Sister Agnes Mikush

Lodge 4, fiallettsville member P,chieves nd Age of 96" The SPJST congratulates Sister Agnes (Rebak) Mikush, a member of Lodge 4, Hallettsville, who celebrated her 96th birthday on May 15, 1996. As such, Sister Mikush is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required.

Sister' Agnes (Rebak) Mikush was born on May 15, 1900, in Hallettsville, Texas. She was one of 12 children born to Anton and Mary Rebak, immigrants from Czechoslovakia. Her sisters are Lillie (Rebak) Hermes, Sophie (Rebak) Melnar, Millie (Rebak) Simecek, and Vlasta (Rebak) Pavlicek. Two of her sisters, Stacy (Rebak) Beyer and Annie (Rebak) Pelech, and her five brothers, Anton, Joe, Louis, Willie, and Emil, are deceased.

Agnes recalls vividly the "horse and buggy days" and the hard times that she and her five brothers and six sisters endured. To make the situation even more difficult, when Agnes and her brothers and sisters were young, her father, Anton, returned to Europe to visit his son, a Catholic priest, from a previous marriage. While on this trip in Europe, her father died.

Agnes married Joe E. Mikush on April 15, 1921, in Hallettsville, Texas. They were sharecroppers in the Hallettsville area. In 1950, they bought a small farm in the Moulton area near Komensky.

They mainly raised cotton, corn, cattle, hogs, and chickens.

Agnes and Joe had one daughter and one son, who both died in infancy.

Agnes' life was the birth of a son when she was 42 and Joe was 50.

"This really changed their life," son Joe J. Mikush says. "Imagine two middle-aged parents with two unsuccessful births at an early age and then at this age, they have a snooty-nose kid."

After 61 years, nine months of marriage, Agnes's husband, Joe, passed,

away on January 18, 1982.

Son Joe J. Mikush maintains a residence in Houston Texas; however, 90 percent of the time, he lives in Veracruz, Mexico, where he is the president of Latin American operations of Grant Prideco, Inc. "Agnes was a very good cotton picker,"

Brad is a member of Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje and a 1996 graduate of Wharton Junior College. He is the son of Ardis and James Bacak and the grandson of Mrs. Lillie Sbrusch and the late Charlie Sbrusch, Jr. Brad's future plans are to attend Sam Houston State University where he will major in agricultural business.

Tammi is a member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood and a graduate of Connally High School in Waco.

She is the daughter of Robert and Peggy Dobecka and the granddaughter of Robert and Lydia Dobecka and Rosilee Bartosh and the late John Bartosh.

Tammi is planning to attend McLennan Community College in the fall majoring in radiology.

No Time Like the Present'

With just under 100 days to go in the SPJST's "Olympics '96 Membership Drive," now is a good time to acknowledge the ongoing efforts of our SPJST sales representatives. These are the brothers and sisters who get out in our local communities and tell the story of the services and benefits offered through our Society.

Typically, those sales representatives who are the most successful are those who know the best and latest methods of selling fraternal insurance and related financial products. They are aware of the trends affecting the marketplace and are able to visualize the world tomorrow so they can help members and prospective members meet their financial obligations in the future.

By supporting our volunteer sales force, providing them with sales leads and conferring with them on our insurance needs, we are doing our part to ensure the long-term viability of our fraternal order.

I had the chance to visit with Marvin Heintze of Lodge 187, Round Rock at the District Two Fall Meeting last Sunday at Lodge 29, Taylor. Brother Heintze always seems to have a joke or a story to pass along - and last Sunday was no different.

In the mail bag this past week, was a humorous article from Brother Heintze, simply titled:

Last Call for Entries Attention all of you cooks out there: October 1 is the deadline to get in your recipes for the SPJST's 100th Anniversary Cookbook. And, for the artistically inclined, it's also the deadline to get in your entry for the SPJST cookbook cover design contest. According to Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, who is coordinating the project, a lot of recipes have already come in. "The response has been great," she says, emphasizing that others who want to be

recollects Joe. "I would try very hard to beat her every day but she always managed to have a few more pounds at the end of the day. I don't think I ever heat her. She and I together would pick a bale of cotton every two days."

Agnes is a deeply religious woman and-a longtime member of the Vsetin Brethren Church. "It had to be really bad weather or there had to be something very important to do before we missed church," son Joe recalls. She was also very active in the SPJST. "I think we made every meeting while I was growing up," he says.

Agnes also enjoyed sewing and making quilts in her spare time to help with the family finances. She also loved canning fruits and vegetables and "She cooking. made the best sweet pickles I have ever tasted," Joe attests. "We never missed a meal."

A favorite pasttime for Agnes and Jee was playing dominos. On winter nights, neighborhood couples would get together and play until the wee hours of the morning. "They would put me to bed early, but I wasn't asleep," says Joe. "I could hear the accusation by the ladies that the men were cheating and believe me — they were — but somehow the

ladies would always win.

"After they quit playing, they would cook two or three homemade sausages and some eggs and eat breakfast. Most of the time, I could smell the sausage cooking and would get up just in time to eat some. Even though times were hard, they really enjoyed life by doing simple things that didn't cost much money."

Agnes has three grandchildren, Craig Mikush, married to Sandra Warren, who resides in Spring, Texas; Sheryl (Mikush) Walker, married to Tommy Walker, who resides in San Antonio, Texas; and Wanda Mikush, who resides in Houston, Texas.

Agnes also has one great-grandchild, Justin Joseph Mikush, son of Craig and Sandra, and one step-grandchild, Alisa Walker, daughter of Tommy Walker, Sheryl's husband. Agnes loves these children and they love her.

Agnes has resided in Stevens Convalescent Center in Hallettsville since 1991. Her Age 96 presentation was made on May 18th at the home. In attendance were several family members, friends and SPJST representatives, including Lodge 4 President Joe Siptak, District Six Director Matt Vanek and Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar.

Once again, the SPJST congratulates Sister Mikush for achieving the Grand Age of 96.

SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Begins October 1

During the Fall of 1995, the 100 Pennies Drive raised $16,800 for a total of $47,500, which equaled to 95 scholarships. To reach our goal to award 100 scholarships in the 1996 100 Pennies Drive, we need to raise about $20,000 which is a 20 to 30 percent increase over the past few years. We have faith in our Supreme Lodge Officers, Directors, District and Lodge Officers, Youth Leaders, and the entire membership and friends that we can meet our goal.

To coincide with our 100th year anniversary celebration of our society, our goal is much larger than usual, and we must meet our goal in order to award 100 scholarships. We are asking from each of you, to put in a little extra effort in promoting this drive. We anticipate that this extra effort in promoting this drive will make this possible. We all want to be winners, and therefore, we must achieve this goal.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood Reports on Westfest Dear Readers, As your Fraternal Activities Coordinator, I want to report on Westfest.

After all the preparing for it, it is over with and plans are being made for a better one next .year. Even though the weather was not cooperating, it all turned out good.

I want to, on behalf of the lodge officers and members, thank so many individuals that came out and helped put it on. To those that came out to clean, repair, and paint the booth—thank you.

There are those who helped set it up and get everything in place and then helped • clean the booth and bring it back to the lodge. There were many that cleaned all the utensils as it takes lots of cooking supplies to run for two days. There are workers that came out Friday evening to help peel and chop up potatoes for the two days. Thank you!

We also want to thank all the shift workers who all came and worked their shifts. They know their shifts from year to year. So they are real dedicated workers. We also want to thank all the volunteer workers that came out to help every year that do not belong to the lodge. It takes eight to ten workers each shift to work inside and all those that work in the back cooking sausage and kraut. The potatoes are cooked at the lodge by a very dedicated worker and his helpers.

He also bakes all the bread at the lodge.

Thank you to those that delivered and got the supplies to the booth. The youth club also thanks everyone for helping sell their sausage kolaches. Westfest and the annual picnic are two of the lodge's money making projects. Part of this will go hack into the community in donations.

Thank you again everyone. Without all of you, we could not do this successfully.

Dear Members, It has been a long time since I have reported. It is like starting all over again.

Our president Gladys Allison called our meeting to order.

We stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and for a moment of silence. We pray for our departed members.

All reports were approved as read.

We also made a donation to the new part of our school for equipment.

Let's all remember the Buckholts Volunteer Fire Department for the dance they are having on Saturday night with music by Jerry Haisler. So everyone come out and support them.

Our next meeting is October 7, 1996, at 7 p.m.

25, Ennis Reports on September Meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 25, Ennis was called to order by President Charlie Patak at 8 p.m. on September 12.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Johnnie I. Krajca. Everyone remained standing for a moment of silence for a dear friend and polka lover, Bob Pechak, who died on September 10, 1996, in Las Vegas.

Secretary Pat Fowler read the minutes of the August meeting and ,Kay Kovar gave the financial report. Both were approved as read.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Margaret Krajca reported on the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive and the State Volleyball Tournament on November 16 at Bruceville/Eddy High School gymnasiums. The Fraternalist of the Year will be nominated at the October 10 meeting.

The lodge incentive mid-year report was ready to he signed by the lodge president and sent to the Supreme Lodge.

The board minutes were read.

Discussion was held on the 1997 Polka Festival that was rescheduled to Friday, May 30, Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1.

100th Anniversary Celebration A 100th anniversary of SPJST is being planned by Lodge 25 for Saturday, May 3, 1997, with food and entertainment and music by the Vrazel Polka Band of Cameron and the Mikula Polka Band of Ennis. The officers promise to make this a very special weekend so plan now and help Lodge 25 celebrate 100 years of benevolence, humanity, and brotherhood (1897 to 1997). Watch for more information to come in the Vestnik.

The next meeting will be October 10 at 8 p.m.

29, Taylor Reports on September Meeting Lodge

SPJST Lodge 29 held its monthly meeting on Sunday, September 8 at 4 p.m.

Ronnie Rieger presided over the meeting. Janet Kaiser read the minutes and gave the treasurer's report. All officers were present except Elaine Machu, reporter. Edwina Jezisek gave the youth club report. Vice President Donna Paseman gave the FAC report.

New members accepted into the lodge were Charles R. Barr, Claudia Barr, Christie Barr, Andrew Barr, Charles Jeremiah Barr, Matthew Barr, and Robert Stojanik.

October 1 is the deadline for turning in recipes for the 100 year cookbook that is being put together by the Home Office.

We need everyone from Lodge 29 to send in their favorite recipes.

84, Dallas Reports on September Meeting Lodge

Dear Members, Our meeting was well-attended last Monday, September 16. Sister Wanda Petr led us in the pledge to our flag and afterward, President Yeager asked for a moment of silence for a departed member, Brother Jim Pavelka.

Correspondence was received from Lodge 92 inviting all to Czech Heritage Day, RVOS, Dr. Pepper: Company, and Brother James Janousek.

Sister Tydlaska of the Sunshine Committee sent get-well cards to Sisters Ruby Driscoll, Alfreda Sadecky, and Estelle Smith, and Brothers John Jones, Jr., Johnny Gaiser, and John Becan.

Sympathy cards were sent to Liddie Pavelka on the loss of her husband and to Olga Pechak on the loss of her husband.

To the families, our sincere sympathy is extended. May your loved ones have eternal rest.

The living memorial and the special committee reports were presented by Sister Salac.

The hall rental report was presented by Brother Emil Petr.

Youth Leader Petr reported on the teens .helping at the Czech Fest. The youth and teens are invited to a swimming party at the Wolfe's home. She also reported on their meeting.

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council report was presented by Sister Wanda Petr. She invited all to attend the next meeting with refreshments and games on October 10 at our lodge. This will be hosted by WOW. The Czech Culture report was presented by Ben Jarma and President Yeager.

All hope a large crowd will attend the October 6 cultural mosaic day at the Texas State Fair Hall of State from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The ethnic and culture celebration includes the Czechs who have gathered each year to renew friendships, music, food, and crafts. Admission is free and the building is cool.

Sister Cheri Petr, who hires the bands you enjoy dancing to, gave her report— more good music.

Sales Representatives Brothers Emil Petr and Ben Jarma asked for help to secure new members from members who 'enjoy being a part of this organization.

Our Czech Fest was a great success.

We wish you had been here to enjoy all the fraternal friendship, food, games, and dance. Don't feel left out long because with any planning during the months ahead, you can enjoy our next one in September, 1997.

On November 16 is the Vrazel's Polka Band. That's the evening we serve "Rudolph's Special" chili in the kitchen all night. The bowl size and price has not been determined but the committee stands behind their promise. The chili will taste great, and take all the crackers you desire with each bowl you purchase.

Then enjoy dancing from 8:30 to 12:30.

Admission is $6 for adults and ages 17 and under get in free.

On December 7, the Czech Harvesters come to play your favorites. On December 31, here's a reminder to get your reserved tickets early. It's the Buckholts, Texas Band—the Vrazel Polka Band—that will keep you on the dance floor all evening.

The Ladies Circle of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas, met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, September 10, 1996, at the lodge hall with 54 members, one guest, and seven men present.

President Florence Greer opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and then welcomed new members, Jean Holland and Becky Garcia, and our guest, Eva Dockery, daughter of Maria Prill.

After one correction, the minutes were approved as read. Correspondence included a thank-you note from Joe Paprskar, Sr. Sunshine Chairman Evelyn Spacek reported Millie Wruble, Joe Paprskar, Charlie Paprskar, and Mike Paprskar (all brothers) as being on the sick list. Also, Anne Polk in Utah had pneumonia; Aurora Maldino had an accident; Frank Tesar had a stroke; and Phyllis Cihacek fell and had many bruises. We wish all of you well!

Treasurer Spacek gave her report and it will be filed.

Hostess Chairman Jo Prochaska thanked today's hostesses: Natalie Maly, Hermina Cihacek, Elizabeth Gregory; and announced October hostesses: Inez Krivanek, Nancy Paprskar, Laura Posival, and Julia Dueser. No hostesses in November as we will be going out to eat—be here in October to find out where we will be going.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, September 25, 1996 The September 21 Czech Heritage Day was discussed and plans were finalized for the pastry booth to be manned by the Ladies Circle. Remember to have your pastry donations at the hall by 10 a.m. on that Saturday so they can be sliced and ready to be available for sales by noon.

Maria Prill contributed a monetary donation to be used for the December meeting.

Manager Joyce Tesar announced upcoming dances (see Vestnik calendar) and reminded all to reserve 1997 dateslor anniversaries, parties, etc., as soon as possible as many dates are already booked.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to our September honorees: Elsie Anders, Ernie Dueser, Florence Greer, Elizabeth Howard, Dona Hubenak, "Mac" McMillen, Frances Simmank, Evelyn Spacek, Betty Whitehead, Raymond Hubenak, and Becky Garcia. All birthday honorees go first in the food line, so it's a great time of celebration.

Louise Oujesky brought us the words of our state song, "Texas, Our Texas," and President Greer did an excellent job of leading the singing. We must practice this again soon as it is a beautiful song.

Clara Marchiona gave a reading, "He's Always There for Me," and President Greer gave us bloopers from church bulletins and a mother's letter to her Polish son that brought gales of laughter. We appreciate our members' readings, jokes, etc.—our informal programs are short but always worthwhile.

On September 12, Lodge 97, Placed() held its meeting at the Victoria County Electric Co-Op Building. The meeting was called to order by President Yvonne Garrett. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Christine Dum, the district queen.

Secretary Dennis Vanek read the minutes and gave the financial report. Guest speaker Jim Wiest spoke on the SPJST membership drive campaign. Members must be 18 years old to participate for many cash prizes.

Mrs. Dorothy Fuzzell reported on electing a Fraternalist of the Year award.

Ms. Dorothy Elsik, longtime member and past president for many years, was voted Fraternalist of the Year to represent our lodge. Congratulations, Dorothy!

Mrs. Fuzzell also reported on scholarship applications. The applicant must be a member for at least one year. The lodge also accepted Mrs. Shirley Sklar, a new sales representative.

Our lodge will make a donation to the 100 Pennies Drive. We discussed the upcoming District Six Meeting to be held at the DuPont Clubhouse. Circle of Czech Women Reports on September Meeting Dallas

Our meeting was called to order by our President Bertha Podhrasky who welcomed 18 members and five men guests.

Alice Roberts led us in the Pledge of

Allegiance and a moment of silence for our member Lillian Moran.

The minutes were read by our secretary, Faye Wright, and were accepted as read.

The treasury report, compiled by our treasurer, Vicki Kohn, was read by Alice Roberts. This report included donations in memory of Dorothy Reznik by Ella Mae Faraizl, Esther and Bob Cunningham, and Bertha and Julius Podhrasky.

Memorials for Jim Pavelka, husband of Libbie Pavelka, were made by Libbie Elsik, Ann Zvolanek, John and Evelyn Trojacek, Lydia Kartous, Bob and Esther Cunningham, Julius and Bertha Podhrasky, Alice Roberts, Mary Sebestik, and Jerry and Vicki Kohn.

Memorials for Lillian Moran were from Joe and Adell VIk, Jerry and Vicki Kohn, Libby Elsik, Ann Zvolanek, John and Evelyn Trojacek, Bob and Esther Cunningham, Bertha Podhrasky, Alice Roberts and Mary Sebestik.

A card and money gift were sent to Roy and Lydia Alholm in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Correspondence was read by Evelyn Trojacek as follows: a thank-you card from Millie Naska, SMU, for our support of the Czech Doctors studying there.

Announcements The newly formed Texas Cultural Partnership is planning Heritage Day at the State Fair on Sunday, October 6, 1996. This new group is comprised of Czechs, Norwegians, Italians, Celtics, and a Civil War group. A great deal has been done with still more to be done.

Ads are being sold to be put in a program book which will help finance the program. The program will be held in the Hall of State at the fairgrounds. The Czech Harvesters will play for a dance.

Souvenirs from the Czech Republic will be sold by Bertha Podhrasky. Coffee, cold drinks and kolaches will be available. Good food, prepared by Bessie Petr catering, will also be served. So everyone come, bring the entire family and prepare to have lots of fun in the air-conditioned Hall of State on Sunday, October 6, 1996.

Lodge 175, Rosenberg Promotes Sale of Popular Historical Text "The Czech Pioneers of the Southwest" The highly sought-after book of the first Czech settlers in Texas has been republished in memory of Henry R. It was reported that Lillian Graesor had cataract surgery and cannot drive.

Ann Zvolanek reported on Liddie Pavelka. Alice Roberts reported on Mary Sebestik. She has day and night help and is coping as well as possible after breaking her hip. Evelyn Cechan, our reporting secretary, has injured her shoulder rotor cuff and will have surgery. Ella Mae Faraizl reported that she has not been feeling well and could not attend meetings at this time, but she will be thinking of us. Congratulations to Lydia and Roy Alholm on their 50th anniversary.

Esther Cunningham and husband Bob have returned from the Czech Republic, among other places. It was good to have them back.

Georgia Brozek of the Sunshine Committee reported that she sent sympathy cards to Ed and Lydia Tyroch on the loss of Ed's brother, Ben Tyroch; Theresa Carper on the loss of her mother-in-law, Bessie Carper; the Reznick family for the loss of Dorothy's aunt Lillian Moran; and Liddie Pavelka for the loss of her husband, Jim. Get-well cards were sent to Mary Sebestik and Lydia Kartous.

Vlasta Jurik brought the door prize, which is our way to raise money this year.

We passed a motion to buy an ad in the Program Book for the State Fair. The motion was made by Alice Roberts and seconded by Libbie Elsik.

Our November meeting will feature the Po.L.K. of A. Dancers. We all, look forward to this.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to our September birthday sisters and a good lunch was served by our September hostesses: Vlasta Jurik, Helen Parma, Lydia Kartous, and Ella Mae Provazek.

Hostesses for October will be Mary Siel, Annie Staglik, Betty Grier, and Bobbie Ann Bickle.

We were sorry to hear Father George's father passed away in India. Donations were given to help Father's trip to his funeral. May he rest in peace.

I heard from Lydia Alholm this morning (September 13). They arrived home last night from their anniversary celebration in Las Vegas, where they attended the Polka Festival that ended with some bad news. A friend of theirs passed away on Tuesday night after a dance. May he rest in peace.

Door prizes went to Joe Kozel, Frank Kovar, Martha Boenisch, Rose Nieswidomy, and Rose Romio.

Our hostesses for our October 2 meeting are Jeanie Mason, Carrie Milan, and Gertrude Dawson.

Cemetery Association Meets September 29 The annual meeting of the Czech National Cemetery Association will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 29, 1996. The meeting will take place in the Community Room of the library at 750 Clubside Drive in East Bernard, Texas.

Friendship Club Reports on September Meeting Our meeting was called to order by our president, Jo Prochaska. She welcomed our members and guests, Eddy Hajek, Bettie Richardson, Eva Dockey, and Frances Matthews. (After our meeting, Eddy Hajek joined our club.). A big thank you to Joe Kozel and Ann Sustala for the beautiful music we all enjoy so much. Ann joined in with her drum.

Congratulations went out to Roy and Lydia Alholm for their 50th anniversary and to Josephine and Ted Bugaj on their 52nd anniversary. May you have many more.

Czech Heritage Society The Fellowship Hall of the First Christian Church was filled for the quarterly meeting of the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society. President Marie Matcek offered the opening prayer and a minute of silence was observed for our passed members and our old friend, Victor Peter.

After the Pledge of Allegiance, the Czeeh National Anthem was sung, with Marie Meek accompanying on the piano.

Secretary Gladys Rod read the minutes.

Treasurer Edith Molberg gave the treasurer's report. A thank you for a scholarship was received from Jennifer Reck.

Edith Molberg gave a brief report of the Miss Czech-Slovak USA Pageant in Nebraska in which Tria Molberg . participated. She described the feeling and involvement of the people in the small town who came together to put on this annual event.

We will be asking for members to help put together displays in observance of the

Czech Heritage Week, October 20-26.

Materials will be given to all schools, libraries, and businesses interested in setting up displays.

Please let President Matcek know if you will be able to attend the State Czech Heritage Meeting on November 2 at Frydek, so there will be enough food planned for those attending. We will be looking into getting buses or van rides for some future events we would like to attend. Victoria Chapter will be celebrating the 12th Annual Czech Heritage Festival on October 27 to be held at Sun Valley Ranch. Members and friends are invited out for a day of good food, fun and lots of entertainment, and a CzechEnglish Polka Mass.

The TOCA meeting held at LaGrange was inquired about and we are waiting to hear of the location of the new Czech Museum. Also letters from several other Texas Czech Museums were discussed.

John Drozd and his wife reported on the fund raiser for the Czech Cultural Center held in Houston. September 14 is the Kolache Festival in Caldwell, and several members plan to attend. Gladys Rod attended the meeting in Dickinson and reported that over a thousand Czechs attended. She and the others attending had a great time and were pleased with the good turnout.

Marjorie Matula reported on the status of the book "Emigration to Texas from the Mistek District Between 1856 and 1900."

We are expecting to have the book in time for the visit of Drahomire Strnadel at the state meeting. Rev. Benton Thurmond gave a history of the book "And Who Will Kill You..." and said there are still copies available for sale.

Chairman Daniel Marek of the Nominating Committee presented the slate of officers his committee was presenting. Thanks to the hard work of the committee, the officers were elected.

They are: Marie Matcek, President; Merrill Adamcik, Vice President; Virginia Balusek, Second Vice President; Kathy Hilterbridle, Financial SecretaryTreasurer; Ethel Meek, Reporter; Nancy Novasad, Historian; and Emil Bilek, Annie Mae Gloeckner, and James Matcek, Directors. Thanks to the past officers and welcome to the new officers who will take office in January.

Virginia Balusek introduced our special guests, Margorie and Julius Matula of Victoria, who presented glimpses of the Czech Republic. They spoke on their trips to the Czech Republic and showed a video, and had pictures, glassware and other items. They also answered questions.

The meeting was attended by over 50 members and guests, and a brief social followed.

Czech Festival Set for October 27 The last Victoria County Czech Heritage Society news was incorrect in stating the date of the Czech Fest. The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society Czech Festival will be held at Sun Valley Ranch on Highway 87, north of Victoria, on October 27, 1996.

Mrs. Mary Susen Celebrates 104th Birthday What a pleasure and honor to write about this Grand Lady we all know as Mrs. Mary Susen, who reached the age of 104 years on August 12, 1996.

Mrs. Mary Susen was born in Bleiblerville, Texas, to the Mr. and Mrs. Schimera Family and was named Mary Schimera.

On October 21, 1914, she was united in marriage with Mr. Willie Susen in Bleiblerville, Texas. They made their home in Bleiblerville, Texas, on the farm. Her husband, Willie Susen, passed away in 1972.

After Mr. Susen's death, she continued living on the family farm. One year prior to entering the Rolling Oaks Nursing. Home, in 1989, she made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Olga and Albert Fick.

We all know her as a great wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, a great neighbor, relative and friend, an excellent cook, baker and housekeeper.

She was blessed with five children—three daughters and two sons.

Two daughters have passed away and she also lost one great-great-granddaughter. She has ten grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and threegreat-great-grandchildren.

She is still active, beside a hearing problem. She still enjoys reading the local newspaper so she can keep up with her relatives and friends.

She is the oldest member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church.

She loves to get cards and enjoys visits. She now resides at Rolling Oaks Nursing Home on Highway 36 North in Bellville, Texas 77418.

Bexar County Czech Heritage Day Set for Saturday, October 12 The Bexar County Czech Heritage Day is Saturday, October 12 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 5721 Rigsby in San Antonio, Texas.

The guest speaker will be John Sharp, Texas State Comptroller.

A Czech meal, consisting of sausage, pork, sauerkraut, potatoes, etc., will be served. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Kolaches and homemade noodle soup will be available all day.

Heritage Society to Publish Historical Text Czech

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas announces a soon-to-be released publication entitled Emigration to Texas from the Mistek District between 1856 and 1900

by Drahomir Strnadel. The book contains nearly 3,000 names of Czech emigration from northeastern Moravia in the Czech Republic along with historical data describing economic conditions and procedures needed to petition permission to leave their homeland for Texas.

Hundreds of families in Texas will find this book most helpful toward locating their ancestors from that region as an estimated 80 percent of the Czechs can trace their roots from there. A total of 57 villages are listed.

Inspired by the late Albert J. Blaha, Sr., founder of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Drahomir Strnadel of Trojanice secretly obtained this valuable research information from the archives over a ten-year period in order to help the Texas Czechs in their quest toward tracing their ancestral roots.

Originally published in Czech in three separate volumes, Mr. Strnadel presented this valuable information to the Czech Heritage Society of Texas in October, 1989. The Victoria Chapter, one of 14 in the state, agreed to prepare it for publication and distribution. The three books were combined into one volume. The history section was translated into English. Every effort was made to keep the text in its original form for the sake of authenticity. It was put together by Marjorie Matula of Victoria, Chairman of the CHS Board of Trustees, who has had over 20 years of experience in doing family history research. This is her fourth publication to complete.

SPJST Founder Commemorated in Lichnov, Moravia Museum

By Cecile Mendel Wheeler Many thousands of U.S. citizens travel each year to enjoy the lovely beauty of the Czech Republic, especially the city of Prague and the beautiful rural areas of rolling hills and mountains. My mother, Julia Kubena Mendel, and I had been among them before with Rudy and Henrietta Klecka's Klub Kontinental Tours of East Bernard, and brought back many happy memories. But nothing could have prepared me for the wonderful surprise I had in store when Klub Kontinental's tour in June of 1996 brought me to a very special museum in the heart of Moravia.

With Stramberk as our "headquarters" for our stay, we journeyed to the nearby town of Lichov—one especially familiar to Texas Moravians. It is there that Dr. Josef Simicek has led the establishment of a museum dedicated to tracing the descendants of all those who came to Texas in the late eighteenth century. Most of them came from within a 40-mile radius at the base of the venerated and mystical Radhost Mountain.

Three towns familiar to many Texas Moravians—Frenstat, Lichnov and Trojanovice—are nestled at its base.

Sunday, June 30 would quickly and unexpectedly become the highlight of this trip. As we were graciously welcomed by Dr. Simicek, my eyes fell upon a familiar picture of my late grandfather, Dr. John Kubena, who, like so many others, had settled in Fayetteville, Texas. He had been one of the founders of the SPJST. The exhibit chronicled the family history of the Kubena family since their arrival, in Texas and many articles noted the contributions of Dr. John Kubena to the history of Texas.

Other exhibits recognized several

families from the same area who had been fellow emigrants and later, neighbors in settling Texas. Most had come through Fayetteville, which became known as "The Cradle of Texas Immigration."

Dr. Simicek had another surprise in store for me. I was escorted to the original family home, No. 5 where Dr. John Kubena had been born. This beautiful little cottage had been freshly painted with flowers for my visit. A long-cherished dream had come true. The museum exhibit is named: "Hope Has Its Name— Texas," but it was this Texan's hope that was certainly realized in Lichnov that day!

I saw, with my own eyes, the Kubena ancestral home of my grandfather.

Many thousands of tourists are flocking to the newly resurrected Czech Republic and the beauty of its cities like Prague, Cesky Budejovice, and Brno, even as we did; however, few will experience the thrill and lifelong fulfillment of hope as I did, in the small museum just across from the Catholic Church in the small Moravian town of Lichnov.

I am very grateful to Rudy and Henrietta Klecka for their experience and the contacts they have developed all over the Czech Republic and especially in Moravia during their 30 years of travel there. They and Dr. Simicek made this moment in 1996 possible for me in a way no other could have. This was a very special year and tour indeed!

NOTE: Dr: Josef Simicek has just completed Volume One of a series of books that he is writing. The series is entitled The Pilgrims for Hope and chronicle migration to America from various Moravian villages during the last century. Volume One includes a brief history of the circumstances in Europe that led to the large numbers emigrating, a brief description of the area from and to which they came, and quotes plentifully from the family histories put together by their descendants in Texas, namely Frantisek Marak of Ticha and Frantisek Jan Spacek of Bordovice No. 2. Several emigration applications by early settlers are quoted, among them Johan Ermis, Valentin Miculek, Josef Janak, Jan Kahanek, and Ignac Babinec.

Volume One focuses principally on the emigrants coming from three Moravian villages: Mnisi, Ticha, and Vlcovice, and includes passenger lists by names of the ships on which they travelled to America. Also included are village maps, pictures of ancestral homes from which they emigrated, and a family tree (including birthdates) Jr the family which emigrated to America.

Book Three is listed alphabetically and the last section contains copies of the Arnost (Ernst) Bergmann letter written in 1890 and the Vincenc (Vincent) Silar letter written in 1852. Both of these letters were sent from Texas back to the homeland which resulted in more emigration to Texas. Mr. Strnadel located letters in the archives that were sent from Texas giving a valuable insight of conditions in Texas.

Kasparek Family Reunion The Kasparek Family Reunion of the descendants of Vaclav, Veronica and Anna Kasparek will be held Sunday, October 6 at the SPJST Hall in Fayetteville. 46th Annual Orsak Reunion In December of 1869, Joseph Orsak, with his wife, Apolona, and daughter, Anna, age two, left Karlovice Moravia, for Galveston, Texas, to settle in Fayetteville, Texas. Youth Letters Section District Two Reports on Camp Dear Readers, Fun, rain and action filled the air at Camp Val Verde for our District Two campers. Once again, camp was a wonderful success.

We began with junior camp which was enjoyed by all in attendance. This year, we had a few added attractions. One being rain for two days. I want to compliment each camper for your patience and participation during those rainy times. You were great indoor campers.

The highlight of our camping session was our Summer Olympics. Groups were divided to represent Czechoslovakia, Italy, Germany, and the USA. A torch was carried to each country with the torch and each country's followers reaching the home of Summer Olympics Val Verde USA. Olympic games included the egg toss, hula hoop race, balloon throw, slam dunk, long jump, balance beam, ice hockey, and the bob sled. Each game had a special or rather unordinary touch added. The ice hockey was a tennis ball swept around with brooms. The bob sled had to be the most favorite of all games. The sled was a large plastic tub with wheels attached to the bottom. Two team members, one inside on their knees and the other pushing, competed against other countries.

Campers really enjoyed this race; however, not quite as much as our guests. Yes, you did see the picture correctly, Gene McBride being "pushed around" by Leonard Mikeska and State Youth Director Joni Lange "pushed" by Dana Beckendorf. And yes, Gene would not?

Could not? Push Leonard around? I think it was the laughing and crying that delayed that start. Leonard and Gene, you were great sports. All Olympian eyes were upon you. Thank you for coming out. The cookies were delicious and everyone is still enjoying the water jugs.

We hope to see you next year. Winners received gold medallions, and ribbons for silver and bronze winners.

Campers also enjoyed the horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, archery, hiking, crafts, and games.

This year, we were so very pleased to have back with us our talented craft leader, Sherry McKenney of Lovelady. Campers enjoyed the making of bread dough flowers or creations of their choice and also stained art sun catchers. Sherry, thank you for all your ideas with the Olympics. We enjoyed you so much and look forward to seeing you again next year.

Our younger group of campers enjoyed the traditional shaving cream splash. This is always so much fun. I have not yet figured out how to get out of the way of the can.

A special recognition goes out to our super LITs. You all gave super care and showed great leadership to our campers.

The younger campers look up to you as someone very special and they are right.

You are very special. Thank you!

Leaders and chaperones, I thank you for your help, time and dedication to our youth. Of course, this camp would never be possible without you. A special thartic you to John Hoelscher, former camper, who joined us as a leader, lifeguard, and game instructor. The challenge games were great.

On to teen camp. We had a good turnout for our teen camp. It is so wonderful to see a group of teens from different schools and different backgrounds to bond as closely as District Two teens.

This year was a fantastic camp. We had many newcomers. Activities included horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, archery, crafts, and of course, those famous night hikes.

At teen camp, we also included Summer Olympics. These games were held at the swimming pool. The highlight was the different canoe races in the pool. Once again, tears filled the eyes from laughter of all around. Sinking the canoe in the pool was great!

Who says no one sleeps at camp?

Proof will show that girls sleep . . . and what happens? The girls found out the last night of camp. "Eight is Enough."

Eight guys, chaperones, saran wrap, and duct tape is all that is needed for a girls lock-in. The girls awoke to thinking they were being raided but realized there was no getting out of this one. Sorry, Janet and Carol! You guys did an unbelievable job.

Once the girls were rescued, did the "eight is enough" sleep? Maybe for a few minutes. Why didn't you guys lock up?

We might also want to ask Erin, who is that "real friend" that gave your swimsuit to David now. Who looks better in a two-piece? Skrabanek or Koslovsky?

We all had a super time. A special thank you to my assistant DYCs, Richard Greger and Janet Lyon. You both are always there and ahead of the game. I appreciate all your time, dedication and support. You are both great!

As you can see, District Two Camp was a blast. Campers, each of you are so very special. Camp is such a great opportunity to get to know each of you in a special way. I love each of you dearly and do hope you will be back next year.

Call or write me with ideas for next year's camp. To those of you who were unable to attend this year, please join us in 1997. We would love to have you.

Parents, we need you, also. Ask the chaperones who joined us. They have as much fun as the campers.

Dear Readers, The youth club is planning to go to Six Flags on September 29. I hope it is cool and pretty.

We will start on our rest home projects for Christmas. We will bring cakes to the rest home for the birthday party on the first Wednesday of October. There will be a Christmas ornament contest for the youth at the Fall District Meeting.

On September 1, I went to the District One swim party. I had a good time. It was fun.

Dear Readers, Our youth club attended the District One Swimming Party on September 1, 1996, in Bryan. There were a lot of members from all youth clubs there. We had a great time playing on the lily pads and riding the snake. We even got to go on the big water slide. After swimming for a while, we had pizza and soda water.

It was a lot of fun.

After the swimming party, our youth club took money that we had collected to the MDA telethon at the Hilton Hotel.

We met one of the hosts in the parking lot and he invited us in to be on television.

We were still wet from swimming, but we had a great, time on television and seeing how the telethon was put on.

Dear Readers, Our SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting on September 4, 1996. Our craft for the month was to make Grandparent's Day cards. It was a lot of fun.

Our charities for the month were books to the Bryan Library and HOME magazines for the FHA. We also donated money to the Jerry Lewis Telethon and even got to be on television.

Lekce jedenatficati—Lesson 31 Spelling and Punctuation In today's lesson, we are repeating part of a previous lesson, relating to correct Czech spelling and punctuation. The items touched on concern some of the most often-made mistakes by some of our Czech correspondents.

Use of capital letters: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English. Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1968.

Consequently, days of the week and month are NOT capitalized. NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is, names of persons, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations), titles of books, films, etc. take capitals.

Ex.: Karel Dvorak, Wilsonovo nadralf, Dunaj, Anglitan, Cechy, Smetanova opera, "Prodand nevesta", etc., and Nage rimsko-katolicka cirkev; Velika slovanskit podpurna jednota.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE—FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR—INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vam, Vag ; Ty, Tviij, Tob6. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Varn, they use a PLURAL VERB, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE ADDRESSING ONLY ONE PERSON. WRONG Vy, (1 person) jste veera jeli do mesta. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.

The pronoun ja is not capitalized: neither 'do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This IS done in English). Ex.: Mam eeskou ienu. (I have a Czech wife). Mluvime eesky. (We speak Czech).

One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas.

—before and after an adjective clause: Vgechen cukr. v gechna kava.

—before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile me uvidel, gel pry6.

Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec rekl synovi: "Pracuj a 0 se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the US is to use the standard English quotation marks— "").

American Czech Culture Society Promotes Multi-Cultural Day at State Fair The formation of the American Czech Culture Society in the Metroplex area some 55 plus years ago had as its main objective "To maintain and uphold the Czech heritage of our forefathers so that our future generations will be able to enjoy and perpetuate that heritage as a part of the American way of life."

(Quoted from the Constitution and ByLaws of the American Czech Culture Society.)

To that end, the ACCS sought out the State Fair of Texas as the place to gather as many people of Czech descent as possible on one day to celebrate what has come to be known as "Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas." For 55 years this has been a wonderful event with food, music, dancing and entertainment offered to our own communities as well as to all Fair visitors.

Last February, rumors began to surface that there would he no more "ethnic days" at the Fair; then an article appeared in the Dallas Morning News on February 19 which confirmed this rumor. None of the ethnic groups who had formerly had special days at the Fair would he allowed a place to gather.

At that time, ACCS president, Bertha Podhrasky, made contact with a group from the German community, and made arrangements for a meeting. The meeting resulted in each groups' decision to write a letter to the Star Fair officials seeking some information on the reason for the cancellations. The letters were ignored, but as a result, several other groups were contacted and another meeting was called for March 14.

A letter was drafted to ask for a meeting with State Fair officials, and signed by representatives of 25 fraternal/cultural/ethnic societies. This group, for lack of a better name, became the "Texas Cultural Partnership," consisting of German, Norwegian, Italian and Czech representatives. The Partnership received a letter from Errol McKoy, president of the State Fair hoard, ignoring our request for a meeting and emphasizing the courtesies the Fair had extended to us in the past.

Decision was made to meet again on May 16, but before that meeting took place, a reporter from the Dallas Morning News (to whom we had sent a copy of our letter) called several representatives of the Partnership to find out what was happening. After an article appeared in the Dallas Morning News.pn May 5 entitled "New coalition begins pushing State Fair to restore ethnic days"

and sub-titled "Officials cite traditions' cost; coalition considering next step."

McKoy then asked for a meeting.

Larry Laznovsky, Justine Yeager, Steve Ogden, Vincenza Biondi, and Ida Schulz attended this meeting with McKoy and Vice President Nancy Wiley in which the Fair apologized for the lack of communication the groups experienced in not being notified of the Fair's decision to cancel events. (No letter had been received by any of the groups until after the February 19 article in the Dallas Morning News. When notification was made, it came in the form of a memo with no letterhead, no date and no signature by any State Fair official.) At a later date, each of the groups received a letter of apology from the fair.

The Fair offered several venues for our special performances. They suggested that we might want to hold a function at the Hall of State, which the State Fair has no control over. We would be dealing directly with the Dallas Historical Society, who are caretakers for the Hall of State. They stated that the Fair would provide stages for activities, publicity (which had not been provided in several years), places on the calendar, etc...basically everything except a tent as before.

We would have to rent our "home place."

At the conclusion of the meeting, we invited them to a meeting of the Partnership on May 16, but they declined.

A few days later, this small group plus two other representatives met with Steve Parker at the Hall of State and discussed the possible use of the building and plaza on October 6, a date previously agreed upon by the Partnership. Rental fees were listed, rules and regulations regarding use of the building, etc. were agreed upon, and the date secured.

Since that time numerous meetings have taken place, plans have been made, and all is proceeding at a fast pace, since time is now growing short. The representatives of the ACCS have agreed to participate with the other three groups, and have pledged up to $1,500 to be used as our part of the presentation.
