Hardy players brave weather for state volleyball tournament

by State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz Saturday, November 15 dawned bitter cold and gray in Eddy, Texas. As players began to arrive there were reports of sleet and light snow.

Assuredly the New Braunfels team would elect to stay home on this blustery day, I guessed. I was wrong and glad to be! Although we did have cancellations from 13 down to 9 teams, I was impressed that several young men, Jonathan Haag from Lodge 185, New

Braunfels; and Chad and Jason Cervenka from Lodge 29, Taylor, brought teams to the tournament. As I understand, these "graduated" SPJST Youth Club members took the initiative to form their lodge teams and bring them to the State Volleyball Tournament. We need more young men and women like those involved in this tournament to be active in our lodges!

Merry Christmas Even as times have changed, some good things remain the same. The following sentiment, expressed by the late Birdie Hilsher, an early advocate and leader of the youth program within the SPJST, radiates the same warmth and glow as it did when it first appeared in the Vestnik nearly 50 years ago.

Rejoice, Its Christmas May the spirit of Christmas pervade your home, however humble or regal it is, like the warm and comforting glow of a friendly fire.

May your dear ones be near you on the day of Yule to share with you the joys and blessings of the Season.

May the gifts, large and small, that are given and received this day, be given and received with the humility and grace with which the very first gifts were given on that first Christmas by the Three Wise Men so long ago and far away.

May there be contentment in your house this day, the contentment that comes from serenity of mind and the spiritual well-being of those who believe in the inherent goodness of man and who have faith in the wisdoms and mercy of Divine Providence.

May the twinkling lights on your Christmas tree rival in gaiety the stars in the evening sky, bright reflections of the happiness which surrounds you and yours, a happiness to be shared with your neighbors and others less blessed; so that they, too, will know the joys of the Season and be comforted.

May there be laughter and merriment in your home this most joyous time of the year, expressing the love and affection that overflows the grateful hearts of you and yours.

May your home ring out with the carols of Christmas, proclaiming the spirit of Nativity to all the world, and may that spirit sustain and protect your home and those who share its blessings with you in all the days to come.

No Lump of Coal Here Many SPJST sales representatives and SPJST Home Office personnel received an early Christmas present last week, learning that they had passed Part II of the Fraternal Insurance Counsellor (FIC) Training Program. Approximately 80 SPJST sales representatives and staff members are enrolled in the program.

Attaining the FIC designation comes through the successful completion of examinations based on the content of three courses - The Fraternal Sales Training Program Basic Course, Intermediate Course and Advanced Course.

Thanks to State Field Manager Gene McBride and the State Field Representatives who are conducting the FIC classes. It's a wonderful program that offers a comprehensive story of the development, growth and marketing of fraternal life insurance.

If you're a sales representative and are not presently enrolled in the FIC course; or, if you've considered becoming a sales representative for your local lodge, consider enrolling.

According to Mr. McBride, a second FIC training class will likely commence in the fall of 1998. Watch for details in a coming edition.

VVV Deadline to Request Scholarship Applications Fast Approaching Something else to watch out for is the December 31 deadline to request applications for 1998 SPJST scholarships. Young people, parents and grandparents are encouraged to contact the SPJST Home Office before this due date and request an application. Upon receiving the application packet, students will have until February 1, 1998 to return their completed application.

Also, please note that the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive continues through December 31. To those of you who have already contributed, thank you! To everyone else, thank you for your timely consideration.

Around the State SPJST cookbook sales top 11,000 in '97; benefactors include SPJST lodges, Ronald McDonald House and SPJST scholarship fund Cookbooks, cookbooks and more cookbooks!! The SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbook Committee would like to say "Thank You" to all of you who contributed their favorite and most cherished family recipes. A special thanks also goes out to the Home Office staff who worked so hard in putting this cookbook together and to the many people who have purchased anywhere from one to 50 copies of the cookbook — yes, 50 copies. We have had some members order as many as 50 cookbooks at a time. This cookbook has literally been shipped all over the United States and has even made it abroad as we have shipped a couple copies to Europe.

When this project was first considered, we expected to have maybe 400 to 500 recipes submitted but were we surprised. In all we received some 2,200 recipes to review and consider.

Recipes ranging from Apple Pie to Casseroles to some of the best Kolache recipes you can find. The response was just overwhelming, with recipes that had been handed down from generation to generation. We even had recipes submitted to us from friends located in the Czech Republic.

by Havel available to the highest bidder The fifth and final autographed SPJST tarok poster autographed by Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel will be auctioned to the highest bidder through the Vestnik. All proceeds will benefit the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

SPJST offering $750 scholarships to qualified members The SPJST is offering $750 scholarships to qualified members. Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of the SPJST for one year or more may submit a request for a scholarship application until December 31, 1997. Due to the constraints placed on us by the publishing company, we unfortunately had to eliminate some of the recipes that were submitted; however, 1,160 recipes make a pretty big cookbook — more than 500 pages of some of the most wonderful recipes you can imagine. In a small way, we hope that some of these recipes will help keep our Czech heritage alive.

In all we have sold in excess of 11,000 cookbooks. The funds raised from this project have gone to a number of worthy charities. SPJST is very proud of the fact that we were able to donate $17,000 to the Ronald McDonald House and roughly another $2,000 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

It should also be noted that these amounts are after taking out the expenses for publishing, shipping and postage. The biggest benefactors from this project however have been those lodges-who sold the cookbooks as a fund-raiser. The participating lodges and youth clubs have had the opportunity to make an estimated $25,000.

The excitement and enthusiasm created by this project over the past year has been just tremendous. For those of you who did not get a copy of the cookbook we feel you missed out on something very special.

In closing, we once again want to say "THANK YOU" to everyone who donated, purchased or sold cookbooks.

It was a lot of work but also a whole lot of fun.

Volleyball (Continued from page 1 State Volleyball Tournament, I arrived extra early. It was a relief to see District One come bustling through the door, bringing with them a burst of cold, fresh air. The District One team was ready for action! Suddenly the doors opened and everyone arrived at the same time.

Thank goodness for the guidance of President Leshikar, District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and his wife Irma. Everything settled down quickly and play began just a little off scheduled time.

After a final determination, the teams decided that instead of double elimination that they would like to play round robin. The spiking teams were moved to the North gym and the nonspiking teams stayed in the larger South gym.

Competing in the non-spiking division were: Lodge 88, The Sportsman; Lodge 88, The Friend Lee's; District Two Team; and Lodge 200, BrucevilleEddy. Competing in the spiking division were: Lodge 177, Academy, Team One; Lodge 177, Team Two Youth; Lodge 17, New Tabor District One; Lodge 185, New Braunfels, and Lodge 29 Taylor.

Powerful Spiking Competition Frank, Howard and I divided up duties and I spent most my time in the gym where the spiking competition was being held. It was intense at times, with volleys moving rapidly back and forth between the teams.

It became apparent that this time the older players proved to be a bit too much for the younger teams of New Braunfels and Taylor. The natural order led the younger teams of New Braunfels and Taylor vying for third and fourth places and the older teams,

Teams Exchange Shotgun Volleys I caught the last of the non-spiking division during an interesting game hetween the District Two Team and the Houston Friend Lee's. The crowd went wild, stomping their feet and chanting.

District Two responded by literally hiking up their socks and digging in their heels to respond to the shotgun of volleys from the Friend Lee's.

Notwithstanding the uproarious crowd at the close scores, victory proved elusive to District Two. The Friend Lee's bested District Two in spite of their most daring and often hilarious efforts.

To the Victors Goes the Spoils I also caught part of the BrucevilleEddy and Houston Sportsman game.

The teams were evenly matched and the competition close. The Houston teams have skilled players but Bruceville-Eddy gave them a good run for the money, volley for volley. Wednesday December 24, 1997—VESTNIK/5 Special Thanks to Support Crew My thanks again to District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and his understanding wife, Mrs. Irma Klinkovsky. Frank's really helped get me through this year. Also, thanks to Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar for being there to oversee the tournament. I was pleased that Vice President Leonard Mikeska visited the tournament despite the biting cold weather.

Kudos for Mayoral Leg Work To Gene McBride, Mayor of Bruceville, thanks for all the leg work to secure the gym for the day's activities. Temple area young people encouraged to enroll in pilot SPJST dance program Dear Friends, We are writing to inform you of an exciting new benefit being offered to SPJST members in good standing between the ages of 3 and 17 in the greater Temple area. It's a dance program and it is being organized as a pilot program under the guidelines set forth by the SPJST Supreme Lodge at their February 1997 meeting. Because it is a new program, initial participation is being set at 18 girls and/or boys.

Friday, May 1. There will be no class on April 10, which is the Friday before Easter. Cost for participating in the class is $15 per month. This amounts to a 50 percent savings over participation in comparable dance programs. The deadline to register for class is January 9. Early registration is encouraged!

The SPJST Dance Program is sponsored by the SPJST Supreme Lodge and under the general direction of the Supreme Lodge President, State Youth Director and Lodge Advisory Committee. Please note that the parents of the dancers will be responsible for the formation of the Dance Program Advisory Committee in January. All officers of the Advisory Committee will be members of the SPJST in good standing.

The Advisory Committee will have the authority to make appropriate rules and regulations in writing for an orderly management of such activities.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood celebrates Christmas, contributes to area service organizations On December 7, 1997, the monthly meeting of Lodge 6, Cottonwood was called to order at 2 p.m. by Brother Robert Dobecka, President. The youth club led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. A moment of silence was had for our departed member, Brother Raymond Smetak.

Sister Georgie Soukup's report was given. There were 38 people present at our meeting with two of them being guests. Welcome to Genie Watts and Effie Mae Davis. We look forward to them joining us again.

Sister Barbara Hykel, secretary, read the minutes from our last meeting, which were approved as read.

Sister Hattie Kaska of the Sunshine Committee gave her report. She reported sending sympathy cards to Brother Cyrill Svrcek upon the death of Alice Jane Svrcek, and to Mrs. Ruby Smetak upon the loss of Brother Raymond Smetak. Our deepest sympathy to these families.

Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the youth club report. She reported that they now have more cookbooks for sale if anyone wants one. It was reported that the youth helped in the decoration of the hall for Christmas on November 28. She reported that they are working on Fridays getting their crafts done for delivery to the West Rest Haven on Sunday, December 21. She said they could use some help on Fridays if anyone is interested.

Sister Lydia Dobecka, FAC, gave her report. She reported that she did not have much to report on at this time. She thanked all the volunteers that helped decorate, move furniture, helped in the kitchen, cleaned tables and chairs, and to all that helped out all year long. She appreciates all the help that she asks you to do. She also needs your ACTS sheets turned in for the year, as they need to be in by January.

It was good to have Brother Jerry Kucera, District Three State Field Representative, along with his wife, Dorothy, and his family with us. He reported that we had made the Gold Award. He reported that the lodge needed about 16 more to qualify for the Platinum Award, which he encouraged all our lodge sales representatives to get busy since December 31 is the deadline.

Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director, was able to be with us for a while as he had another engagement that afternoon. He spoke with us a bit, after checking his watch asking how much time he had. Bet it's hard for him getting used to wearing that watch. Very good, Johnnie! He reported that he had a few extra books, "We're Czechs" by Robert L. Skrabanek. They are $15 each and have been signed by Dr. Skrabanek.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, December 24, 1997 our lodge has five active sales representatives, Brother Johnnie Krizan, Sister Ruth Krizan, Brother Jerry Kucera, Brother Robert Dobecka, and Brother B.J. Hlavaty. He thanked them for the work they have been doing and encouraged them to continue working toward that Platinum Award for Lodge 6. He wished everyone a "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year."

Brother George Straten and Sister Jerelene Lenart were thanked for their cooking of the turkeys for our Christmas party. There was a square table with two chairs sitting in the middle of the dance floor, which all was wondering what that table represented. It was learned that as the turkeys cooked, George and Jerelene played "hands and foots," according to Jerelene. Thanks to both of you for the good turkeys.

Those in attendance with birthdays for the month were Brother Ernest Bezdek, Sister Christine Matus and Angela Kucera. "Happy Birthday" to you and to all with a birthday this month. Sister Evelyn Bezdek led the group in a happy birthday song.

Lodge Supports Community Services At this time each year our lodge donates money to various organizations in the community. The recipients are West Volunteer FireDepartment, West Ambulance Service, SPJST—Temple Scholarship, West Sokol, West Chamber of Commerce, McLennan-Hill County Czech Heritage Society, Elm Mott VFD, Penelope VFD, Chalk Bluff VFD, Leroy VFD, Abbott VFD, Aquilla VFD, and Gholson VFD. Some new ones this year are West Athletic League Booster Club, West Boy Scouts and West Senior Citizens.

It was voted on and approved that Lodge 6, Cottonwood join the Chamber of Commerce by recommendation of Brother Johnnie Krizan.

Brother Al Soukup presented Sister Lydia Dobecka with a turkey and ham. This was done in appreciation of her being elected as our fraternalist of the year from our lodge. She said this was a big surprise to her.

Next Meeting January 4 The meeting was then adjourned with our next meeting to be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 1998. Our new additions should be completed, so come to the back entrance to a new meeting room.

After the meeting, others were still flowing in for our Christmas party.

There was fun and fellowship for the remainder of the afternoon. A delicious meal of turkey and dressing with all the trimmings was enjoyed by everyone. Thanks to the ladies for bringing all the delicious desserts.

After the meal, the youth club gave a short program. Then, Santa Claus showed up, passing out goodies and taking pictures with the little ones.

Presents from under the Christmas tree were then distributed. It was all lots of fun and thanks to all that came to share it. Everyone had a good time.

26, Skidmore elects 1998 officers Lodge

SPJST Lodge 26, Olmos (Skidmore) held their Christmas party on Thursday, December 4 at 6 p.m. at the lodge hall.

The invocation was said by all in unison repeating the Lord's prayer.

Thirteen members enjoyed a covered dish supper.

After the supper a business meeting was held. Linda Henkhaus, president, called the meeting to order. Charlie Hanus presented the flag and all repeated the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Annie Cox read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved.

Treasurer Edna Bohac gave the treasurer's and savings account reports.

That also was approved.

The officers for 1998 were elected.

Lodge 47, Seaton reports on December meeting and upcoming New Year's Eve dance Dear Brothers and Sisters, President Edwin Pechal opened the meeting on Sunday, December 7, 1997, at 2 p.m. Flag Bearers Rachel Baca and Patrick Greger brought in the flags and led in the pledge to the U.S. flag.

We remained standing in tribute to the memory of deceased lodge brothers Clarence Sula and Vail Logsdon and a fine gentleman and friend, Gene Smitherman of KMIL Cameron. May these brothers rest in eternal peace and deepest sympathy to their surviving families. They shall be missed.

Visitors recognized were Freddie Schroeder and Rosa Lee Pechal.

Please come again. The sick list included Ladis Vrazel (now deceased), Angeline Kelarek, Ace Chlapek, and Wilma Motl. Hope the days ahead are better and a speedy recovery from whatever ails you.

The roll call of officers, trustees, and sales representatives was read by Secretary Sister Dolores Skrabanek with Ruth Hanusch absent. New member accepted was Orn B. Helms so a warm welcome to you and come to participate in lodge activities. The only correspondence we had was a thank-you note from the family of Brother Walter Haisler for the floral wreath sent to his funeral services.

Board minutes were read by Vice President and Board Secretary Edwin Vasicek.

President Pechal talked about the fund raiser in March and the New Year's Eve dance. For the New Year's Eve dance, Gladys Marek will prepare the black-eyed peas and members can bring the corn bread that will be served at midnight with coffee, too. A keg of beer was donated by Willie and Adeline Kohutek and also one by Otis Meier and Edwin Marek. Thanks to these donors also for the soda water served at the Christmas party on December 14.

Those wishing to be on a committee are to inform Edwin Pechal or Edwin Vasicek. The youth members delivered the turkey dinners to those that could not come to the party.

Edwin Vasicek, Vice President, talked about the fund raiser. Buy tickets, donate items for the silent auction or donate your time and sweets.

The mid-winter state tarok tournament will be held at Seaton Star Hall on Saturday, January 17. So if you are into playing the game, plan to come and participate. Kolaches and coffee will be available at 8 p.m. and play starts at 9 a.m. Hope to see you then.

The youth club Christmas party was postponed from Friday, December 12 to Thursday, December 18 due to the Rogers football team being in the semifinals on Friday night.

New Year's Eve Dance is just around the corner. This year, we will have a battle dance. Music will be by the Vanek Czech Band and the Kaluza Polka Band. Dance time will be 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Tickets are now available. Advance tickets for adults are $10 and for teens are $3. If you wait and get your tickets at the door the charge will be $12 for adults and $4 for teens.

87, Temple reports: "Short, Sweet and Unseasonal" Lodge

In a stroke of good will toward my manual note-taking skills, all normal business for our December meeting was tabled and postponed until January. This was, of course, only after we had recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence for our departed members. We moved on immediately to enjoy an evening of fellowship and eclectic edibles ranging from Tex-Mex enchiladas through Czech sausage all the way to the quintessential American dessert of chocolate chip cookies.

We also shared a birthday cake made by Mary Ann and Lad Zatopek for our four December birthday babies!

The two smallest enjoyed it immensely, and although their surname would be very familiar to my readers, on account of the strange disappearance of all of the frosting from the surface of the cake, they shall remain anonymous in order to protect their sticky noses and fingers!

Santa Claus was unfortunately detained in Minneapolis and sent his regrets. It seems that, unbeknownst to him, his suit was borrowed by a young

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, December 24, 1997 man planning a special Christmas sur prise for his girlfriend! His loyal elf, Treasurer Daryl Entrop, distributed gifts to our young attendees who were content with the substitution.

Brother Daryl also officiated at the round robin gift exchange. There was much good natured competition for the most popular prizes, and everyone had a good time. Many of the participants did not unwrap their gifts but generously donated them to the family we are sponsoring for Christmas, and this made our exchange even more enjoyable.

We ended our meeting with the installation of our officers, and Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sid Kacir administered the oaths of office.

On behalf of all of my fellow office holders, we look forward to serving another year in fellowship and service to the community.

Souchek who has been very busy! Pat Holeman, we hear that you are a little better, and we all hope that you will get lots better!

Sometimes we overlook older members who no longer can come to the lodge. My thanks go to Kathy Trefell who told me about Louis Schenburn.

Louis and his family were active many years. He was night watchman for years alternating with Mike Trefell.

His wife Mary was very active with the youth including ceramics every summer; she died in an auto accident some years ago. Daughter Susan was an officer in our lodge. Special greetings go to Louis Schenburn at Lexington Rest Home.

That adult dancing class meets every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Join them if you can—I hear they are having lots of fun!

For some good dancing, it is Donnie Wavra on the 27th and the Vrazels on New Year's Eve (from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.).

Lodge 88, Houston reports on lodge and member activities President Clara Broz graciously welcomed the guests to the Christmas program and party. Edna Wehring presented the three age groups of dancers, each doing a dance in beautiful costumes. The Choral Club, under the direction of Helen Hegwood, sang beautiful carols. The rendition of "Holy Night" by Fred Buri and joined by the club was great! Of course, Santa came and listened to the wishes of the young ones. Delicious refreshments were served.

The Birthday Club Christmas dinner was enjoyed by all. It was a happy occasion, made more festive by Club President Kathy Trefell and several members wearing Saint Nick caps!

We really enjoyed the film "Kolya" which was the 1997 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film. It was very interesting, and Andrej, who played the little boy, Kolya, was adorable! Our thanks go to Lillian Pivonka for making this possible with the help of Fraternal Activities Coordinator Larry Pflughaupt, Jerome Ermis and our Professor William Souchek. The Pivonkas have had a terrible year losing husband and father, Bernard Pivonka. I think having the Pivonka Czech Language Class named after Bernard is a beautiful memorial, for he was always so happy about teaching Czech and participating in Czech heritage projects.

Our lodge was sorry to hear of the death of member Kermit Arthur Zingelmann, who was a member of our Men's Club. Our sympathy goes to his wife Adeline, daughter Linda Williams and husband George, son David Zingelmann and wife Letha, and other relatives.

Benevolence and Brotherhood: Strong and Alive at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston Warm and fuzzy feelings? Trite but an accurate description of the atmosphere at SPJST Lodge 88 Pokrok Houstonu on December 8 for the screening of the Oscar-winning film Kolya. This last film in Lodge 88's first-ever film festival tells the story of Kolya, a five-year-old boy, who leads Frantisek Louka, a roguish and hardened bachelor, through his own personal Velvet Revolution to a rediscovery of his humanity.

This could also be a description of the audiences at the film festival. At first, cool and reserved for the showing of the Chaplinesque "The Firemen's Ball" and ready to leave when the lights came back up. But with each succeeding film, viewers would linger a bit longer to introduce themselves to their neighbors and discuss the film they had just seen. "May I bring a snack to share next week" or "Here, let me help you put the tables and chairs back in place" could be heard more and more with each succeeding film. By the final film, the table was decorated with an Advent wreath and laden with so much food we had to say "Please, take some home with you!" Dorts made from scratch, authentic chlebicky, chips and dips, cakes, pies, sausages, and cookies covered the table. Refrains of "Will there be another film festival" or "Do post something in the Vestnik when you do something like this again" were the norm for this night.

We would like to thank William Souchek for bringing our proposal for the film festival to the attention of Lodge 88 President Clara Broz; to Clara Broz and the Board of Directors for recognizing that this was one more facet of our Czech heritage that should

be shared with others so they, too, could gain a small insight into the Czech roots of the SPJST; to Larry Pflughaupt who took time out from his busy schedule to be at each and every film and make the intricate video connections and remain throughout each film in case of any glitches; to Sokol Houston Education Director Louise Keyes and her husband Marvin for the loan of their large-screen monitor; to SPJST Lodge 88 Publicity Chairman Fred Buri for making sure press releases went out; to the many SPJST members, and Sharon Rout and Scott Brooks and other Pivonka Language Class members who contributed each in their own way to make the film festival a success; to Royal Warnasch and SPJST Lodge 88 Past President Jerry Ermis who, among the many details they handled, arranged for the hall to be open and ready for set-up. And, finally and most importantly, we wish to thank Edith Lambeth, our own "Golden Czech Lion." Mrs. Lambeth not only helped prepare snacks and donated the use of her television for each of the films, she drove over 100 miles each night to be sure that Lillian and I and all the equipment needed arrived safely and that the viewing room was ready for those magic words: It's showtime at the SPJST! Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle enjoys Christmas luncheon The Ladies Circle of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas, met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, December 9, 1997, at the lodge hall. President Florence Greer opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a silent prayer for our deceased members, Rosie Zalesak, Raymond Hubenak, and Frank Tesar, Sr. The minutes of the October 14 and November 11 meetings were read and approved.

Correspondence was read. Thankyou notes had been received from SPJST Lodge 92 for the $400 donation; from Mary Palachek, Dick Durham, Anna Lesikar, and Lydia Palachek for recent get-well wishes and money; and thank-you notes from the families of Raymond Hubenak and Rosie Zalesak for sympathy memorials.

Treasurer Evelyn Spacek reported balances in the bank accounts, and then she reported on Sunshine greetings to our ailing members. It was learned that Maria Prill had gone to Arizona to live with her daughter. Those not feeling too well were Flora Koci and Christine Zich, but Joe Gregory was on the mend and probably was at home at this time.

Jo Prochaska, Hostess Chairperson, announced our January hostesses as Aurora Maldino, Clara Marchioni, and Mary Windham. In case of bad weather, the telephone committee (Billie Starr, Aurora Maldino, Ima Lou LaPlant, and Florence Greer) will be calling regarding meeting cancellation.

If in doubt, as to whether there will be a meeting, call Joyce Tesar, Manager, at 624-1361. Today's hostesses, Anna Lesikar, Kitty Rippin, Ima Lou LaPlant, and Frances Laux, were thanked for a job well done!

Old business concerned the status of the plastic forks, knives, and spoons— they have been bought and would be brought to the January meeting. Under new business, dues of $3 per member are due in January and should be paid to Evelyn Spacek as soon as possible.

A contribution of $25 to the Rest Home No. 1 at Taylor will be made by year end.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to our December honorees and Anna Lesikar, Ann Sustala, Elizabeth Gregory, James Greer, and Joe Kozel were reminded to head the luncheon line.

Joyce Tesar, hall manager, gave an update on coming events at the lodge hall. Please see the Vestnik calendar and come join in the fun at SPJST Lodge 92. She thanked all for the love, care, and sympathy bestowed to the family upon the death of her father-inlaw, Frank Tesar, Sr. Joyce gave a reading regarding a powerful turkey, after which President Greer led us in singing of the "Table Blessing" to the tune of "Edelweiss."

Our favorite Mr. Wright (otherwise known as Jimmy Greer) brought fun with our gift exchange. A lovely Christmas luncheon of ham, bountiful vegetables and desserts preceded our usual games and we adjourned until the next meeting on Tuesday, January 13, 1997, at the lodge hall.

Dear Members, We just finished our December meeting. There is another meeting scheduled for January 20, 1998, at 6 p.m. at Marie Morris' home. We will have the books audited and vote on officers.

At the December meeting, we had a few officers who said they will not return to the position they hold! We sure need members to show up for meetings. Our lodge meets quarterly.

Meetings last maybe one hour, maybe a little less or longer. Plain English: If members do not show, our lodge could fold.

Lodge 148, El Maton has been here a long time. I personally would like to see it keep going to our future children and their children.

Think about it. "Someone" needs to get involved.

He said a plan is being formulated which will be an overall state purpose for having meetings to encourage attendance which is low everywhere.

He installed the officers for 1998.

Trustees appointed the same committee chairs who served this past year to serve in 1998. They are: Bar Chair—Otis Beck Kitchen Chair—Louis Driska Bingo Chair—Josie Mitchell Ticket Chair—Bill Hutka Kathy Fritz was selected as President of Trustees and Helen Bland as Secretary. The overall status of the lodge was discussed and ways suggested to improve attendance at the functions.

On Friday night about three dozen members and guests enjoyed a ham, turkey, dressing and all the trimmings dinner at the lodge. The food was delicious. The youth club decorated the tables.

Lodge 179, Warrenton held their Christmas party on December 11 at the Warrenton Store. Activities started at 7 p.m. with members playing games.

We had a Christmas tree which was decorated by Greg Eckermann. Most of the members present took part in the gift exchange. After refreshments, a baked ham meal was served together with numerous side dishes.

Due to the absence of most of the officers, the business meeting was cancelled.

Lydia Peters, Alfred Baack, Orville Kunkel, and Arnold Peters were recognized for their December birthdays.

n Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee on behalf of Lodge 6, Cottonwood, officers and members wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge member, RAYMOND R. SMETAK, age 65 of Axtell, who passed away Sunday evening, November 16, 1997, in a Temple hospital.

Rosary was recited at 2 p.m.

November 19 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in West with Mass of Christian Burial following at 2:15 p.m. with the Rev. Isidore Rozycki as celebrant.

Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Mr. Smetak was horn August 9, 1929, in Los Angeles, California, and was raised in California and Cottonwood and had also lived in the Leroy-Gerald, Axtell areas for 10 years. He was a member of St. Joseph

Catholic Church of Elk. Mr. Smetak was a veteran serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 121 of Waco, a member of the Local Order of Moose and SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

Mr. Smetak was a refrigeration technician having working for Turnipseede Refrigeration in Waco for a number of years. He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond L. Smetak, who died August 26, 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Fay Smetak of Axtell; two sons, Mike Smetak of Axtell and Lenard Smetak of Brownwood; two brothers, Vincent Smetak of Somas, California, and Fred Smetak of Fort Worth; one sister, Anna Maresh of West; and four grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were Steven Marsh, Paul Smetak, Ernest Smetak, Ronnie Lucion, Barry Eyers, and Dennis Bebbendener.

Memorials may he made to the

American Cancer Society.

of Sympathy We, the resolution committee of Lodge 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge brother, LADIS FRANK VRAZEL, SR. of Temple, who passed away Friday, December 12, 1997, in a Temple hospital.

Services were at 2 p.m. December 13 at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Rev. John Bravenec, the Rev. Frank Simcik and the Rev. Norman Haisler officiating.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Mr. Vrazel, 57, was born in Milam County to Joseph Emil Vrazel and Mary Vanek Vrazel. He married Patricia Janes on December 26, 1959, in Cameron. He had lived in Temple since 1959 and was a member of the SPJST and Evangelical Brethren Church. He worked for Temple Products for many years. He worked at E.R. Carpenter Corporation since its beginning and retired with many years of service.

Survivors are his wife, Patricia Vrazel of Temple; a son, Ladis Frank Vrazel, Jr. of Clifton; two daughters, Debora Hoelscher and Sandra Williams, both of Temple; two brothers, Leo Vrazel of Rosebud and Louis Vrazel of Cameron; three sisters, Mary Woltman of Lott, and Annie Susik and Rosa Lee Kopriva, both of Cameron; nine grandchildren; and one greatgrandson.

May our departed brother rest in peace. God bless the family.

District One campers enjoy Czech party at summer camp

Dear Readers, They always say "better late than never!" With it being my last semester at Texas A&M University before my internship (whoop!), I have been very busy.

Although camp has been almost five months ago, it seems like yesterday we were at Camp Cal Verde having the time of our lives. District One attended camp from July 25 to 28. This year there were 73 campers and adults in attendance representing New Tabor, Dime Box, Snook and Bryan lodges.

This year's theme for camp was "Happy Birthday, SPJST!" All the campers, as well as adults had a usually great time swimming (keeping cool), horseback riding, canoeing, archery, and craft. Everyone enjoyed the cookout of hamburgers at the river the first night. Also, a shaving creme fight took place! As usual, everyone got covered with shaving creme (including me) and had a great time.

Keeping to the Czech theme, everyone participated in noodle making.

Yum! Yum! All the hard work paid off when we got to enjoy homemade chicken noodle soup at the Czech party on Saturday night. This party was 100 percent Czech with everything from polka music to kolaches for everyone to enjoy. A special thank-you goes out to Dave and Jerry's Catering in Caldwell, Texas, for catering our Czech meal of sausage, sauerkraut and potatoes. Also, thank you, Bud and Carol Petty and Mica and Tyler Sandner, for making a trip to camp to bring the food! The Czech party was concluded by singing "Happy Birthday" to my mom, Betty Suehs, who drove all the way to camp to spend her birthday (because all of her family was there!)

I know that everyone enjoyed the night hike down to the ceremonial grounds. Susan Skrabanek read a story around the campfire about an old bag of haunted bones! Everyone jumped out of their seats as Ralph scared us as the story was just about over! The older campers then went on a midnight scavenger hunt all around the campgrounds. Everyone was tired and wet by the time it was all over.

Everyone had a great time this year and cannot wait until next year. Thank you to the LITs who did a terrific job at camp and who helped organize the scary scavenger hunt. Thank you to Anne Schoeneman, Assistant District Youth Counselor, who organized the crafts and assisted with noodle making, and to Phillip Janke who led and organized making noodles. Club enjoys movies Dear Readers, On Saturday, December 12, we went to the movies with our SPJST youth group. I saw "Flubber." It was good.

Our charities for December were toys to MASH, "Make a Smile Happen," and old phone books.

Youth Club presents Christmas program Dear Vestnik Readers, The December 14 meeting of Lodge 29 Taylor was called to order at 2:25 p.m. by President Chad Cervenka. Blake Hegar led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The register was read. There were 19 members and 12 adults present.

Guests introduced were John Grady of Taylor. Our minutes from our last meeting were unavailable. Lacy Cervenka gave the treasurer's report.

This month's social will be to go to an Ice Bats game on December 28.

The game starts at 3:05 p.m., and tickets are $7.00 per person. It will be cold, so if you plan on attending you may want to bring a blanket and jack_ et.

Also our Youth Leader, Carol Tallas, reported on several things. She talked about our social, scholarship fund, and t-shirt contest.

After our meeting we practiced our Christmas play. We put it on at the adult meeting. I think they really enjoyed it, because I know all of the youth members had lots of fun.

On December 22, we will be going to the rest home and putting on the same play for the people there.

Our meeting adjourned at 2:50.

Our next meeting will be January 11.

Hudebnici tedy sbalili v gechno, co meli, a i s nastroji se vydali do Pafi2e. Zavazadia nechali na patilskem nadra2i — to ovgem netu g ili, jak dlouho tam budou muset zustat; kdy2 na konzulate uslygeli zase ee gtinu, meli vSichni pocit uleh6eni. Ne vS'ak nadlouho.

33rd lesson. The Diminutives.

I. To denote that something is smaller than average, or that we feel certain liking in or affection to a person or a thing, or that we speak to a child and for some other reasons we use diminutive nouns. In comparison to English they are much more plentiful in Czech. Some of the frequently used suffixes (note the changes in stem vowels and final consonants of some stems):

masc.: -ek, -ik, -eeek, -leek, -inek.

Observe: dun— domek (little house),

vlak—vlieek (litle train— a toy or "choo-choo"), ostrov— ostravek, strom— stromek, nut— noIik, tatatatinek fem.: -ka, -Mut. Observe: uliceulitka (a lane), kniha— knitka (a little book, also deposit book), tetatetitka neut.: -ko, -ekko, -ieko, -itko.

Observe: pivo— pivko— pivetko (always "my favorite"beer), slunceslunko— slunitko, ucho— mak°,

oko— onto— otieko, mestomestekko, kamna— kaminka Note: The longer suffixes like -eeek, -itka mity denote higher degree of diminishing or affection than shorter suffixes like -ek. Observe: Jan— Jenik (nickname, Johnie)— Jenikek (a little boy's name, Karel— Karlik-

Karlicek, stolek— stolekek. The meaning of a diminutive is sometimes more or less different from the original noun.
