Arlington Convention Center Arlington, Texas began in 1876 as a midpoint stop between Dallas and Fort Worth on the Texas & Pacific Railroad's route west. By the 1890s, this tiny settlement had its own college, one bank, and its first automobile. It was just a few years later that the Interurban, an electric trolley system linking Dallas, Fort Worth, and several small towns, turned the area into a busy cotton and grain market center. The 1950's made Arlington famous due to a huge population boom - the country's biggest percentage increase in population and new construction ever. The city grew between 1950 and 1960 from 7,692 to 44,775. That was just the start, as Six Flags Over Texas opened in 1961 and Arlington Stadium, home of the Texas Rangers baseball team, opened in 1965. Another population boom in the '70s spurred more rapid growth as northern businesses and families relocated to the Sunbelt. With a population of 284,000, Arlington will be the center of attention for the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas from June 9 - 12, as the city hosts the SPJST's 27th Quadrennial Convention. Approximately 300 delegates, accompanied by spouses and other family members will be in town, helping to lay the groundwork for our Society's second century of progress.
