My-husband proudly states that he is Czech. This pride of his heritage courses through his veins directly transfused from his now deceased grandfather. Grandpa Brosh could not read or write but had a profound effect on his grandson. Though he was illiterate, he told rich stories about his family. This exceptional ability spurred his grandson's need to learn more.

Although many of the stories shared by Grandpa were fictitious, some were startling close to being true. The memory of these stories are sometimes resurrected through visits with other family members or events that make one's mind focus on the past. Unfortunately, many of these stories that were related or recalled seem to be like most of the puzzles in our house. The outside pieces are there, but inside vital pieces are missing. Adult and Juvenile Whole Life. A whole life product designed for both young and mature applicants that offers affordable premium and builds cash value.

Adult and Juvenile 20-Payment Life. A whole life product designed for both young and mature applicants with premiums payable for twenty years. Issued to ages 0 through 60.

Annual Renewable Term (ART). A

one year term product that automatically renews each year with applicable premiums. Issued to ages 16 through 65. Can be converted to permanent insurance prior to age 65. Term expires at age 70.

A flexible protection plan issued to ages 0 to 80 which offers both a guaranteed and current interest rate on the cash value accumulation.

Universal Life.

Term to Age 65. Offers affordable term coverage with issue ages 16 through 44. Convertible to permanent insurance prior to age 65.

Protector Plan. Designed as a reducing term insurance plan on two lives over a 20-, 25-, or 30-year period.

Pays off on the death of the first insured. Premums are calculated on combination of two insureds ages.

Can be used as a mortgage cancellation plan.

Twenty-, Twenty-five- and Thirty-

Year-Decreasing Terms. Offer affordable coverage with reducing (decreasing) death benefit applicable for selected period of time.

Tiny Tatting Bridges Past

by Barbara Rosenkranz State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Sister Pauline Shiller has a charming smile, beautiful white hair and dark blue eyes with an adventurous gleam in them. I met her recently at SPJST Lodge No. 49, Rowena, during the District Four and Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society's Second Annual Czech Fest. Sister Pauline's father, Doctor John J. Shiller, was a prestigious country doctor in Praha and Rowena, Texas from 1903 until 1953.

Dr. Shiller's antique car phone, saddle bags and other medical items were donated to the SPJST museum by the

"The SPJST 100th Anniversary tarok poster carries the signature of one of the truly great men of our time — the President of the Czech Republic — leader of the Velvet Revolution and the man most responsible for the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia," says Sister Rosenkranz.

—SPJSTShiller family years ago. The Shiller display delights thousands of visitors annually. SPJST Museum Curator Dorothy Pechal often regales visiting children with stories of how Dr. Shiller was frequently paid for his service in butter, eggs and chickens.

Louis Kokes, President of the Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society, and Stanley Broz, SPJST District Four Director, and SPJST Lodge 49 President Elizabeth Walther invited the SPJST Traveling MiniMuseum to be a part of the Concho Valley Czech Heritage Festival hosted

by SPJST Lodge 49 on October 25th.

While viewing some of the items in the museum display, Sister Pauline noticed a plastic bag full of needlework tatting and recognized the donor's name. She

excitedly proclaimed to her cousin Clint McPherson from Lubbock, Texas, that she knew the donor's daughter-in-law who lived just a few blocks from the lodge hall.

With refrains of Czech music dancing through the autumn air, Sister Shiller took my arm and off we went to visit Mrs. Edith Kopecky. We were going to show her the antique tatting made years ago by her mother-in-law.

Mrs. Kopecky is a spirited lady, 99 years of age (as of October 9, 1997).

She delighted Ms. Shiller and me with her wit and stories of by-gone days.

Sister Edith said when she was a young bride, Mrs. Josephine (Malinak) Kopecky had taken her 'under wing' and taught her the Czech ways. As a busy mother, wife and school teacher Edith would rely many times on the expert advice of her beloved mother-in-law, Josephine. Later Ms. Shiller drove me to the old Rowena school house where Mrs. Edith Kopecky had spent a great part of her life teaching. In the bright West Texas sun, I imagined how different it must have been 50, 60, 70 years ago.

The afternoon of October 25th was indeed pleasant. Meeting Mrs. Kopecky and Ms. Shiller was a special experience I'll never forget. We conversed with no evident generation gap despite the span of 60 years. When we asked Mrs. Kopecky to take a picture for the Vestnik, she agreed and asked for a comb. I assured her that she radiated a natural beauty and looked picture perfect. In fact the day itself turned out to be picture perfect in weather, friendship and adventure.

So it was, that on the weekend of the Second Annual Czech Fest — a tiny bridge was built across generations and cultures for a short span of a sunny afternoon. That tiny bridge was a fragile bit of tatting made many years ago by a Czech woman who cared very much for her family.

That fond remembrance and many more like it are perpetuated through displays at the SPJST Museum in Temple, Texas. Otto Hanus, first SPJST Museum Curator, was the man who worked diligently to perpetuate the past for future generations of Czechs. Thanks to the foresight of dedicated members like Brother Hanus, and families like the Shiller's who have donated to the SPJST Museum, those tiny little bridges to the past continue to be built every day.

Kathy Fritz, assistant to the Vice President, installs the new insurance illustration software on a notebook computer as Vice President Leonard Mikeska and State Field Manager Gene McBride look on.

The software improves service to the sales force and SPJST members by providing illustrations on all basic plans offered by SPJST. Kathy served as liaison with the software developer and wrote the manual enabling users to install and use the software in a minimum amount of time.

The software is available to all sales representatives who have computers with the required minimums.

Home Fires (Continued from page 1.) these missing pieces made my husband yearn to visit the Czech Republic.

Three years ago, my husband Dennis and I took our two young sons on a journey of discovery. We went to visit the village from which his greatgrandfather immigrated from in 1871.

Our journey led us to visit Mnisi in the state of Moravia. Our desire was to find the roots to our family.

The area near Mnisi is quite similar to the Texas Hill Country. The sloping hills abound with rolls of hay. There were some haystacks on the fields— like the ones that old-time farmers made in Texas. The tiny village of about 600 people was surrounded by rolling farming land. The smell of freshly cut hay lingered in the air. The warmth of the August sun and the beauty of the rolling hills made me feel as if I were in Texas.

Up around another curve we spotted a white rectangular metal sign declaring "Mnisi". When we saw the tiny Catholic Church, we turned left onto a small paved road. An old bike was parked in front of the only store we saw, so we stopped to buy refreshments.

Inside, two middle-aged ladies talked quietly and watched as we looked around. The ladies seemed to watch our every move, yet never said anything to us. We tried our few Czech phrases.

"Do you know any Broz's?" They shook their heads nervously, giggled softly then turned away. We left with our bottled Canadian water and melting ice cream cones.

With no phone book or address, we decided to wander around. Our large van barely crept up the curvy, narrow road. We searched for signs or another store, but we found that we had visited the only store. We spotted an old lady who was walking to the store and asked her if she knew any Broz's. It seemed as if she feared strangers, even in her own village. Fortunately, when we had paused to ask this lady, another villager had been watching us.

This fellow was standing on his upstairs front porch, listening to our questions. He had heard our meager attempt at Czech and then our German questions. He yelled down in German that he knew of two "Broz" families.

He pointed to a hill where we could see a house. With great anticipation, we started the big van and crept up the narrow road toward the hill.

I guess it was probably only 100 yards before we decided the van could not make it up the narrow lane that led to the house. We parked the van and began the hike up to a large white house. When we knocked, a shirtless old man met us at the door. He spoke only Czech and Russian but seemed pleased that we had come for a visit.

Through broken Czech and sign language we learned he was a Broz, that he never married and then he pointed to another lane and said that there was another Broz home. After our limited language ran out, we took a picture of this Broz, shook hands and left.

As we began to hike up the steep lane to the other house, we were met by a Skoda, the tiniest car imaginable.

Lodge 1, Fayetteville celebrates Christmas with Chamber of Commerce December 14 SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville is looking forward to the holiday season and is busy preparing for another joint Christmas party with the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce. The date is set for Sunday, December 14, 1997, at 5:30 p.m. at the historic SPJST Hall in Fayetteville.

area young people encouraged to enroll in pilot SPJST dance program Temple

Dear Friends, We are writing to inform you of an exciting new benefit being offered to SPJST members in good standing between the ages of 3 and 17 in the greater Temple area It's a dance program and it is being organized as a pilot program under the guidelines set forth by the SPJST Supreme Lodge at their February 1997 meeting.

Because it is a new program, initial participation is being set at 18 girls and/or boys.

About the Class

Lisa Shed, a member of Lodge 47, Seaton and a professional dance instructor, will be conducting the classes at her studio, Lisa's Dance Connection, located at 118 West Avenue F in Temple. A graduate of Texas A&M University, Lisa has been owner and instructor for Lisa's Dance Connection since 1991. In addition, she is the dance instructor for Temple College's Adult Continuing Education Department. Her resume boasts numerous other professional dance credits and awards.

The following Friday schedule is being suggested: 5:30 - 6:15 p.m.

Ages 3 - 6 (Ballet, Tap) 6:15 - 7:00 p.m.

Ages 7 - 11 (Ballet, Tap, Jazz) 7:00 - 7:45 p.m.

Ages 12 and up (Jazz)

SPJST dance classes are set to begin Friday, January 16 and continue through Friday, May 1. There will be no class on April 10, which is the Friday before Easter. Cost for participating in the class is $15 per month. This amounts to a 50 percent savings over participation in comparable dance programs. The deadline to register for class is January 9. Early registration is encouraged!

The SPJST Dance Program is sponsored by the SPJST Supreme Lodge and under the general direction of the Supreme Lodge President, State Youth Director and Lodge Advisory Committee. Please note that the parents of the dancers will be responsible for the formation of the Dance Program Advisory Committee in January. All officers of the Advisory Committee will be members of the SPJST in good standing. The Advisory Committee will have the authority to make appropriate rules and regulations in writing for an orderly management of such activities.

Lodge 5, Pilot PointTioga honors 50-year members Our monthly meeting on November 16, 1997, was called to order by L.E. David, President, at 2:30 p.m. He then called for the Pledge of Allegiance.

The prayer was given by Jack Carender. The minutes of the October meeting were read by Elise Koerner in the absence of Secretary Raymond David. A motion was made and seconded and the minutes were approved as read. The treasurer's report was given by Alise Koerner. The report was approved as read.

President David discussed various ways to raise money for our building fund. A suggestion was given by Bill Heitzman, the RVOS representative.

At their meetings, each one attending would donate $1 (optional). This money goes into a pot. At some point in the meeting, a drawing is held and someone wins one-half of the pot. The other half goes into the building fund.

This suggestion was adopted for our future meetings. Thank you, Bill. We are always glad to have Bill and his good wife, Angie, at our meetings.

Also, it was decided at future meetings, as a point of interest, fun, and perhaps add a little to the coffers, someone will donate something that will be auctioned off.

As was stated in our last report, an election of officers will be held at our December meeting for the coming year. Let's try to have a good gathering at this important meeting of the year. President David asked Donnie Koerner if he would accept the position of head of the nominating committee.

Donnie accepted and was accepted and approved by the body. Donnie will head a committee to present us with a slate of officers. Nominations can also be made from the floor.

We were happy to have District Three Director Mr. Johnnie Krizan with us. We are always happy to have the folks from the Home Office visit with us. Mr. Krizan made formal presentations of 50-year pins to six of our members: Carolyn Austin Doris M. Fox Ms. Mary Martinek Harry Schroeder Dorothy J. Tamplen Ms. Virginia J. Tschoepe Congratulations, folks!

Mr. Krizan discussed the youth program.

Mr. Krizan presented a check for $500 to President David. In February of 1996, the then inactive Lodge 5, Tioga was reactivated and became known as Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga, with regular monthly meetings. This check was given as an incentive for going from inactive to active and going with monthly meetings instead of quarterly. Our thanks to the Home Office for this consideration.

President David thanked Dean Carender for coordinating the program for the day. Dean cooked the turkey, dressing and various other things, and decorated the tables with a Thanksgiving theme. Other side dishes were brought in complementing a wellrounded meal. Dean extends her thanks and appreciation for the many compliments she received. That made it all worthwhile.

Elise Koerner will be in charge of the December meeting. Exact date, place and time will be set at a later date.

We had 26 people present-23 members and three visitors.

Dear Members, A reminder: Assembly for the December monthly meeting, this next Sunday, the 14th, will be before or at 12 noon, at the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street where those present will be escorted to the meeting site, as indicated in the previous letter. Fun and Games November Monthly Meeting Report The meeting convened at 2 p.m. with a good quorum present which accepted all reports as given. Several motions were made and passed. Some dealt with the District Six Spring Meeting which will be held on March 22, 1998, at East Bernard.

Some of the other motions dealt with donations to the East Bernard EMS, East Bernard VFD, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville, and the Matagorda and Wharton Counties Child Protective Services.

Election of officers for 1998 were held with those who served in 1997 being reelected. For the record, they are: Joseph D. Nezval, President Glen Kaminsky, Vice President/ Fraternal Activities Coordinator Helen A. Kelner, Secretary/Treasurer The board of trustees stays the same with Joseph D. Nezval, Helen A. As to the fraternal hour buffet luncheon, everything was donated with enough for seconds.

30, Taiton Christmas social set for Sunday, December 14 Lodge

Lodge 30, Taiton will have their annual Christmas social on Sunday, December 14 at the Taiton Community Center. All members and their families are welcome to attend.

Louis and Dorothy Kokes Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Louis and Dorothy (Drgac) Kokes celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Friday, November 21 with a steak dinner at the Zentner Daughters Steak House.

Louis and Dorothy were married on November 21, 1947, by the late Joseph A. Barton in the Wall Brethren Church. They were engaged in farming in the Grape Creek and Veribest communities from 1947 to 1951. After making only two bales of cotton and 900 pounds of milo due to the drought in the 1950s, they sold out. Louis went to work for the Lone Star Gas Company and retired after 32 years of service. Dorothy went to work for the San Angelo Independent School District and retired after years of service.

They are members of the Wall Brethren Church and the Mutual Aid Society, where Louis has served as secretary/treasurer for 40 years. They are also members of the Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society, RVOS No. 25, the Lions Club, and SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo.

Louis is also a veteran of World War H. Their hobbies are arts and crafts.

They have won many first, second and third place ribbons at stock show exhibits.

At present, Louis and Dorothy live at 101 Tyler Terrace in San Angelo, Texas, where they are enjoying their retirement. They are very thankful to the Lord for the good health and the 50 happy years they shared together.

Our Lodge 66 annual meeting was held on November 16 at Linden Hall in Elm Mott with 35 members present.

The officers and committees presented very good reports.

New members- accepted were Robert H. Glaesmann, Jr., Bailey Rose Carlisle and Allison Shyan Hanzlicek.

We welcome you to Lodge 66 and hope you will attend our meetings and activities.

SinCe Sister Lucille Cervenka, Chair of the Entertainment Committee, had resigned, Sister Dorothy Gerlich volunteered to help until a chairperson is elected. Thanks, Dorothy.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mary Alice Langlotz reported that Lodge 66 was unable to get up a team for the volleyball tournament but next year would get a team entered. The next game night will be on January 12, 1998.

Members participating in the Progressive "42" Tournament at Lodge 48, Beyersville on November 1 were Gladys and Ben Pustejovsky and Emma and Otis Ceska.

Congratulations, Gladys, on winning fourth place. The games were lots of fun and the food was delicious.

Thanks for the wonderful hospitality.

The cheer and condolence committee report was given by Emma Ceska.

Get-well cards were sent to Diana Engelke and to Charlie Mueller. A sympathy card was sent to Charlie and Irene Mueller on the death of his son, Robert Charles Mueller. We extend our sympathy and condolences to all the families.

Youth Leader Diana Engelke reported 12 youth and six adults attended their meeting. Activities included taking Thanksgiving cookies to the Moody Nursing Home, bowling and making Christmas ornaments for the fund raiser at Linden Hall. Also, plans are to make Christmas bags and placecards for the lodge party, and plans for their youth club party. The November birthday cake was donated by Kevin Galler, and Candice McAdams provided the birthday cake for December.

Door prizes were won by Sandra Trickett and Brian Tierce.

President Engelke announced that a collection will be made for the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund, so please don't forget your 100 pennies for this very worthy cause. Also, 1998 officers will be installed.

Arts and Crafts Show Great Success The Holiday Arts and Crafts Show and Sale on November 22 was a great success. There were 50 booths with a wonderful display of beautiful pieces of crafts. Our youth club members sponsored a booth and are to be commended for all their work and efforts.

Linden Hall had delicious food available all day, and a great selection of all kinds of goodies in the bake sale. We thank each vendor for their participa-

tion and hope all their sales were good.

We sincerely hope you will be back with us at our next event. Many thanks for your donations of items for the door prizes awarded throughout the day.

Many thanks to all members and volunteers who made donations and who worked very hard in the planning, in setting up and getting the hall back in order, in handling the quilt raffle, door prizes, cleaning, decorating, baking, cooking and for seeing that everything ran smoothly. Our many thanks also to Geneva Hall Board of Directors for the use of their tables for this function. Again, a big "thank you" to everyone who helped in making this craft show and sale such a great success. We had lots and lots of folks to come by and sincerely appreciated their attendance.

66, Waco invites members to December 13 Christmas party Lodge

Lodge 66, Waco's Christmas party for its members will be Saturday, December 13 with doors opening at 3 p.m. A turkey and ham dinner with all the trimmings will, be served at 5:30 p.m. Members are asked to bring a salad or dessert.

We will have the initiation of officers for 1998. Door prizes will be also drawn. Members will have an oppor tunity to participate in the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive.

79, Corpus Christi Christmas party set for Sunday, December 14 Lodge

On Sunday, November 16, a delicious Thanksgiving, dinner was enjoyed by about 40 people. The meal was catered by Danny Malek and the turkey with all the trimmings was very good. The lodge paid for the meal.

Everyone who came donated canned goods which in turn will be donated to a charity. There was a big stock of all sorts of canned food collected. Plus, a total of $67 was collected for the 100 pennies scholarship fund drive.

Thanks to all for your generosity.

After the dinner, President Jerry Sijansky called the monthly meeting to order with all officers present. A moment of silence was observed in memory of deceased member Sister Agnes 13erckenhoff. A motion was made and approved to dispense with reading the minutes for this meeting only. Treasurer Milly Elzner gave the financial report. A thank-you letter from Salvation Army was read. This was the October donation.

President Jerry Sijansky reported on the District Seven meeting on November 2, which was held at Floresville. He said there was a good turn-out and everyone enjoyed the fun day, part of which included games and a kolache baking contest.

New members accepted as members were Joe L. Sugarek, R. Budinger, and Yolanda Hernandez. Welcome to all and do come to the meetings.

Acting FAC Jerry Elzner read a letter from State FAC Barbara Rosenkranz; All members are asked'to report all the fraternal acts and activi ties they have done. A reminder that scholarship application requests must be sent in to the Home Office by the end of December was also read. He said for the incentive award, we have fulfilled enough fraternal acts and up to the end of October, we have 16 new members. To reach the gold award, more new members are needed. He read the proclamation by Corpus Christi Mayor Neal given for Czech Heritage Week. It is up on the bulletin board.

Christmas Party December 14 The combined SPJST, Sokol, SVPS, Christmas party will be Sunday, December 14 and will start with a short gym program, then Sokol will present the year pins to be followed by a cov ered dish supper for which each family is to bring enough food for their family.

Then, the highlight, Santa Claus, is to arrive. All members and their families are invited to come.

The November donation of $50 goes to American Diabetes Association here in Corpus Christi.

Next Meeting December 21 Members were reminded that the next meeting will be Sunday, December 21 and it is election time.

Why not attend this meeting! Voice your opinion because this is the time to

do so at the annual meeting. The time of the meeting is 2 p.m. and there will be a'svacina after the meeting so please bring goodies to share.

84, Dallas elects officers at November meeting Lodge

Dear Members, Our President Yeager was absent due to surgery. We wish her a speedy recovery. First Vice President Ben Jarma chaired our meeting. As usual, he did a very good job.

Committee Reports Sister Vickie Kohn of the Sunshine Committee stated that get-well cards were sent to Jerry Talley, David Hagar, Justine Yeager, Anne Skrabanek, and Cotton and Linda Kartous. Sympathy cards were sent'to Martha Strouhal on the loss of her husband Frank; Helen Durbin and family on the loss of their brother Eddie; Anna Ziadle on the loss of her husband Eddie Ziadle; Fred Schaerdel on the loss of his brother John; Evelyn Schaerdel and family on the loss of her husband John; Ed Tyroch on the loss of his cousin Ruth Tyroch; and Anna Skrabanek. The membership extends sincere sympathy.

The hall rental report was presented

Brother Adolph Salac of the House Committee reported that he stayed with the workers who repaired the base of the building stopping the seeping water from entering into our conference room. He reported Sister Carlyn Ondrusek, Sister Bessie Petr and Sister Evelyn Salac were present to keep an eye on the great work these workers did.

In my last report, I failed to mention that all hands went up on the vote for Treasurer Carlyn Ondrusek as "our member of the year" from our lodge.

Her work is greatly appreciated as the books are always in order. She is a tireless worker in the kitchen during special events and she volunteers to help by being present when any work, decorating or cleaning is needed. We congratulate you, Carlyn.

Sister Cheryl Petr reported on band hiring.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported a great crowd gathered at Cici's where the youth and teens held their meeting.

She said a Christmas program is being planned. That is at our party on December 14. Doors open at 4 p.m. and at 4:30 p.m., all bar drinks will be

served half-price. From 5 to 6:30 p.m., dinner will be served and the program follows. The lodge will furnish the meat, cheese, etc., but if you come, please bring a side dish and dessert to go with the planned meal.

Sister Wanda Petr reported a good turnout at the Fraternal Meeting last week held at our lodge. On December 8, the Christmas party is at the Czech Club at 7 p.m. SPJST members are responsible for desserts.

The Heritage Day workers met last Thursday, and Brother Ben Jarma is still wondering what happened that he failed to attend and enjoy the feast that each ethnic group brought to share with other groups to introduce foods of their culture and heritage. If you are wondering about 1998—the Heritage Day at the fair will continue and the music hall will be the location. Thanks to the dedicated folks who work so hard to keep this special day something to look forward to.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth reports on member, lodge activities Dear Members and Friends, I am sure all of us enjoyed the turkey and all the fixings that go with the Thanksgiving dinner. It is so good to have such wonderful wives to fix a good dinner and then complain about us gaining weight. Christmas is getting close so more good food will be cooked, I am sure.

It was a big surprise on November 15 when I got out of bed to get the newspaper and find snow had covered the roads and lawns with about oneand-three-fourths inches. However, it did not last long; by 10 a.m., it melted.

We know that cold weather is on the way so we have to expect it.

We have one of our older members who is a bowler so here is a little news about her. Ella Praslicka is 93 years of age and still belongs to the Golden Oldies Bowlers Club. She has been bowling for about 50 years and has many trophies and ribbons to show for her being so good making high scores.

She has an average of 130, so you bowlers know what that means. Ella,

we are proud of you for winning so many prizes. She is a member of our Lodge 92 and soon will be outliving her policy so we are looking forwards to this.

We had a fine dance on November 23 with music by the Fabulous Six. We sure would like to see more of our members and friends attend these dances that we have with bands, from out-of-town. We want to always keep our Czech dances and the Czech heritage. It is always good to hear Czech music. I am sure some of us older dancers have slowed up but you can always come to enjoy good Czech songs. This is the way all lodges keep the building in good shape as all of us have bills each month. So come out to be with members and friends. Also, we have country/western dances so also try to make them, if possible.

Watch the Vestnik calendar section for activities at our lodge as well as all lodges. There are radio programs on Sunday morning from Ennis, Texas, that announces dances and then from Dallas and Hillsboro, a good program is in the afternoon.

Sister Mary Pulliam is now at home after several days at the rehab but seems to be better. She enjoys keeping up with news of all lodges.

Dick Durham was in the hospital for two days for minor surgery but is home. Martha will have to be his nurse for a while.

Now with the sad news which we all hate to hear. Member Don Powers passed away on November 22, 1997, and was buried on November 25 at Mount Olivet Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, son, and grandson.

Brother Frank Tesar passed away on November 23. The rosary was November 25 and the burial was November 26 and he was laid to rest at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Frank worked many years for our lodge in many ways but most of the time he collected money at the door at dances and other activities that were held at the lodge. Frank was born in Seymour, Texas, in 1913, and then moved to Fort Worth in 1942. He worked for General Dynamic during the war and then he retired in 1976.

He worked in the Catholic Church and in the Knights of Columbus. He was the financial secretary for KJT No. 54 for 49 years. He was a member of the Lodge 92 Ladies Circle and the Friendship Club. Pallbearers were nephews George Tesar, Daniel Tesar, Tony Pappas, A.C. Kubecka, and Edward Kurtz. Survivors are his son, Frankie Joe Tesar; daughter-in-law Joyce Tesar; son Johnny Tesar; daughter-in-law Bunny; daughter Bernadette Holford; son-in-law David Holford; daughter Mary Ann Krivanek; son-inlaw Kenneth Krivanek; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Frank's wife, Marie Tesar, passed away in 1995. May his soul rest in peace.

A long time friend,_ Rose Zalesak, died November 24 after a lengthy illness. The funeral was November 25 at 2 p.m. at Saint Patrick Catholic Church with burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Rose was a daughter of Anton and Rose Vystavil, who are both deceased. Rose was a cousin of Lydia Alholm.

These are members and friends who will be missed at the meetings

and other activities we have at our lodge. We extend sympathy to the families of these deceased.

On November 9, 1997, our meeting was called to order by President Bayer.

The roll of officers was called with Glen Pruski, first vice president, and Thomas Novak, second vice president, absent.

Secretary Lucille Novak read the minutes from the last meeting. The youth report was by Wendy Pruski.

Connie Purchis presented the FAC report.

Old business included a report on the district fall meeting and on the horseshoe pits that are being put in.

New business included the election of officers with all present officers reelected for another year.

The Christmas party is December 14 at the lodge hall. Dinner will be at 1 p.m. Meat will be furnished and all members coming are asked to bring a vegetable or salad plus a dessert. The regular meeting will be after the meal.

133, San Antonio enjoys Thanksgiving luncheon Lodge

Lodge 133 held a Thanksgiving luncheon on Sunday, November 16 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. Members enjoyed turkey, dressing and a delicious array of side dishes and desserts.

There were 28 members and six guests in attendance.

Congratulations to Joe and Annie Stryk who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in November.

Members presented them with a Luby's gift certificate in lieu of corsages. Other members celebrating November anniversaries include Bill and Gertrude Pavliska (54 years), Herman and Julie Kurtz (67 years), Jim and Shirley Burrows (17 years), and Cecil and Sophie Hull (51 years).

Sick members include tZudy Valchar and Megan Schauffele. We wish them both a speedy recovery.

Bill Pavliska, Don Netek and Frances Schimcek reported on the successful district meeting that was held in Floresville. Congratulations to Evelyn Matula and Lucille Dlugosh for winning first place in the dominoes tournament. The spring district meeting will be held in New Braunfels.

Our current slate of officers have been unanimously reelected to serve in 1998. They are: Jarolyn Popp, President Bill Pavelka, Vice President Margaret Schauffele, Secretary/Treasurer Michele Popp was appointed as flag bearer. Congratulations to our 1998 officers.

Christmas Luncheon December 21 Lodge 133 will host a Christmas luncheon prior to our meeting on Sunday, December 21. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Members are asked to bring a side dish and dessert.

Christmas bags will be provided for the children and a special visit from Santa is expected.

Lodge 182, Falls County welcomes visitors at November meeting Lodge 182, Falls County met on November 23 with nine members and five visitors present. We are always happy to have visitors.

District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz from the Home Office came and helped Youth Leader Judy Treat and the youth make 81 small baskets of candy and cookies. They delivered the baskets to the Golden Years Nursing Home in Marlin and gave them to each resident and wished them a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

The cookies and candy were donated by the members and guests and were welcomed.

The president called the regular meeting to order after their trip was over. The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved. New business was the lodge donation to the scholarship fund which was approved.

The old business was the further discussion of the Holiday Supper on December 6.

We want to thank Patsy Koslovsky and Barbara Rosenkranz for coming and joining in all of the meeting and we would like for them to return.

Bleiblerville-Nelsonville stew fund raiser set for December 14 The lodge's beef and chicken stew fund raiser will be Sunday, December 14, 1997, at the hall. Stew-to-go will be ready at 10:30 a.m. Serving at the hall will begin at 11:30 a.m. We will also have a cake stand. Members are asked to bring any kind of sweets to sell in the cake stand.

At 1:30 p.m., the general meeting will be held. Please try to attend. This is the same Sunday of the stew meal.

A most cordial invitation to all members, new members and visitors.

Corpus Christi Circle of Women reports on November meeting The Corpus Christi Circle of Women held their monthly meeting on November 16, 1997, with 26 members and one guest, Dorothy Klapuch, present.

The meeting was called to order by Becky Elzner-Jackson followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Several members were absent due to illness or other commitments. Among those absent were Frances Kosarek, Marion Peterek, Clara Valla, Velma Malchar, Rose Huff, Sophie Snapka, Ella Simcik and Albertina Oakes.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Molly Chudej (mother of Norma Baker) who died recently.

Donations to the Circle in her memory were made by Lil Hruska, Anna Marie Moss, and Becky Elzner-Jackson.

It was decided that we purchase a new coffee pot for our use at the meetings. Mary Elzner offered to take care of this item.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Becky Elzner-Jackson and Lillie Hayek, the only November birthday members present. Those not in attendance were Evelyn Lovelace, Frances McDonald, Lottie Ramey, and Jennifer Marek.

Elaine Burge of Houston, Texas, was accepted as a new member.

Minor changes in the by-laws were suggested and approved. It was also voted that all records be kept for future reference.

Members voted that we would again have our Christmas party catered by Danny Malek.

As is our custom, each Christmas we bring some much needed personal

items or small gifts to supply the Women's Shelter, a local facility for battered women.

Eight lucky ladies won some very nice gifts today.

A delicious meal was enjoyed by all; lunch was followed by a pleasant game of bingo with Jerry Elzner serving as caller.

November News Tidbits

Clara Valla was visiting relatives in Nebraska.

Albertina Oakes was on an overnight trip to Louisiana.

Donna and Jim Havranek's daughter picked them up in her plane to spend Thanksgiving and several days in Austin and the surrounding hill country.

Marion Peterek has just returned from a ski trip to Utah with her daughter. (No broken bones; understandably so, she did not even put on a ski!) She did not attend our November meeting due to a previous luncheon engagement.

Frances Kosarek was also enjoying lunch and a boat trip with business friends.

Della Elzner's recent five-day trip to Branson, Missouri, was very exciting.

She saw the very beautiful, colorful Christmas shows presented by Branson's top entertainers, namely Andy Williams, Bobby Vinton, Shoji Tabuchi, Tony Orlando, The Osmonds, Yakov Smirnoff, and others. She highly recommends these shows.

Fraternally, Della Elzner, Reporter P.S. The trip and a three-week bout with sinus problems explains the delay of this report. My apologies!

Ennis Sewing Circle

reports on November meeting Before you read this letter, it may be a wise idea to sit in an easy chair, as the letter will be rather lengthy.

The Circle met on November 13, 1997. There were 28 members present and visitors Vlasta Getchell, Margie Zhanel, Truman Whitfield, Charles Kosarek, Julius Podhrasky and Jerry Koubek.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of two of our sisters, Vojteska Janicek and Mildred Trojacek. We express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved families.

Assistant Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes. Treasurer Lillie Kosarek gave the financial report. It was approved as given.

There was a correction in the secretary's minutes. The correction was that Sister Sadie Kubin received only a getwell card, no money gift. The minutes were approved as corrected. Eleanor Pelzel of the Sunshine Committee sent a get-well card and money gift to sisters Mary Kopecek, Mildred Trojacek and Agnes Dolezal. Flowers were sent to the services for sister Vojteska Janicek and sister Mildred Trojacek.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the November birthday celebrants.

Sister Sylvia Laznovsky brought up the idea that the Circle take a trip sometimes in the near future. It will probably be next spring. Sylvia will look into this.

A quilt was quilted for sister Stevie Slovak. We welcomed a new member, Margie Zhanel. The door prize was furnished by sister Liddie Pavelka. Sister Libbie Elsik was the lucky winner.

Sister Sadie Kubin thanked everyone for the get-well cards she received.

Sister Rosie Bednar thanked everyone for the sympathy cards she received and for what everyone did for her sister Mildred Trojacek and family.

A thank-you note was received from sister Bertha Podhrasky and family, Ann Zurovetz and family, and George Janicek and family for the potted plant for their mother's funeral service and for the food furnished for the dinner.

Sister Eleanor Pelzel gave a $10 donation for the quilt quilted. From the white elephant sale, $8 was received.

Memorials were received for Vojteska Janicek from Otto Kurtz, Georgia Tupy, Frances Sparks, Libbie Wisniewski, Libbie Elsik, Sadie Kubin, Olga Ann Kucera, Anne Zvolanek, Mary Sebestik, Dorothy Prachyl, Bertha Malik, Liddie Pavelka, Joe and Adell Vlk, Sidney Ann Bridewell, and Alice Roberts.

Memorials for sister Mildred Trojacek were received from Sadie Kubin, Mary Kubacak, Dorothy Prachyl, Adell Cikanek, Ella Zmolek, Jerry and Vickie Kohn, Joe and Adell Vlk, Vlasta Laznovsky, Anne Zvolanek, Libbie Wisniewski, John and Evelyn Trojacek, Mary Sebestik, Frances Sparks, Libbie Elsik, Olga Ann Kucera, Sidney Ann Bridewell, Liddie Pavelka, Georgia Tupy, and Alice Roberts.

If anyone was omitted, it will be corrected in my next letter.

Sisters Mary Kopecek and Alene Skrivanek sent a hello to all the sisters.

Our next meeting will be our Christmas party on December 11.

Bring a gift for no less than S3 and put your name on the gift. Also, bring a covered dish. The party will start at 10 a.m. We will not have the drawing as we usually do, so do not bring a gift!

Sister Dorothy and Wesley Prachyl are proud grandparents of Andrew Joseph Cole, who weighed seven pounds, four ounces. He was born on September 13, 1997. Proud parents are Bill and Cathy Cole.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor celebrates Halloween The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 celebrated Halloween with a special costume and decorated wheelchair party.

Members of the staff and Terry Pundsack (volunteer) helped dress the residents for the party.

Pauline Kovar, Activities Director, introduced each contestant to Mr. Woody Richards, Administrator, who in turn elaborated on the participants and their costumes.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the officers and the entire membership of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed sister,

VLASTA MARIA NOWOTNY. A funeral mass was celebrated Friday, September 5, 1997, at the St. Michael Catholic Church in Needville with Rev. James Ramsey. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery.

She was born November 26, 1906, in Austria to parents Osvald and Rosie Valka. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Altar Society, Western Deanery, Lions Club, SPJST, American Legion and Sewing Circle.

Her husband, Herbert William Nowotny, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Joyce N. Crum of Gainesville, Florida, and one sister, Rosie Slaughter of Houston.

In Memory of

Milam Docekal A lifetime resident of LaGrange, Texas, Milam Docekal was born on July 27, 1914, the youngest of three brothers and three sisters born to the late Frank and Marie (Novak) Docekal.

He was united in marriage with Lillian Ryza on October 18, 1938, and was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in LaGrange.

Milam was co-owner of Docekal's Cleaners with his brother Lad for many years. He managed and operated the dry cleaning and pressing part of the family business, having been taught by his father who had professional training in Prague before coming to the United States in 1909. He operated the Cleaners independently in the 1970s prior to his retirement.

In addition to his dry cleaning profession, he developed skills in mechanics, carpentry, horticulture, and farming. He was an expert carpenter, having built several houses in LaGrange, and he assisted his children with homes in Giddings, Texas, and Palestine, Texas. After retiring from the family business, he worked part-time at other local dry cleaning establishments, and farmed a small acreage in Rabbs Prairie. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid deer hunter for 35 years as well as a freshwater and saltwater fisherman. Milam was also a member of the LaGrange Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian Docekal of LaGrange; daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Stuart Naumann, also of LaGrange; daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Floyd

Koslan of Arlington, Texas; son and daughter-in-law Bill and Barbara Docekal of McKinney, Texas; sister-inlaw, Callie Docekal of LaGrange; six grandchildren, Lindsay Naumann of LaGrange, Steven Koslan of Hurst, Texas, Suzanne Phillips of Arlington, Texas, Shelley Koslan-Joiner of Burleson, Texas, Gail Docekal of Irving, Texas, and Debbie Desselle of Forest Hills, New York.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Vlasta Wentrcek, Edith Struve, and Rose Marburger, and two brothers, Otto and Lad. --SPJST--

Burial was in the LaGrange City Cemetery.

Mr. Docekal, 83, co-owner of Docekal Cleaners, was born in LaGrange on July 27, 1914, the son of the late Frank and Marie (Novak) Docekal. He was united in marriage with Lillian Elizabeth Ryza October 18, 1938, in LaGrange. ?after Docekal Cleaners was discontinued, he did part dry cleaning and tailoring for other businesses for a number of years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge 106 and a former member of the

LaGrange Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian Docekal of LaGrange; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Floyd Koslan of Arlington and Sharon and Stuart Naumann of LaGrange; one son and daughter-in-law, William L. and Barbara Docekal of McKinney; six grandchildren, Lindsey Naumann, Steven Koslan, Suzanne Phillips, Shelley Joiner, Debbie Desselle, and Gail Docekal; and five great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Christopher Dickenson, Rachael Koslan, Stephanie and Celina Alvarez.

Preceding him in death besides his parents were four brothers and three sisters.

Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the LaGrange Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Gladys Zingelmann.

In our Lodge 88, he was a member of the Men's Club. He served his country in World War II. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Gideon's International, and Engine Rebuilders Association of Houston.

He was also a founder of Superior Engine Rebuilding Company.

Interment was in Waldeck Cemetery in Waldeck, Texas, on November 26, 1997.

Johnnie Janak, Sr. Johnnie Joseph Janak, Sr., 66, of Victoria, died Sunday, October 26.

1997.

He was born May 16, 1931, in Sweet Home, to the late Albert and Helen Matusek Janak. He was a retired glass cutter from Six Flags Glass Company. He was a past Grand Knight and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 1329, KJT

and SPJST, and was active at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral serving as an usher, communion minister and was a member of the church board.

Survivors are his wife of 46 years, Evelyn Slovacek Janak; daughters, Diane Moehrig and Sharon Moehrig, both of Victoria; sons, John J. Janak, Jr. of Victoria and Kenneth Janak of Fort Worth; sisters, Julia Shirley of Falfurrias and Annie Henneke of Houston; brothers, Frank Janak, Richard Janak, August Janak and Marcus Janak, all of Hallettsville; seven grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild.

He was preceded in death by brothers Jerome Janak, Joe Janak, Dan Janak, Bohdan Janak, and Eugene Janak; and one grandson.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, October 28 at Colonial Funeral Home chapel on Red River.

Services were at 10 a.m.

Wednesday, October 29 at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral with the Revs.

Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery.

ALVIN W. CHALOUPKA, who died on October 26, 1997, in Bellville at the age of 79 years.

Services were held from the Industry Brethren Church with Rev. Milton Maljr 'Officiating. Interment was in the Industry Brethren Church Cemetery in Industry. He was born on October 8, 1917, in the Welcome community to parents Vincent and Emma (Sheafer) Chaloupka. He was raised in Welcome.

Alvin served in the U.S. Army in World War II. On November 11, 1965, he married Adela Schovajsa Fick in Houston. He worked until retirement at the Linseisen Feed Store in Bellville as a clerk. He was a member of the Industry Brethren Church, VFW of Bellville, Shelby Sons of Hermann, and SPJST Lodge 201.

RUDOLPH LADDIS KOSTELNIK, who passed away on Monday, September 22 in Texas City.

Mr. Kostelnik was born April 17, 1916, in Needville and had been a resident of Texas City since 1988, previously of Old Ocean.

Mr. Kostelnik was a member of the First Baptist Church in Old Ocean, Texas, and had been an insulter and painter with Amoco Oil in Sweeny, Texas for 40 years before his retirement in 1981. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Fonda Kostelnik of Texas City; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Herb Trevathon of Santa Fe, Debra and Joe DeLaGarza of Spring; sisters Maggie Kovar of Damon and Annie Ferrell of West Columbus; and grandchildren, Jerry and Michele Callaway, Rhianoon DeLaGarza and Roxanne DeLaGarza.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 24, 1997, in the chalet of Hayes Funeral Home in Hitchock with Mr. Robert Taylor officiating. Interment followed at the Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery.

ROY BERNHARDT. Mr. Bernhardt, 79, of Thrall, Texas, died Thursday, November 27, 1997, at his residence.

He was a farmer and lifetime resident of the Thrall area. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Thrall and on the Church Council.

He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 48.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Hazel Kaiser, Bernice House, and Delores Bernhardt.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Bernhardt; daughters, Nancy Scruggs and husband Glenn, Sr. of Taylor, Linda Sladek and husband Billy of Hutto, and Patricia Williams and husband Alan of Taylor; son, Roy L. Bernhardt and wife Irene of Taylor; granddaughters Lisa Bern, Monica Lefner, and Melissa Stone; greatgranddaughters Ashley Stone and Rebecca Lefner; sister, Marjorie Springer and husband Walter of Thrall; brother, Adolph Bernhardt, Jr. and wife Irene of Thrall; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Brandon Sladek, Bradley Sladek, Glenn Scruggs, Phillip Scruggs, J.T. Stone and James Lefner.

Honorary pallbearers were Walter Springer and Lee Roy Nygard.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 1997, at St. John Lutheran Church in Thrall with the Rev. Robert Sauer officiating.

Interment followed in Taylor City Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Condra Funeral Home in Taylor.

Vestnik Project for December 1997 Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Language Film

Kolya Movie Summary (Rated: PG-13) 1997 Academy Award/Golden Globe Winner for Best Foreign Language Film (Internet Sources: Movie Link, The Internet Movie Database Ltd., and The Austin Chronicle) Once a famous concert cellist in the August Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Frantisek Louka now plays funerals and paints tombstones at the city crematorium in Prague.

His friend, a gravedigger, convinces Louka, a debt-ridden confirmed bachelor, to marry his distant niece who needs Czech papers. No ties. No obligations. Just a signature in exchange for enough money to buy a small car and pay the rent.

These youth attended LIT Retreat and were in charge of helping out with various responsibilities at camp, such as flag ceremonies, devotionals, party planning, games, dancing, and singing.

The camp opened Friday afternoon with DYC Marcy Dorotik giving introductions, rules and cabin assignments. Once everyone was settled in, activities began with the youth going swimming. After supper, the campers enjoyed battling their opponents off while they played war games and then campers teamed up to play various games. Before going to bed, we ended our day enjoying watermelon for refreshments.

Saturday morning activities began with -Iners singing some of their tradti: .1i and favorite camp songs.

Th. re: of the morning campers enjoyed playing games. That afternoon C.: campers enjoyed making placucs with their names on them for their camp craft. Free time was given for the rest of the afternoon due to rain.

Saturday night, the LITs hosted a

Fifties Sock Hop Party for the SPJST campers. Various campers dressed up in fifties attire for the festivities.

Emcees for the evening were Elizabeth Wagner and John Richardson. The sock hop began with several special performances. Starting the entertainment off, all the way from Las Vegas, performing "My Teddy Bear" was Elvis (performed by Curtis Dorotik). Following the opening act was Jan and Dean performing'"Surf City" (performed by Jason Kaspar and Adam Siptak). Next on the entertainment list was Nicole Dum, Rachel Dluhos, and Crystal Roye performing and dancing to "Leader of the Pack."

Our younger campers even got in the show. Bethany Dluhos, Camille Staff, Mandy Staff, Kirby Bubela, Megan Marcaurele, and Amber Scholeman choreographed their own dance to "Grease Lightning." Younger campers Danielle Zalman, Kenna Bubela, and Elizabeth Vahalik also choreographed their own dance along with chaperone Rosann Zalman Finishing up the evening's entertainment was Chuck Barry, with a showstopping performance to "Johnny Be Good" (performed by Chase Zalman)

and closing the show was another leg shaking performance by Elvis singing "Hound Dog" (performed by Curtis Dorotik). All the LITs and teenage campers did a fabulous job putting on some great entertainment.

Next on the party's agenda was the costume contest. Best costume for the girls was Elizabeth Vahalik and there was tie for the boys between brothers Steven and Brandon Drapela. They were so cute. They looked like James Dean. Following the costume contest was the sock hop hula-hoop contest.

Winner of the contest was Bethany Dluhos. Special notice should be given to Rachel Dluhos and Nicole Dum, who, if I hadn't messed them up on purpose, probably would have hula-hooped all night. To get our feet and hips moving we also had a twist contest. Best fifties twist dance went to Megan Marcaurele and Kenna Bubela. Finally to finish off our fifties sock hop, the rain finally let up and campers were able to go swimming.

Afterwards, fifties-style refreshments were served consisting of ice cream floats. Before going to bed, we had a very special devotional, singing "Kum-Ba-Ya" and concluded with

some special words and thank-yous.

Sunday morning activities included swimming and canoeing, lunch was then served and everyone departed for home. All in all, District Six Camp was a huge success.

District Six wants to thank our State Youth Director Joni Lange for being with us at camp and a big thankyou to our special guest from the SPJST Supreme Lodge, President Howard Leshikar, for stopping by and visiting with us. We really appreciated you coming and we hope you had a great time.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my chaperones who attended from District Six. Chaperones were Rosann Zalman, Wanda Dorotik, Tommy Drapela, Lisa Bubela, Greg Bubela, Frank Staff, and Maurice Dluhos of Lodge 30, Taiton; and Shirley Kalmus of Lodge 4, Hallettsville. A special thanks to Becky Dluhos and Monica Staff of Lodge 30, Taiton who attended this year's camp as our camp nurses. I know it is not an easy job attending to all the campers over the weekend and we really appreciate all your time to come and help us out.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club visits Southern Manor Nursing Home Lodge 4 Youth Club entertained the residents of Southern Manor Nursing Home in Hallettsville with bingo on Saturday, September 27 at 2 p.m.

Everyone enjoyed helping the residents play bingo.

9, Snook Youth Club plans December activities Lodge

Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club held its Christmas program on December 7, 1997, at 6 p.m. at the SPJST Hall. We met at 2 p.m. to decorate and practice for the program.

On December 13, 1997, we will be taking toys to MASH and going to the movies. We will be going Christmas caroling on December 14.

As you can see, our youth club has a busy December planned. We hope that everyone had a fun and safe Thanksgiving.

17, New Tabor Youth Club reports on November meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, Lodge 17 Youth Club's November meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m. by President Mabrey Petty. There were 14 youth members and nine adults attending the meeting. Brandi Crnkovic led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, and the treasurer gave his report.

We discussed having a Christmas lock-in and gift exchange, and fund raiser plans for this month will be selling more SPJST 100th Anniversary cookbooks.

Our youth leader Susan Skrabanek discussed with us the annual 100 pen1-1; es scholarship drive and the upcoming t-shirt design contest. Mrs. Skrabanek also introduced our new member, Ashley Schoeneman.

The youth club members enjoyed having pizza for a snack. The meeting was adjourned at 4 p.m.

The next youth club meeting will be held with our Christmas lock-in.

30, Taiton Youth Club performs awardwinning routines for veterans Lodge

Lodge 30, Taiton youth performed for the American Legion Post 251 Annual Veterans Day Celebration on November 11, 1997. The youth who presented their first place state award winning performance, a patriotic medley dance production routine, were Jason Kaspar, Rachel Dluhos, Curtis Dorotik, Crystal Roye, Chase Zalman, Shara Dluhos, Chad Dorotik, Megan Marcaurele, Kyle Kaspar, and Camille Staff. The youth who presented their second place state-winning routine who did a clogging routine to "CottonEyed Joe" were Kirby Bubela, Trey Staff, Mandy Staff, Steven Drapela, Brandon Drapela, Bethany Dluhos, Paul Shoelman, Jarret Dluhos, and Amber Schoeleman. Also, Trey Staff

sang his song, "1, 2 I Love You". The youth enjoyed the meal and the music

November Meeting On Sunday, the youth club members held their monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Curtis Dorotik. The prayer and motto was led

by Chad Dorotik. We welcome one visitor. She was Kirstin Stubbs. The roll was called and the minutes of the last club meeting were read by Shara Dluhos. The treasurer's report was given.

Old Business Certificates from the 97th Annual Texas Fraternal Congress were handed out to the members who performed.

They did a wonderful job performing.

Also, congratulations went out to the members who were on the scrapbook committee for winning first place on the scrapbook and the poster committee for winning third place on the poster at the Texas Fraternal Congress.

The camp t-shirt contest has started and the theme is "SPJST Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow."

New Business The Christmas social was discussed.

It will be held on December 14, 1997.

The meal will be provided by the adults, and youth club members are asked to bring side dishes and a dessert. All members are invited to come and join in the fellowship and fun. The youth will perform for the Catholic Daughter Christmas social on December 15.

We celebrated several birthdays— Steven Drapela, Chad Dorotik, and Jarret Dluhos. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday." The youth read fall and

Thanksgiving poems, and they drew and colored a picture of a cornucopia.

The youth also donated to the 100 pennies drive that is going on.

Our next meeting is our Christmas social on Sunday, December 14 at the Taiton Community Center. Lunch will be served at 12:15 p.m. and the meeting follows. The contest is to make a Christmas tree ornament. Our charity will be to bring a toy to be donated for the Child Protective Services.

The meeting was adjourned and everyone enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies served by Brent Gold, Travis Krpec and Crystal Roye.

Home Fires (Continued from page 4.) shoulders scrunched against each other. The driver was about 20 years old. He listened to our Czech and then smiled when he heard that we were from America. Radek proudly told us that he had taken English for four years. He then introduced us to his uncle and his grandfather, Frantisek Broz.

Soon we were enjoying a view from Frantisek's back yard. The view was of Mnisi and the entire valley.

There was a welcome breeze that made us relax. Frantisek wore a straw hat that was almost identical to the hat that Grandpa Brosh wore when he sat outside in the hot Texas sun. This grandfather's face also seemed familiar—yes, he had the big nose that runs in the Texas Brosh family. Was he kin? Was this man the link?

His wife, Marie, offered us cool spring water, Radegast Beer, fancy chocolates that had been saved in the refrigerator and fresh juicy plums from their plum tree. Radek translated question after question for his grandfather to answer. The grandfather had said that he had heard that many had left Mnisi in the 1870s, but he didn't know if he had any relatives that had immigrated to America. He knew only of his Czech family. He said that just in his 70-year life, the Communists had controlled his land, the Czechs had split with their neighbors, the Slovakians, and now the Czech Republic was becoming democratic.

1997 100 PENNIES SCHOLARSHIP DRIVE

After about an hour we had to leave. Before we left, he showed us his beautiful garden. Then he went into a small shed and returned with a gallon of honey. He raised bees and collected the honey, just as Grandpa Brosh had done in Texas.

A few weeks after our visit, Radek sent us a family tree. Yes, we are related. The great-grandfathers had been brothers. One had left for a better life in America, but one had stayed to keep the home fires burning, waiting for the return of the family.

A year after this first meeting, my husband and his sister went to stay with the Broz family in Mnisi. They spent three weeks meeting new relatives. My husband has a special love for this family. He knows that his roots are in both the rich Czech soil and the Texas soil.

He is proud of his new Czech relatives.

They are a mixture of professionals, blue collar workers and farmers, the same as his Texas relatives.

November 8, 1997

Grandpa Broz in the Czech Republic died today. Radek E-mailed us to tell the sad news. Dennis is grieving this loss. There is only one remaining Broz (the first old man) in Mnisi now. Grandpa had four daughters, and 11 grandchildren that we plan to see again soon.
