Youth leaders meet in LaGrange

Workshop celebrates SPJST's Czech heritage by Joni Lange, State Youth. Director Youth leaders from across Texas met recently at Camp I.one Star in LaGrange to celebrate the SPJST's 100th Anniversar y . With an emphasis on Czech culture, the three-day workshop provided attendees with a winning com bination of hard work, song, dance, fel lowship, food, and fun. The "Physicians of Phun", Mike Spiller and Greg Catalano, kicked off weekend activities with fun and games to help youth leaders become better acquainted. Great job, guys! Your help, enthusiasm and expertise are one of the highlights of our weekend. After everyone had caught their breath, youth leaders were taught the I3eseda, a Czech folk dance, by District Youth Counselors (DYC) Bessie Petr (District Three) and Marcy Dorotik (District Six). We would like to thank Bessie, Marcy, and their districts for taking an interest in preserving the Beseda and the rich Czech heritage it represents. At the Youth Leaders' Workshop, routine activities are opportunities to learn. One example is when Sandra Jansa (District Four DYC) and Betty Schwartz

(District Four Assistant DYC) challenged our knowledge of the Czech language. Before we could sit down to eat, we were given a Czech word or phrase to match with its English translation. Thank you, ladies, for a job well done! After breakfast, Gregg and Mike encouraged youth leaders to share some of their hottest ideas. For every idea pre sented, Gregg and Mike presented a new idea. We would like to thank our youth leaders, Mike, and Gregg for their cre ative and helpful ideas. Your help and cooperation contributed to the new session's success. Our newest workshop presenter, Penny Reeves-Goff, incorporated group interaction and thought-provoking techniques to encourage youth leaders to maintain their goals and objectives and not become discouraged. Afternoon sessions included Teaching Games TA/here Do I Begin, presented by Mike Spiller, Speaking More Positively With Children, presented by Gregg Catalano, a craft exchange, coordinated by Susan Skrabanek (District One DYC) and Holly Suehs (District One Assistant DYC), and a Youth Rule Book review, conducted by Continued on page 14.)
