100 Pennies Scholarship Drive
Contributions to the SPJST's 1997 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive totaled $1,994.79 through the first three weeks of October .
Scholarship awards to increase in '98 The SPJST Supreme Lodge
voted at their October meeting to increase the amount of each general scholarship award from $500 to $750. The change becomes effective in 1998. On a related note, contributions to the SPJST's 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive totaled $1,994.79 through the first three weeks of October. This compares favorably with the $1,079 that was raised during the first three weeks of the 1996 drive. In an effort to express thanks and acknowledge your gifts, a listing of contributors will appear at regular intervals in the Vestnik. The names of contributors giving $50 or more will be printed in bold type. SPJST officials attend NFCA annual meeting More than 875 delegates and their guests gathered September 24 to 27 for the 111th annual meeting of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto, Canada. The NFCA is a trade association of nearly 100 fraternal benefit societies that provide insurance and volunteer opportunities to 10 million members throughout the. United States and Canada. SPJST delegates attending included President Howard Leshikar, Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir, District Four Director and Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman Stanley Broz, District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky, and District Five Director Louis Hanus.
Convention Topics Convention attendees heard from a number of speakers, including Fred Grandy, president and chief executive officer of Goodwill Industries International, who addressed "The Role of Nonprofits in the 21st Century," and John Dutton, former AAL executive who is now special assistant to the president of the Points of Light Foundation, whose topic was "America's Promise." Other general session speakers included Steve Weber of AAL, "Building Capabilities: Partnerships, Alliances and More;" Edward Ebert, Modern Woodmen, "Asthma, Emphysema and Pulmonary Function Tests;" and Kay Weston, Aon Risk Services, and Annette Hollingsworth, Employers Reinsurance Group, "What You Don't Know Can Hurt You . . . Cover Your Assets." Robert Mitchell, Western Catholic Union, discussed "Cooperative Ventures/Pooling Resources;" David Tetzlaff, NFCA Executive Vice President, "Million Dollar Consultant for Free;" Tim Leikip, AAL, "Catching the Spirit of Fraternalism;" and Richard Kirk, A.M. Best Co., "Creating Your Best Plan . . . How to Protect or Improve Your A.M. Best Rating." Three fraternalists Joseph Gadbois, Catholic Family Life Insurance; John Manna, Woodmen of the World; and Lela Mae Fields, Order of the Sons of Hermann in the State of Texas—shared their experiences in using fraternal activities and benefits to help increase sales. Diane Dupuy of Famous People Players taught attendees to "Throw Your Heart Over the Fence" and Dee Ann Costa, Independent Order of Foresters, reminded the crowd that "You Don't Have to be Old to be a Fraternalist." Woody Eno, AAL's secretary and general counsel, moderated a panel discussion titled, "Get Aggressive (Continued on page 4.)
