Something to Consider

We received a nice letter recently from a reader in District Three. In his letter, the gentleman also inquired about the SPJST's annuity programs. Upon responding to his request, Assistant to the Vice President Kathy Fritz provided me with an informative illustration related to the SPJST's Annuity II program.

To illustrate how your money can grow in an SPJST annuity account, the illustration reproduced at the bottom of this column tracks an initial payment of $10,000 at yearly intervals for a period of 20 years.

Based on the current annualized rate of 6.25 percent, a $10,000 initial payment would be valued at $33,618.51 in twenty years. For the benefit of parents and grandparents who are purchasing an annuity for an infant, the illustration also shows the projected value of a $10,000 initial payment at an annualized rate of 6.25 percent interest after 65 years — $514,494.66.

District Five Presents Spring Meeting Minutes The District Five Spring Meeting was March 2, 1997, at Lodge 196 in Cypress, Texas.

The meeting was called to order by President Evelyn Mikeska at 1:30 p.m., following a delicious lunch.

The colors were presented by the District Five Youth and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. The American National Anthem was led by Carolyn Filipp and accompanied by the District Five Youth. Brother Fred Buri sang the Czech National Anthem.

Brother Fred Buri, First Vice President/Fraternal Coordinator of District Five, thanked Lodge 196 for hosting the Spring Meeting. He thanked all who participated in planning the meeting.

Brother Bob Hutto, President of Lodge 196, welcomed everyone. He thanked those that worked in the kitchen and all other areas to get this District Five Meeting to be such a good success in this kind of weather.

Guests from the Supreme Lodge were Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary, his wife, Betty, Vestnik Editor Brian Vanicek, our own District Five Director Louis Hanus, and Larry Pflughaupt, Assistant District Five Director.

President Mikeska asked if everyone had the program. She stated that all of the deceased members are listed in the program. The names of the 50-year and 75-year members are also listed.

The memorial service was presented by the youth. It was very impressive.

Secretary Lillia Mae Peter called the roll of lodges. Nine lodges were present.

The 50-year and 75-year members and

paid-up members were recognized. The Fraternal ists of the Year for 1996 are: Lodge 81—Mary Werner (not present) Lodge 91—Alvin Albert Franta (present) Lodge 172—Louis J. Hrabina (present) Fraternalist of the Year Honorable Mention Lodge 88—Johnny Ray Broz Brother Jerry Mikulas, Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary, reported that 1996 was a good year. SPJST makes sound investments and will be here for another 100 years. In July, 1997, we will be celebrating 100 years. SPJST has a surplus of over a million dollars after all bills are paid for 1996. We are in good standing. Mortgages are good with the SPJST and have never been sold as other mortgages are. He issued checks for $6,934.20 to District Five and $500 for holding the meeting at their lodge.

In the incentive program for our 100 year anniversary, any member can be written even if they are a member now and all new members will be counted to write up the 1897 members for our 100 year anniversary.

Brother Louis Hanus, District Five Director, issued plaques.

A motion was made to accept the minutes as printed. The motion was seconded and passed. The minutes were approved as printed.

Lorenda Baldwin, District Five Treasurer, reported. The balance in the general fund, as of March 2, 1997, was $6,328.64. The youth balance, as of March 2, 1997, was $3,699.80.

Ann Buri, and Mr. Tumis. Sister Walla said the books were found to be in order.

Sister Mikeska read thank-you letters from H.E. Butt Foundation thanking the SPJST for their support.

It was reported that the Rest Homes in Needville and Taylor are doing fine and are 99 percent full.

Brother Hanus said it was a super honor to be here. He reported that District Five had contributed 51 percent.

He reported on the workshop. Seven lodges from District Five were represented. $170,000 was refunded to the lodges.

He reported on mortgage loans and annuities. Annuity I is paying 5.25 percent; Annuity II is paying 6.25 percent; and Universal Life is paying 7 percent. He thanked everyone for the very good District Five meeting today.

There is a new FAC Director that will be coming to all lodges ten days out of each month.

There was no old business.

New Business Brother Buri explained how the Kroger cards are used for a fund raiser.

Kroger will pay one percent out of all purchases that you make with the cards.

Just give the card to the checker each time you buy groceries. Motion was made to use this method as a fund raiser for District Five. The motion was seconded and it was voted on and passed to be used as a fund raiser for District Five.

Sister Marie Stayton thanked everyone for coming to the District Five meeting.

Krystle Bender was the first place winner in the Camp Tee-Shirt contest in her age group. Karen Bender was the first place winner in her age group and the overall grand prize winner out of 83 entries.

The pastry was auctioned off. Thanks to all who brought pastry and who bought pastry. There were many door prizes brought and many received a door prize. Thank you all for donating the door prizes.

President Mikeska thanked everyone for coming and also for helping Saturday at Lodge 196 to set up the hall for the District Five meeting.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville Reports on March Meeting Dear Members, Our lodge held its monthly meeting on Sunday, March 9, 1997, at the youth center at 2 p.m. President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order followed by the pledge to the flag and roll call of officers.

Secretary Margaret Smotek read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved. Correspondence followed.

FAC Lillie Balusek and Treasurer Helen Zabransky reported. Chairman Joe Balusek of the Audit Committee reported they had met and audited the lodge's and youth club's financial records and that everything was in order.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck told the members about the monthly bingo party held for the residents of Stevens Convalescent Center. Members assisting were Evelyn Sklar, Evelyn Holy, Jo An Matula, Lillie Balusek, and Elsie Mascheck. On the sick list were Willie Berger and Erma Lee Galetka. A sympathy card will be sent to Leona Macha on the passing of her husband.

Under old busin gs, a report was given on the Spring District Seven Meeting, hosted by our lodge on Sunday, March 2.

Everyone was thanked for helping and making it a success. Elected as district officers from our lodge were President— Joe Siptak, Secretary—Annie Vahalik, and FAC—Helen Zabransky.

It was announced that our lodge won the First Step Award Plaque and $200 at the Fourth Annual SPJST Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards Banquet on February 22 and hosted by Lodge 47, Seaton. Also enjoyed was the Local Lodge Officers Workshop at Lodge 24, Cyclone. Attending from our lodge were Joe and Susan Siptak, Margaret and Albert Smotek-, Mary and Frank Matula, Annie Vahalik, Elizabeth and Jonathan, and Patsy and Helen Zabransky.

The meeting adjourned, followed by a delicious lunch. The youth enjoyed an Easter egg hunt in the park.

Door prize winners were Monica Vanek and Jamie Vanek. A special Easter door prize went to Helen Zabransky.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, April 13 at the youth center at 2 p.m.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Meets Sunday, April 13 Dear Readers, Just a reminder that the lodge meeting will be held Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m.

As the State FAC sent newsletters to local FACs, it was pointed out to have something new for each month for the members to take part in. For this month, we will have a show-and-tell. We already have a volunteer to bring something interesting. Anyone having something outstanding or interesting, we would like for you all to bring it and tell something about it. The youth club will have a kite flying contest.

I want to thank all the volunteers that came out early in the morning to cook for the Easter party and also those that helped later and also the cleanup. We had a good crowd for the meeting, picture taking, Easter egg hunt and supper. We also honored three 50-year members. All three were present.

Anyone wishing to go to the 100th Anniversary celebration in . Ennis on May 3 needs to let me know so we can go as a group.

The supper will be prepared by Jerry and Dorothy Kucera. Everyone is asked to bring sweets and also door prizes.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Reports on March Meeting Brother Robert Dobecka called our meeting to order at 1 p.m. on March 23 by welcoming everyone to our meeting and Easter celebration with a meal for the afternoon. Jake Williams led us all in the pledge to the American flag with help from Christi Sparkman.

Sister Georgie Soukup gave her report of 38 members and guests present. There were several guests with us for the afternoon activities, which we all welcomed.

We hope they will join us again.

Sister Barbara Hykel read minutes from our two previous meetings, which were approved as read. Sister Peggy Dobecka gave her reports, along with Brother George Straten welcoming several new members. Sister Lydia Dobecka gave her report, along with congratulating Brother Johnnie Krizan and Brother Jerry Kucera on their incentive awards. Sister Dobecka also mentioned going to Lodge 25, Ennis' 100th Anniversary on May 3 by carpooling. Anyone wishing to go needs to let her know.

We were honored once again by two speakers, Brother Jerry Kucera, Sales Representatives for District Three, and Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director. Brother Krizan mentioned that it had been an exciting two-and-one-half months as new director and thanked Brother Sid Pokladnik for a job very well done for all his years of service as District Three Director. Brother Krizan also congratulated Brother George Straten of our lodge with being in the top five of Fraternalists of the Year for District Three.

Brother Robert Dobecka, President of Lodge 6, Cottonwood, presented area organizations with checks representing charitable donations from the lodge.

Those presented with checks were West Fire Department, West Chamber of Commerce, West Ambulance, Czech Heritage Society, and West Sokol.

Brother Krizan and Brother Dobecka presented 50-year pins to Sister Lydia Dobecka, Brother Anton Gerik, and Sister Evelyn Pappas. Congratulations!

A report from the Sunshine Committee was given by Hattie Kaska.

She reported get-well cards were sent to Brother Willie Kohutek, former District Two Director, and to Sister Stella Perez (I'm glad to be up and about now).

Sympathy cards were sent to Sister Laverne Mikeska and Sister Valerie Mae Helona.

Birthdays for the month were recognized for those in attendance, namely Brother Alvin Pavlas, Brother Cyril!

Svrcek, Brother Jerry Kucera, and Brother Larry Marak. A "Happy Birthday" to you and to all with a birthday this month.

Door prizes were drawn at the end of the meeting. The regular door prize was won by Brother George Straten. Two special door prizes of 100th Anniversary Cookbooks, donated by Brother Johnnie Krizan, were won by Sister Georgie Skerik and Brother Don Watts from Rosebud, Texas. Congratulations! , After Brother Robert Dobecka thanked all the cooks that showed up early that morning to prepare for the day, the meeting was adjourned until 2 p.m. on April 13.

The young and the old enjoyed an Easter egg hunt after our meeting. Adult prize eggs were won by Brother Ray Perez, Sister Lydia Dobecka, and Brother Dan Ferguson. Congratulations!

Items donated by various members to SPJST Lodge 6 Youth Club for a raffle drawing were given away. An 11-inch electric skillet, donated by the Kucera Family, was won by Ray Romero. A large Easter bunny, donated by the youth club, was won by Marietta Lander. A wall hanger, donated by the Schiemenz Family, was won by Harvey Prynka. 13, Dime Box Reports on Activities

Dear Members and Friends, Lodge 13 held their regular meeting on March 16. As most of you know the Community Picnic is on Sunday, May 25, 1997. Last year, we worked with the Homecoming Committee, the Volunteer Firemen, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church to see about upgrading the electricity for the booths and building a permanent stage. As of today, the new meter-loop and pole is finished.

Materials are being ordered for the stage and for repairs being made to existing buildings.

On Saturday, April 12, we are having a hall beautification day. Everyone is invited to attend. We will start at 8 a.m. and work as long as possible. Please bring rakes, lawn mowers, weed eaters, paint brushes, tape measures, and skill saws.

For those of you who cannot help on the outside, we need people to help cook hamburgers. Upon the adjournment of the business meeting, the fraternal hour buffet luncheon will begin.

51, Ellinger Honors 50-Year Members

The Ellinger SPJST Lodge 51 members and their families enjoyed a catered fried chicken with all the trimmings meal.

The dinner was held at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce hall on February 16. Refreshments were served at 12 noon and the meal was served at 1 p.m. Mrs. Alton Koehl led the table prayer.

Approximately 100 people were present.

Among those present were Director and Mrs. Andrew Vavra of Bryan.

After the meal was served, Mr. Vavra and Lodge President Ludwig Kocian presented 50-year pins to John C. Divin, Walter Divin, Eddie Orsak, Mrs. L.G. Kubena, and Mrs. Adolphine Krenek.

Also receiving 50-year pins but not present were Mrs. Virginia Slott and Clarence Marusik. Leon Sefcik provided music on his accordion.

Mr. Vavra and Mr. George Berkfeld, sales representative for the lodge, drew numbers for door prizes. Winners were Casey Urban, Dennis Niesner, Mrs. Eddie Orsak, George Berkfeld, Jr., Corey Marusik, Ann Minar, Mary Mikulenka, and Burdine Divin.

Picture taking and fellowship were then enjoyed. Everyone had a good time.

81, Needville Reports on March Meeting

Lodge

Guess what! A record attendance was set Sunday at our regular monthly meeting. There was a grand total of 83 members and guests present despite the fact it turned out to be a messy, rainy day. It seems as though every time the lodge has some special occasion to come up, it rains that particular Sunday. It usually doesn't stop the people from coming out and we are grateful for that. Speaking of raining, that is the key word again, some people were able to work in their gardens, but

the poor farmers have not been able to do anything in the fields. There were heavy amounts of rainfall throughout the area that weekend. Since then, much more rain has fallen. If we get sunshine for two days, a record has been set.

Sunday, March 16, 1997, was a special day at Lodge 81 in Needville. The Age 96 and 50-year members were honored.

Karolina Zeman, our age 96 honoree, was not able to attend. Her daughter, Viola Kutej, represented her mother. The 50year members present were Gladys Janczak, Rosie Pieper, Charlie Pesak, Rosie Stavinoha, Marvin Hurta, Pauline Havelka, Martin Pesak, and Rosa Linda Hartfield. Those who were not able to attend were Franklin Fojtik, Hermina Fojtik, Ellen Gaidosik, Jerry Kaderka, Marilyn Reagan, and Jo Ann Shelton.

We are sorry that these folks were not able to be with us. One 50-year member, Frank Zapalac, is deceased. For those people who were not present, the pins will either by mailed or someone will deliver them personally.

President Macha presented those present with their beautiful pins along with congratulations and a handshake. The ladies received corsages and the men received boutonnieres. Congratulations to all 16 recipients. Lodge 81 is truly proud of each one of you. In honor of these special people, a chocolate sheet cake iced in white with all 16 honorees' names inscribed along with a congratulatory message was served. The colors on the cake were in the springtime theme.

The cake was baked by Sandra Wiles and donated by Adolph and Delores Macha and Sandra and Miranda Wiles. Thanks for baking the delicious cake, Sandra.

Also thanks to Benita Walzel for getting the corsages and boutonnieres and to Miranda Wiles for all of her help.

At noon, everyone enjoyed a delicious meal which consisted of baked ham and sausage along with many, many mouthwatering dishes of vegetables, salads, and desserts. Thanks to Alvin and Darlene Blinka for donating the ham and sausage and to Darlene for preparing the meats. It was very good. A big thanks to everyone who brought all of the other food.

President Macha and the Horky children led us in grace before the noon meal.

President Macha called the business meeting to order at 1:05 p.m. Sister Benita Walzel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our Vice President Vincent Newman was the only officer absent.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read the minutes of the February meeting.

After a minor correction, the minutes were approved as read. Treasurer Benita Walzel presented the monthly financial report which was accepted as read.

Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel began with the schedule of events for the lodge hall for the next month. Gilbert then read his financial report and it was accepted as read.

Lodge 81 is sorry to report the deaths of two members. They are Edward J. Kovar of Damon and Leona Matcek Mohler of Rosenberg. A moment of silence was observed in memory of these two departed loved ones. Sympathy is extended to both families. May the Lord grant them eternal rest.

The following members are on the sick list: Adeline Bacica, Jerry Blinka, Rosie Schwettmann, Clara Mazac, Helen Teykl, Emil Pollock, Mildred Vecera, Louise Newman, and Gladys Maresh.

Gladys is from Needville and is the sisterin-law of member Charlie Pesak. May God bless each of you with a speedy recovery. Get well wishes are also sent to other members who are ill.

In the correspondence department, President Macha read a letter from Martha Hubenak Durham, District Three Treasurer, informing us of the Spring Meeting in District Three on Sunday, April 27, 1997, at SPJST Lodge 92 in Fort Worth. Everyone is cordially invited.

President Macha then gave a report on the workshop that was held in Cyclone and the awards banquet that was held in Seaton on Saturday, February 22, 1997.

President Macha and his wife, Delores, attended both functions. At the workshop, we met with Brian Vanicek. Brian gave us some good advice about writing articles and the art of picture taking. The Machas would like to thank both lodges for their warm hospitality. It was an enjoyable day. It was nice to renew our friendship with many of the folks that we had. met at the SPJST conventions. By the way, Lodge 81 brought home $200 and a beautiful plaque. Congratulations to our lodge!

Some people were still somewhat confused on filling out the fraternal worksheet. President Macha explained it again. If there is something you still don't understand, feel free to ask him.

Lodge 81 is happy to add a new member to its roster. This young lady is Mikayla Kramer. Mikayla is the granddaughter of Kenneth and Brenda Sweeny of Guy. Welcome aboard.

I hope all of you had a very happy Easter. Belated Easter greetings go to my friend Mary Anders at Needville.

Everyone is so happy that our hardworking Birthday Club President Kathy Trefell is back with us; she had quite a bout of it including pneumonia. Billy Jack Holeman is ill, and we all wish him a quick recovery; we miss you.

Congratulations go to Karen Bender on being the Grand Champion Designer of the Camp Tee-Shirt Contest. It always feels good to write about our fine youth.

President Clara Broz is busy with plans for the lodge activities coming up.

8/VkSTNIK—Wednesday, April 9, 1997 meeting, so I will have more to say in my next letter.

Congratulations to Marian Kadlecek who was our lodge winner in insurance sales for February.

Our workers-committee party was nice. The weather was not so good and kept some from coming. The food (fried chicken dinner) was excellent. The good music by Gus Lindemann was enjoyed and especially by Charles and Lea Hodek; Charles made everyone around him happy! We were especially happy to see Ruth and Bob Martinak, whom we have been missing. Bob is doing well and was jolly as always! It was also good to see Ann and Gus Urbanovsky!

Back in 1973, I signed a tiny baby girl, Lisa Marie Kelly, daughter of Betty and Steven Kelly. How time flies! Lisa graduated from the University of North Texas last year and is an excellent Interior Designer in Oklahoma City. I also had signed up her brother Steven Ray who has a fine position here in Houston. How proud grandparents Estelle and Steve Kelly must be!

There are still some mighty good dances in April: Manny Green on the 12th; Seven Dutchmen of New Braunfels on the 19th; and Knights of Dixie on the 26th. For a great time, come to a Chandelier Ballroom Dance!

88, Houston Presents March 10 Meeting Minutes

Lodge

President Clara Broz opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. and Calvin Orsag, Tom Haney and Cleburn Lincke presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The names of three deceased members were read. The minutes were read and approved and correspondence was read.

Three new applicants were voted into membership.

Officers' Reports President Broz thanked all for the cards, concerns and prayers for Johnny during his recuperation after his accident.

First Vice President Marie Stayton asked the officers to carry flags in April.

Marie reported the workshop and awards banquet sponsored by the Home Office was extremely informative and very well attended by Lodge 88. Second Vice President Tillie Helmcamp commented on the workshop and awards banquet as being great fun.

Secretary-Treasurer Melanie Spies read the Consolidated Income Statement for February.

FAC Larry Pflughaupt reported the CCCC Social Dinner on March 15 and Spring Fest on March 23 at St. Christopher's. Larry also reported on the Centennial Celebration in Belton in July and information on hotels in the area is available.

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales reported 26 youth attended the Houston Rodeo and compliments to the LITs for a great job in helping. Congratulations to Karen Bender, our State Queen, for winning the tee-shirt design contest. Barbara thanked all who sent cards and prayers to Nat in his recent illness.

Committee Reports Willie Wehring of the Board of Trustees reported the board approved the Youth Easter Party, removal of the phone

at the pool, and remodeling will begin soon on restrooms in the ballroom.

Dorothy Pflughaupt of the Blueroom reported reservations are being taken for the Blueroom party on April 6, 1997.

Chicken fried steak will be served. Tom Marsh of the Men's Club reported a very good turn out for the clean up. Thanks.to all.

Gene Barcak of the Choral Club reported future scheduled appearances will be at the Czech Spring Fest, at St. Christopher's on March 23, Frydek Grotto Celebration on April 27, and Rosenberg Czech Fest in May. Benevolence Reporter Mary Kosut reported that during February, 538 hours were spent doing work for the lodge without compensation; 76 hours were spent doing charity work when the need arose; and 521 hours were spent doing charity work on a regular basis. Mary then announced that after 20 years as Benevolence Reporter, she must resign her position. She thanked her husband, Johnny, for his patience throughout these years. Also, Mary thanked Louis Hanus for helping her set up her records many years ago.

District Five Director Louis Hanus complimented Mary Kosut for the excellent job performed over the years.

President Broz added her gratitude to Mary Kosut on a job well done. We are now looking for a replacement. If interested, contact the office.

District Five First Vice President Fred Burl reported on the spring meeting held at Lodge 196. The election of officers results were the same as last year. He also announced District Five has just received Kroger Share Cards. We will receive one percent of total sales applied to our account which will be used to promote SPJST District Five.

DYC Marie Stayton reported the district meeting held at Lodge 196 had a fair attendance. Jerry Mikulas represented the Home Office. She announced Robert Castillo is the new youth leader at Lodge 196 and Lufkin and Needville are interested in reactivating their youth clubs.

Get-well wishes go out to Kathy Trefell, Jack Holeman, Bill Souchek and Johnny Broz.

State Field Representative Helen Hegwood reported the goal for the centennial year is set at 1897 new members.

We need your help in attaining the goal.

February Top Producers are Marian Kadlecek and Evelyn Mikeska. Helen also reported we will sell cookbooks at Lodge 88. If you are interested, see Marie Stayton.

There were 97 members present.

92, Fort Worth Reports on Activities Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, In my last letter, I said I would let you know about the Don Peachy band from Wisconsin that played here on March 16.

We really had a large crowd of good dancers from our area and several from

out of town. We thank everyone that came to keep our good Czech heritage. It was nice to have some accordion players present as they played during intermission. That is always enjoyed by all of us.

After the band finished playing about 7 p.m., our group of Czech singers along with the accordion performed many good old Czech songs. We appreciate Brother Laddie Gajdica playing the songs.

Laddie is from Dallas but comes here often. His wife is a great singer of Czech songs and helps our group sing.

I know I make mistakes so please excuse because I do not do them intentionally. I left out Brother Louis Kubala as one of the brothers-in-law of Brother Clem Oujesky who passed away February 20, 1997.

On the first Sunday at Lodge 92, country/western dances are held from 3 to 6 p.m. If possible, Czech dances are held on the third Sunday.

On Sunday, April 27 is the District Three Meeting. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a business meeting, and starting at 3 p.m. the Harry Czarnek Texas Dutchmen from Houston will start playing. The SPJST members will be admitted free and non-members will be asked to pay $6. So some of you non-members think about joining the SPJST where you will get lots of benefits just by purchasing an insurance policy. Our sales representatives are wanting to write you up right away. The SPJST has very good insurance policies and the rates are much lower than those of a stock company.

SPJST offers many things so let the sales representatives explain them to you.

Our next lodge meeting will be April 13, 1997, so plan to attend and take part in your lodge. The game nights are doing great and we have several new players learning to play taroks and other games.

These are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month starting at 7 p.m.

Be sure to read your Vestnik for news from other lodges across the state of Texas, and look in the calendar section of the Vestnik for activities of the SPJST lodges.

97, Placedo Polka Fest Set for May 18 at Inez Community Center Lodge

The Ninth Annual Polka Fest will be held May 18, 1997, at the Inez Community Center in Inez, Texas.

Sponsored by SPJST Lodge 97, Piacedo, the festival will feature the Vrazel Polka Band of Buckholts, Texas, and the Vanek Brothers of Victoria, Texas.

Music will be played from 1 to 7 p.m.

Admission will be $6 per person for adults and $2 for those 12 years and under. Hamburgers, cokes, kolaches and refreshments will be available throughout

the day.

The Inez Community Center will seat approximately 800 people and has a good oak dance floor. The hall is located on Highway 59 at Inez, midway between Victoria and Edna, Texas.

On Wednesday, March 26, 1997, Lodge 172 held their regular meeting after a delicious covered dish dinner.

President Robert Mayfield called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m after the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed.

The roll was called and correspondence was read.

The President read a letter from the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce telling us about the clean-up drive this year.

Plans for our annual social on April 20 were made and finalized. Everyone was told that the envelopes have been addressed and the invitations are ready to go out.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Bleiblerville-Nelsonville SPJST Lodge 201 had their regular monthly meeting on Sunday, March 9, 1997.

The meeting was called to order by President Elaine Duron at 3 p.m. Present were President Elaine Duron, Secretary Lillie Mae Shupak, Hall Treasurer Jenelle Zettel and 15 members.

The secretary read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved.

No special business was on the agenda. Get-well wishes went to those we knew of, who were Florence Jurchak, Kermit Kolives, Judge Gladys Oakley, Jessie Macat,- Kenneth Wehring, Elsie Eben, Clarence Zettel, and Alida Maresh.

Please take notice the next meeting will be the April and May meetings on Sunday, April 27, 1997, at 3 p.m. This is a social meeting.

Sewing Circle Reports on March Meeting

Ennis

The Ennis Circle met on March 13, 1997. Twenty-nine members were present and 12 visitors. Our visitors were Mary ravey, Amy Prachyl, Lucy and Bill Tupy and son David Wesley, Ann Tupy, Jerry Kohn, J.E. Zmolek, Jerry Koubek, Wesley Tupy, Julius Podhrasky, and Charles Kosarek. We are always happy to have guests.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Antone Cikanek, brother-in-law of sister Mary Kubacak and cousin-in-law of several sisters of the Circle. We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife, Adelle, and family. Secretary Linda Trojacek read the minutes.

Treasurer Lillie Kosarek gave the finan-

cial report. Both reports were approved as read.

The sunshine report was presented by Eleanor Pelzel. Get-well cards were sent to sister Mary Kopecek, Libbie Wisniewski and Georgia Morales. We hope that each one gets well soon.

Birthday greetings were sent to sisters Rosie Zazvorka, Mary Polasek and Lillie Hejny.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to March birthday celebrants.

We welcomed Ann Tupy (Milton) as our new member. She is the daughter-inlaw of sister Vallie and Wesley Tupy, also niece-in-law of all the Tupy sisters.

It was good to have sister Liddie Pavelka back with us. We have missed her for quite some time.

A quilt was quilted for the Polka Festival. The drawing will be held for the quilt on June 1, the last day of the Polka Festival. The Annual National Polka Festival will be held in Ennis, Texas, on May 30 through June 1, 1997.

Sister Rosie Bednar thanked all the quilters for quilting her quilt. Sister Eleanor Pelzel has recovered very nicely after her knee surgery. She thanked the Circle for the get-well card and money gift. Sister Mary Kopecek is home, after spending some time in the hospital.

Sister Alice Roberts had cataract surgery.

I suppose I am getting along all right.

Everyone told me "there is nothing to it."

I do not agree. I am finally doing better.

I will have another knee replacement on May 16. "Old age" is catching up with me.

Sister Georgia Tupy furnished the door prize. Sister Rosie Bednar was the lucky winner.

Money donations were received from Mary Pavey, Jerry Koubek, and Bill Tupy. Sister Anne Zabojnik gave a donation for winning the quilt in December.

Sister Rosie Bednar gave a donation for having her quilt quilted. Sister Rose Ann Parma donated a quilt top. Evelyn Slovak donated iced tea cups. Sister Anne Zvolanek brought lovely camellias from her yard for the officers' table.

Sister Libbie Wisniewski brought mints and Alice Roberts brought Easter decorations. All donations are appreciated and we thank each donor.

Congratulations! Sister Linda and Victor Trojacek are proud grandparents of Dustin Lee, born on February 16, 1997. Proud parents are Sheila and David Motley.

I received the SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbook and am enjoying looking through it. There are so many good recipes. As soon as I get a new oven, I will start baking again.

I enjoy reading Carl Zich's letter, especially the jokes. Recently, my pastor told a good one from the pulpit. I will leave the jokes for Carl and I will stick to my dog stories.

A neighbor of sisters Georgia Tupy and Libbie Wisniewski who lives across the field from them is very sad. So am I. Her little cocker, Blackie, was killed by coyotes. Blackie was such a sweet dog.

Before this tragedy happened, he got hit by a car. I saw him all bandaged up, even had a crutch. He was doing so good. Dorothy got another dog recently.

I know she misses Blackie but she will learn to love the new doggie. She is thinking about a name for him.

Our next meeting will be April 10.

In Memory of Mary Norman

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 92 in Fort Worth, Texas, wish to express sincere sympathy on behalf of our entire membership to the family of CLEM OUJESKY, a diesel mechanic who died Thursday, February 20, 1997, at a Fort Worth hospital at the age of 84.

The funeral was held at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday, February 22 at Mount Olivet Funeral Home with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Clem Oujesky was born in Bryan, Texas, on March 14, 1912. He was a member of the Friendship Club, KJT, and SPJST Lodge 92.

Survivors are his wife, Louise Oujesky of Blue Mound; son, Clem Oujesky, Jr. of Euless; daughters, Margaret Laymance of Decatur and Judy Acherman of Bedford; brother, Frank Oujesky of San Antonio; sisters, Mary Mouton of Galveston, Helen Hodges of Pearland and Josie Kubala of West; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Mary Norman, 98, of Mart, died Monday, February 17, 1997, in a Waco hospital.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m.

Thursday, February 20, 1997, at Wilkerson Hatch Chapel with Rev. Bill Smith and Rev. Tim Watson officiating.

Burial was at Rosemound Cemetery.

Mrs. Norman was born September 11, 1898, in St. Johns, Texas. She attended school at Elm Ridge near Mart. She and Carl Norman were married December 18, 1920, in Waco. He preceded her in .death on December 26, 1983. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mart and SPJST Lodge 35 in Elk. She was also an avid baseball fan.

Survivors include two sisters, Rose M. Ganser and Nelda Anderson, both of Mart; a brother, Edwin Holub of Waco; and several nieces, nephews, and greatand great-great nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Holub, Ron Holub, Kris Holub, Scott Holub, Lonnie Anderson, and Leonard Gulig.

Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of. Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother, LOUIS E. KOLINEK of Bloomington, Indiana, who died Thursday, February 27, 1997, at the age of 80 years.

Services were held at the Day Mortuary at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 3, 1997. Father Michael O'Mara officiated. Burial was at Valhalla Memory Garden.

Brother Kolinek was retired from Pure Milk Company in Waco. He and his wife moved to Indiana about ten years ago after his retirement. They enjoyed dancing and had been members of SPJST Lodge 66 since August, 1971.

Brother Louis is survived by his wife, Iris Kolinek of Bloomington; two sons, Bill Lozowski and Louis Kolinek, Jr. of Bloomington; one brother, J.C. Kolinek of Waco; four sisters, Marjorie Seawright, Ella Chiles and Ione Lewallen of Waco, and Lois Watkins of Belton; and three granddaughters, Dana and Jennifer Lozowski of Atlanta, Georgia, and Emmily Kolinek of Bloomington.

Expression of Sympathy We, the resolution committee of Lodge 47, Seaton, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge sister, STAZIE MARTINEK, who passed away Wednesday, February 26, 1997, in a Temple hospital.

Services for Mrs. Martinek, 76, of Oscar were at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1 in Seaton Brethren Church with the Rev. Al Newby officiating.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Mrs. Martinek was born in Bell County to John Svoboda and Mary (Coufal) Svoboda. She married Albert Martinek on October 27, 1946, in Temple. She was a 50-year member of SPJST, belonging to Lodge 47. She was a member of Seaton Brethren Church.

Survivors are her husband, Albert Martinek of Oscar; and a brother, Johnnie Svoboda of Temple.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m.

February 28 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.

Lekce Dinka Lesson No. 13 Accent (stress) and Intonation In this lesson, we will discuss some rules and guides to speaking correct Czech, and using stress and intonation.

1. In Czech, the accent is invariably on the first syllable:— PRA-ce, SKAkat, SKO-la.

2. In the case of 3 or more syllables, there is a secondary accent on the 3rd syllable: PRA-co-VA-ti, VZDE-la-VAti, ZA-palo-VA-ti.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word following, and are always accented: Do Prahy (doprahy), po valce (povalce).

4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant, v, z, s, k— it must be joined in a single sound with the word following k yam kvam— (not ke yam): V Novem Yorku (not ve Novem Yorku).

5. Before other groups of consonants these prepositions are said in full and accented: VE stiedu, KE mne, SE mnou, ZE gkoly.

6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with the same sound: VE Vidni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE zeme. The reason for this is because double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech: (Anna, cennjr). A double vv or double kk are not pronounceable.

However, in a word like nejjemnejk, the two j's are separated because nej is a superlative prefix. More on superlatives later.

7. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to STRESS long vowels outside the first syllable.

The length or shortness of a vowel has no bearing on the stress.

8. Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech— its "musicalness"), that is, the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above 3, languages. The voice does not rise to as high a pitch, nor does it fall low as readily as in the above languages. In these respects, the Czech language, may be said to be rather "flat" and

9. The outstanding feature of Czech speech is the contrast between long and short vowels, alternating in succession, giving it a rather staccato character.

10. Finally, this rule should probably be observed: if you're not sure which syllable is to be accented, don't accent any; this will be better than stressing the wrong one. Don't worry too much about stresses and intonation at this point, but make it a part of each lesson as we move along.

CHS State Meeting April 19 in West The Czech Heritage Society will hold the Spring State Meeting on April 19, 1997, in West, Texas. The McLennan-Hill Chapter will host the meeting at Lone Star Hall.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. Entertainment by the West Czech Folk Dancers begins at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at 11 a.m. The business meeting starts at 1 p.m.

Slavic Heritage Festival slated for Sunday The 35th Annual Sts. Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival, Houston's oldest ethnic festival, is Sunday, April 13, 1997, at the University of St. Thomas Jerabeck Center.

The festival will feature heritage folk dancers, musicians and singers representing the Croatian, Czech, Polish, Slovenian and Ukrainian Greater Houston Ethnic Communities.

Ethnic food and cultural exhibits and displays will also be part of the event.

The traditional Sts. Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Mass is at 10 a.m. with Celebrant Most Rev. Bishop John Yanta. The Slavic Heritage Program is from noon to 6 p.m. starting with the presentation of the five Slavic Princesses, followed by an afternoon of spectacular dance, music, singing and excitement. Admission is $3 for adults and children under 12 are free.

The Jerabeck Center is located near Montrose at Yokum and West Alabama. Park in the St. Thomas University Park or on the streets around the university.

Czech Cook demonstration April 27 in Austin Texas Folklife Resources presents Maticka Kultura: The Foodways of Czech Texans, a series of traditional Czech foodways demonstrations at the Central Market Cooking School. During a two and a half-hour demonstration set for April 27, four Czech-Texan cooks will prepare traditional dishes that are still made in kitchens all over the state. They will also talk about their culinary and cultural heritage and answer questions from workshop attendees. Participants will be able to sample all of the foods prepared and take recipes home with them.

Attendees can watch the deft hands of sisters Rose Ann Hauger and Ann Frances Adams forming the most famous of Czech specialities, kolaches. Eileen Rosipal will prepare and fry delicate ruzicky (rosettes), made for weddings and holidays. Lastly, Vlasta Vitek will make homemade chicken soup with the only accompaniment that's (Continued on next page.)

A Sharing of Czech Culture University Place, the senior residence center in Houston, has requested a year of Czech cultural programs of the Czech Cultural Community Center. The first in this series took place on Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at 7:30 p.m. when a packed house heard the well-known SPJST Lodge 88 Choral Group, directed by lovely vocalist Helen Hegwood, accompanied by lively pianist Donna Merkle. Their repertoire included twelve numbers from the toe tapping Ja Rada Tancuju to melancholy Pisnicka Ceska concluding with God Bless America. This talented group included singers Louis Hanus, Tim and Rosalee Hanus Kostom, Naomi Kostom Spencer, CCCC Board Member James Ermis, Brothers Mel Post and Charles Pustejovsky, A.J. Fabrygel, Jerry Ermis, Bennie Kocich, Fred Buri, Gene Barcak, Lillian Vaclavik Young, and Alice and D.J. Motal.

On Thursday, March 6, 1997, at 7:30 p.m., another full house greeted Daniel Hrna, president of the Harris County Czech Heritage Society, who reviewed the book The Czech Pioneers of the Southwest. Daniel discussed highlights from the fascinating detailed stories of early Czech immigrants and their descendants as told to the late author and prominent Czech physician, Dr. Henry R. Maresh, in 1934. The audience included Mrs. Thelma Burnett Maresh and daughter, Karele Maresh Watts of Corpus Christi, Texas. The events were scheduled by University Place Program Directors of Norma Lowder and Marianne Ivens.

CCCC of Houston celebrates first anniversary The Czech Cultural Center of Houston celebrated its first year anniversary on March 13, 1997, at the Italian Cultural Community Center, 1101 Milford in Houston, Texas. Members enjoyed an evening of social interaction, a typical (?) Czech rizek of chicken fried steak, pecene brambor (baked potato), zelenina (salad), zelene fazole (green beans), piti—caj/kafe/vino (drinks of tea, coffee, wine), and dessert—tvarovy dort (dessert of cheese cake). Events Chairman Larry Pflughaupt rose to the occasion even though it was only four days following major surgery. Many in the crowd were SPJST members from three lodges. Those present were entranced by the charming string music, slavic compositions, as performed by eleven- to five-year-olds from the Southwest Suzuki School of Music under the direction of Joyce Durfee-Gertsman, accompanied by pianist Peter Vysburg.

The Czech Cultural Community Center was incorporated on March 8, 1996, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax deductible educational/cultural organization. It presently has a membership of 390 and is beginning a capital development campaign for the building of a much needed permanent facility. Its mission is to unify the community, individuals and organizations to provide a central focus and information center for all things Czech and Slovak.

The SPJST was founded as a fraternal benefit society in 1897.

Throughout its existence, the Society has worked to ensure the financial security of its members and its fraternal commitment to the communities where SPJST members live and work.
