An Innovative Approach Under the direction of Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard. Mikeska, the Insurance Department is working to develop new strategies to address product marketing and sales. On November 8, sales representatives from all over the state attended a one-day workshop at the SPJST Home Office designed to provide information on SPJST's new Payroll Deduction Sales Program. A complete summary of this program which was moderated by State Field Representatives Keith Gatewood and Jim Wiest will be forthcoming in the Vestnik.

In this week's mail, there arrived several notices for annual local lodge Christmas parties. Those dates are listed in the Family fun and Important SPJST Dates calendar at the bottom of this column. If your local lodge is planning a special holiday celebration, by all means take advantage of the Vestnik to spread the word. Also, please note that on an annual basis, the Home Office will provide every local lodge with a complimentary mailing to all lodge members. This includes the production of a simple letter or flyer and the expense for mailing. Please allow at least two weeks lead time with your request. For more information on this service, please contact the office of Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar.

In many cases, the annual lodge Christmas party is the one time a year that some lodge members get involved in lodge activities. Taking that into consideration, make the most of the event.

The world has changed considerably since the SPJST was founded in 1897.

With approximately 1,800 life insurance providers in business today, the availability of insurance is no longer the issue it once was. What is an issue; however, is the continued ability of our lodge system to attract new members and serve as an effective centerpiece in our fraternal society.

CEFT Expresses Thanks for SPJST Support Dear Mr. Leshikar: On behalf of all the officers and members of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, I want to express our thanks for the SPJST's continuing support. Your assistance in the recent mailing of brochures describing the projected CEFT Czech Fellowship at Texas A&M University is only the latest example of that support.

Through the years, financial contributions made by your organization, as well as by individual lodges and of course individual members, have been instrumental in the success of our projects. As you know, the Texas Chair in Czech Studies is the only one of its kind in the U.S., and your organization played a large part in making it a reality in 1993.

Lodge 9, Snook Annual Christmas Party . Scheduled Please note that Lodge 9, Snook's Annual Christmas Party will be Sunday, December 1, 1996 at the Snook SPJST Hall. Activities get underway at 2 p.m. with the Youth Club Meeting, during which time the young people will make decorations for the Christmas tree and practice for the Christmas program.

The Adult Annual Meeting begins at 4 p.m. and will include the installation of our 1996 - 1997 lodge officers. A covered dish supper will be served at 5:15 p.m., followed by the Youth Club's Christmas Program at 6 p.m. Santa is expected to make his appearance at 6:30 p.m.!

25, Ennis Reports on October Meeting Lodge

Lodge 25 met for their regular meeting on Thursday, October 11, 1996 with President Charlie Patak presiding. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Johnnie I. Krajca. A momen t of silence followed for our departed members, Sophy Holy and Sybil Harrison.

The SPJST will again sponsor its annual Deer Antler Contest. Only SPJST members are eligible to participate in this contest. Two S50 prizes will be awarded.

One prize will he presented to the hunter whose deer has the widest horn spread (measured from the outside to outside of horns). The other prize will go to the deer with the most points (must be able to hang a ring on it to be qualified as a point).

To enter the contest, hunters must submit a photograph of the deer along with the contest entry form appearing of page three of the Vestnik. The form must be completed and signed by a game warden, highway patrolman, sheriff or public official.

This contest applies only to Texas white tail deer.

Your entry must be postmarked before January 31, 1997, to qualify.

begin on November 2 and will run through January 5. The South Texas season will run a week later, starting on November 9 and running through January 19.

According to game reports, the drought this summer had its effects on the deer population in some areas; however, the overall population is good. The deer that have been spotted appear to be in good shape—not as fat—but in good supply.

The generous supply of green grass and water in most areas will probably make it more difficult for the hunters.

As always, take care to observe safety rules when hunting. Best wishes to all hunters for a successful season.

Secretary Patricia Fowler read the minutes of the September meeting.

Margaret Krajca gave the Fraternal Activities Coordinator report and Kay Kovar gave the Treasurer's report and the Youth Leader's report. All were approved as presented.

Janet Patak, who was President of the Polka Festival, reported that plans are well on their way for a very successful 1997 festival which will be held on Friday, May 30th, Saturday, May 31st, and Sunday, June 1st.

The lodge Christmas Party will he on Sunday, December 8th. This will he a party for all RVOS No. 51 and Lodge No. 25 members. (Watch the Vestnik for more information.)

The membership selected Kay Kovar as "Fraternalist of the Year."

Congratulations to our lodge Treasurer and Youth Leader. Good luck, Kay; and we hope that you win the State Fraternalist of the Year award!

40, El Campo - Hillje Reports on Lodge Meeting Lodge

El Campo - Hillje Lodge 40 held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 16, 1996 at 7 p.m. Vice President Bennie Reck presided and led the pledge to the flag followed by a moment of silent prayer for our ill and deceased members.

Ardis Bacak read the minutes. They were approved as read.

Madeline Shimek was nominated as Fraternalist of the year by Leona Macha.

The nomination was seconded by Loraine Kana. Congratulations, Madeline!

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Dora Lee Kopecky reported on collecting pennies for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. She then reported on the SPJST's 100th Anniversary Celebration set for Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13, 1997 in Belton, Texas. She also talked about our District Six meeting and about the November 20th meeting at Country Pride Restaurant. She commented that cold cuts would he served with a large cake for dessert. The November meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Youth Leader Charlene Borak reported that the Youth Club had three new members. They are Joseph, Christene and Teresa Kocurek. Mrs. Borak reported that the Youth Club will entertain at the District Six Fall Meeting on November 3rd in Victoria, Texas.

A Nominating Committee was chosen at our October meeting. The election of officers will he held at our November 20th meeting at Country Pride Restaurant.

Gene Valigura made a motion with a second by Leona Macha not to have bingo on Monday ni ght, November llth in observance of Veterans' Day. The meeting was adjourned.

The door prize was won by Dolores Valigura.

48, Beyersville to Host Progressive 42 Tournament This Saturday

Lodge

SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a Progressive 42 Tournament on Saturday, November 16, 1996. The registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and we plan to begin playing at 9:15 a.m.

Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes per game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially invite SPJST members but anyone is welcome. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round. The two winners will move to the next table and split up and play with the losers who remain at that table. There will he no head table thus all winners will move.

We will use the same rules that the State SPJST uses except for some changes which apply for Progressive 42.

Also, we ask that as many persons as possible please pre-register so we can plan the food needs. But it is not a must to pre-register.

81, Needville Reports on October Meeting

Our October meeting was held on Sunday, October 20, 1996 at the lodge hall in Needville. Early arrivers enjoyed coffee and good fellowship. At 12 noon, a meal of meatloaf and sausage, along with all of the other side dishes that were brought, was served. President Macha led us in grace before the meal. Thanks to Sister Benita Walzel and Willie Mae Kuykendall for preparing the delicious meatloaf and to all of the other ladies who brought the other tasty vegetables, salads, and desserts. The ladies who always get everything done in the kitchen before and after we eat deserve a big thank you also.

Before I start my column, there are two corrections to he made that appeared in my last article in the Vestnik. This is the second time a correction is being made on this item — Bradley Vallet is the son of Corliss and Gilbert Vallet and the other correction was a name on the sic', list. The name read "Leona Macha," but should have been Leona Mahler. Sorry about the errors, but I do have this correct in my copy of the article that was sent in.

were all present. Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the previous meeting which were accepted as read. Our treasurer, Willie Mae Kuykendall, presented her monthly financial report which was accepted as read. Gilbert Walzel, our special fund chairman, gave his report covering the income and expenses of the previous month. He then gave the schedule of events for the hall for the upcoming month. There was one cancellation for the previous month and the Bradley Vailet benefit was moved to the KC Hall due to the rainy weather that weekend.

President Macha again informed us that we need to have our thinking caps on. In the month of November, it is time for the election of officers. Mary Werner is relinquishing her position as secretary and financial secretary. Vlasta Nowotny, our historian, has moved to Florida to be with her daughter and son-in-law. We will also need someone to replace Mary Werner as head of the Kitchen Committee. The position as reporter is now considered to be an officer. This was decided at the last convention.

In the correspondence department, Mary Werner read a thank you note from the Victor Werner Family. Mary, you did good. Continue to hold your chin up.

Death took another one of our members this past month. Our departed sister is Emma Emily Barcak of Rosenberg. A moment of silence was observed in her memory. May she rest in peace.

Sympathy is extended to her family.

The following people are on the sick list: Bradley Vallet, Jerry Blinka,

Mildred Vecera, LaVerne Davis, Emil Pollock, Leona Mahler, Willie (Bill) Miller, Harry Teykl, Annie Horelica and Ludwig Surovec. Get well wishes are sent to each of you and to all others who are ill.

Discussion was brought up about the type of Memorial Fund card we are using. It was decided that no amount of money should appear — just the donor's name. Vincent Newman will take care of the reprinting of the new cards.

The drain pans under the air conditioners need replacing in the hall. There was discussion on this. Vincent Newman is to take care of this problem for the lodge.

Brother Gilbert Walzel informed us that the old barbecue pit no longer exists.

He knocked it down with his tractor.

Edwin Susan and President Macha loaded the remains of the pit to be disposed of. Thanks, guys, for a job well done. President Macha will again get in contact with Charles Altimore to get the other pit in working condition. Thanks, also, to Gilbert Walzel for making a drum in which to burn the wood.

Gilbert Walzel thanked everyone for the support of his grandson's benefit. It went extremely well. Bradley is improving every day — thanks to all of the prayers offered and to the wonderful doctors and nurses.

For our October meeting, we had thirty-one members and guest present. There were two new faces at the meeting. They were Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Vrana, Sr. of Beasley. Rudy is a member of Lodge 81.

The guest was his wife, Helen. We were delighted to have both of you present.

Our four monetary winners for this time were Laura Abschneider, Rudy Vrana, Sr., Alvin Blinka, and Adolph Macha. This money is provided by the lodge.

President Macha and wife, Delores, provided the group with a Halloween candy guessing game. The number of candies in the container was 194. Rudy Vrana, Sr. guessed 190. He was the lucky winner. Hope everyone remembered to go trick-or-treating at Rudy's house.

Congratulations are in order to one of our members who got married recently.

Our daughter, Sheryl, was married to Todd Norman on Saturday, October 5 in St. Michael's Church in Needville. On behalf of Lodge 81, best wishes for a happy and long marriage filled with much love are being sent to the newlyweds.

A note of thanks to Miranda Wiles for helping Adolph and I get everything ready for the meeting. This was very sweet of you.

There are some farmers in this area who still have cotton in the fields at this time. The majority of the fields are worked up and are looking good.

Needless to say, the farmers did not have a good year. Better luck next year.

We hope everyone had a safe and funfilled Halloween. Now it is time to focus on Thanksgiving. It is just a few weeks away. Lodge 81 wishes everyone a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving. Each of us has so much to be thankful for. There are so many that are less fortunate than we are.

Our next meeting date is Sunday, November 17, 1996 at the lodge hall in Needville. Remember this is a very important meeting — the election of officers for the new year. On the menu there will be turkey and dressing. Elsie Brdecka, Winnie Susan, and Benita Walzel will hake the turkeys. Willie Mae Kuykendall will make the dressing.

Ladies, just as usual, please bring a vegetable or salad and dessert. Please mark your calendars now, so you won't forget.

Lodge 84, Dallas Sets November and December Activities Dear Members, On November 16, the Vrazels play for your dancing. On that same night, our kitchen is serving chili and beans, klobase sandwiches and hamburgers to benefit the Living Memorial Fund. The admission to the dance is $6 for adults, and teens (ages 17 and under) are admitted free of charge.

The kitchen committee's prices are chili and beans for $3 per bowl (including crackers), and the usual price for hamburgers and klobase stands. The serving begins at 6:30 p.m. Pastry would be appreciated. Please come and support this benefit which the kitchen committee is working and asks for your support.

December 15 is our Christmas party with a social hour from 4 to 5 p.m., dinner at 5 p.m., and a program following.

Then, Santa makes his appearance. The lodge will furnish the ham and cold cuts, cheese, bread and coffee. Plan to come.

You are asked to bring a covered dish and dessert. Also, remember the needy and bring canned goods to be given to a group on Monday following our party.

Then, it's the New Year's Eve Dance.

The great music of the Vrazel Band will once again keep you on the dance floor from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Reserve tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for teens (ages 13 to 17). At the door that night, tickets are $12 for adults and $4 for teens (ages 13 to 17). Bring your friends and relatives for a fun night.

You still have time to get a group together for the December 7 Czech Harvesters dance. It will be a happy crowd and you will want to he among them.

Details on the chili supper include the hall doors opening at 7 p.m. Chili will be served all evening at $3.25 per bowl; with beans, $3; hamburgers are $2.25; cheeseburgers are $2.50; and klobase are $2.25. All proceeds from the chili supper will go to the Living Memorial Fund.

This fund has already proved to be a success and benefit to our lodge so do come and support the chili supper.

November 16 will be a double header!

The Vrazel Polka Band will be playing. So after eating you can enjoy the music for the evening. The dance will start at 8:30 p.m. and the tickets will be the usual charge of $6 per adult and $3 for teens ages 17 and under. Bring your family and friends.

Come early and eat. Then you will be ready to enjoy the music and dance. Don't forget the date November 16.

I haven't mentioned the Kroger Cards lately. If you aren't using them or don't have one, please write or call Evelyn Salac at 352-5235 or me at 381-1703 and we will give you full details.

Our next dance will be December 7.

You will be entertained with the music played by the Czech Harvesters. Take time out from the holiday shopping, etc. and have an enjoyable evening at Lodge 84.

We are asking our members to bring boxed or canned foods to be given to charities for the holidays. If you would like to bring them earlier to one of our functions that will be fine or if you prefer to wait until the Christmas party that will be great. We appreciate your support.

Lodge 84, Dallas Reports on Coming Events Dear Members and Friends, Just wanted to let everyone know what we have planned for the rest of 1996.

Please come and enjoy the activities.

November 16th dance music will he by the Vrazels. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Our Living/Memorial Fund will receive all the proceeds from the kitchen that night. We have a Benefit Drive once. a year and this is it. It's very important

for Lodge 84 to have this separate fund for emergency only. In five years, we have drawn from the fund only twice and this was for roof repairs. We will serve chili, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, Rudolph's klobase sandwiches and pastry. We are asking for donations of pastry and money as well. Please he generous.

Our Christmas Party will start at 4 p.m. on December 15th. This will be a very fun event. Make plans to come.

The lodge will furnish ham, cheese, bread and coffee. The members are asked to bring a side dish and a pastry for dessert.

As usual, we always collect canned goods for the needy. Also, free keg beer and cold drinks will be offered during the social hour. Can't beat that.

The December 7th dance will feature the Harvesters Band. The lodge will be decorated for Christmas. Oh yes, we decorate on Sunday, December 1st, starting at 3 p.m. Come help us and bring a covered dish item to eat after we finish.

On December 12th at 7 p.m., the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council Christmas Party will be held at Lodge 84. All of our members are invited. Just bring a pastry for dessert.

December 31st will be our New Year's Eve Dance. The Vrazels will be playing that wonderful music from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Make your reservations early and buy your tickets for the best seating. 88, Houston Reports on Lodge Activities

Our Czech Day celebration was really great. Johnny Broz and Edna Wehring, working together, did a good job. Flo and Calvin Orsag had the pastry for the Birthday Sisters and our Choral Club sang beautifully. It was nice to see so many people come enjoy the day, visit and dance and just really have a good time.

We would also like to report on our proud new grandparents: Nat and Barbara Gonzales. Allison MarieWockinfuss was born on October 10th to Michelle and Jerry Wockenfuss. She weighed 8-pounds, 14-ounces. Grandma and Grandpa have been showing her off at the lodge. She is a real cutie.

Tickets are now on sale for our New Year's Eve Dance. John Sullivan will be playing.

Lillie Spies had a car accident. We missed her at Czech Day but she is doing better. Julia Kinninman has been ill and Bessie Lero broke her arm.

We also have some sad news to report. One of our members, Franklin Bravenec, 81, passed away. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Almedia Elaine. Franklin was retired from Mosher Steel Company after 39 years of loyal service. He was a member of the Men's Club here at Lodge 88 and was very active in his church, St. Mark's United Methodist Church. He will he missed very much by us all.

Let me tell you. Time is a very precious gift of God: so precious that it's only given to us moment by moment.

Each morning when you awake, it is a blessing.

President Keith Kieschnick called our meeting to order at 2 p.m. on October 13, 1996. Thirty-five members and five guests were present. All stood to recite the pledge to our tlag. The minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved as read.

There were no new members for the month. We were sorry to report that Sister Adela Stein was on the sick list.

Rita and Henry Hermis donated eight additional door prizes for the members registered at our meeting. Many thanks to Rita and Henry.

Under correspondence, President Kieschnick read a letter regarding our 50year members. Congratulations to Charlie Chupik and William C. Machacek.

All officers reports were given.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2, Needville Reports on Recent Activities Eddie Kovar and Jestine Miller, who arrived in October, are the newest residents to join us at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville.

We regret the deaths of Fabin Ybarra, Vilas Muirbeid, Willa Wilkerson and Dorothy Newman. They will be missed by our staff and residents.

Every Tuesday morning, Frank Ramos came to conduct Bible Study. In the afternoon, Annie Stavinoha, Ida Gasch, Toni Kramer and Nora Prihoda came to help with the bingo.

Every Thursday morning, Father Ramsey, Milton Legendre, Rosie Kovar and Annie Stavinoha with St. Michael's Catholic Church came to have Mass. In the afternoon, the Damon Presbyterian, Catholic, Methodist and Immanuel ladies took turns assisting with the crafts.

Every Friday afternoon, Mildred Novak came to help roll hair.

Every Sunday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar came to say rosary.

On Wednesday morning, October 23, the residents enjoyed church services.

Birthday greetings in October were extended to Otillie Jurchak, who celebrated her 100th birthday. Staff members with birthdays included: Grace Loesch, Pam McMullen, Sue Moore and Tara Jablonski.

The Birthday Party that was held on Friday, October 25, featured Louis Vacek entertaining on the accordian and piano.

"A Flower and Gift Shop" provided the corsages. Prime Care EMS provided a beautiful cake for the party along with the Immanuel Church Volunteers Nora Mesecke, Nelrose Zwahr and Nelda Rosenbaum serving cake, punch, ice cream and coffee to all. The afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.

On Wednesday morning, October 30, Lisa Gaul came to have church services.

On Thursday afternoon, October 31, the residents enjoyed the Halloween party. The following residents were judged as winners in the costume contest: First — Tonnie Dannhaus; Second Daniella Peschel; Third - Eileen Spezia; Fourth - Eddie Istre; and Fifth - Thomas Kamas.

The residents enjoyed all of the activities during the month of October.

Thanks to all denominations of churches and to all of the volunteers who perform services in the home for the residents.

of Moravia to be Featured in Houston

Carols

St. Christopher Parish, located at 8150 Park Place in Houston, Texas, will host an Advent Concert of the great hymns and carols of Moravia (the eastern region of the Czech Republic) on Thursday, December 5, 1996, the Eve of St. Nicholas, at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The candlelight concert will be sung by an eight-member ensemble named Veselanka (from Vesela, Moravia, in the Czech Republic). It will include the lighting of the Advent Wreath, some hymns to be sung all together, and the traditional skit for children "The Visit of St. Nicholas."

A free-will offering will be accepted, and those attending are asked to bring some canned food for the hungry. At the reception following the concert, Veselanka will sing Czech and Moravian folksongs. More information about the concert may be obtained by calling St. Christopher parish office (713-645-6614).

Veselanka will sing in other places in Houston and in Texas, and for more information about those performances, you may call Raymond David in East Bernard at (409) 335-4790.

Containing 267 pages, this volume is filled with photos, historical data and special stories about early pioneer days and parish life in East Bernard beginning in the late 1890s and early 1900s.

An interesting feature of this volume is a section which includes a descriptive narrative of life as it was in Czechoslovakia, the immigration to America and the hardships endured in the new land. These rare narratives, composed by parishioners, were originally written in the Czech language and were translated for inclusion in the book.

Also included is a detailed history of Holy Cross School from its beginning in 1922 of school classes. The book also features a history of all known parish organizations, biographies of all past clergy and native vocations and a number of pioneer families.

The idea of a history book of the parish was conceived in early 1994. A committee of parishioners was formed consisting of Alphonse Vacek, Sylvia Preisler and Yvonne Krenek with Martha Viktorin serving as Chairman and author.

Photos and historical data began to be compiled and assimilated into book from. The result is an interesting volume valuable for research and genealogy purposes because of its biographical and pioneer family data. A convenient surname index of approximately 2,500 names, many of which are cross-indexed with maiden and married names, enables readers to locate possible ancestors.

Editor of the book is Jacqueline Srouji who serves the Diocese of Victoria, Texas, as Director of Communications and Editor of the award-winning Catholic Lighthouse newspaper.

Memoriam Expression of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Pokrok Dallas, No. 84, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, FRANK B. STEINER, JR., who passed away on November 1, 1996 at the age of 75. He graduated from North Dallas High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed by Standard Container Corp. of Dallas. Brother Steiner was a lifetime member of SPJST Lodge No. 84.

Survivors include a son, Stephen K Steiner, a daughter-in-law, Shelley Steiner, granddaughter, Amber-Leigh Steiner, all of Houston; stepdaughter, Beverly Schwabb; and step-granddaughter, Amy Schwabb of Dallas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank B. Steiner, Sr. and Frances Malik Steiner; his wife, Janet Steiner; and sister, Annie Steiner.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, November 14th at 3 p.m. at SPJST Lodge No. 84, 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas. Mr. Steiner donated his body to medical science -the Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

Memory of Hamlin A. Susan In

Hamlin A. (H.A.) Susan, 86, of Taylor, passed away Friday, October 18, 1996, in Taylor, Texas. Born on January 31, 1910, in Temple, Mr. Susan, a farmer, had lived in Taylor all of his life. He was a member of Taylor Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor, an, insurance adjuster for RVOS, and trustee for Tyler and Polanka Schools.

Survivors include daughters, Ruth Ann Wuensche and husband, Bobby, and Ruby Roznovak, all of Taylor, Alice Wuensche and husband, Charles, of Thrall, Joyce Avalos and husband, Edward, of Thorndale, and Betty Jane Zimmerhanzel and husband, Dan, of Paige; son Johnny T. Susan and wife, Juanette, of Rices Crossing; 28 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Pokorny Susan on March 6, 1996, his mother, Frances Susan; sister Olga Pokorny; nephew John Lee Pokorny; grandson Lawrence Zimmerhanzel; great-grandson David Dean Roznovak, Jr.; and son-in-law Alvin Roznovak.

Prayer service was held at the Taylor Brethren Church. Funeral services were held Monday, October 21, 1996, at the Taylor Brethren Church with Rev. James Hejl officiating. Interment followed in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Joey Susan, Robert Sanders, Andy Wuensche, Marc Clearman, Karl Wuensche, and John Walton. Grandsons served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Taylor Brethren Church or the charity of one's choice.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge sister, BILLIE MARIE JAN EWAY, who died Sunday, October 20, 1996 in a Temple Hospital. Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park.

Mrs. Janeway was born in Sparks to Robert Lee and Willie E. Cobb Swan.

She attended Temple Junior College, Baylor University, and the University of Texas at Austin. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star 153. She was an avid golfer, having been a member of the Old Temple Country Club since the early 1960s and was the Golf Champion for 10 years.

A longtime member of First Baptist Church in Temple, she was a member of the Naomi Sunday School Class, the Joy Singers, the L.L.L. Club of the church as well as primary Sunday school teacher.

She was also a member of the 42 Domino Club since the early 1950s.

Survivors are her husband, Collins Janeway of Temple; one son, Keith S. Janeway of Temple; one brother, Robert E. Swan of Moffat; and three grandchildren.

The family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church in Temple.

Services for Dalphina Krahulik, 79, of Temple were at 2 p.m. Friday, October 25, 1996, at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple with the Rev. John Bravenec officiating.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Mrs. Krahulik died Wednesday, October 23 at her residence.

Mrs. Krahulik was born in Seaton to Paul and Albina Motl Sefcik. She was a lifelong resident of Bell County and a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Prior to her retirement due to ill health, she was employed by Wood's Factory.

Survivors are her husband, Joe Krahulik of Temple; two brothers, Frank Sefcik and Vaclav Sefcik, both of Temple; and one sister, Matilda Sefcik of Temple.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 106, LaGrange, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, HENRY JERRY SCHOVAJSA of LaGrange, who passed away October 21 in Fayette Memorial Hospital in LaGrange. He was 72 years of age.

Services were held Wednesday, October 23, 1996, at 10:30 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church in LaGrange with Rev. W. Patterson Lyles officiating.

Interment was in the LaGrange City Cemetery.

Born in Bell County, Texas, on April 12, 1924, he was the son of Emil H. and Albina (Janicek) Schovajsa. He was an attorney and served as Fayette County Judge from 1950 to 1965.

He was a former president of Cecho Moravan No. 106 many years.

He married the former Ruth Horak on August 10, 1946, in West, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth of LaGrange; daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Gene Oeding of LaGrange; son and daughter-in-law, William H. and Deborah Schovajsa of LaGrange; brother and sister-in-law Ed and Rita Schovajsa of Belton; sister-in-law, Dorothy Schovajsa of Inez; and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Benjamin Schovajsa of LaGrange.

Expression of Sympathy The members of Lodge 180, Burleson wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of RANDALL GENE "RANDY" PAYNE. Randy, 40, was a meat cutter for 18 years at a Winn-Dixie store. He died in a Fort Worth hospital as a result of injuries received in,a fall at his home on October 6.

The funeral was at St. Matthew Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the burial at Prairie Springs Cemetery.

Randy was dearly loved by his family, friends and community and was a faithful member of Lodge 180, Burleson. He attended Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Randall Gene "Randy" Payne was born on May 26, 1956 in Fort Worth and was a life-long resident of Burleson. He was a graduate of Tarleton State University with a bachelor's degree in industrial technology. As a student at college, Randy was named to "Who's Who" and a member of the Alpha Chi fraternity.

He was an official with the Southwest Football Association and taught construction graphics and computer maintenance technology at Burleson High School.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Garland Gene Payne, Sr. on March 18, 1991; and Clara Payne on January 17, 1991.

Loving Memory of Agnes Lamza Hosek In

Mrs. Agnes Lamza Hosek passed away on Saturday, September 21, 1996 at her residence in Floresville at the age of 100 years, 4 months and 8 days.

She was born on May 13, 1896 in Moulton, Texas in Lavaca County to Paul Lamza and Anna Kocian Lamza. She was one of 7 children and was the last surviving member of the family.

On February 21, 1916 she married August Hosek, Sr., in the Catholic Church in Weid, Texas. They moved to their farm in the Three Oaks Community in Wilson County where they raised their family. She often talked of the severe drought that began in 1916. She recalled a neighbor who planted cotton in March of 1916 and the cotton did not come up until November. In 1918, it rained some and then in 1919, the rains came along with the devastating storm in Corpus Christi. There were no crops produced during these years. Through it all, the bills somehow were paid and the family fed. After the death of her husband in 1955 and son in 1957, she moved to the Sunnyside Community near her daughter and son-in-law, Albina and Jerome Flieller where she resided until her death.

For the past 25 years, the family celebrated her birthday with the 100th birthday being the highlight this past May. She thoroughly enjoyed her party, visiting with family and friends and even enjoyed a special birthday waltz with her son, Victor.

Rosary was recited at Vinyard Funeral Home in Floresville at 7:30 p.m. on September 23 with Rev. Thomas O'Brien officiating.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. on September 24 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville with Father Victor Carriollo officiating, assist-

ed by Msgr. Lawrence Stuebberi. Alter servers were great-grandchildren Jamie Lynn Aktines, James Scott Kotowski and G.J. Aktines. Readings were also by great-grandchildren Kelly Albina Aktines, Brian Joseph Kotowski and James Scott Kotowski. As a special family request, "On This Day of Beautiful Mother" was sung by Dodie Garcia accompanied by Dora Rodriguez.

Assisting with other selections were Victor Jack Hosek, Peter Kane and Richard Chavez. At the offertory, her great-grandchildren each brought up a single rose.

Pallbearers included grandsons John Jerome Flieller, Victor Jack Hosek, Maj. James B. Kotowski, James E. Aktines, Dr. Eric C. Kiang and Allen Hosek.

Interment followed in Blessed Sacrament Cemetery in Poth, Texas.

She is survived by daughters: Georgia (Dan) Cullinane, Albina (Jerome) Flieller, Martha Luckie, Leona (Stanley) Moczygemba and Ella Plyler; sons: August (Lila) Hosek and Victor (Ivarene) Hosek; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 1 step-grandchild and a special "adopted" grandson, Chris Flieller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, August; stepdaughter, Rose Fischer, who she raised as her own; daughters: Annie Schmidt and Agnes Sims; sons: Leon and Johnny Hosek; grandson, Michael Hosek; step-grandson, Emil Fischer and two step-great-grandchildren, Marsha and Debbie Fischer.

Sister Hosek was a special lady — not only was she a wonderful Mom, she was a "best friend" — a wonderful Grandma and an extra special great-grandmother, or "GG," as she was called. She was interested in all her family and everything around her. She loved to go places. Thanksgiving of last year, she along with Jerome and Albina, flew to California to visit her grandchildren, Donna and Jim Kotowski and their family and had a great time. She loved her garden and had already instructed her sons-in-law, Jerome and Dan and daughter, Georgie, just what needed to be planted. She fully intended to supervise this project. She loved her church and attended Mass until shortly before her death. She will be greatly missed.

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart School where a special memorial fund has been established in her memory.

Arrangements were under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home of Floresville.

Agnes was a member of SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville for 57 years.

13, Dime Box Youth Club Reports on October Meeting Lodge

Lodge 13, Dime Box Youth Club had their monthly meeting on October 20, 1996. Lamanda called the meeting to order. Kerri led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll was called by Dee and she read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved. Our treasurer Nicholas gave his report which was approved.

We talked about the t-shirt design contest and about the state volleyball tournament at Bruceville-Eddy High School Gym on November 16 at 9:30 a.m.

Our next meeting will be November 17 at 5:30 p.m. Don't forget to bring a canned good to the meeting.

24, Cyclone Youth Club Hosts Halloween Carnival Lodge

Dear Readers, An old-fashioned Halloween Carnival was held on Sunday, October 27 at Lodge 24, Cyclone. It was a fun day for everyone. Thanks to our parents who helped set up and work in the game booths, kitchen and selling tickets, and to our youth members who participated.

We had two haunted houses this year and they were enjoyed by everyone who wanted a good scare. We appreciated the Cooksey family's time in getting these houses together. Our costume contest featured many scary characters and prizes were given to the scariest and most creative costumes. An afternoon meal of chili cheese dogs and french fries were served. Thanks to the Ernst family for their hard work in preparing this delicious meal.

Finally, I want to thank our devoted youth leaders, Melanie and David, for getting together another fun and enjoyable carnival. Everyone had a great time.

Dear Youth Club Members and Readers, Our monthly meeting was held on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:05 p.m. when President Holly Hubbard called the meeting to order.

We discussed Czech Day at Lodge 88 on Sunday, October 27. We all brought our three two-liter bottles of soft drinks to the meeting. These are for the ring toss game. We will also sell homemade ice cream again. Everyone seems to enjoy the homemade ice cream. We have made it for several years now and we always sell out.

We will be visiting an area nursing home or shut in home for our Christmas visit. We have several facilities available to us in the Heights area.

Our Halloween party was changed to Lodge 88, but will still be on Saturday, October 26. All of the District Five youth are invited. We will again have a costume contest.

Our Christmas program will be Tuesday, December 3.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, November 20 and Christina Joseph will provide the drinks. See you then.

196, Houston-West Youth Club Reports on District Fun Day Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, Enclosed are two pictures from the District Five Fall Family Fun Day in Danbury.

The Lodge 196 youth group sold crafts and held a raffle drawing for a fund raising project.

Pastries were auctioned and a watermelon seed spitting contest was held to raise funds for a donation to HEB Camp for a new cabin in Linnets Wings.

A wonderful barbecue dinner was enjoyed by everyone.

There were games and prizes and a Christmas ornament contest. The ideas were original and creative as they are every year. It ceases to amaze me what the youth come up with.

It was a wonderful day and a good time was had by all.

Ethnic Identity Among the Czechs and Moravians of Texas

recent decades it has been claimed that Czech is the third most widely spoken language in Texas, after English and Spanish.

The dialects of Czech spoken today in Texas differ in numerous ways from the standard modern language of the Czech Republic. For well over a century these two speech communities, separated by thousands of miles and by different paths of social and political development, have diverged.

Concerning its phonology, the language spoken in Texas differs from standard modern Czech in two significant features: (1) absence of distinctive vowel length, and (2) penultimate stress. Both features are found in the Lachian dialects of Moravia and neighboring Silesia, while penultimate stress (hut not the absence of distinctive vowel length) characterizes the dialects spoken in northern Moravian Wallachia. Standard Czech, in contrast, has distinctive vowel length and stress on the initial syllable.

The lexicon of the Texas dialects also differs significantly from that of standard modern Czech. This reflects lexical differences which generally distinguish Moravia from Bohemia, as well as German, Slovak, Polish, and Wallachian influences which either have never been attested in standard Czech or since 1918 have been "cleansed" from the literary language. Various anecdotes exist about visitors from Bohemia who are unable to understand the Moravian speech of Texas.

Lachia represents both an ethnographic region and one of the four major regions of the territorial dialects of Czech. The ethnographic region of Moravian Wallachia is a part of the territory of the East Moravian (also called Mora y :an Slovak) dialects. Of all the Czech dialects, the Lachian and East Moravian dialects are furthest removed, both spatially and in terms of linguistic features, from standard Czech. The Lachian and East Moravian dialects are more archaic than standard Czech. Since the fourteenth century the speech of Prague and central Bohemia, on which the standard modern language is based, has undergone numerous innovations which never penetrated to eastern Moravia. The dialects of the latter area are often described as transitional: the Lachian dialects exhibit certain characteristics shared with Polish and some linguists classify the East Moravian dialects as Slovak, rather than Czech. The features of the language spoken in Texas have been described as predominately

Lachian.

The influence of the Lachian and East Moravian dialects in Texas was so great that even children of immigrants from Bohemia grew up speaking this way. A correspondent writes in Nainec (Fellow Countryman): My mother . . came from Cermrdi [in Bohemia], but she forgot how to talk Czech. She learned to speak Moravian [morayskyl. Only sometimes, when she'd remember, did she answer in Czech.

Despite a reputation for "clannishness," Czechs and Moravians showed a remarkable tolerance for outsiders who demonstrated respect for their traditions.

Some of the immigrants' neighbors acquired a knowledge of spoken Moravian. Several accounts tell about black orphans raised by Czechs and Moravians who grew up speaking moraysky. In Bohemia stories circulated about the Cerny Moravec (`black Moravian') of Texas: It happened that Mr. Precechtel was traveling from Chicago to Austin on business . . He arrived at a lonely, forsaken train station out in the Texas desert .. . Mr. Precechtel was drenched in sweat and thoroughly bored. He walked around a hit trying to find a place to escape the heat.

All at once he thought he heard someone speaking Czech. Not just Czech, but the speech of his native [village in Moravia]. Mr. Precechtel turned around; the only two people in sight were two blacks sitting on the platform . . . "I've come down with a sunstroke," he exclaimed. He turned in the direction of the conversation and stared at the two blacks. Before it crossed his mind how ludicrous it seemed to ask a black man in the middle of the Texas desert if he is Czech, he blurted out: "Excuse me, please, but are you Czech?" ... The black man matter-of-factly answered him, "Oh no, I'm Moravian" [NG, j a su

Speakers in Texas are aware that their speech differs from standard modern Czech. Many speak a "kitchen language" which is adequate chiefly for conversation relating to the home environment. Conscious of lexical deficiencies, some speakers view their speech as sub-

standard in comparison with standard Czech. A correspondent wrote in Nass'inec: I also know . . . the Moravian and Wallachian speech. At home our people usually talked that way a lot, but our ancestors came from around Freri gtt in Moravia. Even some Polish got mixed up with it, and also our Texas talk. When we wanted to speech Czech correctly, we had to pay attention. Usually when the priests in our Catholic churches preached in Czech, that was the correct speech. At least we got an example of what correct Czech was.

Moravians in Texas have traditionally described their speech as moray sky/po mora ysky/po moraysku "Moravian, in the Moravian way." The term moraysky reflects the terminology which predominated in Moravia until the beginning of the twentiest century.

Moravians had traditionally described their speech as Moravian or Slavic, rather than Czech. The designations Lachian, East Moravian, or Wallachian are not used in Texas to describe the dialects, as these terms were introduced by dialectologists and ethnographers only in the nineteenth century. Today bilinguals, as well as monolingual English speakers, are more likely in English to describe this language as Czech. Bilinguals typically employ two different terms to describe their language: moraysky and Czech.

It is still possible today to hear forms of archaic Moravian dialect spoken by individuals thirty or more years of age, who typically grew up speaking this language at home. Some individuals are remarkably fluent speakers, while others have only a passive knowledge. A decline in the number of speakers has been evident since the end of the Second World War. Not only are these archaic dialects vanishing in Texas. In Moravia they are increasingly replaced by the modern language of Prague and Bohemia, varieties of speech which, as Moravian speakers in Texas can attest, differ quite significantly from the traditional dialects of Moravia.

The English spoken today by the rural population born before the Second World War shows the influence of spoken Moravian. Many speakers, for example, pronounce English di as [t] or [d], e.g., [del] "that," [rink] "think," etc. A noticeable mark of assimilation today is the lack of a "foreign" accent among children and young adults. The speech of those born after the Second World War typically differs little from that of other Texans.
