FIC Course Being Offered If you've been to a local lodge meeting within the last couple of months, you've probably received a report from your lodge secretary or treasurer, informing you of the premium refund that your lodge earned for 1996. As previously stated in the Vestnik, local lodges received $1 for every paid certificate and $8.50 for every premium-paying certificate. In some cases, this added up to a considerable amount that the lodge could apply toward its various expenses and fraternal efforts.

What about your local lodge? Were you satisfied with what you received?

Regardless of how you answer, the fact is, your return for 1997 can be better. The surest way to increase your lodge's 1998 premium refund is to enroll new members in 1997. Existing members are also encouraged to visit with their local lodge sales representative and evaluate their insurance needs. For the process to be most effective, it pays for the sales representative to have a thorough knowledge of the products being offered.

To help meet this end, the Insurance Department is encouraging sales representatives to enroll in the FIC (Fraternal Insurance Counsellor) classes that are scheduled to begin in April. The $35 course fee will be refunded upon completion of the three-part examination.

Since the FIC designation was first awarded in 1937, the privilege to put these letters behind one's name has been a hallmark of professionalism for sales representatives and home office fraternalists.

Indeed, the FIC designation has become the acknowledged standard of fraternal field education, demonstrating a commitment to ethics and providing career development and professional recognition.

neat volume with hundreds of calendar listings and related information that local lodge planners can tie-in with their monthly meetings, fund raisers and other special events.

April 1 is the deadline to enroll in the FIC (Fraternal Insurance Counselor) course sponsored by the SPJST. The cost is $35 and will be refunded upon completion of the FIC course to all sales representatives who participate. This is the last call for this session of FIC training.

As of this date, 42 sales representatives have enrolled in the course.

The FIC session will last approximately six months with review classes scheduled every two weeks in this time frame.

Each class will last two hours during which time state field representatives will review previous materials and make new assignments.

Behind the Scenes of the Lodge Incentive Banquet Congratulations again all incentive winners. The banquet attendance was at a record high with 485 plates served If you are a lodge volunteer you will identify with the following steps that we went through to set up the Local Lodge Incentive Banquet. If you are not, maybe you would like to get involved with the planning process of putting on a lodge event. It starts with ...

The Preparation Putting together an event takes a lot of effort. For instance, we began preparation for the Lodge Banquet in April of 1996.

This included research on entertainment, lodge arrangements, a theme for the banquet, and the meal. Communication to lodges had to be planned and consistently implemented for a year.

The Decorating This is one of the most compressed

activities prior to the event. Decorating usually has to be carried out the week prior or day prior to the event. The decorating can make or break an event. Decorating sets the mood of the event. If your guests are uncomfortable, the event won't be enjoyed. Decorating includes using the five senses of taste, touch, sight, smell, and sound. Decorating doesn't have to be costly. We have often used items that are inexpensive or cost nothing at all.

The Paperwork and Follow Up The paperwork involved in any event is also essential to what runs smoothly and what goes wrong with an event. We had "to do lists" coming out of our ears, and still we forgot a thing or two. So, "to do," "check off' and "assignment" lists are very important to seeing that the project is completed.

Planning and asking for volunteers is key to the success of an event. Assigning the right people to the right job makes things go smoothly. Remember, if you ask a basket maker to bake a cake, you'll probably get a reedy-cake. Ask a local decorator if they will volunteer their time or materials for free publicity or recognition before the public. Ask a member who is especially good at cakes or cookies to help you out with desserts. Ask a secretary or clerical person to organize paperwork and keep track of everyone.

Ask a thrift-shopper to help you locate items for decorating at local flea markets and garage sales. Don't forget to contact newspaper, radio or television. Many times the media is willing to put you in touch with a celebrity or locally wellknown speaker.

You had fun working with people and working out the challenges that always crop up. You know that if you can do this, then you can do more. What do you want to do next?

The Kudos Always thank the people who made the event successful.

Planning lodge or district events can be excellent experience that can help you in many ways. You can get this type of experience through your local lodge. If you've never tried it, ask to be involved on the next project. Even if it involves a position on the clean-up crew, just being around the event will help broaden your horizons.

District Five Youth Counselor Expresses Thoughts on District Meeting Dear Members, Well, our District Five Spring Meeting has come and gone. We met at Lodge 196, Houston-West and Mother Nature sent a beautiful but windy day for our meeting.

I would like to thank our hosting Lodge 196 for such a great meal. Thanks to everyone who helped make everything run smoothly. The kitchen crew-well, just everyone - did a great job. My thanks to each and every one involved.

President Bob Hutto and other lodge officers, your lodge is really coming to be known as a lodge of love and true fraternal spirit. Keep up the good work.

While we may not always agree on things, we must always keep in mind that we are SPJST. We should all go forth and maintain the spirit of SPJST. This is what our society was founded on. With this faith, we must continue to work shoulder to shoulder and heart to heart to go forth.

The tenets of SPJST still hold true today.

Let's set aside what may have happened last month, last year, even years ago. Let us go on a new track, a new purpose, resolution or whatever you may wish to call it. We must get on with the task at hand of making a better and stronger SPJST, starting with our own mother lodges within our respective district ,, and other lodges elsewhere, wherever we can lend a helping hand. This we must do.

For those of you who could not make the meeting, please say to yourself, "I will do better in my district to help each and everyone." Take a look at our youth.

They do not sidestep or go around adver sity. They meet it head on and they clear the air. Then, they proceed on.

We can learn a lesson by observing how our young people deal with problems. There is an old sayin g,, -You never get too old to learn, and you learn something new every day."

District Seven Presents Fall Meeting Minutes The District Seven Fall Meeting and Family Day was November 3, 1996.

The meeting was called to order by District Seven President Frances McDonald at 11 a.m. The meeting was hosted by Lodge 161, Jourdanton at the VFW Hall in Jourdanton.

The Pledge of Allegiance and prayer was given by Whitney Bohnenberger of Lodge 185. Colors were presented by Stacey Branham of Lodge 185.

Brother Milton Koch, President of Lodge 161, welcomed all members and guests.

Brother Sid Kacir, Legal Advisor, was introduced. All officers were present, except District Seven Treasurer Ernest Jasek. A moment of silence was observed in memory of deceased members since the last meeting.

Fraternalist Brother Henry Belicek of Lodge 202 was introduced. Brother Belicek is a long-time member of the SPJST. A motion was made and approved that minutes of the spring meeting were

accepted as published in the Vestnik.

Seven lodges were represented at this meeting. Brother Kacir spoke briefly and brought greetings from the Supreme Lodge.

Brother Robert Bayer, District Seven Director, spoke about a new policy— Newborn. Brothers Jerry Elzer of Lodge 79 and Monta Foster of Lodge 31 are top salesmen. Lodge 31 will not be able to host the district meeting.

Brother Eugene Hrncir, Director of Rest Homes, stated that decision of jobs and salaries will be discussed at a later date. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor is full.

The next meeting will be hosted by Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. The date will be announced later.

Brother Glenn Pruski, FAC of District Seven, announced that all contests will begin after lunch.

The meeting adjourned at 11:20 a.m.

Players Score Big Day

The 1997 State Tarok Tournament was off to a good start around 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 8 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. SPJST players from Alvin to Fort Worth vied for first through fourth places. Dan Gaida of Lodge 20, Granger led for most of the day with a total of 819 points to win first place. David Kucera of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi came in as second place winner with 788 points.

Kenneth Read of Lodge 92, Fort Worth won third place with 771 points and Lydia Jansen of Lodge 29, Taylor took fourth place with 730 points. Other top players were Jim Coufal (Lodge 47), fifth place, 720 points; Carolyn Coufal (Lodge 47), sixth place, 717 points; Gene Kucera (Lodge 79), seventh place, 698 points; and Marvin Grohmann (Lodge 88) and Henry Kubala (Lodge 92) tied for eighth place with 689 points each.

With a touch of a finger, Franklin Schlesinger of Lodge 29, Taylor provided up-to-date and accurate scores with his computer and a spreadsheet application.

The SPJST players battled it out to place for prizes in six rounds of tarok throughout the day. Round One proved successful for Leon Stiborek of Lodge 183, Arlington with a huge score of 248 points. Dan Gaida, however, had the highest round score of the day in Round Two with 273 points. Jerry Brezina of Lodge 92, Fort Worth, took Round Three with 185 points before lunch. Following a great meal, provided by Lodge 47, Seaton, the players resumed with Round Four. Aleen Gaida of Lodge 18, Elgin walked away with Round Four winning 224 points. In the fifth round, Ruth Wuensche of Lodge 48, Beyersville won highest score with 202 points. And, in Round Six, David Kucera took the prize and came in with the highest score of 207 points and won overall second place. All high score winners were awarded a new deck of tarok cards for their talent and

effort.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth has a wealth of tarok players in a wide range of ages.

Lodge 92 took home the trophy for having the most players present.

Congratulations to them.

The day ran very smoothly, all the tarok players are very well-behaved and know just how a tournament should run.

The competition was very friendly, and although the concentration could be seen on the faces of the players, every once in a while a smile or loud shout would break across the room. All players came away winners, because it takes as much grace not to win as it does to win. We did have a player, though, "Santo Domingo", who swore off the game forever, although this writer did not quite believe him.

A special thanks to Ruth Hanusch and Dorothy Pechal of Lodge 47, Seaton who helped run the tournament. And, thanks to Franklin Schlesinger for providing his computer and printer. Also, thanks to Howard Leshikar, Supreme Lodge President, who managed to make the tournament although he was not feeling well. And, last but not least, thanks to past State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky for organizing such a smoothly-run tournament.

Congratulations to the 1997 winners, and to all players, may your tarok cards never "get fluffy" and may your chips never lose their shine.

Dear Readers, The meeting was called to order by President Brian Vanicek. He led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for our deceased members.

We are glad that Jerry Zavodny is recuperating nicely after major surgery.

We are also glad that Regina Zabcik and Johnnie Svoboda are better. We mentioned Emma Schneider was in the hospital, and since the meeting, she passed away. Our sympathy goes out to the family. Also, our sympathy goes out to Miro Spanhel's family. Mr. Spanhel passed away Friday, March 7, 1997.

In the absence of the secretary, President Brian Vanicek read the minutes and they were approved as read. An acknowledgment was given by Bernice Sebek thanking the lodge for the corsage given to her for being the Fraternalist of the Year. She wore it proudly at the workshop and incentive banquet. On Saturday, March 8, at the State "42" Domino Tournament, Johnny Chervenka, Jr. and Billy Smetanka won a plaque for being the champs. They won seven games. 84, Dallas Reports on February Meeting Lodge

Dear Members, It was such a beautiful Sunday to welcome our new members. President Yeager called the meeting to order at 3:15 p.m. She asked for a motion to have our January meeting minutes read in our March meeting to allow more time for the initiation ceremony.

She introduced John Krizan, our District Three Director, who visited our meeting for the first time in his new role.

Brother Krizan said he was happy to be with us and looked forward to working for and with Lodge 84 when needed. He thanked Brother Sid for the many years he served the society as District Three Director.

President Yeager then introduced Brother Jerry Kucera, Districts Three and Four Field Representative, who said he was delighted to see everyone and spoke highly of our sales representatives, Sister Betty Olson, Brother Ben Jarma, Brother Emil Petr and Brother Doug Yeager, and also how proud all should be of District Three tops in sales. The members are happy he came to the initiation

ceremony and brought his wife, his son and daughter-in-law and the beautiful twin grandchildren, who were so happy in the blue double stroller being pushed across the dance floor by no other than Brother Jerry. Everyone waved bye-bye as they left for home having enjoyed the spaghetti dinner with us. Speaking of dinner, it was so very, very good and was enjoyed by all. All that beautiful pastry that the ladies brought was also enjoyed and appreciated.

Dinner was not served until the sales representatives called all new members to the floor to he seen and have Brother Sid Podladnik initiate them into our midst.

Thank you, Brother Sid. As usual, no one can make members feel more at home and welcome as you.

President Yeager announced all 50y ear members will he honored on April 19 (our 87th" anniversary). A dance with music by the Granger Polka Boys will he enjoyed. A dinner will he served before and during the evening (starting at 6 p.m.) with 50- y ear members as guests for dinner. The menu will he printed in the Vestnik so watch for it.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr announced the y outh and teens were meeting in the conference room and teen room. She said all enjoyed going to Fair Park and the Imax Theater last week. The youth delivered valentine favors that they made as well as carnations to each resident at St. Joseph's Home in Oak Cliff. A first for many was riding the DART (rapid transit) from Oak Cliff to Park Lane (underground from downtown to Mockingbird Lane) which was also a thrill to the first-timers.

Dance schedules are out and can be picked up at the entry desk. On March 15, the Henry Rejcek Polka Band plays for dancing, and on April 5, Jodie Mikula of Ennis is here. Don't forget our anniversary celebration with-the Granger Polka Boys playing for dancing. You haven't heard them? Well, this is your big chance!

Sunshine ladies Sister Vickie Kohn and Sister Lillie Jarma sent get-well cards to Sisters Dorothy Zardle, Carol Rejcek, Geraldine Jezek, Evelyn Trojacek, Jeanne Pool and Brothers Hank Sadecky, Steve Cerny and Raymond Rejcek.

154, Fort Worth Reports on March Meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Our meeting on Sunday, March 9 was called to order by our president Brother Jerry Milan. He welcomed us and led us to the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes were read by our Secretary Sister Mary Renfro and the treasurer's report was by Sister Anna Johnson and both were approved.

Brother Jerry gave a report on the 100th Anniversary Cookbook. The first 3,000 have already been sold and more are being printed.

Brother Jerry and Sisters Anna Johnson and Rosie Steinman attended the workshop and gave us good reports.

They said the banquet was great and a lot of good food and fellowship.

Brother Jerry extended a big thankyou to all who put the final touches on our new kitchen.

We were reminded to attend the District Three meeting that will be hosted

by Lodge 92 in Fort Worth on Sunday, April 27. A free dance for members will follow. Non-members is $6.

Here we are getting to Easter time on Sunday, March 30. It will be as in the past for Lodge 154 and Sokol Fort Worth.

A covered dish lunch at 12:30 p.m. The club will furnish the iced tea. Each family is asked for a dozen colored eggs for the hunt. Prizes will be given.

We extend our congratulations to Cleatus and Virginia Steele who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Our birthday celebrants are Sister Maria Prill who is visiting her daughter Eva and husband Virgil Dockery in Surprise, Arizona. I talked to her on her birthday and she has some breathing problems, but she sounded good and will be back here in May. Also to Sisters Mila Milan, Carrie Milan and Sally Milan, best wishes for many more.

Our meeting adjourned to Sister Anna Johnson's famous strawberry cake and fellowship.

Our next meeting is Sunday, April 13 at 3 p.m.

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Barcak of Houston announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Shirley Renee to Stephen Vincent Schoen, son of Mr. Sidney C. Schoen and Mrs. Carol Burnett of Cypress, Texas. The ceremony will take place on April 19, 1997, at The Foundy United Methodist Church in Houston. The Barcaks are members of Lodge 88, Houston.

We began the regular lodge meeting with the call to order by the president.

Tedda Kuropata led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

There were 21 officers, members and visitors present. We paused for a little while to watch the young ones gather the Easter goodies and have their pictures taken. It was great enjoyment to see the children with their baskets hunting the eggs. We hope to have pictures later.

Then, we proceeded with the meeting, the reading of the minutes and the financial report. Both were given and approved.

There was discussion of plans for special guests to teach us the game of taroks on March 19 at Jo Ann's Place in Chilton between 7 and 9 p.m.

Also, the upcoming pizza party in April for the youth was discussed.

Our next lodge meeting will be April 27 with a covered dish meal. We would like to invite all our lodge members to attend and enjoy the fellowship and meal with us.

We adjourned and enjoyed the meal of sandwich fixings and visiting with welcoming the visitors to come again.

Wednesday, March 19, 1997—VESTNIK/11 Becky Elzner Jackson, who was on a three-week tour of Alaska with her husband.

At 6:10 a.m., I received a phone call from Milly and Jerry Elzner in the Czech Republic, who were also gone for three weeks. Jerry had promised to call during our meeting, but said they would not have access to a phone at that time. So he called me at home and asked that I tell everyone hello. He said the weather was perfect-60 to 65 degrees—and Milly said it was so beautiful she wanted to stay longer.

Ella Simcik reported her sister, Albertina Oakes, was in Reno attending a bowling tournament so Ella took her place .as hostess. We hope Albertina did as well bowling as Ella did playing "42" in Hallettsville at a tournament held there last month.

We voted a $25 donation for cookies to be purchased for the West Haven Rest Home for Easter. Betty Jurica is in charge of purchasing and delivering them.

A thinking-of-you card was signed by all for Pauline Novosad, who seldom missed a meeting. Pauline's aunt, Albina Bartos, passed away February 14, and while attending a funeral at West, Pauline's sister, Annie Mach of Abbott, suffered a stroke. Annie died a few days later. We extend our deepest sympathy to the family. Albina, a longtime resident of

Sunnybrook Nursing Home here in Corpus Christi, loved reading about our activities in the Vestnik. She would have been 96 in April. We always sent her a birthday card signed by our members, which she appreciated. A donation in memory of Albina Bartos and Annie Mach was received from Anna Marie Moss.

A birthday card was signed for Velma Malchar who is still unable to attend our meetings. We miss her.

Also missed were Rose Huff and Georgia Ann Kubala. At the time of our meeting, we were unaware Georgia was back in the hospital. During her hospitalization in February, her daughter, Pat Nielson, gave birth to a baby girl, Lindsey. We hope Georgia Ann gets to go home soon and enjoy her new granddaughter.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Helen Kasparek, Marion Peterek and Taylor Padgett, whose first birthday was on the day of our meeting. We have enjoyed seeing her growth each month—she's such a sweet little girl.

As always, a delicious luncheon was enjoyed as were the door prizes, games and good company.

Our next meeting will be held April 3 at Sokol Corpus Christi.

Circle of Czech Women Reports on March Meeting

Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. Alice Roberts led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Antone Cakanek, brother-in-law of Mary Kubacak and cousins of Vicki Kohn, Adell Vlk, Alice Roberts, Anne Zvolanek, Mary Sebestik, and Evelyn Trojacek.

Bertha welcomed 28 members and eight men guests. We had sunshine and a good attendance.

Georgia Brozek of the Sunshine Committee sent get-well cards to Evelyn Trojacek, Mildred and Calvin Cervenka.

The members signed a card for-Millie Noska.

Vicki Kohn sent a 50th anniversary card and a money gift to Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger.

In the hospital is Rosalie Horelica. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Every Monday morning, Olie Eixmann, Ruby Lee Oberhoff, LaVerne Tielke, Ervin Kroll, Willie Mae Tielke, Viola Fuchs, Alice Bergen, Clara Narramore, Bernie Tielke, Mildred Novak, Charles Eaton, Jayme Nulisch, and John McCormick came to have sing-a-long.

Every Tuesday morning, Frank Ramos came to have Bible study. In the afternoon, Annie Stavinoha, Ida Gasch, and Tmi Kramer came to help with bingo.

Every Wednesday morning, different churches came to have services for the residents.

Every Thursday morning, Father Ramsey, Milton Legendre, Rosie Kovar and Annie Stavinoha with St. Michael's Catholic Church came to have mass. In the afternoon, the Presbyterian, Catholic, Damon Baptist ladies, Methodist, and Immanuel ladies took turns coming to have crafts.

Every Friday afternoon, Mildred Novak came to help roll hair.

On Tuesday evening, February 11, the Polka Lovers Club danced for the residents.

Friday afternoon, February 14, the residents enjoyed a valentine party. Elizabeth Zela was crowned queen and Eldie Istre was crowned king. Cake, ice cream, punch and coffee were served to everyone.

A Flower and Gift Shop provided the corsage and boutonniere.

Announcements Czech Culture Society meeting is March 24, 1997, at Sokol.

Old Business We will cater the rental at Sokol on June 7, 1997. We will discuss this next month.

Bertha has asked us to read the new by-laws and see if we need to revise them. Bertha Malik is working on a new book. We will discuss this at our next meeting.

We voted to send a thank-you card and a $25 gift and a picture of the Krouzek to the ladies from Brno who made the kroj for our doll.

The soccer team from Brno will be here from March 18 to 21, 1997. There will be about 16 boys, ages 10 to 12 years, staying at the Sokol. They will sleep on sleeping bags and they will have to be fed. Bertha has asked if we had a sleeping bag, sheets, towels, and blankets to bring them to Sokol. She also asked for donations of money, cold drinks, food and help to prepare the meals for the boys.

Hostesses for March were Adel Vlk, Georgia Brozek and Libbie Elsik.

Hostesses for April are Dorothy Sherrill, Sydney Bridewell, and Lillian Greaser.

News of Members Anne Zvolanek said she talked to Rose Kopecek and she is feeling better.

She would like for members to call her.

She gets lonesome. Mary Sebestik is doing better. Lydia Alholm said she talked to Ella Mae Faraizl and she is feeling better.

Esther Cunningham brought the door prize and Bertha won and she will bring the prize for April.

Faye Wright said she is going to send birthday cards to the members celebrating birthdays. Faye read the birthdays and we sang "Happy Birthday" to the celebrants.

Esther Cunningham read a poem "Miracles of Easter" and the blessing and we adjourned for a nice covered luncheon.

On Monday afternoon, February 17, Ed Pisklak provided music on the accordion.

Tuesday morning, February 18, Garland Hurtys and Mary Goffinett brought pets for therapy. George Lolley, Larry Ognoski and Fritz Koehne provided music and singing on Tuesday evening, February 15.

On Wednesday morning, February 26, Dr. Grady came to check the residents' eyes.

On Friday afternoon, February 28, the monthly birthday party was held. Louis Vacek and Fritz Koehne provided music on the piano and accordion. A Flower and Gift Shop provided the corsages and boutonnieres. The First Baptist Church ladies provided the cakes and helped serve.

Happy Birthdays for the month of February are Mary Anders, Mary Alexander, Tonnie Dannhaus, Pauline Fishbeck, Bernice Greuve, Anita Schmidt, Eileen Spezia, Yvonne Stafford, and Raymond Veselka.

Moravia School Reunion The Moravia School Reunion will be held on Sunday, May 4, 1997, at the Moravia Dining Hall. All former students and teachers are invited and your family is welcome.

Registration begins at 10 a.m.

Everyone is asked to bring enough food for his family, but the food is set out for everyone to help himself to any dish there. Tea, coffee, plates, etc. will be furnished. The meeting follows the lunch.

A silent auction will be held. If anyone wants to donate some article, it will be appreciated.

If anyone would like for their class to have a reunion at this time, then take it upon yourself to contact your classmates and ask them to meet you at the Moravia School Reunion.

County CHS Reports on March. Meeting

Wharton

The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society met. Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the First Christian Church. Eighty-five members and guests attended President Marie Matcek opened the meeting and welcomed the members and guests. The national anthem Kde Domov Muj was sung and accompanied on the piano by Ethel Kuzell Meek. Refiting the Pledge of Allegiance followed.

The prayer was given by Merril Adamcik and there was a moment of silence in respect of deceased members the past year.

Memoriam

Two special guests were introduced by Ethel Kuzell Meek, reporter. The first guest, Ivana Zlatanovic, an exchange student from Belgrade, Serbia (part of the former Yugoslavia) presented an interesting talk on her experiences in El Campo, customs in her country, and her family.

During the question and answer period, she gave the members a knowledge of the present situation in her country.

Basically, she stated that the people of the countries of Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, and Macedonia only want peace.

Her host family in El Campo are Dr. and Mrs. Carlos Zorilla and daughter, Natalie.

The second guest introduced was Jozef Bednar, 25, of Dolne Dubove, Slovakia, who is the guest of Kenneth and Ethel Meek for two weeks. Mr. Bednar spoke of his experiences in the United States and why he was able to come to Texas, particularly, El Campo.

He is a graduate student and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Comenius University in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. He is presently a visiting scholar at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is a student of Dr. A. Richard Elam who is a partner in two Wharton County newspapers and a professor of journalism at North Carolina University. Together with Chris Barbee, editor of the El Campo Leader News, is the reason Mr. Bednar came to El Campo to gain some experience of a small town newspaper. He served as an intern on a number of publications, including several weekly, international newspapers, a national radio station in Bratislava and also as an intern in Ipswich, England. He is on a spring break from the North Carolina University. Mr. Bednar was especially impressed to meet so many Czech people in the area who speak Czech and want to keep the Czech culture and traditions alive.

Gladys Rod, secretary, read the minutes of the previous meeting. Rita Vanek, treasurer, gave the treasurer's report.

Virginia Balusek, second vice president and program chairperson, introduced Chris Rybak of Hallettsville, Texas. His hour of accordion entertainment of Czech polkas and waltzes was enjoyed by the members. He is a recent graduate of Hallettsville High School.

The next meeting of the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society will be June 3 in the fellowship hall of the First Christian Church. The next state meeting will be held in West, Texas, on April 18.

There was a discussion on the future state meeting of the Texas Czech Heritage Society which will be held on November 8 in the St. Andrews Parish Hall in Hillje, Texas. The Wharton County chapter is the host for the meeting.

Ethel Kuzell Meek, reporter —SPJST-

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, ALBERT HENRY FRANTA, who passed away on February 18, 1997, in a Baytown hospital at the age of 82. He was born on May 24, 1914, in Crosby. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Agnes Franta; his daughter, Peggy Franta Carrell; two brothers; one sister; seven half-brothers; and six half-sisters.

He was in the automobile business from 1935 until retirement in 1977. He was the last of the East Harris County pre-war franchise automobile dealers. He was a member of the Highlands Rotary Club and Knights of Columbus. Mr. Franta enjoyed deep sea fishing, golf and hunting, but his happiest times were spent with his family and grandchildren in his home.

Mr. Franta is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosa Lee Franta; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Pete Hawkins of Baytown, Rosalyn and Dr. Gary Boehme of Mont Belvieu, and James "Jim" Carrell of Livingston; grandchildren, Jay Carrell of Houston, Allison and Richard Sampson of San Antonio, Hather and Mark Henson of Arlington, Jarrod and Angela Boehme of College Station, Bryan Boehme of Mont, Belvieu, and Joanna Boehme of Mont Belvieu; sister, Sedonia Lostak of Crosby; and many nieces and nephews.

A rosary service was conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 20 at Earthman Funeral Home. A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 21 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baytown with Rev. Stephan A. Mandry officiating.

Burial was at White Cemetery in Highlands. Pallbearers were grandsons, Jay Carrell, Jarrod Boehme, and Bryan Boehme; nephews, Daryl Lostak, Kenneth Lostak, and Leonard Twardowski.

Honorary pallbearers were Jay Oberpriller, Floyd Stasney, and Clarence Boehme.

May our departed brother rest in peace with Christ and his blessed memory remain with us forever.

Sister Vala is survived by four daughters, Helen Pavias, Mildred Kucera, Margaret Migl, and Frances Vala, and nine grandchildren.

She was a member of Sokol. As a member of Lodge 88, she will surely be remembered at our Saturday night activities, especially the regular Saturday night

breakfasts for those who had enjoyed dancing before indulging the breakfast treat.

Interment was in Brookside Memorial Park Cemetery in Houston, Texas, on February 10, 1997.

Survivors are two sons, Frank and Tom Babinec, and five grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 803, and honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as captain and received the EAME Campaign Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, and the Victory Medal during World War II. He owned a real estate brokerage business known as BAB Realty and Associates.

Rite of committal was in Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston, Texas.

ALEXANDER., who passed away February 10, 1997, at age 79.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; three sons, James, Dennis, and Larry Alexander; and five grandchildren.

While being a member of our Lodge 88, he served on the Entertainment Committee and was in charge of fraternal affairs. In that capacity, he really enjoyed collecting eye glasses along with working for the Covenant House for abused children. Homer was a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He retired from NASA Defense Contract Administration. He was a member of American Legion Post 560, Holy Name Society, and other charitable organizations and very active at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Eucharistic Minister.

Interment was at Woodlawn Garden of Memories on February 13, 1997, in Houston, Texas.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, E. DEE KRISTOF, who passed away Sunday, January 26, 1997, in a Bryan hospital at the age of 87.

Mr. Kristof graduated from Caldwell High School in 1930 and received his bachelors degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1939. Mr. Kristof was a teacher for the Deanville School for 19 years. He had also worked for the Deanville State Bank. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Deanville, Sons of Herman Lodge 301, SPJST Lodge 17, Deanville Volunteer Fire Department, and was instrumental in starting the Water Corporation Project in Deanville.

Mr. Kristoff was born December 22,

1909, in Deanville, the son of the late Joe and Lillie Wiederhold Kristof.

He married Norma Ida Lambrecht on July 11, 1933, in Yorktown, Texas.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Norma Kristof of Deanville; a daughter, Janice Ripple of Claude, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, W. Lamar and Genevia Kristof of Caldwell; one sister, Margurite Uselton of Austin; one brother, Joe L. Kristof of Seattle, Washington; eight grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 1997, from St. John's Lutheran Church in Deanville with Reverend Grant Housewright officiating. Interment followed in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed member, WELDON KOCICH, who passed away February 11, 1997, at the age of 73.

Rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Thursday, February 13 in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 14 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Wall with Monsignor Larry Droll celebrating the Mass.

Weldon was born February 27, 1923, in Moravia, Texas. He entered the service on October 30, 1942. He served in North Africa and Italy. He married Frances Block from Olfen. On December 39, 1996, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Weldon was involved in farming and driving tire tests at Goodyear Proving

Grounds. While there, he earned a record for driving three million miles with no accidents. This earned Weldon a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

He was a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Wall, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of SPJST Lodge 160, and a member of the Pride of Flette.

Weldon is survived by his wife, Frances of Wall; two daughters, Jocille Roberts and husband Jerry of Whitesboro and Dolores Mask and husband Bobby Mac of Richland Springs; two sons, Marcus Kocich of Oklahoma City and John Kocich and wife Lucy of Wall; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, Ed and Martha Kocich, and a sister, Magdalena Moeller, preceded him in death.

Youth Letters Section District Seven Youth Counselor Reports on Family Fun Day

After several months in my camera, I finally got photographs from the District Seven Fall Family Fun Day developed.

We enjoyed a wonderful lunch and had a brief membership meeting, after which the fun and games began.

Door prizes provided by the attending lodges and our district director, Mr. Bob Bayer, were awarded during the afternoon. There was a drawing for split-thepot. A "guess how many pieces of peanut brittle are in the jar" game, a baking contest, a sewing contest, "42", and other games were played.

Seven State Youth Achievement Day Winners District

Pictured above are the winners of the holiday ornament contest. They are, from let Whitney Bohnenberger (9-11) of Lodge 185; Stacey Branham (15-17) of Lodge 185; and Ashley Anderson (6-8) of Lodge 107, Floresville.

The 1996 State SPJST Youth Achievement Day and Royalty Competition were held Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4, 1996, at the Frank Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas.

The 1996 District Seven Royalty King Stacey Branham and Queen Andrea Mills, both from Lodge 185, competed in the State Royalty competition. They both did an outstanding job and we are very proud of their efforts. Duke Patrick Mills and Duchess Lauren Dunham are also The young people and adults all enjoyed bunco at The District Seven Family Fun Day.

District Seven had many excellent craft and talent entries and the following youth won trophies at State YAD: Ages 9 to 11 Whitney Bohnenberger of Lodge 185 First Place, Science and Education Ages 12 to 14 Jonathan Haag of Lodge 185 First Place, Constructed Items First Place, Special Category Ages 15 to 17 Stacey Branham of Lodge 185 First Place, Pictorial Arts Second Place, Science and Education Second Place, Individual Talent Stacey Branham also won a $500 scholarship and plaque for High Point Winner of District Seven for 1996.

I wish to thank all of the parents who take the time and effort to assist their children in the activities of the SPJST youth club. This is a wonderful opportunity for our youth to become better citizens of tomorrow.

Seven Young People Enjoy 1996 Camp District

The District Seven youth camp was held July 19-21, 1996, at Camp Lone Star in LaGrange.

Campers arrived Friday afternoon for registration and cabin assignments.

Friday evening events included swimming, orientation, new camper and chaperone initiation, and the opening campfire ceremony.

On Saturday, after the raising of the flag and breakfast, groups went to their assigned activities. The junior members made pencil toppers and tic-tac-toe games in crafts while the seniors went canoeing. Then it was time for a snack break and on to the next activity. The seniors enjoyed a session of skeet shooting with Mr. Garland Midget, while the juniors took to the canoes.

After lunch, it was time for the challenge course and swimming. Everyone had such a good time on the challenge course, they want to do the high course at the next camp.

Saturday evening, District Seven youth shared a Hawaiian Party with District Four campers. Everyone had free time afterwards; then it was off to the cabins!

After breakfast Sunday morning, we held a devotional and then went for a hike led by our camp guide, Roxanne. Back at the camp area, everyone enjoyed several rousing games of bunco. Everyone had fun and we are ready to return in 1997.

Youth Club Reports on March Activities Dear Readers, The Snook Youth Club had their monthly meeting on March 5. The meeting was well-attended. Jess Junek and Garrett Janke did crafts that were Easter baskets.

Youth Club Enjoys Easter Activities Dear Readers, We had a lot of fun at our March 5 meeting. First, we made Easter baskets from small white paper sacks and a pipecleaner. Then, we had an Easter egg hunt. I got a lot of candy. Then, Coach Yezak talked to us about career choices and how to succeed. It was really interesting. Next, we had our meeting and decided to go to the movies during Spring Break. I want to see Jungle 2 Jungle.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 2 at 6:30.

Youth Club Reports on March Meeting Cyclone Youth Club met on Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. with President April Cooksey calling the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance and club motto were led by Flag Bearer Scott Hudson. Secretary Ashley Veselka called the roll and read the minutes from our last meeting and Tammy , Baker gave the treasurer's report.

At our meeting, we discussed the District Two Spring Meeting, selling the SPJST 100th Anniversary cookbooks, getting entries ready for YAD in June, and planning a movie and pizza social for Saturday, March 22. Those celebrating birthdays this month are Michelle Rockey and Scott Hudson.

Secretary Ashley Veselka made a motion that our club make a donation in memory of Miro Spanhel, grandfather of members Lisa and Tonya Spanhel. Mr. Spanhel and his wife, Helen, were always generous in donating to our bake sales and doing nice things for our club.

After the meeting, we enjoyed an Easter egg hunt and party. Our next meeting will be April 13 at 2 p.m.

Dear SPJST Readers, The Taiton Youth Club met on Sunday, February 9, 1997, at the Taiton Community Center. The meeting was called to order by Sarah Dluhos. Chad Dorotik recited the pledge and prayer.

Our special visitor was District Youth Counselor Marcy Dorotik. Jeanine Dorotik read the minutes from the last

meeting and read the roll call.

There was no old business to report.

Under new business, we discussed the district spring meeting to be held on March 2, 1997, with Hallettsville hosting.

The club members are to bring a district raffle and the lodge raffle item.

Travis Krpec was our only February birthday celebrant. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to him.

The members made Valentine's Day cards and most of the members read their cards.

Travis and Debbie Krpec brought a game for all of the members. Thank you, Debbie, for the prizes that you donated.

As the charity project for February, the members brought cookies and the cards they made and took them to the Garden Villa Nursing Home to the residents after the meeting was over. The members walked around and visited with many of the residents. We also ran into Mrs. Krutilek who was Lodge 30's youth leader many years ago.

Refreshments for the day were brought by Michael, Jason and Kyle Kaspar. They served valentine cookies, red punch, and treated the members to valentine candy.

Our next meeting will be March 1, 1997, at 9:30 a.m. at the Taiton Community Center.

Youth Club Reports on March Meeting Dear SPJST Readers, The Taiton Youth Club met on March 1, 1997, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Staff in Nada. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Michael Kaspar. The prayer and pledge were led

by Trey Staff. We welcomed our visitors.

They were Connie, Amanda and Savannah Schoelman. The minutes and treasurer's report were presented.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela gave the old business report. The District Six Meeting was to be held on Sunday, March 2, 1997, at St. Mary's in Hallettsville. The members will be performing and singing Easter songs.

SPJST's 100 Year Celebration will be held in Belton on July 12 and 13, 1997.

More information will come later.

A report was given by Paul Schoelman and Kenna Bubela on when they took the valentine cards and cookies to the Garden Villa Nursing Home.

There was no new business to report.

The members read Easter poems and made Easter pictures for the contest.

They were all beautiful.

We celebrated many birthdays for the month of March. We sang "Happy Birthday" to Brent Gold, Megan Marcaurle and Youth Leader Lisa Bubela.

Refreshments were served by Camille, Mandy and Trey Staff. We all enjoyed a beautiful decorated birthday cake, hamburger cheese dip and chips.

The members enjoyed playing Easter games and then received a bag of Easter goodies. The meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting will be April 6, 1997, at the Taiton Community Center.

Dear Lodge Members and Guests, Our annual Easter party will be Saturday, March 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. It will be held in the back yard of Lodge 88.

We will have the annual Easter egg hunt.

We will serve food, and the Easter Bunny will be available in the annex building to visit with the guests and picture taking.

So please remember to bring your camera.

If you forget, the youth club will be selling polaroid photos for $1 each. We will also have two Easter baskets to raffle off.

The evening before, Friday, March 21 at 7 p.m., we will be dying Easter eggs.

We will also be making Easter bunny cakes again this year. We ask everyone to bring two nine-inch round cakes, can icing, coconut and a smile.

We would also like to invite our youth club friends from the other lodges in District Five to attend our annual hunt.

Our youth leader reported the tip of the month, "Ask for help," and our garage sale on April 5, 1997, at the hall. Doors open at 8 a.m. (kids, don't forget to bring items for our table). The meeting was adjourned at 2:20 p.m. After the meeting, we did our monthly projects. We had our Easter egg hunt and celebrated March birthdays with punch and cookies. See you next month.

by President Brooke Bartlett on Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. Jessica Lyon led the Pledge of Allegiance. We had 15 members, four guests and six adults present.

Cookbooks and order forms were passed out to members to sell. Youth were reminded of the District Two Spring Meeting to be held in Elgin on Sunday, March 16. The youth meeting will begin at 1:30. Also, the National Trash-Off is Saturday, April 5. Please be at the lodge

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club Member Elected to BPA Post Karen Bender of Lodge 88, Houston was elected Area Five President for the Business Professionals of America on February 1, 1997. She also competed in the Karen Bender "Verbal Communications—Prepared H" individual competition and won first place State Qualifier. She competed in Dallas, Texas, on March 6-8. She will also attend leadership conferences and competitions.

Karen will attend the National BPS Conference at DisneyWorld in Orlando, Florida, from April 24-29.

Karen is a junior at Stafford High School and is the 1996-97 SPJST State Queen.

Queen's Notebook Dear SPJST Readers, Hi! Many of you have asked me why I haven't written a letter lately. This column was originally designed to introduce everyone to the responsibilities of the SPJST State King and Queen. We are required by the SPJST to make six public appearances during our reign, before we can receive our scholarship.

State King Justin Engelke, State Duke Douglas Galler, State Duchess Krystle Bender and I have made four of our required appearances. They were the Westfest Parade in September, the Texas Fraternal Congress in October, Czech Day at Lodge 88, Houston on October 27 and the Temple Christmas Parade in December.

We have two more appearances, the Ennis Polka Festival Parade in May and the SPJST 100th Anniversary Best Fest Celebration on July 12 and 13 at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton, Texas.

Even though we have all been busy in school, we all still find time to be involved in what the SPJST has to offer. Justin won the contest creating the design on the SPJST cookbook and I won the 1997 Camp T-Shirt Design Contest. No one can remember either the King or Queen winning the contest while during their reign.

I hope you all have a safe and happy Easter.

CZECH NEWS AND CULTURE

History of Czechs in America now available The valuable resource book, History of Czechs in America, was written by Dr. Jan Habenicht of Chicago and published by the Hias Publishing Company of St. Louis in 1910. It was translated into English by Miroslav Koudelka, a member of CGSI, and edited and arranged by Paul M. Makousky, Publication Chair of CGSI. The book has 595 pages (8 1/2" x 11"), is bound by a hard cover and features a beautifully finished metallic blue and white jacket containing a photograph of the Dvorak family in their raspberry field in Minnetonka Township, Minnesota, on flout and the Vasko family on their farm near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, on the back.

Additionsi to the book include an index to the illustrations (276 of them), a foreword to the English edition by Paul M Makousky, a list of the Czech fraternal organizations, maps of the 14 states with the largest Czech populations (appendix II), a complete surname index (over 2,400 names) and a geographical name index.

Even if you don't find your family name(s) in this book, it is very valuable in describing the living conditions and experiences of our Czech forehearers from the mid 1800s to 1910. This book provides the most extensive description of Czech life: in religion, among fraternal organizations, in the press, in theater, and in the struggle for maintaining the Czech heritage.

Celebrate Rites of Spring Czech SpringFest '97 Muziky, Muziky (Music, Music) is in the air for the 1997 Czech SpringFest in Houston on March 23 (Palm Sunday) from 12 noon until 5 p.m. at St. Christopher's Parish Hall on 8150 Park Place Boulevard.

This year there will be more food, more music, and more Easter Egg (kraslice) dec orating. Guests will have the rare opportunity to dine on a feast of Czech specialities such as a Sunday dinner of roast pork, zeli, and green beans and all the trimmings, until 2 p.m. Throughout the afternoon, bowls of delicious Czech/Moravian Kyselice soup and good Czech country sausage will be available. Following the meal, a whole evening's array of varied activities and exhibits for all ages and interests will be presented: traditional spring customs from the Czech countryside include Moravian- and Wendish-style egg-decorating demonstrations and slide presentation; gingerbread decorating; and Moravian folk dance demonstrations with Donna and Guenther Merkle; sing-alongs featuring Karel Matejka's Old Prague-style accordion music, Kovanda's Authentic Czech Band from Fayetteville will perform from 1 to 4 p.m.; a silent auction on many lovely items will be going on and final bids will be announced at 4 p.m.

Czech classes at Lodge 177, Academy Lodge 177, Academy is now offering a series of Czech language classes at the lodge hall on Monday evenings at 7 p.m., through April 7. The instructor is Mr. Nick A. Morris. Emphasis is on vocabulary, commonly-used phrases, conversation, sentence structure, and some pronunciation peculiarities. No test or "grades" are given, and there are very few assignments. The principle requirements are attendance, listening, taking notes, and a few writing exercises. Classes are open to any interested persons and are not limited to SPJST members. Those attending are asked to bring either a spiral or loose-leaf notebook, plus pencils. Family History Show to Feature Mr. Leo Baca The Family History Show on Texas State Network radio will feature Mr. Leo Baca talking about Slavonic genealogical research and immigration on Sunday evening, 10 p.m. to midnight, March 30, 1997. Czech studies program The Czech Heritage Society of Texas, in cooperation with the Wallachian Museum in Roznov pod Radhostem, is arranging a Studies Program scheduled for June 17, 1997, to July 8, 1997.

Some subjects for study will be history, language, cooking, gingerbread and Christmas ornament making, singing and dancing. Other subjects may be added as the schedule is finalized. There will be the possibility of genealogy research, historical tours, and an evening in a typical Czech home.
