Sister Mary Boudny Achieves Grand Age of 96

More than 1,000 contribute to '96 scholarship drive A total of 1,030 individual, lodges, members and friends gave a total of $14,743.38 to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. This amount does not include donations made to the SPJST Scholarship Memorial Fund, although both funds go into the same scholarship account. As of March 14, the scholarship fund escrow account contained a total of $88,556.77. This account also reflects the two perpetual scholarship donations received form Cindy Kovar ($50,000) and Mr. and Mrs. Myles Marek ($10,000), for a total of $60,000. The $60,000 will not be given in scholarships but will earn interest for scholarships. The balance of the account for scholarships to be given this year from donations will be approximately $20,000. To this amount will be added the $15,000 annual allocation from the Supreme Lodge, resulting in an estimated $35,000 to be awarded in scholarships in 1997. An additional $10,000 will be given to active youth through SPJST Leadership Grants and District Merit Scholarships and Royalty Educational Grants. These totals are estimated and may increase or decrease upon final accounting. Thank you to all contributors for your support of higher education for our members. The final listing of contributors appears on page three. SPJST-

Lodge 29, Taylor member devotes life to building family The SPJST congratulates Sister Mary H. Monroe Boudny, a member of Lodge 29, Taylor, who celebrated her 96th birthday on December 17, 1996. As such, Sister Boudny is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required.

Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer and SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbook project coordinator Lanita Anglin, seated at left, presents S4,000 check to Ronald McDonald House of Temple Executive Director Susan Bolton. The check represents profits generated from the sale of the anniversary cookbook. Also on hand for the presentation were, from left, back: Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska, Ronald McDonald House Director Carol Reeb, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir.

SPJST cookbook proceeds support Ronald McDonald House of Temple On March 7, SPJST officials presented a check for $4,000 to the Ronald McDonald House of Temple. The check represented profits from Home Office sales of the first shipment of 3,000 copies of the SPJST's 100th Anniversary Cookbook. "We're very happy to be able to provide this assistance," says Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, who coordinated the project. "This gift was possible thanks to the overwhelming response we have had from our members for the cookbook." The mission of the Ronald McDonald House of Temple is to provide a home away from home for families with seriously ill children receiving medical treatment at local hospitals. Temple's Ronald McDonald House, which observes its 11th anniversary in 1997, is one of more

than 175 Ronald Houses worldwide. "Families must be referred by a social worker, doctor, or nurse before their first visit to the Ronald McDonald House," explains Sister Anglin. "A donation of $10 per night per family is requested, but the fee is waived if the family cannot afford to pay. "The House is primarily supported by community donations," she says, adding that the SPJST will be making additional contributions to the House based on future cookbook sales. "More than 1,500 copies of the second shipment of SPJST cookbooks, due to arrive in April, have already been sold," she says. If you would like to order copies of the book, please refer to the form that appears on page 14 of this week's Vestnik.

ister Mary H. Monroe Boudny was born December 17, 1900 in Taylor, Texas to James and Frances Monroe. Mary's mother was born in Czechoslovakia. Mary had Mary Boudny one sister, Stella Malish, who is deceased. Mary's father passed away when Mary was three years old. Mary recalls the days of her youth when she and her mother and sister would travel by buggy to Taylor for supplies and to visit with friends. As an added treat, they enjoyed going to the movie theater in Taylor. Sundays were also special. It was a time to enjoy big dinners and visiting with family and friends. And, on occasion, large picnics would take place in the pasture where neighbors and family would gather for the day. There was always plenty of good food and great conversation. To this day, the tradition continues as every weekend the extended Boudny family returns home to visit. That extended family includes ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and six great-greatgrandchildren. The Fourth of July is an especially enjoyable time as the family hosts a large Independence Day celebration for family and friends. Mary married A.L. Boudny on May 1, 1920, in Taylor, Texas. A.L. was born in Moravia and came to the United States in 1904 with his parents, brothers, and sister. Mary and A.L. farmed 100 acres between Taylor and Coupland. Mary was born on the farm and contineus to live there today. A diligent worker, Mary had an active hand in the operation of the farm. She milked the cows, tended to various livestock and always had a garden. Mary and her husband had nine chil(Continued on page 3.)
