SVU Schedules AImpressive Meet SPJST Hosts to SVU Conference at July 12 and 13 Bestfest in Belton

The SPJST 100th anniversary celebration is set to take place July 12 and 13 at the Bell County Expo Center , in Belton, Texas. One of the events that has generated a lot of interest is the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) conference that will be taking place in conjunction with the Bestfest. This past week, I had the opportunity to visit with SVU President Miloslav Rechcigl and learn more about his society and their upcoming meeting.

A retired scientist, Dr. Rechcigl was one of the founders of SVU. Since its inception in 1958, the SVU has grown into a respected international organization with chapters in major cities around the world.

According to Dr. Rechcigl, the SVII wanted to provide a forum for the free development of Czechoslovak culture in exile and make the world aware of the Czech and Slovak cultural traditions which date back more than a thousand years.

Following the end of the communist regime in 1989, the SVU's functions greatly expanded. Now, in addition to its original mission, the Society has become a bridge between Czech and Slovak professionals and those in other countries.

The Society has approximately 2,000 members, including such notable figures as Czech President Vaclav Havel and novelist Milan Kundera.

Admission to the SVU Annual Meeting will be free to SPJST members, said Dr. Rechcigl. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear presentations on a wide range of issues relating to Czech culture. The program will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Barbecue Local lodges and youth clubs are Cook-Off encouraged to reserve their free booth space at the SPJST Bestfest and 100th Anniversary Celebration set for July 12 and 13 at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton. The area will be approximately 10' x 10'. Tables and chairs can be rented from the Expo Center and additional space will be available at the rate of $50 per day for a 10' x 10' booth. Paid spaces are also available to lodge members with something to sell or promote.

Golf Tournament Golfers are encouraged to start registering their teams to compete in the Centennial Golf Tournament. The tournament, which will take place on Saturday, July 12, will be played at the Sammon's Park Golf Course in Temple.

There is a $40 per player registration fee and each team is required to have at least one SPJST member on the team.

Local lodges and business owners take note: Tournament sponsors are available at the rate of $50 per hole.

Barbecue cookers are encouraged to start registering their teams to compete in the Centennial Barbecue Cook-Off. Both member and non-member cookers will be competing for trophies and cash prizes in three categories: beef brisket, pork ribs and chicken.

Tarok Tournament Tarok players are encouraged to start registering to compete in the Centennial Tarok Tournament. The tournament, which will take place at the Bell County Expo Center, is open to all SPJST members and non-members over the age of 18.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville Reports on Picnic The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge 1 met on Sunday, June 1, 1997, at 11 a.m. at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill for their quarterly meeting and annual joint picnic with the Fayette County Czech Heritage Society with approximately 45 members and guests in attendance.

Everyone enjoyed the covered dish luncheon—"a real smorgasbord." The variety of all the delicious food and the breezes of the "norther" which blew in the day before made it quite a pleasant day for an outdoor affair. Entertainment was provided by the Fayette Czech Singers with audience participation.

During the business meeting, President Buddy Polansky stated that the SPJST Lodge 1 property is under an oil, gas, and mineral lease but to date have not received any royalties on the six acres.

In reference to SPJST Scholarships, Jennifer Minarcik, daughter of Alvin and Brenda Minarcik, received a $500 scholarship from the Supreme Lodge which was presented to her at high school graduation.

Clarence Matula presented Buddy Polansky an exhibit of a brief history, in laminated form, of Father Vanicek which

was prepared by Amos Pavlik, first president of the Fayette County Czech Heritage Society. He read through it briefly highlighting the time Father Vanicek was priest at Fayetteville's St. John's Catholic Church.

Helen Mikus, on behalf of the Fayette Czech Heritage Society, thanked SPJST Lodge 1 for letting the Fayette Czech Singers and Dancers use the SPJST Hall for practices, providing heating and cooling. She also stated that a "momento" would be presented to the lodge at a later date.

Polansky asked if the Fayette Czech Singers would like to perform with other choral groups at Belton in celebrating SPJST's 100th Anniversary, and he would like confirmationas soon as possible. Everyone was again reminded of the SPJST Cookbooks which are available at the Fayetteville Museum.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Reports on une Meeting Hi! Brother Robert Dobecka called our meeting to order on Friday evening, June 6 with the youth club leading the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag, The roll was called with all officers in attendance.

Sister Georgia Soukup gave her report of 24 present at our meeting, including guest, Sister Barbara Rosenkranz, State FAC. Everyone was welcomed and it was extra special once again to have had Barbara with us.

Sister Barbara Hykel read minutes from two previous meetings and they were approved as read. Brother George Straten gave his report, mostly verifying and getting "yeses" from volunteers on helping with all the various functions of our upcoming picnic. Our picnic will be held at Lodge 6, Cottonwood on Sunday, July 20, starting at 11:30 a.m. with the serving of our delicious meal of fried chicken and sausage with all the trimmings. Other activities and events will begin at 1 p.m. and continue through the afternoon. Mark your calendars and plan to come out and join us for lots of food and fun and fellowship. A raffle is also being held that day with lots of nice items, Tickets are now available from any member or you can write us for some

books. Books sell for $5 each, giving a person six chances per book.

Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurer's report with approval. She also gave the youth club report. Sister Peggy said all the youth have been busy working on their YAD projects. She encouraged all that could to please attend the District Three Youth Achievement Day on June 29 at Lodge 66, Linden Hall in Elm Mott, and see all the talent and crafts the youth work so hard on to present and compete. Sister Peggy also mentioned that they still have plenty of cookbooks for sale at $10 each as a youth club fund raiser. The youth club of Lodge 6, Cottonwood will also have a booth at Belton. So go by and see them and buy a Czech angel or pin cushion or more.

Sister Lydia Dobecka, FAC, gave her report. She welcomed Sister Barbara Rosenkranz, State FAC. Sister Dobecka also mentioned that Lodge 24 was having their 100th Anniversary Celebration on July 4. She passed out new "acts" calendars to everyone and also presented certificates to those that were not at our last meeting. Sister Lydia also presented something else—a very nice SPJST pin to Sister Stella Perez for her recommendation of two new members. I was surprised when this happened. It was very nice and I plan on wearing it proudly.

Our meeting this month was honored again with Brothers Jerry Kucera and Johnnie Krizan as speakers. They are our District Sales Representative and Director, respectively. It is always nice to have them with us. Brother Krizan men-

1997 Leadership Grant Winners In 1996, the Supreme Lodge separated the Scholarship Program into two different programs — the General Scholarship Program and the SPJST . Leadership Grant. The General Scholarship Program is based upon academic achievement and the SPJST Leadership Grant is based upon academic achievement plus involvement in the youth area. The SPJST Leadership Grant is funded by the Supreme Lodge nlicating

$10,000 into the fund which allows for twenty $500 grants. The criteria used for this fund is 40 percent grades; 40 percent youth involvement; and 20 percent recommendations. Nine of the grants are already set aside for the SPJST King and Queen and for i1 District Merit Winners, leaving 11 open positions to be filled to complete the tweni ■ rants. Congratulations to this year's ten winners.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, June 18, 1997 tioned that the first recipient of our lodge to receive the membership incentive pin was Sister Stella Perez. He encouraged more members to turn in names for new membership policies as an incentive towards a Platinum Award at year's end but also during the 1997 SPJST Centennial Membership Drive. It only takes two new members to qualify for the beautiful 100th SPJST Centennial Club pin, so get those names turned in to a sales representative or your local lodge.

Sister Lydia Dobecka gave a report for Sister Hattie Kaska as she was unable to attend due to a bad cold. A card was sent to Sister Willie Mae Schuetz as she had fell and broke an arm. We all also learned that Brother George and Sister Lucille Sulak were in an accident, but they were not hurt seriously. We all wish them well in the days ahead.

Birthdays for the month of June were Sister Dorothy Kucera and Sister Georgie Skerik. "Happy Birthday" to these two ladies and to all having a birthday this month.

The ladies of the lodge were thanked for the meal, which was actually foot-long hot dogs with all the trimmings and desserts.

The Father's Day cookie was pretty.

Door prizes were drawn. The $5 door prize was won by Brother Ray Perez. A special Father's Day prize donated by Brother Ray and Sister Stella Perez was won by Brother Robert Schiemenz.

Show and tell was presented by local lodge member, Brother Al Soukup, which was interesting as usual. He had a Scimitar sword, which he found and brought from Germany back in 1953.

This sword had arabic writings on it with a date of 1529 or 1579, making it over 400 years old. He also brought the huge Mastadon elephant tooth that he had brought once before for those who never got to view it. I bet he brought it especially for Sister Barbara Rosenkranz to see. I could have sworn that I heard her ask Brother Al if it was his! You know what I mean. I'm anxious to see what his next show and tell will be.

The meeting was adjourned until our next meeting, which will be Sunday, July 6 at 2 p.m. with an evening meal served.

Everyone should keep in mind that Lodge 6, Cottonwood has been planning their 100th Anniversary Celebration. It is to take place at the lodge hall on August 17. An itinerary will be published soon.

As one of our projects in the making with a deadline for items as June 21 is a souvenir booklet. Anyone wishing to place an ad, article or family history in our 100th Anniversary booklet needs to get it mailed in order for our committee to receive it by June 21 for processing at our publishers. It can be mailed to P.O. Box 10, West, Texas 76691, along with payment or given to any lodge member.

Lodge 17, New Tabor hosts their Seventh Annual Tarok Tournament on Saturday, July 19, 1997 at the lodge hall in New Tabor. Lodge 17, New Tabor is located east of Caldwell, off Highway 36.

Take FM 166 three miles to County Road 225 (sign says Hus Encampment) and then one-half mile to the lodge hall.

Registration for the tournament begins at 8:00 a.m. with play scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. The $15 entry fee includes a noon meal, snacks and prizes. Players are encouraged to pre-register. President Brian Vanicek. He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for our deceased members, namely Mr. E.J. Geistman who through the years served our lodge as an officer and chairman and in many other ways.

Our sympathy goes out to his family.

Reports were given by Treasurer Penny Coots, Bar Chairman David Nauert, Hall Manager and Ticket Chairman Bobby Hoelscher, and Cleanup Chairman Patsy Baker. Patsy Baker told the membership that she is giving up the cleanup. We want to thank her for all these years she did this and we understand why she is giving up the job for she is our youth leader which is a challenge and she also has a child under one years old plus her other children. She introduced us to Robbie Nolen who is willing to do the cleanup. The membership is hiring her for three months to see if she qualifies and if it is something she really wants to do for it is a big job.

Our Mother's Day meal was a success because of all the workers. Thanks to all of you and thanks to Food Chairpersons Barbara Macek and Margaret Mikeska, Cake Chairperson Patsy Baker, Barbecue Chairmen Wilbert Mikeska and Terry Coots, to all people who donated cakes and mostly to all you people who supported us by coming out to eat.

Under old business, we again discussed our Fourth of July and 100 Years Celebration for Lodge 24. It should be a fun day, so make plans to come out and celebrate with us on Friday, July 4, 1997.

Mower and Bike Parade At 11 a.m., the" Best Lil' Mower and Bike Parade" begins. "It's something different — a chance for both youngsters and adults to display their red, white and blue spirit and 'parade' their bikes and mowers in a short, patriotic procession," says parade traffic controller Richard Greger of Rosebud. To ensure the safety of little patriots, the parade will take place on lodge grounds.

Timmy Yummies Light food items will be available throughout the day, including hamburgers, which will be available starting at 11 a.m. A barbecue dinner catered by Cyclone Corral, will also be available, starting at 5 p.m.

Games and Entertainment At 1 p.m., SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone will host a short program, honoring past lodge officers and 50-year members.

This will be followed by various indoor games and outdoor contests and free entertainment. Area cheerleading squads are set to perform at 3 p.m., folLodge lowed by musical entertainment, including a special appearance by "Elvis" at 6 p.m. Evening indoor entertainment features a free dance from 7 - 11 p.m. with music by the Granger Polka Boys.

The event marks the 100th Anniversary of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone and will feature a full day of family-oriented fun Lodge and entertainment. Flag Hall is located 12 miles east of Temple, past Zabcikville; exit at the blinking light to FM 485 and then one mile to FM 964.

24, Cyclone Readying for July 4th Celebration

5K Fun Run/Walk Activities commence at 9 a.m. with a 5K Fun Run/Walk. "That's only about three miles," says race official Brian Vanicek. "It's a nice course, a fun workout and a chance to work up a good appetite." The din/walk entry fee is $10.

Race entrants will receive a colorful race tee-shirt. Olympic-style medals will be presented to the top three male and top three female finishers in each age division. Divisions are as follows: 6-12; 13-18; 19-29; 30 - 39; 40 - 49; 50 and up. Runners-who register on or before June 18 can pick up their tee-shirts starting at 7:30 a.m. on race day. Kolache and Bread Contest Also starting at 9 a.m. is the "Dobry Den (Good Morning) Kolache and Bread Contest." The contest is open to bakers of any age and there is no entry fee Bakers will be competing in five categories: Fruit Kolache, Sausage Kolache, Miscellaneous Kolache, Sweet Breads and Breads. There is a limit of five entries per person Each entry consists of a tray of six items of the same flavor. "Even if you aren't a baker, come on out and enjoy an Independence Day kolache brunch," encourages contest official Melanie Zavodny. Cash prizes and rosette ribbons will be awarded for each of the five categories. The

Members of Lodge 40, If you plan to attend the Family Day on Sunday, June 29, the lodge will furnish fried chicken and members are asked to bring a side dish or salad. 63, Sweet Home Meets June 22 Lodge

Lodge 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and social on June 22, 1997, at the Green-Dickson Pavilion (see enclosed map) in Shiner, beginning at 12 noon. A social hour will be followed by a dinner of barbecue pork ribs and all the trimmings. Everything will be furnished by the lodge with the exception of the sweets, which members are asked to bring.

A short meeting will follow. A special

Lodge 63, Sweet Home to Meet in Shiner Lodge 63, Sweet Home holds its monthly meeting and social on Sunday, June 22 at the GreenDickson Pavillion in Shiner. All members are encouraged to attend the event which starts at 12 p.m. and will include a barbecued pork rib dinner with all the trimmings.

Flag Day observance will be held and our 50-year pin recipients will be honored.

Door prizes will be awarded and anyone present with a birthday in April, May or June will be eligible to win a birthday caked baked by Annie Zabransky.

We are holding our barbecue dinner in a different location this year so everyone is asked to note the change. The pavilion has tables, benches, rest room facilities and a playground for the kids. 79, Corpus Christi Reports on May Meeting Lodge

The monthly meeting was called to order by President Jerry Sijansy on Sunday, May 18. A moment of silence was observed in memory of deceased member, Brother Walter Hundl.

Treasurer Milly Elzner was absent; she was visiting her sister who was ill in Detroit, Michigan. Her husband, Brother Jerry Elzner, read the financial report in her place.

Sister Barbara Rosenkranz presented Sister Della Elzner and Sister Edna Voldan with certificates and pins for their fraternal acts. Seems that they were left out when the awards were made in April.

Sister Rosenkranz spoke on volunteerism and how important all the fraternal work that is done by members needs to be reported. She encouraged everyone to attend the 100th Anniversary celebration on July 12 and 13.

Secretary Jill Sijansky read all the correspondence. Part of this was information on the different activities for the 100th Anniversary on July 12 and 13.

There is a flyer on the bulletin board.

There was a discussion about planning to

go and who can go. They need to make motel reservations soon. The members voted and approved on taking an ad in the souvenir booklet at Lodge 24, Cyclone on July 4 and Lodge 6, Cottonwood on August 7. A half-page ad in both souvenir books was approved.

After discussion, members voted to go ahead to sponsor a dance on Sunday, August 31, commemorating the SPJST 100th Anniversary and also the 100th Anniversary of Majek's Orchestra. The dance will be from 3 to 7 p.m. with music by the Majek's at the SPJST Lodge 79Sokol Hall on 5502 Kostoryz Road. We invite everyone to come join us in this celebration.

The monthly donation of $50 will be made to the telethon, Driscoll Children's Miracle Network, which is coming up soon.

Before the meeting, a delicious dinner was served by the men. Everyone certainly enjoyed the Mother's Day dinner.

The lodge furnished the meat and members brought the rest—veggies, salads, dessert. It was great! Thanks, guys, for the work!

Brother Jerry Elzner invited all to attend the Southern District Sokol Slet which is in Corpus Christi starting Friday, June 6. Saturday, June 7 is competition, and on Sunday, June 8 there is a program with admission of $1.50. On Sunday, there is also a barbecue dinner.

There were quite a few door prizes donated by Jerry Elzner and Lodge 79.

81, Needville Reports on May Meeting

The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 81 in Needville was held Sunday, May 18, 1997, at the lodge hall. There was a total of 39 members and guests present.

Although it was a week after Mother's Day when the meeting was held, there were two mothers honored. The first gift was a beautiful basket filled with a large assortment of fruits and also some candy which was donated by Elsie Brdecka.

Each mother in attendance was eligible for the prize. All of the mothers' names were put into a box for the drawing.

Elsie had the honor to pick the lucky

8/ViSTNIK—Wednesday, June 18, 1997 name. The winning mother was Mary Ann Fojtik. The other prize was a vase filled with potpourri and was donated by Adolph and Delores Macha. In order to win this prize you had to be the oldest mother present. This winning mom was Mary Matcek. Mary was the lucky name for the day. Congratulations to both moms. As we know, all mothers are winners in their own special way. Thanks to Elsie and the Machas for remembering our moms.

At twelve noon, delicious baked and fried chicken, prepared by Darwin's Restaurant in Needville, was served. The meal blessing was said by President Macha. Thanks to all of the gracious ladies for preparing all of the scrumptious side dishes of vegetables, salads, and desserts. Thanks to Darlene Blinka and her fine group of ladies for having everything ready to be served at noontime.

Also thanks to President Macha for picking up the chicken.

President Macha called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. Willie Mae Kuykendall led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our vice president, Vincent Newman, was not present for the meeting. Our secretary, Willie Mae Kuykendall, read the minutes from our April meeting and they were approved as read. Benita Walzel, the treasurer, presented her report which met approval as well. The Special Fund Treasurer, Gilbert Walzel, read the schedule of events for the coming month. He then gave his report which was accepted as read.

There was good news again this month because there were no deaths to report.

Our sick list continues to grow. Added to the list is Anna Prihoda. Others include Johnnie Blinka, Adeline Bacica, Clara Mazac, Jerry Blinka, Rosie Schwettmann, Mildred Vecera, Charlie Pesak, Lloyd Zwahr, Emil Pollock, and Gladys Maresh. May God restore your health. Get-well wishes are sent to all members and anyone else who is ill.

Gilbert Walzel reported that the disabled signs have been replaced at the hall.

A big thank you was expressed to Darlene Blinka for cleaning and pressing the curtain that is used on the stage during our meetings.

Guests at the meeting included District Five Director Louis Hanus and his wife Oleta. Brother Hanus talked briefly about interest rates and the schedule of events for the upcoming 100th anniversary of the SPJST. Another guest at the meeting was Willie Mae Nesvadba of Rosenberg.

We were delighted to have all three of you and hope you can attend our social and meeting every month. You are always welcome.

A happy birthday wish was expressed to Ben Tydlacka. Ben was 83 years young on May 21. Many, many more happy birthdays, Mr. Ben! Thanks to the Alvin Blinkas, Edwin Susans, Edward Kubans, Gilbert Walzels, and Elsie Brdecka for dividing and distributing the hard bingo cards. Cards were given to St. Michael's Catholic Church, St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Immanuel United Church of Christ, Needville United Methodist Church, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville, also to Autumn Hills Convalescent Center in Richmond, and Fort Bend Nursing Home in Rosenberg.

In the correspondence department, a memo was read from Gene McBride about the Centennial Barbecue Cookoff at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton on July 11-12, 1997. Forms for the cookoff are available from President Macha. It

was voted upon to purchase a one-fourth page ad in the Lodge 6, Cottonwood souvenir booklet for the 100 Celebration to be held on August 17, 1997.

Thank-you notes were read from the Needville Senior Citizens Program and the Autumn Hills Convalescent Center pcirtaining to the bingo cards.

Congratulations to many of our young lodge members who are doing outstanding work. Cheryl Newman, the daughter of the Vincent Newmans, maintained a 4.0 average at Texas A&M. Also, Amanda Newman, whose parents are the Vincent Newmans, graduated from Needville High School last week in the top ten of her class. Bradley Vallet maintained a B average for the second semester at A&M. He is the young man who suffered the bad accident with his horse.

Jason Vallet received a 4.0 average at his technical school. Melissa Vallet participated with the 4-H Club at the Needville Youth Fair. Melissa did well with all of her entries. The parents of the Vallet children are Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Vallet, Jr. Also, Miranda Wiles entered a Mother's Day contest, sponsored by KMart. In 30 words or less, she had to write an article why she thinks her mom is the best. She won the first prize which was a dozen red roses. Her mom is Sandra Wiles. Needless to say, Sandra was very happy and very proud of her daughter. This shows we have a very talented group of people in our midst.

Keep up the good work. Hard work always pays off! If there are any young lodge members who deserve recognition that you know about, please let me know and I will get the information in my article. I want to let all readers know about our future leaders.

In reading my report from last year at this time, we were praying for rain, now we have to do the opposite.

Chicken-fried steak will be on the menu for the June meeting. Thanks to Olga Polasek who graciously donated money for the meat. This was very kind of you and the lodge greatly appreciates your donation.

School is out. Please watch out for the youngsters. We hope everyone will have a safe, fun-filled summer. Moms, how many tines have you heard your child say he is bored already?

We hope everyone had a nice and safe Memorial weekend. Let's remember what this weekend is really about. Keep all the veterans, both men and women, in our prayers. They are the ones who fought for our country and the thousands and thousands who gave their lives—

sometimes we tend to forget these important individuals.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the people in Jarrell, Texas, who suffered devastating losses in life and property. May the Lord give you strength to continue on.

133, San Antonio Reports on May Meeting Lodge

Lodge 133 held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, May 18 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Jarolyn Popp.

The SPJST 100th Anniversary Celebration will be held in Belton during the second weekend in July. We will not have a meeting in June due to Father's Day and have cancelled our meeting in July due to the 100th Anniversary Celebration. Our next regular meeting will be Sunday, August 17 at 2 p.m.

The FAC report was read by t,renda Cook. Veterans were recognized and presented with a flag to commemorate Memorial Day. The veterans were Emil Kutra, Howard Kieschnick, Sidon Tumis, Henry Linhart, Frank Tumis, Henry Hermis, and Joe Braunagel (honorable mention).

172, Pasadena Reports on May Meeting

On Wednesday, May 28, 1997, Lodge 172, Pasadena held their regular monthly meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Robert Mayfield at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed.

The Entertainment Committee Chairman Mary Byers told everyone about the Mother's Day Dance we had on the Saturday before Mother's Day. President Robert Mayfield reminded everyone that June 15 was Flag Day. It was suggested that we should put up a flag pole so that we would be able to fly the flag on Flag Day, Memorial Day, July Fourth, and other special days. After a short discussion, a vote was taken to put up a flag pole.

The meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m.

County Czech Heritage Society Meets

Wharton

The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society met at the First Christian Church on Tuesday, June 3 at 7 p.m. Sixty mem-

bers were present.

President Marie Matcek opened the meeting with the members by saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, followed by singing the Czech National Anthem "Kde Domov Muj" ("Where Is My Home") accompanied by Ethel Meek on the piano. Merle Adamcik gave the prayer.

President Matcek introduced several guests as well as a new member who moved to El Campo from the (then) Czech Republic several years ago.

Virginia Balusek, Second Vice President and Program Chairperson, introduced the speakers for the evening, Laurie and Wayland Bram from El Campo, who are missionaries in the Czech Republic. Laurie and Wayland were recently married in May and plan to go to the Czech Republic in September to Blansko in the Moravian area near Brno.

They have dedicated themselves to he witness as missionaries for three years in the Moravian area. They will spend the first year learning the Czech language.

They are sponsored by the Christian Outreach International program as fulltime missionaries. They attended the Performing Arts School in Blansko and also witness through drama, music and sports. Wayland plays the guitar and gives free guitar lessons to young people.

Mrs. Bram stated that one of the interesting ways to reach Czech young people is to speak English with someone. One of the most rewarding experiences they had were visiting handicapped children and the elderly in nursing homes. The Christian Outreach International is a nondenominational organization and is supported by donations.

Ethel and Kenneth Meek showed a display of ladies' hand-tooled leather hand bags made in the Czech Republic by a young lady who was their guest in October.

Gladys Rod, Secretary, read the minutes from the previous meeting. She stated that 20 members from the Wharton County Chapter attended the state meeting in West on April 19.

Rita Vanek, Treasurer, gave the treasurer's report. She announced that everyone is invited to attend the two-day celebration of the 100th Anniversary of SPJST in Temple on July 12 and 13 at the Bell County Expo Center.

Laverne Bacak, Librarian of the El Campo Library, invited all members to attend the open house of the new library on June 18. She stated that one of the interesting rooms has access to genealogy and many books on histories of different nationalities.

President Matcek made special emphasis to everyone to attend the state meeting of the State Czech Heritage Society on November 8 which will be held in Hillje, Texas. The Wharton County Chapter are hosts for the meeting.

The next state meeting will be in Richmond on July 19 in the George Memorial Library, at 9:30 a.m.

Six Camp Set for June 20 - 22 District

Dear Vestnik Readers, District Six Camp will be the weekend of June 20 to 22 at Camp Lone Star in LaGrange. Items you will need to bring are bed sheets, a pillow, towels, clothes, bathing suit, beach towel, sunscreen, toiletries, good walking shoes, and a flash light. Our party theme for Saturday night will be the 50s so please dress accordingly.

I ask that all campers arrive Friday at Camp Lone Star by 3:15 that afternoon.

Please don't be late. We will be departing from camp Sunday at 11 a.m. Please note we will not be eating lunch on Sunday.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 9 Youth Club had their monthly meeting on June 4 at the Snook City Park. We had crafts, our meeting, and picked up trash before Snookfest.

Dear Readers, On Saturday, May 17, I participated in the Tri-County Junior Senior Olympics held at the KC Hall in Hallettsville.

Other Lodge 4 youth club members participating were Elizabeth Vahalik and,, Trevor Scott. We each teamed up with a senior citizen from Southern Manor Nursing Home in Hallettsville.

My partner was senior citizen Ed Hajek and we made a great team. We played volleyball, ring toss, and chicken toss. Our volleyball team placed third overall and we each received a ribbon.

And if yoti are wondering, our volleyball game was played sitting down and we played with a beach ball over a lower net.

It was great and I really enjoyed being part of this event.

Dear Readers, I got to play games with Mrs. Pizalle, a senior citizen from Southern Manor Nursing Home in Hallettsville, at the annual Tri-County Junior Senior Olympics. We played sit-down volleyball, ring toss and chicken toss (it was a plastic chicken). It was lots of fun and my partner was a very sweet lady.

Youth Club Reports on June Meeting The June 1, 1997, meeting of Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club was called to order at 2:15 p.m. by President Craig Dorotik.

Treasurer Jason Kaspar led'the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. There were 25 members and 11 adults.

Guests introduced were our district youth counselor, Marcy Dorotik.

The minutes were read and approved.

Jason Kaspar gave the treasurer's report. Fund raising plans for this month are our 100 Year Anniversary Cookbooks.

The charity project for this month will be Father's Day cards for patients in El Campo Memorial Hospital.

Our youth leader Lisa Bubela reported about summer camp at Lone Star Camp in LaGrange on June 20 and 22 and our Youth Achievement Day on July 20.

Youth members enjoyed having snowballs and cookies for refreshments.

Refreshments were served by T.J., Brandon and Steven Drapela.

The after-meeting activities were rolling and tying magazines, filling bags with candy and getting cards ready for the ECMH patients.

The next youth club meeting will be on July 6 at Taiton Community Center.

At the June 9 meeting, we had only nine members present. The mother lodge honored the graduates for 1997. There were four lodge members graduating.

They were Jon Gersbach, Jeff Faichtinger, Jenny Marek, and Gary Skrabanek. Jeff and Gary were longtime youth club members. Gary was presented with a gift certificate from the youth club, as he has remained a youth club member since he was six years old. We will miss you both.

After the covered dish meal, our meeting was called to order by the new youth club president, Shannon Pechal, at 7:20 p.m. The register and the minutes were read by the youth leader, in the absence of the secretary. Correspondence included a thank-you card from the family of Martha Klusacek for the donation to the scholarship fund by the youth club in her memory. The treasurer's report was read by the vice president, in the absence of the treasurer. Donna Baca, youth leader, read and discussed the Rules of Conduct with those present.

On June 22, Youth Achievement Day will be at Seaton Star Hall. Our youth club will serve the noon meal. It will consist of a barbecue sandwich and chips for $2. We need all youth club members to help with this, even if you are not entering YAD. The annual swim party will be on June 27 at Walker Pool in Temple. We want to invite all Lodge 47 youth to attend.

Come see what fun the youth club has, and maybe join us at our next meeting.

The youth club members may also bring a friend. Each family is to bring sandwiches, chips and/or snacks to the swim party. Hope to see you all there!

Donna reported the District Two camp forms are due June 22. There will be a notary at YAD to notarize camp forms.

Donna also reported the District Two Six Flags trip will be August 16. She will need to know by July 26 who plans to go.

Non-SPJST members may go for a $10 bus fee, plus the ticket to the park.

The District Two swim party will be at Walker Pool on June 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. with the pre-camp meeting being held prior to swimming at 6:15 p.m. Our LITs, Mark Greger, Erin Skrabanek, and David Koslovsky, will need to attend this meeting.

San Angelo Youth Club Reports on May Meeting Lodge 160, San Angelo Youth Club met on May 31 at 9:30 a.m. in our youth leader's house. Ryan Jansa presided.

James Lehr, our secretary, read the roll call and the minutes from the previous meeting. Jennifer Block read the treasurer's report.

Betty Schwartz, our youth leader, gave her report. She reported on the cookbooks. We want to use the money we received for a special occasion. We decided to go to Pala Dura Canyon.

Betty discussed the Flag Essay Contest.

We received certificates of recognition for participating in the camp tee-shirt design contest.

We, as a club, decided to donate a cookbook to the Tom Green Library.

SPJST Best Fest is July 12 and 13. It is the 100-year anniversary for SPJST. There's going to be music, booths, and fun. LIT Camp is next weekend. Five members are planning to go. June 28 is our District YAD at the church hall. We discussed junior and senior talent.

The senior graduates are Ryan Jansa, James Lehr, Kristi Behrens, and Becky Schwertner. They were recognized for attending their last meeting. We had the election of officers.
