The Goal: 101 Scholarships in '98

SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive officially under way SPJST's annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive officially kicked off on Monday, September 1.

The goal of the 1997 Scholarship Program is to award 101 scholarships to coincide with the SPJST's 101st year of operation in 1998.

A total of 1,030 members, lodges and friends contributed a total of $14,743.38 to the 1996 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. That amount did not reflect donations made to the SPJST Scholarship Memorial Fund or the two perpetual scholarship donations contributed by Cindy Kovar ($50,000) and

Mr. and Mrs. Myles Marek ($10,000).

Additional Scholarship Program funding sources included an allocation by the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

"As always, every penny that is collected is applied directly towards the scholarship fund account," says State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz, who is coordinating the '97 drive.

Donors' names will be published in the Vestnik in the order that they are received. To enhance recognition of donors of $50 or more, their names will be printed in bold. Progress reports will be printed in the Vestnik on a regular basis. —SPJST-

Wha6 the -Big Idea?

Believing Is Achieving Last Saturday, August 23, youth club officers from around the state met at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton, Texas for the third annual youth club officers workshop. The title of this year's program, "Believing is Achieving," acknowledged the important role that attitude and will play in attaining any personal or group objective. Likewise, the program underscored the importance of establishing effective communication procedures within the local lodge, with a special emphasis on parliamentary procedure. A local group, the Bell County 4-H Ambassadors provided "ice-breakers" as as way to relax attendees and get them involved. They concluded their segment of the program by conducting a mock meeting, demonstrating the principles of effective parliamentary procedure.

Earlier that morning, I had a chance to address the participants. To help me prepare for my part of the program, State Youth Director Joni Lange shared with me the results of a communications exercise completed by youth participants in the June Leaders in Training Workshop held in La Grange.

Essentially, the young people were asked to identify what they "liked" and what they "didn't like" about membership in their Society. What a refreshingly direct approach! What they had to say sounded familiar. Indeed, many of their observations mirrored opinions that I have heard expressed by more seasoned members of our Society.

Generally stated, both young and old tend to agree on the following dislikes:

• The idea that we are making a positive difference in the life of of our communities.

All of which raises the question: What can we do - as individuals and as lodge members -- to accentuate the positive aspects of membership in the SPJST? A good place to start is with the title of last week's youth club officers workshop: "Believing is Achieving." The first step on the road to success begins with believing in your good ideas and then following through on them. In the words of author Brian Tracy, "There is no limit to what you can accomplish if you know the direction you are going and you are willing to make the effort."

Simply talking about your ideas with other members is an important second stage in bringing new life to your local lodge. It helps others to visualize what you can already see. The third stage involves developing an action plan for the project and then, summoning the commitment and creativity necessary to bring the idea to life.

One very exciting idea that several SPJST lodges have been exploring involves building non-traditional partnerships with other groups within the community. Look at any typical issue of the Vestnik and you'll see examples of SPJST lodges working with a variety of educational, heritage, patriotic or community service groups. To further illustrate the point, the youth officers workshop benefitted greatly from the 4-H Ambassadors participation in their program.

It's a good idea whose time has come.

Minutes of the July 21, 22 and 23, 1997 Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas The meeting was called to order by Chairman of the Board Vanek at 1:00 p.m., with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Johnnie Krizan—District III Stanley Broz—District IV, Vice Chairman of the Board Louis Hanus—District V Matt S. President Leshikar was not present for the July 21 afternoon session.

The meeting opened with the Supreme Lodge Members saying the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence in memory of deceased members.

The minutes were discussed page by page. On page 169 under automobiles, it should read, "Director Broz moved to purchase and keep attached magnetic signs for all the vehicles except for the vehicle assigned to the officers."

On page 172 the third paragraph next to last sentence should read, "Chairman Vanek responded this is assigned to the Supreme Lodge President."

Motion by Director Hanus, seconded by Vice President Mikeska to accept the minutes with corrections. Motion carried unanimously.

AUDIT - Chairman Vanek made the following assignments for the audit by the directors: General Ledger - Director Hanus and Director Krizan Voucher - Director Bayer, Director Klinkovsky, and Director Vavra.

Automobiles - Director Broz and Chairman Vanek.

Recess was taken from 2:00 p.m. until 8:30 a.m., on July 22, to allow time for the directors to complete their audit.

Chairman Vanek welcomed Editor Vanicek to the meeting.

OLD BUSINESS SURVEYS - There was a discussion on surveys and when a survey could be waived.

Legal Advisor Kacir will provide members of the Supreme Lodge a letter with information as under what condition title companies may accept surveys seven years old or older.

Position Available at the SPJST Home Office

AUDIT - The directors expressed a need for there to be uniform logs in each vehicle the Society owns. These logs should include at a minimum, the mileage, expenses and who used the car for every mile driven.

The vouchers were viewed and President Leshikar was questioned about one voucher.

He agreed to report back to the Supreme Lodge with the information the Directors requested. There was mention of some incoming telephone calls on the WAT's line that seemed to be lengthy. Director Hanus reported the books were in order.

There was a lengthy discussion on the automobiles regarding which automobile might need to be replaced and whether or not it might be more economical to pay mileage instead of the Society owning automobiles. By common consent it was decided for the officers to do a study on the automobiles and present their findings during the October Supreme Lodge meeting.

100TH ANNIVERSARY - Keith Gatewood, Gene McBride, Barbara Rosenkranz, and Daryl Entrop were invited to the Supreme Lodge meeting. The Supreme Lodge members acknowledged these employees for the extra work they did in coordinating the tournaments that took place.

The expenses from the Golf Tournament were presented to the Supreme Lodge members. The coordinators for the golf tournament expressed their appreciation to all their helpers. They also reported that at least one member of each team was a member. The barbecue cook-off had at least 1,500 people in the grounds Saturday. Of all the cookoff contestants, 40 percent were SPJST members and eight lodges sent teams.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that out of the 13 winners of the $50.00 and the camcorders only four were SPJST members.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to follow-up on the leads attained at the 100th Anniversary celebration and report back to the Supreme Lodge on the actual number of leads that became members. Motion carried unanimously.

The Supreme Lodge acknowledged all the employees who worked at the 100th Anniversary. They did a great job and all their work was appreciated. Vice President Mikeska stated that Editor Vanicek should be recognized for all his hard work on the tabloid. The tabloid was distributed to all recipients of the Temple Daily Telegram and the Vestnik subscribers. There is to be an article on the SPJST during the month of August in the Houston Chronicle.

Recess was taken from 10:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m.

STATEWIDE CHARITY OR PROJECT - There was a discussion of the correspondence received concerning selection of a possible statewide charity. It was discussed about having several different projects with each project lasting about a year.

It was also suggested to possibly have a statewide fund raiser with the monies going to the local lodges. Vice President Mikeska moved for the Supreme Lodge to make a commitment to improve the Library, Archives, and Museum and also make long range plans for Temple to become a Czech Cultural Center and Genealogy Center. Motion seconded by Director Krizan and carried unanimously.

Dr. Ron Klinger and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz were welcomed to the meeting. Dr. Klinger is President of the Center for Successful Fathering.

He presented a synopsis of his program and ways it might be implemented either by the Home Office or local lodges. Dr. Klinger was asked to provide the Supreme Lodge a proposal of how his program would work in the SPJST and also provide estimate of costs.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 10, 1997 Clerk: Will assist State Fraternal Activities Coordinator with clerical work, reports and compiling numerical information. Will assist in organizing tournaments and other events, Will handle lodge communications for State FAC while out of the office. Some travel and weekends may be involved.

Skills Needed: Typing (50 wpm). Ability to write press releases and prepare layout for flyers.

Should be skilled in Lotus spreadsheets, Amipro and Word applications as well as 0S2 and Microsoft operating systems. Must have optimistic personality, initiative, ability to work with people and eagerness to learn. Ability to complete work without supervision extremely important. Organized and deductive thinker a must.

CALENDAR - Bids for the 1997 calendar was received from four companies and opened at the Supreme Lodge meeting. There were questions concerning one of the bids. By common consent, it was decided that more information was needed on one bid and then all the bids needed to be reviewed. Authorization was given to the officers to award the contract after all questions have been answered.

Editor Vanicek presented his report to the meeting and a discussion followed each item. The recommendations of the Publication Committee for the Vestnik printed in the May 25 issued were reviewed item by item.

Recess was taken from 12:25 p.m. until 1:30 p.m.

There was a lengthy discussion on the presentation by Dr. Klinger. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, for the officers to report in the October meeting the feasibility of implementing Dr. Klinger's program on a trial basis.

This study would include costs and where and how the trial program would be operated. Motion carried unanimously.

PUBLICATION commn 1LE - The Publication Committee recommended three special issues: Member Services Directory, Insurance-Mortgage Lending Digest, and a SPJST Annual Report. These special issues would be published in lieu of the Vestnik for that week. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Howard Leshikar, to accept the recommendation. Motion carried unanimously.

Mortgages on Qualified Owner-Operated Business Real Estate

The Publication Committee recommended that the Editor analyze the cost of putting the Vestnik on microfilm and present the finding to the Supreme Lodge. By common consent, it was agreed to postpone action on this recommendation at this time. The Supreme Lodge will be requesting further information about the advisability of imaging all the Society's records at a later date.

The Publication Committee requested reconsideration of the Home Office going on the Internet and having a home page developed. There is an internee station in the Home Office for a trial period, but it has not been in use long enough to have informa-

REACTIVATING OF LODGES - Each director has designated at least two lodges to concentrate efforts on. The directors made the following reports:

The Publication Committee recommended that an amusement section be added to the Vestnik weekly. Director Klinkovsky and President Leshikar moved to the recommendation provided it did not add more pages to the Vestnik and the section added at the discretion of the Editor. Motion carried unanimously.

District I - Lodge 141, Sealy - There have been several meetings with the lodge by Director Vavra and President Leshikar. Three members have volunteered for officer positions and one member is interested in becoming a sales representative.

The Publication Committee, at request of the members, recommends adding more color to the Vestnik and for the Supreme Lodge to authorize the funds in the 1997 budget for the additional color. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Broz, to consider adding color to the Vestnik the next time the Vestnik contract is awarded.

Motion carried unanimously.

The Publication Committee recommended the Editor adopt UPI Style Book as the guide for the Vestnik composition and amend the style guide to include various SPJST terms. The Publication Committee also recommends that the Editor solicit the communication needs of each department and work with the Financial Secretary to propose a budget addressing these needs to the Supreme Lodge. The above recommendations were referred to the Editor for his consideration.

Editor Vanicek visited with a Texas A & M Press representative to consider developing a textbook to serve as an introduction to the Czech experience in Texas. An acceptable text would supplement the current Texas history books being used in elementary schools throughout the state. Vice President Mikeska and Legal Advisor Kacir moved to endorse the development of a textbook as long as there are no monetary costs to the Society. Motion carried unanimously.

AUTOMOBILE LOANS - At this time President Leshikar reported not enough information was available to make a recommendation concerning making automobile loans. He will present more information during the October meeting.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR - State Youth Leader Lange's report was reviewed.

The LIT workshop had 61 participants. The emphasis of this workshop was improving critical thinking and team building skills. State Youth Achievement Day weekend is August 2-3 in Temple.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rozenkranz's report was reviewed. There was a discussion on reimbursements to lodges for holding tournaments. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to increase the amount payable to local lodges holding Tarok, Straight Dominoes, "42" Dominoes and the volley ball state tournaments to $250.00, effective January 1, 1998. Motion carried unanimously.

A discussion concerning the location for the local lodge officers' workshop and Incentive banquet was held. It was decided to see if both functions could be held at the same location. By common consent, it was decided for Director Vavra to offer Lodge 186, Caldwell the opportunity to hold the functions.

LIBRARY ARCHIVES AND MUSEUM - From March 24, 1997, through July 15, 1997, there were 957 visitors to the museum. Dorothy Pechal made a visit to Rogers Elementary School and presented a program to 80 students.

SALES - Vice President Mikeska reported that as of June 30, 1997, there have been 639 applications received; $19,769,000 insurance written; and $15,824,000 insurance issued. The amount of earned premium is down compared to the first six months of 1996. This may be due to the extensive training the State Field Representatives are doing. He reported there is a need to target the individuals who are in their thirties.

NEW LODGES - The lodges in process are 204, Stephenville; 205, Terrell; 206, Mexia; 207, Carrizo Springs; 208, Graham; and 209, Hamilton. Vice President Mikeska moved to extend the target date for organizing of the new lodges in process to January 1, 1998. Motion seconded by Director Broz and carried unanimously.

ILLUSTRATION SOFTWARE - Vice President Mikeska reported the Universal Life part of the illustration software is complete and testing of the program should be complete within 30 days. Texas Insurance Department's required date for the software is likely to be January 1998.

Lodge 169, Brenham - The first meeting between the members, Director Vavra and President Leshikar is scheduled for August 13.

District II - Lodge 155, Austin - Director Klinkovsky and State Field Representative Gatewood attended one meeting with the members, but no goals were set.

Lodge 174, Rockdale - Director Klinkovsky and State Field Representative Gatewood attended one meeting with the members. Lodge 174 has changed their meeting time from quarterly to monthly meetings. There is only one sales representative and the lodge is trying to find another one. The lodge is currently trying new activities to increase member attendance.

District III - Lodge 5, Tioga/Pilot, has been reorganized since November 1996. The lodge is very active and is holding monthly meetings; has formed a youth group; participated in the spring district meeting; and the membership is increasing.

Lodge 54, West, has been approached about forming a youth club and changing from quarterly to monthly meetings.

District IV - Lodge 76, Wichita Falls, is trying to locate a sales representative from the area and some of the members recently attended the District IV Spring meeting.

Lodge 157, Lubbock, has a new sales representative who is taking the Fraternal Insurance Council course. Director Broz gave the credit to State Field Representative Kucera for locating the sales representative. Director Broz and State Field Representative Kucera are trying to locate sales representatives for other lodges in his district.

District V - Director Hanus has selected Lodge 149, Alvin; Lodge 114, Fairchilds; Lodge 181, Conroe; Lodge 175, Rosenberg; and Lodge 65, Crosby to work with. He has been unable to attend a meeting with any of the lodge officers.

District VII - Lodge 31, Yoakum, is trying to get a new sales representative with the help of State Field Representative Jim Wiest. Director Bayer has been unable to attend meetings with the officers of Lodge 137, Taft; Lodge 164, Rio Hondo; and Lodge 117, Robstown.

District VI - The director has been working with Lodge 8, Weimar, which now has a new sales representative. Lodge 41, Port Lavaca, is trying to get a new sales representative. Lodge 184, Moulton, has new officers and need one more sales representative.

The directors reported they are having good results with some of the lodges they are working with.

NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS - Vice President Mikeska reported that the reproposal illustration programs do not work on the notebook computers that the State Field Representatives are currently using. Director Bayer moved to reconsider the notebook computers, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. Motion carried unanimously. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to purchase four Dell notebook computers at a cost not to exceed $3,400 each. These new notebook computers are to be used by the State Field Representatives and the old notebook computers are to be utilized by the home office. Motion carried unanimously.

MILLION DOLLAR CLUB PINS - Vice President Mikeska reported on the redesigned million dollar pins. The number of years a sales representative has been a million dollar producer is engraved on a removable tab at the bottom and this will be changed each year a sales representative qualifies.

100TH ANNIVERSARY - The sale of 100th Anniversary items will be marketed through the Vestnik Recess was taken from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m.

NEW PRODUCTS - The new MOD-20 is complete and the rates have been distributed to the sales representatives. Actuary John Agee has been working on the premiums for the whole life insurance.

STATE FIELD MANAGER - Vice President Mikeska reported on State Field Manager McBride's travel. Currently there are ten sales representatives in process of training and 18 sales representatives that have been trained since the last meeting.

Director Vavra requested a list of all the sales representatives trained since January 1, 1997, and the amount of their production.

AUDITORS - Jim Therrell and Steve Hornbaker from Jaynes, Reitmeier, Boyd and Therrell, P.C., presented a report of their recent audit to all Supreme Lodge members.

Mr. Therrell reported the books were in order and no figures were changed. A copy of their report has been forwarded to the Texas Department of Insurance. 'In response to a question regarding interest sensitive products, their rate of return and effect on the profitability of the company, Mr. Therrell responded that everything was normal and that he did not detect any trends that are detrimental to the Society. Mr. Therrell presented the findings of their audit of the securities in the bank vault, custody account and brokerage houses. The difference in the way the custody account does their reporting and the way SPJST does their reporting was explained. They reported that all securities of the SPJST were accounted for.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer reported that an updated Lodge Officer listing has been received from all of the Lodges except for Lodges 8, 32, 41, 82, 149, 151, 167, 181, and 188.

In addition, Secretary-Treasurer stated that the letters concerning the filing of the IRS 990/990-T forms for 1996 were mailed to the Lodge Officers in January 1997. These forms were due to be filed with the IRS by May 15, 1997. To date the following Lodges have not replied: 1, 5, 6, 8, 16, 20, 24, 25, 31, 35, 38, 41, 47, 65, 79, 80, 82, 89, 110, 114, 130, 143, 148, 149, 151, 161, 167, 172, 177, 183, 184, 188, and 200.

SPJST ANNIVERSARY COOKBOOK - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin summarized the sales of the 100th Anniversary Cookbook as of June 30. There have been 3,410 cookbooks sold by the home office with a profit of $14,507.95 and 5,421 cookbooks sold by the local lodges and youth clubs with a profit of $18,507.95. SPJST has donated to the Ronald McDonald House a total of $17,000.

VESTNIK - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the total Vestnik subscribers now stand at 9,855 as of June 30, 1997. This amount has increased by 177 since the first of the year. A total of 77 non members have paid their subscription fee prior to July 1, 1997. Subscription fee for non members amounts to $20.00 per year. The total cost per week for postage now amounts $1,700.00. Cost in printing the Vestnik amounts to approximately $1,025.00

QUARTERLY STATEMENT/BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas went over the quarterly statement page by page. The 1997 budget was reviewed and the figures were in line with what they should be for the first six months of 1997. He will furnish a detailed report of the 100th Anniversary at the October Supreme Lodge meeting.

LITIGATION/BANKRUPTCIES/FORECLOSURES - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on mortgages and certificates in process of bankruptcies and mortgages in process of foreclosure and possible litigation.

LODGE REM-1 IVATION - It was decided that all seven districts will have a report in the Vestnik after each Supreme Lodge meeting about the successes in each district on reactivating lodges. It was pointed out that some lodges are not having meetings as stated in the by-laws. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, for the President's Department to write the lodges that the Supreme Lodge is on record that the By-Laws should be followed and the Supreme Lodge expects the By-Laws to be followed. Motion carried unanimously.

TOMORROW FUND - Vice President Mikeska reported SPJST is eligible to sell the Tomorrow Fund. The Society is not planning on selling the fund until further information is available for a decision to be made.

DELINQUENCIES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported 31 loans are past due and made recommendations on these loans. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded

by Vice President Mikeska, to accept Secretary-Treasurer's recommendation. Motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin recommended a loss reserve of $16,000 to be set up for the past due mortgage loans. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, to accept the loss reserve. Motion carried unanimously.

After further discussion, Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, that when a loan becomes four months past due between Supreme Lodge meetings that it be automatically sent to the Legal Advisor for foreclosure. Motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar is to let all the lodges know there are no more monies available for the fund set up by the 1988 Convention.

100Th ANNIVERSARY - The CSA fraternal donated $250.00 to the SPJST scholarship fund in honor of SPJST's 100th Anniversary.

On July 12 and 13, 1997, a conference entitled "Czech-Americans in Transition: Challenges and Opportunities for the Future" was held by the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) in conjunction with the historic celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST, one of the oldest Czech-American organizations in US) in Belton, Texas.

At this conference, educators, historians, social scientists, librarians, and other scholars joined with business people and community leaders to discuss key issues facing Czech-Americans and Slovak-Americans today; fraternal and cultural activities; the establishment and maintenance of archives, libraries, and cultural centers.. An entire day was reserved for discussions of relations between the United States and the Czech Republic.

United in a commonality of purpose, the undersigned believe that this historic event will mark the beginning of a warm friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between the SPJST and SVU. Like other citizens of the United States and Canada, nations which thrive on cultural and racial diversity, the members of our organizations realize that there is no conflict between our loyalty to and love for the country where we live and our desire to preserve the rich and distinctive cultural heritage of our ethnic origins.

In this spirit, we will do our best to preserve the Czech, as well as the Slovak, cultural heritage in North America, and we call on all interested men and women to help us in this endeavor—particularly in efforts to encourage our children to learn about their heritage—and to establish and promote cultural and language programs at universities throughout the United States and Canada, as well as educational exchanges with the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

MORTGAGE LOANS - There was a discussion on letters being mailed to the members concerning the mortgage loan program. One-fourth of all the telephone inquiries for the past two months has been as a result of these letters.

INCOME AND EXPENSES - Financial Secretary Mikulas compared all income and expenses for 1997 with the same period of 1996. Total expenses have decreased by approximately 1 percent for this period while income has increased by 1 percent.

INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that based on the certificates issued, the following is the number of lodges that may be eligible for incentive awards:

RETIREMENT PLAN - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the SPJST Defined Benefit Plan is designed for the payment of a life time monthly benefit commencing at normal (or early) retirement age. The annual funding costs are not determined by formula but are based on actuarial projections of expected long-term interest rates, salary increases, rates of employee termination and mortality. No individual accounts of the trust fund are maintained, but accrued benefits are maintained for each participant.

A.M. BEST - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that Richard Kirk and Richard McMillan representatives of A.M. Best have informed the SPJST it has retained its rating of A- (Excellent) for the year 1997.

EMPLOYEES - The employees handbook under Funerals, item number five, was reviewed. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to amend the funerals under item number five to read: "Attendance at funeral of friends or other obligatory services: normal funeral services which include church services and cemetery burial. If out of town, limited to one-half working day. Out of town is considered 30 miles or more." Motion carried unanimously.

100TH ANNIVERSARY - Financial Secretary reported on the 100th Anniversary tabloid mailed to all members that receive the Vestnik. The cost in printing 10,000 copies was included with the advertisement cost. The postage for this mailing amounted to $1,806.26.

ANNUITIES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported there are 1,490 certificates issued for Annuity I and 1,034 certificates issued in Annuity II. The total amount deposited in annuities amount to $43,748,095.98.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer reported on lodge meetings he had attended. He thanked President Leshikar for attending District VII YAD and there was a good attendance at YAD. The insurance classes and FIC class have been well attended. A District officer has resigned and will be replaced at the next District officers' meeting.

Lodge 93 has requested to be notified earlier in the year if any of their members receive scholarships so the lodge can have a representative at the awards ceremony.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek reported on attending the following: Lodge 28 - Fast Bernard meeting and presentation of 50 year pins; NFC Convention in San Antonio; Lodge 97 Festival; Herman Sons Convention in San Antonio; pictures with Governor Bush at the Proclamation; Lodge 148 meeting, 50 year pin presentation and sales representative meetings; sales meeting at Lodge 23 and Lodge 4; Youth Camp Lone Star in LaGrange; Lodge 40 dinner and 50 year pin presentation; SPJST 100th Anniversary in Belton; District VI YAD at Lodge 30; and several NFC courses at District meeting.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting will begin October 14 at 8:30 a.m.

Lodge 80, Holland Hosts District Two Fall Meeting September 21

Legal Advisor Kacir reported that there will be a Mortgage Lending Institute on October 2 and 3. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to authorize Legal Advisor Kacir to attend this Institute. Motion carried unanimously.

DISTRICT I - Director Vavra reported on attending District I YAD, Lodge 17 Tarok tournament, sales classes, and the signing of the Proclamation by Governor Bush.

The State Horseshoe Tournament had to be cancelled because of rain. Director Vavra had been requested by Lodge 17 to request reimbursement for rental of the hall and refreshments that were purchased. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by President Leshikar to reimburse the Lodge $150.00. Motion carried unanimously. Director Vavra expressed the need for only one individual to answer the telephone.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky reported on delivering the check to the winner of the Deer Antler Contest, attending five FTC classes and five local lodge meetings. He reported on attending District II YAD. He congratulated the officers and employees for doing a good job on the 100th Anniversary.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan reported Lodge 6 will be celebrating their 100th Anniversary on August 17, with Dr. Robert Skrabanek delivering the key note speech.

Director Krizan inquired about the update to the SPJST history book. President Leshikar responded only twenty lodges have responded with information and he could use the Directors assistance in obtaining the information.

A request was made to allow Lodge 183, Arlington to have the discount for 1996 on their mortgage loan since they did receive the gold award in 1996. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, to make an exception this time and grant Lodge 183 the discount on their mortgage loan. Motion carried unanimously. Director Krizan requested the Supreme Officers work out a system whereby at least one officer attend special functions at local lodges.

There was a discussion concerning the room which is used for training new sales representatives and the need to provide private workspace for employees handling sensitive and confidential material. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to reconsider allowing training of sales representatives to be in the Board room.

Motion carried unanimously. Motion by Director Krizan to allow the Board room to be used for training sales representatives, if the conference room is not available.

Motion seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir and carried unanimously.

There was a discussion on raising the limit cap on Annuity II. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to raise the cap for Annuity II from $150,000 to $200,000. Motion carried unanimously.

Director Krizan thanked former Director Pokladnik for his continued support in District III. By common consent, it was agreed for any former Supreme Lodge member to be reimbursed reasonable expenses to attend the Texas Fraternal Congress.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz thanked Legal Advisor Kacir for attending the District IV Spring meeting and President Leshikar for attending District IV YAD The District IV Fun Day will be September 13 and the Czech Fest will be held in Rowena on October 25. He thanked the officers for their work on the 100th Anniversary.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus thanked Secretary-Treasurer Anglin for attending the District V YAD. He reported there have been eight or nine deaths in Lodge 88 and he officiated at some of the services.

Dear District Two Members, This is a reminder that the District Two Fall Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 21, 1997, at Holland SPJST Lodge 80 in Holland, Texas.

The day will begin with registration starting at 1 p.m. Registration for the youth club Christmas ornaments, kolace, horseshoes, and needlecraft contests will start at 1 p.m. The adult meeting will start at 2 p.m. The games will begin shortly following the business meeting and last until 4:30 p.m. Door prizes and announcements of contest winners will be at 4:30 p.m. along with raffle winners and silent auction winners. The evening meal will be served at 5 p.m. and will be $2 per person.

Like last year, 20 free tickets for games will be given to each person who registers by 2 p.m. Those who register after this time will not receive free tickets. Extra tickets will be available at the cost of five for $1.

Activities planned will be three country stores, one youth country store, and games for the youth.

Contests will be kolache, needlecraft, horseshoe and Christmas ornament for youth. Participants in the kolache and needlecraft contests must be 18 years of age or older. For the Christmas ornament contest, young people are encouraged to see their lodge youth leader for details.

The District Two Youth Club will have a silent auction again this year to raise funds and are accepting items. ($10 value) from those individuals or lodges that wish to donate. Contact Patsy Koslovsky if you would like to donate.

We are asking that each family bring canned goods or items appropriate for the youth country store and a cake for the country stores. If everyone brings two to three items per person in their family, we will have more items in the country stores. You need not bring anything for the evening-meal.

SPJST Kolache Contest Guidelines: 1, The SPJST Kolache Baking Contest is open to all SPJST members of nonprofessional status.

Nonprofessionals are considered those who do not sell kolaches through a bakery or other establishment.

2 Kolaches must be made from scratch, using yeast dough.

3, Entries must consist of six average-sized kolaches of the same filling on a disposable tray or plate.

4. Kolache entries must be made by one person, no team entries, 5. All kotaches may be sold after the event and proceeds will be donated to the District Fund.

6. Winner must be present at the announcement of awards.

7, The First Place Winner may compete the following year.

Lodge 160, San Angelo Hosts District Four Fall Fun Day September 13 at St. Ambrose Hall in Wall Please remember our upcoming Fall Fun Day to be held Saturday, September 13. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at St. Ambrose Parish Hall in Wall, Texas.

A meal will be served at noon. Each family of Lodge 160 is asked to bring a dessert for the meal.

Contests to be held include pastry, needlework, handicraft, and horseshoes.

The deadline to bring items for contests

Lodges 65 and 91 in Crosby Host District. Five Fall Fun Day September 21 at American Legion Hall District Five Fall Fun Day is September 21, 1997, in Crosby, Texas, at the American Legion No. 658, located on FM 2100 in Crosby, Texas.

The district officers recently met with host Lodges 65 and 91 at Crosby, Texas, to plan the District Five Fall Fun Day. Registration for the day is at 11 a.m. for horseshoes, kolaches, handmade needlework and handmade handcraft contests. Registration for the Christmas ornament contest for youth members is also at 11 a.m. We will also have dominoes, bingo, and volleyball for adults and teenagers. There will be prizes for all.

Anyone can enter; however, there is a limit of one item in each category.

A short meeting will be held.

The noon meal will be a covered dish.

Everyone is asked to bring enough food

for their family—a side dish of vegetable salad and a sweet or pastry. The meat and drinks will be furnished by the district.

After lunch, we will play games. This is a family activity, so please come out and bring a friend.

Door prizes will be given, so don't forget to bring your door prizes and also prizes for bingo.

Let's all get active in District Five.

We have a lot of lodges in our district.

Lodge 30, Taiton Hosts District Six Fall Meeting Social September 21 in Taiton Attention District Six Lodges: The fall meeting social for District Six will be Sunday, September 21, 1997 in Taiton. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. and a noon meal will be served by hosting Lodge 30, Taiton.

In celebration of SPJST's 100th birthday this year, everyone attending will be asked to register their birthdate, and birthday cakes will be drawn for each month of the year. In addition, the district will be sponsoring the usual contests, having the Wheel of Fortune and the youth will be providing entertainment.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood Celebrates 100th Anniversary SPJST Lodge Moraysti Bratri No. 6, Cottonwood celebrated its 100th anniversary on Sunday, August 17, 1997, at the lodge hall in Cottonwood, Texas.

The lodge was chartered on July 1, 1897.

Accordion music by John Sulak, Regina Peevey, and Marvin Cepak filled the air as guests were seated in the hall that was built in 1902. Master of Ceremonies and District Three Director Johnnie Krizan opened the program with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Lodge 6 Youth Club member Celia Dobecka.

Lodge 6 President Robert H. Dobecka then welcomed the approximately 150 guests to the grand celebration.

Before the invocation by Father Isidore Rozycki, pastor of St. Martins Parish in West, SPJST State Field Representative Helen Hegwood of Lodge 88, Houston sang the American and Czech national anthems. Guests were then served the beef brisket and smoked turkey meal by members of the West Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Following the meal, proclamations were presented to Lodge 6 recognizing their 100 years of fraternal service in the community. Texas State Representative for District 57 Jim Dunnam commended the lodge on its exemplary record of public service as he presented a Resolution from the Texas State House of Representatives. West Chamber of Commerce President Gary Gardner complimented the lodge on its community involvement and presented a certificate of congratulations to the lodge. Mr. Krizan also read congratulatory notes from Congressman Chet Edwards and State Comptroller and SPJST member John Sharp. Comptroller Sharp also sent a watercolor print of his home SPJST Lodge 97, Placedo that will be displayed in the Cottonwood hall.

Mr. Krizan then introduced local dignitaries and SPJST representatives from Lodge 6 and other lodges, District Three, the Supreme Lodge and the Home Office. Lodge 6 Vice President Al Soukup recognized Mr. Krizan for his 20 years of service as Lodge 6 President.

May the SPJST continue to serve the people of Texas for many generations. May it continue to merit the respect that is has earned over these many years . . ." Mr. Krizan ended with "Truly, SPJST's finest hours lie ahead in the vast unknown of the future."

Anniversary items like mugs, cups, tee-shirts, and commemorative coins and programs were available at the celebration. The lodge's youth club offered SPJST Anniversary Cookbooks, the book "We're Czechs" and handmade Czech angels and pin cushions. The lodge's commemorative program honored its forefathers and emphasized Czech heritage and culture.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood continues to be an active lodge in the area and offers its facilities to the community for weddings, parties, anniversaries, charities, family reunions, and other events. Each year on the third Sunday in July, Lodge 6 sponsors its annual family day picnic and bazaar with games, fund raising activities, and food. On Labor Day weekend each year, the lodge sponsors a food booth during Westfest to raise funds for fraternal and charitable purposes. The lodge meets the first Sunday of each month at 2 p.m.

"We're Czechs." In his presentation, Dr. Skrabanek encouraged the audience to pay tribute to the lodge founders and to remember what they went through to form organizations like the SPJST. "The SPJST stands out as a real leader that has stood the test of time," Dr. Skrabanek said. He also visited with attendees and autographed copies of his book after the program.

Mr. Krizan also paid tribute to the ten Lodge 6 charter members and recognized their descendants who attended the celebration. "A great debt is owed to this group of individuals whose pioneering spirit and determined courage brought the SPJST into existence," he said. Mr. Krizan commented on the idea of Czech frugality and how it played a hand in preserving the present-day building. "When it became necessary to enlarge the building during the 1950s and 1960s, the trend was to tear down and build anew," Mr. Krizan said. "I remember my dad and the other members saying that they did not want to waste what was already standing; so they did build, but they also kept the original building," referring to the 1964 remodel when space was added to the original hall. "One should not worship a building," Mr. Krizan said as he looked around the hall, "but this building holds so many memories to so many people." This year, the lodge added an additional 1200 square feet, including extra kitchen space, a private meeting room and a new youth room.

In closing, Mr. Krizan quoted Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris on the occasion of the SPJST's 75th anniversary and stated that his words still hold true today on our 100th

23, Moravia Meets September 16 Lodge

Lodge 23, Moravia will meet September 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the lodge hall. This year, our lodge is 100 years old. So members, try to make at least one meeting to the lodge on our 100th Anniversary by attending this meeting or the one in December, but we encourage you to attend both.

The lodge hall has received a new metal roof. The hall was built in 1913 and has been used for meetings ever since then, except in extreme cold weather, (Editor's Note: Please see additional when the meetings were held elsewhere.

24, Cyclone Hosts Children's Miracle Network Benefit Dance September 13

The Scott & White Home Care Agency/Infusion Services will host its annual dance and auction to benefit children's services at Scott & White through the Children's Miracle Network. Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard Meets September 14 Lodge

Dear Members, Here it is again, the year is slowly sinking into autumn then to winter and it is time for the September monthly meeting. It will be held on the second Sunday, the 14th, at 2 p.m. in our meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street.

The agenda will follow the set order of business and will be open.

A fraternal hour buffet luncheon is scheduled to start after the business meeting adjourns. The fare will be standard.

August Meeting Report With a quorum present, the monthly meeting on the second Sunday, the 10th of August, convened on time. All reports were accepted as given and several motions were made and passed to take care of pending business.

One report covered the 100th year celebration of the society in Belton and the reason that the local lodge monthly meeting was not held.

A motion to accept four new members was part of the group of motions that were passed. We wish to welcome these new members into the lodge. At present, their names are being withheld until their policies are delivered to them by the sales representatives.

As it is noted the District Six Fall Meeting is scheduled on the third Sunday in September, the 21st. Another meeting in our area will convene at 2 p.m. on the fourth Sunday, the 28th, in the East Bernard Branch of the Wharton County Library. It is the annual meeting of the Czech National Cemetery Association.

Many of our lodge members are resting in this cemetery.

38, Kovar Reports on Recent Meetings Lodge

Lodge 38, Kovar held their monthly meetings at 7 p.m. on May 19, June 16, July 21 and August 18. Johnnie Janak opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes and treasurer's reports were given and in July, the treasurer's books were audited and approved.

In May, we lost one of our members, Genevieve Young. We stood for a moment of prayer.

We also made a donation to the Smithville Fire Department in May. In June, the hall was rented to a movie company who was filming scenes for the movie "Hope Floats."

In July, we talked about the repair of the septic system at the lodge, and in August the work was completed.

Annual Dinner is September 14 In August, we made plans for our annual dinner and fund raiser set for September 14, 1997. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. with an auction to follow. Plates are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Hope everyone will plan to attend.

66, Waco Reports on August Meeting Lodge

The general meeting of Lodge 66, Waco was held on Sunday, August 21, 1997, at Linden Hall with 29 members in attendance. The youth presented the flags, led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Motto. President John Engelke announced that Brother Charlie Mueller fell and broke his hip and that he also had pneumonia; Sister Ruby Orsag fell and suffered a facial cut requiring several stitches; also Sister Doris Glatter's mother, Mrs. Elsie Pickens, was seriously ill. We wish them a speedy recovery and will keep them in our prayers.

Sister Lucille Cervenka, Entertainment Committee Chairperson, gave a financial report and discussed food items to be sold during the fund raiser on September 20.

The menu includes sausage-on-a-stick, sauerkraut, nachos, donuts, coffee and fruit juice.

Secretary Dana McAdams read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge regarding the golf tournament on August 23. Anyone interested in participating should contact her at the close of the meeting. Schedules and flyers are being distributed for the Linden Hall fund raiser.

In the absence of Mary Alice Langlotz, FAC, President Engelke reported the volleyball tournament is scheduled for November 15 and that he hoped Lodge 66 would have a winning team.

He expressed his appreciation to everyone for coming out for the Youth Achievement Day. New members accepted were Megan Danielle Heussner, Reagan Kent Uptmore, and Mary Louise and Tim L. Urbanek, additional policies. We welcome each of you to Lodge 66.

Garage, Craft Sale is September 20 There was a lengthy discussion on plans for the Linden Hall fund raiser to be held on Saturday, September 20, 1997, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lodge 66 in Elm Mott. There will be a garage and craft sale and a quilt show and sale.

There will be games, bingo, baby sitting and food Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

Emma Ceska, for the Cheer and Condolence Committee, reported getwell cards were sent to Charlie and Irene Mueller, Alfred R. Pankonien, Teresa Narovec Norwood, and Ruby Orsag. We wish them all a speedy recovery.

Lodge 48, Beyersville Hosts Pokorny - Polanka Tarok Tournament The 3rd Annual Pokorny --Polanka Tarok Tournament, sponsored by SPJST Lodge No. 48, Beyersville, was held at the Volunteer Fire Department Hall in Thrall, Texas on Saturday, July 25, 1997.

According to Bobby Wunesche, organizer for the tournament, the Tarok Tournament is held annually inconjunction with the Pokorny - Polanka Family Reunion. "Some of our family members from California only get this one time a year to play Taroks," states Bobby.

According to Bobby, the family weekend starts on Saturday morning with golf, then the Tarok Tournament in the afternoon with the finale being the reunion held on Sunday. The tournament is open to anyone who wants to engage in tournament play, and SPJST members as far away as . Fort Worth drive down to enjoy the day. "We wanted to get out of town," says Helen Kubala, of Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

"This tournament provided us the opportunity to get away for the weekend and enjoy a day of playing Taroks."

Bobby and his wife, Ruth Ann, were kind enough to invite me to play in the tournament, which I really appreciate.

There's nothing like walking a mile in a Tarok player's shoes to understand where they are coming from. Even though I enjoyed the game and have played previously, I had never played in a tournament. I wondered how the players could sit for so long playing Taroks. Now I know, the time flies past and it's a lot of fun to engage a different variety of players each round of play.

By the end of the day, my head was so full of well-intended advice on the game, that my eyeballs were'swimming! Like the game of life, with Taroks, I found that every player has a different way of playing the hand that's dealt them. It seems there are generational similarities with players though.

I've found that the "No fear" generation of Tarok players play their hands like wildfire, slapping down cards, taking big chances and working their partners' brains to the edge of brain burn. The older, wiser players, on the other hand, usually play carefully, know their business and when dealt a good hand, play it straight to the end.

Four one hour-and-fifteen-minute rounds of Taroky started at 2 p.m. in the historical Thrall Fire Hall in Thrall, Texas. Paul Schlesinger from Taylor scored high in the first round with 289 points, the highest round score of the day. Paul maintained good scores the remainder of the day and took Overall First place. Following this trend, Allen Tschoener of Schwertner, Texas, scored high in Round Two, with 191 points and took Overall Second place. Also playing strong was Herman Hanzlicek from Fort Worth. Herman took high round score in Round Three with 264

points and remained in third place for an Overall Third place win. Ruth Ann Wuensche of Taylor, won high round in the last round of the day with 217 points. (Good for you, Ruth Ann).

The following players took first through fourth place prizes at the Pokorny-Polanka Tarok Tournament sponsored by Lodge 48:

4 YOUNG OBSERVER — Bret Wuensche, grandson on Bobby and Ruth Wuensche, sat in on the day's activities.

Special thanks to Leona Stalmach, President of Lodge 48, Beyersville, Ruth Ann and Bobby Wuensche, Denisse Wuensche and Linda Stork for providing the volunteer assistance and for organizing the tournament.

Members from Beyersville and Taylor provided a wonderful lunch of barbecued chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, fresh yellow watermelons and garden vegetables, tea, kolaches and tasty desserts. Bobby saw to it that all the players received a door prize before departing for the night. The door prizes ranged from watermelons to lotto tickets, to nice photo frames.

To all of you on the verge but reluctant to go over the edge and start competing in Tarok Tournaments, I urge you to take the plunge. The only way to do it is to jump in feet first like the Wuensches gave me the opportunity to do. It's fun!

10/VESTNIK—Wednesday, September 3, 1997 are working on plans to participate in the Westfest parade. They have delivered flyers for the fund raiser. They will attend a workshop in Temple on August 23, then come back to Linden Hall to help volunteer at the MDA fund raiser.

They will work on games at the fund raiser on September 20.

August birthday celebrants, present were Gladys Pustejovsky, Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr., Dorothy Veselka, and Gloria Locke. They were presented a beautiful birthday cake as all members joined in the "Happy Birthday" song.

Darlene Engelke was the winner in the 50-50 club and Tim Urbanek won the door prize.

Following the meeting, a delicious meal and visiting was enjoyed by all.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, September 21 at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall. Please try to attend. Also, we need to remind all members that help is needed, and if you can arrange your time to come out and help during the fund raiser on September 20, on Saturday, it would be greatly appreciated by those serving on the various committees. Dear Members, Prior to President Yeager calling our meeting to order, our visitor from the Home Office Barbara Rosenkranz presented Brother Ben Jarma his 50-year

Secretary Salac read the minutes and correspondence. President Yeager then introduced our guest, Barbara Rosenkranz, who gave an inspiring talk about the many ways our society is changing and the desire to be a part of this change in convincing our younger members to get acquainted with what is offered and enjoy being a part of a group by participating in its activities. Sister Barbara will be visiting your lodge; enjoy the enthusiasm she brings.

In the absence of our Sunshine Committee, Brother Ben Jarma gave the report. Get-well cards were sent to Sister Wanda Petr and Brothers Emil Petr and Jody Rejcek and sympathy cards were sent to the Huff Family and the Rejcek Family on the loss of Louis Veselka. We extend sincere sympathy. May your loved ones rest in peace.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported a great time at Camp Val Verde. Brother Sid Pokladnik visited and enjoyed one whole day. District Three Director John Krizan also came by several evenings.

She reported the temperature climbed but all the youth ignored the degrees and just had fun.

House Committee Chairman Adolph Salac once again had to mop water that keeps creeping into the conference room also. He had to make a trip to turn the air conditioner on and check the beverage coolers. Thank you!

President Yeager thanked Brother Randy and Sister Rose Scott for the lodge trim. The beautiful rain last week gave us several cool days but also made the hedge and grass spring up.

On September 20, Country Outlaw plays for dancing; October 4 is the Jody Milcula Orchestra; and October 18 is the Henry Rejcek Orchestra.

Don't forget our Czech Fest is September 7, and our next lodge meeting is September 22.

84, Dallas Invites Everyone to Czech Fest on September 7

Dear Members and Friends, Sunday, September 7 is coming soon.

We invite you to our 26th Annual Czech Fest. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and a real Czech dinner will be catered by Bessie Petr, starting at 12:30 p.m. It will be pork roast, dumplings, sauerkraut, salad, green beans, rolls, desserts, coffee and tea. The price will be $6.50 per adult and $3.50 per child (ages 12 and under).

The various fun booths will be the country store, gift shop, pastry table, the popular cake walk and others. Donations will be much appreciated—such as groceries, paper goods, for the Teen Country Store, the gift booth items can be old or new and especially home-canned goods.

We need pastry for the booth and also our dinner. The cake walk needs your favorite cake. Everyone has been so generous in the past—so let's do it again.

There will be a free dance at 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and music will be by the Rejcek Polka Band. Everyone is invited make plans to come. We hope to see a lot of

the Polka A Club.

Drawing for 26 prizes listed on the tickets we sent to our members will be Hone several times during the afternoon.

88, Houston Presents August 11 Meeting Minutes Lodge

President Clara Broz opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. and Johnny Broz, Leander Pflughaupt, and King Hegwood presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Names of four deceased members were read. Minutes were read and approved. Correspondence was read and nine new applicants were approved with two transfers into Lodge 88 and nine transfers out of Lodge 88.

President Broz recognized Gene McBride, our State Field Representative, and his wife Francis from Temple. He took to the podium and informed the members he will be giving FIC tests to the sales representatives who have completed the course. He also reported District Five sales are down and asked for help in getting new members. He said he will be making frequent visits to our area to stimulate new growth and needs everyone's help in making this successful.

Officers' Reports President Clara Broz reported the plans for Czech Day on October 26 set.

A dinner of turkey, dressing and ham and all trimmings will be served at 11 a.m. until ?. The cost for adults is $6 per person and children under 12 is $4.50 per person. The Birthday Club will handle pastry and coffee. The Choral Group and Concert Orchestra will perform. Lee Roy Matocha plays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Donnie Wavra plays from 5 to 9 p.m. in the ballroom. A dinner ticket entitles you to dance, otherwise the dance will be $3.

Committees will be contacted by Dorothy Pflughaupt to work the booths. The officers will have a quilt raffle; the youth will have a silent auction; Johnny Broz and Larry Pflughaupt will have a live auction; the Men's Club will have a donation; and Jeanette Bender will call for help in the kitchen. The Executive Board Meeting is set for September 16 at 7:30 p.m. A reminder that nominations for Fraternalist of the Year are due at the September meeting.

First Vice President Marie Stayton requested the Choral Group to carry flags in September. She then read a humorous poem submitted by Johnny Broz.

Second Vice President Tillie Helmcamp welcomed Gene McBride and asked members for news to publish in the Vestnik.

Secretary-Treasurer Melanie Spies read the Consolidated Income Statement for July.

Wednesday, September 3, 1997—VESTNIK/11 FAC Larry Pflughaupt reported eyeglasses and clothing were being collected.

Committee Reports Audit Committee—Marceil Malek reported the books for May and June were found to be in order.

Board of Trustees—Willie Wehring reported air ducts in the office and halls are to be cleaned. The floor problem is being addressed. The workers party is set for September 28. Committees are asked to have their list to the office by September 2, 1997. Donnie Wavra will furnish the music.

Social Night—Chairman Willie Wehring reported everything was going well on Thursday nights.

Blueroom—Dorothy Pflughaupt reported a Blue Room party was set for August 17. She also informed the members she will be calling on the committees for help on Czech Day. Birthday Club Sisters—Kathy Trefell reported invitations are out for lunch on the first and second Wednesday of each month. They have bingo, card games and other activities, so come join the fun.

Choral Club—Gene Barcek reported they will sing at the Leiderkranz on August 18 and will start practicing for Czech Day. Rules and Regulations Gene Barcak stated for members to start reviewing any changes you want and submit them to a committee member. These changes will be presented at the October meeting.

District Five Director Louis Hanus requested anyone not receiving the Vestnik to please let him know. Interest rates are published each week in the Vestnik. Incentive Program results for District Five are three lodges qualifying. last year, we were over our quota; however, this year we are a little behind.

Report from the Director's Meeting— Discussion on automobile replacement was tabled pending additional data.

Discussion of two lots in Temple purchased for a museum to be built next to the Home Office. Presently all the artifacts are displayed in the basement.

SPJST has a commitment to make Temple a Czech Culture Center. AM Best Audit Report again rated SPJST A(Excellent). Also an appeal to all on attending the District Five meeting on September 21; this being the 100th Anniversary, we should all try to attend.

District Five President Evelyn Mikeska reported the District Five Family Day is scheduled for September 21 in Crosby. Registration is at 11 a.m.

District Five will furnish the barbecue and everyone is asked to bring a covered dish for trimmings. This year, we have added dominos and bingo, so we are asking for prize donations. More details will be published in the Vestnik.

District Five Youth Counselor Marie Stayton reported the youth will have the Christmas ornament contest at the District Five Family Day. She emphasized the family in Family Day and asked all to join the fun as a family unit.

District Five Fun Day will be at Crosby American Legion Hall at Crosby on September 21 with the two Crosby Lodges 91 and 65 hosting. The district will furnish the meat and members can bring a covered dish or pastry. Be sure to circle September 21 on your calendar; you don't want to miss this! There will be activities for everybody!

I will be reminding you from now on about the great day coming up—Czech Day Celebration on October 26 with a tasty dinner of turkey and dressing and ham with the trimmings. There will be Lodge 88 Choral Club and Concert Orchestra at noon, Lee Roy Matocha from 1 to 4:40 p.m. and Donnie Wavra from 5 to 9 p.m. with the Parade of Costumes starting at 5:15 p.m. If you purchase a dinner ticket, then you can dance free all afternoon!

Gene McBride and his loS/ely wife gave the lodge a pleasant surprise when they came to our lodge meeting. Gene, who had classes around here the next day, made a brief but informative speech which we enjoyed.

Helen Hegwood announced that Marian Kadlecek was the winner in July insurance sales and presented her with a check. She presented diamond pins and congratulated the "Million Dollar" sales people: Helen Hegwood, Victor Janak, Edna Wehring, and Evelyn Mikeska.

Gladys and Richard Smallwood and friends Ruth and Victor Surovec had a most delightful trip to Branson, Missouri, where they saw several good shows, took a trip on the Branson Belle Show Boat, danced on the Bobby Vintons Theatre stage, and visited the Precious Moments Chapel.

Ann Urbanovsky is improving after her major back surgery and was able to go home. We hope it won't be long before she can be with us. Czech Heritage Day at Lodge 92, Fort Worth is Saturday, September 20, 1997, at National Hall, located at 3316 Roberts Cutoff Road in Fort Worth.

Activities begin at 11 a.m. with accordionists. The Memory Makers Czech Choir will perform at 12 noon, followed by the German Dancers of Garland at 12:30 p.m. The opening ceremony is at 1:10 p.m. The Vrazels of Cameron will play music from 2 to 6 p.m. The Parade of Czech Costumes is at 6:10 p.m. The exhibition by Sokol Fort Worth is at 6:40 p.m. followed by the Alpine Dancers of Dallas at 7:20 p.m. The Jodie Mikula Orchestra of Ennis will play music from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Several prizes will be given in the building fund raffle. Hubenak's Hamburgers will be served. The Ladies Czech Circle will sponsor the pastry sales booth.

Lodge 133 held its regular meeting on Sunday, August 17 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio.

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m.

Lodge 172, Pasadena Hosts Gulf Coast Czech Festival Third Weekend in October As always, the Gulf Coast Czech Festival will be held on the third weekend of October. We have always used the same date and don't change dates as some other events do.

This event as always will be held at Lodge 172, Pasadena on Sunday, October 19 with a country/western and polka/waltz dance on Saturday night from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. with music by the Kountry Knights.

Sunday will be a full day of Czech music, singing and food. Entertainers will be from Nebraska and singers and dancers from Louisiana, also. More details later.

Julia Sefcik was reported as being ill.

We wish her a speedy recovery. Viola Kurtz thanked members for the cards and phone calls she received from members while she was ill.

Congratulations to Sister Evelyn Matula who was selected as Fraternalist of the Year. The hard work and dedication that she continues to give to our lodge each year is greatly appreciated.

Reports on August Meeting Dear Members, It is hard to believe August is already among us. School has already begun or is about to begin for our young members.

I sure hope a lot of our young members and adults got to experience summer camp this year.

Reports on August Meeting

College Station Celebrates 20th Anniversary on. September 14

The August meeting was called to order by President Hutka followed with the pledge to the flag. He recognized the guests who were District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and his wife, Irma, and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz. Barbara is a member of Lodge 177, Academy.

Brother Klinkovsky talked to the members regarding things that are going on statewide. Cookbook sales were tremendous and a large donation was made to Ronald McDonald House. It was fun listening to him tell us about visiting one lodge where a lady was teaching the youth to make kolaches from scratch.

Our mouths were watering by the time he finished.

Sister Rosenkranz said she was happy to be back in her home lodge and told us what a difference the lodge had made in her life by giving her the opportunity to grow through leadership. Academy Lodge 177 is a center of fond growing-up memories for thousands of youth in this area of Texas.

Sunshine Chair Libby Bartek reported no current illnesses. She sent a card to Kathy Fritz last month.

Minutes were read and approved. A Certificate of Appreciation was received from Academy High School Project Graduation.

All committee chair reports were given. Trustees reported the border tiles around the dance floor will be replaced.

FAC Joanne Hutka presented anniversary mugs to the following birthday folks: Louis Driska, Ann Mason, Joanne Hutka, Linda Johnson, Helen Bland, and Shirley McCrea.

The audit committee gave its report.

All books were in order. Good work, committee chairs. Your work is appreciated. Thank you, audit committee.

Reports on August Meeting The Circle met on August 14, 1997.

There were 28 members and four guests present. Our guests were Libbie Pavelka, Charlie Kosarek, Charlie Ellevan and Jerry Kohn.

President Sadie Kuban called the

meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Leslie Bouska and Annie Martinek. Leslie was the brother of Sister Mary Patak and the uncle of Sister Ella Zmolek. Annie was an aunt of Sister Linda Trojacek. Our sincere sympathy is expressed to the bereaved families.

Assistant Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read and took the minutes. Treasurer Lillie Kosarek gave the financial report.

Both reports were approved as read.

Lillie Kosarek thanked Sister Libbie Vrla for taking care of her duties at the July meeting.

The Sunshine report was presented by Sister Eleanor Pelzel; a get-well card was sent to Sisters Alene Skrivanek, who had knee surgery, Emilie Harrison, who had surgery on her shoulder, Vojteska Janicek, who was hospitalized for pneumonia, and Charles Kosarek, who had back surgery.

We wish for each one a speedy recovery.

Charles Kosarek is doing fine. He attended our meeting. Sisters Mary Polasek and Adell Vlk did not feel too well. A speedy recovery is wished for them also.

Sister Mary Sebestik and Adell Vlk sent their regards.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the August birthday celebrants.

A quilt was quilted for Sister Bessie I a7novsky.

Sister Dorothy Prachyl donated sugar and Sister Frances Sparks brought a few more items for the white elephant sale that was held in July. They sold fast.

Sister Rosie Bednar brought the door prize. The lucky winner was Betty Steagall.

Sister Anne Zvolanek celebrated her birthday at Sister Georgia Tupy's home after the meeting. I won't tell her age.

However, I will tell this much. She was born ten years before I was born.

A new Czech music program started about two weeks ago on radio station KNON 89.3 FM in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. The music is great. There is no advertising. They do accept donations to help this program to continue. The frequency does not reach some parts of Dallas; that is rather disappointing to many listeners.

Penny, a long-time pet of Sister Liz and Erben Crone, died recently. They will miss her. Sister Libbie Wisniewski's dog, Lucky, was pictured in the Ennis Daily News "Pets on Parade," along with many other cute pets.

Carolyn Liu of Bayside, New York, visited her mother, Sister Doris Foit, in West, Texas. Carolyn is a school teacher.

Our next meeting will be September 11. See you then.

John Wilson is the new resident to join S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville, Texas, in the month of July.

We regret the death of Charolette Hedt. She will be missed by our staff and residents.

In Memoriam In Memory of Stanley L. Januszewski Stanley L. Januszewski, 70, of Brenham, and the husband of Mary Ann Zientek Januszewski, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at 10:31 p.m. at the family residence.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 5, 1997, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Brenham with Monsignors Benedict Zientek, Boleslaus Zientek and Ralph Brennan and Deacons William Januszewski and David Williams officiating.

Interment was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

A rosary was recited Friday, July 4, 1997, at 7 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel.

The family received friends and relatives Friday, July 4, 1997, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Januszewski was born Janaury 12, 1927, in the Mill Creek Community, Washington County, the son of Joe and Mary (Cendalski) Januszewski.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Mr. Januszewski attended Hohenwalde and Mill Creek Schools.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater.

On October 22, 1960, he was married to Mary Ann Zientek at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Brenham.

Mr. Januszewski was self-employed for many years and then worked at R.B. Butler for 23 years until his retirement in 1988. After his retirement, he enjoyed working on his farm.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, SPJST Lodge 169, Brenham and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Zientek Januszewski of Brenham; mother, Mrs. Joe Zanuszewski of Brenham; son, Mark Januszewski and his special friend Jennifer Esquivel of Brenham; daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine and Steven Newsom of Houston, Cynthia and John Longhofer of Brenham and Patricia and Mark Watson of Dallas; grandchildren, Kyle and Ryan Januszewski and Mary Kate and Schuyler Newsom; brothers, John Januszewski, William

Januszewski and Ray Januszewski, all of Brenham; sisters, Stella Kubitza of Burton and Monica Krenek of Wallis; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Janie Gorzycki.

Pallbearers were friends and family members.

Members of the Knights of Columbus and ushers of St. Mary's were considered honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be given to St. Mary's Catholic Church or to a favorite charity.

She was preceded in death by her husband Simon Fajkus; her parents, Cyril and Emma Chudej Sykora; sister Virginia Bohacek; and brother Daniel Sykora.

Mrs. Fajkus is survived by sons, Carroll Fajkus and his wife, Sam, of Rosenerg, Rodney Fajkus and his wife, Susan, of Katy; sisters, Marline Walzel and her husband, Eddie, of Beasley, Georgeanne Lindmann of Needville; brothers, Alvin Skykora and his wife, Judi, of Rosenberg, Johnny Sykora and his wife, Barbara, of Richmond, Larry Sykora and his wife, Shirley, of Rosenberg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden, No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother, STEVE ANDRLE of Waco, Texas, who died Monday, June 30, 1997, in Athens, Texas.

Services took place at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Thursday, July 3 and rosary was recited on Wednesday, July 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Wilkerson-Hatch Chapel.

The Rev. Timothy Vaverek officiated.

Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Penelope, Texas.

Brother Steve was born in Runnels County, Texas. He attended Griffin School. He married Julia Dolezel in 1930 in Penelope, Texas. She preceded him in death in November, 1986. Brother Steve was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a member of SPJST Lodge 66 since February, 1934.

Survivors include a daughter, Julia Ann Andrle of Waco; two sons, Steve Gilbert Andrie of Athens and Charles Edmond Andrie of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

We, the officers and the entire membership of the Bleiblerville-Nelsonille Lodge 201, express our sympathy to the families of our departed sister, MARY ANN (ZETIEL) KING, who died on June 18, 1997, in Nelsonville at the age of 47 years.

Funeral services were held from the Nelsonville Brethren Church with the Rev. Michael Groseclose officiating.

She was born on October 7, 1949, in Bellville, Texas, to parents Charlie and Vlasta (Shupak) Zettel. Mary Ann grew up in Nelsonville and attended school in Bellville where she graduated. She also graduated from Sam Houston State where she received her teaching degree in English.

She is survived by her mother, Vlasta Zettel of Nelsonville; daughters, Angela King of Houston, Susie and husband, Roy Bimer of Motgomery; son Reinhold Carl King IV of San Antonio; one sister, Janell Zettel of Nelsonville; one brother, Jimmy Zettel and wife, Sandie, of Brenham; two grandchildren; and two nephews.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Zettel.

Funeral srevices were under the direction of the Knesek Brothers/Etlinger Fuenral Chapel of Bellville.

Memory of Frank Roland Hruska

Funeral services for Frank Roland Hruska, 88, longtime businessman of Ellinger, were held Saturday, June 14, 1997, at 10 a.m. in the Fayetteville Brethren Church with the Rev. Michael Groseclose officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Hruska died June 12, 1997, in Stonebridge Health Center in Austin.

Born in Ross Prairie near Fayetteville on December 18, 1908, Mr. Hruska was the son of the late Frank R. and Louise (Mikeska) Hruska. He was united in marriage with Bessie Emily Walla on June 18, 1940, in Caldwell. Mr. Hruska was the owner of the Hruska Store in Ellinger for many years. He was a member of the Fayetteville Brethren Church, the Fayetteville Masonic Lodge, and the Hermann Sons.

Mr. Hruska was a faithful member of SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger.

Surviving are one daughter, Karen J. Knickerbocker of La Grange; one son and daughter-in-law, Franklin R. and Robbie J. Hruska of Austin; one brother, Gus L. Hruska of Ellinger; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife.

Memorials are suggested to the Fayetteville Brethren Church.

Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Palousek was a Temple businessman for 39 years, owning and operating Palousek (formerly Crawford) Overhead Door. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 20 years, where he was on the church's board of trustees and was an usher. He was a member of Temple Area Homebuilders.

The family received friends on Wednesday, June 11 at Jenkins Funeral Chapel. There was a mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, June 12 at 10 a.m. in St. Ladislas Church in Westlake, Ohio, followed by interment in Holy Cross Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were by Jenkins Funeral Home in Westlake.

She was born August 5, 1920. She joined SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi on November 9, 1969. She was a frequent visitor in Corpus Christi and will be missed.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, Charles L. Varro; two daughters, Karen (R. Bruce) Budinger, Jeanne (Bruce) Krogman; one son, Donald C. Varro; six beloved grandchildren, Ivan, Nichole, Chelsea, Alex, Brice, Donnie; two sisters, Milly (Jerry) Elzner of Corpus Christi and Bernice Stanish; two brothers, Bruno and Edward Florek; and one sister-in-law, Ida R. Chirozza.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Koszewski.

Sister Parma was born on December 5, 1929, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was a telephone and radio operator for many years. She became an SPJST member on June 5, 1958.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus "Mark" Parma, on July 18, 1983.

Her survivors are one daughter, Sharon Parma; one son, Glen Parma of Bastrop; three grandchildren; and one brother, John Barton of Missouri City.

Brother Jurcik was born July 4, 1916, in Creechville, the son of Lewis A. and Ann Krietzer Jurcik. He was reared in Creechville and attended Village Creek Schools. On October 21, 1941, he was married to Anna V. Jaska. After their marriage they lived in and around Ennis.

Brother Jurcik was a member of the St. Frances Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge 135, and the WFLA. He is survived by his wife of Wilmer; two brothers, Charles A. Jurcik of Creechville and Victor R. Jurcik of Russellville, Arkansas; four sisters, Bertha Janicek and Annie Mullins of Ennis, Libbie Slovak of Farmers Branch, and Vlasta Childress of Breckenridge; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services for Brother Jurcik were held at 2 p.m. July 10 in the Keever Chapel with the Rev. Raul Garza of Ferris officiating. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary. Pallbearers were Stuart Hamilton, Charlie Jurcik, Ralph Shotwell, Joe Htemer, Michael Snapka, and Larry Jakubik.

He was born December 20, 1937, in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was a graduate of Texas A&M University, receiving his degree in electrical engineering. He also received his master's degree in business administration from Golden Gate University. He was a member of the ROTC while at Texas A&M. He entered the Army and obtained the rank of first lieutenant prior to his discharge.

He worked with United Technologies Chemical System for 34 years as an engineer and presently as launch base manager.

He was a member of St. Louis de Montfort Church, Elks Lodge No. 1538 and Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Elaine Prochaska of Santa Maria; daughter Rhoda Prochaska of Santa Maria; stepmother, Bessie Prochaska of Fort Worth, Texas; and brothers Frank Prochaska of Azle, Texas, Bud Prochaska of Arlington, Texas, and Ernie Prochaska of College Station, Texas.

In Memory of Georgia Bessie Kind Georgia Bessie Kind, 79, of Taylor, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, at the Pflugerville Care Center.

Mrs. Kind was a lifetime resident of the Taylor area. She worked at Bilmar Bakery as a clerk for 11 years. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor and Taylor Brethren Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Frank Kind, in 1988.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty Jennings and husband Gary of Pflugerville, Helen Bunch and husband Harold of Georgetown, Ruth Caskey and husband Johnnie of Florence; two sisters, Anna Sladek of Taylor and Ruby Lange and husband Marvin of Noack; two brothers, Frank Tucek and wife Marietta of Taylor and Jerome Tucek and wife Yvonne of Round Rock; five grandchildren, Rick Watson, Misty Bunch, Danielle and Matthew Caskey and Kim Jennings; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Tanner Watson.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m Thursday, July 24, 1997, at Condra Memorial Chapel in Taylor with the Rev. Roy Smith officiating. Interment was in Taylor City Cemetery.

Reunions Kulhanek Family Reunion The 25th Kulhanek Reunion of the descendants of Antonin and Celestina Kulhanek will be held on Sunday, September 21, 1997. It will be held at St. Peter and Paul Dining Hall in Frelsberg and will be held in memory of the three men who had the idea to have a reunion many years ago. They are Leonard Kulhanek, Bill Kovar, and Albert Kulhanek. This year, the Joseph Kulhanek Family will host the reunion.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m.

Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch. Plates, napkins, forks, knives, bread, coffee, tea, and ice will be furnished. Home-baked goods, homecanned goods, crafts, or any item you bring will be especially nice for a door prize or money-making project. We also need prizes for our children. Please wrap them and label as "boy" or "girl" and the age. Let's all work together to make this the best reunion thus far.

Charbula Family Reunion The Third Charbula Family Reunion is September 28, 1997, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Mary's Parish Hall at St. Mary's Catholic Church, located on FM 340 off 90A (1.6 miles off 90A) in Hallettsville, Texas.

A covered dish meal will be served.

Please bring enough for your family.

Coffee and tea will be furnished. Bring your own beer and soda water, etc.

A table will be set up to put family pictures, etc. on.

Jr., Elsie Schmidt, Mildred Novak, Charles Euton, and John McCormick came to have sing-along. Thanks also to all the rest who came along and helped out.

Every Tuesday morning, Frank Ramos came to have Bible study. In the afternoon, Tonie Kramer and her group came to have bingo.

Every Wednesday morning, different churches came to have services for the residents.

Every Thursday morning, Father Ramsey, Milton Legendre, and Annie Stavinoha with St. Michael's Catholic Church came to have mass. In the afternoon, the Catholic, Methodist, Immanuel and Damon Baptist ladies took turns coming to have crafts.

Every Friday afternoon, Mildred Novak came to help roll residents' hair.

The Immanuel United Church of Christ Women's Guild made bibs for the residents. This is greatly appreciated.

On Thursday afternoon, July 17, Garland Huryta and Mary Ann Goffinet brought pets for pet therapy.

On Thursday evening, July 17, the Polka Lovers Club came to dance for the residents.

On Monday evening, July 21, Ed Pisklak provided music on the accordion.

The birthday party was held on Friday afternoon, July 25. Music was provided

by Louis Vacek on the piano and accordion. Corsages were donated by "A Flower and Gift Shop." The First English Lutheran Church provided the cakes. Birthdays for the month of July were for residents Edmund Brande, Emma Bremer, Mary Spezia, Lillie Steffek, Viola Till, Louise Kadlecek, Matilda Slacalek, and William Cranek, and staff, Anna Chavez and Kim Kolojaco.

On Tuesday evening, July 29, Larry Ognoski, George Lolley, and Fritz Koehne provided music and singing.

On Thursday morning, July 31, A Special Place Day Care came to sing for the residents. The residents really enjoyed the children.

Heritage Day Sunday, October 26 Bexar County Czech Heritage Day is Sunday, October 26, 1997, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 5721 Rigsby in San Antonio, Texas. Dear Readers, Lodge 4, Hallettsville held their annual Family Day on August 10, 1997, at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville.

Our youth club had a cake walk, and we played bingo after the meeting. Howard Leshikar, Matt Vanek and Jim Wiest were among the speakers who attended. The youth club displayed their crafts from state and also performed their talent. I gave my Queen speech to the members of my lodge for the first time after district and state competition. They all enjoyed it. (I think!)

Our next youth club meeting will be September 7, 1997.

We talked some about the then upcoming District Two trip to Six Flags, too. Since the meeting, we have all returned safely from Six Flags and everybody had a great time. Dear Readers, On August 2, 1997, I was crowned your 1997-98 State Queen. I was excited and shocked all at the same time. It was as if a dream came true. I hope that I will represent the SPJST as well as the past State Queens. I am looking forward to all the appearances I will have to make. I know that I will meet a lot of new people from around the state.

I would like to thank District Six and Lodge 4, Hallettsville for all of their support. They gave me confidence that I needed, and the courage to do my best. I know that for Lodge 4, I am their first State Queen. I hope that I represent them as well as I represent the State.

Church Schedules Czech Hymns Concert A new work for organ and instruments, "Czech Choral Suite," composed by Joseph Bertolozzi will receive its premiere at a concert to be given by organist Marjorie Rasche on Thursday, September 11, 1997, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Christopher Church, 8150 Park Place in Houston.

"Czech Chorale Suite" is a four-movement work based on Czech hymns from the liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. Each movement adds one more instrument until all four (flute, oboe, violin, and trumpet) are heard in the final section. Organist Joseph Bertolozzi has also composed original works for the Hudson Valley Philharmonic Alternative Music Series, and the choirs and orchestra of the State University of New York at Paltz. He resides with his family in Beacon, New York.

Marjorie Rasche was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship and studied with Flor Peeters at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp, Belgium. There she was awarded the First Prize with Distinction in organ and the J. Callaerts Prize, and she was a winner in the International Bach Concours. Mrs. Rasche is the organist of Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church in Galveston.

CCC Presents "A Night of Czech Music" The Czech Cultural Center Houston presents A Night of Czech Music, Dinner and Auction II on Saturday, September 20, 1997, at the Ramada Plaza Hotel, located at 12801 Northwest Freeway (US 290) at Pinemont in Houston. The evening's repertoire begins at 6 p.m. and includes a band of accordion sounds and songs, children from the Southwest Suzuki School of violins, Rod Waters at the piano playing Czech composers, SPJST Lodge 88 Singers accompanied by Carolyn Filipp, who will also play the songs of the Beseda. The live auction and raffle features unique items, most made in the Czech Republic. Spirited bidding will include two tickets to Prague, courtesy of Czech Airlines. All proceeds from this fund raiser go toward the building of a permanent facility to celebrate the culture, language, scholarship, and the arts of Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia, and Silesia and to fund educational scholarships. The permanent building is planned to have a museum, concert hall, art gallery, meeting rooms and a welcome and information center. The Czech Cultural Center is a 501 (cX3) non-profit educational cultural organization established March 8, 1996.

CCC Hosts Czech Educator The Czech Cultural Center Houston was privileged to present Sunday, August 17, 1997, from 2 to 3 p.m. Mgr. Helena Hronova, historian and educator from the Institute of Languages in Prague. She presented a video, The Legends of Prague, with commentary and entertained audience participation to a filled-to-capacity meeting room at the Northwest Mall.

Ms. Hronova from Dobrichovice, a suburb of Prague, is the house guest of CCC member Joyce Stevens and husband Jim Stryker. Joyce met Helena's husband, Milan, last year in Prague. Milan works in the Head Office of Civic Protection, Ministry of Defense. Joyce, a member of the Texas Army National Guard went to Prague representing the Guard in a program called the "Partnership for Peace," established by President Clinton several years ago. The idea was to match former soviet block countries with state national guards. Texas was matched with the Czech Republic because of the high population of persons of Czech heritage in the state.

Guests were invited for refreshments and a tour of the recently opened on July 15, 1997, CCC Market Place in Northwest Mall in Houston. A unique gift shop/collectibles boutique'of fine Czech made products, the shop features primarily fine art and gifts from crystal chandeliers through glass, porcelain, pottery, jewelry, ornaments, books and toys. Totally operated by volunteers, under management of Danna Ermis, Gift Shop Chairman, proceeds go toward building a permanent facility to house a museum, concert hall, art galleries, teaching rooms, library, genealogy and archives and a scholarship fund.

The program is a series of continuing education on Czech culture and heritage to members and the community at large. The Czech Community Center is a 501 (cX3) non-profit educational culture organization established March 8, 1996.
