Lodge 15, Buckholts and Lodge 18, Elgin Celebrate Centennial on Sunday

Two lodges in District Two observe thei r 100th anniversary celebrations this weekend: Lodge 15, Buckholts (Inc L=ackie 18, Elgin. A pie-Jre of the first lodge home of Lodge 15 is not avcaiiu:-.Jie. It was dediectie on July 4, 1911, and subsequently destroyed by a storm in August 1915. The photo on the left shows Lodge 15's second lodge home which was constructed in 1915.

The lodge's third and present lodge hall was constructed in 1936. Members and well-wishers are encouraged to come out to Lodge 15, Buckholts this Sunday, October 5 and enjoy a sausage and ham dinner along with various games and activities. Cindy just won a $5,000 prize to contribute to the charity of her choice. For the second year in a row, Cindy selected the SPJST Scholarship Program to receive the gift. Read all about it in Cindy's letter on page three.

invites members and friends to join them at their lodge hall for a celebralion that will include a free dance from 3 - 7 p.m. with music by Chris Rybak of Hallettsville. Door prizes will be given throughout the event. For details, see page 4. Pictured above is the Lodge 18 hall, shortly after it was completed in 1975. Many hours of labor and financial aid were donated by the members and friends in the community. Prior to its construction, lodge meetings had been conducted in private homes. The "turning point" in Lodge 18's history has been linked to the decision by lodge members in 1973 to reactivate and construct the present lodge hall, a visible reminder of SPJST's presence in the community.

The SPJST Home Office is located at 520 North Main in Temple, A major goal of the SPJST Museum is to preserve the Czech cultural heritage by teaching Czech history and traditions. It also stands as a memorial to the pioneer Czech forefathers and mothers who settled Texas. Museum hours are Monday - Friday, 8 - 12 and 1 -5 and on weekends by special arrangement.

You Can Make a Difference Is was about a year ago that the Vestnik reported on Cindy Marek Kovar of Lodge 174, Rockdale winning the grand prize in the Sixth Annual Nevvman's Own and Good Housekeeping Recipe Contest. At the judging event held in New York City.

Mr. Paul Newman awarded $50,000 to Ms. Kovar to benefit her chosen charity.

In response, Cindy designated the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive to receive the gift.

As a result of her winning, Cindy served as a member of the Advisory Board for the 1997 contest. In that capacity, she helped to promote the contest throughout the state, encouraging and challenging others to participate in the 1997 contest. As a result of her efforts, she just received another $5,000 to benefit her chosen charity. And, once again, she has selected the SPJST Scholarship Fund to receive the gift.

Cindy's "good luck" formula is simple: When you see an opportunity, take the initiative and go for it. Thanks to her efforts, she made a positive difference for the SPJST Scholarship Program. In addition, she helped to raise an awareness of the SPJST and its benefits to the general public.

One person can do a lot when he or she puts his or her mind to it. The same can be said for your local lodge. To make it easier, there's even been a special day set aside for you. It's called "Make a Difference Day" and it's Saturday, October 25.

Make a Difference Day is the largest national day of helping others - a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.

And everyone can participate. Young and old, individuals and groups -- anyone who can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. USA WEEKEND, which created the observance seven years ago, will feature volunteers and their projects in articles and photos in April. Also in April, $120,000 in charitable awards are made to ten projects that capture the Make a Difference Day spirit. In addition, Paul Newman and his food company, Newman's Own, donates an additional $100,000 toward rewarding 50 honorablemention projects.

According to the rules, if your lodge or youth club wants to participate in Make a Difference Day, just make sure you participate on Saturday, October 25 in 1997.

(Make a Difference Day is always the fourth Saturday of October, so in 1998, it's October 26.) If you cannot participate on Saturday, for religious reasons, you may do your project on Sunday, October 26.

A lot of our lodges and youth clubs already volunteer on a regular basis. And

that's great. If that sounds like you, consider giving an "extra push" to your ongoing volunteer activity. And, if you don't volunteer now, it's an opportunity to get started. Official records indicate that 1,042,467 caring people reached out to neighbors in need last year on Make a Difference Day, sharing food, shelter, labor and love. Collectively, their individual efforts made a big difference.

What exactly did they do? Projects varied greatly - from cleaning and building playgrounds and conducting food drives to making sick children happy and hosting benefit dances for deserving causes.

As previously stated, 60 of the individuals and/or groups that participate in Make a Difference Day will receive a $2,000 charitable donation.

The top-10 honorees participate in an awards ceremony and, in the past, have attended White House events in Washington, D.C., during National Volunteer Week in mid-April.

To be eligible to receive an award, you must also complete an official entry form.

National Make a Difference day on October 25 coincides with the end of Czech Heritage Week, October 19 - 26.

The week, which has been observed in Texas since 1995, provides the states various Czech cultural and heritage groups with an opportunity to educate the children of Texas and the general population about the great ethnic diversity of the State. Several of our SPJST lodges have hosted or will be hosting area festivals celebrating and promoting a greater awareness of Czech heritage and culture. Watch for details of coming events in your area.

Knowledge, skill and circumstances do not control long-term success as much as who the person is, what he or she stands for and what guides the person. Readers Write Cindy Kovar Expresses Gratitude to SPJST Family Dear SPJST Family, As many of you know I was the lady that won the $50,000 prize for charity from the Paul Newman/Good Housekeeping recipe contest last year.

The prize money went into a perpetual scholarship fund and two scholarships have already been given off the interest alone. Wow, what a blessing this is for all of us. I believe when we educate our youth, it benefits everyone. I was one of those that benefited from a scholarship a few years back. I am also proud that the SPJST awards scholarships to students that may be a little bit older, but still have a need for a little help with the rising cost of education. I am happy to share with you that I graduated in August of this year from Texas A&M University. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to further my education and proud that SPJST played a part in my goal.

I have great news to share. I was just notified that I was named the Grand Prize Winner for this year's Advisor Board competition with Paul Newman/Good Housekeeping. This contest was open to all past winners and finalists from the previous six years of the recipe contest. The competition was to be the one to best promote this year's contest. I was on television, radio, in a magazine and in several newspapers. I also presented the contest rules and demonstrated my winning recipes to many groups and organizations. I kept a scrapbook of all my events complete with photos, articles and videotapes and I mailed all this in to the Newman people to be judged.

Anyway, I was the one that they felt did the best job promoting the contest for this year. As the Grand Prize winner of the Advisor Board competition, they will fly me to New York City in late October

and I will receive a check for $5,000. I will be presenting the $5,000 check to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship fund soon after I return home.

Wow, what an experience and blessing this has been for myself and for so many others. I am thankful to have had many friends and family members helping me to promote this contest. Brian Vanicek did a wonderful job helping to promote the contest. Thanks to Brian, the Vestnik readers were kept updated and encouraged to enter the contest. Lanita Anglin and many others helped by getting the contest information in the SPJST lOoth Anniversary Cookbook. There was a wonderful crew of staff members at the 100-year celebration in Belton this summer that helped me with the autographing of my recipe in the SPJST cookbook.

And there was a dear lady at the 100-year celebra tion working one of the booths that told me she was praying for me to win and she knew I would. I could wish I remember her name, but thanks to you, dear lady — you know who you are. My husband, Mike, helped me proofread all my scrapbook information and my parents helped by making me a sign and by photographing me at the events to use in the scrapbook I had to send to the contest judges. I am thankful that I am blessed with caring family and friends and an SPJST family that extends all over this great state of ours.

A big thanks to Paul Newman and all he does to help so many. He has donated over $68 million since 1982. This is 100 percent of the profit from his Newman's Own food line, and he does have some delicious products. So remember that when you are shopping, even if it's a little more. Those extra pennies add up to a lot of good.

All you great cooks, start now and let's get a winner next year from our SPJST family. I believe together we can accomplish small miracles, and if they come from the kitchen all the better.

Around the District Lodge 160, San Angelo Hosts District Four Fun Day Good fellowship and good food! That describes the successful and enjoyable Family Fun Day recently held in District Four. Hosted by Lodge 160, San Angelo, the District Four Fun Day was held Saturday, September 13 at St. Ambrose Hall in Wall, Texas.

A delicious lunch of sausage, sauerkraut, and all the trimmings was served at noon. Thanks is extended to Martha Broz for the meal preparation. Lots of yummy desserts were provided by lodge members.

Youth club members of Lodge 160 assisted with registration for this event.

Contests were held in the areas of pastry, needlework, handicraft and horseshoes. Everyone enjoyed an exciting session of bingo led by Martha Broz and Diana Pelzel.

We were pleased to have Lanita and Charles Anglin from the Home Office join us for our Fun Day. Appreciation is extended to all those who attended and especially to those who helped organize and conduct this event.

District Four and Runnels, Concho, and Tom Green Czech Heritage Society Schedules Czech Heritage Festival on October 25 A second Czech Festival will be held at Lodge 49, Rowena SPJST Hall on October 25. It is being sponsored by SPJST District Four and Runnels, Concho, and Tom Green Czech Heritage Society of the Concho Valley. Officers of the Supreme Lodge SPJST of Temple, Texas, approved and encouraged participation in promoting the event as a cultural heritage of the Czech people. Last

This year there will be two bands to entertain the guests, Joe Havlak of Olfen and Delmer Batla of Garden City, and Norman Blazek and his Czech Singers of Dallas and Ennis.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Reports on September Meeting Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, September 7, 1997, at the Youth Center at 2 p.m.

President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order followed by the pledge to the flag.

Secretary Margaret Smotek read the minutes to the July and August meetings.

Correspondence followed. Treasurer Helen Thbransky and FAC Lillie Balusek gave reports.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported that get-well cards were sent to Louis Sassin, Alfred Holy, Frank Matula

and William B. Treptow. The bingo parties at Steven Convalescent Center were enjoyed by the residents: She thanked the members who assisted. They were (in August) Lillie Balusek, Evelyn Holy, Evelyn Sklar, Helen Zabransky, Elizabeth Vahalik, and Elsie Mascheck. September helpers were Evelyn Holy, Evelyn Sklar, Viola Holly and Vicky Zak. It was decided to honor our member Emma Holly who will be 96 years in November and outlive her SPJST policy.

President Siptak will check with Stevens Convalescent Center if Saturday, November 22 at 3 p.m. is agreeable. A cake will be ordered and her family will be invited.

Youth Leader Shirley Kalmus reported on the youth activities. Each member made a card for their grandparents in honor of Grandparent's Day. They will participate in the Third Annual Hallettsville Kolache Fest Parade on Saturday, September 27. Afterwards, they will play bingo at Southern Manor.

A bowling party is planned for Saturday, October 11.

Youth club member State Queen Elizabeth Wagner told the members about the West Fest Parade and activities she attended on August 30 with State Duchess Elizabeth Vahalik and the State King J.J. Novak and State Duke Michael Kenney.

The meeting adjourned. A delicious lunch followed with President Siptak giving the meal prayer.

SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin will celebrate its 100th Anniversary on October 5, 1997. Lodge 18 is one of the original 25 charter lodges officially organized on

The celebration features a free dance from 3 to 7 p.m. with music provided by young, talented musician Chris Rybak from Hallettsville. Chris plays a variety of music including polka, cajun, and country, accompanied by his accordion, piano or trumpet.

29, Taylor Reports on September Meeting Lodge

President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order at 4 p.m. The members stood for the pledge and remained standing in silent respect for deceased members Ruth Fuchs and George D. Schultz.

Elaine Machu read the roll call of officers and the minutes. She also presented the treasurer's report.

Ronnie read correspondence from the Taylor Chamber of Commerce about having a booth at Spooktacular on Halloween night in downtown Taylor.

We voted to pass this on to the youth club. He also read the list of 50-year members. We voted to honor them at the October meeting. If you are one of this year's 50-year members, we invite you to attend this meeting.

New members were Norbert Schwertner and Phillip Brandon Lopez.

Frances Tallas gave a report on the Caldwell Kolache Fest. Dorothy Markert gave the senior citizen report. Lucille Trcka received a pin from Albin Macha for recommending members to him.

Door prizes were won by Martha Wagoner, Ruby Alford and Charles Wagner.

The next meeting will be October 12 at 4 p.m.

47, Seaton Reports on September Meeting Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The September 14 lodge meeting was

called to order at 2 p.m. by President Brother Edwin Pechal. Flag Bearers Rachel Baca and Jessica Kirby brought in the flags and lead the pledge to the U.S. flag.

A moment of silence was held in memory of Sisters Lydia Psencik Dougherty, Patsy (Pat) Pechal, and Dorothy (Dot) Hudnall. May these sisters rest in eternal peace and the deepest sympathy to the surviving families who are grieving their passing. Rest assured that we will miss them as our loyal members.

Visitors recognized were Rosa Lee Pechal and Freddie Schroeder. Make plans to come to the next meeting.

The sick list for August and September were Sisters Albina Mikeska and Anna Belle Chlapek and Brothers Clarence Sula and Emil Hejl. Hope you are feeling better at the time this makes the paper.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek, secretary, read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives with Edwin Vasicek, vice president, absent. She also read the minutes of the August 10 meeting and these were approved as read.

Correspondence included thank-you cards from the Pat Pechal family and the Lydia Dougherty family for the floral wreaths sent to their loved one's funeral services; another notice of TABC classes from September 9 through September 23; a reminder of the District Two Fall Meeting at Holland on September 21 from Sharon Holman and that our lodge members are to work the wheel for two hours.

The board minutes were read by Woodrow Marek in the absence of Board Secretary Edwin Vasicek.

Officers' reports followed. President Pechal stated that Ruth Hanusch celebrated 25 years as an SPJST employee. The harvest dance is scheduled for Saturday, October 4 so we hope you may come and hang the fruit and etc. from the wires and also we decided to have this as a combination barn dance and fruit harvest dance so farm antiques will be displayed and the decorations will be put .up on Friday, October 3 after 6:30 p.m. Your help will be appreciated. The antique tractor and farm equipment show will be in Temple that weekend also.

The First Vice President was absent and had no report.

Second Vice President Ruth Hanusch stated that Dorothy Tomasek has been an employee of SPJST for 45 years starting in Fayetteville before the move of the state headquarters to Temple. Family night was set for Friday, September 19 with "Progressive 42" dominoes.

October 13 is a tarok tournament at Lodge 92, Fort Worth. The volleyball tournament is at Bruceville-Eddy in November and we need a team of active volunteers to represent Lodge 47. The District Two Fall Meeting will have a needlecraft contest instead of a quilt contest and also a kolache contest and Christmas ornament contest for the youth. We voted to donate $100 for the drinks to help Holland Lodge 80. Jimmie Coufal won first in the tarok tournament at Lodge 29, Taylor. The fund raiser at Barclay school for the gym floor improvements with silent auction and meal on September 27 was announced.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek invited all to the dedication of the tabernacle, the granite markers and the historical marker at the Seaton Cemetery on September 20 starting at 3 p.m. and reception at the Seaton Brethren Church fellowship following.

Treasurer and Financial Secretary

Gladys Marek gave her respective reports for each office.

All chairpersons gave their monthly reports.

Youth Leader Donna Baca gave the youth club report: 16 members and three adults. The district meeting was also mentioned with the youth having a separate wheel and other games at Holland.

Volleyball players are needed to start practicing for the state meet. Their social is a trip to the movies to be announced.

Rules and regulations were to be picked up by each family.

Birthdays will be observed by Lowvica Lucko, Monroe Lucko, and Nancy Meier. Hope you had a "good one." A wedding anniversary of 36 years will be celebrated by Calvin and Dolores Skrabanek on September 23. My, but that is a long time, isn't it?

President Pechal reminded everyone of the barn and fruit harvest dance and the decorations. If you have not attended one of these, you need to come and join in the fun or just observe. It will be worthwhile.

Lodge 48, Beyersville to Host Progressive 42 Tournament SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a Progressive 42 Tournament on Saturday, November 1, 1997. The registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and we plan to begin playing at 9:15 a.m. Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes per game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially invite SPJST members but anyone is welcome. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first game. The two winners will move to the next table and split up to play with the losers who remain at that table. There will be no head table thus all winners will move.

We will use the rules of the SPJST except for some changes which apply for Progressive 42.

We ask that you pre-register by October 29, 1997, to help us in preparing the food needs. But you are still welcome to come if you are unable to preregister.

Lodge 54, West Reports on September Meeting The third quarterly meeting was called to order by Vice President Terry Sefcik on September 5. He welcomed everyone and introduced Ludmilla Dutkova, a visitor from the Czech Republic. A moment of silence was observed in memory of members who died since our last meeting, namely, Stevie Pustejovsky who died on June 16; Albin R. Kral who died on June 24; Mary E. Dolezal who died on June 28; Ella J. Marek who died on July 18; Bernard Urbanovsky who died on August 13; and Johnnie J. Uptmore who died on August 24. May they all rest in eternal peace.

Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the June 6 meeting. After one correction, these were accepted as read.

She read the following items of correspondence: a thank-you note from the family of Mary Dolezal; a card from Alden Smith regarding the Moravian Flood Relief; an invitation from Lodge 92, Fort Worth to Czech Heritage Day at National Hall; and a letter from the American Czech Culture Society regarding Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report as follows: new policies written for the second quarter by Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza for Stephanie E. Adams, Aaron M. Browning, Robert C. Browning, Cindy M. Grones, Dwayne R Grones, Brandon T. Kaluza and Naomi M. Kaluza; new policies written by Lydia Marsh of Lodge 88 for Leia N. Sefcik and Lucas Sefcik; additional policies for Daniel R. Mynar and George M. Mynar also written by Freddie Kaluza. We are very happy to have these new members in our lodge.

Since January 1, 1997, our lodge has acquired 15 new policies.

Congratulations go to Freddie Kaluza, Max Reynolds and Lydia Marsh.

Congratulations also to Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza for being the top sales representative in District Three for top applications written in July, 1997 and also being in the June-July Consistency Club.

Remember the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive which is officially underway. The goal of the 1997 Scholarship Program is to award 101 scholarships to coincide with the SPJST's 101st year of operation in 1998. A total

of 1,030 members, lodges and friends contributed a total of $14,743.38 to the 1996 Scholarship Fund Drive.

Brother Ray Matus reported that he had nothing to report on bids for the renovation of the hall.

Plans were made for the Christmas party which will be held at Lone Star Hall on December 7. Plans will be finalized in our November meeting and invitations will be mailed as usual.

Maxine Sefcik nominated Ray Matus for Fraternalist of the Year, seconded by Terry Sefcik. Congratulations, Ray! Our next meeting will be held on November 7 at 7 p.m. We will hold elections of officers for 1998 at this meeting.

FAC Maxine Sefcik awarded SPJST Everyday Hero Award Certificates and pins to the following members: Freddie Kaluza, Lil Matus, Ernest Zahirniak, Janice Kaluza, Lillie Mynar, Mona Zahirniak, Maxine Sefcik, Anne Emery, Ray Matus and Irene Plsek. This award was for the number of Fraternal Acts reported by these members.

The meeting was adjourned. Ludmilla Dutkova drew for the door prize which was won by Jan Vaculik.

66, Waco Reports on September Meeting Lodge

The regular meeting of Lodge 66 was held on September 21. The flags were presented by youth club members who also led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Motto. President John Engelke asked members to observe a moment of silence in memory of our departed members during the past month, Sister Ann Janek, Brother Alfred Pankonien, Brother Martin V. Smith, Sr. and for Brother Arthur Langlotz. Sister Darlene Engelke read a Resolution of Sympathy for each member. Also it was announced that Eugene Sulak of West, brother of Sister Polly Gaidusek, passed away on September 21. May they rest in peace.

We extend our sincere sympathy and condolences to all the families and will remember them in our prayers.

There were 43 members, 16 youth and one visitor, Dennis Ferguson, in attendance. Dennis, we hope you will join us again as visitors are always welcome.

President Engelke discussed the SPJST Centennial Membership Drive and encouraged all members to recommend prospects to our sales representatives. The deadline is December 31, 1997. Recruiters become eligible for a variety of prizes. Lodge 66 needs to sell 25 policies to be eligible for $1,000 award. He also discussed the 100 Pennies Drive and encouraged all members to support the scholarship fund.

Brother George Pauling was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors on the resignation of Charles Trickett. John Engelke will serve as co-chairman.

Get-well cards were sent to John Engelke, Blanche Lewis, and to Charles Trickett, Jr. And we were sorry to learn that Lillian Ann Parma has been a patient

at Providence Health Center for four weeks.

Sympathy cards were sent to the Janek family on the death of Sister Ann Janek; to Mr. and Mrs. Tony Glatter on the death of her mother, Mrs. Elise Pickens; to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Pustejovsky on the death of his brother, John J. Pustejovsky; to Mrs. Bernice Pankonien and family on the death of her husband, Brother Alfred R. Pankonien; and to Mrs. Opal Smith and family on the death of Martin V. Smith, Sr., husband, father and grandfather.

Youth Leader Diana Engelke reported there were 16 youth and five adults at their meeting. The youth donated bingo gifts and candy for the Moody Nursing Home and will meet on September 29 at Linden Hall to make Halloween decorations for the Home. Plans were made to attend the District Three meeting at Lodge 6 on October 26, and the youth will make Christmas ornaments. Justin Engelke provided the birthday cake and Candice McAdams provided the game.

A memorial service is being planned for the November meeting.

Sister Lucille Cervenka, Chairman of the Entertainment Committee, reported on the fund raiser. She thanked all who worked and all that made decorations.

All the food was delicious and the committee, as usual, did a great job. Plans for the Christmas party were discussed and the date was set for December 13. Other details will be announced later. Members are requested to please bring desserts for our meeting on October 19.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mary Alice Langlotz reported there were 19 adults and one youth member present at the last game night held in conjunction with the fund raiser meeting. Dorothy Veselka was the winner of the door prize.

All enjoyed working together, the games, fellowship and the delicious snacks. The next game night is October 13 so make plans to come out. Activities start at 7 p.m. at Linden Hall.

FAC Mary Alice reported the State Volleyball Tournament would be held on November 15 at Bruceville-Eddy. She needs to turn in information on players, so please call her as soon as possible at (254) 752-1788.

The Audit Committee report was given by Johnnie Gaidusek. The lodge, Linden Hall, youth club and entertainment committee books were all examined and found to be in good order.

Brother Gene Gerlich, bookkeeper for Linden Hall, presented an informative financial report. He is a dedicated worker and we commend him for a job well done. He, with his wife, Dorothy, also serves on the Entertainment Committee and does an outstanding job.

President Engelke discussed the fund raiser held on September 20. Everything turned out very good and he thanked everyone who worked to make it such a success. There was a country store, garage sale, craft sale, quilt show and sale, bake sale, games for the youth and food all day beginning at 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also the Elm Mott Volunteer Fire Department sponsored a car wash on the parking lot. Approximately 15 vendors exhibited and sold quilts, craft items, glassware, clothing and antique quilts for show. Chances were sold on a beautiful quilt donated by Sister Bonnie Pruitt and the lucky winner was Henry Glatter.

Tentative plans were discussed for other fund raisers and these details will be announced later.

Brother Mike Galler was elected as Lodge 66 Fraternalist for 1997.

Congratulations, Mike! You are greatly appreciated for all your work and dedica-

tion to Linden Hall.

September birthday celebrants were ,Dorothy Gerlich, Ruby Orsag, Gracie Soukup, Dillon Locke, and Diane Engelke. All were wished a happy birthday and were presented a beautiful birthday cake. Bennie Engelke won the door prize and Dorothy Veselka won in the 5050 club.

Following the meeting, everyone enjoyed the accordion music provided by John Sulak and Milan Dujka and also the evening meal which was delicious.

84, Dallas Reports on September Meeting Lodge

We were happy to see Tom Povaski attend our meeting. Brother Tom was the lodge's door chairman many years ago.

Our thanks to Brother Joe Ondrusek for taking time out from his busy day to check that all licensing at the bar is up to date. The members want him to know it is appreciated.

Sister Bessie Petr reported for Czech Culture that the Czech Heritage Day is October 19 at the Hall of State during the fair. She also reported beseda circles representing Lodge 84 are being formed. As youth leader, she is calling a meeting for the youth leaders as well as for the youth.

A date has not been set.

Sister Salac reported on the living memorial, and FAC Faye Rejcek made her usual good report on dues collected.

House Chairman Salac reported that a roofer is being called to check the leak that lets water seep in. Also, he changed the filters in the bar air conditioner and with Sister Evelyn's help, he put all the tables and chairs into their regular place after our Czech fest. President Yeager thanked all that helped in any way to make last Sunday a success. It was a happy group of folks who gathered for a Sunday of fraternal friendships.

Brother Raymond Rejcek was applauded for being top raffle ticket salesman at our Czech Fest. I'm not sure of the exact amount—and I'm not even sure who his competition was but Sister Anne Haluska was right up there giving him a reason to keep selling, selling, selling.

On October 13, WOW hosts the Fraternal Council at our lodge. You are invited. Sister Cheri Petr reported on band hiring and Brother Emil Petr gave his report on hall rentals.

On October 4, Jodie Macula plays for dancing. It is our Vino Brani dance.

Dog Days of Summer at Lodge 87, Temple

Chili

SPJST Lodge 87, Temple held its most recent meeting on September 9, 1997.

The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. and President Alford asked Brother Lad Zatopek to lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members. We then took a hiatus to consume a mouth-watering chili-dog supper. We resumed business at 7:45 p.m. and the minutes and the treasurer's report were approved as read, despite some confusion about our bank balances. It seemed that our financial institution mistook our account for that of the Supreme Lodge only on the withdrawal end of our transaction, leaving us with a woefully decreased closing balance of $10,847.34. We look forward to the correction of this error and were assured that it had been accomplished by the time of our meeting. Thank goodness this was the direction of the error! It would have been demoralizing to have to report a correction the opposite way!

Next on the agenda were communications received, most of which came to me during the month. The first was a request for transfer to Lodge 47, which we signed and sent to the Home Office. We wish Johnny Matl the best of luck! Next was the announcement of September 7 as Grandparent's Day — and we send belated wishes of happiness to all SPJST grandparents. I also announced the paid death claim for Steven M. Fronek, whose family was the recipient of our sympathy and condolences Last was an announcement sent to our former secretary, Jerry Valchar. We unanimously approved the exhortation by the American Czech Culture Society to our members to make every effort to attend "Heritage Day" at the State Fair of Texas on October 19, 1997.

We proceeded to consider our old business and were disappointed to learn that our Fraternal Activities Coordinator John Ferguson has decided to move to a "sort of retirement community" in Galveston and will be transferring from our lodge. We will more than "sort of miss his participation in our lodge and

wish' him the best of luck in his future home. His new community will undoubtedly benefit from his energy, sense of humor and enthusiasm for life, and we hope he will see fit to return and visit us.

Despite our farewell, we are lucky enough to have a new volunteer for the position. Thelma Groppell was unanimously approved as our new FAC, and we are indeed privileged to harness her initiative, caring nature and irrepressible good humor. We will all do our best to assist her as she assumes the mantle of responsibility in the middle of her term of office.

The next discussion addressed our lengthy consideration of window coverings. Our esteemed President donated a set of miniblinds to fit our kitchen window. He also hung them prior to our meeting, which gained many increments of additional gratitude from myself. I am particularly impressed since, in the same four or five months we have been considering them for the lodge, miniblinds were delivered to my own house and more than half remain to be hung. They look wonderful over the sink, but a majority of the members felt that the current curtains appeared more apt for the rest of the lodge. As a result, it was moved and approved that I determine the cost of material and sewing services and report back at our next meeting.

We then proceeded to our last item of business. We reviewed our ongoing efforts at youth recruitment to finalize plans for a Recruitment Day and activity.

We looked toward Dawn and Sabrina Capps as our resident youth experts (Samantha, age 2, and Charles, age 3, Kacir were judged to have too little experience to help thus far) and to approve any suggestions and judge their appeal. It was decided that we should arrange our activities around cooking experiences and that they should take place in the lodge itself. Luckily for this decision, we were able to determine that the lodge oven does indeed function well.

In the interest of increasing total participation in our lodge, we considered the suggestion of having monthly or quarterly activities around our cooking theme, rather than simply using it as a one-shot recruitment tool. As one member (I forgot to record who it was) put it, "we could be the cooking lesson lodge!" It was felt that many younger members would be interested in learning to cook "exotic" dishes and that such enticement would bring them and their families out to our lodge. We feel that once they experience our brand of fellowship, they will want to increase their participation further. It was moved and approved that we have our first seasonal cooking experience at our November 11 meeting.

We adjourned at 8:45 p.m. and planned to have coffee and doughnuts after our October 14 meeting.

88, Houston Reports on Lodge, Member Activities

Lodge

Congratulations go to Bennie Kocich on being elected this year's Fraternalist of Lodge 88! He is a member of SPJST for 56 years. He and Stacie served on the Entertainment Committee from 1968 to 1996; he was co-chairman for 20 years.

Bennie has been a member of the lodge Choral Club for 20 years and is a charter member of the Men's Club. He is a member of Houston Heritage Singers, the Red and White Chorale Group, the Czech Historical Singers; the T.P.A., American Legion, the Afton Civic Club and the Po.L.K. of A. (Polka Lovers Klub of America). He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to the end of war in 1946. We all grieved with him in his tragic loss of his beloved Stacie. He is a great fraternalist and does much for his community.

It was so sad to hear that Virginia Hale, a very dear friend and much loved sister of the Birthday Club, passed away.

With her many kind deeds she gave happiness to many, and she will be missed by her many friends. She was preceded in death by husband Leon. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to son Charles Booth and the other relatives.

The members were saddened to hear of the death of Miroslav Bily who has been an active member of our lodge and the WFLA for over 50 years. He also was an officer of Slovanic Mutual Fire Insurance for over 20 years and was instrumental in building the first Sokol building in Houston. Our sympathy goes to his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth (Alice) Bily; sons, John, Paul, Jerry, Robert, Joseph, and James and their families; and sister, Rosie Mikeska.

Member Louise Knapick who was a youth leader of our lodge in the early 1970s passed away. Our sympathy goes to daughter Jo Ann, sons Robert Knapick and Dr. Mike Knapick and their families.

Irene Lewis and granddaughter Kelly, a student of the University of Houston, enjoyed touring Europe for three weeks, visiting England, France, Belgium, Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

Jo Ann and Fred Buri and Josephine Buri made a trip to Palacios. On their return trip they stopped at Needville Rest Home where they had a delightful visit with Willie Mae Stang, Louise Kadlecek, and Mary Anders.

Pearl and Ed Gehring, who have been coming to our "big band" dances for years, drove 7,000 miles visiting Mount Rushmore, Glacier, Yellowstone, Brice and Zion National Parks, Boulder Dam, Salt Lake City and the Canadian Rockies.

We all know that our great organization is based on the principles of benevolence, humanity and brotherhood, and many of our members live by these principles. That is why I like to write about the Samaritans in our lodge, and one of these is Earline Hoffman. Her neighbor is an invalid, helpless with no relatives to look after her.

Earline does that—going to her home to give her the meals, the medicine and do all to help her. Isn't that great!

Thank you, Evelyn and Victor Janak, for that delicious sausage for our snacks after the meeting. That was an interesting history of your ancestors that Helen Hegwood gave at the meeting.

Get-well greetings go to Pat Holeman, Victor Mikeska and Mary Kosut who had eye surgery. A big "HI" to our Czech teacher, William Souchek, and his wife, Alice. We miss you.

The lodge has some good orchestras for your dancing pleasure in October: Texas Brew (country/western) on the 3rd; Manny Green (big band) on the 4th; Vrazels (polka and variety) on the 11th; Knights of Dixie (ballroom and variety) on the 18th; and Jack Melick (big band) on the 25th.

Czech Day Last, but certainly not least, please make plans to join us at the lodge on Sunday, October 26 for our annual Czech

Day celebration. Events get under way at 11 a.m. with a turkey, dressing and smoked ham dinner with all the trimmings. There will be plenty of great entertainment with the Lodge 88 Choral Group and Concert Orchestra performing at 11:30 a.m., followed by Lee Roy Matocha at 1 p.m. and Donnie Wavra at 5 p.m. Dance admission is free with meal purchase. There will also be a prize drawing, games, live auction, silent auction and much more. Join us for the fun!

92, Fort Worth Reports on Czech Heritage Day Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, We really did have a wonderful September 20 Czech Heritage Day at our Lodge 92. If you were unable to be here due to some misfortune, then you will need to wait until next year 1998. Those of you that were here will agree that it was a super day.

The doors opened at 11 a.m. and the accordion players started playing their good Czech songs. Everyone always enjoys the accordion music. People started to line up for the dinner that was catered by the famous Risky Barbecue.

Our Memory Makers singers started at 12 p.m. and they were good singing Czech songs and one American song. A large group of ladies and one man from Garland, Texas, called the Garland Dancers also performed. They were really enjoyed and performed several types of dances.

At 1 p.m. was the opening ceremony and the posting of the color guard of our flags. Mary Celeste Krivanek sang the National Anthem and then the Czech National Anthem. This was very nice and everyone enjoyed both of the National Anthems. Melissa Hubenak then sang a religious song, "Amazing Grace." She sang it beautifully. During the day, names were drawn for prizes and the person had to be present to win. The main prizes were not drawn until 10 p.m.

Then, at 2 p.m. the Vrazel Band from Cameron, Texas, started to play and that brought people out on the dance floor. It was good to see so many happy people having so much fun. There is something about polkas and waltzes that get people on their feet to dance. We had several people from out-of-town but one of our members that works and lives in Germany came to help celebrate this day with us. Sister Millie Waters had been raised in Fort Worth and as a young girl attended all things that were held at our lodge. It was good to have our Editor of the Vestnik Brother Brian Vanicek and his wife and two children here to see what a wonderful time we have in our lodge. I

Our District Three Director Brother Johnnie Krizan was also here and got to visit with several of our members of the SPJST. Brother Johnnie is a very nice young gentlemen and likes to be among people. We are proud to have him as a director of District Three.

At 6:40 p.m., the Sokol of Fort Worth put on a very nice exhibition of calisthenics as well as the very young who did their acts on their floor. This was enjoyable to see so many young children doing body build-ups. Thanks to all you Sokol members for a nice performance. The Alpine Dancers of Dallas also performed their special style of dance. This is a group of older people that can really put on a good show.

Here at Lodge 92 we try to put on a good show that at other places would charge a lot more. But for $7 a good show and two bands playing good music is a very good deal. Then comes the pretty part of the Heritage Day—the parade of Czech costumes that is so wonderful to look at. The ladies' krojs are so pretty.

Most all of them are handmade or bought in Europe. Now the men's vests are nice also and colorful. The parade had about 40 Pius so it was hard to have judges. So all that had a costume and paraded received a nice certificate and a free ticket to the dance put on by the lodge.

The Jodie Mikula band started to play at 8 p.m. and again many dancing feet got into the mood. This lasted until midnight.

Then at 10 p.m. the main drawing was held and the winners were: Mike Finka ($500) Michael Irwine ($250) Alice Barns ($100) Mike Finka ($50) Robert Becan ($50) Gayle Krenger ($50) Congratulations to all you winners.

Hope all of you will be sure to come to our dances.

Lodge 92 thanks everyone who came to our Czech Heritage Day and everyone that bought the raffle tickets. This is put on each year to help pay for the building fund and other expenses during the year.

Concrete Skills A cement mason had just gotten all the ingredients in the mixer for a batch of mortar and was leaning on his shovel, watching to make sure everything was mixing right. At that moment, a welldressed young man right out of college came up to the superintendent and said he needed a job. Not knowing what type of job the young man was looking for the superintendent asked him what he could do. Looking over at the cement mason the young man said, "Well, I can lean on a shovel better than that guy."

1th Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival will be held on Sunday, October 19 in the SPJST Lodge 172 Hall at 3609 Preston in Pasadena from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Music by Julius Tupa's Sound Connection, fast-paced polkas, the Louisiana Czech Heritage Singers from Libuse, L.A. and the Capital City Czech Choraliers of Lincoln, Nebraska; along with the Concert Band from local Czech Club, SPJST Lodge 88, authentic Czechland costumed festival goers, educational displays, silent auction, and of course, those delicious kolaches will all be among the features during this annual event.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. followed by sandwiches and authentic Czech soup. General admission is $10 which includes the lunch plate, with children ages 10 and under admitted free.

Lodge 180, Burleson met on September 2, 1997, at 6:30 p.m. with a nice crowd in attendance. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed for our departed members and friends.

We still extend our get-well wishes to our members, especially to John Hilcher, still having back problems and to Francis Simmank who will be having some teeth pulled. It hurts me to think of it and all others on the sick list.

We had the pleasure of seeing the nicest cotton crop of our lives. We were traveling south of Interstate 35 and just west of Hillsboro and we saw the cotton fields just snow white with cotton to be gathered. I was raised on a farm in the Red Ranger community and never saw cotton like that. It was a sight to see.

Once again, some of us enjoyed the day of activities at Lodge 92. Lodge 92 always has a Czech Heritage Day in September and we attend every year for a full day of entertainment and a place to meet a lot of friends and to have a good time.

Remember our country/western dances every Saturday night. Doors open

at 7:45 p.m. with dancing until 12:30 a.m.

This is a nice place to meet friends.

8/ViSTNIK—Wednesday, October 1, 1997 members hosted their Second Annual Golf Tournament to benefit the Normangee Emergency Medical Technicians.

This was a cooperative effort between Lodge 189 and the EMTs of Normangee, Texas, a good example of the non-traditional partnerships.

The Hilltop Lakes Country Club and Golf Course is fairly easy to locate off Highway 79. The setting is beautiful with tall trees, fragrant shrubbery, abundant wildlife, beautiful greens and sandy paths; it almost seems like a little piece of Florida, right smack in Central Texas.

The resort also offefs a family environment with paddle boats, swimming, horseback riding, and other family-type activities including a clubhouse.

Sewing Circle Reports on September Meeting

The Circle met on September 11, 1997. Thirty-four members were present.

Our guests were Willie Skrivanek, Jerry Kohn, Charles Kosarek, Wesley Tupy, Julius Podhrasky, Joe Vlk and Jerry Koubek.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Assistant Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read and took the minutes.

Treasurer Lillie Kosarek gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as read. It was good to have our vice president Emilie Harrison back. Emilie recuperated well after shoulder surgery.

A thank-you note was read from Emil (E.J.) Janousek for the sympathy card he received from the Circle. Sister Bertha Podhrasky thanked the Circle for the getwell card and money gift sent to her mother, Vojteska Janicek. Sister Emilie Harrison thanked the Circle for the getwell card and money gift. Sister Alene Skrivanek thanked the Circle for the getwell card. Alene had another knee replacement. She attended the meeting and is doing real good.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to September birthday celebrants. Sister Albie Nesuda will celebrate her 90th birthday on September 27. Happy belated birthday, Albie.

A quilt was quilted for Sister Hattie Moucka. Sister Hattie Moucka gave a donation to the Circle in memory of Marie Janousek.

Sister Patricia Fowler gave us a good report on the progress of Sister Mildred Trojacek, her mother. Patricia told us that Mildred misses the Circle meetings. She may just surprise us one of these days.

We sure hope so.

Sister Bertha Podhrasky gave us details about the Czech Heritage Day to be held at the Hall of State at the State Fair on October 19. If anyone has an original Czech costume (kroj) and would like to be in the Parade of Costumes and has not contacted anyone, call Anne Zvolanek at (214) 821-1808 or Bertha Podhrasky at (214) 374-1537. Call as soon as possible.

Sister Betty Steagall furnished the door prize. Sister Doris Foit was the lucky winner.

Sister Anne and Bohumil Zvolanek donated a framed portrait of Tomas G. Masaryk, the first president of the new country, Czechoslovakia, to the Ennis Sokol Museum.

Congratulations!

In celebrating Big D Chapter's 50th Anniversary, members recognized and thanked Sister Liddie Pavelka for 40 years of membership. Liddie was presented a beautiful corsage and a plaque by the Professional Secretaries International.

On September 7, a cute black and white playful puppy (male), looked like a German Shepherd, came to my house. If I did not already have a dog, I would have kept him. I kept him for a week, hoping that someone would claim him.

He was destructive, as puppies usually are. I just had my VCR repaired and he pulled the cord and the VCR fell to the floor. It was damaged and cannot be repaired. It was too hot for him to stay outdoors, so you know where he stayed — yes, in the cool dog room. I took him to the S.P.C.A.—another expense. I sure hated to do that but I hope someone will

adopt him.

Heritage Society Meets November 8

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold the Fall State Meeting on November 8, 1997, in Hillje, Texas. The Wharton County Chapter will host the meeting at St. Andrew Parish Hall.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m.

Entertainment will be provided by the Home Boys. Lunch will be served at 11 a.m. The business meeting will begin at 1 p.m. The Czech Heritage Society Annual Czech Heritage Award and the Blaha-Hejl Memorial Awards will be presented at this meeting.

State Comptroller John . Sharp will speak at noon. Alden Smith, Hillsboro history professor, will share information regarding the summer flood in the Czech Republic.

County Czech Heritage Day Sunday, October 26

Bexar County Czech Heritage Day is Sunday, October 26, 1997, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.M. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 5721 Rigsby in San Antonio, Texas. The Heritage Day will feature Chris Rybak, accordionist and pianist play-

ing polka, country and cajun music.

Czech meal tickets will be available for,$5 for adults and $3 for children, ages 10 and under. The meal will consist of sausage, pork, sauerkraut, potatoes, etc.

Kolaches and homemade noodle soup will be available all day.

Brethren Church Christian Sisters Annual Quilt Show This Saturday Temple

The Christian Sisters of the Temple Brethren Church will host their annual quilt show on Saturday, October 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in their fellowship hall of the church at 2202 Bird Creek Drive in Temple, Texas, behind Luby's and KMart.

Admission will be a voluntary donation of canned goods to be distributed to the needy during the upcoming holidays.

Door prizes will be given away throughout the show.

A queen-size quilt will be given away at the end of the show. Love donations will be available at the show or from any member of the Christian Sisters. The quilt was pieced by Vallie Tupy and quilted by the quilting ladies.

As well as show quilts, there will be quilts for sale. There will also be a variety of baked goods, canned goods and crafts.

A silent auction will also be held to include a yo-yo coverlet, made with the youngest hands of seven-year-old Weston Harmon and 12-year-old Chrystal Conners to the young-at-heart like Vlasta Chiles and Libbie Chupik and many in between.

Sausage wraps and potato soup will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Proceeds from the show are used for Christian Sister Projects and Church needs.

Orsak Family Reunion In December of 1869, Joseph Orsak with his wife, Apolona, and daughter, Anna, age 2, left Karlovice, Moravia, for Galveston, Texas, to settle in Fayetteville, Texas. The descendants of this Czech family will gather in El Campo at the American Legion Auxiliary Hall on Highway 71 South at 10 a.m. to celebrate the 47th annual reunion on October 5, 1997.

Please bring a dessert or pastry dish, Coffee, tea and tableware will be furnished. Also, we would appreciate any donations of home-canned foods, doilies, scarves, etc., to be raffled and auctioned.

Vitek - Pechal Family Reunion

Gregor Johann Mendel From the book Czechoslovakian Culture, compiled by Pat Martin Czechoslovaks claim Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884), the father of the science of genetics. He was born in Silesia, the son of poor peasants. He spent most of his life in Bruno, Moravia.

As a boy, Mendel watched with interest as his father worked on fruit trees in his orchard. In the monastery where he became a priest, Mendel would conduct breeding experiments with garden peas, crossing varieties in a pioneering study of plant hybridization and the elements of heredity that are now known as genes. In

1866 the Natural Science Society, of which he was a founder, published his paper Experiments with Plant Hybrids, the importance of which was not recognized until 1900 when it came to the attention of other European scientists researching genetics.

Although Mendel's research was restrictive due to his administrative duties as abbot, he always believed in the importance of his work. He was also convinced that eventually his studies would be continued.

Elizabeth Ann Vahalik recently performed in the Debbie Bennett Green School of Dancing Recital at the Victoria College Auditorium. The theme was "Happily Ever After in Dance Land."

She danced tap, ballet and jazz routines. She received a trophy for being a five-year student.

Elizabeth is an eight-year-old third grade student at Our Lady of Victory School in Victoria. She is a member of Lodge 4, Hallettsville and serves the youth club as flag bearer and is the State SPJST Duchess. Her parents are Annie and Philip Vahalik.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Reports on Activities Dear Readers, After a busy July and August, in which we had our annual picnic, 100th Anniversary, and West Fest, we will now be holding our "thank you" party for all the workers that have helped in any way this year. The party will be October 19. Then on October 26, we are hosting the District Three Fall Meeting.

On Sunday, October 5, we are going to Six Flags.

I took part in the West Fest parade and I also danced both days in Jennifer's Dance Academy presentations.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Participates in West Fest Dear Readers, On August 30, we rode on the SPJST Lodge 6 Youth Club float in the West Fest Parade. Our float was decorated with the camp tee-shirt theme "The Shining Star of Texas." The parade was very long and so many people lined the streets.

Dear Readers, Lodge 9 in Snook had a Grandparent's Lodge Day program on Sunday, September 7 at the Snook Brethren Church. Jason and I read poems on our special Grandma and Grandpa. We all sang Czech songs, too.

It was really nice. After the program all the members took pictures with their `Dear District Two, grandparents.

Thank you so much for the great Six Fraternally, Flags trip!, I had a blast! I loved the Kimberly Gaas roller coasters—especially the one in the (9/15/97) dark, Runaway Mountain. I also liked —SPJSTthe water rides where you get soaked.

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Reports on Summer Trip This summer the SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club took a trip to the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation in Liviningston, Texas. The youth enjoyed three different tours offered on the reservation, a visit on Indian Village and an Indian dance. Enclosed is a picture of the Indian Dancers along with some of the audience. Kyle Vanecek was the only brave man in our group to dance with the Indians. (He is the young gentleman in the foreground of the picture.)

The next day the youth went on an antique locomotive train ride between Palestine and Rusk.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club Reports on Summer • • Activities Dear Vestnik Readers, This past summer we were all very busy with Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club.

We had our District Six Summer Camp at Camp Lone Star in June. Then, we attended the 100th Anniversary Celebration in Belton on July 12 and performed our first place state winning bese-

da dance. On July 20 was our District Six YAD in Taiton. Then we went to Moody Gardens in Galveston for our District Six tour on July 27. Then, State YAD was August 2 and 3. We won first place with our patriotic medley dance routine. On August 10, we had our annual Taiton youth club outing. We had a swimming outing. It was a lot of fun!

September Meeting The September 8, 1997, meeting of Lodge 30 Youth Club was called to order at 7 p.m. by Vice President Rachel Dluhos. Jarret Dluhos led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. There were 24 members and 13 adults. Guests introduced were Hector Franco and Wesley Castro.

The minutes were read and approved.

Fund raising plans for this month are selling cookbooks.

The charity project for this month will be non-perishable items for Taiton Fall Festival.

Youth members enjoyed having cokes, chips and cookies for refreshments.

The after-meeting activities were cleaning the hall and decorating tin cans for charity.

The guests introduced were Catharine, Hope and Asheil.

Our youth leader reported that the Peanut Festival is October 11 and 12. All members are to show up at, the hall on October 5 and help make peanut brittle.

We are going to have a short meeting and discuss our float for the parade.

We played a game of roller hockey and roller bladed after the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 2:20 p.m.

The September 14 meeting of Lodge 177 Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Kristen Bartek. Jordan Lyon led the Pledge of Allegiance. The register was read. There were 10 members and four adults_present.

We also discussed the District Two Fall Meeting at Holland. We will have a booth at the Bartlett Friendship Fest on September 27 for a fund raiser. Also discussed was the membership drive to be held at the October meeting.

SPJST Holiday Ornament Contest Guidelines All ornaments must be homemade—no store-bought, finished ornaments will be allowed. Ornaments must be youth club member's own creation. No pre-assembled kits.

Styrofoam balls are allowed.

Size of Ornament • Styrofoam ball size: No larger than 6 inches.

• Overall size for ornament: No larger than 6 inches.

Judging Criteria • Creative ability and skill 45 points • Appearance and Design 35 points • Neatness 20 points Materials • May use any, materia appropriate for a Christmas ornament.

Who May Enter • Each Youth Club member may enter one ornament.

Ornaments will be judged at the District Fall. Meeting. The DYC will be in charge of securing judges and ribbons. There will be one winner in each category: ages 6 to 8, ages 9 to 11, ages 12 to 14, and ages 15 to high school senior.

The four winning ornaments from each District will be sent to the Home Office where it will be placed on the SPJST Youth Christmas Tree in the Museum.

Winners at the state level will be recognized with a certificate and have their ornament on the State Youth Christmas Tree. A picture of the Christmas 'Free will be on the front page of the Vesinik with the names of the winners.

A Visit to Kmoch's Kolin

returned to Prague. He had to go to a clinic, where he would be all day, so I had the day to myself. I called some people, including Dr. Lubomir Doruzka, the author of the Vacek biography and was invited to visit him at 3 that afternoon. I went to the Post Office at Jindriska and addressed and sent a whole lot of post cards. From there I returned to The Prague Post, where I was finally allowed to talk to the person in charge of the entertainment column, Mimi Rogers, who was new at the job. I had never read anything about polka music in The Prague Post, and my fellow Americans and others who read English had never found it either, so I gently let Ms. Rogers know of our disappointment at not finding any description of polka music, lidovka, or the like in the Post. I requested that the Post please add information about polka music to its entertainment column—where and when it is playing. She said she would "look into it." I have not seen any Prague Post printed since that date (June 18), so those of you that have read copies of The Prague Post printed since then, write to Mimi Rogers, if you have not seen anything about polka music.

From the Post, I followed Dr. Doruzka's instructions on how to get to his house. I did find his house, and we had a nice long chat about polka music and the people and organizations connected therewith. After about a little over an hour I left Dr. Doruzka's and returned to Kolin.

On Thursday, June 19, Karel Vacek, Jr. came to pick me up at the Kubicek's

his car, a very new Mazda. We went t. different route to Prague, generally aiming to land in the southeast part of the city, where Mr. Vacek lives. I saw the famous piano on which Karel Vacek, Sr. composed the famous tango "Cikanka" (generally called "Play to Me, Gypsy" in English), his first big hit in 1931. Mr. Vacek also had an old console radiophonograph on which he played a 78 record. He chose to give me several items, some of which are intended for use in the English translation of his father's biography. His wife served dinner, and then we chatted a little longer. Early in the afternoon Mr. Vacek decided to take me back to Kubiceks.

The following weekend the Kubiceks went to their cottage in Sany a small village somewhat north of Kolin. While staying at that cottage, we went on a couple of outings. On Saturday, we went to the Smetany Museum, but it was closed.

We went on to Milovice, where the Soviets had concentrated their troops after the 1968 invasion. The Soviet troops are long gone, and the barracks they left behind are in sad shape. But the Czechs have their troops there now also, and one of my friends whom I had met in 1994 on the Hromadka Band trip, Karel Chutny, was stationed there. When we got there Vaclav inquired about him, and he came out of the compound riding a bicycle. It was a great reunion for us. We took pictures of him. But he had to return to duty. He wanted us to visit him at his home in Valdice the next day, so we made plans for that.

From Milovice we went to a couple of outdoor exhibitions, one of which had a wonderful program of the type of Czech

music one does not ordinarily hear. A group from Roznov in Moravia was there and really had a good show.

That night at the Kubiceks we had the equivalent of a wiener roast in their outdoor oven.

The next day we went through Novy Bydzov, where both parents of Karel Vacek, Sr. originally came from. From there we went on to Vysoke Veseli, where young Karel, Sr. lived with his parents before going into the military. The house was currently owned by someone who had a reputation of not being so nice. We went across the street and met the Vaceks' former neighbors, the Novaks.

The Novaks invited us in, gave us coffee, and showed us a brand new videotape about the life of Karel, Sr. That afternoon we went to visit Karel Chutny's family in Valdice. His mother fixed us a fine, "typical Czech" dinner, after which I entertained them on one of the borrowed accordions. After that, Karel led us on a hike through "Cesky raj" again. Sunday night we returned to the cottage and thence to Kolin.

The next Monday, June 23, I took the bus from Kolin to Liberec, where I sought and found the birthplace of Karel Vacek, Sr. Just this year they had put a new bust of him in the Liberec City Hall, which I also saw and photographed.

Someone had told me of a cable car at Liberec, but I forgot about that and simply took the bus back to Kolin.

On Tuesday, I went to Votice and visited my host of 1991, Dr. Vladimir Kalal.

We visited with his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren and spent the night at Votice. The next day we went down to the Ceske Budejovice area, where I pur-

sued more of my curiosity about Vladimir Hala. I actually met two people who had sung with the chorus which Hala's band had accompanied. There was a woman and a man. Both had been paid in the form of copies of the records the band and chorus had made. The woman had given her copies to a relative, while the man, Jan Maxa, kept his. They are his life's treasure, and he will not part with them. They appeared to be in mint condition to me.

Dr. Kalal and I went on to Doudelby but did not find out a whole lot there.

That afternoon we visited the daughter of the original director of the band that Vladirmir Hala took over, Marie Placerova, daughter of Vaclav Mugrauer.

She told us of Karel Hala, son of Vladimir Hala. She also fed us, gave us coffee, and gave me two tapes, one of Budvarka, and the other of another local group. We ended up spending the night at Kalal's daughter's in Teplysovice. On Thursday I returned to Kolin.

On Friday, Vaclav and I took off for Roznov in Moravia to see the outdoor museum that fellow Texan, Victor Peter, had helped the locals to set up. It was really something. I wish I had a television camera to have taken pictures of the active mills in "Mill Valley." From Roznov we went on to Straznice, where Vaclav had made arrangements for accommodations. The "accommodations" turned out to be one of those "weekend houses" that has no running or hot water—only electricity! It was within walking distance of the festival, so we did get to go there and enjoy two Moravian Brass bands that night.

The festival had groups from all over the world. There were two American groups there, the Texans of Czech Ancestry, and a square-dance group from California. Jim Bezdek of Denton played his accordion there. A parade was held with a few of the foreign groups leading it off. That night we heard some more brass bands. But even more important, I found fellow Texan Richard Pavlasek there! He enjoyed the brass bands with us.

On Sunday, we enjoyed some of the variety of the festival and then gave Richard Pavlasek a ride back to Kolin. He was shown the square and was invited to the Kubiceks' home for a snack. After that, we took him to the station, where he got a train back to Prague.

On Monday, I prepared my baggage for mailing and after a few hassles finally shipped it off. On Tuesday, July 1, I went to Prague by myself for the last time to find the Vejvoda Museum in Zbraslav, a suburb of Prague. To make a long story short, I shall just say I had a frustrating train ride, which I could have avoided, if I had listened to instructions. But I eventually did find the Vejvoda Restaurant and Museum in Zbraslav, the very building in which "Skoda lasky" (Beer Barrel Polka) was written! The name of it is now "Restaurace `Skoda lasky,'" owned by Jiri Vejvoda, one of the sons of Jaromir Vejvoda, the composer of "Beer Barrel." In one room, there are photographs and documents on the wall from the life of Jaromir Vejvoda. The tourist will be treated with courtesy and respect there.

That about sums up my latest trip to the Czech Republic. I hope to go again next year for the 150th anniversary of the birth of Frantisek Kmoch, along with other anniversaries and celebrations.
