-Preamble to the U.S. Constitution This week's Vestnik is dated September 17. It was on that day, 210 years ago, that delegates attending the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia adopted the U.S. Constitution. To commemorate the occasion, we observe Citizenship Day. It's not a widely publicized event.

No fireworks. No three-day weekends.

No big sales. Just a time to mark the enactment of a document that defines our nation's democratic form of government and the rights of its citizens.

One of the world's most praised documents, the Constitution and its subsequent amendments, established a strong national government. At the same time, it was designed to strike a balance between order and freedom. Of the 170 countries that exist today, more than 160 have written charters modeled directly or indirectly on the U.S. version. These rights have fired the imaginations of individuals the world over. For more than two centuries, the U.S. Constitution remains the standard against which people of all sorts measure their governments.

Within the SPJST, our By-Laws define our organizational structure, business operations and the relationships between various parts of the society.

Historically, SPJST members have taken

great pride in their democratic form of government - voting on organizational policies and voting for candidates. In the coming months, they will be exercising these rights in annual meetings all across the state. Celebrate the SPJST's democratic tradition and participate in your annual lodge meeting. Be an active player in making a positive difference in your local lodge.

For Your Protection In addition to providing its members with a forum for for community support, the SPJST offers its members a wide range of life insurance and annuity products.

Of the two basic types of life insurance certificates offered, term insurance premiums are the lowest because term insurance offers death protection only and is in effect for a limited period. For example, a member with a ten-year term certificate has protection for that ten-year period - not beyond. If the certificate is renewable, it may be extended for another period at a premium based on the new age. Two popular term plans offered by SPJST are its 10-year and 20-year term certificates. Likely purchasers include young couples looking to purchase a high amount of protection at a low premium.

Another form of term insurance offered by the Society is the "SPJST Protector Plan" which is a joint decreasing-term certificate. The plan insures both the husband and wife in one contract and is usually tailored to mortgage cancellation. The plan pays the proceeds at the time the first insured dies.

Readers Write Vestnik Article Prompts Transatlantic Visit Dear Editor, Just returned from a fabulous trip to Europe. My first! And a memorable one it will be!

Plans for the trip actually began in December of 1996 when I responded to a request from a Moravian boy which was published in the Vestnik. The youth, 17 years of age at the time, wanted to visit America and was seeking an invitation.

Purposely, I waited for a week or so allowing time for people who have children in that age group to invite him.

However, my invitation was the first he received and he very happily accepted.

His brother also desired to visit America, so I invited both young men. Lumir Kresta, who turned 18 in June, and his 20-year-old brother, Jerry, arrived at the airport in Austin on July 20. We had been corresponding and had exchanged photos so we recognized each other.

The young men were my house guests for 10 days during which time I showed them interesting sites in and around Austin. Following the Austin visit, the "boys" (as I called them) went to Houston where they were guests of a family who took them to the space center, a baseball game, etc. From Houston, they went to Corpus Christi for a visit with a family there.

While they were in Austin as my guests, we attended a barbecue given in their honor in San Marcos, a hamburger cookout in Duncanville, and toured the Southfork Ranch near Plano. We had a barrel of fun at U.R. Cooks in Austin but the guys really liked Fuddrucker's hamburgers the best.

Following their visit in Corpus, the boys met me in Houston at the airport on August 10, and I accompanied them via KLM airlines to Amsterdam and on to Prague, Czech Republic. We spent three days and two nights in Prague where their father had met us at the airport. Prague most definitely is the place to vacation now days. It has personality, a charm of its own and is filled with interesting history. The castles, cathedrals, Charles Bridge, etc. were all so invigorating. I rode my first underground subway. We also visited the "U Zlateho Tygra" (The Golden Tiger) pub where President Bill Clinton and Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel visited in 1994. Their picture was posted on the wall of the pub.

Now, I'm not bragging (maybe just a little), but we somehow managed to be seated around the same table that the presidents were seated around and the pub was filled to its seating capacity.

From Prague, we went by auto into Moravia, a four- or five-hour trip to the village of Mnisi where the Kresta family resides. We went to so many interesting places there in Moravia, but the one that meant the most to me was the village of Lutonia where my grandmother from my mother's side of the family was born. It is a beautiful, immaculate, and charming village.

While in Moravia, I was honored at an evening party. They even had a keg of Radegast Czech beer. Fun, fun, fun!

Also, there were dinner parties for me.

The food was so good and I love to eat.

The flight via KLM from Prague to Amsterdam was enjoyable as the gentlemen seated next to me was a native of Moravia and now is a college professor in Columbus, Ohio. We had a nice conversation.

When the plane reached Amsterdam, the fog there was so thick and the visibility so bad that the captain informed us that we would have to land elsewhere, probably Brussels, Belgium or Holland. Don't know who made the decision, but we landed in Holland and sat there in the airplane three hours. Afterwards, we returned to Amsterdam. Of course, everyone missed their connecting flights so KLM had to assign us to various hotels for the night. I didn't mind this at all since KLM was footing the hotel bill and being that I didn't have anything better to do anyhow (so good to be retired!). I stayed in the Golden Tulip Hotel. The only bad thing about all of this was waiting in long lines all afternoon getting rescheduled for another flight the next day. One representative told me that the direct flight from Amsterdam to Houston was booked and that I would need to go to New York, change terminals there, and would arrive in Houston about three hours or more later than the direct flight.

If that was what it took, that was fine with me. However, after thinking more about having to go to another terminal in New York, I decided to talked to another representative. This time I was in luck. The representative said I could go on the direct flight to Houston in the Business Class instead of the tourist class. Great! I sat in the cabin of the plane (something like a second floor) where each seat had its own television and the meals were so good. What a way to fly! On my next long trip, I hope to fly KLM again and will probably pay more just to fly business class.

It also stands as a memorial to the pioneer Czech forefathers and mothers who settled Texas. Museum hours are Monday - Friday, 8 - 12 and 1 - 5 and on weekends by special arrangement.

I have barely returned from my trip and already I am involved in another home improvement project. Haven't had time to read the newspaper. Oh well, that's the life of a retiree.

Although I don't have a family of my own, I do have several families. There has always been the church family, the office family, the retirees family, the Q Sports Club family and now I have a Moravian family. Also, I have Dale's family. They are like my children and I love them dearly.

Around the District Lodge 80, Holland Hosts District Two Fall Meeting September 21 Dear District Two Members, This is a reminder that the District Two Fall Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 21, 1997, at Holland SPJST Lodge 80 in Holland, Texas.

The day will begin with registration starting at 1 p.m. Registration for the youth club Christmas ornaments, kolace, horseshoes, and needlecraft contests will start at 1 p.m. The adult meeting will start at 2 p.m. The games will begin shortly following the business meeting and last until 4:30 p.m. Door prizes and announcements of contest winners will be at 4:30 p.m. along with raffle winners and silent auction winners. The evening meal will be served at 5 p.m. and will be $2 per person.

Like last year, 20 free tickets for games will be given to each person who registers by 2 p.m. Those who register after this time will not receive free tickets. Extra tickets will be available at the cost of five for $1.

Activities planned will be three country stores, one youth country store, and games for the youth.

Contests will be kolache, needlecraft, horseshoe and Christmas ornament for youth. Participants in the kolache and needlecraft contests must be 18 years of age or older. For the Christmas ornament contest, young people are encouraged to see their lodge youth leader for details.

The District Two Youth Club will have a silent auction again this year to raise funds. They are accepting items ($10 value) from those individuals or lodges that wish to donate. Contact Patsy Koslovsky if you would like to donate.

We are asking that each family bring canned goods or items appropriate for the youth country store and a cake for the country stores. If everyone brings two to three items per person in their family, we will have more items in the country stores. You need not bring anything for the evening meal.

SPJST Kolache Contest Guidelines: 1. The SPJST Koloone Baking Contest is open to all SR.IST members of nonprofessional status.

Nonprofessionals are considered those who do not sell kolaches through a bakery or other establishment.

2. Kolaches must be made Pram scratch, using yeast dough 3. Entries must consist of six average-sized kolaches of the same filling on a disposable tray or plate.

4, Kolache entries must be made by one person, no team entries, 5. All kolauhes may be sold after the event and proceeds will be donated to the District Fund.

6 Winner must be present at the announcement of awards, 7. The First Place Winner may compete the following year.

Only one entry per person per I contest.

District Four and Runnels, Concho, and Tom Green Czech Heritage Society Schedules Czech Heritage Festival on October 15 A second Czech Festival will be held at Lodge 49, Rowena SPJST Hall on October 25. It is being sponsored by SPJST District Four and Runnels, Concho, and Tom Green Czech Heritage Society of, the Concho Valley. Officers of the Supreme Lodge SPJST of Temple, Texas, approved and encouraged participation in promoting the event as a cultural heritage of the Czech people. Last

year's Czech Fest was considered successful by everyone who attended.

This year there will be two bands to entertain the guests, Joe Havlak of Olfen and Delmer Batla of Garden City, and Norman Blazek and his Czech Singers of Dallas and Ennis.

Lod Letters Section odge 4, Tyclone Reports on September Meeting Dear Readers, The meeting was called to order by President Brian Vanicek. He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for our deceased members, Adolph Stepan and Joe Lee Martinec, relatives to a lot of our active members.

Our sympathy goes out to their families.

Our get-well wishes go out to Margaret Mikeska who had surgery and to Frances Cabla who is sick.

Secretary Rhonda Greger read the minutes and they were approved as read.

Vice President and FAC Richard Greger informed us on all activities that are coming up in District Two. He also told us to start thinking of who we would like to nominate for Fraternalist of the Year.

Reports were given by Bar Chairperson David Nauert; this will be his last report for now our new bar chairman is Terry Coots. Treasurer Penny Coots gave us a report.

Youth Leader Rosamond Baker reported to us about all their activities. They are making plans for a Halloween Haunted House on November 1, 1997.

Also, it will be a game night. More details later. At their September meeting, they honored grandparents which was held Sunday, September 14, 1997.

The board report was given by LaVerne Cabia. All what the board proposed was taken care of. Our floor is redone, the trash bin was repaired, and the compressor on one of our air conditioners was replaced.

Activities we have scheduled which you all should put on your calendars are the cook-off on November 7 and 8. The activities will start with a chili meal Friday night starting at 5 p.m. People will be setting up their booths and also we will have a garage sale on Saturday, the 8th and there will be breakfast and a noon meal served. Come out and eat with us and shop at the garage sale. To reserve a space for the garage sale, call Brian Vanicek at (254) 985-0007, Pat Sebek at (254) 778-1582, or LaVerne Cabla at (254) 985-2354. The cost of the space will be $10. For cooking information, contact Harold Vanicek at (254) 583-2335. We are asking our members to bring some desserts for these meals.

79, Corpus Christi Reports on Anniversary Ceiebratio LodGe

The 100th year celebration of the SPJST and Majek's Orchestra on Sunday, August 31 was a tremendous success.

There were more than 550 people in attendance and all seemed to be having a great time. The music by Majek's sounded great! There were people from all over the state and I know there was one visitor from Minnesota who came especially for the occasion and enjoyed dancing nearly every set. All the publicity paid off, judging by the large number of people who said they wanted to come because this was a once-in-a-lifetime event. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this a success.

Lodge Meeting is September 21 The next meeting for Lodge 79, Corpus Christi will be on Sunday, September 21 at 2 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge 79 Sokol Hall. After the meeting the usual social will follow, for which all members are asked to bring some goodies to share.

80, Holland Reports on September Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, President Harold Rohde called the monthly meeting to order at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 1997. The usual opening formalities were observed.

Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham reported all officers were present except for Frank Pajestka, Jr. and then he read the minutes of the previous meeting and all was approved as read. Brother Latham gave all the committee reports and they are all doing quite well. Brother G.L. (Pee Wee) Brisbin thanked the kitchen workers for a job well done this past month.

The family of Sue Mewhinney sent a thank-you note for the donation in memory of their mother and wife.

New members accepted into the lodge were Trenton Glaser, Wesley Kordes, Minnie Poole, Bretta Winters, R. Casey Winters, and Rudy Ruiz. Welcome to Lodge 80!

Lodge 80 will be hosting the District Two Fall Meeting on Sunday, September

21, 1997. We hope to see a lot of members and lodges represented throughout the district in attendance. Remember, this is the short meeting with contests and games going on throughout the afternoon.

Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m. with all those registering by 2 p.m. to receive 20 free game tickets. An evening meal with all the trimmings will be available for $2.

Lodge members, please remember to bring a sweet for the evening meal. We also need to remember to be at our appointed work stations throughout the day.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the home office staff and officers for the cards and visits during my stay in the hospital. To the members of Lodge 80, thank you for all the cards, flowers, visits, phone calls, goodie baskets, cakes, cookies, and the wonderful roast with all the trimmings and especially for the prayers for my recovery. Member William E. "Bill" Crozier, who retired as president of Liberty Saving Association and was a member of many organizations, passed away. Our sympathy goes to wife Hazel B. Crozier and the other relatives.

Czech Heritage Day at Lodge 92, Fort Worth is Saturday, September 20, 1997, at National Hall, located at 3316 Roberts Cutoff Road in Fort Worth.

Activities begin at 11 a.m. with accordionists. The Memory Makers Czech Choir will perform at 12 noon, followed by the German Dancers of Garland at 12:30 p.m. The opening ceremony is at 1:10 p.m. The Vrazels of Cameron will play music from 2 to 6 p.m. The Parade of Czech Costumes is at 6:10 p.m. The exhibition by Sokol Fort Worth is at 6:40 p.m. followed by the Alpine Dancers of Dallas at 7:20 p.m. The Jodie Mikula Orchestra of Ennis will play music from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Several prizes will be given in the building fund raffle. Hubenak's Hamburgers will be served. The Ladies Czech Circle will sponsor the pastry sales booth.

Dinner will be served from noon until 6 p.m. The cost is $6.50 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

Admission for all the day's activities is $7 and $3 for persons under the age of 17.

92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle Reports on September Meeting Lodge

The Ladies Circle of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, September 9, 1997, at the lodge hall with 46 members, seven men, and one guest present. President Florence Greer opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and thanked Clara Cohen for the purple blooming flowers that graced the officers' table.

Our new member, Geraldine (call her "Geri") Hill was welcomed. Lauren Anderson Durham, four-year-old granddaughter of Martha Durham, was our guest today.

The minutes of the August 12, 1997, meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer Evelyn Spacek reported the balances in our treasury and then said getwell wishes had been sent to Mary Ann Kozel, Elizabeth Gregory, and Eleanor Svacek along with a thank-you card to Clara Cohen and Marsha Tweek for their recent donation. A card would be sent to Ann Schneider who was absent today, recovering from out-patient tests. Getwell quick, members!

Details for the Pastry Booth on Czech Heritage Day on Saturday, September 20 were given by President Greer. All pastry is to be at the lodge hall by 10 a.m. Help from all members will be appreciated during the day and night. Prices were announced, all being the same as reported last month with the exception that strudel will sell for 50 cents a slice rather than 75 cents. Prices are as follows: cakes, pies, kolaches, strudel — 50 cents each; cookies — 10 cents or three for 25 cents; brownies, cupcakes and muffins — 25 cents. No whole strudels are to be sold to allow more to have a taste of good Czech pastry.

Peanut brittle, sold by Clara Cohen in a separate booth, will be priced by the quart jar. A separate, larger jar of peanut brittle will be raffled with $1 chances.

Clara will also have pickled beets to sell; all items are to be sold and proceeds are to be donated to the Ladies Circle. Please patronize the pastry booth and peanut brittle booth as proceeds go to our Ladies Circle and all members are then treated to a luncheon at a local restaurant in November and a gift is also made to our local lodge for use of the great facilities provided to the Ladies Circle each month.

Motion made by Betty Lindsay, seconded by Louise Oujesky, was approved that plastic silverware will be bought to be used for our future meetings. A donation by Billie Jean Lewallen and Betty Lindsay was given in lieu of their bringing pastry for the pastry booth on Czech Heritage Day. Manager Joyce Tesar reported' on coming events at the hall. Saturday, September 20, Czech Heritage Day begins at noon until 11 p.m. Admission is $7 per person to cover both afternoon and night dances (no reservations are taken on this day); Riscky's tarbecue dinners will be sold from noon to 6 p.m. for $6.50 per plate; after 6 p.m.

Hubenak's hamburgers and klobase sandwiches will be sold by the youth club.

Many dance groups will perform during the day along with accordion players, the Memory Makers Choral group, a parade of Czech costumes and an exhibition by Sokol gymnasts. A great day is planned for all, so plan to be here.

The next country/western dance is on October 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. Admission is $5 each.

154, Fort Worth Remembers Stephanie Milan Lodge

Stephanie Mattise Milan, the infant daughter of Rome and Mila Milan left us on August 12, 1997. She is the baby sister of Paris Milan and the granddaughter of Henrietta and Jerry Milan, all of Fort

„Ng Worth. Her maternal grandparents are Jan an Vlasta Waldauf of Toronto, Canada.

Great-grandparents are Sophie and Henry Banfi of Chicago, Illinois. Her Stephanie Milan uncle, aunt, and cousin are Tal, Leslie and Talia Milan of Fort Worth.

Aunt Eva Waldauf is from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Matisse was named after the famous French artist Henri Mattise, whose childlike drawings and wonderful colours remind us of this beautiful baby who had ivory skin, big blue eyes and an abundance of soft, velvety hair.

I would like to share a poem with you that I wrote in memory of Matisse.

Matisse A very special angel brushed her wings against our soul.

And in her fleeing moments left a story to be told.

Lodge 183, Arlington Hosts Prospective Members On Friday evening, August 25, the officers and members of SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington hosted a membership drive and invited prospective members.

Approximately 100 men, women and children attended the event, which was coordinated and organized by Leon and Angie Stiborek.

The children were plentiful at this lodge event. Under the watchful eye of the adults, they played with dinosaurs on tables, raced cars about on the lodge hall floor and contended for first place racer on in-line skates. One little gal declared herself the winner every time, even if she did come in last behind the boys. A mom and grandma were serenaded by a blissful little person singing into a muted microphone. Another petite "cherub" was engrossed in turning circles al1111111111 the way across the stage. The children amused and delighted Dorothy Kucera and I with their uninhibited antics.

When the dinner bell rang (so to speak) — a free dinner of chicken, roast beef, sausage and all the trimmings was served to everyone in attendance. After dinner, parents and children were treated to a free evening of entertainment at Chucky Cheez Pizza, compliments of SPJST Lodge 183.

Presentations on insurance products, fraternal events and activities and news of the SPJST society business were given by John Krizan, District Three Director; Jerry Kucera, District Three Field Representative; and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz. A special presentation was also given by past District Three Director Sid Pokladnik.

As a unique point of interest, Janie (Hubek), Rejcek, who was the first Youth Club President of SPJST Lodge 6 in Cottonwood, Texas, brought a pillow to the meeting that had been decorated years ago by Ruth Krizan. Janie was also the first SPJST District Three Queen in 1959. Ruth Krizan, who was the first Youth Leader of SPJST Lodge 6, is also the mother of District Three

Director John Krizan. (Needless to say—Director Krizan probably did not dream at the time the pillow was made that one day he would be a member of the Supreme Lodge.) Sister Krizan made the pillow for Janie as a token of appreciation when she left the youth club upon graduation. Janie has kept the pillow with her name on it as a keepsake. Everyone enjoyed viewing the pillow which is a beautiful, wellmade classic. Janie long ago transferred her membership from Cottonwood to Arlington and currently holds the position of First Vice President of the Arlington lodge.

Thanks to all the members who served up the dinner and made the evening possible: Annette Cepak, Dorothy Adamek, Angie Stiborek, Kenneth Cepak, John Adamek, and Leon Stiborek. Appreciation is also extended to Lodge 183 Lodge Officers John Adamek, President; Janie Rejcek, First Vice President; Angie Stiborek, Financial Secretary; Kenneth Cepak, Secretary; and Leon Stiborek, Treasurer, for having this membership drive. I understand that at least three new members have been sold insurance, as a result of this event and after being given the opportunity to see an SPJST lodge in action.

Also, thanks to Jerry and Dorothy Kucera, for putting up with me on the ride to Arlington. They are interesting conversationalists, and I enjoyed the ride in their comfortable family van. I hope that Dorothy's back is better. I am very emphatic to someone who has a back injury as I know first hand the pain and suffering!

Gulf Coast Czech Festival at Lodge 172, Pasadena Has Been Czech'd Out! The 11th Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival will be held on Sunday, October 19 in the SPJST Lodge 172 Hall at 3609 Preston in Pasadena from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Music by Julius Tupa's Sound Connection, fast-paced polkas, the Louisiana Czech Heritage Singers from Libuse, L.A. and the Capital City Czech Choraliers of Lincoln, Nebraska, along with the Concert Band from local Czech Club, SPJST Lodge 88, authentic Czechland costumed festival goers, educational displays, silent auction, and of course, those delicious kolaches will all be among the features during this annual event.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. followed by sandwiches and authentic Czech soup. General admission is $10 which includes the lunch plate, with children ages 10 and under admitted free.

BleiblervilleNelsonville Reports on August Meeting Lodge 202 held its regular quarterly meeting on August 17, 1997, at the Civic Center in Jourdanton, Texas. Twelve members were present including all officers. District Director Bob Bayer was our guest. We said the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Isabel Ventrcek read the minutes of our May meeting as Secretary Dora Quillian was late arriving. Treasurer Patsy Tymeak-Daughtrey gave the treasurer's report.

Due to unforeseen problems, our 50year pin presentation did not happen. It is rescheduled for our November meeting.

Reporting on the 100-year celebration in Belton were Dora Quillian, Willie Vrana, and Henry Belicek. They enjoyed a day trip to Belton. Bob Bayer also talked about the success of the celebration.

Circle of Women Reports on September Meeting There were 32 members and four guests at Sokol Corpus Christi on September 4 for the meeting of the Corpus Christi Circle of Women.

Honorary member Jerry Elzner is included in the membership count. Guests were Rhonda and Andriana White, daughter and granddaughter of Helen Kasparek; Dorothy Klapuch, daughter of Marcellina Mokry; and Chuck Varro, brother-in-law of Jerry and Milly Elzner.

Dorothy Klapuch recently moved to Co sus Christi from Gonzales where she lived for many years. She has been our guest whenever she visited her mother and we hope now that she is living here, she will become a member.

Chuck Varro, who lives in Cleveland, Ohio, attended a convention of former CCC workers in Austin just prior to visiting with Milly and Jerry Elzner. He is treasurer of the national organization. e told of the many national parks built and the billions of trees planted and also of the many young men who went on to rewarding careers based on their early training in the CCC. The group is advocating a similar program for today's young men.

Since our last meeting, Li/ Hruska became a great-grandmother and Milly and Jerry Elzner became grandparents for the second time. Congratulations to Lil, Milly, and Jerry. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Lil as she was the only member present celebrating her birthday in September. Her picture was taken for our scrapbook.

Happy Birthday across the miles to Sherrill Burge, Frances Faye Carroll, Marsha Elzner, and Ashley Padgett.

The dance held at Lodge 79 to celebrate SPJST's 100-year anniversary in conjunction with Majek Orchestra's 100th anniversary was a huge success. good time was had by over 500 people,

Becky did a great job as our secretary for two years and with our support should do a great job as president. Betty Jurica was appointed to the Sunshine Committee.

Thanks goes to Kathy Marek for the four years she served as our president and all the time and effort she put into it.

Kathy told us she is returning to school to study pharmacy. We know she will do well in her endeavor. We hope to see her the first Thursday of each month, even if she only has time to join us for lunch.

Thanks also to Della Elzner for taking such good care of our finances the past two years. The auditing committee reported she did a fine job.

As your financial secretary, I will be at Sokol by 9:30 a.m. on October 2 to collect dues before our 10:30 a.m. meeting.

Late corners can pay after the meeting. I hope the attendance for our first meeting of our seventh year in existence is as good as the last meeting of our sixth year.

Brooke, who was accompanied by her brother, Brian (see photo below), also visited with residents and accompanied them on an outdoor stroll.

On a recent visit, the First Baptist Church of Granger's Sunday School class helped residents play "twilight bingo." The class is under the direction of Mrs. Heidi Derning.

Leos Janacek, known primarily for his operas, also composed many wonderful pieces for piano and various chamber ensembles. "Po zarostlem chodnicku" ("On An Overgrown Path") is a set of ten highly original pieces, somewhat reminiscent of Robert Schumann, composed between 1901 and 1908. Dussek, an important Czech pianist and composer, roughly contemporary with Beethoven, will be represented by his Sonata in G minor, Op. 10. Mr. Waters will also perform works by Smetana and Dvorak, the first composers to incorporate Czech folk music into their classical compositions.

Czech National Cemetery Association Meets September 28 The annual meeting of the Czech National Cemetery Association will be held on Sunday, September 28, 1997, at 2 p.m. at 750 C.lubside Drive in East Bernard. It will be in the community room of the library.

Anyone who wishes is urged to bring refreshments for a social gathering after the meeting. Coffee and tea will be provided.

There are several issues that need to be discussed. We will need to get someone to mow the cemetery so we will be taking bids for that job. Also, we will have an election of officers and trustees for a twoyear term.

Church Christian Sisters Annual Quilt Show October 4 The Christian Sisters of the Temple Brethren Church will host their annual quilt show on Saturday, October 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in their fellowship hall of the church at 2202 Bird Creek Drive in Temple, Texas, behind Luby's and KMart.

Admission will be a voluntary donation of canned goods to be distributed to the needy during the upcoming holidays.

Door prizes will be given away throughout the show.

A queen-size quilt will be given away at the end of the show. Love donations will be available at the show or from any member of the Christian Sisters. The quilt was pieced by Vallie Tupy and quilted by the quilting ladies.

As well as show quilts, there will be quilts for sale. There will also be a variety of baked goods, canned goods and crafts.

A silent auction will also be held to include a yo-yo coverlet, made with the youngest hands of seven-year-old Weston Harmon and 12-year-old Chrystal Conners to the young-at-heart like Vlasta Chiles

Czech Heritage Society Reports oil September Meeting The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society met Tuesday, September 2 at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the First Christian Church. President Marie Matcek opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance with the members singing the Czech national anthem, Kde Domov Muj accompanied by Ethel Meek on the piano. Pastor Keith Gibbons of the First Christian Church gave the devotional.

President Matcek welcomed 70 members and guests. She introduced the youth leaders and eight young people, the Beseda dancers from the SPJST in Taiton.

Ethel and Kenneth Meek showed slides and pictures of the devastation of the floods in Moravia in the Czech Republic. The Meeks were in Moravia at the time and witnessed the floods. They asked members to send donations to the victims in Moravia. Mrs. Meek also showed framed pictures of rose petals and flowers she gathered while in Lidice.

It was the village that was destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. A film was shown on the new Czech Heritage and Cultural Center to be built in LaGrange, Texas. The topography in the LaGrange area is similar to the homelands of the Czech immigrants. It will be dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the history, language, culture and heritage of Texans of Czech ethnicity who trace their ancestry to the presentday Czech Republic, which also includes Slovakia. It is envisioned that the center will become a "Czech People's Center" with a library, archives, exhibit halls, auditorium, classrooms, meeting rooms, visitor information center, a gift shop and a book store in a central facility.

Outdoors, the complex will include an amphitheater, immigrants' memorials wall, memorial rose garden, a living history center with a Texas Czech farmstead and an early 20th century village with a dance hall and a Czech restaurant. Also, planned is a covered pavilion and picnic area for family reunions. The cultural center is a non-profit organization and depends on contributions. The Wharton County Chapter voted to send a donation.

The featured program were the SPJST Beseda dancers from Taiton. The young people were dressed in traditional Czech costumes. They danced to the music of several "spirited" Czech polkas and Czech waltzes.

Reunions Kulhanek Family Reunion The 25th Kulhanek Reunion of the descendants of Antonin and Celestina Kulhanek will be held on Sunday, September 21, 1997. It will be held at St. Peter and Paul Dining Hall in Frelsberg and will be held in memory of the three men who had the idea to have a reunion many years ago. They are Leonard Kulhanek, Bill Kovar, and Albert Kulhanek. This year, the Joseph Kulhanek Family will host the reunion.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m.

Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch. Plates, napkins, forks, knives, bread, coffee, tea, and ice will be furnished. Home-baked goods, homecanned goods, crafts, or any item you bring will be especially nice for a door prize or money-making project. We also need prizes for our children.

Youth Letters Section District Two Fall Meeting September 21 at Lodge 80, Holland Dear Members, The annual fall meeting will be held on Sunday, September 24 at Lodge 80, Holland. We are looking forward to an afternoon of fun-filled activities and games. The youth will be able to enjoy various games including a spinning wheel especially for youth.

The highlight will be the speeches of our District Two/State Runner-up Queen Jennifer Ashcraf-t of Cyclone and District Two King Chad Cervenka of Taylor.

Registration for the Christmas ornament contest will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Judging begins at 2 p.m. Check the rule book for contest rules. I hope each of you will enter this year. Stat . Duchess Enj 1 ys West Fes:: Elizabeth Wagner is the SPJST State Queen for 1997-1998 and I am her duchess. 1 am so happy she asked me to be her duchess. I am looking forward to an exciting year.

On Saturday, August 30, we had our first official appearance in the West Fest parade. It was great! The State Duke, Michael Kinney, and I carried the SPJST banner the whole parade route. After the parade we went to the fairgrounds for the festival. We all had a great time with our families.

I made a sand art kitten at one of the booths and rode some great rides. We were introduced in the afternoon in between the many Czech dancers.

Thank you, Ms. Joni, for taking care of everything and Mr. Howard for not having to blow the horn at us during the parade. It was great to see all of the families and I am looking forward to seeing them again at our next appearance-The Kolache Festival parade in Hallettsville on Saturday, September 27.

4, Hallettsville Youth Member Reports on West Fest Lodge

Dear Readers, I would like to thank Elizabeth Wagner for picking my little sister, Elizabeth, for her duchess, or I wouldn't have got to go to West on August 30 and have fun. The parade was nice, and there were lots of floats. My little brother and I got a lot of candy. After that we went to the Westfest. It was great! SPJST fit right in with the Czech heritage. They had tents full of crafts, a row of booths selling food ranging from potato pancakes to sausage-on-a-stick to funnel cakes, and there was music and plenty of rides for everyone. I really enjoyed the big slide they had I shared a funnel cake with my aunts, and enjoyed a sausage-ona-stick. I walked around the tents and

Dear Readers, I had a really busy summer doing SPJST activities. I participated in District YAD and won two first places in craft, and the group talent that I was in also won first. I was a duke and my cousin Marshall won king, so I was District One Duke. I got to wear this real fancy robe.

It was cool.

I went to the 100th Anniversary Celebration in Belton. I had a lot of fun going back and forth to Mr. Engelmann's and Mr. Dave's barbecue pits. Keith Gatewood drove me around in his golf cart.

That was a lot of fun. Mr. Engelmann and Mr. Dave won a trophy at the barbecue cookoff. My mom was a judge. She ate a bunch of ribs. I helped sell tee-shirts at the anniversary. I got a new tee-shirt and a sweatshirt for the winter.

I also went to camp at Camp Val Verde. It's the hottest place I've ever been We had fun riding a horse named ?eanut. I loved the night hike. My mom told a scary story and Ralph jumped down the stairs and scared everybody half to death except me.

State YAD was fun. I came home with two trophies. It was a good day.

Well that's enough for now. I have school tomorrow and I have to go to bed.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club Reports on September Meeting Dear Readers, On September 6, 1997, Lodge 17, New Tabor held our monthly meeting. I called the meeting to order. Kyle Skrabanek led the pledge and Brooke Paul gave the minutes. We had three visitors and one new member, Ashley Schoeneman. We discussed our booth at the Kolache Festival and decided on a meal for the Grandparent's Day banquet which will be held on October 11. Our door prize winners were Jessica Hejl, April Wotipka, and Jill Malazzo. After the meeting, we made "owl towels" for our grandparents.

Our monthly meeting had ten members, three adults, and one guest present.

Julie, our leader, talked about members coming in late for the meetings. Starting next month, she will deduct one point for every five minutes you are late, unless you have a very good excuse.

Each member was asked to make a list of ideas for fund raisers and activities for the next year. Examples include a bake sale or cake walk, silent auction, or car wash.

On September 21, a member can make a homemade Christmas ornament for the district fall meeting. There will be one winner in each age group. The winning ornaments will be placed on the Christmas tree at the SPJST Home Office in Temple.

Each member that sold cookbooks will receive 15 points. Please try to turn in all outstanding cookbooks or money.

We will have a district sleepover in October in Taylor. More information will come in next month's re rt.
