The Check's in the Mail

By the time you read this, your local lodge secretary should have received your lodge's annual premium refund check. The checks were mailed by Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas' office on February 5.

"It's a pleasure getting those checks out to the lodges, knowing that they will be put to good use," says Brother Mikulas.

"This annual process of sending premium refund checks to the local lodges started in 1961 as a result of a 1960 convention action.

At the outset, the idea was for the refund to serve as a kind of 'payback' to local lodges in exchange for their collection insurance premiums ,from members.

"These days, thanks to direct billing, members send their insurance premiums directly to the Home Office for processing. In spite of that fact, our policy of sending the annual premium refund checks to local lodges continues. It remains an attractive incentive for local lodges to bring new members aboard," Brother Mikulas explains.

Refunds to lodges for 1996 were paid at a rate of $8.50 per premium paying certificate and $1 per paid-up certificate as of December 31, 1996. Premium refunds to lodges total approximately $175,000 in 1997. The premium refunds that went out last week are in addition to the approximately $30,000 in incentive awards that many lodges will be receiving at the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet on February 22 at Lodge 47, Seaton.

"As you may know, our Society celebrates its 100th anniversary in 1997.

There's nothing that I would like better for our local lodges than for them to

experience a substantial increase in their premium refund checks for 1997," says Brother Mikulas.

"It can happen," he says. "Your efforts to sign up new members will definitely be reflected in your lodge's premium refund check. Let's all pull together to help our SPJST grow."

e Check Your Calendar We received a nice letter this week from Brother Ted Kocian, president of Lodge 54, West along with a copy of the 1997 SPJST calendar. Due to an apparent error in the binding process, the calendar included two months of May and two months of June and was missing the months of March and April.

With that in mind, please take a moment to check your copy of the 1997 SPJST calendar. In the event that you find a copy of the defected calendar in your possession, please contact the President's Office at 1 (800) 7277578.

All SPJST lodge officers for 1996 and 1997 have been invited to the Incentive Banquet, as well as SPJST sales representatives winning in the sales categories for 1996. The event will begin at 2:00 p.m. with registration until 2:50 p.m.

This is very important as tickets will be given out at registration for door prizes to be drawn at the conclusion of the evening. The door prizes will be very nice, so plan to register. Registration will be in lodge order with lodges 1- 54 being at one table and lodges 51 - 200 at the opposite table.

The presentation of awards begins at 3:00 p.m. with district directors making the presentations and Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar presiding as master of ceremonies.

Directly after your lodge has been presented with its award, you will be asked to form a line to have your lodge officers' photo taken. We respectfully ask that you remember that other lodges are being presented throughout the program.

Lodge photos will be printed in the Vestnik. The lodge reporter or president will be asked to give another photo and brief writeup to your local newspaper.

Editor Brian Vanicek, assisted by Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, will be taking the lodge photos in the youth room.

Dinner will be served immediately following all of the presentations at approximately 4:30 p.m. At that time, our featured entertainer, country music star Don Walser, will play for our listening pleasure. His music features old favorites like "Whispering Pines" and "Tumbling Tumbleweed." Mr. Walser is also an accomplished yodeler. He will be accompanied by his band, "The Pure Texas Band." If you feel compelled to dance a step or two after everyone has been served, well, we will enjoy that entertainment, too.

The dinner menu will consist of your choice of beef or chicken fajitas, with all the trimmings. Also featured on the menu will be Cindy Kovar's $50,000 winning recipe, Butch's Wild West TexMex Salad. Ms. Kovar's recipe was personally taste-tested by staff in the famous SPJST "taste-test kitchen" in the Home (Continued on page 4.)

Organizational abilities: Typing (50 wpm), knowledge of Lotus applications, 0S2 and Microsoft software. Knowledge of public relations and graphic design helpful, Creative abilities desired.

Clerk 2: Will assist State Fraternal Activities Coordinator with clerical work, reports and compiling numerical information. Will assist in organizing tournaments and other events. Will handle lodge communications for State FAC while out of the office, Some travel and weekends may be involved.

Skills Needed: Typing (50 wpm), Ability to write press releases and prepare layout for flyers. Should be skilled in Lotus spreadsheets, Amipro and Word applications as well as 0S2 and Microsoft operating systems. Must have â&#x20AC;&#x17E; optimistic personality, initiative, ability to work with people and eagerness to learn. Ability to complete work without supervision extremely important.

Office. As you know, Sister Kovar gave the $50,000 donation to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. Of course, we will also have our traditional celebration cake, baked by Judy Pechal of Lodge 47, Seaton.

Special guest for the evening will be Steven Chudej. A two-time Emmy award winner for costume design, Steven is a member of lodge 135, Ennis.

Many hours of planning and preparation have gone into the banquet. We have inspired to make the evening as entertaining and comfortable as possible.

Readers Write In Support of Higher Education and the SPJST Scholarship Fund Dear Brothers and Sisters, Many of you know me, or may have even seen me on the front page of the Ve.stnik recently. I was the winner of the Paul Newman and Good Housekeeping Charity Recipe Contest. As the grand prize winner, I received a check for $50,000 to be given to my favorite charity. I chose the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund as the recipient of the prize money. Several times after winning, I was asked why I would enter a contest where I would not personally receive the prize money. My answer to that question was, "Sure, I could have used the money to pay bills like everyone else, but I could not have personally written a check for $50,000 to help a cause that I believe in." I feel blessed to have won the contest. Winning the contest has allowed me to give to a cause I believe in.

I have asked Howard Leshikar to set the money in a perpetual fund to pay for scholarships in the future from the interest it earns. I have requested the perpetual fund in hopes of more of your children and grandchildren benefitting from my blessing.

As Brothers and Sisters of the SPJST, I know we are more than just members of an insurance company, we share a common goal of Benevolence, Brotherhood and Fraternalism. In the spirit of Benevolence, Brotherhood and

Fraternalism, I ask that you answer the call of the Home Office for donations for the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. This is in a sense an old-fashioned barn raising, wherehy individuals work toward a common goal. Educating our young members benefits us all, directly and indirectly. We are directl y affected if we as individuals are fortunate enough to be able to attend college. It opens up doors of opportunities to unlimited fields, or if our children or grandchildren attend college, it will allow them to compete in this ever changing technological world we now all live in. Indirectly, education affects us daily, as we go to the doctor and are treated with medical advances, or we go on a trip to visit family. The doctors care and the trip in a plane or a car are both possible because people received a college education. There was a time when members could support their families with very little education, that was "back in the good old days," but now those days are gone.

Investing in a college education, whether it be your own or a stranger's will pay itself back tenfold. I encourage all members to donate today to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. Be thankful to all you have and all you have been given as a result from someone receiving a college education. Let us reach the goal of 100 Scholarships and be proud of what we have given ourselves and others by our efforts.

Lodge Officers' Workshop February 22 at Lodge 24, Cyclone The important role of the local lodge and its officers will be emphasized at this year's local lodge workshop to be held February 22 at Lodge 24, Cyclone. The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include a complimentary luncheon. The SPJST Supreme Lodge Officers and Editor will be presenting timely information on matters of importance to local lodges.

"The discussions will be informal," says SPJST Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir, who is coordinating the project. "We are optimistic that this format will encourage an exchange of ideas between lodges and between all concerned."

Following the noon luncheon, the SPJST's 1996 Fraternalist of the Year presentation will take place.

attend the workshop. Lodges that will be presented with incentive awards at the Awards Dinner following the workshop at Lodge 47, Seaton will be authorized reimbursement for one additional car.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville Reports on January Meeting Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, January 26, 1997, being reset from January 12 due to the cold, icy weather. At 2 p.m. President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order followed by the pledge to the flag and roll call of officers.

Gayenell Chudej read a resolution of sympathy for our departed member, Erwin Holy. Our deepest sympathy to his wife, Evelyn, and family. Erwin was a past president, secretary and a sales representative for our lodge.

Our guests were then recognized as District Six Director Matt Vanek and wife Henrietta and District Six State Field Representative Jim Wiest.

Secretary Margaret Smotek read the minutes to the last meeting. FAC Lillie Balusek and Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave their reports.

Under old business, a donation to the Lillie Appelt Johnson Youth Center was discussed and tabled. Helen Zabransky was appointed to check with the youth center director for suggestions. Also tabled was the sponsoring of a ball team.

Mary Matula reported on the January Bingo Party at Stevens Rest Home.

Members assisting were Evelyn Sklar, Leona Miculka, Mary Matula, Margaret Smotek, and Elsie Mascheck. Their next bingo will he Monday, February 3.

The officers and members were reminded of the Local Lodge Officers' Workshop and Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet to he held February 22. Anyone going should sign up with President Siptak as soon as possible.

District Director Vanek then installed the officers for 1997.

An appreciation plaque was accepted

by Evelyn Holy from President Siptak for her husband, Erwin, for the many years of his dedicated service to our lodge.

Brother Holy was to receive the plaque but passed away Monday, January 20.

Also presented by President Siptak was an appreciation plaque to Annie Vahalik, past youth leader and president, for her dedicated work to the lodge.

Youth Leader Shirley Kalmus presented Annie with a gift from the youth club being a beautiful clock with "SPJST Youth Club" inscribed on it.

Under correspondence, a letter was read from Hallettsville High School regarding a scholarship. The members voted to contribute $100 to their scholarship fund.

to the members.

President Siptak reminded the members that the District Six Spring Meeting will be Sunday, March 2 at St. Mary's Hall to be hosted by our lodge. Plans will be made at the next meeting.

The meeting adjourned followed by a delicious lunch with the meal prayer given by Joe Siptak.

18, Elgin Reports on anuary Meeting

President Jim Magoney called the meeting to order and asked Marvin Marek to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. We remained standing for silent prayer for all our deceased and sick members.

Agnes Eschberger read the minutes.

They were approved as read. Agnes Rupp gave the treasurer's report. We paid all the bills and taxes and we had money (not much) in the hank. Hooray! for Lodge 18. We will be getting some refunds. Great work, Agnes!

Youth Leader Ruby Bowen reported that the youth group will go skating sometime in February.

Bill Schmidt gave the bar report. He needs help in the bar. Only one person has signed up to work. Please help if you can. Gladys Magoney gave the ticket report and turned in some proceeds from dances. George Liardon gave the membership report. We have nine new members and lost one, leaving a total of 629 members. Mildred David reported on the Memorial Fund. No new donations were received this month.

House Party Chairman Irene Helgren thanked everyone who helped take the Christmas decoration down. She thanked Evelyn Gustafson for purchasing and donating 12 candle rings to complete the decorating. Thank you, Irene, for furnishing all the candles. The hall looked great for the holidays.

Vice President/FAC Evelyn Gustafson reported that the Penny Drive has been extended. We still need your pennies.

Please help if you can. Evelyn also reported that there will be a domino tournament in Buckholts on Saturday, January 25. The State Domino Tournament will be in Taylor on March 8. We have the workshop coming February 22. Anyone can attend free.

The banquet is free for the officers.

Anyone else may attend; the charge is $8.95. Evelyn must know by February 1 to make reservations.

The Audit Committee completed their audit and all books are in great order.

Artie Monson thanked all the helpers at the Saturday dances. King of Swing will no longer play. She has booked another band, Allen Tally and the Country Playboys, and the Lost Wolf Band has asked to play at Elgin SPJST. Please continue to help Artie.

All the chairman then thanked everyone for their help and support in 1996. It was a good year and we will make 1997 even better. With the leadership of our chairpeople and all the good workers, we will make it and we have fun while we •*rork.

President Jim Magoney then thanked outgoing President Dolly Hajda for the two years she had in office. She brought us a long way and we will look to her help to take us farther. Thank you, Dolly Hajda.

Jim also thanked our faithful workers—Thomas (Sack) Ries, Arthur Wiesner, Alex Rohlke, Marvin Marek and Oscar Helgren. They cut the grass, repair things, replace filters and pretty much anything else that needs repair.

Thank you, guys, we know you put in a lot of hours and it seems we still do not appreciate it. We really do—sometimes we just forget to tell you.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the New Year's Eve black-eye peas and corn bread. Everyone enjoyed it.

During the meeting, Mary introduced her lovely family to our group. For as nervous as Mary was, she did real well remembering each one's names. A little later in the meeting, President Macha presented Mary with a beautiful gold wrist watch from the lodge.

After the meeting was adjourned, everyone was invited to have cake and coffee. A strawberry cake decorated in purple and yellow inscribed with the words "Thank you, Mary, for 27 years of Loyal and Dedicated Service" was baked and decorated by Sandra Wiles. The cake was donated by Sandra and Miranda Wiles and Adolph and Delores Macha.

At twelve noon, President Macha led us in grace before the meal. Then, baked and fried chicken and sausage were served along with all of the delicious veg-

etables, salads, and desserts that were brought by the wonderful ladies of the lodge. Thanks, ladies, for a job well done and to President Macha for picking up the chicken.

Fifty-seven members and guests were registered. Other guests included Donna and David Pesak. David's parents are Joyce and Charlie Pesak. Willie May Nesvadba was a guest of Ivory Shilk.

81, Needville Reports on January Meeting

Sunday, January 19, 1997, was a special day at Lodge 81 in Needville. Mary Werner was honored by the lodge for her 27 years of service for serving as our secretary-financial secretary and also for her many years as kitchen chairman.

To start the event off, Mary was thoroughly surprised when 13 members of her family entered the hall at 11:45 a.m.

Members of her family that were our guests included Jo, Norman and Wendel

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi won $100 for the charity of their choice in the December drawing held in conjunction with the 1996 SPJST membership drive. Lodge members voted to give the money to the Salvation Army in Corpus Christi. One death was reported since our last meeting. Our sister, Vlasta Hurta of Needville, passed away. Vlasta was an active member of our lodge until her health began to hold her back. She also worked many Wednesday nights in the kitchen while we were still having bingo.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed sister. Sympathy is extended to her family. May she rest in peace.

Members on the sick list include Jerry Blinka, Adeline Bacica, Louise Newman, Mildred Vacua, LaVerne Davis, Rosie Schwettmann, Helen Teykl, Leona Mohler, and Emil Pollock. Our prayer is that the Lord will reward each of you with days of better health. Get-well wishes to the others who are on the sick list.

President Macha was delighted to say that the work and installation of the barbecue pit has been completed. President Macha was sad to announce that Edgar Kleihege, the gentleman who did the pipe work on the pit, passed away suddenly.

The town of Needville and surrounding area lost a very valuable person. Mr. Kleihege helped any organization whether he was a member or not. He was a true asset to the community and will be deeply missed. Sympathy is extended to his sister and her family. In regards to the pit, Johnnie and Emma Kujaw are to paint it.

We were reminded by President Macha that the fraternal service worksheet needs to be completed and given to Vincent Newman at the next meeting.

Every member needs to fill out one of these sheets. This is of great importance to the SPJST. Due to the icy weather, the trees did not get trimmed as had been planned.

This will be done at a later date.

The subject of the air conditioning was presented. Mr. Ernest Feldhoff is to start on the reconstruction of the room that houses the air conditioning units as soon as possible. When Mr. Feldhoff completes his project, then the new air conditioning units will be installed.

Mr. A.G. Palat reminded us that Eddie Kovar, one of our SPJST members is in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville, and that he would like to have visitors.

Sometimes when you are in the good little town of Needville. Stop by and visit with Mr. Kovar.

In the correspondence department, President Macha read literature from the 1996 Needville High School graduating class thanking the lodge for its donation to the Pro Grad Program. Mr. Chuck Pearce from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville sent thanks to the lodge for the oranges and apples that were received for Christmas. Mrs. Louise Newman sent a thank-you card thanking everyone for the cards, visits, phone calls, and prayers.

Her son, Vincent, reported that his mother is staying with them. She is still going for therapy and is doing remarkably well.

Helen and Harry Teykl sent thanks for remembering them during their surgeries and recuperation time. President Macha also read information about the workshop to be held in Cyclone on February 22, 1997. Those that are planning to go need to inform him now.

Congratulations to Emma Kujawa again—saw in the Herald Coaster her championship cookie recipe.

Since my last report, Mother Nature has been providing us with some miserable weather. Thank goodness the ice storm did not get any worse or last longer.

There were some broken tree limbs and power outages throughout the area. In our area, school was cancelled for two days. The ground is thoroughly saturated. We have been having a lot of rain plus fog and humidity in the air. There is no chance to do any drying up. This is winter and we still have the month of February facing us, so we better prepare ourselves.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Don't forget your loved ones on February 14. Love knows no limit to its endurance; no one to its trust, no fading of its hope: it can outlast anything.

Our next meeting is Sunday, February 16, 1997, at the lodge hall in Needville.

Lodge 88, Houston Reports on Activities Fraternal Activities Coordinator Larry Pflughaupt is off to a good start! He announced at the meeting that he is ready to get donations—glasses and clothes.

He reminded us about the defensive driving courses on February 20 and 21 and April 24 and 25.

The Birthday Club luncheons were very good and enjoyed by all. Don't forget their luncheons are always on the first and second Wednesdays each month.

They surely beat cooking at home for one!

There is an important date coming up soon and that is the District Five Spring Meeting on March 2 at Lodge 196, Houston West, 17810 Huffmeister Road in Cypress, Texas 77429. This is an important meeting which includes the election of officers.

Alice and D.J. Motal and their children including grandchildren enjoyed a trip to California. They were surprised to see so much snow.

We had several of our hard working loyal members in the hospital and I am happy to say they are at home and doing fine: Mike Trefell, Lydia Marsh, Homer Alexander, Louis Roznovsky, Nat Gonzales and King Hegwood. It was a rush to get King to the hospital where he had a triple by-pass! Special greetings also go to another popular and loyal member, Robert Martinak.

Tops in insurance selling in our lodge for December is Victor Janak, who also had been in the hospital not too long ago, and Jeffery Barcak is in the Consistency Club. Congratulations to you both!

As usually we have some mighty good orchestras for the rest of February: Bobby Jones (polka and variety) on the 15th and Manny Green (big band music) on the 22nd.

Coming up in April is the Blue Room Party on April 6. This includes cocktails, dinner and dancing.

Lodge 133, San Antonio Reports on January Meeting Lodge 133 held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, January 19 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. There were 16 members in attendance.

Members who are ill include Lucille Dlugosh and Evelyn Matula who is recovering from surgery. We wish them both a speedy recovery. Sister Lucille Hill passed away in December. Our sincere sympathy is extended to her family and friends. May she rest in eternal peace with our Lord.

Couples celebrating anniversaries in January were Bob and Jarolyn Popp (19 years), Ernest and Ophie Popp (55 years), Joe and Viola Spacek (53 years), and Ray and Donna Schimcek (7 years).

President Popp informed members that we did reach our goal of 12 new members for 1996. Auditing Committee Chairman Viola Kurtz reported that the lodge's financial records for 1996 were audited and were found to be in good condition.

Lodge 177, Academy Czech Classes Begin February 24 Dear Members and Interested Persons: We are happy to announce that we are finally getting ready to launch a series of Czech language classes at Lodge 177, Academy. Final details will be ironed out at our next regular monthly lodge meeting on Wednesday, February 12, but our present plans call for our first class (and organizational meeting) to take place on Monday evening, February 24 at our lodge hall. At that meeting, we will briefly discuss the evenings a majority prefer for the classes, and the remainder will consist of the first segment of actual instruction. The instructor will be Mr. Nick A. Morris.

Emphasis will be on vocabulary, commonly-used phrases, conversation, sentence structure, and some pronunciation peculiarities. No test or "grades" will be given, and there will be very few assignments. The principle requirements will be attendance, listening, taking notes, and a few writing exercises.

It should be fun and informative.

Classes are open to any interested persons and are not limited to SPJST members. Those attending will be asked to bring either a spiral or looseleaf notebook, plus pencils. and John McCormick came to have singa-long.

Every Tuesday morning, Frank Ramos comes to have Bible Study. In the afternoon, Annie Stavinoha, Ida Gasch, and Toni Kramer came to help with bingo!

Every Wednesday morning, different churches came to have services for the residents.

Every Thursday morning, Father Ramsey, Milton Legendre, Rosie Kovar, and Annie Stavinoha with St. Michael's Catholic Church came to have mass. In the afternoon, the Presbyterian, Catholic, Methodist, Immanuel, and Damon Baptist ladies took turns coming to have crafts.

Every Friday afternoon, Mildred Novak came to help roll hair.

On Wednesday morning, January 15, Peggy and Patty came to sing. Thanks to Harold Heidemann for setting up the equipment.

Monday afternoon, January 20, Ed Pisklak came and provided music on the accordion.

Tuesday morning, January 21, Garland Hurtye with Fort Bend Humane Society brought pet "Sissy" for therapy for the residents.

Tuesday evening, January 25, Larry Ognoski, George Lolley, and Fritz Koehne provided music and singing.

The Birthday Party which was held Friday, January 31 included Louis Vacek entertaining on the accordion and piano.

A Flower and Gift Shop provided the corsages. Prime Care donated a beautiful cake. Happy Birthdays for the month of January were residents Agnes Broz, Emilie Hartfield, James Nail, Joe Barta, and Cecelia Trammel, and staff Paula Vanek and Grace Vargas.

The residents enjoyed all the activities during the month of January.

Thanks to all denominations of churches and to the volunteers that do services in the home for the residents.

There will be seven two-hour plus sessions, with short breaks. Those participating will be asked to pay a nominal fee to cover lodge expenses and remuneration to the instructor.

Past participants submitted very favorable end-of-course evaluations and comments. The classes will not be "stilted" or formal. Mr. Morris is a very qualified instructor of the Czech language, having had several years experience translating and interpreting the language in the Executive Branch of the Federal Government, much of that working in Europe with persons from the former Czechoslovakia. He is also a former editor of the Vestnik (before becoming president of the Supreme Lodge), and wrote the series of 32 Czech lessons that have appeared, and are appearing, currently, in the Vestnik.

He is a degreed and Texas-certified public school teacher.

Pass the word and join us on February 24! It will be a pleasant and rewarding experience.

Concho and Tom Green CHS Meets February 16 Runnels,

The first quarterly meeting of the Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Czech Heritage Society of the Concho Valley will be held Sunday, February 16, 1997, at 2:30 p.m. in the Rowena SPJST Hall.

"Many important decisions are on the agenda," Louis Kokes, president of the local chapter, stated.

Plans will be made for October Czech Festival celebration. Committees will be appointed to work out the program of entertainment and food, publicity, and other details. The society's 1996 Festival was a successful event and members are eager to increase the celebration. It was sponsored by SPJST District Four and the Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society.

After the business meeting, a Valentine party will be held. There will be a drawing for the Czech Heritage King and Queen, President Kokes stated.

Entertainment for the evening will be bingo. Everyone is asked to bring one or two white elephant gifts for the prizes.

A Dutch lunch of finger foods and snacks will be served. So bring sandwiches, dips, chips, cookies and cake.

President Kokes extends an invitation to everyone to come out and enjoy an evening of fun and fellowship. Bude me mit dobry cas. We will have a good time.

Dancing For Life!

Looking for a sip from the foun-

tain of youth, or a spring tonic, or that something in your otherwise pretty-good-life that seems to be missing? If so, dancing can be the answer.

Dance is the wedding of movement to music. It spans culture from simple swaying at the high school prom to soaring ballet. It is recreation, exercise, socialization and communication, all in one activity. While the origin of dance is lost in prehistoric times, study of primitive cultures reveals that men and women have always danced.

And why not? Dancing adds life to your years and years to your life! And thanks to our diverse ethnic heritage in Texas, dance opportunities are all around.

While country/western dance is popular with the young folks, other options exist for the maturing persons looking for fun, exercise and socialization. Two great examples here in Texas are polka and Cajun dancing.

Polka or Cajun dancing really can do it all! Dancing four hours each day on a Saturday and Sunday will provide the exercise you seek, at a fraction of the cost of a health club, and with a lot more fun.

It will help you stay trim, and smile all the while.

Campo Hosts Texas Polka Music Awards El

The Texas Polka Music Association (I PMA) and the El Campo Chamber of Commerce announced that El Campo will host the 1997 Texas Polka Music Awards March 8-9 in the El Campo Civic Center.

The Texas Polka Music Awards honor each year the bands and musicians who have contributed to the development, enjoyment and preservation of polka music and dancing in Texas. Now in its seventh year, the TPMA awards recognize best bands, best arrangers, song of the year, and many more categories. A special lifetime achievement award is given to a person who has made a significant contribution to promoting and preserving this important part of our cultural heritage in Texas.

"It is my lifetime dream to recognize and honor those who have done so much to ensure that our future generations will enjoy polka music too," said Julius Tupa, TPMA Executive Director. "I cannot think of amore fitting tribute than to bring together, under one roof, many of Texas' finest polka bands and the people who love their music," he added.

Dancing and musical enjoyment begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, lasting until 11 p.m., with four of Texas' best polka bands. Sunday activities begin with a polka mass at 10 a.m., and dancing from noon until 7:30. went. Polka or Cajun dancing isn't 'only for partners—it's a place where-singles can meet and socialize, too.

Polka dances can be found every weekend in the many American Legion, VFW, SPJST and KC halls across the state. Churches also sponsor polka dances in conjunction with fund raising festivals. And some towns sponsor annual festivals complete with the usual array of crafts, good food, and good times.

Knowing how to find the dances can be the tricky part, but it's made easy by the dance schedule published in the quarterly newsletter of the Polka Lovers Klub of America (PoLKA). Call (281) 480-3965 for information.

Cajun dances are held twice monthly in the Houston area. The Cajun French Music Association (Houston chapter) sponsors a dance the second Saturday of every month at SPJST Lodge 142, located at 5508 Nolda, just south of I-10 off T.C. Jester. Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences Announces Special Conference Set for July 12 - 13 Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) announces a special conference on "Czech Americans in Transition: Challenges and Opportunities for the Future."

The conference will be held in conjunction with the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (SPJST).

The conference will be held at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton, Texas, on July 1213, 1997. The program will focus on the following three issues of interest to Czech-Americans: 1) Ethnicity and the Preservation of Language and Culture (includes presentations on history and genealogy).

2) Czech-American Archives and Libraries and Their Future.

3) Relations Between CzechAmericans and the Czech Republic.

The open format of the Conference will allow discussion of other topics of interest to the participants. Whenever appropriate, Slovak aspects would be covered as well Conference participants will have the opportunity to attend various cultural and social programs scheduled during the two-day celebration, all of which will be held on-site in the Expo Center.

The events include: 1) band and orchestra performances throughout each afternoon and evening; 2) folk singing and dance performances; 3) a display of folk costumes; 4) historical presentations focusing on the 100-year history of the SPJST; 5) museum and archival

displays; 6) demonstrations of traditional cooking. Presentations on the new Czech Cultural Centers to be built in LaGrange and Houston, Texas, are also planned. An estimated 10 to 20,000 people are expected to attend the twoday celebration.

Hotel accommodations for SVU members are available in nearby Temple, Texas. The most convenient destination for air travelers is Austin, Texas. Special group rates for air travel to Austin and rental car travel to the hotel in Temple are available through MEGATRAVEL, a travel agency located in Temple.

In Memory of Benjamin Petrusek

We, the officers and members of Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville, express our sympathy to the families of our departed brother, ERVIN GLANTON KAASE, who died at the age of 70 years in Houston on December 18, 1996.

Funeral services were held from the Salem Lutheran Church in Welcome, Texas, with the Rev. Walter Schindehette officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Erwin Kaase was born in Nelsonville, Texas, on August 27, 1926, to Willie and Emma (Maeckel) Kaase.

He was married to the former Lirva Eckermann on September 4, 1954.

He retired from Clark and Courts Printing Company. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 201, Austin County Farm Bureau, the Welcome Lutheran Church, and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

His survivors are his wife, Lirva Jane; one son, Kenneth William Kaase; two sisters; and one brother.

Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Services were under the direction of Waltrip Funeral Home of Houston, Texas.

Benjamin John Petrusek, 75, of Metairie, Louisiana, passed away at his home December 15, 1996. A memorial service was held in Metairie on December 17 followed with a full military honors service at the Houston National Cemetery on December 18.

Born in Austin County, he was the son of the late Frank and Jane Petrusek of Wallis, Texas. He was a retired micropaleontologist for Arnaco Explorations and had lived in Metairie for 34 years.

His military service included four years of active service during World War II and 34 years in the active reserves, retiring with the rank of Captain. He was a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church of Metairie, Louisiana.

Survivors include his v,ife, Minnie (Mokry) Petrusek of Metairie; daughter Cynthia O'Donnell of Metairie; son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Debbie Petrusek of Memphis, Tennessee; brother Erwin Petrusek of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; sisters, Irene Neshyba of Corvallis. Oregon, and Ruth Jurik of Beaumont, Texas; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and other relatives.

Aldon Schiller was born March 27, 1929, to Frank and Louise (Janecek) Schiller in Sealy.

Mr. Schiller was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation as a maintenance loader operator.

On June 26, 1954, he was married to the former Bernice Stetenpahl.

He is survived by his daughters and son-in-laws, Sandra and Roland Schiflet of Tomball and Wendy and Mark Lamp of Bellville; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Veneita Schiller and Tracy and Marty Schiller, all of Bellville; nine grandchildren; and three sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bernice, and two brothers.

She and her husband owned Muska Floors for 44 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Wednesday Bridgettes, Golf Association, Bridge Club, and SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia.

Survivors are a daughter, Carol Beth Allen of Hallettsville; two sons, Emil David Muska of Moravia and James Thomas Muska of Sugar Land; one brother, Ira J. Blahuta of Moravia; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Emil A. Muska on March 7, 1987; a son, Donald Ray Muska on December 14, 1976; and one brother, Guthrie Blahuta.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Saturday, January 18 at Kubena Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held Sunday.

R.L. Miller was born March 30, 1921, in Fort Worth. He lived in Fort Worth all his life. He worked for 47 years for Motheral Printing Company, retiring in 1986. He served in the army during World War II. He was also past master of Julian Field Lodge No. 908, Scottish Rite and Moslah Shrine Temple Legion of Honor. He was also past high priest of Texas Chapter and Council, American Legion Post No. 569 and a 50-year member of SPJST Lodge 92 and Elk's Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florine Louise Miller, and son, Darris Don Miller.

Survivors are daughters and sons-inlaw, Sharon and Ray Miller of Weatherford and Judy and Glen LeMay of Lafayette, Colorado; brother Bennie Miller of Fort Worth; sisters Christine Cave of Fort Worth and Lillian Jacobson of Boerne; three grandchildren; and com panion Ann Kendall of Fort Worth.

Youth Letters Section District Two Young People Plan Ice Skating Party Dear Readers, It's hard to believe the first month of 1997 is drawing to an end. It has really been a true January with the cold and ice.

District Two members, how about a little more ice in February? Our annual District Two Skating Party will be on ice.

With the suggestion of many youth members and leaders, we will take advantage of Bell County's new ice rink.

Make plans for Saturday, February 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at, the Bell County Expo on IH-35. As always, please invite a friend to enjoy the afternoon with you.

6, Cottonwood Youth Club Plans Easter Activities Lodge

Dear Readers, In our meeting, we discussed making something for the nursing home for Easter. We will hold our Easter party on Sunday, March 23. We will also have a raffle at the party. There will be an Easter egg hunt and fried chicken supper.

We donated dish towels to the kitchen in our lodge and also baby food jar labels were donated for a needy project.

13, Dime Box Youth Club Reports on January Meeting Lodge

The Dime Box Youth Club held their monthly meeting on Sunday, January 19 at 6 p.m. Lamanda called the meeting to order and Heather led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The treasurer's report was given by Nick and approved.

We discussed bringing old Christmas

cards to our next meeting for the St. Jude Hospital. We also talked about going ice skating on February 16. We will meet at the SPJST Hall at 12 noon. Sounds like fun!

Don't forget about our bake sale dates that we talked about, so maybe we can go to Astroworld later.

As a backdrop to the story, the movie provides a glipse of life in Czechoslovakia during the waning days of the Communist regime, incorporating life footage of events leading to the regime's collapse.

"Unusual camera angles capture the beauty of Prague and the surrounding Countryside," writes Jerry Hosek of Dallas. "Many are scenes which could he familiar to those who have been there."

According to Mr. Hosek, those who attended a recent screening of the film in Dallas came away pleased. The movie, which is in Czech with English subtitles, opens February 21 in Dallas at the Inwood Theatre located at Inwood Road and Lover's Lane. Houston area residents are encouraged to read their local movie listings for a screening of Kolya to take place at a future date in their area.

Czech classes at Lodge 177, Academy Lodge 177, Academy will launch a series of Czech language classes at the lodge hall beginning Monday evening, February 24. The instructor will be Mr. Nick A. Morris. Emphasis will be on vocabulary, commonly-used phrases, conversation, sentence structure, and some pronunciation peculiarities. No test or "grades" will be given, and there will be very few assignments. The principle requiremerits will be attendance, listening, taking notes, and a few writing exercises. It should be fun and informative.

Classes are open to any interested persons and are not limited to SPJST members.

Those attending will be asked to bring either a spiral or loose-leaf notebook, plus pencils. There will be seven two-hour plus sessions, with short breaks. Those participating will be asked to pay a nominal fee to cover lodge expenses and remuneration to the instructor. Pass the word and join us on February 24!
