State FAC requests input from senior members in addressing "Seniors Club" idea Dear Lodge Members, There are vast challenges to the fraternal lodge system as we enter the 21st century. If these challenges are to be solved, it will require the commitment of members to give of their mental and physical powers. This will involve "tapping the great mind of the SPJST"—the members, for their input and suggestions.

Recently, in a conversation with a member from the Dallas area, a wonderful suggestion was made. The suggestion concerned "the graying of America" and what we, the SPJST were going to do about it, if anything.

From this conversation arose the aspect of a Seniors Club for SPJST members ages 60 plus. This "club" would offer: • Group travel • Book reviews • Seminars on aging and health • Promote physical activities for seniors

• Election of officers for the club • Volunteer positions for seniors in the community • Arts and crafts • Promotion of Czech language and heritage at events • Promoting Czech heritage to younger generations To get a project such as this off the ground for the first several years would take a tremendous interest on volunteers' part. To begin the research and the setup of this program, we need a positive response from at least 50 SPJST lodges, by June 1, 1998, that our members are interested in the Seniors Clubs.

Readers may request Tarok rules from SPJST Home Office Please help me locate a copy of the rules for Tarocky as played by us Czechs in the various tournaments that that I see covered in the Vestnik. My brother and I know the basic rules as taught by our father, but he died about four years ago and we do not remember how to count the cards after someone has gone pre y-air. Mainly when the count is doubled or tripled when the individual who goes pre y-air takes the first three cards from the middle, or the second three cards or goes back to the first three cards. Also what happens when someone gives the individual who has the privilege of going first, contrey?

My brother and his two daughters love to play the game as well as I do but we would like to be able to play it correctly as we have been guessing at this.

If you can point me in the right direction as to where I can get a copy of the rules it would be greatly appreciated.

United States Army and am stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia. arrived here on November 4, 1997, after four months of basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia.

James Svetlik I am in the Infantry, and everyday is a challenge as we practice maneuvers we will need to know in a combat environment.

That is what we do, we train and train to hone our skills, to gain the knowledge we need to kill. That may sound had and gruesome, but we do this to defend our country and keep us free.

It is different being away from home, family, and friends, although I have already began to see some of the world. Charlie Company 3-7 Infantry, which is the unit I am associated with, went to Egypt for two weeks to guard a warehouse. The plane ride was long but well worth it. We flew to Paris and switched planes that then took us to Egypt. Didn't see much of Paris because we just switched planes, but in Egypt I was fortunate enough to see the Great Sphinx and many pyramids.

It was quite an experience. You find out traditions and culture of the places you go. For instance, it is an Egyptian tradition for Egyptian men to hold hands as a sign of their friendship. We were all astounded until we found out why they did it, and then our minds were at ease.

I am a dismount/driver on an MZAZ BFV (Bradley Fighting Vehicle). That is a transport carrier that takes troops to where they need to be to finish a mission. It looks sort of like an Army tank. Like I said, every day is something new. I enjoy it and take it one day at a time.

Fraternally, Joe Siptak District Six President —SPJSTpackage were over 25 Christmas cards from my friends at Lodge 4, Hallettsville as well as District Six representatives and other lodges. I want to personally thank everyone who took the time to write me a few lines. It touched me to know that everyone back home is still thinking of me. You all made my first Christmas away from home easier. The letters expressed how everyone missed me, was proud of me for defending our country, wishing me a merry Christmas and a happy new year, and wishing me a safe return. This showed me that the SPJST takes care and thinks of its members wherever they are. I learned a lot from the SPJST and can't wait to get involved when I get out. One card said, "Sure miss your smiling face around the lodge. — Albert and Margaret Smotek." Well, I've always been happy and am happier knowing everyone cares and are keeping me in their prayers.

Lodge 1, Fayetteville members enjoy Christmas party SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville held its annual Christmas party with the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce at the SPJST hall in Fayetteville on Sunday, December 14, 1997, at 5:30 p.m. The children sang Christmas carols and Santa visited with the children noting all the things they wanted him to bring for Christmas. He also gave them gifts.

Members and guests enjoyed a delicious buffet which consisted of baked turkey and ham, a large selection of vegetables, homemade bread and scrumptious desserts, tea and coffee.

Door prizes consisting of SPJST cookbooks, lickskillet koozies, and Christmas table arrangements were presented to the adults.

A quarterly meeting of Lodge 1 was held and the same 1997 slate of officers and directors were elected for 1998. Members were advised that a check in the amount of $500 was presented to the Fayetteville EMS Building Fund at a recent Fayetteville City Council Meeting. A motion was also made and approved to give $35 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Santa listens attentively as children present him with their holiday requests.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on member activities, January 25 benefit at Tours hall Dear Readers, Happy New Year everyone! Hope everyone had wonderful holidays.

Our lodge has turned in their pennies for the scholarship fund. We thank everyone that contributed to it; the amount was great. At our next meeting, we will distribute our donations to our local organizations. We will be sending out formal invitations to them.

Speaking of wonderful holidays— here in the West area, there were several families that had a sad Christmas due to a terrible accident in the Gerald area near Leroy, Texas. Two of our younger members of Lodge 6, Edward Hykel and Paul Lenart and a friend Boonie Witt, were severely hurt in a truck and stock trailer accident. They are slowly recuperating. Paul Lenart is at home, but the others are in the hospital. There will be a benefit for them at the Tours hall on Sunday, January 25 with a meal and an auction. Donations are being accepted to help with the medical expenses.

In the November meeting, Paul Lenart was presented the Therese Dobecka Memorial Scholarship. We hope Edward Hykel will get to come home also so he can recuperate with his wife and children at his side.

Lodge 20, Granger elects '98 officers a December meeting The members of SPJST Lodge 20, Granger held their Christmas party and annual meeting on Sunday, December 7 at the lodge hall.

The meeting was called to order by President Leslie Loessin. We stood for a moment of silence for Joe Batla who passed away.

The 50-year members were honored. Those present were Alice Langenegger, Georgie Naizer, Vlasta Volcik, Johnnie Volcik, and Johnny Roepke.

We enjoyed having our Vestnik editor Brian Vanicek as our special guest.

Our lodge had our 100 Pennies Annual Scholarship Drive.

The tarok tournament was held at our lodge hall on Saturday, December 6. It was a great turn out and everyone had a good time. We want to thank everyone who helped work and to Rudy Hajda who was in charge. All officers were reelected for the coming year. Lodge 32, Victoria Polkafest set for February 8 at Inez Community Center Our Christmas party on December 10 was enjoyed by all who attended. There were three "of us regulars" that did not get to make it, but I understand it was great seeing those who cannot make the meetings on a regular basis. So along with the great food at Maggie's, there was great fraternalism — what better way to start the holiday season!

In the spirit of Christmas, our very own Santa, Adolf Motal, delivered poinsettias to the "seniors" of Lodge 32. Since everyone knows Adolf, I am sure they were as excited about his visit as they were the poinsettias! We are grateful that he can do this each year, just as he brings in new members each year. A big thanks to Adolf!

Polkafest set for February 8 Make plans to attend our Polkafest on February 8 at the Inez Community Center. The doors open at 11 a.m. The dance is from 1 to 7 p.m. with music

by Vrazel's Polka Band and Bobby Jones Czech Band. The snack bar will he open and a stew meal will be available. Remember, Inez has that hardwood dance floor and admission is $6 per person. Come and join us — bring a friend!

We have had several members "under the weather" recently and we wish them all a speedy recovery.

47, Seaton reports on January meeting and committee assigments Lodge

It has been several years since I have had the privilege of reporting to the Vestnik, so please bear with me (especially the Editor)!

Our first meeting of the year was January 4 and started out very wet.

President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. Flag Bearers Amber Pechal and Rachel Baca brought in the flags and led the members in the pledge to the United States flag. A moment of silence was observed in memory of deceased members, Annabelle Chlapek, Ladis Vrazel, and Frank Dukatnik. May they rest in eternal peace.

President Pechal welcomed everyone to the meeting. Visitors were Freddie Schroeder and Rosa Lee Pechal. Outgoing Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the December, 1997 minutes.

President Pechal turned the meeting over to District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky who installed the new officers and board of trustees for 1998. He congratulated the new officers and trustees and also the outgoing ones for a job well done. President Pechal also thanked the outgoing secretary Dolores Skrabanek for her many years of service and dedication for a job well done.

This report (and secretary) has some mighty big shoes to fill in 1998.

Dolores needed a rest and will continue working at the lodge, I'm sure.

Roll call of officers and trustees were read by Secretary Adeline Kohutek. All were present. Sales Representatives absent were Vallie Zavodny and Robert Heese.

Correspondence consisted of a thankyou note from the Annabelle Chlapek family and the Clarence Sula family.

Also a letter from District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky and District Two FAC Ruth Hanusch was received pertaining to a dance program for members ages 3 to 17 to begin in the Temple area.

New members accepted into our membership were Salvador Becko, Bradford Robert Kraatz, Eldon Jerome Zavodny, Casey Jewell Crews, Claudia Lynn Speers, and Rosa Lee Pechal (who was also present and welcomed as a new member). We invite all the new members to attend our meetings and other functions.

Joyce Skrabanek had sent a get-well card to Frank E. Hejl. Please let Joyce or any of the officers know if our members are in the hospital for whatever reason so a card can be sent. We don't know if you do not let us know.

Tarok Tournament this Saturday The Winter Tarok Tournament will be held Saturday, January 17 at Lodge 47, Seaton. Playing starts at 9 a.m.

Sweets for the noon meal will be appreciated.

All officers and chairpersons gave their reports. Youth Leader Donna Baca gave her report: 10 members, five visitors and two adults were present.

All Lodge 47 youth are encouraged to come to the youth club. If you are not a member, a sales representative can make you a member. The youth will have a social the last Sunday in January.

Edwin Vasicek read the board minutes. He also announced there are still tickets available for our fund raiser on Saturday, March 7. If you need a ticket, call Edwin or any officer. He also reminded members to donate items for the silent auction and sweets for the meal to be served at the fund raiser.

FAC Dorothy Pechal announced there will not be family night this month because of the tarok tournament the next day. She also asked members to keep up with their fraternal work.

79, Corpus Christi members enjoy Christmas activities, elect '98 officers Lodge

The Christmas party held on Sunday, December 14 turned out very nice. The Sokol gymnasts performed for the program. Then, Sokol President Norma Baker presented year pins to members, several who are also SPJST members. Sorry to say, I did not get their names.

Everyone enjoyed the covered dish supper. There sure was a good variety of all kinds of food and plenty of it, too. After supper, Santa made his appearance to the delight of the youngsters. He gave a bag of candy to all who were present.

Annual Meeting Report On Sunday, December 21, the Lodge 79 annual meeting was called to order just after 2 p.m. by President Jerry Sijansky. All sang "Happy Birthday" to Sister Millie Elzner and Sister Carrie Veselka, both having December birthdays. On the sick list was Brother Victor Juff who had

surgery and was doing all right. We send him get-well wishes. Secretary Jill Sijansky read the minutes of the October and November meetings.

They were accepted after some minor corrections. The financial report was given by Treasurer Millie Elzner and was accepted as given.

Acting FAC Jerry Elzner said the Thanksgiving dinner in November turned out very good. The canned goods collected were given to charities and the $65 collected was sent to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund. He said Lodge 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi hosted a covered dish supper for visiting members of the Veselanka Band, who enjoyed the social with a large group of members. He said that he sent a letter and form for fraternal activities to members who do not regularly attend meetings and he has been getting replies from some. He reminded members that it is important to bring their list of fraternal activities as soon as possible.

District Seven State Field Representative Jim Wiest congratulated Lodge 79 for a good year. He reminded us that we already have 19 new 'policies and needed just a few more to make the gold award. Brother Jerry Sijansky was congratulated for being the top producer for two months. He is our lodge's newest sales representative. Keep it up, Brother Jerry!

There was one new policy: Brother Frank L. Sacky took out a new policy.

He has been a member for many years.

The $50 donation for December went to the Corpus Christi Children's Christmas Appeal, a very worthy organization.

Then, it was time for the election of officers for 1998. Vice President Anna Marie Moss presided for the election of president, who then presided for the rest of the election.

Reelected by acclamation were: President Jerry Sijansky Vice President Anna Marie Moss Secretary Jill Sijansky Treasurer Millie Elzner FAC Jerry Elzner The next meeting will be held on Sunday, January 18, when the officers will be installed.

Appointed to serve on the Resolution Committee are Sister Helen Pavelka, Sister Anna Maire Moss, and Sister Edna Voldan.

Brother Jerry Elzner suggested having a welcome committee. After some discussion, it was decided that all members who come to meetings act as welcome committee.

The reporter for 1998 stays the same. No one else wanted the job so you will be hearing from me. Hope to keep you posted on all the activities going on.

The door prizes were donated by Brother Jerry Elzner. Thanks, Brother Jerry. The lucky winners were Jill Sijansky, Ann Curry, and Jim Wiest.

Remember, the next meeting is coming on Sunday, January 18, 1998, at 2 p.m. to be followed by the usual svacina and social, which everyone seems to enjoy.

Lodge 81, Needville members enjoy holiday festivities at December meeting and social It was a gorgeous day outside; and inside, the atmosphere was just as lovely. This was Sunday, December 21, 1997, the day of our meeting. As time went on, the crowd swelled to a total of 77 members and guests. You could definitely tell it was Christmastime.

The SPJST hall was decorated and in front of the stage was the Christmas tree. There were so many attendance prizes brought that the table surrounding the Christmas tree was completely full. On another table were bags of fruit, nuts, and candy. The smell of the oranges and apples filled the air.

Thanks to Benita Walzel and Winnie Susan for preparing the Christmas bags and to the Adolph Macha's for decorating the tree and the hall. Then the sound of Christmas music and other songs were played by Louis Havelka on the guitar and Fritz Koehne on the accordion. Also, Robert Kuban played some songs on the accordion. Guys, you sounded great. When some of the Czech songs were played, many of the people in attendance began singing.

Let's do this again when Christmas time comes.

For a change, weatherwise, it was wonderful. In the past years, when we had our December meeting and party, it rained and rained—but not this time. It was rumored those years that Santa had to come in a boat. Thanks to the man above for providing us with this nice day.

As usual, the people began to arrive around 11 a.m. Darlene Blinka had the delicious pot of coffee brewing. At 12 noon, the meal was ready to be served.

President Macha led us in grace before we sat down to eat. On the menu were baked ham and sausage. Thanks to Darlene Blinka and Emma Kujawa for preparing the ham and also thanks to Alvin and Darlene Blinka and Johnnie and Emma Kujawa for donating the hams. The lodge provided the sausage.

There was a vast assortment of vegetables, salads, and desserts to choose from to accompany the meal. Thanks to all who brought the tasty side dishes.

At 1 p.m., President Macha called the meeting to order. Miranda Wiles led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Thanks, Miranda, and for all of your other help. All officers were present for roll call. Willie Mae Kuykendall, our secretary, read the minutes from the previous meeting. A few minor wordings were added to the minutes and then they were approved.

Our treasurer Benita Walzel presented the monthly financial report which was accepted as read. Gilbert Walzel, the Special Fund Chairman, began with giving us the schedule of events for the hall for the upcoming month. He then gave his report which was met with approval.

Since our last meeting, we are sorry to report the death of two of our members. They are Robert Allen Zemanek of Houston and Freddie Kocurek of Wallis. Freddie is the brother-in-law of Emma and Johnnie Kujawa. A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed brothers. May Robert and Freddie rest in peace.

New names added to the sick list are Adolph Posteka and Marvin Hurta. It was reported that Marvin had a triple by-pass surgery. The others that remain on the sick list are Bernie Tielke, Jerry Blinka, Rosie Schwettmann, Gladys Maresh, Bill Miller, Emil Pollock, and Adeline Bacica. Get-well wishes are sent to everyone.

In the correspondence department, Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read a letter from the National Alliance of Czech Catholics. The lodge decided not to make a donation to this organization. Then Gilbert Walzel read a letter from the Needville Little League Association about sponsorship. The lodge voted to donate $250 for the baseball activities of this youth organization.

President Macha reported that he delivered five dozen oranges and five dozen apples to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville.

Kristy Jablonski is the granddaughter of Alvin and Darlene Blinka; Orin Stammann is the grandson of Eddie and Rosie Lee Pieper; Sandra Wright is the daughter of Willie Mae Kuykendall; and Derek and Audie Wright are Willie Mae's grandsons.

Guests at the meeting included Georgie and Fritz Koehne of Needville (Jeanette Newman's parents); Doris Witek (wife of Willie Witek); Louis Hanus of Houston (our District Five Director); David, Donna and Brittany Pesak (members of the Charlie Pesak family); Todd Shilk of College Station (grandson of Ivory Shilk); Rosemary Pieper (daughter of the Eddie Piepers); Leah Stammann (granddaughter of the Eddie Piepers); and Caleb, Jacob and Hannah Wright (grandchildren of Willie Mae Kuykendall). We were delighted to have each and every one of you and our hope is that you will come back often. You are always welcome.

The lodge gave ten $5 prizes for the Christmas meeting. Winners were Rosie Lee Pieper, Albert (Brooks) Stavinoha, Leah Stammann, Jeanette Barnes, Ami Horky, Rosemary Pieper, Jay Horky, Robert Polasek, Emma Kujawa, and Vincent Newman. Hope you enjoyed your Christmas bonus.

Our District Five Director joined us for dinner, the meeting, and our party.

Mr. Louis Hanus spoke to us about some of the matters pertaining to the SPJST, such as interest rates, the insurance representatives, and incentive awards. Louis also installed the officers of the lodge for 1998. Thanks, Louis, for performing this act for us and also thanks for the beautiful calendars you always give us. It was good to see you and we hope you can make many of our 1998 meetings. To the officers, thanks for accepting your position and keep up the good work.

Emma and Johnnie Kujawa donated a container of Christmas candy, but in order to win it you had to put your thinking cap on. You had to guess the number of candies in the container.

Little Miss Leah ended up winning the candy. Congratulations, Leah, and thanks to the Kujawas for the guessing game.

The meeting was now over and it was time for the next event to happen.

Soon there was a knock at the back door and who should appear—no one else but dear ole Santa! Louis Havelka played the guitar and with Willie Mae Kuykendall's help, we sang Christmas carols. Those who had their lists ready spoke to Santa. After visiting with the people, Santa then had to leave because he had a very busy schedule ahead of him. Santa, we want to thank you for coming by and please mark your calendar for the third Sunday in December so that you can be with us again. It was so good to see Santa again.

Does everyone have their new calendar for 1998? I know if you were at the meeting, you have one. Your next assignment is to go through your calendar and mark the third Sunday of each month to read "Don't forget SPJST Meeting." There were excellent turnouts at all of our meetings during the 1997 year, but you know what?

We are going to do better yet this year.

We need your help by coming to the meetings.

We hope the Christmas season was a wonderful and blessed time for each of you and that all of you were with your families. Weatherwise, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were beautiful.

Speaking of weather, it became wicked in our neighborhood on December 23. At our place, a tornado picked up our carport and landed it behind the house about 125 feet from its original location. The carport was completely demolished. As the carport traveled over the house, it did extensive damage to the roof. There were two cars parked under the carport and they received no damage. There were about 20 potted plants between the cars, but they were not moved at all.

Also, a lot of electrical damage was done outside. The wind was ferocious.

Further down the road, another carport was demolished. It was bad, but we thank God he spared our lives and our home.

It seems as though every other person you meet is sick. The flu bug is really making people feel miserable.

Take those aspirins and drink plenty of fluids and hope everyone feels better.

We want everyone to start the New Year feeling great.

Next Meeting January 18 The first meeting of the New Year will be on Sunday, January 18, 1998, at the lodge hall. On the menu will be baked and fried chicken. Dinner is served at 12 noon followed by the meeting at 1 p.m. We hope your New Year's resolution was to attend as. many SPJST meetings as possible.

The set up remains the same. Ladies, you are asked to bring a vegetable or salad and a dessert. Invite your friends to come along.

President Clara Broz opened the meeting at 11:05 p.m.

Gene Barcak and Margaret Allbritton of the Rules and Regulations Committee presented changes to the rules and regulations committee which were read and voted on individually. A copy of all changes will be on permanent file with the minutes.

The Remunerations Committee presented their recommendations for officers and secretary-treasurer. In addition to the Platinum Award Party, two committee and workers parties will be held in 1998. Committee members were Clara Broz, Willie Wehring, Ben Hogan, Marceil Malak, Viola Cox and Jeff Barcak. A motion to accept recommendations was made and seconded. The motion carried.

Announcements Margaret Allbritton announced the Red and Whites will have a dance on January 11 from 2 to 6 p.m. The Travelers will play and the kitchen will be open. Admission is $6 per person.

Marian Kadlecek dedicated her million dollar insurance sales to her later mother, Della Kadlecek, who was also a sales representative.

The lunch break was at 11:25 a.m. and the meeting reconvened at 1:10 p.m.

A memorial service was held remembering all deceased members for 1997. As the names were read by Jo Ann Buri, our Fraternalist of the Year Bennie Kocich lit the candles. Marie Stayton read a moving poem, and Donna Merkel accompanied Helen Hegwood in song.

Committee Reports Board of Trustees — This year the Board worked very well together with many accomplishments.

Social Night Chairman Willie Wehring stated the last night of the 1997 season will be December 18.

Turkeys will be given away and then a two-week vacation was due to Christmas and New Year's Day. President Broz asked for any other committee reports. There being none, she preceded to the report of officers.

First Vice President Marie Stayton wished everyone a happy and holy season.

President Clara Broz commented on the many friendships she made throughout the year and thanked everyone for their support.

There were 152 members present.

Door prizes were won by Donna Merkel, Betty Theiss, Larry Pflughaupt, Ann Urbanovsky, Mary Kosut. Additional prizes were won by Melanie Spies, King Hegwood, Cindy Havemann, Don Spies, Viola Cox, D.J. Motal and Alvin Hollas.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 3:05 p.m.

91, Crosby members enjoy annual meeting, Christmas party Lodge

Lodge 91, Crosby held its fourth quarterly meeting on December 13, 1997, at the American Legion Hall in Crosby. This meeting was held in conjunction with the annual Christmas party. Those attending were all officers and approximately 60 members and guests. Honoree guests were District Five Fraternal Activities Coordinator Fred Buri and wife, Jo Ann; Helen Hegwood and husband, King; and Evelyn Mikeska.

The meeting was called to order by President Franta, and the pledge to the flag was said.

Lodge 161, La Parita Jourdanton reports on December meeting On December 14, 1997, President Milton Koch called the Lodge 161 meeting to order with a welcome to all.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said by 15 members present.

Sister Leona Pivonka was sick in Virginia. She and Vince went for a wedding in the family and she had to be hospitalized with double pneumonia and missed the festivities. We will keep her in our prayers. Her sister, Sister. Vlasta Zuhlke, said they are hoping to be back in Jourdanton by the next Saturday.

Sister Vlasta Zuhlke gave the table prayer and we adjourned for a delicious turkey lunch with dressing, gravy, potato salad, green beans, bread and cranberry sauce. Our meal was prepared by Sister Lucy Zepeda and

Sister Tillie Koch. Thank you, ladies.

It was delicious! Desserts and tea and coffee were furnished by members.

Minutes from our November meeting were read by Sister Tillie Koch.

One correction — Sister Gussie Spacek did not win a door prize at the Fall District Meeting in Floresville; she and Ernest did not attend. But Sister Frances Kovar, Brother Lloyd House and Brother Valdo Benitez won door prizes. Sorry for the goof!

FAC Donald Valchar was absent because of work. Reporter Virginia Valchar sat in for him and told members to please turn in their Fraternal Services Worksheets by February 1, 1998. New business to discuss was Sister Reporter Virginia Valchar stating she and Brother Donald Valchar, FAC, would not accept 1998 nominations for reporter and vice president. Sister Betty House motioned to separate the secretary/treasurer position, seconded

by Lloyd House. The motion failed.

The secretary/treasurer officer will stay as one.

New officers were elected and they are: President Milton Koch Vice President Lucy Zepeda Secretary/Treasurer Tillie Koch Reporter Betty House Congratulations to the new Lodge 161 officers for 1998. Good luck! The installation of officers will be at our January 11 meeting.

All 1998 Lodge 161 meetings will be at the Jourdanton State Bank at 3 p.m. Our March, June, September, and December meetings will be at 12 noon.

President Koch said since all caterers are so high and it is hard to find one that will cater to small organizations, he suggested cold cuts for our quarterly meetings. Sister Vlasta Zuhlke made a motion that we try those for the March meeting and see how it goes, seconded

by Brother Lloyd House. The motion passed.

The financial report was given by Secretary/Treasurer Tillie Koch.

Brother Lloyd House asked how much money our lodge had given away for 1997 and if we could afford to give a small money donation to A.C.C.E.P.T along with our canned goods donation.

Brother Lloyd House made a motion to give $25 and it was seconded by Sister Betty House. The motion carried.

Our January 11, 1998, meeting will be at 3 p.m. at the Jourdanton State Band. Please attend!

Auditors picked for 1998 are Brother Vince Pivonka, Sister Vlasta Zuhlke, and Sister Dorothy Pivonka.

Thank you, Sister Betty House, for bringing the peanut brittle. Members had to guess how many peanuts were in the jar of brittle. Sister Dorothy Bryant guessed 125; there were 122.

Sister Dorothy won the jar of brittle.

Door prizes were won by Sister Francis Kovar, Brother Valdo Benitez and Brother Henry Mann.

President Koch thanked everyone for the great food, desserts, and drinks.

The Christmas decorations were brought by sisters Georgia Tupy, Libbie Wiesniewski, and Alice Roberts.

Charles Kosarek, husband of sister Lillie Kosarek, spent several days in the hospital. He went home before Christmas. We wish him a speedy recovery. He said that he will be at our next meeting: Each of the officers and committee persons received $5 and cookies from the Circle. That was nice.

Sister Hattie Moucka's granddaughter, Kimberly Woods, graduated from Baylor University's School of Nursing.

She is a registered nurse and will be working at Baylor Hospital in Ennis, Texas. Her parents and grandmother Hattie must be very proud of her.

Wesley Tupy, husband of sister Vallie Tupy, brother of us seven Tupy sisters, Anne, Mary, Mildred, Georgia, Libbie, Alice, and Agnes, also father of Milton Tupy and father-in-law of sister Anne Tupy, celebrated his 87th birthday on the farm at sister Georgia

with Dr. John J. Bravenec and the Rev. Frank A. Simcik officiating.

She died Wednesday, December 17, 1997, in a Temple hospital.

Mrs. Chlapek was born in Double Header community to Joe F. and Rosie Mikulas Bartek. She attended the Komensky School. She married Jerry D. Chlapek on October 31, 1929, in Temple. She was a housewife and worked in food service at the Lost Prairie School. They also owned and operated the Chlapek Grocery in Ratibor.

She was a charter member of the Tupy's home. Our cousins Mary Kubacak, Doris Foit, and Adele Cikanek were there also. We had a great time.

Back to our meeting, almost forgot that we had a good lunch, exchanged gifts and enjoyed a good fellowship with everyone.

My Pet Story..

Some business offices are allowing their employees to bring their pets to work with them and they stay all day. I wonder how it works out. At least, they don't have to worry about them being at home. Maybe President Clinton takes his new dog Buddie (or is it Buddy?) to his office.

We will not have a meeting in January. Our next meeting will be February 12, 1998. See you then.

Braschler Music Show coming to Groesbeck The Kosse Lions Club is again sponsoring the Braschler Music Show on Friday, February 12, 1998, at the Groesbeck High School Auditorium in Groesbeck. The show, a premiere attraction from Branson, Missouri, features a blend of gospel, comedy, and country music.

Because of high attendance at past shows, this year there will be two performance times, one at 4 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m. Each performance will be entirely different from the other, so many Braschler fans will want to attend both.

Tickets are on sale at a cost of $10 per person for each show, or $17.50 per person if attending both shows.

Special rates are available for groups.

All seats are reserved and are assigned on a first come, first served basis.

The Kosse Lions Club is also hosting a spaghetti supper from 5:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at the Groesbeck High School Cafeteria. Tickets for the supper are on sale for $5 per person with advance purchase, and $6 per person at the door.

Survivors are Ace L. and Nancy Chlapek of Temple and Dwaine L. and Brenda Chlapek of Austin; a sister, Binnie Mikeska of Temple; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry D. Chlapek, and a son, Jerry D. Chlapek, Jr. Also preceding her in death were eight sisters and two brothers.

Expression of Sympathy

Alfred B. Colwell, 82, of Taylor, died Monday, January 5, 1998, at Johns Community Hospital.

He was born November 9, 1915, in Orange, Texas, and was a resident of the Taylor area for the past 20 years.

A veteran of WWII, he was a chief boatswain's mate in the Sea Bees, serving with the 37th Special Navy Construction Battalion at Pearl Harbor.

He retired as fire chief at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio after 30 years of service.

He was a member of the American Legion for 50 years. He was also a member of the SPJST Lodge, Catholic Life, and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylor.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Colwell of Taylor; daughters, Ann Brown of Chesapeake, Virginia, Carol Springs and husband, Slim of Friendswood; stepdaughter, Barbara Griffin and husband, Jerry of Abilene; four grandchildren, Ray Brown, Julie Keenan, Anna Springs, and Aaron Springs; three step-grandchildren, Robert, Regina, and Ryan Griffin; and two sisters, Ople Crowell and Dorothy Monroe, both of Luling.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary was at 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 7 at Condra Memorial Chapel in Taylor.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m.

Thursday, January 8, 1998, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Taylor with the Rev. Lonnie Urban officiating.

Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dr. Jerry Griffin, Leo Tiller, Jay Crowell, Ben Mikolaj, Bryan Nickells, and Frank Kohoutek.

JOSEPH WESLEY "COTTON" KARTOUS, who passed away on December 25, 1997, at the age of 86. He was a 37year member of the church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church, and also a member of SPJST Lodge 84 and Carpenters Union No. 429. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed as a cabinet maker by Sanger Harris, Freeman Decorating, Neiman Marcus and Standard Showcase.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Kartous; daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Lynn and Dennis Henderson, Kay and Bob Burns, Dan'l and Richard Simpson; eight grandchildren; sister Marie Kowal; and nieces Jeanne Hall and Tommie Clark.

Services were held on December 27, 1997, at Grove Hill Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Richard Carlisle officiating. Interment was at Grove Hall Memorial Park.

New national competition taps students' curiosity and creativity Giving young people what they say they want, namely more handson science experiences outside the classroom and in their communities, is the focus of a new national competition. The Bayer/NSF Award for Community Innovation is affording middle school students the opportunity to experience science the way real scientists do and make their communities better places at the same time.

The competition challenges teams of sixth, seventh and eighth graders to use their curiosity and creativity to identify a problem affecting their community and propose solutions using the scientific method. Teams are judged on their ability to analyze the problem, explore solutions, draw a conclusion and test its validity — all part of the scientific process.

In its pilot year, some of the problems included dust pollution from construction sites in the Las Vegas desert; an underutilized school facility in New Jersey; and growing dependency on fossil fuel in Boulder, Colo. The solutions? A dust detector that notifies workers when dust levels are high; a court-

yard developed into a living, breathing science laboratory and art studio for students; and a modernized version of the classic windmill that provides clean, renewable energy from wind power.

Deadline: January 31

For the 1997-98 competition, the deadline for entries is January 31, 1998. Next April, judges will review entries, and 10 finalist teams will be selected to receive a weeklong, allexpenses-paid trip to EPCOT Center in Orlando. During the week, teams will participate in the Christopher Columbus Academy, a unique educational experience that fosters the spirit of scientific discovery and technological innovation as students work side by side with experts in science, technology and education.

Prizes include $20,000 in savings bonds (first place); $12,000 in savings bonds (second place); and $4,000 in savings bonds (third place). As a special prize, one of the 10 teams will receive a $25,000 grant to further develop its idea in the community.

187, Round Rock Youth Club enjoys putt-putt golf social Lodge

Our monthly meeting was January 4, 1998, at Putt-Putt Golf in Round Rock.

We had six members and three adults present. We had a good time playing golf and eating ice cream. We played video games and got lots of tickets to get prizes with.

CZECH HERITAGE AND CULTURE

Bernard Pivonka Czech Classes resume at Sokol Houston Hall On Thursday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m., the Bernard Pivonka Czech language classes will resume at Sokol Hall, located at 1314 West Patton Street in Houston. We have two levels of classes — beginning and advance.

The beginning classes are taught by a group of teachers: Brother Charlie Pavlicek, Sister Louise Keyes, and Sister Lillian Pivonka, so as to maximize the benefits of small group instruction and increased individual practice. The advanced class is taught

by Brother Alexander Vojta whose experience of having lived in the Czech Republic for a time gives added insight to his instruction.

Throughout the term, cultural opportunities and activities are frequently included as part of the classes.

The classes are free of charge. It is the intent of these classes to not only teach the Czech language but to also celebrate and maintain the beautiful spectrum of Czech heritage which is better expressed and appreciated through an understanding of the Czech patois.
