The gala event kicks off with a kolache baking contest and 5K fun run at 9 a.m., followed by a mower and bike parade at 11 a.m. Afternoon entertainment includes a program at 1 p.m., followed by games, contests and music, including "ELVIS LIVE" at 6 p.m. and a free dance by the Granger Polka Boys from 7 until 11 p.m. See page 4 for details. On Your Mark, ,Get Set, Celebrate It Won't Be Long Now Before you know it, it'll be here.

SPJST's Bestfest celebration set for July 12 and 13 at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton, Texas promises to be an exciting celebration. The event brings together several aspects of our diverse society -from old-time demonstrations and traditional activities such as tarok and the beseda to more recent additions like barbecue cook-offs and golf tournaments. And behind it all, there exists a musical backdrop, appealing to a broad range of musical tastes. I've heard all of the bands that will be performing and have thoroughly enjoyed each of them in the venues where they have performed. The Czechoslovak Arts and Sciences (SVU) conference truly rounds out the event in that it provides something of an academic approach to several topics related to Czech history, culture and current events.

The long-term implications of a successful Bestfest are also exciting: Perhaps an annual statewide celebration that would showcase the best that the SPJST and its members have to offer? You only have to use your imagination and see where that could lead us! But all of that can wait. For now, let's plan to be in Belton, Texas on July 12 and 13 to celebrate and savor this historic occasion.

"It used to be that I just wrote letters to the editor," he explains, "I'd make a few comments - or I'd refer to some humorous incident ...

"Then one day, I walked into the newspaper office and suggested a feature idea on how they used to tabulate the elections in East Bernard. In response, Fred Chambers, the editor, suggested, `Why don't you write it up, Joe, and we'll see how it looks.'

"So I went ahead and wrote it up and he put it on the front page. The rest as they say - is history."

To date, several of Brother Nezval's columns have been published in the Tribune - with more planned for the future.

Brother Nezval's columns should provide inspiration to other aspiring writers out there or for that matter, to anyone who has always wanted to do something new and productive.

"Just do it," Brother Nezval advises. "Nobody's going to do it for you."

"Let's plan to be in Belton, Texas on July 12 and 13 to celebrate and savor this historic occasion."

The World According to Joe In this week's mailbag came an interesting letter. A plain brown envelope with the return address marked only as "Tribune." Inside was a copy of the June 18 East Bernard Tribune. No explanation. Just a copy of the paper.

Flipping to the back cover, I saw a large photo of Lodge 28, East Bernard President Joe Nezval, looking up from his plate with a hamburger in his left hand. The photo was accompanied by a lengthy column - by Brother Nezval in which he thoroughly discusses the evolution of the hamburger from its birth in Athens, Texas to its present day format. The article also includes Brother Nezval's amusing critique of some of the best - and worst places - that he has ever dined on what he refers to as the "National Food of Texas."

Later that afternoon, I talked by telephone with Brother Nezval to find out about his newfound calling as a newspaper columnist. Brother Nezval, as many of our members know, has long been a fixture at the SPJST's quadrennial conventions, regularly exercising his right as a delegate to offer discussion and contributing various points of parliamentary procedure. Calling All Cooks Most of you, I'm sure, remember Cindy Marek Kovar - last year's winner of the Newman's Own and Good Housekeeping Cooking Contest. She called last week to inform readers that she will be on hand from 3:30 until 5 p.m. at the SPJST Centennial cookbook display SPJST Bestfest on Saturday, July 12, to sign cookbooks and answer questions anyone might have about competing in the 1997 cooking contest. The grand prize winner of the contest will receive a $50,000 prize to donate to their selected charity. Regional winners will each receive $10,000 to donate to the charitable cause of their choice. In addition, all regional winners will win an allexpense paid trip to New York City.

Sales and Service Tip Hand-written thank-you notes are so simple and so classy and yet so unusual.

Important here is that the notes are best when they are handwritten. In this day of word processing, it's easy to spot a computer-generated, form thank-you letter. In my opinion, they do more harm than good. Take two minutes and hand write a note. It is so simple, and the results are amazing.

Home Office Hosts Flag Day Ceremony

From the President's Office Quilt and Hobby Display Particimvits Invited Quilters and Hobbyists are invited to display their quilts and hobbies at SPJST's 100th Anniversary Bestfest Celebration on July 12 and 13 at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton.

The displays will be in the Expo Building, located next door to the Expo Dome. The SPJST will provide table space for each quilt or hobby. Quilters may bring racks to display their quilts, and hobbyists may bring special set-ups.

of Czech Costumes and Contest Schedule

Parade

The Parade of Costumes scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 12 at the SPJST Bestfest is one of the very visible says that the SPJST is helping to promote and keep alive the traditions of Czech culture. Throughout the years, men, women and children have taken great pride in wearing their traditional costumes, or kroje, and participating in various civic functions, festivals and religious celebrations across the state. A growing interest in the Czech culture is evident by the ever-increasing number of annual Czech festivals now being held

throughout Texas and the United States.

Folk costumes, just like songs, music and dances arean indispensible part of the Czech culture.

The Bestfest Parade of Costumes is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Expo Center Dome. Everyone is invited to wear their costumes. Please provide a description of the costume that is approximately 50 words.

Costume contest judging for ages 18 and over is at 6:30 p.m. in the Dome.

Cash prizes will be awarded.

Mower and Bike Parade At 11 a.m., the" Best Lil' Mower and Bike Parade" begins — a chance for both youngsters and adults to display their red, white and blue spirit and `parade' their bikes and mowers in a short, patriotic procession. Barbecue Dinner at 5 p.m.

Light food items will be available throughout the day, including hamburgers, which will be available starting at 11 a.m. A barbecue dinner catered by Cyclone Corral, will also be available, starting at 5 p.m.

In commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of our SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood, we are planning a celebration on Sunday, August 17 with a publication of a souvenir booklet as part of our event. To honor your forefathers and to help preserve their legacy, an emphasis on Czech heritage and culture will be prominent in this booklet. It will be a keepsake for generations to come so please let your input flow and mail your information pronto.

If you wish not to place a large ad or a family history, anyone individually can place a name, a memorial, or even a small message at the price of $2 per line.

So you can see, it will be easy to have any message that would float around for generations and generations. How exciting!

Flag Hall is located 12 miles east of Temple, past Zabcikville; exit at the blinking light to FM 485 and then one mile to FM 964.

5K Fun Run/Walk Activities start at 9 a.m. with a 5K Fun Run/Walk. "The run/walk entry fee is $10. Race entrants will receive a colorful race tee-shirt. Olympic-style medals will be presented to the top three male and top three female finishers in each age division. Divisions are as follows: 6-12; 1318; 19-29; 30 - 39; 40 - 49; 50 and up.

Two motions were made and passed to take care of lodge business. One of these motions was to cancel the July meeting due to the SPJST 100th Anniversary Celebration in Belton and many members wish to attend the celebration.

The fraternal hour buffet luncheon went off on schedule with all food and beverages donated by the members.

Lodge 39, Bryan Member Expresses Thanks Dear Vestnik Readers, Our Lodge 39 of Bryan had its monthly meeting on June 15, 1997, at our lodge home.

My husband, Bennie Matejka, and I, Albina Matejka, received our 50-year pins and we were grateful we had attained those many years. Our local lodge gave us a barbecue lunch with all the trimmings and invited our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren which is a pretty big bunch. We all had a great time.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Lillie and Wade O'Shields for doing the cooking and Wade, thanks a lot. I'm sure it was your idea. Thanks again for going to the trouble.

Afterwards, we had a meeting and a good:group was present.

I guess I will close with a wish for everyone to be happy and as Chief Dan George said in Josie Wells movie, "Tend to persevere."

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The June lodge meeting was held on Monday, June 9 following the covered dish supper honoring the graduates and fathers.

President Brother Edwin Pechal opened the meeting. Flag Bearers were Rachel Baca and Lisa Greger who also led the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag.

Visitors recognized were Ann Balusek and Freddie Schroeder. Please come again!

Those mentioned on the sick list were Brother Calvin Chlapek and Sisters Ann Hejl, Miladie Jecmenek, Pat Pechal, and Kitty Sodek. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you daily.

Among our members receiving awards from the West Schools this year were Ryan Kolar (piano), Amber Mach, and Rachel Pareya, both on the Cheer Dance Team and Crystal Mynar in English I. Others included Robyn Podsednik who was named the winner of the annual Bausch and Lomb Science Award which is presented to 6,500 school participants throughout the United States, Canada and several foreign countries, the subjects being chemistry, psychology and trigonometry. She also achieved an award in U.S. history. She will be a cheerleader during the next school year.

Her sister, Rebecca, will be a twirler.

Jana Vaculik placed first in district spelling. Jana is the daughter of Jan and Marcella Vaculik and speaks Czech fluently. Our heartiest congratulations to all of these achievers!

The following members were among the 1997 graduates of West High School: Jo Anna Pareya, daughter of David and Evelyn Pareya, and Michael Zahirniak, son of Willie and Beulah Zahirniak. We are very proud of all of these students for their accomplishments and best of luck is wished for their future endeavors.

Treasurer Freddie Kaluza gave his report which was accepted as read.

A motion was made by Sister Lil Matus that Sokol West and Lone Star Hall purchase an ad in the Lodge 6 souvenir booklet. The motion carried.

Vice President Sefcik suggested that $100 be donated to the Lone Star Hall Building Fund in memory of our deceased president, Ted Kocian. Sister Mona Zahirniak put this in the form of a motion. It was approved.

FAC Maxine Sefcik announced that a pin is available to all members that turned in at least 100 hours of service on their 1996 FAC report. She will present these at our next meeting.

Brother Ray Matus reported that there were several bids out for the improvements to be made to Lone Star Hall but nothing definite has been received. He said that this is a very busy time of the year for builders and nothing was available at this time. A report of money earned at our fund raisers and money required for this project will be given at our next meeting by Sister Lil Matus.

It was reported that people leaving Lone Star Hall during festivities there were driving through the yard of a nearby resident and there have been complaints received. Brother Ray Matus will look into this further.

Plans for another fund raiser were tabled at this meeting.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 5. We hope to have a large attendance at this meeting.

Wesley Zahirniak drew for the door prize which was won by Mary Lou Mynar. Everyone enjoyed refreshments, food and fellowship after the meeting.

There were seven 50-year members of Lodge 54 honored at Lone Star Hall on June 1 from 3 to 5 p.m. Only two of these members were present, namely, Jo Ann Cepak of Waco and Henry W. Gerlich of Abbott. Others who were unable to attend included Linda F. Gipson of Arlington, Mary Ann Hammond of Washington (her brother Oswald Vana accepted her pin), Anna R. Iverson of Indiana (Anne Emery stood in her her), Dwain R. Pomykal of Lewisville, and Margaret Stanislav of Bulverde. Our

congratulations to these honorees!

We were honored to have State FAC Barbara Rosenkranz and her husband with us. We thank Barbara for her interesting and informative presentation. We also thank Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director, for attending and speaking to us. A delicious home-cooked meal followed. We thank Lil and Ray Matus and their helpers Richard and Annie Hlavenka and also the lodge members who helped prepare this delicious meal. Sister Mona Zahirniak presented the beautifully decorated cake and provided table decorations. Sister Maxine Sefcik furnished the United States flags that were given to each participant. The 50-year committee was composed of Chairman Maxine Sefcik, Anne Emery, and Terry Sefcik. We express our thanks to everyone involved for this once-in-alife time occasion.

66, Waco Reports on June Meeting

The regular meeting of Lodge 66 was held on June 15 with 21 members and ten youth in attendance. The youth members presented the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Motto. All members stood for a moment of silent prayer for a speedy recovery for Brother and Sister Charlie Mueller's granddaughter who suffered major injuries when she fell from a horse.

Congratulations to Kerri Annette Niemeyer, freshman, and to Gladys Yates, undergraduate, our Lodge 66 scholarship winners. We wish you the very best in the future. Also, congratulations to Nathan Tierce on his graduation from high school. For his achievements, Nathan was presented a cash gift of $200 from the Libbie Parma SPJST Lodge 66 Youth Club Trust Fund. Good luck, Nathan.

Candidates for membership included Nathaniel Earl Tierce, Milan Dujka, III, Megan Dujka, LeAnne Dujka, Harriet Dujka, and Sarah Dujka. We are happy to welcome you as new members and look forward to your attendance and participation in our activities.

All officers and committee chairman gave informative reports. In the absence of Sister Lucille Cervenka, Entertainment Committee Chairman, Sister Diana Engelke, and Sister Libbie Parma reported on plans for the Youth Achievement Day at Lodge 66 on June 29. Registration will be from 10 to 11 a.m. The noon meal will be served from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. and the talent part begins at 1 p.m.

FAC Mary Alice Langlotz reported on the last game night which was held in conjunction with the clean-up night on June 9. She thanked everyone for coming out to help clean the hall. She reviewed events to be held on July 13 as part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration. The next game night is scheduled for July 14 at Linden Hall.

President John Engelke gave a review of all activities scheduled for the SPJST 100th Anniversary Celebration on July 12 and July 13 and stated he would like to see a good representation at the celebration.

There has been a change made in the July meeting of the Board of Directors.

This meeting has been changed from July 2 to June 25.

The Cheer and Condolence Committee reported a get-well card was sent to Sister Betty Stone. We pray she is feeling better. Also, a sympathy card was sent to Jimmy and Evelyn Stuckly on the death of his brother-in-law, Harold Trojan of Irving. We pray that he may rest in peace and we will remember the family in prayer.

Congratulations to Brother Louie Veselka who was selected as Father of the Year. Happy Father's Day, Louie, and to all the fathers. June birthday celebrants present were Darlene Engelke and Emma Ceska. Mary Alice Langlotz won the 5050 game and Dorothy Veselka was the winner of the door prize.

80, Holland Reports on June Meeting

President Harold Rohde called the June meeting to order at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, 1997. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members.

Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham read the minutes from the May meeting and they were approved after one verbal correction. Brother Latham then gave all committee reports with all doing an outstanding job. Keep up the great work!

A thank-you was received from David Milek for receiving the Moran Burns Scholarship. This is a joint scholarship given by Lodge 80 and American Legion Post 526 to a senior graduating from Holland High School. Brother Burns was an active member of both organizations and a great bingo ambassador in the surrounding area.

Thank-yous were received from the Sue Mewhinny family for the donation to the SPJST scholarship in her memory; from the Joe Balusek family for the donation to the SPJST scholarship and for the use of the hall; and from the Bartlett Boy Scouts for the donation to their organization.

One hundred dollars was sent to the Jarrell Relief Fund from the lodge.

Three hundred dollars was given to the City of Holland to repair Main Street before the Corn Festival.

Brother D.I. "Happy Don" Bohac was on the sick list at the writing of this letter.

Hope you get to feeling better soon, D.I. Dean Brisbin celebrated a birthday in June.

The meeting was called to order by President Kathy Trefell.

The roll was called by Secretary Dona Clooney. She also read the minutes of the May meeting which were approved as read.

Our Treasurer, Ellen Miculka, gave her report which was approved.

Mary Kosut, Sunshine Chairman, gave her report. She sent several get-well cards to members who were ill.

Ellen Miculka will have thyroid surgery on Thursday. We hope you will do well, Ellen.

Flo Orsag, Vice President, asked for cooks for July. Since it is so hot, a motion was made that we have a covered dish luncheon. On the first Wednesday the Birthday Club will furnish the chicken, which will be bought by Helen Hegwood. The ladies will furnish a covered dish. Cakes will be brought by Bessie Lero, Willie May Ermis, Stacie Kocich, Corrine Kessler, and Flo Orsag.

On the second Wednesday, we will have sandwiches and cakes will be brought by Adella Kite, Ellen Miculka, Dona Clooney, Edna Froelich and Willie May Ermis. Willie May will also help in the kitchen on both Wednesdays.

For Centennial/Homecoming Day, we made $25.95 on coffee and $233.25 on

pastries. That's very good and we would like to thank all the ladies who brought pastries for this.

On June 19, we went to lunch at Kountry Kitchen Steak.

Our cooks for June were Bessie Dewer, Corrine Kessler, Edna Froelich, and Era Richards.

Our only birthday celebrant for June was Inez Jeans.

Calcutta was won by Edna Froelich and Ellen Miculka.

After prayer by Helen Hegwood, we had a delicious lunch of spaghetti, salad, and dessert.

Lodge 161, La Parita Reports on June Meeting On June 7, 1997, Lodge 161, La Parita held its quarterly meeting with dinner at the Jourdanton Civic Center. Fifteen members and one visitor attended.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. There were no deceased members to report. Brother Ernest Spacek gave the Table Prayer and then we adjourned for our noon meal.

Our lunch was picked up at Brothers Restaurant in Pleasanton by President Koch and Brother Ernest Spacek. A delicious chicken fried steak dinner with cream gravy, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots and bread was served. Delicious!

Tea, coffee, and desserts were provided by the members.

Secretary-Treasurer Tillie Koch read the minutes from the last meeting, after reconvening after lunch. Two corrections to the minutes were noted by Sister Bettie House. Minutes were corrected and signed by President Koch.

The FAC report was given by Reporter Virginia Valchar in the absence of FAC Officer Don Valchar. Reporter Virginia handed out Fraternal Services Everyday Hero Achievement Awards to the following members: Sister Bettie House for 426 acts; Brother Lloyd House for 232 acts; Brother Don and Sister Virginia Valchar for 185 acts; Brother Milton and Sister Tillie Koch for 158 acts; and Sister Vlasta Juricek Zuhlke for 77 acts. Also, a big thank you to Sister Leona Pivonka for 23 acts; Brother Vince Pivonka for 21 acts; and Sister Frances Kovar for 14 acts.

Sister Virginia also reminded members of the 100th celebration in Belton on July 12 and 13.

President Milton Koch told everyone who had Czech costumes to please wear them to the 100th Celebration. He also thanked everyone for all their fraternal acts.

Some correspondence was received and read by President Koch and Secretary Tillie Koch.

Sales Representative Tillie Koch said she had no new members, but a possible six. Sales Representatives Barry Koch and Linda Ramey had nothing to report.

President Koch mentioned we did have five new members since the first of 1997 and that our lodge is growing!

Next, Sister Bettie House gave the birthdays and anniversaries of our members since the last meeting.

Congratulations to all!

Old business to discuss included a trip for members and Sister Bettie House asked why the monthly meeting issue was not mentioned two years ago.

President Koch said he just forgot to mention it.

District Sales Representative Brother Jim Wiest said monthly meetings would be beneficial and would be a step up instead of a step down. Quarterly meetings are really not feasible because of time between meetings; deaths and illnesses of members can not be passed on or discussed when necessary. Monthly meetings will keep us closer and more informed as to happenings in the lodge and in the area.

Sister Gussie Spacek mentioned we have a new members meeting to get new members to come; a dinner and fellow-

ship afterwards to get acquainted. Our lodge has 175 paid-up and 72 active members.

A motion was made by Brother Ernest Spacek and seconded by Sister Bettie House to have monthly meetings and our quarterly meetings would include the noon meal. The motion passed. (Going to monthly meetings will give our lodge $500 from the Supreme Lodge.)

Monthly meetings will be at 3 p.m.

Officers must attend seven meetings to be a delegate to the convention. The FAC Committee needs to decide where to have the new members dinner; we will probably run a listing in the "Club Calendar" or Calendar of Events in the Pleasanton Express newspaper.

FAC Officer Don Valchar cannot be head of this committee because of his business, so Barry Koch will be head of the committee.

Under new business, SecretaryTreasurer Tillie Koch gave the financial report. She also mentioned that Lodge 161 entered a vehicle in the Poteet Strawberry Festival Parade and a decorated vehicle in Jourdanton's Kactus Kick Parade and we won second place in the division. Sister Lucy Zepeda made beautiful tissue flowers to put on the vehicle.

The Ram Charger used in the parade in Jourdanton was President Koch's and was decorated by President Koch, Secretary-Treasurer Tillie Koch, Sister Lucy Zepeda, and Brother Valdo Benitez.

Good job!

Sister Bettie House reported that the FAC Committee met on April 6 after the District Seven meeting to discuss taking a bus to the 100th Celebration in Belton on July 12 and 13. Brother Barry Koch was going to check into a van in case only a few people wanted to go and President Koch said the Pleasanton bus tours would be cheaper, approximately $650.

Brother Jim Wiest said Mr. Alexandr Vondra, the Czech Ambassador, will be at the Belton celebration. Also, there will be lots of music, dancing, etc. The barbecue cook-off has a few openings and at the golf tournament, there will be a designated "special hole" so if you make a hole-in-one, you will win a new car. Lots of good things will be happening at this celebration. Sister Bettie House asked how many members would like to go and quite a few raised their hands. Brother Lloyd House motioned that our lodge sponsor a trip to Belton for this 100th celebration on July 12. Brother Vince Pivonka seconded. The motion passed.

Sister Bettie House's District Seven report was that she attended the District Seven Spring Meeting in Corpus Christi on April 6 and the District Seven Fall Meeting will be in New Braunfels.

President Koch thanked everyone for coming. Also, he thanked those who brought desserts, drinks and helped with setting up and cleaning. Thank you all!

The monthly meeting of Lodge 179, Warrenton was held on June 12 in Warrenton. It was opened with President El Gene Eckermann leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

Reports and correspondence were read.

Lodge 179 extends sympathy to the families of Ben Halamicek and David Vierus.

Present at the meeting with a May birthday was Doris Eckermann. Couples with May anniversaries were Mr. and Mrs. Mike Flinn and Mr. and Mrs. El Gene Eckermann.

We were happy to have Heath Turner as a guest at the meeting. He is the

grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Baack.

The food committee suggested to have cold cuts for our July 10 meeting.

SPJST Lodge 201, BleiblervilleNelsonville held their regular meeting on Sunday, June 8, 1997, at 3 p.m. with Mrs. Elaine Duron, President, presiding.

A moment of silent prayer was held for deceased members, Mrs. Mary Susen and Mrs. Edna Mikeska.

All officers were present except for Vice President Mr. Edwin Shupak, Jr. Mrs. Lillie Mae Shupak read the minutes. Jenelle Zettel gave the hall treasurer's report and Mrs. Clara Susen gave the treasurer's report.

Congratulations to the following graduate members of Lodge 201 who each received a $500 scholarship to attend a college of their choice: Trish Ann Kokemor, Barry Allan Mikeska, Audrea Zettel, and Melissa Shupak.

A thank-you card from Melissa Shupak was read.

On the sick list who we knew of were Jessie Macat and Mary Ann King.

The next meeting is on the second Sunday in July, which is July 13 at 3 p.m.

Reunions Hrabel Family Reunion The 27th Annual Hrabel Reunion will be held again this year at the SPJST Lodge 6 hall on Saturday, July 12, 1997, three miles east of West on FM 2114 Road.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. Socializing is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Snacks and drinks will be served during the day.

Bring your pictures, scrapbooks or anything else you would like to share with others. Games are from 2 to 3 p.m. for all ages. A domino tournament will be available for the adults. A business meeting and election of officers is at 3 p.m. followed by a raffle and auction. Useful and inexpensive prize donations to the auction or raffle will be appreciated. Please, designate the contribution for raffle or auction.

The catered supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. Visiting will continue until midnight for those who wish to stay.

As always a surprise door prize donated by the president, Henry Blahuta, will be awarded.

On Sunday, July 13, for those who wish, we will have a farewell breakfast in a cafe in Waco for our final visit. We will decide the cafe on Sunday at the reunion.

Funeral services for Ben M. Halamicek, 88, a rancher of near Fayetteville, were held Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m. in the Knesek Chapel in Fayetteville. The Rev. David Bernshausen officiated with burial in the Halamicek Cemetery.

Mr. Halamicek died April 10 in Care Inn of LaGrange.

He was born in Roznov, near Fayetteville, on July 21, 1908, the son of the late John M. and Anna (Baron) Halamicek. He was united in marriage with Vlasta Sula on April 16, 1934, in Fayetteville. Mrs. Halamicek preceded him in death.

Mr. Halamicek was a member of Lodge 179, Warrenton.

Surviving are two daughters and sonsin-law, Dorothy and Johnnie Naiser of LaGrange and Connie and John Stanley of Fayetteville; one son and daughter-inlaw, Ben and Billie Halamicek of Columbus; one sister, Bertha Lancaster of Lometa; ten grandchildren; 13 greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone, express our most sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother, E.J. GEISTMAN, who passed away Monday, May 26, 1997, in a Temple hospital.

Services for Mr. Geistman, 74, of Cyclone were at 10 a.m. Friday, May 30 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone with the Rev. Charles Davis officiating.

Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, May 29 at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple.

He was born in Cyclone to Adolph Geistman and Elsie Kosel Geistman. He was a resident of the Cyclone community all of his life and was a graduate of Rosebud High School. He married Leveda Bruggman on January 18, 1944, and later married Mildred Hoffman Bruggman. He was a farmer and worked for Cyclone Gin and for auction barns in Temple and Cameron. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and member and former president of SPJST Lodge 24,

Cyclone at Flag Hall.

Survivors are his wife, Mildred Bruggman Geistman of Cyclone; two sons, Reginald Geistman of Round Rock and Patrick Geistman of Austin; one daughter, Patricia Schneider of Cyclone; one brother, Arthur Geistman of Fort Worth; two sisters, Margaret Spencer of Fort Worth and Evelyn Geistman of Corsicana; three grandchildren; six stepchildren; and several step-grandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek, No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership wish to express our sincere and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, G.H. "GIBBY" GERDES, who passed away January 7, 1997, in Stevens Nursing Home in Yoakum, Texas, at the age of 83 years.

He was born on August 22, 1913, in Hallettsville to Victor and Mary Kunitz Gerdes. On June 11, 1935, he was united in marriage to Lucille Hemmi in Hallettsville.

He was a former county auditor for Lavaca and Gonzales Counties, was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville, Knights of Columbus Council No. 2433, and former member of the Hallettsville Volunteer Fire Department and Lions. Club.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Hernmi Gerdes; a daughter, Judy Evans of Hallettsville; a son, G.H. "Gibbo" Gerdes, Jr. of Luling; a sister, Mildred O'Brien of Hallettsville; a brother, Victor B. Gerdes of New Jersey; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, January 8 at Kubena Funeral Home. The body lay in state at the funeral home until 1 p.m. Thursday, January 9, when it was taken to Sacred Heart Church in Hallettsville where services were conducted at 2 p.m. The Rev. John Peters officiated. Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville.

For Czechs, food means memories .. .

Food helps create special family occasions. What we eat determines what and who we are-especially if we have Czechoslovak ancestry. Food also is determined by where we live and how we live. Many recipes are best described as straightforward, simple, tasty, and nourishing. The essence of Czechoslovak food came from gardens and farms in Europe such as pork, cabbage, and fruit from trees. From these staples of nature, for example, comes the popular national dinner menu of pork and dumplings with gravy and sauerkraut.

The early pioneers in this country ate what they had on hand, and memories attached to those foods are now embodVestnik

ied in memories of "the lean years."

Soups, popular at midday as well as for supper, are made with staple foods or milk, meat, and vegetables. Breads show preference for the old-fashioned rye.

Many dumplings are truly Czechoslovak speCialities. Dumplings are plain as well as made with vegetables and fruits, and are popular side dishes, as are potato and sauerkraut dishes, rice and noodles.

Food, to many Czechoslovaks with a sense of culture, involves a legacy, handed down from past generations and given to future generations. When people enjoy being together, "breaking bread" is a sharing time. In fact, every meal together is a celebration of sorts.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club Reports on June Meeting

Dear Readers, The Snook Youth Club had a meeting on June 4. The meeting was well-attended. We discussed the Snookfest and YAD. After that, Ms. Melynda Giesenschlag talked to us about the Snookfest and all the activities that were going to happen at the Snookfest. We discussed new charities for July such as bringing two dozen cookies for Snook Vacation Bible School, craft supplies for Snook VBS, and canned food for Brazos Food Bank.

Our next meeting will be July 3 at 6:30 p.m.

Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club had their meeting on June 4 at the park. We decorated baby food jars to look like frogs and filled them with peppermints for Father's Day. We also discussed our float and water booth for the Snook Fest, which both turned out to be a great success. Then, Ms. Melynda Giesenschlag talked to us about the Snook Fest and all the fun activities.

Then, we had sodas. Thank you, Granny and Paw Paw Junek, for the sodas.

Queen's Notebook Dear SPJST Readers, Once again, after days of rain the sun shined bright. It was again time for an SPJST Royalty appearance. We met SPJST State King Justin Engelke and State Duke Douglas Galler at the annual Ennis Polka Festival Parade on Saturday, May 31. We rode in a 1997 Ford Mustang convertible, driven by Howard Leshikar, SPJST President. Douglas and my sister, Krystle, walked in front of the car carrying the SPJST banner.

Later in the afternoon, we were introduced by David Slovak at the SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. I would like to thank Lodge 25 for all their hospitality and for making us feel welcome during our visit. My mom also met the 1969 State Duchess from Ennis.

On Friday evening, we attended the opening ceremonies at the SPJST Hall and watched the selection of Festival King and Queen. Ricky Hoff and Annette Seay of Waco were the best polka dancers. Ricky is a longtime friend of our family.

Our next and final royalty appearance will be the SPJST 100th Anniversary Best Fest on July 12 and 13 at the Bell County Expo. We hope to see all of you there.

Various vendors will be set up offering a range of Czech glassware, arts and crafts. For our younger members and friends, there will also be a petting zoo, moonwalk, clowns, Darth Vader, barrel rides, horse-drawn carriage rides, face painting, pony rides and other small rides. Barbecue co -Off

Local lodges and youth clubs are encouraged to reserve their free booth space at the SPJST Bestfest and 100th Anniversary Celebration set for July 12 and 13 at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton. The area will be approximately 10' x 10'. Tables and chairs can be rented from the Expo Center and additional space will be available at the rate of $50 per day for a 10' x 10' booth. Paid spaces are also available to lodge members with something to sell or promote.

Barbecue cookers are encouraged to register their teams to compete in the Centennial Barbecue Cook-Off. Both member and non-member cookers will be competing for trophies and cash prizes in three categories: beef brisket, pork ribs and chicken.

Golfers are encouraged for register their teams to compete in the Centennial Golf Tournament. The tournament, which will take place on Saturday, July 12, will be played at the Sammon's Park Golf Course in Temple.

There is a $40 per player registration fee and each team is required to have at least one SPJST member on the team.
