Looking back and looking ahead...

Working together gets things done Editor's Note: On January 2, 1997, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska participated in an interview at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. The purpose of this interview was to address some of the issues relating to the SPJST's performance in 1996 and plans for 1997. The following transcript reveals their views on a range of issues related to SPJST fraternal and insurance operations. What kind of year did the SPJST have in 1996?

H.L. Generally stated, it was good. It was a convention year and we came through that process very well — even though we had to evacuate the building for the two fire alarms. Seriously, our fraternal program and insurance program both looked good. L.M. Right. The Society reported solid gains in several areas, including operations and premium income. Membership also remained stable. H.L. I want to say a little about our efforts in working to revitalize lodges and get new programs going. Overall, it was

And certainly, the membership has provided tremendous local support for the project.

Working together, great things are possible in 1997 — and beyond. a positive experience; still, there were always new challenges needing to be addressed. It would be nice if there was one button that you could push and make everything right. It doesn't work that way. It takes time to set up meetings and identify what will work in a particular area. And, even though it was a banner year in terms of participation in our youth

pen, we've got to work together. There was some good team-building that took place between various lodges and the Home Office in 1996. I'd really like to see more of that.

program, we didn't activate as many new youth clubs as we had anticipated. I'd like to get more active clubs going in '97. L.M. It's very important for a local lodge to have a vision of where it is headed. In some cases, we were able to assist lodges in achieving their objectives. We need to do more of that in 1997. For that to hap-

LM. That's a good example. It's always a high point when you can see fraternalism making a difference in a local lodge. Members extending comfort to other members in their time of need or performing acts of kindness in the name of the SPJST. Those are the little victories that help define the kind of organization we are. Added up, they illustrate the tremendous positive impact of the SPJST in Texas. You made a reference to the 1996 SPJST Convention in Arlington. What do you believe were the most significant items to come out of the convention?
