Identifying Needs and Wants

The November 12 Vestnik included two survey forms - one for adults and one for young people. Readers .were asked to complete the survey and return them to the Home Office. The results of the survey have been tabulated and forwarded to a special committee of Supreme Lodge officers and directors appointed at the October Supreme Lodge meeting. The special committee has been charged with evaluating and making recommendations to the SPJST's fraternal programming efforts.

A summary of the survey follows: The Home Office received a total of 57 completed surveys. Of these, 49 were completed by adults and eight of the responses were sent in by young people under the age of 18. In spite of this limited response, tabulations yielded some interesting results.

For instance, the first section of the adults survey encouraged respondents to identify their top five activity preferences. Seventeen options were listed.

Respondents preferences were then assigned points, based on their order of preference. Their preferences were as follows:

Of the adults who responded, 26 were currently involved in their local lodge; 23 were not involved locally.

The average age of all adult respondents was 56.

The first section of the youth survey also encouraged respondents to identify their top five activity preferences.

Both adult and youth surveys also included questions encouraging readers to identify what they liked about their membership and where they saw room for improvement. The top five adult responses to the question "What do you like best about your membership in the SPJST?" follows: • • • • •

In response to the question, "Where do you see room for improvement?", the top five areas identified were as follows: • Need to find a way to attract old and new members to meetings; • More innovative programming and marketing strategies; • Higher interest rates on annuities; • More youth involvement in community service projects; • Lower requirement on mortgage loan down payments; The top three youth responses to "What do you like best about your membership in the SPJST?" follows: • Camp; • District outings; • Friendships.

In response to the question, "Where do you see room for improvement?", five responses were received: • More outings with other youth clubs; • More members; • More socials; • More state get-togethers; • More trips.

Our Society's ability to grow and prosper relates directly to the "valueadded" benefits we are able to deliver on both the local lodge and statewide level. Thanks to all of the adults and young people who took the time to respond to the survey and to SecretaryTreasurer Lanita Anglin's department for tabulating the results.

Dear Howard, Thank you very rnuch for letting Stanley and I represent the SPJST at the Czech Embassy for the conference held October 18 and 19. The purpose of this conference was to get the Czech Republic admitted to the NATO Alliance and the Czech people of the United States to organize and get involved in public offices. It was mentioned that there are no Czechs in the Senate nor a Representative. At one time, there was one Czech Senator but he has now retired.

On Saturday afternoon, there were two conferences, which i attended one and Stanley the other. The topic of my conference was "Preservation and Development of the Czech Heritage in the USA." There were approximately 40 people attending from various organizations. Co-Chairman Clinton Machann, chairman of the board of directors of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, presided. He started off by encouraging people to organize. In his presentation and examples, he used the SPJST as how we are organized and told about our large museum and all the outstanding collections we have. This really made me proud. He passed out a leaflet as an example.

Temple area young people encouraged to enroll in pilot SPJST dance program Dear Friends, We are writing to inform you of an exciting new benefit being offered to SPJST members in good standing between the ages of 3 and 17 in the greater Temple area. It's a dance program and it is being organized as a pilot program under the guidelines set forth by the SPJST Supreme Lodge at their February 1997 meeting.

Because it is a new program, initial participation is being set at 18 girls and/or boys.

About the Class

Stanley's conference called "Present Standing and the Political Influence of the Czech American Communities in the USA" urged to organize and get involved in politics.

Sunday morning, we started with a mass in Czech which was very interesting and enjoyable. When mass was nearly over, Stanley became ill so we returned to our hotel room. So we missed the rest of the conference. We were later told that Madeleine Albright spoke.

We were also served food at the Embassy—several Czech dishes of various kinds, Czech beer and wine.

We were treated very good. We wish to thank you and the SPJST. Fraternally, Stanley and Martha Broz

Lisa Shed, a member of Lodge 47, Seaton and a professional dance instructor, will be conducting the classes at her studio, Lisa's Dance Connection, located at 118 West Avenue F in Temple. A graduate of Texas A&M University, Lisa has been owner and instructor for Lisa's Dance Connection since 1991. In addition, she is the dance instructor for Temple College's Adult Continuing Education Department. Her resume boasts numerous other professional dance credits and awards.

The following Friday schedule is being suggested: 5:30 - 6:15 p.m.

Ages 3 - 6 (Ballet, Tap) 6:15 - 7:00 p.m.

Ages 7 - 11 (Ballet, Tap, Jazz) 7:00 - 7:45 p.m.

Ages 12 and up (Jazz)

SPJST dance classes are set to begin Friday, January 16 and continue through Friday, May 1. There will be no class on April 10, which is the Friday before Easter. Cost for participating in the class is $15 per month. This amounts to a 50 percent savings over participation in comparable dance programs. The deadline to register for class is January 9. Early registration is encouraged!

The SPJST Dance Program is sponsored by the SPJST Supreme Lodge and under the general direction of the Supreme Lodge President, State Youth Director and Lodge Advisory Committee. Please note that the parents of the dancers will be responsible for the formation of the Dance Program Advisory Committee in January. All officers of the Advisory Committee will be members of the SPJST in good standing. The Advisory Committee will have the authority to make appropriate rules and regulations in writing for an orderly management of such activities.

Czech Christmas traditions and customs bring color to the season

The

excitement of the Christmas season increases every hour! Hope your holidays are brim — full of all expectations, enthusiasm, excitement and eagerness mirrored in the face of every child at Christmas.

There is so very much to learn about our world and the people who inhabit it. I want to share what I have learned about how my ancestors celebrated Christmas in the Czech Republic.

I learned mostly from Papa Will J. Cervenka, who was born in Kasava, Moravia, Czech Republic. He kept us seven children in "awe", telling us about how Christmas was celebrated in the "good old days" in his beloved country, while Mama was in the kitchen baking the traditional Christmas goodies and waiting for him to get through so we could wash the dishes.

Since 1972, my twelve trips to the Czech Republic gave me an opportunity to hear my aunts and uncle tell about the customs and traditions. They also told how Papa used to be the "ring leader" in sneaking cookies that were put away in boxes and stored on top of "hard to reach cabinets to make sure

that no uninvited finger" started on them too soon!

The upcoming Christmas will slip so swiftly into history, leaving only footprints for future generations to read about. To the best of my knowledge, I will reflect on some of the ways the Czechs celebrated Christmas long ago.

The Czechs go all out for Christmas.

Officially, the Christmas holidays begin with "Svaty Mikulas" (Saint Nicholas) on December 6, and end "On Tri Kralu" (Three Kings) named Kaspar, Melchoir, and Balthazar on January 6.

In villages a group of boys dressed in long white robes, wearing paper crowns visit homes. With a chalk that has been blessed by a priest they write the initials "KMB" and the year. This is in remembrance of the "Three Wise Men" who visited the Christ child. This is done as a blessing to the home.

The Legend of St. Nicholas

The legend of Saint Nicholas dates back to the third century. On December 6, Saint Nicholas visits all homes that have children. He wears a bishop's robe and a traditional mitre hat. He is the patron saint for children. He descends from heaven on a golden cord and has a report on all of the children's behavior. He is accompanied by an angel dressed in white. Waiting down

Lodge Let-Ws Section Lodge 5, Pilot PointTioga elects '98 officers at December meeting Our monthly meeting was held December 7 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Pilot Point and called to order by President L.E. David at 1 p.m. There were 23 members and 20 guests present. Minutes were read by Secretary Raymond David and they were accepted as read.

Vice President Sherrie Watkins gave a glowing report on growth of Lodge 5 since reorganization in February, 1996, and participation of membership. The treasurer's report was given by Diana Fuller. The report was received and carried as read.

President David asked for volunteers to coordinate the January meeting. Sherrie Watkins graciously volunteered. The January meeting will he January 11, 1998, at 12 noon at Point Bank Community Center in Pilot Point. The community center is located on Highway 377 just back of Pilot Bank, which faces Highway 377.

The Pledge of Allegiance was lead

A number of suggestions was discussed for raising funds for the building fund. At the November meeting, it was decided on a suggestion by Bill Heitzman to sell tickets for $1 each or six for $5. This money is to be put into a pot. Some time during the meeting a drawing will be held. Half of the money goes to the winner and the other half goes to the building fund. Bill also told us of something that they do at their RVOS meetings.

Our first drawing made $82.50 — half to the building fund. The winner of the drawing was Marcella Koerner.

Our first auction made $80, altogether $121.25 went into the building fund.

The item that was donated by Bill Heitzman was auctioned off by President L.E. David and was bought

by Kathy Koerner. Hey, Mr. David, you sounded good up there reeling off that auctioneering mumbo jumbo.

Maybe you missed your calling. Ha! We had a lot of fun. The enthusiasm was good, keep it up folks. President David thanked Alise Koerner for coordinating the program for the day.

The nominating committee chairman Donnie Koerner presented the slate of officers for 1998. There were no nominations from the floor. The committee's recommendations were presented one by one, voted on and approved.

18, Elgin elects officers at November meeting Lodge

Our November 18 meeting was opened with a review of the local bylaws. Mr. Joe Haisler was placed on a committee to review and update our local by-laws. Mr. Haisler stated that we were very outdated so we were not in compliance, and we need a complete redo on the by-laws. Some of the items need not be in the by-laws and they will be easier to keep up-todate. With some very helpful input

from President Leshikar and the new committee to be selected at the next meeting, this will be done. Thank you, President Leshikar, for your help and support.

The meeting was then called to order by President Jim Magonye with the pledge to the flag and silent prayer.

The roll call of officers showed all to be present. Once again, the Halloween party the youth had was very poorly attended. Ruby thanks the members who helped and donated cookies and cakes, etc. Ruby reports that next year she will try the chili supper to get a better turn out.

After the reports, President Leshikar gave a brief talk on what makes an organization successful— its cooperation and be careful what you wish for. Remember, we are models for our youth. We should be proud of what we project. After the inspirational talk and the great turn out at our meeting, we should have a great year next year. Thanks to everyone who showed up and we hope you continue to come and support your local lodge.

Czech Christmas (Continued from page 4.)

The Christmas Carp The one tradition that every household seems to maintain is the serving of carp (fish) on Christmas Eve. Families go into the streets and buy the carp. Huge wooden barrels filled with water have live carps swimming about, ready to be purchased.

Usually the carp was taken home and allowed to swim in the family tub for several days before it was killed. This was done to shed the muddy taste with frequent changing of water. Children playing with the carp grew attached to it and felt it was their pet. They could not bear to see it killed so the carp was returned to the pond or river and another was purchased.

Christmas Eve's menu was carp, potato salad, cabbage, fish soup, bread pudding, cookies and "vanocka", a loaf with raisins, candied fruit, and nuts inside. The dough is interhraided. In the Czech Republic, there was no pecans so walnuts were used.

Traditionally, the dinner tablecloth is laid over clean straw, or some straw was put on the floor beneath the table. This is a reminder that Christ was bedded upon straw in a manger, also called Bethlehem.

An even number of plates had to he set on the table, even if it meant that a neighbor had to be invited. This meant good luck.

During the meal on Christmas Eve, only the mother (hospodyne) could rise from the table. After prayer, the mother would share the oplacky, a sweet round large wafer, six inches in diameter. In the center is an important logo. These used to he baked in a monastery by nuns. The mother would begin by breaking off a piece and then sharing the wafer with others. This was a symbol of forgiveness.

A chain was laid surrounding the table, on the floor, at the end of the meal. This would keep the family together for the coming year.

Before eating started, a small portion of food was given to each animal in the household so that there will be an abundance of food throughout the year. It was believed that if you fasted (did not eat) all day on Christmas Eve, that night you would see a golden pig on the stove. As you can imagine, many who started to fast in the morning broke down at lunch time.

It was difficult with all the goodies in the kitchen. Some nibbled, but the pig knows it! So no one yet has seen the golden pig.

After the meal, gills were exchanged.

The tree usually is cut down in the forest and secretly brought into the house and hidden in the cellar. No one is supposed to see it until after the Christmas Eve dinner. Decorations were all handmadeper-Iiicky (gingerbread cookies), walnuts wrapped in silver and gold paper; chains made of multicolor construction paper; apples, oranges, and cookies made in bird, angel, dog, sheep, and star designs decorated with colorful icing and straw decorations. Religious pictures were also hung on the tree. Small candles were put in clip-on holders called zahky. These were lit and prayers were recited.

In the Czech Republic, children believe in the magic of Jezisek (Baby Jesus). He is their holiday hero who brings the gifts. To the Czech children, Santa Claus is just some fat guy in a red suit that is too big for him.

In the streets will be groups singing Christmas carols and three little boys dressed as three kings, walking through the village with one playing the trumpet. For this, they received goodies. A local band would pass through the village and play

religious Christmas songs. As they arrived house to house, a candle was lit, so that at the end of the musical journey, all the homes had a candle lit in the window.

Incense was burned in the homes to keep the evil spirit away.

For luck, herdsman would take a fir twig to each home. These were stuck on the picture frame of a saint. Shooting a gun on Christmas Eve drives away bad luck.

Czech Fortunes On Christmas Eve, each member of the family cracked 12 walnuts, each representing a month. If a spoiled one was found, that person would become ill. If it was the third walnut, your illness would be in March, the third month.

Young ladies would peel apples and as the peeling fell to the ground, it formed the initial of a future husband.

Witches at Christmas wandered through villages casting spells and doing evil mischief. People during that period carved glass canes filled with multicolored candies to distract the witches. They believed that the witches became so interested in sorting the colorful candy that the evil spells were forgotten.

Cut an apple in half, if you see a form of a star in the core you will be in good health the coming year.

Young unmarried girls stand in a room with backs to the door, pull off a shoe, toss it over the shoulder and if it lands with the toes pointing to the door, she will get married soon.

Cut a hole in the ice on a frozen lake or pond. Then look down into the water, you will see the image of your future husband. (Be wary of thin ice.)

Bones left from the Christmas Eve meal were buried under fruit trees in the orchard to assure a plentiful crop.

Midnight Mass Attending midnight mass was a must.

Many people walked long distances to get there. Along the way, they sang Christmas carols and also they could hear the shepherds playing the bag pipes at the mountainside where sheep were grazing.

As you entered a home there was a nativity scene under the Christmas tree and a plate of fruit and coins signifying prosperity and blessing.

The word Christmas is derived from medieval "Christes Masse" (Mass of Christ). This is a feast commemorating the birth of Christ, observed annually on December 25. The traditional Christmas Day menu includes goose, duck, vegetables, potatoes, and desserts.

New Year's Eve (Silvestr) for many Czechs is a low-key affair celebrated with family and friends in some hospoda (club), a weekend cottage, or just in their home proposing pripilek (toast), cheers to health (na ase zdravi), eating chlebicky (small open-faced sandwiches), and popping champagne at midnight.

On New Year's Eve, no one eats poultry or any other feather source food who does not want their good luck to fly away with the old year.

On New Year's Day, the menu is ham or pork and always lentil beans. The beans symbolize good fortune in the coming year.

Then, as the old saying goes "Whatever you are doing on New Year's Day, you will be doing all year long."

38, Kovar reports on recent meetings, activities Lodge

The September, October and November meetings were held on the third Monday of each month. Johnnie Janak opened these meetings with the Pledge of Allegiance followed-by the minutes which were read by Joe Sulak.

Jerry Faust gave the treasurer's report.

In September, we held our annual fund raiser, a chicken and stew dinner followed by an auction. This was a great success. We also celebrated SPJST's 100th anniversary.

In the October meeting, after the opening, pledge and minutes, the treasurer gave a complete report on costs and profits of the fund raiser.

In the November meeting, we discussed the New Year's Eve dance, and in December, we will finalize this.

SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, November 19, 1997, at 6:30 p.m. with 23 members and guests present. Everyone enjoyed cold cuts, potato salad and chocolate, coconut and lemon pies. fresident Bennie Reck presided and led the pledge to the flag, followed by a moment of silent prayer for our ill and deceased members.

Delores Valigura made a motion, with a second by Charlene Borak, to donate $25 for the living Hospice and $25 for the deceased Hospice celebration of life Christmas tree.

We had a very special guest from the Home Office attend our meeting.

Our delicious turkey meal was served on Sunday, November 16 at the lodge hall to 39 people. Thanks to Rose Stavinoha, Dorothy Kuban and Benita Walzel for preparing the turkeys and to Willie Mae also for the donation of the turkeys and dressing to the above families. Your donations are appreciated deeply.

Around 11 a.m., the people began to arrive. Coffee was ready. Soon everyone sat around and visited and sipped on a delicious cup of coffee. At 12 noon, President Macha said the meal blessing. Then, the delicious meal was ready to be devoured. Thanks to all who brought the tasty side dishes and desserts.

—SPJSTWith our tummies full and the clock showing 1 p.m., it was time to begin the meeting. Elsie Brdecka led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The roll call was answered by all of the officers. The usual procedure followed. Willie Mae Kuykendall, our secretary, read the minutes of the previous month's meeting, then Benita Walzel, our treasurer, gave her report followed by Gilbert Walzel, our Special Fund Chairman, reading the schedule of events for the upcoming month and his financial report. All three reports were accepted as read.

Lodge 81 is sad to report the death of our member, Olga Polasek of Wharton. Olga attended our meetings regularly and we will miss her very much. Sympathy is extended to her family. May she rest in peace.

New on the sick list is Johnnie Blinka and Emil Bezecny. Others still ailing are Rosie Schwettmann, Bernie Tielke, Jerry Blinka, Adeline Bacica, Emil Pollock, Gladys Maresh, and Bill Miller. Get well wishes are sent to the above and others who are sick.

It was voted upon by the lodge to donate $100 to Needville High School Project Graduation and $50 to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund.

President Macha thanked Brother Gilbert Walzel for repairing all of the broken chairs. This is appreciated.

Christmas Party December 21 Next on the agenda was the discussion about our Christmas party which will be held after the December meeting is over which is on Sunday, December 21, 1997. Vincent Newman is in charge of locating Santa for us.

Santa was reminded last year to mark his calendar for our SPJST Christmas party. We hope he did not forget.

President Macha and his wife Dolores will decorate the tree and hall. Winnie Susan and Benita Walzel are going to fix bags of fruit and candy. Dorothy Kuban will send Christmas cards to the shut-ins. It was voted upon to give ten $5 prizes. Everyone come. Bring the grandchildren to see Santa. It is going to be a lot of fun.

Thanksgiving has come and gone.

It is our hope that everyone took time to count all of their many blessings.

The weather was nice. In fact, some had to use the air conditioner.

There has been some rain. The Friday after Thanksgiving everyone received about a half inch. Early Wednesday morning, December 3, wind, lightening, thunder and hardorain occurred. Most areas received in the two-and-one-half inch amounts, which we did not need.

Our next meeting is Sunday, December 21, 1997, at the lodge hall.

Ham and sausage will be served.

Darlene Blinka, Emma Kujawa, and Benita Walzel have volunteered to fix the hams. Thanks, ladies. The rest of us need to bring a vegetable or salad and dessert. Invite someone to come with you. We will sing Christmas carols and remember Santa will make his appearance. Anyone who can play a musical instrument, bring it along.

Christmas is a wonderful time for us to get together.

Sister Fay Rejcek, right, of Lodge 84, Dallas, introduced State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Barbara Rosenkranz at a recent meeting of Lodge 84, Dallas. Sister Rosenkranz delivered an enjoyable presentation on the important role fraternal activities play in the lodge and community.

Congratulations to Brother Ben Jarma who received his 50year membership pin. Thanks to Sister Rosenkranz for making the presentation.

Lodge 84, Dallas accepting reservations for New Year's Eve New Year's Eve Dance is just around the corner. This year, we will have a battle dance. Music will be by the Vanek Czech Band and the Kaluza Polka Band. Dance time will be 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Tickets are now available. Advance tickets for adults are $10 and for teens are $3. If you wait and get your tickets at the door the charge will be $12 for adults and $4 for teens.

92, Fort Worth hosts Toys for Tots drive Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, By now lots of the SPJST lodges are having or getting ready to have their Christmas parties.

On December 3, Lodge 92 donated the use of the hall for the annual Toys for Tots for the needy and homebound children. This year, it was the Lone Star Music Association that put on the Toys for Tots. All you needed to attend was an unwrapped new toy.

This music association was in charge of this program. Lodge 92 and many grocery stores gave food items to be served during the dance. The meal consisted of turkey and all that goes with the free dinner. There were also lots of pastries. During the program lots of talented singers sang real nice songs. One small girl, about 8 or 9 years old, did a dance while skipping a rope; she was very good and did not make any mistakes.

The Lone Star Music Association thanks the members of our lodge for the donation of the hall. The personnel in charge of this program are Alan Shepard, president; Rose Jeffus, advisor; Janie Wood, treasurer; and Jack Pike, public relations director. This is just one of the things our lodge does to help keep us from a few taxes being a fraternal.

Our annual Christmas party for adults was December 9 and it turned out very good; however, the weather did not cooperate too well as it started to rain in the morning about 9 a.m. and did not let up until 10:30 p.m. A very nice crowd attended the party and dance. The members of our Lodge 92 were admitted free and guests were asked to pay $6. The Sulak band from Ennis, Texas, played polkas and

waltzes and modern music. Everyone really enjoyed the music. Brother Frank Prochaska and a few members volunteered to get the snacks ready that were free to everyone. It was Mexican-style food, with tacos, cheese dips, and lots of other food. The lodge pays for this but someone has to be in charge, so good old Frank Prochaska seen that all was ready to eat. Joyce Tesar, the manager, had the hall decorated so pretty for this occasion.

Lots of people say how beautiful the lodge hall is and that it is always kept, clean. It is a shame that many of our members live out of town and are unable to attend the activities we have during the year. But this doesn't mean that we do not miss you. We understand that you live so many miles from Fort Worth.

During intermission, our past president Gordon Hubenak installed the new officers that will serve the lodge for 1998.

The sick list seems a lot better as now it is a few that are sick. Brother James Greer fell two different times and on the same knee. The first time he fell, he had to have fluid drained off but not the second time. He did not break any bones so that was good to hear. Dick Durham is back on the dancing floor after an operation (his wife says he had to have the plumbing repaired) so the doctor told him to drink lots of beer. Sister Mary Polonvich broke her hip so it had to be replaced. She is now in a rehab for a short time and then will go to a rest home. Mary Pulliam is back in the hospital with blood clots in her legs so she will be at All Saints for several days. Christine had to have a little work on the eye that had the cataract but all is now well. To others that might be under the weather, get well soon because Christmas is a few days off.

Carol Z. Everett is really not quite well but she keeps the faith and would like to be at home during the holidays.

The Lodge 139 Christmas social, held at E.J.'s Restaurant on December 3 was a big success. Good conversation and fellowship prevailed. Four members went home with door prizes provided by Secretary Lorenda Baldwin. Rhenda Dickerson won a beautifully decorated Christmas candle. A decorated ceramic boot filled with foil-covered chocolate bells went to Jared Brimage for guessing closest to the number of bells in the hoot.

Jalene Baldwin and Helen Filipp each went home with a hummingbird feeder.

If the spring hummer migration brings as many birds through this area as it did this fall, they will be hard pressed to keep the feeders full.

During the brief business meeting preceding the meal, it was brought out that 51 Lodge 139 members will receive turkeys in time for Christmas.

Those who live too great a distance for delivery will receive checks instead of the turkeys.

Saturday, November 15 was a gala affair at the Milan Gallery. Guests were greeted from the winter cold by Sister Henrietta Milan's warm Czech smile. Henrietta looked radiant in her black velvet jacket with geometric, beaded designs. What a wonderful evening! The artist's reception and show of 21 new paintings by Henrietta which were inspired from her recent sojourn in Italy. Areas represented by the magic of her palette knife were Brdigera, Italy, and Giverny, France, the home of Claude Monet. One of the most outstanding pieces was a painting of the artist herself admiring Monet's own garden. The beautiful mirrored walls and the exquisite crystal chandelier made a magnificent background for her beautiful paintings. Henrietta has not only mastered Monet's style of painting with light but has taken it to new heights. The evening Was graced by the ingenious talent of Charles Duke who serenaded the guests with his repertoire of melodies in his own unique, harmonious style.

On November 13 to 16, Boswell High School performed "Once Upon a Mattress," a hilarious comedy based on the children's story, "The Princess and the Pea." Our own Brandon Mason played the multi-talented and gregarious jester. His spectacular chartreuse and royal blue costume stood out among the rest. Brandon took down the house acting and singing and tumbling across the stage. His gestures, make-up, and facial expressions certainly made him a favorite of the crowd. Brandon, a sophomore, is a member of the Speech and Debate club, Student Council, Thespian, Teen Drama and a member of his high school gymnastic team which is led by Rome Milan. He plans to pursue a career in college in Theatre Arts.

Kudos to you, Brandon, and here's wishing you success in your theatrical career!

We would like to express our condolences to the family of Frank Tesar who recently passed away. He was a faithful member of SPJST and will be greatly missed in our Czech community.

A warm welcome to Sister Katheryn Garrison, cousin to the Milan family, who has moved back to Fort Worth.

She is all moved in and settling down to a happy family lifestyle.

Hat's off to our B.J. Cleveland who has directed the delightful Christmas play, "It's a Wonderful World." It runs from December 4 to December 20 at Theatre Arlington, located at 701 Main Street in Arlington, Texas. It is a true classic and a wonderful treat for the holidays!

County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas Harris

It's been a full year for the Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. The Czech Spring Fest, always on Palm Sunday, was a resounding success.

Guests were impressed with the authentic sounds of Kovanda's Czech Band of Fayetteville as well as the exquisite display of Czech Easter Eggs by Susie and Noreen Tolman.

These and a few new surprises will be in store for festival-goers at the 1998 Czech Spring Fest on Palm Sunday, April 5 at St. Christopher's Parish Hall, 8150 Park Place Boulevard, Houston. Clinton Machann of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas was the guest speaker His lecture on the progress of Czech organizations in Texas was well-received. He also informed the listeners about the upcoming Best Fest, the SPJST 100 year anniversary in Belton on July 12 and 13, and the joint conference by the Czechoslovak Arts and Sciences Society (SVU).

The Harris County Chapter's annual summer social WETS held at the Italian Cultural and Community Center on Sunday, August 31.

Members brought delicious casseroles and pastries for the pot-luck meal and George Janecka and Jim Elles gave lessons in playing tarok, a Czech card game.

Concho and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society Runnels,

The last quarterly meeting of the Runnels, Concho, and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society of the Concho Valley was held November 23, 1997.

Michael Jakubove of Lucenec, Slovak Republic, was a guest speaker.

He spoke English as he described the country and the division of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic.

Since the Velvet Revolution, both states enjoy freedom which was impossible under the Communists.

He studied English for three years before coming here as an exchange student. His host family is Brad and Pam Teplicek and their son, Drake, of Iowa Park, Texas.

Michael is a senior at Iowa Park High School. He would like to come back if he gets a scholarship. His father is a construction engineer and his mother owns a bakery and is a teacher. His parents are business owners, which was not possible before 1989. Michael wants to take over his father's business after he graduates from college.

Details will need to be addressed, for which President Kokes has called a planning meeting for January 4, 1998, at 2 p.m. in the SPJST hall. Officers, directors, and volunteers are asked to help with the task.

The Conch° Valley Czech Heritage Society meetings scheduled for next year are February 15, May 17, August 16, and November 15.

County Czech Heritage Society reports on December meeting

The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society met for their annual Christmas party at the First Christian Church on Tuesday, December 2 at 7 p.m. Ninety members were present.

Rev. Keith Gibbons, pastor of the First Christian Church, gave the prayer before the dinner. Many members brought authentic Czech food which was enjoyed by all.

President Marie Matcek opened the meeting by having members recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and singing "Kde Domov Muj," the Czech National Anthem. Father Benton Thurmond of Inez gave the prayer for the meeting.

Two special guests were introduced. They were Robert Gerzeni from Bardejou, Republic of Slovakia, and Sebastian Kacmarek of Gera, Germany. Both are students in El Campo High School and are living with Dan and Martha Marek. The students told of their impressions of living in El Campo.

Josie Kriebel, who is a member of the Golden Age Club, presented a speaker system to the chapter. The speaker system is a gift from the club and very much appreciated as it will help the chapter with conducting their meetings.

The members voted to help with sending out the state newspaper, "Cesky Hlas." Several members volunteered to help with this project.

For the program, the members enjoyed a sing-along of Czech and English Christmas carols accompanied by Ethel Kuzell Meek on the piano and Frank Milder on the accordion.

There were door prizes and a raffle for a Czech doll. The meeting ended with members playing a game of "right and left" which was an exchange of gifts.

The next meeting will be in March.

As its name suggests, the directory seeks to provide a listing of SPJST sales representatives and members who are in positions to provide various products and services for other SPJST members. The directory is published for the sole use of our members and is based on the idea of "members helping members."

There is no charge for directory listings and the only prerequisite is that you are an SPJST member.

As in the past, the directory will include the broadest range of service providers. Everything from accountants, auto mechanics and caterers to musicians, beauticians and builders. Part-time business owners and those who produce seasonal commodities — ranging from hay to firewood -are also encouraged to participate.

Only those listings which are deemed "questionable" or those which promote life insurance or other financial products available through the SPJST, will not be printed in the directory.

If your listing appeared in the 1997 SPJST Member Services Directory, it is not necessary for you to resubmit your entry -- only additions or changes. Considering

that quite a few telephone area codes changed this year, you may need to mail or fax in your corrected telephone number.

In addition to, we will again be including lodge listings in the 1997 directory. These listings will include directions to the lodge hall and a contact name for more information. In the case of lodges without buildings, only a contact name will be listed. Please check

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville, express our most sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed sister,

OLGA JULIA POLASEK, who passed away on Saturday, November 8, 1997, at her home following a sudden illness.

Mrs. Polasek was born on November 28, 1918, in Rabs Prairie, Texas, to Ben and Lily Pilcik Bednar. She married Ludwig Polasek in La Grange, Texas, on March 11, 1940. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1976.

She worked in the Food Service Department for 20 years with the Brazosport ISD and recently in Wharton 1SD until her retirement in 1985. She was a resident of Lake Jackson from 1944 to 1973.

She has been a resident of Wharton for the past 24 years and was a Catholic by faith. She was also a member of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville and she loved to play bingo.

A rosary was held on Monday, November. 10, 1997, at 7:30 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. The funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11 at the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Plumb, Texas, with Father Jerome Styke officiating. Burial was in the Paul Catholic Church Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Rosie and James Cunningham of Wharton; sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Wayne and Martha Polasek of Brazoria and Ludwig Joe Polasek of Clute; sisters, Frances Korenek of Canyon Lake and Jean Tennent of Jacksonville, Florida; brother, Alvin Bednar of Tempe, Arizona; grandchildren, Allen Cunningham and wife Kerrie of Wharton, Joseph Chad Polasek of Clute and Shelly Rapuel Polasek of Dallas; a great-grandson Jared Clute of Hudson, TeXas; and close friends and companion, Bobby Kopecky and Georgia Helmcamp of Wharton.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Zvonek.

Pallbearers were Louis Kadlecek, Gene Kadlecek, Gene Polasek, Allen Cunningham, Chad Polasek, and Otto Korenek.

Mrs. Dorotik was born June 24, 1908, to Joe Sliva and Julie Mazoc Sliva.

Martha married Frank Dorotik on December 29, 1926, in Rowena. She was a homemaker, a member of St.

Claire of Assissi Catholic Church in League City and a member of Lodge 49, Rowena.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Cain of Houston and Mildred Polasek of League City.

Rosary was held Friday, November 21 in the Rains Seale Chapel. Services were held Saturday, November 22 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Stephen Kennelly officiating. Burial followed in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Rowena, under the direction of Rains-Seale Funeral Home.

PARMA, age 73 of Waco, who passed away Wednesday evening, November 19, 1997, at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco.

A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

November 21 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West by the Rev. Timothy Vaverek. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 am.

November 22 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Belimead with the Rev. Timothy Vaverek officiating. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery near West.

Sister Parma was born January 30, 1924, in McLennan County, Texas, to John and Rosie Matus. She married Joe Parma on January 29, 1946, in West.

He preceded her in death on November 21, 1975. She was a homemaker and enjoyed her polka music, gardening and canning. She was a member of KJZT, SPJST Lodge 54, West for over 50 years, and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Belimead.

She was preceded in death by a twin brother, Rudolph Matus, and a sister, Barbara Ann Matus.

Survivors include two sons, James Parma and his wife Patricia and Ray Parma and his wife Rose, both of Elm Mott; one daughter, Janice Allison and her husband Kerry of Northcrest; two brothers, Albin Matus of Bellmead and Jolinny Matus of Irving; two sisters, Willie Mae Pustejovsky of Abbott and JoAnn Cepak of Bellmead; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Joe Foit, Gordon Cambell, Jason Parma, Thomas Parsons, John Mott and Greg Hammermeister.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements.

Texas Fraternal Congress an Enjoyable Experience

SPJST Young People Enjoy Texas Fraternal Congress

Dear Youth Club Members, On October 20, 1997, J.J. and I attended the Texas Fraternal Congress in Abilene, Texas. I met many people from around the state. I really enjoyed the Youth Spectacular and the entertainer. He was really funny.

There were many youth from my district, so I wasn't very lonely. When we arrived in Abilene, it was not cold; however, when we left Sunday morning, it was freezing. All in all, I really enjoyed the experience. I had a lot of fun.

See you all in Temple at the Christmas Parade. I really looking forward to it.

Dear Readers, As your State King, I have been representing you in a lot of parades. Queen Elizabeth Wagner from Lodge 4, Hallettsville and I attended the 97th Annual Texas Fraternal Congress on October 25 in Abilene at the Embassy Suites. The Texas Fraternal Congress provided an opportunity for young people from various fraternal organizations to showcase their talent.

Elizabeth and I presented our speeches and served as emcees during the Youth Spectacular program. The SPJST was represented by the youth group from Lodge 160, San Angelo performing the "Hokey Pokey"; Camille Staff of Lodge 30, Taiton performing "Ghostbusters"; Stacey Branham of Lodge 185, New Braunfels performing his "Armed Individual Drill"; and the youth group from Lodge 30, Taiton performing the "Patriotic Medley."

Other fraternal organizations that performed were the youth group from the. Woodmen of the World Lodge 4557 who performed the "Flag Presentation" and the Order of the Sons of Hermann youth group from Linda Jones's dance studio who performed five dancing routines.

After the program, we all changed into our western wear for an old-fashioned barbecue at Lytle Bend Ranch, but due to a bad cold front that came in during the afternoon it was changed to have the caterers to come to the Hotel. We were entertained with live music, singing and dancing.

Elizabeth and I have three more appearances to attend — the Temple Parade, Polka Festival Parade, and the Fourth of July Parade in Shiner. I do hope all of the readers come out and cheer us on because it means a lot to us to see other faces others than our parents and relatives. Once again, thank you for your support and hope to see you all soon!

The meetings were to he held monthly in conjunction with Austin Ethnic Historical Association, the umbrella group of all the ethnic groups. The following officers were elected at this meeting: Bess Curry, President (now Bess Bradshaw) Raymond Prasitak, Treasurer Bobbie Smykal, Secretary Alfred Vrana was president for the next four years following Beth (Curry) Bradshaw. Our current officers are: President Pavia (Adamik) Van Bibber who has been serving for six years, Vice President Petr Obrda, Treasurer Clarence Boriski, and Secretary Joseph Peters. We meet at the Community Room at Bank One on Bee Caves Road in Austin on the fourth Monday of each month.

We stay very active making Czech foreign visitors and the Austin community aware of the Czech culture in Texas. We have participated at Czech Night at the Austin Aqua Festival and Austin Folk Festival at Fiesta Gardens.

We have participated at Caldwell Kolache Festival for the last four years.

Our biggest event of the year is sponsoring Czech Night for the last three years, celebrating Czech Week in Texas with Czech-style food and entertainment, a night to remember for all.

Czech Historical Association of Austin Presents Scenes from Czech Night October 17, 1997 • Austin, Texas • Omni Southpark Hotel

Austin Community College offers Czech language classes The instructor for the Czech language classes will be Daniela Skvorva Beck, Ph.D. She is a native Czech speaker from Prague, Czech Republic.

Her Ph.D. is in Czech language teaching from Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. She has experience in teaching Czech in a foreign language school in Prague to English-speaking foreigners. Her teaching experience also includes tutoring and teaching Czech classes at UT Austin.

In celebration of Czech Heritage Week in Texas, the Czech Historical Association of Austin hosted its Third Annual Czech night on Friday, October 17.

participate in two-day conference with Czech ambassador Texans

(Editor's Note: Several Texans representing the SPJST and various Czech heritage and cultural organizations in Texas attended a two-day conference hosted by Czech Ambassador to the U.S. Alexandr Vondra at the Embassy in Washington, D.C. on October 18 and 19. Thanks to Retta Chandler, president of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc. for submitting the following summary of that event.)

The theme of the conference was "The Czech Republic and Czech Americans on Their Way to a Common Future." Representatives of Czech American organizations from around the U.S. came together to exchange their respective opinions, experiences, and goals for the future.

Participants were pleasantly surprised with the unexpected arrival of Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, at noon on Sunday. Her brief address to the conference stressed the importance of the Czech Republic being accepted into NATO. Even though the invitation has been extended, its acceptance depends on ratification by the U.S. Senate.

Ambassador Vondra, in his opening remarks to approximately 80 individuals, expressed as one of his priorities the desire to improve the communication and cooperation between Czech Americans in the U.S. and Czechs in the Czech Republic. The presence of the Czech Senate delegation led by former ambassador to the U.S., Senator Zantovsky, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Defense and Security Committee of the Czech Senate, underscored the importance of this conference.

The Ambassador conveyed his gratitude for the outpouring of donations for those who suffered losses in the recent floods. He said that since so much damage was done, it will take awhile to restore those parts of the country to normal.

One of the main tasks facing Czech Americans now is the preservation of our rich heritage. Participants pledged to support the establishment of a Cultural Heritage Commission, which would incorporate representatives of various Czech organizations in North America. The last paragraph of this resolution states, "we will do our best to preserve the Czech cultural heritage in North America, and we call on all interested men and women to help us in this endeavor — particularly in efforts to encourage our children to learn about their heritage — and to establish and promote cultural and language programs throughout the U.S., as well as educational exchanges with the Czech Republic.

The resolution echoes the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center's Mission Statement: ". . . to provide a central facility for the preservation and promotion of the history, language, culture and heritage of individuals of Czech ethnicity who can trace their ancestry to the Czechs who immigrated from present-day Czech Republic or the former Austro-Hungarian Empire (including Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia and Silesia), to honor those immigrants, and to operate exclusively for charitable, scientific, literary and educational purposes."

Plans are underway for the development of the Czech Cultural Center in LaGrange, Texas. The lease agreement with the City of LaGrange for 56 acres of land adjacent to the county fairgrounds has recently been signed. An administrative assistant will be hired soon, and a large sign designating the future site of the Center has been erected on the highway frontage of the property.

Czech Ambassador visits Houston Lunch on Thursday, November 20 at the Rosene residence was the scene of a meeting between the Czech Ambassador to the U.S. Mr. Alexandr Vondra, Honorary Czech Consul for the Southern Half of Texas, Mr. Raymond J. Snokhous and Effie and Bill Rosene.

Effie Rosene is the Chairman of the Board for the Czech Cultural Center in Houston. Mr. Vondra expressed a keen interest in the Center and its opportunity to promote education and culture and public relations between the Houston area, Texas, and the U.S. and the Czech land. He had participated in an Economic Conference at Texas A&M University in College Station the previous evening. A status report of the Center indicates a desperate need for a physical facility to house a museum, concert hall, teaching rooms, library and archives to accommodate its many activities and genealogy research, restaurant and welcome and information center on all things Czech. While pursuing finan cial support since its inception as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational cultural institution on March 8, 1996, the organization is at a point where it must consider professional assistance in fundraising in the very near future. Its intent is to locate in or near the museum district with a first class presence in a world class facility to represent the over one million of Czech heritage in the State and those many thousands in the Houston area. Its intent is also to be an asset to the City's cultural environment.

Prior to departure for Washington and the Embassy, the Ambassador was duly impressed on touring the Czech Center's all volunteer managed CCC Market Place Gift Shop of Czech imports located in Northwest Mall. Crystal, porcelain, pottery, books, toys and other gift items are sold which benefits the building fund. The Czech Center Houston, along with a Czech Texas Chamber of Commerce that was developed last year, will certainly lead to future visits to Houston and other cities in Texas by the Ambassador.

Author awarded International book prize

Oxford University recently announced the winner of the 1996 Orbis Book Prize in Czech and Slovak Studies. Awarded to an outstanding work of scholarship .dealing with East Central Europe, the Orbis prize for 1996 goes to Borders of Language and Identity in Teschen Silesia by Kevin Hannan. Dr. Hannan is the author of numerous articles on the Slavic languages, histories and cultures.

Published in 1996 by Peter Lang Publishing of New York, Borders of Language and Identity in Teschen Silesia is a multidisciplinary study of the Silesia , border region which includes the cities of Ostrava and Frydek-Mistek in the Czech Republic.
