Just a Reminder

Pages 10 and 11 of last week's Vestnik included two member surveys - one for adults and one for young people. If you haven't already done so, please take the time to complete and mail in the form. Survey results will appear in the Vestnik and be considered by the Supreme Lodge in developing new family-oriented programming. To encourage your participation and prompt reply, all surveys received on or before the November 26 deadline will go into a drawing.

Top prize is $100.

Twenty other prizes will also be presented.

And, as previously stated in the Vestnik, the directory will include the broadest range of service providers.

Everything from accountants, auto mechanics and caterers to musicians, beauticians and builders. Part-time business owners and those who produce seasonal commodities - ranging from hay to firewood - are also encouraged to participate. Only those listings which are deemed "questionable" or those which promote life insurance or other financial products available through the SPJST, will not be printed in the directory.

If your listing appeared in the 1997 SPJST Member Services Directory, it is not necessary for you to resubmit your entry - only additions or changes.

'4' It's Good for Business

Again, in January 1998, the SPJST will be publishing The SPJST Member Services Directory. As its name suggests, the directory seeks to provide a listing of SPJST sales representatives and members who are in positions to provide various products and services for other SPJST members. The directory is published for the sole use of our members and is based on the idea of "members helping members." There is no charge for directory listings and the only prerequisite is that you are an SPJST member.

In addition to providing a quick reference to local SPJST lodges and sales representatives, the directory will list members who are in a position to provide you with a wide range of products and services.

You're always welcome to visit the SPJST Heritage Museum, located in the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas. The SPJST Home Office is located at 520 North Main in Temple. A major goal of the SPJST Museum is to preserve the Czech cultural heritage by teaching Czech history and traditions, It also stands as a memorial to the pioneer Czech forefathers and mothers who settled Texas. Museum hours are Monday - Friday, 8 - 12 and 1 - 5 and on weekends by special arrangement.

Czech President Vaclav Havel autographs anniversary posters Thanks to fraternalism and overseas connections, Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel is a part of SPJST's 100th Anniversary. President Havel autographed five poster prints promoting the anniversary tarok tournament, and four of these five were recently presented at the SPJST Home Office in Temple.

The story behind obtaining the autographs began in the spring. In talking with Brother Jerry Elzner of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz brought up the idea of getting Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel's autograph to use in promoting the SPJST's Centennial celebration.

Brother Elzner accepted the challenge.

Sister Rosenkranz sent several colorful posters promoting SPJST's 100th Anniversary Tarok Tournament to Brother Elzner. In turn, Brother Elzner sent these to his friend, Jan Vodnansky, a beloved actor and cultural icon in the Czech Republic. Through mutual friends, Mr. Vodnansky was able to get President Havel's autographs on the posters. "The autographs are really neat," Sister Rosenkranz said.

"President Havel draws a little heart under his signature . . . at least he did for us."

Supreme Lodge President. Howard Leshikar and Sister Rosenkranz presented the first framed and autographed poster to the SPJST Museum.

Museum Curator Dorothy Pechal accepted the print which is now on display in the museum.

The second poster went to Jerry Elzner for his efforts in obtaining President Havel's signature.

The third poster went to District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky for his devotion to the game of taroks.

Director Klinkovsky served as the State FAC for nine years. During that time, he oversaw all SPJST tarok tournaments. He continues to teach the game and volunteer his assistance at tournaments across the state.

The fourth poster went to Franklin Schlesinger, a member of Lodge 29, Taylor. According to Sister Rosenkranz, "Franklin has been essential in bringing the ancient game of taroks into the 21st century." An avid player and collector of tarok memorabilia, Brother Schlesinger developed a computerized spreadsheet that records play-by-play action of the game and instant scoring. For some time, he has been bringing his computer and providing assistance at area tarok tournaments.

Around the State Lodge 107, Floresville hosts District Seven Family Fun Day The District Seven Family Fun Day, hosted by Lodge 107, Floresville, was held Sunday, November 2, 1997.

President Frances McDonald called the meeting to order at 11:30 a.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Stacey Branham.

The roll call of officers noted the treasurer was absent.

Lodges represented were 79, 107, 117, 133, 161, 185, and 202.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar extended greetings and would he available to answer questions.

State FAC Barbara Rosenkranz stressed the importance of lodges and members reporting fraternal acts, hours and charitable contributions.

District Sales Representative Jim Wiest noted the sales representatives enrolled in FIC classes are Jerry

Elzner, Helen Pavelka, Dorothy Wiest, George Wiest, Bob Bayer, Polly Bayer, Wendy Pruski, Kathryn Marek, and Linda Ramey.

Director Bob Bayer mentioned the survey in the Vestnik and urged everyone to complete and mail it back to the Supreme Lodge. Director Bayer also noted that money is available to loan.

District Youth Counselor Susan Bohnenberger announced that 100th Anniversary tee-shirts and sweatshirts are still available for purchase.

District FAC Glen Pruski asked everyone to sign up for games.

Contest judges were Suzy Wiest, Viola Kurtz, and Barbara Rosenkranz.

The District Seven Spring Meeting will be hosted by Lodge 185, New Braunfels.

After lunch, everyone enjoyed some beautiful music, and even some had fun dancing. Thanks so very much to Jimmy Nemec for sharing his accordion playing talents with us.

Brother Krizan received many nice cards and gifts, even a "surprise gift," which you will have to ask him about (he wouldn't let me tell). We all got to share in his joy of opening his gifts.

Lodge 24, Cyclone elects 1998 officers, plans holiday calendar Dear Readers, The meeting was called to order by President Brian Vanicek. He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in memory of our deceased members.

Secretary Rhonda Greger read the minutes. They were approved as read.

Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Richard Greger gave us a report on activities.

Reports were given by Treasurer Penny Coots, Bar Chairman Terry Coots, Kitchen Chairman LaVerne Cabla, and Hall Manager Bobby Hoelscher.

Youth Leader Patsy Baker gave us a report and also thanked all who helped with the youth club Halloween party.

It was a fun time, especially the clown that entertained us who was none other then our President Brian Vanicek. She thanked all that helped in making the breakfast at the cookoff and donated sweets to sell at the countywide sale.

The cookoff was a big success due to the Chairman Harold Vanicek, Sr. Our thanks go to him for his work.

During the cookoff, they acknowledged Louise Zavodny for she was the person who organized it three years ago and was in charge all three years.

The kitchen crew who was led by LaVerne Cabla and Pat Sebek did a good job. The chili was a big hit.

They want to thank all that helped in any way with the meal on Friday night and Saturday.

Christmas Party December 13 We again discussed our Christmas party which will be Saturday, December 13, starting at 5 p.m. with a memorial service. The youth club program is at 5:30 p.m. The meal is around 6 p.m. followed with a social.

So make plans for this. Turkey and dressing will be furnished. Members are asked to bring vegetables, salads and desserts. Social committee members are LaVerne Cabla, David Nauert and Richard Greger.

New members are Diane Marie Wilde, Rachel Taylor Herzer and Ryan Christopher Snow. We welcome you to our membership.

30, Taiton plans December 14 Christmas dinner and social Lodge

Lodge 30, Taiton will have their annual Christmas social on Sunday, December 14 at the Taiton Community Center. All members and their families are welcome to attend.

The turkey, fried chicken and dressing will be catered and the members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to complete the meal. The meal will be served at 12 noon, with a short business meeting immediately following.

The adult and youth clubs are collecting toys for the Texas Department of Protective Services in Wharton County.

Cash donations will also be accepted.

All members, both young and old, are asked to donate to this worthy cause.

THE CROWD THAT ROARED — State Fraternal Activities Coordinator and "Bell Ringer" Barbara Rosenkranz reports that she "feared for her life" every time she rang the bell, signaling the end of another round. "The roar at the end of each round and the fact that the score-keepers had to shout to hear each other offered proof that this group was having a 'jolly time' at the Lodge 48, Beyersville '42' Tournament," said the State FAC.

Lodge 88, Houston hosts enjoyable Czech Day celebration We all were as happy as President Clara Broz on the Czech Day Celebration being a big success! The huge crowd of guests seemed to be very happy enjoying the entertainment furnished by our Choral Club, our Concert Orchestra, and the dance by Donna and Gunter Merkel's group. Many guests also enjoyed dancing to that good music of Lee Roy Matocha and Donnie Wavra. There were many members working hard and deserve our thanks!

We were happy to see guests from the Supreme Lodge: Editor Brian Vanicek and his family; President Howard Leshikar; and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz.

I was so glad to see and get to talk with Lee Roy Matocha. Our mother used to come with us to our dances, and we Krejcis have fond memories of Lee Roy playing "U Studanky Sedela" for Mother; it was her favorite. So thanks, Lee Roy, for the happiness you gave our dear mother.

What is the SPJST Newborn Benefit?

The SPJST Newborn Benefit is a non-contractual faraternal benefit that provides $1,500 of automatic insurance coverage for children born into families where both parents are SPJST members at least 60 days prior to the birth of the child. Or, one parent, in the case of single parent families, will satisfy the requirement. The $1,500 automatic coverage for the child will begin from calendar day 3 through calendar day 90.

Dear Members and Friends, As it is always said, good news first. So I am happy to write something that is better than had news.

Kenneth and Mary Krivanek announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Cecelia Krivanek to Mr. Joel Russell Lemons. The couple plans to he married on January 17, 1998, in Fort Worth. Mary Cecelia has been a member of Lodge 92 since just after she was born. She is the leader of the Memory Makers that sing Czech songs, and she always sings the National Anthem and the Czech National Anthem when we have something at our lodge. Mary Cecelia is always active in our lodge activities.

Now for the not-so-good news .

Brother Raymond Hubenak has had to have his other leg amputated. We all hated to hear this, Raymond. Our prayers are with you and also keep the faith.

Frank Tesar, Sr. had to have a knee replacement in the past few days but he is trying to walk some.

Roy Alholm was cutting grass a while back and hit his head on a tree branch but did not think much of it, but he started having headaches. On October 30 while they were out having lunch, he started to fall out of the chair.

So with help, Lydia took him home but he could not stand up on his feet.

Lydia called 911 and he was taken to the hospital where they said he had a blood clot in his head. They made two holes in his head and blood came flowing out. So that relieved the pressure of headaches. So now he is home and feeling fine again. He had a close call.

Anna Lesikar fell while attending her grandson's wedding and had to be taken to the hospital with a back injury.

She is now at home but still -is very sore. She came to our game night on November 4.

At our game night, we had a large attendance. A young lady came to play taroks but I forgot her name (please excuse). John Kubala from Pilot Point and lots of the regulars

—SPJST1997. She was born December 22, 1904, in Malenovece, Moravia, which is now part of the Czech Republic. At age 2, she came with her parents to the United States to the port of Galveston, Texas. She was a good Czech lady raising a family and working on the farm.

She could pick 400 pounds of cotton in a day. She also pulled corn, had a garden, and many other things that goes with farm work. Vojteska Janicek is survived by brothers Charlie and Victor Juricek; sisters Annie Mullins, Libbie Slovak, and Vlasta Childres; daughters, Ann Zurovetz and Bertha Podhrasky; son, George Janicek; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson. Our sympathy to the family of Vojteska Janicek from our lodge and also ,from other lodges in Texas.

After our lodge meeting on November 9, 1997, I will write about the election of officers. God bless to each of you.

Lodge 182, Falls Coun plans December 6 Holiday supper Lodge 182, Falls County met on October 26 with the call to order by the president. We met in a different place — in Chilton, Texas, on Main Street

Lodge 135, Ennis Honors Jerry Chudej On October 5, 1997, Lodge 135, Ennis had their meeting at noon at the Sokol Hall in Ennis. The lodge served a delicious noon meal of barbecue and sausage with all the trimmings. There were 50 members present. After the noon meal, Mr, Jerry Chudej of Lodge 135 was presented his 50-year membership pin.

Everyone had a very enjoyable time.

The lodge had a prize drawing and

next to Treat's Repair Shop. This will be our new meeting place. The next meeting will be November 23.

The minutes of last meeting were read and approved. All officers were present. We proceeded with old and new business. As a members' project, we decided to make some bags and small baskets for the nursing home as awarded several door prizes. After the meal and meeting, the members participated in a cake walk for the Ennis Meals on Wheels. There were many beautiful and delicious cakes available to the winners.

It was very inspiring to attend a function at a visiting lodge and see such good fellowship among the lodge members. Lodge 135, keep up the good work!

The annual reunion of the family of John John Sebek and Frances Koslovsky Sebek will be held at SPJST

Lodge 24, Cyclone (Flag Hall) on Saturday, December 6, 1997.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. The meal will be served by 12:30 p.m.

Meat, bread and tea will be provided.

Each family is asked to bring vegetables, salads and sweets.

Celebrates Czech Heritage Week

Residents of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor observed Czech Heritage week with a party at the home on Wednesday, October 22. Guest speaker for the event was Dorothy Bohac of the Travis-Williamson County Czech Heritage Society, who talked about the importance of preserving and promoting Czech heritage and culture in Texas. Celebrants, pictured above, from left, are: S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Chairman Dan Balusek and his wife, Ann, Assistant Administrator Diane Volek, Administrator Woody Richards and Executive Chef Wayne Jacobs.

6, Cottonwood Youth Club to present Christmas program Lodge

Dear Readers: The youth club held their monthly meeting on Sunday, November 2. We discussed the upcoming craft show at Linden Hall, crafts for rest home residents for Christmas and our annual Christmas Program.

We will begin working on our craft for the rest home on Friday nights. We need everyone's help in getting this craft completed by the middle of December.

The youth will present a program at the annual Christmas Party. I would like for all the youth to participate in the program.

The appreciation party hosted by the lodge was a success. I would like to thank the youth for calling bingo.

They did a good job and everyone enjoyed playing.

The District Three meeting was held at our lodge. The youth presented a short program after the meal. They did a good job. Our youth club would like to thank Justin Engelke for reading a poem in our program.

Dear Readers, The Lodge 9 Youth Club had their monthly meeting on Wednesday, November 5. We had one new member, Bradley Shelfer. Everyone brought a bag of fruit to give to the elderly and a coat or blanket to give to the needy.

(SPJST) includes a shining star inscribed in its emblem. The star represents sovereignty. The SPJST is an independent organization, that can truly be represented by a shining star.

The Texas flag depicts one lone white star on a brilliant field of blue.

To the right there are two horizontal bands: a field of white atop a field of a red. Each of the colors has a meaning. The field of blue represents loyalty, the red stands for courage, and the white means liberty. These proud words define themes important to the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST). Not only does the Texas flag have these three colors, the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the Czech Republic share these colors as well.

These three colors reflect a common symbolism.

Let us begin with blue. Loyalty is the strong, lasting affection and support of people. At the beginning of any youth club meeting, adult meeting, and every time we put the flag up at camp, we say the Pledge of Allegiance. This enables us to display the loyalty we have for our country. At major district functions, such as the fall and spring meetings, and at Youth Achievement Day, we sing our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, followed by the Czech national anthem, Kde Domo Muj (Where is my Home). Singing these national anthems reminds us of our country's struggles, and also establishes a connection to the home land of our forefathers. Without loyalty, we probably would not be where we are today.

Red is the universal color of courage. Courage is the strength to overcome fear and face danger.

SPJST has numerous activities involving the youth where they have the opportunity to overcome fear and grow more courageous. Attending meetings, submitting ideas, participating at Youth Achievement Day (YAD), and attending workshops are just a few of the places where the youth must overcome the fear of public appearances and meeting new people. YAD involves presenting your best work in competition with someone else's best work. YAD also includes individual talent contests, group, talent contests, and royalty competition, where you must step out on a stage and give a performance in an auditorium filled with SPJST members and guests. When you stand on the stage with huge spotlights shining, and deliver your best performance you display

Written by Karen Bender of Lodge 88, Houston. Karen is the SPJSTs 1997 State Merit Point Winner. A prerequisite to receiving the award, the essay expresses her observations on the flag and active membership in the SPJST. courage which can only be represented by a shining star.

At the annual Leaders in Training (LIT) workshop, the counselors challenged all the young people to climb a large tower rising vertically three stories. The only safety device provided was a harness to which a small rope was attached. The wall had two-by-four boards cut into sixinch pieces and nailed to the wall at different intervals and spacing. To climb to the top using only these little blocks scared many of the youth.

Climbing to this height was made easier by hearing our friends on the ground cheering us on and giving us the courage that we needed to make it up to the top and ring the hell.

Writer Michael DeMontaigne wrote in an essay of his, "Courage is found by trying, it is held within."

The final color represented in our great flag is white. White stands for purity and liberty. Liberty is defined as the ability to act, think, or speak the way one pleases. SPJST also encourages individual and group social responsibility. Growing up in the youth program, one is able to become oneself and act as he or she pleases. This is mainly expressed in the meetings. During the May youth club meeting, the officers are nominated by members and voted on by members. Having this democratic process, the youth are completely in charge and they have to make up their minds based on the good of the program. We must always remember, "The God, who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time."

By being a part of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, you embody the characteristics of the three flags that are proudly flown at lodges around the state.

If you compare the flags you will find all three have red and white bands and a field of blue. The SPJST is truly the shining star of Texas, because like that one star on the Texas flag, the fifty stars on the United States Flag, or the white field on the Czech Republic flag, it represents liberty. Texas has been growing for over 150 years and the SPJST has been growing for over 100 years, the two have developed and shine brilliantly upon each other.

66, Waco Youth Club Welcomes New Member Lodge

On Sunday, October 19, three circles from Lodge 84, Dallas performed the Beseda in front of the Hall of State for Heritage Day. Afterwards, dancers enjoyed the fair.

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club reports on November meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The November 9, 1997, meeting of Lodge No, 9 Youth Club was called to order at 3:50 p.m. by President Chad Cervenka. Kendra Zak, led the Pledge of Allegiance. The register was read.

There were 16 members present and 10 adults. Guests introduced were Kelly from Granger.

The minutes were read and approved by Jennifer Green. Lacy Cervenka gave the treasurer's report.

Fund raising plans for this month are making kolaches at Hutto Elementary.

This month's social was a Vanishing River Cruise at Lake Buchanan before our meeting at 11 a.m. We had lots of fun and had lots of youth attend.

Christmas Play December 14 Our Youth Leader Carol Tallas reported on several things. First, we discussed having a Christmas play on December 14. Every youth member is to bring a homemade Christmas ornament.

The District Two lock-in is set for 8 p.m. through 8 a.m. at the Taylor SPJST Hall after the state volleyball tournament on November 15.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:45 p.m.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club Goes Bowling

Connor Daniel Vanecek is the son of Tim and Donna Vanecek.

He is six years old. His two brothers are Kyle, age eight, and Collin, age two.

Connor enjoys soccer and his team is the 1997 Division One Champs. Connor also likes playing outside with his big brother, watching cartoons, camping, the Tiger Cub Pack 167, and his computer. Connor is also counting the days until Camp Val Verde. He attends school at St. Paul Lutheran in Taylor, Texas.

Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society Meets November 23 The Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society of the Concho Valley will hold its last quarterly meeting on Sunday, November 23, 1997, in the SPJST Hall in Rowena, Texas.

A holiday meal will be served at 1 p.m. The Society will furnish a turkey and a ham, which will he smoked by Vice President David Blazek of San Angelo.

At the August 17 meeting, members signed up to bring their favorite side dishes to accompany the dinner.

Following the meal, the business meeting will start at 2:30 p.m.

Election of officers and directors for 1998 will he had. State and local membership dues will he collected.

President Louis Kokes extends an

invitation to all members and their families, and guests and prospective members for the festive dinner and good fellowship.

College offers Czech language classes Czech language classes will be offered at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, in the spring of 1998.
