assigned to the President and the van.

Vice President - automobile assigned to the Vice President and all vehicles assigned to state field representatives and the State Field Manager.

Secretary-Treasurer - automobile assigned to the Secretary-Treasurer and automobile assigned to the home office.

Financial Secretary : automobile assigned to the Financial Secretary.

CLUB - Vice President Mikeska reported that ERS CENTENNIAL ME there are 375 new members in the Centennial Membership Drive; but, more should be added when the applications written before December 31, 1997, are processed.

Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Director Krizan, to continue the Centennial Club and the offering of the five gold dollars for each recommended member through December 31, 1998.. The motion carried unanimously.

NEW PRO UCTS - Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to offer the Roth IRA as a new product and also to use Universal Pensions as a consulting service for technical language for Opening documents and to purchase brochures explaining traditional IRAs and the Roth IRA. The motion carried unanimously.

ME OFFICE - Vice President Mikeska reported on the cost and several options available to move the underwriter to a more private work area. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to give the officers the authority to see what options are available for space at the home office and to also come up with the best price for furniture. The motion carried unanimously.

SALES CONTEST - Vice President Mikeska reported on the winners of the "Christmas Cash" contest. Some of the winners are taking the option of using the cash towards a computer.

The new sales contest "Bound for Bossier" was presented. The top 20 sales representatives based on earned premium from January 1 through April 30, 1998, will win a three day, two night trip to Bossier City, Louisiana. The employees who are sales representatives will not he competing against the other sales representatives.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded b y Vice President Mikeska, that the SPJST fleet of cars would remain stable and the purchase of the two 1998 Chevrolet Luminas would not increase the number of automobiles SPJST owns. The motion carried unanimously.

LODGE COM LANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that 60 local lodges have not submitted their 1998 officers report. A follow-up request will be mailed about February 1, 1998.

Copies of the 1996 /RS 990/990T forms have not been received from Lodge 24, Cyclone, Lodge 149, Alvin, and Lodge 188; Centerville.

N IL POLLS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that the vote on the mail poll for authorization to organize Lodge 210, Fairfield and Lodge 211, Palestine were-10 votes in favor. Ballots were not received from President Leshikar and Director Hanus.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that the votes on the mail poll to purchase two new automobiles as replacement vehicles were: President Leshikar, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan and Director Broz voted to postpone action; Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Director Bayer and Chairman Vanek voted to purchase two Ford Crown Victorias; Financial Secretary Mikulas voted to purchase two Chevrolet Luminas; and ballots were not received from Vice President Mikeska.

VESTNIK - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that on December 31, .1997, the Ve.Smik subscription list amounted to 9,868 which is an increase of 134. The present

printing cost amounts to $1,000.00 per week and $1,785.00 per week in postage cost.

The postage cost for 1998 should amount to approximately $90,000.00

The Supreme Lodge members reviewed the state field representatives compensation from January 1, 1997, through December 31, 1997.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to amend the 1997 Incentive bonus and to authorize bonus incentives beginning January 1, 1998, of $250.00 each to the applicable state field representative and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, if instrumental, for converting a lodge from quarterly to monthly meetings. Lodges applicable will be determined by President Leshikar and Vice President Mikeska after consultation with the applicable director of that district.

Bonuses will be paid at the end of the first year of monthly meetings and when a lodge qualifies for an Incentive Award within two years. This incentive applies to lodges which were approached after January 1, 1998 for the first time about changing meeting times from quarterly to monthly. The motion carried unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to authorize $250.00 to State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, if the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator is instrumental, when a monthly local lodge is moved from dormant to active status, with the Incentive being paid when the lodge qualifies for an Incentive Award within two years and the decision being made by President Leshikar and Vice President Mikeska. The motion carried unanimously.

Director Vavra moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to continue to award $20.00 per child to the local youth leader and $5.00 per child to the State Youth Director when a new youth club is organized. The youth club has to be new and not in existence for two years. The children must attend at least seven meetings during the first year to qualify the State Youth Director and local youth leader for the bonus. The motion carried unanimously.

Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to ratify the state field representatives compensation and other incentives with changes as presented

by Vice President Mikeska. The effective date of these compensations and incentives is January 1, 1998, through December 31, 1998. The motion carried unanimously.

AUTOMOBILES - The mail poll of November 10, 1997, called for postponement of any decision concerning the replacement of the two Society's automobiles until the January meeting. Vice President Mikeska reported the Chevrolet Caprice assigned to a state field representative and the Chevrolet Lumina assigned to the home office need to be replaced. He submitted bids from four companies on 1998 Chevrolet Luminas; three companies on 1997 Ford Crown Victorias and four companies for 1998 Ford Crown Victorias. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by

SPJST CALENDAR - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the SPJST Calendars were mailed to 26,600 households, at a postage cost of $3,157.14. The postage cost was down because we were able to print the bar code on each address.

BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas compared the actual income and expenses to the budget amount for 1997. The total income for 1997 was $17,082,370.00 which was 4 percent over the budgeted amount. The total expenses for 1997 was $12,211,885.44 which was 18 percent over the budgeted amount.

LODGE REFUNDS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that Lodge 18, Elgin; Lodge 25, Ennis; Lodge 35, Elk; Lodge 47, Seaton; and Lodge 29, Taylor requested that a portion of their 1998 refund be paid in advance.

John Sharp, Comptroller of Public Accounts, State of Texas, was welcomed to the meeting by Chairman Vanek. Comptroller Sharp stopped by to visit since he was in the Temple area.

TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the cost of the Texas Department of Insurance's audit was $33,610.85. A tentative report was issued which shows no discrepancies of any magnitude. The final report should be received in a few months.

Director Hanus reported on the audit of the books. He reported everything was in order. The income was up in 1997 by 1 percent and the expenses were up.

LITIGATION/BANKRUPTCIES/FORECLOSURES - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on mortgages and certificates in process of bankruptcy and the mortgages in process of foreclosure and possible litigation.

EASEMENTS - There was a discussion about the width needed for easements when property does not adjoin a public road. Legal Advisor Kacir 'moved, seconded by Director Vavra, that the easement to property must be at least 40 feet wide except for the refinancing of loans currently financed by SPJST. The motion carried unanimously.

DISTRICT I - Director Vavra expressed his appreciation to Financial Secretary Mikulas for attending District I Fall meeting. He reported that Lodge 141, Sealy is now meeting monthly. The lodge has one sales representative and is currently trying

6/V ESTNIK-Wednesday, February 25, 1998 to locate more members interested in becoming sales representatives. Director Vavra reported that he has met with the officers-of Lodge 169, Brenham. He further reported that he, State Field Manager McBride and State Field Representative Gatewood attended Lodge 169, Brenham's Christmas party. He announced that Lodge 106, La Grange has requested to begin monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month beginning January 1998.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky reported he had attended Texas Fraternal Congress, installed officers at Lodge 47, Seaton, the FIC classes at the Home Office, and the Tarok Tournament at Granger. He reported that Lodge 174, Rockdale and Lodge 155, Austin do not advertise the dates of their meeting and he felt it would be beneficial to their membership if they did.

During a discussion about the target lodges, it was pointed out not to send State Field Manager, state field representatives, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, and the State Youth Director to Christmas parties and socials as part of their official duties; instead, have them work one-on-one with officers and sales representatives. If the field people are invited to attend a lodge function the Supreme Lodge has no problem with them attending; however, it is not a requirement of the Supreme Lodge and a social is not part of the job. It was pointed out the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator has only been to District VII once in 1997 and District IV twice in 1997. The directors requested a written log of the officers, State Field Manager, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, State Field Representatives, State Youth Director and Editor showing when they are working outside of the office and when they are not at the home office between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Chairman Vanek expressed his appreciation to Vice President Mikeska and Dorothy for having the Supreme Lodge to their home the previous evening.

In further defining the job description of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, the Supreme Lodge informed the President that: 1. The Supreme Lodge expects the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator to train every district fraternal activities coordinator and local lodge fraternal activities coordinator throughout the state either individually or in groups and let each director know when the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator will be in their district.

2. The State Fraternal Activities Coordinator is expected to he in the Home Office from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. when not on the road.

It was mentioned that Lodge 6, Cottonwood has finished with their restoration project. Director . Krizan request information on the possibility of a new term life product. He expressed a need for an answering machine capable of receiving messages when the office is closed and for the LAM To acknowledge all donations.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz thanked State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz for attending Lodge 160, San Angelo meeting and the Czech Fest in Rowena. He announced that Lodge 157, Lubbock has a new sales representative.

He further announced that Lodge 76, Wichita Falls has a new sales representative and he has met with the officers. Director Broz reported on his trip to Washington, DC, to a meeting at the Czech Embassy.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus reported that Lodge 65, Crosby may need another sales representative. He and President Leshikar are scheduled to meet with the Lodge 196, Houston officers.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer reported on attending a meeting with the officers of Lodge 164, Rio Hondo who are receptive to the idea of another sales representative. He installed the officers of Lodge 202, Jourdanton; Lodge 31, Yoakum; Lodge 107, Floresville; Lodge 185, New Braunfels; and Lodge 161, Jourdanton.

DISTRICT VI - Chairman Vanek read a letter from the President of Lodge 6, Cottonwood requesting a past due payment for their restoration. President Leshikar was reminded that this payment was approved in our previous meeting and needs to be taken care of.

He reported he had installed officers at Lodge 23, Moravia, Lodge 40, El Camp/Hillje, and Lodge 4, Halletsville; attended a social at Lodge 32, Victoria; and attended a meeting and social at Lodge 97, Placedo. He further reported that Lodge 184, Moulton is trying to get another sales representative; Lodge 151, Wharton has a new sales representative; and Lodge 8, Weimar has a new sales representative and is slowly beginning to grow. He announced that Lodge 41, Port Lavaca has been visited by Director Vanek, President Leshikar, State Field Manager McBride and State Field Representative , Weist.

NEW BUSINESS President Leshikar presented the recommendations from the By-Law Committee at the last Convention that each director is to visit every lodge at least twice during their term of office, that the retirement system needed to be reviewed and investigate the possibility of 30-year mortgage loans. Chairman Vanek responded that each director will be responsible to make their own responses at the next Convention.

3. All SPJST equipment is to be located in the Home Office when it is not being used in the field because the party holding this position is expected to work out of the Home Office when not in the field.

4. When not in the Home Office, the President's Office needs to know how the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator can be located.

75 YEAR PINS - President Leshikar presented three designs for 75 year pins. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to use the same design as the 50 year pins but indicate 75 years on it. The motion carried unanimously.

The State Field Manager, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, and State Youth Director are considered supervisory positions and should be judged more on production and the officer in charge having the authority to give the person time off. (A copy of the employee's handbook changes are placed in the exhibits.)

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to accept the changes to the employees handbook effective January 15, 1998. The motion carried unanimously.

Chairman Vanek stressed that if any officer is not in the office at least one other officer should be told and the President should at least tell the Vice President when the President is out of the office. He stated that complaints have been received regarding the President's attendance at the Home Office. Other directors stated that they received the same complaints. President Leshikar responded his department and the receptionist always knew when he was out of the office and where he was.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan inquired as to whether or not there is a time clock at the home office and whether or not the Society has ever had a time clock.

Financial Secretary Mikulas explained that whenever an employee is out of the office an absence slip is to be turned in. These slips apply to those working from 8:Q0 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to have a time clock installed in the home office. Voting in favor were: Director Vavra, Director Hanus, and Director Krizan. Voting against were: President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. The motion failed. Director Krizan requested a summary of the baseness for 1997 showing the amount of time each employee was not in the Home Office and this report be mailed with the officers report.

Pam Hendricks from Temple Sister Cities was welcomed to the meeting.

LODGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM - There was a discussion about possible changes to the Lodge Incentive Program. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Hanus, for the Incentive Program for 1998 to be the same as the 1997 Incentive Program including the changes of modified whole life not counting towards certificates issued and the platinum award meeting 11 fraternal categories out of a total of 15 different categories. The motion carried unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by President Leshikar, for the officers to report at the April Supreme Lodge meeting for an Incentive Award for the local lodge officers. The motion carried unanimously.

TEXAS LEGISLATURE - Vice President Mikeska reported on the January 7, 1998, meeting with George Leonard's Training School. Texas is the only state which allows fraternal sales representatives to sell insurance without a license. The 1999 Texas Legislature will probably require licensing of all sales representatives. By common consent of the Supreme Lodge, it was decided: 1. To do whatever we can to keep the sales representatives from having to be licensed 2. If impossible to prevent licensing, do everything possible to have a liberal grandfather clause for the existing sales representatives 3. Check into getting some of the sales representatives licensed if they want to become licensed CONFLICT OF INTEREST - The Supreme Lodge took up the matter of stating conflict of interest, if any. The Society's procedure for reporting conflict of interest involves the signing of a statement after reviewing the adopted resolution. Each Supreme Lodge member was given the opportunity to report conflict of interest and return the signed statement. All of the Supreme Lodge members signed the Conflict of Interest Resolution with no conflict of interest reported.

RESOLUTION Director Krizan reported that Lodge 5, Tioga, one of his targeted lodges has another sales representative, a new youth club, and will qualify for the platinum award in 1997. This lodge has started a building fund. He further reported that Lodge 54, West is an active lodge that meets quarterly and they do not have a youth club. The lodge expressed an interest in starting a youth club if a youth leader can be found.

The attendance is approximately 15 to 20 members at each meeting.

Wednesday, February 25, 1998—VESTNIK/7 the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), held at its regular place of meeting at Temple, Texas, on the 14th day of January, 1998, at which meeting a quorum was present and voting, the following Resolution was adopted: RESOLVED: That the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), a Fraternal Life Insurance Society (1) believes that the insurance business is affected with a public interest and is dependent upon public confidence, and (2) expects employees, officers and directors to conduct their personal financial interests and affairs so as to avoid placing such interests in conflict, direct or indirect, with those of the Company and to avoid conduct which might impair their judgment with respect to the business of the Society.

The following are regarded as illustrative of the principal situations where such conflict may be involved: 1. Financial Interest Employees, officers, directors or members of their families having a materialinterest in any corporation or incorporated enterprise which sells goods or services to, buys from, competes with the Society in the sale of insurance, or borrows from the Company and who are in a position to influence any decision by the Society with respect to such transactions.

2. Inside Information Employees, officers, or directors directly or indirectly using or divulging inside confidential information with respect to the Society for the purpose of securing personal profit or advantage for themselves or others or in a manner prejudicial to the interest of the Society.

ANNUITIES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Krizan, for Annuity I interest rate to stay at 5 1/4 percent; Annuity II and Immediate Annuity interest rate stay at 6 1/4 percent and the Roth Annuity rate to be 6 1/4 percent through April 30, 1998. The motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on the Secretaries Section of the NFCA which will be held March 26;27, and 28 and that she is planning on attending.

REFUND TO LODGES - Financial Secretary Mikulas moved for the refund to local lodges be computed at a rate of $1.00 per paid up certificate and $8.50 per premium paying certificate excluding annuities. The lodges not receiving their refund would be 8, 32, 41, 57, 82, 85, 89, 90, 114, 149, 151, 156, 167, 171, 181, 188, and 195. The motion was seconded by Director Klinkovsky. The motion carried unanimously.

GAIN IN ASSETS - Financial Mikulas reported that the Board of Directors' annual report shows a gain in assets of $4,870,484.56. Below is an itemized listing of the gain in assets for the past 10 years. Our total assets are in excess of 122 million dollars. 3. Gratuities and Entertainment The receipts of loans, gifts, gratuities, entertainment and favors of more than nominal value by employees, officers, directors or members of their families, either directly or indirectly, that may influence any decision with respect to the Society.

While the above are illustrative of ways in which conflict may arise, the entire subject is so far-reaching and the interrelationships possible within the insurance business so complex that the avoidance of conflict rest basically upon each individual's ethical standards, integrity and judgment. Annually, on or about the time of the January Board meeting, a request will be made of all directors, officers and responsible employees to state in writing any activities which conflict with the policy. The statement will be as stated on the attached Exhibit "A".

However, if any officer, director, or responsible employee at any time believes he may be engaged in activities described, he should immediately report such activities to the President.

DELINQUENCIES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that 21 loans are past due 90 or more days and made recommendations concerning each loan. There are eight loans on a work-out plan and nine loans are in bankruptcy/foreclosure. SecretaryTreasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to accept the recommendations on the delinquent loans. The motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin recommended a loss reserve of $16,000 be set for the past due mortgage loans. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, to accept the loss reserve. The motion carried unanimously.

HOME EQUITY LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented information on the regulations concerning making home equity loans in Texas. The total closing costs for an equity loan cannot be more that 3 percent of the total amount borrowed. The loan may not be secured . by agricultural homestead properties unless property is used in milk production. The equity loan can not close before 12 days after submitting application. Equity loans can only be made by individuals on lending institutions listed in the law. Before SPJST can provide equity loans, an application must he submitted and approved by the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioners. By common consent, it was decided for the officers to bring back recommendations for changes to the mortgage loan department to help the Society compete with the equity loans. It was suggested to investigate the lowering of application fees; providing 30 year mortgage loans; giving more emphasis to commercial loans and possibly financing apartments or four-plex housing. Director Vavra reminded the Supreme Lodge members that the 25 percent down payment requirement is a statue of the Texas State Legislature.

INVESTMENTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Broz, to ratify the investments from October 1, 1997, through December 31, 1997. The motion carried unanimously.

UNIVERSAL LIFE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented information on the invcstments allocated to match the Universal Life product and moved to lower the mte on Universal Life to 6.75 percent. Motion seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Voting in favor were: Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Klinkovsky, and Director Vavra. Voting against were: President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. The motion failed.

PAID UP ADDITIONS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that in 1997 paid-up additions program permitted the members to purchase $889,840.00 of permanent life insurance. Percentage wise, approximately 70 percent have taken paid-up additions.

The total cash remitted on premium refund checks amounted to $1,987,890.00 in 1997.

1998 BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas went over the 1998 budget line by line. If all the budgeted amounts are met there should once again he an increase in the Society's assets.

PREMIUM REFUND TO MEMBERS - Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Broz, for the 1998 premium refund be the same as the 1997 premium refund at a rate of 3 percent. The refund checks must amount to $2.25; otherwise, no check will be issued and an expense charge was deducted from the excess interest component of $.35 premium paying and $1.60 for paid-up. The motion carried unanimously.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported Henry L. S. Jezek, CPA has started the audit for 1997. This audit should be completed by June 30, 1998, at a cost of $11,500.00.

INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that as of December 31, 1997, two lodges had met the number of new members to meet the platinum award and 14 lodges had met the gold award. The total of the amount to be awarded to the lodges is $35,548.00 as of December 31, 1997.

ANNUITIES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported there are 1,420 annuities in the Annuity I program with a value of $22,036, 803.16. There are 1,118 annuities in the Annuity II program with a value of $22,184,897.49.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported he would be attending the Secretary Section of the NFCA on March 26, 27, and 28, 1998.

CALENDAR - There was a lengthy discussion about the 1998 SPJST Calendar.

The calendar should have the same basic content as in the past. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, for the calendar to be done in house with the President being in charge and the Editor being responsible for doing the work. The motion passed unanimously.

8/ViSTNIK-Wednesday, February 25, 1998 CHARITIES - Legal Advisor Kacir presented Editor Vanicek's recommendation to consider having Mr. Richard Urbis record works by Czech composers and some original compositions. This music could be recorded on either a compact disc or tape cassettes and sold through the Vestnik or by local lodges or by youth clubs with these lodges and youth clubs entitled to some of the proceeds. These funds would be divided equally among the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange; the Czech Cultural and Community Center in Houston; the CEFT; and the Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for children near Temple. The expenses incurred by the SPJST would have to be met before funds could be distributed to the charities. President Leshikar moved, seconded by SecretaryTreasurer Anglin, to accept the recommendation. The motion carried unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir reported on his plans to attend the Association of National Benefit Counselors.

DISTRICT I - Director Vavra selected Lodge 106, La Grange as his targeted lodge for 1998 and he stated that he would continue working with the two lodges he had selected for 1997. He thanked Dorothy and Vice President Mikeska for the previous evening of fellowship for the Supreme Lodge at their home. He also requested a listing of all the local lodge officers and to see about having an answering machine to take messages when the office is closed. He also requested all the expenses for those attending the NFCA and TFC. He expressed a need for the underwriter to be located in another area.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky selected Lodge 89, Rosebud as his targeted lodge for 1998 and he would continue to work with Lodge 174, Rockdale and Lodge 155, Austin. He thanked Dorothy and Vice President Mikeska for their hospitality the previous evening.

Around Finance Committee meets Saturday, March 7 at SPJST Home Office To comply with Article-25(a) of the SPJST By-Laws, the Finance Committee will meet at the Home Office, Temple, Texas, on Saturday, March 7, 1998 at 8:30 a.m.

The committee will review all compensation and financial benefits of the Supreme Lodge. Members wishing to make suggestions to the Committee are welcome to do so. Pleaes submit your suggestions in writing to Rita Vanek, Secretary, P.O. Box 901, El Campo, Texas 77437 before March 2, 1998.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan designated Lodge 5, Tioga/Pilot and Lodge 54, West again in 1998 as his targeted lodges for 1998 and he added Lodge 110, Kaufman and Lodge 195, Cleburne. Director Krizan requested information on how the quotas for the state field representatives are set. He thinks the quotas need to be realistic and also take into consideration circumstances in each district.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to reconsider sending sales agents that have their Fraternal Insurance Counselor designation to the NFIC. The motion carried unanimously. Director Krizan moved, seconded

by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to authorize any FIC who is not an employee, the authorization to attend the NFIC or TFC provided the FIC has sold one million dollars worth of insurance the previous year. The NFIC and TFC has to take place in Texas and the Society would reimburse the FIC for mileage, lodging and meals. The motion carried unanimously. Director Krizan invited everyone to attend the Spring District III meeting at Lodge 66, Elm Mott.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz selected Lodge 76, Wichita Falls and Lodge 157, Lubbock as his targeted lodges for 1998. He thanked President Leshikar for attending District IV Annual meeting. He invited everyone to attend the joint SPJST and RVOS social on February 21, 1998, at Wall. He reported that currently there is the highest demand for farm and ranch loans that he has seen in about 10 years. Number one farm land is selling for about $1,000.00 an acre and irrigated land is selling for about $1,700.00 an acre.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus selected the following lodges as his targeted lodges for 1998: Lodge 65, Crosby, Lodge 175, Rosenberg, and Lodge 181, Conroe. He invited everyone to District V meeting on March 1, 1998, at Lodge 172, Pasadena. The dance class at Lodge 88, Houston has proven to he very popular.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer selected Lodge 164, Rio Hondo, Lodge 202, Jourdanton, and Lodge 117, Robstown as his targeted lodges for 1998. He reported on three inquiries for mortgage loans but he has not heard from them. He requested a copy of the local lodge officers listing to be sent to all of the directors.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek thanked Legal Advisor Kacir for inviting Comptroller John Sharp to the meeting. Director Vanek selected Lodge 151, Wharton and Lodge 148, Blessing as his targeted lodges for 1998. He expressed his opinion that Vice President Mikeska is doing a good job with the field people and hopes to see an increase in sales this year. He also felt Financial Secretary Mikulas and Secretary-Treasurer Anglin are doing a good job at the Home Office.

He reminded the Supreme Lodge members that the Workshop and the Awards Banquet is February 28, 1998, at Lodge 186, Caldwell.

Lodge 186, Caldwell is very excited about hosting this year's SPJST Recognition and Incentive Banquet.

They are looking forward to making this a memorable day for the members of the society.

The theme this year will be "SPJST-The Fountain of Youth."

Scientific studies show that volunteering can be the best kind of therapy for boredom or depression and being an active member can actually help keep a person younger, both mentally and physically. Our plan is to turn SPJST Lodge 186, Caldwell into a wonderful, restful retreat for the day's event.

If your "sense of fun" is up to it, you are encouraged to dress in any shade of blue. It would be interesting to look out across the crowd and see a sea of blue.

Lodge 28, East Bernard hosts District Six Spring Meeting March 22 Attention District Six Lodges!

Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 22, 1998. This is the date of the District Six Spring Meeting which is being hosted by Lodge 28, East Bernard in conjunction with their lodge's 100th Anniversary Celebration.

The SPJST Home Office is located at 520 North Main Street. A major goal of the SPJST Museum is to preserve the Czech cultural heritage by teaching Czech history and traditions. It also stands as a memorial to the pioneer Czech forefathers and mothers who settled Texas. Museum hours are Monday - Friday, 8 - 12 and 1 - 5 and on weekends by special arrangement.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood March 1 meeting to focus on fire prevention Hi! The monthly meeting of Lodge 6, Cottonwood is set for Sunday, March 1, 1998. It will begin at 2 p.m. with a meal served afterwards by Brother Ernest and Sister Evelyn Bezdek.

Lodge 24, Cyclone members encouraged to attend March meeting Dear Members, Make plans now to attend our next lodge meeting on Monday, March 9 at Flag Hall. Things get underway with a dinner social at 7 p.m., followed by the lodge meeting at 7:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a covered dish food item for the meal.

It should he a good meeting. We'll be presenting updates on all of our coming events, with special emphasis on "A Texas Spring Gala," our big annual fund raiser scheduled for April 25. The gala will build on the positive aspects of our past annual fund raisers.

A $50 ticket entitles the holder and guest to an enjoyable evening of dining, drinks and top-notch entertainment. By popular demand, the barbecue dinner will again he catered by our friends at the Cyclone Corral. Temple area businessman and illusionist Allan Lueck will present magic as a prelude to the evening's entertainment by the ever-popular dance hand, Firecreek. In addition, there will he a silent auction and door prizes valued at more than $2,000 awarded to lucky attendees.

Gala tickets will he available at the March meeting and are also available from active lodge members.

As you can imagine, operating a lodge hail is a challenging proposition.

The task only becomes manageable when you have good members to work with. I feel very fortunate in that we have a lot of good officers, trustees and .devoted members to work with at Lodge 24, Cyclone. Still, we always appreciate your active participation. If you're a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone and haven't been active in a while, we'd love to see you again!

Lodge 24, Cyclone readies for spring activities, District meet Dear Members and Friends, SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone met Monday, February 8, 1998, for a homemade spaghetti dinner, complete with salad and garlic bread. Thanks to lodge members for preparing and contributing to the dinner.

Following dinner, President Brian Vanicek called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of our departed lodge and community members.

Lodge members extend sincere sympathy to W.C. Roper who passed away on December 12, 1997, and Lenore Hoelscher, who passed away on February 3, 1998. Sister Hoelscher served Lodge 24 as youth leader in the 1950s. She also organized and led the Cyclone Square Dancing Club. Just recently, Sister Hoelscher resided in an area nursing home and she enjoyed sharing her warm smile and pleasant personality with visitors. Her survivors include son Bobby Hoelscher, Lodge 24's Hall Manager, son Dr. Clifford E. HotIscher, daughter Rosamond Bedrich, daughter Dorothea Vanicek, brother Wilbert Buxkemper, 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

We send greetings to Sister Frances Cabla who was in the hospital. We are delighted Sister LaVerne Cabla is doing well after an eye operation.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Mikeska of Lewisville, Texas, on the birth of Madison Laura Mikeska.

Proud grandparents include Wilbert and Margaret Mikeska.

Special congratulations to Sister LaVerne Cabla, our lodge's 1997 Fraternalist of the Year. She was named Honorable Mention to the state fraternalist of the year. We appreciate Sister LaVerne and all of her hard work. A member since 1955, Sister LaVerne's commitment to the SPJST and its high ideals spans the decade.

She served as our lodge youth leader

from 1970 through 1981 and as lodge president in 1990 and 1991. She has also served terms as lodge vice president and a longtime member of the Board of Trustees. Sister LaVerne has also represented our lodge at six SPJST statewide conventions, further demonstrating the high degree of leadership and initiative that she maintains for the SPJST. During 1997, Sister LaVerne served as a member of the Lodge 24, Cyclone Board of Trustees, Kitchen Chairman, Countywide Sale Day CoChairman, and as the SPJST District Two Publication Committee member.

Thank you, LaVerne, for your dedication to our lodge and our society.

Secretary Bernice Sebek read the January meeting minutes, and they were approved.

Hall Manager Bobby Hoelscher informed the members of upcoming lodge activities. He also reported on the recent football banquet held at Flag Hall. The banquet honored the Rogers Eagles, the 1997 Class 2A State Finalists. Team members include Lodge 24 members Chad Bruggman, Steven Carpenter, Jason Koliha, Andy Macek, Jeffrey Posvar, Justin Psencik, Justin Shirley, and Tommy Joe Williams. We congratulate the team and the coaches on their success.

Sister LaVerne Cabla updated the members on hoard activities. She stated a new water cut-off was installed and a tank was purchased for barbecue purposes. Sister LaVerne also mentioned that Board Chairman Terry Coots repaired some of the hall's tables. Thank you, Brother Terry. The hoard also discussed the need for a bar chairman. If you or anyone who know is interested, please contact any lodge officer or hoard member for more information. Board members elected officers for 1998. They are: Chairman Terry Coots, Vice Chairman Jerry Cabla, and Secretary Bobby Hoelscher.

The next hoard meeting was set for February 16 at 6:30 p.m.

According to Youth Leader Rosamond Baker, the youth club met February 8. They visited a local nursing home and celebrated Valentine's Day. They also attended the District Two skating party at Skate Haven in Temple. Members are encouraged to bring a friend to the next meeting on Sunday, March 1.

Joe A. and Annie Martinek Celebrate 70 Years of Marriage Mr. and Mrs. Joe A. Martinek celebrated their 70th anniversary on January 10, 1998. Father Fred Sidler performed a special mass at 10 a.m. in their home and the couple renewed their wedding vows.

On January 10, 1928, Annie C. Trojacek and Joe A. Martinek were united in marriage at 10 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church in Ennis by Rev. Kowaski. The wedding party included Annie's sister, Agnes (Trojacek) Novosad; her brother, Jerry Trojacek; Joe's sister, Emilie (Martinek) Novy; his brother, Frank Martinek; Annie (Dlabaj) Houser; and Joe Knize. The couple's parents, Josef and Annie Trojacek and Frank and Annie Martinek, honored the couple with dinner and dance at the bride's parents home. Music was provided by Frank Mikula, accordionist.

The couple was honored by their seven children, sons Milton Martinek, Emil Martinek, Marvin Martinek, and daughters, Margaret Krajca, Annette Honza, Betty Macalik, and Adell Rejcek, with a Congratulations to Brother Joe and Sister Annie Martinek who celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on January 10, 1998. The couple was honored by their seven children with a dinner and reception at Lodge 25, Ennis on January 11. More than 275 friends and guests joined in the celebration.

February 8 Meeting Report

At convening time, a good quorum was present. All reports were accepted as given. One motion was made and passed. Some of the loose ends for the District Six meeting were handled. It was brought up that we needed some additional members to help with things on March 22 other than those that attend the meetings.

The fraternal hour buffet luncheon went off without a hitch and enough food was donated to have seconds.

39, Bryan plans 50-year members recognition, Easter party for March 29 Lodge

Lodge 39 Members and Friends, Please be advised that we will celebrate three 50-year membership recipients on March 29. There will be no meeting on our regular third Sunday only for the month of March. We will combine our lodge meeting, honor our 50-year members, and host an Easter party for the children on March 29.

A social and barbecue dinner will begin at 12 noon. Meat, bread, tea, coffee, plates, etc. will all be furnished by the lodge. We ask that each family bring a covered dish or dessert, or both, if you wish.

139, Danbury reports on February meeting

We had a beautiful day for our Anniversary Celebration. Thanks to President Clara Broz, the workers in the kitchen and in the pastry booth, and the workers with bingo and the dance.

It is also nice to see the youth take part.

We had a pleasant surprise after our February meeting, and that was homemade chicken soup make by that loyal and hard-working Johnny Broz. I really enjoyed it!

Everyone was so happy to see Royal Warnasch back after his back surgery and we welcomed him with a big applause at the meeting.

Congratulations to Edna Wehring, our January lodge winner in insurance sales and to Evelyn Mikeska of Lodge 196. That reminds me that I forgot to congratulate Marian Kadlecek who was a winner in November! Welcome, Marie Stayton, to the lodge sales people group. Good luck, Marie!

A.J. Stayton reported on the Men's Club which does a great job of collecting newspapers, and I am always thankful that is one of their projects.

Jerome Ermis is really a dependable collector!

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to Jo Ann Buri and her family on the death of her father, Mr. Ned Cashiola of Houston, and to Harley Cox and his family on the death of his brother, Mr. Haskell Cox of California.

On February 11, the Lodge 139 meeting was called to order by President Lonnie Lostak at E.J.'s Restaurant. Secretary Lorenda Baldwin and Treasurer Eloise Lostak gave their reports and correspondence was read.

Secretary Lorenda Baldwin announced the lodge has five high school graduates who are eligible to apply for the Lodge 139 scholarship.

Please refer to the February 11 issue of the Vestnik for details on how to apply.

The application must he received by April 1.

Seven members of Lodge 139 will have reached 50 years of membership in the SPJST during 1998., The lodge will sponsor an SPJST sign at the Danbury Little League Field. The lodge has been doing this for a number of years, and last year, Secretary Lorenda Baldwin sponsored a Little League team as well.

The dinner following the conclusion of the meeting was enjoyed by all.

Folk Dance Club Don't forget the new Folk Dance Club every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are having lots of fun! The ballet, tap and jazz dance classes for ages 3 to 16 are every Thursday evening.

There is an important district day, and that is the. District Five Spring Meeting this Sunday at Lodge 172, Pasadena. Do try to come; the dinner will he good, and important matters and the election of offices will he brought up. Lodge 172 members are always good hosts.

Two of our members enjoyed trips recently: Era Richards to Arizona and Lillie Spies to California.

177, Academy reports on February meeting, coming events Lodge

The February meeting was called to order by President Hutka followed by the pledge to the American flag.

All officers answered roll call.

Sunshine Chair Libby Bartek reported a get-well card and plant were sent to Carrie Jean Driska who was in the hospital for an operation. She is now at home. Louis Driska reported Walter Jezek was in the hospital in serious condition. We pray for a speedy recovery for Carrie and Walter.

The minutes were approved as written and committee chair reports were given.

Secretary Fritz read communication from the Supreme Lodge informing us we had earned the Gold Award in the amount of $1,000. She encouraged attendance to the state workshop in Caldwell.

Welcome, Mickinzy!

New member accepted into membership was infant Mickinzy Lane Beck, granddaughter of Otis and Jackie Beck. Her parents are Kevin and Christine Beck. "Mickey" attended the meeting and is shown in the picture with her mother. Samantha Diane Beck and Corey Keifer Halpain welcomed Baby Mickey home. They are a 100 percent SPJST family.

The youth club announced several activities they are going to be involved in: i.e. the trash pickup on February 21; District Two Spring Meeting in Cyclone on March 15; doing crafts after the March meeting; an egg hunt for Easter; a weekend trip to Bastrop State Park this summer; etc. Thank you to the adult leaders of the youth club. 180, Burleson reports on February meeting Lodge

Lodge 180, Burleson met on February 3, 1998, for their monthly meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and all stood for a moment of silence for our departed members and friends.

After the business meeting of the lodge and the trustees, the door prizes were won by Julia Dueser, Johnna Hilcher, and our complimentary gifts from the Home Office were won by Marie Hampton and Rosetta Troy.

Rosetta brought some of her homemade soap and Ernest Dueser was lucky to get the soap.

Charles and Ann Schneider went to Mart to visit a brother-in-law, who will he having surgery. Hope that all goes well and he will soon be feeling much better. Also, I am glad to report that John Hilcher is a little better and may be returning to light work. Our thoughts are also with Ida Mayer, a member of Lodge 180, and Clara Gilbert, who are both in care centers and are doing very well. Both Ida and Clara are my sisters. Ida is 93 years of age and has been in a care center for about seven years.

A beautiful valentine basket was made up and chances were sold at the dance by Johnna Hilcher. The money is to be used for dance advertising.

Thank you, Johnna, for a job well done.

After the meeting, we all enjoyed some good homemade chili by Estell Hurtik. We also had some good chili

Remember our country/western dances every Saturday night. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and dancing is from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Set ups are free. This is a nice place to meet friends and to say hello to all the workers. They are all members of Lodge 180 and people who give a lot of time and hard work to keep the lodge going.

Attention all members of Lodge 189: The next quarterly meeting will be Sunday, March 8, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the home of Ernie and Billie Wentrcek at 1530 Bennett in Bryan, Texas.

Circle of Czech Women reports on February meeting Dallas

Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. Faye Wright led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Joe (Cotton) Kartous, husband of Linda Kartous, brother of Marie Kowal, brother-in-law of Lydia Kartous, and cousin of Vlasta Jurcik; and our dear sister Millie Noska, wife of Frank Noska and sister-in-law of Rose Noska.

Bertha welcomed 22 members and seven men guests.

Correspondence read by Faye Wright for Evelyn Trojacek included a thank-you card from the Church of our Savior Episcopal Church for the donation in memory of Joe (Cotton) Kartous; a thank-you card from Linda Kartous for the donation in memory of her husband, Joe (Cotton) Kartous; a thank-you card from the Veterans Auxiliary Gift Shop for the donation in memory of Marie Toberney; a card and donation from Ella Nachtigal in memory of her mother Mary Nesuda; a letter from Dr. John Burnside thanking us for our donation to the Czech Physicians Fund; and a letter from the Southwestern School asking for a donation to the Czech Physicians Fund so that the Czech physicians may come and learn the new treatments and procedures.

News of Members Ella Mae Provazek had angioplasty surgery. Evelyn Trojacek had foot surgery. Our president Bertha Podhrasky was in the hospital over the holidays with pneumonia. Ed Tyrock was in the hospital with pneumonia.

Lydia Tyrock fractured her hip and is now in a rehabilitation center for therapy. Virginia Blatney is in Baylor Hospital. Everyone is doing better and we hope they continue to improve.

Membership Chairperson Bertha Malik is taking the dues for the new year.

Georgia Brozek of Sunshine Committee sent get-well cards to Bertha Podhrasky, Lydia and Ed Tyrock, Evelyn Trojacek, and Ella Mae

Birthdays for January and February were read by Faye Wright.

Announcements The Sister City has not had any meetings. It was recommended they need to get new members and restart.

On April 15, 1998, Sokol will have a concert guitarist, Vladislav Blaha.

Unfinished Business The by-laws revisions were read by Faye Wright and we discussed and voted to pass them as revised. Faye Wright will work on the information for the new book and send it to the publisher.

A nominating committee selected by the members were Faye Wright, Bertha Malik and Bessie Petr. They will bring the names of the candidates to the March meeting and we will vote on the new officers. The officers will assume office at the April meeting.

Worth Friendship Club reports on February meeting Fort

The meeting of the Friendship Club was called to order on Wednesday, February 4, 1998, by President Jo Prochaska. Thirty-one members were welcomed. Our long-time guest, Frances Matthews, joined the Club.

She was made "most welcome." Vice President Rosie Steinman was ill and unable to attend. The president thanked Joe Kozel on his wonderful accordion music.

The pledge to the flag was said.

Secretary Merle Kovar read the minutes from the previous meeting and Treasurer Lydia Alholm presented the treasurer's report. Both reports were approved as read.

Sunshine Chairperson Linda Homer reported sympathy cards were sent to Anna Johnson on the loss of her nephew and to Rosie Steinman on the loss of her nephew; get-well cards to Rosie Steinman, Merle Kovar, Rosemary Gribble, and Maria Prill; miss you card to Mary Pavey; and thank-you cards to all the officers of the Club.

It was decided to donate all of the Club's utensils to St. Thomas' kitchen.

Wednesday, February 25, 1998—VESTNIK/15 then leave them there for their use. A discussion was held as to when the Friendship Club was actually started, and to the best of several members recollections, the Club was organized in the early 1940s by parents of several of our members.

The July luncheon outing was discussed, and upon motion made, seconded and passed, it was voted that any member would be required to attend at least four meetings per year to be eligible to participate in the luncheon paid by the Club.

A thank-you note for the Christmas monetary gift was read from Father Sal, and a thank-you note for the canned goods was read from Connie Titus of St. Thomas' Food Bank.

Following discussion, it was decided that each member bring a couple of cans each month for the St. Thomas' Food Bank. This is such a worthy cause.

President Prochaska then reminded us that it was time for elections.

Several members expressed their thanks and appreciation to the officers on jobs well done. Thereafter, upon motion made and seconded, the following were elected to serve for the following year: President Josephine Prochaska Vice President Rosie Steinman Secretary Merle Kovar Treasurer Lydia Alholm Sunshine Person Linda Homer Money Making Projects Annie Whitsell Reporter Libbie Vrla Money making projects were discussed, and it was decided that a white elephant auction would be held in March, and a bake sale in April. Hopefully, the prettier the wrap, the more cash it will bring in. A top notch auctioneer will be on hand to handle the sale.

The singing of "Happy Birthday" went out to Frank Kovar, Margie Kret and Linda Rangel who celebrated birthdays in January, and to Roy Alholm, Rosemarie Dribble, Billy King, Mary Ann Kozel and Rose Nieswiadomy who celebrated birthdays in February. May all of you have many more. Billy King's birthday was on the day of our meeting, and in the afternoon she was checking into the hospital for some tests. Good luck and hope everything is going well for you.

President Jo reminded everyone that the March hostess will be Harold Balvin, Bessie Brevina, Anna Johnson, and Annie Whitsell.

News of Members Merle Kovar was sporting a new special shoe as a result of hammer toe surgery. Hope your toe is much better by now.

Alma Anderson reported that her sister-in-law and former member, Millie Bell, had hip replacement surgery. She is 84 years young. Our get-well wishes go out to you.

Hear that Frank Prochaska has had problems in keeping up with his hammers, so each of his seven grandsons gave him a hammer with their names on them for Christmas. It's been two months since Christmas, so Frank, how many do you still have? Don't hide them too good so that you don't forget where you hid them!

Lydia and Roy Alholm keep their bags packed at all times as this time they traveled to Bossier City for a couple of days. We all know what Lydia did, and yes, she did come away a winner, while Roy got caught up on his reading.

Agnes Reznicek told us about all her fruit trees—she has apple, pear, peach, apricot, plum, and fig. Now we will expect you to share the "fruits of your labor" this summer.

Rose Nieswiadomy reported on her first new great-granddaughter, Ashley Michele Derryberry of Azle, Texas.

Ashley has a six-year-old brother, Trey Regen. Congratulations, Rose!

But, Bessie Brezina tops Rose; she reported on three new great-grandchildren—one in each month of November, December, and January and named Mary Catherine, Jessica and ?. Triple congratulations to Bessie!

Sympathy goes out to Lillian Smith on the loss of her sister, Frances Adams.

She and her daughter, Sharron, traveled to Houston to attend the funeral.

Linda Horner reported that her brother, Dr. Tim Kret of First Eye Care, participated in the National Eye Health Education Program during January where they offered free glaucoma screenings. Hopefully, everyone was able to take advantage of these exams to detect glaucoma and prevent vision loss.

Our member, Mary Pavey in Alabama, is planning a month's visit to Texas this summer. We are looking forward to seeing you. Still miss you!

Our February hostesses were Camile Bolcer, Billy King, Rose Romeo, and Lillian Smith. After the meeting was adjourned, grace was said, a wonderful luncheon was served and games were played.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club meets March 4

Dear Readers, The youth club had their regular meeting Sunday, February 1 at 1:30 p.m. There were five members present and two guests. Our guests were Brooke Craig and Jesse Karlik. We look forward to seeing Brooke and Jesse again.

The youth took cakes to the rest home on February 4 and they baked Valentine cookies to be served at the rest home on Valentine's Day. A Valentine party was held Friday, February 13. The youth enjoyed a hamburger supper and later they exchanged Valentines. Everyone had a good time and plenty to eat.

At the March meeting, the youth will have a kite flying contest (weather permitting). The meeting will be Sunday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. Please note the meeting is before the adult meeting Hope to see all you, of you then.

Camp Lone Star General Information The Johnson Retreat Center is a modern year round facility. As many as 104 people can he housed in the hotel-style rooms. Meals are served buffet style.

Amenities include: • 20 bedrooms with one double bed, two single bunk-style beds and a private bath. Each room sleeps four to six people.

• Pillows, blankets and bed and bath linens are furnished. Please bring your own towel for swimming and the hot tub.

7exas District of National Mance of Czea. Catholics meeting cancelled Due to illnesses of some of the officers and conflicts in scheduling, the spring meeting of the Texas District of the National Alliance of Czech Catholics scheduled for 10 a.m.

Saturday, March 7,-1998, at the KJT Home Office in La Grange, Texas, has been cancelled.

The summer meeting tentatively set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 1998, at the KJT Home Office is planned to be held as scheduled.

Dues for 1998 memberships in the Texas District Of National Alliance of Czech Catholics should now be paid.

Thereafter, the band continued to perform at various festivals around the state, including the Caldwell Kolache Fest, Wurst Fest, the Czech Fest in Rosenberg and the Ellinger Fest. Mr. Kovanda, who has since returned to the Czech Republic, arranged over 90 percent of the music performed by the 12-member hand. Presently, George Krejci serves as the musical director, and Leland Miller of Fayetteville acts as manager.

The Dance Hall Boys of Austin, Texas, organized in 1994 hy Jerry Ondrasek, has the distinction of being the only Czech band from the- State Capital and the first Czech Band in Texas with its own Web Page. Dennis Swatek of Taylor plays lead trumpet for the five-member band that has over 35 years of combined experience.

Playing a variety of music, including "old-time," country and swing, the Dance Hall Boys perform original arrangements that have not been performed in many years, have never been recorded, or never played in Texas.

Their aim is to bring back the forgotten music and play it as it was written.

Czech-style food will he available at the gala, and a silent auction is planned for the enjoyment of the guests.

The Cultural Center, to he built in LaGrange on approximately 70 acres of land, will preserve and promote the history, language, culture and heritage of Texans of Czech ethnicity.

CZECH REPUBLIC Texas Czech.Heritage and Cultural Center plans Spring Czech Gala at Lodge 18, Elgin The Spring Czech Gala, a fund raising event sponsored by the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc., will be held on Sunday, April 26, 1998, at the SPJST Lodge 18 Hall in Elgin, Texas, from 2 to 7 p.m. The event, which is being hosted by Lodge 18, located on Highway 95 north of the Highway 290 intersection, will feature the Kovanda's Czech Band of Houston and the Dance Hall Boys of Austin.

Additional entertainment will be provided by the Czech Folk Dancers of West, Texas, and 13-year-old Julie Ann Dirba of Granger, Texas.

The Kovanda Czech Band was organized in 1984 by Vladimir Kovanda, a native of Czechoslovakia, to perform at a Czech play at SPJST Lodge 88 in Houston, Texas•
