Olympics '96 Membership Drive For the next four months, it will really pay to introduce your friends and relatives to the SPJST. Beginning September 1, the Society's "Olympics '96 Membership Drive" gets underway. The program will run through December 31.

Under the program's guidelines, members who actively "recruit" members for membership become eligible for five levels of recruiter achievement awards.

They are as follows: Level One -- Five new members, $50 cash prize; Level Two — 10 members, new $100 cash prize; Level Three — 15 new members, $150 cash prize; Level Four — 20 new members, $200 cash prize; and Level Five — 25 new members, $250 cash prize.

Reports detailing cumulative totals will be published monthly in the Vestnik, enabling you to track your status in the membership drive. The prizes will be awarded January 31, 1997.

By participating in the membership drive, your lodge also becomes eligible for prizes. From October through January participating lodges will participate in a monthly drawing. The winning lodge will receive $100 to the charity of its choice and an SPJST clock to display in the lodge building (If there is no lodge building, a $50 cash prize will be awarded).

A special recipe form is also available from the SPJST Home Office or from your local lodge secretary.

`4i' Be A Part of History I had the chance to visit last week with Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin. Sister Anglin, you may recall from our last issue, is responsible for coordinating the collection of recipes and production work on the SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbook.

According to her, the initial response to the cookbook project has been excellent and the recipes are coming in from all parts of the state.

Recipes being submitted will need to be designated for one of the following categories: 1. Appetizers, Relishes and Pickles 2. Soups, Salads and Sauces 3. Meats and Main Dishes 4. Vegetables 5. Breads, Rolls and Pastries 6. Cakes, Cookies and Desserts 7. Beverages, Microwave and Misc.

Please type or print your favorite recipe on plain white paper and make sure to include the following information.

1. Your Name and Lodge 2. Name of Recipe 3. Category 4. Ingredients 5. Directions

In conjunction with our collecting recipes for the SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbook, Sister Anglin asked that we mention that there will be a design contest to determine what the image on the cookbook's cover will be. Entries will need to in some way depict the artist's vision of SPJST and its accomplishments during its first 100 years.

The following guidelines will apply: 1. The cover design must be 6 1/2" x 8."

2. The design must in some way incorporate the wording "SPJST — 100th Anniversary."

3. All entries must be received at the Home Office by October 1, 1996.

4. Entries being submitted will also need to be accompanied with a separate sheet listing the artist's name and lodge number.

5. When submitting the cover designs, please do not fold or bend.

The Minutes of the July 23, 24 and 25 1996, Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Held at the Home Office in Temple, Texas The regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST was called to order by Chairman of the Board Pokladnik at 8:30 a.m. with all members of the Supreme Lodge present.

6. The 30% advantage for active members penalizes non active members for something that is beyond their control. We have 114 lodges and only about 45 youth clubs.

7. The home office scholarship department has nothing to do with picking scholarship winners.

8. Colleges place more emphasis on SAT and ACT scores than on grade point averages in college freshman applicants.

9. She also felt that some of these guidelines would be the downfall of the scholarship program.

Chairman Pokladnik welcomed Editor Vanicek to the meeting. Chairman Pokladnik congratulated the officers and directors on their re-election and also the incoming directors. He stressed the Supreme Lodge members should work as a team and work for the benefit of all members.

Sister Wright-Rosenkranz expressed her concern that the new guidelines "pit active members against non-active members;" "setting up active consideration" in the scholarship program puts the Society in .a gray area with the IRS. We will have to remove the words "donations are tax deductible". Currently district, Merit and Royalty scholarship winners are not recognized at their high school awards ceremony. Sister Wright-Rosenkranz offered several alternative suggestions, including: Dissolving the District Scholarship Program and instituting a separate fund of up to 25 scholarships for active youth members, to be decided on the merit point system. And, adding a request for applicants to list their SPJST involvement in the current SPJST Scholarship Program, with no other changes.

Chairman Pokladnik thanked Sister Wright-Rosenkranz for her presentation.

After a lengthy discussion concerning the new developments in the scholarship program it was decided to notify scholarship donors that their scholarship donation may not be tax deductible. There was concern expressed that the scholarship program may be unrelated income due to the active youth being given more points in the selection process. Vice President Mikeska recommended reinstating the scholarship program to what it was before the Board's previous action and channeling $10,000.00 to a separate active youth scholarships for those who do not win in the general scholarship program.

Recess was taken from 2:50 p.m. to 3:05 p.m.

Financial Secretary Mikulas remained at the Home Office to answer any question that might arise.

President Leshikar reported of the scholarships applicants in 1995 there were 17 applicants who were active members and of those, only three active members did not receive scholarships. In 1996 five active members won scholarships and seventeen active members did not receive scholarships in the general scholarship program. Due to the scholarship program allowing 30% of the selecting process to be allocated towards active youth, advertising will need to be redone stating "the donation may not be tax deductible," and properly notifying the membership that active youths will receive more points in the selection process. The scholarship committee will need to be advised of the new criteria and an extra sheet will need to be added to the scholarship application.

Chairman Pokladnik made the following audit assignments: Securities: President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, Chairman Pokladnik, Director Kohutek, and employee Daryl Entrop.

Meeting recessed at 8:50 a.m. to allow the time for the audit and meeting reconvened at 1:00 p.m.

MINUTES - The minutes were discussed page by page. On page 114 under State Youth Director, there was discussion concerning the state-lock-in. It was brought up that in previous minutes the Supreme Lodge is to pay $500 only and the balance should be paid from district youth funds.

On page 116 under Foreclosures/bankruptcies/tax suits, the third sentence add "or guaranteeing" after the words "institution making."

On page 120 under District V, in the fourth line removed "held at Lodge 191 and the Children's Network."

Motion by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Broz to approve the minutes as corrected. Motion carried unanimously.

NEW BORN FRATERNAL BENEFIT - President Leshikar moved for the Board to grant the President and Vice President more time to work out the details of the New Born Fraternal Benefit and report their findings in the September Board meeting. Seconded by Director Bayer. Motion carried unanimously.

SCHOLARSHIP ACTIVE YOUTH GUIDELINES - There was a lengthy discussion concerning new developments in the scholarship program and what constitutes an active member for the scholarship program. President Leshikar presented some of the recommendations for determining an active member: number of years in youth club; number of summer camps attended; number of craft events entered; number of Royalty events entered; number of Youth Workshops attended; offices held at the local and district levels; and any accomplishments or achievements achieved.

President Leshikar reported an extra page will need to be added to the scholarship application for information on whether or not a member is active.

Employee Barbara Wright-Rosenkranz was welcomed to the Board meeting to voice her concerns about the future of the scholarship program. As the Scholarship program administrator Sister Wright-Rosenkranz presented the following information about the scholarship program: 1. A majority of scholarship applicants in 1996 have been members since birth.

2. The 139 applicants averaged $10,700 in SPJST insurance in 1996.

3. Almost every active member, if they have reapplied, win in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year.

4. In the current scholarship program we have not had a year, to date, in which all seven district scholarships were claimed.

5. This year we have received 10 to 15 calls of concern from lodge officers, sales representatives and members about the new scholarship proposal.

President Leshikar moved seconded by Director Vanek to add to the scholarship application a request for information on active participation in the youth department.

Motion carried unanimously.

ADULT SCHOLARSHIPS - President Leshikar presented a career adult reimbursement expenditures. This program would be awarded by drawing ten names from those submitted for a cash reimbursement of $100.00 towards books, fees, or tuition in a community college, high school, or university. The program would not be available to officers or employees of the Home Office and would be available only to members who are not attending school but are working.

President Leshikar moved to accept the career adult reimbursement expenditure program on a trial basis for two years. This program would award ten scholarships of $100.00 each. Seconded by Director Vavra. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Director Vavra, Director Kohutek, Director Hanus, and Director Bayer. Voting against were: Vice President Mikeska, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Chairman Pokladnik, Director Broz, Director Vanek, and Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. Motion failed.

100TH ANNIVERSARY - President Leshikar reported for the 100th Anniversary celebration, Vice President Mikeska will be in charge of a display depicting the past, the present and the future of SPJST; Financial Secretary Mikulas will be in charge of the food; Legal Advisor Kacir will be in charge of securing the speakers; SecretaryTreasurer Anglin will be in charge of the cookbook; and President Leshikar will be in charge of the music.

A discussion about other possible ideas for the celebration followed. President Leshikar is to bring information to the Board about a possible 100th Anniversary painting; ideas for entertaining young children and whether a band from the Czech Republic to perform at the 100th Anniversary.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR - State Youth Director's Lange's report was reviewed, She submitted a proposal for revisions for DYC's reimbursement.

President Leshikar moved to accept the following changes in reimbursement for District Youth Counselors and their assistants. The changes were discussed item by item.

1. Preparing District YAD - per diem allowance changed from two to three days.

EDITOR - Editor Vanicek congratulated the officers and directors on their recent election and presented his report to the Board.

SPJST member service directory has been well received but a more compact presentation format is being considered for this useful tool. Under consideration for other changes in the member services directory is selling advertising space to members, maps to local lodge halls and contact numbers for all active lodges, and a historical text.

6. DYC - Fall or Spring Meeting - lodging allowance for one day.

7. SPJST State Lock-In - per diem for two days.

Editor Vanicek presented some ideas to supplement ideas for the 100th anniversary celebration. Some of these ideas were purchasing exhibit space at the State Fair of Texas or other local celebrations, a commemorative poster, statewide billboard campaign and using volunteers to help iron out details and provide input into the 100th Anniversary celebration.

9. Delete Tuition and mileage to Longhorn Recreation Lab. Motion failed for lack of a second.

He also made reference to the emerging technology of the Internet and its related marketing potential for the Society. He encouraged Supreme Lodge members to explore new member services related to "going on-line."

After a lengthy discussion, in which Board members stated they wanted to increase the number of days per diem is paid by four days, President Leshikar moved to make the following changes to the recommendations:

SALES - Vice President Mikeska reported the number of applications submitted during the first six months of 1996 is the same submitted during 1995. The amount of insurance written and issued during this time was less than 1995; but the amount of earned premiums was $106,910.12 more in 1996.

3. Change LIT per diem allowance from one day to two days.

4. Change SPJST State-Lock-In - per diem for zero days.

ADVERTISING - After a brief discussion it was decided to select some commemorative items for the 100th Anniversary. The Board agreed for Vice President Mikeska to invite one of SPJST's advertising suppliers to the next Board meeting.

Motion failed for lack of second.

After a lengthy discussion Director Vanek moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska to approve the following changes to the reimbursement policy for DYC's travel expense:

STATE FIELD MANAGER - SFM McBride's report was reviewed. He congratulated the sales representatives for exceeding the goal of insurance written in 1996.

3. Attending State Youth Leader's Workshop per diem allowance stays at one day.

PAYROLL DEDUCTIONS - Vice President Mikeska reported on a payroll deduction program to assist lodges and sales representatives in enrolling new members.

This program would consist of selling our products to employees of small companies and having the premiums deducted from their paycheck and be sent directly to SPJST. After a local lodge approves and accepts the payroll deduction program for marketing, their sales representative will be properly trained. Director Vanek moved to authorize the payroll deduction type of marketing and for it to be put into effect as soon as the enrollment and authorization forms are developed. Seconded by Director Broz. Motion carried unanimously.

4. Attending LIT - per diem allowance changed to two days. (increase of one day.)

NEW PRODUCTS - Vice President Mikeska reported on working with Actuary Agee and the reinsurance companies to develop a new term product.

5. Preparing District YAD - per diem allowance change to three days. (Increase of one day.)

7. DYC - Fall or Spring Meeting lodging allowance for one day.

BY-LAWS - Bids from the printing of the By-Laws were received from Creative Communications Printing and PrintMaster. Invitations for bids had been sent to eight prospective bidders. After a review of the bids it was decided to award the contract to Creative Communications Printing at a price of $3,676.00 on motion by Vice President Mikeska. Motion was seconded by Director Bayer. Motion carried unanimously. The cover of the By-Law booklet would be textured white with the SPJST emblem printed in red and blue.

8. SPJST State Lock-In - no per diem

NEW LODGES - The following status report on new lodges was presented:

1. Assisting at State YAD per diem allowances stays at one day.

21 Preparing District youth Camp or looking over camp sites - per diem allowance stays at 1 day.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Klinkovsky's report was reviewed. The State Volleyball Tournament will be held November 16, 1996, at the Temple Recreation Gym. The gym is located across the street from the Home Office.

100 PENNIES SCHOLARSHIP DRIVE - The 100 Pennies Scholarship drive will take place from October 1 - December 31, 1996. The goal of this program is to raise $20,000 so that 100 SPJST Scholarships can be awarded in our 100th year. To enhance this drive and to give a little encouragement on increasing donations, those who donate $25.00 or more will have their name printed in bold when listed in the Vestnik.

INCENTIVE PROGRAM - It was proposed to create an additional incentive to include selling additional insurance to our members during the year of our 100 year celebration. The goal would be that each lodge must sell a minimum of 8% of the members an additional SPJST policy. If the lodge achieves the 8% they would receive $5.00 for each member taking out an additional policy. Modified whole life would not be counted towards the 8%.

STATEWIDE FAMILY PICNIC - The possibility of having a statewide family picnic was discussed. It was decided for the officers to review the proposal and present some ideas to the Board.

Director Kohutek moved, seconded by Director Bayer to begin taking applications for the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator. Motion carried unanimously.

Due to the decision to discontinue efforts to organize Lodge #203, it was agreed the members could transfer into area lodges and they would be counted as new members for the incentive program. Director Vanek moved to recognize at the incentive awards banquet and district meeting one or two members who worked towards organizing a new lodge or reactivating a totally inactive lodge. There would be a cash award of $300.00 to be divided between the members recognized as working towards the organization or reactivation of the lodges. Motion was seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion carried unanimously.

There was a discussion on ways to develop a program to work with local lodges. The Board went on record that for the next two years the President and Vice President would work with the lodges that do not have a sales representative; do not have a functioning fraternal program; or did not send a delegate to the 1996 convention and make reports to the Board on the progress made. Legal Advisor Kacir moved for a report to be made at every other Board meeting as to what progress had been, made with the lodges. Motion was seconded by Director Kohutek. Motion carried unanimously.

SOFTWARE PROPOSAL - Vice President Mikeska presented four different software proposals/NAIC illustration regulations that the insurance department had researched. It was reported by Vice President Mikeska that it is necessary for the Society to have in place software which will bring SPJST in compliance with the

Vice President Mikeska moved that he be given authorization to negotiate the purchase of software through Allen Bailey and Associates at an estimated cost of $30,000.00 and that he be allowed an additional $10,000.00 for software enhancements. As soon as the agreement is negotiated it is to be reviewed and approved by Legal Advisor Kacir and Actuary John Agee. Motion was seconded by Director Broz. Motion carried unanimously.

CALENDARS - The representative from Creative Communications was welcomed to the Board meeting.

The bids for the calendars were opened. Bids had been received from Main Printing, Creative Communications, PrintMaster and Woodward Creative. After a discussion it was decided to table until Thursday morning the acceptance of the bid until further information was available. President Leshikar was asked to have a representative from Main Printing present Thursday morning.

MARKETING - Vice President Mikeska reported on the success of the letter mailout in connection with the Senior Life Marketing strategy. The insurance department is planning a direct marketing approach for the Mod Term product, to the members between the ages of 25 and 50 or 55.

GOLF TOURNAMENT - Vice President Mikeska requested approval of the previously postponed golf tournament. The anticipated cost to the Society would be $1,200.00 for advertising, insurance for a hole in one contest, trophies and advertising items to be given away. After a lengthy discussion President Leshikar moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska for the President and Vice President to have more information for the Board meeting in September, about the feasibility for a spring state wide golf tournament. Motion carried unanimously.

ERRORS AND OMISSIONS COVERAGE - Insurance Representative Al Purifoy met with the Board to present information on Errors and Omissions coverage. This coverage primarily covers SPJST sales representatives the cost of defense on each claim for any errors or omissions and also covers the Supreme Lodge members and the home office staff. There was a discussion as to whether or not the sales representatives should pay anything toward the premiums of this particular insurance coverage. Director Broz moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, to charge the officers with reviewing the contract and if acceptable to purchase Error and Omission coverage from Mr. Purifoy. Motion carried unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved for the officers to study and decide on a fair formula for the sales representatives to help pay for this coverage. Motion was seconded by Director Vavra. Motion carried unanimously.

There was discussion about the possibility of SPJST doing their own self insurance for Errors and Omissions coverage. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved the officers should talk to Actuary John Agee about setting up a liability so SPJST could self insure in about ten years. Motion seconded by Director Vanek. Motion carried unanimously.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on the lodges that we had not received a listing of the lodge officers for 1995. The lodges that had not responded were lodges: 114, 151, 167, and 81.

990/990T - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on the lodges that had not submitted their 990/990T form for 1995. These forms were due to the IRS in May of 1996. A second notice will be distributed to each lodge that has not responded and each director will receive a letter of the lodges in his district that have not reported their 990/990T to the home office.

BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas distributed a budget listing all of the income and expenses for the first six months of 1996, comparing the budgeted amounts. At this time actual expenses to the budget are at 50% and income for the first six months has exceeded the budget by 2%.

FORECLOSURE/BANKRUPTCIES/TAX SUITES - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on loans that are in process of foreclosure, bankruptcies, or tax suites. He also gave a report on the loans pending for each district and what would be needed for the loan to be closed.

Legal Advisor Kacir requested the authorization to substitute advance Real Estate Mortgage Lending Institute seminar instead of the Real Estate Law. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to grant Legal Advisor Kaciris request. Seconded by Director Vavra. Motion carried unanimously.

CALENDARS - A representative from one of the printing companies who submitted a bid for the calendar was present to answer some questions. The Board decided to make some changes from the original calendar bid specifications since this calendar will be for the 100th Anniversary year. It was decided for the officers to work with the printer and explain what the changes were and return with the information for presentation to the Board at the next meeting.

INDEPENDENT AUDITORS - James Therrell from the independent audit firm was welcomed to the Board. He discussed the audit his company had completed in May for the SPJST. Mr. Therrell reported that they found no errors or corrections which needed to be made to the report which was submitted to them.

CONVENTION - The Board discussed happenings and observations of the previous convention.

LAM REPORT - President Leshikar reported from May 5 to July 10 1996, there were 553 Texans, 61 people from out of the State, and 42 people from foreign countries who visited the museum. The highlight was the visitors from the Czech National Guard.

LEGISLATIVE - President Leshikar reported that he and Legal Advisor Kacir had scheduled a meeting with three other Domiciled Society's to discuss the model code and some possible tax relief for our lodges. The meeting is to take place in Austin, Texas on July 30, 1996.

CONVENTION - President Leshikar presented letters from some of the delegates concerning the docking of one-half day per diem by the Convention Delegates. After a very lengthy discussion concerning options, it was decided by common consent that the delegates had made the decision and there was nothing that the Board could do.

A.M. BEST - President Leshikar presented the report from A.M. Best. It was decided to table the report from A.M. Best until the September meeting due to the lack of time.

A recess was taken from 2:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

VESTNIK - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the total Vestnik subscribers now stands at 9,697. A total of 89 non-members have paid their subscriptions fee prior to July 1, 1996. Subscription fee for non-members amounts to $14.00 a year.

Because of the cost of postage going up, the cost for mailing the Vestnik to non-members now costs between $14 to $20 a year. Financial Secretary Mikulas made a motion to increase the Vestnik subscription rate for non-members from $14.00 to $20.00 dollars a year, effective immediately. Seconded by Director Broz. Motion carried unanimously.

QUARTERLY STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas went over the quarterly statement page by page. This statement was mailed to the Texas Insurance Department.

Keith Gatewood was welcomed to the Board meeting. He expressed his concerns as candidate at the last convention about things that had happened at the convention that he felt was out of order such as salary increases for an individual not the position.

He suggested that in the future a handbook for first time delegates might be beneficial and also for all delegates to receive a copy of the order of the day.

President Leshikar reported that the President's Club would be meeting September 16, 1996, in Chicago and he asked ratification from the Board for him to attend.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to grant President Leshikar's request. Motion carried unanimously.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE - Vice President Mikeska presented a membership drive for the remainder of 1996 beginning August 1, 1996. The membership drive would be called SPJST Olympics 1996. There would be cash awards for members recommending new members who were approved; a drawing would be held monthly for lodges who assist in procuring new members; and the sales representative's name would be placed in a drawing each time a certificate for a new member is issued.

Director Bayer moved to approve the SPJST Olympics 1996 membership drive, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. Motion carried unanimously.

ADVERTISING - Vice President Mikeska reported the tapes which are currently being used on the radio spots need to be updated. He requested authorization for funds to have advertising tapes for fifteen, thirty, and sixty seconds created professionally. Legal Advisor Kacir moved to approve the creating of tapes with a cap of $1,100.00 and if more is needed it would have to be submitted for further approval at the next Board meeting, seconded by Director Vanek. Motion carried unanimously.

Vice President Mikeska reported one of our sales representatives sells long-term care policies. The company offered a 5% discount in premiums to members of a group

such as SPJST provided the Home Office completed and submitted an application.

Motion by Director Vanek to write the company that we will not object to their giving our members a discount in lieu of completing an application otherwise the officers are to research the company and policy and report back at next Board meeting. Seconded

by Financial Secretary Mikulas. Carried unanimously.

INVESTMENTS - There was a discussion and review of the real estate loans that were closed during the months of April, May, and June and the securities that were purchased and sold. Director Kohutek moved to accept the purchase of the securities bought and sold and the minutes of the Supreme Lodge Officers. Motion seconded

by Director Hanus and carried unanimously.

PRESCRIPTION SERVICES - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported that the prescription services of Scott and White has steadily been growing in the past year. In June of 1995, SPJST members had fifteen prescription filled, while in May of 1996 there were 35 prescriptions filled. During the past eleven months a total of 250 prescriptions were filled.

POLICY SERVICING/UNDERWRITING - Vice President Mikeska reported that our Universal Life product has within its design a broad range of options giving the holder a great deal of flexibility. Because it is interest sensitive, the best options for UL certificate holders can be impacted by changes in the level of interest rates. It is important that we provide the level of service needed to help our members evaluate the features of the certificate so that they are utilizing the UL certificate to its best advantages as their needs change and as interest rates change.

The first step of our pro-active UL service approach was to raise the level of understanding of the product by our field force. In addition to including this in our scheduled classes, most of our sales representatives have completed the Universal Life Basic's by Pictorial. Nearly 75% of our field force has completed this course. We have their testing of the course on file. We also had the special Master Class for indepth studies.

As a part of our pro-active service approach, we are working with Financial Secretary Mikulas to have USSI help us identify the following UL certificate situations to give -you the information to input the setting of UL service priorities and plans.

UNDERWRITING - Vice President Mikeska proposed that SPJST increases the amount of insurance that person ages 56 to 60 can purchase to $5,000.00 without a paramedical and to increase from $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 the amount that can be purchased by ages 51 to 55 without a paramedical. Director Broz moved to approve Vice President's request, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. Motion carried 4 unanimously.

Blood testing requirements were discussed and it was decided by common consent to table this request and return to the next meeting with more information.

Vice President Mikeska moved to grant" authorization to exceed the current retention of $50,000.00 by up to $15,000.00 more to allow for new senior life certificates, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas. Motion carried unanimously.

REAL ESTATE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on 25 delinquent mortgage loans of these loans seven are on a workout plan, ten are in bankruptcies/foreclosure/tax suit, two loins are deferred. Director Hanus moved seconded by Director Broz to approve Secretary-Treasurer Anglin recommendations on the delinquent loans. Motion carried unanimously.

Reserves anticipated for the losses on the mortgage loans based on the available information amounted to $22,000.00. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to accept the recommendation, seconded by Director Bayer. Motion carried unanimously.

REAL ESTATE OWNED - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported the REO 192 property is under contract for sale for $42,000.00. Director Pokladnik moved, seconded

by Vice President Mikeska, to ratify the sale of the property. Motion carried unanimously.

The loss reserves anticipated on the teal estate owned amounts to $12,000.00.

Director Pokladnik moved to accept the recommendation of Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, seconded by Director Kohutek. Motion carried unanimously.

REO - The status of REO #192 is unchanged.

SPJST LODGE 180 - President and Vice President of Lodge 180 visited with the Supreme Lodge Officers to discuss their real estate loan payments. The Supreme Lodge Officers suggested the lodge make interest payments only for the next three months and modify their monthly payments to $1,400.00 a month. This would give the lodge an opportunity to ease some of their financial difficulties at this time.

Director Broz moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to allow Lodge 180 to pay interest for August, September, and October of 1996, and modify their monthly payments to $1,400.00 a month. Motion carried unanimously.

INTEREST SENSITIVE PRODUCTS - The interest for the Universal Life product was discussed. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to leave the interest rate for Universal Life product at 7% through October 31, 1996. Seconded by Director, the motion carried unanimously.

The current Annuity accumulation period for Annuity I program is 5.25%. SecretaryTreasurer Anglin moved to leave the interest rate of Annuity I at 5.25% through October 31, 1996, seconded by Director Hanus. Motion carried unanimously.

The interest rate for Annuity II is currently 6.5%. After a discussion as to the yield that SPJST is able to invest their monies for, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to lower the interest rate for Annuity II to 6.25% through October 31, 1996. Motion seconded by Director Broz, and carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to lower the interest rate for the immediate Annuity to 6.25% thru October 31, 1996, so that it would continue to be the same rate as the Annuity II program. Motion seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas and carried unanimously.

INCOME AND EXPENSES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported expenses for 1996 compared with 1995 have increased approximately 10% and the income for the same period has increased by 16%.

LODGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on the incentive programs. He reported that one lodge had received the platinum level, one lodge has received the gold level, one lodge has received the silver level, four lodges have received the bronze level, eight lodges have received honorable mention, and ten lodges have received the first step level. These figures are based on new members.

ANNUITIES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported there are 1,615 Annuity I for the amount of $24,321,849.45. The Annuity II has 917 for $16,807,874.23. As of June 30, 1996, SPJST had a total of 2,523 Annuities for a value of $41,129,723.68.

Financial Secretary Mikulas requested ratification of a mail poll to hire a new employee in his department. He requested that the mail poll become part of the exhibits. Director Vavra moved to ratify the salary and hiring of Debra Trigg, seconded by Director Hanus. Motion carried unanimously.

IMAGING - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported we are running low on space for files and it will be necessary to either purchase more files or go to the imaging process. If we go to imaging all of the files will be on the computer and several people can access a file at the same time. Director Vanek moved to authorize Financial Secretary Mikulas to start gathering information and price quotes for the purchase of the necessary items for imaging. Seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion carried unanimously.

VESTNIK - Legal Advisor Kacir reported to the Board the first working draft of the contract and bid information for the Vestnik contract has been mailed to the Supreme Lodge members. He requested the members to review the packet sent to them and let him know if there are any changes that need to be made.

CALENDARS - Motion by Director Harms, seconded by Director Vanek to authorize the Officers to visit with Brother Marek from Main Printing and then accept the bid from either Creative Communications or Main Printing, which ever is best.

Motion carried unanimously.

DISTRICT I - Director Vavra reviewed a copy of a letter he had received which had been mailed to President Leshikar, State Youth Director Lange, and District I DYC, from a member of District I. The letter asked the Board to consider in 1997 to awarding the youth cash instead of trophies at the YAD. He also reported Burleson County Czech Heritage Society is in the process of restoring an old home.

DISTRICT II - Director Kohutek reported that there were about 200 entries at the District II YAD with Lodge 24 doing an excellent job hosting the event. He would like to see a job description of the Fraternal Activities Coordinator before anyone is hired. He reported that all of the securities at the bank and in safe keeping have been accounted for and everything was in order.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz thanked President Leshikar and State Youth Director Lange for attending District IV YAD. He also reported, he was trying to find sales representatives to represent the Lubbock, Vernon, and Wichita Falls area. Director Broz invited everyone to attend the Czech Festival at Rowena.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus reported on attending the lodge meeting at Lodge 196. He also reported that he has enjoyed the review the dance class presented at Lodge 88. He reported that he and Director Broz had audited the books and ledger and found everything to be in order.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek reported that he had made an age 96 presentation in Hallettsville. He had also attended the yearly festival of Lodge 97. He thanked President Leshikar and State Youth Director Lange for attending the District VI YAD. DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer reported that he enjoyed the Convention and congratulated all of those who were elected. He also reported on attending a 50 year presentation at both Lodge 107 and 202. He thanked President Leshikar and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Klinkovsky for presenting the 50 year pins at Lodge 93. He congratulated his two new sales representatives, one of whom is in Corpus Christi and one in San Antonio.

Director Bayer asked the Legal Advisor if the residential inspection report was a legal document and whether or not it had to be signed by all three members of the Investment Committee. Some reports were signed by two officers with a notation that the third officer was not in the office. The response was since the majority approved the loan, it was valid; but if possible all three members should sign.

8/VESTN1K—Wednesday, August 28, 1996 After a short discussion about when the effective date for changes to the DYC's reimbursement would begin, Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Vavra, to make the effective date January 1, 1997. Motion carried unanimously.

Director Bayer, Director Vavra, and Director Vanek reported on their audit of the vouchers. It was questioned as to why there had been checks paid for the State Youth Lock-In. President Leshikar reported that the districts were being billed for the amount that they owed. President Leshikar was also questioned as to why the Youth Rule books do not use binders with loose, leaf pages. President Leshikar responded that with the wide distribution of the book to parents, youth and leaders it is impossible to monitor the distribution of revisions. It was pointed out that the sales department uses loose leaf binders and it works without any problem and saves the reprinting of the entire book.

The audit committee inquired of the president about charges on a credit card. A report is to be given to the directors at the next meeting.

The audit committee reported employees are furnished at least two major credit cards for automobile expenses. These cards should be used for all automobile expenses and receipts for the charges should be attached to the credit card statements.

Audits of the district's books are done at the spring meetings with a copy of the district youth department's audit being mailed to the Home Office. The results of these audits should be furnished at the following board meeting.

Distict Five Family Fun Day September 22 at Lodge 139, Danbury Dear Members and Guests, The District Five Family Fun Day will be September 22, 1996, at Lodge 139, Danbury. Registration for the contestskolache, needlework (handmade), horseshoes, and youth Christmas ornaments— is at 11 a.m.

The youth will be selling items in their booths. We will have a short meeting at 11:30 a.m., followed by a social at noon and a covered dish meal from 12 to 1 p.m. The meat and drinks will be furnished by the district.

All you have to bring is a covered dish, pastry or door prize for the spin wheel. Sister Clara Broz and John Broz from Lodge 88 will be in charge of the spin wheel. If you cannot make plans to come, you can leave your items with her at Lodge 88.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of two of our deceased brothers, Leslie Sakewitz and Arthur Cross. Leslie was a very faithful member. He had been in a wheelchair for almost a year. I know it was a hardship on him and his wife Louise, but he very rarely missed a meeting. Arthur Cross was an active member until illness overcame him and his wife.

May our dear brothers rest in peace.

Fay Kohutek was our visitor. We always enjoy having her. Please come again.

Frank Sevcik is still on the sick list.

We wish you a speedy recovery.

The minutes, treasurer's report, and all committee reports were approved.

Dear Members, Lodge 17 held its regular monthly meeting on August 11 at 5 p.m. with all officers present except FAC Sefcik.

Resolutions were read for deceased members Harold Matejowsky and Johnny Kramer. We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the friends and loved ones of these members.

Youth Leader Skrabanek gave her report on District YAD and State YAD. She also stated that they will be having a slumber party.

Dear Readers, Before our meeting, we had guests Diane Wessels and Gladys Peterson from Sprint Telephone Company to present to us all the new features which you can have with your telephone.

We then had the meeting which was called to order by Bobby Hoelscher. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing in silence for our deceased member, Ben Tyroch. He was a faithful worker in our lodge through the years and we wish to express our sympathy to his wife Gladys and his sons and family.

The minutes were read and all the reports were given.

We are proud of all the youth members who participated in the YAD. We especially want to congratulate those who won in District Two and then those who won in State. All the winners will be announced in the Vestnik so read about them and let them know we are proud of them.

Accepted into our membership were Deborah Rose Long and Spencer Goode Long. We welcome you into our lodge and we hope to see you all at the activities of our lodge.

50-Year Pin PresentationSet for September 9 At our next meeting on September 9, 1996, we will present the 50-year pins to our members. We will have a short meeting and program acknowledging our members who will be honored. Snacks will be served following the program.

We hope all of our 50-year members and their families can attend.

We discussed the October 19 fund raiser. We are selling the tickets already so if you wish to purchase a ticket, contact one of the active lodge members.

Plans for the barbecue cook-off were discussed. The karaoke night is Friday, November 8 and the "odds-and-ends" sale is Saturday, November 9 in connection with the cookoff. Youth Leader Kay Kovar reported on the youth activities and she thanks the lodge for the SPJST t-shirts that they got when they went to District Three Camp.

New members of the youth club introduced at the meeting were Jerrod Ryan and Blake Ryan.

The financial reports were given by Treasurer Kay Kovar. Both reports were approved.

New members accepted included Deanna L. Caviness, Shawn R. Graham, Victoria K. Motley, Joshua K. Zapletal, Logan C. Adams, Johnia N. Massey, Paula D. Stroud, Larry Stroud and Matthew Stroud. We welcome each of you and look forward to your attendance at our meetings and participation in our activities.

The FAC report was given by Margaret Krajca. Nominations for Fraternalist of the Year and forms must be at the Home Office by November 1, 1996. The 100 Pennies Drive will begin October 1 and the 1997 SPJST Scholarship application requests are accepted from September 1 through December 31, 1996. Those members who have requested applications during that period will have until February 1, 1997, to complete their application and turn it in to the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

The goal is to provide 100 scholarships in conjunction with our 100th anniversary.

The guidelines for the local lodge Czech language classes were reviewed.

This program is designed to promote the Czech language and the Czech heritage to

small groups.

The used eye glasses are still being accepted and I would like to thank all who had donated so far, especially Katie Omeliha for the eye glasses she sent by Kay Lynn.

A polka festival report was given by Janet Patak. The committee met on the first Monday of the month at the SPJST Lodge 25 dining room.

Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard Reports on August Meeting Lodge

Dear Members, Another month has passed and it is time again for Lodge Karel Jon g to hold its monthly meeting. It will be held on the second Sunday, September 8 at 2 p.m. in the meeting room on the ground floor of the SPJST Hall building at 106 Leveridge Street.

The agenda will be open to business needing immediate attention and will follow the established order of business.

A standard fare fraternal hour buffet luncheon is scheduled to start after the business meeting.

August Meeting Report On the second Sunday, August 11, the monthly meeting convened on time with a quorum present. All reports were accepted as given. Several motions were made and passed. One was the voting in of a new member. At this time, the name is being withheld until the policy is delivered.

Another motion dealt with the investigation into the possibility of starting a Czech language class at our hall. This task was given to our Vice President/FAC Brother Glen Kominsky.

The fraternal hour buffet luncheon had enough food and liquid refreshments donated whereby everyone present could eat all they wanted.

On another subject, it was learned by this writer that the Czech National Cemetery Association of East Bernard will hold its annual meeting on the last Sunday in September, the 29th, at 2 p.m. in the meeting room of the East Bernard Branch of the Wharton County Library on Clubside Drive.

Lodge 47, Seaton Member Barbara Wilson Opens Art School in Temple Artist Barbara Wilson, a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and a graduate of Temple High School, is back in town. She recently inherited the house where she grew up and converted the dwelling into a studio where she teaches others how to draw and paint.

Ms. Wilson, who specializes in children's portraiture, has shown her art in many galleries and juried exhibitions throughout the U.S. An exhibit of her work will be on display at the Civic Theatre in Temple during the month of September.

"I can teach anyone to draw and paint . . .," says Ms. Wilson, who established the Wilson School of Art in Denton, Texas in 1982. "It takes no previous skills or training."

Ms. Wilson received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of

North Texas in 1979 and has taught at Selwyn School in Denton where she also chaired the Art Department. In addition, she has taught art to adults and young people through various workshops and summer programs, including a series of classes for Indian children in Vera Cruz, Mexico. She has also lectured on art to students at Texas Christian University and North Texas University.

"I'm looking forward to making Temple my permanent home since all of my relatives and friends live in and around the area," says Ms. Wilson.

Temple artist Barbara Wilson encourages others to explore their artistic abilities. The biggest benefit of art lessons is the confidence that it helps to develop.

"Not only does it show them that they can draw and paint, but it helps self-esteem tremenously," she explains.

Janet Kaiser read the minutes and gave the treasurer's report. She also read the list of 50-year members. We will honor these 58 members in our October meeting. She also read a letter from the Home Office on the cookbook that will be published next year for our 100th anniversary.

Albin Machu gave the entertainment report.

We enjoyed having you all.

Jerry Tallas gave the property committee report. He thanked everyone that helped at the clean-up day. Charles Wagner read a list of all the repairs and cleaning that was done.

El Campo-Hillje SPJST Lodge 40 held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, July 17, 1996, at 7 p.m. with ten members and guests present. Our July meeting was very short.

President Rita Vanek presided and led the pledge to the flag followed by a moment of silent prayer for our ill and deceased members.

Ardis Bacak read the minutes. They were approved as read.

Charlene Borak, our youth leader, reported that at YAD in Victoria, Ross Juranek placed first and second place.

Sharon Borak was awarded the District Six Youth Achievement Award. Sharon was also the emcee. Congratulations, Ross and Sharon, for a job well done.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The August regular lodge meeting was held on Sunday, August 11, 1996, at 2 p.m. with Lodge President Calvin Skrabanek in charge. Flag Bearers Jessica Kirby and Janet Baca brought in the flags and lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag. We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Sister Lydia Kotrla who passed away on Thursday, August 1, 1996. May we honor her memory forever and deepest sympathy to the surviving family.

We had two young ladies, both 95 years young, at this meeting. They were Sister Theresa Chlapek, whose birth date is August 9, 1901, and Sister Albina Mikeska, whose birth date is April 14, 1901. They sat together and talked. I should have taken a picture for the Vestnik, so said Frank Klinkovsky. I had a camera along but did not even think of getting it out of my purse. We even sang "Happy Birthday" to my mom. Many more years to both of you.

Those that we knew that had been hospitalized recently were Jimmy Pechal, double knee surgery; Edward Mihatsch, hip surgery; Georgia Sodek, back surgery; and Adella Coufal, heart surgery.

Johnny Hruska was omitted in the July report. Sorry about that. I learned that Mary Zavodny had been in the hospital since the meeting.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives and we considered Frank Klinkovsky present although he was in Hallettsville on Supreme Lodge business.

She also read the minutes of the previous meeting which were accepted.

Correspondence included a thank-you for the graduation gift from Melanie Koslovsky and for the special recognition at the lodge meeting; a letter from

Brother Howard Leshikar, Supreme Lodge President, regarding the Czech language allocations for the lodge if we have the lessons (anyone interested in these should contact Calvin or Dolores Skrabanek for the scheduling of the 15 hours of instructions); and a letter from Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer requesting recipes for the 100th anniversary of the SPJST commemorative cookbook. See the back page of the August 14 issue of the Vestnik for full details and the contest for designing the cover of this cookbook. Let's all respond to this project, as this will not occur again in our lifetime.

The reports of the officers followed.

President Skrabanek thanked all the chairpersons for their continued devotion to their lodge and especially to Edwin Pechal and Henry Janacek for opening for the dance when he attended the Beseda and Royalty competition at the Mayborn Convention Center. He also asked for volunteers to help at the special back-toschool dance with the Debonaires playing on Friday, August 16.

Vice President Edwin Pechal thanked all who helped with the Fourth Annual Barbecue 'Cookoff. Anything you did was deeply appreciated and to the 24 teams who participated, thanks and we will do it again next year.

Second Vice President Ruth Hanusch wished the 95-year young ladies many more years of life and to continue to come to the meetings. She reminded us of the District Two Fall Meeting to be held at Lodge 29, Taylor on Sunday, September 15 with the fun time carnival and the contests of quilt and kolaches and the Christmas ornaments for the youth.

Silent auction items to benefit the youth programs will be appreciated. The lodge incentive program is lagging behind. So if you have prospects for new members, please inform a sales representative and let's, get rolling. We are to nominate a "Fraternalist of the Year" in the October meeting so be thinking of a nominee.

There will be a membership drive announced soon and prizes will be awarded monthly. Watch the Vestnik for full details. Lodge 189, Bryan is sponsoring a golf tournament on September 22 and Lodge 92, Fort Worth will have a tarok tournament on August 24.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek stated that she was a judge for the Beseda Competition at State YAD. Treasurer Lucy Mihatsch gave her monthly report as did Gladys Marek, financial secretary.

All chairpersons gave their reports.

Youth Leader Ginger Greger gave her report with 25 members, two visitors and three adults present. Vice President Jeff Faichtinger presided at the meeting.

There were some winners at YAD and the district camping was attended by four LITs from Lodge 47 and several campers.

A clean-up or workday was set for August 24 at 8 p.m. Hope that many came to help with the needed repairs and general cleaning needed periodically.

The electrical special wiring on the outside was postponed until next year.

The decision on the lodge's annual picnic will be forthcoming. A new refrigerator for the kitchen was discussed and those on the committee are Edwin Vasicek, Edwin Pechal, James Skrabanek, Woodrow Marek and Frank Klinkovsky.

The one in the kitchen will be placed in the annex and a chest-type freezer is to be purchased for the annex, also.

49, Rowena Reports on August Meeting

Lodge

The quarterly meeting of Lodge 49 was held on August 7 in the lodge hall with Elizabeth Walther presiding.

District Four Director Stanley Broz reported on the recent convention. Lodge 49 members congratulated Director Broz for being elected for another four years.

Lodge 49 gave a donation to the Rowena Lions Club for a new water pipeline that will be installed between Ballinger and Rowena.

The District Four Fun Day will be here in Rowena on September 21.

Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. and continue until 11:30 a.m. A meal will be served at 12:30 p.m. Then bingo and other games will take place throughout the afternoon.

The Ballinger American Legion donated a United States flag to our lodge on Flag Day. We want to give a special thanks to the American Legion in Ballinger.

Door prizes were given.

The meeting adjourned and refreshments were served.

54, West Reports on June Quarterly Meeting Lodge

The second quarterly meeting of Lodge 54, West was called to order by President Ted Kocian on June 1, 1996.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, everyone remained standing for a silent tribute in memory of Sister Delayne Pustejovsky Massirer who died on April 2 and Brother Walter R. Marek, who died on May 18.

In the absence of Recording Secretary Anne Emery, President Kocian called on FAC Maxine Sefcik to read the minutes

of our last meeting. These were accepted as read.

FAC Maxine Sefcik gave the following report: new youth members are Kaitlin Nicole Crawford, Brandon L. Dornak, Heather L. Holt, Jennifer L. Prnka, Gabriel M. Shebesta, Joshua C. Shebesta, Maya Shebesta, Jessica A. Vrba, and Ryan D. Vrba. These were signed up by Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza.

New adult members are Stephanie Michelle Emery, signed up by Sales Representative Max Reynolds and Edith L. Kral and Annie E Hlavenka, signed up

by Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza.

We are very happy to have these new members.

Annette Joyce (Bartosh) Prnka transferred from Lodge 35, Elk to Lodge 54.

We welcome her membership.

Additional insurance was issued to Freddie Kaluza, Janice Kaluza, Raymond Kral, and Ryan M. Volcik. All of this business is credited to Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza.

The 50-year SPJST members will be honored with a reception on June 30 at Lone Star Hall. Honorees are Raymond Cervenka, Irene English, Ella J. Marek, Pauline S. Marek, Helen Ruetten, and Adolph Volcik. Supreme Lodge president Howard Leshikar will also be present for the occasion.

Sister Julie Holacka, age 96, will be honored with a reception on July 28 at West Rest Haven for outliving her insurance policy. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar will also be present at the event.

An official report from State FAC Frank Klinkovsky advised our lodge that we have acquired 11 new members through April 30, 1996. We sincerely thank our sales representatives for this effort.

Local lodge officers, namely Johnnie Krizan and Robert Dobecka of Lodge 6, Al Marchak and Lucille Price of Lodge 36, Freddie Kaluza and Ted Kocian of Lodge 54, witnessed the signing of the Proclamation for Flag Day in West by Mayor Russ Willsey. The picture and proclamation appeared in the West News, dated June 13, 1996.

Among the members graduating from the local schools were Jan Vaculik, Jr. to junior high and Lindsey Kolar to senior high. West High School graduates include Hayden Holecek, Paula Kapavik, Karen Mynar and Sharon Mynar (twins), Teddy Mynar and Eric Polansky.

Another member, Stephanie M. Emery (my granddaughter) graduated from Vicenza American High School in Vicenza, Italy. Kelly Suzanne Holecek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Holecek of Waco was our only 1996 recipient of a $500 SPJST scholarship. She graduated from Reicher High School in Waco. Our congratulations go out to these young folks and we wish them a happy and prosperous future.

Evelyn Reynolds of the Audit Committee reported that the lodge books were audited and all were found to be in order.

The FAC report was accepted as read.

Treasurer Freddie Kaluza gave his report which was approved as read.

Vice President Terry Sefcik who was a delegate to the SPJST Convention in Arlington was among one of the recording secretaries and he also reported on the highlights of the convention proceedings which proved to be a very informative and educational experience.

President Kocian mentioned that Sokol West is interested in remodeling the lodge building. Raymond and Lil

Matus reported Sokol West gave their reasons for the necessary renovations.

The building structure is not large enough to accommodate large crowds for weddings and other large functions. The rest rooms need to be modernized and moved to the front area of the building. Copies of the new-look structure were distributed.

Brother Freddie Kaluza suggested that Sokol and Lodge 54 members sponsor benefit activities to build up funds for this project. He suggested that letters be mailed to each member advising them of this plan.

Lil Matus suggested that names of $100 donors be displayed on a plaque at the main entrance to the hall.

President Kocian announced that a called meeting of officers be held and another meeting will be held with Sokol members regarding these plans.

The next lodge meeting was set for Friday, September 6 at 7 p.m. with a social and a guest speaker following the social.

Judy Bohannon won the door prize.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Following the meeting, Frank Podsednik, local VFW Commander, with Robert Zahirniak and James Gerik gave an informative and interesting presentation on the American flag. We appreciate their efforts as well as their presence.

This concluded our scheduled activity.

I want to thank Maxine Sefcik for taking these minutes for me while I was away. I really enjoyed my trip to Europe.

The highlight of my trip was attending the high school graduation exercises in Vicenza, Italy. The ceremony was held at Teatro Olimpico which is the oldest indoor auditorium in the world. My son Steve, Stephanie's father, and I made the trip together and we visited Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and France. We took a cruise on the Rhine River which was great. The only problem we had there was that it was a French cruise ship and very little English was spoken, but with our limited use of the French language, somehow we managed. We also took some English-speaking tours of Rome which were very interesting.

Lodge 66, Waco Reports on Special Dance At the special dance at Lodge 66 Linden Hall in Elm Mott on Sunday afternoon, August 11, the music was great, refreshments were cold, and the youth club manned the kitchen, serving those delicious hamburgers. The DJ, John Swanner, had a great selection of polkas, beautiful waltzes, and country music and he was glad to play any special requests. Everyone enjoyed the music, dancing and visiting.

John will be scheduled to play at a later date on a Sunday afternoon from 2 to 6 p.m. So if you missed the good dancing and listening music by DJ Swanner, do make plans to attend the dance which will be from 2 to 6 p.m.

Please watch for the announcement of the date coming up soon. The bar and kitchen will be open and the public is invited.

80, Holland Reports on August Meeting

President Harold Rohde called the monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, 1996. The membership joined in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silence for departed members.

Secretary-Treasurer Glenn Latham read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read.

Brother Latham read a letter from the Czech Education Fellowship Foundation at Texas A&M University. After some discussion from the floor, G.L. "Pee Wee" Brisbin made a motion to make a donation to the foundation, seconded by Elwood Bell.

Christopher Martincka-May was accepted as a new member.

Brother Latham stated all committees were doing fine from all reports turned into him. President Rohde asked the membership about the use of the hall by the Holland Little League Association for the upcoming banquet on August 18, 1996. The membership agreed to furnish the hall at no charge to the association.

Those celebrating birthdays in August were in luck that day. Calvin and Doris Eckermann and J.D. "Pete" Coker all had birthdays at the meeting and received their complimentary six-pack of their choice; but, when it came time for the door prize drawing, all three were winners again! This was a first that the membership could remember—all the birthday winners were also door prize winners.

Oh yes, Eddie Kunz and Della Horelica also won a door prize but neither one was celebrating a birthday in August.

The next meeting of Lodge 80, Holland will be Sunday, September 8, 1996, at 2 p.m. Please note the different Sunday due to the Labor Day weekend.

Sunday, July 21, 1996, was the date of our last monthly meeting and dinner.

Thirty members and guests attended the function. Guests included David and Victoria Zwahr. They are the son and daughter-in-law of Lloyd and Annetta Zwahr. We were happy to have them and they are welcome to come back anytime.

Lodge 84, Dallas Invites Members . •. to Activities Great news! The Kaluza Band was a hit on August 3—not September 7—my error. They will be back.

You missed a very enjoyable day if you did not attend the picnic at Sid and Justine's on August 11. The weather was beautiful and the food was delicious.

Games were played all day. We were also entertained by the ducks and geese on the lake and coming inland to be fed.

They were fascinating to watch. Our thanks and appreciation to our host and hostess for the delicious food served and a day of fun and fellowship.

Linney and Nat Gonzales. It was a beau tiful wedding and reception. Barbara is our youth leader and Nat has been here working in our Blue Room for many years. There were at least 500 members and guests who attended. We all hope their lives together will be very happy.

At our monthly meeting, we cut the ribbon on our new building. Willie Wehring and the Building Committee did a great job. Willie was here everyday during the construction. He said he knew where every nut and bolt was in this building. We held our meeting in the building and it is really nice.

Coming up on September 23, the Men's Club is having a Fiesta Dinner.

Tom Marsh, president of the Men's Club, is selling tickets.

Plans are already being made for our Czech Day on October 27. We will be serving turkey and dressing and will be having the dance. There will be more information coming in my next letter. It will be a fun-filled day.

A special Sunday afternoon dance on August 25 was scheduled at the lodge.

Helen and King Hegvvood have been in California. They were visiting their sister-in-law who is very ill.

Flo Orsag was in the hospital. But she is at home and doing fine now. I hope all our members will stay well.

Something I Have Learned I've learned that warmth, Kindness and friendship are the most yearned for commodities in the world. The person who can provide them will never be lonely.

Kindness done is never lost. It may take awhile, but like a suitcase on a luggage carousel, it will return again.

Be sure to read the calendar section in the Vestnik to find out what is going on in your lodge. Lodge 92 will not have the Wednesday country/western dances, but there will be country/western dances on Sunday. Also there will be polka dances, so watch for the dates.

Thanks to the members who prepare the meals after the meeting as they are really appreciated and good, too.

92, Fort Worth Reports on Youth Club Activities Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, The August 11 meeting was one of those that was very informative. The committees gave their reports so this time I will write about our youth club.

They have started to have more new members attending. So Brother Gordon Hubenak and Assistant Sherri Watkins have several plans for the future. 92, Fort Worth Sets Czech Heritage Day for September 21 Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, My last letter was mostly about our youth club. I hope you enjoyed it as it is interesting to see what our youth club is doing. This is what the future of the SPJST is and what your local lodge needs.

Here it is getting close to our Czech Heritage Day in Fort Worth on Saturday, September 21. This is about the only large activity that we have to help promote money for our lodge. This is quite a day as there will be some type of entertainment starting at noon. We will have the famous Risky Barbecue with all the good stuff that goes with this meal. The meal is always tender with tasty beef and sausage.

There will be dancers with beautiful costumes and lots of the Czech krojs made in Europe and also krojs made by the ladies here in the United States that we are always proud to watch parade around the hall. Then, there will be the popular Czech polkas and waltzes played by the two good bands. They will keep you humming and dancing. One band will play in the evening and the other will play about 8 p.m.

The Ladies Circle of the lodge will have the pastry booth and the chairperson will be Monalee Hattendorf. She will be asking the ladies to bring different types of pastries. Florence Greer is the President of the Ladies Circle and she wants to thank you in advance for the donations of the pastries.

In a past letter, I said that we have drawing tickets for cash prizes. They are now on sale and are six tickets for $5.

There will be a drawing during the day for different prizes. So please buy several books of these tickets to win the cash prizes and other prizes. You do not have to be present to win the large prizes but you do need to be present to win the small ones. 139, Danbury Honors 50-Year Members

The August 7 meeting of Lodge 139, Danbury was held at EJ's Restaurant.

Three members were honored for having attained 50 years of membership in the SPJST. Edward Lubojacky of Alvin, Vincent Hechler and Lonnie Lostak, both of Danbury were presented with 50-year membership pins. The presentation was made by Secretary Lorenda Baldwin. It was noted this was the largest number of members to receive their 50-year pins from Lodge 139 in one year. The honored members and their spouses were treated to a dinner of their choice.

The meeting opened with Flag Bearer Wesley Baldwin bringing in the flag and the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

There was a discussion of the plans for the September 22 District Five Family Day which will be held at the Danbury Park and will be sponsored by Lodge 139. Watch for the specific details in an upcoming Vestnik.

After the dinner, members stayed on to socialize and enjoy each other's fellowship.

154, Fort Worth Reports on August Meeting

Dear Members and Friends, Our meeting was called to order by our President Brother Jerry Milan. He led us to the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of our deceased Sister Mary Krupka Botik. May she rest in peace.

Our Secretary Sister Mary Renfro was attending a Renfro Family Reunion, so we did not get her report. Sister Anna

Johnson, our treasurer, gave her report, which was approved.

Youth Leader Sister Mary Steinman Hargis reported 13 youth members attended the youth camp with Sisters Julie Pritchard and Carol Sanders and they were so excited trying to tell all.

They also attended the YAD in Temple.

The youth club officers will have a workshop on August 24.

Brother Rome Milan finished his duties at the Olympics and returned home on August 7. He brought Brother Tal and Sister Lesli Milan back with him. That was Tal's second trip.

Brother Frankie Milan is an AFA Chief of Fort Worth and has been a baseball chief for years, so he and Sister Martha attended the baseball competition for four days at the Olympics. This weekend they will be leaving for Stratford, Connecticut, for the Women's National Fast Pitch.

Brother Bobby Clevland, Sister Carolyn Clevland and daughter Carrie Ann attended the closing ceremonies.

They all arrived home safely and said it was wonderful.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, September 8 at 3 p.m. Brother Jerry Kucera will join us. After the meeting, we plan on a meal. Meat will be furnished and sisters are asked to bring a covered dish, and let's try to get new members.

I will be leaving for St. Louis on Saturday, August 17 for two weeks, so I will make it back in time for the meeting.

We extend our congratulations to Brother Michael and Kim Mason on the arrival of their son, Connor.

The meeting adjourned to refreshments and fellowship.

Coast Czech Festival Set for Sunday, October 20 at Lodge 172, Pasadena Gulf

The Tenth Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival is Sunday, October 20, 1996, at SPJST Lodge Rozkvet, No. 172, Pasadena, located at 3609 Preston Avenue in Pasadena, Texas. 177, Academy Reports on August Meeting

Lodge

Louis Driska, President, called the August meeting to order on August 11, 1996. All members stood and recited the Pledge.

Libbie Bartek reported no one on the sick list. She reported two sympathy cards were mailed to J.C. and Linda Johnson and Irene Johnson.

Louis Driska recognized his daughter, Melba Mitchell, and his granddaughter, Beth, who were visiting from Oklahoma.

The roll of officers was called with the following absent: Vice President Bill Hutka, Secretary Kathy Fritz, and FAC Joanne Smith. Janet Lyon presided as second vice president.

One new member was reported by the name of Michael Ware. Michael was accepted into our membership.

Chairperson reports were given and approved as read.

Karen Bartek, youth leader, presented the poster the youth club made for YAD. Janet Lyon reported on the results at State YAD. She stated the scrapbook won sec-

ond place at SYAD and it would be presented at a later meeting. She reported the youth did good. Otis Beck recognized Karen Bartek and Janet Lyon for all their hard work with the youth club., President Driska informed the members that June Stewart from MDA has asked the lodge for a donation. She stated that it costs $250 per person to go to Summer Camp. Mrs. Stewart said a $350 donation would entitle our lodge name to appear every hour on television.

J.C. Johnson made a motion to donate $350 to MDA and it was seconded by Alex Garcia.

President Driska read a thank-you card from SPJST Lodge 177 Youth Club thanking the lodge for the $250 donation for the trip to Astroworld.

President Driska presented the Convention picture and it will be framed and put in the lobby.

Butch Lyon reported that Lodge 177 youth club had went on the District Two trip to Astroworld on August 10 and everyone had a good time. He stated everyone was very prompt on their return to the bus. Janet Lyon reported that it was late when everyone got home Sunday morning and that the youth club's attendance was low at the Sunday meeting.

Jonna Bartlett was a new member this year and was welcomed to our meeting.

Hope you will be a regular member.

President Driska invited everyone to eat ice cream after the meeting.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Lodge 179, Warrenton met at the Warrenton Store on Thursday, August 8.

A social preceded the meeting. Games were played and winners were Alfred and Gladys Baack, Leroy Levien, Dr. Flinn, Doris Eckermann, Loraine Kneip, Greg Eckermann, Lydia Peters, and Matt Eckermann.

Greg Eckermann was the birthday celebrant of the month.

We had a short business meeting in the absence of our secretary.

Members enjoyed fried chicken after the meeting.

Our next social and meeting will be September 12 at 7 p.m. followed by a chicken-fried steak meal.

182, Falls County Reports on July Meeting Lodge

The Falls County SPJST Lodge 182 met in the Lott Volunteer Fire Department building on July 28 with the call to order by the president and the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

The minutes from the last meeting and the finance report were both read and approved.

Then the report of the youth picnic on

July 13 was presented. We had a good attendance even with the prospect of more rain showers. The youth and some of the adults played games. Then refreshments were served by lodge members.

There were grilled hot dogs and fixins and barbecue brisket prepared by Mr. and Mrs. Komar with fixins and sweets and plenty of iced tea and soda pop. See what you missed by not coming to the picnic!

Other youth activities include three members who attended LIT Camp— Dana and Jason Beckendorf and Becky Treat. Some youth members went to District YAD at Cyclone with Youth Leader Judy Treat and her husband, Curtis. Some also went to State YAD in Temple with the youth leader. Six members also went to camp. The youth leader Judy Treat went from Tuesday through Friday with the younger ones. The three LITs stayed from Friday to Sunday.

We discussed plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas family get-togethers of members and the projects we would like to do. With adjournment, we had refreshments and for the next meeting on August 25, we will have a pot luck meal.

The poem "I'm Fine—Really, I'm Fine" sent in by Kathy Trefell is great. It refers to most of us seniors. It gives spice to our lives.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The treasurer of the lodge and the hall gave their reports and they were accepted.

Circle of Czech Women Reports on August Meeting Dallas

Our August meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky.

Alice Roberts led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our member Dorthy Reznik; Mrs. Frank Taraba, aunt of Vicki Kohn; and Bessie Carper, mother-in-law of Theresa Carper.

Bertha was welcomed back from her visit to Brno, Czech Republic. She welcomed 28 members, nine men guests, and two visitors, Hattie Brown and Mary Brown Lockhart, guests of Martha Patak.

It was good to see everyone since we had a vacation in July.

Correspondence read by Evelyn Trojacek included a thank-you card from George Reznik and family for the donation to the American Cancer Society in memory of Dorthy Reznik; a thank-you card from Bill and Marie Lattner for their 50th anniversary card and money gift; a thank-you card from the American Cancer Society for the donation in memory of Dorthy Reznik.

Bertha Malik, membership secretary, reported all members have paid their dues.

Georgia Brozek of the Sunshine Committee sent a sympathy card to the family of Dorthy Reznik; a sympathy card to Vicki Kohn; get-well cards to Lillian Moran, Theresa Carper, Millie Noska, and Olen Reed, husband of Hattie Reed.

Announcements Helen Oates gave us a report of the Czech Culture Society meeting. She stated they were working with the Texas Culture Society to organize an Ethnic Day at the Fair on October 15, 1996. The next meeting is August 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Sokol.

No meeting of the Sister City was scheduled this month.

News of Members Alice Roberts gave a report of Mary Sebestik and she was improving from her surgery.

Bertha Podhrasky gave us a report of her trip to Brno, Czech Republic. She really had a good time. Bertha took the doll Mrs. Fitz donated to the Krouzek.

She said three women made the kroj while she was there. All of the labor and materials were donated by the City of Brno. The doll sure is beautiful. Looks like she is about to dance the beseda.

Thanks to Florence Peressenyi. She translated in English the copy by Ella Mae Faraizl of the first meeting of the Krouzek, dated 1935. The meetings were conducted and written in Czech when they started. We all got a copy of the minutes.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Toni Sebetka Marek, August Vrana, Leon Kucera, Dorothy Strunc, and Miles Strunc.

Secretary Linda Trojacek read the minutes and Acting Treasurer Sylvia Laznovsky gave the financial report.

Both reports were approved as read.

The sunshine report was given by Stacie Hejny as follows: get-well card and money gift was sent to Sister Louise Vlacilek, sympathy card to Sister Alene Sebetka Skrivanek and family, birthday card to Sister Hattie Lekar, who is unable to attend our meetings.

Our sincere sympathy is expressed to Sisters Emilie Harrison, whose uncle August Vrana died recently; Libbie Wisniewski, whose sister-in-law Bernice Wisniewski died recently in South Bend, Indiana; Alene Sebetka Skrivanek and family, whose sister died recently. We extend our sympathy to the families of Leon Kucera and Dorothy and Miles Strunc.

A quilt was quilted for Sister Linda Trojacek.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to August birthday celebrants.

Sister Anne Zvolanek furnished the door prize. The lucky winner was Lillie Kosarek. It was good to have Sister Bertha Podhrasky back. She and Julius returned from a trip to the Czech Republic. They visited relatives and friends who served them lots of good food and wine. The people there are always so gracious and serve such delicious meals.

Sister Sidney Bridewell, her two daughters and grandson have returned from a trip to the Czech Republic. She said that her family enjoyed visiting relatives and seeing the scenery and how happy they were that they were able to go.

Sister Libbie Wisniewski is proud to announce the arrival of her great-greatnieces, Mary Margaret, Rose Claire, and Elizabeth Eleanor Karczewski. That makes Libbie a great-great aunt. Frankie is a big brother. Proud parents are Mr. and Mrs. Victor Karczewski of South Bend, Indiana. From one to three little ones is quite a bunch. They will have plenty of playmates.

Our next meeting will be September 12. Mark your calendar. Sometimes it is so easy to forget, especially when there are so many things to remember.

Worth Friendship Club Reports on August Meeting

We missed Roy Alholm who has been a big help with different duties and a special thanks to those who filled in. Roy was in Chicago visiting with his son, Tony and family. Afterward, he was attending a FINN Fest in Marquette, Michigan, with his brother. Get home safely.

We were happy to hear Frank Tesar was recently released from the hospital after a long stay and is in the home of his daughter, Mary Ann Krivanek and family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I will be leaving August 17 for St. Louis but plan on being back in time for the meeting. I lost my sister on January 5 and have a niece and nephew and their families—now my only immediate family. I will continue to visit them as in the past 61 years. I feel so lucky to have the Milan family looking out after me, as I want to continue living in Fort Worth.

Czech Festival Set for October 27 The last Victoria County Czech Heritage Society news was incorrect in stating the date of the Czech Fest. The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society Czech Festival will be held at Sun Valley Ranch on Highway 87, north of Victoria, on October 27, 1996.

Reunions Pavelka Reunion

Trojacek

The 42nd Annual Pavelka Reunion will be held Sunday, September 1, 1996 at the SPJST Hall in Elk, Texas beginning at 11 a.m. Lunch and supper will be served. If you plan on attending the meals, please bring enough food for your family. Games will be played as in the past. You are asked to bring game prizes.

The dance which is open to the public will begin at 8 p.m. with music by Apache Tears.

The descendants of Joseph, Wesley, John, Frank, Anton Trojacek, Annie Krajca, and Mary Chapek will hold their reunion on Sunday, October 6, 1996, at the SPJST Lodge 25 Hall in Ennis, Texas, starting at 11 a.m.

Each family is asked to bring enough prepared meat, vegetables, or salad and dessert for his or her own family. A meal will be served around 12:30 p.m. A small fee will be charged to cover miscellaneous supplies, such as plates, plasticwear, cups, tea, coffee, ice, and the rental of the hall.

Vaclav and Marie Hanus Descendants The Tenth Reunion of Vaclav and Marie Hanus Descendants will be Saturday, September 14, 1996, at the fire station in Skidmore, Texas.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. The cost will be $5 for families and $2 per person.

Lunch will be served at 12 noon.

Supper will be served at 5 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring a meat, a vegetable or salad and a dessert. Coffee, tea, bread, plates, cups, napkins and cutlery will be furnished. You may bring other drinks if you wish.

We will also be helping Edna Bohac celebrate her 90th birthday which was August 9, 1996.

Jakub and Barbara Holub Family Reunion The Second Jakub and Barbara Holub Family Reunion has been set for Saturday, October 19 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Ascension Parish Hall in Moravia, Texas. All descendants of this Holub (Hollub) couple are welcome.

Dear Readers, District Two Youth Achievement Day was held on Sunday, July 14 at Lodge 24, Cyclone. What a wonderful day this was for all in attendance. Lodge 24, Cyclone, you were fabulous in hosting this very important event. Thank you to all members. A special thank you to Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny for all the time and hard work put into this day. The hall was decorated so beautifully. This year's meal for YAD was sponsored by the Cyclone Youth Club. Thank you parents and members who prepared the meal. It was delicious. Talent of every kind filled the hall. Everyone in attendance enjoyed such variety of crafts, royalty and talent.

We were honored to have four royalty contestans, 31 individual talents, ten group talents, four scrapbooks, three posters and 197 craft entries.

To all contestants, I am so very proud of each of you. Thank you for your time and hard work to make this day so very successful.

Thank you, parents! Your love and support for these youth is so rewarding.

Youth leaders, thank you for always being of such wonderful assistance. This day would not be possible without you, nor would it have run so smoothly. You are definitely the backbone to the great success of our District Two youth program.

Michael Morris of Lodge 47, Seaton, once again, my compliments to you as emcee. You always make the day a delight and so enjoyable.

Representing District Two this past year with such beauty and manner was District Two Queen and District Two Miss SPJST Allyson Holman of Lodge 187, Round Rock. Dear Readers, Lodge 9 had their meeting on August 7. We discussed the YAD and who won at State. We also discussed our country store and raffle prize drawing on August 25.

Ms. B.J. Hegemeyer from the Burleson County Sheriff's Office was our speaker. She talked to us about the D.A.R.E. program.

Amy, Kimberly and I and John Michael and Lindsay Anderson brought the crafts. We decorated glass jars with beans. We will also sell them at the country store.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Snook Youth Club had their monthly meeting on Wednesday, August 7. We had a big attendance and Travis Janner was our visitor. We discussed our country store and raffle tickets sale set for August 25 at the Snook Volunteer Fire Department Barbecue. Every member is to bring ten craft items to our country store. We also discussed our Grandparent's Day program on September 15.

The youth club also set the date of August 17 to go see a movie in Bryan.

Our charities for August are $1 per member for the Jerry Lewis Telethon, canned goods for Brazos Food Pantry and paper towel and toilet tissue rolls for the pre-kindergarten class at Snook School.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 4 at 6:30 p.m.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club Reports on Meeting Speaker Dear Readers, Our August 7 meeting for Lodge 9 was excellent for all the youth in our lodge. Our guest speaker was Mrs. B.J. Hegemeyer who spoke to us about D.A.R.E. We had a visitor, Travis Janner. The craft that we made was beans in a bottle. The Gaas' sang us a poem. Jess Junek brought some ice cream floats for refreshments.

9, Snook Youth Club Reports on August Meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, On August 7, 1996, the Snook SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting.

We opened the meeting with our pledge. . For old business, we discussed District YAD, State YAD and camp. Several members participated in these events.

For our charity projects, we collected old ties, toilet paper rolls, cereal boxes and canned foods. We also each donated $1 to the Jerry Lewis Telethon. We also discussed new business and upcoming events including the Kolache Festival and Burleson County Fair. We are also planning a trip to the movies for August. For our craft, we made bean bottles.

After the meeting, we had ice cream floats and practiced our Czech songs for the Kolache Festival.

We hope to see everyone at our next meeting.

9, Snook Youth Club to Meet September 4 Lodge

Dear Readers, The Snook Youth Club had their monthly meeting on August 7. We had one visitor, Travis harmer.

We had a lot of things to discuss. Our senior group talent won at District One YAD and went to State. We did not win at State. At State, I participated in science/education and the special category.

I won second place in special category.

We are planning to go to the movies on Saturday, August 17 and we are getting ready for our country store on Saturday, August 25. We are also selling raffle tickets. We also have a lot of charities and community services planned.

After our meeting, Ms. B.J. Hegemeyer talked to us about drugs. It was very interesting. Thanks, Ms. Hegemeyer.

We also made decorated jars with different colored beans in them. Then we cooled down with a soda float. Thank you, Mrs. Susan Junek, for the soda floats!

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 4 at 6:30 p.m.

A Queen's Notebook Dear SPJST Readers, I would like to thank everyone from District Five and also the other SPJST members who came to the Royalty Contest and supported me.

For those of you who do not know me, I am Karen Bender, the 1996-97 SPJST State Queen. My parents are E.J. and Jeanette Bender and my sisters are Kristen and Krystle. Krystle is the State Duchess. We are members of Lodge 88, Houston.

My grandparents are Alvin and Tillie Linhart from Sugar Land and my great-grandfather is Julius Gaidusek from New Caney.

My grandparents and great-grandfather are all members of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

I am 16 years old and a junior at Stafford High School in Stafford, Texas. My sister, Krystle, is 12 years old and in the seventh grade at Stafford Middle School.

It is still like a dream that I have won this honor to be the SPJST State Queen, and I am looking forward to traveling around the state promoting the SPJST and our Czech heritage. What a great year this will be—the 100th anniversary of the SPJST. I plan on keeping in touch, through letters to the Vestnik. Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club Reports on August Meeting The August meeting of Lodge 17 Youth Club was called to order at 3:30 p.m. by President Mindy Suehs. Flag Bearer Lacy Jones led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. The roll was called and we had 17 members present and 12 adults. There were also nine guests present.

The minutes were read and approved.

Vince Morehead gave the treasurer's report. We then talked about our appreciation banquet and what we were going to serve. Our youth leader Susan Skrabanek talked about State Royalty and State YAD. She also mentioned to us about Grandparent's Day. Youth members enjoyed having candy bars and chocolate chip cookies for refreshments. Refreshments were served

Fund raising plans for this month are selling hamburgers at the barbecue cookoff.

This month's social was bowling at Sunny Bowl on August 18 or August 25.

The charity project for this month was mailing gifts for the rest home.

Our youth leader Carol Tallas reported on Tom Watt, the District meeting in Taylor on September 15 and the Christmas Ornament contest.

Youth members enjoyed having cookies and punch for refreshments.

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas announces a soon-to-be released publication entitled Emigration to Texas from the Mistek District between 1856 and 1900

by Drahomir Strnadel. The book contains nearly 3,000 names of Czech emigration from northeastern Moravia in the Czech Republic along with historical data describing economic conditions and procedures needed to petition permission to leave their homeland for Texas.

Hundreds of families in Texas will find this book most helpful toward locating their ancestors from that region as an estimated 80 percent of the Czechs can trace their roots from there. A total of 57 villages are listed.

Inspired by the late Albert J. Blaha, Sr., founder of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Drahomir Strnadel of Trojanice secretly obtained this valuable research information from the archives over a ten-year period in order to help the Texas Czechs in their quest toward tracing their ancestral roots.

Originally published in Czech in three separate volumes, Mr. Strnadel presented this valuable information to the Czech Heritage Society of Texas in October, 1989. The Victoria Chapter, one of 14 in the state, agreed to prepare it for publication and distribution. The three books were combined into one volume. The history section was translated into English. Every effort was made to keep the text in its original form for the sake of authenticity. It was put together by Marjorie Matula of Victoria, Chairman of the CHS Board of Trustees, who has had over 20 years of experience in doing family history research. This is her fourth publication to complete.

Emigration to Texas from the Mistek District contains 207 pages, 8 1/2-by-11.

The book is hard-bound in a deep green cover. It also contains 92 pages of histo-

ry which includes 20 pages of original documents from the archives, six maps from the 18th, 19th, and 20th century (one of the maps is in color) and ten illustrations by Pavel Strnadel. Book Two is indexed. Book Three is listed alphabetically and the last section contains copies of the Arnost (Ernst) Bergmann letter written in 1890 and the Vincenc (Vincent) Silar letter written in 1852.

Both of these letters were sent from Texas back to the homeland which resulted in more emigration to Texas. Mr. Strnadel located letters in the archives that were sent from Texas giving a valuable insight of conditions in Texas. Other records further revealed conditions in Moravia which resulted in a large influx of emigration.

The significance of this publication cannot by overemphasized. One like i has never been made available containing the history and names of so many emigrating from a particular area in Moravia.

Czech Language at Tarrant County Junior College Once again, this fall the Czech language beginner's course is being offered at Tarrant County Junior College at the Northwest Campus. It is located at 4801 Marines Creek Parkway in Fort Worth, Texas 76170. Classes begin on Thursday, September 10 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and ending October 16.

There is also a Senior Aid Program with Czech classes beginning September 12 and ending November 14. These are beginner's classes. These Senior Aid classes are Tuesdays from noon to 12:50 p.m.

The School of Independent Learning at the University of Texas presently offers two courses in the Czech language.

Czech 506 and Czech 507 are designed to help beginners develop proficiency in understanding, reading, writing and speaking Czech. By using the texts, study guide, and cassette tapes, students are able to study at home according to their own schedules. Upon completion of each course, the student earns five hours of college credit. Both courses have recently been redesigned by Dr. Kevin Hannan.

Alvin Community College to Offer Conversational Czech Intermediate Conversational Czech will be offered by the Continuing Education Department of Alvin Community College on Tuesday nights from 7 to 9 pm. from September 17 to November 19. The class will meet at Pearland High School at 3775 South Main in Pearland.

Students of Czech descent as well as any interested persons are welcome to register for this non-credit course.

Conversational Czech has been taught at ACC since 1973. Czech language instruction fosters awareness and understanding of cultural pluralism in Texas.

To further this understanding, the class will learn Czech geography, culture, arts and food. The history and contributions of Czechs in Texas will also be presented.

The instructor for Conversational Czech will be Bernard Pivonka, who has a degree in history and Czech from the University of Texas in Austin.

There is no tuition for this course. It is

funded by the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST).

Lodge 88, Houston Czech Class Begins September 16 To All Past, Present, and Prospective Interested Czech Language Students, We are pleased to announce that noted Czech Language Instructor William E. (Bill) Souchek will be teaching his thirtyfourth class or instruction course of the Czech language.

Classes resume at the SPJST Lodge 88 at 1435 Beall Street in Houston, Texas, on Monday, September 16 and every Monday thereafter (except every second Monday - lodge meeting night), for another ten class presentations, ending with the final class on Monday, December 2. Fall Czech Classes at Austin Community College The following Czech classes will be offered this fall: Conversation Czech I CSC-2-322-040 is being offered for the student with little or no background in the Czech language.

Emphasis is on vocabulary, pronunciation, and beginning conversation. No prerequisite is required. Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Reagan High School. Class begins September 3 and continues for seven weeks for 21 hours.

Conversation Czech II CSC-3-763-040 is a continuation of Czech I designed for students who have some knowledge of Czech or completed Czech I. Emphasis is on improving vocabulary, basic sentence structure, and speaking skills. Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Class begins in October .
