The key, as in any business, is to be alert to the changes around you, to anticipate their impact on your lodge and members and, then to respond. Just as many businesses have had to rede­ fine themselvesover the last generation, so too must we. What need is the local lodge in your community filling; what value are you bringing to the communi­ ty? The New Yearprovides us with an excellent time to think about, discuss andplan for ourfuture.

One of the things that I've always liked about our local lodges is their flexibility to define what their role in the local community is going to be.

For instance, if your members want to focus on a heritage and cultural agenda, that's up to you. On the other hand, if your lodge wants to focus on assisting the community with various com­ munity service programs, that's up to you, too. A lot of options are open to you.

In spite of all their marketing and technological expertise, the SONY company really can't read the future. The best that they or any of us can really do is to plan for it. That is, in essence, what we are doing when we become members of SPJST. We can be justifiably proud of what we have achieved in our first 100 years as a Society. Now, as we begin our sec­ ond century, let's make it a priority to explore other new opportunities for growth and development. Let's focus on where we want our lodges and fra­ ternal order to go and then work to make it happen.

In spite of the competition, the SPJST possesses a competitive edge.

It's the human element. The stimula­ tion that comes from being with people whose company you enjoy is hard to beat. It can also provide us with an edge in the marketing and sales area.

Bringing people together is what a fra­ ternal benefit society is all about.

Establishing financial security and a sense of community naturally follows.

SONY, the electronics manufactur­ ing giant, is running one of the most eye-catching two-page magazine advertisements that I've seen in a long time. The first page shows a black­ and-white close-up of two mischievous little boys standing back to back. One appears to be about five years old and the other, maybe seven. The accompa­ nying text reads: Theirgrandfathersfought over toy trucks.

Theirfathers fought over electric trains.

Theyfight over the remote.

What will their kidsfight over?

In a very en­ dearing way, the advertisement illustrates the age­ ol d saying that "change is con­ stant." Something else that the adver­ tisement projects is that the SONY company plans to be here for the next generation for when you turn the page, you see a photo and write-up of SONY's latest product - a tiny, hand-held cellular phone that enables the user to do everything from make phone calls to send faxes and e-mail.

Progressive companies like SONY embrace change. They know that they must generate new business if they are to stay in business. They are constant­ ly thinking and innovating to ensure that their products and services will be relevant to the next generationof users.

We in the SPJST must be willing to do the same if we want to ensure the future growth and development of our Society. That raises an obvious ques­ tion: Whose job is it to innovate? The easy answer is to say, "That's the Supreme Lodge's job - let them han­ dle it." That isn't a bad answer; how­ ever, it can be expanded. Each of us as members of our democratic Society - can get involved in the process of building an SPJST for the 21st Century.

Whether it's thinking up the ideas or being open-minded to considering them, we can all work to ensure that the SPJST remains a dynamic force well into the next millennium.

Imagine the possibilities. It's the year 2008 and your local lodge is the most popular place in the community.

What did it take to get there? Before you answer that question, answer this one: Moving at your present pace, does that seem like a possibility? If it does, great. You're on the right track.

If it doesn't, the first step is to plot realistic and measurable membership and activity goals for your lodge. With commitment, planning and dedicated members,[raternalism works.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville presents city with $500 grant for new fire station On December l O at the regular meeting of the Fayetteville City Council, Louis J. Polansky, President of SPJST Lodge 1, presented a check to Ronald Pflughaupt, mayor of Fayetteville, in the amount of $500 as a contributing grant to the construction of a new fire station and city hall in the 'City of Fayetteville.

Lodge 1 has always been involved with civic pro­ jects in the town of Fayetteville.

In 1932, the SPJST Lodge 1 paid for the plans of the town clock which is on top of the Fayetteville Precinct Courthouse.

Recently, Lodge 1 also donated $500 to the Fayetteville Area Heritage Museum and reimbursed the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce $500 for the maintenance of the SPJST hall and grounds. Lodge l continues to

This amounts to a 50 percent savings over participation in· comparable dance programs. The deadline to register for class is January 9. Early registration is encouraged!

Also, Sister Kelner took care of getting the "goodie" bags ready. She and daughter youth member Sister Jessica put in hours of work to get everything ready.

Lodge 29, Taylor .eíects 1998 officers at December meeting President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order at 3 p.m. The mem­ bers stood for the pledge. Janet Kaiser read the minutes and gave the treasur­ er's report. Donna Pasemann gave the FAC report. Mike Kaiser gave a report on the Super Bowl Party. He said the raffle tickets are printed and are ready for sale.

Albin Machu was given an appreci­ ation gift for all of his sales for the lodge in the past year. He had 19 new members accepted into the lodge for December.

Albin Machu gave a report on the neon signs for the south side of the hall. He also gave a report on the upcoming New Year's Eve dance.

Carol Tallas gave the youth club report and also gave out the door prizes. An Interesting Proposal On November 12, 1997, when the Blue Crowns took a break from their performance atlodge 29, Taylor, about 150 people witnessed a marriage proposal from Tommy Joe Schiller of Taylor to Tempest Rose Faulkner of Waco.

They plan to be married in 1998 with a honeymoon to Cancun.

The youth club gave a Christmas .program followed by a visit from Santa Claus. Santa gave everyone a bag filled with fruit and candy.

The meeting was adjourned.

Everyone then enjoyed a social hour with drinks furnished by the lodge and then a turkey and dressing meal.

The members and officers of Lodge 29 want to wish everyone happy holi­ days and a prosperous new year.

Lodge 40, El CampoHillje members enjoy Christmas· social SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje held the monthly meeting and Christmas social at the lodge hall on December 17, 1997.

A social hour was h~ld with. entertainment by Karl Matejka playmg the accordion, accompanied by Frankie Vanek playing the trumpet. Everyone enjoyed the festive music.

The meal prayer wa~ ~ed by James Bacak, trustee. A delicious meal of roast beef, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, and slaw was served to the members and guests. The delicious desserts were furnished by the members. ' The meeting was called to order by

President Bennie Reck. The pledge to the flag was recited and a moment of silent prayer was held for deceased and ill members of our lodge.

Special guests, Chairman of the Board· and District Six Director Matt Vanek, his wife Henrietta, and State Field Representative Jim Wiest, were introduced by President Reck. They brought greetings from the Home Office and gave a report on the incen­ tive awards contest. Members are encouraged to help the salesman of the lodge with signing new members to the lodge. Special thanks to Matt, Henrietta, and Jim for taking time to attend the meeting.

The installing of the 1998 officers was performed by Matt Vanek.

The Lodge 66, Waco Christmas party on December 13 at Linden Hall was a great success. Over 200 people were in attendance. The hall was deco­ rated beautifully and the dinner was delicious. Thanks to all the entertain­ ment committee and other members for donating the turkeys, for baking and carving them, and for providing the "fixins" for the dressing. Also, thanks to those members for donating the deli­ cious salad and desserts.

Special guests were Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and his wife, Mary; Brother Cyrill Pokladník and his wife, Justine; State Youth· Director Joni Lange and her husband, Kenny; and District Three Director Johnnie Krizan and his mother, Ruth Krizan of Lodge 6, Cottonwood. There were lots of door prizes awarded and a short program presented by the youth club members. There were so many beautiful children pre­ sent who eagerly welcomed the visit by Santa Claus.

Everyone seemed to enjoy visiting, the food and fellowship and Santa 's visit. Many thanks to everyone for helping in so many ways to make this party the success that it was. Also, thanks to so many members for com­ ing out to be with us.

Lodge 88, Houston presents December 14 meeting minutes President Clara Broz opened the meeting at 10:05 a.m. and King Hegwood, Vincent Hegwood and Gene Barcak presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegaince. Names of eight deceased members were read. Minutes were read and approved.

Correspondence was read. Nine new applicants were approved and one transferred in.

Officers' Reports President Broz requested during the annual meeting that everyone speak at the microphone at the back of the room. First Vice President Marie Stayton requested the Resolutions Committee to carry the flags in January. Secretary-Treasurer Melanie Spies read. the Consolidated Income Statement. Youth Leader Barbara L. Gonzales reported the youth meeting night will again be the third Wednesday of each month. Please note the change. The youth have been very busy in November. The lock-in was very successful with 31 youth and six adults attending. The Christmas party was well-attended with 150 guests.

The Choral Group did a great job in helping bring in Santa. The children again collected items to send to the Needville Rest Home.

Committee Reports Ben Hogan of the Entertainment Committee asked that you pick up a copy of the dance schedule; a lot of hard work goes into preparation. Ben then informed the members he will not seek reelection to the entertainment committee. He thanked everyone who helped him during the year.

Margaret Allbritton of the Board of Trustees reported the following actions were brought before the members: resealing the walk-in cooler; repairing the pole light in the parking lot; med­ ical expenses for employee mishap; Reci and White 's meeting on Jan u ary 11, 1998; and a donation to the Last Alarm Club, a fireman 's fund. Dorothy Pflughaupt of the Blue Room reported a very successful Blue Room party. She thanked everyone for their help throughout the year.

Jeanette Bender of the Kitchen thanked all the volunteers who worked in the kitchen on meeting night and special occasions.

Kathy Trefell of the Birthday Club Sisters reported plans are being made for a tour of downtown and a visit to IMAX theater. Also, plans to visit the Bush Library are underway.

Josephine Pflughaupt of the Scholarship Committee reported appli­ cations for 1998 scholarships are due December 31, 1997.

Donna Merkle of the Adult Folk Dance Club reported practice will resume Saturday, January 3 for the 1998 season from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

We will perform in February at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Donna and Guenter volunteered to collect adult and children Czech costumes that are not being used. Please contact them with any donations you have. If you want to sell, we will negotiate.

Gene Barcak of the Choral Club reported the next performance will be at the Needville Rest Home on December 19, 1997.

Jim Rhode of the Concert Orchestra reported a good year in 1997 perform­ ing 12 jobs. Thanks to Helen Hegwood and Donna Merkle for their help this year. They are looking for a good year in 1998.

District Five Director Louis Hanus complimented the youth club and their parents for their support and the out­ standing leadership of Barbara Gonzales, our youth leader. Her untir­ ing .work in the kitchen has proved to be beneficial. Louis then reported on interest rates set by the Home Office and the insurance sales report furnished by the Home Office.

President Broz recognized the two volleyball teams who took first and third places this year in the State Volleyball Tournament. The prize money was presented to the office and the trophies will be displayed. Lynn Pflughaupt came forward to announce the winning team members as Lynn Pflughaupt, Tracy Allbritton, Brent Shepherd, Kevin Sibl ik, Megan McCauley, and Marian Kadlecek. The second team members are Bobby Allbritton, Lori Pflughaupt, Matt Shepherd, Kelli Siblik, Jeff Barcak, and Kristy Shepherd. The mascot was Katie Allbritton.

State Field Representative Helen Hegwood reported the number one salesperson for November goes to Marian Kadlecek. Also, congratula­ tions to Marian on $1,000,000 in insur­ nace sales this year. Helen asked all sales representatives to stand and be recognized for their hard work throughout the year.

There were 137 members present.

Helen led the members in singing "Happy Birthday" to 27 celebrants.

Beverage donors were Fred and Grace Schneider, Gloria and Henry Gerhart, Tom and Lydia Marsh, and Lynn and Lori Pflughaupt.

Door prize winners were Fred Buri, Al Leedy, Pat Bruce, Stella Rebelski, and Annabelle Viet. Additional prizes were won by Henry Gerhart, Tim Kostom, and Helen Kubicek.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth reports on member, lodge activities Dear Members and Friends, If you had something to get done in 1997, time ran out. Every year we live is good, but all of us hope the new year will be better. Just the same, we are thankful for all the good things that we had in the past year. I am sure there are many sad times, but if we did not have bad times we would not know when we have it good.

In our lodge, we had many of our members pass away and we shall miss all of them. While they were among us, we all had wonderful times togeth­ er. It was sad news on December 28 to hear that Brother Nick Morris had passed away. He was a past editor of our Czech Vestnik and also past President of our Supreme Lodge.

Brother Nick was the one that started the history of the lodges in all of Texas.

Brother Morris was buried December 30. May his soul rest in peace and also all members that have passed in years gone by.

On December 12, Mr. Forrest Lindsay, brother of Inez Krivanek of our lodge, passed away. Mr. Lindsay lived in Weatherford,Texas.

Brother Ed Faraizl is in the hospital and in the rehab. So Ed, get well soon.

Mary Pulliam is home after several days in the hospital with blood clots but she is getting better. Sophie Blazek is taking good care of her, and she is also being helped with the home health care.

In December, our Christmas party for young and old was enjoyed and the youth club put on a nice program. We need to thank old Santa Claus (Gordon Hubenak) because he does a nice job with the children. Santa gave out gifts to the young and later bags of fruit, candy, and nuts of different kinds.

We always save some bags to take to the homebound and those in the nursing homes. It sure makes one feel good when we visit the sick members.

I went to several homes and can report that the members were very happy to receive the bags. Some had tears in their eyee. Brother Kubala also went to see some of the members. These members thought it was so nice of the lodge to remember them. I have done this many years, and I hope someone will continue to do something for these old members. Eighty people enjoyed the catered noon meal as Mr. Pat Veit, local accordionist, entertained the members throughout the afternoon. Many thanks goes to the members who brought desserts for the meal.

Santa Claus presented the lodge's youth with goody bags, and many members received Christmas presents as· door prizes.

Other entertainment included an original short story reading by Sister Pat Reid and a game led by FAC Donna Vanek.

A brief business meeting followed as President Yvonne Garrett called the meeting to order.

Lodge172,Pasadena elects '98 officers at December meeting On Wednesday,December 17, 1997, Lodge 172 held their regular meeting.

After a delicious meal, the meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Robert Mayfield. After the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed, Robert welcomed our special guests, Louis Hanus, Helen Hegwood and hus­ band King, Fred Buri and wife JoAnn, and last but not least, Evelyn Mikeska.

Entertainment Committee Chairman Mary Byers reminded everyone about the ballroom dance that our lodge will have February 28, 1998. She told everyone that the New Year's Eve tick­ et sales are doing good. She thanked everyone on the entertainment commit­ tee for helping her when she called on them.

All committees (the by-laws com­ mittee and the remuneration commit­ tee) gave their reports. All committee reports were seconded and approved.

After all old business was completed and all reports were given, an election of officers was held. All the officers were elected by acclamation.

Members of SPJST Lodge 175, Rosenberg attended the Czech Gala, a fund raising dinner/dance for the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center held on November 30, 1997, at LaGrange, Texas.

SPJST Lodge 175 presented Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center President Retta Chandler with a dona­ tion in the amount of $5,000 for the Center's capital development fund. A donation was also made in the amount of $1,000 to the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio for the reno­ vation of the Czech Texan exhibit.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center will be located in LaGrange in historic Fayette County, the "Cradle of Czech Immigration."

The center will be a multi-functional facility that will preserve and promote the history, language, culture and her­ itage of Texans of Czech ethnicity. . This facility will honor the immigrants who left their homeland in search of a better life. Their search for a new beginning brought many of them to the rolling hills of Fayette County because of the similarity in the lay of the land to that of the Czech Republic. Truly, Fayette County, the "Cradle of Czech Immigration," is most fitting and deserving of a Czech center to honor these immigrants.

Dr. Henry Maresh and Estelle Hudson, in 1934, co-authored the book Czech Pioneers of the Southwest. The

widow of Dr. Henry Maresh, Thelma Burnett Maresh, chose to have the book republished. What better tribute to her husband and the Czechs of Texas. Through the availabity of this book, Lodge 175 was able to raise funds to make it possible for our lodge to make donations to state facilities which will benefit all people of Czech descent in Texas.

Lodge 201, BleibervilleNelsonville reports on December meeting The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville was held on Sunday, December 14, 1997.

The meeting was called to order by President Mrs. Elaine Duron at 1 :30 p.m. All officers were in attendance.

A total of 15 members and two visitors attended.

Youth Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club visits nursing home Dear Readers, On December 14, 1997, Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club went to the Southern Manor Nursing Home. We caroled and gave out candy canes to the residents.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club enjoys holiday activities Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club had their monthly meeting on Sunday, December 7 at 2 p.m. Before the meet­ ing, we delivered our toys to MASH at Varsity Ford.

Then, we had our meeting and made two Christmas ornaments. We put our ornaments on the Christmas tree for decorations.

We had one visitor, Monica Gonzales, and one new mem­ ber, Bradley Shelfer. Then, we deco­ rated and played a game with our candy canes that our honorary grand­ parents brought us.

We also practiced for our Christmas program which turned out great. Then, Santa Clause came. We hade a fun time.

The register was read. There were 29 members present and 23 adults.

The purpose of the contest is to create an artistic design for the 1998 camp T~shirts.

The theme for this year's 'I-Shirt Design Contest is "SPJST­ Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow."

Ivana Trump Personality Profile Ivana Trump grew up in Gottwaldov, Czechoslovakia, a mid­ sized town just south of Prague. As a child, her father noticed her athletic talent and began training her, focusing on skiing. At six, she joined the ski circuit and won the first downhill race she competed in. Ivana 's father felt she needed more concentrated training and enrolled her in a very strict Communist training camp for child athletes when she was twelve. By Pat Parma Although the largest groups of peo­ ple of Czech extraction did not begin arriving in Fort Bend County until after 1890, the perseverance and deter­ mination of these hard working people became noted in very early years and is evident today.

Krasna The first Czech Catholics arrived and settled in a little settlement named Krasna. In 1892, a school was built and also in that year, the KJT Society No. 16 was chartered. ln 1899, a Moravian Brethren congregation was organized, and in 1901, RVOS Lodge 20 was organized. In 1911, SPJST Lodge 96 was organized. Today, all that remains of Krasna is a road sign and a large cemetery. The earliest bur­ ial in the Krasna cemetery was that of Vaclav Cerny, October 17, 1853 to September 23, 1894, followed by Rosie Sumer, 1828-1900. Grave markers yield the names of Rippel, Sebesta, Jurek, Horelica, Vacula, Fojt, Marek, Kovar, Toman Mazola, Brown, Martisek, Sutton, Dujka, Hornicko, Seker, Hlavaty, Jecmanek, Adamek, Kocurek, Kanak, Schiller, Svec, Zotyka, Kosik, Minsk, Kucera, Krejcicek, Klecka, Chalupa, Schrank, Klecka, Peter, Viaclovsky, Jurek, Stavinoha, Kalas, Leyandowski, Sliva, Konvicka, Grigar, Hruzek, Jurek, Vasek, Macha, Pustejovski, Jachect, and Sliva.

With the strong influence the people of Czech heritage had on the county, it was determined that these people should be honored and the Czech her­ itage and culture shared with other individuals.

Twenty-three years ago, a group from the Rose-Rich Chamber of Commerce gathered at the Fort Bend County Fair Grounds to discuss the beginning of a festival which would honor the Czechs of Fort Bend County.

Czech Fest was born. Those first meetings brought together a large group of individuals who were inter­ ested in promoting such a festival.

Four years ago, the Chamber of Commerce decided to discontinue the Czech Fest. Four couples who are members of the Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend County, which had been organized in June, 1987, came forward and were determined to see the festival continue. The Fort Bend County Czech Alliance was chartered as a non-profit organization and will now sponsor their Fourth Czech Fest With the thought of preservation ·and awareness of the contributions the Czech people have made to Texas, sev­ eral Fort Bend County organizations have recently made donations to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center to be located in LaGrange. The Fort Bend County Czech Alliance donated $5,000, SPJST Lodge 175, Rosenberg donated $5,000, and CHS of Fort Bend County donated $1,000.

Several individuals have also made donations to the TCHCC. These orga­ nizations also saw the need for the updating of the Czech exhibit at the Institute of Texan .Cultures and made donations: Fort Bend County Czech Alliance-$1,000; SPJST Lodge 175-$1,000; and CHS of Fort Bend County-$1,000.

I would like to share a part of the E­ mail Christmas greeting from the Czech Republic I received from Mirek Koudelka on December 25, 1997: ''I remember my relatives, both those who are already gone and those who are, thank God, alive, and friends, too." .

Czechs came to the area in 1895.

Fairchilds is a large farming communi­ ty. Descendants of these early settlers still rely on the rich farming land in the area. In 1913, SPJST Lodge 114 was organized, and in 1917, the Czech Presbyterianchurch was organized.

The early Czech settlers were also attracted to other cities and towns in the county. Such towns as Beasley, Guy, Needville, Orchard, Richmond, Rosenberg, and Sugar Land can trace (Sister Parma is a member of SPJST their beginnings to organizations Lodge 175, Rosenberg.) which organizedby the year 1911.
