The SPJST congratulates Sister Betty Martinek, who will celebrate her 97th birthday on September 24, 1996. She received her "Age 96" certificate last year entitling her to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments.

ster Si Betty Martinek was born in Williamson County, Texas on September 24, 1899. She was one of three children born to Anton and Frances Hess Martinec, who Betty Martinek immigrated to Texas from what is now the Czech Republic. Her sister, Millie Grove, and brother, Raymond Martinec, are deceased.

Born and raised in the country, Betty married Brother Charlie Martinec in 1916 in Ennis, Texas. They had two children, Anna Mae George and a son, Joseph who died in 1975. In 1919, the Martinek family moved from the Ennis area to a farm near Fort Worth. "It was a wonderful childhood," recalls daughter Anna Mae. "There was a lot of love in the house. There wasn't a lot of money, but we were rich because we had each other." Something else that the Martinek family valued was their membership in Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Both Sister Betty and Brother Charlie enjoyed the fun and friendship that grew out of frequenting dances at their local lodge hall. In his later years, Brother Martinek took a job as a steel worker in Fort Worth. He passed away in 1964. "I think back to when I was a little girl and the times I would just sit there and

watch her sew," says Anna Mae, recollecting her mother's patience. "She would piddle back and forth with the adjustments on the sewing machine until everything was just right. And all the while — very softly — she would sing." Strong in her faith, Betty continues to enjoy good health and lives in Fort Worth with her daughter. Although her arthritis keeps her from sewing and baking, it hasn't kept her from enjoying the close relationship that she has with her three grandchildren and great-granddaughter. In addition, she enjoys the company of her extended family that includes many close friends who affectionately refer to her as "Granny." She also enjoys reading and watching television game shows — especially Wheel of Fortune. Once again, the SPJST congratulates Sister Betty Martinek on achieving the Grand Age of 96. —SPJST-
