Get Involved Support Your Local Lodge Last week I had the opportunity to participate in a two-day fraternal workshop hosted by the NFCA (National Fraternal Congress of America) and IOF (International Order of Foresters) in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. In making my, travel arrangements, I bought a plane ticket from a local travel agency. Getting new members and inactive members involved is a challenge to fraternal benefit societies all over America.

Some are doing better than others. Based on what I heard in Pittsburg, I am happy to report that the SPJST is doing an admirable job in terms of meeting its fraternal commitment. In several instances, I was able share information about our lodge system and the constructive efforts that our lodges are making. In one of the workshop sessions, a sister representing another Texas-based fraternal complimented the SPJST for the "great job"

Good things seldom "just happen."

They take initiative, creativity, planning and dedication. District Three Director Johnnie Krizan provided me with a good example this last week when he stopped by to share information about Lodge 183, Arlington's recent "Giant Charity Dinner Giveaway." Lodge 183, Arlington provided the use of its lodge building and furnished the food for a community wide benefit dinner on behalf of ten different non-profit groups. In turn, the participating groups sold tickets to the event, generating revenue for their respective groups. The entire affair amounted to a win-win situation for the lodge and for a lot of groups in the community.

That's the kind of spirit - working together- that gets things done and makes a positive difference.

Active local lodges provide the basis for a strong Society. If you're a new member - or if you've been inactive please get involved. If you're a regular reader of the Vestnik letters and calendar section, you may have already noticed that quite a few lodges have been or will be hosting picnics, homecomings and other special events in the coming weeks and months. While there mdy not be any official "instructions" on how to get involved in your local lodge, SPJST summer time events provide wonderful opportunities for hands-on orientation.

Get involved. Have fun. Make a positive difference in your community.

Local lodges and youth clubs are encouraged to reserve their free booth space at the SPJST Bestfest and 100th Anniversary Celebration set for July 12 and 13 at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton. The area will be approximately 10' x 10'. Tables and chairs can be rented from the Expo Center and additional space will be available at the rate of $50 per day for a 10' x 10' booth. Paid spaces are also available to lodge members with something to sell or promote.

Barbecue Cook-Off Barbecue cookers are encouraged to start registering their teams to compete in the Centennial Barbecue Cook-Off. Both member and non-member cookers will be competing for trophies and cash prizes in three categories: beef brisket, pork ribs and chicken.

The meeting opened with the Supreme Lodge Members saying the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence in memory of deceased members.

Editor Vanicek was welcomed to the meeting by Chairman Vanek.

MINU'T'ES - The minutes were reviewed page by page. On page 153, under Library, Archives, and Museum, "Vice President Mikeska discussed investigating the possibility of setting up a separate foundation for the Library, Archives, and Museum with SPJST being in control. The Board for this foundation could be named by the delegates at the convention" is to be added.

For clarification on page 156, it was pointed out the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator could only receive one award under item one or two. A home office representative is only entitled to one award per lodge in a two year period.

On page 158, under Local Lodge Officers' Workshop, the last sentence of the first paragraph should read, "all of the past Supreme Lodge members will be invited to attend the Local Lodge Officers' workshop."

Director Broz moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to approve the minutes with the corrections. Motion carried unanimously.

She expressed her appreciation for the donation from SPJST and informed the Supreme Lodge that SPJST had been designated as a corporate donor by the Temple Ronald McDonald House. SPJST may be mentioned in USA Today due to being named a corporate sponsor.

LOCAL LODGE OFFICERS' WORKSHOP - Chairman Vanek requested input on observations of the Local Lodge Officers' Workshop. Several of the comments were: 1) the best workshop ever; 2) could each officer do a session and repeat it several times so members could visit more than one session; and 3) have the sections further apart. There was a discussion on where the workshop could be held if the attendance continues to increase.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, AND MUSEUM - During the first quarter of 1997 there was a total of 384 visitors to the museum. Two school groups visited the museum and one presentation was made in a school district by the museum curator.

100TH ANNIVERSARY - President Leshikar verbally presented a proposed schedule in response to a request from Director Bayer. Director Hanus presented information on a youth group from age eight to fifteen from the Houston area that he would like invited to the 100th Anniversary celebration.

President Leshikar reviewed information from the EXPO Center stating that only the EXPO Center can sell beer or alcoholic beverages. The EXPO Center will allow SPJST local lodges or youth clubs to earn 10 percent of sales by manning a food booth. There will be five of these booths available. Local lodges or youth clubs can sell ethnic foods and retain all proceeds from the sales.

Comptroller John Sharp has agreed to speak to the audience at 3:00 p.m., on Saturday afternoon. A receiving line will be available for members who wish to meet Mr. Sharp. An invitation has been sent inviting the President and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to attend the 100th Anniversary celebration.

Recess was taken from 11:30 a.m. until 1:25 p.m. During this time the Supreme Lodge Members attended a retirement party honoring former District II Director Willie Kohutek.

A barbecue cookoff has been scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 12.

There will be an entry fee for each team of $50.00. A golf tournament has also been scheduled for Saturday morning. There is an entry fee of $40.00 for each player and at least one member of each team has to be a member of SPJST.

4/VESTNIK-Wednesday, May 14, 1997 By common consent, it was decided to invite vendors and sell spaces to the vendors.

One space will be made available to each local lodge or to a local lodge youth club at no charge. The spaces will be at least ten by ten feet in size and SPJST is going to request the EXPO Center provide a table and two chairs for each space. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to make spaces available at a cost of $50.00 per space, per day, excluding SPJST local lodges or youth clubs.

Motion carried unanimously.

There is a video being prepared under the supervision of the Vice Presidents' Department for use during the 100th Anniversary. The video will be shown on a big screen television in the lobby area. Also in the lobby, there will be extra tabloids from the Temple Daily Telegram and an area where attendees can register for door prizes. A drawing will be held every hour on the hour from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on both days of the celebration. The winners do not have to be present to win.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that the sales for the 100th Anniversary cook books are going well. There have been approximately 5,300 books sold by the home office, local lodges, and youth clubs. There has been $4,000.00 donated to the Ronald McDonald House so far.

Director Vavra moved, seconded by Director Krizan, that the officers mail a tentative schedule of the 100th Anniversary activities and their locations to Board members within a week. Motion carried unanimously.

CALENDAR - The bids of the 1998 SPJST calendar will be opened during the July meeting. By common consent, it was decided to offer each lodge an opportunity to advertise one special event in the calendar.

FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR REPORT - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz was welcomed to the meeting. President Leshikar presented the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator's report which consisted of her travel and her appreciation for attending the Fraternal and Communication Section Mid-Year meeting. District VII at the Spring meeting recognized the $10,000 donation given by Mr. and Mrs. Myles Marek to the 100 Pennies Scholarship drive. The theme for the 1997 Local Lodge Incentive Program is "Volunteerism - the fountain of youth".

The Board specified the lodge visitation and tracking chart is to chart only the results of the local lodges selected by the president, vice president and director. The purpose of the chart is to keep track of recommendations and ideas and see what is working with the designated local lodges. There has to be intervention by either the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, or State Field Manager, or State Field Representative to be eligible for an award.

NEW PRODUCTS - Vice President Mikeska presented a letter from Actuary John Agee concerning the 20-year term plan. The insurance on the twenty year term would work like the ModTerm plan. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to approve the 20-year term plan that will convert to an ART at age 70 and remain in force until age 95, and to approve the modification of the ModTerm to renew into an ART at age 70 and remain in force to age 95. Motion carried unanimously.

STATE FIELD MANAGERS REPORT - State Field Manager McBride's report was reviewed. The accomplishments for each district were reported. Vice President Mikeska complimented State Field Manager McBride on doing an outstanding job.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported the following officer listings for 1997 have not been received from lodge 8, 32, 41, 82, 149, 151, 167, 181, or 188.

The IRS form 990/990T's are due in May and 44 lodges have responded to the home office concerning their 990/990T's.

DIRECT BILL - Financial Secretary Mikulas announced that all the lodges are now on direct bill and one lodge in District II is on payroll deduction.

The winner of the deer antler contest for the antlers with the widest spread was Bobby Poff, Jr. Jimmy Halfman and Bobby Poff, Jr. tied as winners for the antlers with the most points.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR REPORT - State Youth Director Lange's report was reviewed. The dates for the District Youth Achievement Day and the camp dates were presented. There was a proposal to start a Teen Ambassador program. The qualifications to be eligible for the award were presented to the Supreme Lodge with the State Youth Director making the final selection. Vice President Mikeska moved to authorize a Teen Ambassador program for a two year trial program. ,Motion seconded by President Leshikar. Voting in favor were: Vice President Mikeska and President Leshikar. Voting against were: Financial Secretary Mikulas, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Vavra, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Chairman Vanek, and Director Bayer.

Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Krizan, to set aside thirty minutes each year during the Leaders in Training Workshop and the Youth Club Officers Workshop for a survey to see what activities or changes the youth would like in the Youth Department and this information will be provided to the Supreme Lodge for consideration. Motion carried unanimously.

FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin read a letter from the Finance Committee to the Supreme Lodge recommending to increase the Youth Camp fund annual allocation by $2,000.00 making it $58,000.00. The Youth Camp Fund is commonly referred to as the District Youth Fund. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to accept the recommendation of the Finance Committee. Motion carried unanimously. The Finance Committee recommended that the salaries of the Officers, Legal Advisor, Editor, and Directors remain the same for the period of July 1, 1997, to June 30, 1998.

VESTNIK - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the subscription list for the Vestnik now stands at 9,977. The weekly postage amounts to approximately $1,800.00 and publishing costs amounts to $1,150.00 weekly.

AUDIT - The independent auditors of Jaynes, Reitmeier, Boyd and Therrell, P.C. began their audit on January 1, 1997, and will complete the audit by May 31, 1997.

A representative from the Texas Department of Insurance began auditing procedures on December 15, 1996. This audit is still being conducted.

LODGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Financial Secretary Mikulas recommended to the Supreme Lodge that since 1997 is SPJST's 100th Anniversary, any certificate for life insurance issued this year counts toward the incentive program. The guidelines for the incentive program are: 1. The definition of a new member was terminated so that all certificates issued during 1997 will count towards the lodge incentive program with the exception of annuity certificates.

2. Annuity certificates will count provided that the certificate holder is uninsurable.

3. Only the target premiums count towards premiums remitted on Universal Life certificates.

4. Certificates that are issued under the modified whole life plan will count towards the incentive program only to an amount equal to the traditional products issued.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to ratify the lodge incentive program. Motion seconded by Vice President Mikeska. Motion carried unanimously.

Chairman Vanek requested the July Supreme Lodge meeting agenda include a discussion on the employees' and officers' retirement plan.

COMPUTER - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported bids were taken and a new personal computer was purchased for the Legal Advisor's office. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to ratify the purchase, seconded by Director Hanus. Motion carried unanimously.

EDITOR'S REPORT - Editor Vanicek's report was reviewed. During the first quarter, the circulation of the Vestnik ranged from 9,805 to 10,095 with the number of photographs ranging from one to sixty-nine. The Editor is working with the Temple Daily Telegram on the tabloid for the 100th Anniversary.

Financial Secretary Mikulas informed the Supreme Lodge that currently SPJST is in the process of doing an upgrade to the software on the AS400 computer.

Editor Vanicek presented Communications Assistant Zavodny's report pertaining to her participation in the NFCA Communication and Fraternal Sections' Mid-Year meeting.

NEW LODGE - There was a discussion concerning the organizing of a new lodge in Hamilton County. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to organize a new lodge in Hamilton County, seconded by Director Klinkovsky. Motion carried unanimously:

loan modification program for one more year with the qualifications and stipulations remaining the same. The rate for the modified loan would be one-fourth of a percent above the regular real estate loan interest rate at that time. The 'cost of this modification would be $400.00 or one percent of 'The unpaid principal balance whichever is greater. Motion by Director Hanus, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, to extend the loan modification program for one year. Motion carried unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Broz, to place the new lodge in District III in compliance with by-law 45 (a). Motion carried unanimously. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to give the Vice President the authority to assign Hamilton County to any state field representative he chooses.

Motion carried unanimously.

DELINQUENCIES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented 28 loans that are delinquent. Of these loans, five are on a work out, fourteen loans are in bankruptcy or tax suit, and the remaining nine loans do not fit into any category. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to accept the recommendations for the delinquent loans. Motion seconded by Director Klinkovsky. Motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar reported Willie E. Kohutek had expressed his and Adeline's appre ciation for the retirement luncheon in his honor which was held the previous day.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to set up a loss reserve of $8,000.00 for the delinquent loans. Motion seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas. Motion carried unanimously.

MEMBER BENEFIT - President Leshikar requested for the Supreme Lodge to consider financing cars for our members. Automobile flancing would provide a benefit to the younger age members who are just getting out of school and also provide a higher yield for investments. There was a lengthy discussion about financing automobiles.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, for the officers to research the possibility of offering this as a member benefit and report back to the Supreme Lodge Members. Voting in favor were: President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Krizan, Director Hanus, Chairman Vanek, and Director Broz. Voting against were Director Bayer, Director Klinkovsky, and Director Vavra. Motion carried.

REO 194 - Secretary-Treasurer reported property located in Crosby, Texas, in Harris County had been foreclosed on The property has been listed for sale with Century 21 Realtors in Crosby. Director Hanus moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer; to authorize the officers and District V Director Hanus to have full authority to negotiate any offer on the property. Motion carried unanimously.

State Field Manager McBride and Vice President's Assistant Kathy Fritz made a presentation to the Board on the Universal Life proposal and reproposal software. These proposals will be required by the Texas Department of Insurance about the 1st of January, 1998.

Robert Dobecka, president and Al Soukup, vice president of Lodge 6 were welcomed to the meeting. Director Krizan presented a request from Lodge 6 for funds to be used to enlarge the kitchen and add on a patio to Lodge 6. Plans and specifications were presented for the Supreme Lodge Member's review. The Lodge 6 local officers were excused from the meeting. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to allocate $5,000.00 of the remaining funds to Lodge 6 in accordance with the bylaws of the 1988 Convention. These funds are available to help charter lodges and restore or update their original building. There would be $1,175.37 remaining in the fund after this allocation. Motion carried unanimously.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - President Leshikar moved to invite the District Youth Counselors to the July Supreme Lodge meeting and recommend the per diem comes from the District Youth Funds. Motion seconded by Vice President Mikeska and carried unanimously.

Recess was taken from 12:00 noon to 1:05 p.m.

AUTOMOBILE - President Leshikar expressed the need to purchase another automobile. The new vehicle would be a mid-size vehicle with the cost ranging from $13,000 to $14,000 so the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator could have a vehicle.

It was pointed out SPJST has eleven vehicles assigned to the officers and field people.

This includes the van which is primarily used by State Youth Director Lange and a Lumina which is used by the Editor and home office staff for errands. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, to take bids for a mid-size vehicle and present the information to the Board for consideration. Voting in favor were: President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Financial Secretary Mikulas and Secretai -Treasurer Anglin. Voting against were: Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Vavra, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Chairman Vanek, and Director Bayer. Motion tailed.

Director Broz moved to purchase magnetic signs for the vehicles assigned to the field representatives and the van garaged at the home office. Motion seconded by Director Hanus. Motion carried unanimously.

COMPUTER - At the last Supreme Lodge meeting, a computer had been approved for the President's Department and President Leshikar moved to ratify the purchase of a laptop computer for the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator. Motion seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas. Motion carried unanimousl y . The directors requested an inventory, date purchased, and the users of all the personal computers and laptops for the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

President Leshikar then presented a request for another new computer to be used in the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator's office. Vice President Mikeska requested authorization to purchase a new computer for the Vice President's Department and four laptops with interactive screens for the field representatives. There was a lengthy discussion concerning the purchase of the computers. It was decided by common consent to table action until after the recess so more information would be available.

GRIEVANCE COMMI1 1LE - President Leshikar brought up the need to restate the members that would serve on a Youth Department Grievance Committee. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurei Anglin to remove "the District Youth Counselor and Youth Leader" as part of the Grievance Committee and add "two of the Grievance Committee members are people that are active with the youth but do not hold a position". This change needs to be made in the Youth Rule Book. Motion carried unanimously.

LOAN MODIFICATION - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin recommended to extend the

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to leave the interest rate of Annuity I at 5.25 percent, Annuity II at 6.25 percent, and the Immediate Annuity at 6.25 percent. Motion seconded by Director Bayer. Motion carried unanimously.

INVESTMENTS - There was a discussion of the investments made beginning January 1, 1997, through March 31, 1997. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to ratify the investments. Motion carried unanimously.

INVESTMENT POLICY - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported the current investment policy reads, "The total invested in bonds and government guaranteed securities is not to exceed 75 percent of assets at time of purchase'. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to change the percentage from 75 percent to 80 percent. Motion carried unanimously.

MAIL POLL - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported the mail poll to authorize the organization process of a new lodge in Graham was approve unanimously. Director 13roz moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to ratify the mail poll. Motion carried unanimously.

Recess was taken from 3:20 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

COMPUTERS - The purchase for one personal computer for the Vice President's Department and one personal computer for the President's Department was brought back before the Board. Vice President Mikeska presented bids for personal computers.

The bids are comparable to the personal computers which have recently been purchased by SPJST. Director Klinkovsky moved to purchase two computers and two printers, if needed, not to exceed $7,000.00 for all Motion seconded by Director Vavra. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, SecretaryTreasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Vavra, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Harms, Director Vanek, Director Bayer.

Voting against was Director Krizan.

Director Vavra moved for the state field representatives to continue to use their current laptop computers. Motion seconded by Director Broz. Motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir to present a budget to the Supreme Lodge Members during the January 1998 Supreme Lodge meeting. The officers need to furnish Financial Secretary Mikulas with any purchases they are anticipating for 1998 by November 1, 1997. Motion carried unanimously.

INCOME AND EXPENSES - Financial Secretary Mikulas presented a comparison of the income and expense figures for 1997 to that of 1996. He also compared the actual expense and income figures to the amount that was budgeted for 1997.

ANNUAL STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the annual statement was mailed to the Texas Department of Insurance on February 27, 1997. He went over the annual statement with the Board in detail and asked for any questions.

LODGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM-- Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on the number of certificates that had been credited to each lodge. The local lodge incentive program has shifted from a premium refund program to one of incentives to lodges for new members.

ANNUITIES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that there are 1,523 Annuity I contracts for a total of $23,617,434.48. Annuity II has 997 contracts for a total of $19,537,794.53.

A.M. BEST - A report was given by Financial Secretary Mikulas on the results of a lengthy telephone call to A.M. Best. A. M. Best indicated SPJST would continue to have the A- (Excellent) rating.

Thanks to the Officers and Members of District Three Dear Officers and Members of District Three: My wife, Justine and I can never begin to express the deep gratitude we feel after the wonderful tribute paid to us at the April District Three meeting. What a surprise to receive proclamations declaring it our day in District Three. the day long celebration in our honor, including the generous gifts, especially the engraved clock and mounted crystal bowl, were more than any two people could expect. To top all that off was a touching program by the District youth dedicated to Justine and me.

Although my wife was unable to attend due to recent surgery, she and I

will never forget the love and respect of our membership. As fulfilling as the years spent in service to the SPJST have been, we will always be thankful to our friends of District Three for their gift of celebration and the distinction of being named Lifetime Honorary District Three Director and First Lady.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky reported on the tournaments he held and local lodge meetings he attended. He reported on the District II meeting.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan thanked everyone for granting funds to Lodge 6. He expressed his thanks to former Director Pokladnik for his efforts and support in District III especially the support for his work with Lodge 5, and for making a recent presentation in his behalf to the Southern District of American Sokol organization.

In regard to the million dollar producer pin being redesigned, Director Krizan requested that extra consideration and recognition be given to those producers who go to the two or three million dollar level or beyond.

Lodge 6 will be sponsoring a 100th Anniversary celebration with an emphasis on Czech heritage and culture and urged all members and lodges to participate by paying homage to their ancestors.

Director Krizan then asked Supreme Lodge to consider updating our SPJST history from our last compilation completed through 1980 by former Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris. Because this is our 100th Anniversary, he thought this would be a likely date to work to. Chairman Vanek responded this is assigned to Supreme Lodge Home Office. President Leshikar responded that he is on this and some lodges are not sending in their history updates.

He invited everyone to District III's Spring meeting; 100th Anniversary at Lodge 25; and 100th Anniversary celebration at Lodge 6. Director Krizan would also like to see a special invitation sent to the former directors and officers inviting them to attend the 100th Anniversary celebration in July at the Bell County EXPO Center and find some way to honor them for their past services.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz reported on insurance sales in District IV and invited everyone to the District IV meeting at Woodrow, Texas. Director Broz requested information at the next meeting concerning the possibility of doing home improvement loans where SPJST currently holds the first lien. He stated he enjoyed the meeting and thanked the officers for their cooperation.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus expressed his appreciation to Financial Secretary Mikulas for him and his wife's attendance at the District V Spring meeting. He also commented on different local lodge functions he had attended.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer expressed his appreciation to Vice President Mikeska and his wife and Chairman Vanek for attending the District VII meeting and to. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin for conducting the Local Lodge Secretary meeting at Lodge 107. He invited everyone to District VII YAD in Floresville and also to the San Antonio baseball night. He reported on local lodge functions he had attended.

Director Vavra read text on a letter from Andre Schwab expressing his appreciation with the help Director Vavra and the Home Office had provided Lodge 188 Centerville.

DISTRICT VI - Chairman Vanek reported on the lodge meetings and workshop he had attended. He described a chart in which he had compiled showing the percentage of members who have active certificates in each lodge of District VI. .He reported on the contacts that had been done with the lodges he had selected as dormant lodges.

The Supreme Lodge concluded that the next meeting begins at 1:00 p.m. on July 21, 1997, at which time the directors will begin the audit. The 100th Anniversary celebration is July 12 and 13.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Open House Marks 100 Year Anniversary SPJST Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville will be 100 years old in July. The lodge celebrated its 100th anniversary with an open, house at Fayetteville's original SPJST Hall on State Highway 159 on Sunday, April 20, 1997, from 2 to 5 p.m.

The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge was the first lodge chartered by the newly formed organization in 1897. The Supreme Lodge Headquarters was located in Fayetteville from 1897 until 1951 when it relocated to Temple. The Vestnik, the SPJST newspaper, was also printed in Fayetteville for many years.

One of the founding fathers of the SPJST, John R. Kubena, was a prominent Fayetteville resident. His living children are Edwin- Kubena and wife, Ivy, and daughter-in-law, Minnie Mae Kubena, of Fayetteville; Woodrow Kubena of Austin; Anita Rosenberg Kubena of LaGrange; and Lambert "Tom" Kubena of Ellinger. John was affiliated with a national organization

formed for Czech people, known as CSPS. CSPS was a mutual insurance company established by the members for their families. In 1896, as a result of their dissatisfaction with CSPS policies and benefits, 25 members decided to secede and form their own company.

On June 20, 1897, the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas was organized with 497 male members and financial resources of $497. I.J. Gallia was elected President and J.R. Kubena was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the SPJST (The initials SPJST are an abbreviation of the Czech name of the organization). Mr. Kubena was an official of the SPJST for 42 years until his death. Augustin Haidusek was also a prominent figure in organizing the SPJST and was one of the three individuals appointed to draft the original charter.

In celebration of this historic event, musical entertainment was provided by Gil Baca on keyboard, Lee Edward Baca on drums, Alvin Minarcik on accordion, Louis Polansky and Jim Supak on guitars. The Fayette Czech Singers sang many of the old favorite Czech songs.

Their performance had those in attendance singing along. The singing group included Erwin Cernoch, Martha

The lodge provided the food and drinks and a beautifully decorated cake with the inscription of "100th SPJST Anniversary."

Both Esther Lee Hoelscher of Houston and Margaret M. Wilson of Unionville, Connecticut, were to be honored at this celebration for attaining 50year membership. Neither was able to attend so their 50-year membership pins were mailed to them.

24, Cyclone Celebration to Feature Fun Run and Kolache and Bread Contest Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, To commemorate our 100th anniversary, SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone will host a grand Fourth of July Celebration and 100th Birthday Party on Friday, July 4, 1997. A full day of family-oriented activities is scheduled, including a 5K Centennial Fun Run, Kolache and Bread Contest, Bicycle and Mower Parade, bingo and other games.

Free live entertainment will include performances by "Elvis" at 6 p.m. and The Granger Polka Boys from 7 - 11 p.m.

29, Taylor Member Receives National Honors Lodge

The United States Achievement Academy recently announced that Sheri Machu was named a National Award Winner in four categories.

These are very prestigious honors. The academy recognizes less than ten percent of all Sheri Machu American high school students.

Sheri, who attends Thorndale High School, was nominated for the United States Business Education Award by her teacher Pam Dishberger; the United States National Leadership Award and the All-American Scholar Award by school counselor Mr. Thomas Kahlick; and the National Physical Education Award by her coach Ms. Burleson. Sheri will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, which is published nationally.

The Academy selects USSA win ners upon the exclusive recommenda tion of teachers, coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors and upon the Standards of Selection set forth by the Academy. The criteria for selec tion are a student's academic perfor mance, interest and aptitude, leader ship qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability and recommen dation from a teacher or director.

Sheri is a member of the Thorndale Chapter National Honor Society and a member and officer of the Future Business Leaders of America. She has been a class officer for the past four years. She has participated in various UIL competitions, placing first in District 1996 Prose Interpretation competition. Sheri has been a member of the varsity track team, varsity tennis team for three years, and varsity volleyball for two years. She was named District 21AA Volleyball Second Team All-District Outside Hitter. She has been an active member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club for the past 11 years.

24, Cyclone Reports on May Meeting

Dear Readers, The meeting was called to order by Vice President Richard Greger, in the absence of our president. He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing in memory of our deceased members.

We wish Gertrude Bravenec a speedy recovery after having surgery.

Secretary Rhonda Greger read the minutes and they were approved as read.

Reports were given by Treasurer Penny Coots, Hall Manager and Ticket Chairman Bobby Hoelscher, and Bar Chairperson Rosamond Baker.

Rosamond Baker told us this will be the last report for we have a new bar chairman, David Nauert.

Secretary of the Board LaVerne Cabla read their minutes of the board. There was some discussion of what the board proposed.

Youth Leader Rosamond Baker reported to us all what the youth club has done and their plans for the future. They are very active which we are glad our youth club is doing so well.

There is a new shed which was built and an extension of the barbecue pit. We want to thank all the people that had a hand in this. Also, we want to thank all the people that . worked at our Mother's Day Meal and those that donated cakes and potatoes. Without each one of you, we could not have done this project. So a great big thanks to all.

On our old business, we again discussed the Fourth of July Party celebrating our lodge being 100 years old. There will be lots of activity, food and dance. Every age group will have something to enjoy so make plans to come. There will be a lot of advertising to tell you when all this will take place and at what hour. The date is Friday, July 4. We discussed our fund raiser that will be held August 2, 1997. Call any member of our lodge to fill you in on that activity. Then, November 8 and 9 is our cookoff. So there will be things to do at Lodge 24, Cyclone for entertainment.

Congratulations to Justin Psencik for being elected as president, of FFA on the district level. He also was elected president of the local FFA at his school in Rogers.

New members which we welcomed to our lodge are Rodney Marek, Brett Marek, Melody Marek, Storey Marek, Joshua Kirby, Geri Soloman, Larry Lawrence, Andrew Macek, Leah Macek, Sarah Macek, Danny Ashcraft, and Jill Lyn Shortridge.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Just a friendly reminder to our lodge members that our annual picnic is coming up on Sunday, June 1. Be gathering up things you wish to donate for the games and auction. Anything will be appreciat ed: canned goods, white elephant items, plants, kolaches, cakes, pies, etc. The larger items will go to the auction and smaller items to the games. Lodge 47, Seaton r Celebrates Mother's Day at May Meeting Dear Brothers and Sisters, The May lodge meeting was held on Sunday, May 4, 1997, at 2 p.m. with President Edwin Pechal calling the meeting to order. Flag Bearers Crystal Bartek and Jessica Kirby brought in the flags and led us in the pledge to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence to honor the memory of Sister Evelyn Hejl Marek of Chilton, formerly of the Seaton Community. May she rest in eternal peace and deepest sympathy to the surviving family.

Visitors recognized were Ann Balusek, Rosa Lee Pechal, and Freddie Schroeder. Do make plans to come to a lodge meeting again. We enjoyed having you present: therefore, we want you back next time.

Joyce Skrabanek read the names of those on the sick list: Rudy Schiller, George Pavlica, Edward Mihatsch, and Patsy Pechal. Also, Justin Pole was in a hospital this weekend and, prayers for Kitty Sodek and Milady Jecmenek. Hope everyone is feeling better so they may return to their homes. It was so good to see Irma Klinkovsky at the meeting.

Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives with only Robert Heese absent out of all those named. Minutes were read and approved.

New members included Irene McClain and transfers from Lodge 24 of Alois W. Pechal, Dale Louis Pechal, Thomas Ray Pechal, and Peggy Sue Shaffel. A warm welcome to each of you. Alois Pechal was at the meeting.

Correspondence included a thank-you for the wreath of flowers for the funeral services of Sister Martha Klusacek from her family; a letter from the Supreme Lodge about the golf tournament in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary at the Bell County Expo Center with 30 teams to qualify for the tournament at Sammons Park on Saturday, July 12 (contact Daryl Entrop at the Home Office); and a letter from Johnnie Krizan requesting an ad for Lodge 6, Cottonwood's souvenir booklet for their 100th Anniversary to be held on August 17.

The TABC is having classes every two weeks for the people helping in the bar and this is the law to have a license that is valid for two years for everyone concerned. He also stated the barbecue cookoff at the Bell Expo will be on July 12. Contact Gene McBride for more information. Our local lodge cookoff is the following week on July 19. He congratulated Dolores Skrabanek for being a leader in insurance sales.

Vice President Edwin Vasicek asked for volunteers as judges at the cookoff in the categories of beans at 12 noon, chicken at 1 p.m., pork at 2 p.m. and beef at 3 p.m. If you would like to be one of the tasters, let them know and be there at least 15 minutes before the judging takes place. Friday night is karaoke under the trees and hamburgers and plenty of good drinks, too. Mark your calendars for July 18 and 19 for the cookoff weekend at Seaton Star Hall. There will be no dance at night.

Second Vice President Ruth Hanusch stated that family night will be Friday, May 16, but due to -a wedding the following day and decorations for that in the hall, we decided that the annex building can be used for progressive "42," after the suggestion by Judy Pechal. So if you are an avid "42" player, mark your calendar on Friday, May 16. Hamburgers, french fries and drinks will also be available in that building as usual for family night at 6:30 p.m. with play following.

She wished all the mothers a Happy Mother's Day. Treasurer Gladys Marek gave her reports as financial secretary and treasurer. She also brought the quilt the ladies had furnished. It is a beautiful piece of art that would, make anyone proud to have it on their bed. The tickets for this quilt; one-half beef, cut and wrapped; a 26-inch boy's or girl's bicycle; 13-inch color television; and $50 gift certificate are available from lodge members.

All chairpersons gave their reports and Woodrow Marek gave the quarterly audit report.

Donna Baca gave the youth leader's report. Present were 16 members and six adults. They held their elections for the coming year I did not get all of the names of the new officers so I will let them report in the youth section. She thanked those who came and supported the youth fund raiser with donations of food and auction items, and also the purchases of these. They still have some cookbooks for sale, so contact Donna or the youth club members. She also gave the various deadlines that are coming up.

Old business discussed included that a kitchen committee chairperson has not volunteered as of May 1. Wallace Jez stated that auction items will be appreciated by him or Frank Klinkovsky as they are co-chairing this project with their wives and Lee and Ruth Hanusch. We will have prizes donated by members and teddy bears bought for the games instead of prize money. Sweets booth chairperson Margaret Gibson said that someone will have to start the sales booth before she comes due to a conflict on the same date. I volunteered to help her plus any one she has to help of family or friends., Any items for this will be appreciated.

Anyone may come to help in the prea,dtion on Saturday as with the food and setting up tables, benches and chairs. We will also have work days on Thursday,

May 29 and Friday, May 30 to trim trees and some clean up of grass and leaves. A general workday in the evenings of May 29 and 30 after work 6 p.m. to ? will lighten the load on Saturday. The Saturday time is 8 a.m. until all is done.

If anyone asks you to work, please don't turn them down. Monday is the day to put up everything into storage until next year. Tom Gibson has already wanted a trailer to load the items on If you can come that day, that will be appreciated.

New business included the approval of replacing the roof on the hall after the storm did so much damage to it. We voted to proceed with this project immediately. We also discussed the need of more profitable means of financing operations of the hall. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Everything is costing more: utilities, reports and maintenance, etc. so the bank account .reflects less profit.

Birthdays for the month of May will be celebrated by only one member present, Mary 'Vasicek, and wedding anniversaries of Edwin and Judy Pechal and Tom and Margaret Gibson will also be in the month of May. Hope you did something special this year.

Door prize winners were Gladys Marek, Helen Janacek, Margaret Gibson, Mary Vasicek, Dorothy Pechal (told you I might win something!), Joyce Pechal, Pearlie Faichtinger, Rosa Lee Pechal, Donna Baca, Vallie Zavodny, and Dolores Skrabanek. Judy Pechal went and bought a bunch of petunias and she separated these into clay pots and each sister could take one home as a Mother's Day gift from the meeting.

I received a wonderful letter from Ruth Shenkir Keith from Arlington saying how much she enjoyed my reports since she lives in another part of Texas.

She said they all look forward to the Vestnik and the reports of Lodge 47.

The next meeting will be a night meeting because of the picnic on June 1 and reunion on the second Sunday. The meeting will be Monday, June 9 begin ning at 6:30 p.m. with a covered dish supper honoring the high school graduates and the fathers. So it will be "Grads and Dads Night" and the meeting will follow immediately after the cleanup. A summary of picnic profits will be available by then, too.

73, Seymour Participates in Agriculture Show

Lodge

On April 10, Seymour hosted the Annual Agriculture Show. SPJST Lodge 73 had a booth at the show. The members and sales representatives of Lodge 73 passed out packets on the different types of insurance the SPJST has to offer.

A very large crowd attended to view all of the different types of booths that were set up for the day.

A barbecue lunch was served to everyone who attended the show. Lodge 73 members working in the booth were Sales Representatives Chris Orsak, Raymond Pavliska, Jesse Hajek, and Jerry Tornenek, and Henrietta Pavliska.

Brother Latham read a letter from Lodge 6, Cottonwood concerning an ad in their centennial 'program. A motion was made by Gwen Bell, seconded by Risa Pajestka, that we participate.

Motion carried. Brother Latham then read a letter from Lodge 24, Cyclone about an ad concerning their centennial program. Brother Latham made a motion, seconded by Florine Rohde, that we participate and the motion carried.

Brother Latham also gave information about a centennial program in the Temple Telegram. Due to the excessive expense involved with the Telegram, and the fact that no lodge would directly benefit, a motion was made by G.L. Brisbin and seconded by Glen Latham not to participate. Motion carried.

Brother Latham gave all the committee reports and all were doing fine.

The following were accepted as new members in the lodge: Anthony Canava, Brandon Bell, Freddie Severson, and Laura Severson.

President Rohde recognized Monica Ann Ivicic as a centennial recruiter and presented her with a pin. Congratulations and keep up the fine work!

President Rohde asked District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky to come forward to made a 50-year member recognition. Brother Frank gave a short report on what life was like 50 years ago and some information on the cost of living at that time. Brother Eugene Pavlat was then presented his 50-year membership pin. Brother Pavlat thanked the SPJST and told how proud he was to be associated with the SPJST and he hoped he will make another 50 years!

Brother Pavlat resides with his lovely wife, Charlene, in Temple now but he still has his family home place in Holland. He has made some changes in it including a Texas A&M windmill! Our family lived neighbors to Eugene when I was growing up and I can still recall getting to ride on the top of the load of hay crossing the creek to the barn with him. I know his parents Joe and Agnes would have been very proud of him on this day as they gave much in their lives to seeing Lodge 80 prosper. Congratulations, Eugene, on being a 50-year member!

On Sunday, May 18, Lodge 80 will have a free dance (Yes, a free dance!) with music by Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six from 2 to 6 p.m. The doors will open at 12:30. The kitchen and bar will be open. We invite all to come out and have an enjoyable afternoon at Lodge 80.

President Rohde stated that all the ladies in attendance would receive a free six-pack of their choice in honor of Mother's Day which is this month.

Brother Glen then asked the membership that it has been nearly an hour and no one had mentioned that President Rohde had been elected the new mayor of Holland, Texas. Congratulations, Harold!

81, Needville Reports on April Meeting

Lodge

On Sunday, April 20, 1997, the monthly meeting of the Needville SPJST Lodge was held. Thirty-seven members and guests attended the function. A new face at our meeting was Helen Kolaja Stone of Bellaire, formerly of the Damon area.

Helen is a member of Lodge 81. Her parents are the late Tom Kolajas. It was good to see member Frances Brauer of Santa Fe at the meeting again. Nancy Schriewer, guest of Mary and Donnie Matcek, was also present. We hope all of you can return to our meetings each month.

At twelve noon, Darlene Blinka and her kitchen crew had the food all set out and ready to be devoured. President Macha led us in grace before the meal.

Roast beef and sausage along with a large variety of vegetables, salads, and desserts were served. The roast beef was baked

by Sister Benita Walzel which was delicious as usual. Thanks, Benita, for preparing the meat for us.

President Macha called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. Ida Sliva led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our Vice President Vincent Newman was the only officer that was not present at the meeting. Willie Mae Kuykendall, our secretary, read the minutes from the March meeting. An approval was given to them as read.

Treasurer Benita Walzel then read her report which was approved as presented.

Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel read the schedule of events at the hall for the preceding month. He then gave his report and it also was approved as read.

In the correspondence department, a thank-you note was read from the family of Leona Mahler. Also, President Macha read the invitation from Lodge 92 in Fort Worth pertaining to the Spring Meeting in District Three to be held on Sunday, April 27, 1997. All are invited to attend.

Names on the sick list for this month are Johnnie Blinka, Adeline Bacica, Clara Magac, Jerry Blinka, Rosie Schwettmann, Emil Pollock, Emil Bezecny, Mildred Vecera, Charlie Pesak, Lloyd Zwahr, and Gladys Maresh. Emil Bezecny is now a resident at Kateland Square Center in Richmond. Get-well wishes are sent to each of you and to other members who are not feeling the best.

Lodge 81 is happy to report that there were no deaths this past month.

A new member has been added to the membership list of Lodge 81. She is Miss Sally Wleczyk of Needville. We welcome you, Sally, and hope that you will be able to attend our lodge meetings.

It was decided to do away with the hard bingo cards. A committee consisting of Alvin Blinka, Dorothy Kuban, and Elsie Brdecka will divide them among our local churches and the rest home.

Mary Werner reported that she talked to Vlasta Nowotny's daughter Joyce Crum in Florida. Joyce reported that her mother is doing fine and she now resides in a rest home.

Congratulations to Willie Mae Kuykendall upon the recent birth of a new granddaughter. This is the first child for Willie Mae's son, Thomas, and his wife.

It is still very wet in this area. There were a few dry days the week of April 13 and some of the farmers managed to get in the field and plant some maize and cotton. It has become a very sad situation.

We just have to continue to have hope and faith in the Lord that the weather will get better.

Our next meeting is Sunday, May 18, 1997, at the lodge hall. Baked and fried chicken will be on the menu. Ladies, please bring a vegetable or salad and dessert. We hope to see every one of you.

She has built the tiny perfection of her baby's body. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature. What on God's good earth is more glorious than your Mother?

97, Placedo Polka Fest This Sunday at Inez Community Center Lodge

The Ninth Annual Polka Fest will be held this Sunday, May 18, 1997, at the Inez Community Center in Inez, Texas.

Sponsored by SPJST Lodge 97, Placedo, the festival will feature the Vrazel Polka Band of Buckholts, Texas, and the Vanek Brothers of Victoria, Texas.

Music will be played from 1 to 7 p.m.

Admission will be $6 per person for adults and $2 for those 12 years and under. Hamburgers, cokes, kolaches and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

The Inez Community Center will seat approximately 800 people and has a good oak dance floor. The hall is located on Highway 59 at Inez, midway between Victoria and Edna, Texas.

97, Placedo Honors High School Seniors Lodge

On Saturday, April 26, three graduating high school seniors from Lodge 97, Placedo were honored at Tejas Cafe.

Honored were Dana Miller, Brandi Dum, and Matt Bain, all from Industrial High School. Each graduate introduced their parents and family, and spoke of their future intentions.

President Yvonne Garrett presented the graduates with an SPJST 100th Anniversary tee-shirt with matching cap.

133, San Antonio Reports on April Meeting Lodge

Lodge 133 held its regular meeting on Sunday, April 20 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio.

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Jarolyn Popp. There were 16 members in attendance.

We offer our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Brother Ernest Popp who passed away in April. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Members who have been ill include Marie Netek, Bill Pavliska, Emil Rohan, and Alvin Schimcek. We wish them all a speedy recovery.

The SPJST 100th Anniversary Celebration will be held in Temple during the second weekend in July. We will not have a meeting in June due to Father's Day and have canceled our meeting in July due to the 100th Anniversary Celebration. Our next regular meeting will be on Sunday, May 18 and then we will not meet again until August.

Couples celebrating anniversaries in April are James and Henrietta Lowak (37 years) and Roy and Margaret Schauffele (12 years). Members celebrating birthdays in April were Emil Matula, Julia Sefcik, George Schultz, Joe Holub, Rudy Valchar, and John Albert Kuba.

Door prize winners were Bill Pavliska, Viola Kurtz, and Evelyn Matula. Splitthe-pot winners were James Dlugosh and Mary Popp.

National Museum in Prague follows ten months of work by the National Czech and Slovak Museum to secure the exhibition. The exhibition was co-produced by Old Salem, a restored Moravian town and living history museum in WinstonSalem, North Carolina, and the National Museum in Prague. A Thousand Years of Czech Culture will be on exhibit in only two United States locations before the artifacts return to Prague.

More than a thousand years of Czech Artifacts include ancient icon painthistory goes on display May 24, 1997, at the National Czech and Slovak Museum ings, religious objects, decorative glass, and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society of the Concho Valley will hold its second quarterly meeting on May 18, 1997, at 2:30 p.m. in the SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena Hall.

Louis Kokes will preside over the business meeting. Many important issues will be presented and voted upon, therefore he urges all members to be present.

A second Czech Fest will be held this fall. Committees appointed at the last meeting are to report on their plans for enlarging and improving the occasion.

Comments from the floor will be welcomed for entertainment of all ages.

This year Conch° Valley Czech Heritage Society will celebrate its tenth anniversary. The chapter was organized on May 16, 1987, in the Rowena SPJST Hall. The first officers elected were Stanley Broz, President; Robert Mikeska, Vice President; Elizabeth Walther, Secretary; Albert Vaja, Treasurer; and Pauline Shiller, Reporter.

Ten members enrolled at that time.

At present, there are 36 members.

The Organization is active in promoting and preserving Czech heritage and culture.

After the meeting, the Joe Havlak and Delmer Batla band ,will entertain with their beautiful waltz and polka music.

Everyone can sing along or dance to the lively music. President Kokes said, "Bring a guest to share in the fun and fellowship."

For refreshments, members are asked to bring snacks—sandwiches, chips, dips, and desserts.

New Tabor and Snook youth groups opened the event with skits.

While the adults had their meeting, the youth went to the fire station for fun and games. Afterwards, cold cuts, drinks and desserts were served.

The May 4,. 1997, meeting of Lodge 107 Youth Club was called to order at 2:12 p.m. by Jolene Spillers. Josh Bayer led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

We had eight members, four adults, and two guests. They -were Hope and Zackery. The minutes were read and approved.

This month's social will be our Mother's Day performance Each member will perform for the adult lodge.. Our youth leader announced SPJST Night at the Missions on May 10.

District Seven YAD is going to be hosted by our lodge at Saved Hearth Banquet Hall on June 7. Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m. From 2 to 2:15 p.m. are photos of the king and queen. King and queen speeches are from 2:15 to 3:15.

Next is a short break and then talent and judging of Crafts.

On July 24, the district outing will be to the zoo and the Witty Museum.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:40 a.m. After the meeting, we made Mother's Day hat pins and ate chips and drank soda.

SEM —JSEM We call words like these homonyms; they sound the same but have entirely different meanings. In English, some homonyms are: there, their, they're, bear, bare; and close, clothes.

SEM means "here", or "to here", with ACTION, Ex.: Veera prijeli sem.

Pojd' sem! Dojeli sem gfastne. All of these involved action in coming or getting here.

JSEM means simply I am, or used with certain verbs, denotes tense, or time something happened.

Ex., Jsem u star gi elovek.

In speaking the above two words of sem and jsem, there is practically no recognizable difference: however, in writing it makes all the difference in the world. One means one thing, and the other means something else.

SPRAVA—ZPRAVA Here are 2 tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have 2 entirely different meanings. It is therefore important that we know how to spell the one we wish to use.

SPRAVA— means administration, or SPRAVKA, which is a repair; or SPRAVITI, which means to fix or to repair.

Ex.: Statni sprava je umistena v Austine.

"Before the show, these artifacts had never been seen outside the Czech Republic," he added. The pieces went on display in Old Salem, North Carolina, in September, 1996, and remained on display until April, 1997.

"This is a world-class exhibition, one that we're very proud to host at a facility that represents, in the United States, the national identity of the Czech and Slovak people. It's especially fitting since 25 percent of the population of Cedar Rapids claims a Czech heritage," said Baldwin.

The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library was founded in 1974. Its modern facility on the banks of the Cedar River was dedicated on October 21, 1995, by Presidents Bill Clinton, Vaclav Havel (Czech Republic) and Michal Kovac (Slovakia). Outside of the Czech Republic or Slovakia, the museum houses the largest collection of kroje (National Costumes) in the world.

The museum is located in the center of Cedar Rapids' Czech Village, one of Iowa's most distinctive ethnic enclaves, where authentic Czech food is available and Czech culture remains vibrant and alive.
