Lodges embrace the values of outdoor recreation

SPJST golf tournaments popularity growing The physical values of outdoor recreation include the benefits of exercise, development of endurance, and increase in cardio-muscular function. With the increase in strength and endurance comes energy, an increase in muscle tone, an increase in the flow of oxygen to the brain, and a general feeling of wellbeing. —Dr Phyllis Ford Outdoor Pursuits

Since World War II, the quantity of out-of-doors activities has increased astonishingly. In short, millions are moving across the land and water seeking enjoyment through physical exercise in a variety of settings --especially golf courses. Current estimates indicate that approximately 30 mil lion Americans play the sport. In an effort to capitalize on this enjoyable leisure-time activity, two SPJST lodges will be hosting tournaments in coming weeks. Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station will sponsor its second annual tournament on Sunday, August 17 and Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga hosts its first golf tournament on Saturday, August 23. Both tournaments come on the heels of the SPJST's 100th Anniversary Golf Tournament which took place on July 12 at Sammons Golf Course in Temple. "That was a huge success," says Home

Office Investment Data Specialist Daryl Entrop, who coordinated the event with the assistance of State Field Manager Keith Gatewood. "In all, there were some 108 golfers taking aim at this most coveted title — as well as at a chance to win a new 1997 convertible," said Mr. Entrop. Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station will be hosting its tournament on behalf of the Normangee Volunteer Emergency Medical Services, according to project coordinator Larry Wentrcek. The August 17 tournament is a two-person scramble with a shot gun start at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $40 per person. More than $800 in cash prizes will be awarded. "It's a beautiful and challenging course in a rural setting," said Mr. Wentrcek. "I can assure all of our golfers that they'll be in for a very pleasant surprise. The course is located in Leon County, nine miles northwest of Normangee on Highway 3. To participate in the tournament, golfers are asked to contact Darren or Mona at the Hilltop Lakes Golf Course Pro Shop at (409) 855-2100 or Mr. Wentrcek at (409) 822-4226. The Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga golf tournament will take place on August 23 at the Plantation Golf Club. The format is a four-person Florida scramble and the entry fee is $300 per team. A total of

Apart from the physical value of outdoor recreation, activities such as golf provide players with an enjoyable outlet for social interaction. Lodge 5, Pilot Point - Tioga and Lodge 189, Bryan - College Station both host tournaments in August. $1,800 in prizes will be awarded. As an added bonus, a car will be awarded to any player making a hole-in-one on the 16th hole. To participate in the Lodge 5 tournament, players are asked to contact David Fuller c/o PointBank at (817) 686-5500 FAX: (817) 686-5536 at their earliest convenience. All entry fees must be paid in full by August 15.

"We believe we're opening up new avenues for interaction with our members and prospective members," said Mr. Wentrcek. Referring to last year's tournament, he noted that, "A lot of our active members — some who had never been out on a golf course — helped out with the event and had a great time with it. That was good to see." —SPJST-
