No Time Like the Present If it's been a while since you bought life insurance, you may be in for a surprise - a pleasant surprise. The cost per thousand dollars worth of coverage has decreased considerably from where it was just a few years ago. In evaluating my family's needs, SPJST's Modterm Program looked especially attractive.

Since it was first introduced in the fall of 1994, SPJST's Modterm - short for "modified term" insurance has been one of SPJST's most popular insurance programs. In a nutshell, Modterm coverage offers the purchaser a 10- or 20-year renewable term certificate. The 10-year term carries with it a unique "original age enhancement option." It's meant to appeal to people between the ages of 20 and 70 who want a lot of insurance for a little bit of money.

The age enhancement option allows the certificate holder to double his or her coverage at any time between the second and ninth year of the Modterm issue date at the original urn rate.

For example, let's say that you purchase a $100,000 10-year Modterm certificate in 1997. Then, in 2008, you decide that you would like to double that amount to $200,000. You can do it at the 1997 premium rate.

Another feature of both the 10-year and 20-year Modterm certificate is that at the end of the term, the certificate is automatically renewable without having to demonstrate proof of insurability. The new rate will be based on your age at the time your certificate is renewed.

The Modterm certificate provides an easy and cost effective way for business people or families to increase their coverage as their business grows or their financial obligations increase.

In actuality, term coverage is nothing new for SPJST. The big difference is its greater affordability. Three factors account for the lower price per thousand of coverage: increased competition within the insurance industry, improved mortality rates and more efficient serving costs. Both 10-year and 20-year Modterm insurance can be purchased in varying amounts to fit your special

needs. The minimum certificate value is $25,000. The maximum "buy-in" is $1 million - although the age enhancement option would allow the certificate holder to double that amount to $2 million between the second and final year of the term if he or she so desired.

While 10-year and 20-year Modterm certificates provide the same protection as SPJST permanent insurance, buyers need to understand that the certificate is not designed to build cash values or to be owned for an entire lifetime. A Modterm certificate is convertible to permanent insurance without having to demonstrate proof of insurability up to age 65.

If yours is a twoincome family, Modterm insurance on both you and your spouse can help your family maintain its present lifestyle if either of you should die prematurely. Likewise, if your family is a one-income household, Modterm certificates are still a good idea for both partners. Modterm insurance on the income earner will provide financial stability for the family while Modterm insurance on the partner at home will cover the cost of replacing many services - especially if young children are involved. Please refer to the chart at the bottom of this column to see how affordable a family protection plan can be.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Meets July 27 Dear Members, Our lodge will hold its July meeting on Sunday, July 27 instead of the usual second Sunday due to the SPJST Bestfest in Belton. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. at the Youth Center.

Door prizes will be given and lunch will be served as usual. Final plans will be made for Family Day in August.

6, Cottonwood Plans July 20 Annual Picnic Lodge

Dear Readers and Members of Lodge 6, This is just a reminder to the members of Lodge 6, Cottonwood that our 100th annual picnic is just around the corner.

We are asking all those'that can come out and help on Saturday, July 19 at 9 a.m.

There is much needed help in all different places that day.

Then, on Sunday, July 20, we are asking all those that do the frying of the chicken to try to be at the lodge at 3 a.m.

There is other work that needs to be started early so we are expecting many of you to come out and help. To all the others that come out and help, you all know what your duties are and what time to be there. Everyone knows their place. The only change this year is the plates to go will be sold in the back of the lodge hall to keep the congestion out of the hall.

With all your help, it will be another successful picnic. There will be a raffle and an auction. The youth club will have the bingo.

We are also getting ready for the 100th Anniversary of our lodge on August 17,

and to top it all, Westfest is approaching on August 30 and 31. That all means a lot of work for everyone.

The deadline for turning in your information with payment was extended to July 21, since plans are being made for our 100th Anniversary Celebration of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood on August 17. A publication of a souvenir booklet is planned as part of this event to honor your forefathers and help preserve their legacy of Czech heritage and culture.

This booklet will be a very nice keepsake and you could be a part of it for years and years to come. Lodge 17, New Tabor Tarok Tournament Set for July 19 Lodge 17, New Tabor hosts their Seventh Annual Tarok Tournament on Saturday, July 19, 1997 at the lodge hall in New Tabor.

Lodge 17, New Tabor is located east of Caldwell, off Highway 36. Take FM 166 three miles to County Road 225 (sign says Hus Encampment) and then one-half mile to the lodge hall.

Registration for the tournament begins at 8:00 a.m. with play scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. The $15 entry fee includes a noon meal, snacks and prizes. Players are encouraged to pre-register. Karel Jonag, No. 28, East Bernard Mourns Loss of Julius Hlavinka Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, We were saddened to learn this past Sunday, July 6, that Brother Julius Hlavinka, a member of our lodge and RVOS, passed away. He was 77 years old. Funeral services were held on July 9 in East Bernard at the Holy Cross Church. Complete details will be forthcoming in the Vestnik. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Hlavinka family.

41, Port Lavaca Member Steven Pustejiaysky Named Pri c al at Katy Sch 1 Lodge

Steven Pustejovsky has recently been named the new principal at Sundown Elementary School in the Katy

Independent School District, effective when classes begin for the 1997-98 school year.

Steven, a member of SPJST Lodge 41, Port Lavaca, joined the Katy ISD in 1987 and was assistant principal at Wolfe Elementary School and at Golbow and West Memorial Elementary Schools, also in Katy ISD. A Waco native, Steven is a graduate of University High School and Baylor University. He has a master's degree from the University of Houston.

He served in the Navy for four years in Germany.

Steven and his wife, Diana, have two children, Katie, age five, and Ben, age two-and-one-half years. They have lived in Katy, Texas, for ten years.

Steven's main goal is to provide students a quality education. "We want to provide a learning environment -that is positive and challenging to our kiddoes," he said. "We not only have high expectations for their academic accomplishments, but for their behavioral accomplishments as well."

Mr. Pustejovsky's parents, Ben and Gladys Pustejovsky of Waco, are very active members of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco.

48, Beyersville to Sponsor July 26 Tarok Tournament Lodge

The Third Annual Pokorny-Polanka Tarok Tournament, sponsored by SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville, is Saturday, July 26, 1997, at the Volunteer Fire Hall in Thrall, Texas.

Registration begins at 2 p.m. and play begins at 3 p.m. We will play four rounds: Round One 3 to 4:15 p.m. with 15-minute break Round Two 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. with supper hour Round Three 6:45 to 8 p.m. with 15-minute break Round Four 8:15 to 9:30 p.m.

The registration fee is $15 and covers the meal and prize money for the high point player at each table, each round— $5 and overall high point player each round—$5. First through fourth place prizes will be determined by the number of players attending. Playing rules are similar to SPJST rules except for calling "povinost". You cannot pay off. You must play it if you draw yourself.

79, Corpus Christ Reports on une Meeting Lodge

The monthly meeting was held on Sunday, June 15 and was well-attended.

Before the meeting, the fathers were honored with a delicious dinner and I understand it was real nice. The members who did not attend missed a good one. I must thank Secretary Jill Sijansky for all the information for the day because I was absent. I was attending the Urbanovsky family reunion in West. Thanks, Sister Jill, for your help!

The meeting after the dinner was short. The financial report was read by President Jerry Sijansky because Treasurer Millie Elzner and her husband, Brother Jerry Elzner, were absent because of the death of her sister, Sister Helen Varrs in Cleveland, Ohio. Our sympathy goes to the family. The monthly donation of $50 was given to the Jarrell Tornado Fund.

The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, July 20 at 2 p.m. There is supposed to be a patriotic program, combining Flag Day and July 4. Also, details for the dance on Sunday, August 31 will be finalized, for which I will have a full report when the information is available.

There will be a lunch after the meeting.

Members are asked to bring food to be shared. Members are urged to attend and get involved in lodge activities.

81, Needville Reports on June Meeting

Lodge

Sunday, June 15, 1997, was Father's Day and also our meeting date. There were 52 members and guests present.

From the total of 52 people, 15 were fathers. Our gracious member, Elsie Brdecka, donated a basket filled with an assortment of fruit and candy just as she did for Mother's Day. Each father present had his name put in a box. Elsie had the honor to pick the lucky father's name.

The winner was George Abschneider and Elsie presented George with the basket of goodies. The other gift, which was donated by Adolph and Delores Macha, was given to the oldest father present.

Edwin Susan was the winning pop. He received a necktie and a bag of peppermint candy Congratulations to all dads—they are all winners. Thanks to Elsie and the Machas for the gifts.

Delicious chicken fried steak prepared by our local restaurant, Darwin's, was served at twelve noon. Thanks again to Olga Polasek for donating the money to purchase the chicken fried steak. It is sincerely appreciated. President Macha led us in grace before the meal. Thanks to President Macha for getting the steaks and to all who prepared the delicious side dishes.

At 1 p.m., President Macha called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Miranda Wiles.

All of the officers were present. The minutes for the May meeting were read by our secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall.

They were approved as read. Benita Walzel, our treasurer, gave her report which was accepted as presented. Gilbert Walzel, our Special Fund Treasurer, read the schedule of events for the hall for the preceding month. Gilbert then gave his report which was accepted as read.

This past month there was one death in our lodge. Her name is Anna Prihoda of Rosenberg. Lodge 81 extends sympathy to her family and friends. May Jesus have mercy on the soul of Anna.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie J. Gaidusek, Sr. celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 21.

Johnnie J. Gaidusek married the former Margaret H. Sulak on June 18, 1947, in Abbott Catholic Church. They have lived in Waco for 48 years.

They renewed their vows at St. Louis Catholic Church with a Christian Mass officiated by Monsignor Mark Deering.

They have been members of St. Louis Catholic Church for 29 years. A dinner and dance followed at the SPJST Hall in Elm Mott, hosted by their children, Attorney Everett and Beverly Urech of Enterprise, Alabama, Mike and Barbara McMahan of Speegleville, Johnnie Joe, Jr. and Stephanie Gaidusek of Valley Mills, and Margaret and David Whiteside of Albany, Georgia. The Gaiduseks have eight grandchildren.

Johnnie is retired from the Sherwin Williams Company with 38 years of service. He is on the board of directors for Farmers Mutual Insurance in Temple with 30 years service. He is a member of KJT, SPJST, Knights of Columbus, and WFLA. He volunteered for two years at Providence Health Center.

Polly and Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. Margaret is retired from Woods Manufacturing Company. She is a member of ICH, KJZT, SPJST, WFLA and Catholic Daughters. She volunteered for seven years at Providence Heath Center. The Gaiduseks are members of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco.

Wednesday, July 16, 1997—VESTNIK/7 A new name on our sick list is Ivory Shilk. Ivory had the misfortune to break her right wrist. We are sorry to hear this and hope you are doing better. Other names include Jerry Blinka, Adeline Bacica, Gladys Maresh, Rosie Schwettmann, and Emil Pollock. Getwell wishes are sent to you and all others who are ill. It was good to see Louise Newman and Charlie Pesak at the meeting after having been under the weather for some time.

In the correspondence department, a thank-you note was read from St. Paul's Presbyterian ladies for the hard bingo cards. Also, a reminder was read about the centennial celebration in Belton on July 12 and 13.

Congratulations to Amanda Newman for receiving a $500 scholarship from the SPJST. Amanda told us she will be attending A&M and live with her sister, Cheryl. Amanda is going to major in computer science. Good luck, girls, we are proud that you are members of Lodge 81 here in Needville. Best wishes to both of you.

A new face at our meeting was Joe Polasek of Clute, Texas. Joe is a member of Lodge 81 and is the son of Olga Polasek of Wharton. Come back again, Joe. We were happy to have you.

The Needville Little League presented the lodge with a beautiful plaque. This was for sponsoring the baseball teams in Needville. Thanks for the plaque. Good luck to all in tournament play.

President Macha reminded members that the lodge has medical supplies, such as wheelchairs, walkers, etc. available if anyone needs them. They are free of charge, but you do have to be a member of the lodge in order to use them. Also, Sister Louise Newman, who is in charge of these items, reminded us that at the end of the year, she will be giving up this position due to health reasons. If anyone is interested in taking care of this project, please get in contact with President Macha.

Congratulations to Bobby and Martha Polasek on their 21st wedding anniversary. May you both be blessed with many, many years of happy married life.

Belated Happy Birthday to Alvin Blinks. His birthday was June 30. Don't you all think Alvin looks good for his age?

Walter Anderson, Ray Horky, Winnie Susan, and Joshua Horky were the winners of the $5 prize donated by the lodge.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 20, 1997, at the lodge hall. Fried and baked chicken will be the meat on the menu. Ladies, we need your help with bringing a vegetable or salad and dessert.

The meal is served at 12 noon and the meeting follows at 1 p.m.

The crops are really beginning to look good. The maize is heading out.

Moderate rains fell throughout the area.

Ferocious lightning and thunder accompanied the rain. Many people are getting their barns filled with hay to prepare for the coming winter season.

Another Fourth of July has gone by.

We hope everyone had a nice safe day and weekend. Also, we hope everyone paused and evaluated the meaning of this day. It was a great feeling to see all of the flags out that day. Our American flag is the flag of tomorrow and it must be preserved. It stands for national independence, individual liberty, and patriotism.

Let's show pride in our country and commitment to our beliefs.

We hope everyone is continuing to enjoy the summer. Please be careful when you go into the water and watch out for the boys and girls as we drive our vehicles. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Another full month of vacation and then the school bells will be ringing again.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kurtz Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Henry and Luci Kurtz of Cuero, Texas, celebrated their 50th anniversary with a dinner and dance at the VFW Hall in Cuero on May 24, 1997. The event was hosted by their children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends.

Henry and the former Luci Krhovjak were married May 27, 1947, at St. Rome of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg, Texas. The couple has, three children: Ronald, William, and Victoria, and five grandchildren.

Henry is retired from the U.S. Government. He is a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston.

On Sunday, June 8, 1997, President Keith Kieschnick called our meeting to order at 2 p.m.

We had 35 members and four visitors who stood to recite the pledge to the flag.

The roll call of officers by Secretary Alice Jochen showed all were present.

The minutes were read and approved as read.

Correspondence was read by Kieth Kieschnick. He read a letter from the Supreme Lodge stating scholarship recipients were Jennifer Petter and Jason Wayne Hermis.

All officers' reports were read.

Henry and Luci Kurtz The youth club report was given by Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis. The youth thanks those for any donations— Henry and Millie Linhart, Frank and Dorothy Tumis, Jo Buri, Lillian and William Schmidt, Sidon and Rosie Tumis, and Henry and Rita Hermis.

Youth club members 'came forward to the podium and each member said a few touching complimentary comments for member John Buri who graduated from high school and will be attending the University of Texas in the Fall of '97.

They presented him with a gift and all the members wish him much happiness and success in the future. John has been a great leader in our society.

All reports were given.

The Sick Committee reports Amy Williamson, Barbara Hermis, George Janik, Christine Eschenberg, Betty Lusk, and Frank Majouvich were in the hospital.

Birthdays in June were for Henry Hermis, W.J. Schmidt, Elizabeth Hermis, and Keith Kieschnick.

Circle of Women Reports on July Meeting The Corpus Christi Circle of Women met at Sokol Hall on July 3 with 28 members, including Honorable Member Jerry Elzner, and five guests present. Our guests were Nolia Doucet, sister of Mattie Netek; Rhonda White, daughter of Helen Kasparek; her two daughters, Savannah and Adriana; and Henry Kosling, Attorney-at-Law, brought by Jerry Elzner.

Mr. Kosling gave a talk about the various types of legal wills, living wills, power of attorney, the importance of these documents, and answered questions regarding time. It was quite informative.

Leona Matula reported that Mary Ann Elzner was ill, and Helen Pavelka told us Rose Huff was also ill, and Sophie Snapka had a doctor's appointment. We missed these members and also the others unable to attend.

A donation was received in memory of Helen Varro, sister of Milly Elzner, who passed away June 6, and Raymend Benes, brother of Dorothy McCoy, who passed away June 7. We extend condolences to the families of both.

Last month, I announced a new tradition I would like to start: taking a picture each month of members celebrating their birthdays. A picture was taken of Ella Simcik and Della Elzner in June.

Unfortunately, the film was torn so another picture was taken of the twins in addition to July celebrants Helen Sacky, Mattie Netelc., and Jerry Elzner. Hope these turn out. Happy Birthday wishes are sent to Agnes Burge and Rose Huff.

Our members have been bringing so many door prizes that we increased the number drawn from six to eight. Several ladies wanted the wind chimes brought

by Velma Malchar and won by Marion Peterek. Fresh veggies from Lillie Hayek's garden are always a treat for the lucky winners. Thanks to Velma and Lillie and all the other ladies who brought door prizes.

As always, our meeting was enjoyable, the luncheon was delicious, and the games were a lot of fun. I'm already looking forward to seeing everyone again next month.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2, Needville Reports on une Activities In the hospital are Charlotte Hedt and Madeline Zavodny. We wish them a speedy recovery.

On Monday mornings, Olie Eixmann, Ruby Lee Oberhoff, LaVerne Tielke, Ervin Kroll, Willie Mae Tielke, Viola Fuchs, Alice Bergen, Clara Naramore, Bernie Tielke, Albin Tielke, Jr., Elsie Schmidt, Mildred Novak, Charles Euton, and John McCormick came to have sing-a-long.

Frank Ramos came to have Bible study on Tuesday mornings. In the afternoon, Toni Kramer and her group came to have bingo.

On Wednesday mornings, different churches came to have services for the residents.

San Angelo Reports on June Meeting The regular quarterly meeting of Lodge 160, San Angelo was held Sunday, June 29, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Wall Fire Hall. Standing reports and business was conducted. Special emphasis was placed on the upcoming Centennial Celebration in Belton on July 11 through 13.

Appreciation and congratulations were extended to our youth and youth leaders for a successful YAD held Saturday, June 28.

We were pleased to have in attendance Bill Rollwitz, who reported on rest home additions and improvements.

Fall Fun Day plans were discussed.

Refreshments were served by our youth club.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 12 at 2 p.m. at the Wall Fire Hall.

Brother Mikulas presented infomiafion to members pertaining to the SPJST's financial status.

Father Ramsey, Milton Legendre, Rosie Kovar and Annie Stavinoha with St. Michael's Catholic Church came to have Mass on Thursday mornings. In the afternoon, the Catholic, Methodist, Immanuel, and Damon Baptist Ladies took turns coming to have crafts.

The Presbyterian ladies served cookies and coffee to the residents.

On Friday afternoons, Mildred Novak came to help roll residents' hair.

Georgie Jurchak brought several bibs for the senior citizens at the S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home which were made by the Christian Sisters of the Houston Brethren Church. This has been a project for the Sisters for the last couple of years. The bibs were greatly appreciated.

On Wednesday morning, June 18, Peggy and Patty came to sing.

On Thursday afternoon, June 19, Garland Huryta and Mary Ann Goffinet brought pets for pet therapy.

Tuesday evening, June 24, Larry Ognoski, George Lolly and Fritz Koehne provided music and singing.

Friday afternoon, June 27, the birthday party was held. Music was provided by Louis Vacek on the piano and accordion.

Corsages were donated by "A Flower and Gift Shop." The United Church of Christ Guild provided the cakes. Birthdays for the month of June were residents Sophia McDougle, Daisy Parchmont, Annie Trapp, Charlott Hedt, and Mary Wright and staff Charles Pearce, Celia Plata, and Mary Jones. Cake, ice cream, punch, and coffee were served to all Thanks to all denominations of churches and to all the volunteers who do services in the home for the residents.

Ninth Annual

Westfest Taroky Tournament Set for August 30 The Directors of Westfest will again host a Taroky Tournament in conjunction with the Westfest celebration. The tournament will be held at West Community Center in West, Texas, on Saturday, August 30, 1997. The tournament is open to all interested taroky players, ladies and gentlemen, 18 years of age or older.

Entry fee will be $15 per person with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and play starting at 9 a.m. Play should conclude about 5:30 p.m. Kolaches and coffee will be served during registration. Lunch is included in the registration fee. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top four players. Play will continue for all players throughout the tournament. The top four players after six rounds will be awarded first, second, third and fourth place honors.

All persons wishing to enter should submit their name, address, and $15 entry fee to Westfest Taroky Tournament, P.O. Box 70, West, Texas 76691 before August 25, 1997. In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy WHEREAS, The family and many

friends of Victor Zemanek were deeply saddened by his passing on July 2, 1995, at the age of 80, and the members of this chamber join the Zemanek family and the Blessing community in remembering the life of this esteemed gentleman; and

WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Zemanek was born January 7, 1915, to Joseph and Christina Huff Zemanek; at the age of 13, he moved to Matagorda County, and over the years became a vital and valued member of that community; and WHEREAS, A veteran of World War II, he answered his country's call to arms as a member of the United States Navy, and he served that branch with honor and distinction for 12 years; he embarked on a long and rewarding agricultural career in 1946, and 10 years later, he was honored as the first recipient of the Matagorda County Outstanding Cotton Farmer of the Year award; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Zemanek worked for the betterment of the area's educational system as a member of the Tidehaven School Board for 12 years, and he further participated in community affairs as a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the American Legion Post in Blessing; and WHEREAS, Victor Zemanek truly personified the ideals of hard work, civic leadership, and devotion to family, that Texans cherish, for these are the ideals on which our state was built; in serving his family, state, and community, Mr. Zemanek created a legacy of good works by which to remember him, and his unique spirit endures in the hearts of all who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Victor Zemanek and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family; to his beloved wife, Lydia Junek Zemanek; to his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Tom DeKunder, Doris and Donnie Genzer, Lillian and Dennis Chastain, Betty Jean and Darrell Crain, and Jim Snyder; to his sons and daughters-inlaw, Victor Joe and Ginger Zemanek, John Henry and Tracy Zemanek, Robert and Joane Zemanek, and Jerry and Cindy Zemanek; to his sisters, Liddie Pavelka, Martha Johnston, and Sidney Bridewell; to his brother, Joe Zemanek; to his grandchildren and great-grandchild; and to all his relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Victor Zemanek.

age 55, of Temple, who passed away Thursday, July 3, 1997, in a Temple hospital.

Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 1997, at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Rev. Billy Johnson officiating.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

He was born in Seaton to Joe V. Chlapek and Mary Rose Chudej Chalapek. He married Pat Martin on November 1, 1996. He lived most of his life in the Seaton and Temple areas, but also lived in Houston for a short time. He owned and operated Chlapek Business and Tax Services. He was a 1960 graduate of Rogers High School and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1964.

He was a member of Miller Heights Baptist Church in Belton, SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton, and the Century Club at Texas A&M University.

Survivors are his wife, Pat Chlapek of Temple; two sons, Christopher Chlapek and Matthew Chlapek, both of Temple; his mother, Mary Chlapek of Seaton; one brother, Marvin Chlapek of Houston; one stepson, Tony Hurd of Fort Worth; and one step-grandson.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Miller Heights Baptist Church Special Offering.

who passed away on May 9, 1997, at the age of 91.

She was born in Wesley, Texas, on December 17, 1905, the daughter of Frank and Olga (Posival) Janes.

She was a housewife and homemaker.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Monday, May 12 at Marek-Burns Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron with the Rev. John Kueker officiating.

Burial followed in the Corinth Cemetery near Buckholts.

Survivors are a son, Charles Hundle of Cameron; three daughters, Evelyn Orsag of New Lens, Louisiana, Irene Wassermann of Temple, Dorothy F77ell of Perryton; a sister, Johnny Williams of Buckholts; 12 grandchildren; 23 greatgrandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, six brothers, and one sister.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace and her memory live among us forever.

Sara grew up in Mason, Texas, and:, graduated from Mason High School in 1963. She graduated from Southwest Texas University and taught in the Lubbock, San Antonio, and San Angelo school systems.

The years since her marriage to Larry Powell have been shared with her family and a multitude of friends in the Wall and Eola area. Sara was gifted with the unique ability to so easily make cherished friendships and be dearly loved by all that met her.

Remembering her for her humor, strength and courage are her husband, Larry Powell of Wall; a son, Wade Powell; daughter, Kimberley Powell; and mother, Ethel Mae Hatch, all of San Angelo; twin, Nancy Miller of Christoval; a special cousin, George Brannies of Mason; and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 30 at Johnson's Funeral Home in San Angelo. Graveside servies were at 2 p.m. in Hilda Cemetery near Mason, where she will be beside her father, Jim Hatch of Mason.

The family requests that contributions be made to Hospice of San Angelo or a favorite charity.

who passed away on May 9, 1997, at the Odd-Fellow Rebekah Nursing Home in Ennis following a lengthy illness.

Sister Hejny was born in Crisp, Texas, on February 26, â&#x20AC;˘1905, the eldest child of Frank and Annie Mica Skrivanek. She attended school in Creechville and worked on the family farm. On November 22, 1927, she married Frank W. Hejny and they engaged in farming in the Telico Community. Brother Hejny preceded her in death on September 28, 1993, after 62 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by their son, Raymond F. Hejny, who lost his life in the Korean Conflict on March 27, 1953.

Sister Hejny was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ennis, SPJST Lodge 135, and the Ennis Sewing Circle.

She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Edward Mynarcik (Rose) and Irene Christian, both of Ennis; three grandchildren: Mrs. Harold (Debbie) Markham and her husband Harold, Steve Christian, and Mrs. Abel (Shannon) Quintanilla and husband Abel, all of Ennis; seven greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; four sisters: Annie Koubek, Hermina Taraba, Georgie Wensowitch and husband Mike, all of Ennis, and

Mr. David Earl (Buster) Calloway, 45, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, in Waxahachie.

He was born August 15, 1951, in Corsicana, the son of Olon E. and Yvonne Welch Callaway. He attended Rice school until moving to Ennis in 1965. He then attended Ennis High School where he was All-State his senior year and was considered one of the top high school football players in the state.

He graduated from Ennis High School in 1969. He then attended Texas A&M where he played football and was AllSouthwest Conference for two years.

After college he was drafted by the New England Patriots. He returned to Ennis and was employed by Briggs-Weaver in Dallas for 11 years. He later worked for Texas Mill in Dallas. He then started his own business and worked in OwensHermatic in Dallas as a salesman and consultant for 10 years while running his business, Wholesale Services, which was a vendor for the U.S. Government. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Letterman's Association of A&M, the SPJST Lodge 25, the Association of Former Students of A&M and the former president of the

He is survived by his wife of Ennis; a son, Corby Callaway of Ennis; a daughter, Carmony Callaway of Ennis; his mother, Yvonne Callaway of Ennis; a

brother and his wife, Clay and Renee Callaway of Palmer; several aunts and uncles; two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Olon E. Callaway, on February 9, 1994.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Saturday, June 28 in the First United Methodist Church. Interment was in the Rice Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.

Reunions Jakubik Family Reunion It is that time of year when the descendants of John and Rosalie (Sebesta) Jakubik get together for the Jakubik Family Reunion. The date is set for Sunday, July 20, 1997, in Snook at the SPJST Hall.

Elzner Family Reunion The Elzner Family Reunion will be held in Corpus Christi on July 19, 1997. The meeting will be in Howard Johnson Motel Conference Room.

Darilek Reunion The annual Josef and Anastasia Darilek Reunion will be held Sunday, August 10, 1997, at the Moulton Senior Citizens Center in Moulton, Texas.

Please note that this is a new location!

Our older folks need the air conditioning and there are several ball fields for the kids to play-baseball, volleyball, basketball, tennis and a playground. Kids bring your gear.

Dear Campers, I hope all of you in District Four are ready for an exciting camp because there is one in store for you on July 18 to 20!

We will leave Wall around 10 a.m. on July 18 to head to Camp Lone Star near LaGrange. Be sure to pack a sack lunch for your noon meal.

We will arrive at camp around 4 p.m. to start some fun-filled days. Be ready for swimming, canoeing, archery, skeet/trap shooting, volleyball, games, craft, challenge course, dancing, and many, many more activities. The highlight will be a Big Birthday Bash on Saturday evening. Be sure to bring a red/white/blue outfit for the SPJST Birthday Party.

All of you should have received a letter about items that you will need to bring to camp. If you did not receive one, please let me know. The main thing to pack is lots of enthusiasm! I'm looking forward to seeing all of you on July 18!

Christopher Vanek is six years old. He is the son of James and Monica Vanek. Christopher enjoys playing baseball, soccer, football, basketball, kickball, dodge ball, and swimming. Christopher's sister is Jamie, who is four years old, and his brother is Jonathan, who is 22 months old.

Christopher is a first grader at Sacred Heart in Hallettsville. He is also a member of KIT and the baseball league.

30, Taiton Reports on June Meeting

Dear SPJST Readers, The SPJST Lodge 30 Youth met on Sunday, June 1, 1997, at the Taiton Community Center. The meeting was called to order by President Curtis Dorotik. The pledge and prayer was led

by Jason Kaspar. Our visitor was DYC Marcy Dorotik. The secretary called roll and read last month's meeting minutes.

Old business was discussed. YAD cards are to be turned in no later than June 6, 1997. Camp was discussed.

Campers are to bring all personal belongings like a pillow, sheets, towels, etc.

Camp tee-shirt and 100 pennies drive certificates were handed out.

Under new business, we discussed SPJST Flag Day essays. Point sheets were discussed and are to be picked up at Youth Leader Bubela's house later.

SPJST Rules of Conduct were to be signed and turned back in at the meeting.

The program for the month was Father's Day. The members made cards and read them to everyone. For the charity project, the members bagged candy

Hotel information will appear again in next week's Vest-nik. and tied magazines with curly ribbon.

They took them to the hospital the day before Father's Day and gave them out.

They also wished everyone a Happy Father's Day. Refreshments were snowcones that were served by T.J., Brandon, and Steven Drapela.

Our next meeting will be held on July 6, 1997, at the Taiton Community Center.

Moravian region hard hit by flooding Despite minor improvements, the flooding situation is still critical in many regions of the Czech Reppublic. As this week's Vestnik went to press, Radio Prague was reporting that "the big water was washing away everything that stands in its way, be it humans, animals, cars or houses."

In North Moravia, flooding forced local authorities;to evacuate people in Ostrava and Bohumin. And while this was successfully accomplished, the water threat moved on to South Moravia where the most critical moments were yet to come. 17 people are reported drowned in North Moravia alone and no one dares to estimate the overall number of casualties. There were no dead reported yet from South Moravia, but the situation'is desperate in many areas. Some 100 square kilometres of land were flooded in the Kromeriz region.

The situation didn't seem as critical in the vicinity of Brno. In the Zlin region, some 500y people had to leave their homes in Otrolcovic,e-Sterkoviste after the local provisional dam was no longer able to hold the tons of water. The water is already returning to the rivers in most regions but experts expect that the Morava River will give rescuers another big headache in the hours to come. The main task now is to help the thousands of people who lost everything in the disaster.

At the end of last week, the Czech Cabinet sent in 5,000 soldiers to help the police gain good control of the troubled regions. The aim is not only to make humanitartian aid more effective but also to prevent looting in the deserted areas. As premier Vaclav Klaus told the press, there is not a lack of drinking water, but more of a problem with its effective distribution. The army is currently supplying some 200,000 people with five litres of water per capita a day. In many cities, hygiene experts warned citizens against drinking contaminated tap water. Deliveries are complicated by the fact that many regions are besieged by the big water and these can only be reached in a helicopter.

Most gas stations in North Moravia are out of order. Many railroad lines are expected to be out of business for one or two weeks. The cabinet meanwhile announced its intention to use up to eight billion crowns to fight the damage caused by the floods. The emergency headquarters is getting help from all over the Czech Republic. The Red Cross is receiving more and more donations and, an account with the Czech National Bank has been set up to help collect money from the citizens. A private telephone company equipped humanitarian teams with hundreds of its mobile phones. In Prague and other cities that have been spared what is generally referred to as the "Hundred Year Water," thousands of anonymous citizens are supplying humanitarian centres with the much needed items of everyday use Individuals or groups wanting to assist in the Czech flood relief effort are encouraged to send contributions to the American Red Cross, 2218 Pershing Drive, Austin, Texas 78723 and indicate that the gift is for Czech Flood Victims Relief.

Czech Republic invited to join NATO Last week the Czech Republic achieved its greatest foreign policy success ever, by winning an official invitation to join the. NATO alliance. The smiles said it all as President Vaclav Havel joined hands with his Polish and Hungarian counterparts in Madrid to mark the achievement of a policy aim first announced in 1991.

Czech Foreign Minister Josef Zieleniec summed up what membership means for its supporters in Prague when he said that now the results of Munich and Yalta have been definitively erased Others went even further in their praise: Czech stock exchange chief Tomas Jezek said before the news was announced that he would go to the nearest window, open it, and scream for joy. While sociologist Ivan Gabel said he would celebrate in a more traditional manner: by drinking beer until he fell over Nevertheless, the news had its critics, too. Deputy Josef Krejsa said the Czech Republic should declare neutrality and use the money saved for flood relief.

Additionally, opinion polls show that less than 50 percent of Czechs favor NATO membership. Regardless, President Havel allowed few doubts on this score. He said the leaders of the three coalition parties and of the Social Democrats had pledged to do all they could to convince their supporters of the benefits of membership and that he believed they would keep their promise.

The July 8 edition of Mlada Fronta Dnes carried an interview with Foreign Minister Josef Zieleniec, who said that negotiations related to joining the alliance would be swift. He also indicated that NATO membership would make the Czech Republic more attractive to foreign investors.

Czech Cultural Center opens gift shop A collectibles boutique opened in the Northwest Mall Houston, West Loop at Hempstead Road on July 15, 1997. Completely operated by a volunteers group, the shop will feature primarily fine Czech-made products from crystal chandeliers to porcelain, pottery, jewelry, painted furniture and toys. Innovative items will bring an exciting market to discriminating shoppers. Gift Shop Chairman Danna Ermis is bringing to fruition yet another objective of the Czech Cultural Center Houston.

TOCA reactivates "Gold and Silver" project Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) is reactivating the "Gold and Silver Certificates" Project begun in 1986 during Texas' Sesquiantennial Year The purpose of the certificates is to acquire a registration of early Czech families which immigrated to Texas from what was once called the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

At the end of World War I in 1918, the country of Czechoslovakia was created and consisted of Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, and Slovakia.

before 1861. "Silver Certificates" are awarded to Czech families which have lived in Texas since 1861 but before 1920. The certificates are 8 1/2" by 11" and are suitable for framing.

Application forms are now available for obtaining the gold and silver certificates.

These forms should be completed as fully as possible with an attached photo copy of any legal documents which prove early residence in Texas. This information will provide valuable genealogical records for the archives of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center Project to be located in LaGrange, Texas.

The cost of processing each application for a certificate is $25, of which $20 will be donated to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. Additional duplicate certificates for other family members are available for $5 each if ordered at the same time.

Czechoslovak genealogical conference set The Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International presents its Sixth Genealogical/Cultural Conference on October 1 to 4, 1997. The Conference is at the Radisson South Hotel in Bloomington, Minnesota, conveniently located near the famous Mall of America.
