SPJST posts qualifying member certificates written through October With a little more than one month to go in 1997, a number of SPJST lodges have written sufficient member certificates to qualify for one of the 1997 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards.

The Minutes of the October 14 and 15, 1997, Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas The meeting was called to order by Chairman of the Board Vanek at 8:30 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. Director Vavra moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to accept the minutes as printed. The motion carried unanimously:

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz's report was reviewed. It was affirmed that on October 15, 1997, Dr. Klinger will make a presentation on "Successful Fathering." President Leshikar expressed tie need for the Society to help with donations and also the sponsorship of one workshop in Temple. This workshop could be of interest to the younger generation.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR - State Youth Director Lange's report was reviewed. There was a discussion as to how effectively the monies are being spent on camp when there were 280 campers this past year. There is no charge to the campers if the youth attend at least six youth club meetings per year; otherwise, there is a charge to attend the camp.

EMPLOYEES - Dorothy Tomasek and Ann Paruzinski were recognized by the Supreme Lodge. Mrs. Tomasek has been working for the SPJST for 45 years.

She originally started work in Fayetteville and is currently the Assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer. Ms. Paruzinski is the mortgage loan clerk and has worked for the SPJST for 20 years. They were presented with a corsage and a monetary gift.

Recess was taken from 11:55 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Chairman Vanek welcomed Editor Vanicek to. the meeting.

SALARIES - Chairman Vanek inquired as to whether or not all of the directors had received the recommendations pertaining to the proposed salary increases.

OLD BUSINESS CALENDAR - President Leshikar reported that the bid for the SPJST calendars had been awarded to Jodi Vasek for $17,858.00. The calendars are to be mailed the last week of November or the first week in December. The final draft has been approved so the calendars are on schedule. After a lengthy discussion, President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, to open bids for the 1999 calendar during the April Supreme Lodge meeting. The motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar showed the Supreme Lodge the picture that was taken with Governor George Bush at the 100th Anniversary Proclamation signing. This picture will be on display at home office.

Director Bayer questioned President Leshikar as to what the results were of the youth survey that the Youth Department was to conduct at different functions. It was requested that each director receive a list as to the number of youth in each of their lodges. There is a need to know why the youth did not participate in the camp program and what the youth desire.

President Leshikar moved that the Supreme Lodge pay for mileage for one year per youth lodge to bring the youth to the Youth Officers' Workshop. Motion failed for lack of a second. It was decided to recommend the mileage be paid from the District Youth Funds.

CZECH COSTUME - President Leshikar reported that the Czech costume is the property of the SPJST. The costume has been displayed at the Youth Leaders' Workshop, the 100th Anniversary Celebration, and at the Cultural Activities Center in Temple. It is being kept in the Youth Department and may be used by anyone who is presenting the Czech heritage to the public.

Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, to change the youth rule book concerning the "Beseda Dance" as the district youth counselors requested. The motion carried unanimously.

STATEWIDE CHARITY - It was pointed out that since SPJST is tax exempt, it

may become necessary for the Society to have a statewide charity. President Leshikar explained the need for the charity to last for two years and one that local lodges can identify with. This charity will have to be willing to promote the SPJST as being one of their corporate sponsors. It was decided for the President's Department to visit with different charities and report to the Supreme Lodge members at the next meeting as to what would be needed by the charity, such as raising money, support groups, etc. The Supreme Lodge will need to be furnished with the cost and also the mechanics as to how this partnership will work between the home office and also the local lodges.

It was stressed that there is a need to create a program that will get the members that are 20 to 45 years old active in the local lodges. It was suggested that the members might be interested in programs concerning financial planning from the standpoint of insurance, health and fitness programs, and diabetes. The officers are to report back at the next Supreme Lodge meeting with suggestions for a program.

AUTOMOBILE LOANS - President Leshikar reported on the research that was conducted about automobile loans. He indicated that no other fraternal societies make automobile loans. This seems to be due to the regulations of only being able to lend 75 percent on any security. Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded

by Director Vavra, for the SPJST not to make automobile loans. The motion carried unanimously.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - The State Fraternal Activities Coordinator's job is to train the officers of a local lodge and not try to find officers for dormant lodges. This is a new program and the responsibilities and duties are still being refined.

Recess was taken from 3:30 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.

Chairman Vanek welcomed State Youth Director Lange to the meeting.

State Youth Director Lange stated that she was there on behalf of the youth who are requesting $2,000.00 funding for the State Lock-In. It was pointed out that in November 1996, $500.00 was approved for the State Lock-In and that additional expenses could be taken from the Youth Fund. The Youth Fund can be used for camp or whatever other youth activities they wish to.

A committee was established to study the youth allocations and the whole youth program. The committee consists of Director Klinkovsky, Director Bayer and all of the officers. The committee is to study and make recommendations for changes to the youth program at the January Supreme Lodge meeting. This study should include an equitable way to distribute the youth funds.

President Leshikar reported that State Youth Director Lange and the district youth counselors recommend changes to the youth rule book. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, for President Leshikar to review the changes and make recommendations later in the meeting since some of the changes were unclear. The motion carried unanimously.

VESTNIK - Editor Vanicek presented his report to the Supreme Lodge which consisted of his travel, publicity for the SPJST, assistance to local lodges, and several ways that might help build name recognition for SPJST. There was a discussion concerning the suggestions that Editor Vanicek made.

Recess was taken from 10:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

NFCA - Those who attended the NFCA informed the Supreme Lodge members that it was stressed that all fraternals must make sure they keep in compliance with all the laws. They must also be aware of the laws that are being enacted so the fraternals can remain competitive. It was mentioned that the next main competition will be from banks. President Leshikar reported that Joe Goodwin from IOF, in North Carolina, presented an entertaining presentation about insurance.

Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded by Director Broz, to hire Joe Goodwin for the incentive banquet at a cost of $500.00 plus expenses (air fare, motel, and meals). The motion carried unanimously.

Director Hanus reported on the Fraternalist of the Year Presentation. Legal Advisor Kacir reported on the Investment Section presented by Dean Witter Reynolds. The small fraternal section will be on the NFCA program next year and will review some of the problems the small fraternals are facing. President Leshikar thanked the Board for allowing him and his wife to attend the NFCA.

It was decided by common consent for Editor Vanicek to publish a survey in the Vestnik to find out what the adult members and the youth members like in the local lodge meetings, what they would like to see more of, and what changes they would like to see made.

LAM - From July 16, 1997, to October 3, 1997, there were a total of 447 visitors to the museum. The miniature museum was taken to Bartlett Rest Home and the Cultural Activities Center in Temple.

SALES - Vice President Mikeska reported that there have been 918 applications submitted through September 30, 1997, for $29,083,000.00 of insurance written.

There has been $21,961,000.00 of insurance issued with $358,812.55 of earned premiums. Vice President Mikeska stated that there is a need for the Society to put more insurance on the books. He stated that if we really want to see an increase in sales to much higher levels, it will require a commitment throughout the organization.

ILLUSTRATION SOFTWARE - Vice President Mikeska reported that the illustration software is being distributed to the sales representatives. It is being requested that they bring their computer to the home office to have the software installed if at all possible. The software includes the ability to run proposals on Universal Life, ModTerm, Mod20, Whole Life, 20 Pay Life and Annuities.

STATE FIELD MANAGER - Vice President Mikeska presented State Field Manager Gene McBride's Report. The FIC training is going well. Approximately 80 of the 100 participants have already been tested on the first book.

Vice President Mikeska informed the Supreme Lodge that State Field Manager McBride is currently serving on the Fraternal Field Managers Association Board.

If the Supreme Lodge desires to be represented on the FFMA Board, SFM McBride will be required to attend approximately two meetings out of state during the year. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to authorize State Field Manager McBride to attend two meetings of the FFMA Board held in a state other than Texas. The motion carried unanimously.

CENTENNIAL MEMBERSHIP DRIVE - Vice President Mikeska reported that as of September 30, 1997, SPJST gained 249 new members and there are 66 SPJST members in the Centennial Club who have recommended two or more new members.

100TH ANNIVERSARY - Vice President Mikeska informed the Supreme Lodge members that several anniversary items were sold at the Centennial Celebration held at the Expo Center. The items remaining are being used for promotion/advertising items and distributed as gifts and door prizes at local lodges.

A list of the items still available for sale have been published in the Vestnik.

NEW PRODUCTS -Vice President Mikeska reported that work is being continued on revising the premiums on our Whole Life product. He affirmed that several home office employees are being sent to a seminar on the "Roth IRA." This IRA has favorable tax advantages and might be an excellent addition to our product portfolio.

HOME OFFICE - In response to the request from the Supreme Lodge at the last meeting, Vice President Mikeska reported on the cost for coming up with a more secure arrangement for the underwriter. Due to the cost, it was requested for Vice President Mikeska to present three bids for the rearrangement of the Insurance Department work area utilizing a work station convent and also the cost for utilizing work stations for the other departments.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that she had not received the 1997 lodge officer listings from the following lodges: 188, 82, 167, 149, 181, 8, 32, 41, and 151. She pointed out that the request for the 1998 lodge officer listings and update of lodge information will be mailed in November.

Copies of the 990/990-T's for 1996 have not been received from Lodges 188, 20, 24, 25, 167, 114, 149, 8, 151, and 184. Legal Advisor Kacir has written these lodges requesting copies of their 990/990T. COOKBOOKS - Due to the many requests from the local lodges, SecretaryTreasurer Anglin reported there have been 1,500 more cookbooks ordered and they will be available for sale around November 15, 1997. These books may cost about $6.75 each since this was such a small order. From the previous orders, there will be approximately $800 donated to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

AUDITORS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that the independent auditors charged an extra $1,000.00 to audit the securities at the bank and the custody account. Director Broz moved, seconded by Director Bayer, for the directors to do the audit of securities in July 1998. The motion carried unanimously.

$43,774,922.72. Financial Secretary Mikulas was requested to provide the Supreme Lodge with the amount of certificates in the less than $10,000 group, in the $10,000 to $20,000 group and over $30,000 group.

There was a discussion about the Modified Whole Life certificates. There are many of these certificates that only stay in force for one year. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Vavra, that the Modified Whole Life certificates not count toward the 1998 Lodge Incentive Program because these certificates have a very low premium and due to the cost of putting these certificates on the books, they are not cost effective enough to include them in the Incentive Program. The motion carried unanimously.

Recess was taken from 9:25 a.m. to 9:40 a.m.

LITIGATION/BANKRUPTCIES/FORECLOSURES - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on mortgages and certificates in process of bankruptcy and the mortgages in process of foreclosure and possible litigation. In response to a question asked, Legal Advisor Kacir informed the Supreme Lodge that some taxing authorities will enter into a workout with an individual. Some of the workout plans proposed by the taxing authority will not bring all of the taxes and penalties current in the time span allowed by the taxing authority.

Legal Advisor Kacir expressed his appreciation to the Board for allowing him to attend the NFCA and the Mortgage Lending Institute.

HOME EQUITY LOANS - It was pointed out that in order for the SPJST to he able to participate in the Home Equity Loan Program, the Society must be authorized as a lender. There are twenty-five separate requirements that must be followed in conjunction with Home Equity Loans.

LEGISLATURE - Legal Advisor Kacir reported that at the quarterly meeting of the Texas Domiciled Fraternals held in Temple, Texas, a request will be presented for funds for a person to act as liaison for the legislator and the insurance department. It was also recommended that each fraternal send a representative to visit with the Texas Department of Insurance Commissioner. There is a concern that if variable annuities are sold, it will be necessary for the agent to be a licensed agent and licensed by the SEC. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, to affirm the motions made in September 1996 minutes of the Supreme Lodge which was: to pay up to $1,000.00 per year during a director's term of office for actual expense, if the director elected to the NFCA is from Texas; to authorize up to $5,000.00 for a legislative liaison or provide for an administrative liaison if needed provided that at least three of the other Texas Domicile Fraternals contribute an equal amount and if more is needed a request can be submitted to the Board. The motion carried unanimously.

DISTRICT I - Director Vavra reported that Lodge 141 - Sealy has four new officers and their next meeting will be on October 23, 1997. He further reported that President Leshikar, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz, and Director Vavra attended a meeting at Lodge 141. State Field Manager McBride and State Field Representative Gatewood are planning to attend a meeting at Lodge 141 in December. A meeting with the officers of Lodge 169, Brenham has been scheduled.

The Supreme Lodge was informed that Lodge 186 - Caldwell has agreed to be the location for the Local Lodge Officers' Workshop and Incentive Banquet on February 28, 1998. They have agreed to hold these functions for a charge of $800 for the hall rental. President Leshikar is in charge of the workshop.

Director Vavra invited everyone to attend the District I meeting Sunday, October 19, 1997, at Lodge 17, New Tabor. Director Vavra reported that he had attended functions at Lodge 38, Smithville, Lodge 201, Nelsonville-Bleiblerville, Lodge 17, New Tabor, and Lodge 13, Dime Box. There was a discussion about having one person answer all the incoming telephone lines. It was decided for the officers to do a study of this and a study of the possibility of having voice mail and report their findings at the next Supreme Lodge meeting.

Dr. Klinger and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz were welcomed to the meeting to do a presentation about a workshop on "Successful Fathering". It was voiced that the first step of the "Successful Fathering" program will be to have a one-day statewide seminar conducted by Dr. Klinger for invited participants. Further discussion of this subject was taken up under new business.

SOCIETY AUTOMOBILES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on his study of the SPJST automobiles. There are eleven automobiles owned by the SPJST with a total of 252,749 miles traveled in 1996. Two cars have approximately 140,000 miles. Based on mileage and expenses in 1996, the cost to operate an SPJST vehicle amounted to 26.37 cents per mile which is a savings over the $.31 a mile for mileage reimbursement set by the Convention.

ANNUITIES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that for the first six months of 1997, a total of $2,401,504.71 annuity deposits were made. Of these deposits, $105,276.16 was deposited into Annuity I and $2,296,229.55 was deposited into Annuity II. There are 376 certificates in Annuity I that exceed the limit of $30,000.00. There are 2,546 annuity certificates with deposits totaling

DISTRICT II- Director Klinkovsky reported on the progress of Lodge 174, Rockdale and that State Field Representative Gatewood attended one meeting, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz attended two meetings, and stated also that he had attended two meetings at Lodge 174, Rockdale. The lodge is very cooperative about being one of the targeted lodges and are now having monthly meetings. Director Klinkovsky further reported that he attended a meeting at Lodge 155, Austin. This lodge meets at different places and still meets quarterly.

Director Klinkovsky reported he was attending the FIC classes. He had also attended State Royalty, State YAD, and meetings at Lodges 87, Temple, 177,

6/VESTN1K—Wednesday, November 26 1997 Academy, 18, Elgin, 20, Granger, 174, Rockdale, 47, Seaton, 29, Taylor, and 15, Buckholts. He thanked the Supreme Lodge for allowing him and his wife to attend the NFCA. He commented that he enjoyed the speakers.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan reported that Lodge 5, Pilot Point/Tioga is now trying to have an activity with each meeting. He added that the lodge always meets monthly, but periodically changes the date of the meeting to coincide with its monthly social or fraternal activity. Director Krizan further praised the lodge for its significant increase in members and insurance since its reactivation.

Director Krizan reported on conversations he had with various officers of Lodge 54, West. He mentioned that they are still interested in a youth club, will soon take on a new sales representative, and maintain a positive attitude about the future of their Lodge. Director Krizan stated Lodge 54 has a lot of good things going for it. He further stated that Lodge 54 has a bright future and that they were only targeted to try to give them the opportunity to step up to the next level of active lodges in the state by beginning to hold monthly meetings, to increase community involvement, and to start a youth club at their lodge.

Director Krizan complimented the Supreme Lodge Officers and Editor for having at least one representative at most of the special functions held by lodges in his district since the last meeting.

In regard to the underwriter, Director Krizan expressed his opinion that this is a sensitive position in our Society because of the vital and confidential nature of the work involved and further stated it does not present well to the public for this individual to be without a private work area and to he answering the telephone on a regular basis.

Director Krizan mention that Lodge 6, Cottonwood should be complete with its remodeling project by the end of the year and he expressed his thanks to the Supreme Lodge for all of the support provided during Lodge 6's 100th Anniversary Celebration.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz expressed his thanks to the Supreme Lodge for allowing him to attend the NFCA. He thought the sessions were very informative.

He expressed his thanks to Secretary-Treasurer Anglin and her husband for attending the District IV meeting. He reported that he had been to Wichita Falls, Big Springs, Lubbock, and Seymour working with the lodges to find new sales representatives. He commented on the good job that Jerry Kucera was doing in District IV. DISTRICT V - Director Hanus reported on his visit with four members from Lodge 88, Houston at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. He attended District V meeting in Crosby and wished that more members had been able to attend the meeting.

He announced that Lodge 191, Lufkin has a new sales representative and the membership is working towards getting the lodge hall air conditioned. He expressed his appreciation for being allowed to attend the NFCA; he felt the sessions were very educational.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer reported that Lodge 164, Rio Hondo has a new sales representative and he and President Leshikar are scheduled to attend Lodge 164's next meeting. He stated that he has attended meetings at Lodge 202, Jourdanton, Lodge 161, Jourdanton, and Lodge 93, Hobson. He invited everyone to attend the District VII meeting in Floresville.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek reported that Lodge 138, Ganado had disbanded and their members were transferred to Lodge 153, La Salle. He pointed out that Lodge 138 donated $411.00 to the SPJST scholarship fund. He reported that Lodge 8, Weimar and Lodge 41, Port Lavaca have new sales representatives. He complimented Jim Weist on the job he is doing in District VI; subsequently, the district has met their insurance quota and premiums are up. Director Vanek inquired as to the status of the 25-year pins. President Leshikar responded that there has been some difficulty in administrating the program. By common consent, it was decided for the committee composed of the officers and two directors to review this problem and make a recommendation to the Supreme Lodge in January. Director Vavra recommended for President Leshikar to find out how expensive designing a new 75-year membership pin would be and report his findings to the Supreme Lodge at the January meeting.

Chairman Vanek commented that the employees of SPJST should portray a positive attitude towards the members, directors, and officers. The Supreme Lodge agreed to stress good, prompt, and friendly service to all directors, officers, members, and visitors and to stress the importance of all employees having and reflecting a positive attitude.

LAM - President Leshikar reported that the museum curator is currently making a copy of any books or manuscripts that the library only has one copy of.

CENTER FOR SUCCESSFUL FATHERING - There was a discussion about the possibility of having Dr. Klinger's program of "Successful Fathering" as a pilot project for a cost of approximately $2,000.00. It was noted that this could be a family enrichment series that focuses on what parents can give to children such as love and a feeling of belonging. This type of program could be called "Successful Parenting". By common consent, it was decided for President Leshikar to write a letter to Dr. Klingler requesting that he put an article in the Vestnik to promote his workshop and to explain what the workshops are about. It was also decided for a survey to be put in the Vestnik to see if the membership is interested in this type of workshop.

SCHOLARSHIP - There vvas a lengthy discussion about raising the scholarship amount. The SPJST will continue to donate $25,000.00 between the SPJST general scholarship fund and the SPJST leadership grant fund. Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to raise the amount of each scholarship given from $500.00 to $750.00. The motion carried unanimously.

It was reported that Cindy Kovar, from Lodge 174, has received an additional $5,000.00 from the Paul Newman/Good Housekeeping Contest. She is donating these funds to the endowed scholarship fund in remembrance of Otto Hanus.

SALES CONTEST - Vice President Mikeska presented the Christmas Cash contest. This contest would run from September 1, 1997, to November 30, 1997.

The following are the different levels of the contest.

1. Level 1 - Sell 25 insurance applications and win a weekend trip to Austin, Texas, for two with a Saturday night stay at the Doubletree Hotel; plus $50 cash to defray travel expenses and $100 cash for fun money or sell 15 insurance applications and win $150.00 Christmas cash.

2. Level 2 - The top three sales representatives will receive cash prizes. First Place will receive $750.00 cash, second place will receive $550.00 cash, and third place will receive $400.00 cash.

3. Level 3 - The sales representative's name will be entered into a drawing for a Las Vegas trip for every application written.

The rules are that the sales representative can win only two prizes and claim the largest of the two or the prizes can be substituted for a computer co-payment.

This contest excludes annuities and modified juvenile whole life applications.

Director Bayer moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to ratify the Christmas Cash contest. The motion carried unanimously.

Vice President Mikeska presented the Lincoln Run contest for the new sales representatives. For every application the sales representative writes, within the first thirty days, the sales representative's spouse (or the sales representative if not married) will receive $5.00. It the sales representative writes four more applications within the first thirty days they will receive an SPJST jacket. SecretaryTreasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to ratify the Lincoln Run contest. Motion carried unanimously.

MOD TER1VI - Vice President Mikeska reported that they are contacting members about purchasing ModTerm. Those members who do not have a sales representative are being assigned to a sales representative in their lodge. Sales representatives are being requested to sign a "Servicing our SPJST Members" form.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to approve the approach of assigning sales representatives to members and using the "Servicing Our SPJST Members" form. The motion carried unanimously.

ACTUARY - Vice President Mikeska reported that the Texas Department of Insurance requires an illustration actuary. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded

by Director Krizan, to approve resolution or any other documents that need to be executed to comply with the State Insurance Regulations. Motion carried unanimously.

AUTOMOBILES - There was a discussion on one of the Society's automobiles which has had to have several repairs. Director Broz recommended a report from Vice President Mikeska at the next Supreme Lodge meeting concerning the automobiles used by the state field representatives.

SALES INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Vice President Mikeska recommended the continuation of the monthly and annual recognition for state and district top producers at the same cost as 1997; the consistency club as in 1997; and the million dollar producers recognition award as in 1997. Vice President moved seconded

by Director Hanus, to approve the recognition, consistency, and million dollar producer and to approve $30,000.00 for the 1998 sales incentive program. The motion carried unanimously.

NEW BUSINESS EMPLOYEES - The new employees, Gena Goodwin from the President's Department and Virginia Zapata from the Vice President's Department, were introduced to the Supreme Lodge members.

YOUTH - An explanation of the recommendations of the district youth counselors' changes to the youth rule book was presented by President Leshikar to the Supreme Lodge. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to accept the recommendations. The motion carried unanimously.

DELINQUENCIES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that 21 loans are past due 90 or more days and made recommendations concerning each loan. There are six loans on a work out plan and 12 loans on bankruptcy/foreclosure.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to accept the recommendations. The motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer recommended a loss reserve of $16,000.00 be set for the past due mortgage loans. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to accept the loss reserve. The motion carried unanimously.

Wednesday, November 26, 1997---VESTNHQ7 REO 194' Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that the property in Crosby, Texas had sold and requested to ratify the sale. The property was listed on the books and sold for $23,832.75. Director Broz moved, seconded by Director Krizan, to ratify the sale of the property. The motion carried unanimously.

REAL ESTATE LOAN APPLICATION FEES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that the application fees for real estate loans were lowered on April 1, 1997. These fees have continued to be monitored. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to lower the real estate loan application as recommended in Secretary-Treasurer Anglin's report. The motion carried unanimously.

UNIVERSAL LIFE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to leave the Universal Life interest rate at 7 percent through January 31, 1998. The motion carried unanimously.

ANNUITIES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Vavra, for Annuity I interest rate to remain at 5 1/4 percent, Annuity II interest rate remain at 6 1/4 percent and the Immediate Annuity interest rate remain at 6 1/4 percent. These interest rates would be in effect until January 31, 1998. The motion carried unanimously.

INVESTMENTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, to ratify the investments from July 1, 1997, through September 30, 1997. The motion carried unanimously.

INVESTMENT POLICY - The current investment policy was discussed.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to authorize the purchase of bonds with one million dollars provided the bond has a rating of A/A or better. The motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Krizan, to change the current investment policy to increase the amount allowed to the money fund/money market accounts to two million dollars. The motion carried unanimously.

EMPLOYEES - There was a lengthy discussion concerning the amount of vacation and sick leave the part-time employees receive. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Legal advisor Kacir, that effective January 1, 1998, all parttime employees would be entitled to one week of sick leave and one week of vacation per year. The motion carried unanimously.

INDEPENDENT AUDITORS - Bids for the independent auditorS were opened.

There were four bids received. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Broz, to accept Henry Jezek's hid for three years. The hid was for $11,000.00 each year. Voting in favor were; President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer. Voting against were: Director Krizan and Director Vavra. The motion passed.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS - Financial Secretary Mikulas compared the actual expenses and income from 1997 with that of 1996. He also went over the 1997 budget and answered questions from the Supreme Lodge members.

"A" & "B" CERTIFICATES - It was set forth that according to Article 33-14, the Supreme Lodge is to determine the discounts of class "A" and "B" certificates for 1998. Previous discounts allowed a 25 percent reduction of premiums of certificates in classes "A" and "B" whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and who have attained the age of 70 years and an additional 25 percent reduction when they attain the age 75 years. Director Broz moved, seconded by Director Vanek, to continue the same discounts through 1998. The motion carried unanimously.

CLOSING OF THE BOOKS FOR 1997 - Financial Secretary Mikulas announced that the books of our Society will close December 30, 1997, at 12:01 p.m. for 1997.

LODGE MERGERS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that Lodge 138, Ganado voted to disband and allow each of its members to transfer to the lodge of their choice. One-hundred and sixteen certificates were transferred to Lodge 153, La Salle.

EMPLOYEES - Financial Secretary Mikulas presented the officers recommendations for the employees salaries. A lengthy discussion followed. After asking if a secret ballot would be in order and being informed this deals with personnel, Director Krizan requested the vote be done by secret ballot. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, to accept the officers recommendation. Five voted in favor and seven voted against. The motion failed.

DISTRICT I - Director Vavra reported that Lodge 17, New Tabor had decided against having a 100th celebration. He invited everyone to attend the District I meeting at Lodge 17. He thanked the Society for the 100th Anniversary items and Director Bayer for his gift. He thanked Jerry and Betty Mikulas for having the Supreme Lodge to their house one evening.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky thanked Director Bayer for his gift and Financial Secretary Mikulas for their hospitality. He further stated he had enjoyed the meeting.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan asked if the Supreme Lodge intended to take action on the officers recommendations for Christmas gifts to employees. He further stated that he was in favor of the officers recommendation and asked if they would consider adding a gift certificate for all living past Supreme Lodge members. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to give each full-time employee a $300.00 gift certificate for either Sam's or WalMart; each part-time employee a $150.00 gift certificate for either Sam's or WalMart; $100.00 gift certificate to each officer, director, and the editor; and a $50.00 gift certificate to each living past Supreme Lodge member. The motion carried unanimously.

Director Krizan invited everyone to the District III meeting at Lodge 6 Cottonwood. He requested that the officers look into the cost of having an answering machine to take messages or having voice mail installed on the phone system to be operational only when the office is closed. He also suggested that the Society look into the possibility of having signs made up saying, "SPJST IS FINANCING THIS HOME". The signs could be put in the yard of willing borrowers.

Director Krizan encouraged the Supreme Lodge to look into new insurance products, such as the 30-year Fixed Term and Educational IRAs. He also informed the Supreme Lodge that he had representatives of the United States Postal Service review with Financial Secretary Mikulas our mailing policy and encouraged the Supreme Lodge to look into ways to take advantage of pre-sort mailing and other services offered by the postal service to lower mailing costs. The officers could mail all of their quarterly reports together using priority mail rates and save money.

Director Krizan requested that it would he a good idea to acknowledge by mail all donations to the LAM and possibly give some idea to the donor on how the items donated will be displayed. Director Krizan thanked the Mikulas Family for hosting a barbecue supper at their farm on Monday night for the Supreme Lodge members and for inviting retired directors Pokladnik and Kohutek.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz invited everyone to attend the Czech Fest in Rowena on October 25, 1997. Director Broz moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska to reconsider the Czech Fest Allocation. The motion carried unanimously. Director Broz moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to authorize $750.00 for each district to have a Czech Fest during 1997 and/or 1998. The motion carried unanimously. He thanked Financial Secretary Mikulas and Director Bayer for their thoughtfulness.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus reported Czech Day at Lodge 172, Pasadena will be the third Sunday in October and the Czech Day at Lodge 88, Houston on the fourth Sunday of October. He thanked the Supreme Lodge members for allowing him to attend the NFCA meeting. The meeting gave him a better understanding of other fraternals and how the NFCA worked.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer thanked Financial Secretary Mikulas for his hospitality. He reported his area code has been changed to 830.

DISTRICT VI - Chairman Vanek thanked Financial Secretary Mikulas and Director Bayer for their thoughtfulness. He requested all the officers' reports to be mailed one week before the Supreme Lodge meeting and all to be mailed together.

Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Broz, to make all the meetings in 1998, three-day meetings. Voting in favor were: Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Vavra, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Chairman Vanek, and Director Bayer.

Voting against were President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, and Legal Advisor Kacir. The motion passed.

The Supreme Lodge meeting dates for 1998 are January 13, 14, and 15; April 7, 8, and 9; July 7, 8, and 9; and October 6, 7, and 8.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood expresses appreciation to meeting volunteers Dear Readers and Members, As FAC from Cottonwood, I want to thank all those members that came out to cook the noon meal for the District Three meeting which was held at our lodge. We had lots of compliments on the meal and how our lodge members come out and help.

Christmas Party December 7 As the year is coming to an end, we will still hold one more important event. Our Christmas party will be Sunday, December 7. We will hold the lodge meetings and elections of officers at 2 p.m. A social and supper will follow. Santa will be present after a short Christmas program by the youth club.

We will again need help to prepare the meal. We will need to start at 9 a.m. We will also decorate the lodge on Friday, November 28 at 6:30 p.m.

A cold cuts supper will be served. We need everyone's help to decorate.

Those wishing to exchange gifts need to bring one that will be suitable for both a man or a woman priced at $7.50 or more.

20, Granger to honor 50-year members at Christmas Party Lodge

Lodge 20, Granger's Christmas party will be Sunday, December 7 at 3 p.m. at the lodge hall.

We are inviting all members and their families to come have a good time and snare the fellowship with one

another through their membership in SPJST. This will also be our annual meeting. Our Lodge 20 meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at our lodge hall. Refreshments are served following the meeting. All members are invited to attend our monthly meetings.

Memorial Dinner Plans were made for the memorial dinner on December 7 at 5:30 p.m. We would like to have a count of people attending. The Sixth Annual Tarok Tournament at SPJST Lodge 20, Granger is Saturday, December 6, 1997.

Veselanka Holiday Concert and Dance December 6 Make plans, too, to be at Flag Hall on Saturday, December 6, from 7 to 11 p.m., for the return engagement of the Veselanka Orchestra. The group, which comes from the village of Vesela in Moravia will be, playing traditional and seasonal Czech favorites. Tickets are $7 each for adults. Young people, 18 and under, will be admitted free.

Lodge 30, Taiton will have their annual Christmas social on Sunday, December 14 at the Taiton Community Center. All members and their families are welcome to attend.

The adult and youth clubs are collecting toys for the Texas Department of Protective Services in Wharton County.

Our Halloween Party was a great success as you already know if you read the letters of our youth club lately.

The laughter, excitement and cheers of the youth was a treasure to restore in any loving heart.

Please be advised that today after a turkey/dressing dinner, our members voted to hold our Christmas meal meeting and party on December 14. The meal will be served at 12:30 p.m. The meeting is immediately after the meal and the party is the rest of the afternoon.

Fun and Games We will have five door prizes for adult members. Every child will receive a gift. Also, everyone that wishes can participate in an elephant gift exchange. We all really enjoyed this game last year and wanted to have it again this year. You need to bring a wrapped gift with no name attached.

Place these in a separate place or box as designated. Rules for the game will be explained before starting.

The three-time stealing game is really fun, fun. The recipient sometimes likes what he or she picked and does not wish to give it up. It's hilarious how members try to hide what they have I even seen some sit on their gift so no one can get it It is all in fun, and if laughter is medicine, then we should all go home healthy, happy and feeling good.

My children all love this game and we play it every year for our family Christmas party. I feel so fortunate and blessed this year. All of my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be at my and Wade's home this year for Christmas. Some are driving and flying from great distances. This will be my greatest gift of all having my children all home for Christmas one more time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The laughter of a little child or to watch one take his or her first step, all of the hugging and kissing, the joy of seeing each other one more time, the singing of beautiful Christmas and gospel-songs-all of it . . . what else could any grandparent, parent or greatgrandparent ask for? I thank God every day for all of my beautiful children.

God bless all of you this holiday season. May all of you be as thankful and happy as I am. At my age, 'every moment is a treasure.

Lodge 47, Seaton elects 1998 officers, plans Christmas party Dear Brothers and Sisters, The annual meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton was held on Sunday, November 2, 1997, at 1 p.m. President Edwin Pechal opened the meeting and asked the flag bearers to present the colors.

Jessica Kirby and Rachel Baca led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our dear deceased Brother Walter Haisler who had passed away during the past month. He and his wife we're very active in the old hall and the present one, also. May we honor his memory forever and to the surviving family, we express deepest sympathy.

No visitors were present. So the invitation is out for you to come visit our lodge meetings. The welcome mat is there!

The following were mentioned on the sick list: Brother Clarence Sula (now deceased), Ruth Kohutek, Dorothy Pechal, and Ace Chlapek had surgery recently. I also failed to mention Brother Ben Bartek who is a resident at Southland Villa Nursing Center.

To any members who are ailing—may good health return to you very soon and stay that way because the holidays are coming up quickly.

The roll call revealed that trustee Calvin Skrabanek was the only officer absent. Secretary Sister Dolores Skrabanek read the minutes of the October meeting and these were approved as read.

New members welcomed to Lodge 47 were all transferees: Brandon Pechal from Lodge 24; Johnnie Lorraine Mod from Lodge 87; and Ann Balusek from Lodge 15. A warm welcome to each named and we are so glad you all joined us at our lodge.

Come to meetings, dances, etc.

We had received correspondence in regards to the hosting of the taroks, 42, and straight domino tournaments. We voted to put in the hid for all of these to the Supreme Lodge. We were also informed that that workshop and incentive banquet will be in Caldwell at Lodge 186 on February 28, 1998. The volleyball tournament was held last Saturday.

The board minutes were read by Edwin Vasicek, secretary. The officers' and chairpersons' reports followed. The names of the people who volunteered to donate the 15- to 18pound turkeys were taken and these turkeys are to be brought to the lodge meeting on December 7 at 2 p.m. The people in charge will thaw them out all at the same time to be ready for the pit on Saturday, December 13. It would be great if you could come and help that Saturday morning. Dressing will also be prepared and turkeys will be sliced, etc.

We voted to donate to the 100 Pennies Drive for the scholarships for the high school graduates. This is a very good cause and should be supported by all members—whatever you can afford.

Youth Leader Donna Baca gave her report. She stated 15 members, no visitors and two adults were present. The District Two lock-in was scheduled for Saturday, November 15 and the youth

could bring tapes or CDs. The youth will have their Christmas party on Friday, December 12 at 6:30 p.m.

Generic (boy or girl) gifts ranging from $5 to $7 are to be brought by those attending. The program is on Sunday, December 14 beginning at 3 p.m. with the memorial candle lighting ceremony for all lodge members who were called to their great reward in the year of 1997. The youth program follows. If you have little ones who would like to perform, please call Donna Baca at (254) 985-2658 and she will be glad to include them in the program. You know I had heard that Santa Claus is going to make his annual visit to the lodge. Have your list ready for him and don't change your mind later. Ha Ha! The supper will include turkey, dressing and gravy, cranberry sauce, and coffee and tea. We are asking members to bring salads, vegetables, or desserts. Bring these to complete the menu.

Wedding anniversaries were celebrated

by Edwin and Nelda Marek, Henry and Helen Janacek, Otis and Nancy Meier, and Walter and Ella Pomykal, who celebrated a golden anniversary at Star Hall on Saturday, November 1. Hope you all celebrated your "special day" whenever it was. The Pomykals' anniversary was really November 4, election day, so we had leftovers that day, too. Congratulations to all!

Door prizes were two trays won by Woodrow Marek and Ann Balusek and a turkey won by Lowvica Lucko.

Holiday Preparations The decorating of the hall for the holiday season will be Thursday, December 11 at 7 p.m. and the making of fruit packages, also. The youth club Christmas party will be Friday, December 12. On Saturday, December 13, the turkeys will be prepared and decorating will be completed. The tables will also be set and we will do whatever else needs to be done. Then on Sunday, December 14, the annual Christmas party begins at 3 p.m. with the memorial service and the youth program. The supper follows. Make plans to be there at any or all of these times.

The next meeting is Sunday, December 7 at 2 p.m. Chairpersons will be elected, and the turkeys will be brought for the lodge supper on the following Sunday.

49, Rowena hosts successful Czech Fest at lodge hall

Lodge 84, Dallas accepting reservations for New Year's Eve

The quarterly meeting of Lodge 49 was held on November 5 at the SPJST Hall in Rowena with eight members, two guests, and District Four Director Stanley Broz in attendance.

The pledge was led by President Elizabeth Walther, then a moment of silence was observed for our departed members.

Everyone in attendance talked about the nice time they had at the Czech Fest that SPJST Lodge 49 hosted on October 25. It was a big success.

New Year's Eve Dance is just around the corner. This year, we will have a battle dance. Music will be by the Vanek Czech Band and the Kaluza Polka Band. Dance time will be 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Tickets are now available. Advance tickets for adults are $10 and for teens are $3. If you wait and get your tickets at the door the charge will be $12 for adults and $4 for teens.

88, Houston Czech Folk Dance Class being received with enthusiasm Lodge

Dear Members, Great news to report from Lodge 88, Houston, Texas! On Saturday, November 15, I attended a dance class of Czech Folk Dances, a new group forming at Lodge 88. Anyone who wants to participate may do so.

This group is under the leadership of Donna and Guenther Merkle. They also teach Czech and German traditional dances of various regions in the old country or origin. Even if you get confused which is left or right (I did), everyone makes you feel like it is no big deal.

The group at Saturday's practice was so warm and really extremely friendly. I had a ball and I am also learning more about the Czech culture.

Believe it or not, you can learn Czech songs that are sung during these various dances.

Come out and join this group.

Donna and Guenther would love to have you. It is great exercise and good for the heart. But more importantly, you make new friends and you really enjoy it. Being a member of SPJST, being with your fellow brothers and sisters, having fun—combine all of these and you have a really truly fraternal fellowship.

This is something that the Supreme Lodge needs to look into. We have a dance class of youth. Why not have a dance group of older members? This is not just limited to older adults—it is open to all age groups. Believe me, it is a start in the right direction because many of us do not play golf, volleyball, checkers, etc. These groups will make goodwill appearances at different

88, Houston Birthday Sisters report on November meeting Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President Kathy Trefell. We had 25 members present.

The minutes of the October meeting were read by Secretary Dona Clooney.

After one correction, the minutes were approved.

The treasurer's report was given by Treasurer Ellen Miculka.

Our sunshine chairman Mary Kosut gave her report. She sent birthday cards to Alice Bily and Corrine Kessler. She sent get-well cards to Karl Lindemann and Ann Hoffman.

Don't forget the first Wednesday in December is our Christmas luncheon.

You are entitled to bring a spouse or one guest. We have ordered for 125.

We are inviting the lodge officers and their spouses, with invitations to go out later. Cakes for the first Wednesday are to be brought by Ellen Miculka, Margie Anders, Bessie Lero, Willie Mae Ermis, Julie Kinnoman, Alice Motal, Corrine Kessler, Dona Clooney, Lowrina Lindemann, Helen Hegwood, Lillie Spies, and Edna Wehring.

Workers in the kitchen that day will be officers of the Birthday Club: Kathy Trefell, Flo Orsag, Dona Clooney, and Ellen Miculka.

The second Wednesday of December, we will have sandwiches and salads. Workers in the kitchen will be Margaret Spahr and Bessie Lero and cakes will be furnished by Almeida Bravenec, Bessie Dewer, Adella Kite, Mary Kosut and Margie Anders.

One of the members, Mary Krippner, was featured in the area newspaper, The Leader, in connection with the 70th anniversary and reunion of the Sam Houston High School Black Battalion, the first military precision girls drill squad in the nation. It was named for a former principal, F.M. Black. Mary was a member from 1948 to 1950.

Many other drill squads were formed after the Sam Houston Drill Squad was organized in 1927. We all have seen the Sam Houston Drill Squad and other fine squads in Houston in the past.

Congratulations, Mary.

Helen Hegwood reported on our Imax outing. We plan to go on January 21, and Ellen Miculka is in charge of getting the bus. This should really be a fine outing. We will go by bus to the Imax with a tour of downtown Houston and then lunch at Kountry Kitchen Buffet. Cost of the Imax is $3.50 each for senior citizens which will be paid by the Club. (Lunch will also be paid for.) So all you ladies be sure to come.

President Kathy Trefell has suggested that we go to the new Bush Library at College Station, probably sometime in April, with lunch on the road. That sounds like great fun.

President Kathy Trefell read an essay on Thanksgiving. The essay read:

"Once again, time has brought us one of the most beautiful customs that has ever prevailed among any people.

Soon it will be Thanksgiving Day. Truly, we should be thankful for each other and for the fellowship we enjoy here at Lodge 88. It is with grateful, happy hearts that we approach this period of Thanksgiving. I want to wish each of you and yoUr family a very happy Thanksgiving."

92, Fort Worth striving to achieve "gold" recognition Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, It is always sad to write about deaths; but it is said that we start dying after we are horn. That is why all of us should enjoy life and do good while we are on earth.

Brother Raymond J. Hubenak passed away on November 9, 1997.

Raymond had diabetes for several years, and a while hack, he had to have his left leg amputated. Soon after the last operation, he developed pneumonia. Raymond always was a pleasant person and a loving brother to his sister and many nieces and nephews.

Raymond is survived by his sister, Martha Durham; his brother-in-law, Dick Durham; four aunts, Clara Cohen, Inez Krivanek, Alice Lindsey, Dona Hubenak; and many friends.

Our lodge meeting on November 9 was well-attended and it was also the election of officers for 1998. We had a guest, Brother Jerry Kucera, State Field Representative of District Three. Jerry gave a nice report about insurance. He stated that Lodge 92 had 19 new members this year, and to be able to receive $1,000 we need to have 25. So I am sure we can meet that goal if all of us try to help our sales representatives.

Our members thank all of our sales representatives for doing a fine job in securing new members.

Gordon, Cheryl, and Holly Hubenak were in charge of the meal at this meeting and they really put on a great meal.

Lodge Fraternalist of the Year Now for the member that will he our lodge fraternalist for 1997—Brother Kenneth Krivanek. Brother Krivanek has done many things for the fraternal acts. We are proud to have him as the fraternalist for our lodge and wish him lots of luck in the state fraternalist of the year.

On December 3, the Lone Star Texas Music Association will have an activity at our lodge to get toys for children in the hospital and homebound. The time is 5 p.m. until ?.

There will be music played on tapes and some acts. The admission will be one unwrapped, new toy (please no stuffed toys). There will be people asking for donations and there will be food. They ask if some could bring pastries. Our lodge will donate the use of the hall for this occasion. But all drinks will not be free. The bar will be open to sell cold drinks and beer.

Loretta Stone and David Lesikar Exchange Wedding Vows Loretta Lynn Stone and David Bruce Lesikar were united in marriage on October 26, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Historic Round Grove Church.

Minister Rhett Payne officiated and a reception followed at the church.

The Matron of Honor was Fawn Dosher and the Best Man was Les Freeman. Jason Lesikar, brother of the groom, was the usher and Leslie Lesikar, sister of the groom, presided over the guest book.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Huston W. Williamson of Gulf Shores, Alabama. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lynwood W. Lesikar of Fort Worth, and the grandson of Anna Lesikar, and the late William Lesikar of Fort Worth.

Christmas Party December 7

There will be a Christmas party on December 7 with the Sulak band from Ennis playing and there will be cold cuts and snacks for members, but guests will be asked to pay $6. This will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday evening.

Kids Christmas Party December 14 Then on December 14 is the annual Christmas party for children and Santa will be present to give out gifts (hut please remember, only one gift per child). The lodge will give out bags of fruit and candy. There will be punch and cookies that will start at 5 p.m. and, as usual, the children will put on a play and will sing Christmas songs.

An iron worker's wife went to a fortune teller one day. The fortune teller looked into her crystal ball, then looked at the iron worker's wife and said "I'm sorry, but 1 see a very violent and quick death for your husband."

The wife looked at her and said, "Would you look a little farther into the future and see if I am acquitted?"

Christmas party on December 3 Lodge 139, Danbury met at E.J. Restaurant on November 12. Plans were made for the lodge Christmas party which will he held on December 3 at 5 p.m. at E.J.'s Restaurant. We ask all members to attend.

Two of our student members were recognized. Sheldon Baldwin won second place at the showmanship competition in his class at the Brazoria County Fair this year. The fair was held in October. The Danbury High School volleyball team, of which Liba I4ostak is a key member, has won the district championship.

The deer hunters have had successful hunts so far this year. Vincent Hechler bagged a six-point deer, and getting eight-pointers were Troy and David Baldwin, Tommie Lostak, and Sonny Parker.

All you Lodge 139 members, mark your calendars for our December 3 meeting and Christmas party.

177, Academy elects 1998 officers Lodge

All officers answered roll call at the regular monthly meeting of Lodge 177, Academy held November 12, 1997.

The meetings are always held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. and we encourage attendance by all members of Lodge 177.

After the meeting was called to order by President Hutka we stood for the pledge to the flag. We recognized veterans J.C. Johnson, Alex Garcia, Clifford Cawthon, and Jesse Castillo who were in attendance.

Sunshine Chair Libby Bartek reported get-well cards were sent to Juanita Reyna, Bea Cawthon, Theresa Baca and Rose Lee Weadock. A thank-you card was received from Bea Cawthon for the plant sent to her in the hospital.

The minutes were approved as presented, and all chair reports received.

The FAC recognized birthday girls Bernice Hutka and Janet Lyon with anniversary mugs and pens.

New members welcomed to the lodge were Shawn Coburn, Jerry Cano, and Shleby Parker.

The members voted to donate $50 toward the Christmas social for the youth club. They will be attending a hockey game. Three teams will compete in the volleyball tournament in Bruceville-Eddy. We wish them luck.

182, Falls County plans December 6 Holiday supper Lodge

Lodge 182, Falls County met on October 26 with the call to order by the president. We met in a different place — in Chilton, Texas, on Main Street next to Treat's Repair Shop. This will be our new meeting place. The next meeting will be November 23.

The minutes of last meeting were read and approved. All officers were present. We proceeded with old and new business. As a members' project, we decided to make some bags and small baskets for the nursing home as holiday gifts at the next meeting with candy and cookies.

With an earlier time to begin at 2 p.m., refreshments will be sandwiches.

Holiday Supper December 6 We are planning our holiday supper to be on December 6 at Jo Ann's Place in Chilton for members and friends with turkey and fixins furnished. Members are asked to bring vegetables and desserts.

180, Burleson members to enjoy pizza, decorate lodge hall at December 2 meeting Lodge

Lodge 180, Burleson held its meeting on November 4 at 6:30 p.m. at which time the officers were elected and plans for our New Year's Eve dance were completed.

After the meeting, we all enjoyed a turkey and dressing dinner with all the fixings, pumpkin and pecan pies and whatever. All was very good.

For our December 2 meeting, we will install the officers and we will have a pizza dinner and all get busy and decorate the hall for Christmas, so be ready to work.

Our get-well wishes go out to all that are on the sick list, especially John Hilcher who may be having back surgery in the future.

Door prizes were won by Ben Jack Welsh and Carol Hilcher, each getting a turkey, and Ernest Dueser and Joe Hurtik, Sr., each getting a pen.

A letter was read about Jerry Mikus about his 50th wedding anniversary and about his nine grandchildren.

Business reports were given by the respective parties for the month of October and Cecil Phillips gave the trustee report.

Angeline Stiborek, membership chairperson, announced one candidate for membership, Barry Wayne Fryar, and he was approved by our members.

196, Houston West posts holiday party and dance dates Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Come out and celebrate the New Year at our new Lodge 196, HoustonWest hall, located at 17810 Huffmeister Road in Cypress, Texas.

by Leroy Rybak and his Orchestra from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The dance features the best in country and western variety, polka and waltz.

Worth Friendship Club reports on November meeting Fort

The meeting of the Friendship Club was called to order on Wednesday, November 5, 1997, by President Jo Prochaska. Forty-three members were welcomed plus four guests, Melba Brown, Ted Bugaj, Frances Matthews and Margie Turner. The president noted that Gertrude Dawson, Joe and Carrie Milan and Betty Jo Richardson were back after being absent for several meetings. It was nice to have you back. We missed you. Sympathy was expressed to Lillian Smith on the death of her son-in-law, George Orand.

The pledge to the flag was said.

Merle Kovar, secretary, read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Lydia Alholm, treasurer, presented the treasurer's report. Both were approved as read.

Lydia distributed the membership roster along with the hostess list. It was noted that December hostesses will be Elma Anderson, Ima Lou LaPlant, Linda Lewis, and Billye Starr.

It was discussed that if a designated hostess is unable to attend the meeting she should attempt to secure a replacement.

The singing of "Happy Birthday" went out to Elma Anderson, Merle Kovar, and Joe Milan. Hope all of you have many more.

Linda (Kret) Horner, Sunshine Chairman, reported get-well cards were mailed to Frank Tesar, Nettie Naugle, Florine Gurney, Harold Balvin, and Roy Alholm. A 50th wedding anniversary card was sent to Jo and Frank Prochaska.

The Christmas party and luncheon were discussed. It was decided the Club would purchase the ham and Master Chef Nettie Naugle volunteered to prepare it. Another chef, Linda Lewis, volunteered to bring a turkey.

All other members were asked to bring a side dish to round out the meal. All members who wish to participate in the gift exchange were asked to bring a gift with value of no less than $5. A monetary gift will be given to Father Sol and the annual donation to St. Thomas Church for use of their Parish Hall will be made in December.

As a club project, it was decided that all members bring canned goods for St. Thomas's Food Bank. Alice Barnes reported on items to bring and not to bring.

Rosie Steinman presented Jo Prochaska an album of photos taken at their 50th wedding anniversary party at Lodge 92. Rosie also showed pictures taken at Heritage Day, State Fair, SPJST Lodge 6's 100th Anniversary, and SPJST District Three presenting gifts and cartons of Dr. Pepper to her granddaughter, Appa Hargiss, whose picture is on the can.

Door prizes were brought by Frances Matthews, Billy King, Anna Johnson and I'm sorry, but I didn't get the name of the fourth person. Lucky winners were Billy Starr, Betty Jo Richardson, Rose Steinman and Irene Green.

Harold Balvin reported on his recent trip to the hospital with an irregular heart beat. It was great to see that he was feeling so good and was able to attend our meeting.

Lydia Alholm told of Roy's recent couple of days spent in ICU with a blood clot on his head. He is fine with the exception of not having any hair on one side of his head where it was shaved. Roy recalls being hit on the head by a limb when he failed to duck while mowing grass on the riding lawn mower, and considers himself so lucky that Lydia got him to the hospital when she did. Roy, you looked great in your baseball cap and so glad you are all right.

Lydia also reported on a wonderful time in Washington, D.C. while attending the dedication ceremonies of the Women in Military Service. She attended talks made by Vice President A. Gore and Attorney General J. Reno, and even had her picture taken in the Press Room at the White House. She said it was fun visiting with her ExWaver (Navy) friends.

Rosie Steinman reported on her trip to New York City with her daughter and granddaughter, Donna Rose and Jill Parker. Jill ran in the New York City Marathon in the rain and fog.

She ran the 26.2 miles in 6.01 hours even after taking 25 minutes to get to the starting line. There were 30,000 runners and it took 900 buses to transport the runners to the beginning point to start the race. As Jill came through the finish line, she was holding a banner which read "Hi, Grandma".

While there, the group appeared on the Today television program, visited Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, and visited Rosie's nephews, Steve Manula, who teaches at Columbia University in New York, and Mark and wife, Annie Manula, who reside in Connecticut.

Merle Kovar reported on St. Barbara's Orthodox Church Ethnic Foods Days to be held on November 7 and 8 and invited everyone to attend.

She said all nationalities are represented and she plans to make kolaches to represent the Czechs.

Irene and Harold Green reported on a wonderful time celebrating Irene's birthday while touring in Europe with their son and daughter and their spouses. They traveled to the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, and traveled by modes of transportation of plane, train, car, bus, boat and on foot. Irene said that of all the cities they visited, Prague was their favorite. Her son kept a journal of their trip, so let's hope that he will share and let us read it someday.

There being no further business to come before the meeting, it was adjourned, grace was said, lunch was served and games were played.

November hostesses were Camille Bolcer, Agnes Reznicek, Anna Sustala, and Anna's daughter, Margie Turner, who took Louise Oujesky's place, and they did a beautiful job of setting out all the food. Everyone enjoyed the fried chicken meal with all the wonderful side dishes which, were most plentiful and delicious. We were assured that all calories had been removed from all desserts. Thanks go out to Linda Homer for picking up the chicken.

Our next meeting will be December 3 and members, don't forget your Christmas gifts and food items for the needy. See you then.

Circle of Czech Women reports on November meeting Dallas

Our meeting was called to order by Vice President Alice Roberts. Vickie Kohn led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Vojteska Janicek, mother of Bertha Podhrasky, sister of Libbie Slovak, aunt of Frances Jurcik, and sister-inlaw of Vlasta Jurcik.

Alice Roberts decorated the table with a beautiful red, white and blue arrangement and a candle for the deceased. The wives of the veterans brought pictures of them in uniform and these were displayed. We thanked all of the men and women who served in the service. We had seven men veterans present and three women, Lydia Alholm, Helen Oates, and Evelyn Cechan.

Lydia Alholm and Helen Oates attended the dedication of the Monument in Washington, D.C. in honor of the women who served in the armed service. Helen said the ceremony was very nice.

In observation of Veterans Day, Esther Cunningham read a poem entitled "In Flander's Field."

President Bertha Podhrasky welcomed 30 members, seven men guests, and two visitors, Trudy Taylor, guest of Wanda Petr, and Ann McKinney, guest of Ella Mae Provazek.

Correspondence read by Evelyn Trojacek included a letter from Lydia Alholm with a picture of the monument honoring the women who served in the service. She said she attended the ceremony. She sent a picture of she and Roy. She said Roy is doing better after his accident.

A thank-you card was received from Elena Smalky and children, Bob and Esther Cunningham, for the donation to the New England Conservatory of Music Preparatory School in memory of Dr. Michael Smalky.

Georgia Brozek of the Sunshine Committee sent get-well cards to Marie Lattner, Rose Parma and the one signed by members to Millie Noska.

Sympathy cards were sent to Bertha Podhrasky, Virginia Blatney, Libbie Slovak, Vlasta Jurcik, and Anne Skrabanek.

Announcements The next meeting of the Czech Culture Society is Monday, November 24, 1997, at Sokol. Plans are being made for the Ethnic Day at the Fair next year. Bertha reported on the Ethnic Day this year. Everything was so nice and well-planned. We owe everyone a big thank-you for a job well done.

Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council will meet Monday, November 10, 1997, at Lodge 84.

Hostesses for November were Esther Cunningham, Eileen Jakubowski and Mary Sykora.

Unfinished Business Our Christmas party was discussed and we voted to have Bessie Petr cater it. The menu is chicken breast, rice, green beans, salad, mandarin orange cake and coffee or tea. The price for the dinner is $5.75 each. If you would like to attend, send your money to Vickie Kohn by December 1, 1997.

Esther and Bob Cunningham will furnish the wine.

We voted to invite Dr. and Mrs. Novak and the doctors from Brno who are here for specialized training at Southwestern Medical School to our Christmas dinner.

We will have some entertainment from Adolph Provazek and Laddie Gajdica who will play their accordions.

Theresa Carper, Florence Peressenyi, Ann McKinney, Ella Mae Provazek, Vlasta Jurcik, and Henry and Evelyn Cechan have volunteered to set up the tables and decorate the hall for our Christmas party. All of the other members are asked to help clean up after the party.

We voted to give a donation to the veterans Auxiliary Gift Shop in memory of Marie Toberney.

We also voted to give a donation to the Meals on Wheels.

Each member is to bring a donation in an envelope in exchange for gifts.

This will be donated to the Czech Doctors Fund.

Sokol Christmas Party December 19 Everyone is invited to the Sokol Christmas party on December 19, 1997, at 7 p.m. If you would like to come, bring a dessert. Bertha invited everyone to come hear and dance to the songs of the Veselanka orchestra. The Dallas Czech Orchestra will play during dinner. Dinner will be served from 1 to 3 p.m. and will consist of goulash, dumplings, sauerkraut, salad, dessert, coffee or tea for $6 for adults. The dance is from 3 to 7 p.m. for $7 for ages 16 and up.

Harbor survivors memorial ceremony set for December 7 at Fort Sam Houston Pearl

The Alamo Chapter No. 2 Pearl Harbor Survivors will hold their Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony at the Fort Sam Houston Officers Gulf Club on December 7, 1997.

Social hour starts at 11 a.m. with radio stations and television media interviewing those survivors in attendance.

Memorial services will he held at 11:45 a.m. to coincide with the 7:45 a.m. memorial services which will he held at Pearl Harbor Memorial at Honolulu, Hawaii, followed with a luncheon and a guest speaker.

Any member of the Armed Forces who served within a radius of three miles of Pearl Harbor on land or on sea is eligible to be a member of the National Order of Pearl Harbor Survivors, and their sons and daughters are eligible to join the Sons and Daughters Pearl Harbor Association.

FRANK KELLEY, of Holland who passed away on Thursday, November 6, 1997, in a Temple hospital at the age of 64.

Brother Kelley was born in Holland to Ed Kelley and Tilda Bunte. He was a lifetime resident. He married Donita Walker on October 24, 1997. He was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Prairie Dell Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Donita Kelley of Holland; a daughter, Glenda Kelley of Holland; two sons, Eddie Kelley of Salado and Johnnie Kelley of Holland; three sisters, Miriam Johnson of Temple, Louise Pace of Burleson and Linda Glenn of Fort Worth; and 10 grandchildren.

Services for Brother Kelley were at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 8 at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett with the Rev. Bobby Ellis officiating.

Burial was in the Holland Cemetery.

ARNOLD BENJAMIN SIPTAK, who passed away on Friday afternoOn, September 26, 1997, at the Caldwell Health and Rehabilitation Center in Caldwell.

Brother Siptak was horn on June 28, 1909, in Burleson County, Texas, to Joseph and Frances Macat Siptak. He was a retired rancher and earlier had been employed by H.B. Zachery Construction Company as a truck driver. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post 4458. He was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John E., William B., and Joseph H. Siptak.

Survivors include a brother and sisterin-law, Robert and Gerry Siptak of Caldwell; two sisters and a brother-inlaw, Lydia and L.J. Rode and Franies Begeman, all of Austin; a sister-in-law, Bettye Siptak of Caldwell; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Mrs. Simcik was born on August 22, 1902, in the Beyerville Community, to the late J.W. and Anna Hejl Maresh.

A homemaker, Lottie was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church, the Mutual Aid Society No. 3, and SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville.

On February 6, 1923, she was married to Albert Simcik, Sr. They shared 70 years together until the death of Albert on March 18, 1993.

Survivors are one son, Albert, and his wife Helen of Temple; a sister, Ida Kret of San Antonio; three granddaughters, Cheryl Mraz, Cindy Saffel, and Candy Heisch, all of Temple; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at 2 p.m. at Condra Memorial Chapel in Taylor with Rev. James Hejl officiating.

Burial was in the Brethren Cemetery in Granger.

Pallbearers were Kevin Morano, James Jansen, Edmond Simcik, Jason Morano, Chester Simcik, and Clifford Kret.

Mr. Sula died Wednesday, November 5 at his residence.

He was born in Oscar to George Sula and Bessie Sodek Sula. He married Wanona Schneider on May 7, 1946, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He was a banker and worked for Temple National Bank and InterFirst Bank for 40 years.

He lived in Temple before moving to Cyclone in 1978. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 47.

Survivors are his wife, Wanona Sula of Cyclone; two sons, James Sula and Wayne Sula, both of Temple; five sisters, Martha Schiller, Georgia Pavlica and Lillian Lamb, all of Temple, Ethel Huber of California, and Dorothy Mickel of New Jersey; and four grandchildren.

VICTOR FRITZ GALETKA, who passed away Thursday, October 30, 1997, at the age of 84 years.

He was born August 30, 1913, in Lavaca County to the late John and Therese Mikush Galetka. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was retired from Lavaca County Precinct No. 1. He was a member of Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church, American Legion No. 230, VFW, and a life member of SPJST Lodge 4. He also was the recipient of a 50-year pin from SPJST. Survivors include sisters, Selma Grones of Hallettsville and Evelyn Sassin of Freeport; and'brothers, Julius Galetka and Hilmer Galetka, both of Hallettsville, Emil Galetka of Lake Jackson, and Edwin Galetka of Needville.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John Galetka, Jr. Prayer service was held at 7 p.m.

Saturday, November 1 at Kubena Funeral Home Chapel. Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 2 at Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church with the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Burial was in Vsetin Cemetery.

Funeral services were held November 1, 1997, at 1 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home in Bryan.

The Revs. Keith Petteway and Jimmy Nedbalek officiated. Burial was in the Wheelock Cemetery.

Sister Kopetsky was born in Brazos County and had lived in the Macey Community all of her life. She was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Robertson County and a former member and manager of the Senior Citizens Center. She also worked for the Bryan Independent School District.

She had been a member of SPJST since 1938.

Survivors include her husband, Adolph A. Kopetsky; two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Janie Kopetsky of Bryan and Bobby and Debbie Kopetsky of Leaner, Texas; three sisters-in-law and a brother-inlaw, Maedelle Novosad of Normangee, Martha Novosad and Ruth and Paul Saunders, all of Bryan; a sister and brother-in-law, Mavis and Jim Stocker of Bryan; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek, No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish' to express our sincere and deepest Emma Holly sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, EMMA HOLLY, who passed away in Stevens Convalescent Center on Saturday, October 25 at 5 p.m. at the age of 95 years. She was born November 20, 1901, in Lavaca County to Thomas and Anna Mikush Holly. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 4 and the Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church.

Survivors include a sister, Ella Kalisek of Houston. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Gustie Sklar and Ida Buschermihle; four brothers, August Holly, Adolph Holly, Julius Holly, and Otto Holly; and three half-brothers, Anton Holly, John Holly, and Charles Holly.

Prayer service was conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday, October 27, 1997, at Kubena Funeral Home. Services

were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 28 at the Czech Moravian Brethren Church in Vsetin. Rev. Henry Beseda officiated. Burial followed in the Vsetin Cemetery, under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held November 4 at 1 p.m. at the Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

Burial was in the Wheelock Cemetery.

Sister Scasta was born in the Tabor Community and had lived in the Wheelock community all of her life.

She was a housewife and a member of the First Baptist Church of Wheelock.

She had been a member of SPJST since 1947.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.C. Scasta, Sr. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, W.C. and Joyce Scasta, Jr. of Wheelock; a sister, Anna Scasta of Wheelock; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Resolution Committee, Lillie Mae Dickson

during the rescue of the ship's survivors. He was then assigned to the USS Wake Island and continued fighting in and around the Phillipines, where he was decorated for shooting down a Japanese bomber.

He married Betty Alden in 1946 and lived in Dallas. He received his architectural degree from the University of Texas in 1950. He worked for several architectual firms in Austin and Wichta Falls before coming to Temple, where he practiced at the firm of Rucker and Logsdon.

He later practiced at Vail E. Logsdon, Architect, before entering practice at Logsdon and Voelter, Architects for more than 40 years of practice.

Buildings that he served as architect for are found at Temple College, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Temple High School, the Bell County Expo Center, the Bell County Rehabilitation Center, the Temple Post Office, the headquarters of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, and the renovation of the Stagecoach Inn and Hotel in Salado. He serve as president of the Temple Jaycees and was a member of the Lions Club. He also volunteered at the Bell County Rehabilitation Center.

Survivors are his wife, Betty Logsdon of Temple; a son, Gary Alden Logsdon of San Rafael, California; two daughters, Jeanne Logsdon Medford of Mauriceville and Lynn Logsdon Williams of The Woodlands; two sisters, Violet May Yates of Mount Sterling, Illinois, and Thelma Fletcher of Peru, Indiana; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Bell County Rehabilitation Center.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 84, Dallas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, JOHN H. SCHAERDEL, III, who passed away on November 9, 1997, at the age of 74.

He served in World War II on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hancock in the Pacific Theatre. He was a tournament water skier. He held numerous offices with Dallas Marine Association, Boating Trades of Texas, and Dallas Boat Show, Inc. He owned the Ace Boat Service Center over 25 years before retirement. He also was a member of SPJST Lodge 84.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Evelyn Schaerdel; sons, John Schaerdel and David Schaerdel; daughters, Susan Sutton and Mary Dietz; nine grandchildren; and brothers, Fred Schaerdel and Bill Schaerdel.

Funeral services were held on November 11 at Sparkman Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Richard Meyerhoff, Rev. Harold Meissner and Rev. Ray Sutton officiated. Interment was at Restland Cemetery.

Expression of Sympathy We, the resolution committee of Lodge 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge brother, VAIL EUGENE LOGSDON, 75, of Temple, who died Wednesday, November 12, 1997, at a Temple hospital.

Services were at 2 p.m. Friday, November 14 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple with the Rev. Don Vlasak officiating.

There was a private burial.

Mr. Logsdon was born in Brown County, Illinois, to Ira Edward and Lela Jane Wood Logsdon. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and graduated from the Naval Air Training Center in Pensacola, Florida, as a naval aviator.

He also attended night fighter school in Key West, Florida. He served aboard the USS Ommaney Bay, seeing action in the Phillipines during the Seventh Fleet invasion from late 1944 to January 4, 1945, when the ship was sunk by a torpedo. He received citations for valor and meritorious service

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge 80, Holland, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, LAURA S. JESCHKE of Holland who passed away Sunday, November 16, 1997, in a Bartlett nursing home at the age of 89.

Sister Jeschke was born to Henry Steinhauser and Betty Springhorn in Bell Plains and lived in Bartlett most of her life. She married Bill Jeschke on September 28, 1927. He died November 30, 1965. She was a homemaker and was active in Holland senior citizen activities. She was a Lutheran.

Survivors are a daughter, Virginia Benner of Holland; a son, William Jeschke of Brownsboro; a half-brother, Billy Ray Steinhauser of Waco; a stepbrother, Bob Barton of Holland; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services for Sister Jeschke were at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18 at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett

District Five Youth Club members active in District Five fall meeting

had a district LIT meeting scheduled for Sunday, October 5 to plan the lockin.

After our meeting, we joined the adults in playing bingo. I think everyone had a great time. I know I did.

Dear District Five Readers and SPJST Members, Our Fall District Five meeting was held on Sunday, September 21 at the American Legion Hall in Crosby, Texas. After a brief meeting, a very delicious lunch was served. The youth club members had a meeting and we voted to donate $100 to purchase a brick at the Sam Houston Monument in Huntsville, Texas.

Last April, our district youth took a field trip to Huntsville and saw Sam Houston's monument, his museum, his home and the Steamboat house where he was born. This was a very educational trip. While visiting his monument we saw many names on bricks from people who helped support the museum. We thought it would be great to also help and made our donation.

So the next time you travel by the monument, stop in and look for "SPJST District V Youth." We also stopped at the Huntsville State Prison Museum and saw "Old Sparky."

We also had our Christmas Ornament contest. The winners were: Kyle Castillo (ages 6 to 8); Jason Castillo (ages 9 to 11); Natalie Zalesky (ages 12 to 14); and Kristen Bender (ages 15 to Senior).

Lodge 196, Houston-West donated their hall for a District Five lock-in. It was held on Friday, October 17. We

District Five Royalty participate in Lodge 172 and Lodge 88 festivities Dear SPJST Readers, On Sunday, October 19, the 11th Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival was held at Lodge 172 in Pasadena.

Melanie Nunally, District Five Duchess, and I, Kristen Bender, District Five Queen, were introduced at the opening ceremonies. We also participated in the parade of costumes.

Melanie and I also enjoyed the children's craft display and enjoyed making the snowflake Christmas ornaments and decorating the St. Nicholas cookies. The cookies were good to eat, also.

On Sunday, October 26, we also participated in the Lodge 88 Czech Day festivities. We were accompanied

by Justin Miller, District Five King, and Nicholas Godwin, District Five Duke. We were introduced at the opening ceremonies and later in the evening we led the grand march.

As a lot of you know, I attended these district appearances on crutches.

After several weeks, the crutches are now gone and I am in physical therapy.

Thank you to everyone for all your fine words of encouragement.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club reports on November meeting The November 9, 1997, meeting of Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club was

called to order at 2 p.m. by President Curtis Dorotik.

Chad Dorotik led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. There were 21 members present and seven adults.

Guests introduced were Kirstin Stubbs.

The minutes were read and approved. Jason Kaspar gave the treasurer's report. Fund raising plans for this month are the 100 Pennies Drive.

The charity project for this month will be giving magazines to Wharton County Clinic.

Our youth leader Lisa Bubela reported about the Texas Fraternal Congress and the upcoming Christmas social.

Youth members enjoyed having fruit, cookies, candy and hot chocolate for refreshments. Refreshments were served by Crystal Roye, Brent Gold and Travis Krpec.

The after-meeting activities were taking project pictures and practicing dance routines.

The next youth club meeting will be December 14 at 10:45 a.m. at the Taiton Community Center.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:10 p.m.

District Five Young People Enjoy Monumental Outing Sam Houston stands tall over these District Five young people who enjoyed a field trip to see the monument. Youth club members voted to contribute $100 to the monument project. In turn, they will have a commemorative brick inscribed "SPJST District V Youth" placed at the site.

The History of Czech Music Czech music, from classical to folk has a magical attraction.

The music binds families, children, their longings and their dreams. Music has always played a major role for Czech families whether it was at a small family gettogether, a wedding, or a festival. Of course, a little dancing would accompany the music. It was a good way for the Czechs to vent a little steam after a day's or week's hard work. Music to the Czechs was an elixir for overcoming some of the difficulties encountered in their day-to-day living — and especially for those early settlers in America who were starting a new life.

Even though Czechoslovakia (now Czech and Slovak Republics) is a small country in Central Europe, it has produced several world famous composers. Those who are familiar with classical music will recognize the names of Bedrich Smetana and Antonin Dvorak. Smetana's most famous opera, "The Bartered Bride," is played in opera houses throughout the world. Dvorak was a violinist and performed at the Czech National Opera in Prague under Smetana. He composed "Symphony No. 9 From The New World " which is world famous. Those who prefer a more lively beat of marches, polkas, and waltzes, might enjoy the music of Czech songwriter Jaromir Vejvoda. Vejvoda wrote "Skoda Lasky," more comonly known as "The Beer Barrel Polka."

state of Texas is the Leo Majek Orchestra from Corpus Christi.

They have been in existence for more than 95 years and are in high demand to perform at various festivities throughout the state. Other popular bands that perform throughout the state are the Leroy Matocha Orchestra, Bobby Jones Czech Band, The City Polka Boys, and The Vrazels.

Personal Favorite The band that is my favorite and that I grew up listening and dancing to is Edwin Gaas and The Top Five.

This band is very special to me because the head singer is my grandfather, Edwin J. Gaas, better known to his grandchildren as "Pa".

Edwin Gaas and The Top Five organized in Frenstat, Texas, in 1950.

Pa first started playing his guitar at the Cedar Hill Store outside on the front porch. He also played on the front porch of friends in the Frenstat area.

Later, they were asked to play in public as a band.

The original band consisted of five members. They were Albin Horak, Sr., Harold Hosea, Eddie Hosea, Stanley Zgabay, and of course, Edwin Gaas. When Edwin Gaas and The Top Five first began, they played mostly polkas and waltzes. Today, depending on the dance crowd, Pa and his band, which now consists of Edwin Gaas, Jeff Gaas, Bobby Franks, James Vrana, and Andy Smith, play country and western music as well.

Anytime I go to a dance at Frenstat and Pa is playing I can always count on hearing "The Greenmeadow Waltz," "Fraulein," "Play, Play, Play," and country songs like"Your Cheating Heart" and "I Wouldn't Change You If I Could."

When I asked Pa his favorite song, he said, "I believe I would have to say `Fraulein'". Edwin Gaas and The Top Five play their music at weddings, nursing homes, family gatherings, the Kolache Festival, or wherever anyone wants to hear a good polka and waltz band.

In Texas, Czech music continues to thrive and Czech traditions are still carried out. So, if you are ever in our area, pull up a chair and listen to a good polka or waltz.

Here in Texas Locally, here in Texas where there are many Czech communities and Czech is the third most spoken language in the state, music has played a key role in the Czech culture.

Going as far back as the 1850s, many of the early Czech settlers were good musicians and some families formed bands which provided entertainment to festivities such as weddings, church picnics, and town festivals. One of the early bands was Ray Baca out of Fayetteville, Texas, which performed a variety of marches, polka and waltzes.

Another band that originated almost 150 years ago was the Krenek Orchestra and founded in Pisek, Texas, near Fayetteville. In later years this band was known as the Ray Krenek Band and played polkas and waltzes. Currently, one of the most popular bands in the

of their homeland. I have gone back several times to visit the Czech lands to see where my father was born and to see where my grandparents on both sides of my family lived. I can tell you that this area reminds me of those places. I know that is why so many of the Czechs selected this area when they came to Texas."

Excited about the LaGrange location, she said the city and surrounding communities were the first homes of Czech ancestors.

"They came here to find a better way of life in a land of opportunity," she said.

The location, which sits on about 50 acres, will give visitors an opportunity to focus on the past and present contributions of Czech descent, Chandler said, adding that it is gstimated that nearly a million Texans share a Czech heritage.

"The project started in early 1996 when representatives of Czech-founded organizations came together with the common goal of leaving children a place where they could learn about the traditions they cherish.

"Indebted to our parents and grandparents for preserving so much of our heritage to this point, we feel now is the time for us to provide a place that is large enough to experience those traditions," she said.

She recognized the Czech-founded organizations in Texas whose leaders maintain archives, museums, sponsor youth groups and continue to preserve much of the Czech culture.

Those organizations include SPJST, KJT, KJZT, RVOS, WFLA, SOKOL, CSA, Czech Heritage Society, Czech Ex-Students of Texas,

"Some marvel that our culture and language survived at all since there was basically no communication for many years between our people and the Czech lands," she said. Texas Czech Heritage

and Cultural Center Plans Czech Gala A Czech Gala is being sponsored by the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center on Sunday, November 30, 1997, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 190 South Brown in LaGrange, Texas.

Entertainment for the dinner/dance will be provided by the Veselanka Orchestra from the village of Vesela in the Czech Republic. Due to popular demand, the Veselanka Orchestra, which has been in existence for 31 years, is returning to Texas for their third tour. The orchestra, which consists of eight musicians, not only performs a repertoire of traditional Czech waltzes and polkas, but also music from the big band era and a selection of country/western tunes.

The Fayette Czech Singers and Dancers, featuring Donna and Guenter Merkle performing authentic Czech folk dances, will provide additional entertainment. A silent auction will also be held. Fellowship program. As Fellows, graduate students who are studying American literature at universities in the Czech Republic would come to Texas A&M to pursue their master's or doctoral degrees in English while they teach Czech language courses in the local communities.

The Czech Republic recently gave $5,000 to CEFT to help the organization reach its goal of $250,000.

"The assistance of the Czech government and its official recognition of our project is very gratifying," said Clinton Machann, chairman of the board of directors of CEF1' and a Texas A&M English professor. "We will be getting some of the very best graduate students interested in studying American culture.

This is the only program of its kind in the United States."

According to Machann, the Czech students will be required to perform certain duties for the general public in addition to their academic studies.

"Besides conducting Czech classes, the CEFT fellows will provide Czechto-English translations and act as consultants to Czech heritage museums, ethnic festivals and events," Machann said.

About $100,000 is needed to fully fund the quarter-million dollar permanent endowment. Contributions can be made to either CEFT or the Texas A&M Foundation.

Machann co-chaired a discussion on the preservation and development of the Czech heritage in the United States, which was the basis of CEFT, at a conference sponsored by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, D.C., October 18-19.

Czech ensemble to sing

Advent Concert at St. Christopher Parish in Houston, Texas

St. Christopher Parish, located at 8150 Park Place in Houston, will host an Advent Concert of the great hymns and carols of Moravia (the eastern region of the Czech Republic) on Thursday, December 4, 1997, the feast of St. Barbara, at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The candlelight concert will be sung by an eight-member ensemble named Veselanka (from Vesela, Moravia). It will include Christmas carols (Koledy). The concert will be dedicated to the memory of Bishop John L. Morkovsky (19091991) who, for many years, invited people to his home at Christmas to sing the Koledy. Two teachers in Brno have developed an interactive computer program to teach Czech language and history.

How is your Czech? Fluent in food but not much else? Have you mastered survival Czech and want to advance yourself a little more? Are you puzzled by the Hussite Revolution?

The technology you have been waiting for is here. Two teachers from Brno have developed an interactive computer program, WinCzEduc, delivering instruction in the Czech language in the form of 18 lessons derived from Czech history.

Five years ago, Christopher Toussaint was vacationing in Prague, bought a Czech language book, went home to his native city of Strasbourg, France, studied a little Czech, and won himself a position teaching French at the Pedagogical Faculty of Masaryk in University Brno. Once there, he was troubled by the lack of computer technology and decided to make an attempt to advance the level of software available in the Czech market.

"We need to improve worldwide the way we teach languages to foreigners," Toussaint says.

"Computers do so much today. It is time to use them to help with education."

He decided to put his energy into developing a Czech history and language CD-ROM. "I chose to use Czech history as the basis for the language lessons because Czech history is very important not only for the Czech Republic, but for all European history."

The CD-ROM program uses English as the medium of instruction.

"The software is not only for native English speakers; it is also good for the international community," Toussaint says. "There are businessmen in Prague from all over the world, and English is the language they use to communicate with one another ... but if they are living here in Prague, I think they must learn the Czech language, too.

Jeffrey Brown, an American colleague of Toussaint's at the Pedagogical Faculty, joined the project three years ago after Toussaint approached him to translate the Czech text prepared by Clara Orsorso, a linguist from the College of Arts in Brno.

Brown originally intended simply to translate the text but became more involved with marketing once he saw the program and realized its potential.

"It is the first of its kind," Brown says of the CD-ROM. "It offers the

Although sales were slow in the beginning, Toussaint and Brown say the response has been uniformly positive. "It is a great learning tool," Brown says. "Once people see it, they know it."

Toussaint and Brown are now making trips to Prague, taking their CD-ROM on the road, and quite an impressive CD-ROM it is. The program comes complete with a CDROM jukebox, from which users have the option of listening to music by Dvorak, Smet ana, or other composers while perusing the history and language lessons.

A voice function allows users to click on a word and hear its proper pronunciation. To give the users better visual understanding of Czech history, Brown and Toussaint have added maps from various time periods.

Another command enables users to store specific bits of grammar or certain sections of the lesson of particular interest and to print these out in an end-of-lesson report, personalizing the program for individual users. In all, there are more than 20,000 Czech words translated in the 18 lessons and 1,000 words analyzed in terms of declension, conjugation, aspect and gender.

Price Waterhouse, Andersen Consulting, Ford Motor Company and other international business companies have purchased the program for their foreign employees working here in Prague. "The expats working here are worked hard, sometimes 10hour days. They don't always have time for taking classes. This is a great tool because it can be used at the office," says Brown.

Those wanting to preview the program can find a demonstration disk at The Globe Bookstore. Toussaint and Brown emphasize that it is not their intention that the CD-ROM replace the language teacher. Rather, it should supplement the benefits of having a native speaker as an instructor. "You can't replace a living person. But this is a great tool," Brown says.
