While we're on the subject of initiative, hats off to the many members of the SPJST who over the last year contributed their time and support to the development of two exciting projects related to the Czech community in Texas. Plans for a Czech Cultural Center in Houston and a Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in LaGrange were unveiled. The Houston project got underway with a gala fund raiser on August 28 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Houston while supporters of the LaGrange project kicked off their fundraising drive with a Czech-style dinner and dance at the Knights of Columbus Community Center in LaGrange on December 15.

Both events were well attended, attracting supporters, including many SPJST members, from around the state. A summary of the Houston gala ff appeared in the September 25 Vestnik. A report on the LaGrange event will be forthcoming.

When you hear the SPJST defined as a "fraternal benefit society," what does that mean to you? From its earliest days, the SPJST has sought to fulfill two very important functions: (1) To provide its members with readily available life insurance coverage; and (2) To provide a structured environment for social interaction and support. To this day, the SPJST strives to uphold these principles.

Group interaction has always been an important part of membership in the Society. So much so that in 1972, SPJST convention delegates voted that it become mandatory for delegates to subsequent conventions attend a majority of their local lodge meetings in the three years preceding the convention.

In spite of the organizational emphasis on regular attendance, there remains a growing concern that member participation is on the decline. Indeed, this is a disturbing trend and has in recent years been a matter of concern for fraternal benefit societies nationwide.

What about your local lodge? If your member participation is on the decline, let it serve as a call to action. Your initiative and cooperative effort can enable the SPJST to experience a dramatic increase in member participation in 1997 and into the 21st century.

And, here's the best part: It won't take a convention action and there's no "catch" involved. An amazing revitalization of our lodge system will take place, starting in 1997, if every "active lodge member" can get only one other person involved in the local lodge over the next twelve months. And, if you don't already consider yourself an active lodge member, let it be you!

Getting involved. It's so much more than just going to the meetings. It's about building bonds with other members of your lodge. Sometimes it happens in an instant. More often than not we have to work at it. It is through shared experiences that we build lasting relationships.

It is through these relationships that membership in a lodge and in the SPJST becomes meaningful.

The future of our local lodges is up to each of us. May we focus our minds on how we can help our lodges adapt and transform them to fit the changing needs of our members and our communities.

rrr Lessons from the Past ...

Sure I remember the 1930s...

Keeping clean was a problem because soap cost money. For a time we washed our laundry with a soap made of pork fat, wood ashes and salt. It worked, but it took a lot of sunning to get the smell out of the sheets.

For entertainment we had the public library, endless talk, long walks, any number of games. We played music, sang . . . Enormous invention went into our pleasures. Anything was an excuse for a party: all holidays, birthdays called for celebration. When we felt the need to celebrate and the calendar was blank, we simply proclaimed a Jacks-Are-Wild Day. It wasn't all fun and parties . . . But I do remember it as a time of warmth and mutual caring. If one of us got hurt or ill or in trouble, the others rallied with what they had. Everyone shared bad fortune as well as good...

From the President's Office 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Lists Recent Contributors Through December 18, a total of $4,763 in cash donations had been collected for the 1997 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. "That translates to nine $500 schlarships," says State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky, who is coordinating the fund-raising effort.

"All of the money that is collected goes directly towards scholarships," says Brother Klinkovsky, adding that, "Your financial gifts are tax-deductible." A scholarship contribution form appears on page six of this issue.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood Reports on December Meeting We had our meeting on December 1 at 1 p.m. The youth club led the pledge.

All minutes were read and approved.

We had 27 members present and six guests, Jerry Mikulas, Genie Watts, Dorothy and Jerry Kucera, and Sid and Justine Pokladnik.

Birthdays in December were for Christine Matus and Dorothy Kucera.

The $10 door prize was won by Mary Krizan. The $8 was won by someone not present. The $5 plus prize was won by Christine Svrcek.

We had a special recognition for George Straten who is our financial secretary for 35 years. He received a lovely jacket, mug and plaque. He also received a ham and turkey. He was named Fraternalist of the Year at our lodge.

We had a recognition for our District Three Director Sid Pokladnik for his 32 years of service.

We elected officers for 1997. They were installed by Sid Pokladnik. 24, Cyclone Reports on December Meeting Lodge

Dear Members, Our meeting was called to order by President Bobby Hoelscher. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for our deceased members.

After the meeting, I learned that one of our members, Mary Martinet, passed away so we want to extend our sympathy to her family.

On the sick list are Dorothy Haisler and Henry Zabcik. Lisa Kirby was ill but she is doing fine now. She is due to have her baby next month. We are also glad Samuel Vanicek came through the surgery on his jaw and hope all the results are fine.

The minutes were read by Barbara Macek. We reviewed the prices for our hall for next year 1997.

Reports were given by Treasurer Penny Coots, Bar Chairman Rosamond Baker, Booking Chairman Louise Zavodny, Ticket Chairman Bobby

Hoelscher and Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny. Brian Vanicek read us the minutes of the board meeting.

We elected Rosamond Baker as our new youth leader after Melanie Zavodny chose at our November meeting not to hold that position another year. We want to thank her and her assistant David Nauert for the great job they did. We will support Rosamond in that job.

We had the pleasure of donating the pits for the Rogers Fire Department to use for their fund raiser. We also voted on giving $25 towards the Rogers Project Celebration for the seniors of 1997.

New members we accepted to our lodge are Mandy Jasmin Baker, James Derek Campbell, and Nicholas A. Sperling.

We want to thank the outgoing officers: President Bobby Hoelscher, Vice President Brian Vanicek, Secretary Barbara Macek, and Board members Melanie Zavodny, Rosamond Baker, Brian Vanicek, and Bernice Sebek.

Some of these members will be in different positions working in their lodge. We also want to thank Louise Zavodny for her longtime position as a Booking Chairperson. She will still continue selling insurance which is a very important position for we also need to encourage our sales representatives this is what keeps our lodge going.

Christmas Party Held December 14

Our Christmas party that was held Saturday, December 14 was a success with more than 150 people attending.

We especially want to thank the youth club for the Memorial Service. The speaker was Leroy Schiller. Those members who passed away in the year of 1996 were Ella K. Andel, Edwin J. Milian, Ben Svoboda, Ben Zabcik, Willie R. Janicek, Clara Lewis, and Benjamin H. Tyroch.

The youth program was nice and we want to thank Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny and Assistant Youth Leader David Nauert and all the youth members for presenting it so well.

We then had the installation of the officers and the board. Having the honor was District Two Director Willie Koh utek.

We presented Louise Zavodny with a gift for all her dedicated Work as a booking chairman for so many years.

Special guests were Supreme Lodge President Howard and Mary Leshikar, District Two Director Willie and Adeline Kohutek, and State Youth Director Joni and Kenny Lange.

Birthdays were for Helen Tome, Carroll Hudson, Freddie Veselka, David Nauert, Valerie Sebek, Donald Malovets, Christopher Cabla, Arleen Mayeux, Tina Kirby, Adam Freeman, Ramona Gerich, Larry Coots, and Lisa Spanhel.

Anniversaries were for Joe and Lorene Haisler, Wilbert and Margaret Mikeska, Ray and Doris Coots, Bobby and Alice Hoelscher, Jerry and LaVerne Cabla, and Dan and Pat Sebek.

Harold Vanicek of the 3-A Cooking Team loads hot coals into the pit. The clear, cool weather made for ideal cooking conditions. In conjunction with the cook-off, the lodge hosted a "Countywide Sale" inside the lodge hall with vendors selling merchandise ranging from household goods and antiques to seasonal gift items.

On the Friday night before the cook-off, cookers and members of the community enjoyed a night of karaoke fun and mouth-watering hamburgers in the lodge hall.

to Host 1997 National Polka Festival

Reports on Christmas Party and December Meeting The members of Lodge 25 held their Christmas party on December 8 at 2 p.m.

RVOS No. 51 co-hosted the party.

Dancing was provided by Cash Five Band playing some polkas and waltzes and beautiful Christmas music. The visit of Santa Claus bringing goodies for everyone was enjoyed by all.

Ed Mensik, president of RVOS, welcomed all to the annual Christmas party and gave the blessing before the meal, prepared by Linda Trojacek and her great crew. Thanks to all who brought canned goods for the needy in our community.

On Thursday, December 12, the meeting was called to order by Vice President Jim Holahan. The pledge was led by Johnnie I. Krajca. A moment of silent prayer for Weldon Elliott and Frank Poplawski was held.

The minutes were read by Secretary Pat Fowler. They were approved. Kay Kovar gave the financial report. She also reported on the youth club and said the next youth club meeting will be Sunday, February 9 at 2 p.m. The bar report was given by Kenneth Honza. FAC Margaret Krajca reported that the SPJST Scholarship Program will be accepting applications through December 31, 1996.

President Charlie Patak gave a Polka Festival report. Congratulations to Charlie and Janette on the birth of their granddaughter.

New members accepted were James A. Krajca and Grace M. Alston.

This year, the Sulak Brothers will be playing for the Nev, Year's Eve party starting at 8:30 p.m. So come out and have a good time on December 31.

The National Polka Festival held each year in Ennis, Texas, will have a new date for 1997. The Festival will be held May 30-June 1, 1997, beginning Friday night with the pre-festival party held at the SPJST lodge featuring the Czech sounds of The Harvesters. A large crowd is expected to attend this year's festival offering music from 12 different bands with a variety of styles. This year's festival will include the northern style of Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen from Iowa as well as 11 bands from throughout Texas.

The National Polka Festival in Ennis is traditionally one of the largest Czech festivals in the United States. It features a Saturday morning parade through downtown, street-dancing, costume contests, klobase-eating contests, arts and crafts, rides for the kids and of course, an assortment of Czech music, dancing and food at Ennis' four large, air-conditioned fraternal halls. Reports on December Meeting Dear Brothers and Sisters, The December meeting of Lodge 47 was opened by President Calvin Skrabanek on Sunday, December 1, 1996, at 2 p.m. Flag Bearers Jessica Kirby and Rebecca Greger brought in the flags and lead the pledge to the flag. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer to honor the memory of our dear departed members, Brothers Albert Wychopen and Henry Skala, Sr., who passed away recently. May they rest in eternal peace and deepest sympathy to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones.

Only one visitor attended this meeting and it was Freddie Schroeder. Please come again.

Joyce Skrabanek reported that get-well cards had been sent to those hospitalized members: Sisters Vlasta Hruska and Ruth Hanusch and Brothers Edward Mihatsch, Joyce Bartek, Adolph Vacha, and Keith Naivar. Also mentioned was Pauline Lorenz and I just found out that Brother Calvin Chlapek is hospitalized in Seton Hospital in Austin. I hope all of these are recovering satisfactorily and

Correspondence received included a "thank you" card from the Laddie Tommy Pavelka family for the wreath of flowers. Also received was a letter about the certification of the members who work the bar from the TABC. Edwin Vasicek, secretary of the trustees, read the board minutes of their November meeting.

President Skrabanek thanked all the chairpersons for their continuing cooperation this month plus the entire two years of his presidency and, also, to all the members who have helped in many ways.

First Vice President Edwin Pechal asked that the lodge continue to support the East Bell County Boosters that benefit many of the youngsters in FFA, FHA, and 4-H with projects in the Junior Youth and Livestock Fair. He also asked all who wished to be on a committee in 1997 to contact him so he and Edwin Vasicek, First Vice President for 1997, could complete committee appointments.

Ruth Hanusch, FAC, reminded us of the 100th Year Anniversary of the SPJST at the Bell County Expo Center on July 12 and 13, 1997; the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive; taroks at Granger; and the lodge's incentive gold award for the February 22 banquet in 1997.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek said that the annex improvements with the triple sink unit being installed will help when we wash dishes after the food preparations done in the building. Two heaters were also installed. Thanks to all who worked on these projects for two Saturdays.

Treasurer Lucy Mihatsch and Financial Secretary Gladys Marek both gave their reports and Lucy also presented the kitchen report. Other chairpersons gave their monthly reports.

Ginger Greger, Youth Leader, gave her report. Twenty-four members and six adults were present. She announced the practices for the Christmas program and the youth club party for parents and lodge officers.

Then we balloted for two trustees because Frank Klinkovsky decided not to serve and I, being a reporter, am a lodge officer for 1997 automatically. The new trustees are Edwin Marek and Edward Mares. I know they will be good trustees as well as helpers.

We also voted to announce the article change in two issues of the Vestnik.

Reports on Christmas Party Dear Brothers and Sisters, Looks as though Father Time has succeeded in being the winner of another year. Did you keep any resolutions you made during the infancy of 1996? I must admit that I am one who fell by the wayside quickly. Like many others, I will try again next year to do better.

Our Christmas Party was enjoyed by many of our members and friends. We had a feast of ham and cheese with many veggies, salads and desserts to partake of.

The highlight of the day—Lodge 84 could not let our lifetime member and District Three Director Brother Sid Pokladnik complete his tenure of years representing our lodge and others of District Three without wishing him well.

Brother Sid, to you and Justine, we know your love and interest for your Czech heritage and the SPJST organization have always been top priorities. Members have reaped the benefits of your long hours of work and travel. We wish your years to come will be as rewarding to you as the time you have given to members, associates and friends in the past. God's speed be with you. We will see you at the meetings.

Later in the evening, we were entertained by our youth and teen groups with a wonderful Christmas program. They are very important to our lodge and we are very proud of them and their involvement.

After the program, we had another guest.

You guessed it! Santa Claus appeared at the right moment for his annual visit.

Lodge 179, Warrenton Reports on Christmas Party The Warrenton Lodge Christmas party was held on December 12, 1996. Games were played and gifts were exchanged.

Ham was the main dish for the meal.

Falls County Reports on December Meeting Lodge 182, Falls County met on December 8 at 5 p.m. at the Lott Volunteer Fire Department building. The president called the meeting to order and gave the Pledge of Allegiance to the tlag.

We proceeded with the reading of the minutes from last meeting and the report of finances. Both were approved.

With the new business, we decided to make a donation to the Lott Volunteer Fire Department.

We decided that since this is maybe Superbowl Day, we will have sandwiches and chips and dips. We invite all members to come. We also invite guests.

With no other business, we adjourned to celebrate our Christmas supper. Our guests for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Rueben Ruiz and Mrs. Mary Romero and her two daughters, Amanda and Olivia.

Our Christmas supper consisting of turkey and dressing was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Komar, with all the other goodies, vegetables and desserts provided by the other members.

To the members and guests who were invited and did not come, you sure missed a very good meal and fellowship. There were door prizes and candy for the youth.

The Christmas tree and decorations were provided by the youth leader, Mrs. Treat.

The meeting was called, to order by President Elaine Duron at 1:30 p.m.

A moment of silent prayer was held in memory of Aldon Schiller and Johnnie Surovik.

The roll was called and all officers were present except the vice president.

Jenelle Zettel, the hall treasurer, gave her report. A memorial to the Scholarship Fund will be sent to the Home Office in memory of our members who passed away in 1996. Deceased members are Elsie Krause, Darwin Schovajsa, Edwin Janosky, Richard Assrnan, Lillie Korenek, Ella Mikeska, Eddie Richter, Leroy Gaskamp, Pete Etlinger, Adolph Tieman, Joe Raska, Aldon Schiller and Johnnie Surovik.

a short meeting and then adjourned for a Christmas party.

Sharka Jecminkova entertained us with her guitar, playing and singing Christmas carols in Czech. We really enjoyed them and thank Sharka for bringing this program to us. A great meal was served to us by Bessie Petr, consisting of roast beef and all the trimmings. Esther and Bob Cunningham furnished the punch, and Helen Oates made the punch.

The hall was decorated by Betty Stegall, Sydney Bridewell, Marie Kortous, Alice Roberts, Bertha Podhrasky, and Bill and Faye Wright.

The decorations were brought by these members, and the tables were beautiful with Santas and all things that mean Christmas.

All members brought envelopes of money in lieu of gifts and this was donated to the Southwestern Medical Center for the Doctors from the Czech Republic who are studying here. We were glad to see that Rose Kopecek, Ella Mae Faraizl, and others were able to attend. It is so good to see all these sisters at this time of the year.

We will not have a meeting in January, but we will have our regular meeting in February. Helen Koubek, Faye Wright, and Joyce Ehrenberger will be the host-

Sponsors Deer Antler Contest

The SPJST will again sponsor its annual Deer Antler Contest. Only SPJST members are eligible to participate in this contest. Two $50 prizes will be awarded.

One prize will be presented to the hunter whose deer has the widest horn spread (measured from the outside to outside of horns). The other prize will go to the deer with the most points (must be able to hang a ring on it to be qualified as a point).

To enter the contest, hunters must submit a photograph of the deer along with the contest entry form appearing of page three of the Vestnik. The form must be completed and signed by a game warden, highway patrolman, sheriff or public official.

This contest applies only to Texas white tail deer.

Your entry must be postmarked before January 31, 1997, to qualify.

The general white tail season will

begin on November 2 and will run through January 5. The South Texas season will run a week later, starting on November 9 and running through January 19.

According to game reports, the drought this summer had its effects on the deer population in some areas; however, the overall population is good. The deer that have been spotted appear to be in good shape—not as fat---but in good supply.

The generous supply of green grass and water in most areas will probably make it more difficult for the hunters.

As always, take care to observe safety rules when hunting. Best wishes to all hunters for a successful season.

A spaghetti supper will be served and all delegates are urged to attend so that plans can be made for the coming year.

Fort Worth Friendship Club Reports on December Meeting Dear Members and Friends, Our meeting was called to order by our president Jo Prochaska. She welcomed our guests, Helen Novak, Melba Brown, Frances Matthews, Martha Clifton, Janie Cepica, and 45 members.

The minutes and the treasurer's report were dismissed due to our Christmas party.

We were led to the pledge to our flag.

Donations were made to Father Sal, Father George, St. Thomas Church, Mollie Walker, and Joe Kozel for his accordion playing that is always enjoyed by all. We also donated food to the food bank.

Thanks were extended to Mr. and Mrs. Koren (Nettie Naugles' sister) for the donation of the roast pork.

We missed Louise Oujesky and hope she is better.

Our sympathy went out to Monte North on the loss of her daughter, Tommy Lee. Santa passed out the gifts and then a delicious lunch was enjoyed by all.

Happy Birthday went out to Agnes Reznicek, Lucille Kret, Joe Kozel, and Rose Romeo.

It was voted not to have a January meeting, counting on bad weather. So our next meeting will be the first Wednesday of February on February 5.

Our hostesses will be Libbie Vrla, Billye King, and Gertrude Dawson.

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for a happy and healthy new year.

Games and fellowship were enjoyed by all.

to the Czech Republic and Study Czech Travel

Travel to the Czech Republic and study Czech with people from all over the United States. The study tour will be from July 1 to July 25, 1997. The group leaders will be Thadious Polasek of Texas and Helen Briard of Prague, the Czech Republic.

Housing and food service will be at the dorms of the Agricultural School at Suchdol in the northern part of Praha.

Instruction will be by professors of the Charles University and a linguistic institute in Praha. Along with the classes, there will be cultural excursions in Prague: tours of the Prague Castle, picture galleries, the Old Town, and much more. There will also be out of town excursions to Jizni Cechy, Mikulcice, Babicino udoli, and Karlovy Var. You need not have studied Czech to be a member of the group. 133, San Antonio Member Emil Matula Remembers the Day That Lives in Infamy

It was 55 years ago on the morning of December 7, 1996, when Emil Matula fired his first shot in anger.

Months then passed before he and other U.S. servicemen who survived the Sunday morning sneak attack on Pearl Harbor and would know how heavy a price America paid on what now is known as the "date which will live in infamy."

Matula, who marked Pearl Harbor Day with other survivors of the attack on December 7 at Fort Sam Houston, carried an indelible mental image of one Japanese pilot who bombed and strafed Schofield Barracks, about 15 miles north of Pearl Harbor, in the first wave of the attack.

"He was laughing and shooting," Matula said, recalling the Rising Sun emblem on the low-flying pilot's headband during the split second of terror.

More than 300 carrier-based warplanes launched from a Japanese fleet about 275 miles to the north killed 2,403 Americans, wounded hundreds of others, sunk or damaged 19 U.S. ships and destroyed or damaged hundreds of U.S. planes during the attack on Pearl Harbor and other military installations on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.

Although U.S. military leaders had identified Pearl Harbor as vulnerable, the dawn attack was a total surprise to servicemen there.

Rumors that Washington intelligence officials suspected the attack but failed to warn commanders at Pearl have never been proven.

"It was a big, shock. We were always preached to that we had nothing to worry about," because of a strong military presence in waters west of Oahu, Matula said.

In San Antonio, Dwight Eisenhower, then a brigadier general, was resting from field maneuvers at Fort Sam Houston when he was notified a few hours after the attack and told to fly immediately to Washington.

Congress voted the next day to declare war on Japan after President Franklin Roosevelt's "Day of Infamy" speech.

The shock of the attack turned to anger as updates on casualties and damages from the bombing sifted into the jungle battlefield of the South Pacific.

"I didn't really know what had hap-

pened in Pearl Harbor until I was in Guadalcanal" six months later, Matula said. "After that, we had the attitude that we were paying them back for Pearl Harbor. That's what aroused Americans to come out and support the troops."

Fighting continued for more than three and one-half years in the Pacific until the Japanese surrender came a week after the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, 1945.

About 50 members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association gathered on December 7 at Fort Sam Houston invite South Texans to observe a moment of silence at 11:55 a.m.—the time here when the attack occurred 55 years ago—in honor of the 1,102 sailors known to have died aboard the USS Arizona, and more than 1,300 others who died in the attack.

Matula's account of the attack begins the night of December 6, 1941, when his infantry regiment defended its post football championship against another infantry regiment before a huge, enthusiastic crowd. Both teams were 12-0.

"At least 40,000 people were there.

That was the biggest deal at the time," said Matula, who played end.

Matula's regiment lost, 13-7. A large contingent of soldiers with 10-day passes went to Honolulu, where they "fought another football game in the streets" during a night of playful postgame revelry.

About 5 a.m. on December 7, 1941,

Matula and a friend took a taxi back to the post and slept briefly before they were awakened by the sound of exploding bombs and the wailing of earthquake sirens.

The first wave of Japanese planesMatula recalls about five swooping over his barracks—left at least 250 men killed or wounded at Schofield, he said.

The second wave arrived about 30 minutes later but moved too fast for him and others manning Army machine guns to shoot them down.

Matula remained at Schofield Barracks for several months after the attack and then fought in several battles in the South Pacific until he was wounded While serving in the Philippines in 1945.

He grew up in the Granger-Taylor area northeast of Austin, and left his family farm at age 18 with a seventhgrade education to enlist at Fort Sam Houston.

After heavy casualties forced him to assume command of his platoon in the Philippines, he received a battlefield commission as a second lieutenant.

His platoon had fought for three days trying to secure Lupao, a village in the Philippines, when he was hit in the face by enemy fire. He was discharged from active duty in 1945, and was in the Army Reserve for nine years before starting work as a salesman in San Antonio, a career that lasted many years.

Matula, 78, carries a flag he took from a dead Japanese soldier when he visits schools or Junior ROTC units.

But he said he was "in a daze for about six months" after returning from the war. After consulting his then-girlfriend and now wife of 51 years, he decided, like many World War II servicemen, to return to civilian life.

On Veteran's Day, November 11, Matula was elected commander of the Alamo Chapter of Battlefield Commissions, which has eight active members here and about 1,100 nationwide.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek, No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, PAUL C. BOETHEL, who passed away in the Lavaca Medical Center on Thursday, November 14, 1996, at 2:15 p.m. at the age of 92 years. He was born in Shiner on March 3, 1904, to German immigrant parents, Dr. N.C. and Anna Renger Boethel. In 1918, his father moved the family to Hallettsville, where he graduated from high school in 1921.

He was united in marriage to Frances Claire Christian in 1928. The couple had three children, one of whom died as an infant. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hallettsville.

Judge Paul C. Boethal was widely known as both a historian and artist. His 14 books on Lavaca County are a major reference source for both local historians and genealogists. He was a charter member and first president of the Hallettsville Golf Association organized in 1962. He was a 66-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a past Master of the local lodge. He was a founding member of the Lavaca County Historical Commission, honorary member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, and former member of the Southwest Texas Historical Association. He was a former member of the Hallettsville Lions Club of which he was a charter member and past president.

From 1966 to 1975, he served as a member of the Friench Simpson Memorial Library Board. For many years, he served on the Board of Directors of the Peoples State Band. He was a member of both the local VFW and American Legion.

From 1929 to 1937, Boethel served as superintendent of Hallettsville schools.

He was elected to the State Legislature in 1937 and represented District 23 for four years. In 1942, as chairman of the local draft board, Boethel signed his own induction papers. He served with the 30th Infantry and the 6th Armored Division during World War II and was awarded a Bronze Star. Upon his return, Boethel served as Lavaca County attorney from 1947 to 1954, district attorney from 1954 to 1960, and district judge from 1960 to 1971.

The body lay in state at Kubena Funeral Home until 9 a.m. Saturday, November 16 when it was taken to St. Peter Lutheran Church for 10 a.m. services. The Rev. Herb Beyer officiated.

Burial followed in the Hallettsville City Cemetery under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Frances Boethel; children, Carey and Martha, both of Austin; five grandchildren; brother Arthur Boethel of Hallettsville; and a sister, Helen Chapman of Houston.

Memorial services were held at 3 p.m.

October 24, 1996, at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel in Corpus Christi.

Brother Dlabaja was born at West, Texas, on April 12, 1933. The family moved to the Corpus Christi area in 1940.

He was a self-employed builder for 40 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, an SPJST member since June, 1974, and an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Josephine Kucera; and three brothers, Joe, Rudolph, and Anton Dlabaja.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Dlabaja; two daughters, Denice Dlabaja and Patricia Lee; six sons, Scott Dlabaja, Gary Dlabaja, and David Dlabaja, all of Corpus Christi, James Middleton of Spring, Texas, Robert Middleton of Midland, Texas, and William Middleton of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Millie Kral and Annie Pasderny of Corpus Christi; one brother, Victor Dlabaja of Corpus Christi; and 13 grandchildren.

DANA, who passed away on October 18, 1996, at the age of 71. He retired in 1989 from Roadway Express. He was a member of Teamsters Local 745, a charter member of RVOS, a member of SPJST Lodge 84, and the Dallas Brethren Church.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Ruby Dana of DeSoto, Texas; his son, Joe J. Dana, Jr. of Dallas; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Gary Rowland and Sandy and David Bundrick, all of DeSoto, Texas; grandchildren, Kathy Jo Dana, Colin and Emily Rowland; sister Ann Repka of DeSoto; and brother, Robert Dana of Temple.

Services were held on October 21, 1996, at David Clayton and Sons Funeral Chapel. Pastor Scott Davis officiated.

Interment was at Little Bethel Memorial Park in Duncanville.

Mr. Cook passed away November 22, 1996, in Tyler, Texas. Services were November 24 in Alto, Texas.

He was born February 5, 1956, in Rusk, Texas. He lived in Grapeland, Texas, after living in Houston, Texas, for several years. Mr. Cook served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion in Palestine, Texas. He was a very outgoing person.

Survivors are his wife, Nancy Cook of Grapeland; his daughter, Brenda "Daughter" Cook of Grapeland; his father and mother, Ray and Jacky Cook of Elkhart, Texas; two sisters, LuRay Taylor and her husband Lee Taylor of Palestine, Texas, and Kim Minter and her husband Randy Minter of Oakwood, Texas; father-in-law and mother-in-law Howard and Ruth Kieschnick of Houston; several nephews and nieces.

Expression of Sympathy On behalf of the entire membership of Lodge 25, Ennis, we wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the family of WELDON ELLIOTT. Graveside services for Weldon "Rooster" Elliott were held at 11 a.m.

Tuesday, December 3 in Myrtle Cemetery with the Rev. Johnny Mansell officiating under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.

Mr. Elliott, 80, died Friday, November 29, 1996, at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston due to injuries caused by an explosion and fire at his hunting lodge in Valverta County on November 2.

He was born January 14, 1916, in Ennis, the son of Roy P. and Myrtle Reasonover Elliott. He was reared in Ennis and attended Central High School.

On January 18, 1941, he was married to Stella Mae Swearengen of Midlothian.

After their marriage, they lived in Alma where he engaged in farming. In 1955, he was employed by the FCIC. In 1965, they moved to Rice. He retired in 1989 after 34 years as a claim adjuster in crop insurance. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rice, the 100F Lodge, the SOKOL, the SPJST, the Ellis County Bass Club where he was the 1995 club champion, and the Alma and Rice Volunteer Fire Departments. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and a big supporter of the Salvation Army.

He is survived by his wife of Rice; a son, Weldon R. Elliott, Jr. of Waxahachie; a daughter and her husband, Sharon and William Dillard of Ennis; two brothers and their wives, Wendell and Elizabeth Elliott and R.J. and Mattie Elliott, all of Ennis; a sister, Mrs. Maxwell Cates of Arlington; three grandchildren, Wade Dillard, Brandi Hawkins and Zachary Elliott; and three great-grandchildren, Dakota Dillard, Hunter Hawkins, and Olivia Hawkins.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tommie Holmes, in 1963.

Expression of Sympathy The members and officers of Lodge 25, Ennis express their deepest sympathy to the family of FRANK POPLAWSKI. Mr. Frank Poplawski, 83, died Tuesday morning, December 3, 1996, at his home outside of Ennis.

He was born June 21, 1913, in Adams, Massachusetts, the son of Alexander and Anna Smolinski Poplawski. He was reared in Adams where he attended school. After finishing school he helped on the family farm in the Adams area.

On May 16, 1938, he was married to Mary Krutiak of Adams. In 1949, he began his own business, Poplawski Aircraft Painting in Saginaw, Texas. In 1965, they moved to Cleburne. In 1969, they moved to Ennis where he continued his business. He retired in 1992. He has received several awards for his painting and experimental planes. He was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church, the Texas State Aviation Association, OX-5 Aviation Pioneers, Experimental Aircraft Association, and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of Ennis; a son and his wife, Francis J. and Mary 0.

Poplawski of Ennis; a daughter and her husband, Janet and Larry Backer of Meneloa; a sister, Izabele Brodalski of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Rosary-Vigil was recited at 7 p.m.

Youth Letters Section State King Enjoys Temple Christmas Parade On Monday, December 12, I met with the State Queen Karen Bender, her duchess Krystle Bender, and my duke Douglas Galler in the Temple Christmas Parade. We had a lot of fun riding in the carriage. It got cold, but the smiling faces made it worth it.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 9 Youth Club had their monthly meeting on Sunday, December 1 at 2 p.m. We decorated the hall and Christmas tree for our Christmas program which was that night at 6 p.m.

Our charities for December are to bring $1 per member for American Heart Association. We donated $50 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund and we donated $150 to St. Claire Monestary.

The club went ice skating on Saturday, December 7 and we went Christmas caroling around the Snook community on Sunday, December 8. That was really fun.

Our next meeting is January 8 at the Snook Fire Station.

She put heart and soul into the youth club and it showed. Our membership increased dramatically while she held this position. The children and the parents of Lodge 24 Youth Club will miss her, but we know that our lives have been blessed to have known and experienced her vitality. Ethnic Identity Among the Czechs and Moravians of Texas

The

significance of the Texas experience in the formation of ethnic identity among Czechs and Moravians has been previously demonstrated. By the beginning of the twentieth century, Czechs and Moravians in Texas had adopted certain of the attitudes of the dominant AngloAmerican population, including selfreliance, ethnocentrism, and a certain chauvinism directed against non-Texans.

Generally, the Czechs and Moravians through their hard work and thriftiness earned the respect of their neighbors, a factor which reinforced their feelings of ethnic pride.

The Czechs and Moravians in Texas were conscious of the differences that distinguished themselves from their kinsmen in other states. Although most of the immigrants were sympathetic towards the Union cause during the Civil War, some in Texas served in the Confederate Army.

In later decades, due in large part to the leadership of Judge Haidu gek, most became supporters of the Democratic party. As Haidu gek and others often pointed out, the political interests of the Texas Czechs and Moravians did no; always coincide with those of their kinsmen in the Midwest and the North.

In the 1870s the Texas immigrants established local fraternal societies which were affiliated with national Czech organizations, but during the following two

decades they served these ties. Claiming that the rates charged to the Texas members were discriminatory, they established their own Texas-based fraternal organizations, which still exist today. Although close ties linked settlements scattered from Houston and Corpus Christi to Wichita Falls and Dallas, the Texas community remained isolated from other Czechs and Moravians, even those in the neighboring states of Louisiana and Oklahoma.

By the early decades of the twentieth century their concept of identity was influenced more by developments occurring within their Texas community than by those in the "old country." The institution of a Czech language course at the University of Texas at Austin in 1915 did much to stimulate ethnic pride. The Czechs and Moravians who participated in the celebration of the centennial of Texas statehood in 1936 simultaneously celebrated their European heritage and their accomplishments in Texas, both of which have contributed towards the formation of the modern concept of ethnic identity. Such celebrations of ethnicity reinforced the concept of a common Czech ethnic identity shared by Czechs and Moravians.
