Lodges Mirror Officer Attitudes Expect the Best "My painting has already taken form in my mind before I start on it. My first attempts are absolutely unbearable, I say this because I want you to know that if you see something worthwhile in what I am doing, it is not by accident, but because of real direction and purpose."

-Vincent van Gogh Over the last few years, I've had the chance to meet and know a lot of local lodge officers. And, while everybody's different, they all have one thing in common: None of them do it to make a living. They are active members who have been asked to accept leadership roles within their local lodge in addition to their other responsibilities. In some cases, they "inherit" the titles; they weren't seeking the added responsibility; however, they felt they had little or no option when their fellow members offered it to them. Does this sound like someone you know?

Generally speaking, it's the lodge officers' responsibility to get the ball rolling on various internal and organizational projects. It's an important job that requires decisionmaking, leadership, and time. It also requires a high-degree of self-esteem.

"Self-esteem means believing in yourself," says Dr. Connie Palladino, a professional development specialist and author.

"Unfortunately," she continues, "too many people, regardless of their age, income or education, worry about failure, doubt their strengths; feel unfocused and insecure, are overly self-critical and stop short of getting what they want in life. Why? Because of poor self esteem, which ends up affecting everything they do, think or say."

What Dr. Palladino has to say makes a lot of sense. I've heard that a person's attitude is the single most important factor in healing or staying well - all the more reason to think'and act in a positive way. Maintaining a positive outlook on life yields positive results at work, at home, and at the lodge.

For a lodge to produce positive results, it is essential for its members to focus their energy by letting go of negative attitudes and turn those negative patterns into positive energy.

The lodge officers that we elect for 1997 will serve during a deciding time in the history of our Society. One of the things I find most exciting about our centennial observance is that it will provide us with the opportunity to clearly define where we are headed as an organization.

The real excitement in 1997 lies less with the actual celebration than it does in making a conscious effort to work together to idol* new opportunities for growth.

Lodge elections will be here before you know it. If you are called to serve - and if you accept - may you also accept the responsibility of your unique strengths and believe in yourself.

"The truth is, you cannot change or control anyone but yourself. Each person must decide individually whether or not to change. When you learn to spend time working on changing yourself instead of worrying about changing others, you will have made an important discovery," says Dr. Palladino.

It's been said that success is 80 percent attitude and 20 percent aptitude. In other words, when you expect the best, your mind focuses on the best. By working together as partners and as brothers and sisters for the common good of the SPJST, "The best is yet to come."

"For a lodge to produce positive results, it is essential to turn negative patterns into positive energy."

Speaking of '97 I had the chance to visit by telephone last week with Sister Margaret Krajca, who serves as Reporter and Fraternal Activities Coordinator of Lodge 25, Ennis.

According to Sister Krajca, members of Lodge 25 are already planning to take advantage of the fact that in addition to 1997 being the SPJST's 100th anniversary, it also marks the 100th anniversary of Lodge 25, Ennis. To mark the occasion, lodge members are planning an all-day event on May 3, 1997, including music by the Vrazels and Mikula Band. In conjunction with the observance, Sister Krajca said the lodge is collecting artifacts and photos tracing the growth and development of the lodge.

"We're especially trying to find photographs of our old lodge hall," she stated. The hall, which was built in 1923, was actually the second lodge hall used

by Lodge 25. It was destroyed by tire in 1970. Lodge members, or other readers who may have photographs or other memorabilia relating to Lodge 25 are encouraged to contact Sister Krajca in Ennis at (972) 878 - 6149.

Best wishes to the members of Lodge 25 for much success in their 100th anniversary project.

V '0' Czech Heritage Week October 20 - 26 "Time may not have wings, but it sure does fly," says Sister Willa Mae Cervenka, of Lodge 54, West, whose letter appears on page four of this week's Vestnik. And she's right. Czech Heritage Week, October 20 - 26 is fast approaching. In her letter, Sister Cervenka offers several suggestions for promoting the week in your local community. If you or your lodge is looking for a way to raise some interest in Czech Heritage Week, this is a good place to start.

Around the Districts District Seven Family Fun Day Set for November 3 The District Seven Family Fun Day is Sunday, November 3 at the VFW Hall on Highway 97 in Jourdanton.

Seven Spring Meeting Minutes May 5, 1996

The District Seven Spring Meeting was held on May 5, 1996. The meeting was hosted by Lodge 133, San Antonio. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited by all members present.

Jarolyn Popp of Lodge 133, San Antonio welcomed all present.

Frances McDonald, President of District Seven, called the meeting to order at 1 p.m.

The list of deceased members was read.

A moment of silence was observed.

The roll call of officers revealed all present. The list of 50-year members was read.

Lan ita Anglin, Secretary-Treasurer of the Supreme Lodge, stated that 1995 was a good year. She also stated that'this was the first time there was an increase of membership. She presented information on the Society's various insurance programs and that there was a surplus over $20 million as of December 31, 1995, and there is enough surplus to pay off the death claims. Funds are invested in bonds or with the U.S. Government. The largest asset mortgage loans (820 mortgages) are $27.5 million with interest ranging from 6.5 to 7.75 percent. $100,000 loans are now available. In conjunction with the 27th SPJST Convention, she also announced that baseball tickets could be bought for a game at Rangers Stadium in Arlington at $4.50. Likewise, she stated that parking tickets would be $4 and that banquet tickets would be $20. Noon meals would be available at the Convention Center.

Vestnik Editor Brian Vanicek explained the survey on the Vestnik at the workshop, reporting that approximately three-quarters of the members favored keeping the Vestnik a weekly newspaper. He also stated that feedback from District Seven was good and that several seasonal projects had been published in the Vestnik. He concluded his presentation by stating though times have changed, the value of fraternalism remains good.

Glenn Pruski, FAC, spoke on items pertaining to projects and charity.

Secretary of District Seven Ernest Jasek gave his report on expenses and income of District Seven.

Sales representatives of District Seven were congratulated on selling $5.4 million in insurance this year. Incentives were Gold for Lodge 79, Corpus Christi,, Bronze for Lodge 93, Hobson, and Honorable Mention for Lodge 31, Yoakum.

District Seven Youth Counselor Susan Bohnenberger gave her report. She announced that at 3 p.m., there would be a Mr. and Miss SPJST Contest.

Gene Hrncir, Rest Home Director, said that he is one of the directors that has served more years than any other director.

They have the same administrators. They are doing real well financially and they are not cutting down. There are 72 beds in Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor and there is also a waiting list

Jim Wiest, State Field Representative for Districts Six and Seven, stated that the more you can do for people, it will come back to you. Lodge 107, Floresville was congratulated for helping out a member in Lodge 161, La Parita.

Next on the agenda was Weldon Schiller, candidate for Secretary-Treasurer.

He is a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone and his family are all members of SPJST. His goal was to improve mortgage products.

The next speaker was Keith Gatewood, candidate for Editor of the Vestnik. He agrees that the Vestnik should be published weekly.

District Seven Committees:

Publication—Betty Jurica was present.

By-Law—Dominic Netek was not present at this time.

Finance—Monta Foster was present.

Insurance—Polly Bayer was present.

District Youth Counselor— Susan Bohnenberger was present.

Monta Foster stated that the recommendations for salaries will be posted in the Vestnik.

Auditing Committee members Tillie Koch, Larry Bednar, and W.J. Pavliska said the books were found to be in order.

The Nominating Committee was Melba Novosad, Monta Foster and Jerry Sijansky.

The Fraternalists of the Year for District Seven were Anna Marie Moss of Lodge 79 (first), Miloslava Phelps of Lodge 133 (second), and Vince Pivonka of Lodge 161 (third).

caught on very quickly! It was fun watch., ing them doing all sorts of twisting, turning, and keeping up with the tempo of the music. They wanted to keep on dancing for the rest of the day.

After lunch as another group was coming in for the next presentation, one little boy rushed to me and asked, "Are we going to dance?" My reply was "Yes." He then said, "That's good!" and happily went back to his chair. During the presentation, we set aside some time for questions from the students.

I think it is important that every ethnic group holds an annual commemorative day. If we learn about other ethnic cultures and they learn about ours, it will help us all to get along better in this world.

Group Prepares to Observe Czech Heritage Week Austin

In celebration of Czech Heritage Week in Texas, the Austin Czech Historical Association is hosting a Czech Buffet for its Second Annual Czech Night. The meal will he served on Friday, October 25, 1996, at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Omni-Southpark (formerly the Wyndham Austin Hotel) at South IH-35 and Ben

White Boulevard in Austin, Texas. The menu for the event features Czech cuisine including potato leek soup, roast pork loin, chicken papiikash, roast beef, dumplings, "zeli," sauerkraut with klobase, and new potatoes. The menu also includes trays of fresh fruits and vegetables for appetizers, and a variety.of Czech pastries for dessert.

Coffee and iced tea will be provided, and a cash bar will be available. Guests will be welcomed at the door by hosts and hostesses wearing colorful Czech folk costumes. The Czech Folk Dancers of West and John Ondrusek and his Dance Hall Boys will provide Czech entertainment for the evening.

The 1995 session of the Texas Legislature, through House Resolution 83 and Senate Resolution 1024, designated the last week in October as Czech Heritage Week in Texas. This year, Czech Heritage Week is set for October 20 to 26.

Sixteen visitors from the Czech Republic on a tour of Texas will be attending the Austin celebration. Invitations to help celebrate its Czech Night have been extended by the ACHA to Governor and Mrs. Bush, to Travis County Judge Bill and Mrs. Aleshire, to Austin Mayor and Mrs. Bruce Todd, and to other honored guests.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville Reports on September Meeting Dear Members, Our lodge held its monthly meeting on Sunday, September 22, 1996, at the Youth Center beginning at 3 p.m. President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order and led the members in the pledge to the flag.

Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the July and August meetings which were approved. Correspondence followed. In absence of FAC Lillie Balusek, her report was given by President Siptak. Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave the financial report. A report was given on Family Day which was a success and enjoyed by all.

A resolution of sympathy was read for our departed member, Ida Buschermihle,

by Gaynell Chudej of the Resolution Committee.

A committee of Elsie Mascheck, Gaynell Chudej, and Mary Matula were appointed to select our lodge's 1996 Fraternalist of the Year.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported on the August and September bingo parties held for the residents of Stevens Convalescent Center. The next bingo will be Monday, October 7 at 2 p.m. Get-well cards were sent to Gaynell Chudej, Alfred Holy, Viola Holly, Julius Galetka, Erwin J. Holy, Otto Orsak, Selma Grones, and Frances Urban.

The members were reminded to make plans to attend the District Six Fall Fun Day at the DuPont Club House on November 3, hosted by the Victoria and Placedo lodges.

Youth Leader Annie Vahalik- reported on the youth club activities. They will be participating in the Second Annual Hallettsville Kolache Fest Parade on Saturday, September 28.

Agnes and Alfonse Svetlik were introduced and welcomed as new lodge members.

The meeting adjourned. A delicious lunch was enjoyed with the meal prayer

given by President Siptak.

25, Ennis Encourages Participation in 100th Anniversary Lodge

Members of Lodge 25 are encouraged to look through their old photo collections and scrapbooks for items relating to the history of Lodge 25, Ennis.

As you know, the SPJST is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 1997. Because our lodge is one of the first 25 charter lodges, we will also be observing our own centennial celebration.

The memorabilia and photographs will be part of a project we are hoping to have completed by May 3, 1997. On that day, the lodge will host a day-long celebration featuring music by the Vrazels and Mikula Band. Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend.

For her efforts, she received a $150 grand prize and checks for $50 in the fruit category and $50 in the miscellaneous (sausage, ham, cherry, strawberry, cinnamon rolls), taking home $250 for her "no tell" recipes.

As for the Czech language class project, it had to he tabled until a later date due to many conflicts.

Food was plentiful at the fraternal hour buffet luncheon and all present had enough to eat.

El Campo-Hillje SPJST Lodge 40 held its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, September 18, 1996, at 6:30 p.m. at Country Pride Restaurant in El Campo, Texas.

A delicious meal of chicken and spaghetti and trimmings were served to 43 members and guests.

Before the meal was served, a special candle-lighting ceremon y was held in memory of the deceased SPJST members from September 1, 1995, to August 13, 1996. These members were: Clara Kasper, Mary E. Sykora, Ella Priesmeyer,

Henrietta Dettling, Thomas H. Abell, John F. Gerbermann, Georgia Vojacek, Bob L. Meisel, George Frank Dornak, Raymond R. Kuzell, Orville Lundy, and Victoria M. Drumm. A beautiful white candle was lit in memory of each of these deceased SPJST members.

President Rita Vanek presided and led the pledge of the flag followed by a moment of silent prayer for our ill and deceased members.

The minutes from the August meeting were read and approved. Frankie Vanek made a motion with a second by Edmond Kana to accept Lucy Baros as a new member into our lodge. Congratulations, Lucy!

At our quarterly meeting, we had a special guest speaker, Craig Hathway.

Mr. Hathway is an attorney-at-law. He presented a very interesting talk about wills and why one should need a will. He gave out many pamphlets and answered many questions concerning wills.

After the meeting, there was a drawing for many door prizes. We would like to thank everyone for coming and showing their support.

48, Beyersville to Host Progressive 42 Tournament

SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a Progressive 42 Tournament 'on Saturday, November 16, 1996:- The registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes.

RegiStration hegins at 8:15 a.m. and we plan to begin playing at 9:15 a.m.

Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes per game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially invite SPJST meMbers but anyone is welcome. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round. The two winners will move to the next table and split up and play with the losers who remain at that table. There will be no head table thus all winners will move.

We will use the same rules that the State SPJST uses except for some changes which apply for Progressive 42.

Also, we ask that as many persons as possible please pre-register so we can plan the food needs. But it is not a must to pre-register.

66, Waco Reports on Battle Dance

At the "battle of the hands" dance at Lodge 66 Linden Hall in Elm Mott, on Sunday afternoon, September 29, it seemed both bands were everyone's favorites. Music was provided by the Vanek Czech Band of Dallas and Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five of Temple.

They were great! There were polkas and waltzes, folk dances, and good Texas two-stepping music for everyone's dancing and listening pleasure.

Members of Lodge 66 Youth Club sponsored a cake walk and it was a great success, as was their operation of the kitchen.

A good time was had by the enthusiastic crowd and it seems a Sunday afternoon for dancing is a favorite of many.

81, Needville Reports on September Meeting

It is officially the fall season. • Hasn't this year gone fast or is it just me? Our last meeting was held Sunday, September 15, 1996, at the lodge hall in Needville.

Thirty-four members and guests attended our meeting. Alma Schiller of East Bernard was our guest. Alma is the cousin of Frances Kubala of Rosenberg.

We were so happy to have Alma attend our dinner and meeting and we hope you will fit it into your schedule to come again and be with us.

The four $5 winners for the month of September were Winnie Susan, Ida Silva, Willie Mae Kuykendall,•and Joyce Pesak.

At twelve noon, it was time to feed our hungry tummies. The baked and fried chicken provided by the lodge was delicious. It was prepared by one of the local restaurants, Darwins. Thanks to President Macha for picking up the chicken and thanks to the wonderful ladies who brought all of the tasty and delicious side dishes and desserts.

At 1 p.m., it was time to start the meeting. President Macha called the meeting to order. Brother Gilbert Walzel led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Absent from the officers was Vincent Newman, our vice president.

Our secretary, Mary Werner, read the minutes from the previous meeting. They were accepted as read. Willie Mae Kuykendall, the treasurer, presented her report which was accepted as read.

Special fund chairman, Gilbert Walzel, presented his report along with the schedule of events for the preceding month.

We here in Needville at Lodge 81 lost a familiar face. His name is Victor Werner of Rosenberg. Vic gave a nickname to everyone and that is how he always addressed that person. When my husband became president of the lodge,

my nickname became "First Lady." Rev. Teykl of the First Presbyterian Church of Rosenberg where Vic's funeral services were held also brought this up in his sermon. Some familiar nicknames were "Little One," "Bluejay," and "Lightning."

Do these names ring a bell for any of you? Our prayers and love go out to his wife Mary and the families of Vic. A moment of silence was observed in Vic's memory.

On the sick list, we have the following people: Jerry Blinka, LaVerne Davis, Emil Pollock, Leona Macha, Annie Horelica, Alvina Gajevsky, and Bradley Vallet. We are happy to report that Bradley is much improved and was released from the hospital on September 19: Bradley got to be home on his 21st birthday, which was September 20.

Happy Birthday wishes to Bradley from Lodge 81 in Needville. Bradley will have to go four days a week, six hours a day, for one month for therapy. We all want to wish you the best. Have faith and God will be there for you. Get well wishes to everyone.

A mistake was made in last month's article about Bradley's parents. What actually happened was the Vestnik left out one sentence in my article. The correction is that his parents are Corlis and Gilbert Walzel and his grandparents are Benita and Gilbert Walzel.

A benefit will be held on Sunday, October 6, 1996, at the SPJST Hall in Needville for Bradley. A chicken-fried steak dinner, a regular and silent auction, and cake walk will he some of the ways to try to help defray some of the expenses. Bradley was in the hospital for five weeks. Lodge 81 voted on donating $100 to the Bradley Vallet Fund and also to donate the use of the hall free of charge tor this young man.

At the end of the year, there will be two officer positions to be filled. Mary Werner is giving up her position as secretary-treasurer and Vlasta Nowotny has moved to Florida to he with her daughter.

Vlasta is the historian of the lodge. We need to start thinking of someone to fill these two openings.

Guess what! It is still raining in Fort Bend County. The majority of cotton fields have not been picked as yet. It is got to quit raining one of these days. The older generations of people do not ever recall it raining so much and not being able to gather the crops.

In reading over my article, I noticed I left out the following two paragraphs.

In the correspondence department, a thank-you note was read from the Edward Dedek family, a letter from Evelyn Mikeska about the Family Fun Day to be held in Danbury on September 22, 1996, and also about sending in your favorite recipes for the cookbook.

It was voted upon to pay Adolph Macha for the picture that was taken at the convention and also for the picture frame. A thank-you note was to be sent to Ray Glass for putting the final touches on the picture free of charge.

Our next meeting is Sunday, October 20, 1996, at the lodge hall. On the menu we will have something different. It was decided upon to have meat loaf and sausage.

That sounds good. Each family needs to bring a vegetable or salad and dessert. Also bring a friend along with you.

Soon it will be Halloween. Everyone please be careful as our youngsters will be out there trick-or-treating that night.

Lodge 91, Crosby to Award $500 College Scholarship

Emma (Vi) Buckley, 50-year member of SPJST, was presented a 50-year pin by Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar at the September meeting. To help celebrate the occasion, special guests included Mr. Buckley; Brian Vanicek, Vestnik Editor; Dan Smith, Bell County Sheriff; Cyndi Angelo; Doris Berndt; and Gene and Jan Matous.

A covered dish dinner was served and enjoyed by all. We certainly have some wonderful cooks, men as well as women.

Thanks to everyone for your contributions of time as well as food.

Treasurer Mary Zatopek read a letter of resignation from Secretary Jerry Valchar. Brother Valchar has been a wonderful and conscientious secretary for many years. We will miss reading his letters in the Vestnik as well. Brother Valchar, thank you for touching our lives.

Members elected Bertha Capps as our new secretary. Bertha is active in other organizations and we know she will serve us well and to her best ability.

President Reisner adjourned the meeting and reminded everyone to stay and enjoy the big band music.

Crosby Lodge 91 will award a $500 college scholarship to a Lodge 91 member graduating from high school in 1997.

Members interested in applying for the scholarship should send their name and address to Chester Stasney, 106 Faith Street, Highlands, Texas 77562. Those responding will be sent an application to complete and return by December 1, 1996. The winner will be announced in May, 1997.

88, Houston Presents September 9 Meeting Minutes Lodge

President Clara Broz opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. and Willie Wehring, Gunther Merkel and Larry Ptlughaupt presented the colors and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Report of Officers President Broz reported Bobby Jones will play at Czech Day. She also announced the Executive Board finalized plans for Czech Day. Lodge 196 will host a seminar held by Frank Klinkovsky.

Lodge 87, Temple Honors 50-Year Member

John and Mary Kosut celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday, October 6 with a dinner and dance party at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. They have four sons, John of Arlington, Virginia; Kenneth of The Woodlands, Texas; Gary of Austin, Texas; and Lanny of Houston. They have one grandson, Zachary. They will further commemorate their 50-year union with a Carribean Cruise in the spring.

The Kosuts were married October 7, 1946, at Sacred Heart Church (now CoCathedral) in downtown Houston.

Mary is the former Maria de las Angeles Garcia of Brownsville and Bay City, Texas. Mrs. Kosut lived in Brownsville until she was seven years old when her family moved to a farm near Bay City. After high school graduation in 1941, she attended Durham Business College in Houston. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for several firms in Houston including Binswanger Glass Company, the U.S. Maritime Commission, and the Railway Express Company. The couple met while both were employed at the Maritime Commission. The couple spent the first year of their marriage in El Paso where John was stationed at the U.S. Army's William Beaumont Hospital in Fort Bliss. The Kosuts returned to Houston following John's discharge from military service and have lived in the Houston area since.

John is a native Houstonian and lived in the Montrose area as a child.

He is a graduate of the engineering col-

John and Mary Kosut lege of the University of Houston. John was inducted into the U.S. Army in June, 1944, and participated in the World War II Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in France and received the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star and Rhine-Danube medals. John is a retired industrial engineer from Hughes Tool Company.

The couple has resided in Katy for 15 years and previously lived in the Houston Heights for 35 years. They are both members of SPJST Lodge 88 and Epiphany of the Lord. Catholic Church in Katy. In their retirement, the couple enjoys traveling, visiting with their children and grandson, gardening, and fellowship with their many friends.

Recording Secretary Jo Ann Buri thanked Margaret Allbritton for taking the minutes at the August meeting.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Homer Alexander reported the next AARP Defensive Driving Course is scheduled for November 7 and 8. The 100-year celebration is scheduled for July 12 and 13, 1997, in Belton, Texas.

Youth Leader Barbara L. Gonzales reported the youth will again have homemade ice cream for Czech Day and also will handle the ring toss booth. Miriam Zalesky is in the process of scheduling craft days between now and Christmas.

At this time, President Broz opened nominations for Fraternalist of the Year Tillie Helmcamp read a profile of her nominee, Lillie Spies, and Marie Stayton read a profile of her nominee, Johnny Broz. Balloting Committee was appointed as Sydney Jurecek, King Hegwood, and Viola Cox. Johnny Broz won the title.

Johnny Broz thanked all who bestowed him with the honor of Fraternalist of the Year and stated it was a complete surprise.

Committee- Reports Donna Merkel, Entertainment Chairperson, reported an exceptionally good month in August with good music and lots of dancers. Thanks to Nat Gonzales for manning the kitchen at the Leo Majek dance.

Willie Wehring, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, reported the board approved several expenditures for the welfare of the lodge. Also thanks to Don Spies for cutting grass and special thanks to Johnny Broz, Cleburn Lincke and King Hegwood for their help. The Workers Party is scheduled for September 29.

A letter was received to allOw smoking in the ballroom.

President Broz brought this letter before the members. She asked if the members wanted a designated area in the ballroom for smoking. Gunther Merkle motioned the ballroom to be Smoke-free at the Saturday and Sunday dances, seconded by Donna Merkle. Discussion followed in favor of "No Smoking." A motion was put to the members and carried.

Willie Wehring of the Social Night Committee reported the bingo purchased chairs for the new building. Dorothy Pilughaupt of the Blueroom reported the Blueroom Party was a profitable event.

Kathy Trefell of the Birthday Club announced Flo Orsag was Collecting donationsfOr pastry to be purchased:from Sam's for CZech Day. Tom Marsh of the Men's Club reported a successful cleanup outside and the Fiesta Dinner is scheduled for September 23. Gene Barcak of the Choral Club stated they will resume practice on September 10. Gene Barcak of the Rules and Regulations Committee said any changes must be submitted by the October meeting to the committee members: Gene Barcak, A.J. Fabrygel, Roselee Lobprice, Ellen Miculka, and Zalesky. Changes must be read at Gary. the November meeting and voted on in the December meeting. Copies of the rules and regulations are available in the office. Edna Wehring of the dance class reported classes start September 13 . at 6 p.m. for the young age group, at 7 p.m. for the middle age group, and 8 p.m. for older ages. Mary Kosut of the Benevolence Committee reported 942 hours were spent doing charity work and '737 hours were spent doing volunteer

work by lodge members.

Bill Souchek, Czech Instructor, reported the 34th Czech class will begin September 16. He gave us a history of the Czech language in this country. He spoke about the fund raiser for the Czech Culture Community Center and how Houston is the perfect place for a museum. Larry Pflughaupt, member of the Czech Culture Society Advisory Board, spoke about the need to recognize the Czech culture and have something to show everyone and bring a real asset to Houston.

Evelyn Mikeska, District Five President, had a memo read about Family Day set for Sunday, September 22, 1996, in Danbury. Lunch will be served from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Bring a covered dish.

The meat will be furnished by the district.

There will be games for all. Fred Buri, District FAC, reported registration will begin at 11 a.m. for the Fall Family Day contests—pastry, needlework and horseshoes. He reported rule changes in the pastry and needlework.

DYC Marie Stayton thanked Lodge 88 for the generous donation to HEB Camp.

For Fall Family Day, the youth will have a watermelon spitting contest for all who purchase a slice of watermelon to raise funds for HEB camp.

Get-well wishes were extended to Slick Ordner and Estell Kelly. Special welcome to Esther Heinsohn and Calvin Orsag who were both back in circulation.

District Five Field Representative Helen Hegwood reported the Olympic membership drive going on now and a sales seminar coming up at Lodge 88.

Jeff Barcek was accepted as a sales representative. Awards went to Victor Janek and Edna Wehring. The 100 Pennies Drive is going on. Thanks to Bessie Dewer for helping at the August meeting and to Flo Orsag for helping at the July meeting.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Reports on Czech Heritage Pay Dear Members and Friends, I am sure that most of you know when you have different things at your lodge how much work it is getting ready and afterwards, cleaning up. Here at our Lodge-92, the Czech Heritage Day was on September 21. Our day was a great success. The weather cooperated and a large crowd came as early as 10 a.m. to be sure to get a table.

The program started on time. There were several accordion players playing good Czech music. Then the Memory Makers sang. There were several people from Dallas and the Metroplex who joined the singers on the stage and everyone seemed to enjoy the Czech songs.

The dinner started at noon with Risky Barbecue catering the good food. Many dinners were sold as the aroma made everyone hungry. Then we had the Po.L.K. of A. that really put on a good

During each break, there were drawinks for prizes that were donated by members and other organizations. All the prizes were nice but you had to be present to win.

win. Some costumes were from Europe but most were made here in the U.S.A. At 8 p.m., the Jodie Mikula band started to play and again the floor filled with happy dancers.

In all, it was a great afternoon. We at Lodge 92 thank everyone from Fort Worth and other cities that came to make this a day to remember for a long time.

As many of you know, we had a drawing and many tickets were sold. The member who won the $500 was one of our older members that used to attend dances and other activities in her younger age, but now sickness has kept her at home. She bought several tickets hoping to win.

Sister Mary (Z) Pulliam is now $500 richer and was proud to have- won. The second drawing winner was Lillian Celia.

The third drawing was won by Carl and Christine Zich. The last two drawings each received $250. All prizes were cash money. Everyone had a great time and all are looking to be here again next year for the Czech Heritage Day again. So thanks goes to all members that put in many hours of work in making this a wonderful Czech Day and thanks to all dancers and hands and the accordion player from Dallas and Metroplex and West, Texas. Lodge 133, San Antonio Reports on September Meeting Lodge 133, San Antonio held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, September 15 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio. Special guests included Field Representative Jim Wiest and his wife, Susie. A special welcome was given to our newest member and sales representative, Audry Stewart.

A letter was received from the Supreme Lodge regarding members from Lodge 203 in San Antonio that did not form. We would like to welcome the following new members of Lodge 133: Philip A. De La Pena, Courtney Deadman, Naomi Huizar, Richard Huizar, Timothy Huizar, James Matula, Jocelyn Matula, Lane Redburn, and Ret Redburn.

Brother John Valchar passed away in September. Our sincere sympathy and prayers are extended to his brother Rudy Valchar and his family and friends.

Members reported as being ill include Kathy Murley and Ernest Popp.

Couples celebrating anniversaries in September are Alvin and Francis Schimcek (50 years) and Tom and Doris Moczygema (53 years), and Billie and Frankie Campbell (40 years).

Jarolyn Popp reminded members that we will not have a meeting in October.

We want to encourage members to attend the Fall District Meeting that will be held at VFW Hall in Jourdanton on Sunday, November 3.

as the Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 133. I would like to thank all of the members of Lodge 133 for this honor..

Jim Wiest addressed the membership regarding the Olympic 96 membership drive. This year, members who refer five or more individuals that become new members will be awarded $10 per new member. Referrals for less than five new members will qualify the member to be entered into a drawing for $50. The lodge will also be entered into a drawing for their choice of a $50 cash prize, an SPJST wall clock or a donation of $100 to the lodge's favorite charity. Sales representatives will have the forms to he completed for this drive.

A Thanksgiving luncheon will he held at our meeting on Sunday, November 17 beginning at 12:30 p.m. The turkey and dressing will be provided by the lodge.

Members are asked to bring a side dish and dessert. We would like to encourage all members to join us.

The SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive is underway through. November.

Before our monthly meeting began, this was our month to have a covered dish supper with everyone bringing a covered dish casserole and desserts.

Everyone enjoyed a wonderful meal.

After the meal, we had a speaker from the Pasadena Police Department. Officer Glenn Derringer gave us a talk on prevention tips concerning telephone calls, social security numbers, long term care insurance, door-to-door sales, our rights regarding scams and frauds and the attitudeS and actions to reduce victimization.

Everyone enjoyed this talk and we thank the Pasadena Police Department and Office Glenn Derringer for his time to come and give this information to us.

All correspondence received was read.

Robert Mayfield received a letter from Debbie Mosely of the Bridge (a place for abused women and children) thanking the lodge for all the paper products that were contributed to them.

Margaret Henson, chairman of the Clear Lake Area for March of Dimes, gave a talk on the March of Dimes Walk they will he having.

Jim Buchta of Ellington Field spoke on a fund raiser for the March of Dimes to be held at our lodge on January 24, 1997.

The Epsilon Sigma Alpha Chapter will be having a western barbecue and a western style show on October 18, 1996, at Lodge 172, Pasadena.

There will be another arts and crafts creation day at the lodge on October 14, 1996, for those who wish to come and make any arts and crafts for our Gulf Coast Czech Festival set for Sunday, October 20, 1996.

The nomination for the Fraternalist of the Year is Louis Hrabina.

The by-laws committee was nominated on and the nominees were Tinnie Walla, Helen Schewe, and Jerry Dressler.

They were nominated by acclamation.

For the reenumeration committee, nomineeswere Jerry Dressler and Alvin Sefcik.

We will he having a Go Texan Dance at the lodge on Oetober 4, 1996.

Louis Harms, District Five Director, presented Lillie Mae Peter with a framed letter about the Czech culture in memory of her late husband Victor Peter.

There will be a benefit for the M.D. Anderson Children's Hospital at our Lodge 172 on January 18, 1997.

Pechal Reunion

The Vitek-Pechal Family Reunion will he held on Sunday, October 27, 1996, at St. Joseph Parish Hall in Cyclone, located east of Temple. Take Highway 53 and at the blinking light near Ocker Brethren Church, take FM 485 for about two miles and the church is on the left and the Parish Hall is toward the back of the parking lot.

The doors will open at 10:30 a.m. and the lunch will he at 12:30 p.m. Everyone is to bring a basket lunch for the family.

We are going to, have a cake walk like last year, so please try to bring a cake. The officers will purchase some items for the drawing/auction/silent auction but we are also requesting you to bring items for the same. The silent auction, will he tried this year to cut down on the length of the auction and drawing. Suggestions for future reunions are welcomed.

If you hti e any family pictures or other items of interest to others, please bring them for display.

Monetary donations will be needed to cover the cost of expenses: hall rent, plates, cups, coffee, tea, postage. etc.

September Meeting

County Czech Heritage Day Set for Saturday, October 12

The September meeting of SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington was held on Monday, September 16 at 7 p.m. with First Vice President Janie Rejcek presiding, Lori Anderlee led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 17 members present.

Sunshine Chairperson Dorothy Adamek reported that we sent get-well cards to . Mark Kaiser who broke both arms and one to Irene Pustejovsky who fractured her knee. A sympathy card was sent to Jeanne Roznos whose uncle passed away. A moment of silence was held for these and Ed Kral who is still ill and Mary Ann Cepak who passed away.

Minutes of the August meeting were read and approved.

Reports were made by Janie Rejcek (kitchen and bingo), Gene Roznos (bar), and Leon Stiborek (treasurer).

We then accepted Mary Frances Doskocil as a new member of our lodge.

Lori Anderlee confirmed a date of November 23 from 7 p.m. to midnight for a free dance to be held at our lodge. We invite anyOne interested to come. We will be having Czech and country music and a great time.

John Adamek gave the trustee report and said he had one bid to rework the paving lot and would get more.

Lodge 183 will have another charity dinner/give away scheduled for October 25. Spaghetti and meat balls will be the main course with contributions of S5 for adults and $3 for children with the proceeds going to their favorite charity.

Family night will be Friday, September 27 with dominoes and card games. Members are asked'to bring a covered dish.

Our next meeting will be October 14.

The Bexar County Czech Heritage Day is Saturday, October 12 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 5721 Rigsby in San Antonio, Texas.

The guest speaker will be John Sharp, Texas State Comptroller.

A Czech meal, consisting of sausage, pork, sauerkraut, potatoes, etc., will be served. TiCkets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Kolaches and homemade noodle soup will be available all day.

Features from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be tarok games, dominoes games, genealogy display, painted egg display,_ noodle soup demonstration, Czech/Slovak videotapes, musical entertainment, Czech dance lessons, and Czech imports.

Vrazels' Polka Band Plays Grand Polka Festival in Las Vegas More than 450 people from Texas joined with the Vrazels' Polka Band as they performed at the Second Annual America's Grand Polka Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, September 8 through September 11. The festival was held in the Triple Crown Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

The festival started on Sunday, September 8, at 2 p.m. with music by Vrazels' Polka Band, followed by Mark Vyhlidal and his Orchestra from Nebraska. Other bands included: The Ernie Kucera Orchestra, The Joe Fedorchak Orchestra, The Herman Dinges Band, Walter Ostanek and His Allstars, the Wendinger Brothers and Gary Seibert. The bands performed from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. each day of the festival.

On Tuesday morning, a polka mass was held in the ballroom with Rev. George Balasko officiating. Deacon John Petter from Temple, Texas assisted with the mass. Hundreds attended, making this one of the largest polka masses that Father Balasko had ever performed. Music was provided by the Joe Fedorchak Orchestra.

Following mass, the Vrazels' Polka Band led a jam session in the ballroom, inviting everyone with an instrument to join in. Musicians from all over the country joined in on the fun. Members of the Texas Polka Lovers Klub, dressed in their familiar red and white outfits, brought color and spirit to the festival — especially when they dance the circle schottische,. a line dance and other special dances.

Highlighting the Vrazels' final performance on Tuesday night was a grand march in which more than 400 dancers

participated — perhaps the biggest and longest grand march the hand has ever played for.

Topping the show was a grand finale in which the audience gathered in front of the stage for a sing-along. "It was great to see everyone waving their red and white porn popms and swaying to the music as they sang along with the hand," says band leader Alfred Vrazel.

Afterwards, Alfred introduced band members and their famileis and friends who worked to make the trip and festival an enjoyable experience. Special thanks went to Alfred's wife, Bernice, for the super job she did in coordinating the trip.

The grand finale ended with Alfred asking everyone to join hands and sing as the band played "God Bless America." During the performance, a large U.S. flag was raised behind the band. "It was a touching moment that will be remembered for years to come," recalls Alfred.

"The members of Vrazels' Polka Band and their families extend a great big 'thank you' to all of our polka fans.

"Your support for our hand when we played was unbelievable," Alfred says.

"Everyone in the group was so responsible and their attire, personality and appearance was first class. We were so proud of each and everyone of them.

"We think it is safe to say that the Texas folks left their mark on the Polka Festival in Las Vegas."

The fall meeting of the Czech Heritage Sodiety of Texas will be held Saturday, November 2, 1996, in Frydek, Texas.

The meeting will he co-hosted by the Austin-Waller Counties Chapter and the Fort Bend County Chapter. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. An authentic Czech meal of goulash and knedliky will he served at 11:15 a.m. for a nominal fee.

In Memoriam In Loving Memory of Joe Panus Joe Panus, age 57 years, ten months and 18 days, of Shiner passed away Sunday, June 30, 1996, at DeTar Hospital in Victoria.

An impressive wake, rosary and scriptural reading service was conducted by Rev. Gerry Cernoch on Monday, July 1 at 7 p.m. at Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner.

The body was conveyed to Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church at 9 a.m.

Tuesday, July 2. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Gerry Cernoch officiating.

Altar Servers were Sara Kovalcik and Summer Ullmann. Serving as Eucharistic minister was Eward Erdelt.

The scriptural readings were read by nephew, David Wenske of Shiner.

The inspirational hymns, -"Be Not Afraid," "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," "Ashes," "Peace Is Flowing Like a River," "Only a Shadow," and "You are Near," were sung by the Catholic Choir. The choir also sang "Blessed Mary" in Czech. They were accompanied by organist Cynthia Hybner.

Offertory participants were daughtersin-law Delores, Sheri and Sheila Panus, and granddaughters Courtney, Kelsea, and Sarah Panus each carried a red carnation.

An appropriate eulogy was given by Michael O'Bannion.

Members of the Shiner Hobo Band provided music after Mass and also played the farewell music at the cemetery.

Burial followed at the Shiner Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home. Graveside service was conducted by Rev. Gerry Cernoch who presented the crucifix to Mrs. Panus.

The pallbearers were close friends: Lenert Heiman, Jr., Robert Janota, Glenn Leist, Adam Brunkenhoefer, Ronnie Leck, Raymond Valis, Ronnie Pfeil, and J.R. Peters, all from Shiner.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department.

The Shiner Volunteer Fire Department provided a fire truck escort to the cemetery with Chief Ronnie Pfeil and President J.R. Peters leading the proceSsion. They were followed by police cars provided by the Shiner and Yoakum Police Departments, which carried the pallbearers.

Mr. Panus was horn August 12, 1938, to the late Frank and Emilie Hanzalik Panus at Charlottenburg near Shiner. He attended Charlottenburg School and Shiner High School.

On September 17, 1960, he married Leonita Vasek at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moulton with Rev. Michael O'Shaughnessy officiating. They settled in Moulton and he was employed by Tex Tan of Yoakum. In 1961, he started working for Moulton Butane Company.

They lived in Moulton until 1969 when they moved to Shiner where he was employed by Lavaca Company. Butane, then Gonzales Butane/Universal Gas and Ferrellgas. He was a propane driver/Salesman for 35 years, during which he held a perfect safety driving

record.

He was also a musician who loved his old time polkas and waltzes. He started playing in his father's band, "The Lone Star Orchestra" . at the age of six. He helped re-organize the famous Shiner Hobo Band in 1986. He was the plungerwielding director who enjoyed making people laugh and have a good time.

He was a dedicated fireman. He served with the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department for 23 years, serving as Chief for three years. He also served six years with the Moulton Volunteer Fire Department. He attended several fire fighting classes at Texas A&M University, where he assisted one summer in teaching a class on fighting propane fires.

Mr. Panus' hobbies included deer hunting, fishing, working on his farm, taking care of the cattle and playing practical jokes on his buddies.

He was also active in several other organizations. He was a director of the Shiner Game and Fish League. Shiner Business Men's Club, 621 Mskt.. Repair, KJT, SPJST and a past member of the Young Farmers. He was a faithful member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.

Joe is survived by his wife, Leonita, of 35 years; three sons and daughters-in--law, Mark and Delores Panus, Paul and Sheri Panus, all of Shiner, Michael and ,Sheila Panus of Cibolo; three granddaughters, Courtney and Kelsea Panus, both of Shiner and Sarah Panus of Cibolo; mother-in-law, Helen Vasek of Shiner; four sisters, Elizabeth Brosch of Rosanky, Georgia Wenske and Edith Hirsch of Shiner and Mildred Chita of Houston, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father on October 14, 1968; his mother on June 22, 1992; and his brother Frankie on September 28, 1979.

He is gone now but will never be forgotten or replaced.

ExpresSion of Sympathy We, the officers and members of SPJST Lodge 82, Ennis, express our sympathy to the family of MILES STRUNC. Mr. Strunc, 77, died Wednesday morning, July 10, 1996, at the Baylor Medical Center in Ennis.

Funeral services for Mr. Strunc were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 12 in the St. John Catholic Church with Father Fred Sidler as celebrant. Serving as pallbearers for the interment were Jimmy Strunc, Gary Strunc, Mark Strunc, Harry Strunc, Miles Stanley Strunc, and Emil Taraba.

He was born November 16, 1918, in Ennis, the son of Wesley and Barbara Toupal Strunc. He was reared in Ennis and attended school in Alsdorf and Telico. In 1940, he entered the U.S. Navy serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. He was discharged in 1946.

On June 18, 1949, he was married to Dorothy Patak of Ennis. After their marriage, they lived in Ennis where he was employed by Leggett & Platt, Inc. He retired as shop foreman in 1985 after 39 years of service. He was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge 82, of which he served as treasurer, and a 30-year member of the Knights of

Columbus.

Mr. Strunc is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Ennis; five sons, Robert Strunc, Joe Strunc, Danny Strunc, Kenny Strunc, all of Ennis, and Ronny Strunc of Bardweil; a daughter, Mrs. Connie Bragg of Ennis; a brother, Frank J. Strunc of Ennis; a sister-in-law, Otile Strunc of Ennis; 13 grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace with Christ.

She then received her L.V.N. degree through the Ennis Community Hospital and worked there for several years. She worked for Dr. James Jeters from 1965 until Dr. Jeters retirement in the early 1980s. She then worked for St. John Catholic Church as secretary for over ten years until her retirement in April, 1985. She was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge 82, of which she served as financial secretary, and the Catholic Daughters.

Mrs. Strunc is survived by five sons, Robert Strunc, Joe Strunc, Danny Strunc, Kenny Strunc, all of Ennis, and Ronny Strunc of Bardwell; a daughter, Mrs. Connie Bragg of Ennis; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Miles Strunc, on July 10, 1996.

She was born September 13, 1917, in Lavaca County to the late Joe and Johanna Tlucek Fojt. She was a member of the SPJST and Sacred Heart Church in

Hallettsville.

On November 12, 1935, she was united in marriage to Alfons F. Michalcik in Hallettsville.

Survivors include her husband Alfons Michalcik of Hallettsville; three sons, Alton and Glen Michalcik of Hallettsville, and Ervin Michalcik of East Bernard; a sister, Martha Tesch of Hallettsville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Hermina Fojt; six brothers, Adolf Fojt, August Fojt, Emil Fojt, Edwin Fojt, Milton Fojt and Otto Fojt, and a grandson, Rodney Michalcik.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, August 30, 1996, at Kubena Funerid Home in Hallettsville.

Services were conducted at 2 p.m.

Saturday, August 31 at Sacred Heart Church of Hallettsville. The Rev. John Peters officiated.

Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of Kubena Funeral Home, Hallettsville.

Pallbearers were Sonny Breithaupt, Charles Glueck, Danny Cizler, Delmar •Fojt, Marvin Fojt, and Alfred Lorfing.

Honorary pallbearers were her grandsons, Wesley Michalcik, David Michalicik, Chris Chovanetz, Shane Michalcik, and great-grandson, Dustin Michalcik, all of Hallettsville.

Expression of Sympathy We, the officers and the entire membership of the Bleiblerville-Nelsonville Lodge 201 express our sympathy to the familieS of our departed brother, ADOLPH TIEMANN, who died at the age of 81 years in McLouth, Kansas.

The funeral services were held on September 2, 1996, from the United Methodist Church of McLouth, Kansas, with Pastor Don Powell officiating.

Burial was in the McLouth Cemetery.

Adolph was horn in Granger, Texas, the son of Willie and Annie (Melnar) Tiemann. On May 1, 1943, he was married to Freda Scott in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He served his country in Europe during World War II. He lived in Kansas for 50 years.

He is survived by his son, Jerry; one daughter, Linda, of McLouth, Kansas; three grandsons; one granddaughter; two sisters; and three sisters-in-law.

Preceding him in death were his wife, his parents, and three brothers.

Barnett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangement.

Lodge 9, Snook Presents Scenes from Recent Youth Club Activities

Youth Letters Section District One Duke Reports on Caldwell Kolache Festival

Members of the Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club attended the District One swim party at Adamson Lagoon in College Station on September 1. Everyone enjoyed the party and the pizza.

Youth Club members delivered their contribution to the Hilton Hotel in College Station on September 1 for the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon. Pictured with the young people is KBTX Channel 3 personalities Jennie Lee and Tony Cornet. The group's made their presentation on air at 11 p.m.

Dear Readers, I have been busy being District One Duke. First, the District One Royalty was introduced at the Kolache Festival in Caldwell. We listed to the Snook Youth Club sing two Czech songs and then we were on stage being introduced by Mr. Bernard Rychlik. I wore a banner that said "SPJST Duke." I helped pass out some song sheets for the Burleson County Czech Singers. I had fun at the Kolache Festival. I liked the antique tractors and the antique cars and trucks. My papa, Rusty Hejl, won Best of Show at this year's show. He has a fine looking red '55 Chevrolet truck.

Papa let us use the truck in the Burleson County Parade. I got to ride in it for a little while but for most of the parade, me and Alicia Ford, the duchess, had to walk in front of the truck carrying the District Royalty Banner. King Vince Morehead and Queen Sue Flippen rode in the back of the truck. The parade was fun, but a long way to walk.

I am looking forward to District One Fail Fun Day at New Tabor on Sunday, October 27. Our lodge is also having a fund raiser on October 20. The youth club members will be selling raffle tickets and meal tickets. We are having fried chicken. Hope to see you there.

District Three Reports on Camp

All our summer activities now have come to an end, leaving with us many great memories.

In June, we had our annual LIT camp, District Three YAD, and the Convention in Arlington.

In July, we had our camp at Val Verde.

August was our State Royalty and State YAD in Temple.

It was truly an SPJST summer!

Our camp was very successful and attendance was great.

Gladys Yates, Lynda Novak and myself want to thank our staff of people who helped with our camp. Without these leaders, it would be very difficult.

There were seven lodges represented totaling 90 campers and leaders.

Our LITs did a good job helping in various ways. The chaperones who were in charge of groups, I thank you for a job well done.

Special thanks to our craft ladies, Diane Engelke and Vicki Sims. Your crafts turned out great. Special thanks to Richard and Louise Burney for the hayride and for staying with us as chaperones for the first time in several years.

Our snowcone man, Jerry Zabonik, who furnished that wonderful treat—"snowcones" in 110-degree weather was always the highlight of the day. Jerry also gave us a Sunday morning service. Everyone was touched by his remarks. Our life

guards, Melissa Hubenak and Amy Parker, watched everyone in the pool and did a good job. Emil Petr our archery man—he is always there to give a helping hand, especially to the little ones. We appreciate you and thank you for the many years in the hot sun or in very little shade. John Engelke, we cannot thank you enough for all you do at camp.

Soliciting donations of ice, cold drinks, cooking of the hamburgers, and just taking care of many chores that you do. .

You were super! And a special thanks to those who donated snacks and food for camp. We all enjoyed your special treats!

The youth had a good time, , swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, doing crafts, and archery. This year, we allowed anyone who wanted to do the challenge course and many of the young people took advantage of it. We enjoyed the game night, karaoke night, the hamburger supper, hiking, the hayride, and just having fun.

The District Three youth want to thank the Supreme Lodge for a wonderful four-day camp. The youth look forward to next year and being with their friends again.

We especially thank our State Youth Director Joni Lange, who spent some of her time with us at camp. She is always welcome! And, to our President Howard Leshikar, thanks for coming by to check on us and make sure we were having a good time. We just hope we did not embarrass you too much when we sang "Happy Birthday" to you.

Our other special visitors were George Pauling, District Three FAC and Rest Home Director; Meribeth Novak, our State Miss SPJST; our District Three Junior Mr. SPJST, D.J. Yates, who tested camp for a few hours and cannot wait until next year; and James Yates (D.J.'s grandpa who just cannot stay away from camp). We missed our usual visit from our District Three Director Sid Pokladnik but he was traveling in Europe with his wife.. We wish him the best and send him all our love.

Thanks to our nurse, Gladys Yates, who did a double. She was the nurse as well as my assistant along with Lynda Novak. Thanks, Lynda for the necessary errands you did.

Thanks to all the donors who donated in any way to make our camp a happy one.

24, Cyclone Youth Club to Meet Sunday, October 13 Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Cyclone Youth Club will meet this Sunday, October 13 at 2 p.m. at Flag Hall. All members and parents are encouraged to attend. Our Halloween Carnival and Haunted House is Sunday, October 27. Activites will include many carnival games, a costume contest, and a haunted house. A meal and snacks will be available.

Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club Reports on September Meeting The meeting of Lodge 107 was called to order at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, 1996, by Joline S. Talor and Taler led the pledge.

CZECH DIGEST Beethoven's Music Recovered A significant original score by Ludwig van Beethoven, which was stolen from a Czech archive, has recently been recovered. The score will be returned to the archive in the town of Benesov near Prague, from where it was stolen. It was taken under so far unknown circumstances and is one of just four known Beethoven scores in the Czech Republic - and the only complete hand-written one in the world. This score was written in 1801 and contains sketches of the famous composition, the Moonlight Sonata. The score also contains notes which support the theory that Beethoven was a Freemason, or was supported by them.

Karlovy Vary Film Festival The Russian-Kazakh film Prisoner of the Mountains by director Sergei Bodrov was awarded the main prize, the Crystal Globe, at the closing ceremony of the 31st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The U.S. star Gregory Peck was presented with an award for his life's work.

The Karlovy Vary festival was first held in 1946. Under the communist regime, it was organized once every two years, alternating with the Moscow festival. Since the 1989 fall of communism, the Karlovy Vary festival has been held annually. Guests included President Vaclav Havel, Premier Vaclav Klaus and outstanding film artists, such as Gregory Peck, Whoopi Goldberg and Alan Alda.

Crop Circle Curiosity Five circles were discovered in a field of corn near the village of Nechvalice near Teplice on an August morning. The corn was flattened in one direction and there were no steps leading towards the circles. The largest was about twenty meters in diameter and the four others — all perfectly symmetrical — were placed around it at intervals of just under ten meters. The large circle was connected with the small ones by paths about a meter wide. It thus looked as if something big with four legs had landed there. One villager said that between one and three in the morning, he heard a

noise like that of stones falling after a blast in, a quarry.

Rhinos to Roam?

According to Josef Jancek of the Liberec zoo, twenty adult rhinoceroses and their young will be strolling in the former military area of Ralsko, north Bohemia, if necessary funds are gathered. NATO's scientific section has approved the plan. In June, the section discussed the possible funding of the revitalization of the area, formerly one of the bases of the Soviet Army units deployed in Czechoslovakia from the 1968 invasion until shortly after the 1989 fall of communism. NATO is to make a definitive decision later this year. Rhinoceroses are incapable of breeding in captivity, as their manner of reproducing is very complicated, requires a great deal of space and a number of partners to choose from.

Czech Sports Legend Dies Soccer devotees bade farewell to Frantisek Planicka, 92, the last living participant of the 1934 World Cup final in Rome where Czechoslovakia lost to Italy 1-2 in extra time. Planicka, a goalkeeper and the most admired Czech player of all time, died on July 20.

Planicka played almost one thousand
