SPJST Makes Sound Decision A It Happened Last Week

The SPJST Supreme Lodge met in Temple last week for their first quarterly meeting of 1998. Under new business, the body designated four groups as "SPJST Statewide Charities" in 1998.

What this means is that in 1998, the SPJST will focus its statewide fund-raising efforts to support the goals and objectives of the previously mentioned groups. The first step in this process will be to raise an awareness of these organizations, what they do and their plans for the future. We'll do that through a series of articles in the Vestnik and through information that will be shared with our local lodges.

To stimulate your interest and support for the statewide fund raising effort, the SPJST plans to offer contributors a unique incentive — a recording of classical music by Czech composers and an original composition performed by Brother Richard Urbis, a member of Lodge 117, Robstown. Brother Urbis, as many of our longtime readers may recall, was a perennial competitor and favorite at SPJST District Seven and statewide Youth Achievement Day contests. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music in New York with a Masters Degree and is currently Professor of Music at The University of Texas at Brownsville. With numerous concert performances to his credit, he was a finalist in the New York Chopin Association Competition in 1987 and has performed in the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Russia.

Tentative plans are to have the recording completed and available for distribution sometime in June.

Proceeds generated by the statewide fund raising effort will be divided evenly between the four designated groups.

Local lodges will also be encouraged to get involved in the fund raising effort.

Thanks to the Supreme Lodge for supporting the statewide fund raising initiative. This speaks well to our Society's longstanding charge to "endeavor to keep alive the cherished customs, heritage, culture and language of our forefatherS," as stated in the Preamble of our SPJST By-Laws.

Short summaries of the groups selected follow. Watch for additional information in the Vestnik in the coming weeks.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc. La Grange, in historic Fayette County, the "Cradle of Czech Immigration," is the site for the proposed Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, a multifunctional facility that will preserve and promote the history, language, culture and heritage of Texans of Czech ethnicity who trace their ancestry to the Czechs who immigrated from the present-day Czech Republic or the former states of Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia and Silesia.

The Czech Cultural and Community Center (CCC) Based in Houston, the CCC aims to preserve, record and celebrate the language, scholarship and arts of Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia and Silesia through the sponsorship of various events, exhibits and outreach projects. Their plan also calls for building a facility in the Museum District of Houston to provide member services and facilities for meetings, lectures, exhibits, language instruction, music and other performances.

Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) CEFT was organized 40 years ago to promote the Czech language and culture in Texas. In 1993, CEFT established the Texas Chair of Czech Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Now, CEFT is well on its way to establishing the CEFT Czech Fellowship at Texas A&M University. The program will 1) bring advanced graduate students from two Moravian universities to Texas A&M; 2) provide Czech language lessons at Texas A&M for students and the public; 3) provide Czech-to-English translation services for the Texas Czech community; 4) provide assistance to Czech-American historical and cultural groups in Texas; and 5) encourage ties between Texas and the Czech Republic.

The Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children Children with chronic illnesses come, free of charge, to the Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children, nestled on a 125acre tract on the Lampasas River in the scenic hill country of west Bell County, Texas. Here the children, their friends and families, under the supervision of charitable hospitals, enjoy nature, swim, hike, ride, fish and play to their hearts content, in a non-hospital atmosphere.

This past Thursday, January 8th, I received a letter from Helen Hegwood addressed to the Supreme Lodge informing us that she was retiring from the position of District Five Field Representative effective March 1, 1998.

We prefer an individual who has five to ten years of experience in insurance sales and supervision experience will also be an item of consideration. The position requires some of the following: 1. Ability to supervise.

Readers Wri e students study Czech heritage and holiday traditions Jacksonville

As a Social Studies project at Jacksonville Intermediate School, we chose to study Christmas traditions from around the world. Since my great-grandparents came to Texas from Czechoslovakia in the early 1900s, I signed my fourth graders up to highlight the Czech Republic. The culmination of the study was to be a PTO meeting/celebration to allow students and parents to learn more about "Christmas Around the World."

In the early planning stages, I wasn't sure how many details I was going to be able to come up with. I began my search at my grandparents' home, Jerry and Lee Bartos of Henderson (SPJST Lodge 178, Longview). They happened to have a great book called Christmas in Texas that gave me many good ideas on ways some Czech descendants have celebrated Christmas throughout the years. knew I wanted to give my students the chance to research a little of the history and geography of Czechoslovakia, as well as focus on some of the fun and festive traditions of the Czech heritage.

Food, of course, seemed a logical place to start. I began assigning students to bring various Czech dishes for us all to share at our celebration.

Some students brought fish and Heather O'KeIIy shrimp dishes (carp is a traditional Czech Christmas dish). Others made gingerbread men, Christmas bread, and kolaches. My mother and I even tackled a recipe for making kolaches from scratch! They turned out well, I might add. My grandmother brought sauerkraut, which was a big hit! Many of the kids and their parents had never tasted kolaches or sauerkraut.

Although I knew the snacks would be crucial to the success of our event, I still felt there was something missing.

Then, my grandmother had a great idea. She thought of her friends Joe and Florence Kalenda in Longview.

Joe Kalenda is a first generation Czech-Texan who speaks the Czech language and has a special way of maintaining his heritage. He and his wife were excited to come visit my

WHEREAS, the Supreme Lodge and the Slavonic.

Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) membership was saddened to learn of the death of Nicodemus Alois Morris, past President and Editor of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST); and WHEREAS, Brother Morris left surviving him to mourn his departure, his daughter, Katherine E. Smith; his sons, Nicholas K. Morris, Stephen P Morris, Josef N. Morris, and Michael M. Morris; his brothers, John Morris, Raymond Morris, and Aldrey Morris; eleven grandchildren; and a host of relatives, friends and neighbors, all of whom, with all the members of the Supreme Lodge of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) desire to record their sorrow at the death on December 27, 1997, of Brother Morris who worked harmoniously and diligently for the good of the Society for many years and was appointed as Editor of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas in 1962 and elected as Editor at the 1964 Convention in Waco and elected as President of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) at the 1968 SPJST Convention and served in that capacity until 1984, and WHEREAS, all members of the Supreme Lodge of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) hear willing testimony that Brother Morris contributed much to the growth and progress of the Society as President and Editor of the Society and that he was a good man who will he missed and remembered by his many friends mourning his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be tendered to the family as an expression of heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement; one copy be sent to the Vestnik for publication; and one copy be spread on the minutes of the Supreme Lodge of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST).

On December 9, 1997, the moment finally arrived. I had invited all of my students and their families and friends to visit my classroom to celebrate a Czech Christmas. I was rather nervous about the event because I was afraid that I would not have a big turnout. I was also a little afraid that I would!

Well, my room was packed! Mr. Kalenda greeted the students speaking Czech and dressed in a Czech costume carrying his accordion. The students and I were fascinated! After a short introduction, Mr. Kalenda handed me a hanging garment and asked me if I would go try on the traditional Czech costume that had been handed down in his family for many years. I was honored and excited! The kids got a kick out of seeing their teacher dressed in costume and then inviting them to

I could never thank Mr. Kalenda enough for bringing such a wonderful learning experience to my class! My family and I enjoyed learning about our heritage and my students enjoyed the chance to ask questions about life in the Czech Republic today, as well as how Mr. Kalenda felt growing up in Texas speaking only Czech at home and only English at school. This whole experience was both educational and fun. I look forward to introducing my new friends, the Kalendas, to my future classes and including the often overlooked country of Czechoslovakia in my classroom.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville reports on December lodge activities Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, December 14, 1997, at the Youth Center at 2 p.m.

President Joe Siptak opened the meeting. Flag Bearers Elizabeth Vahalik and Christopher Vanek presented the colors and led the pledge to the U.S. flag.

The roll of officers was called with Assistant Youth Leader Diane Scott absent.

Secretary Margaret Smotek read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved. Communications were read.

FAC Lillie Balusek and Treasurer Helen Zabransky reported.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported that get-well cards were sent to Frances Urban, Robert Pesek, Lois Cejka, and Margaret Bucek. She also recognized Vicky Zak, Evelyn Holy, Lillie Balusek, and Elsie Mascheck for assisting at the monthly bingo for the residents at Stevens Convalescent Center. The youth club was thanked for the Christmas stockings they gave to the residents.

Youth Leader Shirley Kalmus reported on the youth club activities.

They sung Christmas carols at Southern Manor for the residents and plan to adopt an angel at Wal-Mart.

State Queen Elizabeth Wagner told the members about , the Temple Christmas Parade she and State Duchess Elizabeth Vahalik attended on Monday, December 1 along with State King J.J. Novak and State Duke Michael Kenney. It was a cold night but the decorated carriage ride was fun and also the viewing of the many decorated lighted floats. Afterwards, the royalty court and their families enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies at the Home Office.

A discussion followed on the election of a historian. A motion was made and seconded that our lodge does not need a historian at this time. The motion passed.

The installation of officers will be at the January meeting.

Christmas Program

The youth club then sang "0 Come All Ye Faithful," "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing," and "Joy to the World."

Elizabeth Wagner read the history of each song. Santa Claus then arrived and visited with everyone. Gifts were given out and pictures were taken.

Goody bags were given to the youth club members and the officers.

Everyone received an apple. Winners in the youth club coloring contest were: First Place — John Richardson Second Place — Joshua Siptak Third Place — Trevor Scott Judges were Elsie Mascheck, Gayenell Chudej, and Annette Novak.

Door prize winners were Bryan Richardson and Susan Siptak.

Everyone then enjoyed a delicious lunch followed by bingo.

The Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga monthly meeting on January 11, 1998, was called to order by President David at 12:50 p.m. He then lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes of last meeting were read

by Sherrie Watkins in the absence of Secretary Raymond David, who came'. in later. They were approved as read.

The treasurer's report was given by Elise Koerner. It was approved as given.

We were privileged to have with us our State Youth Director Joni Lange and District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr. Both spoke briefly on state and district youth programs.

Also present with us was Jerry Kucera, State Field Representative, and Sid Pokladnik, former Director for District Three. Thanks for coming, Sid. We are always glad to have you.

Brother Jerry conducted the installation of officers for 1998. He is always a welcome presence at our meetings. He then gave a glowing report on progress of Lodge 5 for 1997 and presented SPJST 100 year pins to each of Lodge 5's sales representatives.

We are happy to report that our new sales representative, Elise Koerner, wrote 17 applications for the month of December. If all are accepted, Lodge 5 will be eligible for the platinum award.

She also wrote three applications in

January this year. Congratulations, Elise, keep up the good work! Sherrie Watkins has already written four applications for January. Keep it up lady, you're doing great!

Brother Sid Pokladnik spoke briefly offering glowing words of praise and encouragement. Thanks again, Sid, for being with us today.

Jerry Kucera brought several items from the Home Office for door prizes.

These items were greatly appreciated.

Tickets sold for our monthly drawing netted $95. Brother Harry Schroeder won the drawing, which was $47.50. The other half goes into the building fund.

The secret item for our auction was donated by Robert and Alice David.

Thanks, folks. Brother Johnny Kubala won the bid for $40. Donnie Koerner volunteered to bring items for the February action. Thanks, Donnie.

Jack Carender served a pot luck lunch, which was well-accepted by all. along with caesar's salad and hot bread, furnished by Sherrie Watkins.

Members brought desserts. There were 24 members and nine guests present.

Brother Robert Dobecka called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 4. His knee or knees were not working well, so he conducted our meeting sitting down. That's OK, Robert. We all hope you get to feeling better soon.

The youth club led us all in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Sister Georgie Soukup gave her report of 22 members present. Sister Barbara Hykel, secretary, was absent with pneumonia. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

Financial Secretary Brother George Straten gave his report. He had not received any mail from the home office, so he had nothing to report on new members. He gave the hall bookings for the month.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer, gave her report. It was approved as read. Sister Hattie Kaska, Sunshine Committee, gave us her report. She reported sending get-well cards to Sisters Shirley Romero and Stella Perez. Also, get-well cards were sent to Brothers George Smajstrla, Paul Lenart and Eddie Hykel. 24, Cyclone members excited about 1998 activities Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, On the cool winter's eve of Monday, January 12, SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone members met at Flag Hall for a warm homemade dinner, including turkey, dressing and a table full of trimmings.

Thanks to the lodge members who prepared or contributed to the delicious meal.

After dinner, President Brian Vanicek called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of our departed lodge members and residents of the community.

Lodge members extend sincere sympathy to the families of Mr. Charlie Schiller, who passed away on November 20, 1997, and past Supreme Lodge President Mr. Nick A. Morris, who passed away on December 27, 1997. Mr. Morris served Lodge 24 as Vice President and Lodge Trustee in 1989. Our thoughts and prayers' are with these families.

We send greetings to Sherry Tyroch and Rosamond Baker who are both recuperating from recent injuries.

We welcome Cody Allen Stepan to Lodge 24. He is our newest member.

Something Old and Something New Under routine business, President Brian Vanicek read December's meeting minutes. Treasurer Penny Coots outlined the lodge's deposits and disbursements for December. Hall Manager Bobby Hoelscher informed the members of 1998 lodge bookings and activities. Bar Chairman Terry Coots, Kitchen Chairman LaVerne Cabla, and TiCket Chairman Bobby Hoelscher presented December activities reports. Brother Coots stated that the hall is searching for a bar chairman.

Under new business, President Vanicek presented information on Lodge 24, Cyclone's successful participation in the 1997 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program. Details, he stated, would he forthcoming in the Vestnik.

Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Richard Greger then reported on the previous day's Lodge 24, Cyclone brainstorming session. As part of his presentation, he displayed a board with more than 30 old and new lodge development ideas that members discussed during the meeting.

Brother Greger encouraged members to keep thinking about other fund raising ideas and post them on the "brainstorming hoard" that will he at all lodge meetings. Thanks, Brother Greger, for your enthusiasm and initiative.

In conjunction with Vice President Greger's report, President Brian Vanicek reported on two exciting product sales initiatives for Lodge 24, Cyclone in 1998. He concluded his presentation by stating that he will share additional information with the members at the February meeting.

Also under new business, members voted to approve — for a six-month trial period — a lodge rental incentive of $25 to Lodge 24, Cyclone members who rent the hall to individuals or businesses. If you're a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone — active or not — this means you! The final item under new business — a discussion of the historic Cyclone Cemetery — was brought up by Reporter Melanie Zavodny. The cemetery, which lies midway between the lodge hall and Cyclone Corral, is the final resting spot for many of the community's original Anglo settlers. A committee of David Nauert, Brian Vanicek and Melanie Zavodny will investigate refurbishing the Cyclone Cemetery for a community project. A report will he presented at the February meeting.

Lodge 32, Victoria expresses sympathy to Motal family Our deepest sympathy to Lodge 32 President Adolph and Valeria Motal whose son, John Motal, passed away on January 12. John is also survived by his wife, Frances Motal. sons, Jason and Eric Motal, and four sisters. Our thoughts and prayers have been with the Motal family during John's lengthy illness. Lodge 79, Corpus Christi reports on 1997 activities Looking at Lodge 79, Corpus Christi activities from a fraternal angle — the lodge was ver y active in a number of worthwhile projects.

Each month, we present some worth y cause a check for 550. We also donate S25 to the scholarship fund in memory of our deceased members.

In April, we had our annual awards dinner and 50- year pin presentation. A

We had nice Mother's Day and`: Father's Day dinners.

A number of members attended the 100th year celebration of SPJST in Belton. 4 In September, our lodge had a big dance celebrating 100 years of SPJST and 100 years of Majek music.

Members of the lodge had the mayor proclaim "100 Year SPJST Celebration Day" in Corpus Christi. The Majek Orchestra played and we had 556 in attendance. It was the biggest dance in many years.

In October, members had the mayor " in Corpus proclaim "Czech Day_ Christi.

In November, we had a catered Thanksgiving turkey dinner. We also asked members to bring canned food or donate to the scholarship fund.

Collected were 140 cans of food and a good amount for the scholarship fund.

A big supper was given for 12 folks visiting from the Czech Republic in December. Seventy members and guests attended.

Also in December, on Christmas Eve, a number of our members helped serve the poor and hungry at the annual HEB "Feast of Sharing."

Our lodge also received a gold award for recruiting new members.

Twenty-six letters were sent to graduating seniors to apply for scholarships.

Sixty-five letters containing individual fraternal acts report were sent out to members who do not attend regular meetings.

Back to Business (and a buffet) at Lodge 87, Temple Our new year began with a bang as Mary Ann and Lad Zatopek prepared and served an appetizing buffet for us all. They claimed that it was just the leftovers from our Christmas feast, but nothing about it seemed recycled.

They received a prolonged round of applause following our meeting which was delayed until we had all thoroughly enjoyed the fruits of their labor.

The meeting was called to order at 7:55 p.m. when President Alford led the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for the dead. We dispensed with the reading of the minutes, since there weren't any! Not only had we tabled all business for our celebration on December 9, but your humble author had forgotten her "SPJST hag," including all the notes from last month.

Not to mention copies of the photos which I hope will appear in this issue of the Vestnik! It was hardly an auspicious beginning for one of our newly installed officers, but President Alford, Vice President Zatopek, Treasurer Entrop, and especially our Fraternal Activities Coordinator Thelma Groppell were well-prepared and fulfilled their duties splendidly. Twin sisters, Ruby, left, and Roxy Frnka, of Lodge 84, Dallas earned the distinction in 1997 of buying — and then giving away — approximately 140 copies of the SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbook.

After the recent nice write-up in the Vestnik by Lanita Anglin about the sale of 11,000 anniversary cookbooks, we at Lodge 84, Dallas want to report on two members who are truly fraternal and love SPJST. They are identical twins Roxy Frnka and Ruby Frnka. All of their lives, they have dressed alike and done things together.

What did they do during 1997?

They bought and gave away approximately 140 copies of the SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbook. The sisters have mailed cookbooks all over the United States to their relatives and friends, doctors, dentists and service people at their condominium complex. Even the plumber's helper, who was getting married, received a copy to pass along to his new bride. The youth at Lodge 84 were so impressed by the huge sale of 90 cookbooks that they all signed a nice thank-you card and mailed it to them. Roxy and Ruby really were thrilled by this.

The twins' parents were Joseph V.

Frnka and Anna Frnka in Columbus, Texas. Both are deceased. Joseph Frnka was an attorney and presided at the Nurenburg trials in Germany after World War H. The old homestead in Columbus is marked by a state historical marker.

Roxy worked for Mobil Oil in Philadelphia and moved to Dallas when Mobil moved here. She is now retired. Ruby worked for the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia for 32 years.. She also worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 10 years. After retirement, she moved to Dallas, Texas, to be near sister Roxy. They live in the same complex, but each has her own condo.

For many years, both have been very active in professional acting in the theatre, television commercials, and crime stoppers segments. Roxy also was featured in the JFK movie made a few years back.

Lodge 87, Temple Installs 1998 Officers

Our treasurer's report was read and approved, although our annual insurance premium and property tax bills were painful to accept. Sister Groppell wished us all a happy New Year and encouraged us to attend the many tournaments and events to take place over the next few months. She plans to enter the Seaton "42" Tourney in April, while I have my eyes on the Horseshoe Competition in Lions Park here in Temple that same month.

We also discussed the proposal for the SPJST Seniors Club, but no overwhelming enthusiasm was evident.

The suggested activities sound like really good ideas, but as a member of the under 60 set. I thought we should try to involve the whole lodge. I have to admit, however, that the most popular suggestion was the idea of a group travel, and, judging from the conversations, we young whippersnappers might have difficulty keeping up!

We next reviewed our old business.

Our audit committee had been reconfigured after one of its members moved out of town, but Thelma Groppell and Bertha Capps will be checking our books. They will be well-served by Treasurer Entrop's beautifully printed summaries. Next, we discussed the planned reconstruction of North 50th Street which will require the use of a portion of the property belonging to the lodge. President Alford will be the spokesperson for our Board of Directors during the negotiations. The Board includes the officers for the lodge as well as Brothers Sid Kacir and Samantha Kacir and Grandpa Sid Kacir listen intently as Lad Zatopek expounds on SPJST business.

Norma Alford reported the success of the drive for our "Christmas family," and congratulated us on increasing our collections toward the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. We hope to continue the trend, perhaps at an increased rate next year!

Under new business, Vice President Zatopek informed us that our water costs may change. He attended the meeting of the Bell County Water District, which is planning to sell seven water meters, probably including ours. to the City of Temple. We are all unsure of what this will mean for our water costs, since we may then have to pay garbage and sewer fees, despite the

Next, Brother Keith Gatewood, who has been kept from attending our monthly meetings by Supreme Lodge business, was "let out of school" for an evening to let us know about the first project for the New Year. SPJST is looking to assign all "orphan members" to their very own sales representative, so that all of us will know exactly whom to call if the need arises. He will be meeting with all of our lodge's representatives so that they can go over the lists and participate in the assignment process. He also told us about the 10- and 20-year term policies, which will be described in a mailing to all members between 20 and 50 years old. Before concluding his remarks, he mentioned plans for a new annuity which will fulfill the requirements of the Roth IRA and allow tax savings for first time home purchases, health expenses and educational spending.

Finally, I presented the list of our 50-year members and we discussed the options for presenting them with their pins. We have 11 members who joined SPJST in 1948! We decided that this was certainly reason for a celebration and justifies a big party. Brother Sid Kacir moved that we plan festivities for October and invite all the recipients to join us for a festive presentation of their 50-year pins. To those who do not wish to attend, we will send them by mail. If any members are physically unable to attend we will try to arrange a travelling presentation.

We then concluded our meeting after a lively discussion about appropriate Valentine fare. We decided on pizza (it's red, isn't it?), soda and a surprise dessert to be provided by me.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities I am still trying to recuperate from the bad fall I had the day before Christmas. I was very disappointed that I could not attend the service for Brother Nick Morris especially since I had a way to go. Viola Cox and I thank you, Clara and Johnny Broz, for bringing us copies of the service; how very thoughtful of you!

Compliments go to you, Editor Brian Vanicek, on the beautiful tribute you gave Brother Nick Morris. You, with the help of Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, brought out some of his great achievements in the SPJST. Then, in your editorial you told how Brother Morris was a family man, a wonderful friend, a man of many talents, and an organizer of the statewide Chorus and the Seaton Brass Band. It was great, Brian, and I want you to know I have received calls complimenting your tribute!

Our members were saddened to hear of the death of an active and loyal member, Jerry Poston. He served on the Social Night Committee for years and will be remembered for his friendly and kind ways. He was a member of DAV and the American Legion. The service was at Houston National Veterans Cemetery. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to wife Betty, daughter Jerri Staude, son Johnny and Trisha Keel, and other relatives. Our sympathy also goes to Ted Przybyla, a member of our Men's Club, whose wife Jeanette passed away.

Royal Warnasch had back surgery.

He and wife Laura are active and loyal members for years, and I know how happy she is to have him home so soon. Royal, here's hoping you have a quick recovery!

Another active and loyal member, Thomas Marsh, had a bad fall and broke his hip and shoulder. Thomas is president of the Men's Club and he and

and Margaret Jungman Celebrate 50 years of Marriage Joe

Joe and Margaret Jungman were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception dinner and dance on Sunday, November 16, 1997, at National Hall in Fort Worth.

Hosts for the party were their children.

Joe and Margaret were married on November 5, 1947, at St. John's Catholic Church by Rev. Paul Mosier.

They lived in Rhineland before moving to Fort Worth in 1956 and

then to Arlington in 1969.

Joe worked for Amtrak for 20 years while Margaret worked as a floral designer for 16 years. They are both retired. Last summer, they moved to their farm in Weatherford, Texas. They have six children, 18 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Joe is a member of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth for many years.

Lydia are such dependable workers and will also be missed until he is able to be back. He is at Northwest Memorial Hospital. Some of us had a bad start this year, but hopefully it will get better.

Loege Anniversary Celebration

Coming up is a big day on Saturday, February 8, the Lodge Anniversary Celebration. President Clara Broz informs me that there will be a good dinner, entertainment by our Choral Club and Concert Orchestra and a dance starting at 5 p.m. with popular Lee Roy Matocha. More details later.

We are having good dances and have one more left in January, Donnie Wavra on the 24th. There is no dance on the 31st.

92, Fort Worth reports on January meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, It was a rainy day on our meeting date of Sunday, January 11, but we had a nice attendance. The officers gave good reports on the progress of the lodge. Lodge 92 Youth Club led the membership in the pledge; it is nice to see the youth taking part in the lodge.

The membership stood in silence for the departed members that have passed away in December and January.

Secretary Christine Zich had quite long minutes due to two months of reports and regular things of the lodge.

She does a nice job and very seldom has corrections.

Albert Kubala explained some things about insurance and other items.

Treasurer Kenneth Krivanek has three pay-outs and the income bank balances on paper that are given to members so they can see where the money comes and goes. This way members that do not hear too good can read as he explains his report.

Financial Secretary Evelyn Spacek reported on membership dues and those that cancelled policies or have passed away. It seems that we gain

some and then lose some.

The membership gave Sister Anna Lesikar a nice applause as she recomthended three new members. President Kubala and FAC Martha Durham presented Anna a pretty centennial pin from the Home Office. Anna is proud of the pin and says that she will continue to help the sales representatives in getting new members.

I understand that we may have written 25 new members so we will be able to receive the gold award and also a nice check. We members thank our sales representatives for a splendid job of writing new members. If you know of anyone that needs insurance with SPJST, let one of the sales representatives know and they will explain about the insurance policies that are available.

We did not elect our FAC in November due to a member death so at this January meeting, Martha Durham was elected. President Kubala asked Carl W. Zich to install her into the office of the FAC. I was proud to do the honor.

Brother Ed Faraizl is still in the hospital or rehab recovering from being sick or a slight stroke. Flora Koci is also in the hospital but as of now, we do not know the cause of her illness.

We had three members that have birthdays in January. Brother Emory Davenport is 83 years of age, Ruby Morton would not give her age, and Monalee Hattendorf says she is past 39 years.

I was asked to be sure to put our dance schedule of country/western bands as well as our polka and waltz bands. So from now on, they will be in the calendar section of the Vestnik.

1 is Sunday, February country/western music by Classic band from 4 to 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person.

Saturday, February 14 is the Valentine dance, sponsored by Lodge 92 youth club. The Classic band will play country/western music from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Admission is $6 per person.

Joke: When I won big playing the video lottery at the local pub, I decided to share my good fortune with my wife.

Knowing how much she loves surprises, I slipped a $50 bill into her purse.

The next day, I asked her if she had any spare cash. She said, "no."

Baffled I asked her about the $50 bill. "Oh, that wasn't mine," she said with a puzzled look. "I figured the grocery cashier had given it to me by mistake, so I went back and exchanged it for a $5 bill."

133, San Antonio members enjoy luncheon at December meeting Lodge

Lodge 133, San Antonio held a Christmas luncheon on Sunday, December 21 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. Members enjoyed ham and a delicious array of side dishes.and desserts.

Couples celebrating wedding anniversaries in December included Otto and Jane Hurta (58 years) and Richard and Kathy Uribe (17 years).

Sick members include Theresa Jasek, Grace Rohati and Rob Popp.

Our sincere sympathy is extended to the families of Richard Rochen and Alice Foster who recently passed away.

161, Jourdanton encourages members to submit fraternal activities report Lodge

Lodge 161, Jourdanton met January 11, 1998, at the Jourdanton State Bank Community Room for their first meeting of the year. Eleven members and one guest were present.

President Milton Koch welcomed everyone. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited followed by a silent prayer for the family of Nick A. Morris and for the speedy recovery of Leona Pivonka.

District Director Bob Bayer installed the officers: President Milton Koch, Vice President/FAC Lucy Zepeda, Secretary/Treasurer Tillie Koch, and Reporter Bettie House.

Lodge 179, Warrenton reports on January meeting activities Lodge 179, Warrenton met on January 8.

The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Our new president Lloyd Goehring presided.

Joseph J. and Joan J. Sykora were transferred to our lodge from Lodge 88. We extend a welcome and we hope they will take an active part in our lodge.

Laverne Kunkel, Helen Leonhardt, and Leroy Levien were recognized for their January birthdays. Three couples had anniversaries, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Leonhardt, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Baack, and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Peters.

Our new financial secretary Alfred Baack collected local lodge dues for 1998.

Michael Flinn resigned as secretary due to his work schedule. Ora Lee Levien will serve. President Goehring expressed his appreciation to the outgoing officers for their time and efforts.

A reminder to bring the fraternal services worksheets to the next meeting so we can mail them to the Home Office by March 1. Worksheets for the new year were handed out.

Orville and Laverne Kunkel and Alfred and Gladys Baack will be on the food committee for the next three months.

For February and March, we will have our meal immediately after our 7 p.m. meeting. Games will follow the meal. We will have hot sandwiches for our February 12 meeting and members will bring desserts, chips, or relishes.

S.RJ.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor residents celebrate holidays The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 held their Christmas party on December 14 at 3 p.m. Mr. Woody Richards, Administrator, welcomed the guests and thanked everyone for coming. He then emceed the program.

Leona Stalmach and Catherine Holubec lead the group in some Christmas carols, while Winston Anderson, Raymond Tesmer, Joe Chovanec, and Ervin Heselmeyer accompanied them. Then, the group played some lively tunes until Santa Claus came to give out presents and candy to all the residents. Everyone enjoyed Santa giving extra hugs.

Refreshments of chicken salad sandwiches, chips, pickles, orange slice cake, apple strudel, cookies and red punch were served by Nita Seidenberger, Terry Pundsack, Lillian Fox, Leona Stalmach, Sarah Blockmore, Lillian Sakewitz, Joyce Patschke, Catherine Holubec, and Wayne Jacobs.

The residents were treated to a party on New Year's Ever The residents played bingo for extra prizes and extra money, donated by Mrs. Seidenberger.

The residents were then treated to some sausage and cheese, crackers., cheetoes, and sliced fruit cake, donated

by Mary Burke's family. Everyone toasted each other for the New Year with some wine or soft drinks.

Refreshments were served by Terry Pundsack, Lillian Fox, Leona Stalmach, Sarah Blockmore, Lillian Sakewitz, Norine Unash, Elsie Flink and Nita Seidenberger.

December Meeting The menu, which is planned by the residents monthly, for December was beef stew, lettuce and tomato salad, corn bread, and pineapple upside-down cake.

We discussed the Christmas parade and who ever wanted to go was to let Mrs. Kovar know right away. The Christmas party was set for December 14 at 3 p.m.

The signs are up in the lobby. We will have the same refreshments as last year.

Louise Kadlecek was dismissed to a nursing home in Houston, Texas. She will be missed by the staff and residents.

Father Ramsey, Milton Lengendre, and Annie Stavinoha with St. Michael's Catholic Church came to have mass on Thursday mornings. In the afternoon, the Catholic, Methodist, Immanuel, Damon Baptist ladies, and Presbyterian ladies took turns coming to have crafts.

On Tuesday evening, December 2, George Lolley, Larry Ognoski, and Fritz Koehne provided music and singing for the residents.

The Immanuel youth group provided caroling for the residents on Wednesday evening, December 3.

The Needville Middle School Honor Society provided caroling on Friday, December 5.

On Sunday evening, December 7, St. Michael's Altar Society brought cookies, punch and gifts.

The Needville FHA provided caroling on Tuesday evening, December 9.

Saturday morning, December 13, Anna Valle brought her ballet dancers for the residents.

St. Paul's youth :group and Cub Scouts came caroling on Sunday evening, December 14.

On Monday afternoon, December 15, Ed Pisklak provided music on the accordion.

Thursday afternoon, December 18, Garland Hurtye and Mary Goffinet with Fort Bend Humane Society

brought pets for pet therapy for the residents.

The residents Christmas party was Friday, December 19. The party consisted of entertainment by some of the sing-a-group. They provided very beautiful singing. The Jaycees provided Santa Claus and gave gifts to all residents. Meat trays, sandwiches, chips and dips, cakes, pies and cookies were served to all.

The singers from SPJST Lodge 88, Houston performed December 19 for the residents. They sang beautiful Czech and English songs.

The Jaycees provided the residents' dinner on Thursday, December 25 which consisted of turkey and dressing and all the trimmings.

The Birthday Party held Friday, December 26 included Louis Vacek entertaining on the accordion and piano. "A Flower and Gift Shop" provided the corsages. Cake, ice cream, punch, and coffee were served.

Birthdays for December were residents Thomas Kamas, Dorothy Sury, Esther Brinkmeyer, Bertha Kaack, Jean Johnson, Minnie Guenthe, and Daniella Peschel, and staff Linda Donald, Joyline Gaillery, Shirley Salka, Lee Morales, Sharon Taylor, and Amy Zela.

Thanks to all denominations of churches and to the volunteers that do services in the home for the residents.

29, Taylor Youth Club reports on January meeting Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, The January meeting of Lodge 29, Taylor was called to order at 5:45 p.m.

by President Chad Cervenka. Jeffrey Kelm led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The register was read. There were 18 members and 10 adults present.

Guests introduced were Amanda Wade and Katie Kaiser.

For our social we went to Lake Line Mall last Sunday. We had lots of fun.

Our Youth Leader talked about several things. She told us the changes in the 1998 rule book and we planned our socials until April. We talked about the annual skating party in February.

On February 8 before going skating, we are going to have a short meeting at 2:30 p.m. Club officers need to be at the hall at 2 p.m. to get things ready.

From there we are going to CiCi's to eat, and then skating.

The meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.

After the meeting we all made a valentine craft to hang on the tree at the rest home.

Santa Claus showed up from the North Pole with toys for all us good kids. We played games with the adults and gave out gifts to the older members. It is such a pleasure to see them smile. I look forward to next year and I hope you do too.

Classes resume at Sokol Houston Hall On Thursday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m., the Bernard Pivonka Czech language classes will resume at Sokol Hall, located at 1314 West Patton Street in Houston. We have two levels

of classes — beginning and advance.

The beginning classes are taught by a group of teachers: Brother Charlie Pavlicek, Sister Louise Keyes, and Sister Lillian Pivonka, so as to maximize the benefits of small group instruction and increased individual practice. The advanced class is taught

by Brother Alexander Vojta whose experience of having lived in the Czech Republic for a time gives added insight to his instruction.

Throughout the term, cultural opportunities and activities are frequently included as part of the classes. The classes are free of charge. It is the intent of these classes to not only teach the Czech language but to also celebrate and maintain the beautiful spectrum of Czech heritage which is better expressed and appreciated through an understanding of the Czech patois.

Mrs. Beck has experience in teaching Czech to English speaking foreigners in a foreign language school in Prague. Her teaching experience also includes tutoring and teaching Czech classes at UT Austin.

Members Rely on SPJST for Flexible Line of Insurance and Annuity Options "You hate to the to win" was the old say ing about life insurance. That saying is not true an y more. When the SPJST was organized, members bought life insurance to meet the immediate emergency needs at death. That concept, however, has expanded and changed over the years. Today, many members look to the SPJST for a flexible line of life insurance and financial products.

Term Insurance Of the two basic types of life insurance, term insurance premiums are the lowest because term insurance offers death protection only and is in effect for a limited period. For example, a member with a ten-year term certificate has protection for that ten-year period — not beyond. If the certificate is renewable, it may he extended for another period at a premium based on the new age. If not renewable, a new certificate may he purchased at the new rate, provided the certificate holder remains insurable.

cate to a permanent plan of insurance with a cash value.

Who t y pically bu ys term insurance?

This varies, of course; however, likely purchasers would be young couples starting new careers. When budget constraints prohibit purchasing the desired amount of cash value insurance, term insurance is often substituted. The term insurance provides them with a hi gh amount of protection at a low premium.

Another form of term insurance offered by the Society is the :SPJST Protector Plan" which is a joint decreasing-term certificate. The plan insures both the husband and wife. in one contract and is usually tailored to mortgage cancellation. The plan pays the proceeds at the time the first insured dies.

Whole Life Insurance As its name suggests, whole life insurance furnishes protection for the "whole life" of the purchaser, regardless of the premium-paying period.

Whole life insurance is often purchased not only as premature death protection but also as a vehicle for accumulating funds for emergencies and for retirement.

An SPJST whole life certificate also has a "cash value" that can be used to take advantage of business or investment opportunities, help defray your children's college costs or help build retirement income. Likewise, it offers guaranteed protection and guaranteed growth at a guaranteed price.

The fifth menu item listed above, "Universal Life," is something of a hybrid when it comes to insurance certificates. Basically it is an all-purpose, interest-sensitive plan designed to fit the widest range of needs.

Universal Life offers a level monthly premium with a level- or an increasingdeath benefit option. In addition, it offers the member an interest-sensitive cash value with a guaranteed rate of interest. The rate is currently 7 percent.

The accumulation of cash values are taxfree until distribution; likewise, death benefits are also exempt from taxation.

SPJST Annuities In addition to providing affordable insurance coverage to its members, the SPJST also offers a quality member benefit geared toward minimal risk with optimum gain — the SPJST Annuity.

The purpose of an SPJST annuity is to assure a person of an income which cannot be outlived. An SPJST annuity can also he qualified as an I.R.A. Selecting the right insurance plan for you and your family is an important decision and one that should never be entered into blindly. That's where an SPJST sales representative can help.
