Tim's plans are to attend Temple College and Texas A&M University where he will pursue a degree in Environmental Design through the College of Architecture.

Lisa is a member of Lodge 177, Academy and a graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Elem. Education). She is the daughter of Gene and Linda Barnes and the granddaughter of Myrtle and Felix Barnes, and Ann and George Connorty.

She plans to expand the operations of Lisa's Dance Connection, a Temple dance studio which she has owned and operated for the past six years.

Valerie is a member of Lodge 30, Talton and a graduate of El Campo High School. She is the daughter of Bobby and Anita Roye and the granddaughter of Vlasta Krpec and Richard and Billie Jean Roye.

Valerie plans to attend Texas A&M University where she will pursue an Agribusiness degree.

SPJST sales reps receive NAFIC production awards Two SPJST sales representatives were recently cited by the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors (NAFIC) to receive production awards based on their 1995 performance.

Helen Hegwood of Lodge 88, Houston, was cited as a member of the Two Million Club on the basis of producing $2 million or more of life insurance volume with $20,000 or more of first-year Helen Hegwood earned commissions.

Evelyn Mikeska of Lodge 196, Houston West, was cited as a member of the One Million Club on the basis of producing $1 million or more of life insurance volume with $10,000 or more of firstEvelyn Mikeska year earned commissions.

Since the first FIC designation was first awarded in 1937, the privilege to put these letters behind one's name has been a hallmark of professionalism for sales representatives and home office fraternalists. The FIC designation is the acknowledged standard of fraternal field education, demonstrating a commitment to ethics and providing career development and professional recognition.

"Receiving the FIC designation is highly commendable," says Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska., who likewise holds the FIC designation.

To qualify, a person must pass a series of three examinations based on the study courses entitled Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. A candidate for the designation must also meet certain experience and ethical requirements as well as be sponsored by his or her society.

Candidates for the designation may be either sales representatives or members of the home office staff.

Readers Write Twenty-Seventh SPJST Convention After-Thoughts First, I want to thank the SPJST lodges No. 92, No. 154, No. 180, and No. 183 for hosting the convention and the Howdy reception. It was wonderful. I am sure glad that you all provided buses for us to get to Lodge 92. I know that I would not have found the lodge because the bus driver got lost going there.

Also, thanks to the Supreme Lodge officers for making all the arrangements.

The banquet was wonderful and enjoyed by all. The Supreme Lodge workers did a good job of setting up everything.

The Convention got off to a slow start.

We were to take pictures at 8 a.m. but due to a rain delay, the pictures were postponed until 10 a.m. Then, about the time we got started, we had a fire alarm and had to leave the building for about 30 minutes. We started the meeting again for a while then took a break for dinner.

Coming back to the convention, we had another fire alarm. Maybe this had some effect on the convention because this one convention was disorganized—the most of the eight conventions that I have attended. The delegates would not listen to the chairman or co-chairman for instruction. Delegates were informed that they had three minutes to speak on an issue and two minutes to offer a rebuttal, if it was their motion. Some would talk longer and some would talk up to three times on the same issue. Then some were not allowed to talk because they were not delegates but they were members on standing committees. But later, the chairman said that members on standing committees could talk on issues.

SPJST is a fraternal organization, but what was written in the Vestnik (prior to convention) and how the delegates conducted themselves, you did not see fraternalism. Some wrote to do away with committees, have an age limit, office workers not to serve on standing committees, and change SPJST Society to a stock company. Then, during the convention, pamphlets were passed out to the 'delegates on how to convert the SPJST Society to a stock company. Later, a delegate read the pamphlet on stock companies. Reading literature that is destructive to the SPJST Society should not have ever happened.

The by-law on office workers serving on standing committees was voted down.

But I think since the office workers are lodge officers, district officers and delegates, they also work hard to promote SPJST Society and they are fraternalists.

The delegates deprived them of their equal rights. There would be only one office worker to a committee and six other committee members on one standing committee. This would effect only one district and that would be District Two as that is where all office workers live.

I served on the Finance Committee for several years and I would he glad to work with office workers. They should have equal rights. When the committee meets in a closed door session to gather information, we do not discuss the issues with anybody else but the committee members. But you know the old saying, "walls have ears," and committees leak.

After we would finish meeting on Sunday evening, I would leave Temple and return home. Boy, I am sure glad they raised the speed limits so I could get home before the phone started ringing. They were calling wanting to know if we discussed this and that. News gets out fast.

The minutes of the convention got the contents left out what a person said because delegates questioned the secretaries about the content.

I wish they would have had the minutes tape recorded.

Supreme Lodge officers and directors, you got lots of work to do.

First, get the 100 years anniversary all set up for July, 1997.

Second, set up a workshop on how to conduct meetings and the use of by-laws.

Third, restore fraternalism. If you are going to preach fraternalism, practice it.

Fourth, if there are violations of the by-laws and a person is warned and does not abide, suspend them.

Fifth, if there is a problem and settlement cannot be made, let the members know and do not just sweep it under the rug.

Yes, it has been nice working with all of you officers and I enjoyed it Then, last but not least, the District Five caucus. This was a mess. No one wanted to listen to the chairman.

Everybody wanted to run it their way.

But the funny thing the delegates that wanted to do away with the committees, they ran for office, but let's have fraternalism.

Oh yes, I declined the nomination for Finance Committee. As of December 31, 1996, I will give up holding District Five office and serve on committees. After 40 years of doing this, it is enough and I want to thank you, members of District

SPJST Offers Cash Allocations for Czech Language Preservation Are you aware the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) is interested in preserving the language and the heritage of our Czech people from all across our great state of Texas?

We are once again proposing for consideration that universities, colleges, high schools and local lodges who are interested in offering a class to teach the Czech language may apply for a grant of monies to help toward this endeavor.

If your school, university or lodge plans to have a Czech language class this fall and you are interested in-a grant from the SPJST, please request a form for Czech language allocations.

Yes, there are stipulations. You must meet a minimum goal of students to nessesitate the cost of a teacher for this project.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood Reports on July Meeting We had our meeting on Friday night, July 12 with a meal before the meeting.

Our president Johnnie Krizan could not be present so our vice president Robert Dobecka called the meeting to order. The pledge was recited by all present. All the minutes were read and approved. We had 24 members present with two guests, Jerry and Dorothy Kucera.

A moment of silence was observed for Doug Uptmore and Irene Schiemez.

Birthdays in July were for Peggy Dobecka and Robert Dobecka.

Five dollars plus a gift was won by Christine Svrcek. Ernest Kutscherovsky (not present) won $10 and Brenda Kramol is (not present) won $3.

Peggy Dobecka reported all the awards the youth club had won at YAD. We had our picnic on Sunday, July 21 and we had a marvelous turn out. George and I would like to thank everyone who showed up to work. It was great how everyone pitched in. Thanks again!

Our trustee meeting will be Friday night, August 9 at 7 p.m. and our meeting will also he Friday, August 9 with a meal before the meeting at 6 p.m.

The fraternal hour buffet luncheon had enough food donated that there were seconds available.

An experiment by Brother Glen Kaminsky, our vice president/fraternal activities coordinator, is working out well. He started a morning kaffee klatsch for some of the persons who get together for coffee and breakfast between 6 and 7 a.m. at the local eatery. On Wednesdays, this eatery is closed and this group would meet at the Methodist Church fellowship hall on these days. The church sessions went on hiatus for the summer so Brother Kaminsky thought the void could be partially-filled with the use of our meeting room. The membership agreed to this.

He has had a good turnout.

Dear Members, We are now on the downhill side of the year which started with the July meeting and the August 11 meeting will see two-thirds of the year gone by: How has this year flown by!

The August monthly meeting will start at 2 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street on the ground floor of the SPJST Hall building.

Only business needing immediate attention will be allowed on the agenda which will follow the standard order of business.

A fraternal hour buffet luncheon is scheduled to start after the business meeting.. A standard fare will he followed.

July Meeting Report On the second Sunday, July 14, the meeting convened with a fair quorum present. The secretary/treasurer was late in arriving due to the conflict between the starting time of 2 p.m. of the meeting and her job quitting time which was also at _2 p.m. Added to this was a distance of 20 miles to the meeting site. Therefore, the reading of the minutes was set aside until she arrived. Two motions were made and passed to take care of business. One of these motions admitted Karrie Preisler as a new member. We welcome her to our lodge. An extensive report was given on the Twenty-Seventh Convention.

It was reported that Brother A.A. Blahuta had passed away on Saturday, July

er's report. She also read a thank-you note from Amber Terry. She was thanking the SPJST for the $500 scholarship which she had received.

Transferring from Round Rock was Tracy Betak. Transferring to Granger was Frank J. Mikulencak.

We discussed and voted to start having a polka dance the first Sunday of each month. Albin Machu will be in charge of booking the bands.

The lodge does catering jobs of 150 people or more. Michael Kaiser said that any smaller jobs, like from 50 to 150, he would be glad to do.

Door prizes were won by Gertie Safarik, Donna Pasemann, and Ronnie Rieger.

The next meeting will be August 9 at 7 p.m.

I will be attending Texas A&M University at College Station with your help. This scholarship was very special to me as my grandmother, Gladys Veit of Lodge 10, Shiner, presented it to me at Calhoun High School's scholarship day in Port Lavaca. My grandfather, Robert Veit, also of Lodge 10, Shiner, was also present.

54, West Schedules Benefit Fund Raiser Lodge

A benefit fund raiser for Lodge 54, West and Sokol West will be held on Sunday, August 18, 1996, with a delicious fried chicken and sausage dinner.

The cost of the dinner will be $5 for an adult plate and $3.50 for a small plate.

This includes fried Chicken, sausage, plus trimmings, drink and dessert. Plates to go will be available.

The benefit dinner will be held at Lone Star Hall, 1200 North Davis in West.

Serving will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

All proceeds will go toward the renovation of Lone Star Hall, sponsored by Lodge 54 and co-sponsored by Sokol West. Any donations toward this project will be greatly appreciated.

84, Dallas Invites Members to Activities Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Lodge 84, Dallas has had a very busy year and it continues on. So I will share some activities yet to come and hope we will be seeing you at all of them.

On August 11, there will be a picnic at the lake home of Sid and Justine Pokladnik. The time will be from 10:30 a.m. to around 6 p.m. Barbecue and the trimmings will be served. Members, please bring desserts; also, bring cold drinks and chairs for yourselves.

Directions to the lake house: From Dallas, take US 175 as though going to Athens. Take Seven Points Exit (Highway 274) to Seven Points. Go to signal/traffic light (Highway 85) and turn left. The Princess Ball for the youth club will be August 17. This is the young people's big event of the year. Do come and support them. Music will be by the Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six Band.

I would like to let everyone know that we will have the Kaluza Polka from the West area on September 7. This will be the first time at our lodge, so come and have a fun time dancing to their music.

Following closely is our Czech Fest on Sunday, September 8. Dinner will consist of pork roast, dumplings, green beans, sauerkraut, potatoes, coffee, tea and dessert. Members are asked to bring dessert. Several new activities are planned for the day followed with a free dance from 3 to 6 p.m. Music will he furnished by the Al Vanek Band.

We are planning a trip to Bossier City in the next month or two. The trip will be on a Wednesday; however, the date is not definite at this writing. Don't wait to get your name on the list.

Keep reading the Vestnik! Some new events are in the making and we will publish the information in the Vestnik. Also check the calendar.

We do have a date for the Christmas Party—Sunday, December 15. Four o'clock in the afternoon will be the time.

84, Dallas Reports on July Meeting

Dear Members, President Yeager welcomed everyone to the meeting last Monday.

Afterward, Secretary Salac read correspondence from the Brady Center, Louisiana Downs, Sam's Club, and Krogers. Thank-you cards were received from the American Cancer Society for the donation in memory of Sister Dorothy Reznik; from the American Kidney Foundation for the donation in memory of Brother Willie Jakubik; and from the Bethel Lutheran Church in memory of Mary Janosek.

The Sunshine Committee sent a getwell card to Brother Frank Steiner and a congratulations card to Kim and Tommy Pechal who have a new baby girl. The sunshine ladies reminded members to call 348-1514 or 351-3872 and let them be responsible for sending cards to our members that might be needing a card to cheer them or to let them know that we care. The Living Memorial and Special Committee report was given by Sister Salac.

Brother Salac of the House Committee reported Brother John Jones helped him repair the ice machine last Saturday.

Also Brother Salac defrosted the walk-in cooler and cleaned bar equipment. He and Youth Leader Petr invited all to come and see the repair work on the youth closets that Brother E. Petr and Brother Charlie Petr helped remodel.

The hall rental report was presented by Emil Petr. He reported on rentals and afterward we heard kind words being said by members present about him and his many hours of lodge work he contributes each time that he is called on. Thanks, Brother Emil.

Youth Leader Petr reported on the YAD and on the winners that you will read about in the Vestnik. The youth enjoyed a day at Wet and Wild and were preparing for camp.

FAC Faye Rejcek reported on the dues and donations received this month.

President Yeager reported on the Czech Culture Society and the progress being made for a Czech Day at the Texas State Fair.

Dates to remember include September 8, which is our Czech Fest. This will be a dinner everyone will enjoy with roast, kraut, dumplings, green beans, etc., drink Lodge and dessert. Ladies, please donate pastry for this one.

88, Houston Presents July 8 Meeting Minutes

President Clara Broz opened the meeting and Leander Pflughaupt, Louis Rosnovsky and Bob Arnold led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Officers' Reports President Broz announced August will be initiation, and nominations for Fraternalist of the Year will be in September. An executive board meeting on July 30, 1996, is set to discuss Czech Day. First Vice President Marie Stayton thanked the flag bearers and asked the Pop Corn Committee to take next month's flag ceremonies.

Second Vice President Kathy Trefell requested news for publication in the Vestnik. She read a delightful poem.

FAC Homer Alexander thanked all who donated clothes and glasses. The next AARP Defensive Driving Course has been changed to July 18 and 19.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney announced the District Five Royalty as King Justin Miller and Queen Karen Bender, both of Lodge 88. They will compete at State YAD on August 3. Also Lodge 88's scrapbook will represent the district along with a number of other categories. Camp will be July 14 at HEB, located in Leakey, Texas.

Committee Reports Chairman of the Board of Trustees Willie Wehring reported the board approved a new refrigerator, a new freezer and a noise meter. The ribbon cutting ceremonies for the new building have been set for the August meeting.

Blueroom Chairman Dorothy Ptlughaupt reported tickets are on sale for the Blueroom Party on August 18, 1996, for $12.50.

Tom Marsh of the Men's Club thanked all for the month's clean-up. Newspaper is going good and fiesta tickets are welcome. The fiesta dinner is scheduled for September 23.

Gene Barcak of, the Choral Club reported the singers would perform at the Houston Liederkranz on July 13.

Mary Kosut of the Benevolence Committee reported total hours spent doing charity work in June was 563.

District Five Director Louis Hanus reviewed current interest rates and reported plans are underway to carry featured articles in the Vestnik on the museum. A special thanks to Howard and Mary Leshikar for taking time to attend our meeting.

District Youth Counselor Marie Stayton reported camp was coming up on July 14 to July 18 and this year, 83 people

were attending.

We extend get-well wishes to Era Richards.

President Broz then called on Edna Wehring, president of the dance class.

Edna called her assistants Jeanette Bender and Linda Wehring and dance teacher Sharon Joseph. With great pride, these ladies presented the first tap and ballet dance conducted in the SPJST. Three classes of students presented a program exhibiting many months of hard work.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar addressed the members on the great job being done at Lodge 88.

President Leshikar congratulated all who performed on stage and who had the courage to be there.

District Five Director Louis Hanus thanked Edna Wehring for working with the dance class. Thanks to Joni Lange, State Youth Director, for her help.

Edna Wehring and assistants presented each student with a certificate and a trophy to end the session.

Jeanette Bender announced dance class at 6:30 p.m. for ages two to six years; at 7:30 p.m. for ages seven to 11 years; and at 8:30 p.m. for ages 12 to 16 years.

• Linda Wehring congratulated all youth who performed. She announced registration for fall classes will be August 29 with classes starting September 12.

Everyone was invited for cake after the meeting.

Present were 110 members. Happy Birthday wishes went to 26 celebrants and three anniversaries.

Refreshments were donated by Joe Paul Wright.

Door prizes went to Margaret Allbritton, John Lacina, Mark Joseph, Clara Broz, and Clarice Kieth.

139, Danbury Reports on July Meeting

On July 10, Lodge 139, Danbury met in the home of Lorenda and David Baldwin.

During the meeting, Lorenda, Helen Filipp, and Ora Faye Wilson talked about the SPJST Convention held in Arlington last month.

Ace Jeremy Filipp is the 1996 recipient of the Lodge 139 scholarship. He is the son of Joe Filipp of Danbury and Leslie Card of Galveston. Ace graduated from Danbury High School and is presently enrolled at Baylor University where he is studying to be a museum historian. As Ace was unable to attend the meeting, his grandmother, Helen Filipp, accepted the scholarship for him.

This year, our lodge will honor Edward Lubojacky of Alvin, Vincent Hechler, and Lonnie Lostak of Danbury for having been SPJST members for 50 years. They will be presented their 50year membership pins at our August 7 meeting. The meeting will be held at E.J.'s Restaurant at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. We would like to have as many members as possible in attendance to recognize and congratulate these Imembers for their long membership.

Fort Worth Friendship Club Reports on July Meeting

Surprise, Mary!

More than 100 friends and family members gathered recently at Lodge 154, Fort Worth to surprise and honor Sister Mary Renfro, front and center, on the occasion of her 80th birthday. Mary has been the Milan Family matriarch ever since 1977, when Sister Anna Milan passed away. With that title comes responsibility! Every Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas, Mary's lake home becomes the center of attraction for Milan family members from near and far. 180, Burleson to Celebrate Anniversary

With the convention over and the Fourth ofJuly behind us, now it is time to settle down to business. But the hot weather may interfere.

Meeting on August 6 We did not have a meeting in July; but our next meeting will he August 6 at 6:30 p.m. So please join us and express your thoughts. After the meeting, we enjoy fellowship and a good meal. • Anniversary on August 11 On August 11, 1996, we will meet at

the lodge to celebrate the anniversary of the lodge. We will have refreshments and games and a good time to visit. The time is at 2 p.m.

George and Kitty Rippin celebrated their 50th anniversary with their daughter giving them a trip to Porta Plata. George says there was a lot to see. Then, later they enjoyed a visit from Kitty's sister Of San Antonio.

Joe Hurtik and Estell and daughter Elizabeth and family enjoyed a trip to California to visit Joe's brother. They said they had a great trip and enjoyed it very much.

I also hear that Joe, Jr. and Rhonda Hurtik engaged a wonderful trip to the coast with some friends.

We, too, had a wonderful visit with our son, Raymond, and his wife, Joan, and their two girls, Andrea and Joanie. They live in Logan, Utah, and visited two weeks with us. The weather was pretty hot for them, but we still had a good time.

They helped us celebrate our 59th wedding anniversary with lots of lovely cards and a dozen red roses. To finish our good times and visit, our sister-in-law Nell Fern Dueser from Vandalia, Missouri, spent several days with us.

Remember our country/western dances every Saturday night. We have a nice big dance floor and in a nice and cool building.

Jo Prochaska reported her brother-inlaw will have brain surgery.

Lydia Alholm reported on the visit of Roy's cousins and two daughters from Finland. She said it was a great visit.

We have missed Frank Tesar who has been in the hospital. He is now in therapy. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Our guests were Eva Dockey, Frances Matthew, and Bill Sanders.

We all enjoy our guests.

Happy Birthday went out to Rose Steinman, Jeanie Mason, Billye Starr, Carolyn Clevland, and Frank Prochaska.

May you all have many more.

The Taylor Northside Elementary prekindergarten and kindergarten children did a little skit and sang some songs in English and Spanish to delight the residents recently. They went around and wished the residents a happy day. The children are under the direction of Mrs. Vrana, Miss Nieto, Miss Amy, Mrs. Terrazas, Mrs. Gomez, and Mrs. Molina.

The St. Paul Lutheran Sunday School primary children from Taylor came to sing some lovely hymns while Pastor Sandi played the guitar for them. Then the children went around to shake the residents' hands. Others helping with the children were Anna Zigalo and Beverly Kaiser. • Mrs. Kovar wishes to thank all the groups that make life happier for our residents.

Wednesday, July 31, 1996—VESTNIK/7 secretary of the Council since. Mrs. Madie Walker left to go back to her home in Thorndale, Tezas. The favorite menu was planned by Bessie Bureckner. It consisted of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, English peas, hot rolls, and apple pie.

Father's Day The nursing home provided the fathers with a bottle of Mennen aftershave lotion which was presented by Mrs. Kovar.

The kitchen staff prepared a delicious meal of roast and gravy, mashed potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower with cheese, dinner rolls, and for dessert, cheese pie slices and fruit.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Support Group The Support Group met on Wednesday, July 3, 1996, at 6:30 p.m.

The group made plans for fall programs to be presented that would educate the group about their loved ones. The group enjoyed a pot luck supper. Everyone brought a delicious dish and got acquainted with the group.

County Czech Heritage Museum Sets Bake Sale this Saturday Burleson

The Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum will have a bake sale on Saturday, August 3, 1996, at Walmart in Caldwell. The bake sale begins at 9 a.m. with wonderful homemade bread, cookies, cakes, pies, and noodles.

Plan to come early for all your baking needs—why heat up your kitchen! This bake sale will only last until 12 noon.

If you would like to bake something special, please call JoAnn Worthington at 567-3627 or if you want to make a donation to the Czech Museum, please do it on August 3 because Walmart will match your gifts.

As you well know, the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum is working to restore our Historic Site at Fawn and Shaw Street, as well as preparing to work in partnership with the City of Caldwell in obtaining the multi-million dollar Czech Center planned by Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA).

Of course, the party of the year, Kolache Festival, is September 14. The Czech Museum will have four locations during Kolache Festival. Call George Hlavinka at 535-4895 if you and your group want to work. We need a group to loan the Czech Museum ten folding tables and about 50 chairs. Bring them to the Historic Site, set up and take down on Saturday evening. It's a party—Stay Czech cool and comfortable.

The tournament will be held at the West Community Center in West, Texas, on Saturday, August 31, 1996. The tournament is open to all interested tarock players, ladies and gentlemen, 18 years of age or older.

Entry fee will he $15 per person with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and play starting at 9:30 a.m. Play should conclude about 5:30 p.m. Kolaches and coffee will be served during registration.

Lunch is included in the registration fee and will he served at the community center. Trophies and cash prizes will he awarded to the top four players. Play will continue for all players throughout the tournament. The top four players after five rounds will be awarded first, second, third and fourth place honors.

n Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge 154, Fort Worth, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our most sincere and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, MARY KRUPKA BOTIK, who died Saturday, July 13, 1996, in a nursing home at the age of 94 years. She was born March 22, 1902, in Kunovica, Czechoslovakia, and had been a resident of Fort Worth since 1912.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Marion Joseph Krupka and Joe Botik, and one son, Jerry Krupka.

Survivors are her stepsons, Msgr.

William Botik of Dallas and Joe Botik of Lubbock; two daughters, Ellen Simpson of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Mary Schneider of Fort Worth; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church or the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Pallbearers were Mark Schneider, Ross Hyde, Guy Walston, Leslie Simpson, Wallace Schneider, and Mike Schneider.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 15, 1996. Rosary was at 1:15 p.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m.

Burial was by the Greenwood Funeral Home at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

He was also a member of the SPJST Lodge 54, RVOS Lodge 45, and the Mutual Aide Society. He enjoyed gardening, and watching football and boxing. He especially loved his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Marek of Abbott; his mother, Hermina Marek of Abbott; one son and daughterin-law, Dale and Judy Marek of Abbott; two daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Kenneth Scheler and Debbie and •Terry Crawford, all of Abbott; two sisters, Martha Taylor of Bynum and Pauline West of Waco; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Miles, Texas, with burial in.the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Rowena.

Fred was born to Gehard and Rosa Klaus Schmiedekamp in Rosebud, Texas.

He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and a member of SPJST Lodge 49 in Rowena. He was enjoying his retirement after 30 years of service with Ballinger Butane Company.

Survivors include his wife, Wallie of Miles; two daughters, Marcella Davis of Temple and Roslyn Borummitt of Huntsville; three sons, Larry of San Angelo, Elvis of Chicago, and Myron of Grape Creek; two stepdaughters, Francine and Barbara; three sisters, 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A prayer service was at 7 p.m. July 16 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral serices were at 10 a.m. July 17 at West Brethren Church with the Rev. Don Ketcham officiating. Burial followed at West Brethren Cemetery.

Mr. Kral was born July 26, 1907, in McLennan County, the son of Anton and Mary Kral. He married Albina Marek on August 29, 1929, in Hill County. She preceded him in death on August 30, 1984. He was a farmer for most of his life. He also worked for Sulak's Cotton Gin, West Flour Mill for many years,

Boone Industries in Waco, and the City of West for ten years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 54 and RVOS Lodge 45, both in West. He was also a member of the West Brethren Church.

He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Albina and Benedict Matusek and Christine and Elmer Bishop, all of West; one sister, Vlasta Matus of West; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Alan Bishop, Jeffery Martin, Shane Matusek, Ronny Reed, Robert Kral, and Ray Sexton.

Memorials may be made to the West Volunteer Ambulance Associaton or to the West Brethren Church.

Reunions Descendants of John and Frances Dusek Shenkir Reunion Our annual Shenkir Family Reunion will be Sunday, August 11, 1996, at the Salado Civic Center in Salado, Texas.

Salado is about 16 miles south of Temple on Highway 35, Salado has some good craft stores, antique and home decorating stores to browse thought. The Civic Center was formerly the Old Red School House on Main Street in Salado. The room we have rented is on the second floor. There is an elevator to facilitate easy access. The room is large, air-conditioned and very pleasant with a nice kitchen equipped with a stove, oven and microwave.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m.

Lunch will begin at 12 noon. Tea, coffee, bread and eating utensils will be provided. If everyone will please bring enough food for their family, then we will all share together a covered lunch. After lunch, we will have a family meeting and give away lots of door prizes. Please bring a white elephant gift to make the drawing more enjoyable. . We hope you will make your plans now to join us as we celebrate the lives of John and Frances Shenkir. Please invite and encourage all members of your family to attend. Youth Letters Section District Six Youth Counselor Presents YAD Results Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 97, Placedo hosted the District Six Youth Achievement Day on Sunday, July 7 at the Victoria Community Center.

Members of Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 28, East Bernard; Lodge 30, Talton; Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje; and Lodge 97, Placedo all participated in point merit, royalty, talent, craft, scrapbook, and poster competitions. The event was held under the direction of District Six Youth Counselor Marcy Dorotik and Assistant District Six Youth Counselor Karen Kaspar.

The program began at 1 p.m. Yvonne Garrett, President of Placedo adult Lodge 97, welcomed everyone. We then had the presentation of colors by Lodge 4, Hallettsville youth club members Elizabeth Wagner and James Svetlik.

Sharon Borak of Lodge 40, El CampoHillje was the Mistress of Ceremohies for the day's talent and royalty competitions.

The tabulation committee for the District Six YAD consisted of Vicki Schnider of Lodge 30, Taiton; Charlene Borak of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje; Kathy Garrett of Lodge 97, Placedo; Helen Zabransky of Lodge 4, Hallettsville; and District Six Director Matt Vanek as overseer. I would like to thank all the tabulators for their time and hard work. They have a tough job and we really appreciated their help at YAD. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make our YAD possible and successful! Thank you to all the workers, judges, tabulators, and our emcee. I also want to thank our District Director Matt Vanek, our State Youth Director Joni Lange, and our President Howard Leshikar for attending District Six YAD. We really appreciate all the support you give to us in District Six. Thanks to all the members of Placedo for hosting District Six YAD. You all did a great job and a special thanks to those who supervised the kitchen.

And thank you to my assistant, Karen Kaspar, who continually goes the distance to help make sure everything runs smoothly!

Dear Readers, Lodge 9 youth club had their July meeting on July 3 at the Snook SPJST Hall. My stepbrother and sister, Joseph and Katy Vajdek of McAllen, Texas, were visiting and they came to our monthly meeting.

The Yezaks were in charge of the crafts. We made red, white and blue wind socks.

Our speaker was Mrs. Jackie Rucker who is an EMT for Burleson County and she talked about first aide.

Darren, Sarah, and Ryan Yezak told some jokes.

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Snook Youth Club had their monthly meeting on Wednesday, July 3.

We had a really big turn-out. I brought two guests from Wisconsin 4-H Exchange to our meeting.

Our charities and community service

Wednesday, July 31, 1996—VESTNIK/11 projects were recycling newspapers and recycling plastic soda bottles for Lutheran Church, writing letters to soldiers in Bosnia, bringing cookies to area Bible Schools and cleaning and watering flowers at the city marker in Snook.

We discussed camp and YAD. We also scheduled a swimming party for July 12.

Thanks to Granny Ruth Kovar for treating us to watermelon.

That was a great way to cool off!

Dear Readers, Our July 3 meeting was well-attended.

We had five visitors.

After our meeting, Mrs. Jackie Rucker talked about safety. Then, we made red, white and blue wind socks. Granny Ruth Kovar brought us watermelon. It was good. Then, we practiced for YAD. After that, we celebrated the Fourth of July by having fireworks.

On July 12, we had YAD practice and then went swimming at Adamson Lagoon. We had fun!

At YAD, our group talent got first place and I got first place in science/education with my lung project.

Before we went to camp, we stopped at the SPJST Museum. It was interesting.

Then, at camp, I had a great time but it was hot.

Our monthly meeting was on July 3.

We had a lot to talk about. Then, we made wind socks, had YAD practice, ate watermelon, and had fireworks. We all had sparklers and spinners. Then, I lit roman candles. It was fun.

Dear Readers, District One youth returned from Camp Val Verde on Thursday, July 18.

The kids that went had a great time even though it was really hot. We swam, canoed, shot bow and arrows, tie-dyed tshirts, made red, white and blue picture

frames, hunted for fossils and arrowheads, went on hikes, made homemade ice creams, played basketball, had a karaoke party, and also had olympic games. I think everybody came home with a certificate. We were too busy to sit around and think about the heat.

Thanks to Mrs. Susan for organizing all the activities and to the cooks for cooking our good food, and also to Mrs. Ann who bandaged my banged-up knee.

Also thanks to Mindy and Vince for being great LITs. We had our July meeting on July 21 and we decided that Lodge 13 would take a trip to Astroworld on July 31. We also elected new officers for this year. Thanks to Ms. Milburn for providing cookies and candy for our meeting.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Member Reports on Camp Dear Readers, I just got home from SPJST camp.

Camp is the hottest place in the world but it is not as hot as the sun. We went to the river but there was not much water. It was all dried up. I rode a horse—it was the funest thing. My horse's name was Sundance. We did Olympic games and I got two awards—one for basketball and one for jump rope.

We had YAD before we went to camp.

I won first place on my individual talent and two of my crafts. I also got second place in group talent and one craft. I did a bug collection, a tractor and a birdhouse. I also was a duke. My king, Vince Morehead, won. We are going to state.

I am going on vacation with my mommy and daddy. We are going to the Alamo. Davy Crockett died at the Alamo and Russell, Davy's friend.

Each of the members made Father's Day cards and cookies and they were taken to the retirement home to all of the fathers as a tribute to Father's Day: The meeting was adjourned and members enjoyed refreshments of snowcones provided by T.J. Brandon and Steven Drapela.

177, Academy Youth Club Reports on July Meeting

The July meeting of Lodge 177 Youth Club was called to order by Brooke Bartlett at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 7.

Tiffany Wolf led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. There were 17 members and six adults present.

The officers gave their reports and the minutes were approved as read. Youth Leader Karen Bartek reported on the Belton Fourth of July Parade. Our social for July was a lake outing that followed the parade. Everyone had a great time boating, tubing, kneeboarding, swimming and going on the water slides.

The August social will be the District Two trip to Astroworld. Please call Karen Bartek or Janet Lyon before August 1 if you plan on going. The trip is scheduled for August 10 by chartered bus. Watch the Vestnik for further details.

Lodge 130, Dallas Member Joshua Hlavenka Named Eagle Scout The highest rank in Boy Scouts, that of Eagle Scout, was earned by Joshua Hlavenka, age 15, of SPJST Lodge 130.

Joshua is a member of Troop 188 in Joshua Hlavenka Irving.

In order to earn the Eagle Scout Award, the candidate must earn 22 merit badges, perform a community service project and go before a review board.

Joshua is currently the youth club president of the lodge and is a member of the lodge's dance group, The Texas Czech Beseda Dancers. He has performed with the dance group at nursing homes and the Buckner's Children Home and various international festivals. Joshua is a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Terrell and is an altar server. For his service project, Joshua organized a crew of volunteers to work and clean Kitt Cemetery in Irving, Texas.

The Court of Honor was June 2 with over 70 in attendance. President Keith Shinn and Vice President Ken Vrla, both of Lodge 130, gave the Eagle charge to Joshua. Both Keith and Ken are Eagle Scouts themselves.

--SPJSTSamantha Guerra is celebrating her birthday this month. The meeting was adjourned at 2:31 p.m. Youth members enjoyed having sandwiches for refreshments, served by the youth club. Intermediate Conversational Czech will be offered by the Continuing Education Department of Alvin Community College on Tuesday nights from 7 to 9 pm. from September 17 to November 19. The class will meet at Pearland High School at 3775 South Main in Pearland.

Students of Czech descent as well as any interested persons are welcome to register for this non-credit course.

Conversational Czech has been taught at ACC since 1973. Czech language instruction fosters awareness and understanding of cultural pluralism in Texas.

To further this understanding, the class will learn Czech geography, culture, arts and food. The history and contributions of Czechs in Texas will also be presented.

The instructor for Conversational Czech will be Bernard Pivonka, who has a degree in history and Czech from the University of Texas in Austin.

There is no tuition for this course. It is funded by the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST). Registration is in the Continuing Education office at Alvin Community College or may be accomplished by telephone at (713) 3884684. Registration will also be available the first night of class.

Fall Czech Classes at Austin Community College The following Czech classes will be offered this fall: Conversation Czech I CSC-2-322-040 is being offered for the student with little or no background in the Czech language.

Emphasis is on vocabulary, pronunciation, and beginning conversation. No prerequisite is required. Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Reagan High School. Class begins September 3 and continues for seven weeks for 21 hours.

Conversation Czech H CSC-3-763-040 is a continuation of Czech I designed for students who have some knowledge of Czech or completed Czech I. Emphasis is on improving vocabulary, basic sentence structure, and speaking skills. Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Class begins in October .

NEWS AND NOTES A Little Something Extra Retirees in the Czech Republic can expect a little something extra in their monthly government checks. The government recently decided to increase oldage pensions by 8 percent. As a result, average monthly pensions will increase to just over four-and-a half thousand crowns — or around $150 U.S. dollars.

Housing Construction Up in Czech Republic

Czech construction industry recently issued a report predicting a dramatic increase in housing construction in the Czech Republic by the end of the century.

It predicted that the number of apartments built will increase from an estimated 16,000 units to 55,000 annually.

The report also projects that construction costs will increase by 12 to 13 percent annually, and that the average cost of new apartments in the Czech Republic will double, to approximately $60,000 U.S. dollars.
